In short
Basketball offseason talk and predictions, plus a football coaching interview. The hosts debate Jonathan Kuminga’s decision to sign with the Minnesota Timberwolves (instead of the Lakers), discuss early-season matchups (including Minnesota opening at Miami), and speculate on Steph Curry staying with the Golden State Warriors. They also interview South Carolina State head football coach Chennis Berry about his program’s process, recruiting, and culture.
Guests (and backgrounds)
- Chennis Berry: Head football coach at South Carolina State University (Savannah State alum). Previously coached at Benedict (noted as a dominant run in the SIAC) and earlier at Savannah State (Bill Davis era referenced).
- No other formal guest; the rest is host commentary.
Key claims
- Kuminga chose Minnesota for a clearer role and defensive fit; Lakers’ environment/expectations and roster fit could be distracting.
- Minnesota’s defense and defensive specialists (LaMelo as a “pass-first” guard; Ant Edwards as a “dog” at the 2) make them a better situation than LA.
- Steph Curry “for life” with Golden State; hosts argue he’s unlikely to sign elsewhere and should stay to chase another ring.
Notable examples
- Minnesota’s season opener at Miami (Heat) and a matchup framing around “Greek Freak” (Giannis) and defensive stoppers.
- Berry’s “love them harder than you coach them hard” approach; “A’s and B’s in the classroom, C’s are championships, D’s are degrees.”
- Berry’s recruiting blend: 52 returners and 52 newcomers; 21 transfers among newcomers.

2:41Shannon Sharpe:Yo, Jonathan Kaminga talked to The Athletic about choosing Minnesota over the Lakers. not to come off as disrespectful, but I didn't feel like Los Angeles was the right environment for me. There's a level of expectations outside noise surrounding the Lakers that can become distracting, and I wanted a situation where I could stay focused on basketball and my development. I felt Minnesota offered a better defensive fit and a clearer role for me. Ultimately, it was a better situation. You like how the young man talking?
3:07Chad Johnson:I do. I think he was honest and direct, Ocho. You got to take into the fact that, you know, if Kaminka goes to LA, you know, is he starting? I'm not sure. Maybe so. But you got Luke and AR who he's going to have to be behind. And those guys, as far as defense, we've talked about them pretty much throughout the whole entire season. You know what I'm saying, Ocho? As far as we know defensively, they're not going to be able to stop anybody. Now, when you look at Minnesota, he probably put himself in a situation where he was like, man, look, I go to Minnesota. They already got a couple defensive specialists.
3:44Chad Johnson:They got a pass first point guard in LaMelo, and they got a dog at the two in Ant Elwoods. You know, yeah, I want to contribute. I want to be a great piece to this puzzle, and I think that's kind of where he looked at. I think he looks like Minnesota will be a much better team than probably the Lakers will be. So him going to Minnesota is going to be great. I like how he spoke. I like how he was direct, and he betting on himself, bro. It's going to be a hell of a year. Minnesota gonna make some noise bro They got the pieces Ocho They got the pieces bro I tell you one thing I know what he's not gonna make no noise Open at night Why you say that?
4:24Chad Johnson:They play the heat open at night? Yes they play the heat open at night Guess who's gonna be caught side with his feet on the wood What? Huh? Ocho, Ocho Guess who's gonna be caught side with his feet on the wood Stop playing bro Ocho, Ocho you might say Hey I'm gonna be like Spike Lee I'm going to be in LaMelo and Anthony Edwards' head before the game even started, boy. You hear me? Ocho. Ocho, pipe down, Turbo. I'm telling you. Pipe down. They coming down to South Beach. They coming to Miami. And them boys still got some unfinished business down there in Minnesota. What? The unfinished business ain't going to start at the Kaseya Center.
4:59That's what's not going to happen. You hear me? Do you understand? Do you understand? I understand how great Anthony Edwards is. I understand the Wolves in general are a good basketball team. I get that. But, boy, week one at the Castillo Center against the Heat, man, Clay don't show you why Clay is here. They ain't going to do what Bam do. Bam might score 40.
5:26Chad Johnson:No, that ain't going to happen. Let me finish. You know what's going to happen when the Greek freak coming down here. Who y 'all got to stop him? Man, they got, they got, they got. Who y 'all got to stop him? They got Daniels. They got the McDaniels kid. Daniels. Jayden Daniels. He a defensive stopper. He the one put them clamps on Murray for Denver. What you talking about? That boy don't do nothing but sit in that chair. What the hell? Him sitting in the chair ain't finna stop. Yon is coming down here, man. Drop that shoulder, man. Man, get out my way. What you talking about, man? Man, we on that.
5:59Shannon Sharpe:Who gonna stop that man? We ain't got to that yet, huh? Hey, listen Ant-Man is one of those players you don't try to stop you just try to contain him He's gonna always get his we worry about that But we don't worry about everybody else He gonna get it and man gonna get here no matter what that's what he does That's why he's one of the now. Yeah, y 'all gonna lose in if y 'all let him get here. You're gonna lose Nope No, we let him get is and we control everybody else what you talking about and Mellow Mellow gonna hit by 8 and Clay gonna hit 9
6:35Chad Johnson:nah they ain't gonna have what are you saying that's all point for point you know what I come to the conclusion Joe don't know basketball like I do that's it that's the only thing I can think about I can't wait till basketball season to get here because the one thing that y 'all did wrong is y 'all let me get invested into the game having a better understanding of not what i'm watching but being able to talk the game as well huh yeah man listen hey i'm gonna get y 'all hair boy this season boy i'm telling you you got hey you you gotta chill just chill just chill listen y 'all got a nice squad ocho i like them but i like minnesota better bro minnesota gonna be tough man they gonna be tough ocho
7:21all right hey joe you gonna piss me off go ahead get pissed off there i'm just keeping it real
7:28Chad Johnson:bro don't get mad at me go keep it real that's all we do it also we keep it real listen listen i proved you last season that you don't know hoops the way i know hoops i know you play the game i respect you seven time you know all start get all that joe but you don't know basketball the way i know basketball and i proved that last year being right all season long being right about the playoffs and you were always wrong. What's it gotta tell you, Joe? That you don't have a knowledge of the game the way I do. You don't see the game. You might play the game, but your vision, long-term, is nothing like mine.
7:58And you know how you know I'm serious, Joe? You know how you know I'm serious, Joe? I took my glasses off and I got one bad eye. I see. That's how you know I ain't bulljive. I see.
8:08Shannon Sharpe:The eye murky, Joe. Hey, oh, oh, oh. Oh, you know. Can you see it? Man, I thought it was overcast outside.
8:16Chad Johnson:hey hey yeah i can see you know i got my game plan just keep circling to my left which is to his right yeah if i keep circling when we when we i'm circling with the eye with the eye he can't see he gonna see me if i circle to his right that man he can't see nothing coming out from oh joe listen you have to understand i've been like this all my life all my life i played like this joe i played like this so actually playing with you on the basketball court i'm still gonna get buckets regardless. And that's the problem. You ain't played against me, partner. You started talking about I played at this ball.
8:48Chad Johnson:Well, you ain't played against me. I don't know what you think this is, boy. Joe, Joe, Joe, with all due respect to your career at Arkansas, with all due respect to your NBA career, you're not beating me in basketball, Joe. And I say that with all due respect. I'm grandma Cookies. Don't do that. Don't do that. Grandma Cookies, Joe, you're not beating me, Joe. Huh? Joe, I put that on my bad eye. You're not beating me. What a bedline, eh? I got some money I want to put on my damn self. That's what I want to do. Yeah. What? Are you kidding me? On the little shooting thing we're going to do at the end of the week?
