In short

NFL draft/rookie prep and defensive fit, plus sports talk about LeBron James and Victor Wembanyama’s concussion protocol in the NBA playoffs.

Guests (backgrounds)

  1. Keionte Scott: 5'11", 193-pound cornerback from the University of Miami (Canes). Pro-day 4.33s 40-yard dash; 44-inch vertical; 10-foot standing broad jump. Discusses JUCO-to-college path (JUCO “dog” mentality), versatility in nickel/slot, and tackling/physicality.
  2. Avion Terrell: 5'11", 186-pound cornerback from Clemson. Pre-draft hamstring injury reported as healed. Clemson production cited: 48 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 3 sacks, 9 breakups, 5 forced fumbles. From Atlanta; models his game after Trent McDuffie and Seahawks’ Tre Flowers/Weatherspoon.

Key claims

  • Scott: DB role is changing; he can impact run and pass, especially in the slot/nickel; mental ups/downs are hardest; “can’t duck no rec.”
  • Terrell: Clemson coaching prepared him; he’s a versatile, physical playmaker comfortable inside/outside; wants to get in the receiver’s face.

Notable examples

  • Scott’s Ohio State game: interception returned for a touchdown; slot blitz involvement.
  • Terrell: brother AJ Terrell comparisons; draft process “prepared for everything.”
  • NBA segment: Wembanyama placed in concussion protocol; protocol requires 48 hours inactivity and symptom-free benchmarks before clearance.

3:00Shannon Sharpe:He's a 5 '11", 193-pound cornerback from the University of Miami. In his pro day, he ran 4 '33". He had a 44-inch vertical with a 10-foot standing brawl jump. Here he is, Keontae Scott. Keontae, how you doing, bro? I'm doing good. How you doing? Man, I'm doing great, man. Congratulations on an unbelievable season. And now, hey, the fun part, now the haze in the barn. and just sit back and wait for that phone to ring tomorrow. So, visits, what have you heard? Who are some of the teams that you had a conversation with and they're like, we really like you, and if you're here, we're going to take you?

3:35Yeah, I would say, you know, had some time and spent a lot of time with a lot of teams, like through visits, Zooms. You know, there's a lot of interest as far as, like, the position I play and it changing, you know, as the style of the game changes now. So, you know, that's playing a big role in it. And then ultimately, you know, the versatility to the position versatility, being able to, you know, go to different spots and play different spots in different schemes in the defense. So I'm definitely excited to see, you know, how it all plays out as these next couple of days and see where it goes from there.

4:08Listen, as a GM watching you all season long, if I were to sit here and we on a Zoom and I want to draft you and I ask you a simple question, how can you help make my defense better at the at that at that specific position of db what do you give me what yeah ultimately the the the fact that you know how i can impact the the run in the past you know being a nickel you know you have to be able to do both those things you know you have to be able to fit in that run game and not be you know scared to get your feet wet at times um and then also be able to you know be out on that island and do different things so i would say just ultimately that the position is changing so i feel like you know at that position you just got to be able to be so multiple.

4:45And I feel like I've put all that on tape throughout this year of being able to do multiple things as far as fitting the run, be on the outside on that island, and then ultimately being able to fit that run.

4:59Chad Johnson:Hey, Keontae, hey, what's up, bro? What's going on, Joe? Slow motion. Hey, tell me something. DB, bro, what's the hardest thing about being a DB? I would just say, to be honest, I would just say the ups and downs of it. you know, you could make the game winning stop on a play and be that guy. And then you can give up the catch to, you know, on third down and be the worst DB in the rural. So, you know, I would just say it's just the how the hard times come with it, man. You know, the ups and downs. And then the fact that, you know, you can give up a catch on third down and have to go first down the next play.

5:34And they can come right back at you. So I would just say, you know, the the mental the mental part of it is the hardest part.

5:41Shannon Sharpe:Bro, I'm looking at your stats. This is very impressive. You had 13 tackles for loss. You had five sacks, two interceptions, both for touchdowns, and five breakups. And I noticed they brought you a lot. Was it Ohio State? I think it was Ohio State. You got to pick six, right? Yeah, that was Ohio State. And they brought you with some pressure. Do you like it? Because you said you could play out. So obviously, they bring in the slot blitz a lot. You like playing slot or you like playing outside more? I'm like in the middle. You know, I pride myself on being a DB. So, you know, you ain't never limit myself to one thing.

6:17But I would say ultimately just the slot is just the slot is just so fun with just how much you're involved in the defense. You know, whether that be, you know, in the run fit or and having a pass responsibility. So you kind of like in both roles. And for a player like me, it kind of just keeps me, you know, active as much as I want to move my eyes and be involved. You know, it kind of just keeps me active and I can see things.

6:38Shannon Sharpe:That's a lot hard because you got a lot of you got to worry about the scale across all the way across That's what man. I'm gonna tell you right now The boys be on the outside. I wouldn't be back there at safety. You asked them go getting that new one. It's a whole different story I'm just Your path to the NFL Juco Auburn Miami, how do you think that shape? How did you think like going to a Juco? Because obviously I'm sure you had a plans to maybe play at a major universally like you did at Auburn and the U. But how did going to JUCO, how did that path that you're taking to get to the NFL, how has that shaped the person that you are currently?

7:17Yeah, it just turned me into a dog, man. I mean, all my JUCO products will say the same thing. Like, you know, you get there and, man, it's just long days and long nights, man. There's questions of not knowing if you're going to make it. And then you get there and there's the brotherhood of things. and you get in there with guys, you know, all different types of stories, different backgrounds, and ultimately you guys come together and, you know, build that Juco bond. It's something that, you know, I still talk to my Juco teammates today, to this day, like, it's just the things we went through together, just not knowing, like, how we were going to eat, you know, sometimes just random different things, and then ultimately, you know, you play another competition, and when you're playing another competition, man, that Juco world is like, it's just a different ball game.

