In short
The episode is a sports-and-entertainment roundtable that mixes NFL offseason talk with stadium/coach hot-seat news, then pivots to a NASCAR guest interview. Topic 1: Raiders—Maxx Crosby says he wants to stay and be “the best Raider” as long as possible, while hosts debate whether a trade is likely if the Raiders don’t contend. They discuss the Raiders’ receiving options (Trey Tucker, Naylor from Minnesota, Deontay Thornton Jr., Malik Beasley) and mention Brock Bowers’ return. Key claim: Crosby’s leadership matters most on defense, but meaningful football is the goal. Topic 2: Bleacher Report’s “most stacked” 2026-2027 teams—Texans #1 through Bills #10; hosts argue about why Seattle is lower and how the Cowboys/Steelers fit. Topic 3: Bills stadium—after a $2.2B debut, the team says it’s addressing seat sightline feedback over the next six weeks before the Sept. 17 home opener; league sources cite personal seat license holder complaints. Topic 4: USA Today hot-seat coaches—Shane Steichen, Aaron Glenn, Todd Bowles, Zach Taylor, Dan Quinn, Nick Sirianni, Matt LaFleur, etc.
Notable examples
seat “blocked eyeline” speculation; stopping Derrick Henry with specific defenders (Humphrey/Wiggins/Hamilton).
Guest
Ryan Blaney (NASCAR driver, Penske Ford; third-generation racer; won the 2023 championship; discusses growing up around his father/grandfather, first pro race at 18, and his dream car: Ferrari 550 Maranello).

2:57Shannon Sharpe:Max Crosby says he wants to be a raider. I never wanted to leave in the first place, but people have their own opinions on that. I'm not in the business side. I'm not on the third floor, so I don't know. I'm not a mind reader. I'm not the future predictor. I'm just, I'm not going to do that. I'm going to be present. I'm going to be the best raider I can be for as long as I possibly can.
3:18Joe Johnson:You know, obviously, once you're back, you're going to say all the right things, huh? Once you're back, you're going to say all the right things. I'm not sure. When is the last time the Raiders had a winning season? And I'm not saying that in a disrespectful way. I think with Derek Carr, right? I forgot.
3:30Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, when y 'all beat him.
3:31Joe Johnson:Yeah. When was that?
3:36Shannon Sharpe:Old stuff. We don't bring it up. Yeah.
3:38Joe Johnson:Yeah. Yeah. So I thought maybe a change is he never for him.
3:41Shannon Sharpe:Probably by the same time y 'all went to the playoff, about four, five years ago, Joe. Maybe 2021?
3:45Joe Johnson:No? No. Huh? My bad, Joe.
3:49Shannon Sharpe:My bad. I don't know. Damn, I kept it straight. I ain't.
3:52Joe Johnson:Hey, the cowboy then caught it straight. Yeah, but I think a change of scenery would have been good. Would have been good for him going somewhere where he can compete. I can compete for something. Play for something. Outside of just being, you know, it is what it is. But obviously, now that he's there, he's going to say all the right things.
4:14Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. What you thinking, Joe? You think, You think Jerry going to try to pull a rabbit out of there? He probably, Jerry probably trying Uncle Ocho, but I don't know if that's going to happen, bro. You know, I think Max Prozby is a great, he's a great leader, a great defender in the position that he plays, but I don't think Jerry going to be able to pull that one off, fellas. I'm sorry. Plus another guy making 30 plus million a year. Hey, at some point, like you say, you going to have to pay that? You're going to play CD? Man, come on, man. You can't play everybody. You can't have all these superstars over there, bro.
4:56Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, but I've been saying the right thing. But at some point in time, I would like to think Max would like to play meaningful football.
5:02Joe Johnson:Right, bingo. Same thing with Miles. Same thing with Miles. You know? They gave him the green light. You know what? You've done enough for us. You've done enough for us. and you would hope at some point the Raiders organization feel the same way about Miles. I mean, about Miles. About Max. About Max. Tripping.
5:24Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
5:28Shannon Sharpe:I think now, I think it's hard for me to see a scenario, if he's not traded before the season starts, that he's on the team next year. Especially if he gets off the field healthy. Or if they play great football. So, meaning, I mean, the Raiders ain't got a chance. They're young and experienced in a lot of different places. I mean, Max is really the only guy that I would like, I got to have on the defensive side of the football. I mean, they got some okay players, but Max is, we need to find out how they're going to be offensively. Right.
6:12Shannon Sharpe:Cousins at the helm. I think Cousins opened the season as the week one starter.
6:19Joe Johnson:What do the Raiders got over there at receiver? They got Tucker. LaTucker, he fast as hell. We got Brock Bowers.
6:30Shannon Sharpe:Brock Bowers back. He's healthy. He won the top tight end in all the football. We'll see Raiders receiving core.
6:45Shannon Sharpe:Trey Tucker Oh Naylor They got Naylor from Minnesota I don't know Deontay Thornton Jr. Malik Beasley Deontay Thornton is there
6:58Joe Johnson:They decent They got some playmakers
7:06Yeah
7:08Shannon Sharpe:to keep him healthy. That boy can play. He can go, boy. Him and Trey McBride? Yeah. It will be the future. Bleacher Report has released their most stacked NFL teams in the 2026. Houston Texans, one. Rams, two. Eagles, three. Detroit, four. Steelers, five. Ravens, six. Broncos, 7 Seahawks, 8 Niners, 9 Bills, 10 Damn, I thought another team was stacked, don't you? That's what my co-host been telling me
7:49Joe Johnson:Yeah, that's what he been saying Y 'all talking about my Cowboys? I mean
7:54Shannon Sharpe:They didn't talk about your Cowboys I mean, we can talk about them if you want to break them up Hey, we don't mind sitting back in the bushes Waiting for you to come by and we jump out on you We ain't tripping Hey, we ain't tripping. We ain't got to be up in the tabloids. You ain't got to have us at the top of Nathaniel. You hear me? Right, right, right. When the season starts, we bringing that tamper, partner. I'm just letting y 'all know. Okay, okay. Hell, who doing this? Bleachery. Man, nobody trying to hear all this. You say we're going to open the season. What? I ain't saying that, Joe. I'm sorry for interrupting you.
8:25Shannon Sharpe:Go ahead. What were you saying? Come on, man.
8:26Joe Johnson:I don't want you to lose you, bro. Hey, who was number one on that list?
8:31Shannon Sharpe:The Texans.
8:32Joe Johnson:The Texans. Okay.
8:33Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, they loaded. They loaded. They more loaded than the Rams? Well, look here. They must have been penciling because I don't give a dang who they got. If 99 comes back, they need to be number one. Absolutely. I don't care who they got. 99 and 95 together.
8:53Joe Johnson:And why was Seattle so low?
8:55Shannon Sharpe:Because Seattle was still loaded. Don't start me to lie, Ocho, because I think their defense, they really lost. They lost Wolland.
9:01Joe Johnson:Yeah, Tyreek, that was it.
9:02Shannon Sharpe:He went to Philly. Because that's why Philly, so you know, they got Wolin, they got Kenyon, Cooper. They got Cooper Dijon. Dijin.
9:15Joe Johnson:The two big D tackles. What's that? The other side is D-N. He don't wear no gloves. Number three.
9:26Shannon Sharpe:Oh, you're talking about the kid from Georgia. I can't remember his name. Oh, man, I can't think of his name. Ocho, I know who you're talking about. Boy, he back a punt. I like him. Boy, he be sitting lineman. They be pulling, he be sitting lineman on the ass.

9:46Yeah, the Texans, because the Rams offense.
9:55Shannon Sharpe:Detroit Steelers, damn. Hey, people loving the Steelers this year, Ocho.
