In short
This episode of Nightcap Hour 2 mixes NFL and NBA talk. Topic 1 (Rams): Guest Ram Safety Cam “Cam Bam” Curl explains the Rams’ defensive success. He credits the scheme built around players, a second year of the same secondary unit for faster chemistry, and defensive coordinator Raheem Morris allowing “not being robots” while staying within the play call. Key claims include that communication is central and that practice against elite receivers (Puka Nacua, Davante Adams) makes the defense better.
Notable examples
Stafford’s “follow the quarterback eyes” tendencies in practice and a Super Bowl example where he threw a pass that led to Cooper Kupp’s catch.
Topic 2 (Cowboys/Trayvon Diggs)
The hosts discuss Micah Parsons’ criticism of Dallas for returning Diggs from a knee injury without enough reps, arguing it’s risky without pressure from the front.
Topic 3 (Ja Morant)
Kendrick Perkins says he “doesn’t f*** with” Ja, blaming ESPN’s coverage and Ja’s repeated mistakes for the fallout.
Guests
Cam Curl (Rams safety). Kendrick Perkins (NBA analyst). Micah Parsons and Trayvon Diggs are discussed, not interviewed.

2:43Shannon Sharpe:After my Broncos ran over the Cowboys yesterday for 179 yards and Bo Nix throwing for 274 and four touchdowns, Jerry Jones gave a brutal, honest quote about his Cowboys. I don't know what's realistic. Could one better player, if we didn't pay too big of a price, have a better player on defense possibly help? I'm not trying to be cute, but that's when you go get help because you think that you could go get help for your defense. Are we one player away on defense? I think we're not. I think we're more than that. But we're closer than it looks, in my mind. Is executing better on defense? Ocho? Yeah.
3:26Shannon Sharpe:now this is what i don't get the reports are that he inquired about trey hendrickson from the from the bingles what i don't get you had micah that's four years younger than trey right but you say no to that now if you sign if you sound miles garrett what you got back you're going to have to give up more to get a player like Myles Garrett than what you got for Michael Parsons. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. Maybe he wasn't thinking because Jerry Jones did say they were better off defensively with Michael Parsons gone. He said that. If it's a lie, he told it. Yeah, you said when Kenny Clark came, it makes your defense better.
4:12And you also said we were no closer to winning the Super Bowl with Michael Parsons, so what's going to be the difference when he's not here so all those things are now coming back to haunt you because now your defense is 31st in the league right above us but i've always thought that was a weak link i think
4:33Shannon Sharpe:the thing is ocho is that you look at because they didn't have another player opposite of micah who will see he got rashawn gary now so now he has somebody that can if you don't if you don't double micah he's gonna get you if you don't double micah he's gonna get your quarterback yeah he's gonna pressure your quarterback so now right now teams are a bit more concerned about Micah than they are Rashawn Gary Gary is getting a lot of one-on-ones and he's winning I think he's probably up there close to his total for his career high I think his career high is like nine he's gonna have double digit I can see a scenario he has 13 14 sacks and that's because of the guy that's opposite of him but I think a lot of this had to do with egos I think Jerry you know Jerry wanted to draw a line in the sand.
5:17Shannon Sharpe:He didn't like the way the negotiation was going. He felt he had a deal with Micah. When Micah shook his hand and X, Y, and Z, he said Micah called the meeting. Micah said he wanted to meet with him. He wanted to talk to him. And he thought that, you know, he thought one thing. Micah thought another thing. And from that point on, Jerry was done. Jerry was not going to do. And Jerry made it abundantly clear. If you play in Dallas this year, you're going to play under your current contract. There is no contract extension. You're going to play on your rookie deal. You understand that, especially when he's handled other contracts and waiting to the last minute to get him done, making those players wait as well.
5:57And you're not special. You're not any more special than Dak. You're not any more special than Zeke. You're not any more special than C.D. Lamb. And one thing about Jerry, he's one of the few owners that you're not finna bully. No. you're not finna you're not finna bully me it's i'm i'm i am the program yeah i'm the program i
6:18Shannon Sharpe:think in that situation don't show jerry's a guy you got to make him feel good yeah jerry you know i really want to be here x y and z so forth and so on and like i said the number that he got jerry wasn't willing to go there but jerry would at the time uh i guess it was going to be a number bigger than what Micah, excuse me, what Miles Garrett got. So it's going to be something around there. Now, was he going to go in the blind and play$47 million? Hell no. When the highest contract at that time for a defensive player was Nick Bosa at around$32,$33 million, and you mean to tell me you're going to have somebody go$13,$14 more million per year than the highest paid?
7:03Shannon Sharpe:Hell no. Absolutely not. so jerry felt he made a very good a very compelling offer that he was willing to go make him the highest paid give him 40 million dollars a year annually and i don't know what the guarantee was but when that when that fell through jerry was no longer interested in in in in dealing with it he wasn't budging he wasn't budging he was set this is what i offered i'm not going a penny more yeah this is it and like you said now because everything that was going wrong before you know oh you know we didn't do this when michael was here and michael couldn't stop the run and yada yada yada it was a lot of michael i ain't heard him mention michael lately not you're running through you you can't you can't mention him and and listen michael parsons whether they were running through you or not when he was there he was the impact player right he change the trajectory of a game at any point.
8:03He can end games at any point. He is a massive disruptor all four quarters. Now you don't have that. You don't even have that.
8:15Shannon Sharpe:The linebackers aren't that good. Your corners, I mean, Bland is your best corner.
8:23Shannon Sharpe:Diggs is out. He's on IR, so you got backups sitting there uh i think hooker is injured yeah they just they don't i mean they just don't have guys that can shut the you know turn the lights out of the place and that's what when dallas was successful when dallas were winning they had that they had that at every level you know they had a ken norton they had a uh uh uh had a darren woodson and they had a time and they had a haley and they had those guys. They don't have that now. They don't have that. They don't. Offensively, they're immensely talented. They're inconsistent. They're inconsistent.