7:54So, you know, I'm just, ultimately, you just shape me, you know, it makes me real appreciative. Like the small things, like, you know, getting gloves and cleats and stuff. Like I'm super appreciative to have a hot tub and, you know, all those different things. So it just, you know, as soon as I got to college, I was just super grateful for all the things and never let those things, you know, kind of go over my head. So it kind of just shaped me to who I am, man. It kind of made me, gave me that dog style. That too, from me getting offers in JUCO, a lot of people don't know, like I spoke on it before.

8:20Like when you get offers in JUCO, you know, that Target get on your back now. Everybody looking at it and want a piece of that boy with them offers. So I would just say, you know, to me, it just turns you into a dog. You got to stay on your toes. You got to squabble hard, as I would say. Right.

8:36Chad Johnson:Hey, what do you like playing better? Your press coverage? You like playing press? I really like all for real. That way, you know, you can see some things. See everything. Yeah, read the tempo, the release, kind of get a tail on routes based on how they come out. Okay. Hey, your journey is similar to mine. obviously going from JUCO, then making it to being able to get to the big stage, to be able to showcase your skills. As a child growing up, obviously your dream, I'm sure it was, to be able to play in the NFL. Today, right now, with that journey almost ending and a new journey starting, what has the process for you been like?

9:10Has it been everything you thought it would be? Yeah, definitely. I mean, you know, a lot of bumps and different obstacles along the way, but I feel like they all shaped me to get to this point now. And now I'm just at this point now where, you know, constantly throughout this process and even throughout this year of 2025 of just staying at one level I feel like that you know helped me you know go so far of not you know getting too up not getting too down you know not worrying about the noise around me kind of just staying focused on the task at hand and and that's helped me you know prevail you know as there's things going on as things you know keep increasing and you know um things you know keep getting better for me it's kind of just allows me to just stay focused on you know the task at hand so I can't kind of can't worry about what's going on for real I just can't feel it I'm kind of numb to it of just you know just trying to stay focused and stay on level.

9:53Right. If you were to put your GM hat on, right, and you were to give yourself a comp, if you were to be Mel Kiper, right, and we got drafted going right now, who would your comp be right now in the NFL that you would somewhat compare your game to or you play your... Yeah, I would definitely have to, you know, shout out Jalen Petrie. I feel like, you know, throughout my time, I've watched him a lot in that slot. At my time at Auburn, we kind of came in the same family defensive-wise, so watched a lot about him and just the way he plays the game is just the way, you know, the DB should play, especially in that nickel and that slot and just flying around and just being physical and then, you know, finding that ball to me.

10:27Shannon Sharpe:What led you to the U? I like that. To the U? Oh, me and my guy, Christopher. What do you mean? Me and my dog, Christopher Ball. Me and my dog, Christopher Ball, like this, for real, for real. Like, that's really my dog, for real. Like, we just built a connection through my time at Ajuco, actually, about the before I came out. I was going to go to Oregon, and that was when we built our relationship there, you know, even with the Cuban coffee stuff, you know, if you know, you know. Shout out to my dog, Christopher Ball. But, yeah, no, that's just – we just built a relationship there. And then ultimately, you know, when you build great relationships and, you know, you're a genuine person, you know, things are aligned in the back end.

10:56So it all came into a close, you know, once I hit the portal again this, you know, past spring. And then, you know, Coach Christopher reached out and was able to build that. And it was kind of like we just recouped our time that we missed and, you know, was able to just jump right in. And it was kind of like we didn't have to take too much adjusting.

11:13Shannon Sharpe:You know 64 tackles is a lot of tackles for a corner. Yeah, yeah. But I'm sure it shows that you are willing to participate in the run game. A lot of guys, and that's a valuable commodity, is that there are going to be times you're going to be forced. There are going to be a time that you're going to have to get the guy down, or it's going to be a much larger game than maybe what it already was, or maybe even a touchdown. Why do you take so much pride in being able to get the guy on the ground? Yeah, you just can't duck no rec, man. You can't duck no rec. No rec. You ain't ducking no rec around here.

11:43Shannon Sharpe:I like that. Yeah, you can't duck no rec. I would just say it's that. Yeah, it's just definitely a one-two thing, you know, at the end of the day. And I just feel like that's something I've built over the time in my game of, you know, kind of, you know, bringing that mindset of, you know, it's either me or him, you know, type style. So, you know, just bringing that aggression to it and ultimately just helps you play fast and play physical. That's one thing about it, too. When you go back to the table as a DB, you know, it's one thing having to cover. But when you when you can add that variable, being able to come up and tackle and come to the goddamn party.

12:12Man, listen, there's nothing they can say. there's nothing they can say when you add that when you add that to your game man I think about you ever watch Nate Clements play before I'm not sure if you know about Nate Clements I watch all the slot guys in the league especially as a man he was big though Ocho yeah he was big hold on remember Antoine Antoine Winfield the senior man listen in the run game where the fuck oh my god What a boy, we're coming to the party, boy.

12:47Shannon Sharpe:Let me ask you this, because I'm sure they probably ask you this question. You're going to be 24 years of age, so you're a little bit more mature than some of the other guys. But like you said, you had to take the JUCO route. So when they ask you, it's like, okay, what are some of the things they might have said, may or may not have said about your age coming out? Yeah, ultimately, to be honest with you, I haven't really got a lot of questions about it. To be honest, I feel like it's been more so, you know, if I can understand concepts in this defense and different things like that, mostly talking a lot of ball teams and then ultimately, you know, talking, you know, past experiences and my journey also on, you know, what I felt like I learned from my journey and stuff like that.

