In short

Nightcap Hour 2 is a sports-and-life talk episode focused on the New York Knicks’ championship parade and what comes next, plus a “little brother” theme.

Guests

Ocho (former NFL player; discusses NFL camaraderie, bus/plane travel, and winning/losing cycles) and Joe (former NFL player; talks about professional dress codes and sibling/family stories). Max Kellerman’s claim is debated: if OKC swapped SGA for Jalen Brunson, OKC would beat the Spurs. Ocho and Joe disagree, arguing OKC’s injuries and lineup fit mattered, while Brunson’s clutch production and the Knicks’ spacing/defense balance are key. They also cite Vegas giving the Knicks the 4th-best odds to win the 2027 Finals (Spurs best, then Thunder, Celtics).

Notable examples

Knicks’ 10,000-officer NYPD-secured ticker tape parade; Knicks’ playoff chemistry (Brunson, Cat/Bridges, Josh Hart, OG, OG consistency, Mitchell Robinson rebounds). The “little brother” segment shares sibling dynamics, including a cereal-without-milk story showing care and belief.

2:59Goodbye.

3:00Shannon Sharpe:The next victory parade in Manhattan on Thursday were reportedly safeguarded by 10 ,000 members of the NYPD, the largest number of police officers ever assigned to a planned event, the department said Wednesday. The contingent will include heavy weapons teams, explosive detection, canine transport, transit, highway aviation, drones, and more, according to the police. The parade will kick off at 10 a.m. near the park at New York's Financial District, and the route will continue along Broadway until it reaches City Hall, where Mayor Zohar Mandami will present the next keys to the city. the route known as the Canyon of Heroes for his history and settling of a ticker tape parade.

3:45Shannon Sharpe:Thursday ticker tape parade for the new NBA champions will be a first. The team won its title before 1970 and 1973. It was honored with New York's signature professional. It was. Oh, yeah. They had no parades back then. I don't know when the parades, when the victory parade started, guys. I don't know when it started, but it damn sure wasn't going on in the 70s. Yeah.

4:07Joe Johnson:Hey, that city going to be lit, boy. Lit it, boy. Hey, but it don't surprise me that they got all this security. But for New York. Because nobody going to act a boo. You already know it. You already know it. It's somebody who going to be feeling froggy and they going to jump. You already know it. You already know it. If they act the way they did after games, after winning games, sometimes even the game that they lost and they was acting up, imagine the parade. We champions. boy they finna show they you know what absolutely Teddy you wanna go to the parade

4:45Joe Johnson:Teddy better like 8

4:46Shannon Sharpe:man why Teddy ain't sleep what's 11 o 'clock he said I'm gonna go to bed like 8 15

4:55Joe Johnson:yeah it's 8 o 'clock

4:57Shannon Sharpe:he said and plus dad was eating some popcorn so I came and got me a little bit

5:03Joe Johnson:hey you ain't got Teddy no girlfriend

5:05Shannon Sharpe:or nothing man? Teddy said I'm fixed Teddy said I don't do no child support all the money going to me you done got him fixed?

5:11Joe Johnson:you done cut the man man you ain't even let him experience it?

5:15Shannon Sharpe:nah damn man and then you can't let them go to the park if they not fixed

5:22Joe Johnson:hey they can't go to the vet they can't go to the park they can't do nothing

5:28Shannon Sharpe:Titus ain't fixed but I think Titus go to the vet Oh, do we? But a lot of times I have them come to the house. Yeah. I need to be around because he a handful. Yeah, he is. He a handful when you don't see daddy.

5:42Joe Johnson:Yeah. Hey, that's how mine is. I get the, they on wheels. They come over here, you know, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You got to have that. When you got them big masters, them big dolls, who you know if you drop them off, they going to act a fool. Boy, please. And people don't build that.

5:58Shannon Sharpe:You know, hey, Mr. Sharp. I just left. What you calling me for? Damn, you done already?

6:05Joe Johnson:Yeah, he got us hemmed up in here.

6:07Shannon Sharpe:But that thing's going to be crazy. That thing's going to be crazy, and it couldn't happen to, you know, like I said, I don't really know any of the Knicks players. You know, I follow them. But it's hard not to root for Jalen Brunson. It's really hard not to root for him.