9:05Shannon Sharpe:The Broncos have a really good defense. They do. The Broncos have a really good defense. If you are what you say you are offensively, you should welcome that challenge. You should welcome that challenge. I thought the Broncos played an unbelievable ball game. Look, I know the Broncos. I thought the Broncos would struggle a little more defensively than what they struggled with the Cowboys than what they did with the Cowboys offense. I knew the Cowboys offense wasn't going to be able to. No. No. Because they're not that good on that side of the football. And they haven't been that good on that side of the football for an extended period of time.
9:41Shannon Sharpe:And because of the way they're built, they're built to play with a lead. If they don't go look at the Cowboys when they don't have a lead.
9:52Shannon Sharpe:got those small guys don't look well against the run they undersize but one thing they can do they can run they can run sideline to sideline but when you come downhill at them I ain't trying to go outside I'm trying to go right down here right down 95 I don't want nothing with three numbers in it because that's a loop I'm going I'm going north and south and that's what the Cowboys are lacking, they lack size they lack a hell race you need one Ocho you gotta have a dog you need one for any team to succeed I know we talk about we talk about skill set I know we always talk about high character guys you know and all this hey F all that You need three dogs at the three key positions that can change a game.
10:52You need a dog that's a quarterback. You need a dog on that front four somewhere, either at D tackle, defense end, and you need a dog at receiver. Sometimes you get lucky, you get your dog at running back. But those are the three most important places where you need a guy. You need that guy, the guy that can change the dynamic of your defense and the dynamic of your offense.
11:15Shannon Sharpe:Mm-hmm. Man, stop playing. Oh, he's not that good, but he's a high-character guy. Yeah, okay. Get your ass ran right through. It's going to be interesting to see what the Broncos does moving forward because PS2 is going to be down for it. It looks like he might be placed on IR because he can shut down. He is sensational. He's amazing. And he'll allow Coop and those other guys to eat. Benito, Allen, those guys. Strong. They do a great job. I turned off news altogether. I hate to say it, but I don't trust much of anything. It's the rage bait. It feels like it's trying to divide people. If we got clear facts, maybe we can calm down a little.
12:04NBC News brings you clear reporting. Let's meet at the facts. Let's move forward from there. NBC News. Reporting for America. Hey, I'm Hoda Kotb, host of the podcast Joy 101 with Hoda Kotb. Okay, if you know me, you know this. I'm always searching for inspiration, for support, and useful tools to help maximize joy. So this podcast lets us uncover all of that together. We're going to have these meaningful conversations with the world's most fascinating people, like when actress Olivia Munn shared how she overcame fierce health challenges that she never saw coming. I've gone through breast cancer and then helped my mother through breast cancer, and that was more difficult.
12:48There's a lot of people who understand postpartum depression. I was not prepared for postpartum anxiety. Olympic champ Shawn Johnson revealed why she had no choice but to be a gymnast. There was something about gymnastics that was intoxicating to me. It's given me a belief that we all have one of those treasures inside of us. We just have to find it. Listen to Joy 101 with Hoda Kotb on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
13:41I'm not worried about McKinney. My only concern is what happens in the back. And give you the truth about the U.S. national team from inside the program. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals. Whether you're a lifelong fan or this is your first World Cup. We've got you covered. Listen to Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tabramos on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Jake Brennan, and on the Disgraceland podcast, I explore the wild lives of rock stars and unbelievable true crime stories from music history.
14:22These are the stories you haven't heard, the kind you'll end up telling someone else. Like the time Paul McCartney spent in one of the world's most notorious prisons. Imagine that. You're Paul McCartney. It's 1980. You're an ex-Beatle, And you're doing time in one of Japan's worst prisons right there alongside Yakuza gangsters and for a ridiculous charge. Or the bizarre crime Lady Gaga is accused of. Who is the artist Lady Gaga is being accused of doing the unthinkable to after allegedly stealing her music and style to become famous? And what about that time Blondie's Debbie Harry escaped a serial killer?
15:06The man who had given her that ride she barely escaped from was Ted Bundy. Listen to Disgraceland on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The World Cup is underway and it's been incredible. On our podcast, The Away End, with Daniel Alarcon and John Green, we're talking about the games that have delighted us, the teams that have inspired us, what we're loving and what surprised us, all through the lens of being massive fans of the world's most beautiful game. Daniel, this tournament has been magical so far. The expanded field of teams has created some incredible matchups that have already made this World Cup one to remember.
15:41And now things get even more exciting with the intensity of the knockout rounds as the field is whittled down to one World Cup champion on July 19th. When you say it like that, I get a pain in my heart that the tournament is over. But there's a lot of soccer yet to go. And if the first few games of the round of 32 are any indication, anything is possible in the lead up to the final. We've got it covered from an ultra's perspective here on The Away End. So listen to The Away End with Daniel Alricone and John Green on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
16:17Shannon Sharpe:Hey, we got a very special guest joining us right now. Hey, C, what's up, what? What up, what up? Oh, like you about to rob something? No, I'm just comfortable, man. Okay, okay, okay. Welcome to the show, Ram Safety Cam Curl. Cam, how you doing, man? I'm doing good, man. I appreciate y 'all for having me. Appreciate you coming on. The bye week, you guys are coming off the bye week. So what did Cam do in this bye week? So take us through your bye week. You had the whole week off, so you got out of town, boom. No, I ain't even leave. I ain't going to lie. I stayed here. I was tired because we did all that traveling.
16:52Right, right. I stayed to Baltimore that whole week. Yeah. Then we traveled to London and played within that certain amount of time. So I was real tired from all the traveling. And I didn't get home until Monday, 2.30 in the morning. Damn. I slept all Monday, Tuesday. I went to the facility a few days, you know what I'm saying? But I just spent time with the family, really, just trying to let my body rest. Okay. You ain't do nothing outside of that, though? Like, to get away from the game of football? I mean, yeah. You know, I took the kids to the park and stuff. Like, you know what I'm saying?