13:25I really haven't really talked too much age. It's been mostly ball. And, you know, that's kind of how I've been priding myself on it. I feel like, you know, in today's game, man, I mean, you see guys from all different age ranges, you know, like I say, man, you can't do no talking on the net. you got to get in the field and do something. I don't care how old you is. You got to get in the field and do something. It don't even matter about all that.

13:46Shannon Sharpe:Let me ask you this. You said you like to play off. So are you a formation read guy? You off, you watching the quarterback, you watching. Because a lot of, because we look at, I mean, it's, I would say down in distance. Okay, where are they down in distance? Where are they on the field? What is the formation? What does this guy like to do? So, I mean, I know it's a lot, but how do you break it down? Yeah, process it based on, you know, first you got to, you know, key the down and distance, you know, got to know what down it is, you know, like you said. And then ultimately, like based on the split, you know, the receiver, that could kind of help you out.

14:23That's kind of something that's in my process. And then ultimately knowing who you got. A lot of things people don't know about that slot is you think you might get that slot the whole game, but then to the receiver one in that slot and he's off the ball a little bit or they're bunched up a little bit. So you get all types of guys and all types of different things. You just got to know the skill set. And then also, you know, got to know where your help is, where you can be beat at, where you can be beat at, understanding that and then, you know, applying that into your technique of, you know, how you're doing it and then just using the defense kind of to help you in that slot.

14:52That's kind of what you got to do.

14:55Shannon Sharpe:I like that. That's what makes DB so hard because you got so much. Hey, you got to dance running backwards while that guy's running forward. And he knows where he's going. You think you might know, okay, this is what he likes to do. Look at his splash. Notice the split. He's two yards outside the numbers. He's doing a lot of things. I mean, he might be on the square. I don't know. He might run that bang. No, for real. And you got to be able to process that like this, though. Yeah, very fast. Because if you hesitate, you beat. And then another thing about that, another thing people don't know. He running 4-3 back when he running 4-3 forward, but you turn him swivel those hips.

15:30Shannon Sharpe:He up out of there. Yeah, then another thing people don't know, you might have a run responsibility also. So why you still got a responsibility in that path? So you got to know both and keep both and be able to, you know, it's just, it takes a lot, but it's definitely a fun position and I love playing it. Are you down here? No, I'm back home in San Diego. Oh, yeah, yeah.

15:49Chad Johnson:Okay, okay, okay. Hey, hey, you still getting at it? Oh, yeah, for sure. I mean, every coach probably brought that up, you know, just past experience of rookies getting to minicamp and just being out of shape and stuff. So definitely been working. I can't go up there and do nothing like that. Hey, it'll make it a lot easier too, bro, if you're already going there in shape versus going in there trying to get in shape. And it alleviates injuries too. So keep that grind going, bro. Oh, you know what?

16:17Shannon Sharpe:Malachi Tony, lining up against him in the slot. Because here's the guy to age. He's a joystick. He all over the place. So, boy, yeah, we went at it, man. I mean, I feel like from the time I got there, we just collided and we worked and we kind of built our relationship based on that. You know, he's a guy that, you know, he's out there. He's trying to do his thing. And, you know, that's something I just respected out of, you know, just from a young buck. Like, he ain't ducking. Like, like I said, he ain't ducking. No wreck. Like, he want that smoke. So I feel like that's just the type of style I am too.

16:48So I'm like, you want that smoke? I want that smoke. So we just colliding. But, man, he's just going to – I just – I can't even put into words, you know, what he's capable of doing, you know, with his remaining years in college and then ultimately getting to see him again once he, you know, gets up in the league. But, man, he's just a great player. You know, he's growing and his game still has so much more he can, you know, tap into. So I'm excited about that. And then, you know, just us getting to go together, you know, he's helped me so much. You know, I feel like throughout this year, just, you know, I feel like if you're not moving like 10, man, you ain't doing enough.

17:17So I feel like now I'm just, yeah, super, you know, proud of him and grateful for getting that opportunity of, you know, going against that. That's my dog, man. We locked in for sure. Hey, hypothetically. Hypothetically speaking, right? I knew you was going to go there. I knew you was going to go there. Listen, listen. Hypothetically speaking, we lied and we did 10 rounds, right? How many times you think you're going to stop me? Like realistic. I'm going to be doing it, y 'all. You're going to have to move for real. Yeah, no, for sure. No, I'm saying you're going to have to really do it, though.

17:59Because I ain't going to play with you. right that's what I'm talking about okay well you know one thing when I'm on that field I don't play no games yeah no for sure boy hey you gonna put your hands on it jumper cables that's my coach I'm gonna put them jumper cables right here what latch on hey you ever been the jumper cables on the wrong side

19:56Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Ocho, you got Joe fired up. Joe said he don't give a damn. Damn. Okay. Hey, I hope - Talking about what he don't like.

20:04Chad Johnson:Yeah, I give a damn what you like. Oh, I see. That's why he talking like that. Yeah, Joe, Joe gets some of that sauce up in it. Hey, you got that liquor. He got that liquor. I'm on that Laporte here tonight, yeah. I already know. Hey, that's that liquor talking, honk. He don't really mean what he's saying. He don't mean what he's saying. He don't mean what he's saying, you know. Damn, Joe, you should let me know. I feel like I'm going to put it with you, too. I had to, you know, it make the conversation go a little better. Okay. Okay. I like that. What, Ocho, what? No, I'm just saying. I'm saying it's the liquor talking.

20:36That ain't no liquor. He ain't in his right mind right now, Ocho. He ain't in his right mind. You know, yeah, you know, hey, he radio right now.

20:44Chad Johnson:I tell you what, hey, when we do get together, I don't want you copying all these pleas and shit, because ain't nobody going to be trying to hear it. Joe, listen, listen. Let me tell you something, Joe. When it comes to competing at anything, especially 101, but my name is on this, Joe. I'm not playing with you. All right. My name is on this. You think people think I'm going to embarrass myself on camera? Man, I'm going to do your ass in it, boy. Pause.

