In short

Episode topic: Nightcap Hour 2 mixes Dave East’s music/athletics talk with NFL hot takes, including Titans coach Brian Callahan’s firing and Mike Tomlin’s comments about the Browns trading Joe Flacco to the Bengals, plus broader quarterback/coaching debate and Q&A.

Guest backgrounds

Dave East is a New York rapper and actor, signed early in his career (Nas/Def Jam) and releasing his independent album Karma 4 after a five-year gap since 2020. The other voices are sports hosts/pundits (including “Ocho”) discussing NFL news and debating authenticity vs “snitching” in locker-room talk.

Key claims

Karma 4 is his first official independent project; collabs were natural due to personal relationships; adapting to modern rap requires updating production/lingo while keeping his lyrical core. In the NFL segment, the hosts argue owners lack patience, firing coaches too quickly doesn’t fix dysfunction, and Mike Tomlin’s out-of-character Flacco critique was “authentic.”

Notable examples

Karma 4 features Nipsey Hussle, Wiz Khalifa, Larry June, Key Glock, Mozzie, Jeremiah, Jacquees, and artwork homage to Tupac’s “Vag” cover. NFL examples include Titans’ 3-14/4-19 seasons, Browns/Flacco trade, and debates about Justin Fields vs Tyrod Taylor.

And now it's time for us to talk about the teams that are left as the field is whittled down to one World Cup champion on July 19th. 0:58Shannon Sharpe:birthday 10 15 25 here he is dave east day what it do yo what up my boy i'm good man i'm good we got ojo ojo what up nothing chilling man chilling man what's good everything good yeah everything healthy bro i'm looking at the karma uh four features collaborations nipsey hustle wiz khalifa you got larry june key glock mozzie jeremiah jacques manno tell us a little bit about the album what makes this album so special for you um it's my first official independent joint you know i mean i've been signed since i came in the game like 2015 i was signed with nas early on um i went on the def jam so it feel good to you know put it all together myself and um the last call my drop was 2020 so it's been five years since i did that touched into that series so it feel good When it comes to making an album Especially when you have collaborations like you do How difficult is it to have Everybody on the same page Hey listen, I need a verse I need to do this, sing you the beat How difficult is it to complete An album of this magnitude When you have collabs like that Yeah Yeah, no, it takes a while You know what I mean, because everybody got different schedules Everybody Running around, doing whatever they're doing So I would say the hardest part is just the time.

2:23You know what I mean? Like I had, it was a few feats that got right at the end. You know what I'm saying? Like right before I turned it in, I was like, thank you, bro. You know what I'm saying? But I would say overall, everybody that I worked with on this album, I got a personal relationship with. So nothing was forced. You know what I mean? It was all natural. Everybody got back to me when they could. It was love.

2:47Shannon Sharpe:And that's always nice to have a personal relationship because is it like when you will a big studio, they reach out and do a lot of this for you and because like, okay, hey, such and such, you know, Sony, Epic or whoever, Capitol Records or whatever the case may be. But now because you say I got a personal relationship, hey, you just pick up the phone and hit them your damn self. That's a fact. That's a 100 % fact. I ain't got no middle man with that. The artwork for Karma 4 is an homage to Tupac's iconic Vag Magazine cover shoot, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. Right. Who are some, like, obviously, when you do this, like, the Tupac thing, so obviously Tupac was a big inspiration for you, but who are some of the other inspirations?

3:30Shannon Sharpe:Who are some of the rappers you're like, okay, I kind of like their style. I kind of like their beat. Growing up, I was a big, big pun fan. Okay. I was, of course, Nas, Hov, DMX. DMX really probably made me feel like I wanted to write my own rap. I would get at the DMX, God bless his soul. It was a lot back then for me, just coming up. I never was really in a box. I listened to Snoop, Dogpam. I listened to Outkast in Atlanta. I listened to basically everything that was coming out of New York, Rough Riders, all of that. Dipset. I got an ear for a lot. You know what I mean? So I think me growing up and paying attention to all of them different styles, it gave me my style, like, musically.

4:23You know what I mean?

4:24Shannon Sharpe:The cover, was that your idea or was that, well, you're independent now, so it had to be your idea. It wasn't like it was a record cover. You know what? That was my cousin, Chet. He's a diehard. Like, I love Pac. I got Pac tatted on me. But he's a diehard, die hard like every lyric he know all the unreleased shit that nobody never heard like he's a Pac-Pac fan you feel me so one day we in the studio chopping it up and he said yo I got a I got a record on the album called crazy he was like yo for that video I'm gonna put on the any kind of look like Pac he got the ball he reminded me of Pac my cousin but he like yo I'm gonna do the street jacket in the video you know I'm saying and we're gonna we're gonna recreate to Pac, I'm like, nah, I'm gonna put the straight jacket on.

5:11So I basically kind of took his idea. You took his idea. You know what I mean? But I remember that vibe, that issue when Pac was on that cover. Me and Pac got a lot of similarities, I believe, just in just beyond just the music to the acting, in the Gemini. I just got a lot of connections to Tupac. And I felt like with me being independent now and a lot of things I've been through it's enough to drive you to the edge. You know what I'm saying? And I think I balance it well. So I really wanted to pay homage to Tupac with the cover. That's basically was the gist of that. You know what I mean? Hey, when it comes Go ahead, Ocho.

5:55I was going to say, when it comes to the era of music that we're in now, the sound, the way people rap. Obviously, when you think about New York rappers, you think about lyricists. Actually being able to understand what everybody is saying. You have an ear for the game. You've been in the game for a very long time. Is it easy to stay true to being a lyricist, being that you're from New York, or wanting to adjust to the sound of how music is right now, or the time that we're in? It changes every 10 years. Right. I think in any lane, you got to be able to, you know, add whatever's going on. Right.