9:29Chad Johnson:Boy, I'm putting money on myself. Yo, whatever you do, don't piss me off, Joe. I'm telling you that. I want you pissed off. I want you pissed off because I want you at your best. I want you at your best, partner. Joe I got a smile on my face I'm being cordial you don't know basketball The way I know basketball and this is you That's y 'all fault y 'all created Y 'all created the monster that I am now Where I understand the game where I play the game I've been training as if I'm preparing For the NBA season even though I'm not playing Just to trash you You might want to slow down a little bit Turbo
10:04Shannon Sharpe:But I look I like what he had to say he's like look man The noise can become deafening. The last thing I want to have to deal with is that noise in Los Angeles because we know it looks. That's the Lakers. I don't care what type of team they got. Them fans, they care about winning. They don't care who they put out there. They want to win. And they want championships. And so he's like, man, in order for me to get to where I want to be, I can't be worried about, oh, y 'all lost, you suck, and all this and all that. I want to go out there and I want to be able to focus on my game. You know, we had a good deal.
10:36Shannon Sharpe:You know, Jay McDaniels, outstanding defender. Rudy Gobert, outstanding paint defender. Myself, an outstanding paint defender. And they defined a role. What was my role going to be in L.A.? Right. Scraps? Are you going to put me to dunk a spot? I mean, how many times y 'all going to allow me to shoot? Because we know, look, the bulk of the shots, Luka's going to take about 22 a game. AR going to take somewhere between 15 and 18.
11:03Chad Johnson:And Kessler, Walker Kessler here, who just signed their big deal. He ain't come over there to put up no two, three shots a night, so you know that he gotta get his touches.
11:12Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Yeah, and you know, he gonna be in the dunking fight. He the lob, Brett.
11:16Chad Johnson:Hey, hey, he felt, he felt, you know, Jonathan Dominguez felt going to LA, okay, Ocho, he probably gonna be getting about four to six shots a night. I'm just keeping real. Yeah. He would've come off the bench too, huh? I don't know if he would've came off the bench. It's just hard when you play in that system. You're going to have to be a catch-and-shoot guy because Luka is going to have the ball a lot and AR is going to have the ball a lot. So when the ball do find you, more than likely it's going to be catch-and-shoot. It's going to be swing, swing, or you're going to be in that corner. They find you in that corner, but you're going to be a catch-and-shoot player.
11:53Chad Johnson:You got to make them shots. Yeah, you got to make them shots.
11:57Shannon Sharpe:And a lot of times, guess what? Luka is going to be passing the ball. He done got caught up. Hey, three seconds on the clock. Two, one. Now you heave it up that, now your shooting percentage in the toilet. In the toilet. Everybody talk about, man, look at Kamingo. Kamingo shooting 42%.
12:13Chad Johnson:Hey, guys, I'll come to you too, Uncle Ocho. Hey, man, halftime. Dude will come to you. Hey, man, don't be throwing me them damn firecrackers, man, to where as soon as they hit my hand, I got to get it out of my hand. They mess up my percentage. Guys, don't play about that, boy. You throwing them that ball, it's a hot potato, man. I got to hear him shoot this bomb, this grenade, man, please.
12:34Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, and that's just the way it is. I mean, but you play with Luka, you play with AR. They didn't pay AR that money to all of a sudden go into a shell. They want him to expand his role. Yes, sir.
12:47Chad Johnson:I think he picked it.
12:49Shannon Sharpe:And deservingly so, I don't have no problem because I saw how the guy, what he came in as and what he built himself up into, he absolutely deserved. He absolutely deserved what he got. He absolutely deserved to have more on his plate because he's having it. He's done it. I know he didn't play well this past postseason, especially against OKC.
13:15Chad Johnson:But the development, the development that he's went through in the process over the past some odd years, he's gotten better each and every year. And he's shown and proven that, man, he can help tote, you know, their scoring load throughout the regular season. I think they are going to be great there. But I think Kaminga made the best decision. Okay, Ocho. I probably would have made that same one, too.
13:39Shannon Sharpe:Hey, we got a very special guest joining us. We got South Carolina head coach, Chenice Berry. Coach. Man, come on, Coach. How you put on 87 on your album model, man? How y 'all doing, man? Hey, listen, man. Doing good. They doing great. I ain't doing good. I ain't. Hey, man, we were just trying to go 1-0, man. You know how I know, man. Just trying to find a way to win a football game, man. That's it. Man, save some of them po - You bought a sofa you didn't have to assemble, a suit someone measured just for you, and now you're taking a guy's trip that actually matters. 17:18Great to be here.
17:19Shannon Sharpe:Yes, sir. Well, congratulations on the win. You guys did something really, really special last week. Had an outstanding ball game. You ran the football well. You didn't require a whole lot of passing yards because you ran the ball so effectively. What was it about, what was it about so effective about this game plan that you were able to get the amount of yards and the amount of points that you were able to put up? It's about execution for us, man. You know, at the end of the day, I tell our young men, And, man, let's lock and load for 60 minutes, man. I think our guys did just that. Regardless of who's in the game, there's a certain standard on how we're going to play, man.
17:52And we respect every opponent we play, man, but we fear none. And we knew when Savannah State came up in here, man, that they were going to have their team ready to go. They had a new coach, man. So with them having a new football coach, man, there's so many unknowns. You know, it's things we really don't know. So we're going in just trying to be the best at what we can do. And I thought our young men did just that, man. And I thought our coaches, they did an outstanding job of putting our young men in a position to be successful. And we found a way to accomplish the mission, man, and that's to go 1-0.
Read the full transcript
18:24Shannon Sharpe:Well, I need you to do one more favor for me. I need you to get those young men to play. I need you to get your coaches to coach them up. Because this week when you play fam, you see Ocho got his fam shirt on. Drop 62 on there.
18:38Hey, man, we're going to go out there with the right mindset, man. You know, I think, man, as you see on my shirt, man, we're all about trying to find a way to go one and over. That's it, man. Regardless of what, we respect every opponent that we play, man. But, you know, the mission doesn't change for us, man. We're going to make sure that our young men are prepared. The separation is in the preparation, and we're going to make sure they're ready to rock and roll when that ball kicks off down there in Miami, Florida. Hey, Coach, you guys are picking up the back of you guys left off last season.
19:05What message do you give your players, Coach, to make sure that they are aligned with you in a long-term role to make sure the season is successful? Man, we're process-oriented, man. We're all about falling over the process, man. Yes, sir. And, you know, our young men have really bought into that. I have a great group of guys, man. They love South Carolina State University. And they understand, man, when you – just because we were last year doesn't mean we will be this year. They understand that we have to work. In the days, how does football game with the transfer portal, man? There's so much turnover.
19:46We try to make our program still relational, not transactional. It's about relationships for us, man. Our young men know that we truly love them each and every day on how we pour into them, not just as football players, but as young men, man. And so, you know, those guys understand that. And they understand their standards here at South Carolina State University, man. South Carolina State University has been winning ballgames for a long time, man. You can go way, way back, man. Legendary football coaches like Willie Jeffries and Oliver Buddy Pugh. And my old head coach at Savannah State was Bill Davis, you know, who did some outstanding things here.
20:23So, you know, all in all, there's standards on how we're going to do things and how we're going to play and how we're going to practice. And our young men have really bought into that. But it's a new team. It's a new season, but the mission doesn't change. Find a way to go 1-0 each and every day.
20:36Chad Johnson:That's what's up. Hey, Coach Bear, I got a question for you. You brought in 41 newcomers this year, 21 of them transfers. How do you blend that many personalities into a championship locker room? Listen, man, it starts with the returning guy. So I actually have 52 returners and 52 newcomers. and when you have 52 guys, the foundation is already set from the guys that's been here. They're hungry and hungry. People are asking, well, how does it feel to chase another championship? Well, we're not really looking at it like that. We're looking at this a whole new team, man. So a lot of the 52 guys that weren't here last year, they're not chasing anything.
