In short
Nightcap Hour 1 hosts Shannon Sharpe, Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, and Joe “Iso” Johnson react to early college football results, focusing on Alabama’s blowout, Auburn’s narrow win over Baylor, Oregon’s comeback vs Boise State, Ohio State’s opener, Texas vs Ohio State preview, and Michigan’s late Hail Mary survival.
Guests (hosts)
Shannon Sharpe (former NFL receiver; Bengals all-time leading receiver; six-time Pro Bowler, All-Pro). Chad Ochocinco Johnson (former NFL wide receiver; from Liberty City, Dade County; Bengals legend). Joe Johnson “Iso” (former NBA player; seven-time NBA All-Star, All-NBA; University of Arkansas).
Key claims
Alabama’s standard is national championships; Keelan Russell flashed but must avoid taking hits and improve concentration/ball security. Auburn’s win was “lucky” given poor execution by both teams; Baylor coach Dave Aranda is on the hot seat. Oregon’s offense was strong, but penalties (10 for 80) nearly derailed them; QB Deontay Moore’s play mattered most. Texas-Ohio State is a heavyweight matchup; Arch Manning must win it with his arm. Michigan’s offense is often anemic; Bryce Underwood needs to “grow into” expectations.
Notable examples
Alabama 48-10 East Carolina (Russell 18/30, 256 passing + 86 rushing; Ryan Williams drops). Auburn 17-16 Baylor (Eric Winters stop; Byron Brown 3 INTs; missed field goal). Oregon vs Boise State (down 17-7; Moore comeback; 27-27 pivotal catch). Michigan vs Western Michigan (47-yard Hail Mary with 1 second left).

What are we going to get into first, guys? Alabama rolled 48-10 over East Carolina. The spotlight was on Keelan Russell making his first career start. The redshirt freshman, five-star prospect, a 2025 class. He was sensational. 18 of 30, 256, and another 86 yards. He was the leading rusher for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
8:52Shannon Sharpe:He invited too many hits, though. That's what I think. He can't be taking those hits like that. He's a quarterback. He's not a running back. He's a quarterback that can run the football. He's not a running back playing quarterback. But he flashed tremendous brilliance and excellence. He had the second most total yards in a game. Started by his first start. Only Bryce Young had more 343 to 335. But I thought he was sensational today, Ocho.
9:17Joe Johnson:He was good today. My focal point in this game was Ryan Williams. I wanted to make sure his confidence was back. He was making the plays that we got used to seeing him make as we first got there. Obviously. He had a case of the drops Yes But he still made some very explosive plays today and they're going to need those plays throughout this season because I think Alabama If I'm not mistaken, I think they finished what? 10-4 last year? Yep. Something like that and that's not the standard. There's never been a standard when it came to Alabama football So they're gonna need Mr. Russell to play well and Ryan Williams has to lead that offense
9:49Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, he played well. He did that. That's what he needed to do make sure you're holding to the football. He's made it known that Ocho, he's going to play in Joe, he's going to play the entire season without gloves. Maybe that's a mental thing because a lot of times when you start changing things up, it's mental now. Now you're trying to find out ways, why am I dropping the football? I think more than anything, it's just a lack of concentration. You just have to focus on the ball. Don't worry so much about yards after the catch. Don't worry about touchdowns. Just focus on catching the football and then all that other stuff will take care of itself.
10:17Shannon Sharpe:I agree. I think the five for 130 yards was great, but he dropped a couple on the shoulder, which he probably could have had about 200-something yards. But I thought Keelan Russell looked great. You know, his mobility outside the pocket, running, passing the ball, making everything easy for guys. So I think Alabama's run game is probably the biggest key. You know, they had five rushing touchdowns by four different players. You know what I mean? So they let you know, man, they ground and pound and them big boys up front opening up them holes. The standard for Alabama is national championships. It's not good enough to win the SEC.
10:51Shannon Sharpe:It's not good enough. Yeah, I understand you want to beat Auburn. That's your crosstown rival. I get all of that. I get the, you know, 10 wins. For a lot of teams, 10 wins is great. But not when you're Alabama when the standard is the standard. When you follow Coach Nick Saban, six national championships, they played for another three, the standard is national championships. Playing for national championships. And I thank Kalen DeBoer. And I hate saying this every year, but that's a pressure cooker down there. That's a pressure cooker. You follow the greatest coach in college football history.
11:20Shannon Sharpe:That's what you follow. You wanted to be the guy that followed the guy that followed that guy. You didn't want to be that guy that followed him. Yeah, yeah, man. Because that's what everybody remembers. Everybody's going to remember Coach Saban and those great teams that he trotted out there. But this is a different era now. I think we're going to have to, like, the expectations are going to have to be different for a while than looking at Alabama because they're not the same Alabama. Everybody has NIL money. Everybody has players that are transferred, leaving the portal, coming into the portal.
11:46Shannon Sharpe:So Alabama, the standard in which they played for for the last 20 years, I think we're going to have to reassess how we look at Alabama.
11:55Joe Johnson:Yeah, most definitely.
12:00Shannon Sharpe:Eric Winters to Auburn. That was an unbelievable game. Eric Winters prevented a two-point conversion. Auburn stole a dramatic 17-16 victory over Baylor. Both offenses struggled. Auburn, Byron Brown tossed three interceptions. Not good. while DJ Langway threw a pick and lost a fumble. Neither side was effective rushing the football. And both units had a turnover on downs plus the missed field goal. But Baylor head coach Dave Aranda is sitting on the hot seat. He's definitely sitting on the hot seat. When you look at Auburn, I mean, they won this ball game. I don't think either. This was bad football.
12:38Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. And I hate saying this because these are kids. Yeah. But you practice all week and you did all this work that you put into it and y 'all come out there and y 'all play like that. That's not good enough. That's good enough to get you beat on most Saturdays. And for Auburn to survive what they did today, they won't win very many games they play that bad. What do you think about it, Jim? I thought Auburn played clean football. You know, sometimes that first game, okay, Ocho, you know, it tells you a lot about your toughness of your team and what you got and who will step up in these big moments.