10:00Joe Johnson:What? I mean, when they say loving the Steelers, is it offensively or because what they have defensively? They say they stacked. You ain't rolling, Ojo? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, they stacked. I mean, listen, they were stacked last year.
10:14Shannon Sharpe:Oh, hold on. Whoa, whoa, whoa. I see a team ain't up there. Whoa, I know somebody's team is up there. Somebody, both of them teams. Oh, man, here we go. See? See what I'm talking about, Ojo? See what I'm saying? Who team you talking about, Joe? He's talking about both his team. Both of my teams are in the top 10.
10:31Joe Johnson:I don't see neither one of your teams. Oh, we ain't worried about being up there. Because we know what we got.
10:36Shannon Sharpe:Here. Let me turn my light on and see if I can find y 'all.
10:43Joe Johnson:Hey, we know what we got.
10:44Shannon Sharpe:We're going to be all right. Hey, Chad. I got my light on. Let me see if I can find it right quick. You got to chill. Oh, you got to chill. Damn. You got to chill.
10:57Shannon Sharpe:Damn, Joe, I don't know why they put your team up there. Ain't none of them teams going to win it. So you don't think none of the teams that they list in the top 10? Oh, no, Joe. No, no, Joe. See, there you go, Joe. Joe, you not going to go to the game even if they do play it. So why you care? Okay, you know what I'm going to do.
11:19Joe Johnson:But Joe, you ain't been to a game. You don't know what I been. Joe, you not hard to spot at the Cowboys game, Joe. You say what? You're not hard to spot at a Cowboys game. You've never been.
11:30Shannon Sharpe:You don't know. I might be up there in the suite with Jerry and the kids now.
11:43Shannon Sharpe:And Steve in there, yeah. Yeah. Joe, you're not. There's nothing happening. Ain't nothing happening, Joe.
11:49Joe Johnson:Honestly, Joe's a Falcons fan.
11:50Shannon Sharpe:Hey, listen. Hey, look, look. I know you're an ultra boy. Y 'all want to hate on the Cowboys so bad. I can't wait for this. Joe, I've spoke glowingly about the Cowboys since we started. Yeah, but you low-key hate on them too, though. How? You say something great about pick, and you be like, Joe, yeah, yeah, da-da-da-da.
12:06Joe Johnson:But then, you know, you slick hate. You know what I mean? Joe, I've constantly given the offense Dak, Pick, and CD absolute credit. The defense hasn't proven themselves. So what you want me to say? Okay, you got Caleb Downs. You got, you know, you do your 2D tackles. but it's so many other questions that aren't answered because y 'all ain't played nobody yet. Okay, well we're gonna ask them when the season starts
12:32Shannon Sharpe:but Uncle always bringing up old stuff. I'm like, man, why'd you stand and talk about that? I got it. I ain't saying nothing. That's old show. Yeah, Bob, they said... I'm over here and mind them. I'm like, business. Nah, nah, I see what's going on. I was thinking about the beautiful day that I had today. Yeah.
12:48Shannon Sharpe:I can't wait
12:49Joe Johnson:till we see them damn Ravens over. Uh-oh. Hey, y 'all playing September or late in the season? Nah, we play. We play them in Rio. I mean, I'm saying early in the season? In Brazil. Early or late? It's early. Yeah. Yeah, I hope, I hope.
13:05Shannon Sharpe:It don't matter.
13:06Joe Johnson:I hope they play after week four because like around week four is when all offenses sort of hit their stride and the chemistry and everything, you know, it start flowing.
13:19Shannon Sharpe:Yeah.
13:22Joe Johnson:Okay, okay, okay.
13:24Shannon Sharpe:Close enough. L Jacket will be rare for him.
13:27Joe Johnson:So who you got winning, Unk? The Cowboy, man. Stop asking crazy questions. Hey, hold on. Hold on. I got a question for Unk, though. You've seen what George Pickens and CeeDee have done to many defensive duos, right? Yes. How in the world are they going to stop George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb? Marlon Humphrey. You got Wiggins on the other side. What's the answer? Oh, gee. I know you got Kyle Hamilton. Kyle Hamilton is arguably the best safety in the NFL. Hey, hold on, hold on. I'm sure the chat would agree. I just want to know, what is the answer to stopping CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens?
14:07Shannon Sharpe:Hold on. It's Wiggins. Six foot three, 250 pounds, Derrick Henry. That Jack Hamilton. Okay. Y 'all remember that? It's hard for Pickens and what you call him to get up with the football. Hold on, hold on. Hold on, hold on. What you think we just signed Big Quinty from? We clogging up that. No, no, no, sir. That man run through. Huh? Nah. Moving him off the ball. I think that train ran through here, man. It's over with. Oh, for King Henry? For him to be dominating like that? Oh, there ain't nothing going on. How is King Henry? How is he?
14:45Joe Johnson:A's don't matter with him. It don't matter? Yeah, A's don't matter with him. I just wanted, I just wanted, Listen, y 'all problem was being able to stop the run. You got Brother Williams, you got Brother Walker. Can you stop the run this year? We're going to find out week three. Hello. Hello. There you go. Say no more.
15:04Shannon Sharpe:All I want to do, put your heels on. Put your heels at nine yards. Come downhill. That's all I want to see him do. Put his heels at nine. Hey, Joe. Now y 'all start out, y 'all going to start out fired up. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. I want your leaders here all fired up. Come third quarter. No, they ain't going down. They ain't going down. Boy, you think they're made of D the way they be inviting people to see? Right this way, sir.
15:32Joe Johnson:Hey, Joe. Hey, Joe. Them boys got to get Derrick Henry going east and west, boy. He get to going north and south? No, no, no, no, no. I don't know who going to make that tackle. No, no, no, my friend. We is not having that. that could be Caleb Williams welcome to the NFL moment
15:54Joe Johnson:Derrick Henry come through that A that A gap, that B gap
15:57Shannon Sharpe:and he meet him
15:57Joe Johnson:and that offensive line it par like the C and it's just a safety what's gonna happen? what's gonna happen? yeah listen I know you love Caleb Downs I love him too but boy listen here I done seen many a grown men make business decisions with Derrick Henry come through that hole, boy.
16:21Shannon Sharpe:That ain't the fight you want to get involved in.
16:28Shannon Sharpe:You know, your first fight, it need to be a show victory.
16:36Shannon Sharpe:Hey, you know, you look at the first fight, you always got to make sure it's, yeah, I got it. If worse come to worse, at worst cases it's a draw everybody says it's a draw I can't take the L I can't be the first fight be a L alright thanks
17:02the Bills
17:03Shannon Sharpe:are addressing the feedback after their $2.2 billion stadium debut a record crowd attended Saturday scrimmage but obstructed the seats small video boards quickly became the focus of the conversation the president The team said in a statement, Saturday's practice was a great opportunity to test the new stadium. We are currently addressing internal and external feedback regarding the facility's operation following the first event. We'll utilize the next six weeks to refine any details as we prepare for the home opener September 17th. League sources told front office sport that the Bills have in fact heard from some of their personal seat license holders regarding sightline related issues.
17:47Shannon Sharpe:Again, we're going to throw this to Ocho because Ocho said there's so many people trying to make the team look bad. Ocho?
17:53Joe Johnson:I'm still waiting to see the proof. We seen it yesterday.
17:58Shannon Sharpe:Hey, I'm still. Joe. So, the Bills, the league source, League, told front office sports that the Bills have, in fact, heard from some of their personal seat license holders regarding sightline-related issues, which was what we tried to show yesterday. Ocho said the seat probably wasn't even seats up there.
18:22Joe Johnson:No, I said it was the stairs because I see the railing right there. I ain't never seen the railing right there. But, hey, shoot, ain't my goddamn stadium. That's on them.
18:33Shannon Sharpe:Y 'all stayed in my home with 20 ,000 people, Ochoa. You ain't getting no money.