21:20I mean, at the end of the day, they're not trying to, the word I'm looking for is they're not trying to reestablish anything because they haven't done anything yet. So at the end of the day, we make sure that the young men that have been in the program do a good job of letting the guys know the standards on how we do things. And in this program, man, we're about championships, man. We chase A's and B's in the classroom. C's are championships and D's are degrees. Those are the A's, B's, C's, D's of our program.
21:51Shannon Sharpe:I like that. I like that. Coach, your last two years in the SIC at Benedict, you didn't lose a game. You started out two years here in South Carolina State. You haven't lost a game. How do you keep that? How do you make sure your players, because like you said, you're bringing in 52 new guys. Those guys haven't done. So each season is really a season in and of itself. You can't say, well, we did it last year. We're going to do it this year. Or he did this. He's going to do that. How are you able to stay so laser focused, get your team to follow your lead, and do what you've been able to do in the last four years?
22:26I've been blessed, first of all, man. I'm a man of faith, man. God leads me, guides me, and direct me, man. But I got great coaches, man. You know, you got to have, in order to have success, people think about winning on the field, but you got to have great alignment. And it starts with great alignment from our administration. I have an outstanding president, President Conyers, and I have an outstanding athletic director, Oliver Buddy Pugh. And then I have a great coaching staff, man. And when you've got great coaches that buy into your process as well, because it all starts with buying. I don't care what kind of talent you have.
22:58If guys don't buy into what you're trying to accomplish, then you won't have the success that you want to have, man. So I think more than anything, man, we look at it as a new team, new season every year. So we're chasing something every year. What we want to chase is greatness, man. And it's been working for us, man. But we got young men, players that really buy into what we're trying to do on and off the field, man. And it's really in the last few years, it's resorted to a couple championships, man.
23:25Shannon Sharpe:You know, the last three-peat South Carolina State had was 80-83 Coach Davis, who is your coach. He was also my coach. I was his first recruiting class in 1986 at Savannah State. What did you learn from why you was playing for Coach Davis? Because he was an unbelievable man, and he shot you straight. You knew exactly where you still with Bill Davis. Of all the coaches, I've had a lot of them. I'm not so sure that I got one more that I enjoyed playing for more than I enjoyed playing for Coach Davis. You know, I got to Savannah State College at the time in 1991, man. And I share this with people all the time.
24:01Bill Davis gave me my opportunity. And, you know, I actually got my football scholarship off him watching me play in the basketball tournament. And I'm always forever grateful, humbled and grateful for a man that gave me an opportunity. So, Bill Davis, one thing you know about him, man, he would shoot you straight, just like you said. And when we came in as freshmen in 1991, man, he taught us more life than he did football, per se. And, you know, I'm grateful for the relationships we had with Bill Davis, old Brick, Darryl McNeil, man. That was another one. Yeah. Wesley McGreer, prime dog. That's my guy.
24:38We super close, man. Old Mudbone, man. So, all those guys, man, really paved the way for me, man. So I'm just grateful for the relationships. And it's all about relationships. When you work and you play at HBCUs, man, at the end of the day, man, the relationships that you build, man, they last for the rest of your life. These are guys that impact your life in so many ways, not just in the game of football, but in the game of life. I'm just grateful to have those relationships that have impacted my journey and where I stand today.
25:10Shannon Sharpe:Is A. C. Is A. C. South Carolina State with you? No, sir. No, sir. He was last year, but he's no longer here. Okay. Hey, Coach, we know the success you've had based on what you've been able to do, but I understand coaching is more than just wins and losses. I understand the journey and getting the players to align with the process that you already have. But how do you navigate being able to coach players in an era, especially with young athletes, that are really sensitive when you're critical of them? How do you get them to understand? And how are you able to coach them hard to get them to understand in order for you to want to do this and for the process to work and be aligned with what we want to do here at South Carolina State?
25:50This is the way things need to be done without them shutting down. You know what, man? I'm grateful that you asked that question. Because real talk, man, we're going to coach them hard. We're going to coach them hard. I'm talking about we're going to coach them hard. But we're going to love them harder. See, when you love them harder than you coach them, man, they'll let you coach them hard, man. They don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. And our young men genuinely know that we genuinely love them. And I have some really good ball coaches, man, but they pour into the young men.
26:22They go into the dormitory with them. They go to the cafeteria with them. They spend time with them outside the game of football. They ask them how their parents are doing. They just dig into – always tell them, get into their life. Because if you get into their life, man, And those guys will run through the wall for you. And I think if you can continue to build relationships, not transactional, you know, I get it. And young men want to be able to get a little piece of the pie because they deserve it, right? They work so hard to represent these universities. You know, they want a little piece of the pie as well.
26:50But we're going to love them. We're going to care for them. We're going to make sure that they graduate. See, one of the biggest thrills for me, I want to win championships, man, but I want to win souls. And I want to make sure that in the next, you know, people say it all the time, The next four years of your life is going to set you up for the next 40. I want to make sure that on Mother's Day, four years from now, when they enroll into South Carolina State University, when they walk across that stage, usually around Mother's Day, that now they're ready for this game we call life, man. Because the reality is, you know how I go, man.
27:20This game, football, man, it has an expiration date. Some of these guys think they're going to play forever. But we're going to teach them life lessons that's going to get them ready for this game we call life because they're going to be better fathers. They're going to be better husbands. They're going to be better leaders in this community because of the time that they had in their journey here at South Carolina State University.
27:38Chad Johnson:Hey, Coach Berry, you talk about these kids wanting a piece of the pie. Myself, Arcan Ocho, we sit here and talk about NIL. You know, we talk about how it affects the kids. When you recruit a kid today, what tells you he really loves football versus loving everything that kind of comes with it? I'll tell you what, man. Listen, that's a part of my recruiting pitch, man. At the end of the day, man, I'm going to find out everything about a kid. You know, I want to find out. Number one question I'm going to ask when they sit down with me, crossing me face to face, do you love football? Hello. Sometimes they love being recruited.
28:18Chad Johnson:Yeah. Love being recruited. I don't need a guy that loves being recruited. I need a guy that loves the game. Hello, man. Don't need a guy that's sweating tears because it's hard, man, getting up in the morning. You got to get up. You got to go to practice. You got to go to study hall. You got to go to meetings. You got to get post-haw. You out here in the sun and the heat of Orangeburg, South Carolina. You got to love this game, man. You can't just go out there and go play this game. You got to love it. That's one of the questions I ask these young men. And if they're always talking about money, that means they really don't love the game, man.
28:49Because, you know, the reality is, you know, when we came through, well, at least when I came through, you know, they give us a little scholarship, man. And three hots in the cup, we were happy. We were happy just with the opportunity because we wanted to get a degree because we didn't really have a whole lot to go back home to, you know, per se, man. So we're just, you know, here at South Carolina State University, man, I'm going to tell you, man, I'm so grateful for the work of the place like this, man, because you're talking about legends have come through here, man. We have four NFL Hall of Famers that play in the South Carolina State University.
29:22You know, we have a lot of tradition, a lot of history. we have 20 MEAC championships that host on the rafters of our Oliver C. Dawson Stadium, man. So winning games is important around here. There's an expectation on how we do things, but winning solid is probably more important than me. Yeah. Hey, I can tell you one thing, Coach. I never had the opportunity to meet you, but I've seen the success that your school has had. I've seen the success that you had before you got here. And now I get a total understanding on why y 'all are successful. like for me like i can tell you this and never meeting you personally boy it is on it's on and i'm one that always writes down quotes that that uncle shannon always shares all the time and there's something that you said when i tell you i'm gonna take this for the next 40 years and use it they don't care how much you know until they know how much you care boy that was a gem that was a gem that was a good one and to be able to say something like that as a head coach that was dope that was awesome that was awesome
30:30Coach, with all the success
30:31Shannon Sharpe:you know what happens and I know you're planted where you are my roots are here right now but you can't keep having the level of success you have without people start knocking on your door Well, you know I truly believe in bloom where you planted man, be where your feet are man, and you know I'm a man of faith So, you know, at the end of the day, all I can control is the controllables, right? So, here's what I can control. Just trying to find a way to keep going one and O. And because I'm a praying man, I let the chips fall where they may, man. And I'm going to let the good Lord lead me, guide me, and direct me.
