In short
Parenting Hell discusses summer holiday logistics and stress, including kids’ clubs, managing screen time, planning days out, and teaching children about money. It also covers a behind-the-scenes “camera on a yoghurt” setup while one host is in a hotel during home building work, plus a driving-test backlog and general life updates.
Guests
None. The episode is hosted by Harry (voice intro) with Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe as the main speakers.
Guest backgrounds (hosts)
Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe are UK comedians and TV presenters; they record Parenting Hell together and frequently appear on other comedy/TV projects. Harry appears as a co-host/segment voice.
Key claims
Summer shouldn’t be overplanned; use “buffer” time. Don’t cash in holidays too early if it leaves a long stretch. Kids may respond better to clubs their friends attend. Ear-piercing timing matters (needs weeks for healing; school/PE rules). Monzo Kids helps parents control pocket money and spending.
Notable examples
Rob and Josh discuss an escape room “Sherlock Holmes”-themed puzzle challenge; a hairdresser trip where iPads and phone hotspotting nearly fail; a “floating island” dessert in France; and the “camera on a yoghurt” hotel tripod rig.

Harry, can you say Rob Beckett? Rob Beckett. And can you say Josh Widdicombe? Josh Widdicombe. Well done. there we go it's a good one are you sexy and relatable lot this is my two-year-old harry saying your names with a little hiccup i also i absolutely love the intro that was sent in with the adorable hiccup and when harry started a little hiccup moment i had to take advantage i didn't hear it i think it's it's you might have thought he just stumbled on the word but it was a hiccup oh there you go there you go as a child whose parents sent a video in of me to you've been framed when i was three and who has relived it almost every year since i figured that this was my moment to continue that tradition and give him a solid tell me something interesting about yourself sort of story for future i don't think it's that interesting i'm afraid rachel he's being sexually relatable rachel 34 from chorley you've got you've got a really that that is a bold thing to bring up first week of uni when everyone's going around in a circle yeah because you've been framed i would say is ageless i'd say most people of any age group know you've been framed the chances of um harry was it harry hiccup harry who's two in 16 years this being a reference that his generation understands the chances are longer of no disrespect to either so who is it Again, Rob Beckett and Joshua.
3:44They're both in prison now, aren't they? Yeah, yeah. But, yeah, well, you've been framed as such a class. But then, who knows? Maybe, maybe, maybe it will. We don't give out 250 quid, though, do we? Which is a lot of money, actually, on reflection. That's a decent wedge now. I wonder how often her family debate whether she should have got the money for whatever she did falling through a plate glass window or whatever she did. Well, I think famously, I say famously is quite bold. I've told you the story of when I won£100 on a frutini. no i don't know if i remember this story but at school again my mom used to give me tins of fruit with a ring pull yeah yeah and a fruitini it was called and i pulled it you've won 100 pounds yeah great i've won 100 pounds take it home mom takes it spends it on all three of the boys we all got track suits we had a very similar thing plymouth 50 50 draw at plymouth yeah yeah we've spoken about this yeah four or five times probably yeah anyway how are you yeah you seem stressed i felt this is get on the instagram guys because have a look at how my fucking camera's set up here um well we still haven't put the sea golfing up yet hopefully we will at the time of writing we put the pants one up in the spirit of instagram but that's not what's stressing you out is it i'm in a hotel right so to be fair can i just say that We spent the weekend together filming.
5:07You came on an episode of Rob and Romesh. Yeah, we should say, because a lot of people thought we'd gone on holiday as a fall with Tom Davis and Romesh. I can't be clear enough how far that would be from the reality of my life. Oh, Rose, some holiday started. I'm just off to Paris.
5:26Are you fucking insane? No, we were filming an episode of the Tour de France for Rob and Romesh versus, and you need a peloton and you came and helped with it anyway you'll see that on the show so that's why we're out there and we had quite a nice time it can be quite stressful at points doing that show because there's a lot of weird things you have to do but you left in quite high spirits yesterday but i feel like now i had a lovely time i had a lovely time i had a lovely time in paris um it was a lovely crew it was a lovely experience then i got the train which was very pleasant. I mean, there was so much traffic in Paris, we had to end up jettisoning our car to the station and walking the last 10 minutes through quite a rough area, the Garden of Orton.
