In short
This episode is a sports-and-entertainment “Nightcap” discussion mixing music talk, NBA analysis, and a viral-feeling snake segment. Topic highlights: Darnell Jones (Donell Jones) talks R&B roots, songwriting, and his upcoming work; Rick Brunson’s coaching “rule” for Jalen Brunson; Jimmy Butler reacting to a snake “magic trick” and guests’ fear of snakes/spiders; Bleacher Report’s “99 best defenders of all time” debate; Achilles tendon tear timing and Achilles-spike study; Big3 Achilles experiences and injury prevention; Portland’s offseason fit for Ja Morant alongside Dame Lillard and others; and WNBA rookie Olivia Miles’ dominance.
Guests/backgrounds
Darnell (Donell) Jones, Chicago-born R&B singer (LaFace/Heavy D’s DJ/A&R connection; hits like “Where I Wanna Be,” “You Know What’s Up”); Rick Brunson is discussed as Jalen’s father/coach; “Smooth” (former NBA player, Big3 participant, Achilles tear experience); Jeremy and Josh (hosts/participants); Tony Allen is referenced; Olivia Miles is the WNBA player being analyzed.
Key claims/examples
Jones says he didn’t know hits would become classics; he credits family singing and aims for lyrical, imagination-driven R&B. Rick’s rule: cuss on-court is allowed, but off-court cussing leads to discipline. Defenders list includes Bill Russell, Tim Duncan, KG, Hakeem, Ben Wallace, Dikembe Mutombo, Dennis Rodman, Scottie Pippen, Rudy Gobert, Draymond Green, Dwight Howard, Kawhi, and others; debate centers on LeBron’s defensive workload. Achilles tears: players log more minutes before ruptures; “Smooth” links his tear to Big3 conditions and footwear. Ja in Portland must shoot/space to play off-ball with Dame/Drew/Scoot; Olivia Miles is cited for near 50-40-90 shooting and a 28-point, 6-assist game vs the Fever.

Everybody talk about the jump shot and the handles, you hear me? You know what I'm saying? But the playlist was just important. Before games, flights, locker room, R &B was always in heavy rotation. This brother music has been the soundtrack of a lot of our lives, whether you were in college, riding around with your friends, you know what I'm saying, trying to impress, shouting, you know what I'm saying, or just relaxing out there again. His records were always in rotation.
3:07Nightcap, help us welcome Darnell Jones. Darnell, where you at, baby?
3:17yeah yeah yeah yeah you know I'm gonna do what I do what I do man I'm good I'm good come on man tell me what's going on which what you guys shaking man in the lab man by to get it poppin you know you got I got to put something out yeah man you know you you been you getting ready for that you know be about to do the verses so I can't really say who is who is against right now but you know but we about to do that oh okay I'm going to be looking forward to that win that's supposed to be happening on the 20th of this month oh yeah hey D Jones man we appreciate you for joining us here on Nightcap man for the ISO takeover huge fan I got my boy Josh he from the ATL my boy Jeremy Parker
4:05Jeremy from the shot hey Donnell where you from bro you from the shot what part Yeah, yeah Okay, I see your daddy Roy Jones. He was uh, he was a gospel gospel singer man He was pastor, you know pathway last year man. Yeah Hey, can you can you can you turn your camera side? Okay straight up and down? Yeah, there we go. There we go. Appreciate that brother Is that is that uh Is that kind of how you got your, you know, where your music came from? Yeah, man. Well, my pops and my mom sang, you know, so I pretty much got it from both of them. But, you know, my whole family, man, sang, man. My grandmama, my uncles and aunts, you know what I'm saying?
4:52So everybody in the family sang. I just. So you was in the choir and all that? No, I was rebellious, man. I didn't want to do that. Oh, you were like Josh Smith over here. You were like, man, I ain't doing all that. I was rebellious, man. I was like, man, I ain't doing none of that. so so hold on though so how did singing it was just a gift for you what it was a gift man i started singing it when i was like five years old because i had i had been around it you know and um it really became something i wanted to do when i got to high school and i knew that i started singing to bobby browns and and the chicks was like feeling this i was like ah i'm on to something right here that that's what made me like like take it seriously then you know oh okay okay hey Tell me something.
5:32When you hear songs like Where I Want to Be, you know what I'm saying? You Know What's Up, Knocks Me Off My Feet. Today, does it surprise you how, you know, those classic songs have stood the test of times, bro? To be honest, man, I don't. Because, I mean, like, I still listen to, like, the Stevie Wonders and the Michael Jackson. Like, when I play those records, they still feel the same to me. You know what I'm saying? Like, they never get old to me. So I felt like I wanted to make that type of music, you know? And I really feel like I accomplished that. Hey, so when you were making these hits, bro, did you know they was classics off dump?
6:08Like when you was making, you like, or when you was writing, you was like, yeah. Like you knew. I ain't know that. Nah, I ain't know that. I just knew I made the type of music that I like to listen to. So, you know, but I ain't know it was going to be a classic. You know, I don't think we ever know what a hit is going to be. Because, I mean, it's really up to the people out there. They got to like it. You know, because I made some stuff where, you know, it really didn't hit. Maybe because a lot of people didn't hear it. So, I mean, we never know what's going to be the one that's going to really blow things up.
6:34But I felt really good about what I was making. Hey, man. Hey, we appreciate you for joining us here on NICAL for the ISO Takeover. Hey, in 1999. Smooth, check this out. 1999, bro. I'll never forget this. Chat, y 'all stay with me. I had graduated high school in 99, so I'm getting ready to go up to the University of Arkansas to play for the Razorbacks. I'm 18. So boom, we in the car, it's like a three hour drive. My uncle taking my, my uncle Mike, he driving me to Fayetteville. We get in the car, you know, normally we put something on, we just let it vibe. You feel what I'm saying? And I've always been like a slow jam kind of guy, D Jones.