17:26Like, just a little stuff. I ain't doing nothing crazy. Crazy? Yeah.
17:30Shannon Sharpe:I like it. You guys are number one. The first, your first in red zone defensive touchdowns allowed, third in points allowed, eighth in takeaways. What do you think the biggest reason you guys have having such success on the defensive side of the football? I mean, I feel like the system we got and the scheme we got, it's built around our players. And what we're able to do is, like, it's built for our skill set. And, you know, we've been in this system. It's our second year going on in the system, so we're all comfortable with each other, especially in the secondary. This is the first place. The first time I'd seen us bring back a whole secondary unit.
18:04You know what I'm saying? Same group. Can't back for a second year. Yeah, usually every year the room changes. You know what I'm saying? Right. But since we did that, that just helps us play even faster because we're more comfortable with each other and know how each other play. Yeah, and now that you are in your second year of this defense, how comfortable are you you know i mean i'm real comfortable like i i'm real comfortable how shula calls game and i'm real comfortable with with all my teammates you know what i'm saying and i just like flying around those guys like we have to making plays you know what i'm saying you know trying to keep doing that hey does your coach your defensive coordinator do does he allow you the freedom to do things off script that really really isn't part of x and those but because you're the one out there on the feel and playing the game and you have a feel for stuff, can you go off script and do stuff based on what you've seen on film?
18:55I mean, you know, as long as you make the play, you know what I'm saying, they ain't going to be too mad. But now they do emphasize on us not being robots, though. You know what I'm saying? They don't want to take the football instincts away from us. You know what I'm saying? So he lets us play how we play. You know what I'm saying? We're going to always go within the scheme, you know, in the play call. But, you know, he lets us go out there and fly around. Okay.
19:17Shannon Sharpe:You're known for your physical style of play. How did you get the How do you get the nickname Cam Bam? I got that name like in high school. It was a, I ain't gonna lie, you know, the females used to call me that. You know what I'm saying? Okay, okay, okay, okay. That's what it was. Cam Bam. Nah, you know, I bring that boom on the field too. You know what I'm saying? You know, it rhymes. You know, but like, yeah, it's just a little nickname. Hey, let me, I got a question for you. since they call you Can-Bam and you know him for coming down here, coming to the party, you think you would have been able to hit me when we were playing?
19:55Like if I just happened to be in this area, you think you would hit me? Yeah, for sure. Like, hey, hold on, you laughing. You see, you think about - Nah, because you a little thin, man. I'm 220. What you talking about then? What you was weighing back then? Back then I was 230. All right, bro. All right. You got it. If you 230, then you got it. Yeah, I would have ran through you. But, man, don't do that. Don't do that.
20:23Shannon Sharpe:What was some of the factors? What was so appealing for you with signing with the Rams? Honestly, like, off the bat, just, you know, Sean McVay. You know what I'm saying? Just even before I got here, just seeing him from afar and, you know, hearing things about him and watching his interviews and stuff, like, that's just off the bat like a guy you want to play football for. You know, just the type of guy he is. and you know I knew it was a winning culture here you know they just won the Super Bowl not too long ago you know what I'm saying you know they always get into the playoffs you know so it was just it felt like the right fit you know what I'm saying it's a bunch of young hungry guys on the defensive side with some stuff to prove and you know I felt like I fit right in You came in the league kind of like I came in the league I was a self-around draft pick I was 192 you were self-around draft pick and I never felt like I made it.
21:16Shannon Sharpe:I feel like I had to go out there every single year and reprove myself that I got to give him one reason. And I always get this mindset. When I went to practice camp, I said I got to give him one reason to keep me. Just one. Man, you see that route shot ran? Man, you see that catch that he made? You see how he picked up that blitz? I needed one reason for him to say, yeah, we got to keep him another day. What was your mindset coming in? You got a seventh-round draft pick by the commanders. What was your mindset? Because, you know, normally seventh-round picks don't count by this. They just, hey, they need somebody to fill out the roster.
21:51Shannon Sharpe:They ain't really trying to give us no look. But you got to see me because I'm going to make you look. No, in fact, no, my mindset, I mean, I knew getting drafted in the seventh round, like I was just talking to myself like, you know, I got to take everything to the next level, you know what I'm saying, just to try to make this team, you know, coming in. because I was the only rookie DB that had picked up that whole like draft process. You know, they ain't picking up, creating stuff or nothing. So I was the only rookie DB in the room. So like, it's like, I'm going against vets. I'm competing against vets.
22:20You know what I'm saying? People already been in. So I just know how to take everything to the next level. And you know, all my vets there back then at 2020 season, like they really brought me in, you know what I'm saying? And showed me the way. And I just sat back, watched them and learn and you know, started making plays.
22:36Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. You look, being in two different, look, Washington, L.A., how similar or how different are the defensive systems that when you were in D.C. compared to what you are in right now in L.A.? I feel like it's a difference. I feel like in Washington, it was more of like, you know, like a straightforward, this is what we're doing, you know what I'm saying? We're not really, we wasn't really doing no disguising, like, you know. Damn. Matter of a plate. You just going out there. You ain't got no ski mask. You ain't got nothing. You ain't got no dark clothes on. You just going. That's how Del Rio is, though.
23:14It is. I know Jack. I play against Jack. You're going to put your position. You got to make the play. That's all that matters. And I feel like this Rams defense, it's a way more complex defense. You know what I'm saying? We run tons of different coverages. It's coverages that I'm learning about this year. I didn't even know it was coverage. You know what I'm saying? So it's a real complex defense, and it fits us because we got real smart players on our defense, you know what I'm saying, that can think on the fly, you know what I'm saying, and we communicate very well. Like this defense, communication is key for sure.