6:39To what you got going on. That's the word I was looking for. You got to be able to adapt. Yeah. Because I think if you don't adapt, then your sound becomes dated. Your sound becomes the old. You know what I mean? Nobody wants to be the old. So I think with me, I got to do it my way. I got to stick to what I know, stick to what I love, but I'm always, my ear's always to the streets to what's going on today. You know what I mean? So production wise, what I'm talking about, uh, the lingo, I'm up to date with all of that, with the kids is talking about, you know what I mean? Like, so I'm gonna always add that into the music and what I'm talking about on the songs, you know what I'm saying?

7:18So the kids that might be 10 to 15, 20 years younger than me, they can still be like, Oh, I know what he's talking about.

7:25Shannon Sharpe:you know okay okay Dave but the thing is it's really tough to adapt because you have a sound and people are used to that sound and a lot of times when people try to get out of that box people like man I like the old Davies I don't like this new Davies and so you have to walk a tightrope of like giving the people the original the OG Davies that they're used to hearing while trying to sprinkle some new flavor in because it is a fine line because you hear a lot of time man I like the old sound better all the time but you know what I tell people to that bro I feel like with music for me I can only speak for myself with music it's like what am I going through at that time where's my life at that time so a lot of that a lot of times people like the music when I was still living in the projects I was broke I was trying to figure it out.

8:21I ain't had no jewelry. I ain't had no calls. So I might have sounded like I was starving. You know what I'm saying? When I go back and listen to it, I don't really hear too much of difference besides my voice, my tone of my voice. I got older. But I feel like with that, you can never, like you can't have the same child twice. You know what I mean? Like that's how I kind of treat it. Like in each one of my bodies of work, it's like a kid. Like, you know what I mean? Like I put a certain amount of time into that project. I was emotionally going through this during this project. You know what I mean?

8:55I can't recreate those feelings. I can't recreate people that might have died and was around me while I was making that music and the energy I was getting off of them and now they're not around them. You know what I mean? So it's like people don't know all that it takes to put into the music. You know what I mean? So yeah, I think it's just growth, bro. And the people that really rock with me, they grow with me you know i mean like as time go on they grow with me you play college ball at the university of richmond transferred to towson um clearly did you did you have hoop dreams or was he like you

9:30Shannon Sharpe:know what were you rapping and hooping at the same time i never was i never thought i was gonna be no rapper i never i never seen that i thought the league that's all my mom my pops my grandma that's You know, by the time I made it to college playing ball, that's all I had been pushing up to that point. Like, my family was behind it. Yeah, that just went left. You know what I mean? But the talent was there. I was blessed with all of the height, everything. God gave me all the tools I needed to play basketball. You know what I'm saying? It was just my mindset at 17, 18 years old. It wasn't what it needed to be.

10:10Shannon Sharpe:You weren't disciplined and structured. 100%. So who's your team? In what? In basketball. In the NBA? Yeah. Man. Knicks? I got to go Knicks, man. You know what I mean? I got to go big and wide, bro. I got to go Knicks. They let you there. They done let me there a lot in my lifetime. You know what I mean? I've been here a little while. All your entire lifetime. you're not some of your lifetime my pops can remember last time you know what I mean so yeah but I'm a I'm a Knicks fan bro I'm at the games I rep them you know what I mean I'm a ride with New York cause everybody when we talk when I talk I've interviewed a lot of guys on Club Shea Shea we have guys here on Nightcap and every name come up they talk about rappers who they talk man Davey's, man.

11:09Shannon Sharpe:Davey's got real game for real. Over the basketball. Yeah, I was talking to Herbo. I was talking to Chris Breezy. I was talking to Snoop. I was talking to Witt. I was talking to everybody. Your name is the first name come up. So I guess you be taking these rappers money, Dave. Nah, you know what it is? I think to be honest with you, bro, I think a lot of rappers, and I don't know nobody, like their background and their life and all that, but I think once they got on to whatever it is they got on, got their money, it became like a pastime for them, like a hobby. You know what I mean? Like something they do in their free time now that they've made it.

11:46You know what I'm saying? Right. Before I ever thought about rapping or making a song, I was hoping. I was hoping. You were hoping. I was hoping. You know what I'm saying? Like, really, really, you know what I mean? I was on that. So I feel like that. And the fact that now they got footage out of me, somebody put a clip together.

12:05Shannon Sharpe:So you can't swivel nobody now, huh? Nah. I'm a rapper now, man. I do the rap thing now, man. I acted a little bit here and there, but I fell in love with the music. Basketball broke my heart, man. I gave basketball mad years. It ain't go how I wanted it to go. So I had to hurry up and find something else. You know what I mean? To kind of save face. Like, my mom was like, what you going to do now? You blew that opportunity. You know what I mean? So I'm thankful for this music, bro. I'm real thankful for it. Who's your football team? The G's, man. The Giants. Oh, yo. Hey. And I just went to the game.

12:46And we just beat the Bears, man. You know what I'm saying? We just packed them up. You know what I mean? I felt I was actually in attendance for that win.

12:54Shannon Sharpe:I felt good. You know what I mean? Hey, y 'all know you're going to come to my high this week, though, Dave. You know it ain't going to go too well for y 'all, man. Y 'all play the Broncos, bro. Here you go. Here you go. you were recently on a part of cast of that mafia uh mafia thon three so what what's what's mafia what's it like that was dope man like like even with that like like y 'all was just asking me how do you keep adapt to what's going like that streaming world is a whole new it's a whole different animal that wasn't even going on when i came in i ain't been in it that long but that's super new and it got all the kids in a headlock down to my daughter that's they was tuned into that like you know i'm saying i'm like i put out stuff all the time they don't care nothing about it the cash did not come on you know i mean i'm like damn but that was a dope opportunity for me uh and i just saluted i was i was the energy in that and that cred was fire like they just like they living like how you would want to live as a kid you know i mean like if you could just be they grown they grown ass kids you know i mean like you could just do it doing all your homies in a big-ass mansion, doing whatever y 'all feel like doing, I think it's dope, bro.