21:07Shannon Sharpe:Stop playing with me, man. All right, we got a very special guest joining us. He's a 5 '11", 186-pound cornerback out of ATL. Y 'all know what it is. AT. There he is. He had 48 tackles, four and a half tackles for loss, three sacks, nine breakups, five forced fumbles. Here he is from Clemson, Avion Terrell. Avion, how you doing, bro? I'm doing good. How you doing? Man, I'm doing amazing, man. Thanks for joining us tonight. Yes, sir. What's up, twin? What's up, twin? What's happening? I'm right here, man. You know just doing what I do. Hold on just a second for us, Avion. Okay.

21:50Iso Joe Johnson:I'm John Green. You may know me as the author of The Fault in Our Stars, and now I guess also as the co-host of The Away End, a brand new world soccer podcast. I'm Daniel Alarcon, a writer and journalist, and John and I have known each other since we were kids. My first World Cup was Mexico 86. I was nine years old. I watched every game, and I fell in love. On our new podcast, The Away End, we'll share with you the magic of international football, all leading up to the 2026 World Cup. For us, soccer, football, is a story we've shared for over 30 years, since Daniel was the star player on our high school soccer team.

22:25Iso Joe Johnson:Very debatable. And I was their most loyal and sometimes only fan. I love this game. I love its history, its hope, its heartbreak, and above all, its beauty. Together, we'll find out why, of all the unimportant things, football, soccer, is the most important. Listen to The Away End with Daniel Alarcon and John Green on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

23:11Iso Joe Johnson:With all the snacks and drinks. Sidebar, why did you get hard seltzer instead of beer? Oh, they had a BOGO. Well, then you got it. Do you want a white collar or something here? Just hit it. What are y 'all doing? Microphones? Are you making a rap album? Oh, I would. I would buy it. Cuts through the defense like a hot knife through sponge cake. That sounds delicious. Oh, you're lucky I'm not a drug addict. You're lucky I'm not an alcoholic. You're lucky I'm not a killer. I love this team, and I'm really trying to be a figure in their lives that they can rely on. Oh.

23:49Iso Joe Johnson:Listen to Soccer Moms on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Daniel Jeremiah. And I'm Greg Rosenthal. And this is 40s and Free Agents. The games may be over, but the NFL never stops. This is my favorite part of the calendar. Yeah, mine too, Greg. Free agency, the combine, the NFL draft, pro days, trades. This is where teams reshape their future. This is where Daniel Jeremiah makes his money. On 40s and free agents, we break down every move that actually matters. From my draft evaluations, mock drafts, and team fits. To my top 101 free agents and how real rosters are built, cap space, contracts, and all the tough decisions included.

24:32Iso Joe Johnson:You got quarterbacks on the move. We got teams rebuilding. It's hope season. Yeah, absolutely. It's hope season. We'll tell you what's real, what's noise, and what it means for your favorite team. Smart analysis, real conversations every week. I don't know about the smart, but definitely analysis. Listen to 40s and free agents on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

24:57Iso Joe Johnson:American soccer is about to explode. The World Cup is coming. Ramos sending on the Army. Stewart, the chip. Score! USA! I'm Tab Ramos. I'm Tom Boak. On our podcast, Inside American Soccer, you'll get the real storylines. I'm not worried about Pulisic. I'm not worried about Balogun. I'm not worried about McKinney. My only concern is what happens in the back. The biggest decisions. You're going to look at stats and numbers. He has no shot at making this World Cup team. And the truth about the U.S. national team. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals.

25:41Iso Joe Johnson:The World Cup is almost here. Experience it all with us. USA! USA! Listen to Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tab Ramos on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

26:04Iso Joe Johnson:And we've got a new show called the 1021 Podcast. I'm taking you behind the scenes on how I became one of Twitch's most popular streamers. We also love sports. And with the World Cup right around the corner, we'll be breaking down the biggest storylines ahead of the big tournament here in the USA. Listen to the 1021 Podcast on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

26:32Shannon Sharpe:Oh, okay. Yeah, we're trying to connect this camera, guys. I'm good. I'm good. You good? Yeah, I'm good. Okay, okay. Thanks for joining us, man. We really appreciate that. It's kind of been tough. I mean, going through the pre-draft process, you've been dealing with a hamstring injury. Are you recovered? How has that been? Yeah, I'm recovered. I'm good. I'm ready. You ready? I feel good. I mean, yes, sir.

27:04Chad Johnson:Yes, sir.

27:05Shannon Sharpe:I'm good. I'm good. Now, the question is, is that, you know, you've received a lot of praise. It could possibly be the biggest steal in the draft because of the injury kind of held you back. But you got a first round. You had a first round grave before the injury. So what's been the biggest key? Because, you know, playing at Clemson, playing top-notch guys, there's an expectation level when you come out that, hey, you're going to perform at a high level. So what's that been like?

27:36Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I'd just say, you know, just going to Clemson,

27:39Chad Johnson:the way Dabo coached, you know, always had us prepared for anything. So, you know, I'm ready for it.

27:45Shannon Sharpe:I'm ready to get that mini-cab and ball. I'm ready for this. Well, you know, big bro has already kind of got a standard out there. Everybody knows what he is. He's been to a Pro Bowl. He's one of the better corners in the league. so you automatically, like, there's going to be the comparison, be it fair or unfair. How have you been able to handle that? Because you kind of, you know, you're the younger brother. I went through the very same thing, having an older brother that was a very good player. How have you been able to deal with that and carve out your own path?

28:16Chad Johnson:Yeah, I'll say it started, all that talk started when I was like 10th grade. You know, he used to make me mad. He used to make me mad at first and make me mad. But when I got to college, man, I'm my old self. I'm out here. AJ can't help me on this field in college football with 80 ,000 in the crowd. I'm out there making my own play.