Read the full transcript
23:48Yeah, and it's funny when you talk about defenses being very complex, and you're able to do more with the defense when you have the right players with the right skill set and can communicate. it brings me back to that 2000 ravens that 2000 early 2000 steelers defense but kc they used to run defenses that weren't even on film yeah they weren't on film and people were always out of position but they were so good with a great understanding of being able to communicate and when the ball snaps they have fly back to exactly where they're supposed to be at but it was so confusing for me as an offensive player so the fact that you guys are able to do that to run complex stuff that you really don't see on film.
24:27You really don't know what's coming. Keep the offense thinking all the time, especially at the snap and after the snap of the ball, you'll always have an advantage. Always have an advantage defensively.
24:37Shannon Sharpe:For sure. Man, Cam, I'm looking at you guys' schedules. You got the Saints, Niners, Seahawks, Bucks, Panthers, Cards, Lions, Seahawks, Falcons, Cardinals. Damn, y 'all got a lot of birds up in there. Seahawks, the Cardinals, the Seahawks, the Falcons, the Cardinals. y 'all would try to put some of these birds out their misery yeah yeah we're gonna do that for sure man that's the ministry hey speaking of man what has it been like man to watch Puka Nakua man and Devontae Adams man Devontae still I know you know we talk about some of the best receivers in the game you know they mentioned Jamar Chase and Justin Jefferson you know JSN and some of those younger guys but to me Devontae Adams is still the best route runner in the league man what is it like man playing with him But it's crazy, man, just starting off like at practice, just watching every day at practice and being able to go against those type of guys every day, it makes us a lot better as a defense.
25:33Because every team, you're not seeing that every day. Oh, you know, that's hell. Every day. So that's just making us better. And then to add Matthew Stafford in the mix with those two, like it's crazy. But like it's just – it's amazing to see in practice.
25:49Shannon Sharpe:And it's hard to – like follow the quarterback eye. and Matthew Stafford looking over here and he throwing the ball over there. He looking over there and throwing the ball over here. You're like, Coach, why you go there? Because he was looking over there. You said follow the quarterback eyes. He do that to us in practice too. It's not just them. He do it to us too. Hey, when we saw it on the tape and the game, you didn't know it because I was at the Super Bowl. When he did that in the Super Bowl, when he threw – and he was looking like this here and he threw the ball and Cooper Cupp ended up catching it.
26:21Shannon Sharpe:It was right by the – because the linebacker was dead right. If he looks at him, the linebacker's going to pick it. But because he was looking over here and he threw it, he's like, oh, he ain't finna throw it. He's like, oh, my goodness. He did that. He threw it right off his ear hole. That was nice. That's crazy. We see that every day, man. It's crazy to watch. Hey, you know, Coach Yarb's still a receiver coach, huh? Yeah, yeah, my dog. Yeah, yeah, Coach Yarb. That was my coach at Oregon State. For real, yeah. No, Yarb's a cool dude, man. That's my guy, man. That's my guy. Well, Cam, thanks for joining us tonight, man.
26:54Shannon Sharpe:Best of luck. Continue your success. Stay healthy. And, hey, you guys got a nice little schedule coming up. But, hey, you done got your bye week. You get your second win. Now it's time to go finish the task. Yes, sir. Already. I appreciate y 'all for having me. Man, thanks for coming on. Appreciate it. Enjoy the rest of the evening. You too. I turned off news altogether. I hate to say it, but I don't trust much of anything. It's the rage bait. It feels like it's trying to divide people. We got clear facts. Maybe we can calm down a little. NBC News brings you clear reporting. Let's meet at the facts.
27:37Let's move forward from there. NBC News, reporting for America.
28:16There's a lot of people who understand postpartum depression. American soccer has exploded. The knockout rounds are here. The U.S. won their group, and now every match is win or go home. Score!
28:56USA! I'm Tad Ramos. And I'm Tom Bogert. On our podcast, Inside American Soccer, we'll talk about the real storylines. I'm not worried about Pulisic. I'm not worried about Balogun. I'm not worried about McKinney. My only concern is what happens in the back. And give you the truth about the U.S. national team from inside the program. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals. Whether you're a lifelong fan or this is your first World Cup, we've got you covered. Listen to Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tabramos on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
29:41I'm Jake Brennan, and on the Disgraceland podcast, I explore the wild lives of rock stars and unbelievable true crime stories from music history. These are the stories you haven't heard, the kind you'll end up telling someone else. Like the time Paul McCartney spent in one of the world's most notorious prisons. Imagine that. You're Paul McCartney. It's 1980. You're an ex-Beatle. And you're doing time in one of Japan's worst prisons right there alongside Yakuza gangsters and for a ridiculous charge. Or the bizarre crime Lady Gaga is accused of. Who is the artist Lady Gaga is being accused of doing the unthinkable to after allegedly stealing her music and style to become famous?
30:29And what about that time Blondie's Debbie Harry escaped a serial killer? The man who had given her that ride she barely escaped from was Ted Bundy.
31:04The expanded field of teams has created some incredible matchups that have already made this World Cup one to remember. And now things get even more exciting with the intensity of the knockout rounds as the field is whittled down to one World Cup champion on July 19th.
31:46Shannon Sharpe:Man. Ocho. What? Micah. He just can't let it go. Last night he blasted how the Cowboys have treated Trayvon Diggs. He told Yori Epstein of Yahoo Sports, Honestly, I feel like they F my dog over. You know what I mean? He's coming off a catastrophic knee injury, and I just think they did right by him. I didn't think they did right by him. He didn't participate all camp. He's going out there playing week one and two, and I just think you don't do that. I just don't think you do that to a player like that. And the type of knee injury that he had, they forced him out there. He has no reps, really. He's telling me he was in warm-ups phase during week one, even though even with the wrap up i just feel like you just don't do that i just feel like they screwed him over the organization let him down you know what i mean if you just don't do that to a player and i think he uh it was mad wrong and i just pray for him now you know michael and trayvon are really really good friends it seems to be he's echoing what trayvon relayed to here.