6:13Yes, not a nice place to come into. It's no St Pancras International. I don't want to go all xenophobic on you, but fucking liven up France. We're giving you an absolute beauty of a station. Exactly. So that was nice. Train, and then I got a car home. and then um but the thing is i got in the kids had stayed up for me to get back at that i was getting back at 10 but i they're they're present so they wanted to stay up and it's summer holidays yeah so they stayed up so then i got them to bed at like 20 past half past 10 and then i just went to bed and then i had a bowl of all brown because that was all that was in the house
6:52lovely and then you just wake up and then my son wanted me to do lego with him which is nice but it means that then suddenly i had 10 minutes to have a shower get out the house come here and suddenly i'm doing this again so it's i'm all a bit at sea a bit discombobulated i've got a little camera and yogurt but you can see let me just show you let me show you how this is it's a niche only fans the old camera and yogurt well this is i'm in a hotel room with a camera and yogurt this is how my camera's set up currently so so that i've got enough height on my camera right that is yeah that that's not a way that's not a way to operate no so do you want to talk us through it yeah so are you facing a window or is it a drawing on a window it's a window that has kind of what's that stuff you put on a window frosting but the frosting has got i presume it's exeter though i don't know It's like an illustration of old...
7:48Medieval, yeah, a medieval map. Or not medieval, but kind of... So what's out that window? Can you not see anything? Anglo-Saxon map of Exeter. What's behind... Can you open the window? There's then a window above. Would you be disappointed if you stayed in there for the night with that window set up? Do you get any real light? Yeah, you do. You can see. Oh, yeah. Okay, cool. So a bit of frost in the window above. and then you've got your um laptops on a massive box of yorkshire tea why have did you why have you got such a big box of yorkshire tea now there's a there's a two pints of milk behind that also so did you bring two pints of milk and a massive box of 200 tea bags with you to the hotel 40 tea bags right okay so i bought some milk and some tea on the way and i bought a yogurt for because for sustenance but actually it's proved perfect as a tripod but now the issue here josh you cannot eat that yogurt until the end of the show because if once you've eaten that the lid's gone and you've got an empty cup i know two episodes and a couple of um ads and then michael said we're going through a lot of dates so once we hit the dates i can have my yogurt right okay cool that's good okay so that's another something to look forward to and then you've got a book couple of books on there in an upside down cup yes because yorkshire tea laptop book uh notebook normal book upside down cup yogurt and then the camera on top of that and obviously the two pint of milk base two pint of milk base do you are you concerned that the heat of the laptop will warm up the milk i hadn't thought about that and i am now yeah that is a consideration that you could have curdled your because it's i would say a milk bottle you can't curdle milk in an hour 40 we'll find out we'll find out geez my life it's so stressful oh just just stressful what you got anything on the after this oh our kitchen we've got a kitchen now rob oh right yeah because the reason you're in a hotel is you're still getting building work done which it seems like the same plot from a sitcom that's got on for four years now because you was getting your kitchen done at your old house i know but you left there our kitchen's not done but it's usable now oh that's good yeah so we've got a cooker we've got an island still on the floor so last night you slept on the floor yeah yeah yeah it's no life do you feel like because you slept in a hotel room for three nights in a nice hotel bed that the floor was a hard harder pill to swallow with my family to a hotel room on my own there's there's a bit of um there's wow that's really powerful yeah yeah there's also there's also a hotel room on my own yeah i know but there is also a world where you have a you know a bed with your family which i'd say is obtainable i don't that i'd say that's a month away because i would say for someone who's now like you know very successful landed one of the biggest jobs in tv i'd say before that it was unacceptable i wouldn't say strictly should be no no what i'm saying is yeah no what that's what i'm saying is though what the way you're living is you know almost what your origin story would be about you could explain your current situation as almost like a sob story from the the you know growing up sleeping on the floor with no bed you know that but it's actually you're doing it the other way around yes yes you know this is yours should be in your oh he's rested on his laurels he's in his silk pajama era but you're curled up on the floor like a cat well this is how i keep myself hungry rob the other way i keep myself hungry is i is i put my yogurt underneath my camera so i can't eat it they're the two ways i keep myself hungry oh my god what what the fuck does this look like now what is my life life yeah well it's just unfortunate circumstances if you keep redoing kitchens yeah well i wouldn't be recording this in the fucking kitchen anyway but yeah well no but i'm just saying that you're you're doing the house again and it sort of spills into the other rooms doesn't it yeah yeah and that's fine that's some criticism i'm just saying it's just that is what's happening yeah no i totally agree i just i just want my life back i find it through your life I find it incredibly difficult to go away and come back and just start work straight away.
