In short
The hosts debate natural grass vs artificial turf for player safety, reacting to George Kittle’s criticism of NFL teams using grass for World Cup matches but not for NFL players. They also discuss Drake’s World Cup betting flex, and Cape Verde’s breakout goalie gaining massive Instagram followers after a strong Spain match.
Guests/backgrounds
No formal guests. The episode is hosted by Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and “Iso Joe” Johnson, with “Ocho” and “Joe” as co-hosts.
Key claims
- Kittle: grass is better for players’ bodies; NFL should invest in players and prioritize grass fields.
- Ocho: injury rates (e.g., ACL tears) seem lower in soccer; turf is often blamed.
- Joe: turf feels like “concrete with a carpet,” prefers grass but notes grass maintenance and stadium scheduling issues.
Notable examples
- Drake: bet $707 on Canada vs South Africa, winning about $231,000.
- Cape Verde goalie “K-Birdie Gold”: Instagram followers jump from ~43,000 to 17.2M after a 0-0 vs Spain; next match vs Argentina (round of 32).

2:32Shannon Sharpe:George Kittle spoke out against NFL teams being willing to use grass for the World Cup matches, but not for their own players via the NFL PA. We've made it clear that we prefer grass fields. We know it's better on our bodies and clearly we know it's possible based on everything that went on putting grass fields for the World Cup in each stadium. At this point, it comes down to the NFL making it a priority and choosing to invest in us as players because our bodies are our business, which they get to capitalize on. Ocho, do you agree with Kittle? I mean, this has always been a real tough one for me too, Oconjo.
3:06And for me, you look at all the injuries, right? You look at the injuries when it comes to soccer, whether players are playing at their clubs or whether they're playing here at the World Cup. And the rate of injuries for them as far as ACL tears is so far few than the NFL. And most of the time we get hurt, it's on the artificial surface. And what do we say it is? We say we're tearing our ACLs because of the surface. So, I mean, is there some truth to it? Probably so. But one of the things that would happen is, is now you're adding more money having owners to have to pay for maintenance to the grass.
3:45Because most of the stadiums that have the artificial turf, it's cold weather stadiums. It's where it gets cold at some point. Now, if you have grass, well, when you get the goddamn November, December, and January, well, you're going to have hell on your hands. I get it though I understand where Kittle's coming from we've seen it countless times with players having injuries on the artificial turf and I mean for someone that never got injured and played on artificial turf Joe you know my whole life in Cincinnati I think I had grass my first year before they changed it I just I get it
4:26Shannon Sharpe:as a matter of fact I remember you guys used to have grass Well, first, at Riverfront, you guys had turf. Yeah, okay. And then the stadium that you got now, because I remember my last year, I think we played y 'all in 02. Yeah, see, we already had the turf. Y 'all had grass then. Then y 'all switched to turf. When did y 'all go to synthetic grass? I think it might have been. Like 05, 04, 04, 05? It might have been 03, huh? Okay. Maybe 03. I can't remember. But, I mean, I didn't mind, Joe. Joe, I don't care what I'm on. But they're on ice, but I'm going to run routes on ice. you know?
4:59Chad Johnson:Yeah. Hey, Joe, I... I'm saying, did you have a preference when you played? Grass.
5:06Shannon Sharpe:Grass. Absolutely grass. Grass. Grass. And then, look, we always had grass, and the Chargers always had grass. Now, the Chargers, because they shared the field with the baseball, so you just hope to avoid the Chargers before September. If you got October on, you know you're going to get nice weather, and you're going to get grass. We always had grass. Kansas City had turf. Then they went to grass. The Kingdome, the Seattle Seahawks used to play in the Kingdome. That was turf. Then they went outside and then when they started building aluminum field, they played at Husky Stadium. That was turf.
5:43Shannon Sharpe:And then they got grass. And so like the last couple of years, everything that I played on within my division was grass. Then go to Baltimore. Baltimore was grass. Jacksonville was grass. Tennessee was grass. Cleveland was grass. Cincinnati was the only one. But I think Cincinnati, by the time I got to Baltimore, Cincinnati was grass. But no, Joe, I didn't like the turf. Because the old turf, now they call this field turf, but the old turf was basically concrete with a carpet rolled on top of it. It was hard and you stayed with strawberries. You didn't really know how bad until you got your ass in the shower after the game.