28:34Iso Joe Johnson:So I'm my son.

28:38Chad Johnson:I don't really get mad at it no more. I just had to keep it going.

28:45Shannon Sharpe:Coach O?

28:49Draft process. The draft process, this journey you've gone through so far, what has it been like? Like, has it been everything you dreamed of? Obviously, having a brother that's already went through it. Now you've experienced it yourself. Has it been everything you thought it would be? It's a blessing.

29:03Chad Johnson:You know, just living this dream. Dreaming the kid. You know, wanting to go through the process, talk to teams, go combine, and do work. So, it's definitely a blessing. It's good. It's good. I love it. Yeah. Hey, as a kid from Atlanta, bro, how you end up in Clemson? How they let you get out of here? Man, them boys, them teams ain't want me in Georgia, man. Sweeney did, though. Yeah. Yeah, Sweeney wanted me, for sure.

29:36Shannon Sharpe:So how has it been? The best part about it, I think, for me, is that going through this process, I had an older brother had just gone through the process a couple years earlier. You have AJ, he's gone through the process. How has he helped you go through this process?

29:55Chad Johnson:Yeah, it's definitely good. All the stuff I'm going through, he done been through, so I can ask him those little questions, and he tell me the thing is right away. And it helped a lot. I feel like I was very prepared at every meeting. I was prepared for everything that I was going into, and I feel like that's what stood out.

30:15Chad Johnson:And who you model your game after, bro? My brother, Trent McDuffie, and Weatherspoon from the Seahawks. Oh, spoon. Hey, that's some good comp. I like that. That's some good comp. I like that. I like that. I like that. Hey, when you do play, whether it's on the inside or whether it's in the slot or whether it's on the outside, you prefer man to man or you prefer playing off? What you like? Oh, I want to get in their face. Mmm. Ooh. Mmm. That's what I'm talking about. Yeah, we believe it.

30:50Shannon Sharpe:I like it. I mean, considering the quarterbacks that you got, they'd like to be right. I'm here. Yeah. I'm here.

31:00Chad Johnson:Sure. Sure. Sure.

31:04Shannon Sharpe:Of the team that you've talked about. No free releases. No free releases. No free. Do you have a – so growing up, you're from Georgia. I don't know if the Falcons were your favorite team. But who was your favorite team growing up, and do you have a favorite team? You like man, this would be an ideal landing spot or you just like a whoever drafts me they get the damn good football player right

31:29Chad Johnson:Yeah, my favorite team growing up I had Two heads for cheese and two cheese. I was a 49er fan. I was a cowboy's man growing up Okay,

31:43okay, okay, okay, okay prime, okay Yeah, that's why. That's why. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Joe, why you saying like that? Like something wrong with you? I mean, what you mean? Joe, y 'all ain't one shit in 30 years. Joe, what you mean why I said that?

32:00Chad Johnson:Damn, that's how you acted? The man said that was his squad. That was one of his squad. Nah, he said it was his squad because of Prime. He's not really a Cowboys fan. He a Deion Sanders fan. It's a difference. Nah, it's a difference. Wow. He hating Joe. That man, big hatin'. Boy, stay hatin' on us. I don't know what's wrong with him. I love the Cowboys. Matter of fact, I don't love them. You see what they're doing to George Pickens like I told you they was gonna do, but that's another conversation.

32:27Shannon Sharpe:So what's this process been like for you, AJ? I mean, obviously, you know, your career is a wrap, and now you go through it. You go to the combine. You do all the things. Obviously, you're dealing with a little hamstring injury, but you say that's... Avion, excuse me. You said that that is healed, but what has this process been like? Has it been everything that you thought it would be?

32:50Chad Johnson:Absolutely. Everything I thought it would be, just me talking to the team, the process, the mindset I had going into it. So, yeah, everything I thought it would be, like, everything is the same. It's fun. It's a fun moment. It's a blessing. It's a blessing. It's something I dreamed. Like I said, I dreamed that since I was a kid, so I was very prepared, and it's been fun for sure.

33:16Shannon Sharpe:Are you going to be in Atlanta with family? So where are you going to watch the draft? You're not in Pittsburgh, are you? Yeah, I'm in Atlanta. We're going to be somewhere in Atlanta tomorrow. Okay, you're going to be with family and friends. Okay. You got something big planned? I mean, you got the neighborhood coming over you? They putting – y 'all skewing? What's going on? Yeah, I got my family flying down from New York coming.

33:41Chad Johnson:Some of my pupils coming. Just celebrating, man. Celebrating something. It's big. Okay.

33:49Shannon Sharpe:Hey, go ahead on Joe. Nah, I was waiting on Joe.

33:53Chad Johnson:Go ahead, Joe. Hey, let's say for all the NFL teams that's watching or potentially could draft you, what kind of player, what kind of kid they getting, bro? Again, first of all, they getting a humble kid with great work ethic. They getting a playmaker and a very versatile player, Somebody who feel comfortable inside. No matter where you put me, I'm ready for it. So, again, one of those type players. All right, Ben.

34:24Shannon Sharpe:What high school did you go to? Wesleyan High School, man. Oh, you went to the lake? Okay, you went to the damn Pac-Man?

34:31Chad Johnson:Oh, yeah. Nate Wiggins, AJ. Yeah. Oh, they got some dogs coming back.

34:37Shannon Sharpe:Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They got a good girl basketball team, Raven Johnson and South Carolina. you with the west lake yeah west lake got a squad now yeah for sure there's a lot of people that have walked through them always okay okay hey hey wait wait wait where your brother at man yeah well he with me yeah tell him stop ducking this work man man. Tell him to stop ducking his work, man.

35:10Chad Johnson:Yeah, man. Step up, man.

