In short

Week 1 college football recap and debate, led by Ole Miss vs Louisville (Ole Miss walk-off 41-38), Notre Dame vs Wisconsin (Notre Dame 41-13 at Lambeau), plus FAMU/SSU-related commentary and a Labor Day Classic recap (Prairie View A&M 52-14 Texas Southern). Also includes discussion of Dabo Swinney “on the hot seat” and a Michigan vs Western Michigan Hail Mary replay controversy.

Guests (hosts/regulars named in transcript): Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson (former Bengals WR; all-time leading receiver, 6x Pro Bowler, All-Pro). Joe “ISO Joe” Johnson (former NBA player; 7x All-Star, All-NBA). The third co-host is referenced as “Uncle Ocho” (no additional real-world background given in transcript).

Key claims

Ole Miss won despite defensive coverage mistakes (gambling, blown assignments, “single high safety” errors) and offensive adversity (injuries/ cramps). Louisville’s comeback fell short after Ole Miss made key late plays. Notre Dame’s pick-six and second-half surge flipped a sluggish start; Wisconsin was outmatched. Prairie View A&M dominated Texas Southern; FAMU is said to have suffered a similar fate to SSU.

Notable examples

Ole Miss’s 48-yard walk-off field goal; Deuce Alexander’s 2 TDs and big rushing/dual-threat impact; Notre Dame’s CJ Carr 239 yards/2 TDs and CJ Kekar’s 2 TD passes; Aneas Williams’ 90 rushing yards and 2 more scores; Prairie View A&M’s Tevin Carter 4 passing TDs; South Carolina State’s Mason Pickett 17 carries/210 yards vs FAMU.

5:46Shannon Sharpe:Wow, wow, wow, what a game. What started off as a stinker turned into the best game of the weekend, and boy, did we have a shootout, Ole Miss and Louisville, but Ole Miss pulled it out thanks to a 48-yard walk-off field goal as they win a ball game. They were up by 14 late in the fourth quarter, but give Louisville credit and their quarterback, Lincoln Keenholz, he brought them back, but it wasn't enough. As Trinidad Chambliss gets their guys in the field goal range and Ole Miss walks it off 41-38. Y 'all know who I am. I'm your favorite on it. My partner's in co-host. Y 'all see him. Again, the game that just went off, Ole Miss wins the thriller, 41-38. Lucas Canario wins it for Ole Miss. Trinidad Chandler shows why he makes$3 million to$4 million. NIL money and Green Holtz showed you why he was highly sought after coming out of high school. You know, he started out with a little shaky, but he played himself.

8:07Shannon Sharpe:They got the right guy at quarterback. He showed you a lot tonight because when the rubber needed to meet the role, either he did it with his legs or he did it with his arm, but they got the job done. Ole Miss is going to be in trouble. That secondary is gone. Ocho, you cannot blow that many coverages. 14, that safety, how many times are you going to run by the DB? How many times are you going to run by the receiver and let him go in for a touchdown? How many coverages are you going to blow? I'm trying to play. You play cover three, and you trying to rob a route? Yeah. Bro, you treating it like it's covered too It's not covered too It's single high safety

8:42Joe Johnson:You got to be back I was going to say you got to be back Obviously trying to make a play and trying to gamble You gambled at the wrong time You gambled at the wrong time Probably saw something coming to the flat But the flat was covered There was somebody there Even if it does come to the flat You single deep, you deep That's not your man Nothing cheap, nothing deep Yeah, yes, sir. Yes, sir. But go ahead. Whatever you're going to ask me so I can answer correctly.

9:08Shannon Sharpe:No, I'm just saying, I mean, because you're looking at the game that started the first half, and it was like 10-6, and they're like, oh, man, here we go, one of these type of games. And then all of a sudden in the third quarter, they get going. Boom, boom, boom. And then the fourth quarter was even better than the third quarter, if you can imagine that. How was Ole Miss able to pull this thing out? Because they started losing guys. Offensive linemen get hurt. Two of the offensive linemen go out. Lacey goes out. Lacey, he gets hurt. He gets nicked up. But Deuce Alexander, he missed some time with cramp, and it seemed like a hot, humid night in Nashville, Tennessee.

9:41Shannon Sharpe:But Ole Miss was able to put it out. What did you like about what you saw from Ole Miss from start to finish?

9:46Joe Johnson:Obviously, having to deal with adversity. Obviously, first game of the season, Louisville played extremely well in the first half. It was kind of close, even though Louisville didn't have much offensive production in the first half. And obviously, Ole Miss having to – excuse me, I hate to say this, but the better coaching and the better players and making plays when it mattered most. Obviously, Louisville kept the game close and were able to make some plays on their end. That young bull, he going to play on Sunday, Deuce Alexander. Number one? Deuce Alexander. Was that number one, Ochoa? Yes. Yes, sir.

10:20Joe Johnson:He's nice. He had two touchdowns, over 60 yards. He looked good. Chambliss made some really good throws. He made some really good throws. And like you said, you can see why, you know, he's worth the three or four million that he's getting in money. And why he fought so hard to come back. Yes. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. Absolutely. And I have a question, too. And with him fighting hard to come back, right? Uh-huh. Having to declare for the – would he have had to declare for the draft without having that 50-year option, right?

10:50Shannon Sharpe:He got a 60-year option. This is a sixth. Yeah. If I'm not mistaken. Okay. Okay. Everything got thrown into flux with the COVID. Joe, you saw this game, and it went teeter back and forth late in the ball game. It seemed like once they went up by 14 late in the fourth quarter, you're like, okay, they done put this thing away. But give Louisville credit. They get a touchdown. And Trinidad Champions, they had a sprint option with the tight ends leaking to the flat, and he missed him. I think the guy got too much pressure. Another thing, he got too much pressure, and he didn't see him. And he looked back inside.

11:22Shannon Sharpe:he had the guy because the guy that had the tight end was trying to fight over the top. Yeah. And, hey, give him a great throw, and let's see if he can run the guy over and get the first down, and we don't have the dramatics that we had. But this was a great ball game. What did you like about what you saw from Louisville and the way they were able to fight when seemingly they were considered out of the ball game? I like the back and forth, Ocho. I thought it was very exciting. I'm like you. Give Louisville a lot of credit. They scored 14 in that fourth quarter. but man you think about a character win for Ole Miss you know Louisville tied the game up late in the second half but I just thought uh uh Ole Miss came and bro they was able to make big plays and they showed you they showed you why you know uh they're one of the top teams you know in college football it was an amazing guy hey they quarterback nice that boy can get up through that can't he man Yeah, Ken Ho.

12:18Joe Johnson:Ken Ho. Ooh. You know, yeah. He made some good plays. He made some good throws. I thought he used his feet well. I mean, we always talk about the dual quarterback, bro. I think Ole Miss, they – I don't know how Lane Kibben didn't take him with him. Huh? He didn't want to go. He must have got more money at Ole Miss.

12:41Shannon Sharpe:Ole Miss, I mean, look, at the end, they were kind of tired of Lane. they just wanted him to go.