14:05I think it's super dope. For them to invite me up there and let me do my thing up there, that was dope.

Best of luck on being independent. Thank you for coming by Nightcap, guys. Oh, Jordan, I really appreciate that. Appreciate y 'all, man. You know that all the time. Appreciate you. The World Cup is underway and it's been incredible. On our podcast, The Away End with Daniel Alarcon and John Green, we're talking about the games that have delighted us, the teams that have inspired us, what we're loving, and what surprised us, all through the lens of being massive fans of the world's most beautiful game.

14:54Daniel, this tournament has been magical so far. The expanded field of teams has created some incredible matchups that have already made this World Cup one to remember. And now things get even more exciting with the intensity of the knockout rounds as the field is whittled down to one World Cup champion on July 19th. When you say it like that, I get a pain in my heart that the tournament is over. But there's a lot of soccer yet to go. And if the first few games of the round of 32 are any indication, anything is possible in the lead up to the final. We've got it covered from an ultra's perspective here on The Away End.

15:27So listen to The Away End with Daniel Alricone and John Green on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

15:40Shannon Sharpe:Dave East, his new album Karma 4 drops on Wednesday. That's Kayla's birthday. Oh, Joe, the Titans have fired Brian Callahan just six games into his second season as head coach. His team was 4-19. The Titans were 3-14 in Callahan's first season, finishing with the number one pick and selecting Cam Ward. With Callahan firing, the past four quarterbacks drafted number one overall. six of the past eight see uh seeing their head coaches fired during their rookie season Trevor Lawrence Urban Meyer Bryce Young Frank Wright Caleb Williams Matt Eberflues Cam Ward Brian Callahan Ocho yeah it's not it's not the coaches it's not the coaches it's it's the owners hey chat stay with me real quick and understand this the owners have to understand that when it comes to football, right?

16:43The owners are businessmen, huh? And the stuff that they do, the stuff that they're passionate and enthusiastic about outside of football in the business world, the one way to fix it is you throw money at it. You throw money at it and that return on investment, it happens right away. When it comes to the game of football, this ain't a microwavable plate. You don't draft the quarterback, have a new coach, and put him out there on the field and think you all are going to have success right away. That's not the way it works. That's never been the way it works. Now, sometimes you get a quarterback, like you get a CJ Shroud, you get lucky.

17:24You get a Jaden Daniels, and you get lucky. You get a franchise-altering quarterback right away that changes the trajectory and speeds up the process of being a consistent team that can win. But listen, Brian Callahan getting fired, obviously, first year with Cam Ward. It's not the microwave. This ain't food. You can't just put it in there and heat it up, and all of a sudden you're going to have success. It just doesn't happen like that. It never has.

17:54Shannon Sharpe:They don't have patience, Ocho. They're not letting anything develop. You know, I used to have a saying, and I get my chickens by smashing the eggs, not by letting them hatch. There's a process in which an egg hatch into a chiclet. These owners are doing, they're smashing the eggs. They're not going to let it hatch. They fired the general manager. They fired Brable. They fired Rand Carthon. And guess what? Now they fired Brian Callahan. What are they doing? They don't know. My point exactly. So, obviously, they're not football people. They're businessmen. Well, here's the thing, Ocho. She is Amy Adams.

18:35Okay.

18:36Shannon Sharpe:I think the last is pronounced skunk. Yeah. Okay. Skunk. Her father, Mr. Bud Adams. Bud Adams. Yeah, okay. I know who that is. I know who that is. He passed away and turned it over to her. I don't know how involved she was at the time. Right. So you inherit this business, and if you haven't invested or spent a whole lot of time in it, you don't know a whole lot about it. You're trusting other people to run the business. Now, at least when Jerry passes away, hopefully that's not for another 100 years, his kids have been in the business from day one. So they're going to understand how this business works.

19:20Shannon Sharpe:So they have been a part of it since he purchased a team in 1989. They've been a part of it. I don't know how involved she was with it. So, and you're trusting other people. I don't know how involved they were with it. So it's tough, Ocho. It's tough. And it's not like another business. Because, Ocho, if your business is not doing well, you just don't sell it. You just don't start buying the CEO, start buying the VP, the COO. You don't start buying a whole bunch of people. You give it time. Yeah, you have to. You don't have a choice. But those that are in positions of power, I don't think they understand how the game of football works.

20:14You're drafting number one for a reason. Yeah, you're terrible. You're drafting number one for a reason. That quarterback is going to have his ups and his downs. Yes.

20:24Shannon Sharpe:I mean, that's just the nature of the business. But they say it's what? But these young quarterbacks go into dysfunctional franchises. If they was functional, he wouldn't be there. What the hell? There's a reason why you got an opportunity to pick first. Right. You're bad. How would that be fair that Kansas City win the championship and then they get the first pick in the draft? The Eagles win the Super Bowl, they get the first pick in the draft. We talked about this the other day is that the Lakers won the championship in 82 and guess what they got? They got to select James Worthy number one overall.

21:02Shannon Sharpe:Okay. How is that fair? Right. Damn. Yes. No. So normally the best. So normally the collegiate best player or what is deemed the best player goes to the worst situation because we want that guy to catch up. if we just put the worst, the best players on the best teams, they would stay bad.

21:28Shannon Sharpe:I just, they just, they're not going to give it time, Ocho. They're just not going to give it time because you're going to have to pay these quarterbacks. These quarterbacks are going to be getting$3 million. Excuse me,$300 million. Yeah, absolutely. And so there's like. But this is the problem. This is the problem that scares me. If you only gave Callahan two years, right? Yeah. You draft a Cam Ward. I'm not sure how much time he – I'm not sure how much – how many years are on his rookie deal. Do you have the patience with him? They got four plus the fifth year option. Do you have the patience with him as well?

