In short
Katie Got Bands discusses her rise as a Chicago drill pioneer, her upbringing in Brownsville/39th Street, avoiding gangbanging despite drill culture, a gun case and time in jail, filing bankruptcy to escape a contract, label/business conflicts (including a 360 deal), substance use and quitting, and her return with a new project (“Sorry for the Kate” released 10/23/25). She also comments on drill’s impact on youth, female rap, and relationship/mental health boundaries.
Guest backgrounds
Katie Got Bands is a Chicago drill rapper who started rapping in 2011 at 17 (released “I Need a Hitter” at 18). She credits her cousin/producer “Block on the Track” for teaching her song format. She says her father was incarcerated for 27 years; she was raised by a single mother. She later filed bankruptcy and fought a gun case for years.
Key claims
“I Need a Hitter” was recorded in Block on the Track’s closet; the “gun” in her early video was a prop. She says she “doesn’t gangbang,” avoids posting people in videos, and doesn’t want violent image comparisons. She claims her lyrics didn’t lead to harm (“nobody died or got harmed because of my lyrics”). She says she filed bankruptcy to get out of her contract and won a federal court fight. She quit Percocets after fearing fentanyl deaths.
Notable examples
“I Need a Hitter” (meme/viral prop-gun photo); “Pop Out” featuring Louis (from label sessions); Gunplay collaboration (team reached out; video shot in Chicago); Sexy Red bringing her out in Chicago (Halloween; last-minute call). She mentions artists she’s been linked with (Dirk, LA Capone, Duck, Sosa) and her influence on newer female drill (including Aspen Cartier).

Energy for life. No Jumper, coolest podcast in the world. I'm in here today with my man Remo and we're sitting down with Katie. You feel me? The one and only Katie got bands in the building. How you feeling? I feel good. Yeah. I'm honored to be here. Well, you need to know, first and foremost, that in this building, we respect Katie Got Bands. We're all big fans of your music and everything over the years. So, yeah. Vice versa. Oh, yeah. It's a legendary one right here.
1:13You know what I'm saying? I've been waiting to get this one in. I'm like, damn, we got Katie today? Come on, that's legendary. Yeah, I still remember going down the rabbit hole once I first kind of got interested in drill when Sosa was coming out and then finding you and just being like, holy shit, these Chicago kids are fucking crazy. She got a gun in the video. That was a prop. That was a prop. Yeah. For sure. We know there's no handguns floating around Chicago or anything like that. But anyway, welcome to No Jumper. Thank you all for having me. For sure. All right. So we got to go from the very beginning.
1:45So tell us about your upbringing. We got to do the story of Katie Got Bands from the get go. Well, I started rapping in 2011. You know, I caught the beginning of the wave. with my generation with trail music or whatnot. Wait, but how old were you when you started? I was 17 when I created I Need a Hitter, but I was 18 when we released the song. Okay. Wait, but so you're from the Ida B. Wells building? Yes, I'm from 39th Street, Brownsville. And do you have both parents around, or what was the home situation like? My father was incarcerated. Okay. He did 27 years. He home now, but my mother. I was raised by a single mother.
2:31Uh-huh. Okay. And was that a lot? 27 years? Yes. What do you do? Something bad. Murder, robbery, et cetera, et cetera. For sure. Okay, so was there a lot of music in your home as a kid? Yes. I grew up, like, music, my family party. So I come from a family party. My mother and father sat. That sounds fun. Yeah, they party, they dance, they do it. Okay. So there's always kind of a... You can break your toe, my family gonna party. When your toe get fixed, they gonna throw you another party. Like, they find any reason to have a party. Holy shit. What were some artists that you remember hearing a lot of as a kid?
3:12What type of music? Young Jeezy, Gucci Mian. But if you want to go to, like, Chicago, like, Kusha Conflict, Do or Die, Twista, of course. Oh, God. Did you know anybody who was rapping? You know, I just started building relationships with these people, like with me being Katie Gabby. And I can't leave out Nicki Minaj. I grew up listening to her as well. OK, for sure. But so who kind of even gave you the idea to start rapping? Where did that come from? I actually didn't get influenced by artists. I got influenced by Block on the Track. Shout out to Block on the Track. My cousin, my producer. Oh, OK.
3:54So he was already doing his thing musically? See, he used to rap. He DJ, he produced. He's an entertainer as well. And that's him yelling on a lot of your classics. Yes. Block on the track, now you know it's a hit or that. I told you I could get a little crazy. Yeah, for sure. So he already had some artists that he was working with, and then did he just kind of say, hey, I see the potential for you as well? Yeah, because of the lifestyle I was living like. Oh, okay. He used to be telling me, like, because I play too much too, And one day I was like, I was getting in trouble as a juvenile. And one day he called me.
4:32My mama used to always take me to my father's side when I do something. And one day he called me and told me to come sit down and do a song. And that's how I need to hit it. He taught me like the format of a song and what an ad live is. And the rest was history. So that was your first song you ever recorded? I need to hit it. Damn, so that just took off right then and there. Yes, and I recorded it in his closet. like it was so hot it was in the summertime too it was like before my 18th birthday and we had to turn you know when you're recording small settings or any setting you can't have no air yeah like oh we was in there so hot were you uh what did you mean by i'm a lady hitter lady and i'm a female hitter what was a hitter though specifically to you at that time it is the one who hit their target okay literally or metaphorically metaphorically god i haven't hit anyone okay but at that time were you actually dating dudes with dreads because you said i need a dreadhead dude yeah at the time i was but now i'm not dating a dreadhead you're just not a fan of it at all anymore it just worked out that that's not i mean i can't really say that i'm not a fan of it because you don't know who you end up dating in the near future but the type of guys that i liked in the past.
5:53I'm not, I'm out and outgrown that. Right. Because I mean, in that song, you are kind of describing yourself having very bad taste in men basically. Yeah. Thank God for growth, right? Thank God for growth. But at that time, was that kind of your type? Like you were the kind of girl who was basically like, I need a gangster. Yeah, but I do like have to mess with someone who can protect me though. You know what I'm saying? But I don't, I don't like boys that be just out here into stuff because I don't want to get put in none of their stuff either because I didn't get put up in men's stuff from me dealing with them or from me even being cool or being from where I'm from or anything so I'm not on it.
6:35It's also like as you get older it's harder and harder to have dreads. Yes. A lot of men their hairlines is not going to support that as time goes by. They so bald-headed stressed out. Yeah like dreads is very much like a style of the youth. I like them boys up top with them deep waves. Whatever Beyonce said. But I like older men now. Oh yeah? Do you have a boyfriend? No, I'm single. That's bad for my image. What? Having a boyfriend? Yeah, if they not own what you want and not trying to uplift you. Live your truth. We want to see you on VH1 just living your real life. Yeah, but they got to come healed.
7:15Because I'm not going, I'm not taking on no one else trauma. My trauma already enough and I'm healing on my own like so. Really? Come heal or I'm going to drag you by your lace. Wait, so if you're with a guy, is he allowed to cry? Of course. What kind of stuff is cry worthy though? He better not be no little bitch though. But I mean, gentlemen cry. I hear women say that they wanted their man to be open and cry and shit, but it kind of feels like a trap. I feel like you need an extreme level of comfort before you can open up like that. Yeah, because sometimes when they cry, they have mommy issues, daddy issues, or like, it depends on what the cry is, because if it's crying out for help, I cannot heal you.
7:58What if you cried because you spilled something on your$10 ,000 chrome heart jeans? Him or me? Him. That's not going to do it. You're going to cry out with some spilled milk? Clothes can be replaced. They can be clean. But I mean, some people don't like to be dirty either, but if you taking it that far to if someone make an accident in you and you pop off like that, then I'm going to have to bring you back down to life. You're good. I'm glad we got that out of the way. Some relationship advice for all the men out there. I see Remo. He's ready to go. Where y 'all feeling that I need to hit a video at?
8:37At Mandrake Park on 39th and Cottage Grove. So Ida B. Wells, that's over there because that's a low end, right? Then they to the apartments down? Yes, it's Oakwood Shores up now, but the Ida B. Wells, it was from state to the lake, from like, you could say like 36, 37 to 39th. And then that's like a lot of blocks. So you was actually living in the apartments? So where did you move when they tore them down? My mother still live on 39th. She never moved. Oh, so you just stayed in the 39th area? She never, like, even when I blew up with music, I used to be asking my mother, but, like, did she want to move?