7:14You feel what I'm saying? Like, bro, I work out to slow jams. Me too. You know what I mean? Yeah, that's just how it is. So me riding and listening to slow jam, oh man, that ain't nothing. So we riding. He like, man, I want you to hear this cat, bro. I'm like, and it's 1999, I swear to God. He said, I want you to hear this cat. I'm like, man, who you got? He said, dude named Donnell Jones. So he put the cassette tape in, bro. And then Where I Wanna Be came on. Come on, man. Come on, man. Hey, man, I've been vibing with you for a long, long time. I appreciate it, man. For real, man. A long time.
7:48Like, these songs that you came up with, these albums you came up, I know you still doing it. How often are you in the studio? Man, I live in the studio. I got a studio in my house. I'm here right now, you know what I'm saying? But I took a little bit of time off, man. I took probably like, I had got divorced, man. So I took like three years off. And I mean, I got the bug, man. I'm ready to get back in. You know, the first thing coming up, just came back from London, man. Fans went crazy, man. So, I mean, I'm really ecstatic about what's about to happen with me and R &B again. Okay, well, hey, man, we're going to be looking forward to this.
8:19Versus, you dropping an album here soon? I'm working on it. I'm definitely working on it. You're working on it? Hey, hey, have you ever, what'd you say, Smooth? No, I didn't say that. Oh, have you ever, have Atlanta played a major role in any part in your career? Atlanta played a big role, man. I mean, I got signed here. You know, I signed to LaFace Records. I'm from Chicago, but I lived in Jersey. Well, I got signed by ADF, who was Heavy D's DJ at first. And then he was an A &R at LaFace Records. So we came down and met L.A. Reid here in Atlanta. And from there, man, I played, I think I played Yearning and I played Natural Thing on my first album and In the Hood from the first album, man.
9:05When I played it for L.A., he was like, yo, man, I love what you're doing. But by that time, I had already written Think of You for Usher. So they kind of knew what I was doing at that time. But when I met him, he was like, yo, man, just I like what you're doing. Come back with a finished album and we're going to put it out. So, yeah, Atlanta played a major role. And then, you know, I came down here to hit all the colleges and we did the college tours. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a little different out here. It's a little different out here. Way different. You know, I mean, back then it was Freak Nick and all that.
9:35So it was popping. It was popping. Hey, you probably ran into Uncle Freak Nick. Probably. I have no idea. Hey, hey, hey. D. Jones, what the R &B game missing, bro? What are these young dudes missing nowadays, bro? What's up with it? I think they're lyrical content, man. I think, you know, there's so many ways you can say, I want to hate it, but you can be a little bit more clever about it. You know what I'm saying? Like, you know, I like to lead things to the imagination where you can make your own interpretation of what I'm saying. Because there always could be two different meanings to something you're saying.
10:10You know what I'm saying? Right, right, right, right. Right. I got you. I got you. Hey, I got a few questions for you, bro. We're going to get you out of here. We appreciate you for taking your time out with us. Hey, what's the favorite song you've ever written? That's tough. It would probably be on my first album, I Want You to Know. And then, Do You Wanna? Do You Wanna Love Me? Give Us About Suspicion. Yeah. Life Goes On. You know what I'm saying? The song about getting locked up. You know? I mean, that's another one of my favorites. Ah, yeah. Ah, yeah. And then Where I Wanna Be. Okay, better slow jams.
10:4290s R &B or 2000s R &B? I like 90s, man. I like 90s, man. Hey, hey, hey That 90s Yeah, man You know what I'm saying You got your Bobby Browns You got your Keith Sweat You got your R. Kelly's I mean, you got your Joe's I mean, it's It's too much, bro You know, it's a lot of good music That came out in the 90s, man Great music Vinyl or streaming? Vinyl, of course Something about hearing that crackle In that record, man When you put it on You know what I'm saying They don't know nothing about that They don't know nothing about that. Studio mornings or late night sessions? Hey, tell me something. How you like the vibe?
11:25I see you got the ambiance right over there. I see you got the ambiance. How you like a little vibe? I love a vibe, man. I light me some candles, man. I used to drink, but I stopped drinking. But I used to have me a glass of Chardonnay, sit back and chill, man, and put one in the air. I stopped smoking, too. So now I just got to find new ways to spark my creativity. yeah right right okay okay hey hey look man don't make you no bad brother man you know yeah hey i like it i like it i like it give us give us an artist bro you would love to collaborate with i mean honest i would love to collaborate dude man i mean and that's michael jackson man i mean i mean from from from day one man i've always uh loved his music i i feel like uh um without him i couldn't be me you know um god man and so yeah it would be michael jackson but if it of today's artists man you know chris chris brown i mean it's it's so many big artists eric bellinger i mean it's it's a lot her i really love her um lma oh yeah you know oh no no she she she's she's incredible she's one of my people yeah incredible smooth you be you listen to her smooth oh absolutely yeah what what give me give me a couple r b uh cats you listening to right now smooth yeah um i listened to a couple of new ones let me i gotta i gotta look at the dude uh name let me i'm about to tell you right now hold on man because hey hey d jones give us give us give us one of your songs bro that you want you know if if if you could tell the audience if you could tell nightcap one song you want them to go back and listen to off one of your albums give me a I would say check out Guilty by Suspicion.