22:05So I don't know. Stuff like that scares me. It scares me, especially when you're firing coach that early. Knowing that you're drafting or you're picking in a position you're picking for a reason. bringing another coach and still not having the players is not going to change the goddamn thing

22:23Shannon Sharpe:um i i'm trying to thank a quarterback that didn't i mean hey baker mayfield wasn't uh um freddie k fire doing bakers rookie year right so this is not this is not new this has been going you go back to last you go back to last decade plus and go back and look at them one overall picks and see their quarterbacks get fired during that first year that's crazy because a lot of times he was there uh the year before and they get to work your quarterback and they get you gotta go yeah okay hugh hugh jack okay okay so see it's this is this is not this is not something new has been going on, but I think now we're starting like, damn.

23:18Shannon Sharpe:What do you expect from a team that let Derrick Henry go, you didn't get anything for him, and you traded away A.J. Brown for Trillin Burks? Trillin Burks, yeah. And now he was in Denver, I think, today or last week working out. So do you think that is a team that is equipped? No. You let Derrick Henry walk out the door scot-free. You traded A.J. Brown. You had one of the better coaches, Mike Rabel. Yeah. And you fired him.

23:54Damn. Who going to be the next coach? Well, Mike McCoy was on the staff.

Read the full transcript

24:02Shannon Sharpe:So he's taking over. He was the head coach at the Chargers. So he's the interim. He was the offensive coordinator in Denver when the Denver went to that Super Bowl and they got the doors blown off him. But he, he was at, I think it was San Diego then in the mood. They went to the playoffs his first year, but then he ended up losing his job. So he's the interim coach at this point in time. I just don't think they have an idea. You trade your best player, the best coach you've had in a very, very long time. You fire him. You've gone through two, three general managers in a span of five years. That's not the continuity that you need in order to build a winning program.

24:53Shannon Sharpe:I just don't know if they're going to get it right this time around either, Joe. Well, listen, if they don't get it right, we might as well put our goddamn name in the hat and see if we can come away with it. Give us a little opportunity. You know, we could diversify our portfolio. No, I'm good. My portfolio is diversified. Okay. Okay. It don't hurt to add a little more now. Can you imagine Shannon Sharp, manager, Tennessee Titans? I've made it abundantly clear. I want no part. I want to cover the NFL in this capacity. I don't want to work for an organization. Okay. In any capacity. Okay. Mike Tomlin openly questioned the Browns and general manager Andrew Barry for trading Joe Flacco to the Bengals.

25:41Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, let's take a listen to what Mike T had to say. The World Cup is underway and it's been incredible. On our podcast, The Away End with Daniel Alarcon and John Green, we're talking about the games that have delighted us, the teams that have inspired us, what we're loving and what surprised us, all through the lens of being massive fans of the world's most beautiful game. Daniel, this tournament has been magical so far. The expanded field of teams has created some incredible matchups that have already made this World Cup one to remember. And now things get even more exciting with the intensity of the knockout rounds as the field is whittled down to one World Cup champion on July 19th.

26:17When you say it like that, I get a pain in my heart that the tournament is over. But there's a lot of soccer yet to go. and if the first few games of the round of 32 are any indication, anything is possible in the lead up to the final. We've got it covered from an ultra's perspective here on The Away End. So listen to The Away End with Daniel Alricone and John Green on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

26:44Shannon Sharpe:You know, to be honest, it was shocking to me. Andrew Barry must be a lot smarter than me or us because it doesn't make sense to me to trade a quarterback that you think enough of to make your opening day starter to a division opponent that's hurting in that area. But that's just my personal feelings. Look, Mike T, that's not his style. Mike T don't normally involve in the A. He always say that's not us. That's not the Pittsburgh Steelers business. Right. But why do you think Mike T stepped out of character? All right. Well, listen, they asked him a question. He asked him a question. He gave him something different.

27:25He gave him something different. And obviously, even he has to always show face and be someone that he's truly not. You know what? I feel like being myself today. I like that. One thing I told Young that I want coaches, I want players, that I obviously start doing, sometimes I want them to tell the truth. Sometimes I want them to say exactly how they feel. I want the locker room talk, the conversation that I had, to be said in front of camera. Now, what he just said just there is something he would say if there were no cameras rolling. I enjoyed that. That's authenticity. So you like what Tua said?

27:59Who? Tua. No, I don't like that part. That's authenticity. No, no, no. I don't like that. See, listen, I'm not throwing nobody under the bus. You said you wanted authenticity. You're not listening to me. I don't like the snitching on people. I don't like that part. You want authenticity.

28:17Shannon Sharpe:you can get to pick and choose what's authentic. If it's authentic, you want it. That's what you said, Chad. Is that what he said? Chad, help me out, Chad. You're confusing. Don't put authentic and snitching together. That's not together. I like Mike Thomas' answer because there's something most coaches or most people wouldn't say in front of the camera. So the fact that he did say it and it was out of character for him as a head coach means it's authentic. that's how he really feels so let me ask you a question Tua did is Tua was snitching and throwing people under the bus were they late did they miss did he lie what Tua said is what he was saying if the cameras weren't there that's called snitching cameras are not you said you want people to be authentic now you want them to be authentic sometimes you're going from one spectrum to the other so if we would talk about two i would say that snitching like i did yesterday now we talk about mike thomas is he being truthful is he being truthful yeah yeah who tour i don't know we weren't there we don't know he's hold on you how can it if if if he can't be snitching then hold on we weren't there we weren't there so he ain't snitching no he's snitching how you know you weren't there exactly because just the context and perspective of what i have to go off of you saying what we should do what i say nothing let me let me say something we should know anything about what's going on in that locker room you shouldn't add the quarterback we should know what anything about what mike thomas thinking why not come on why not how you trying to compare the two i'm just saying you say you want our fifth authenticity i do you said you want people to tell the truth yeah i was telling the truth he was telling what he experienced guys coming late guys missing you didn't like that because you said it's snitching but you said you just wanted people to tell the truth you want people i want people to be themselves wait a minute stay stay stay stay with me stay with me now now i don't mind i i i don't like the snitching part.