9:17She used to say no, and now she want to go. Throughout your childhood, was, you know, Chicago as crazy as it is these days? No. No. I grew up in the best era to be a kid and the worst era to be an adult. Really? Like, we really enjoyed our childhood. We sing some things, but these kids, they youth getting stolen from them because they want to grow up. too fast but it's like children are like sponges they soak up everything that they see they hear and everything like you don't have to pick up a gun I feel like none of that you don't have to pop a pill or none you know so that's what you see from that area these days is that the kids are just in a real rush to get to adulthood yes like slow down I wish I can go back to not having the care in the world and not have to worry about bills or responsibilities or nothing like i mean somebody like you coming out rapping at 18 almost seems like on the older side of things since there's so many like other young drill rappers in chicago now are like 15 16 coming out a lot of times getting killed before they even hit 18 but see my definition and their definition of drill may be different because i talk all the gangsters up in the world nobody died or got harmed because of my lyrics not even myself drilling is a lifestyle for me for them they chasing the image and they can't even enjoy when they blow up because they did or they in jail fighting the life senses you know what i'm saying like they and i i've been trying to like lead the youth how do you feel about like some of the uh people who you might influence to do drills or you know i'm saying it was listening to your music and you said that you never really got in trouble off your music, but someone might have been listening to KD Got Bands when they was coming up.
11:10Does that happen? Go spin a block. KD! That's crazy. Well, I mean, if you want to get technical, I kind of sort of do, but don't, you know, because...
11:27This episode is brought to you by Google Chrome. You think you know a browser, but Gemini and Chrome? That's new. It can help you with practically anything on the web, like restoring a vintage motorcycle from a 50-page restoration block or finally break down that long article you've had open for weeks. Gemini and Chrome is here for it. Ready to make anything online make sense? There's no place like Chrome. Check responses set up required, compatibility and availability varies 18+. I play a part in it, but not necessarily because that's not never the image that I... I always let it be known that I like...
12:03I mean, I don't gangbang. I like guns. I say real, bitch. I don't gangbang. I just like guns. And my little niggas like shooting. They say that shit fun. Like, you know, I'm storytelling in my lyrics. Like, they actually out here trying to prove that they that. I don't have to prove to nobody that I'm nothing but myself. So the lane that they chasing and the lane that I was in is not really compatible. Was it easy for you to avoid the gangbanging shit? Not really because you get put in it. Yeah. Even if you clue with people. You take a photo with somebody. You stand next to somebody in a video.
12:44That's why I don't put people in my videos. I don't post photos with people no more. I'm not shouting nobody out. If someone gets killed, I'm not posting them. And I haven't seen enough dead bodies. Yeah. So, yeah, it's even because, like, growing, like, early on, drilling, error or whatever, we seen you with everybody, you know what I'm saying, from both sides, pitching with Dirk and Doug and everyone. We've been with everybody. So, like, you saying that right there, hanging out with different crews and shit led to you having to pick a side at one point or was it ever? What side I had to pick?
13:17I never picked a side, and I'm still not picking a side. I love both. Like, and what they want to do. Who's going to do something to me? But did you feel pressured to, like, be cool? People call me out on both sides. I feel like you being a young girl, it was probably a little easier. And then it's like, even with you, even being a female, they put you in it. But then when you get in it, they say you're just a female, stay in a female place. But I never got in it. You don't see me. I don't make phone calls. The tongue is powerful. Look at all of the disindead and the trolling. It's not going to stop.
13:53Ain't no killing without killing. There isn't any trolling without trolling. everybody have a day to laugh and cry ain't nothing funny to me about burying someone so i don't i don't know like this is the most crushed out generation ever but you you knew all that even when you were young that you you didn't have the desire to kind of get yourself mixed up in all this no when did you realize like oh this shit serious like people like her crashing out because you said you grew up and you had a good childhood but like what was your first experience like oh Yeah, this shit right here is too much. It really, really started getting way worse than once.
14:29All of the ones who I came up with started dying and going to jail, facing life sentences. And they all talented. I had their whole life ahead of them. And nobody is like the blind leading the blind. There isn't any big homies. There isn't any structure. The end of ones. I grew up off love, unity, all of that. Like they be saying controversy sale. Unity do too. Like we don't have to be friends. We can go rock a show. When you go your way, I'm going my way. Because guess what? My bar is just co-ed and I'm not sparing nobody. If you want to do it, I'm an entertainer. You want to entertain? We going to entertain.
15:08Me or Lord feed me. I'm going to put you in the blender. But don't get it twisted for one second thinking that I'm about to let you cost me my life or my freedom over a song. Because they going to move on to the next person after you gone. and find somebody else to this is like for what are you right you ain't saying no wrong so like you was there any like a specific moment where you was like all right yeah this shit because you just said that uh after losing all these people around you what rappers around you that you lost are you seeing you was like oh yeah like because you've been you was around everybody from early stages all of their deaths affected me somehow some way like it gets so deep that our grandparents from both sides like great great grandparents and parents like it's a lot of bonds and stuff that's getting tarnished and broken apart because people scared to get their kids they keep seeing drill music killed the culture how my music didn't kill nobody i influence look at what i'm doing look at the females i have a legacy like if i stop rapping today my legacy will live on if i die today i know i'm going upstairs with that man and i know my legacy will live on like because i'm not just no queen of drill.
16:17I'm the queen of everything that I do. I have influence. A lot of people don't have influence. A lot of people don't have their own identity either. And they be the entourages. They don't even be the artists and the artists have a personal beef. I know I'm just hearing you say I'm like damn because like a lot of this not because I see all the people that you was around. I'm like damn a lot of people were gone like everybody from like Crump to Yeah, her leg heel Even duck Because I remember seeing you with L.A. Capone, I grew up with him too Actually, I'm glad you said that There was like an old tweet where L.A.
16:53Capone was He kind of tweeted out He was like, I used to be in the studio with Katie or whatever I was at his house I used to be at his house because I hang with his sister's deal right now And he was rapping like free Been raw like since we was growing up And I used to be over there And he was rapping and putting freestyles on MySpace and tag back then. And I used to be like, write me a rap. And he was trying to like help you get your flow and all that stuff. No, he used to think I was playing. That's why when I actually did it and then the song did what it did, he was like, damn, I remember you.
17:26He was like, I'm proud. Or whatever. Is that all? All right. So there's a viral picture of you holding like that little PP shooter gun. It was, I don't know, it was like a little crazy gun. All right. What music video was that from? Is that the I Need a Hitter? No. Let's go in. Shady. Shady going D. He ain't shot that. That picture became like a meme. Everybody used to be sharing that picture. Still right now. Even until it come up. Break down that day because you and Shady don't see eye to eye anymore either. You and Shady. Me, I don't see eye to eye. I seen you on a I think it was maybe J-Main interview.
18:06You kind of was like taking shots at her. I ain't beefing with her. What was your problem anyway? She just a hating ass bitch I still love her Like you know what I'm saying Yeah And then it's like I called you my little sister You gonna go fuck with my ups but who wouldn't I mean I'm me like And then you going to fuck with my ups Didn't even put you where you need to be Cause y 'all had a real relationship before the music Or was it just music I was the reason why that video was the way it was we had a real live sisterhood relationship but I ain't gonna get into that it is what it is I wish her the best it ain't nothing like cause if we see each other right now she ain't gonna run up on me she know better like and I ain't gonna run up on her but I ain't ducking it either though like yeah cause nah at one point cause y 'all two were the first people who really kicked off the drill scene and shit she ain't came with nothing but that that 22nd rap that shit hard though still right now to send the party up but what ops was she hanging out with that you were upset about
19:18we gotta do our own homework we gotta do our own work got it but okay at that time was that where did you get that prop gun for that music video it was on the floor oh you just found it somewhere it was on the floor was that the only time that you ever pulled a book out in the video I don't know no I don't know because I mean I feel like you even at a young age had a pretty good head on your shoulders like you you knew what moves to making stuff so it seems like that might have been something that you kind of might have realized soon after like all right maybe that's not the image I want to put out there oh I actually had to start cleaning up my image like these the last past years I was seeing when I started paying attention to the younger generation and I'm steady seeing that I was getting compared to what they were doing and I'm like oh no that's not what I was on you had caught a gun case like right after that video shoot right yeah they tried to use it they tried to use it so how long did you actually have to spend in jail I burned it right out when I caught the case like the next day at court at the bond court and as I was fighting the case I had to check in with pretrial services and I didn't and then I called another case and then they sat me down for 32 days and then they reinstated my bond and I got out and that's when I Need a Hitter was out they dropped the video while I was incarcerated and when I was in jail like we had two visiting days and every visiting day I was gone from having visits and the guards were like, who is this girl?