6:34Shannon Sharpe:And then have your ass red. Cause you don't slid on that turf. It didn't appeal to a, yeah. Elbows and your forearms, your knees. So no, I prefer, I prefer grass, but to Ocho's point, the upkeep and the maintenance of it. Remember, the objective of any corporation is to make as much as we possibly can while spending as little as we possibly can. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. That's it. That's that's a output. Is here.
7:15Shannon Sharpe:Profits up there.
7:17Chad Johnson:Yeah.
7:18Shannon Sharpe:That's just that's just the way it is. Yes. And like you said, plus also they do so many other things. They got college football games there. They got concerts there. Can you imagine? You got a concert and you got 70 ,000 people in there. Grass? Nope. That stadium, that concert stadium, people walking.
7:43Chad Johnson:Yeah.
7:43Shannon Sharpe:Eat that up. Yeah. So I totally understand. I think the only two true, true grass is Houston and Arizona. Arizona? Because they roll them out on pallets. Hey, Joe, they grass so beautiful, boy. I'm talking about that low Bermuda grass. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Joe, hey, boy. It's like I've been on a golf course once, but it looked like that golf course grass, Joe. Yeah. St. Augustine. Because, you know, look, you got fescue. You got centipede. You got St. Augustine. You got Kentucky bluegrass. So it all depends because certain grasses grow different in certain areas. Some grass need a lot of sunlight.
8:29Shannon Sharpe:Some grass doesn't need as much sunlight. So you got to understand where you are approximately in the region that you live in. Yeah. That type of guy. See, that St. Augustine is a thick type of grass.
8:40Chad Johnson:Yeah.
8:40Shannon Sharpe:And some people like to kind of have that grass for their yard. You can't cut it too low because it'll burn.
8:46Chad Johnson:Yeah.
8:46Shannon Sharpe:And then some people like centipedes. Some people like fescue and the Kentucky blue. I don't know what Augusta National is. So, but they say, they say in Houston turf now. So they say in Houston, it's field turf now. Tampa has natural grass. Okay. But all I know is I got tired of cutting all of it.
9:08Shannon Sharpe:Let them push your lawnmower back around my yard. Oh, yeah.
9:16Shannon Sharpe:Drake flexed on IG that he won a million dollars betting on Canada to beat South Africa in the World Cup today. After placing$707 on his country, he walks away with a smooth profit of$231 ,000. How much he bet? He bet$770. $770? $770 ,000. Oh. Yeah. And he can't butt hair as a fan, Ocho. They scored with like a minute left and extra time. Yeah, on stoppage time. Stoppage time, yes. Yeah, it was a good game. South Africa had some chances too. They just couldn't find the back of the net.
9:57Chad Johnson:Hey, you can't even enjoy watching the damn game. You're spending that type of money gambling here.
10:02Shannon Sharpe:No, but for me, that don't make no sense though. I bet 770 to win 231. No, I need to bet 231 to win 770. I don't know how y 'all look at it but that's how I look at it Joe I need to bet little to win a lot
10:20Chad Johnson:I ain't trying to bet a lot to win a little I'm saying Canada was favorite though wasn't it yes I think that's probably why if they were the underdog it would be a little different yeah yeah yeah
10:34Shannon Sharpe:well it's officially 6-29 happy birthday Joe
10:39Chad Johnson:Hey, hey, hey, shout out. Hey, shout out on Ocho Nightcap family. You hear me chat. What's happening? You know, it's a real one birthday today. You feel me? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Cancer season. What's happening? You feel me?
10:52Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Yeah. It's a... I think it's... Hold on. I think it's Elway's birthday today, too. Okay. It's the 28th or the 29th. Oh, yeah. It might be the 28th.
11:02Chad Johnson:I see why Elway's so damn cold in. Yeah. Yeah, you born on the 29th, boy. you something serious. You hear me? Happy birthday to... Hey, hey, hey.