18:36Joe Johnson:Hey, you ever been to the jungle during a Monday night, Thursday night, Sunday night game? Like that? But ain't no better environment, boy. Ain't no better environment than Pacor Stadium, boy, at a primetime game, Joe.
18:52Shannon Sharpe:I don't know what it was called when we was there. We just called it Beat the Bingo Stadium. Because that's what happened every time we went there, Joe.
18:59Joe Johnson:I never lost to you. I never lost y 'all. Oh, they go right there. Well, we beat the brakes off y 'all. They go to picture right there, huh? Yes. Hey, well, that show is high up, boy. Well, Dad, what you think everybody see? What you think everybody... I mean, for you and those... Club level? You want everybody to see club level? I'm just saying, but you sitting that high, and you worried about being able to see, get you some better tickets first. Okay, what about this right here? Them the seats, huh? Yeah. Yes. That's bad. That boy. Yeah. I ain't see that little version yesterday.
19:37Shannon Sharpe:I told you to put your head over the bad eye. Huh?
19:40Joe Johnson:What if you was sitting right here? Shoot, I'm going to stand up. The whole game? Hold on. What about the people behind you? They better stand up too.
19:52Hey.
19:53Shannon Sharpe:I guess y 'all going to be standing the whole damn game. Because you know people going to say, hey, Joe, sit down. Man, listen. Nah, this ain't it.
20:00Joe Johnson:Well, hold on. Everything constructed already. I'm trying to figure out what are they going to do in the season to get ready to start in two more weeks or three weeks, if that.
20:08Shannon Sharpe:Hey, the West Bay, they'll figure it out. That's one thing they will do. They going to figure it out. But they said they used this company that's built a lot of the stadiums. How are you not? I mean, what you do is like, okay, you go around and you look at what team, like, okay, the Super Bowl. What team, what cities normally do, they go look and see how what the previous city and how they did it, how they organized it. Bro, how you not take something like, man, I really like the new SoFi Stadium. Man, you know what? I like that big jumbotron that Jerry got in Jerry's world. And I really like, you know, this part of that stadium.
20:55Shannon Sharpe:and you kind of take bits and pieces all the while trying to tie it in to what you are. It ain't that complicated. Hell, you got$800, you got damn near a billion dollars of taxpayers' money.
21:09Joe Johnson:At least get it right, huh?
21:13Shannon Sharpe:Man, they build that nice stadium out there. Why Buffalo won't play in no dome because they want to use that as home field? No, no, no. You can't do that.
21:22Joe Johnson:You can't play for the Buffalo Bills and play in the domes. Joe. Man, come on. You, especially when you get to the playoffs, you want teams that are coming from warm weather cities that come into that cold weather. They do not use... Feel that.
21:35Shannon Sharpe:Damn, boy. Ocho, speculation is that they're going to have to make those seats unsellable. So in other words, they won't be able to sell those tickets. They won't be ticketed seats.
21:45Joe Johnson:Okay, I see what you're saying. I see what you're saying. Or you can sell them for a very, very cheap price that people understand that their eyeline and vision may be blocked at time, depending on what side of the field the play is on.
22:01Shannon Sharpe:Guess what? Your ally is going to be blocked because somebody is going to be going in the opposite direction all the time.
22:09Shannon Sharpe:So your ally is going to be blocked every series because somebody is going in that direction. Yeah, because, I mean, you know, it's kind of like Jacksonville. Remember Jacksonville, when they started having out, those people start showing up. They put the black tarp on it. Kind of Miami. You put those black tarps, ain't nobody sitting up there. Damn. So, I mean, and the stadium, I guess the stadium is a little smaller than the original Rich Stadium, the old Buffalo Bill Stadium. So now, it's about to be even smaller if you take, you know, because the thing is, look, your money is in the ticket and the suites and things of that nature.
22:49Shannon Sharpe:And you got to make it because what else are you going to put your other hole up there? It ain't nothing like you can hold a whole lot of stuff. Come January, if it ain't a football game, what you going to hold it? Maybe hockey. The Sabres can use it. But it's not like Mercedes-Benz in Atlanta where you get the national championship, you get the Peach Bowl, you get the SEC championship. You know what I'm saying? You get high school football games. I mean, what you going to do? It's not like Jerry's World. You know, you got a big truck rodeos. You got tractor pull, you know, monster truck series.
23:28Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, see, that's what you get for not honoring OJ. The ghost of OJ struck again. Put that man. They're not going to put his name up in the stadium. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I forgot about that. Yeah.
23:46Shannon Sharpe:It ain't having that. This episode sponsored by Jace Medical. It's 11 p.m. The pharmacy is closed and you need meds now. 24:32On Solita, we share the messy stories of traveling alone as a woman. Your Duolingo is not going to come back to you when a man is inside of you. Oh no! I'm Julie Pinheiro and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us. Not a lot of people smile around here. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it.
25:19So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, Portlandia fans. Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen here. You know us, or rather, you know them. Tony and Candice, Nina and Lance, Spike, and yes, the chicken. We've played a lot of iconic characters over the years, but today we're showing up as ourselves to tell you about Podlandia, AO Rewatch, our brand new podcast. Each week, we'll revisit an episode of Portlandia from the very beginning, breaking down the sketches, exploring the backstories of our most iconic characters, revisiting the Portland locations you know and love, and opening up about our creative process.
26:03How did any of this get made? Why do we think that was a good idea? We're ready to talk about it. And we'll also be joined by the people who helped bring it all to life. Guest stars, collaborators, and friends, including director Jonathan Kreisel, the mayor himself, Kyle McLaughlin, legendary musician Amy Mann, and many more. Kyle is going for it here. You fully improvised, not just words, but a song, a melody. Well, I thought he was going to write, I thought you were all going to write a song. I remember you thinking that. Listen to Podlandia Ayo Rewatch on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
26:40Hey, this is Hayes Davenport. And Sean Clements. We host the podcast Hollywood Handbook. Every episode we're trying to help our guests improve their careers by mainly focusing on how they can help us improve our careers. The show is famously super accessible, so you can easily jump into any of our 650 episodes and understand what's going on. We recommend some of our recent episodes with Ben Stiller. The definition of what is a movie has kind of changed anyway too, right? What do you think it is now? It's images and words being spoken, captured by some sort of technology. Danny McBride. He loves Boba.
27:12Oh, that's fantastic. And you make it on, you make your own. That's great. I call him Taro Reed. That's a good name. They're all named after cast members of American Pie. Yeah. I call, I don't, I never looked up if she was in this, but I call him Leachie Sobieski. Yeah. I don't think she was in American Pie, but I still like that. Haven't looked it up. Haven't looked it up. She was prominent around the same time. Then Mary Steenburgen. Why are you guys talking to me? I'm worried. Why are you talking so down to me that you think I don't understand your little play game? I just really am trying to set you up for success here.
27:50Listen to Hollywood Handbook on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Nick Turturro. You probably know me from NYPD Blue, The Longest Yard, or Spike Lee's Black Klansman. But I'm also from Queens, which means I know pizza. And on my new podcast, Delivering Happiness with Nick DeToro, I deliver pizza from Prince Street Pizza to a new guest. Are you delivering pizza now? Then we sit down for a real conversation. I've shared a slice with everyone, from Seth Rollins. What are you doing with my belt? To Alex Rodriguez. Just to let you people know, we're talking to one of the goats here.
28:23To Bill Burr. I don't think I've ever met somebody so exactly out of their mind as I am. And now we even have more great guests coming up, including the great John Turturro.
28:34Joe Johnson:It's called happiness. Delivering happiness. Mariano Rivera. Oh, my God. And many, many more. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Delivering Happiness with Nick Turturro. And listen now. It's still Bill. Yeah, one of the best ever, too. Uh, the. The.