32:54Shannon Sharpe:What he can't say himself. What he can't say, I tell Micah, Micah ain't here. Micah, you say it. I can see where Micah's coming from. Obviously, coming off an injury like that also, but you have to think on the Cowboys end, well, if you're coming off an injury, you know, why don't you be here with us? Why don't you rehab with us? So we can watch you and we can dictate how far along you are, but when you're not here, we don't know. So when you do come back, you know we think you're ready because you're taking care of your business away from the facility you know doing it your way with your own doctors or whatever that's what you think that's what you may have so now we don't we don't we don't know so when you come back here we expecting you to be ready yes so that's where that comes from and putting them out there if he's not ready now you come back and say oh you're not ready and you're out there doing things your way and you weren't here.
33:48Shannon Sharpe:If you're here and you're not ready, that's one thing. You're there and you're not ready because we can update it. Okay, the progress. Jared's going to come ask the trainers. How far along is Trayvon? Yes. Will he be able to go week one? Do we need to put him on the pump list? What do we need to do? Well, you're telling us if you're not here training, that you're on schedule. And so you no longer need our training staff because you believe the training that you have is going to put you in position to be where you need to be. Right. And when they got that kind of money tied up in you, it's going to be...
34:30It's tough. It's tough, which is why they took that$500 ,000 from you.
34:34Shannon Sharpe:Yes. Okay, we know what. Let us recoup some of this. Let us get some of this back. They can give you a better understanding on how serious we are and how upset we are that you're not taking the onus and get yourself prepared for the upcoming season here in the facility where we can document and keep tabs on how far along you have to go so we know what to do. So we know what to do on our end. And I think the thing is, Ocho, is that they put him out there. If I know he's not healthy, I put him out there. I'm going to make it look bad. So that way when we release him, ain't nobody going to feel – man, you see how my man played?
35:09Yeah.
35:10Shannon Sharpe:Listen. And he had a bad injury. I don't know if it's the same because he tore his ACL and then he had another. I don't know if it's the same. Was it the same knee that he tore his ACL or was it the different knee? But in any case, he had two injuries, two knee injuries in the last two years. You ask him an awful lot, Ocho. Ask him an awful lot. And here's the thing. He's predicated he's going to take risk. You can take those risks when you have a defensive line that can put pressure. When you had Micah and you had D-Law playing at extremely high levels, that was collapsed in the pocket, you could take those risks.
35:45Shannon Sharpe:Now he's still playing that same way, and they don't get that same pressure. So guess what that means? Big plays, giving up. Yeah.
35:57Shannon Sharpe:It's tough. I see both sides. That's the thing, Ocho. And that's what I tell you. Look, I understand that you want to be away from it, because I'm going to beat Ocho. I'm there from when we get back in training camp. I'm going to get really one week away that's the bye week other than that I'm there all of September October November December hopefully if we're lucky Cowboys hadn't been so fortunate all of January but I know I'm going to be there for five months and I know you don't want to be there in the offseason rehab but you're there February March April guess what OTA starting April damn I ain't even get a chance to get a break but Ocho when they got that kind of money invested in you, when you got that kind of contract, I'm telling you, this is the expectations that they have.
36:48Shannon Sharpe:And, you know, you're saying that you're ready to go because if you're not there rehabbing and you're coming off that serious injury, you better be on your – that thing better be. Yeah. Hey, you better be able to do the tootsie roll with that knee and everything, don't you? Hey, all that. God, they're going to be looking. They're like, bro, why weren't you here? Yeah. I know one thing. Even though he's not ready, he probably won't be a Dallas Cowboy. No. I don't see a scenario in which he will be next year. Listen, Trayvon, boy, you see this, boy, come on down to Cincinnati, boy. You're going to love it.
37:28Shannon Sharpe:You're going to love it. Don't go down to Cincinnati. They ain't going to put no pressure. They're worse than the Cowboys. Think about it. They're worse than the Cowboys, Trayvon. and you see what's happening to the secondary in Dallas and Cincinnati worse than them. Hey, listen. Come on down now. Come on. We got Newton, DJ Turner, Cam Taylor. We can add you to the pot. The more the better. The more the merrier. Help us improve. We're ranked 32nd right now in defense. You can come in. We need an impact player. Huh? We got Trey Hendrickson on that edge. He won't be there next year. Huh? He won't be there next year.
38:04Shannon Sharpe:Okay. Let me pitch my stuff to Trayvon. Well, don't lie to him and get him there. And the people that you say are going to be there are not going to be there. All right. Well, we need an impact player. And he can come back. You chill, rest, get your knee together, come back next season. Boom. By that time, we're going to get the Trayvon digs of old. And number seven is available. And you ever call the store and they tell you they got something, and when you get up there, they ain't got it? oh I thought we had it that's why I called you think I would have brought my ass up here if you didn't have it I came up here because you told me you had it you could have told me that on the phone that you didn't have it and by the way you know you didn't have it
38:47now you done got me up here for no goddamn shit
38:49Shannon Sharpe:now you got me up here no you not sorry you could have took your ass right behind got from behind this counter and come back there oh I'm sorry Hold on. They'll get slicky with you too now. Well, since you're here, you mind if I show you something else? No. Show me the door. I walk up out of here. No. If I go looking for something, Ocho, do you have the brown loafers? They come back. We didn't have the brown, but we got black and oxblood. I didn't ask for either one of those. I asked for brown. Yeah. Well, no. if I'd have wanted black or oxblood guess what I'd say do you have a black loafer or oxblood loafer that's what I would have asked for I didn't ask for that hold on hold on you just slick just you just slick through that word in there that that sound like a big word and that sound like a color oxblood yeah what's that what's that hey you you getting real fancy you getting real fancy oxblood yeah what that mean what color that is what part of the reddish yeah yeah why didn't you just say red then because it's not red it's like a i mean you you right there's no need to be fast so okay how about this here we don't have we do have a cognac or we have a black how about that is that better kind of okay so why are we talking about shoes or we talk about alcohol?