13:07Oh. You know what I'm saying? Guilty by Suspicion because, I mean, I'm telling the chick, like, I've been cheating. I've been cheating like a motherfucker, right? But I'm trying to tell her, I'm like, you know, you don't really want to know the answer to this question. This is going to end our relationship. You know, so, I mean, I'm guilty for loving you. So let's just keep it at that. You know what I'm saying? But I'm innocent, though. It's just one of those records, man. Yeah. Yeah. hey hey hey that's what's up hey hey chat chat i need y 'all to uh put in your favorite darnell jones song in the chat man and let me see what y 'all work hey let me ask you a question too man i'm gonna put both of y 'all on the spot man can i get a jersey oh man i got you go say left whenever you want to hey hey hey i got you yeah if you don't ask man i'm telling you man i gotta ask i mean it's just a once in a lifetime opportunity I mean, you know, I know how to get a I'm gonna definitely send one your way to a big big big legs.
14:06Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Shout out big legs. You are the biggest. Yeah. You already know. Hey, DJ. Hey man. Thank you, bro. Much love, man. Have a good man. Yes, sir. God bless. Yes, sir.
14:24Hey, smooth. My guy. That's a legend bro overly a legend man overly overly a legend one of them and he one of them ones real talk like yes sir i i i wasn't blowing smoke because he was on here bro like in 99 smoo when i got put on donnell jones bro hey man you know when you it's certain music it's some it's certain music that you hear germany and it takes you back to the time where you was at when you first heard it you say y 'all bear with me right now i'm hearing it right now yeah hey hey man that man has some major hits and y 'all know if i got an r b playlist partner he on there at least two three times you hear me yeah jeremy what'd you say put the whole album on there it is bro he got some stuff on there man you can just play straight through you know what i mean and just super dope brother, man.
15:24Hey, listen, Rick Brunson, on being the, Rick Brunson on being the coach to his son, Jalen Brunson, Rick said, we have a rule, just like Josh. You can cuss me out on the court, but if you cuss me out off the court, I'm a father, I'ma get my damn belt. Smooth, smooth. You think you could have played for your pops, bro? You could have played for Pete. Absolutely, yeah. I was playing for him without playing. When what? I was playing for him without playing for him. He used to come back to the behind that bitch. He cussed me out so smooth. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I wanted to form him at the right temperature, especially in high school, you know, AAU, you know, they let your parents, especially when you cold, they let your parents kind of do a little bit, you know, do what they want to do a little bit.
16:13Hey man, listen, I commend Rick Brunson, bro, because for you to be able to coach your son and Jalen Brunson, you know, for your pops to be able to coach you. Think about that. I'm watching them in the finals, bro. Is he warming up? Is Jalen warming up? His dad passing on the rock? Come on, Jeremy, man. This stuff we only dream of. You know what I mean? And it's dope that the dynamic is what it is. You can cuss me out on the court, but I don't have to call you. I'm still your father. I think because Rick played, he's bright enough to understand when and where to press and when to let up. Yeah.
16:49Yeah, I think it's a whole dynamic. I commend Jalen more than anything because as fathers, you want to – that is a dream of ours to be able to coach our kids one day and then to be able to allow us to be able to do it. But I commend the son because for him to be able to be willing to embrace it and understand that his dad is going to wear multiple hats for him in his life, for him to be able to know which hat he's putting on at that particular moment, And for him to be able to appreciate that is big because, you know, if you – me and T.A. was having this conversation. And I think a lot of us had these kind of issues when it comes to our sons.
17:29When we want to teach them and talk to them, we're basically telling them we have the answer to the test, but it's like they want to fail the test a little bit to see if you got the answers for real, for real. You know what I mean? Yeah. I commend the son for like more so than the dad. You know, the dad is living out his dream because every dad will be willing and wants his son to be able to understand what they trying to show him, you know what I'm saying, instead of them taking it personal. You know what I mean? Yeah, man. I mean, that Knicks run not only goes down in history, but, you know, Jalen Brunson, Rick Brunson, that relationship, bro, that's forever now.
18:09You know, they, I mean, they won in New York, German. Come on now. We know what, we know what we've always talked about. You know, we always know New York is a mecca of basketball. They hadn't won in some odd years. You win in New York, man. Come on, man. What are you going to put that man's statue at? It's coming soon. He might have to put it in when they put it out there. I think society too always wants to, wants to, wants to, even, even in this AAU space that I'm in, they, guys are intimidated to talk to the father. They love to see the woman come around the corner with no dad. You know what I'm saying?
18:40Oh, yeah. They run a little game on her on their man. Oh, man. They flipping and dipping her. They love to see her come around the corner. They love to see her sweet little lie. You know what I'm saying? Meanwhile, the dad, you got to be able to kind of shoot him straight. You know what I'm saying? Well, the dad can see through the BS. Absolutely. But, you know, when they do call the BS out for what it is, now the daddy is crazy. Yeah. Deal with him, man. he be this, that, and the third. Nah, man, this man is a straight shooter. He wants the best for his son. Yeah, hey, Smooth. Smooth, I totally agree with you.
19:18I look at the AJ DeBasca situation. You know, his pops and his mom are right there, full circle, taking care of everything for him. Taking care of everything for him. Kell Brown Jr. too, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And keep the leeches away now. Absolutely. Keep the leeches away. You know, hey, Smooth, I may not see all of them, Jeremy. You know what I mean? but I'm gonna catch a few. I'm gonna catch a few, but damn, if you can help me out, you know, hey. Yeah. Cause you need, I'm telling, I'm just keeping it 100, bro. I'm just keeping it 100. It's a difficult, it's a difficult, huh? I mean, people used to pull up on me.
19:51I used to give my dad number. You know what I'm saying? They used to come, man, man, what's up, man? Let me holler at you. Man, Boop, give my dad number. Hey, okay, I got you. Boop, send him my dad number. I'll send him right down the street. Hey, think about this now, no German smooth. Hell, now we ain't got to do nothing. I'm just going to slide in and butt a DMs. Hey, hey, hey, young man. Listen, if y 'all don't think that ain't going on, y 'all tripping. Oh, yeah. Oh, no. Oh, that's going on to the 10th power. Man, Jeremy, you don't think that's going on, bro? You got to check all the DMs.