28:58Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, they ain't got three players better than OJ in the history of that franchise. Bruce Smith, Andre Reid, Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas.
29:10Joe Johnson:Want me to keep going?
29:13Shannon Sharpe:Andre Reid, Joe DeLamalier. If I'm not mistaken, I think those are your Hall of Famers. How many of them in front of OJ?
29:23Joe Johnson:That's a good, hey, that's a bad.
29:25Shannon Sharpe:It's hard, but a Jus. 2 ,000 yards in a 14-game season. He was the best player in football. Forget running back. He was the best player in football. Hey, listen. He don't get the – because they didn't win. I tell you what, go ask the Steelers. When he put 250 on the Steelers one Sunday, on the steel curtain.
29:45Joe Johnson:Yeah, don't give me the line. I know Jus was the real deal, bro. Yeah, for sure.
29:54Shannon Sharpe:68 Heisman Trophy winner.
29:59Shannon Sharpe:But Joe, you knew that. I mean, you know, Joe know his Heisman Trophy winners now. I know some of them. I ain't going to lie to you. I know some of them, Mark.
30:15Shannon Sharpe:I mean, I don't know. Me personally, I don't think the Buffalo Bill fans like, Oh, my God, I'm not coming to a game now because O.J. Simpson's name is on the facade. It's up in the stadium. I don't think that would have occurred. You don't think they would have spoke on that? No. It was up in the old stadium and ain't nobody spoke on it. I don't know, man. I seen that documentary, bro. Oh, I saw the documentary. I met him several times. O.J.? Jews he used to cover the NBC he was the sideline reporter for NBC for real
31:00Shannon Sharpe:in the early 90s yeah absolutely yeah they went to bed on that but that's a story for another day I may or may not have seen those shoes
31:16Shannon Sharpe:I saw it by the Rams game about three years ago. About three, four years ago. He's at a Rams game. I think it was a Monday night game. I went to the game, yeah. Yeah, the Rams, when the Rams won the Super Bowl and they played, they opened the season against Buffalo. And Buffalo beat the brakes off of them. Yeah, he was at the game. USA Today released their top 10 coaches on the hot seat heading into 2026. Shane Steichen, the coach, number one. Jets' Aaron Glenn, number two. Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles, number three. Zach Taylor, four. Dan Quinn, five. Nick Sirianni, six. Matt LaFleur, seven. Clint Kubiak?
32:06Shannon Sharpe:How Clint Kubiak on the hot seat? He just got there.
32:08Joe Johnson:Hold on. Well, Aaron Glenn just got there too.
32:12Shannon Sharpe:He on the hot seat. Damn. Man, you know the Jets don't play, Ochoa.
32:18Joe Johnson:Listen, I understand that. Most of the time, they give us those opportunities and know damn well we're not going to be able to turn anything around. In order to turn them around, you need at least three to four years to do so. So, hey, it is what it is. And how the hell is Shane Steichen on the hot seat with the way they played last year?
32:38Shannon Sharpe:Well, do you remember they got up to that great start, Ochoa? They was the number one seed in the AFC. Danny Dimes got hurt.
32:43Joe Johnson:so you can't put the coach on the hot seat when he was playing as well as you were.
32:48Shannon Sharpe:Hey, that lady, she took over, the three daughters took over, but one of them in charge, I forget her name. She don't play.
32:58Joe Johnson:And Zach Taylor being on the hot seat, that don't make no sense. One thing you do know about Mr. Brown, if there's a coach in the contract, he's going to play the entirety of that contract out. He's not fighting.
33:10Shannon Sharpe:Didn't he just sign in the kitchen?
33:12Joe Johnson:Exactly. Exactly, and he ain't firing nobody. So that one don't make no sense. There was somebody else. There's one more name you said that didn't make any sense to me that just got there.
33:20Shannon Sharpe:Sirianni. Todd Bowles, Dan Quinn, Nick Sirianni.
33:24Joe Johnson:Sirianni. Okay, Sirianni I can see.
33:26Shannon Sharpe:Matt LaFleur for the Packers.
33:28Joe Johnson:Okay, I can see that too. Again, these are situations where you think about the Packers team, as great as they are, the expectations are extremely high. The expectations are extremely high over there, and they're feeling if they don't play well this season, which I'm sure they will do because offensively they're good, defensively they're sound, I think they might move in different directions. I can see that happening. As great as the Packers are. Excuse me, not great. As good as the Packers are. Let me see who else.
34:05Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, he just got the job. This is his first year. He already on the hot seat?
34:10Joe Johnson:Well, hell, Aaron Glenn just got down. How are you on the hot seat already? Look what he got to work with. And bringing another coach in, still not having anything to work with, is still going to give you the same goddamn results.
34:23Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, got to have some players. And then Patriots, Mike Vrabel.
34:27Joe Johnson:Man, that's all right. Now they're just putting anything on there now. They're just putting anything on there. You know, good and well, Mike Vrabel ain't on no hot seat, man.
34:36Shannon Sharpe:The man just went to the damn Super Bowl.
34:38Joe Johnson:You know what, at that point? What, what, what? Who is it? Who wrote this? Who wrote this? USA Today. He made A. He made A. A. And they're just filling out names. It's about two or three on that that actually makes sense.
34:56Shannon Sharpe:Yes. And if they were going to get rid of Raven for the trend, even though that doesn't impact, I don't think anything that transpired this offseason, and we know what transpired this offseason, does that impact his ability to coach this team? Because when I make a move, I'm looking at it, okay, how does this impact his said behavior? Does it impact this team? Absolutely not.
35:20Joe Johnson:I wish more people were inside these locker rooms to see how these players really don't give two you-know-what.
35:28Shannon Sharpe:I don't care nothing to do. Man, I ain't studying what that man got going on. I got my own issues. Hello. My baby mama dragging me back to court, nobody she want more money. You think I worry about what the hell he got going on? Hey, say that a little louder for the people in the back, for the people who probably... Yeah.
35:51Shannon Sharpe:Joe, I'm for real, man. I ain't worried about what somebody else got going on. I got, but they don't even know.
35:57Joe Johnson:Oh, man. Hey. I just, you know what? I wish, wish, I wish, I don't know how to...
36:14Joe Johnson:Hey, what you want? Dial up over there? Hey, Joe. My co-parents send fire to me.
36:25Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, we can eat. Yeah. Oh, that was me. I think that was me, guys. This internet here, we won't be back in the hotel no more. I promise you. I think it was you. Were you on dial-up over there? Hey, they ain't got too many more times to mess up with you. You done with them. I'm done. I'm done. I was done with them this time. They booked this hotel without my knowledge. But it won't happen again. You good. You good. I promise you. You good. Yeah, but whatever code you got going on, as long as it's not a medical emergency, as long as it does involve life and death, I got my own issues like I say my co-parent got me out of the gun man leave me alone no no I ain't done with you yet what what you mean you ain't done with me yet come on come on Joe girl I ain't bother you
37:26Joe Johnson:oh no oh oh no the funny thing about it is I got something for you it's a cold game boy Hey, if you were able to tap in to the lives of each individual player and the issues that they have going on, along with the so-called scandal between coach and the reporter, they would put what they got going on to shame. Yeah, for sure. They would put it to shame. I mean, people have no clue. Oh, man, it's just, I'm not here to speak on that.
37:59Shannon Sharpe:You know what happened, Ocho? it just because it played out publicly.
38:07Damn.
38:11Damn.
38:16Joe Johnson:You might need a little hot spot over there, boy.
38:24Shannon Sharpe:...play a million to ask a person about his life for...
38:33Shannon Sharpe:It is what it is.
38:38Joe Johnson:Hey, hey, hey, we ain't hear nothing you just said, boy.
38:42Shannon Sharpe:I can hear y 'all though.