40:23Shannon Sharpe:We talk about shoes. The color shoes coming. Konyak, okay. The colors are dress shoes. Okay, I got you. Why don't you just say Konyak? Why don't you just say Burgundy? Okay. Hey, you real. Hey, boy, you real. You fancy tonight. Okay. With Konyak. Or Burgundy. My bad. burgundy there you go yeah but i i just look that it's and i get it my
41:00Shannon Sharpe:you should be one of the happiest men on earth yeah uh you're somewhere i mean if you didn't feel wanted or appreciated in dallas they gave up one of their better players and two first round picks for you and they paid you a boatload of money so i'm not even worried about Dallas anymore. Yeah, it would have been great to finish my career there, but it didn't happen. For whatever reason, it didn't happen. It didn't happen. Man, Dallas is the last thing on my mind. Yeah, but listen, it might be the last thing on his mind, but when reporters ask him certain questions, then he's going to answer it.
41:38Shannon Sharpe:I'm just saying, you know what? I'm not there anymore. I still have great friends in that locker room. I wish them nothing but the best unless they play the Packers. But other than that, I don't really care to talk about the Cowboys anymore. We know, first of all, they don't need to ask Jerry about Micah either. We know how Jerry feels about Micah. We know how Micah feels about Jerry and the Cowboys. It's understood. See, what's understood doesn't need to be discussed. I mean, there are certain situations why would you ask somebody when you already know the answer? It's not just because now you want clicks now.
42:22Shannon Sharpe:You know how that man feel about the Cowboys. You know how Jerry feels about Micah. I'm not even wasting my time even having a discussion about that. But it is a situation where digs. Maybe he felt that he was healed. Maybe he felt that he was healed well enough, Ocho. Instead of having to be in Dallas, he could rehab wherever else he was. I don't know if Dallas is his home. I don't know where his home is. But maybe he had felt he had progressed to the point that he no longer needed to be up under their watch. Right. But when you come back and they give you a physical and the knee is not where it needs to be, they're going to feel some type of way.
43:12Shannon Sharpe:Because their feeling is that you could have been here and this could have progressed in a positive manner. Because at the end of the day, Ocho, we're paying you money. We're going to get you on the field now. I'm just saying. I'm just saying. I'm saying. I understand all that other stuff that you're saying, but we're trying to get you on the field. Yep. So, we got the Steelers. Reunite Aaron Rodgers with his former wide receiver. Pittsburgh is signing with veteran wide receiver. NBA is Valdez Scantling, Aaron's former teammate with the Packers. Scantling, only 31 years of age, began his professional career in Green Bay, playing on the Packers 2021.
43:54Shannon Sharpe:His 2020 season, he had 690 receiving yards, six receiving touchdowns, which are both career highs. he also said that he also I think he won two Super Bowls he won two Super Bowls with Mahomes if I'm not mistaken I think he won two Super Bowls with Mahomes Ocho you like this pick up? I mean it's cool it's cool it's a player that's familiar with Aaron Rodgers Aaron Rodgers is also familiar with him I think he's going to be fine you got another speedster you had more speed you already got Calvin Austin you got DK now you had MVS who also can run and is a deep threat. He can stress the defense. So we're going to see how he's used, what positions they put him in, you know, they put him in to make the plays and use his skill set to his strengths in helping that offense.
44:44I think he's going to be all right.
44:47Shannon Sharpe:I think he was there. He was in San Francisco earlier this year and got released from there. I think he was in Buffalo last year. so hopefully he finds a home that he can stick like i said he's only 31 years of age he's kind of bounced around the last couple of years but hopefully he can get there and stay for to the end of the season oh joe kendrick perkins appeared on out the mud podcast he said i don't f with jaw you know why i don't f with jaw the reason i'm so mad at you espn spent millions of to doing all access on Ja in Memphis. They did that for Ja. Bro, I was like the one that was praising Ja.
45:27Shannon Sharpe:We anointing you as the chosen one, and you F it up. Guess what? Not only did you make you look bad, you made me look bad. They recognized you because of me speaking highly of you. It ain't no coincidence that you went from having three games on ESPN to 52. Ja responded, you know the reason I don't for my notoriety. you're the reason for my notoriety perk come on dawg you sure know why I don't F with you I don't F with your kind hey well listen they went from three games to being televised because of Jock because of his play on the basketball court you know he's very energetic he's very animated plays above the board he's exciting he's an exciting player that is why people have gravitated and ESPN even wanted to you know go and do whatever it is and spend the millions to go see him.
46:22Josh made some mistakes. Some mistakes. Yes. Yes. Some mistakes I'm sure he's learned from. He deserves to be in the conversation when it comes to talk about the better basketball players in the NBA. Dan Steph Curry's, the LeBron James, the Wimby's, the Kevin Durant's, James Harden's. He belongs in the conversation with some of the better players in the NBA, despite him being as young as he is. and listen we all make mistakes huh we all do I'm sure I'm sure at this point he's learned from him he's not going to get too many more opportunities to make mistakes of that magnitude and and kind of stain the NBA shield but I mean he's on he's on the right path he's on the right path he's a dynamic player and one of the reasons why he says yes this is the reason what you're doing right now is why I don't why I don't mess with you what you look right now why are you even conversing and
47:12Shannon Sharpe:And, you know, that's... I don't think, to be fair, Perk is not the reason for Jaws' notoriety. We have to accept responsibility and accountability for our own actions. Perk having to talk about it on ESPN, as we all had to do at one point in time, we were disappointed. We were disappointed when it initially happened. And so we're like, you know what? Hey, he's a young, I mean, Jaws, 21, 22, 23 years of age. put himself in a bad spot let's hope he learns and grow from it and the next thing you know guess what he's back on IG and he got he got to stick out again and I'm like come on Jha you just you just went there after you were suspended to begin with and you went there and you talked to Adam Silver and you know you gave this man your word I'm assuming that you gave him your word that you would not find yourself in this position again.