30:34You don't throw your teammates under the bus. As a captain, as a quarterback, you always take issues and put them on yourself. I do. Now, Mike Tomlin just giving his perspective based on the Browns letting Joe come to the Bengals. There's nothing wrong with that. Tua, just give me

30:55Shannon Sharpe:his perspective of why they're losing. No, stop trying. No, no. I can go about what you say. You say you want people to live in their truth. You say, I just want people sometimes, I just want people to come up there and tell what's on their mind. That's what you told me. I said, Ocho, you can't do that. You say, why not, Ocho? I said, because it's a detriment to the team. You say, I don't care. I just want it to be true. I just want people to stay. You say, stay with me just for a second. Stay with me right now. I said, okay, I'm going to stay with you, Ocho. I don't understand. What you don't understand?

31:32I don't understand, man.

31:34Shannon Sharpe:Listen. All two of them would say, guys, the reason why we're losing is that when we have a meeting and we scheduled a meeting, are guys going to show up? Are they going to show up on time? When we say we're going to do this, are we going to do it? Tell me what he's saying. Tell me the truth. That ain't nobody's business. That ain't nobody's business. You know you don't conduct yourself like that as a player. and mentions anything about your players. You don't put that business out there like that. You don't do that. Basically, if he was on trial, he done got everybody in trouble. We all go into jail for the tour.

32:13Shannon Sharpe:I know. So in other words, you don't want people telling the truth all the time, right? Come again? So you're saying you don't want people to tell the truth all the time, correct? I don't want people snitching. Snitching, there's a difference. No, it's not. You're confusing someone snitching and someone being authentic in their answer based on the perspective of the question that they're asked. Those are two different scenarios. How about this here? Snitching only takes place in the street. The street of snitching. When you partake in that activity, you're supposed to be a code. You and I do not partake in that.

32:53Shannon Sharpe:Whoa, whoa, whoa. Well, there's also an NFL code. What is it? inside that locker room should not be talked about in front of cameras or at home so we shouldn't tell the truth all the time huh so we shouldn't tell the truth all the time yeah you should you just shouldn't snitch

33:19we gotta live by a code if we don't live by a code what are we living for so we got so the locker room got the same code as the street yes yeah what you mean yeah it's the same it's the same oh it's your bad you gotta live by the code i'm just saying i you yeah you gotta live by the code huh okay and listen it's an unwritten rule too somebody didn't even have to explain it you just understand and know in that environment what you can and cannot do

33:52Shannon Sharpe:as a quarterback in the nfl or as a coach in the nfl there are things that you can and cannot do thank you that's all i want to hear we move on thank you that's all i wanted you to say but then you have some people like myself that's that choose to do the opposite yes that's all i wanted you to say ocho i'm like this man so much hey i'll go up there But I why can't a quarterback you put people on blast? Why can't the corner? Hey, you know good where the quarterback can do that? Ken Ward came out said I'm gonna be on the chalk man We fucking ass like that was refreshing. Oh, that was refreshing I get tired of hearing that goddamn same old rhetoric Politically correct from the same goddamn script was refreshing to teach that that tour told us the truth That guys be coming in late the guy be missing things It was refreshing.

34:48No, it was not. Hey, that goddamn cam board, now that was some funny shit.

34:54Shannon Sharpe:They asked Tua, what's going on? All Tua said, one of the reasons we might be, we got to take it serious. We got to make up our minds. Are we going to come in on time? Are the meetings that we scheduled, are we going to attend them? He was just being honest. Yeah, I got you. I got you. Oh, shoot. now you got me thinking this man told me this man been telling me it's fresh it's a breath of fresh air like and but you didn't like it i don't know like i don't that there's something i don't but i understand you said you want it i didn't want it because i understand the ramifications that come along with it because i don't know you know according to reports of sny network tyrod taylor has the support of some people in the Jets building as their QB1 over Fields.

35:50Shannon Sharpe:They feel like Justin was given the job without any competition. Yes, he was. Justin Fields got two years at$40 million and Tyrod got backup money. Yes! Mm-hmm. Hey, I'm mad things aren't working out, honestly. To be honest. I really thought I really thought this would have been really really good finally Justin Fields you get your opportunity you get your team you get to be quarterback number one you don't have to look over your shoulder you don't have to worry about Russell Wilson or being pulled Chicago I'm like god damn finally he gets his team he goes to a place where they actually want him correct Well, they actually want him, and that's one of the greatest feelings in the world.

36:43And for some reason, obviously, it just hadn't panned out. It hadn't panned out the way it could. As good as Justin Fields is, I've seen the flashes of brilliance from him, whether it be throwing the ball, whether it be running the ball or escaping the pocket and just extending plays. I mean, he can do it. You just have to find a way to string all those qualities together consistently over and over.

37:11Shannon Sharpe:Look, Tyrod is not the athletic phenom that he's not. I mean, Tyrod, when he came into the league now, Tyrod was athletic. You remember him at Virginia Tech? He can go now. He was the backup to Joe Flacco when they won the championship. He took Buffalo to the playoffs. Tyrod can play. Absolutely can. He can play. and so I agree with you but for whatever reason it hasn't clicked yet for Justin Fields it still takes a while for him to process it Ocho and you know at this level at that level in which he's playing at what you and I played at that clock's got to go off guys they're gonna be running scot free it's going yeah guys are not gonna be running scot free you got to throw guys open you got to throw with great anticipatory skills.

38:03Shannon Sharpe:And right now it's just like he's glitching. Bro, you can't hold on to that ball, bro. This ain't 7-on-7. They coming. They coming.

38:18Dang.