21:04But I fought the case for 60 years and I beat it. I took it to Ben Stroud. Shout out to Dan Franks. It was just a gun case and it took you 60 years to beat it? Wow. I was getting frustrated. I wanted to cop out like it was stopping me because I couldn't travel. Then I became a public figure. So if I was to travel, they will find out. It was just a lot like... So good, so good, so good. 22:28Be young as long as you can. To the men, too, don't get caught up in nothing they got going on because they're going to keep partying and keep living their life. Like, nothing ever happened. They ain't going to check on your kids, your mama, nothing. You're just going to have a birthday and a death day. They don't give you your flowers or no parties while you're here, but they give you all the parties while you're gone. So is carrying a gun pretty common for women in Chicago at this point? Carrying the guns coming for anybody around the world. But in Chicago, it's kids. Ten years old, switches on the internet.
23:01I'm like, they hold life ahead of them. Yeah, it's wild. But that's why people with influence have to start speaking up and breaking the cycle. But do you feel like as a woman, is it difficult to stay out of that kind of trouble? Not for me. I'm in my business. Okay. that's why I'm still here yeah how did you get that mentality like look I ain't gonna do all the diss songs and shit cause you hanging around everybody who dissing and shit what made you stay away from that I never dissed anybody unless they came directly at me like with the with entertainment cause if you're not a friend of me you what an enemy right so I've been seeing the ops all that and it's never had nothing to do with the neighborhood you were the original Ice Spice Who?
23:52Well, like 10 years after you came out in Chicago, we got Ice Spice in New York who kind of had the same mentality. I'm going to like kind of use the drill sound, but I'm not going to be on some crazy beefing shit or anything. No, there isn't any beefing, but what do you mean the original? I have my own sound. I can't be duplicating. I'm not saying. No, obviously you guys sonically totally different things. No disrespect to Ice Spice. I don't know her personally. I'm just kind of saying it's sort of similar though. Like New York got a similarly non-violent female star. It's kind of similar pattern.
24:25I mean, she at Cardi drilling? Nah, she's a gang member. She drilling. She ain't no gang member. She's a mother. She's pissing off gang members out here. Nicki make hot music. Who else in New York rapping? Rapping. How do you feel about female rap just in general? I love it. The females popping it. These men because the men washed up because even if they're not dead or in jail they're on their way or they out here strung out the females doing it I don't like to see them going into the personal stuff with mentioning kids and other personal shit but they popping it it's like if this entertainment entertain leave personal personal they go for both like male and female but I'm proud of the women because they used to growing up when I first was rapping they were seeing in the male dominant, this, this, and that.
25:21And there's nothing that a man can do that I can't do. I'll pick up a con flippy too. I mean, when you were coming out, it was a lot less common to be a female rapper. Like it was still kind of like the age of Nikki and then like almost no other popular rappers. It's time for other women to win. Like, you know what I'm saying? She's still a queen. She's still winning too. But it's time for other women to win too. Yeah. I mean, fast forward 15, 14 years. If you come down to me, I'm going to pass the torch. what you think I'm going to do. I would love to have one, somebody right here on the side shining with me, seeing they my mini me or I influence them or however, you know.
25:58Is that something you've actually put effort into, trying to find a girl to sign? Shit, these lookers, it's hard to talk to them. Why you say that? It's just, baby. Yeah. They different. Have you tapped in with any of the new chicks that's rapping and stuff right now from Chicago? I mean, I support them and I always show love. They be hitting me up and I hit them up, but we never really like, I even take people with me to shows. Everything I talk to them, give them advice, all of that. But Chicago, Chicago different. They don't even care who you is. They be like, who is you, bitch? I'm a little comedian, even beefing.
26:36Hairstylist, everything. It's just when you make it there, it's time to go. once you got your city cause I got my city it's time for me to go every time I was leaving I kept coming back this time I had detachment issues so you when you did get your alright so let's take it back some more so I Need A Hit It came out and then after that what was the next song? Riding Around Drilling Riding Around Drilling and then the record deal come through or? yes I got signed out two songs Who you signed to at the time? I had signed with Lawless Inc. And then I ended up getting a distribution deal. I'll pop out with E1 Music.
27:25But it didn't turn out in my favor. And Pop Out had Louis on there, right? How did that Louis feature come about? I was in the studio one day. My mama made me mad. I went to the studio one day. My mama made me mad. I was in there working on Pop Out. Me and Block. and before we got to think about the second verse, because me and Louis were signed to the same label at the time. So a lot of our sessions, we ran into each other. It was like his session was either first and mine was second, and vice versa, but he came in. And Block was like, go ask Louis, jump on the song. And we played it. He went right in the booth.
28:02He freestyled four bars. He freestyled his whole verse. And that's how that came about. And when did the Queen of Drill title start? It started way at the beginning. Like with, I was in the Red Eye newspaper. And I remember, shout out to Kyle Red Eye. And they named me Drillery Clinton. First lady of drill when I did my interview. And then I came with Beds and Hitters. That was my very first mixtape. And then I came with Drillery Clinton after. And the rest was history. Did you vote for Hillary Clinton? I can't tell you who I voted for. that's confidential damn I wish he could have got an office but you don't do you consider yourself a democrat or a republican neither I don't get into political stuff that's probably smart if you want to get technical I'm a democrat and a republican how so I mean I'm going to come up from welfare and now I'm a brand As you get older you get a little conservative As you get older you got a little conservative She wants the tax cuts That a rich person wants But then she also comes from I want my link card too They cut it What you used to have a free Like free bus access or what The subway out there My EBT card They gave me$20 Backpack they took my link and then I was so hurt they want you to work to receive government benefits then when you work you can't receive government benefits oh yeah I heard they're about to take a ton of people off of EBT and shit too but you know what a lot of these lazy bitches need to get off they asses too like so I feel sorry for the ones who really need the government assistance for the kids that part you know because it's going to get worse.
30:07So they turn out drilling when people can't feed their kids or they self, what you think is going to happen? Yeah, exactly. Hungry niggas going to be trying to figure out how to eat, right? Definitely. How do you feel? Are you hip to Aspen? Cartier, the little chick that's coming out of Chicago right now? I don't know. Yeah. I actually want to have a sit down with all of the women in Chicago who are rapping like a panel. What would you have to say to them? Like someone, what would you say to her? She's a wild child. They talented. Like you're very talented with your whole life. You don't have to force yourself to be out here in this shit.
30:46You don't even have to force yourself to even do substances. Because I seen one of her interviews after she was out here with you all. I saw her seeing how she left Percocet alone. I used to do them too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You can't pay me. I don't even trust doctors. Yeah. But I would just tell her, like, focus on being great. When you're gifted and talented, you're going to have a target. The enemy going to always come after you. Don't let the devil win. I'm not dancing with the devil. I'm dancing on his head. So you think Aspen Cartier might be on the verge of being taken in by the devil? I mean, when you're dealing with substances and all that other shit, I consider that the enemy.
31:30So that's the devil to me. How did you battle with you using substances and stuff? You said you was using perks. I have anxiety real bad. Like nobody knew I was off nothing unless I told them, like I ain't out and I had to switch my mouth to. I really did it. And it was for a cry out for help as well, you know. And one day I just, I started losing people to fentanyl. You know, and it scared me. And I just stopped cold-blooded. and having withdrawals and stuff, that stuff is serious too. It's a real challenge, but. At that time, how many perks do you think you were taking? I don't know. Once it got the wind down, I'm doing another.
Read the full transcript
32:15Yeah. So I don't know. I spent a lot of money too. How much money do you think you spent? I don't know. Wait, but so if you stopped when people started dying from Fennel and stuff, What was that like 2017 ish? That's when I remember that kind of becoming a thing Then I've been around Since forever I guess you're right I haven't popped a percassade When was my DJ Smiles interview? You was on a perc during an interview or something? No I stopped I talked about my Addiction Let me see I did the DJ Smiles interview That was I stopped I was right about 10 years ago does it say 9 years ago when I did the interview with him in Atlanta or so you didn't have to like go to rehab or anything you just kind of just wound yourself over and went cold turkey no I just no I just stopped but having them withdraw oh that's for real that's pretty funny oh sorry but like the DJ Small Eyes interview like the camera settings are all f***ed up so it's like You're fading into the background.
33:28No, that's my very first one. Wait, is that? No, that's not the one that I did in Atlanta. Oh, that says nine years ago. That's when he was in Chicago. So wait a minute. I did another interview. It says nine years ago and then three years ago. Right. Well, nine years ago was when I stopped. And three years ago was when I spoke about it. Got it. When I was in Atlanta, then, yes. Okay, so let's go back to this time period where you're kind of blown up. You get signed and everything. What was the label doing for you at that time? Did it feel like they were actually invested in trying to turn you into a superstar?