38:43Joe Johnson:Yeah, you can hear us now.
38:46Shannon Sharpe:Oh, yeah.
38:47Joe Johnson:I thought Joe was froze for a minute. Joe wasn't moving. Nah, I'm locked in.
38:53Shannon Sharpe:I'm locked in to him. Talk about we need a Starlink. I need a new hotel. Where you at? Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah. Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it. I ain't going to say a word, man. I just won't be here no more. Don't be messy, bro. Don't be messy. Don't be messy.
39:08Joe Johnson:I'm being messy, man. I mean, I'm just saying. Like, they got dialed up. All right. Don't worry about it.
39:14Shannon Sharpe:I don't know what it is. I can never get phone service on my, what you call them? Internet service on my phone. Jordan got to hook it up to Jordan hotspot. Then Jordan leave. I can't get internet no more.
39:33Shannon Sharpe:Joe had to leave his phone in here. I ain't lying, Joe, man. I said, come on, man. I already knew we was driving up because I was in the back of the car. I was nodding off. We driving up. I said, we staying here?
39:51Shannon Sharpe:Oh, we got a very, very special guest joining us. What's happening? drive the number 12 car for Penske Ford Mustang and his ninth season's team owner, Roger Penske, and his 11th full season on the NASCAR Cup season. Here he is, gas with Ryan, on the gas with Ryan Blaney. Ryan, what's going on, man? How are you? Thanks for having me on. Ate it, ate it.
40:14Joe Johnson:Go ahead, Ochoa, take it away. Ate it's a nice surprise, man. What's up, baby? How's everything? Man, I'm doing good. Have you recovered yet? I'm still a little nauseous. I'm still a little nauseous. It's kind of affected my relationship a little bit, and that's another topic for another day. Outside of that, man, again, thank you. Again, thank you. That was a tremendous experience for me, you know, being able to ride with you.
40:38Shannon Sharpe:Let's take a look at the episode, Ocho, what you're talking about. Let's give the fans an opportunity to see what you're actually talking about.
40:44Joe Johnson:Oh, my goodness. That's crazy. Are the tires warm? Oh, yeah. So that means we won't spin out I hope not Oh, f*** it Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no Chad, you made it through I'm appreciative of you sticking with me I love you, brother I had you back I had you back You toughed it out I feel bad Yeah? Yeah I got the f*** I feel
41:23Shannon Sharpe:man i thought right how fast were you how fast we lost chad um but we were probably going we probably got up to about 170 right there yeah so we were we were digging a little bit not too bad but uh man i give it to you chad you toughed it out man that's that's not easy to do you stuck with it all day. It was a hot one, but I appreciate you coming on, man. That was a fun experience. I hope you had a good time and hopefully we get to keep doing that.
41:52Joe Johnson:Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I think one of the things, obviously, I'm one that enjoys NASCAR. I've been to a few of the motor speedways, obviously, on first dates, and I really enjoy it. People don't understand how difficult it is when you're not in the driver's seat going at 170, 180, 190 miles an hour. So it's weird for me. I get nauseous because I'm not in control. I'm not in control. And when you come up that bank and you hug the wall, and I'm trying to get in the seat with you because I'm scared, we're going to hit the wall. It's an experience that I can't explain that people would have to experience for themselves to get a better understanding.
42:34Joe Johnson:And the road course, the road is called the road course, right? Yes, sir. That threw me full loop. I was done. I was done. Yeah. Were you at, Walking Cliff or Snow?
42:45Shannon Sharpe:Where were you at, Walking Cliff or Snow? We were at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. So we did the big track in Indianapolis that's been around for over 100 years. Okay, yeah. And then they have a road course in the middle of it. So we got two different types of racetracks that we took Chad on. Oh, okay. Yeah, so we got the, Yeah, because I was like, you can't get up to no 170 on no... No, no, no. So we got to the 170 on the big track at Indy. Okay, yeah. And then we did the road course, which were probably top speed only 150. But it's a lot more intense, a lot of deceleration, a lot more curve hits, you know.
43:21Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. So, Shana, we got to get you in that car, man. You think I can feel it on the back this fast? Hell yeah. All right, well, I'm down. I'm down for it. of there, bro. He's not going to make it. No, no, no, no, no.
43:34Joe Johnson:He's not going to make it.
43:39Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Ryan, look, you're a third generation. Your grandfather drove cars. Your father drove cars. And a lot of these drive, a lot of these, either their grandfather, you know, you're like, children, his grandson drives. A lot of these, you know, you grew up around. What was it like growing up in a household where your grandfather and your father drove? Is that what you always wanted to do? Yeah. Well, as a kid, I just wanted to do what my dad did. Yeah. I was, my dad was my hero. My dad is still my hero to this day. So growing up around watching my dad do a sport that was really unique. I just, I was just in awe of these drivers, like what they could do.
44:17And as a kid growing up around that, I got to see all the ins and outs of the sport. You know, not only the cars on the racetrack, but what it took behind the scenes, right? What goes on in a race shop? How many people it takes to build these cars? I feel like the behind-the-scenes thing, it's the same as football or basketball or whatever. There's a lot more that goes on behind the scenes than what you see on TV. It takes a lot of parts and pieces to get everything ready to go. So I got to see that as a young kid, but I was really lucky that I got to do what my dad did because that's just what I always wanted to do.
44:50And I've been really fortunate to be able to make a career out of it.
44:54Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Ryan, what was your first race like? Like, was it jittery? Were you fired up like butterflies? Like, what was it like? Man, my first race was I was nine years old. So I didn't really understand, you know, at the time when you were a kid. It was just something fun to do. But I remember my first professional race when I was 18, like in the first kind of stepping stones in NASCAR. I was nervous as can be because, you know, I had people who watched my dad. I'm trying to live up to my dad's expectations, to people's expectations of me. It was a lot of pressure, that's for sure. But I tried to think of it as, hey, this is a great opportunity and make the most out of this awesome opportunity that you have, you know, and enjoy it and have fun with it.
45:43That's easy to say 12 years later. But at the time, at the time, it's really hard to do. So that's why I, you know, when I see these kids who have fathers or mothers that were in the sport that they want to do and the pressure that people put on them, I completely understand that. Completely understand. Right.
46:02Shannon Sharpe:How hard is it for you not to get a speeding ticket when you drive fast for a living? Contrary to popular belief. I think most race car drivers, I can't speak for most of them, but me in particular, I'm a very slow driver on the roads. Seriously? Very slow driver. Really? If we got to get somewhere fast, my wife is like, let me drive because she is the speed demon. So, I mean, I'm pretty slow. I'm pretty slow driver on the roads. I get paid to go really fast for my job and it does not benefit me whatsoever to go fast on the streets.
46:36Joe Johnson:You know what? The fact that you you you go fast for a living. do you have a passion or do you have any enthusiasm about having fast cars foreign cars ferraris lamborghinis are you really into that stuff being that you you normally drive slow when you're not on the track yeah i mean i am i am kind of a car collector you know i just enjoy vehicles um my my dream car you got the 427 car i don't i don't i'll tell you my my dream car and it's The only reason I have this dream car is when Bad Boys 2 came out and Will Smith, Mike Lowry, was driving the Ferrari Marinello 550. I thought that was the coolest car ever.
47:25So that is my dream car. And I've been looking for one. That's silver, the exact same color that he had in that movie. I've been looking for it for years and I cannot find it. But hopefully one day I get to get it. Yeah.
47:35Shannon Sharpe:But you think, Ryan, you got the Eleanor Mustang that you could get. You got the Shelby, the truck, you got the Riles truck. I mean, you got so much that came out with this Ford, this supercar. I don't think they make it anymore. You remember the supercar they came out with about 10, 15 years ago? It was the GT, wasn't it? The GT? Yeah, Ford GT. That's exactly what I'm talking about. What are you talking about? Yeah, so the GT was big like in the 60s. They ran the ball with it.