31:04And I'm going to follow his lead, man. But, you know, I look at life sometimes like this, man. God don't make any mistakes. It's the reason why I'm here right now, today, on August the 31st, 2026, at South Carolina State University. You got to think about it, guys. I spent 26 years as an assistant coach before I got my first opportunity to be a head football coach, man. And God got me here. He got me here for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. And I'm going to enjoy the moment while I'm here and just dominate the day and keep falling in love with the process of going one and one each and every day.
31:37That's it. Well, I sure hope God leads you to Savannah State.
31:41Shannon Sharpe:That sure would be nice if he led you back. Since you follow God's lead, I sure hope he leads you down there. That would sure be nice, coach. I appreciate it, man. Coach, thank you. Man, congratulations on all the success. Like I said, all the success that you had at Benedict, the success that you're enjoying now at South Carolina State. I understand that program. That's a very, very proud program. A lot of the guys that went there that you talk about in the Hall of Fame, the Donnie Sheld, the Deacon Jones, I know those guys very well. I played against Edwin Bailey. I played against the DB that he was at Seattle.
32:14Shannon Sharpe:I forget his name off the top of my head. but it's been a privilege and it's been an honor to have you on the show tonight definitely, hey coach, matter of fact I'm going to be at that game you know, that South Carolina State and FAMU game, I got to meet you in person, I got to be able to shake your hand man because this was dope for me you know, first impressions are really said to be lasting impressions and the impression I got meeting you tonight man on the show, I got to meet you formally so if I can get your information from coach man so i can shake your hand before that game you know down here miami man it'd be an honor looking forward to yeah give him that information so because he ain't gonna shake your hand after the game when y 'all put puts him he gonna be long gone coach so go ahead you're going get your hands shaking your green your pleasantries get that out of the way early i appreciate it man thank you man coach thanks for joining us tonight we appreciate it continue your success man and We'll see you down the road.
33:11Shannon Sharpe:Thank you guys. Thank you, guys. Go with all. Go with all. That's South Carolina State head football coach, Chenice Barrett, Savannah State alum. Unfortunately, he does not coach the team now, but hey, who knows what the future holds. Never know. Never know. Hey, Unc. Boy, he would preach him, boy.
33:30Chad Johnson:Yeah. Hey, listen. Hey, Joe, he might be a coach, but you can tell he was raised in a church and he's in the church now. Yeah. I don't have my pen and paper. I'm trying to write down all the quotes please tell me somebody in the chat you got the quote about the soul it's something about the soul Joe it was so it was so good I can't remember what it was but I do remember that other one though
33:55Shannon Sharpe:hey you see how he talked about Coach Davis how Coach Davis shot you straight that's how he was no punches no punches hell he told you that if you play good he told you if you weren't playing good it wasn't oh come on so you son so I'm gonna have to take you
34:22Shannon Sharpe:he did a lot book you can tell he doesn't curse coach David it's good to
34:28Chad Johnson:have straight shooters don't like that his head coaches bro yeah yeah yeah could they tell you right where you at it ain't no no indecision you ain't none of that yeah but see the funny thing about it is coaches like coach david's uncle that's why i asked coach how do you figure out how to coach kids in today's era in today's climate with them being so goddamn sensitive that's why that's why i asked that question and his answer was oh my goodness boy hey he could run for office boy yeah but he could run for office boy oh my good that that was nice. That was delightful. I enjoyed that.
35:06Shannon Sharpe:How about this, Chad? We got a big announcement to make. We're partnering with Netflix during the first stop of our HBC tour. That's at Prairie View, PV. The cast of A Different World will be joining us live from the Baby Dome. Wow. You see it right there. Kadeem Hardison, Darryl Bell, Cornell Young, and forth. I just know the last name is Uche. Wait, wait, tell me. Yeah, you ain't hit us again. I figured you was gonna find out. Oh my God, we got to cast a different world.
35:38Chad Johnson:It's a different world. Ooh, and where you come from.
35:44Shannon Sharpe:Hey, let's say that. We wanna thank Netflix for giving us this opportunity. We are looking forward to meeting to the cast of A Different World. Chat, you guys made this possible because of the eyes, the views, the word of mouth. you guys made it possible. Man, that's what's up, bro. None of this is possible without you. That's dope, man. The love and support that you give us and show us, they see that.
36:19Shannon Sharpe:It does not go unnoticed. And when we deliver, when they say, well, can you do this? Can you do that? That team, that's team that's behind the scenes that you don't see, they make sure we get the job done. So when we come up, when you see these specialty segments, these special segments, custom segments, the team at Nightcap, Shea Shea Media, you guys do an unbelievable job. None of this is possible without you. Ocho and Joe and myself, we got an easy job. We just be us. Y 'all have the hard work to make sure to put it in a format, to make sure we're on a hit-off point, We hear the IQs and make sure we deliver the deliverables that we say we're going to give to these companies.
37:03And so thank you.
37:05Shannon Sharpe:Thank you very much. We appreciate that. PV, we're coming. We're going to be there. We're going to be there Friday night. Look forward to seeing all you guys. Can't wait. Can't wait. And again, thank you, Netflix, for making this possible.
37:18Chad Johnson:Do y 'all know how big? This is a different world, man. Yeah. Hey, Joe, I know. We're in a different world. I'm just saying
37:26Shannon Sharpe:but that's what I keep telling people everybody be trying to compete where they don't compare
37:30Chad Johnson:oh okay
37:32Shannon Sharpe:alright okay there's a reason why we doing this okay our fan base is legendary hello they show up they show up they jump in the chat and they cheer us on they motivate us absolutely they know what it is hey Crème de la crème. Best chat in the world. Best fan in the world. It ain't even close. It ain't even close.
38:01Chad Johnson:What if they ain't here for the beat coconut? What? Yeah, man. Yeah. Yeah. What you? Hey, you know them friends, bruh. Them friends gonna beat you up, bro. Huh? Them friends gonna beat you up for trying to step. You being a fake. I want to step in. I don't know what I was doing. Oh, he's doing the Ray. Oh, okay. What? Yeah.
38:30Shannon Sharpe:Let's go. Yeah, y 'all know what's up. Hey, like I said, I chat. I appreciate y 'all, baby. I chat over anybody's. This is not a, hey, congratulations, everybody that's doing big things. Congratulations, guys. Hey, you know we have some healthy banner going back and forth, but I chat. And they normally tune in at some point of the day, they catch us all, they catch what we say, what we do. Hello. And matter of fact, if any other people have a problem with our chat, our chat will fight your chat.
39:09Mm. What you wanna do? Our chat will fight your chat. What you talking about?
39:18Oh, man, different world, man. I'm so I'm so excited, man. Hey, I got I got to remain calm, though. I got to remain calm. I can't I can't be fanning out like Wednesday.
39:29Shannon Sharpe:We will announce the sororities and the fraternities that will be competing in the legendary. So Wednesday, we're going to announce the ones that will be competing. Hey, what's the prize? What's the prize, huh?
39:46Shannon Sharpe:We're all that's gonna be announced on Wednesday. Hey, let's make it about 5 ,000. Okay. Or is it more than that? Or is it more than that? We're gonna make the announcement on Wednesday. We announced the sorrows and the prats that's gonna be a part of the step show. Hey, be at your best. Y 'all better be, I hope you get practice. Hey, hey, hey. I hope you're being honest.