13:11Shannon Sharpe:You know, it's early in the season. game one. So guys, these top teams, upper echelon teams, they got to kind of knock the dust off a little bit. You know what I mean? So first couple weeks, I think guys, teams going to be finding their rhythm, then they'll get in ref for them. But Auburn found no way to pull one out, bro.
13:27Joe Johnson:I mean, they got lucky, huh? They got lucky. Obviously, that last play. Quarterback.
13:32Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
13:33Joe Johnson:If you put that out in front of them and leads them, Auburn loses his game. Obviously, playing against, especially week one, it is kind of iffy. We have two teams that have quality players on both sides of the ball. to come down to the biggest plays in those moments. And whoever makes the least mistakes normally wins games that are close like this.
13:49Shannon Sharpe:And this was a neutral side game. This was an Aflac game played in the Mercedes-Benz Dome, so this was not a home game for either team. I think the thing is, like you said, DJ Langway, he left the University of Florida because he just felt like, for whatever reason, it wasn't going his way. But there are plays that he's going to have to make. He's too veteran of a quarterback to miss some of the throws that he was missing. Like you said, Ocho, he puts that ball in front to give the guy a chance to turn and go into the end zone. He threw it behind him. He had no momentum. And when you got no momentum, the guy hits you, and that's where you get tackled at.
14:23Shannon Sharpe:So, look, it's a very disappointing way to lose the ball game. You know, I'm having me. Got me a little side card going right here. See how this thing going. And the positive is when Auburn really needed it late in the drive, they were able to come up with the big plays. And that's what you look for in your sharp players.
14:45Shannon Sharpe:For those who believe Oregon is a prime championship threat, they weren't convincing in their opener. A Dan Latting squad fell behind 17-7, needed a couple of late defensive stops to outlast Boise State. But when they had to have it, they quarterbacked Deontay Moore. Man, he was sensational today. He was wheeling and dealing. But that is the difference. It doesn't matter the level. When you got that guy that touches the ball on every single play, you have a chance in every game. It didn't matter that they fell behind at home 17-7. The mere fact that they had him, they were over to come, that slow start that they had.
15:19Joe Johnson:And once he got it going, ooh, he was dealing. Yeah, and that's a good thing. That's what I really enjoy about college football, Uncle Joe. No matter how good you are, sometimes teams that are not as good as you can surprise you right away. They can jump on top of you right away because you can practice as much as you want, but once you get out there in week one, you'll never know how your team's going to operate on that adversity. And so they face adversity, and that's just a testament to coaching and the players that they have at Oregon to be able to come back down 17-7 because most times, what do coaches do?
15:47Joe Johnson:They panic. What do players do? They panic. They press and they make mistakes. So they're able to come back and all due to their quarterback play.
15:55Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. I think the biggest thing for Oregon, when I look at Oregon, I thought they played offensively. You can't play much better than what they play as far as once they got the ball in play. Their problem was penalties. Ten penalties for 80 yards. You play in the upper echelon team. You play in Texas. You play in Ohio State. You play in some of these top contending teams. I don't know if that's good enough to overcome those mistakes like that. You play in Boise State. You're better than Boise State, even though Boise State got off to that great start on you. But you commit penalties. Set yourself behind.
16:26Shannon Sharpe:Play behind the sticks because everybody wants to play in front of the sticks. You want to have it manageable down and distance. You want to be in a situation where you're second and three, you're third and one to three, something like that. But when you start pre-snap penalties and committing those silly fouls, that'll come back to bite you. Yeah, probably the biggest, the pivotal play of the game was 27-27 and the receiver Moore caught that reception, which brought it home. We know Oregon got talent, bro. Yes. We know they got talent. They always going to have talent. And the fact that college football is a lot different now than what it used to be as far as we're talking about a professional sport.
17:01Shannon Sharpe:Those guys are going to always have the cream of the crop. Like I said, it's still early. First game, ain't really have too many challenges. Right. But, you know, I always think Oregon is going to be there at the end, bro. They're going to be one of the top teams in the playoff. Ohio State, obviously, Ohio State is loaded. We're going to talk about them a little bit later with Jeremiah Smith and Chris Henry Jr. Indiana, Indiana played really well today. They're trying to show everyone that the last two years wasn't a fluke. Kirk Signetti is one of the best coaches in football right now, and he has those guys dealing.
17:32Shannon Sharpe:He doesn't take a whole lot of bull jive. He's on a schedule. He's very detail-oriented, and most of the great coaches are. They're very detail-oriented. They don't bull jive around. When we hit the field, we're there to get a job done. But I thought Oregon, all in all, minus the penalties, but that's a part of the game. Like you guys said earlier, it's the first game of the season. It's nice to have the first game of the season and we get a win. I like coaching off a win as opposed to coaching off a loss. Now, I do learn more from a loss, and I can get the guys' attention, but I think the thing is when you're Oregon, you have championship aspirations.
18:06Shannon Sharpe:This would have been a death blow for them. To lose this early in the game, to lose to Boise State, and you still got the gauntlet, you still got Ohio State on the schedule coming down the pipeline. Yeah, you could ill afford to lose this ballgame, but I thought they played well overall other than the fact that they had 10 penalties for 80 yards. 10 penalties for 80 yards normally get you beat, but they were able to pull this game out. Give Boise State credit. Boise State jumped on them. Boise State came out there ready to play. We know the old Boise State, they used to have those big guys really, really concerned about them, especially in the bowl game because you didn't see that style of offense.
18:41Shannon Sharpe:And they would try anything. It didn't matter. Fake putt, onside kick. They had to gadget play with the Statue of Liberty. Remember they beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl? Yeah, with the Statue of Liberty playing the Fiesta Bowl. And when you're playing a team that you're supposed to beat and they're under man, anything goes. They'll try anything at any point in time in the field because they throw caution to the wind because they don't have anything to lose. And when someone doesn't have anything to lose, it's tough playing a team like that. And when you think about it, you know, we know it's early in the season, but you don't get no damn tune-up games, bro.