11:13Shannon Sharpe:You bet.
11:14Chad Johnson:Hey, shout out. Shout out to my people back at the crib and Lil Rock, what's happening? You know what I'm saying? Your boy still tapped in. What's up? What's up? You feel me? Yeah. Okay, okay. Hey, Lil Rock. What's up, Lil Rock? Yeah, what's happening? What's happening? Yeah, yeah, yeah. What's happening? Oh, what's happening? Okay, that's the gang. They throwing them Lil Rock. You throwing them to hell, man. Throw them to hell. Okay, okay, okay. You feel me? Yeah. Hey, Joe. and your shirt red? Yeah. Okay, okay, okay, okay, Damu, okay, okay. Here we go, here we go. Hey, get up, get up, get up.
11:44Come on, what we got?
11:45Chad Johnson:What we got, nigga, huh? Happy birthday, Joe.
11:47Shannon Sharpe:In other words, what you do, he bet 770, he get his 770 back, and they give him 231.
11:53Chad Johnson:Damn. Yeah. He took a damn good risk.
12:00Shannon Sharpe:Ocho, K-Birdie Gold, a keeper, Vozina. now has more Instagram followers than any active NFL, MLB, and NHL players. He has 17.2 million followers. What he came in with? 43 ,000. Hey, Joe. That boy balling. Hey, listen. Hey, Joe. After that Spain game, and they draw 0-0, and all them saves he had in that Spain game, the first game of the group stage, man, them numbers shot up, boy. Damn. He had a hell of a game. We talk about Cape Verde. A team playing Spain. They only got 524 ,000 people.
12:42Chad Johnson:Damn. That's it. Hey. And that man went from 40 ,000 to 17 million? 17 million. Or two million. Wow.
Read the full transcript
12:50Shannon Sharpe:Man, congratulations. They're about to have 424 ,003. Because Ocho and I, so we going. Hey, you know what I don't like, though? What's that? I love the Cinderella story. I love that Cape Verde. and some of the other teams, African teams that played well in the group stage, right? But the round of 32, guess who? Cape Verde got to play July 3rd. They got Argentina. They got to play Argentina. Oh, man. Let's just say for the sake of argument. Hypothetically? If they beat Argentina, he going to double that? Double? Boy, if they beat Argentina, right? Hypothetically speaking, the goalie going to 100 million.
13:33What? He's going to 100 million followers. I'm telling you.
13:37Shannon Sharpe:Damn, he didn't post no show he like that? It's not that he's that post. He stood on his head. Hey. They love – you got to realize, Ronaldo has like 668 million. Only Instagram itself has more followers than Ronaldo. Yeah. And then Messi is next. Messi has like 550 or maybe 560. Yeah. Maybe 530-something. So you got to think about it. Those two followers have over a billion followers. Over 1.1 billion followers. Just those two guys.
14:08Chad Johnson:That's crazy. Damn. Yeah, soccer big time, bro.
14:15Shannon Sharpe:You remember when Ronaldo went on YouTube? He started a YouTube page and got 50 million subs in like 24 hours. Damn.
14:29They are living icons still active in their respective craft. Yeah. Crazy.
14:35Shannon Sharpe:You know what would have been interesting? If Jordan was playing, how many followers would he have?
14:44Chad Johnson:Yeah, he had the same.
14:46Shannon Sharpe:LeBron has the most. I think LeBron's like 157 million. I think he has the most. I don't even know who's next. Maybe Steph Curry. I don't even know.
14:54Chad Johnson:Hell, Jordan will be up there with them damn soccer players. Hell, IG itself. Probably.

19:58Shannon Sharpe:the Monday night game versus Champ Bailey when you made him fall on that 50 yard touchdown bomb was your coming out party to let the NFL know you that boy and here to stay. I mean, listen, that was a good night against Champ. Obviously, Champ still one of the greatest. One of the greatest. When we talk about defensive backs, being able to cover one side of the field. In those conversations with Revis and Deion, Champ is that. I mean, that night, I'd like to say I got lucky a little bit, especially where he tripped over the back of my heel, which happens sometimes. But that was a good game. That was a good game.