34:03Well, you know what I'm saying? I blew up without even wanting to be famous at the time. And then it was like, at the moment, I did need help. So, my all help isn't good help. But I'm happy that I did go through what I went through with the label. Because I had a 360 deal. If I touched 50 cent, they got a quarter. Like, he owned my masters and everything. I went to federal court to get out of my contract, and I won. But at the time, I'm not going to hold you. The label did what needed to be done, but it could have been done better. And even at the time, I had tried to go in there to renegotiate my contract.
34:53and he was talking to me like I was a peasant. So you had a lot of people taking advantage of you during that time because you being new. And then I didn't understand the business. Like when I signed my contract, his lawyer was present for the both of us. You know, that's the conflict of interest. And I wasn't aware of that. And then my mother and my family didn't know that I signed the deal. They found out when I was doing an interview on WGCI. Why didn't you tell your parents that you were about to sign? And how, the deal got presented to you where you didn't have any family members around you to walk you through anything?
35:29No, and then when I signed again with the other deal, no, my mother called me while I was live on the radio, but I didn't answer. And when I got off, when I called her back, she told me to bring that paper home. I never gave my mother the paper Until I started going through What I was going through When stuff got real But even when I was asking For my copy of my contract Because I had left it In his vehicle at the time And um Yeah He had turned my phone off It was like around the time I had to do a feature In the video And stuff He had turned my phone off And I went and got my phone right on Shout out to Steve At Exclusive 773 Yeah I went and got me another SIM card, and I just started telling people for bookings or whatever, hit me up.
36:21I got on the internet and was trolling, saying, f*** the label. I'm crashing that bitch or whatever, whatever. I was hurt. When you say he, who's he? The old manager. I ain't going to say his name because I don't want no legal nothing or nothing. I'm rebranding. In retrospect, though, do you think that you were being kind of irrational? because I feel like a new artist in the game, yes, a lot of times you sign a bad deal, but that's kind of the trade that you're making with the label is that they're going to invest in blowing you up, and you're just going to be like, okay, I'm going to give you a huge percentage of the money, but you're going to blow me up.
36:57Do you wish that you had just kind of played ball and just tried to? I tried. I even tried to go back to renegotiated. Even when my distribution deal with E1, I had found out I didn't know what my advance was. my advance was a hundred thousand dollars i got two five thousand dollar checks from him oh so you had a manager that was in the middle of all this that was i never was even at the office with the people like who wanted to sign me none of that when they flew to chicago i met shout out to my research you on music like i met him and you know he was coaching me even with how to do interviews like i still have a relationship with him and his daughter and all that or whatnot but I didn't know.
37:40And then when they was asking to see the books at court, he couldn't produce what you spend the money on. He said, full liquor flights, and I was smaller than this. And I didn't have that many videos out. I had a couple videos out or whatnot, but. At the time, you felt like he was the right person to be the manager, but what made you choose him to be your manager? I don't know. For one, I was excited because I was a King Louis fan. And then I'm like, you know what I'm saying? I always wanted to work with him when I dropped my very first track. So him managing King Louis made you like, alright, I could probably trust him.
38:25But once I had got in and got to seeing what it is in the middle and all of that, I ain't gonna hold you though. Out of all of the managers that I ever worked with, he have done the best work. Everybody else was just riding my coattail and coming in wanting to be the artist. Really? This episode is brought to you by Redfin. You're listening to a podcast, which means you're probably multitasking, maybe even scrolling home listings on Redfin, saving homes without expecting to get them. But Redfin isn't just built for endless browsing. It's built to help you find and own a home with agents who close twice as many deals When you find the one, you've got a real shot at getting it.
39:08Get started at Redfin.com. Own the dream. Is she still managing King Louis? The label act up and I'm crashing that bitch. There ain't no cap in my rap. When I see that in the inauguration, there continues. Artists is dissing me. I was talking about when I filed bankrupt. Filed bankrupt. I had to file bankrupt to get out of my contract. like Trump filed bankruptcy. What year was that? I've been out of my contract for nine years now, 10 years now. So 2016 or something? All right, so when you got out of your contract initially, why didn't you, or did you try to like, all right, let me heat back up and try to get another record deal?
39:52I dropped DC too in the process of, I was already working on DC too. But he was trying to get me to hurry up to produce another album so he could get more funding when I never even got none of the funding so I was not going and I tried to renegotiate to try to work it out and they were telling me I didn't have any resources I don't know any knowledge and that's what they thought until it was until the rabbi got the gun and that's how they went like so how was filing in bankruptcy overall did it up a lot of shit in your life no because it was like wiping the baby ass but i had my credit was 750 at the time and i was crying like i was staying downtown chicago like oh my credit was 750 i was doing so good and i didn't want to do it but i had to really because it would have been me having to pay them when they owe me right damn so would you say that that the label situation was like the sole reason why you kind of stopped dropping music and sort of did you fall out of love with making music as a result of all this business shit I felt like I was just yeah it kind of like hit me at a standstill and it was like just imagine having a hundred people with you and you by yourself and then when reality hits you in the midst of me doing that I had lost my crib at the time.
41:26Like everything here started going downhill. And everybody used to be at my house. And I'm downtown. I'm in the house blasting the music, kickbacks. But I was young. I wasn't even 21 living downtown. You know, in Chicago, it was just like it was an eye opener. Like even especially right now, because I still here went through similar things prior to now. it took me damn near 15 years to realize what it is with the industry with the people cause people come and be on the stage but they ain't putting in the work and help them build the stage all those people that are around you in that era they all just seem like cloud chasers at this point I just went through this last week at my release party as well really everybody wanted to be around when the camera's on don't even know I don't even care for cameras in my face like that's something I'm coaching myself and learning because I haven't had that many cameras in my face at one time like I was telling you while I have anxiety but it's like people love when they can be in the center of attention I don't like attention it costs to pay attention I'm a popular loner like I used to be around 100 people.
42:48I used to feel like I had to take 100 people with me. I came out here by myself. Yeah, you just said you had 100 people with you, but you felt alone. So nobody was keeping it real, like none of your day ones. How you going to my show when you're ready before me? But when the shoe on the other foot, I'm making sure I'm playing the back. and it's just like it's a lot of envy and hate and my spirit will not align or align with it i feel that it's definitely like before you become famous like your your relationships are based on you know reality these are people that you're around you work with them you go to school with them they're people you know since you're a kid and then all of a sudden you get all of a sudden you become someone where standing next to you has some intrinsic value to them and then all of a sudden it becomes super hard for you to trust everybody and yes it's it's a very strange thing to go through that i feel like most people will never have to go through and won't really understand but for sure over the years there's been times where i like looked around the room of people i'm talking back in the the day when i had the store on melrose and just realized like like I don't really like know any of these people around me they're just here because they're trying to be around me and I'm just letting them and it's like why the fuck am I allowing this type of shit I never really had it go bad that much but like it definitely is kind of just stupid to be like bringing all these people around that don't really give a fuck about you and people I was allowing people to tarnish my brain but people only do what you allow so if I'm allowing you to do it.
44:33How would you respect it? What do you think some things that were done to tarnish your brands by other people? Like something that you're like, yeah. Fighting at my shows. That was messing up the bag for you to tour? Yes, but like, don't get me wrong. If somebody act up and they try to charge at me or one of my people, they're supposed to defend themselves. But you don't supposed to be down there in the crowd anyway. You're supposed to have been up here on the stage with me. I had just gave one of the girls the microphone And said Be the hype girl you know all the songs You gonna get paid They wanna go in the crowd and twerk And you look up they fight Nah it fall on me Then You go on the shows They telling you you only can bring Five people Ten people possibly in When they telling everybody else they gotta pay Everybody ain't trying to pay Nobody trying to fork I paid my back ends to get people in my shows and went home with nothing.
45:34Yeah. They drink up to liquor. I get everybody drunk and out on the regular. You know what I'm saying? No. That's why this run personal. It's between me and God. Do you feel like you're at the start of a whole new run right now? I am. Nice. It's everything from scratch. I just stepped out on faith. I dropped a project with no budget, no team, no promo. Sorry for the Kate. Sorry for the Kate. Yeah, I dropped it last Thursday, 10, 23, 25. Yes, I dropped. I stepped out on faith. And because of all of these years when I tried to allow people to step in and help me, they want to compare me to other artists.
46:20They want to say, you need to do a song like this person. Like everybody who you compare me to, I influenced. so I had to tune all the noise out what made you finally get back into like alright I'm ready to drop who was in your corner like telling you me and God I was isolated like still isolated right now like I fast I got baptized again at sunrise service even the kids was out there going crazy and saying I'm getting baptized with Katie Gabbies or whatever like when you keep God first everything else is gonna follow suit anyway but like I've been detoxing I've been in the gym I've been spending time by myself I never spent this much time by myself but it's so peaceful and I've been relearning myself old habits old behavior breaking generational curses and staring up the pot is the album I haven't actually got a chance to listen to it I didn't realize it was out yet but is it intentional that you use Wayne like for the name and the cover and stuff that's like inspired by Wayne.