48:09Shannon Sharpe:And so that's what and we all had to talk about it. And I think the thing is what we try not to do is like, you know what? You're not your worst mistake. A lot of times that's we get labeled. We're never our best actions. We're just our worst mistake. And so I think, you know, look, I don't want to speak for Perk. I know Perk. Obviously I know Perk started out. He was on Fox he was undisputed with skipping out and then he went to ESPN and and and and and carved out a niche for himself he's great um but and and maybe maybe is a situation where what Johnson look I disagree with with John when he says Perk is the reason why for his notoriety maybe maybe now like when when we talk about stuff Ocho once we talk about something on here I'm not going on Twitter to try to highlight it again.
49:09Shannon Sharpe:I'm done with it. Once I talk about it here, we talk about it on the show, I'm done with it. I'm not having a conversation with anybody else about that situation. I'm done with it. I've already said what I felt I needed to say on that situation. But it's tough. It's really tough, Ocho, in this business if you have relationships and somebody that you have a relationship with they mess up because now people are sitting there like this here what you gonna say your boy messed up you ain't gonna say nothing yeah they wait yeah i mean it's like it's like that's what they're waiting they'll they wait they're waiting on to hear you say something so for the most part um i just try like if i have a relationship or i speak to someone i don't really say anything about it.
50:00Shannon Sharpe:Now, the LeBron situation, everybody knows how I feel about LeBron and so forth and so on, so they automatically assume that I'm kicking it with LeBron up in Brentwood and anytime he has an event, I'm there. I'm not. People just choose to overlook when I call LeBron out or I criticize something that he's done. They overlook that. Oh, the clutch checks must not be coming no more. The direct deposit ain't gonna hit no more. Bro, no, I just if he's right, he's right. If he's wrong, he's wrong. It's simple. It ain't no more than that. Clutch don't send me no checks. I was employed by Fox and Undisputed.
50:36Shannon Sharpe:I was employed by ESPN. Now, Ocho, we have our own thing. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. Y 'all try to make it out to be that because if I criticize Ron, it's the checks. If I don't criticize Ron, oh, see, now you talked about this, you talked about that. No. That's what, in this space, that's what you have to do. It's like, oh, if I'm a fireman, oh, you went in that building and put that fire. You ain't going to this building and put that fire. What kind of ball job is that? I'm a fireman. So when you do what we do, we have to talk about certain things. We just do. And you want me to give my honest opinion, my honest take on certain things.
51:19Shannon Sharpe:It's not about a like or dislike because I don't know the guys well enough to have an opinion one way or another. all I'm talking about is the guys on the court the basketball play now when we dealt with y 'all we had to talk about the gun in the club and the IG stuff like that we had to talk about that because that wasn't basketball related but for the most part when we critique or analyze we keep it to on the field unless they do something off the field and we have to talk about it but trust me I've never gone to a producer be at an ESPN be be at an office be at an office say oh I want to talk about this we talk about it we talk about it if we don't we don't I'm good either way that way I don't really get involved in the topics I talk about anything I can talk about it on the spot because I follow football close enough I follow basketball close enough.
52:19Shannon Sharpe:I follow the things that I feel we're going to talk about, Ocho, close enough that I can have an intelligent, honest conversation about it without making it personal. Oh, you did this. I never called for a video of Russ and his bloopers. Y 'all get mad at me talking about what it was. No, it was Russ hitting the top of the backboard. It was Russ that airballed it. All we did was, all I did was talk about it. That's what I did. just like when he got the triple doubles when we was talking about Russ getting a triple double and we were highlighting him nobody had a problem so what you want us to do when he's not playing well and he's turning the ball over should we not talk about it that's how it works when Tom Brady played good I had no problem saying Tom Brady played good but when Tom played bad I had to say he played bad when Peyton Manning played bad when Aaron Rodgers played bad when Patrick Mahomes when Tony Romo you just do it now I understand when you look at it like oh you said this but you ain't say this about the black guy you said really dude is that where we are right now that's what we doing I look at the play I don't say oh that black guy threw a touchdown oh the white guy caught the touchdown don't do that I'm like bro what are you doing yeah i mean listen those those two they they they got to get it they got to get it get it fixed maybe maybe they won't but obviously if they don't fix it i think maybe the takes on the takes as far as you know kendrick perkins when it comes to talking about ja marant you have to be fair you know and yeah it's fair uh 98 of the time when you do talk about ja his play is going to is going to speak volumes it's going to speak volumes and the whole notoriety comment, Ja was going to be Ja regardless.
54:16No matter where he went. No matter what NBA team he was playing for. He could have been down in Shanghai. He was going to make ESPN in Shanghai. ESPN was going to travel to Shanghai to go feature and show everything he had been doing because he is box office. He's one of those type of players that puts butts in the seats. That's just who he is. based on his skill set, his makeup, his DNA. That's just who he is. So, I mean, no one is responsible for that outside of the individual himself. Yeah, yeah.
54:52Shannon Sharpe:But, you know, notoriety is infamous is that you're known for things that you would like not to be known for. Ah. John did that. DeAndre Aiton is trying to stay motivated on the court and revealed that several of his teammates have made it a habit to troll him off the court as motivational tactics. They all have their own little thing to get my head all mixed up. Austin Reeves is my guy. Luka is my guy. But my wings and my forwards, yeah, they be trying to get me ticked off before these games just to get me rolling. I'm starting to see it as a trend because I don't get a break until we're on the court.