20:30I would say that is my coming out party in a sense to let let people know and put them on notice. I hit a ride. All right,
20:39Shannon Sharpe:so what is the biggest shot you've ever hit in your life?
20:44Chad Johnson:The biggest shot?
20:49Chad Johnson:Damn. The biggest shot.
20:59Chad Johnson:I honestly don't know, man. You know, I had a few big ones. I can owe Joe Paul's, but... I can't really pinpoint one that was just...
21:13Chad Johnson:I don't really know. I don't really know. I know I had some great playoff moments, but I can't really remember one shot that was just like... I'm sure I got him, but I just can't remember none.
21:25Shannon Sharpe:I was on TikTok, and I saw a video that you showed a promo for your shoot for the Return to Baltimore on Monday night. You were singing Eminem's song, Guess Who's Back. but you put your name in it. Yeah, I couldn't use his.
21:41Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, and I'm sure ESPN paid money to get that cleared.
21:45Chad Johnson:Yeah, yeah.
21:49Shannon Sharpe:Nightcap, big three. My wife, Adrienne, and I welcome a baby boy, legend Maximus to the world today. Six pounds, 13 ounces. Mom and son are healthy. God is great. Quentin, congratulations to you, your wife. Congratulations on the newborn. Glad mom and baby are healthy. That is awesome. That's his thing. Hey, Andy born on Joe's birthday. Man. Hey, that's your first? That's his first? He said, welcome to our baby boy. He didn't say it was first, but Legend Maximus. Hey, I like that. Oh, I like that name.
22:23Chad Johnson:Legend Maximus. With a name like Legend Maximus? Hey, he got to be that boy. Hey, Destin for greatness. You hear me? He ain't got no choice. Hey, I tell you what.
22:34Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, you know what I'm thinking about? You know what? If you had another kid, Ocho, what would you name it? You know what, that's a great question. And most of the time, I stay out of the naming business and allow, you know, I'm in the naming business. You are? Yeah. I always allow mom to name. Now, if it's something I don't agree with, I will let them. Listen, you know what? I don't really like that. I don't like that. I'm just going to be honest with you. Yeah. But I let them do everything. I call my kids nicknames anyway. I haven't called Serenity Serenity since she was born. I say French Fry.
23:10I call her French Fry. Because she look like a little golden French Fry. That's my baby.
23:19Shannon Sharpe:Joe, what you got for him, Joe?
23:22Chad Johnson:I mean, all my kids' names start with a J, bro. I'm involved. They all got JJ's in their name. So, if I had a child, None of my juniors, though. I don't have, you know... Yeah, yeah, I ain't got no juniors. Yeah, I don't have no juniors. I wouldn't... I don't know, for whatever reason, man, I always felt that was strange. You know, maybe it was because of, you know, what I've accomplished and had to put that pressure on.
23:46Shannon Sharpe:You a junior, ain't you, though, Joe?
23:47Chad Johnson:Nah, I don't have my dad's last name. I just got his first name.
23:50Shannon Sharpe:Okay, okay.
23:51Chad Johnson:Yeah, but, you know, giving my son, you know, my name, bro, you know, hell, it's already enough pressure out here. You feel me?
23:58Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. Mm. You're right about that. That makes sense.
24:06Yeah, if that is his first child, man, you know, congratulations.
24:11Chad Johnson:You know two is better than one, though. You still working for twins, Ocho? Who me?
24:17Shannon Sharpe:Oh, I thought you said working for your boy, please.
24:20Chad Johnson:Who me? Yeah. Yeah. I'm trying to look for the right price, Joe. You know, that FBI, boy, that thing expensive, boy. Yeah, yeah. Uncle, what you name yours if you had one? If you had one, because I know yours still swimming. If I had a boy, I'd name him after my brother. Yeah.
24:38Shannon Sharpe:Oh, man, well, you still got time. Man, what I look like. I mean, it's going to be a 33, 34-year age gap between my kids. Ain't nothing wrong with that, huh? Hey, listen, ain't no rule. Ain't no rule book. Ain't nobody say you have to do things this way. What's 2026? Yeah, I got to do that. kids they got expensive now Ocho

25:14Shannon Sharpe:no you can't yeah I wanted twins once upon a time Ocho oh no I ain't never it's never too late you hear me It's too late. No, it ain't.