48:09Joe Johnson:and then they came out with another one in like 05 and then they came out with a new version of it in like 16 17 and we so i drive for ford right so they gave all the four drivers an option to buy one in 16 and it was my rookie year i wasn't making any money i could not i could not justify it was one of those things too look back on you're like you're an idiot for not getting one of them things, but man, I couldn't do it. I couldn't fork it out back then. Couldn't do it. Matter of fact, matter of fact, the car you're looking for, what's it called again? What's your dream car? It's a Ferrari Maranello 550.
48:49550 Maranello. Yeah.
48:51Joe Johnson:Okay. Okay. Okay. Listen, I got a friend of mine down here in Miami. We call him Nuno and I got another friend named Leroy. They can get me whatever. All right. I could probably find you that car and get you a little half off, get you a little discount on it. So I'm going to check in with them tomorrow. I like discounts.
49:05Shannon Sharpe:You probably don't want to be caught in that car. You don't want to be caught in the car that Lulu got you, Brian. I'm just telling you. I'm going to be taking it to the shop every week. That's not good. Nah, I ain't going to have no VN number on there. No, you just go get stopped one time and they're going to be taking you to the shop. They're going to take you to another shop. On Solita, we share the messy stories of traveling alone as a woman. 53:47I'm Nick Turturro. You probably know me from NYPD Blue, The Longest Yard, or Spike Lee's Black Klansman. But I'm also from Queens, which means I know pizza. And on my new podcast, Delivering Happiness with Nick Turturro, I deliver pizza from Prince Street Pizza to a new guest. Are you delivering pizza now? Then we sit down for a real conversation. I've shared a slice with everyone, from Seth Rollins. What are you doing with my belt? To Alex Rodriguez. Just to let you people know, we're talking to one of the goats here. To Bill Burr. I don't think I've ever met somebody so exactly out of their mind as I am.
54:21And now we even have more great guests coming up, including the great John Turturro.
54:25Joe Johnson:It's called happiness. Delivering happiness. Mariano Rivera. Oh my God. And many, many more. Open your free HiHeartRadio app, search Delivering Happiness with Nick Turturro, and listen now.
54:37Shannon Sharpe:Oh, man. So you start, so Ryan, you started off with the mids? Yeah. You started off driving mids? Yeah, they were, they're called quarter midgets. They're a go-kart with a roll cage on them. They were really big where I was growing up. So it's a good, it's a great place for kids to start. Quarter midgets, go-karts, you know, gosh, I see kids nowadays, five years old starting. Yes, five? Five? Yeah, it's crazy, man. But I've also seen kids that, you know, they don't start racing until they're 12 or 13, you know? So there's a large age gap of when you can get going. Let me ask you a question. How about the horsepower?
55:20Shannon Sharpe:Because my brother had a go-kart when we were growing up, and my grandfather would only let him get a three-horsepower. But you know they had a three-horsepower, they had a five, they had an eight, and then it went on up after that. My grandfather was like, nah, you ain't getting anything. Yeah, I mean, there's all ranges, right? Like you said, three, five, eight. Gosh, they make 20-horsepower carts nowadays that are fast, right? Wow. Yeah, you're not a fan because we felt three horsepowers moving. You're whipping those horses. Three of them, they're moving.
55:55But go ahead.
55:56Shannon Sharpe:You got a bunch of accolades. You won the Cup Series, All-Star Race winner. What's been your proudest? What's your biggest achievement thus far? I think when we won the championship in 23, you know, a few years ago, that was a cool experience. And, you know, I talked about my dad earlier and to have my whole family there. I mean, my dad, my mom, my sisters who supported me the whole time, who still do like for them to share that moment was was great. And especially my dad, who was around the sport for a long time, who never got to achieve that. And, you know, I'm a dad now. My son's nine months old.
56:33And I could only imagine, you know, being a dad now. I like if he picks the sport up. I hope so. And I hope he's way more successful than I am. You know, I think just to be proud of your son and to see your dad proud of you, because that's all I ever wanted to do. I just want to make my dad proud, you know, whether it was professionally or in my life, you know, you just want to make your parents proud. And it was cool to share that moment with them because he and I shared a lot of the same similarities from, from racing.
57:03Shannon Sharpe:Right. Who's the rival? Like when I, I don't know if you remember this, but your dad would remember it. It's like when you had Cale Yarbrough and Allison was going at each other and Richard Petty and Daryl Waltrip and these guys, like, it felt, I don't know if it was contrived, but it just felt like, nah, bro, if I can't win, I'm not going to let you win. I'm going to put your ass into the wall. You're not winning this race in front of me. Man, it's changed a lot. You know, I mean, just like everything, it's changed and it's gotten, I feel like all sports have gotten really commercialized. Right.
57:37I mean, and that's how it is because you have big companies back in, you know, the teams or the or whatever the drivers. So, you know, yeah. Back in, like you said, I mean, the Allisons and the Yarbrough fight was what put NASCAR on the map. Those guys just throwing haymakers.
57:57So I think there's some of that nowadays still, but I don't think you're going to see that stuff is what it used to be. But it's just because, you know, there's a lot on the line. but yeah maybe one day hell I might just have to start throwing haymakers I don't know I don't know
58:15Shannon Sharpe:you know before we we got to get him on this one we have a little series what we call cut, bench, start so in football we'd be like a Jerry Rice a Terrell Otens and a Randy Moss so it's not anything easy so we gave you the hardest we possibly could get you got Dale Sr Richard Petty Jimmy Johnson you gotta start somebody you gotta bench somebody you gotta cut somebody yeah you didn't make it easy
58:48Joe Johnson:that's a good one I'm gonna start Dale Sr I'm gonna bench Jimmy Johnson I'm gonna cut Richard Petty I know I'm gonna get grief no matter what I say
59:00Shannon Sharpe:you absolutely are cause all of them gotta you gave me the best guys. That's ridiculous. That's my pick. But you know what? Richard had the best those cars where he had the Cudas and all. Can you imagine can you imagine if he like some of those cars were to come up for auction Richard paired the 43, the Superbird the Cudas and the Barracudas. Can you imagine what they would be worth? Millions. Millions of dollars. Those back in that day in the 60s and 70s there was so much innovation going on right you know there was no technology it was just really smart people doing incredibly imaginative things you know and that just blows me away you know today it's all computers and technology and stuff but back then it was just it was just guys and girls who just had huge imaginations that just tried stuff and if it sucked they threw it away and they'd go in a different direction.
1:00:00But like that level of just ingenuity to me in motorsports back then was just unbelievable. And the Pettis caught on before everyone else did. And that's why they were so successful. That Mopar. Yeah.
1:00:15Joe Johnson:Go ahead, Ocho. I want to say, outside of racing, obviously, I know it takes up a lot of your life, just like all of us in general with our respective crafts. It's a lot of sacrifice and a lot of time that has to be put in to be as good as you are. Outside of that, you got to have passion. You have to be enthusiastic about something else that gives you a sense of, okay, now I can relax and do something to get away from the game. It's a sense of peace. For me, it's cigars and gaming. What's your outlet? it well for the last nine months it's been my son you know uh that has been a world changer of world changers you know um it's something that my wife and i have even grown closer yeah as our son has come in the world um no matter how shitty my weekend was you come home and see your son smiling that he's just happy you're there you know and that changes your your mood immediately um other than that i'm a big golfer i love to play golf um it's really peaceful to me i know people get angry at golf but i love the mentality of golf like slowing it down being really thoughtful because it's just you you know you're not playing against anybody else it's just you and the shot that you can make so i've always enjoyed that um and we have a lot of animals i like i like hanging around with our animals we have dogs and chickens and llamas and goats and And I just like watching.