20:24TikTok. I think so. They got the right buffers around them. They got the right buffers. Like you were saying, AJ DeBanson with his family, them kids can't even get to them. And AJ is such a different kid. I don't know him, but from hearing him speak and understanding his demeanor, I think he's in the right headspace, right mind. That's the biggest key, bro. Exactly. You know what I'm saying? That's why I love some of these young kids that got that mindset of understanding what it is and what they are. And I think one of the ones that really - I think like the top five or most of the top picks of this year's draft have a strong, you know, forefront when it comes to the parents.
21:04You know what I'm saying? And Caleb Wilson, his parents are in his life. And they locked in. You got the Boozers. Then you got Darren Peterson. And also, like you said, we just said, AJ DeBanson, all those guys. Mikael Brown, it looked like A-Cuff parents is solid and connected around him. So all these guys that are being successful in this space, it looks like it's coming from a two-parent household, or if it's not, the mom is allowing the father to be present. Right, and it looks like they're all great kids. And for me, for a guy who really enjoys watching the game, playing the game, I mean, still to this day, live and breathe it, like I like seeing cats, bro, who really enjoy playing the game.
21:58AJ loved playing the game. Caleb loved playing the game. Dan Peterson loves playing. Booz loves playing. A-Cuff, like, I like to see that part. You know what I mean? Because the passion that you have for the game, bro, you can't hide that. You know, either you enjoy playing or you don't. And all them dudes, I mean, they all been having a microphone in their face for the past. When you're moving like I do, trips don't always come together weeks in advance. 24:26From relationships and identity to sexual health and HIV prevention. Because when we stop treating these topics like taboos, we give ourselves permission to take control of our health and live more openly. I felt like in our community, we weren't having these open and honest conversations about sex with no stigma attached to it. A lot of times people could feel like embarrassed to talk about things like sexual preferences, about STIs, what we're doing in the bedroom. And I didn't want to feel like that was taboo for us to be able to do. And so that's really the reason why I started Lip Service.
25:02And I think for all of us, we have to take control of knowing that we care about our health more than anybody else ever will. You can listen to this special episode of Lip Service sponsored by Care for the Culture from Kiliad Sciences on the iHeartRadio app or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm going to leave her alone so she can come out. Oh, my God.
28:45She's going to come out. Jeremy, you got the biggest fear? What's your biggest fears, bro? Animals? Yeah. I don't do large animals, man. I don't know. They might have had a bad day. I don't do horses. I don't do none of that. They might have had a bad day. You never know. they ain't gonna take it out on me hey hey smooth come on yeah you ain't got no fear no animals bro no no rodents or nothing uh nah them uh them big them big cats though you know what I mean them lions and tigers all that going in the cage with them and all that stuff I'm cool on that though oh no sir I ain't playing with my life like that but how this man got a whole snake over there and I ain't even knowing I was over there Why would not have came in that house?
29:29I'm glad I know now, though. Boo, I'm glad I know now. Damn. I'm saying smooth, the kids play with it and all that? Yeah, actually, yeah. My seven-year-old, Drew, he played with it the most. He think it's so cool to go in there and pull it out by himself. He think he's the bravest. He just want to show people he's brave. No. Yeah. She wants to see what's going on. Look, her head now came out, you see it? Oh yeah, oh yeah. She about to come over. Oh no sir, re - She ain't hungry, is she? I don't know. You don't know. Nah, I mean, I fed her what? Last week, she ain't hungry. Nah, she ain't hungry.
30:13Hey, cool, I'm gonna make sure she ain't hungry. Hey look. She might, you know what I mean? They, I mean, snake. Hey, hey, hey, my oldest. It's a snake, bro. Hey, she might. I remember we had a conversation about, we was in Houston and Dwight had a snake and he was trying to prove it to everybody that a snake is better than a dog. And like people was arguing like, man, get the hell on. So James was like, man, you can't tell a snake, like, hey man, get the hell on. Like, stop, no, move, move. You know what I'm saying? So he was like, yeah, no, you can't, but it's still the best animal. Then like the next day, he had a snake, took it out of the cage and bit him.
31:00He couldn't practice. He had to mispractice because the snake bit him. Man, my oldest, Gavin, he asked me about two years ago. He was like, Pop, man, I want a snake for my birthday. You gonna have to get the hell up out of here. Ain't no way in hell no snakes stand in here, man. What? She finna come on out now. Come on. Oh, no, I can't do it, man. I can't do it. I'm sorry. Smooth, I didn't know that, bro. I didn't know you rolling like that, partner. Yeah. I was slipping. Yeah, little snake. She helped me - Hey, check this out. Little Hennessy. You say, what's her name? Hennessy. Hennessy. Hennessy.
31:45She's here. Oh, no, sir. Hey, boy. Yeah. She trying to come holler at me. She trying to get out of it now. Come on. Oh, no, sir. She know what you're saying. She don't know what you're saying. Come on. Yeah, I'm trying to tell you. Come on. Come on. Come on. Oh, yeah. Good to see. Yeah. Oh, no, sir. Boy, I'm so glad I know you got that now. Hey, listen. Hey, let's check out Bleacher Report. 99 best defenders of all time. Just that list that Tony Allen was talking about earlier. Look, we got Bill Russell, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Hakeem Olajuwon, Ben Wallace, Dikembe Mutombo, Dennis Rodman, Scottie Pippen, Rudy Gobert, excuse me, Draymond Green, the round off the top 10.