25:29Chad Johnson:It really ain't, though. For real. If you just really think about it. Hey, Joe. Thank you, Joe. Thank you. It really ain't.
25:34Shannon Sharpe:Man, you see how I'm moving around? How you think I'll be moving around in 17 years? Hey, they'll be able to push you?
25:44Chad Johnson:Hey, listen, listen. You going to have you a younger lady because you know you don't want nothing old but a bankroll. You hear me? Yeah, you hear me. I already know that. I already know you don't want nothing old but a bankroll. So listen. Hey, hey, hey. They call me Cat Pistol. Pie ain't nothing to smoke.
26:02Shannon Sharpe:Ain't no real bullets in that joke. Ain't no real bullets. Nah. Yeah, that's all I got for a bank. That's a move. Yeah. That's a move. Shit. As a trio Laker fan, once LeBron got there, I was able to put my dislike for him and root for him. It's not even LeBron. It's his fans. His fans make you hate him, but we'll be sad to see him leave.
26:28Chad Johnson:Yeah, you're going to be sad to see him leave. You're going to be sad when he retired too because, you know, the game has been in a great space and place since he's joined the NBA 21, 22 years ago. Man, it's going to be a sad day when he walk up out of that old Joe. Yeah.
26:48Man.
26:49Shannon Sharpe:People never understand it too, Joe. They never understand it. But I'm just trying to figure out, they say his fans. So what historically great players didn't have a loyal fan base? So Jordan fans don't bother you, huh? Kobe fans don't bother you. Steph Curry fans doesn't bother you. Michael Jordan, excuse me, Magic Johnson fans doesn't bother you. Just LeBron's fans, huh? You see that, John? Only LeBron fans. are any more fans more devout than Kobe and Jordan's fans no I would say no but hey it's gonna end for everybody Steph has mentioned more than once that he'd like to play in Charlotte someday any chance that could happen yeah but it won't be tomorrow hey probably by the time Steph start playing in Charlotte he'd be his three ball be looking like mine.
27:46Chad Johnson:Yeah, I don't see that happening. Not at the rate that they're going. I don't see that happening.
27:59Shannon Sharpe:LeBron is too old for these questions. It's rings or nothing. Like, why are we still playing for fun at this point in your career at this point in your career at a high level? Yeah, it is. It's easier to play when you still enjoy the game and you don't look at as a grind. How many people you think tomorrow morning is going to wake up like, oh, man, I got to go to this damn job. Yeah. LeBron is, most guys never have, LeBron probably never had to woke up with that. Brady, Jordan, Kobe, Peyton Manning, Joe, Ocho, I ain't never woke up like, oh, Lord, man, I got to go. Ooh, Joshua, he got to go to practice today.
28:42Shannon Sharpe:I ain't never felt that way. Now, I'm sure maybe some people have, but I've never felt like that. I've never had a job that I woke up and said, damn, I got to go in here today.
28:54Chad Johnson:Hey, not when you were enjoying it and having a good damn time. Now, when I had my first job at UPS, yeah, yeah, I was thinking that. I was like, damn, I got to go down here and pick up these heavy-ass e-rig boxes and unload this damn truck. Oh, wait, what is going to be here? Yeah, I thought about it again.
29:14Shannon Sharpe:You play good money though, Joe.
29:16Chad Johnson:Yeah, they play good money, but I was in high school. I had already made my man up. I'm in there with dudes, man, who've been working 15, 17 years. I'm like, oh, hell no. I can't do this for no damn 10, 15. Oh, hell no. Boy, I'm going to be in the gym tomorrow. For sure, for sure.
29:32Shannon Sharpe:That's how it is, Joe. Yeah. I mean, you working out there in the fields, and I'm young, and them men, they grown. They got kids. They got grandkids. I'm like, man, I'm not finna be working out here. You think I'm gonna be doing a manual labor job, me, with my kids at these feet? Oh, hell no.