12:50Shannon Sharpe:And that's why Chambliss wanted to stay. And then that's why he turned his attention to Levitt, the guy that was at Arizona State. But Keene Holtz, he's a transfer from Ohio State. But he wasn't, you know, obviously, you know, with Ohio State, they're loaded at damn near every position. But when you look at, when I look at Ole Miss defense, I thought their defense played horrible. They got guys, you got contained responsibility. too many dipping inside for what that's not your play to make see this is what get guys in trouble joe on the defense side of football when that is not his responsibility he has no inside responsibility and the guy starts inside and what does he do he goes inside so now when the guy bounces outside he has no response now he's lost his contain he's lost leverage yeah on the one that he scrambled outside and he threw over the top yeah he got purchased what are you doing you can't let it outside you have contained play your responsibility that's why pete golden golden was losing his damn mind on the sideline he's like what the f are we doing yeah how do we how do we keep make making these same mistakes if something getting lost in translation and i understand it is the first game but that is simple the coverage they're not running anything exotic they're not running a zone blitz they're not running a fire a fire zone they're not doing any of that that is simple single high safety that is simple you have contained edge you have contained no matter what's going on on the back side no matter what's going on in the middle that is not your responsibility yeah guys get in trouble when they try to do someone else's responsibility yeah it happens

14:30Joe Johnson:all the time yeah yeah as a fool you most of the time um your eyes are fooling you think you make a play that you're not supposed to make and you put yourself out of position and you give advantage to the offense because you're trying to trying to do somebody else's job yeah you're trying to do

14:43Shannon Sharpe:too much yeah just just do your job if you do your job somebody else has gap responsibility somebody else has the middle somebody else has backside i'm gonna do my job because the last thing i can have happen i try to do somebody else job now i'm trying to do his job and guess what I don't do my job. Son, keep your eye on your luggage. You got that responsibility, that's your responsibility. Somebody else, we all have a responsibility. I'm going to do mine. When we cut the film on Monday,

15:18Joe Johnson:we made the corrections.

15:21Shannon Sharpe:No, he's going to correct somebody else. He ain't going to correct me. I'm going to be where I'm supposed to be, Joe. And I'm just going to be sitting in my chair like this. I told you. Yeah. Hey, man, listen. You know what Ole Miss playing in the SEC, Uncle Ocho? If they really want to be one of the top playoff teams, bro, they can't keep giving these good teams extra possessions. You know how it is in the SEC. They'll put you away, boy. You know what I mean? I thought they did get a little careless today, but for the most part, being able to pull that win out at the end, I thought that fourth quarter was so exciting.

15:55But, man, the quarterback play was great. I thought number one. What was his name, Ojo?

16:00Joe Johnson:Who? Alexander. Oh, my God. Yeah, he'll burn the two, Joe. He could run now. Hey.

16:07Shannon Sharpe:I think his dad might have played in the league or something. For real? Really? Yeah, I think so.

16:13Joe Johnson:He would. Hey, how long down the schedule before they play Ole Miss, you think? You mean they play LSU? I mean, excuse me, before LSU, yeah.

16:21Shannon Sharpe:I'm not sure. Probably at least five or six games.

16:27Joe Johnson:That's going to be a good one, bro. That's going to be, hey. The third one? What? 19th of October. Wow. What are you playing? September.

16:41Shannon Sharpe:Oh, I'm thinking, yeah. The 19th of September. That's in two weeks. Where's the game, Ash? It's an Ole Miss.

16:54Joe Johnson:Hey, you ever been to Mississippi, Joe? What? That's what we used to play against them, man. What you talking about? Hey, how far is Mississippi from Atlanta? Well, I don't know all that. Probably about an hour flight. What y 'all? Y 'all want to go to the game? I do not. No, I'm good. Oh, my bad.

17:15Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. No, I'm good. I'm good on that.

17:22Shannon Sharpe:Look, Trinidad champions. We saw him last year. remember that game he had against Georgia and he played phenomenal. And he's been phenomenal. And he got the starting job because the starter got Nick. He got in there and didn't give it back. That's what happens. If I, if the, oh, this notion that you cannot lose your starting job because of injury, you absolutely can. If that guy comes in there and he's playing better than you, then when you were in there playing, that's his job. What are we talking about?

17:54Joe Johnson:especially if you got the hot hand now if you if you this is the thing though um if the person that gets hurt if he's if he's miles ahead better than the person that comes in form then there's a chance you get your job back yes but if the if the if the playing field is somewhat even and there's really no difference and the production is still the same with the person that's backing you up oh you definitely lost your job hey listen i i don't know i don't know if it's necessarily that if a guy gets hurt, you know, he gets his job back. If he's clearly better than him, I just think it's momentum, Uncle Ocho, with the team.

18:31It's like, hell, if you go down and we win four in a row, I mean, come on, you come back. You know what I mean? Like, we have a chemistry and continuity that's going on right now with us winning ballgames. Hey, man, I don't know. As a coach, them tough decisions that you got to make, bro.

18:49Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, and you don't want to upset that. Look, you got to be, I mean, I'm trying to think who, like, a Patrick Mahomes or Joe Burrow, you got to be one of those guys to keep your job if somebody played well. But, no, this was a great game. This was the best game of the weekend. You know, I thought going into the weekend, I thought maybe, you know, Oregon, the Oregon game against Boise State, that was a really good game. It was a back-and-forth ball game. Boise jumped out on them. Michigan was – I mean, the last play was exciting. But the game as a whole wasn't exciting. This game, I mean, from basically the kick of the second half all the way through, this game had you on the edge of your seat.

19:36Shannon Sharpe:You thought Ole Miss had control of it and Louisville came back, come storming back. I might be a little surprised that Ole Miss didn't go for two. you are at the end I was thinking about that but I was like man they ain't gonna do that I maybe maybe maybe if it was less time on the clock Ocho you think I think the thing what really hurt them is that they had burned all their timeouts because they couldn't get to the line I mean hell they tried to run a play and time's running off and they got motion going and they burned all their timeouts and they burned their last time out on that two-point play because he wanted to make sure they tied the game it was 22-24 and they got the two point conversion, but they had to burn their last time out in the third quarter.

20:18Shannon Sharpe:So in a situation like that, you're like, oh man. Well, you asking for it. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Go ahead, Joe. I ain't never seen so many quarterback, well, I ain't never seen so many passes with guys all in they face. It seemed like they were throwing like, just throwing cats open. You know what I mean? Like in that fourth quarter, a couple of them touchdowns, hell, I don't even know how he seen the receiver. Yeah, Keen Holtz, he threw the A. He was dealing. He was throwing that mean guys blowing assignments. He had – what's the number one? Trey Richardson. He had him open early and overshot him.

20:55Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, he did. He did. He had him open early. He did. He come back, got him again, single high safety, did do a great job of – late in the ball game, he did out and up. He was scrambling, running back, running to the flat. He see the guy driving downhill. He turned it up to the sideline, and Keenho's did a great job of hitting him. That was smart. That was a great play. Great play. Hey, hold on, hold on. As a receiver, though, when the quarterback throw it to you and you wide open like that and they overthrow you a little bit, Uncle Ocho, they mess with you a little bit mentally? No, I'm just like, damn.