32:43Then after that, you go David Robinson, Kawhi Leonard, Dwight Howard, Gary Payton,
32:56Michael Jordan, and then you got, oh, that's what it was. You seen T.A. on it, that LeBron was ahead of him? Yeah, T.A. like 23, Brown, what, 22? Yeah, yeah, it is. Brown, 22. T.A. 23. Did you say Dwight Howard, though? Yeah, he said Dwight. Okay. Dwight, 13. I'm going to keep it 100 with you here. I mean, there's some tough ones in that top eight. With Bill Russell, Tim Duncan, KG, Hakeem, Ben Wallace, the Kimba Mutombo, Dennis Rodman, Scottie Pimmons. But Dwight was a smooth note. Yeah. Smooth grub with him. But we played him. We played him real playoff series against that man. That man was defensive player of the year.
33:45he was clogging up the paint by his damn self truly hey thanks so a18 you seen ta on here ta went in man ta say hey hey i told ta i said man all them damn jobs lebron gotta do bro you want him to chase the best player around for the whole damn game how do you think he gonna be able to do all the jobs he got to do man hey hey i'm with ta on the window ta had to guard everybody and ga told y 'all if he ain't doing that he ain't playing he no he's supposed to that the base of what we're saying he's supposed to do that yeah yeah that that was his only job he can't take one break he can't he can't and that's how it was bro yeah but see he he definitely did take one break but i think joe was trying to tell him like he couldn't take one break on that's one thing lebron had eight things that's what i was saying You can't take a break on eight.
34:44You know what I mean? I absolutely agree, but we're talking about one list of one thing. Yeah. But if I tell you, if somebody specified what they needed you to do, you know what I'm saying, as far as like in the league, I just need you to do this one thing. No, I agree with you. I agree with you. You will have longevity, you know what I mean? You would have probably played 12, 13 years. you know what I'm saying I agree with you I'm just saying though just one thing you know what I'm saying yeah I get it bro check this out NBA players he was elite at it though oh yeah like you said though elite for sure I played with T.A.
35:34a year and we were down 20 to Golden State this is Clay and all them, they're a little young at this time, but they still boogieing. And we down 20, we get back in the game, and T.A., in the middle of the game, he come out of the bench and said, I'm about to get this steal. I'm sitting over there like, yeah, okay, whatever. I kid you not, that man got this steal, that same play. He knew exactly what was coming. It was extremely impressive. I think that was one of the first games where he started doing the first team, first team, first team. But people don't know how smart of IQ you have to have to.
36:06Man, there you go. You got to really watch a person's whole game. You know what I'm saying? You got to watch the game. Maybe more than one time. You know what I'm saying? Just to be able to see, you know what I'm saying? Just pay attention to the details of how he scores, where you want to score the ball at, how you can make him counter to what you want them to do. Yeah. And you hear that man, his flowers again, man, if there's one person I wish I could have took more from, watching them develop and play and all of that was Tony. Tony's from Chicago. It's kind of a Chicago thing. You got Darnell Chicago, Tony Chicago.
36:50Yep, yep, yep. And sitting there learning from Tony, I wish I would have took a little more of that in because he's the ultimate pro, man. Because if he doesn't do what he did, like he said, man, he's probably overseas somewhere. But Tony was the ultimate pro. walk around his laptop watching film all three hours before the game playing future the whole time that's tone oh yeah listen that's tone you gotta revive his career after that that that crazy injury he did when you know he dunked that ball and came down and you know it was a dead ball and towards acl he was able to come back and and stay you know what 10 more years after that was special.
37:29Oh, yeah. For me, man, because he guarded me, you know, a lot, it was him being able to anticipate. He had great in, you know, he was great at anticipating, you know, timing your dribbles, you know, timing your steps. And that's what great defenders do, bro. I always felt like, though, if you was a pretty good offensive guy, like I ain't never really thought you should have been bad defensively. You know what I mean, Jeremy Smoove? Meaning like because you're so good offensively, You should be able to like, I feel like defense is a will. It's a want to. You have to want to play defense because you should be able to be able to anticipate guys before they do moves because you've done them so many times.
38:08It's body language and how people move. And if you watch enough film and you lock in, bro, but when you're out here doing eight, nine other different things, some going to have to take a little back seat. You know what I mean? And T.A. wasn't lying. He wasn't lying now. but you ain't putting brawn on the best player no whole damn game and you want him to go do 10 other different things no sir re-bob it don't happen like that hey nba players achilles tendon tears are linked to small spikes in playing time study finds a recent study found that players log more more minutes than their season averages during the 10 to 15 games before their achilles tendons rupture what do you guys think about achilles tears smooth you tore your achilles in the big three hold on before you get to your story germany he tore his achilles in the big three guess who had to wheel him through the airport yeah look like look how god worked look i see i i i come to the airport i see smooth he's struggling and buckling in a wheelchair i'm like damn what's going on i said come on man let me get that man rolling man up Hey, Smoove, tell us, man.
39:21Tell us about that Achilles tendon tear, bro. It's nothing to play with, man. It's no joke. I'm saying, did you feel, before you tore it, did you feel anything? Like, did you feel it getting weak? Did you have any problems a week prior? Or it just, it was normal? No, I didn't. I mean, I think, I think when I dunked the ball, because I haven't did it in a long time, I think it probably put my body in the shot. You know what I'm saying? You know what I mean? Like, kind of like, you know, when I was playing the big three, I already had my mind made up on how I was gonna play it. I wasn't trying to go 100%.
39:57You know what I'm saying? You already know. It's a great league, but you know, you gotta be able to, you don't wanna go out like, you don't wanna blow a tire like that. In that type of environment, you know what I'm saying? I would've rather did it in the NBA if I was gonna do it, you know what I'm saying? But for me to be able to have a healthy career like that and then go to the big three and then do that, it was kind of like I didn't pick a ball up for a minute. But I don't know, them low shoes. I used to wear like mid-ears and highs. I don't know. I'm trying to blame all kind of stuff. Maybe because I had some lows on.