1:01:43Yeah, we got a little farm and every animal is different. I like watching their different personalities.
1:01:50Joe Johnson:Right. And I just sit down there in the morning with my coffee and just watch them because I think it's the funniest thing in the world. Yeah, I told you, I told you, we Joe and I, we talked about like we don't have a farm, but we talk about certain animals that we want. And Joe wants to get a capuchin monkey and I want to get a hyena. Oh, I didn't expect that. that hyena took you for a loop yeah I mean you know you can domesticate a hyena I didn't know that I don't think Steve Irwin ever told us that I don't it's the first time for everything so I'm going to try as soon as I get my license
1:02:31Shannon Sharpe:Marlon Perkins was before your time in Wild Kingdom but he couldn't domestic you can't domesticate no hyena what type of dogs do you have I have a lab shepherd. He's about 80 pounds. And then my wife's dog, she adopted her. We don't really know what she is. She adopted her. My wife grew up in South Florida. And she was a rescue from Puerto Rico. So she's a Puerto Rican street dog. We don't really know what she is, because she's a scrappy little thing. Right. Yeah. But a hyena and a capuchin monkey. That's a... You got to be careful with monkeys. I knew some people who had... They didn't have capuchins, though.
1:03:06Shannon Sharpe:they had I think they had chimps no they had chimps and chimps are bad news they are? they'll turn on you but a capuchin I think is small enough and I think they're kind enough I think you'd be alright yeah you gotta realize the chimpanzee when you hear about the story where they done ate the woman's face and they gnawed their fingers off and things like that because you gotta realize people start feeding them human food and they get bigger than what they actually would be from just eating now they will they'll kill animals in the wild they'll eat meat you know they're survivalists but normally they're eating you know leaves and stuff like that but you start feeding them protein and they get they get all of a sudden they're 150 pounds and they get so you think about how how strong that animal is in the wild and you feeding him you're not gonna be able to handle it I don't want anything I'm more simple Ryan I want a raccoon I want a hyaline I want a hyaline like a cow or a pony or one of those pygmy goats something like that I can control he wants something simple a raccoon I ain't heard nobody have no pet raccoon simple yeah I might need to move to Tennessee because they made it real easy for you to be able to adopt raccoons so I might need to have to pick up and move to Tennessee what's up with you and the raccoon though I just want one man They just seem so fun.
1:04:35Joe Johnson:Why can't I have hyenas seem fun?
1:04:39Shannon Sharpe:Oh, yeah. Yeah, you seem fun. Yeah, he's going to be laughing. He's going to be tearing you up. No, I'm good. I don't want anything that can eat me. I don't want no part of that, Ryan.
1:04:53Joe Johnson:That's why you got to have them from when they're a cub. You got to have them from when they're a cub and they're a cub. It don't matter.
1:05:00Shannon Sharpe:Ryan, let me ask you this. what is it that people get wrong about nascar because when you hear about athletes you know you talk about football players you talk about basketball or you talk about all these sports that seems to be where you use it physical you're running you're jumping and you're doing all this what did they get wrong about being a nascar yeah yeah that's a big deflation uh that we have to deal with all the time right is we're not athletes and steven a's all over the board talking that we're not athletes stuff like that and i think people get that thought because they drive cars every day drive cars to work drive cars they're like oh it's the same thing and it's it's just it's not right like the thing i love about racing is you are trying to find the edge of control without stepping over it you know and if you step over it you're going to crash and it's going to be a really big crash so it's it's all about feel and the physical side to it uh you know we're not the biggest guys i'm a i'm a small guy most of us are pretty small guys i think every sport has its own physical attributes that you have whether it's basketball or football or soccer um you know in racing it's a lot of endurance um you know heck we raced yesterday in iowa and i lost i lost eight pounds yesterday.
1:06:23I weigh 150 pounds. I don't have a lot of weight to lose.
1:06:27Shannon Sharpe:You ain't got eight pounds to lose, right? How is that? How do y 'all lose so much weight? It's just hot. So whatever the temperature is outside add 35 to the cars. Oh, okay. So it's just hot in the cars. So it's normally... You hate Texas and Baylor? Yeah, they suck. These summer races, they get hot, man. So it's just a constant so we do a lot of endurance training yeah a lot of kind of core shoulder strength um that's kind of what it takes but um yeah i just you know and not a lot of people have done it ever because it's not as an accessible sport as other sports you know and i hate that i i wish it was more accessible to everybody to where you could go even drive a drive a go-kart right yeah everything costs money it costs money right yeah you know and i hate that because i wish that more people would have access to do it because they could really get a feel for it.
1:07:21But yeah, I just think it's, um, it's an unfortunate stigma that we have, but it's there. So.
1:07:29Shannon Sharpe:I mean, think about it. You're going, you mentioned, you and Ocho was going, but you're going, you're going 170, 180, all up there's 190 miles an hour. And before they got the restricted place, you're going over 200. I remember the claim, the cars literally take it off. Yeah. I remember, I remember those before they had those restricted plates and the down and the back is that you but you like this close. You like a rush hour traffic and you got 43 cars going on excess of one hundred and seventy miles an hour. And you're this close to the guy. Yeah. And that's another step. You know, everyone asks, you know, they're like, is it hard to be a race car driver?
1:08:06I was like, well, no, you could drive my race car if you wanted to. But the difficulties is 40 other guys being out there, you know, and trying to beat them. and race around them. So race craft, racing around guys is different than just going and making laps. So that's where it comes in. It's the same thing as shooting jumpers in the gym by yourself compared to if you've got pressure on you. It's a little bit different atmosphere.
1:08:35Shannon Sharpe:What's your favorite track? I mean, growing up, I love when guys wear the Daytona. Obviously, you start your Super Bowl. Most people, the Super Bowl, their championship is at the end of the year. Your championship is at the beginning of the year, the Daytona. And I love Talladega. And then all of a sudden, you know, you got the big tracks at Texas, and you got ended. So what's your favorite track to run? So I grew up just south of Martinsville, Virginia. Little tiny track, right? Little half-mile racetrack. You know, Daytona is two and a half miles for people watching. Martinsville is a half-mile.
1:09:08So super small. but I remember just watching races there as, as a kid, watching my dad race. Bristol's another great one, little half mile, really, really fast, cool racetrack. Looks like a big football stadium. There's stands 360 degrees around. Um, Martinsville has one of the coolest trophies that we have. It's a old grandfather clock. Uh, so the trophies is, is a pretty cool thing in our sport. You get if you win. So I'd say those two are probably my, probably my favorites, but nothing beats the Daytona 500. I mean, It is the coolest event ever.
1:09:39Shannon Sharpe:I've been. And then Charlotte, Charlotte's the new one that's come out, the last, what have you been running Charlotte for, about 30 years now? Oh, gosh, yeah, probably more than that. Yeah, probably 30, 40 years. Yeah.
1:09:52Joe Johnson:You know, I think that'd be a good thing, too, is Daytona has been one of my areas when I meet someone new and I want to do something different that I know they've never done before. I've been to Daytona a few times. Charlotte Motor Speedway and down in Homestead as well because that experience in itself for those who've never been to a NASCAR race that's something that you have to put on your bucket list and go enjoy and it's one of those things you can't explain you have to go in the environment and get a better understanding for it to actually enjoy and to see how awesome it is
1:10:27Shannon Sharpe:Hey Ryan you think I'll fit in the car? I'm 6 '8 bro, you think I'll fit in one of them cars? Yes sir, we'll get you in one yeah yeah we'll have to have you out we'll get you doing what chad did
1:10:38Joe Johnson:yeah yeah yeah i love that take him on that road course yeah please
1:10:42Shannon Sharpe:make sure hey hey ryan the guy died with the fiddle six eight guy because he's gonna poop himself when you get close to that wall when you get up on the bank with that bank hey that's what i try to do when you know chad came out i had a couple other guys yet my whole goal for that day was to try to make somebody shit themselves. That was my goal. Hey, hold up. But quiet as kept though, Ryan. Ocho he sure looks scared in that car. Now I ain't gonna lie to you, boy. I see you holding on.