47:25Because when we think about Wayne, we think about somebody who's just like singularly focused on music, who's basically just recording all the time and he's just all about the bars. I sure thought you all listened to the album. I wish I knew it was out. I didn't realize. How you didn't know? I told your team, don't worry about it. You listen to the album, I need my feedback. Laura. Laura. It actually did come from Sorry for the Wait because I was actually dropping freestyles. But something came over me and was like, no, you can drop freestyle videos for promo in between for content, drop a project.
48:04And I put 13 songs on them. And with no feature. Yeah. No feature. Where were you recording your music at for the most part? Some of the songs I recorded years ago. Some of the stuff I did this year, but I worked in the music garage. I don't want to yell out nothing because I don't want I don't want to leave nobody out what's your recording process like now you said back in the day you might have been taking the perks and shit getting ready in the studio you off perks and shit now you ain't doing that I like to work I like to work sober no smoking no drinking you just in the street I might just smoke lately I've been having a clear heat like and I smoke cones now it's more organic but I have asthma too so all that other stuff but I like to have a clarion I don't like all like if you can't come to the studio and give me some ideas some feedback or something I don't want you in there so I'd be in the studio by myself with like a producer or engineer or if a writer be with me or most of the time I'm by myself so like but working in the studio I get into character because I used to rush I used to be trying to go to a party and not treating it like it's work but now I treat it like it's work I don't care if I have to do 100 takes.
49:22I used to be thinking that you're not a good artist if you don't get it right the first time. And I used to be slurring being drunk. Because I've been going back studying. Even with watching old interviews, listening to old music. And the rest is history. It seems like you're on your shit. I'm hearing a lot of accountability coming from you. It seems like this go around. You're taking it real serious. You more hungry than you were now or back then? I'm so hungry right now I eat a giraffe do you wish that you like had like what do you think your career would have been like if you had all the knowledge that you have now back then when you first started to get momentum
50:07my career probably would be bigger but I'm big but I'm glad that I went through what I went through because now when it come down to the business nobody can play with me and I wish I had my own entertainment attorney I wish I would have been more up front with my mother and you know since we were making decisions and I felt like because I was 18 I didn't have to tell her nothing but when it got real who hid your back yeah mama definitely okay a couple of like different moments I wanted to ask about like how did you end up doing a song with gunplay back in the day I love gunplay that was mind-blowing to me at the time because you're like a kid rapper out there.
50:49You were so young, and then all of a sudden you're in a video with Gunplay who was like the craziest gangster to me at the time. My team actually reached out to his team, and that's how that took place. And then we did the song. I mean, he jumped on the song, however, and then when he came to Chicago, we shot the video, and he had a performance later that day, and I ended up popping out with him. And then we started building the bond when I'm going to other states. We run into each other. I'm kicking it with them like that. Facts. What about more recently? I've seen Sexy Red brought you out during a show, right?
51:29Yeah. What show was that? And how did you even get in touch with her about that? That was her first time actually performing in Chicago. Oh, okay. It's crazy. That was Halloween, too. Right. That was Halloween. what two years ago she just dm'd you or how'd you hear from her she had been saying my name and doing my day when i had found out she was coming i kept saying like i need to be on point because i'll never be ready when people call where used to now i do because my mama used to be like that's why i tell you stay ready so you don't have to get ready but this particular day I had told one of my people That school One of her people Tell her fuck with me When she gets to the city I'm like shit I ain't even gotta perform That's what I'm telling them I ain't even gotta perform I just come in the building That's how I treat All of them I mean I don't have to Hit the stage Type shit But I'll rock out And extend my hand If you You know what I'm saying But they ended up calling Like two or three hours Before the show Oh shit And luckily my hair was done and I know how to do my own makeup and I was like I kept seeing it though two days before it came and then when the phone call came I'm like damn I be calling stuff out but she was real cool if you had just been like looking the worst you ever looked in your whole life your hair was all fucked up like would you have still found a way to pull up put a hoodie on or something I would do a wig on with the head I did that when they called me to come to the millennial tour at the WinTrust Arena when I performed Boosie.
53:11I wasn't ready that day. I threw a wig on, my auntie curled the ends of it, put my eyelashes on, I did my makeup and I put on a white socks hat. So even that performance for the millennial tour was like a couple hours notice? It wasn't even a couple. He called me and told me I hit one out. Oh shit. And luckily I was at my mother's house and she don't stay that far. from where the arena is like my mother on 39th and the arena on 22nd so it was like 10 minutes from my house i mean that must have felt good both of those examples but like just to have somebody like sexy red who's like basically the the biggest female rapper at the time and she's actually recognizing and respecting your contribution and wants to bring you out in your own city like is that kind of almost like an emotional moment to realize that all these people with you like that i really never really even be processing it until like right now because i never really got to embrace me even being who i am because i was too busy worrying about everyone else and them in my life but it feel good though like especially because i influence her too yeah i mean even me as somebody who didn't know you until an hour ago when I saw that she did that it instantly made me so happy for you and also made me fuck with her so much that she respected you like that like that just let me know and especially you know she's got her Chicago history we all seen her in videos with a bunch of dudes back in the day and stuff just being around and being a fan of people so yeah I don't know I thought that was just like an amazing moment I was really happy that she understood why that was a good idea yeah I was sexy She a cool person And she a dope ass mother She had them kids with her Well she was pregnant at the time But her son was with her Ain't no excuses when you gotta get to it Sexy a real one She is Alright since we're talking about features Let's talk about the Nicki feature So how did that come about How did you I congratulated her Like I congratulate everyone And she had both This episode is brought to you by State Farm.

Download the State Farm app or go online at statefarm.com. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. Broke a Lauren. I mean, she beat a record. A Lauren Rehear record or something like that. a 1999 record and I just said congratulations and we was already like building a when you said that you just said it like a tweet or you made like a video or no I just said congratulations on the post but prior earlier to that year you know I had dropped DC4 and when all the stuff was going on and I kicked that down here when I got on Asian Dallas and the barbs was in the comments.
56:20And I'm like, no, no, no. I'm not coming at her. I'm like, I woke up and she was in my DM and shit. She followed me and we was talking. And down the line, that here happened and later on that day, she had sent the beat. Same day. In my DM. And I went on YouTube like, damn, this beat ain't out. This is serious. This is gonna happen right now for real. And I went and watched her story and she was telling Like she say all of the women who just congratulate her, she have something for you. Check your DM. But I didn't even see that. And so after she DM me the beep and then she like, Hey mama, I know it might be a little poppy, but send eight bars back ASAP.
57:02What? I went right to the studio. Oh yeah. So break that day down. Like, all right. So that must've been a crazy feeling. Nikki telling you, Hey, go rap now. I did two verses, right? Cause you know, the song super freaky girl yeah one of the verses i was like rapping like all the way all the way nasty then the other verse when i said pull up with that sticky pulling i mean pulling out my product and i'm like it's already finna be too many people trying to sound like her i have my own sound my own everything and i came with that and i had a few people come to the studio just to hear my verse. I never said what it was for or nothing.
57:45And they was like something like that. But I already heard in my head that I was something like that. I sent it right back to her. She was like, oh, bitch, you snap. You know, she asked me to send the session files, and that's how that went. And then she said, don't say nothing. So how long did you have to keep that secret that you, all right, I got this new Niki? Like a couple weeks. So it dropped a couple weeks right after? So in your mind You gearing up Knowing everybody About to try to Spin back around You finna be on A Nicki Minaj album And in the midst I was working Like I am right now Like I had my project out I was doing independent And everybody was Calling for me Yeah Yeah So stars were aligning Again Yes So uh More so Alright so You send it back to her And then you said Come out a few weeks later She had posted a snippet And it was like New York Boston Chicago Yeah Seeing everybody up Place it said Florida Everybody It said everybody hometown And I had comment And she told me like No no no don't let them know I erased my comment I never knew who was on the song Nothing till it dropped So who else was on the song?
59:07Bia, JT, Akbar, Malibu Mitch. You have any relationships with any of the other girls on there or not? Not really? I tried. It was just like I tried with the people in the city. I haven't talked to them since we left Boston probably. What was it like though in terms of the reaction from people? Just like being on a song with Nicki has got to feel like, you know, That's like the guy version again of a song with Jay-Z, basically. It felt good. It felt good. Yeah. Yeah, I'm honored and pleasure for that to take place like that. It opened up a lot of doors for me as well. Do you feel like, you know, they were trying to say Nikki don't want to, like, pass the torch to the next artist.