19:16Shannon Sharpe:You don't get none of that. So you don't get a chance to really, you know, see if you got transfers, all these transfers that you got and try to build up that chemistry and that cohesion that a team needs to be great, it takes time over the season. So the start is always the roughest, if you ask me. I think if you're a team that's supposedly not so great and you go on there playing against a top team in college football, you got a great chance of beating them. Everybody got no tune-up games, bro. That's the thing about college football. I like the NFL. You have a preseason. You have joint practices and things like that.

19:45Shannon Sharpe:You have ways to try to get yourself to gauge to see exactly where you are. That's what preseason is for, is for NFL teams to gauge where they are, to see what type of players they have, what we need. Are we going to be good here? Maybe we need to go out there and get a player to add some depth here. But in college, you don't get that luxury. You hit the field running. Basically, you get spring, and then the guys are off, and then they come back, and the next thing you know, we're playing real meaningful football.
20:12Joe Johnson:The only meaningful football that they do have, especially Oregon, is just to say the adversity that they have. When you're teeing off and your clients are watching, it's on. 23:46Shannon Sharpe:Ohio State.
23:47Joe Johnson:Oh, yeah.
23:48Shannon Sharpe:You play Texas. You play Georgia. You play Indiana. You play Miami. You play some of those top ten teams and you mess around and play those because those are the teams you're going to expect to play if you make the college football playoff. Right. Those are the teams that you're going to be looking to face. So you can't, and hopefully they're able to clean it up, make the game a lot cleaner down the road than what they did today. But let's see how this thing plays out for Oregon. The uniforms down should look good. They be sharp over there on demand. They do. Hey, you got all type of alternates, different colors.
24:19Shannon Sharpe:They got so many uniforms. They do. Hey, I got a question for y 'all. Yeah. So the fact that college football is a professional sport, now do y 'all think they will add two preseason, two games that don't go under their belts? No. Because, man, think about it. The kids now, Joe, when you add it up, you look at the game, these kids play in 15, 16 games. They play in an NFL season. Yeah. Yeah. With the playoffs. Yes. Yeah, with the playoffs. because, you know, you got – and they're looking to add, you know, maybe another four teams. They already got – I think, what, they got eight teams now? Yeah.
24:51Shannon Sharpe:I think they got eight teams now. You add four more teams, make it a 12-team series. Man, they might be at 12 already, though. For the college football playoff? Yeah, for the football playoff because I think they got four buys. Somebody look that up right quick. Look that up right quick and see if – but I think college football, no, They play enough games as it is. Because even before that, teams were going 15-0. So now, with no multiple, multiple rounds, because Indiana had to win three rounds. Normally you win, yeah. What did they say? They had it? How many college football playoff teams already?
25:31Joe Johnson:Twelve.
25:31Shannon Sharpe:Twelve, yes. So, yeah.
25:33Joe Johnson:And they're looking to add four more. No, well, I like, you know what I like?
25:39Shannon Sharpe:I like the NFL playoffs. because I think you should have to play your way into the playoffs as opposed to being put in the playoffs because sometimes teams under 500 and you're making the playoffs. And I understand that happens sometimes when you win your division in the NFL. But as a college football, because we ain't got – it's like these teams going 6-6 and going to a bowl game because we ain't got – come on now. Right. You 500, you ain't got no business in no bowl games. Stay your ass home. Turn it down like Notre Dame did last year when they didn't make the college football playoffs. Right.
26:07Shannon Sharpe:Nah, we ain't going. Right. We got to – F y 'all. Forget y 'all. Y 'all want to leave us home? We're not going to take our big contingent on the road and grace y 'all with our presence. But I thought Oregon played well. Other than the penalties, I thought Oregon played really, really well. Ryan Day gave his top-ranked Buckeyes just 15 minutes to celebrate their 56-3 season opening win. The minute we left the locker room is on to Texas. Both teams roll today. There'll be times we enjoy this win throughout the night. Not this one. They called Ohio State trip to top five Texas next week. A monster game, adding this program entire offseason and preseason, was designed around winning that big matchup on the road, beginning with the chance to defeat the Longhorns for the third consecutive year.
26:53Shannon Sharpe:That's a monster matchup.
26:55Joe Johnson:Ball stick. It's expected. Yes. Let's get the cobwebs out. When we do operate offensively, can we play the game without making any mistakes? any completion percentage, defense, being solid, not messing up any assignments. You're supposed to win a game like this by this magnitude. Yes. This was a tune-up, just like boxing. It's a tune-up with a lesser opponent for the big dance next week against Ohio State.
27:21Shannon Sharpe:That's going to be prime time. No, against Texas. I mean Texas. I'm sorry. You're against Texas. Yeah, that's going to be prime. Ohio State got a bunch of different weapons, bro. They got a bunch of different weapons. I'm looking forward to the matchup. I'm looking forward to the matchup. I'm looking forward to it also because this is what it's about. And, you know, you don't normally see big teams like this play each other this early. Normally you might get it down the line or you get it in a bowl game. But to get Texas ranked where they are, to get Ohio State ranked where they are in the second game of the season, this is the matchup that we're going to get.
27:54Shannon Sharpe:Two outstanding quarterbacks, the receivers. You know, Texas, the guy jumped in the portal from Auburn Coleman. He was sensational. He's fabulous. had two touchdowns today. I think Wilson is the other receiver, and we know about the outstanding Jeremiah Smith from Ohio State and Chris Henry Jr., your former teammate. Man, I know his dad looking down on him. He was so proud. He's like, boy, I see you, boy. I see you doing your thing. You mind your pop doing what he did. But Jeremiah Smith is something special. Speak up so the microphone can pick you up because you're tripping on his own. Okay. Yeah, but no, this is the matchup.
28:30Shannon Sharpe:I mean, I can't remember a time that we've had two highly touted teams that we expect to be there in the end playing so early. And I don't think a loss will hurt either team for the simple fact that we're scheduling. Teams that used to schedule like this. Teams that used to schedule somebody that could potentially beat you on your – So early? Yeah, yeah. Normally you get three or four of them easy games before you get in the conference play. Right. Yeah.