38:19Shannon Sharpe:I think. I think they give him a couple more games, Ocho. I do. Yeah, absolutely. It's too soon to pull the plug right now. Ocho, I'm not going 0-9 and not make changes. I've got to make some changes. But what are they right now? They're 0-6. I go to 0-7, 0-8. Come on, Ocho. What you want me to do, go 0-15 before I make a move? It's the next three games. And you know, once you make that move, if you go from Justin Fields to Tyrod Taylor, that just erases and scratches everything as far as him being. Oh, well, I'm trying to win games. okay I'm talking about the future Panthers Bengals, Browns oof shit that's tough he won't get an easier stretch easier?

39:16Shannon Sharpe:he won't get an easier stretch how many games did the Panthers win? 2? 3? they're 3-3 right? did you just see that the Panthers demolished the Cowboys or no? They're 3-3. Okay, what are the Bengals? 2-4. What's Cleveland? 2-4. 1-5. Browns are 1-5. So you got a 3-3, a 2-4, and a 1-5. All right. Give me the next three. They got a chance of winning one out of those three because they ain't beating the Panthers or the Bengals. Then they got the Patriots, Ravens, Falcons, Dolphins. Really? Okay, they might be the Dolphins.

40:01Shannon Sharpe:Hell, they might be the Ravens. Nah, Lamar will be back by then. Hey, if things don't go well, do you even bring Lamar back at all? Or you just let him... Yeah, yeah. Okay. Paying him$50 million, you damn right I'm bringing him back. Okay. What the hell you talking about? Hey, no chance in the playoffs? I mean... Who said they ain't got no chance at the playoffs? I'm just saying, if they don't, depending on when he comes back. Well, I mean, look, they're on the bye week this week, so this will be three weeks, almost four weeks a month. How severe was the hamstring injury? Yeah. Oh, well, he'll be back next week then.

40:44Shannon Sharpe:James Franklin is required to look for another job in coaching or broadcasting, according to the copy of the Penn State contract obtained by Front Office Sport. if Franklin's new job pays him less than the$8 million he's owed annually through 2031, Penn State only owes him the difference. So he's required. I don't know why he put that in his contract. He's crazy. I don't know why his agent let him. His agent couldn't have been Jimmy Sexton because there ain't no way Jimmy Sexton let you put that in your contract. Right. Hell to the no. You fired me, don't worry about what I'm going to do. I'm going to draw the pension from you.

41:23Shannon Sharpe:That's what I'm going to do. That's it. I'm worried about my check. Everything else ain't your business. Exactly. Definitely ain't.

41:33That's unfortunate. You never want to see anybody lose their job, but... That sucks. Now you got to pick up and leave. You done been there for a while. See, that's why I couldn't coach, man.

41:45Shannon Sharpe:Did Jimmy let him put that in there? Oh, my God. Yeah. but hell no i'm gonna who was jimbo fisher's agent the guy that he got 80 that he got 80 million and he ain't got to do nothing out of there jimbo gave him that i mean you see kirby smart buyout is 118 million god well listen kirby smart won't have to won't be in that position no time soon Ain't no way. What happened? He got, I mean, Jimmy Sexton is the coach's guy. I mean, probably, what, you say 70 % of the coaches? Probably 70 % of the coaches, Jimmy Sexton represents them. Oh, okay. Nah, I ain't looking for no job. You want Jimmy to represent us?

42:32You sure you don't want to put your hand in the hat, put your hat in the air?

42:37Shannon Sharpe:Hired who, Jimmy? Oh. Oh, Barstool is going to hire him for$1. So they owe him$7 ,999 ,000. That's funny. Work one day a week. That is funny. But I'm not, Ocho, we've been talking about this for like the last three weeks. Yeah, yeah. And I'm not surprised by this. And Penn State, they were just in the college football playoffs. I said, I get all that. I said, but go back and look at his record against top 10 teams. Yeah. He's beaten one top 10 team in the Big Ten since he's arrived. That was in 2016. He beat Ohio State. He's 4-21. The athletic director specifically stated it was against big games.

43:21Shannon Sharpe:You can't win big games. Now you're losing to Northwestern. Now you're losing to UCLA, who hadn't led all season long, hadn't won any games. Yeah, you got to go. Yeah, that sucks, man. You got to go. That sucks. You got to go. I hate to see people lose their job. I do too. But you know when you're coaching, there's volatility in coaching. Coaching is just like the military or being a Pentecostal minister. Yeah. You know you got to move around. Even if you got to move around. Penn State, Ohio State, Penn State, Georgia, Penn State, Oregon, or any of those ACC or SEC teams. They're just better. They got better players.

44:15There's a reason they were 4-21. There's a reason you only beat Ohio State one time since 2016. There's a reason.

44:23Shannon Sharpe:They say we've invested$500 million in upgrades to Beaver Stadium. We paid top dollar for defensive coordinator. We paid top dollar to keep some of these upperclassmen. And no, no, no, we're not going for it. You're Penn State. Yeah. You're Penn State. You're basing everything off the name. You're the Dallas Cowboys. Now, what's that gotten you in the past 30 years? Okay. Same thing. Jerry, see, here's the thing. Jerry is great at marketing. Penn State say, nah. Mm-mm. And here's the thing, Ocho. you know those uniforms i mean bro you got black cleats you got no name on the back of your jersey i mean i don't know do they got names on the back of their jersey no it's plain penn state uniform is plain white white helmets come on bro how you sell that when you're getting hair cut you can get a haircut at oregon in the locker room you get 50 different you get 50 different you get 50 different uniforms and you get to keep them all.

45:32Shannon Sharpe:Right. How you compete with that? How you compete with Ohio State with what they got going on? Michigan, the Georgia, the Alabama, the Texas, the Texas A &M. But I'm paying you. James Franklin making$8 million. So they paying him like he a big-time coach. You got to deliver, Ocho. Coaching only take you so far. What he should have said, you know what? You know what? Don't pay me this because I can't deliver like that. So don't give me no 10-year extension. You take their money. There's an expectation. You know what happens, don't you, when you take the money, there's an expectation of what? Every time.