55:31Shannon Sharpe:Then it's all seriousness. I'm like, oh, this is the thing y 'all want me to do. Y 'all want me to get on edge. if y 'all want me to be fired up, I like it. Dudes really care. On Sunday night, the big man tallyed 22 points and grabbed 15 forwards. So maybe it's work. It ain't working tonight because I think they're losing to Portland right now. Listen, the funny thing about it, listen, he's been a part of the locker room for a very long time. Anything that happens to you on or off the court, you know the jokes are coming. The jokes are going to fly, always. And listen, whether it be a motivating tactic or not, they're going to make fun of any situations that you have as long as it was nothing that was harmful oh them jokes are going to fly on you've been in locker rooms now still to this day certain things, certain jokes still fly that resonate and stuff happens to you that's going to stay with you forever you know, and your teammates man, they're going to make fun of it all the goddamn time Ocho, what happened?
56:33Shannon Sharpe:can you explain this to me? what happened how does a guy making a hundred plus million dollars need motivating i mean hey hey um well it's different now you know this nba now sometimes you get that kind of money and you relax and you sit down there are very few that make make a hundred million and still play the game like they ain't got a dollar to their name there are very few again i'm gonna say it again. You've seen it before in football. Now, I can't really make a test to it when it comes to basketball, but you can because that's something that you love and are passionate about. But think about how many players in the NFL that you've seen get paid, and all of a sudden, they disappear.
57:16Now, they out there. They on the roster. But the play, which is the reason why they got the money they got, for some reason it just disappears. The hungry, the hunger, the drive, the want to.
57:31Shannon Sharpe:Eventually it'll wear off. I can motivate you by fear. I can motivate you by money. But the only thing that's sustainable is self-motivation. So eventually, Ocho, I can make or crack all the jokes I want. I can pay you all the money that I want. I can put fear that I'm going to release obviously in basketball, the money's guaranteed. So once you give him, once he signs his name on the contract and you sign your name on the contract it doesn't it doesn't mean anything because you can't scare him anymore yeah but if a guy that's not self-motivated ain't nothing you can do but but also too long when you're in that kind of environment it's only 15 guys you're playing as the lakers one of the best franchises of all time you understand the legacy that they have they've won multiple championships you don't want you don't want to let those guys down on everybody's watching you now that's all the motivation you need.
58:22The money ain't the motivation at this point. You're playing for the Los Angeles Lakers.
58:28Shannon Sharpe:When you play... What happened? There's 15 guys in every locker room. And he wasn't motivated in Phoenix. He wasn't motivated in Portland. What makes you think he's going to come and be motivated in LA? I just told you, huh? Where is he playing? He's playing in LA. It's different than playing in Portland. It's different than playing in Phoenix. Tell me the difference between a polar bear that's in Antarctica and one that's in the zoo in San Diego other than his environment he's still a polar bear I like that that's a good one I like that so I understand what the Lakers brand is I understand what it represents but at the end of the day that just happens to be the same individual that the other two places that was in a better brand he hasn't changed nothing about him has changed how's his game so far I know it's early in the season how's he He's been playing good, huh?
59:21Listen, the Lakers needed a big man. Is he the answer? That was the problem last year. It was too small. Is he the answer? What's the question?
59:35Is he the big man that the Lakers needed? Is he the answer?
59:41Shannon Sharpe:Lakers big men are normally motivated. That's why they're known for the big man. from Mike in Minneapolis to Wilt, to Kareem, to Shaq, to Powell.
59:54Shannon Sharpe:Okay.
1:00:00Shannon Sharpe:Hey, I don't get it. Some things ain't for me. It's not for me to understand everything. I don't understand because I think the thing is that we work so – you work so hard to get into a position, Ocho. Yeah. And then now you get there. Because think about it. I mean, maybe you're so immensely talented. Seven footers. I mean, there probably only, there probably maybe 100 people in the world of 8 billion people that's seven foot taller, taller. Right. So, you know. Aiden's seven feet tall too? Yeah, he's seven foot. God damn. Yeah. So I think the thing is for me, Ocho, because I had to work so hard.
1:00:38Shannon Sharpe:Right. I'm a very motivated. I'm a very self-driven person. Yeah, you're different mentally. I am. Everybody's not wired that way. Nope, you're right. That's what makes sense. See, that's why I couldn't coach. Everybody says, oh, you're a coach's dream. All my employers, man, you are a dream. I'm going to be prepared. I'm going to do my work. I'm going to go home. That's it. That's all I want to do. That's why you need to coach. No, no, no. You'll get me based on because you got Shea and Luca. And you got Steph. that's three guards right there now one of those guys gonna i mean luca normally leads uh but but now they just go front court and back court so so he would have to get selected and then you got ant man so ant man shea luca steph i don't think he's more popular than any of those guys so it's gonna have to be it's going to have to be at the coach's discretion.
1:01:46Shannon Sharpe:Marlene Spivey, when was the last time you guys been to a rodeo? I ain't never been to a rodeo. That's a good question. Unless they're talking about rodeo. As a matter of fact, the last time I went to the rodeo was down here in Duluth, Georgia when I rode the PBR bull Deja Blue. Yeah, that was my last time at the rodeo. I told the PBR that obviously I would love to make riding bulls a hobby that I would take that profession actually serious. They told me we're going to look into it after football season is over, so I might get back into bull riding. You shouldn't. James Rebello, Unk, Ocho, Unk, the Laker game, I ride with you.
1:02:33Shannon Sharpe:We can get some good steaks, some cigars with Unk's 5 ,700. No, it's 5 ,900. Tim's been saying, Unk, Ocho, okay, you guys wish my wife, Natasha, what is it? Natasha? Natasha, a happy birthday. We've been together 11 years. She was in an accident a few weeks back, so I'm grateful to be celebrating this one with her. Absolutely, Natasha, happy birthday. Your hubby, guys been together 11 years. He wanted to let you know, he wanted you to celebrate this day, let you know that it's special. but he wanted to take a special time to celebrate because he realized just how fortunate it is to have you in his life and mentioned that you were in an accident.