6:21Joe Johnson:It is. It is. And not only Jalen Brunson, but when you look at Cat, who's from the area, when you look at when you look at Bridges when you you know those Josh Hart guys who've been fighting with Brunson since college you won a college championship and now you get to win on the NBA man I just love the chemistry and the continuity that they have as a unit they look great together they look like they have fun I enjoy watching their podcast bro so kudos to the Knicks man this was great for basketball especially Cat

6:52Shannon Sharpe:because he caught a lot of criticism oh man he proved that he can play, he can be a major contributor. Maybe he didn't need to be the central figure. Because now they try to diminish you if you're not the central figure. So if I'm in a movie and I ain't got the lead role, so I guess that doesn't make me a good actor. If I'm not Denzel. If I'm not Tom Hanks or Tom Cruise. What? So if I'm not Mary Street or Viola Davis, I'm not any good? Come on now. It takes all that. Everybody can't be the lead.

7:26Joe Johnson:Got to play your role, baby. Got to play it to the team.

7:28Shannon Sharpe:How many movies you seen? Tom Hanks, Denzel, Samuel Jackson, all of them in the same, and Tom Cruise in the same movie. The same reason why you don't see four big leads win a championship. That's exactly why. Yeah. Yeah.

7:46Joe Johnson:Yeah.

7:51Everybody can't lead, and it's okay.

7:53Shannon Sharpe:it doesn't make you any less of a player and now he ain't lead what everybody didn't lead on Magic Team everybody didn't lead on Shaq and Kobe everybody didn't lead with Bird right so I guess Mikael was chopped liver Paris was chopped liver DJ was chopped liver Nate Archibald was terrible so what about Bob McAdoo what about Jamal Wills they served no role

8:26Shannon Sharpe:Come on off a historic championship run. Vegas gives the Knicks the fourth best odds to complete the two-peat. The Spurs have the best odds, followed by the Thunder, the Celtics, then the Knicks. I'm not surprised by this. It doesn't happen very often. A team that win the championship, because guess what? I don't think Seattle the favorite. Seattle in football. because we won the championship in 97 and we came back the Packers were favored we just beat the Packers how we not favored to repeat

9:08see that Ocho

9:10Shannon Sharpe:Seahawks are four Rams, Bills, Ravens, Seahawks

9:20Joe Johnson:they feel like these teams had historic runs bro you know what I mean and that don't necessarily mean that they were the best team at that time you know football look different yeah even though Cincinnati gonna win it all but I got you oh man here we go I'm surprised they didn't even mention them.

9:46Shannon Sharpe:I'm not.

9:50Shannon Sharpe:I'm not. We can't have that. We cannot have that. We must stop that at all costs. Oh, man. Do you hear me? The Bengals. Y 'all got the 14th best odds, though, Ocho.

10:04Joe Johnson:Yeah, I could have told you that. Whoa, whoa, whoa. What my cowboy is at? Behind. Behind. Oh, man. Hey, Joe, do you understand why y 'all behind? Do you see how we improved defensively? Now, I know, listen, we ain't been on the field yet. We ain't been on the field, just, you know, a bunch of good names on paper, a bunch of nice veterans, you know, who got a nice presence based on the team they came from. But, I mean, we made tremendous improvement, something y 'all haven't done defensively. Yes, we have. We filled some holes. Which hole? We fill some holes defensively that's going to help improve our defense.

10:44Joe Johnson:Ocho, we were them dead last in defense last year. I'll do that again this year, too. Nah, nah. Come on.

10:51Shannon Sharpe:Come on, man. Come on. Come on, man. Ocho working on some material for you guys. I'm saying. I want you guys to do well, Joe.

11:02Joe Johnson:Now you don't. Hey, Joe, offensively, CD and Pitt, They're going to do their thing. I call them the triangle, the triangle offense. They're going to do their thing now with Dak. Okay. All right. But that normally happens because you're going to lose some players,

11:26Shannon Sharpe:players that contributed heavily. You heard Jim Dolan says he's not going into that second apron, which means it's going to probably be hard to bring some of those guys back like a Shamit, maybe a Mitchell Robinson. so you know so the team is going to be different the team will the team that won the championship will be very different than the team uh the team to defend the championship and that's why every time that i spoke the night before the super bowl i would always tell the guys i said cut the light on because the light would be dim i said cut the light on i said look

11:58Joe Johnson:around it'll never be like this again guys that are in this room right now

12:05Shannon Sharpe:unfortunately we all won't be back here next year coaches that are in this room unfortunately will not be back here next year seize this moment seize this opportunity because it's never ever going to be like this again

12:24Shannon Sharpe:we don't need anybody in this room to be the reason why we won but don't you be the reason why we didn't win that's a good one

12:38Shannon Sharpe:and I think that's the that's the the hard part because you know you develop a friendship Joe and Ocho you know we played this game a long time you see guys three four five years and all of a sudden they ain't back like damn man I miss old boy man the dude but of the bug man man you been with Ocho man you remember Ocho came here with that raggedy car man man you remember Ocho man went on a trip Man, I said, man, what you got on, man? Yeah. Man, Joe came out there dressed like he was straight out of Arkansas. Man, I pissed him, man.