59:49Do you feel like she has to do that? How do you feel about people wanting Nikki to do more for female rappers? I mean, she gave you a feature, but she might not be as, like, all right, Kate's texting you. How do you feel about, or matter of fact, what's your relationship with Nikki now? She's not entitled to have to work with anyone. That's my co-worker. Like, we don't, I love and respect her. She love and respect me, but she's not my peer. Like, we don't have no personal relationship, but I f*** with her. Yeah, it's all over here. I mean, that's the way she was told, though. She was told to step on anybody who, whatever, but I feel like she do need to pipe down a little and let people shine too.
1:00:33But I don't know where she coming from. I don't know what she got going on behind the scenes with other people or stuff like that. So I can't really base my opinion on that. But based off on what I see Lie, Nikki, you had it for a minute now and time. And you still got it. You who you is. I feel like the barbs are going to hear you saying that Nikki needs to pipe down and they're going to run with that. What they gonna do to me? I just feel like they're gonna spin a narrative that's gonna be They already spin a narrative. They was coming at me when I congratulated Cardi but I mean I fuck with both of them I hope one day that they can make some money together.
1:01:12Y 'all don't have to be friends. Feels like friends might be out of the question at this point We co-workers. That's the whole point. Everybody be taking stuff personal this business. But as co-workers usually most jobs I've had I probably wouldn't tell my co-worker that their kid was retarded and they kind of crossed that line both of them I mean at the end of the day I don't have any kids and I don't play about kids so both of them was bogus yeah that was but at the same time how many times do people think they can keep f***ing with people like I don't know what they got going on yeah and everybody reacting off emotion like and that's what I'm learning to control my emotions honestly it was just kind of weird to see two women that successful and that at the top of their game and stooping that low regardless of who started it it's just like damn that's some some low shit like both of them have to realize that they who they is just like i had to realize that i'm who i am you know what i'm saying like even if you don't want to with nobody or tune in today she just let them have a moment right because i mean most of like the big rappers don't really diss each other in the way that we're used to seeing like, you know, the drill rappers.
1:02:21Both of their fans was coming at me calling me lap dogs and shit. I'm like, what? I ain't never said on no bitch lap. You don't gotta do too much to piss off the Nicki fans. You don't have to do shit to piss off do too much to piss off nobody fans. Both of their fans was coming at me. But once I understood the assignment I set it up. I'm not going back and forth arguing with y 'all. Yeah, I mean, congratulating Cardi on her album, it's like, you didn't sign up to be a part of anybody's beef, right? my album is fire your album for Nicki album fire too like what the f*** what am I finna see you arguing about when neither one of them even paying attention to my album who shouted out my album who tuned in to my album so what the f*** what they got going on ain't gonna affect me in no way nah I feel that facts facts so let's talk about the game you got on the table let's bring her here a little bit what is this Katie Land Katie Land I'm going to give some examples here.
1:03:21We have everybody take a shot. Take a shot if you ever had link, which is the EBT card in Chicago. The law, mad, I won't snitch. I'm not no sellout. That's the jail one. Okay. Bounce and break your back or take a shot. This is a twerking incentive. Prank call. If you low end crazy, take a shot. Take a shot if you ever had a threesome. Would you be taking a shot on that one? Maybe. Whoa. All right. I need to talk about that. Kiss the person to your left. I think you're more on my left than him, which is a good thing. Trap house. What happens if you land on the trap house? You haven't been in the trap house.
1:04:03You've trapped before. You haven't been in the trap house. You take a shot. Okay. Five squats or drink Lil Booty. I do five squats or a drink. Okay. Have you ever f***ed an op? Start over. F*** the op, start over. Crazy. You see my bow bow dance? Do the bow bow dance. You need the PPP loan. Take a shot. SBA. If you did a PPP loan, take a shot. Freestyle. Take a shot if you paid for a plan B and the bitch ain't take the pill.
1:04:37She's preaching. I got cards too. Okay. What inspired this? Yeah. My cousin, she was telling me like, you have influence because I be playing games or doing this. and she was like, you a brand. She kept asking me for years. He used to come out with a game. And I actually came up with this last year and I was holding it to my chest, but I was letting people play it, but released it for my album. Nice. Did you see J-Main with the cereal and you were like, you know what? I could do a board game. I actually came up with this last year. When did cereal come out? I want a cereal too. Yeah, we got the Dirkio and the whoops right over there.
1:05:17I'm gonna walk in bring in we got a Crip Mac 40 too don't drink that I don't drink beer yeah I don't even care for champagne I like beer um okay but are you thinking about actually producing this uh this game oh and so we have oh wow and so we have all these like pieces here as well yeah Altoids Fun Dip I have 50 games Corona and I pre-sold 10 but people It's like 2 ,000, 3 ,000 people in a game. But I just said that my website actually just got finished right before I came in here. So I haven't had a chance to even check out my website yet. I mean, how much is it? 50. 50 bucks. I think I need to up the score.
1:06:06I mean, if you got 3 ,000 people that want to buy it. I should sell it for 100, right? I mean, yeah, you're going to be rich as shit. 300K? Independently, right? What are we talking about? 300K? Independently. That's a stupid bag. You really stop thinking about music. Just go all in on board games. So if people wanted to purchase this board game right here, what website do they need to go to to get this right here? The website will be, I just, I got to look at my website and confirm me, but my website will be. It'll be on your website. It'll be in my bio. Go to Katie's Instagram. My new Instagram, Katie, got me in certain.
1:06:38I need my page back. Can y 'all help me get my page back? Why'd you lose it? What'd you post? I didn't post anything. It just disappeared one day? I don't post nothing but shaking ears or talking shit, having fun. I don't post nobody getting killed. Why do you think it's them? Because they know all kinds of internet hijinks, I assume. Why would you think it was them when I'm doing business with them? I'm just saying, some of the Barb's go rogue. They go against missions that Nikki has certified. Why do you have to keep mentioning the Barb's? I have my own fan base. I live in fear of them. What do we call your fans?
1:07:14is there a nickname for the fans not Barb's I'm trying to see do I want to call them the KGB's or being a KGB's with a Z KGB with a Z like the KGB's or I might call them the drillettes and the drillers I like the drillettes and the drillers what about the banditos that's decent but I like the drillettes I like drillettes got it speaking of drillettes and shit what happened with you in Asian dog this all stemmed from her saying she's the queen of Drew I didn't care about that we all kings and queens it was the disrespect I was ignoring and she was doing the most trying to get a reaction out of me and I wasn't what did she say that caught your eye for you to pay attention she's trying she's doing too much five new names she took it and the bitch never took nothing from me but notes she said five new names she took it then she said fuck my dear people she was just going too far.
1:08:10I don't talk about dead people. People, dead people, I still didn't say dead people even behind it. I threw the bitch a front-of-roo without even having a front-of-roo. You know? And once I saw, I understood my power. Because I don't even be speaking on that bitch no more either. I wish her the best. congratulations on your bundle of joy too but yeah she was being very disrespectful and I don't tolerate disrespect where I come from I die about that and clown shit I don't entertain do you feel like you can even be the queen of drill if you're not from Chicago you can be the queen wherever you at I'm not arguing and fighting over that and when you come at me it's personal it's a lot of queens out here drilling but when you come for the queen you better have some sense.
1:09:39My bars are co-ed. I ain't just going at it with these bitches. I'm going to go after me too. So y 'all never got to talk and chop it up any? We actually used to be DMing each other like I f***ed with her music. She f***ed with mine. She was shouting me out when she started rapping type shit, you know? And then, you know, like I just told you before we even started, these bitches don't be ops for real. They be haters. That's what be and I don't hate on nobody. I spread love, spread wealth and unity, but I ain't ducking no smoke. So what did what was the start of the actual beef if it wasn't the Queen of Drill title?
1:10:20That's what it was over. And she was running with that Queen Von shit. You know what I'm saying? You think that was too much? That's her. That's her life. You could be anything in Aurora you want to be. Just don't play with me. that's good I like that did you know Vaughn or what's he around Vaughn was gay oh you did know Vaughn yeah and that's why she thought cause she was with him she thought she was gonna turn my people my city everybody against me when I don't give a I'm rolling about myself I never ask anybody to ride with me against the girl what was you and Vaughn's relationship like We were just cool I said we were cool I know I'm saying like you met him at school Where were y 'all even I don't know him from being from Chicago Was he the kind of person that you might have been cautious about Taking a photo with Or being out publicly cool with Because now we kind of understand How he was viewed I've never been cautious about taking a photo with anyone Because I take pictures with Who I want to take a picture with I don't You know what I'm saying what other people personal issues is is they personal issues but it's stuff that you get put in it from being cool with whoever you want to be cool with but I wish all of these men would just wake up and see when y 'all gone y 'all affecting kids y 'all affecting families and fans but it's the fans the ones who send the people off who sit at home studying our life with no life who causing people to crash out That's what I can't get with.