11:59I find that really fucks me up. I think the Rob and Romesh, especially episodes, are, it's very strange to record because there's loads of like lulls where you're just hanging out chatting. Lots of downtime. So you're like, you know, I should be fine here. But then all of a sudden you're dressed in lycra with your belly hanging out and tourists are shouting at you from the street. Yeah. Which is quite a high level of stress. then you know you're in a race or doing something that's slightly dangerous which affects your sort of adrenaline and then you come back and then you know you can fully relax it's sort of like you go which is you know yeah and it's just it's just that thing of like getting back and you're like oh fucking hell where's my wash bag oh god i've got a suitcase full of clothes and i'm you know what i mean yes i just wanted to unpack my suitcase and here i have done that yeah camera on a yogurt no um can i can i say as well though because it was quite a boozy weekend for me tom and rom there was a lot of beer being ordered and stuff like that how did you because i don't imagine you're in those sort of situations with lads much because obviously you're working or touring alone well i've just got to be very clear to you yeah that's not a boozy situation considering my past no no no i know what i'm saying is i've i found it incredibly sedate no no not that it was rock and roll but i'm saying you're you're away with friends that traditionally you would have been having beers with is it any flicker or is it hard or is it fine no because we had dinner i actually didn't realize how much people are drunk because we were having dinner yeah and actually um till romesh told me quite kind of earnestly how proud he was of me for doing strictly i didn't realize how drunk people were you saw him you saw him open up to you yeah yeah um he wasn't that drunk no it wasn't it wasn't we weren't drunk it was just like all away on a like we were abroad in like a french cafe and we had lovely beers and it was all like quite fun and jovial because we just met up i didn't know for me that would have been my main issue rob come on was the lack of decaf tea in france was absolutely killing me and and and the french don't care and they don't give a do you know what and fair enough i love it they just go no there isn't we don't serve we don't serve snails and that's fine they don't do decaf tea that's totally acceptable it's their country they can do what they fucking want i made a mistake i i filled my my decaf tea uh tinderbox thing that i bring you know my little uh with a number of decaf tea bags maybe eight yeah and then i started using them in london in the day before because I'd stayed in London to do a gig.
14:43Fucking amateur hour. So I arrived in France with only three decaf tea bags for the whole thing. It's just, it's not going to work. It's my own fault, Rob. You set yourself up for failure. I should have bought more decaf tea, but I was in a rush to King's Cross and then I couldn't find any and it hit me hard when I got there. See, I'm sat there going, poor Josh. He's not drunk for two years now. All his friends are having beers around him. izzy cobin little did i know you're sat there panicking about your decaf tea tinderbox yeah exactly exactly this is probably why i would struggle in a kind of post nuclear fallout bunker right because i'd just be worried about getting through my decaf tea and what i was going to do then and trying to unpack your suitcase we're all in bunk beds is there any drawers now we might as I'll fucking unpack, guys.