13:09Joe Johnson:I pissed Joe, man. That's how it was with TJ, huh? Yes. Hey, Joe, me and TJ played at Oregon State together. Then we got drafted to Cincinnati. Man, then he left me, man, and went to Seattle, man. I was mad, man. It's tough. Hey, hey, that's the biggest thing you miss in professional sports when you're done playing. man, that camaraderie that you have with your teammates, bro, them bus rides, them planes, them flights, bro, there's nothing better than that. Never be like that again, Joe.

13:38Shannon Sharpe:When are we ever going to be around 50, 60 teammates?

13:44Joe Johnson:You can't replicate it, huh?

13:46Shannon Sharpe:You can't.

13:46Joe Johnson:You can't replicate it. You cannot. You can't. You can't. The card games, all that, man. Come on, bro.

13:54Shannon Sharpe:Come on, bro. What days, boy? That's what you miss. You do, man. Look, the money was great. I ain't going to tell nobody the money wasn't great. The money is even more astronomical now. But the money is the, like Joe said, that locker room, it's the stretching on the practice field, it's the walking to the practice field, it's the bus rides to and from the game, it's the plane ride to and from where you were going, the bus ride to the hotel. Man, what bus, Sharp? Man, Sharp, what bus you on? Man, you know a bus on my own, Bus 2. Hey, if you got on something nice, you want to get on Bus 2. If you got on some bulljive, get Bus 1 or Bus 3.

14:37Shannon Sharpe:Right. Because we going to cut your ass up.

14:40Joe Johnson:Well, they let you have it, boy, on that bus, boy. Did we?

14:43Shannon Sharpe:Hey, no mercy. I mean, they had some of the coaches like, man, hey, I want to laugh, too. They get on Bus 2. They normally, you know, coaches normally ride Bus 1. Right. They get on Bus 2. Man, we want to laugh. We already know you going to cut up. Absolutely. Yeah. That's why, look, I wanted to win. Look, the work of practice, the week of practice that we had, all the work that you put in the offseason, but I just be wanting to clown. Right.

15:13Joe Johnson:Hey, hey, hey, and it's hard to do that getting your butt kicked. Oh, ain't nobody. No, no, no, no.

15:16Shannon Sharpe:Ain't no talking joke. Oh, no. Oh, no. That thing, hey. It's silent. Boy, you can hear a rat peeing on cotton. Ain't no kiki kid. ain't no A. Lacking about what?

15:29Joe Johnson:Hey, boy, I'm telling you. Them damn losses be a character, boy. Tough, man. Hey, we. Losing up, Joe, man. It be a callous, boy. Hey, how many winning seasons I had? One? One or two. Hold on.

15:48Shannon Sharpe:I won in three years. In three years, I won 39 games and two Super Bowls.

15:54Joe Johnson:Damn. Joe, it was rough on me over there, Joe.

15:58Shannon Sharpe:With 13-3, 12-4, 14-2. Damn. It was rough. But you know what? It's just as easy to win two, three in a row as it is to lose two, three in a row. The margin of victory is so small.

16:17Joe Johnson:Oh, it's so small. So small. So thin.

16:19Shannon Sharpe:And the problem is that when you win, especially when you win a championship, you get people wanting to be more and more involved. They're the reason why. They want to do a little bit more when that's not required.

16:32Joe Johnson:Right.

16:35Shannon Sharpe:And so that's the thing is that you ever notice like, Ocho, when you have success, everybody want to be a part of your success? But when things ain't going bad, where they at? Nowhere to be found. I got a quote. I got a quote. I kept it, Ocho and Joe. It says success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan. You see, when you're successful, how many people want to be a part of that? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But when you lose, you're an orphan. You're by yourself. Don't nobody want to take responsibility with you. You notice that? That thing stuck with me. Success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan.

17:23Shannon Sharpe:that's a good one

17:27Shannon Sharpe:everybody man I used to put I put diapers on Joe man I used to take that boy to the store he didn't have no ride to the game I gave him a ride to the game

17:37Joe Johnson:right I bought that boy's first pair of tennis shoes yeah yeah

17:45Shannon Sharpe:man I knew that boy was going to be nothing man that boy I knew it would be nothing.