28:56Joe Johnson:But I think Alabama – I mean, Alabama. I think Ohio State knows. I think Texas knows even with the loss, somebody got to lose. Yes. Even with the loss, they're still going to have a chance for one to make the playoffs. Because the team, the name.
29:09Shannon Sharpe:Yes.
29:09Joe Johnson:At the end of the day, when it comes to the playoffs, it's still business.
29:13Shannon Sharpe:Right.
29:13Joe Johnson:And the bottom line is still money. Yeah. So they know they have a chance. And it's a good test, not for just both coaches, but for both teams as well to see where you are early in the season.
29:23Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. I like to see these top teams get played early against each other. I think when you look at it from a fans perspective, we want to see the top guys, the Mannings, the Smiths. We want to see these guys who make a top NIL money. We want to see them play against each other. You know what I mean? So I think this is going to be a great week to match up. It's going to be explosive. I mean, the weapons that Ohio State has, bro, I don't know how you stop that. Yeah. I don't. You got to pressure the quarterback. Anytime you got outstanding receivers, you got to pressure the quarterback. You remember that great offense that the Patriots have.
29:57Shannon Sharpe:What did the Giants do? Get after the quarterback. Peyton Manning, when he had that great offense, what did Seattle do? Get after the quarterback. You've got to attack the quarterback because you let him stand upright, he's going to pick you apart because his weapons are so good. So I think that's going to be the approach of Texas. Texas feel like they have an outstanding defense. And I think Texas had the same approach that Ohio State. You hear Ryan Day said everything that we did offseason, everything we did in the preseason was to go on the road and beat Texas. I believe Sark is saying the same thing.
30:27Shannon Sharpe:Everything that we've done in the offseason, everything that we've done in the preseason, was to take down Ohio State, who we've lost to the last two seasons. And so it's going to be a heavyweight fight. This is what it's all about. And to have this type of matchup on the schedule so early in the season, man, I tip my hat. I tip the hat to both athletic directors that allow this to happen because a lot of times we don't see matchups like this this early.
30:52Joe Johnson:And I think for Texas, if Texas is to win this game, Archimedes are going to have to be the one to win it. You're going to have to win it on his arm. You're going to have to win it on his arm, and he's going to have to be consistent and not make some of the mistakes that he made when he watched in previous seasons. I mean, especially last season. Yeah. You've got to play well in this game.
31:09Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. This is the game that his uncles would play. This is how they made their name. You know, Eli, you know, in the big moments, played really, really well. He took down Tom Brady twice. He beat Aaron Rodgers to get to the Super Bowl. We've seen him do things like this. Peyton, we've seen Peyton have to go toe-to-toe with Tom Brady and have to beat him numerous occasions in order to get to the Super Bowl. The Manning name, just that name alone is football hierarchy because his grandfather was the number two pick in the draft. Both of his uncles were number one overall picks in the draft. And so to follow that, and you got that Manning name on the back of your jersey, everybody just expect you to be great.
31:58Shannon Sharpe:That's a lot of pressure in and of itself. Forget talking about, oh, it ain't a, nah, nah, bro. You can't be average when you got Manning on the back of your jersey. You just can't do it.
32:13Shannon Sharpe:Big shoes to feel. Yes. I couldn't even imagine. Could you imagine coming from a family like that and you playing that same sport, quarterback, same position? Your grandfather was the number two pick in the draft.
32:24Joe Johnson:You know what? I wouldn't see myself playing quarterback, but if I had a lineage of receivers and I was young and coming up behind them, now that I would love. I would love that. But obviously the pressure that comes with being a quarterback and having to follow in the footsteps of two greats, you know, all the famers at some point, Eli, kind of getting at some point, that'd be crazy.
32:44Shannon Sharpe:But you know what I think? People don't understand. I think it's harder to do what he's doing because look at the family and what they got. We came from an impoverished situation. That was our way out. He already had a way out. There you go. We had to make a way out of no way. He got a way. He was paid for it. People don't understand. And that's why, and I said this, I always take my hat off to people that, well, they got the proper training. They got the proper this and the proper that. but we've seen so many of those type of kids go awry. They go astray. So for them to be able to do what they do and to meet that expectation, man, it's unbelievable.
33:23Shannon Sharpe:Now, I definitely don't want to be Peyton Manning, son. Oh, man. I definitely don't want to be Peyton Manning. Hey, look, I was saying the same thing. These professional guys with kids, their offsprings play the same sport, and they're successful. LeBron James Jr. Man, that's tough, bro. You know, think about it. Like, your dad was, he was him at the end. You hear me? and you follow that up and you got to, and you trying to some way somehow find a way to find your niche in the game. Make your own day. That's tough, bro.
33:52Joe Johnson:That's really hard, especially when, like, I think about LeBron's son. I think about, you know, Manning, you know, at Texas.
33:57Shannon Sharpe:Jerry Rice's son played receiver. Yeah.
33:59Joe Johnson:That too. Yeah, he did. How do you create your own identity? But once you submerge yourself in the same sport, in the same respect of craft, you can't hide it.
34:08Shannon Sharpe:No, no, you can't hide it. Especially if you carried their name. LeBron James Jr. Now, he calls himself LeBron-y. He calls himself Bron-y. But when he put up that resume, it's like, maybe if it was just last name with James, it was like, are you in a relationship to LeBron? And then you could try to play it off. If your name is LeBron James Jr., I ain't even got it questioned. I know the relationship. Man, what? And you know the scrutiny that's going to come with it, too, if you don't meet the expectations. That's what you have to deal with. I think as kids, they deal with it far more from their peers than from anybody else because they'd be like, hey, hold on, you such and such, son, but why you ain't?