21:28Shannon Sharpe:You put that on me. Like, when you wide open, Joe, you just want the guy to put it on you. Even if the guy comes and tackle me. Because that's a 30-yard, 40-yard catch as opposed to an incompletion because you wanted a touchdown and you were trying to leave me. just just hit you that what but it's a lot easier said than done those are tough ones when the guy's wide ass wide open oh that's the toughest one to complete and it's the toughest one to catch because you like oh yeah man i got this thing in the back and how do i catch it oh do i catch it in my hands do i catch it in my body you get all that stuff start running through your mind joe when you got too much time yeah The next thing you know the ball is up on you before you know it is on the turd like, oh man.

22:10Shannon Sharpe:Damn. Notre Dame overcomes sluggish start to beat Wisconsin 41-13 at Lambeau Field. 25:25Shannon Sharpe:Second half, CJ Kekar threw two touchdown passes. Aneas Williams ran for 90 yards and two more scores. This was the first college game at Lambeau Field since 2016 when Wisconsin upset fifth-ranked LSU 16-14. Yeah, Wisconsin, they hung as long as they could.

25:44Joe Johnson:Hey, until maybe the second quarter. Second half, for real. Second half. Yes. I mean, once Notre Dame went up, it was 10-10 at the top of the second. And then it was before the first half ended. Before it ended, Notre Dame went up 13-10. Yeah. Point on after the half. It was a wrap. They got a pick six. That killed him. That was it there. Yeah, that pick six killed him. That was a wrap. I tell you, that would take the sale. It went right out your sale there. Yeah, yeah.

26:21Shannon Sharpe:Once they got that pick six, it was over. Yeah. They quarterback look good, though. Carr look good, 239 passing yard. 19 to 29, Joe, 239, two touchdowns. They ran the ball 32 times for a 111. Marcus Freeman, you don't think we know, but we know you got that Revan in your hair. You know, the old preacher they got it. Yeah, you got that Revan in there. What are you going to do now? It was kind of clean, though. Look, I know you got Asian in your blood and they here stay dark for a long period of time, But you can't fool somebody that used to have that have that rib in his hair, that thing jet black.

26:55Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, yeah.

26:56Joe Johnson:Hey, I think I might get that, huh? What's that? Like, you know, like Mr. Freeman got. For what, for a bald head? Nah, like, you know, sometimes I wish I had waves, Uncle Joe. Well, you ain't got it. Nah, nah, nah. I mean, I can give me a hair piece, a hair piece. Nah, nah, nah, don't do it. It ain't worth it, bro.

27:16Shannon Sharpe:All right, my bad. Nah, just let that go, Ocho. Okay, not bad. But no. But look, Notre Dame, look. Notre Dame believed they can win a national championship. They felt very slighted that they didn't get an opportunity to play for the national championship last year by making the college football playoff. They were so upset. They were so distraught about that. They said, we ain't going nowhere. We declined all. We know Notre Dame travel. Very well. Look, they got their own. They got their own little gig on NBC. Yeah. Hey, them jerseys were sharp, though. I got to give them credit. Notre Dame had some jerseys on.

27:50Shannon Sharpe:I said, oh, y 'all out there, I tried to outdo Oregon today, huh, with them jerseys.

27:54Joe Johnson:Hey, you know what? I had an appreciation for Wisconsin coming out with a different look, as opposed to what we're normally used to seeing them have. I enjoyed the red. I enjoyed the red with the metallic silver. That was pretty dope. Hey, hey, hey, them gold helmets with them gold shoes. Come on, man, ain't nothing like that. That thing was spark.

28:10Shannon Sharpe:Hey, man. And the patches, the patches looked like they were chrome or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I said, okay, Notre Dame. Because that's a far cry from Notre Dame. I don't know when they started putting the names on the back of their jersey because Notre Dame, I don't know. Did they always? I know they were just like very common. Right. You know what I'm saying? Hey, them big boys, they tried to move people out of the way, just gold, black shoes, kind of like Penn State. Yeah. Just plain, just blah. But, boy, they be moving something. Back in the day, they used to move something. Yeah. Notre Dame used to be held back in the 70s, early 80s.

28:46Shannon Sharpe:Look at that. You see what I'm saying, Joe? He got that freak in there. He just got that old Beijing. He probably got that 5710. Hey, hey, hey.

28:59Joe Johnson:That line up sharp now.

29:01Shannon Sharpe:Oh, yeah, that line up. Hey, but you put that Beijing in there and get that, he got that, that's called that Oriental black. Yeah, he got 5710 Beijing. I know what it is, because O'Shea used to put it in there. Yeah, he got that. You see that like that? Yeah, he just put that, yeah. What, up here? Yeah. Okay, okay. He embracing his gray hairs now, man. I'm happy for you, bro. Not in his beard, not in his head.

29:30Hey. Yeah, yeah, he got that freaking now. Yeah. That just for me.

29:34Shannon Sharpe:He got that 57 tick. Y 'all look it up. Yeah, yeah, hey, he got it. Okay, I'm gonna leave it alone. I ain't gonna say no more. I ain't gonna say no more. I ain't gonna blow his cover. Cause people that know the name don't even know. They think that's here, natural. But everybody that's high complexion, they know exactly what's going on.

29:56Shannon Sharpe:Now he got that wash, he ain't got the spray. Cause see that spray, when you start sweating, that thing go all on your shirt. See he got that wash. Wait, hold on, it start dripping? Yeah, if you do the spray, it will start dripping. The wash will set longer and it won't drip. because you put that thing in there, you leave that thing for about 20 minutes, that thing go all the way down. Who's sitting the drop? Is that mine, Ash?

30:24Shannon Sharpe:Nah, you good. Oh, okay. I thought somebody said no signal. But Notre Dame look good. Notre Dame look good. We're going to find out a lot as they step up in competition. We're going to find out a lot about LSU. We're going to find out they got that gauntlet. I don't know if they got Georgia, but obviously Alabama is on the schedule. Ole Miss is on the schedule. Hey, you come out of the SEC this year, you would have done something. Because you got Texas. Look where Texas is ranked. Look where Georgia is ranked. Look where Ole Miss is ranked. Look where LSU is ranked. Alabama's ranked. A &M is ranked.

31:00Shannon Sharpe:If you come out of there this year, you would have done something. Yeah. You would have accomplished a lot. But, oh, Notre Dame looked good. I thought CJ Karp, he handled the offense well his second year. He's done an unbelievable job. Wisconsin just was outmatched over man. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, it's not that complex. Sometimes a team is just better than you. This was a classic situation. Notre Dame was just better than Wisconsin.