17:54Joe Johnson:Yeah. Man, that's it, boy. Damn. Look at Joe. You try to remember that, Hoge. Hey. That's how it go. Hey, I done been there now. Yes. I done been there. The highest of the high and the lowest of the lows, boy.

18:12Shannon Sharpe:But, hey. Yeah. When you riding, it's like you're born at Portis and say, boy, when you got too many riders and not enough fixers. He said, everybody your friend when you riding, but let that car break down.

18:26Shannon Sharpe:Come time to put the gas in. Need a spark plug, distributor cap, voltage regulator. You need something. Man, you know, Chad, boy, you caught me at a bad time. We were just riding. So we were riding. It was a good time. Gotcha. Gotcha. you. You learn a lot. You'll learn a lot. And that's what you got to be careful because everybody that's cheering ain't for you. Hey.

18:59Joe Johnson:I got to write that down. For long. I got to put that in my notes.

19:05Shannon Sharpe:I had to. But you know what? A lived experience is still the best teacher.

19:14Joe Johnson:How you say it? Everybody what? everybody that's cheering ain't cheering for you that's a good one

19:27Shannon Sharpe:yeah let me say that let me use that on Twitter tomorrow boy you have to sometimes you just have to go through things and find out for yourself

19:35Joe Johnson:yep absolutely

19:37Shannon Sharpe:if you didn't go through it you would have never known it you would have gone 10, 15, 20 years thinking but that's my boy Copenhagen spit-free pouches are packed full of American-grown tobacco. Made for welders. Stuck behind masks. More mechanics. Stuck on a fused spark plug. The long-haul trucker is stuck in gridlock. Performing. Working late at the field office. 22:55Joe Johnson:I know what you mean, boy.

22:58Shannon Sharpe:Max Kellerman said on the Game Over podcast, if you take SGA off the Thunder and replace it with Jalen Brunson, the Thunder beat the Spurs. Joe, do you agree?

23:10Joe Johnson:No, I don't. I don't agree. I think the Thunder ran into the mishaps of the Spurs because they weren't totally healthy. We know that. Jalen Williams wasn't healthy. A.J. Mitchell got hurt in what, the second game? Uncle Ocho. You know what I mean? So, you know, you lose two of your bucket getters against a Spurs team like that. Yeah, you're going to be hurting, bro. I just think they wasn't healthy, which is probably why, you know, they weren't able to advance to the finals. I don't believe that, though.

23:48Shannon Sharpe:What you thinking? What you thinking, Ocho?

23:51Joe Johnson:I mean, Jalen Brunson is awesome as he is, but obviously the injuries play the huge toll. The injuries play the huge toll. I mean, we know that. They run at full strength, so it's hard to say. I think in certain, Jalen Brunson in that place, I think they still do just as well. But you talk about two different players, two different playing styles. Both can get their shots off. They can score. So I think that really doesn't change much from a scoring perspective. Yeah.

24:25Shannon Sharpe:What you think, huh? It's just hard to say. Because every clutch moment that they needed, they got it from Brunson. And if you look at it, with the exception of – and Brunson didn't shoot the best, but when his best was required, they got it. Boy. They didn't always get that from Shea. Yeah. Every game that when Jalen Brunson, he might have been shooting terrible. He might be five for 22. He going to end up eight for 25 because he going to go three for three when he absolutely got to have it.

25:02Joe Johnson:Yeah. Yeah. Well, I think what you have is considering the fact that OKC can't spread the floor like the Knicks can because Hardenstein can't shoot. He's a hard-working, utility guy, hustle player, as opposed to Cat, who Wimby has to pay attention to, has to stick to. It's a huge difference. He can't just roam, play that free safety to where he can help everybody like he did in the OKC series. You know what I mean? Cat makes him have to stay honest because he can shoot it. Yeah, Cat won the first two damn games.

25:38Shannon Sharpe:And if you think about it, Joe, everybody for the Knicks that they were counting on played great. Now, they might didn't all play great at the same time.

25:46Joe Johnson:Same time, yeah.

25:47Shannon Sharpe:But like you said, Cat. And then you get Mikael Bridges and you get a Josh Hart. And then you get OG playing consistent with the exception of the last game. And then you get Jalen Brunson. He's like, okay, I'll take it from here.

26:00Joe Johnson:Yep. Yep. Complete team, bro.