40:08Chad Johnson:Hey, I see why some people, y 'all can't get them the whole itinerary because they'll tell it. I see what going on. Oh, really? I ain't saying nothing, brother. I'm just saying. Hey, Joe, I ain't gonna tell about it. I know, hey, hey, hey, I wasn't talking about you. I'm just saying I see why I hugged them, you know? Hey, Joe, I'm ready for that step show, boy.
40:29Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah. And y 'all best be knowing that. Y 'all know I went to an HBCU, so I know when it's good, and I know when it's really good, and I know when it's extraordinary. So don't become half-stepping. I ain't no PWI, brother. Okay. HBCU, class of 91.
40:49Chad Johnson:Hey, I'm not going to lie. I want to know what sororities, what frats going to be performing because, hey, it's going to be a show. It's going to be a show.
41:01Shannon Sharpe:I can't wait. For sure. I can't wait. So again, thank you Netflix for allowing us to have this HBC tour. And we kick it off at PV Friday night, September the 4th. Be there. You don't want to miss this. The cast of A Different World, Kadeem Hardison, Daryl M. Bell, Cornell Young, the fourth, and Uche. They'll join us on stage live from the Baby Dome. Can't wait. And Wednesday, we'll announce the sororities and frats that will be participating in the Step Show. Hey, I got a question, right? right? If Roy is impressed, that means they got to spit the money. So the sorority wins and a fraternity wins, right?
41:40Shannon Sharpe:Yes. Oh, I think we should make it 10 apiece. We're going to announce that on Wednesday. Steph Curry says he's pretty sure he'll finish his career with the Warriors. There's no question. I want to be here the rest of my career. And I'm pretty sure that's going to happen. The deal and the contract stuff will happen at the right time, and we're not letting it be a distraction from the preparation for this season. And the fact that the team were coming back has a lot of familiarity. Hopefully we can be healthy and just have a chance to show what we're capable of, myself included, missing so many games last year.
42:15Shannon Sharpe:I don't see a scenario. I think he can sign a two-year deal for about$140-something million. You got to leave two? I don't see a scenario because once you get to a certain age, they won't let you sign no extended deal. Basically, it's two years at a time.
42:32Chad Johnson:Yeah.
42:33Shannon Sharpe:I don't see a scenario where Steph Curry put another jersey other than going to win. I could be wrong. Anything could happen. They never say never, but I just don't see that happen. I think he's a one-jersey guy. Are you sure he's a one-jersey guy, Un? I mean, in joke? Knowing that you don't have a chance, don't you want to finish your career, obviously, with the opportunity to maybe win a ring again? just to be one just say okay you know what i stayed in golden state my entire career that's a great thing it's an amazing accomplishment but if you're going to end your career why not end it
43:06Chad Johnson:on a high note who's who's to say he can't end on a high note ocho think about it he probably feel like they still you know got a chance to play championship caliber basketball anything is possible ocho injuries happen certain things happen like it's you know hey look i i can't really blame him for being in Golden State the whole entire time. Man, he's been the face of that franchise, bro. Won four championships. Come on, man. What are we talking about? Joe. Joe, you my dog, Joe. I love you to death. But see, this is where my ball knowledge comes into play in understanding things. Listen, Golden State is not prepared, nor do they have the team to compete in the West, let alone win an NBA championship.
43:51There is nothing that they can do in the foreseeable future that will have them in a position to be able to compete with the Thunder, the Spurs, let alone the Wolves. Wait, that's not the West. I'm tripping. Yeah, that's the West. That's the West. It is, but yeah, let alone the Wolves. I mean, I would think, I would hope, and they would grant, you know, Brother Curry that opportunity the same way the Browns granted Miles Garrett the opportunity to lead the game on a high note with another chance at another ring. And I'm Steph Curry. I'm the best shooter of all time. And the last two, three years of my career, I stayed here just because I wanted to wear one jersey.
44:32Maybe I'm tripping.
44:34Chad Johnson:Ocho, Ocho, all these other teams, especially the top upper echelon teams, they're already intact, bro. What are they supposed to do? I mean, you talk about the OKC's, the San Antonio's, the Minnesotas, like where he's going to go to where he's going to be able to play championship caliber basketball. Hey, Joe, you got me right there. I like what you just did. Joe, you got me. I'm stuck. Because where could he go? We could have an opportunity to win a ring. Joe, I don't know. So might as well stay put, get that bag again. You know what I mean? And do what you can to make Golden State a competitive team, bro.
45:15Chad Johnson:Like, they may not be one, two, or three. But hell, if they play good enough basketball, man, and they can be in there for sure playing, you know what I mean?
45:24Shannon Sharpe:Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. So, and you know what? At that point, and he doesn't strike me as a guy that, like, you know what? Just to go win a ring, I'm going to root up my family. He doesn't strike me as that type of guy. Okay. Okay. It could be wrong, Abe. People minds change. Yeah, yeah. People minds change. And he, of all people, is allowed to change his mind. I ain't got no problem. If he stays, if he goes, I'm happy either way. I mean, he should be content for a ring. Greatest shooter of all time. I get it. I'm just saying, if he had that urge, if he had that urge, you know what? I want one more.
46:08I want one more. Even though my legacy is cemented as one of the greatest, not just shooters of all time, one of the greatest NBA players of all time. Top 70. Yeah. And depending on who you ask, maybe top 10 of all time. It's just me. I don't know.
46:25Chad Johnson:Hey, I think Steph is more so he'll take a guy who can come join them, but he doesn't seem like a guy who's willing to go out and team up with somebody in New York or Philly or they're not. No.
46:42Shannon Sharpe:Oh. They're going to have to join him. He's not going. They'll have to join him. Hey, Joe, you just said something real nice there, Joe. What's that? Steph Curry in New York?
46:55Chad Johnson:Nah. Huh? How you going to get him there? Steph Curry in New York? Nah. No? It ain't possible, Ocho. Huh? Anything is possible. No, it's not. Did you hear Kevin Garnett say that after they won? Yeah, I know, but this ain't. Anything is possible. What you talking about? Listen, I'm just throwing hypotheticals out there. You know, I got a vision. Let me text them. Let's see what Steph ain't talking about, man. When you're teeing off and your clients are watching, it's on. 51:28Shannon Sharpe:JoJo87891, best late night chat been here since nightcap started. We got so many of those. I remember like it was yesterday, Ocho, you and I, that little 30-minute thing that we had, had about 300, 400 people in the chat. Like, damn. I said, boy, hey. And the next time, that was a Sunday night, and the next time we went, we had like 3 ,000. And then we just spread like wildfire. Hey, just cause we put a mean 87 point demonstration, that don't make us no bad brothers.
52:04Hey, they ain't scoring no 87 down here, I can tell you that, you hear me?
52:08Shannon Sharpe:Oh, okay. 67. Y 'all ain't lying about real work life. I've been working in the factory for over three years making a decent money for my age, but man, them 12-hour swing shifts suck. Yeah, man. You ain't got to tell me nothing. I wish you had an opportunity to work that job when you was younger. Could let you know. Because if you have a lot of jobs, Joe, and you work when you're younger, it lets you know what you don't want to do. That's how I am with my palate. Yeah, I ate it when I was younger, and I know I didn't like it. So now I don't have to eat it. Why would I? I mean, people are like, you eat Viena sausages.
52:49Shannon Sharpe:Yes, I like Viena sausages more than I like hot dogs. That's just me. Yeah. Man, them Viena, hey, you get a truck driver steak, which is a honey bun, Viena sausage, and a Coca-Cola? Yeah. You Gucci? Man. Joe, I put a$14 day ship in. Hey, that old truck driver steak, give me two truck driver steaks. Viena sausage, I want one of them old big cans, because you know they got big cans, and they got the most cans.