46:08Shannon Sharpe:Results must follow. Every time. So. But that's what comes along with it. And coaching, you get into coaching? Yeah. I see. That's why we should do it. I'm telling you. No, I'm good.

46:26Shannon Sharpe:Time for our final segment of the evening it's time for Q and A. Hey, man, we could be like a package deal. Go ahead. No, I'm just saying. Go ahead. Ain't nobody else. Ain't got nobody else. I like snitching.

46:45Shannon Sharpe:D-Ton said, Ocho is right, Unc. You can be authentic without snitching. Thank you. Thank you. That's what I'm talking about. You're a real one. If you are a coach or a quarterback, at the highest levels, you cannot be authentic.

47:05Hold on, Unc. I was authentic. You play quarterback?

47:11Shannon Sharpe:Damn near. Okay. Unc, I believe the Broncos have the team to go all the way to the Super Bowl. Let's go, Broncos. 84 should be retired. I mean, look, we got to play a little better offensively, but it seems to me if I had to guess, Sean Payton was very conservative saying, look, if we don't put the ball in harm's way, they can't drive to beat us. You see that offense over there? It's anemic. It's pathetic. It's pedestrian. So with that being said, they're going to have to play a lot better Sunday against the Giants because that performance that they put on the field offensively will not get it done Sunday against the Giants.

47:50Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, Pitt, Cincinnati, you owe me that jersey from last year's bet. I'll let you slide because you're having a rough season. It's going to get worse. Over under two and a half, 2.5. How many tackles will Jamar Chase have on Thursday?

48:08None, because we're going to win that game. We're definitely going to win this game. A division rival, Steelers coming in Thursday night. You know, crowd going crazy. It's going to be about 40 degrees.

48:22Shannon Sharpe:you know he get cold in Pittsburgh too oh yeah I know I don't think the weather is going to have an impact who do I want? I want Aaron Rodgers I want Joe Flacco Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco is that how you feel? is that how you feel? okay okay and you're only saying that because Aaron Rodgers is playing well right now um your guy haven't played well in a while since the Super Bowl in 2012

49:00okay I just saw my guy have a 17 a 17 play drive down the field after halftime and he only been there for 17 minutes he's been on our team for 17 minutes and he took our team down the field and drove.

49:17Shannon Sharpe:He'll look worse on Thursday. Trust me. Let's bet. Okay. Now I don't want to bet, but okay. No, I don't want to bet. TS Car Wash and Detail Service. Y 'all had bling bling on yesterday night. Will Russ ever play an NFL game again? Yeah. Of course.

49:40I mean.

49:45hell

49:46Shannon Sharpe:I think he better than Flacco that's just me personally I'm trying to think

49:58Shannon Sharpe:question is is he okay being a backup yeah yeah I mean you have to know your role as you get further into your career as you get older you understand you can't do the things you you once did when you were young you're not in that position anymore i get it yeah see that's how you think it but let me ask you a question tell me what quarterback thinks like that hey and that's the hard part and knowing knowing when the journey is over knowing when you're not the main character no okay you still ain't told me the quarterback to things like that. Considering the man got 300-plus touchdown passes, he's won a Super Bowl, he's been to eight Pro Bowls.

50:46Shannon Sharpe:Hey, that resume looks beautiful. Yeah. And you think he's going to be okay being a backup, huh? Mm-mm. Hey, I mean, listen, reality has to set it at some point. It just does. It just does. I agree. If you don't believe it, they'll show you. how about that and they showed him oh you still think you're a starter well let me show you why you're not and you know he got eight million a lot of backups now that thing for to go down that thing for to go down to like two or three million damn and two or three million by the time you move your family get the family all up there get a place that's big enough it worth it i don't know where russ want to live i don't know if he's going to live in Seattle or he wants to live in I don't even know where Russ is from.

51:39Shannon Sharpe:I don't know where Sierra's from. But

51:46Shannon Sharpe:I don't know.

51:50Shannon Sharpe:Patrick Donovan. Ocho, let's bet. Loser shaves his eyebrows. Hashtag Steelers. Steelers are rumored to get Tyreek now that that can't happen. Maybe go after A.J. Brown. Ocho, if I get my eyebrows, can I get a signed jersey? I get your jersey, but I ain't playing my eyebrows. You ain't got no eyebrows. I do. Hold on. Hey, J-Dub, you hear that? He want to get that man a jersey, but won't give you your jersey. J-Dub, you might have to do something bad to Ocho. Hey, whatever you want to do, let me know. I'm here. J.J. Carver said Ocho really dressed up as his shadow. Ocho dressed up like an intern YN.

52:33Yeah. Yeah. I went to the concert I had a good time with the kids

52:40Shannon Sharpe:B.A. says now, Uncle Nocho tell me with a straight face that B.J. not the best running back in the league this year rise up yeah, you're getting a debate from us right now, he is he and Jonathan Taylor Jonathan Taylor been putting up stats too I don't know if you noticed it but he leading the league in Russia but yeah, B.J. has been phenomenal this year. Yeah, he's outplayed. He's outplayed C-Mac. He's outplayed Derrick Henry. He's outplayed Saquon. Right now, it's just he and Jonathan Taylor. Casey Taylor said, oh, I need you to copy and paste this message to Weezy F. Yo, Weezy, I know you know if you Drake and Barbie release a trio album only, y 'all would do numbers on numbers.

53:27Shannon Sharpe:Weezy, I need it, Weezy. We need it. F is for flawless.

53:35Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I know Weezy. Weezy ain't listening to me when it comes to no music. Who the hell am I? He ain't listening to me. You know, we collabed before.

53:46Shannon Sharpe:King me said, Lord have mercy, LA and the Mariners for the World Series. Good pitching tonight. It looked like the Dodgers going to go. They going to win again? They just won last year. Going to win again. You see who they got? At Shohei Mookie, Freddie Freeman, Hernandez. Boy, good, boy. Yeah. Drew, Freddie Freeman is a playoff monster. Let's go Dodgers. Here, did they win again? At Shohei Atlanta let Freddie go. Freddie was the Braves chipper. He was chipper, you know. What happened? I fell. On that turf over there? Yeah. Hey, I ain't felt that in about 13 years. Boy, I hit that shower. Ooh.