26:04Shannon Sharpe:Complete team. You get Landry Shammott playing extremely well. Mitchell Robinson giving you big rebound, big second chance opportunities. is none bigger than the game five when he had back pushed uh wimby up on it got the rebound and kicked it out and they had to foul yep yep look uh caruso played unbelievable case and wallace played unbelievable but i didn't get that consistency from chet lou dork

26:33Joe Johnson:he didn't give you nothing on they gotta figure it out man okc got they they gotta make some room anyway over there. That team is going to look a lot different.

26:44Shannon Sharpe:I think so, too. It's going to look a lot different.

26:52Joe Johnson:Oh, yeah. You know who else is going to look different? The here. Oh, Lord. I hope y 'all get Ja, bro. Huh? I hope y 'all get Ja. I ain't have Ja and Giannis. Rob Markman No, that ain't going to happen. Rob Markman And Joe, it's a whole lot of riffraff going on with certain outlets. Talk about Giannis the Boston and Giannis here and Giannis there. Man, but it's... Every time... I don't want to get myself in trouble, but you know where he going. I don't want to say no more. You know where he going. Rob Markman You got something to say? okay alright you know we probably coming out we coming out east next year though

27:48Shannon Sharpe:Pat Bev joined the Reese's advice and said he's taking Jalen Brunson over Allen Iverson we got a video who said that? Pat Bev, remember he said he's taking James Harden over Dwayne Wade

28:09Joe Johnson:P-Bell my mans, bro. But I'm not sure if I'm taking Brunson over AI. He's saying that simply because he won the championship. Yes. And he knows it weighs heavy too by him saying that. Yeah, he's got some weight to it. Brunson in the conversation now. He done, hey. He showed me a lot this postseason. Yeah, he showed me a lot. But, I mean, I tell you what.

28:41Shannon Sharpe:You think Brunson team, the Knicks, beating Shaq and Kobe? Because that's what Adam Labyrinth was up against.

28:47Joe Johnson:Hell nah. Nah, nah. They only lost two games that whole playoff run, and one of them was to AI.

28:55Shannon Sharpe:Lord have mercy.

28:56Joe Johnson:Yeah. Yeah.

28:59Shannon Sharpe:I think when it's all said and done, we'll see where it goes. but we got, like I said, now Joe, rings are everything. Ring is everything.

29:12Yeah.

29:14Shannon Sharpe:I mean, I think Scottie Pippen's a phenomenal player. Scottie Pippen's not better than Larry Bird. He's not better than Kevin Durant. He's not better than LeBron James. He's not. He has more rings. He's not a better basketball player than those guys. He's not.

29:28Joe Johnson:I agree with you.

29:29Shannon Sharpe:But because he has rings, and Jalen Brunson, look, Jalen Brunson could go on, he might get two or three more rings. He might get an MVP, and then we'll have to revisit this conversation. Right. But Allen Iverson was one of the top players in the league. Allen Iverson was a top five player for about three to five years, maybe more.

29:53Joe Johnson:He changed the game, bro. Hey, on and off the court, Joe. He did. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. He changed the old Joe.

30:03Shannon Sharpe:All that stuff that you see, the cornrows, the big, like I said, you couldn't find no 5XTs. He had them.

30:09Joe Johnson:The tattoo. The tattoo. Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

30:13Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, he came with all that. He the one that David Sturgeon, nah, hell nah. I'm tired of y 'all showing up like this here. Hell to the nah.

30:22Joe Johnson:He was hard work.

30:24Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Hey, hey. That man is 530. he got on some 40 jeans.

30:30Joe Johnson:Yeah, yeah. He had to step in. Animals were running. Doing what they want to out there.

30:37Shannon Sharpe:Like I said, y 'all remember Tim Duncan showed up and got his trophy with some Bermuda shorts and some flip flops. Bad David started looking at him like, I can't believe you did this. Hey, man.

30:49Joe Johnson:It used to be so lovely back in the day when I'm speaking like 02, 03, 04. Where you could just pull up to the plane, They didn't jump right on. They didn't check you with security. They didn't help. Man, it was, boom, the bus stop right in front of the plane. You hop right on. You can wear whatever you want to wear, bro. It was the good days. Damn this.