34:52Shannon Sharpe:You know what I mean? They have to deal with that. I'm serious. I mean, if you Magic Johnson's son, you Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's son, you Shaq's son, and you talk about the greats or the great or the historically great, you talk about transcendental players. We're not talking about generational players. Transcendental players. I mean, they transcend the sport. A generation is 25 years. That ain't what Shaq was. That's not what Magic Johnson was. That's not what Kareem is. That's not what LeBron is. You're talking about transcendental. They transcend the sport in which they play. And that's what I got to follow.
35:23Shannon Sharpe:And you're like, you think God going to give you all that talent and give your son all that talent too? People are going to be like, man, God, you so unfair you did. You ain't lying because he ain't going to strike twice. He's going to probably come through that once. but to have a household full of megastars and superstars? Come on, bro. How many times have you seen that? No.
35:42Joe Johnson:I mean, we got a few examples. The Watts.
35:45Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, but the dad. You might have brothers. Yeah, you might have brothers, but a dad and a granddad and all that.
35:53Joe Johnson:Quick. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
36:00Shannon Sharpe:Arthur Manning passed for 305 yards, four touchdowns, including Cam Coleman and the number five Texas Longhorn, eased into the season with a 59-7 win over Texas State. Coleman played the first two seasons at Auburn. It's one of the biggest top transfers in the country when he signed with Texas. He got three passes for 70 yards in his Longhorn debut. Relique Brown, who transferred from Arizona State, also scored twice. So now we've got to match up with two outstanding receivers on both sides. You've got Chris Henry Jr., you've got Jeremiah Smith, and you've got Brown, and you got Cam Coleman. It's going to be a great matchup.
36:35Shannon Sharpe:I think both quarterbacks will be ready to play. Now, the question is, we keep talking about these offenses, these offenses, the defense is going to have to play outstanding. Yes. Because we come for the offense. Let's be real, yeah? Everybody show up, you want to watch our offense.
36:49Joe Johnson:Remember putting up the points.
36:50Shannon Sharpe:That's what we come to see. In baseball, I want to see somebody hit the ball over the fence. I ain't coming to see no one-nothing shutout. I ain't coming to see, hey, strikeouts are fine and good, but nah, I want to see somebody hit the ball over the fence. If I'm playing basketball, I want to see 125 to 120. I ain't trying to see no 93, 97 victory. Yeah, yeah. If you're watching soccer, you want to see 4-5. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You don't want to see no 1-0. Oh, man, come on, man. Yeah. I want to see what England did to France. To France. Yeah, yeah. What would it be, like 7 to 4, 6 to 4?
37:22Joe Johnson:Every so often you'll get a game like that. Them boys out there, that wasn't but an all-star game.
37:26Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah.
37:27Joe Johnson:That was but an all-star game. Well, I appreciate it.
37:29Shannon Sharpe:I sure appreciate looking at that. But I think Archimandy, look, The expectation is that he's coming out after this season.
37:35Joe Johnson:You think so?
37:37Shannon Sharpe:I think so. I think so. Hey, with them arms, with that arm he got, them legs. Okay, Ocho, he a great dual quarterback. We know what the dual quarterbacks do in today's game. Very valuable. Hey, man, he have a hell of a season. We're talking about potentially number one pick. Right. I think the thing is he's more athletic than both of his uncles. His uncles run like that. He run like his granddad. Yeah. You know, his dad was a wide receiver until, unfortunately, Andrew, you know, cut his career short. But, no, I don't see a scenario where he goes back. I don't see what he gains by coming back and playing, especially with the money the way it is right now, Ocho.
38:15Shannon Sharpe:You think about it. What, Mendoza signed for about$60 million, fully guaranteed. In three years, he'll be in line for a contract,$350 million,$400 million. I'm not delaying getting to the bag any longer than I have to Plus, he done made money and remember the last couple of years he was one of the highest NIL earners he's earned 4.5, 5 million dollars a year
38:40Joe Johnson:Also, I don't know I don't think he comes out it's very imperative that he plays well this season Whatever you're chasing flex your next with new On Plus 12 milligram nicotine pouches Crushing that big Prezzo? 41:47Joe Johnson:If nothing played well this evening, the media are going to kill him. They're going to kill him and say he needs to stay another year. He needs to stay another year to develop more.
41:54Shannon Sharpe:They said the same thing about Ty Smith. Ty Simpson, how he do from Alabama, remember? They said you should stay. And he went out with the top 15 pick. And I think Arch Manning probably talent-wise is good, if not better. and then he has something that Ty Simpson doesn't have. He has Simpson on the back of his jersey. The other one had Manning on the back of his jersey. That means something. It carries weight. It's going to give you an opportunity that maybe some of the other guys would not get or haven't gotten, but I think he's played well. I do. I think he's played well, too. I'm like you, Unc.
42:27Shannon Sharpe:I think he come out this year. I don't think he goes back, Ochoa. I know he's getting a nice little grip when it comes to NIL, but ultimately I want to reach my dreams, bro. You know what I mean? That's playing in the NFL, being a top NFL quarterback. So I think his eyes are set on that. And I think, you know, Manning is looking to have a hell of a season this year with Texas. Well, he's definitely going to have to have one against Ohio State because Ohio State have four and five stars at every position. And the thing is now, when you're with these top programs, you have the best of the best high school players and you get the best of the best of the transfer report.
43:03Shannon Sharpe:So you get the best of the best and you're loaded at every position, offensive line, D line, you know, so you build your team from front to back, O line, D line, and then the skill positions. We know it, Jeremiah Smith. He's the number one rated receiver. I'm not so sure he wouldn't have been the number one rated receiver had he been able to come out last year. Hell, I'm not so sure he wouldn't have been the number one rated receiver had he been able to come out the year before that. So he's been number one for a long period of time, Chad, and he's special. He has an NFL body. He has a grown man's body as a 20-year-old.
43:36Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. And he's special. I mean, the catch that he made today going to the ground, he got it in one hand and let them know that I got this. Yeah, I got this. He is. He is. And I don't know, there's something in the water down there, Florida, they give it to these kids. But it's not a secret. I mean, you look at when it's come to skill position, it's really four states. It's Georgia, Florida, Texas, California. And what all of them have? Sunshine. Yep. Warm weather. Now, you want linemen, you probably have to go to the Midwest, something like that. Every once in a while you get a great offensive lineman from the South.