35:14Shannon Sharpe:That's it, man. Step up. Well, Aby, I wish you the best of luck, man. Congratulations. Hey, one journey ends, another journey begins. Get healthier. Hey, because you got minicamp. You get drafted on Thursday, you're probably going to have minicamp either this week or next week. Get ready to go out there and show them that. Hey, you know what? Y 'all got a skill in the draft. No matter where they take you, prove to them they got a skill in the draft.

35:38Chad Johnson:Yes, sir. For sure. Good luck, bro. Congratulations. Appreciate y 'all. Appreciate y 'all. Hey,

35:51boy, it got me thinking about my DB days, huh? You played DB too? Yeah, Joe. Hey, Joe, listen to me. Joe, you know when I was at Oregon State, right? I went to Oregon State as a DB. They had to move me to receiver because the db room was full and then when i got to cincinnati they wanted me to play db in cincinnati but the db room was full in cincinnati and then they moved me to receiver so that's how it happened that's how i ended up playing receiver i was a db first you was a db in high school yeah i was a db i was actually safety you know joe you play you play all positions so i was a safety and i was a quarterback joe here's the thing this is how you know you're

36:31Shannon Sharpe:because if he was like that, it don't matter if the DB room full. If you like that, guess what? Somebody else got to move. If you him it then. If you him it then. Hey, Joe. What's up? I was him on every season. Exactly, that's why they put me there. You played the right position. I know, but Joe, this is what he don't understand, Joe, is my footwork was so good, right? Think about if you ever seen me run routes, right, Joe? I'm probably the only person, Joe, run full speed and stop on a dime. Boom, on two nickels, right? But I could do the same thing going back with Joe. You slew footed. I could do the same thing going back with Joe.

37:09Oh, Joe, you slew footed. That's what made me so special, Joe. You slew footed. I know. That's how I'm able to stop like that. Huh?

37:17Shannon Sharpe:What are you talking about? So you already, because you already planting on the teeth. Because you got them sleuths, they already turned out. So you already doing the teeth, Steph.

37:30Iso Joe Johnson:I'm John Green. You may know me as the author of The Fault in Our Stars, and now I guess also as the co-host of The Away End, a brand new world soccer podcast. 42:13but uh yo before we uh we was talking about um we was talking about uh lebron and and and you

42:21Shannon Sharpe:we were talking is like, just think, if he was still a number one option, he'd still be giving you 25, 26 a night. Yeah.

42:30Chad Johnson:Oh, yeah, he can do that. He can do that.

42:32Shannon Sharpe:That's why I'm not going to be surprised if he plays at least two more seasons. I'm not.

42:37Chad Johnson:Oh, yeah. I'm not. Hold on. Speaking of two more seasons, Uncle Joe, I don't know the situation with his younger son. His younger son. How much time, how much longer until he gets an opportunity to play?

42:50Shannon Sharpe:so he so he could come out next year next year for him would be 24 so if he had if he were to come out he would be playing with lebron in his 25th season if lebron was still around and you said lebron is going to play two more years i believe he can i'm not saying that he will i'm saying based on what i've seen he can right yeah i i think i think that's his end goal for some reason. I don't know why. I think playing with Bronny is one thing, but I think achieving and reaching another feat that probably wouldn't ever be done is being able to play in the NBA with both of my sons.

43:25Chad Johnson:Being able to say that would be an amazing feat. So I really think that might be the end goal for him.

43:31Shannon Sharpe:I mean, he averaged 20, 25 points a game. He had 20 seasons of at least 21 seasons at least 25. 20 seasons at least 25. He's had 23 straight seasons of at least 20. That's crazy. And he's still giving you the rebounds and the assists.

43:54Chad Johnson:Yeah, he's still efficient, bro. He's still effective, efficient, plays the game the right way. His IQ for the game is out of this world, bro. He knows how to be effective. No matter what position you put him in, he knows how to be effective. And it's showing. And then when you think about it, in the playoffs, Ocho, I'm I'm going to put him above 25 points a game because, you know, you're always going to have a day or two, maybe even three sometimes of rest. You ain't going to play no back-to-back. You feel me?

44:24Shannon Sharpe:That's true.

44:25Chad Johnson:And if we know anything, that's going to play into LeBron's hands the more rest he had because he's going to have to log in some minutes.

44:32Shannon Sharpe:Oh, yeah, because he played 39 last night. I looked up, and I was like, he was at 27 at the end of the third quarter, and I was telling the guy that was sitting next to him, I said, they can't take him out. I said he's going to have to play the whole 12 minutes, which will put him at 39. You look at Luke. Luke Canard played 42. Rui played 43.

44:55Chad Johnson:They can do it. They bounce back on B. They can bounce back a lot. Yeah, yeah.

44:59Shannon Sharpe:I mean, hey, you see why all the stuff that he has to do. I mean, he's doing the maintenance. I mean, as soon as it's over, I mean, he got ice on his back. He got ice on both knees. He's getting his workout in. Mike Macias and the other people are just working his body, just trying to do everything they possibly can to get that body recovered ASAP. He's probably getting a protein shake in him as soon as he's off the court. Two hours later, he's going to probably eat a solid meal because they probably left last night to head to an OKC. They might have left today, Joe.

45:34Chad Johnson:No, they probably left today. They play tomorrow.

45:37Shannon Sharpe:They play tomorrow, Friday. OKC.

45:40Chad Johnson:I mean, Houston.

45:41Shannon Sharpe:I mean, he used to go to Houston Lakers. They play Friday. What would Aiden look like in person?

45:53I know he didn't have a good game like he had the first game. Them hands, man.

45:57Shannon Sharpe:Them hands, man. I just want you to see you take mine. I ain't using them no more. They done served their perfect year. Take these 57-year-old hands.