40:33I don't know, man. I don't know how it happened. But I pumped fake it and tried to pull off that right. But it fell. I'm saying, did you look back? You thought somebody tripped you like it normally happened? Yeah, when I look back and I ain't see nobody there, I was like, I knew what it was. I just shook my head, man. I couldn't believe it. Man, listen, when we were playing here for the Atlanta Hawks 2000, this had to be 2009, Jeremy, I was sitting out. I don't know if Smoot remembers this, but they had sent me out for like a week. Smoot, y 'all went on West Coast trip. I think you had them cut up.
41:09You had them balled out West Coast trip. I was here in Atlanta with Wally Blaze getting treatment every day. It was your calf, right? Yeah, it was my calf. My calf was sore. I had a knot. I literally had a knot in my Achilles, in the middle of my Achilles, and Doc told me, he's like, it's going to pop if you keep playing. So they ended up shutting me down, Jeremy. So the team going off. I'm just going to the arena every day, just getting treatment, me and Wally Blaze. And after about two days of treatment, I'm like, Blaze, man, I got to break a sweat, bro. I ain't broke no sweat. Like, they going to come back off this road trip.
41:41You know, they're going to throw me back out there. I'm already 35, 40 minutes a night. You know what's going to happen. He was like, because you know, with that type of injury, Smooth, Jeremy, you can't, it's hard to walk, let alone jog, get on a bike. You can't do none of that. Like when that thing inflamed, it's a wrap, bro. You know what I mean? So, so he said, he said, man, you should come try hot yoga with me and my wife. I look at him, Jeremy, I'm like, man, I ain't finna do no damn hot yoga. That's exactly what I told him. I ain't finna do no damn hot yoga. And boom, I grabbed my bag, Smooth.
42:10who I left. His wife called me on the way to the crib. She's like, Joe, I think you should come try the hot yoga. It'll loosen up your quad muscles, take the pressure off your knees. It'll loosen up your hamstring, take the pressure off your low back. It'll loosen up your calf muscles and it'll take the pressure off your Achilles. So I'm like, all right, she done told me something. Now I'm willing to do anything to get back right, get back healthy. Hell, y 'all finna come back off the road, Smooth. I'm ready to get back out there, get to some action. Right. Boom. Jerry, am I going now? I meet them up there.
42:42We do the hot yoga class, bro. I've never in life sweated this hard in my life, bro. I felt like a totally different person after class. After class, I'm talking about I felt like my movement was better. My body had done opened up. You know what I mean? I ain't here. I still got some aches and pains, but I feel pretty damn good. Boom. Blaze tell me, he said, just meet me at the arena the next day, and we just come follow up with treatment. I said, all right, cool. But I was so geeked. I'm like, man, I'm going back tomorrow because I felt good. I felt like if I go two days in a row, he was like, nah, don't go two days in a row.
43:16Just come to the rent and get treatment. I was like, all right, cool. But I still went anyway. I ain't telling. Man, I almost passed out in class because I ain't understand hydration. Hydration. I ain't understand how to hydrate, how to replenish the body. Because hot yoga, although it's a detox and it takes all the bad out, hell, it takes all the good too. So you have to put the good back in. I ain't understand that early. I'm just going, you know what I mean? I'm getting my little stretch on because I wasn't flexible at all. I couldn't like, you know, touch my toes or none of that. And without flexibility, you know, you're bound to get injured.
43:53You know what I mean? That's what they kept telling me. So man, I took a liking in the yoga bro for Wally Blaze who hooked me up. But if it wasn't for that, I probably would have had a real major Achilles tear. I'm talking about, I literally had a knot in mind. Like, I couldn't even walk in the morning, bro. That's how bad it was. So, hopefully, you know, we don't have no more Achilles tears to, you know, none of our top guys in the league, bro. But it's unfortunate because this is what we talk about, German and smooth. You know, these guys take the regular season. They just kind of take it as a joke.
44:25Not necessarily as a joke, but they don't really take it that serious. They want to, you know, hurry up and get to the postseason. Well, when we get to the postseason and you out there going full throttle and you ain't went full throttle all damn year, that's when we starting to see these tears because every possession is idle at an all-time high. You know what I mean? Like you playing your hardest. So I can kind of see how these Achilles tears are happening, but I hope they can crack down on it, man. I seen my boy, Dame Little. I said, he been in the gym. He look good, man. He look like he getting back.
45:01You seen him, Jeremy? Man, that man at gym every day. Every day working hard. Got to admire it, man. Got to admire it. For sure. I do, bro. You know. You feel so good. I seen him running some 17s like you back in high school. I seen it too, bro. Yeah, bro. And don't sleep on what's going on up there in Portland right now. What you mean? What's going on? What you got? You see what they just did in the first round. You getting Dame back and they just made a move. Man, them people. Hold on, hold on, hold on. Hold on, hold on, hold on. And people are doing something. They went and got Ja, Jeremy. They can't keep all them guards.
45:36You got School Henderson. You got Drew Holiday. You can't keep King Ruff. Some got to change. But what they got up there, they got something up there. They got something, but here's a question. Second-round team, for sure. Hold on, hold on, hold on. They got something, but here's a question. Will Ja, as great as he is with the ball in his hand smooth, will Ja be able to play off ball? Because we know Dame can play off ball. Hell, he can catch and shoot with the best of them. That's what I was about to say. We got to see what Ja been doing as far as his floor space. Can he catch and shoot? Can he space the floor like how you said Dame can do?