53:19Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
53:20Shannon Sharpe:You give them one of them old big cans of Viena sausages?
53:21Chad Johnson:You're going to go off.
53:23Shannon Sharpe:Man. Like a truck on Red Bull. I work all night.
53:33Shannon Sharpe:What's up, Big Three? When y 'all was watching film, what were y 'all looking for against your opponent? That's a good one.
53:39Chad Johnson:That's a good one. When I was watching film, it's more so tendencies for me. You know, you can look in basketball, you can look at an offensive set and kind of know what's coming. You know, if you watch enough film, So let's say, hell, if we play in the Lakers and we play against Kobe, he going to shoot from a lot of different places on the court. But that triangle running with Phil, all them misdirections, them cutting off, like you know when he catch it, he live, off-dump. I don't care where he catch it at. You know what I mean? So you have to be prepared. And you want to know his tendencies defensively to where he likes to gamble.
54:14Chad Johnson:Right. You know what I mean? He going to take a lot of chances. You know what I'm saying? So you want to find different ways you can go at him and make him work as well because the offensive guys in the NBA, man, if you let them rest on defense, boy, they're going to scorch you. Boy, they're going to tear you up. So for me, anytime my players score, I always try to make their ass work defensively, whether it's chasing me, whether it's coming off picks, whether it's playing in isolation, I just never want them to rest. If you take a break, you rest on your damn offensive time, not on defense, yeah.
54:46What you looking for, Ojo? I mean, for me, obviously, I think the most difficult thing for me, Uncle Joe, I'm going to be honest with you. It was playing, it was studying film when it came to my division opponents. And that was having to play against the Ravens and having to play with the Steelers because they did other things that no other teams would be able to do. When you watch film on other teams where they lined up in, it's normally what they ran. Even with the rotations, with the safeties and the linemen moving and the second level in moving, what you saw is what you get. When you play the Ravens, you play the Steelers because the personnel was so good and they really had no weaknesses at any level on defense that is what was really difficult for me and most of the time you try to look for the tendencies but the funny thing is the tendency changed when they were playing us yeah and what you saw on film most of the time it wasn't what you what you were going to get in the game so it made it very difficult because they ran so many different exotic coverages because there were certain things that they could get away with that no other team would get away with because the personnel was so much different and so much better but I mean it was it was it was so difficult for them and they they gave me a tough time.
55:50Obviously I had some success. Yes. But man, watching film on the Ravens in the early two thousands and, and having to deal with Ike Taylor and Troy Palomaro and Chris McAllister and some, man, dude, it was hell. It was. Yeah.
56:07Shannon Sharpe:I'm kind of looking for the same thing. Obviously they're going to play certain coverages and down the distance area of the field. I really didn't look at the way the guy covered a tight end because I know they didn't view me as a tight end. So I'm looking at how they covered receivers. Looking at, okay, if it's this formation, does he open up, does he like to quick jam? Does he feather? Which means, is he up there in front of me, but he ain't really trying to put his hands on me because he don't want me to grab it. He's just feathering me, following me everywhere I go. Does he bite, is he antsy, does he like to jet?
56:45Shannon Sharpe:What we call it, we call it jetting, they call it undercutting. So I'm looking at, like I said, I'm not so much just, like Joe said, tendencies. How does he play? What does he like to do? Is he a talker? Is he quiet? If I say something to him, can I get him off his game? You look at guys and you see, if somebody pushed them, how fast do they react? Or they just like, crush it off. Because it's really a game within a game. because how they cover me, they weren't going to cover anybody else the way they covered me. The way the guy covered Ocho, you know, maybe a guy wasn't going to press Ocho. Another guy, he's going to press Ocho.
57:28Shannon Sharpe:So guys didn't want to press Ocho because of his quickness off the ball. The one thing you don't want to do is try to press a guy and miss because he's gone.
57:38Shannon Sharpe:So I'm just kind of looking at him like, okay, this down the distance. I come out and look at the front. Okay. Starting the over front. Okay, now they're in the under front. Okay, they play this coverage behind it. Oh, this is what they're going to do right here. Does he hold a lot? Do I need to go to the back? Judson, man, he's doing the thing. Bro, you just watch over the holding now. I ain't got no catches. You know why I ain't got no catches? Because he's been holding.
58:14Shannon Sharpe:I'll say it again. Them ass fellas, selfish people hating while waiting for the show to start, yet won't to complain. Prosper fella, woo damn pig. There we go, woo pig.
58:27I know y 'all think it's cheap, and you know, we ain't got no studio.
58:30Shannon Sharpe:I mean, you know, we ain't got no studio like a lot of people got studios. We ain't got that. We couldn't afford no studio, so we had to get them set up that everybody could be on location. They could be in their confines of their own home, and, you know, we can shoot the show because that's what COVID showed us. COVID showed that you could do a show and people didn't have to be sitting next to each other. COVID also showed people can do their work from home and get it done and be just as productive. We feel that we can create a show. Now, guess what? Come Friday night, we're going to all be together.
59:05Shannon Sharpe:The next stop, we'll all be together. So we could do it any kind of way we wanted to do it. I just felt that this way, it was the best way for us. Ocho lived in Miami. I wasn't moving out of Miami. At the time, I was living in California. Ocho wasn't moving to California. So how do we make this work? Yeah. Yeah, it requires a lot of moving parts. Yeah, you got to have graphics. Yeah, you got to have editors. Yeah, you got to have extra producers. Yes, you got to have spotters. Yes, all that.
59:36Shannon Sharpe:Y 'all think that's cheating? No. I told you. come for the ads stay for the store i can't i can't be in no studio but i got about 350 other jobs exactly exactly because at the time i had i had uh i had espn how where where we gonna where we gonna be at where the ocho lived in miami i'm in california and i'm flying back and forth to new york it works y 'all the reason why it did work because y 'all embrace it y 'all like Because you're coming from what we're saying, not how we look. Yeah, the backdrop is now you see the trophies and stuff like that, but y 'all ain't really paying a whole lot of attention to that.
1:00:20What we believe, and I've always believed,
1:00:24Shannon Sharpe:that when we put this together, people was more concerned and excited about what we had to say as opposed to what we look like. Yeah, you can do a three box or a four box. Yeah, you can do different angles and all that stuff. Yeah, we can have a slide. We have slides when we are together. The slide moves back and forth. Everybody have their own camera. But for this, I'm just looking right down the barrel. Ocho looking down his barrel. Joe's looking down his barrel. Yeah, one of my ads looking down the barrel. Yeah. Yeah, close enough.
1:01:01Shannon Sharpe:Backcap crew need to be commentators for Man 28 video game. Love the podcast. Keep doing y 'all thing. Appreciate you bro. Unk, Ocho, and still look at the chat, who one, who two it is. And don't make y 'all no bad brothers, Unk and Ocho, but it might make y 'all some bad brothers. Y 'all keep trying to lump Joe, Iso, in with y 'all bull, Jai.
1:01:21Chad Johnson:Hello.
1:01:22Shannon Sharpe:You see Joe, Iso got y 'all. He got everybody tricked. I'm a fool though.
1:01:27Chad Johnson:Yeah! Man, what's wrong with y 'all? Hey, I'm just being honest, Joe. The chat done spoke, man. Why y 'all act like the chat don't know what's going on? Don't y 'all know the chat see everything that's going on, man? Hey, Joe. You think you fooling the chat like that, like Dajon Love, huh? Like you really don't? Yo, it's okay, Joe. Hey, live in your truths. I live in my truths publicly. It's what I do. Hold on, hold on. Come on with me, man. Speaking of the Dajon Love kid, hey, boy, that boy done went off on the old show. Them boys knows that boy that left them messages that boy done.
1:02:09Shannon Sharpe:Man, I already watched that. I got some bad man, I already watched that.