31:11Shannon Sharpe:I like it. I like to see the guys dressed up. I like to see the guys coming down. Now it's a fashion show. Now they're in Paris. Everybody coming to the plane. Everybody going to the arena. And you're talking about football, basketball, the WNBA. Everybody is a part of this now. Yeah. I like it. You know, look, you're a professional. You're a professional. It's okay to be professional. Look, I ain't saying you got to spend a zillion dollars, but I'm saying you could have a nice outfit going to the jean. Yeah. I mean, excuse me, coming to the game. And look, some guys going to still wear it. Ant-Man, Ant-Man don't care.

31:47Shannon Sharpe:Ant-Man coming with sweatsuits and his Ant-Man 2s. So y 'all about to forget that.

31:57Shannon Sharpe:I like Shea and Russ and LeBron and all them guys coming wearing that stuff. I like to see Chase and Jetta and all those guys, Joe Burr and all these guys coming to the game. I love seeing the WNBA. I love Angel Reese coming to the game and Cameron Brink and Ben and all those young ladies coming in your style. Hey, show your personality. Express yourself. I like that. Yes, yes.

32:19Joe Johnson:Yeah. Hey, they got their clothes laid out like they full school on them, man.

32:24Shannon Sharpe:And them long legs, they be stepping too. You got model height, you ain't step. They be wearing heels too. I'll be coming on with it then. Hello. You right. You right. You right. Yeah, them boys are stepping back. Ocho, we got out Ocho. We ain't really, I mean, you know, I came okay. You know, had me little Gucci boots here and there. You know, had the Timbs, you know. Yeah. But I, oh, you best believe O'Shea be stepping. I'll be stepping right now though for sure.

32:53Joe Johnson:Yeah, yeah. Oh, Joe, I know you'd be cutting up right now. Oh, yeah, probably so. Probably so. Back then, I was playing a joke. Sometime with the receivers, we would, as a group, we would wear suits. If we say we come in in suits, we'll wear suits. Outside of that, Joe, I had my dickies on, Joe. They had a green pair, a gray pair, a black pair. Oh, yeah. I kept it simple, Joe.

33:18Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.

33:19Joe Johnson:Yeah.

33:20Shannon Sharpe:But, you know, look, I'm a big guy. I like saying professionals be professionals. Man, you should be, bro, stop it. Them people tell you they want you to wear a college shirt to work, you're going to show up with a college shirt. College shirt, yeah, absolutely. I don't know why people want to buck the system. If you don't want to wear that, get your own business, and you get to come like a Zuckerberg with flip-flops and shorts. That's what you want to do. That's the quickest way to have your own dress code is to own your own business. Oh, yeah. And then you get to come as you want to. Yep. But when somebody else tell you this is how they want you to dress on the job, they say khakis and whatever the case may be.

33:59Shannon Sharpe:You got to wear khakis and whatever else.

34:05Shannon Sharpe:You know what? I'm about to have a, you know what, Shay Shay meeting. We about to have a dress code. What?

34:10Joe Johnson:I bet.

34:11Shannon Sharpe:Oh, okay. Women in dresses.

34:20Shannon Sharpe:Guys in college shirts. button down.

34:23Joe Johnson:Yeah. Yeah.

34:24Shannon Sharpe:I like it.

The aviation tycoon. Do you know a lot about him? I mean, I watch The Aviator, so I know everything Leonardo DiCaprio has allowed me to know about him.

35:55But incredible innovator. Right. She says he's a, quote, very strange man. But they do get along really well. Give us examples. I know. They do get along intellectually. And in fact, she helps him design a faster plane. She takes a look at what he's designed. It's got these square wings and she's like, that doesn't make sense. And so she finds the fastest bird and the fastest fish and sketches out a drawing of like what the two would look like as a plane. And that becomes the plane that we know today. And he calls her a genius. Check out our new episode spotlighting groundbreaking innovators like Hedy Lamarr and Billie Jean King.

37:06I turned off news altogether. I hate to say it, but I don't trust much of anything. It's the rage bait. It feels like it's trying to divide people. If we got clear facts, maybe we can calm down a little. NBC News brings you clear reporting. Let's meet at the facts. Let's move forward from there. NBC News, reporting for America. What are you thinking?

37:37Shannon Sharpe:You want to get dressed up too? What you going to be for? Yeah, you too. The next segment is presented by Netflix. Make sure y 'all check out Little Brother, June 26th. That's my birthday only on Netflix. Being a little brother myself, there's a few things that's important. You look, Ocho, you older than Chauncey? Yeah, yeah, yeah. You the big brother. And Joe, you don't have any siblings, so I guess I'm the only little. Y 'all my little brother now, but. Not 800. It's three of us now.