1:12:04I'm not letting no troll trick me out. My spot. That's real shit. A lot of fans have you doing more shit than you. It be pride. Pride, too. I don't have to prove to you that I'm like that. I don't underestimate nobody. What's you and Mama Duck's relationship? Because I know at one point y 'all were at least cool or cordial. Y 'all love Shayna. Y 'all grew up around each other? How do you even know her? We come from the same neighborhood. that's why when I was speaking on the grandparents and great-great-grandparents my grandparents grew up with her mother and her grandmother and them, like it go that far back even with the other rappers cause everyone cause you used to call her Auntie Sheena so everyone thought y 'all were cousins but are y 'all actually cousins?
1:12:50it was a respect thing growing up but y 'all had some words or something? what was it even over? everything, everything we good how do you feel about like all the hate she get because she's very vocal on the internet about what's going on you know some people be mad at her for her giving her opinion how do you feel about like I'll talk to her and I'll be telling her like you don't have to be but can't nobody tell her don't fight for her baby either and I don't have a kid so I don't know how she feel but I'll be telling her like even Doug told her I witnessed it when he was telling her like just stay in a female place you somebody mama.
1:13:32Like, that's what her son was telling her when he was here. Like, and I'd be reminding her, like, you remember what Doug said? I'm going to take your phone. You spent a lot of time around Doug. I grew up with them. We gang gang since party joint for real. But I mean, telling a girl to like stay in a woman's place, like if it was anything else, we would say that that was sexist. But do you feel like that's just important for survival purposes in terms of Chicago? Yeah. in terms of Chicago or anyone else anywhere else
1:14:05for sure um right now you and Doug's relationship huh break now you and Doug's friendship oh yeah that was like we called each other cousins of course I called his mother auntie run up and stuff like that but we was cool like I helped flag it on the radio too a lot of people was mad You said you helped slogging on the radio? How did you help do that? Because when the song first came out, I was singing that shit like it was mass. Ferris Nill was in my DM. Like, who was that? And I sold him. And the rest was history. At one point, Mama Duck said that you were hanging out with the people who killed Duck?
1:14:48We gonna leave that where it's at. Because I don't, me and her didn't talk behind that interview. We gonna leave it where it's at. Okay. Yeah, because we in a good space with each other right now. We don't leave that way. Are you like outside? It sounds like you kind of just like tapped in with everybody. I'm just, I'm just a girl from Chicago. Shout out KB NeNe. No, I was saying shout out KB NeNe. Oh, yeah, KB NeNe. That's my good sister. But no, I'm just a girl from Chicago. And a lot of these people come from the low end. And even if they're not from the low end, I done been around all of these people, neighborhoods and their families.
1:15:25I don't have anything to do with nothing. You seem like kind of the exception of the rule just because you've been able to manage being a rapper and staying in Chicago. Not something we always see, but you said at one point that you never smoked on anybody's dead people and that's a big part of why you're still here. Just on Calvo. That's why everybody was smoking on everybody dead in jail or strung out. Do you feel like you have to leave Chicago at this point? Yes. Because it ain't the people that you gotta watch outside. It's the ones who close to you. And there's so much hate in that city and there's so much talent.
1:16:07All throughout the city there's so much talent with every generation. And in Chicago they don't respect talent. They don't respect people. They don't respect themselves.
1:16:22What do you feel like is the hardest part? because you were just dropping that you was at your grandma's house on 39th Street and shit. So you saying that, people going to hear this interview, do you feel like people shouldn't be knowing where you be at or it's still good for you to just hang out? I said my mother still stayed on 39th prior back then. I didn't say she stayed there now. But we covered wherever we at, 39th, 99th. How did it make you feel seeing the situation that went down with the Mellow Bucks album release party? I don't have a comment on it. I was praying for all of the lives we were taking and the ones who was affected and impacted and even for the ones who did it.
1:17:09May God have mercy on all of them. Does that make it harder for you to even want to do an album release party or even do a show in Chicago? Or do they even let you perform in Chicago? I just did an album release party. And I posted the address. The thing is, I don't associate myself with anyone. I be by myself.
1:17:34Because I used to get caught up with being at the wrong place at the wrong time around people. But I just had a successful release party. So you seem like you know how to move. And like, how do you, or who taught you how to move like this? A lot of people ain't here. You've been around for so long. It seems like you've been able to strategically stay relevant. Also, you're still in Chicago. You still got ties to a lot of people. What's some advice would you give to somebody who's coming up and they're trying to do what you do? They might be trying to follow the drill lane and you already know where that could lead them.
1:18:11Just stay true to yourself and man your business. A lot of people be getting involved with stuff that has nothing to do with them. It'd be third party. I didn't keep God first. But sometimes you can't just say you get dragged in it. I get dragged in it all the time. I'm up to a lot of people. And I don't even know them. So you feel like people still do be trying to be on that with you? It's just because I'm a public figure. So that's the difference between me and a lot of other people. I'm a public figure and I'm a known figure and I'm from where I'm from. And if you did something to somebody who I love, I'm not smiling in your face.
1:19:00That's all valid.
1:19:05Who leaked your nudes? A nigga. A nigga. I'm going to be real. Break that day down. Yeah, I never looked. I heard about it but I never went looking that was a couple years back though like I was in a relationship at the time and the nigga was dogging me out and I called myself trying to move on and it backfired that's how that went and it was like I was bumping coochie with the boy and I went to sleep because this nigga was little like I never knew he took a picture of me nothing there. Yeah. And then he posted it on the fake page. You were sleeping? That's grimy. That's a whole different level of grimy right there.
1:19:52I was crying. Like, what are you violating me? Damn. That's gonna give you trust issues right there, huh? They do. But I came behind it with my photo shoot on the beach. My mother always said, you got the attention, keep them talking. That's what I did, that photo shoot with the blue hair and all that. Definitely. Gotta make the best of it. you said you don't have any kids yet you plan on having
1:20:19right now you say katie yeah my baby man this nigga drunk i don't know because i'm not even i'm not dating or nothing right now like and i don't want to be a baby mama so if i have somebody to keep i have to be a wife but then you to watch that. Are the dudes just whack as hell these days? Yes. Really? It's hard to find a good man. I'm not even trying to find him. It's just pointless. I have three room three bedroom condo, two king size beds. I am not bothered about a man being in home with me. And I pay my own bills, so what we doing? Do you think that you'd be more likely to be able to get along with a guy from a completely different place from Chicago?
1:21:11Yes. Or do you feel like you need somebody who understands? I'm so done with Chicago. Who knows, though? But I do feel like I need to meet somebody who's not down here. They have to be up there because then they become a jealousy thing. You know what I'm saying? when you in the limelight and all the insecure stuff. Then you being who you is, everybody throwing themselves at the man. But you gotta mess with somebody who lure you, who won't cross you just how they don't want you to cross them. And it be tricky. Because everybody doing stuff for likes. And viral moments, it's scary out here. No, Rima's a sneaky freak.
1:21:56He keep all his business DL. He ain't wrong to keep your business private. I don't actually know that. You be putting all yours out there, huh? Out of my side. I'm on the other side of that equation for sure, yeah. I be seeing you. Yeah.
1:22:13Matter of fact, a question I did have. Would you do more acting? Because you and Truth Teller, y 'all did like, you was in his short film. And you was playing like his girlfriend or something. What was that? Was that a girlfriend? I think he was. you gotta like woke them up to go do a drill or some shit oh yeah yeah a lot of people was mad that I had did that but I had that's business and everybody and then you I seen the vision though that was cool for y 'all to do that so like how did Truth hit you about that I first did an interview and then he handed me back to come back you know what I'm saying we did business like that or whatever but um I'm actually like about to um start filming in this series called Drill, the Chicago story.
1:23:00Directed by Eazy from Trust the Process Rapper Live Mio is like I'm like in jail right now. So when I'm coming home, that's when I'm coming in like the end of season one. And it's 10 episodes. I'm one of the main characters in season two. So I really do want to get into acting. People keep telling me I need to because they say my personality is. Yeah, I can kind of see it. I can see it too though. Could you imagine yourself on like Love and Hip Hop or some show like that? Baddies? Love and Hip Hop Chicago? They never reached out? I don't I don't discriminate anything or judge them, but I don't feel like that fit my image.