35:20Joe Johnson:Fam, you, did they win or lose today? You know what, Unc? Fam, you lost today, right? Fam, you lost today, but let me tell you something Uncle Joe, Fam, you might have lost today but they put up a fight, they put up a better fight in the season in the A.C.M. Zero

35:37Shannon Sharpe:In sports, in the world of sports that's what i love about sports so much yeah it's a very short the menu the menu yes sir it only got wins and losses on it yeah take your time did your team win or did they lose we lost i said that but at least what unlike y 'all i don't need you to add anymore i don't need you to add anything else just give me what i ordered i got order to win or order the loss now you trying to bring water now you trying to bring condiments i ain't ordered that i ain't ordered that i told you what was gonna happen you get if you get beat by three scores you got your butt handed to you

36:12Joe Johnson:you look y 'all lost 87-0 you have no room to talk about anybody losing we lost 87-0 what did you

36:20Shannon Sharpe:what happened to y 'all did y 'all win or lose we lost huh so let me ask you a question do y 'all got a do y 'all got a one in the l column yeah we do we got a one in the l column yeah what's I was confused about this.

36:32Joe Johnson:Yo, El, that's a different kind of column. Go ahead. Yeah, that's embarrassing. 87? Y 'all might not score 87 points the entire season.

36:42Shannon Sharpe:All I know is that y 'all got beat 31 to 13. And if they hadn't had the delay for like three, four hours, it might have been worse than that. Them boys didn't even want to come.

36:53Joe Johnson:We might have lost because of the delay.

36:57Shannon Sharpe:Y 'all were going to get y 'all last two.

36:59Joe Johnson:things off because everybody everybody was already warmed up and you know you cool down have to warm up again then you go play so things might have been thrown off a little bit but we put up a better fight than savannah state did when they played you see what you say hey man ojo huh that boy had 210 rushing yards on y 'all man hey hey well we couldn't stop the run boy he was not he was toting that thing. Now you see

37:22Shannon Sharpe:they had two hold on South Carolina State fam you. He didn't rush for that many yards on us. They rushed for that many yards on the team on us. That dude carried the ball. I was like damn. I was like look at Derrick Henry. I thought that was Derrick Henry for a second. I was like Derrick Henry give some give some touches

37:46Joe Johnson:give some touches early. It's all good. His name was, what was his name? Mason. Mason Pickett. Pickett Hicks. 17 for 210.

37:57Shannon Sharpe:Ooh, 17 for 210.

37:59Joe Johnson:17 for 210.

38:01Shannon Sharpe:Not damn near 15 yards of carry.

38:06Joe Johnson:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Listen, he wear that number one jersey for a reason now. You know, anybody that wear number one, you already know that's the gangster. Come on. Hello, hello. Number one. Hey, hey, hey. when you run the ball like that, you control everything, bro. You control everything. That boy was toting that pill. You hear me? Hey, listen. There's no hard feeling. Congratulations to South Carolina State. You don't even care that y 'all lost, huh? You just glad that y 'all stuck around. Hey, Joe, listen. I don't have time to be emotional right now. We lost the game. But we live another day.

38:45Joe Johnson:Now, what I don't like, Unc, is the fact that we lost to South Carolina State, and now we might as well stay here in Miami. Ain't no need to go back to Tallahassee, because now we got to play UM. Y 'all got the U? Man, we got UM next, though. Damn.

38:59Shannon Sharpe:Malachi Tony might have 300 yards received. Hey, Unc, listen.

39:06Joe Johnson:Malachi, hey, he might not catch the ball. What? Come on, Ocho. Keep it, Juan. You got to keep it. Come on now. Listen, I'm going to go talk to the players that fan you tomorrow. I know they might have tomorrow off. I don't know. Hey, would it make sense to go back to Tallahassee if you got to play, if you got to come right back down?

39:23Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, they ain't got it like that, man. They can't be standing in a hotel for no whole week. Man, what the hell you think you got going on?

39:29Joe Johnson:Hey, hey, the Rattlers going to – we're going to put up 21. We're going to put up 21 on UM. We're going to put up 21. I bet you won't bet that. What? I won't bet, fam, you won't score 21? Yeah, you ain't betting that. Now that gets no UM, man, you tripping. Joe, listen to me, Joe. You don't know what it's like to be a rattler, man. You don't know what it's like to be a rattler. Boy, we fight. We don't care who the competition is. We fight. You hear me? We going to strike.

39:59Shannon Sharpe:Joe, fam, you had 30 carries for minus one yard. What? 30 for minus one? Yeah, the grass. Minus one yard.

40:11Joe Johnson:Joe, the grass is wet, Joe.

40:13Shannon Sharpe:It was Redford-Sackel-Low to stay too. You make it seem like they were playing in the dome.

40:20Joe Johnson:The grass is wet. Don't worry about it, we gonna be all right. We gonna be all right. But hey, no, no, on a serious note, congrats to Coach Man, actually coming on the show. And I'm still thinking about some of the quotes. I wrote them down on my notepad, on my phone. Man, he was phenomenal. He was a phenomenal, it remind me like if Obama wasn't the president, but was the head coach of the football team. That's what having Coach on here reminded me of.

40:49Shannon Sharpe:That was the most cool black coaches like that. I mean, when you go back and you study them, you look at Coach Jeffries that was at South Carolina State. You look at Coach Robinson that was at Grambling. You look at Coach Gordon that was at Jackson State. Yeah. They fathers. Yeah. They coaching that man a father. Yeah. You can appreciate that because you know they sincerely, they want you to be the best representation of that university. Yeah. They know the cards are stacked against you. Yeah. So whether you're going to the NFL or you're going out into the real world, but we're not going to use that as no excuse, guys.

44:58Shannon Sharpe:10 has released a statement after Michigan defeated Western Michigan in the controversial Herod Mary attempt with one second left on the clock. Following a video review, it determined that Western Michigan number 18 started his jump from an established out-of-bounds position. Left foot made contact with the ball with one second remaining on the clock. As shown in provided video of what was viewed during the replay process, a side-by-side view of the play and the game clock using direct shot of the game clock in the stadium was used to determine the final ruling.

45:31Joe Johnson:So that was the correct call. It was a call. I didn't know that part. I didn't know he came back from inbounds. Obviously, you know you can't touch the ball first if you step out of bounds. But now that I've heard this, where I've seen a lot of people say, oh, they cheated for Michigan. But after hearing this come out, now I get a better understanding why they put that back on the clock. I think the explanation could have been a little better from the referee, then people would have a better understanding on why they put one second back up there. Yeah. And what's the odds, though, Uncle Joe? Even if they do put a second on the clock, right, and you redo the Hail Mary, the odds of catching it is like winning the damn lotto.

46:11Yeah.

46:12Shannon Sharpe:That's unfortunate, though. The NCAA rule 4-2-3A, a ball not in player's control other than a kick that scores a field goal, is out of bounds when it touches the ground. A player, a game official, or anything else is out of bounds or that outside the boundary line, and thus the clock is stopped. So once his foot touched out of bounds, he touched the ball, clock stopped, not when he hit the ground.

46:39Joe Johnson:A lot of people saying they got robbed. You got to bat that ball down. I'm not going to joke. You got to. Somebody got to bat that ball down.

46:47Shannon Sharpe:Well, if you think about it.

46:48Joe Johnson:Hail Mary? Come on. If you think there was nobody, they let the guy get inside.

46:55Shannon Sharpe:They let him get inside position. So he just boxed out.