1:11:12Joe Johnson:Whoa, whoa, yeah. Hey, Joe, boy, you know how fast 170 is when you're not the one driving? I already know, boy. I'm not being in control. You know what it feel like for people in the chat to give you a better example? If you're ever on an airplane, right, and you hit heavy turbines, what's the first thing you do? Because you're not in control. If I was driving, I'd be cool. I'm not. I'm leaning all the way over. I'm grabbing onto the rails the best way I can. And when we were on the oval, the big track, you were sitting right side on the right seat. You're a lot closer to that wall than I am. Yeah, you were eight.
1:11:56Joe Johnson:What'd you do? You closed your eyes? No, no, no. I was screaming, Joe. I was screaming. Yeah, my eyes wide open, boy. Matter of fact.
1:12:04Shannon Sharpe:What it's like, Blip?
1:12:05Joe Johnson:Go ahead, Ocho. I had the opportunity to drive in Daytona. You know, in Daytona, Uncle Joe, you can drive on the track in a car by yourself and you have someone in your ear. Now, they don't let you right away. They warm you up, you know, like a governor in a sense. They won't let you go over a certain mile an hour until you do a few laps. They allow you to go faster and faster. So I kind of did it a little bit, you know, but nothing to the speed and like what we went. So I'm already a speed demon in a sense. But, man, that is a different atmosphere riding with a professional driver.
1:12:41Shannon Sharpe:Man. Well, see, I'm good because I rode in the Thunderbirds. And those planes, they're going 700 miles an hour. And they got you on your side. They got you on your back. Man, when did you do the Thunderbirds?
1:12:572000 and 2006.
1:13:02Shannon Sharpe:2006. I'm good. I got to do those guys my rookie year. So it was probably 10 years ago. That was the wildest experience I have ever had in my life. Boy, look here. I mean, I feel like I had played a game. I mean, you're exhausted. After they bring you down, all that G's, and you got to be careful because you'll pass out upon taking off. They rolling that plane. I was like, oh, man. You know the worst part about what the Thunderbirds was? Is you're dying, right? You're struggling to stay awake. And these dudes are just talking to you the whole time while they're flying like normal. We're having a conversation right now.
1:13:42They're like, all right, we're going to do this. And they're yanking all that. Yep, that's exactly it. It made me feel so bad about myself.
1:13:49Shannon Sharpe:I'm like, man, stop talking.
1:13:53Shannon Sharpe:Ryan, what's it been like, you know, Michael K, Michael, Michael Jordan, obviously the probably the most recognizable sports figure in the world today outside of Messi and Ronaldo. But to have him, that guy, what he was in basketball to come to your sport and to bring that level of competition and to see what the 23XL and what is what they've been able to do. What has that meant for you? It's been huge. that Michael has shown such an interest in racing and NASCAR. Um, it's been an absolute pleasure to get to know him over the last handful of years. He's an unbelievable human being. Um, and he loves, he loves racing.
1:14:33He goes to a lot more races than people realize. Uh, he probably goes to two thirds of the races and just, and, and knows everything. I've watched some like lower series races with them, trucks and Xfinity. And he knows every single driver. he knows what the strategy is he knows pit stops he knows everything it'll it would shock you how much of a fan that he is and so i just think it is you know as a competitor and i race against his team but i i love it like i fully appreciate what he does for the sport um you know so it's a pleasure that we get to have him as an owner because i think he's doing nothing but good for our sport and like I said it's as a fan of his for a long time growing up and my dad being a fan of his it's like a dream come true just to get to know him and be able to talk to him and for him to know who I am come up to me and slap my butt and say good job like that means a lot man that's
1:15:31Shannon Sharpe:cool yeah yeah you're from Ohio Bengals or Browns you know it's it's it's been a heartbreak no matter who it is uh the last few years i say i'm more i grew up closer to cincinnati than i did um so yeah chad i'm a you know i don't know i watched i was a fan i watched the browns or bangles when we were playing with them so i i'm more of a bangles fan and i live in charlotte now so i watch bangles and carolina um but yeah yeah uh hopefully this year you know heck panthers made the playoffs last year. They actually look pretty decent. I think Bryce is getting pretty good, and I'm just hoping that Burrow can stay healthy.
1:16:18We'll see where that goes.
1:16:21Shannon Sharpe:You had some great races against Kyle Busch, and unfortunately he passed away. What do you remember most about Kyle? Yeah, man, just an unbelievable competitor. I grew up admiring Kyle, and And I grew up racing with him in lower ranks. He would come down and race local short tracks, you know, when I was super young. And I really got to watch him on Sundays and then sometimes race against him during the week. And I think Kyle is going to go down in the NASCAR history books as one of the best drivers the sport has ever seen. And I said this a while ago that there's nobody that would make you feel less adequate as a competitor than Kyle Busch because he could do things that you just didn't think were possible.
1:17:12But you'd watch him do it. You're like, man, I can do that. And you just could never do it. He's such a talented human being. And getting to know him personally was a great guy. He was a great family man. And, you know, so I just feel for his wife and his children, you know, that that he got taken away from them and he will forever be a staple of our sport. So that's been a tough one for everybody, you know, the last few months since he's passed. And it just shows you that life is fickle and you never know what's going to happen next. But he's he was an amazing competitor. And honestly, for me, it was an absolute honor to share the track with him, you know, for the years that I got to.
1:17:49because as someone I, like I said, admired growing up, that's all I wanted to do was race with those guys that I loved watching and was a fan of, and I got the privilege to do that.
1:18:01Shannon Sharpe:Ryan, we're going to get you out of here on this. What's your best story of winning a race? What do you do after you win a race? Celebrate. You celebrate a lot, man. Yeah. Beer, wine. I'm a bourbon drinker. I enjoy bourbon. My wife got me into wine. Make us Mark Woodford. I'm a big... I like Woodford. I like Elijah Craig. I like Blanton's. I like Stag. Stag's one of my favorites. Okay, yeah. If you want some high-octane, Stag's the way to go. I'm actually, tonight, I don't want to plug anything on your show, but I'm drinking my bourbon tonight, 10-runner. Okay, go ahead. Okay, I didn't want to.
1:18:49So this is our bourbon. We just made it last year. So we're just starting out. But yeah, that's been my it's been a fun project because I'm a big bourbon guy and I wanted to get into the world.
1:19:01Shannon Sharpe:You know what? I'm I'm in the spirits industry, but it's and it's a it's a lot harder than people think. People, because of the system, they think you just produce it and you can take it to the stores. It doesn't like it's not like that. You got to find distributors and you got to go to do the GSM. GSMs and you gotta be all hands on deck, man. What spirit do you have? I have a cognac called Shea Balacortier. Is it in the ABC stores? Where is it at? Yeah, absolutely. I think we're in North Carolina but guess what? We'll get you some. I'm going to send you some of mine. I appreciate you. Ryan Blaney, thank you for joining us tonight.
1:19:40Shannon Sharpe:We appreciate you staying up late. Thank you guys for having me on. I'm a big fan of all three of y 'all. So it was a pleasure to talk to y 'all. Have a good night. Thanks, Ryan. Appreciate you, man. Enjoy. Good luck the rest of the season. Appreciate it. Ryan Blaney. Honestly, honestly, honestly, no one wants to think about HIV, but there are things that everyone can do to help prevent it. Things like PrEP. PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis, and it means routinely taking prescription medicine before you're exposed to HIV to help reduce your chances of getting it. PrEP can be about 99 % effective when taken as prescribed.