46:10Chad Johnson:hey look man you you gotta continue to big him up though if you the lakers because you're gonna need him yeah you're gonna need him bro you're gonna need i know he he probably didn't do a whole hell of a lot last night but you're gonna need that man you know what i mean like i don't know if marcus smart gonna be as fast as he's been you know i want to believe luke canard can continue

46:33Shannon Sharpe:I mean, Lou Kennard has been so efficient. 8 of 13. Marcus Mark was efficient. 8 of 13. Rui was 5 of 10. I mean, Jerry Vanderbilt had to happen in and out. LaRabia. He kind of got – I mean, sometimes, I mean, he's like a blind dog in a meehive. Bro, he just be all over the place. I mean, I love his effort. I love his hustle, Joe. But I'm like, bro, calm down.

47:01Chad Johnson:Yeah, I agree with you. They got to come. Hey, listen, I think it's a lot that's going unnoticed. Obviously, we talk about the Lakers' defense, which I think has been great considering the fact that Houston averages 115 points a game. Okay, Ocho, and they've been limited to, what, 90-some points every game?

47:22Shannon Sharpe:Yep.

47:24Chad Johnson:I mean, that's a hell of a feat in itself because you're cutting a lot of those guys' water off. you know if you the Lakers you cut a lot of those guys water off during the game bro you daring them dudes to beat you and they can't I'm gonna be honest with you from what I see outside of

47:39Shannon Sharpe:Kevin Durant I don't think they got nobody else unless you goon goes off for like 22 23 and 10 12

47:47Chad Johnson:no yeah I don't even I don't I can see him having a good game in Houston but he it ain't it just don't seem that effective to me I'm gonna be honest man you ought to see how

47:59Shannon Sharpe:he dislodged people when he bang them. Because that's what he's trying to do. He's just trying to dislodge people and shoot that soft hook over either shoulder. But he a load, man. He a load.

48:13Chad Johnson:Yeah, boy, they gonna need him, boy. They gonna need him.

48:18Shannon Sharpe:But people talk about they need to put, we want to see KD and LeBron go at each other. So what, they can both get tired and be nothing?

48:29Chad Johnson:KD about to be 38

48:31Shannon Sharpe:LeBron about to be 41 gonna be heading to force 42 and you want them to play 39-40 minutes and guard each other those days are long gone guys if y 'all didn't see this in 2012 if y 'all didn't see this in 2013, 15, 16 17, 18 y 'all might as well go and kiss the baby

48:51Chad Johnson:yeah I mean it will be moments throughout the game But would they guard each other like they did in 2020?

48:58Shannon Sharpe:That ain't happening. Nah. Uh-uh. Nah. That ain't happening. No, sir. So, Lakers 2-0, whole serving home. Let's see if they can go to Houston and steal a victory. Victory with Minyama was placed in NBA's concussion protocol after Tumlin faced first on the court last night in the playoff loss to Portland. Under league guidelines, a player in concussion protocol must have at least 48 hours of inactivity and recovery and then hit several benchmarks without symptoms before being cleared to play. A player must undergo neurological testing and receive a final clearance from a team doctor in consultation with lead concussion protocol director.

49:44Shannon Sharpe:Hey, so he got 48 hours. NFL player get about 48 seconds, Ochoa. I got your fingers up. How many fingers I got up on Joe? Two? All right, get your ass in there.

49:55Chad Johnson:Two? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I thought about that.

50:00Shannon Sharpe:It seems improbable that Wimby would be cleared to play by them, but Mitch Johnson, the head coach, wouldn't speculate on the status. The protocol is the protocol. We'll just follow it. It is, and everyone else does, and plan accordingly. They can't beat Wimby without Wimby, guys.

50:17Chad Johnson:You know what? They can't. and it goes to show you how fragile the game can be by one injury it could change a whole series you know what i mean like at one point we thought the spurs was gonna be unstoppable they looked unstoppable here but then when we go down now you don't got no interior presence you guys just going there laying the ball up dunking the box like man like a totally different team okay ojo they do

50:46Shannon Sharpe:I mean, when I looked, they were up 99 to 92. And the next thing I know, what you call them going on a 9-0 run, and they got the lead.

51:02Chad Johnson:Hey, and go ahead and get that man in his props, man. Get Scoot Henderson in his props.

51:06Shannon Sharpe:He balled his ass out last night.

51:09Chad Johnson:Hey, hey. And what a lot of people don't remember, Uncle Ocho, is when Scoot came out in the draft, if it was between him and Wimby who everybody was talking about was going to be the number one pick. Yeah. Until we seen Wimby and we seen what he could do. But I think Scoot has just been kind of flying under the radar. He's dealt with some injuries in his early career. But, man. Oh, he can play. When I tell you he looked like a game changer in this series. He nice, bro. Hey, listen. He playing like this on the road. I'm like, damn, if he get back home, if he can give him this at home or better, Spurs in trouble, man.

51:44You saw what he shot for, Joe? What he shot? That boy was 11 for 17, man.

51:50Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, he balled out. Oh, yeah, he get money. For a nice 31. All things being equal, of all the number ones, I'm not so sure. There might only be two that would go in front of Wimby. Maybe Kareem and LeBron. Who? I'm not sure there's any other number ones overall. Maybe Shaq, I don't know, Shaq. But you look at Wimby and how skilled he is, his ability to shoot the three. Now, if you put him in Shaq's time, Shaq's coming out. Because ain't nobody. He's shooting three and don't nobody care about that. But in today's game, I'm not so sure Kareem would go over him in today's game because he don't shoot the three.