54:39Shannon Sharpe:Mm-hmm. Yeah, you don't know a lot of bumps and bruises you got to that adrenaline wear off and you getting that damn water hit it. Jason Zeldorf said, Dart is a dog. We coming from the NFC East Crown. We putting foot to you know where next week against the Broncos. Dart is way better than feels. Hey. I can't. and Scottie will run past her tail over. Boy, please. We got something for that. For Scottie Bowl? Yep. Oh, yeah. I ain't got enough for Scottie Pack. All right. Desmond Wilson, rise up. Falcons look good tonight. Can y 'all shout out my brother man, Zach Frazier? Zach. Yeah, Falcons did look good.

55:26Shannon Sharpe:I'll give it to him. They look good. Bjarne ran the ball well. Drake London and was catching it. Penix threw the ball well. Defense got after Josh Allen, sacked him several times, did a great job stopping the run initially. But yeah, they played well. Picked him off twice. Rise up, Falcons. Dylan Mitchell, Uncle Nocho, do you believe the 2019 LSU Tigers with Burrow, Jetta, and Jamar could beat the 2016 Browns? Is it possible for... No! God damn it. No! you tripping man hell nah what uh alex m said oh how how'd you hit slave so hard that you knocked yourself out yeah i knocked both of us out i did but i hit him i i hit it with with I dealt my head.

56:26Shannon Sharpe:I should have just caught it with that flipper. Who you hit? Chris Slade on a Monday night. You got him good? JJ, please tell people how good that 01 UM team. That might be the best team in college football history. Go back and look at those guys. Y 'all do realize Sean Taylor was special teams. Antrail Roll. They had Antrelle Rose. They had a... Phillip Buchanan. Phillip Buchanan. They had Clint Porters, Frank Gore, Willis McGahee. They had Jeremy Shockey. They had K2. They had another tight end that ended up going to the NFL. I think it was Everett. I think he went to Buffalo. Man, look at him off his.

57:10Shannon Sharpe:Brian McKinney. Yeah, it was loaded. McDougal. They had... Nose tackle. Vince. Vince Woolfolk. Yeah. They had like 16 first rounders on that team. Stupid. Stupid, stupid. All of the linebackers, Vilma. DBs, everything. Williams. Yeah. Real Carter, y 'all remember Cortland versus Andre. Lord. Yes. But see, that was in the field of play. Now, had they did that in the field of play, they probably would have got ejected, got fired, boom. But afterwards? What? Hey, every so often. David Amos, my pats are coming. The pats do look good. The pats do look good. And guess what? Buffalo do not look invincible anymore.

58:00Shannon Sharpe:And they've already gone to Buffalo and beat them once. Saucy D, speaking on what Tua said, Jerry Goff said last year, after the loss to the Commanders, he couldn't sleep at night for a month. A month? Bruh, I still ain't got over the loss to Jacksonville. That been damn near 30 years ago.

58:25Shannon Sharpe:And I won three Super Bowls. Ain't got a gold jacket. They shouldn't have beat us. Iso Noah up. What do you do if referees call an AK cheating the game like they did in the Bears versus the Commanders?

58:45Shannon Sharpe:I didn't notice any calls maybe I missed it guys y 'all gotta stop faking just because y 'all lose the ref cheated question for Ocho start bitch cut CBS Fox ESPN start Fox on yeah go ahead on your yeah fox definitely starting and what was it trade no start bench cut yeah i'm a bench espn um and i'm gonna cut c yeah hey boy hey them whatever good days yeah Yeah, babe. Yeah, I'm a day. That's your babe. Yeah, Fox let me act up. I'm pure fool. Let my hair down. Yeah. Saucy, across all sports, who are three athletes that you enjoyed watching in your life?

59:49Oh. I'm going to go Neymar.

59:58Mayweather

1:00:11Damn Djokovic I would say Alcaraz

1:00:25Serena.

1:00:27Shannon Sharpe:That's a good one.

1:00:41Shannon Sharpe:Boat. Oh. That's a really good one. Sir Cates, my guys, when it's all said and done for Aaron Rodgers, what will be three words that sums up his career?

1:00:59One of the greatest throws of the ball, no matter what you say, whether you like him, whether you don't. Yes.

1:01:13He was sensational.

1:01:21Shannon Sharpe:I still don't understand how he didn't win more championships with the team that he's had some good ones some really good ones man that when they went up against some good ones as well but you can't lose to Jimmy Garoppolo you can't lose to you had the better team and you were at home and you lost to Brady and you can't can't but he's one of the he's gonna go down as one of the 10 best quarterbacks to ever play I don't think you can put him over obviously you can't put him over Brady can't put him over Manny but he was phenomenal. He is as gifted at throwing the football, rolling left, rolling right from the pocket.

1:02:20Shannon Sharpe:He can change arm slots and he threw a beautiful ball. I still don't know how he didn't win more. Thursday night about to be an old bowl with Flacco and Rogers. Yeah, because Rogers is about to be 41 and Flacco's 40, right? Yep. Yep. Flacco is 40.

1:02:45Shannon Sharpe:Jontavius Collier. Can you give my brother Tracy a shout out for his birthday? He has the same birthday as your daughter. Absolutely. Tracy, your brother Jonathan want to give you a shout out. Happy early birthday. Yep. Your birthday is the same day as my oldest, Kayla. I'm sorry, baby. No birthday gifts this year.

1:03:14Shannon Sharpe:All you get is Daddy love you Chio Coggins How long do you think Tua remains The starter this year Well I think he's going to be the starter this year The question is how much long is he going to remain in Miami

1:03:31Almost Zach Wilson time No I don't think Nah, they won't do that. Nah. I'm just talking.