29:51Chad Johnson:Hey, Ocho, dudes used to come in there. You know, if y 'all know guys who work at UPS, they all wear back braces. So I'm coming in. I see all these older dudes. They were like, hey, Joe, man, you gotta get your back brace, man. I'm like, well, I ain't even planning on being here that damn long. I'm just trying to work long enough for my back to start hurting. I'm just trying to find me something to do, make a little money before I go off to college, man. Damn this. I ain't going to be alone.
30:19Shannon Sharpe:Golden State Geriatrics. In the 1990s, two receivers had success against Prime. That's your brother, Michael Irvins. What did they do different for others in the 90s? They were physical. Yeah. My brother played for contact. Mike was a big physical receiver. Mike was the reason they outlawed the head slap because Michael Hurd was slapping hell out of people upside. Hey, Joe, coming over that line of scrimmage? Yeah. You're the problem I'm waiting. People ask me, man, the way you see Mike animated on his podcast, he's like that in real life.
30:55Chad Johnson:Yeah.
30:56Shannon Sharpe:That ain't no act. That's him. Yeah. He's the best, the coolest, the greatest. I mean, man, that dude there. As a matter of fact, we just We just saw it. I just saw it Thursday in LA. Mike, I gotta go, man. I said, man, I gotta go do my podcast. I said, you know how Mike is. Mike will talk to you for 30 minutes. Damn, Mike, I gotta go. But he's a man, great, great, great, great, great dude. Man, me
31:34Shannon Sharpe:and Mike took the Super Bowl that was in Atlanta. All I would say is this. Me and Mike took Gary Sheffield. He had a Winnebago.
31:46Chad Johnson:Yeah.
31:47Shannon Sharpe:He had a motor coach. I said, man, let me... He's like, you know how to drive one of these? I said, hell, it ain't nothing but a big old truck with a hull over it. Yeah, I can drive it. We boned out. Man, you know what? To this day, I don't know how he got that coach back.
32:04Chad Johnson:What? you were driving a motor coach

32:30and he was out there having the time I'm back in it
32:38Shannon Sharpe:Why can't Orlando seem to be able to get consistent playmaking point guards? Why does it seem like it's impossible to be good for three-point shooting for them? Did Rashard Lewis and them use up all the threes or something?
32:50Chad Johnson:They definitely need a point guard. They got point guards. They just don't have scoring shooting point guards.
32:58Shannon Sharpe:Suggs is a defensive point guard.
33:00Chad Johnson:Yeah, so they don't play great off Ben Carroll and Wagner. Their guards don't play great off them. They're great pick-and-roll guards who can get in the teeth of the defense, who can make plays, who can be disruptive defensively, but they're just not that great of an offensive threat.
33:21Shannon Sharpe:My man locked back up after coming out in January. I want to leave, but his son died in March from a car accident. Am I wrong? A man locked back up after coming out in January. I want to leave, but his son died. Oh, oh, she's saying my man is locked back up after coming out in January. I want to leave, but his son died in March in a car accident. Am I wrong?

No, Bart Simpson said Cowabunga. What did the Ninja Turtles say? Because they were like named up. They were Raphael, Donatello.

Long went and helped lead a team to the Super Bowl. Michael got hurt, but he was just starting to round into shape and to show you why Green Bay gave up the assets and gave him the contract that they gave him. You're starting to see that. We'll see. He believed that the players that he received back and the picks that he was able to get in the draft, he believes they'll be able to replace Michael. Only time will tell.
42:10Chad Johnson:Only time will tell.
42:12Shannon Sharpe:Which team can pay LeBron the money he wants and also contend for a championship? It seems to me Miami has the most. They can play him the full$15 million mid-level. Yep. Hello. Yep. Now, whether or not he can contend with a championship, I don't know. But I know they can play him the most. from what I've been reading, Miami has the most.
42:34Chad Johnson:And they ain't gonna have a number G League players surrounding their ass. So you can say sure. Hey, we'll cross that bridge when we get there, Joe. Don't worry about that. Okay.