52:33Shannon Sharpe:There's a premium on three. Yeah, man, look here. Guys passing up layups. Reed Adams had a layup yesterday and kicked it out for a three. I mean let that sink in guys are passing up layups guys are passing up middies in order to kick out for a three that's where the game is right now so Wimby and he can shoot the three he can catch and shoot it he can pull up and shoot it he can put it on the floor get to the middie obviously he can get all the way to the rim and just get on his chippin's toes and dunk it on your ass

53:08Chad Johnson:right Right, right. He's a different animal. I agree. But without him, I don't think they got a chance to win either. I just, I see in some of these series, bro, I just see so many guys taking ill-advised shots. And I'm like, bro, this ain't the regular season. Like, some of these shots you taking in the playoffs, man, we can't have them. You know what I mean? Like, if we on teams, you're like, hey, bro, we can't have that right now. You know what I mean? It's like there's a lot of young cats who playing in this playoff. and they're asked to, you know, play huge minutes. And some of them just – you can kind of see it just from watching.

53:45Chad Johnson:You can see that they don't really understand it. You know what I mean?

53:48Shannon Sharpe:And I'm watching. I'm like, bro, that was a terrible shot. And then you wonder why the guy laid it up on the other end. Because you took a bad shot, and ain't none of your guys in position. A long rebound, one pass, boom, guy laid it up on the other end. And then you look at it around like, no, don't look around. You effed it up. Yeah, yeah.

54:11Chad Johnson:It ain't but a couple guys that I've seen in this postseason, and obviously they are elite, who can really get in that paint and obviously know how to make a decision, a good decision, where we get a great shot, a foul, or a bucket. You know what I mean? Like guys who really know how to manipulate the game in their favors. There's only a few of them up in Ocho that's playing right now, especially from a guard standpoint.

54:38Shannon Sharpe:If you look at the way they played the game last night, Joe and Ocho, and you see this a lot, LeBron is going to get in the pick, and he's going to want the ball at the nail because he's wanted at the top because he knows it's going to be harder for you to come double. Now he's going to – hey, either he's going to back you down, but if you watch him, he's constantly looking. Anybody coming? Yeah, yeah. Okay. Yeah. Okay.

55:00Chad Johnson:Yeah.

55:00Shannon Sharpe:So he's constantly watching, but he wants the ball at the nail, which is in the middle, at the top, at the free throw line because now it's going to be harder for you to bring the double team because I can see it because you got to come from down. You get on the corner, you might come, but even then, I said, hey, Thompson, you better take comfort. They better bring some help. Tate, they better bring some help. He said, y 'all ain't going to bring no help. So he going to keep going.

55:24Chad Johnson:Yeah. Yeah. It's like he just baited him. Yes. He baited him. I dare you to come. Because look, if you come, I'm going to fire right over to Luke Canard. and he gonna hit you across your head. I wish you would come help. And that's what he doing, he baiting him up. But now listen, if you don't come, I'm just gonna bully ball till I get two feet up to go. And I will...

55:45Shannon Sharpe:And then I will pump fake, get you up in the air. And then I'm going to the free throw line, I'm gonna get an and one. Yeah. Hey, he gotta figure it out. Absolutely. But if you notice, hey, he getting in that pick. He getting the pick. And as soon as that dude, Hey, now, hey, give me the ball. Yeah.

56:06Chad Johnson:You know why, though. You run that pick and roll, you got Singun. He in that drop. He in that drop. He waiting for you to come in. So now I got the lob, the Aiden, or the kick out, or I got my layup or my floater. It's just too many options. This is why the Lakers don't play Kevin Durant like that. You get in that pick and roll, we blitzing you. You got to get that damn ball at your hand. Ain't no hedging. Yeah.

56:29Shannon Sharpe:Ain't no drop. Ain't nothing. I'm getting the ball out your damn hands.

56:33Chad Johnson:Got to. Got to. Because if you don't, the great one's going to pick you apart. If they play KD like that, he have 45.

56:40Shannon Sharpe:Well, you saw him in the first half. He had the easiest 20 I'd ever seen. Yeah. And that drop coverage, he going to tag you up. You got to get the ball out of his hands. Mandatory. And so they did a great job of that. I thought, JJ. The only problem I had with JJ, they had a 15-point lead. and they cut it down to like 12 and he got LeBron up the bench. And before they could get LeBron in, it was three. No, take a time out, bro. Quell that run. You got to quell that. I got to suppress that. They cut a 15-point lead down to three in two minutes. Yeah. That was the only thing, the only problem I had with J.J.

57:26Shannon Sharpe:last night. I thought he had an unbelievable game plan in place. I thought the guys executed it extremely well. That was the only issue I had last night. Yeah.

57:37Chad Johnson:I think Houston, and I think Houston not having Steven Adams. Oh, yeah. That hurt. Yeah. If they had him, if Houston had him, he'll be a difference maker in this series. He can rebound, and he can sit them solid-ass picks. Yep. Yep. And, you know, he a guy who can get you a bucket or two down there. Up under their goal. And they missing Fred Van Fleet. They missing them two key opponents right now because KD needs a help.

58:02Shannon Sharpe:I think if they had Fred Van Fleet, they had a guy point guard. They need a point guard. They need somebody to get them in and out of the offense. And look, Armin Thompson, but he's not a point. Reed Shepard, he's not a point. Eason, Tate, anybody they try to – that's not who and what they are. They needed Van Fleet.

58:21Chad Johnson:Because you can't run pick and roll with none of them guys. Think about it. Those guys ain't masters in the pick and roll. You know what I mean? Thompson, you're going to always go over. You're going to make him shoot. Shepard, he's just not that type of a ball handler to where he can manipulate his defense.

58:37Shannon Sharpe:I'm just not going under him because he can shoot the ball.

58:41Chad Johnson:Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I'm going to fight over him.

58:45Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, for sure.

58:46Chad Johnson:Yeah, but he ain't going to be able to change the game to where he's going to give you 35 and you're going to be like, oh, man. I don't think that's going to happen. If he hadn't shown me, he's going to be able to do that in no playoff game. Peace to the planet. Charlamagne Tha God here. And listen, we are back.