1:02:14Chad Johnson:Hey, that man had me in tears over here, bro. I'm not gonna lie to you, boy. Ooh, I ain't seen no work like that. I ain't seen nothing like that, fella. He funny, boy. When he, hey, it's one joke where he talk about, I got shares in Gucci, and we're showing the girl I got this Rishaw Mule. Yeah, yeah. He got the receipt for it. Boy, and he was committed. When he was committed, boy he was committed, boy.
1:02:43Shannon Sharpe:Is he still in jail? Yeah, what? That man ain't getting out. He a flight risk. Yeah, he is a flight risk. Well, he a running risk. He ain't got nobody to get no flight. Boy, he funny, boy.
1:03:03Shannon Sharpe:Just wanted to say y 'all make my weekends and weeknights and days much better, and I know I can always get a smile when I'm down. Love y 'all, fellas. Appreciate that, bro. Appreciate that. Appreciate that support. ISO, I'm a LeBron fan, and for years you added extra stress to my life whenever we played you. Even though you are the ops, that don't make you no bad brother. Welcome to the home team. Grateful, Marcus.
1:03:29Shannon Sharpe:What up, Nightcap gang? Can I get a birthday shout-out? I turn 34 tomorrow. Also, I'm coaching ankle-biting football this fall, and that don't make me no bad brother to start practice with Oklahoma to see how many dogs I got on my squad. Man, you can't have the little kids out there doing Oklahoma. Now, we used to do that when I came up, Joe. We had Oklahoma. Hey, Oklahoma and bullet in the ring. We did Oklahoma, see how tough it is.
1:03:51Chad Johnson:Hey, they bring them old school. They bring them old school ways back, bro.
1:03:55Shannon Sharpe:Man, I don't think they're going to let them do that. But first of all, happy birthday, bro. Happy 34th birthday. Congratulations on coaching, giving back to the community by coaching the youth football. That's always a positive, but very, very, very happy birthday. Shout out to you. Please answer my question tonight, Big Three. Come on now. Who's the one player y 'all played against that talked the most trash? Ocho, number one tolerance, production, Cowboys, Super Bowl 27, like that. I got you. John Rambler talked the most trash.
1:04:38Joe, who you got, Joe? Who talked the most trash?
1:04:41Chad Johnson:I'm trying to think of some good trash talkers because I always bring up GP because, excuse me, it wasn't about necessarily him trash talking different players. Uncle Ocho, it was how he talked to the damn referee, bro. I'm like, damn, man, you let that man talk to you like that, you can get that man no tick. Call him all type of B's and everything. I'm like, so that was unusual. That's just like, he's at the top. And I don't really remember nobody who was just out there just, you know, just talking trash to different guys on the squad. Like, I don't really, I can't really pinpoint not one person.
1:05:25Outside of MJ when he came back.
1:05:30Chad Johnson:him and Paul Pierce had a good back and forth throughout their game my rookie year because, you know, he said he had to come back to the NBA just to get a pickup game with Paul Pierce. I guess he was saying like Paul, him and Paul was trying to, Paul was ducking him in the summer. Paul was ducking him in the summer. Didn't want to come get no run. So he, they talk trash the entire game. MJ, Antoine Walker, and Paul Pierce, the entire game, Arcan Ocho, they talk trash the entire game, bro. The entire game. I ain't lying.
1:06:03Shannon Sharpe:All right, so I coach 10th and 12th grade AAU team. Any encouragement, any encouraging words?
1:06:12Chad Johnson:Man, you got to make them boys work. They have to develop a real work habit to, you know, to want to be better, to want to be great, to want to be one of the top. Because what I've seen, those guys at their young age, is that a lot of them are talented, but they don't really, they ain't got the work habits. They don't work that damn hard. You know what I mean? So you got to catch them early, bro. You got to nip it in the bud. You got to make sure they got great work habits. And from there, everything else is kind of water under the bridge.
1:06:51Shannon Sharpe:Nightcap, often imitated, never duplicated, the undisputed pun intended. And the best sports talk with first take, y 'all wise as Fox. Appreciate that. Well, you know, we've seen a lot, done a lot, some good, some bad, more good than bad. But there's something that can be said about life experiences. There's no better teacher than life. there's no better nothing better than experience to be able to speak from something from first hand knowledge and a lot of us that's what we do, Ocho is talking about things that's happened in his life or he saw happen in others life Joe is the same way, I'm the same way you know growing up in the late 60s, early 70s things are different than it was in the 90s, what it is in the 2000s, what it is in the teens, what it is in the 2020s Life is vastly different.
1:07:54Shannon Sharpe:So I get to speak from a knowledge and an experience that, yeah, there are people that, but they don't have the platform to share those experiences that we have. And I think that's what separates us. Because there are people that were born in the 50s. My sister can share experiences that I know nothing about. She's eight years older than me. She just turned 66 last week. So, yeah, it's something to be said about experiences. and knowledge, and each of us, we were damn good players. We were damn good players. You said this, but you didn't do it when you played. Yeah. Yeah. Excuse me? Now don't make me go upstairs and get that jacket.
1:08:44Hey.
1:08:46Shannon Sharpe:Golden State ain't winning anything with Dunleavy's GM. WNBA Liberty player O.T. Two points at home in a big home game. You heard it here first.
1:08:58Chad Johnson:You seen the dream beat Minnesota the other day. I saw that beat the race off him. Yeah, and you and Ocho need to put some respect on the dream name too, bruh. Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa. When have I ever seen anything bad about a dream? Oh, I'm just saying in case you had, in case you was thinking about saying something here, you need to, yeah, that's all I'm saying, yeah.
1:09:22Shannon Sharpe:No, man, remember we talked about Olivia Miles. She didn't have an assist. Yeah, I seen that. I said, dang, she didn't even have an assist. Not an assist, not one. But we should have known, excuse me, think about it. If somebody's getting all of those rebounds, how many rebounds they think they're going to have? We're talking about, oh, they're going to get a double-double. Like, Fee's going to have eight, nine rebounds, and we know Angel Reese is going to get a double-double. but then we talking about Olivia Miles and we talking about you know, Alicia Gray there's only so many rebounds to go around
1:09:55Chad Johnson:yeah, it was good
1:09:56Shannon Sharpe:I don't think we hit on, I think we might have hit one I think we might have got one right because we had them
1:10:02Chad Johnson:we had them way too high up then the fact that she didn't get an assist I was like, I ain't gonna lie I was like, damn, that might be a misprint yeah
1:10:14Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, them Bengals defense is trash also. Remember you said that. Come on, come on, come on back in here, man. Week one.
1:10:27Shannon Sharpe:It won't matter, they're still the cowgirls, and I'm serving Iso the hot ale. When my giant put foot to you know what, you them girls.
1:10:36Chad Johnson:Who was that? What's that name?
1:10:40Shannon Sharpe:Jason. Jason.
1:10:42Chad Johnson:Jason, you got us bitten, Jason. I don't know what you got going on tonight, partner, but I'm telling you right now, the Cowboys ain't going to be playing this year, partner. We running the NLC. You hear me? Yeah.
1:10:56Shannon Sharpe:Joe, this is for you. Start bench cut. Troop, high five, mint condition. Mint condition number one. I still have a brigade blank, Arthur blank for Lamar. Hold on. You got mint condition in front of Troop?