1:23:44It depends on what role I will play. I'm not going on no show to bust a bitch upside their head or they bust me upside my head and then you ain't getting paid. I think you get paid, but you got to bust a bitch upside the head probably. No, I'm not doing it. I got an image. What if I break my hand and I have to go to perform tomorrow and I have to go get surgery? That's low vibration for me. I ain't discriminating or discrediting or disrespecting neither, but it can help boost me up or whatnot. It depends on what they have me doing, but I'm not going on there trying to prove that I'm tough. That ain't what I even do in real life.
1:24:28Definitely. But I ain't turn down no check. But it depends on how they come at me with it. A hundred grand. You got to be on the show for a week and you got to be fighting and throwing drinks on people. No. That don't sound attractive. No. Because then they start messing up. I'm trying to get endorsements and stuff. you get to act in a certain way it affects your bed and I'm not the young Katie I'm grown I'm 32 now I was 18 when I got in the field with music we were 17 rather so like that I'm not chasing that I don't even watch me neither I used to but that was like when it first started coming on that's not entertainment to me for me to see people tear each other down I signed up for Zeus and I watched one episode of Baddies and I said I can't do it.
1:25:21It's not for me. No, I can't. But I love hip-hop on the other hand. I can do that, but it's to a certain level with that, too. You got to just know it depends on the contract. Let's say that. Definitely. Did you know you were going to have this much influence when you first started doing music? Did you know it was going to lead to all this right here? No. but it's crazy because I had influence since I was a kid like with regular life stuff and I have influence with dancing with me being me it's not even just with rapping they were talking about me dancing on top of cars they was talking about me dancing on my neck and everybody on top of cars and everybody on their neck I had friends and family members in my videos pregnant they was and stuff about that.
1:26:13Everything that I did is a thing now. So now I have to come back for everything that was taken from me and more. Tell them. You used to date OTF twin? No. It's a childhood friend. Who started that rumor? It was a childhood friend. Can we go to the next question? Alright, man. What about you and you billionaire, Black and Tay Savage just like pictures of y 'all hanging out when y 'all was younger in the block. What's y 'all friendship or how do you know them? Tay Savage my goal and billionaire black that's my brother. I grew up with him. But me and Tay Savage kind of like more so close. From the low end area?
1:26:55Where? Mm-hmm. What was y 'all friendship like? Were you just known from the block? Our neighborhoods used to actually be fighting. Oh, word. And I used to mess with one of their homies back then. and uh we used to be fighting them with my family and with our neighborhood like they used to be we used to be fighting them then going posting up on they block so that's how y 'all relationship got started on fighting and shit yeah but now our neighborhood is like cool what you think about him blowing up I'm proud of him when you got out Jeff I told him he got a lot to rap about He ain't got to talk about everything what the people already know.
1:27:40Go the other way and just go. You're going. I'm proud of him. But it's a tricky spot for somebody like him because, I mean, a lot of the fans, they want to hear him talk about certain shit, disrespectful shit, violent shit. He's a pretty smart guy. He is. This is true. He's very smart. He's been that way forever. He's been 200 steps ahead. He ain't going to let them trick him. I hope he don't. For sure. Did you know THF Basin? Mm-hmm. How'd you guys know each other? Well, y 'all come from the low end.
1:28:20Press his family. Yeah, for real. Yeah. Kids. Rest in peace. What's your thoughts when you see something like that? It's like, damn. F*** my head up. All of you. All of them. And that's why I'm done with front of the rules and everything. Oh, you don't go? I don't go to funerals. I don't go to balloon relief. I don't handle grieving well. Really? I seen my first dead body that I remember in 1999. My uncle, may he rest in peace. How old were you then? I was in kindergarten, what, five, six. And I remember the final view, and I remember everything. The smell, the flowers, what he had on. and my mother and grandmother tried to get me to kiss my uncle.
1:29:07And I went crazy. And to this day, I don't go up to caskets. Do you feel like it's hard to get closure about losing somebody if you don't go to the funeral? Because that's the one good thing I feel about it is it kind of at least feels like you're marking the end of this person's life. I think going to funerals is traumatizing. And it's different when you got to sit in that front row. everything be a blur everybody be right there but then when it's all said and done when it's over you by yourself you by yourself all the calls all the people who say they got you is not there they're not there when your mother father whoever grieving you your family your kids grieving you then to see the videos is even worse right I do hate looking at their body in the casket.
1:30:05Like it's always a bad experience for me. Like they just never look the way you want them to look. They just look like such a weird version of themselves. Like. Because their body and their soul and flesh is gone. The moment you take your last breath, you go either to the upper room or the lower room. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's understandable that you don't go up to the casket for sure. Okay, what else do you think we should hit here? We got almost everything wrapped up.
1:30:43Let's talk about the music scene that's coming up. What's some artists from Chicago right now do you feel like people need to be paying attention to outside of yourself? You know, you got your project that just dropped. But outside of you, who's somebody that you want to shed some light on? I like Jada Is that her name Jada? I like her Shout out Jada We supposed to be doing something too Who else rapping? That's been pretty hard I got like a Me and Mello Bugsby calling each other I'm gonna work with her too But she She have Half a million fans She got a big fan base So she not up and coming really for real Fendi the rapper she pretty hard pretty Leah I like her too Kashmir don't judge my heart judge my man y 'all cause I'm not leaving anyone out cause there's so many women that's doing anything in the city but you're saying rappers right?
1:31:45what about star bands? oh that's Melissa can't leave her out what's a star without her sister bands? oh yeah there you go I didn't even think of that Yeah, that's your daughter. I was at her birthday party. No, that's less. That's less. I was at her birthday party concert. I had took my nieces and nephews and little cousins there. It was one of their birthdays. They got to meet her and celebrities. They was acting a fool. They hit a ball. Who would you put on your drill, Mount Rushmore, if you only could put four people? Me or a few, man. All the time. Yeah.
1:32:27number one KD actually let's do it like this because I feel like a lot of females going to want to hear your version of the female drill Mount Rushmore so who would you put on there as of right now
1:32:42I'll put but I don't know because who considered I don't know if these people really consider this drill alright give me some names Let me see. Of course, I give Melo Bucks. She hard. She can really rap for real. Even outside of Drill, she a great artist. She can make a love song. I would love to hear that from her as well. Who else is Drillin? Star B is not really considered a Drill rapper. She fall underneath the umbrella, but not really. But people throw her in there because she's from Chicago. Name some female Drill rappers because I don't really know who considered. Katie got bands. Of course, I'm not going to leave me out.
1:33:26But okay, we're not limiting ourselves to Chicago where we are. Oh, I'll put Sasha up there. All right, there you go. I can't leave Sasha going hard out. So then give me one more. We got Katie, Mello, Sasha. We're going outside of Chicago. Jen Carter. Who? From 4-1 in New York. She's dope. I'll have to check her out. Okay. Give me one more from Chicago, though. I give it to Jake. That's big I give it to Jay That's big I give it to Jay Alright so what about for the guys Who are you inspired by But like from You saying any generation Any generation Just like if you just put them on the Mount Rushmore Who would you put on that Cause I can't leave Alshana either though I can't leave Alshana in the bread Yeah But they don't really fall on the When you do the drill They leave Kanye out Right So who would you put on The guy version of this
1:34:29I give it to King Louie Lil Durk LVG Duck King Vine L.A. Capone That's a solid foul right there Sosa Sosa I can't leave him He go in the top So you give me four He go in the top So you give me four out of those Who you get Go with Sosa for sure He won I go with Sosa Duck
1:34:59LA Cabone Dirt That's valid though I fought with it Valor right Don't nobody try to come at me They gonna be on you in the comments They're charging my heart My man Not my heart I love all of them But it is what it is People probably might not even mention me It's okay it's my thoughts and to any kids that's listening to this you know some female rappers they want to be the next KD guy bands they're about to get into this drill shit any advice that you would give them yeah stay true to yourself and don't rush things because of what you see on the internet you don't know what people going through outside of creating music and content and stay true to yourself do not get involved with nothing with these men or boys got going on with the streets because they're going to use you as a shield and move on with their life and go with somebody else.
1:36:00Catch a case and there ain't no more bonds either. Make sure you have an entertainment attorney. Take care of your business at all times. Do not rush to sign a contract. Dean, you look up you crying saying I can't drop I can't drop but you dropping freely as you want to now. That's real. J-Man used a girl as a shield literally. Held a girl in front of him. Did you play in the series? No, he said that in the air. And he said Tate Savage was shooting at him. I don't want to talk about that. Katie got bans. Sorry for the Kate.