38:06Joe Johnson:Oh, you got... I thought it was just Chauncey. No, no. Me, Chauncey, and, you know, my pop was Rolling Stone. I got my brother and my sister, Sam. My brother Sam. They younger than you? No, Sam. Sam a little older than me. Sam got me by about two years. So you are a little younger than a little brother. Yeah, I'm in the middle. I'm in the middle. Hey, hey, if that's the case, you know, I got two sisters on my dad's side, Tameka and Ashley. Tameka older than me. Okay. Yeah, she just... She actually just turned 50. Okay.

38:35Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, man, you look. Growing up, it was just like, my sister's eight years older than me. She's five years older than my brother. So by the time I got of any age, my sister was dating. So it was basically me and my brother. And we did everything together. We were close. Now, don't get me wrong now. We were close, but we fought like cats and dogs. As soon as Granny and Papa leave, I'm trying to bust him over. I'm trying to hit him as hard as God would let me with a stick. I ain't finna tell you, he'll tell you I got cut wounds and pick for picks and oh yeah I tried to get him yeah

39:14Joe Johnson:what's up with that man I got cousins man who used to fight like they ain't even know each other yes Joe I ain't never fought with brothers

39:24Shannon Sharpe:you lying to me I used to try to fight I picked that broom up and bust up man please

39:31Joe Johnson:how old were you then You know? Like where y 'all used to go at it. You had to be like young, real, real young.

39:37Shannon Sharpe:Until my brother got to like a senior in high school, probably, I probably, he was probably a junior, and I was in the eighth grade. Okay. But I was still, my sister, probably when, probably until she got by 20.

39:58Shannon Sharpe:I tussled with my aunts too. With your aunts? What? Bad please

40:07Joe Johnson:Uncle was a little delinquent Wasn't a man Uncle going through it I ain't never had no Joe you had a fight You had a fight with your brother or sister You ain't had no brothers huh Nah But I used to I done seen my cousins fight my uncles I done seen that Yeah Fish fight like out in the yard Like two dudes who don't even know each other

40:32Shannon Sharpe:I was like, damn. Yeah, hey, man, I hit my aunt one time, man. She threw me down and held me down in the ant bed. In the ant bed? Oh, man. Man, they tore me up, Jocho. But now my brother, look, we fought like that, Jo and Ocho, but couldn't nobody else bother me. But my sister gets crap now. So, you know, like, when I first started going to school, my aunts were still in school. And my sister. So I was, my sister's eight years older than me. So by the time I'm in the fourth grade, my sister's a senior. My brother's in the seventh grade. So like kindergarten and first grade, I still got aunts and still in school.

41:12Shannon Sharpe:So, you know, we sit, see, back then it was different. The white side at the back of the bus, we side at the front of the bus. And so I'd have a seat by myself. Like Gladys and, and, and, and Gladys and Maranel would sit together. Jane and Shumberdine would sit together. And Libby and Spanker would sit together. O'Shea had a seat by himself. Had me laid down. Can I sit with you? Keep it moving. Keep it moving. But my brother, look. And everybody know the story how hard we had it coming up. But this is when I knew my brother loved me and there was a different kind. My brother never told me he loved me.

42:01Shannon Sharpe:One Saturday morning, guys, we got down there, you know, and Granny didn't have no money that week. So, hey, she wasn't able to get no milk on Friday. So we only had enough. I only had milk for one bowl of cereal. And my brother got down there first. My brother ate the cereal, but he didn't drink the milk. So I was able to come down, pour the cornflakes on that and have cereal also. That's when it really dawned on me that my brother loved me. Yes. Yeah. And we were, like I said, we were close, and we didn't really talk about it. I mean, we didn't really talk. We talked a little bit about girls, but it was always and always centered around, man, what you going to do when you get older, man?

42:47Shannon Sharpe:I just want to, man, I want a house with some running water. I want a house that have air conditioning. I ain't know nothing about no central heating and cooling. I just thought all the air condition was like those window units because that's what we saw, the window units. We saw had those in school. Everybody that I knew that had an air condition, it wasn't no central heating and cooling. You had a window unit. Right. And so. Absolutely. That's what I wanted. Get granny, you know, a house that, you know, we didn't have to drink well water. My great grandma had one of those prime pumps like you see on Little House in the Perry.

43:17Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. That you pour the water down there and prime it. Yes. Yes. And the water come up from the bottom. Man. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, Joe. and so that's and me and my brother like we were really really close but we fought like cats and die man look here Joe I'm telling you boy but I wouldn't change anything about I wouldn't change anything about my upbringing because that made me who I am that made me more appreciative of who I am and to have a brother like that we looked out for one another if I had he had If he had, I had, and that's how we are today. And I remember when he got drafted, he was the seventh pick in the first round in 88.