15:36We can't be living out of a suitcase. No, Josh, it'll only be a couple of days. Let's live out of the suitcase. I live out of the suitcase. Get some fucking hangers out and unpack your stuff. It was really fun. Everyone was welcoming. Everyone was nice. It made me realise it is quite a magical show, really. What's quite exciting is when you go on a show that's got a huge amount of history and success and it's just quite normal on there. You go on a show and it just works like clockwork. It was just very, very slick. I was very impressed. Oh, thank you very much. It's nothing to do with me. It's to do with Lily and Bill and Molly.
16:19It was really fun. I had a lovely time. Amy and Jack. I had a great time. And I will be honest, I just wish I'd got home earlier, but I live in Exeter. It's my own fault. again sure the tea bags yeah now you're just a bit tired it's okay look i'll warm you up i'll get you going have you got any any stuff you want to talk about your children or do you want me to go first because i spent quite a lot of time today my son's doing his first ever day in a club he's only doing one day right he's doing a club with his two little mates uh yeah and so that's quite interesting he's very insistent he's only doing one day which is fair enough which is fair enough my daughter's doing a full week with her mates in a club this week i think it's good we do that they do one week a year in a club like for the for some holidays and they love it and it gives them a bit of structure and then that that's when i put all my work into if there's any little bits and bobs that could be moved i'll try and do all in like one week yeah so they are my daughter's got another week in a different club actually later in the holiday i mean it's difficult because I've been away, Rob.
17:28I sound like you. Josh, you have done three days. You've not done like a tour of Afghanistan. No, I went to St Albans and I went away on Wednesday. Oh, so you left? Oh, fair enough, because I left Friday morning. Yeah, no, I left Wednesday, so I've kind of been away all week. Yeah, and then you're back. Now I'm back. You've left again to another hotel room. I've left again to go to another hotel room. Have you got a busy week this week? Not too bad. It's actually quite not too bad a week. So tell me about your parenting, Rob. um well went to um well a couple of things went to um an escape room i'm gonna give matches small business shout out at the end i paid he's not giving me any money operation escape west wycombe i'll give you more details later but have you ever done an escape room with the kids no have you ever done one no it's not really my scene i imagine my daughter would love it i think you'd love it with your kids yeah so like i think it is your scene you love sherlock holmes Yeah, but he very rarely did an escape room No, but he solved puzzles Yeah, but I like watching him do it I don't like a Sudoku or a Wundle or something like that It's not Sudoku, you don't just go in and do crosswords and then leave No, no, no, but I just mean puzzle-wise Everyone in, do this word search, you're allowed out But it's, no, but they're like, it's really creative So they've actually got a Sherlock Holmes room at this place Oh yeah Where you go in and it's basically, it's all themed But it's not called Sherlock Holmes, it's sort of like so they don't get sued but oh okay so it's basically a detective one with a brown coat um and you go in and it's so we did a garden one where you go and it's like this magical garden you've got to basically solve these puzzles so that you can release this wizard or something but it's really interactive it's a bit like crystal maze but also a bit like using logic to solve things and the kids loved it and it's great because you're like you feel like you're actually doing something with them yeah because and it's quite quite difficult so they sort of Were you ahead of the game with it?
19:22Were you having to go, were you having to let them do it? I thought I'd be sitting back like Pirlo and then watching them run around and then sort of go, give me the ball and then play a little through ball so they could finish. Actually, I was looking at the camera saying, please, can we have some clues? We're struggling and we're running out of time. It's actually quite challenging even for adults. So they were good though. And also there's loads of good things that they can do. that if there's a small little couple of escape room depends how good you are at it so how long does it last one up to an hour if you get to an hour you haven't escaped you just you're done yeah just like game over and the door opens you go um but um yeah you we did it in like 57 minutes oh my word that's tight it was tight yeah but we had to find one little thing we couldn't find it was doing my head in but we did have a few well it was something you needed something to put on something and it was hidden and we could not find it.