44:13Shannon Sharpe:But more times than not, they come from the Midwest. They come from Ohio State. They come from Michigan. They come from Iowa and things of that nature. But for the most part, the skill position, when it comes to skill, running backs, wide receivers, DBs, things of that nature, they're basically coming from four states. Georgia, Florida, Texas, California. What is it, man? and them boys still drinking out the water holes over there. You know that water hole water looks different. They still playing Chase. They still playing Chase. They still playing Chase. They still playing Chase. You hit.
44:42Joe Johnson:That throw up tackle. Listen, throw up tackle. Yeah. When the summer comes. You go outside. Your mama go outside. Your mama won't do one thing. She won't come in here for nothing. Don't come in here for nothing. If you're thirsty, the water holes on the side of the house. Turn it on. Now you turn it on first. You can't put it on first. Because that first little dress high coming out first. You burn your ass up. That thing been sitting in that hole for about three or four hours.
45:02Shannon Sharpe:Okay. Oh, yeah. Facts. Okay. Facts. Hey, you could go in and out the house, boy. Hey, you want to stay in or out? Because you let my damn hair out.
45:11Joe Johnson:Make your choice.
45:12Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. This is a side card. This is orange liqueur. Yeah. Lemon juice and Shea by Laportier. We got a little something, a little concocting going.
45:22Joe Johnson:Who's you dragging on?
45:23Shannon Sharpe:Oh, you know what I mean? I got a number of little Laportier in here.
45:27Joe Johnson:Yeah, I got a little mix of Azul Cruz and 1940s. What do you think?
45:35Shannon Sharpe:I mean, 1942. But you were six years off, but, you know, maybe they aged you.
45:42Joe Johnson:Joe, you know when you drink, you got to stick the pinky out.
45:44Shannon Sharpe:Oh, okay, you got to throw that pinky up. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
45:46Joe Johnson:You got the ring on it. You got the ring on it now.
45:48Shannon Sharpe:Mm-hmm. Breaking news. Michigan just survived an upset over Western Michigan. A Hail Mary. Michigan wins on the final play of the game. The ref put one second on the clock, and with Michigan prayers, our answer, Bryce Underwood threw a 47-yard Hail Mary. with one second left. Wow. That would have been tragic. We all know what Michigan has gone through over the last year. Yeah. Boy, this would have been cataclysmic. For them to lose this game? What? To Western Michigan? Oh, my goodness. That's why I tell you, man, you're vulnerable from the start of the season in college football because we don't got no tuning in.
46:23Shannon Sharpe:We've just been practicing against each other. So when you get another team out there, they understand how vulnerable you is to start the season. That's the best time to go in there and upset somebody.
46:32Joe Johnson:Absolutely. I can't, I can't, Michigan, offense.
46:38Shannon Sharpe:Michigan has always been anemic on offense. They've, I mean, I can't remember the time that they really, I mean, if you go back, if you go back to maybe Tom Brady or something, where they've been dynamic on offense. They've been, you know, Coach Schenbeckler used to have three yards and a color out of dust. You know, we're going to run the football. We're going to try to run. NBC rules commissioner, rules analyst, excuse me, Terry McCauley, The ball clearly doesn't touch the player by the time the clock hits 0-0. Hey, I got a question. Is the Bryce Underwood kid who they thought he was? I know he got a lot of NIL money.
47:11Shannon Sharpe:I think it was a couple years ago going to Michigan. He's got to grow into that. He's got to grow into that. He was so highly sought after Tom Brady reached out. Larry Ellison, I think he went to Michigan or his wife went to Michigan. They made a lot of promises. He's going to have to grow into that. but to have Tom Brady as a mentor and to be able to work with him, I think it was worth him going to Michigan and to give them the type of money where they get$12,$13 million, Joe. Something like that, yeah. Yeah, so you talk about an 18-year-old kid and say, hey, I got$13,$14 million, $12,$13,$14 million for you.
47:48Shannon Sharpe:I mean, I don't know a whole lot of kids that's going to be able to turn that kind of money down. Because that's transformational money, even if he doesn't make it to the NFL. Let's just say, you know, you take care of mom, you give mom a house, you got a great head start on life. Because that's what, look, we've all been very, very blessed to play this game at a high level. We got opportunities that our parents didn't get a chance to get. What we did with our kids is that we gave them a great start. Our kids started on second, third. As a matter of fact, they halfway home. We started at home plate, and we already had two strikes on us.
48:20Shannon Sharpe:I'm just going to keep it real with you, Chad. We started at home plate with two strikes already, and we already had two outs. So we had to get on base. Yeah. We got on base to give them a head start. So now they're already on third base. Yeah. They got a great head start on life. There's no reason our kids shouldn't make something. We've given them the best of the best of education. We've given them the best of the best if they want to play whatever sport they want to be. We gave them the best opportunity for training and for nutrition and supplements and things of that nature. There's no reason our kids should not.
48:58Shannon Sharpe:I don't want to hear nothing. They got to want it, though. You know, I think sometimes, you know, we put pressure on our kids. I don't necessarily want to say pressure, but we put them in situations so they can succeed. But a lot of times, man, what if they don't want that? What if that's not their dream? You know what I mean? You may see a kid, you're like, man, you got all the tools. You know what I mean? Let me help you. But if he don't really have that to want to help himself or herself, hey, man. Ain't nothing you can do as a parent, bro.
49:27Joe Johnson:Most definitely. Sometimes it's really difficult because you have a lot of parents that had aspirations to play at a high level. Yeah. Whatever their respective craft was, and sometimes you don't make it, and now they try to live vicariously through their kids and push and push and push. Yep. When the kids get old enough to rebuttal and say, you know what? I don't want to do this. Yeah. No, you force me to do this. It can hurt.