46:58Joe Johnson:Yeah. And went up.

46:59Shannon Sharpe:There was nobody in front of him. Y 'all just let him go up and catch it. Y 'all was like.

47:07Shannon Sharpe:Y 'all do realize if he catch that ball in the end zone, that's a touchdown, right?

47:10Joe Johnson:Yeah. That's demoralizing.

47:11Shannon Sharpe:And then you try to take it out of his hand once he done got it. Too late. Too late at that point. Too late. Too late. Too late. That's demoralizing. Hey, that hurt, bro. Yeah, yeah. That hurt. And so they say all the cameras that's used in the broadcast are used for the replay, including the camera on the game clock and sync using the strobe and ensure all cameras are aligned. If you're Western Michigan, you say we got holes. If you're Michigan, you say they got it right. If you had money bet on Michigan, you probably did. You still lost because they didn't cover.

47:44Joe Johnson:Yeah. You know what? Maybe Michigan isn't as good as we think they are.

47:49Shannon Sharpe:No, I didn't think Michigan was going to be good. So the Underwood kid, I don't think he was worth the money that he got, the NIL money? Well, I mean, you had to pay him because every school in the country wanted him.

48:03Joe Johnson:Wanted him, yeah.

48:05Shannon Sharpe:So to keep him from going, sometimes, Joe, you got to overpay. It's just like a house. A house that's prime location, whatever you list it for, you're probably going to go over there if you want to get it. so they wanted him. Damn. In order for him to be able to justify that 12 million,

48:25Joe Johnson:he's going to have to play way above what those numbers say. Regardless of the support you cast, when you pay someone 12 million, that kind of money in college, you have to take them where they want to go. Hey, I'm going to keep it real. Onus is on you. I don't know if it's a kid in college football or basketball who'll be worth 12 million, bro. That's -

48:50Shannon Sharpe:12 million for four years. Yeah, for four years, Joe. Nah, 12 million while he's there in college. And then when you leave, you know, it turns into what you call him. Also, because he got to stay three years. So he going to get that 12 million over a course of three years. Okay, that ain't bad. He might stay longer than that, considering the way he playing. He might want to get a fifth year.

49:10Joe Johnson:Hey, you know what? What happened if he wants to - Is that NIL voided? if he wants to transfer somewhere else.

49:16Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, I'm sure they probably got parameters in there. Because after they see him, because you saw Mensa at Duke, he left. And, you know, so that's, you know, people are going to start, hey, I'm not paying you to think you'll let you take this money with you now.

49:32Joe Johnson:Hey, the funny thing about it is if he pulls a Mensa what Duke did and puts himself in an environment with that kind of talent, like Mensa did with UM, then we might really see him flourish. as opposed to being in Michigan and have to be damn near perfect because you don't have that kind of superior talent around you. Oh, the skill positions, aren't they great in Michigan? Receivers, tight ends, none of that? If they were like that, and I mean no disrespect in any way, all the players that are superior and elite at their respective schools, they can put up week one. Oh, okay. You know what I think, Ocho?

50:06Shannon Sharpe:I think when you play a guy, when you pay a guy the kind of money that they're paying Bryce Underwood, he's supposed to elevate them. Yeah.

50:13Joe Johnson:Yeah. That's hard when you're that young, huh? That's hard. Especially when you, I mean, that's hard when you're that young to be able to elevate everybody else, especially at that position.

50:24Shannon Sharpe:I'm paying you for something now. Like Joe say, we, we, we, what we, so what we get, so what are we getting for? For what we pay for? What we get? I understand. Now I wanted, I didn't want you to, I didn't want you to go to Ohio state or some of these other schools, but I also expect you to deliver. That's why I gave you that money. That's why you had an opportunity to talk to Tom Brady. Yeah. That's why you got a head start that most 18-year-olds don't get. You got a head start on this thing called life.

50:54Joe Johnson:Yes, sir.

50:55Shannon Sharpe:Even if you don't make the NFL, you got a head start. You still should be able to come out of the way with$3 million. You hear me? Even after you buy your mom. I'm just saying, you know what I'm saying, Joe? Even if you buy your mom, maybe more, but you buy your mom a house, you're about to get you a nice little car, you know, get you a nice little condo or something like that. That's all you need. When your college career is over, you still should have$3 million, say, banked up.

51:20Joe Johnson:He's going to be all right, though. He's going to be all right. I hope so. He's definitely going to make it. I just – they got to get some – no, it's still too early. It's only week one. I want to see how they look the rest of the season, especially when they play against, you know, elite competition.

51:35Shannon Sharpe:Ohio State. Yeah, Ohio State. Yeah. Yeah, they see how they look. Upper-level competition. Yeah. Because you struggle against Western Michigan. Woo. Mike Pereira says NFL officials are supposed to use the clock the public can see on reviews if there's a discrepancy. Now, I don't know if the college is under that same type of agreement that they have to use a clock that the public can see. This is what we know. When your team loses, there is not an explanation that can be given that will satisfy you. When your team wins, you don't care about no explanation. We won. That's just the way it is. and it's always been that way and it's always going to be that way if I lose a game on you I ain't trying to hear nothing you say at all man they got it right that was the right call man I ain't trying to hear that

52:23Joe Johnson:and matter of fact the public not trying to hear it people that are fans Michigan the first thing they're going to say nah that bull drive we got robbed we got robbed

52:35Shannon Sharpe:it's the same thing

52:41Shannon Sharpe:in the Super Bowl when Bradford the fourth when he grabbed Juju the official said I mean even Bradford came out and said it on his own mouth said I tugged him I was just hoping they didn't see it and they still said he had to say that no he didn't

52:57Joe Johnson:that was an egregious shove and hold yes like come on

53:04Shannon Sharpe:and they're talking about well you can't call it that If you can't call that at that time of the game, when can you call the hole? When can you call the hole?

53:10Joe Johnson:Yeah.

53:11Shannon Sharpe:He held him. He prohibited. He optioned away from him. And to keep him, he tugged him. It ain't that complicated. But the Eagles lost the game. And they was like, nah, nah, nah. It wasn't a hole. Even though Bradford the forward said, yeah, I grabbed him. He tried to get away from it. I tugged him, hoping they wouldn't see it. That's just the way it is. but these are like you said Ocho they try to Hail Mary the first time they put it there you're like damn and Bryce you got to keep the ball in bounds yeah

53:50Joe Johnson:can't throw it out can't throw it out gotta get your team a chance

53:54Shannon Sharpe:if he catches out of bounds it's incomplete normally what you want to do Ocho you want to try to put it at the front of the end zone so cause if it gets tipped somebody got a chance yeah right that's what you have you have the trailer that comes because if they bat it down you remember they batted it down in uh was that new orleans and somebody in houston texas somebody batted it down they batted it right to the guy but then but then i think about uncle

54:24Joe Johnson:joe i think about the chances i don't know what the statistics are or the percentage of the chances if you heave at half court when the clock shot is going down. The chances of hitting that is really not that good. You throw a Hail Mary, the chances of hitting that is really not that good, especially with that many people down there with opportunity to catch or bat the ball down.