44:06And he was off.

44:07Shannon Sharpe:And I remember when I got drafted, because back then the draft started on Sunday. So the draft was Sunday, and it goes into Monday. And I remember him when I didn't get drafted that Sunday night, he came in and said, man, we're going to be good. He said, man, we're going to be great. because that was the first year he had first team all pro, made the Pro Bowl, led the league in receiving. So, like, hey, bro, I'm about to sign this new contract. Hey, we straight. You ain't got to worry about nothing. I just got a chance. I just want to – I said, man, them guys, man, the guys that they picking, Spank, they not better than me.

44:39Shannon Sharpe:I saw them. I went to the Blue-Grey game. I went to the East-West Shrine game. Spank, I saw them at the combine. I said, Spank, they not better than me. I said, all I need is a chance. He said, hey, bro, you going to get your chance. But, hey, if it don't work out, don't even worry about it. I got you. Man, please.

44:59Shannon Sharpe:It's going to work out. It's going to work out. Yeah, get your – And the thing was, yo, see, I – and my brother was three years older than me, so I got all this hand-me-down clothes. Yeah. So it was straight. And, you know, we had clothes. You know, you couldn't wear them clothes that you wore to school. You got to come up out of them. Oh, yeah. You got to get them play-play clothes. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah. So that's how that was. And, man, please. Yeah, take them good shoes off. Go put them play shoes on.

45:28Joe Johnson:Hey, I remember the, hey, what grandma ain't play about that joke?

45:35Shannon Sharpe:But I wouldn't trade anything for my brother because I'm who I am. He believed in me. I mean, every track, when track and field would come, he would come down, we'd go to the state track, He get on the bus, ride the state track and field competition with us. He tell me, like, look, this is what we got to do. We got to save our legs. You know you got the long jump. You got the triple jump. You got to throw the disc. You got to qualify for the relays. So we can't be expending a whole lot of energy. You got to end the triple jump. You got to end it on the first jump. So it's got to be the best jump.

46:08Shannon Sharpe:So you got to be perfect. It's just stuff like that. Because, like I said, he was more like a father. because like I said, my father died when I was 13, but I only saw him once to really know who I was looking at. My grandfather died when I was eight. So he was really the dominant male figure, and my grandfather had already told him what he needed to do if something ever happened to me. You make sure you take care of that boy. He's looking at everything you do. He's listening to everything you say. You make sure. So I was his responsibility. I was his responsibility. and he never talked back to granny, you know me.

46:48Shannon Sharpe:I can't always say that. Hey, he talking back to granny? Man, man, that's bad granny stage slapping my face.

46:59Joe Johnson:I was too scared to do that, boy.

47:02Shannon Sharpe:Bad granny stage. Me too. But you know what? It was like, I was like, I would suck my teeth.

47:10Joe Johnson:Yeah.

47:11Shannon Sharpe:Hey, I get you something.

47:12Joe Johnson:They ain't play that.

47:13Shannon Sharpe:No, what? They don't play that.

47:15Joe Johnson:Yeah, they don't play that.

47:16Shannon Sharpe:You know what? I don't know what, like when you a kid, you don't realize how close or somebody far away from you. So I be done dead and she be done. What?

47:27Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe, hey, grandma hit you quick when you got something stuck in your teeth?

47:32Shannon Sharpe:Right, right, right. Man, you don't know how many times. Man, I can't wait to get grown. I can't wait to not get grown. I'm going to leave. I ain't never coming back. You can leave right now. if you want to.

47:47Shannon Sharpe:Oh, man.

47:48Joe Johnson:Boy, them some good days, bro.

47:51Shannon Sharpe:Hey, man. And then, you know, and then one day, I don't know what it was on y 'all. I don't know why. Man, look here. I done cut him. He done cut me. I done stuck him in the leg with the pick fork. He took the pick fork out, stick me back in the leg with it. Man, we done did all kind of stuff. I done bust him upside the head. He bust me back upside the head. And guess what, Joe? we right back outside playing tomorrow

48:16yeah

48:19Shannon Sharpe:you better not hurt that boy yeah but uh it take like I said my grandma say every time my brother would do something to make me make me cry she'd say son it take all that to make a man nah beat him I'm telling you this because I want you to beat him I ain't trying to be no man right now beat him