49:50Shannon Sharpe:My thing is that I didn't care what my kids. I didn't want my kids. My son, he didn't want to play smart. That's not what he was. But you're going to be good at something. Hello. Whatever you do. Yeah. I don't give a damn if you're a banker, you're a lawyer, you're a tech, you're a mechanic. I don't care what it is. Whatever you choose to do, son, try to be the best at it. Hello. I'm not saying you've got to follow in my footsteps. That was my dream. Yeah. I want you to live your dream. I want you to be happy with whatever you choose. Yeah. I've never put pressure on. Man, you didn't want your kid.
50:20Shannon Sharpe:I wanted my kid to do whatever he wanted to do. Yeah. his dream is his dream. My dream was my dream. I don't, I get enjoyment and pleasure out of seeing my kids happy with what they're doing. Not what I did. That was mine. I wanted to play football. That was my aspirate. And it was different, Joe, your kids, your kids, we had to get out. Yeah. Or that was going to be another generation in the same situation that generations and the generation, the generation before that was in. So we don't get out. Who's going to break that cycle? Right. And we had a reason to. Meaning you want to take care of Grandpa and Mary Porter.
51:00Shannon Sharpe:Yep. Me, I want to take care of my mom and my grandma. Yep. Ocho, I'm sure you was the same way. And I think that when you have something that you play for that's bigger than yourself, it'll take you a long way, bro. You have longevity.
51:13Joe Johnson:Yeah. I think, you know, CJ, little CJ Jr., obviously, he was Arizona State. He's been playing football all his life. Yeah. So I'm thinking I never pushed. Right. Like if you're going to do it, you're going to do it because it's something that you want to do. And obviously he gets to Arizona State. He gets to his senior year and, you know, calls me and tells me, you know, I don't mean to let you down and I don't want to let you down. But this is not what I want to do. He said, I didn't want to tell you because I didn't want to make you upset. I said, man, I wouldn't be upset. No. You know, what I did was my dream.
51:42Joe Johnson:Yeah. If you want to follow my footsteps and try to make it to the league, I'm here. I'll support you. But if that's not what you want to do, you got to do something. Hello. Now, whatever it is you want to do, I'm going to support you to the fullest, but you got to do something.
51:54Shannon Sharpe:Be the best at that.
51:55Joe Johnson:Yes.
51:56Shannon Sharpe:And you got to be serious about what it is you're trying to do. You know what I mean? Like, you get a lot of kids who just venture off and they're trying this, trying that, trying that. Hey, man, you have to find something, stick to it, and try to take it to the next level. But it's some challenges that come with that, bro.
52:12Joe Johnson:Big time. Big time.
52:14Shannon Sharpe:That's the expectations. I think the thing is, the number one killer of dreams are expectations. I didn't put expectations on my kid. I didn't expect them to be a pro athlete or anything like that. I just expected you to go get lucky. You had the best education that money could buy. Hello. You went to the school of your choice. You didn't go to the school that I chose. You went to the school that you chose. Right. So with that being said, now what's the excuse? Yes. You had the best of everything. Yeah. You had a mom and dad that loved you, did the best. We did the best we could because the way somebody else raised their kids and the way we raised you, that was the best that we knew how to do.
52:52Shannon Sharpe:There is no... People write books and say how to. No, that was how you did it. That was how to you. But everybody can't live. Everybody can't be that. And I'm okay. I'm okay with that. And I just think the thing is, and I think our kids, when I look back and I talk to my kids, it's like, I think they're pretty much happy in their careers. Yeah. My kids need to make like a million dollars a year doing a job that normally pays$100 ,000 a year, but they want to make a million. They want to be different. I was like, bro, it doesn't work like that. They're like, Daddy, we're going to have to work. Yes.
53:25Shannon Sharpe:Yes. I was like, your daddy's 58, and your daddy's still working. So my advice to you is to find something that you enjoy doing that it doesn't seem like work. Hello.
53:37Joe Johnson:Anything you're passionate about. That's it. There's got to be something you're passionate about. When you're passionate about something, you're enthusiastic about it. When you're enthusiastic about it, it never feels like work. Hello. Hey, when it's time for nightcap, it's don't feel like work. Yeah.
53:49Shannon Sharpe:Nope. Yeah. I love this. Hello.
53:51Joe Johnson:Man, stop playing. Hey, am I tripping or does that say 31-3?
53:55Shannon Sharpe:31-3. LSU has blown the game open now, Ocho.
53:58Joe Johnson:What quarter we in? Chat, what quarter we in, chat?
54:03Shannon Sharpe:I think it's still first half, man.
54:06Joe Johnson:You sure?
54:06Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Look at that. 213 rush yards to two. To two? Yeah. What, because he's that bad? Well, Dabo said, you know, he's going to develop his players. He don't believe in NIL and he don't believe in the transfer portal. Hold on. They'll make him a believer. Hold on.
54:24Joe Johnson:He said what?
54:26Shannon Sharpe:They'll make him a believer.
54:27Joe Johnson:He said it with a straight face?
54:28Shannon Sharpe:Mm-hmm. Hold on. Or is LSU that damn good? LSU, look, you can say what you want to say about Lane Kempen. The one thing he can do is coach. Yes. He can coach his ass off. Yeah, he quirky. Yeah, he tried to needle the establishment. He's going to push the envelope. I get all of that. Ain't no denying the man can coach football. Yeah. And I think the thing is, Dabo Swinney is going to have to adapt. You know, he's outdated. He's thinking that this is 1980s, 1990s, 2020. No, bro, you're in 2026. That's why Saban got out of there. Yeah. You don't want to have to compete with that recruit. It's a level playing field now, especially the teams who got a lot of money, Ocho.
55:13Shannon Sharpe:You know what I mean? Coach K. Yeah. He don't want no problem. One of them.