54:46Shannon Sharpe:I think the half court shot is probably easier because these guys practice that. Ocho, when we practice the Hail Mary, ain't nobody jumping. They bat it down one time, they let us jump up and catch it another time. Oh, yeah. Think about how many times, Joe, how many times you and your teammates have practiced shooting the ball from half court. Y 'all betting money. Y 'all bet$100. Y 'all betting$50. There you go. Hey, after every practice,$100 at half court. It don't matter. If it's seven people in it, 10 people in it, hell, it could be two people in it. We shooting for$100 half court shot. Because, look, you never know.

55:18You never know when those heaves are going to come into play, bro. And you know what I mean? And I've seen guys. Hell, I've made a couple myself. You know, make some half-court shots because you got to practice them crazy shots, bro. Especially when you get in the postseason. I know guys don't like messing up their percentages. But, hey, man, sometimes you need a heave to go down just to gain a little rhythm or something, you know?

55:40Shannon Sharpe:Hey, Joe, do you think the boys really care about their percentage? Hell, yeah. Hell, Ocho, why you think some guys won't throw the Hail Mary? They throw the check down. Yeah. They don't want to mess up their QBR. Yeah. Yeah, Ocho. That's why cats at the end of the shot, at the end of quarters and all that, they can have a nice heave. They like, man, I ain't shooting a damn heave here. That's gonna mess up my field goal percentage.

56:04Joe Johnson:Yeah, guys ain't doing that. I ain't think they would think about that, especially in game play. Yeah.

56:11Shannon Sharpe:And you ain't finna give me the ball on no turnover either. We running out the clock here, take this rookie. You finna get this turnover. You ain't finna put that on my resume. I ain't finna have no turnover. Hey, hey, I'd have been on teams where guys would be dribbling the ball and they're going to dribble out the clock, Ocho, and they'll throw it to you real quick with like two seconds on so you can get the turnover. Yeah. Yeah. Hey, hey, hey, boy, it's a cold game. Hey, when you see that clock winding down at the end of the game, you better run and get to the corner somewhere because a dude will try to throw you the ball and give you that turnover.

56:43Shannon Sharpe:Right. That's funny. But, yeah, Michigan fans, I'm sure Michigan fans are ecstatic. and Western Michigan fans are not too excited about that because they said we got holes, man. I don't care what they say about no clock. I don't care nothing about no rules. I don't care anything about that. All I know is that ball hit the dirt and it says 0-0 and y 'all added some time back on there. And for the rest of the season, Uncle Ocho, Western Michigan, they going to remember this one, boy. This one going to hurt. Ooh-wee.

57:21Shannon Sharpe:after the embarrassment, after the embarrassing loss, Clemson received against LSU. Fans are already trying to see how much it would cost them to get devil Sweeney out of town. Sweeney's buyout at Clemson would amount to about 57 million if the university fired him without cause on or before December 31st, 2026. After the game, Sweeney refused to say the loss had anything to do with lack of budget. We didn't do enough football stuff well enough. I'm not sitting around here judging other people on what their resources are or what they can do it is what it is it's our job to be the best we can be and be what we're not we weren't that tonight and what we have is my job to get us better it's over completely they gonna get him out of there

58:09Joe Johnson:absolutely Joe

58:10Shannon Sharpe:absolutely

58:11Joe Johnson:with all the things that he said before NIL saying that we would never do that Listen, in order to keep the This is not college football anymore This is a business So you have to conduct yourself in just that A business, you gotta evolve with the time The times are different now You gotta get people to come to Clemson just because it's Clemson And what they've done in the past Hey, that's okay, God don't pay me the rest of my money I'll go home, I ain't tripping

58:35Shannon Sharpe:He hasn't been the same since Brent Venables left You look at him before Brent Venables You look at him after Brent Venables Brent Venables now is in Oklahoma that defense, look at the guys, all the guys. Remember those guys and Tony Elliott. Tony Elliott, if I'm not mistaken, is at Virginia. Yes. Look at the guys they were putting in the pros when Brent Venables was a D coordinator and Tony Elliott was the offensive coordinator. Yeah. It ain't been close though, Joe. Yeah, you're right. You're right. It ain't even been close. There ain't no sense in holding it. They haven't.

59:06Joe Johnson:You think it's too late for the Poofs to step in and kind of help them out if it doesn't go well this season?

59:12Shannon Sharpe:Sometimes it just runs at court. is runs its course.

59:15Joe Johnson:Right.

59:16Shannon Sharpe:I think Dabo Sweeney has run its course. So look, for sake of argument, if they get Dabo out of there, you think they're gonna bring, y 'all think they're gonna bring in a big name?

59:28Joe Johnson:Oh, they'll definitely try. They got to. How's you gonna get the players to come, huh? You got to have a big name. I'm not sure what name is out there that can be attractive.

59:40Shannon Sharpe:I mean, because I look, put it to you like this. Let's just say for the sake of argument, there's a wide receiver, there's a player. And I got 500 ,000. I can go to LSU. I can go to Ohio State. Where am I going though, Joe? Am I going to Clemson?

59:58Joe Johnson:You're right. Well, hold on, hold on now. I can get you to come to Clemson outside of those big three that you just named. You overpay me. The money's right.

1:00:07Shannon Sharpe:Yes. But if it's comparable money and I'm looking at what position do I play? who put the most wide receivers into the pros? That's Ohio State. That's Alabama. That's LSU. Yeah. Who put the most D linemen into the pros? That's Alabama. That's Ohio State. Right. So I'm looking at it like that. When was the last time they had first round pick at D line? The Reese kid that's at New Orleans, when last time they had a wide receiver go in the first round? Right. Kids weigh that stuff now. Yeah. That's why all these receivers, where they go? Where are these receivers? Where they been going the last couple of years?

1:00:44Shannon Sharpe:They go to Ohio State. Marvin Harrison Jr. was the third pick. Cardinal Tate, the fourth pick. Jeremiah Smith is going to be a top three pick. Top two, top two. Chris Henry Jr. Yeah. And you look at all those receivers that's already in Jigba and Buka. All those guys. Olave, Garrett Wilson.

1:01:10Joe Johnson:but but i also will say this uncle joe and i've always still noticed honestly and you know you say it all the time especially when it comes to players going to the draft it's not it's not how high you go it's where you go yeah for sure it is about players really focus on going to school sometimes you have to sit and wait but i say it's always your play it's always your play at the school you're at not the school you actually go to because you can go anywhere if you know how to If you know, if you, if you him, if you like that, it's going to show up. Whether you go to Ohio State, if you that, if you that boy, you're going to be that boy at Ohio State.

1:01:44Joe Johnson:You're going to be that boy at LSU. You're going to be that boy at Clemson. It shouldn't matter. I agree with you, Ocho. I'm the same way. Even with basketball. I feel like if you can play, I don't care if you playing under the damn bridge over there. Okay. Them folk going to come find you, man. I'm serious. Them folk going to find you. They going to find you if you got some game. It's not like, you know, 20, 30 years ago, bro. You know, I think with social media, it's a wide variety of different athletes or players on how to get engaged with them. Like back then, you couldn't do that. Nowadays, it's so much easier to see a cat who may be playing on a lower level, but he's putting up them numbers.