46:16Or like how Drew can do. Drew done mastered the art of space in the floor as well. So that's going to be the next evolution, the next step of seeing. And that's the only way that this whole thing is going to be able to work. If guys are able to play off ball a little bit, let the other guy kind of like run the offense or be able to get touch paint whenever to be able to, you know, make teammates better as well, too, to kind of take that pressure off a job of other guards. Yeah. Yeah. You know, A.A., y 'all both know, man, the point guard position nowadays is at a premium, meaning, man, if you can't score the ball, hell, if you can't shoot the ball, and that's my only concern, in germany when we talk about portland uh job job three-point percentage has been bad bro i think he had i think he low 20s man if i ain't mistaken you you don't have jobs had to take more off the dribble in memphis he had nobody can get off the ball and handle that ball and create for him now you're getting up there to portland where you got dame is gonna handle the ball you got drew that can handle the ball you got scoop whether they bring them off the bench or not that can also create open shots for him i'm not saying he gonna go up there and shoot 45 But when Dame's shooting that ball at the clip he's going to shoot it at, they got to help off somebody, and that's an easier shot for Ja to take his time.
47:32And I'm sure he's in the gym because he's got some get-back he wants to get, I'm sure. For sure, yeah. I want to see Ja get back to having fun, man, enjoying the game, smiling, doing his little celebration antics. But I ain't going to lie to y 'all, bro. I ain't going to lie. I'm a little worried because, you know, it's a lot different when he was in Memphis and he had the ball in his hands every damn possession. So it ain't really that hard to get in rhythm. Now, you in Portland, you're going to have at least two other elite guards next to you, meaning Dame Lillard, Drew Holiday, or School Hensley.
48:10You're going to have at least two of them. And I don't know if the rep's going to be enough, bro. I'm going to be honest with you. I don't know if the rep's going to be enough for him to really get in ref form, for him to really kind of get that, gain that confidence back. I hope it is, but if he struggles with shooting the basketball, you know, playing off these guys, it's going to be a lot tougher than what I think people anticipate, bro. I think they got better players around them now. Like Danny has come on in. That's exactly what I'm saying. You're making my point. But they make that move.
48:46They got to let him be who he is. they gotta let him be who he is because if you don't I think he's the he's the only point guard out of all those four that can just touch paint whenever he wants to though so he he creates a different type of advantage over the rest of those guards because you know you got like Damian Littles coming off of an ACR injury but even before that he wasn't really trying to go to the hole and touch paint for real like that he was doing step back jump shots and shooting deep threes. Yeah. You know, I think Drew Holiday is more of a set-up guard, but he's getting older, so I don't think, you know, touching paint at will is part of his game anymore.
49:30Yeah. And, you know, Scoo Henderson, he's another guy that can touch paint as well, but I haven't seen him be an elite playmaker yet. So I would like to see him take the next step of being more of an elite playmaker. He has the athleticism and the physicality to be able to get in the paint, but I want to see him make his teammates better as well. See how he can see the floor a little bit better. You know what I mean? Hey, I'm with you on that, Smooth, because he showed me something in that Spurs series and that first round, them first two games in San Antonio. I'm telling you, look, we know the defenders, that San Antonio guy, they couldn't do nothing with him them first two games, bro.
50:10What confidence do in that moment? That confidence carrying over into next year no change yeah but but look though that's what i'm talking about like damn school had a great showing in the postseason but now he coming here he behind three damn other point guard yeah the coach how he posted how he supposed to be able to get ears off you feel what i'm saying so i don't know man i hope portland figure it out obviously they got a good problem uh hopefully you know all those guys stay healthy i'm looking forward to a dame one of my favorite players to right so yeah they're gonna be a lot of fun hey fellas i don't know if y 'all been watching the w nba but uh olivia miles from minnesota this season she's averaging 19.7 points per game 4.7 rebounds five about six assists 30 30 50 38 88 no that's a stat line 50 from the field 38 from 388 from the free throw line.
51:10So she almost 50-40-90. Yeah, you look easy, Joe. Man, listen, she will be the highest scoring rookie point guard since 97. Jeremy, you're right. She's smooth. I don't know if you've seen her play, bro. No, I seen her. You know, I watched her when she was at Notre Dame. Oh, did you? Yeah, then she went to TCU last year, but she's cold. She's one of them ones for sure. Bro. I'm definitely a fan. I'm definitely a fan, man. Bro, look, she went off against the Fever today for 28 and had six assists, 11 for 14 from the field, three for six from three. Man, y 'all are so nice, man. I'm talking about, like, when you watch - I can't wait till they get that.
51:55When they get the other girl back, what's up? She back, uh, uh, uh, nah, it's, what is it? The Fiesta called, yeah, she back. She cold, she's cold, she cold. Now, they got an opportunity to probably win the whole thing now that she backed off. Hey, smooth. That's exactly what I was going to say, bro. It was legit, bro. Man, listen. Jeremy, when I watch Olivia Miles, bro, you know, we watch great point guards. The most glaring thing that sticks out is their patience, their poise, their pace that they play with. You know what I mean? Bro, she can see. It's the dimes she make. It ain't just the scoring for me, man.
52:32It's like the feel for the game. Do you look comfortable out there? Like, her moves look like dudes. Like, she out there, she hitting girls with, I'm talking about a yank snatch. I'm talking about, come on, man. That girl got a total package. Shmoo, you right. I think they got a great chance. They got a great chance to compete for a title. I'm still rooting for ATL, though. I'm still rooting for ATL. Jeremy, you like watching Olivia Miles, bro? You got to. If you appreciate the game and you see the pace she plays with and how she finds her teammates and she's getting to the basket and the fact that she's almost 40 50 90 is unreal bro and and she got that she got that little flair in her game too that i like you know i mean somebody who shit everything hey hey hey hey smooth she want all the smoke out there man for sure they can play bro she got game like hey look i'll spend my money to go check out you hear me and she letting the girls know that they can't guard her oh yeah every time she barking she barking at him yeah yeah she got a little chip on her shoulder.