55:18Joe Johnson:Hey, Saban got out at the right time. He saw where we were going. He could see the future. He could see some of the players, the normal players that have an understanding. Okay, I have a starter right now that's a senior. And I got somebody coming right behind him. And every position was like that. They used to filter through Alabama, which is why he was able to go to what? 10 national championships and went six. Now, once the playing field was even, now I can't compete. I would say that's where coaching comes into play. In a sense, that would be disrespectful to say that about saving up. The fact
55:52Shannon Sharpe:of the matter is that he understood that what was coming on the horizon, it's not as easy as it once was. Yeah, we have all the best players. Because everybody has access to the same players that you have access to now. And instead of them guys coming to you wanting to come to your school, now you got to get out here and recruit. And, you know, with NIL, bro, and he getting older. You know, he don't want to be, I understand he flying, you know, he flying private to go meet some of these kids. It's not the same. It's not the same. And he understands that. But Michigan, boy, Michigan needed this win.
56:31Shannon Sharpe:Ooh. Excuse me, considering what they had gone through over the last year, and to lose this game to Western Michigan, boy, boy, boy, boy, boy, boy. Very, very tough. Josh Hoover threw for 231 yards, four touchdowns to Turbo Richard Richard, rushed for two more scores, and the defending national championship routed 52-16 North Texas. Hoover threw for 13-16 with no turnovers, despite having blood covering his face mask at one point. He's replacing Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza. After celebrating last year's title game, pregame ceremony, Indiana extended the football bowl subdivision longest active win streak to 17 games.
57:16Shannon Sharpe:The FBS longest active home winning streak to 16 games. He's got some big shoes to fill. It's always tough when you fill in shoes, the guy, not only did he win the national championship, and he was the most outstanding player in the national championship game. Yeah. That's a huge undertaking that you've got to follow that. That's the expectations. No matter what you think, that is the expectations when you go to Indiana. Man, it's only halftime, aren't you? Hold on. Did they have a... That's it? It's only halftime. I told you. I told you it wasn't even halftime. Did they have an unblemished record?
57:52Shannon Sharpe:Yep. Indiana did? Yep. Yeah, boy, they had to... Huh? Michigan won second. Yeah. Yeah, we just talked about that. Yeah, they threw a Hail Mary.
58:01Joe Johnson:Hold on. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I mean, what can Davo say to the reporter? What can the reporter ask Davo?
58:07Shannon Sharpe:Davo, what do you need to do in the second half to make this a competitive golf game? Forfeit? Yeah, he's going to have to go in that damn goal yard bag. These boys ain't coming to Clemson, man.
58:18Joe Johnson:He said he not. They ain't going to believe in NIL.
58:21Shannon Sharpe:All right, well, then what you going to get, Ocho? Hold on.
58:23Joe Johnson:They might score 60.
58:25Shannon Sharpe:No one lane. Oh, lane and run it up on him.
58:27Joe Johnson:He want to make a point. How do you make a point? I got to come here week one and show y 'all I'm not playing. Y 'all had all that noise talking about me leaving Ole Miss to come here, and I'm going to show you why I did.
58:37Shannon Sharpe:Hey, you're right, Ocho. I think he wants to make a great impression.
58:41Joe Johnson:Chad, can y 'all hear me?
58:42Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, they can hear you.
58:44Joe Johnson:No, they were saying my mic was low. Oh. I thought it might have been my jacket. That's good, though.
58:49Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, Lane Kiffin. Is that or that?
58:50Joe Johnson:See what I'm talking about? Yeah. Hey, I'm here holding it.
58:53Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, Lane Kiffin want to make a... He want to have a great impression, man. in that first game, he wanna shellacking. Yeah, he don't want no close game, he finna put these boys out there misery. He should, that's what he should do. Man, come on. Cause you don't wanna change, I'm gonna make you change. Who's that? Okay. You don't wanna change, I'm gonna make you change.
59:17Shannon Sharpe:31-3. Y 'all don't mind me chatting, you know I'm gonna get a little something, a little something, something, you know? Yeah. Something that'll raise your temperature up a little bit? Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know a little something right here. I already know it. Wish y 'all was here to join us. We had a time last night, too.
59:36Joe Johnson:Hey, we did, bro.
59:37Shannon Sharpe:We had a time last night, too. Good time.
59:40Joe Johnson:I lost my wig, though, bro. Did you? Yeah, I left it there. I needed it tonight for when I hit the pole, but I ain't got, you know, when I get in the character, Joe, in the character, I got to, you know, I turned into a completely different person, Joe. I hit the switch. Yeah. When it ain't that switch, I'm zoned out, I'm locked in. And you'll see tonight, Joe. It's inside of me ain't nobody ever seen. I know she was in L.A. back in 1997.
1:00:04Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Oh, when you were doing your thing. Yeah, when Twippendale. Oh, Twicks? They call them Twicks.
1:00:09Joe Johnson:They call them Twicks, yeah.
1:00:11Shannon Sharpe:They call them Twicks, Joe.
1:00:12Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe. Listen, I had to survive, Joe.
1:00:14Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, had to do what you had to do.
1:00:15Joe Johnson:I was coming from nothing.
1:00:16Shannon Sharpe:I ain't mad at you.
1:00:17Joe Johnson:I had to pay tuition. I had to pay for books. Come on, Joe.
1:00:21Shannon Sharpe:And guess what? That shit don't make him no bad brother. It don't make him no bad brother. Because you had to do that. You had to do what you had to do.
1:00:27Joe Johnson:I do. Most of the time you think about it, you think about dances. I call it adult ballet. Yeah. Most of the time you think women.
1:00:33Shannon Sharpe:Hello.
1:00:34Joe Johnson:But sometimes for us, like in order to be able to afford to go to Santa Monica.
1:00:38Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
1:00:39Joe Johnson:I had to get on that stage.
1:00:40Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Y 'all don't know about Twix. Twix can go up the pole backwards.
1:00:43Joe Johnson:Hey. What? He can start from the bottom
1:00:44Shannon Sharpe:and go up the pole. All the way up.
1:00:46Joe Johnson:Yeah. Yeah, man. Yo, listen. Something that ain't nobody else to do, I can go up the pole feet first.
1:00:52Shannon Sharpe:Y 'all got your liability forms in here. We need some liability for him. Yeah. What'd you say? What'd you need? Liability for him. What's the first part of that ability? Lie. Okay.
1:01:07Shannon Sharpe:Okay. Okay.