1:02:26So I just think we're in really, really different times.

1:02:30Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, it's time for Debo to move on. You can't win there no more. Move on. Like you say, you got so much to say. You had so much to say about everything that was going on. You chimed in. If they don't like what's going on, they should go to another country. If you can't win ballgames, you need to get your ass out of Clemson. It ain't complicated. It's not complicated. They pay you to win, and you're not winning. You do all that talking, all that blustering, and all this and everything. And so everything might be great in the world, but they ain't great in Clemson. In your job, they pay you big bucks with no whammies, $11,$12,$13 million a year to win ballgames.

1:03:09Shannon Sharpe:And you hadn't won enough ballgames in a long period of time. Not even close. That what happened? That what happened? That?

1:03:22Shannon Sharpe:Probably, probably because you got those national championships and you had Clemson at the top of the food chain for a long period of time. That's giving you grace over the last two to three years because Clemson, man, come on, let's be real.

1:03:40Shannon Sharpe:Clemson ain't been there for a minute. Yeah. And Clemson used to have, hey, they had Sammy Watkins. They had D-Hop. They had Martavius Bryant. Yeah. Ooh. Yeah.

1:03:54Shannon Sharpe:Sammy Watkins. Yeah, Sammy Watkins. Sammy was first. Then D-Hop. Martavius Bryant. Right. Hold on, hold on. Hold on, didn't D-Hop play with Sammy, did him and Sammy Watkins play together? Sammy Watkins play together? Yeah. Oh, yeah, them boys cut up over there, boy. Yeah. But they ain't cutting up no more.

1:04:15Joe Johnson:Hey, they told me, they told me the two receivers that's at Clemson right now, and I know they only scored two points. They gave me comparisons that they are equivalent to Jamar Chase and Tee Higgins at the Bengals. What? Now, when I saw it on Twitter, I'm saying, okay, if they're that good, that is the game they should have showed up in. So I didn't see it. So maybe they are that good, but I didn't see it. Maybe, Chad, y 'all know the two receivers that they're comparing. Oh, they're similar to Jamar and Tee in Cincinnati, but I didn't see it when they played against LSU. Hey, LSU, you got a nice –

1:04:50Shannon Sharpe:Do you know what Chase and Higgins – Do you know what Chase and – oh, you said in Cincinnati. I thought you were talking about Jetta and – Chase. What do you call them when they was in LSU? No, no. I think them boys had that before the touchdown.

1:05:04Joe Johnson:Yeah, I know that. That's what I'm saying. I'm saying they told me the two. I tweeted before the game started against LSU. Who told you that? And, you know, a few people. I obviously must have been. Man, get your ass off Twitter.

1:05:15Shannon Sharpe:Didn't I tell you Twitter is a cesspool? It's not reality.

1:05:21Shannon Sharpe:One guy had like 20 touchdowns. The other guy had like 17, 18 touchdowns. You see the number Chase and gentlemen putting up in college? Absolutely. Crazy. Absolutely.

1:05:34Shannon Sharpe:Man. Hey, hold on, hold on. Hey, hold on, hold on. Hey, what did DB for LSU do, number five? DJ Pickett? Yeah, what did he end up doing? Who got the number five? I ain't, man, I was in route, and then we was on the air when they was playing. I would check him out. Guess what, we get an opportunity to check him out when they play Ole Miss.

1:05:54Joe Johnson:We got plenty more game to check him out.

1:05:56Shannon Sharpe:Yeah, we check him out.

1:05:56Joe Johnson:Hold on, they don't know. LSU play Ohio State? No, huh?

1:06:00Shannon Sharpe:Uh-uh.

1:06:01Joe Johnson:Nah.

1:06:02Shannon Sharpe:Nah, the game this week is Ohio State-Texas.

1:06:05Joe Johnson:That's going to be a good one.

1:06:06Shannon Sharpe:That's the big game. And then the following week, that's when you got LSU Ole Miss.

1:06:11Joe Johnson:Mm-hmm. And the fact that they got them two – wait, hold on. Who LSU got this week, week two? Probably the cream puff. Probably, yeah, I was getting ready to say that. Somebody easy.

1:06:24Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. I don't know LSU. They beat the brakes off of Clemson.

1:06:37Shannon Sharpe:The Texas Longhorns almost lost Arch Manning before the season even started, even before he stepped on the field. Watch the video of him tripping over a videographer. Take a look at this, guys. All that damn smoke, huh?

1:06:53Shannon Sharpe:Damn.

1:06:58Shannon Sharpe:He disappeared, didn't he? Somebody best ride to get fired.

1:07:04Joe Johnson:He tripped over somebody's foot, the people standing on the wall.

1:07:08Shannon Sharpe:Oh, shit. If you can see it, you blow it up, he stumbled over somebody. Look, that's the videographer that was shooting up. Go look at it. He literally stumbled over somebody. He ran over the top of somebody. Wow. Wow. Yeah, they gotta fix that.

1:07:27Shannon Sharpe:How you hurt the man before he even get on the damn thing? I'm glad Arch is all right, man. But, hey, he was just fine because he throws for 20 or 27, 305, and some touchdowns. Did have a pick.

1:07:45Shannon Sharpe:Arch said, damn, what happened? Ain't nothing worse than stumbling when you don't know something there. Man, after work, like, oh, man. And you get mad. I'm sure Arch was mad. Man, you know how you stumble. Even if you bite your own tongue, you get mad. You stub your own toe, you get mad. So imagine doing that, you run over somebody and fall.

1:08:06Joe Johnson:Yeah. What the hell are you doing? Hey, and the worst part about it is when you do stub your toe or you stumble, you're going down the stairs and slip real quick. The body's always relaxed. Yeah. The body's always relaxed. That make it even worse.

1:08:20Shannon Sharpe:Yeah. You can't breathe. You're talking about, I won't smoke.

1:08:30Shannon Sharpe:No, but I'm glad to see Arch is okay. I'm sure he'll probably laugh at about it. I probably had Sark probably put that on the camera and say, what happened? Where did he go? I see our quarterback running out the tunnel, then all of a sudden he disappeared.

1:08:45Shannon Sharpe:Roger Goodell has just signed a four-year extension with the NFL. At the end of the newest deal, Goodell will be nearly 72 years of age and have served the commissioner as an NFL commissioner for 24 years. Goodell's contract has not been disclosed. However, his last contract reportedly paid him$64 million per year, the same as Patrick Mahomes makes per year.

1:09:09Joe Johnson:That's the man at the top of the food chain. That's the man that has the most difficult job to do, Uncle Joe. A lot of people don't like it, but his job is difficult. obviously being a voice, what, for 32 owners? Yep. Yeah. Be the mouthpiece. Yeah, he's their mouthpiece. And obviously not really a fan of those, you know, publicly, especially fans of teams. But he just does what he's told to do from the 32 owners,

1:09:39Shannon Sharpe:and he's the bad guy.