53:34I like that though. Check me out. It's time. When you're moving like I do, trips don't always come together weeks in advance. Sometimes production shoots, interviews, or something I've got to travel for on a short notice. Like the time when I had the last minute trip to Denver and everything came together fast. Once it was locked in, I had to be ready to go. That's where Amazon Prime can make a difference. When something comes together quickly, you can get Get what you need like grooming essentials, neck pillows, eye masks, even snacks for the flights so you're ready to show up for it. With same day delivery, all those items show up on time and still make the trip so you can show up and focus on why you're there and not everything around it.
54:14Because at that point, it's not just about getting there. It's about making the most of the opportunity in front of you. That's what I like about Prime. It makes easy to say yes when the moment shows up. Same-day delivery, it's on Prime, available in select areas. Terms apply. Visit Amazon.com slash Prime to find millions of items delivered fast. 55:31Learn more at rasmussen.edu. Hey, it's Angela Yee from Lip Service. In a special mini episode, we're talking about why open, honest conversations matter. From relationships and identity to sexual health and HIV prevention.
56:13And I didn't want to feel like that was taboo for us to be able to do. And so that's really the reason why I started Lip Service. And I think for all of us, we have to take control of knowing that we care about our health more than anybody else ever will. You can listen to this special episode of Lip Service sponsored by Care for the Culture from Gilead Sciences on the iHeartRadio app or wherever you get your podcasts. We let them go on the run late. That's a good team. And if they get in the playoffs, it's going to be a tough out for somebody. It is, bro. It is. Anytime you got Lance Stevenson and Bees on the team, that two-head monster, bro. You know they can probably get there. you just can't let them other guys get involved and that's kind of you know i see what y 'all do y 'all got a lot of guys who can guard knock down the three y 'all athletic enough to stay with them and a lot of teams ain't got that bro yeah and that was one of the focus that gp had when he was putting the team together and shout out to gp for allowing us to be who we are man and uh having our back through at all because gp been been screaming for me uh as much as he can all season that's what's up bro that's what's up man keep going i see you the finalists as far as you know mvp talk.
1:01:06I know there's still a lot more work left to do, but keep going, bro. Yes, sir. Appreciate you. Yes, sir. The LA Riot beat the Houston Rig Hands 51 to 48. Dwight Howard came back to the city of ATL and put up a season high, 18 points, 8 for 13 from the field. Both threes he took, he made. He had 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 0 turnovers. Brandon McCoy, who was Who's this McCoy guy, Jeremy? Brandon McCoy is actually from Chicago, played high school ball in LA. At one point he was the number one play in the country. Was he? Yeah, at one point he was the number one play in the country in high school. Six, 11, seven feet, can move a little bit, can shoot the ball, he can play, he can play.
1:01:50Yeah, Brandon McCoy went for 19 points. Alongside him, Jordan Crawford, my guy, added 12 and six assists in the ride shot. 52 % and won the glass 20 to 15. L.A. is firmly in the driver's seat for the fourth and final playoff spot, but DMV, and they are in. They got to beat DMV, and they are in. Dwight picked a hell of a week, bro. 1:03:30Yeah. And he was like, I don't know if the big three is going to follow that rule or not, but you know what I'm saying? It's - That's a good one. That's a good one. It holds weight. That's a good one. But the man is very difficult to guard. He is, bro. And I - Hey, hey. I'm going to tell you something. We were picked to finish last in the big three. You say what? 1:08:52The dog too, man. Oh man, what you talking about? He's always gonna find a way to get minutes. I mean, I'm pretty sure Kyler Perry didn't expect him to play that many minutes throughout the season, but he showed why he was able to stay on that floor, man. And I think he's the implementer player. The reason why Kyler Perry is telling the new regime that came in that, hey, look, I'm gonna play dogs. You know what I'm saying? And I think that's because of Malik and Acuff. They demonstrated that type of mentality when they stepped on the floor, especially being that young. I think he going to give himself an opportunity just because of who he is as a player.
1:09:33Yeah. Got that dog mentality. Got that dog mentality. Ain't going to be denied. You know what I mean? Ain't going to be denied, man. A hard worker. He's going to put the work in. He's going to come to work every day. Hey, you're right, man. Once you figure that out as a young player, bro, you put the work in, Everything else will come. People will freely give you information. Oh, yeah. They see you having your head down, and they're seeing that you just want to work. They're going to give you information. They're going to give it to you. You know what I mean? Absolutely. Yeah. Absolutely. The Convo Starter said, great work this week, ISO.
1:10:09Question. Appreciate that. Question. If y 'all three could play in today's game, how many points do you think you're average? I got chicken without, you know, folks ain't really pass me the ball like that. I had to get my own. You know what I'm saying? I averaged me a 15 off of that. Come on now. I had me a little Jannero Parker, one of these little short point guards that they got to give me a little lob or two, a little dump off in that dunk.
1:10:46you can add about eight to that you know what I'm saying oh yeah yeah no doubt Jeremy what you think in today's game hey man you're not finna get me cooked in this chat I'm gonna stay on my lane I'm gonna show that bench the A good shot ISO you don't think you'll come in get eight to ten points a night what I think I know I can get 18 I can get 18 there you go don't be modest I'm gonna throw a couple of lives a smooth give them a couple of dunk downs Tell him, but no, tell him, Proctor. It took me light-skinned niggas in today's game. Tell him, man. You punch one of these little, one of these little, you know what I'm saying?
1:11:23One of these red bones. Hit one of them red bones in the chest, man. You know what I'm saying? Hey. Hey. Hey, knowing what I know now, I'll probably be about 33 at night. Yeah, I'm going for 33, Shmoo. I'm going to be one of them. Yeah, yeah. I'm walking in the locker room. I'm like, Shmoo, I don't want none of that BS today. Yeah, this is how I'm coming today.