1:11:10Chad Johnson:Yes. I begin to take the long way. home just so i i don't know hold on hold on hold on make condition true and who's the other one high five i like the way you kiss me when we're okay i got all of them i can't i can't i can't pick one i'm gonna stop i see i see you oh oh oh oh oh boy we gonna go off on this buddy they all them in all them in the playlist they in rotation but if i had to pick
1:11:50Chad Johnson:i'm gonna go i'm gonna go yeah i'm gonna go high five troop
1:12:00Chad Johnson:i know old man condition i know i know walk it out walk it out walk it out turbo i know I know. Mean condition hard too. I ain't gonna lie to you, Ochoa. You right, they hard. But that's my order. Mm. Doom, doom, doom, doom, doom, doom, doom. Hey, what do y 'all do? Hey, you are, hey, look, when we had a little party, man, I got the ox bro. I got the ox. I'm on the ox. I got the ox. Yo, I know all the words. Joe, what you talking about? I'm right there with you.
1:12:48Shannon Sharpe:Man, I can't be listening to that as we go and get ready for the show on Friday. I'm just telling y 'all. Hey. I got to break my headphones. Sam LeGrand 89, until he starts playing the par again, we're going to go address this man as Coldridge Bernard Stroud IV.
1:13:09Chad Johnson:Oh, man.
1:13:14Shannon Sharpe:Start bench cut. Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki, Charles Barkley. Who you got? I'm going. All of them won MVP. Two of the three won championships. Dirk was a finals MVP. Didn't KG win defensive? KG won defensive player of the year also when he was in Boston. I'm going KG Barkley dirt.
1:13:48Shannon Sharpe:Man, it's just bad. Goddamn strong.
1:13:51Chad Johnson:Hey.
1:13:52Shannon Sharpe:Ain't no way that Joker's supposed to be doing what he did. Hey, Unk.
1:13:56Chad Johnson:Unk. Ocho chat. Chat, if y 'all dispute anything that I said, especially with Charles Barkley being two, please go watch. I think it was the 90, was it the 93, 92?
1:14:09Shannon Sharpe:When he did that to the Warriors, when he dropped 56 from the Warriors.
1:14:12Chad Johnson:Yeah, or the finals run when they played against the Bulls, even though they lost. Bulls, yeah. That man was a dog. He said, listen, Ocho, he said he felt like he was the best player in the world until he played against MJ in the finals that year. That man, MJ was just on a whole nother level. But Barkley numbers in that series, Ocho, that man was putting up crazy numbers. Yeah.
1:14:41Shannon Sharpe:Iso, you're going to check out Coach Prime and the Buffs kick ass in the A on Thursday night. Ocho, Iso start bench cut. Sanford and Son, the Jefferson, good times. What's happening? Hey, Sanford and Son first for me and good times right behind me. Oh, for sure. Sanford and Son first and good times right behind me. Sanford and Sons, good times. I'm sorry. And the Jefferson and what happened to him.
1:15:06Chad Johnson:Yeah, that Sanford and Sons was serious.
1:15:09Shannon Sharpe:Hey, still Sanford and Sons. Still to the day, come on.
1:15:13Chad Johnson:Hey, Red Fox, he used to be on Lamont ass on that, didn't he, man? Yeah.
1:15:21Shannon Sharpe:Hey, listen. Listen. Fred Sanford, how you drink, how you drink and you just left the house of the Lord like this.
1:15:32Chad Johnson:Oh, it's the big one. Oh, yeah, I'm coming home to you.
1:15:36Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. It's the big one. Ocho, been talking about getting married since 08. Unk knows who his soulmate will stop being scared and call Cookie. Peter Paul said, try it off.
1:15:54Nah, not after no 24 years.
1:16:01Shannon Sharpe:Nah, quarter century.
1:16:02Chad Johnson:What's that? Mm-mm.
1:16:05Shannon Sharpe:Talking about cooking my soulmate. I got it. Okay. What? I got it. Oh, hey, I see. I heard you sneak that in there. I heard you. Yeah, yeah. I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm glad for you. I'm happy for you now. Hey, let's do that next step, man. I'm ready when y 'all are. You letting me know.
1:16:25Chad Johnson:Oh, man, I know some BS when I hear it, smell it, and see it. You hear me? I'm ready.
1:16:35Shannon Sharpe:Tupac Shakur finally got a piece today. What's your favorite Tupac song and movie? Tupac song, for me, probably Hit Him Up. That's your favorite one.
1:16:52First of all, you claim, we're inside,
1:16:55Shannon Sharpe:we're right, we cover quick with games. You claim to be a player, but I bucked your wife. We bucked so bad, boy, y 'all suck for life.
1:17:04Chad Johnson:Pressure in the air. All eyes, Brenda's got a baby. And I can't get away. All eyes on me. Ever since I met you, I can't beat the pressure. It's like the man don't understand, all he does is stress you. I could see the state of misery from the introduction. Oh, that ain't a part with heart.
1:17:24Shannon Sharpe:Hail Mary, come with me. Hail Mary. Yeah. Tupac movie, what you got, Juice? What you got, what you favorite Tupac movie?
1:17:35Chad Johnson:Poetic Justice? Yours Juice, Ocho? Absolutely.
1:17:43Chad Johnson:I'm gonna keep it real. He didn't play in many movies that wasn't great, bro. if y 'all really think about it. Nah.
1:17:49Shannon Sharpe:He was 25 when he died.
1:17:51Chad Johnson:Yeah.
1:17:51Shannon Sharpe:That's what people don't realize. He was 25.
1:17:54Chad Johnson:Yeah, I'm going to go, I'm going to go, I'm going to go pour the justice.
1:18:03Shannon Sharpe:I'm disappointed Dallas let Milton go. I'd love for him to stay, but football man, the football fan in me hopes that he gets a real chance on another team. Much respect. Yeah, they did him dirty. And if I'm him, I'm like, uh-uh. Y 'all claim, I'll go play, I'll get on y 'all Friday's squad. I ain't going back there. What were your travel plans for international games when you played? Rams are planning to arrive the day before the game. That's a long-ass trip. But they say, psychologists say it's best not to spend a whole lot of time and give your body a chance to try to get acclimated to the vast change in time zones.
1:18:41Shannon Sharpe:But we went, we played in Australia. We played in Sydney and we left like four or five days in advance.
1:18:51Chad Johnson:Yeah.
1:18:51Shannon Sharpe:I never got the chance. Yeah, we went to – Same thing with Berlin. Berlin was the same week because we played – I played in Berlin, Barcelona, Japan twice, Australia, and Mexico.
1:19:06Chad Johnson:We went to –
1:19:07Shannon Sharpe:We used to travel all the time for the preseason. That used to be the thing to try to – And then they came up with the World League, and you didn't travel quite as much. When I was in Brooklyn, we went to China.
1:19:18Chad Johnson:We went to China. We was over in China for like a week. We played a couple games over there, played other NBA teams, obviously. And when I was in Brooklyn, we went to Paris and played. We got to Paris like four or five days before we played too. I know it's a little different in basketball and football, but. Yeah.
1:19:44Shannon Sharpe:Oh Joe, I got some good news for you. I tracked down your Hall of Fame jacket. Some Haitian guy named Zoe got it on eBay.
1:19:50Chad Johnson:Oh man, come on, man. Y 'all style my boy out, man. Style him out. Style him out. Style him out. You see? Style him out. Style him out. Style him out. Hey, come on here. I try to tell some of my stories from back in the days and the chat just take it left field. Hey, well, we appreciate it though, bro. Don't think we won't appreciate it. We appreciate it. Yeah. yeah I ain't sure but I'm gonna keep telling my old stories from back in the days
1:20:18Shannon Sharpe:hey hey somebody do say 30 shift to say hey let me hold one of them helmets up I'm the next DJ I love city boys look I mean God be saying look these women been scammed the whole damn time and now y 'all man one guy one guy scared and now y 'all losing y 'all damn body women been out here They've been scammed me for years. They've been finessing for a minute, bro.
1:20:45Hey, Uncle Joe, they looked the par. They looked the par until you deal with them personally?
1:20:51Chad Johnson:Yeah. Yeah, what happened? Yeah. You done fooled me. Yeah, yeah, right.