1:09:41Joe Johnson:Anytime he comes to the podium, whether it's a draft or whether he has a speaking engagement, most of the time he gets booed.

1:09:47Shannon Sharpe:He does.

1:09:47Joe Johnson:and hey that it come with a job it come with the territory and a lot of people probably wouldn't understand understand it but i remember when he first came and he came in ruse with giant fists

1:09:57Shannon Sharpe:on he did hey he made it article 46 in his back pocket he had that article 46 yeah he made it okay hey can y 'all imagine how stressful his job is bro got to be got to be oh my god you never

1:10:13Joe Johnson:For sure, Joe.

1:10:15Shannon Sharpe:It's stressful for the simple fact, guys. I think a lot of his stress comes to do with public perception. Yes. When a player does something, they want the player held to a higher standard or held more accountable than if somebody did the same act in public, you know, a private citizen. Yeah, yeah. So, and plus, it's public. This guy, the guy in the NFL, he can be the number one player on the team or he can be the 33rd player or the 50th player on the team. He's an NFL player. And so he gets critiqued harsher. The fans want blood. They love him, but it's like, uh-uh, no, he should have known better.

1:10:53Shannon Sharpe:At the end of the day, no matter what you do, no matter how much money you make, you're still human. You have frailties. People think because you make a ton of money that everything that would cause you to run a file as a man just goes away. You don't have desires. You don't have anything. I'm like, he's still a man. Money don't change you from being a man. No. Money doesn't change you. Hey, you just have access. It means to probably possibly get you out of things more so than the typical average a male would be able to do. But you still have those same desires. You still have those same lusts, a lot of those same lusts you still want to do.

1:11:46Shannon Sharpe:You just have money to be able to do it on a grander scale. Yeah, that's it. But I like commission. I mean, Ocho, you know you've been around him. I've been around him. I like him. Yeah. I understand his job is hard. And people think, well, he doesn't want to suspend anybody. He just understands he has to.

1:12:06Joe Johnson:Yeah, he has no choice on the joke. It all comes down to also having to suspend people. When you mess up, you got to protect the shield. That's the number one rule. He has to be able to protect the shield. And players understand that. Now, he also understands that, you know, we're all human. We're going to make mistakes. And a lot of people judge, oh, you make this kind of money. Why would you be doing that? Or why would you be doing this? You know, a lot of people get stopped, you know, for drinking and driving. I mean, it's just they make mistakes. They make mistakes. And at times, you know, he has to come down and rule because he's not just protecting, not just the players themselves, not the team that the players are representing that they play for, but he's also protecting the NFL shield.

1:12:48Joe Johnson:You have to understand that. I mean, if you get to know him, which a lot of people don't, a lot of players, former players, maybe a few current, they might not like him. but you have to put yourself in his shoes and understand the job that he has to do it's tough yeah it's hard and i think that's why a lot of players don't like him i think our relationship is a little bit different because i enjoyed my time dealing with dealing with you know and i was one of the few that he couldn't control and i enjoyed being the villain during my time hey joe you know by the time we got to year six right no maybe five and gadel was in and i was getting fined over and over and over and I remember I remember the league office number being on being on on the FedEx of one of my fines and I called the league office and I asked to speak to Roger and he happened to be in and they said he will call you back so I gave my cell phone number and dude he called me back like 20 minutes 20 minutes later and I let him know I said listen I'm not even going to appeal this fine with miss with with you or Merton Hanks at the time but I'm letting you know ahead of time i'm going to be sending my fine money in a little bit early because as as much as you guys are trying to control the integrity of the game i feel i'm i feel the game should be played you know with joy i should be able to to celebrate and have fun doing so and so i'm just letting you know ahead of time that i'm not going to stop what i'm doing and i'll be saying if i know i have some coming up on the weekend i will be sending now that they I have an address.

1:14:18Joe Johnson:I'm gonna send my fine money in early. Yeah. But from year six and on, if I knew I had, I was gonna do some joke, I mailed it to the league office. If I didn't do anything, if I didn't score that week, I just told him, just hold that. Cause if I don't score this week, I'm gonna do something the next week. Hey, you ain't gotta waste your time sending me no fine. Hey, they fine you for wearing certain cleats, don't they? Oh, I had gold cleats, all arms.

1:14:43Shannon Sharpe:You gotta wear, you gotta wear color. You gotta be white. Yeah, you can't have more than... I mean, when I played, you couldn't have two colors. You couldn't have a three-color cleat.

1:14:52Joe Johnson:Yeah. Joe, I'm out there. Joe, I had the orange chin strap when we wore orange jerseys. We wore black jeans. I had the black chin strap. Joe, I was like, I was an optimist. I didn't care. I didn't care. Hey, Joe, remember the streamer towels? You're not supposed to wear streamer towels? I ain't wearing that thick old quarterback towel.

1:15:12Shannon Sharpe:No. But you remember, Ocho, everything that you see the NFL did, They got from the players players used to cut the towel. They didn't have those little stream without yeah They were their own towels the the thing that you have to put on the head. Yeah, we're in stocking cap. Yes So they like they do rags. So they like well, hold on There's a market for that merch merch Yeah, they know fans and want to wear stuff, want to see whatever the players wear. But, yeah, Joe, they'll find you. If your socks come down, you can't show no skin on your legs. You can't show, you know, the jersey needed to be tucked in.

1:15:52Shannon Sharpe:The jersey come out. They give you, like, one or two plays to tuck it back in. If you didn't, that's a$5 ,000 fine. That's me. Hey, that's the same thing with basketball. You got to come into the game with your shirt already tucked in. You used to couldn't wear all these different colors that y 'all see these guys wearing now, these lime greens with black jerseys. You used to couldn't do none of that, Uncle Ocho. You used to – you was only allowed to wear two types of colors. You know, you wear whites with your homes and you wear dark shoes with your ways. Now, hell, it don't matter. You can be wearing – you can be the Hawks and you can wear orange shoes.

1:16:31You know what I mean? It don't matter now. You know, they – hey, they let them kind of, you know, do what they kind of want. But like you said, when we talk about the merch, when they were doing the headbands, guys used to wear these big, thick headbands. What did the NBA do? They wouldn't start getting their own thick NBA headbands because everything that you wear, it needs to have that NBA logo, whether it's the socks. You like them knee-high socks pulled all the way up? Hell, we're going to get something made for you. Don't even worry about that. Yeah, you like your arm sleeve? Yeah, we're going to have that with the NBA logo on there.

1:17:01So y 'all right. Hey, everything is about merch. When they see. Leggings.

1:17:05Shannon Sharpe:Remember the leggings? that you can they come where they come out with the leggings yeah oh y 'all like y 'all like leggings

1:17:10Joe Johnson:huh okay yeah hey anything yeah anything they can monetize on you know that they would tell us okay you can't do that so we gonna make it so we can and then you be our model for it yeah hey hey they

1:17:26Shannon Sharpe:probably came out with the shikes didn't the nfl got their own jacy yeah when it's cold yes But the players started doing it before the NFL had them. Yeah, yeah. It was like, oh, y 'all like that? Y 'all thug it like that? Okay, we'll get up on you.