20:19And where was it? Somewhere? Yeah. I mean, I don't know if you needed something to put on something but it was somewhere. Yeah, I had to find something but I couldn't find it and we had to get it and put it somewhere but I'm not telling you what, we had to find where it was where we had to put it. Yeah, yeah. But it's, you know. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, as an effect of the anecdote, that's the main thing. No, no, exactly. Everyone's still gripped. Yeah, exactly. I would say my kids at eight and ten, that was really good fun.
20:43Now, Rob, It is a special part of today's show. Summer shenanigans. And that's a good sound for summer shenanigans. Where we give our best advice for not just surviving, but having an actual blast during the six-week holidays. And it's brought to you by Monzo, who with their free kids account are helping children become more independent with their money. Yeah. Do you want my tips for the six-week holiday? Go on, hit me. Pace yourself. Yeah. Yeah. It's long. It's hot and it's hard. Sometimes it won't even be hot. Here's a little tip. Go on. Do not take your holiday. If you're doing a holiday away.
21:21Yeah. Don't cash that in week one. Unless you can save money. You can save money because of your term date. Say sometimes kids have like earlier breakups. So if you can fly on that date, but then you're staring down the barrel of a five weeker. That's the equivalent of Chesney Hawks coming on, opening with I Am The One And Only, and then doing the rest of the set. But when I saw Chesney Hawks, he opened with it and closed with it. Exactly. If you can afford two holidays, have one at each end. We like to call that the Chesney. Yeah. Start with it and end with it. Or one of the other tips, just never go camping ever.
21:56Yeah. That's not really a tip. That's sort of a personal mantra of mine. What do you do if you need to work and your kids are in the house during the summer holidays? I like to give them a little thing called a device. Yeah. Which is slightly frowned upon, but I wouldn't do it every day for six weeks. I watched a lot of TV in the summer, Rob. Yes, but I would say you watch too much TV. You've become completely obsessed by it. Your only knowledge base is an eight-year period where all you did was watch TV, and you've since gone on to use that as reference points for a very good career in the media, but also written a book about it.
22:29And I would say that's great because it's work for you, but I would say you are the exception, not the rule. Yeah, okay, fair. Well, let me put it this way. There's a halfway house. What I would say... What's that, an INTZ TV show? What I would say... Go on. And I'm liable for this, yeah? And Rose has brought me in on it. Don't overplan the summer. It is a holiday for them. You can't just back-to-back-to-back-to-back stuff because you're worried about them being bored. Yeah. Sometimes kids have to find their own entertainment. Experience buffer. we need buffer or me and you are the worst for no buffer here's another tip rob go on go on tip me off if you're looking for summer clubs yeah i started a whatsapp group with the parents of my daughter's friends and said what summer clubs is everyone doing so that then they're much easier to sell to your child when you go your friends are already doing this yes i would say kids are more interested in what their friends are doing than what the actual content of the club is look what the friends are doing and then offer that to your kids that would be my tip the other good thing to do is this is a tip that um we've done before find friends with the kids and then if there's four of you you can almost split a week up where you go like i'll take wednesday off and have all the kids with me on wednesday and have a day with them and then if the other two or three people take the thursday or the tuesday or the friday off and then the same four kids just get moved around from house to house perfect that's a good system what about days out rob what's your stance your stance on days out i'm a big fan of the old trip to the seaside fish and chips on the coast but then it's difficult the british seaside because you want it warm but you don't want it too hot yeah yeah you don't want a 30 degree or in dim church what you don't want rob is one of those days that's so hot that a picture of the beach you go to ends up on the tabloid newspaper with what a scorcher written on no the worst case scenario what you what you want is you go do you know what i'm not sure about the weather i'm going to take a jumper but that jumper never gets worn yeah i'm feeling quite confident for the summer holidays we've put in enough things but we haven't over packed it we'll see how it plays out rob yes the holidays are a great chance to teach your kids about money as well aren't they a monzo kids account lets you schedule pocket money gives the kids their own card a child-friendly app view and gives them fee-free spending abroad With the added security of parents seeing spending notifications in their app too.

26:06Oh, the other thing, because I've been doing like, we had a couple of days because we've been so busy where we said to the girls, we are not going out for two days you can wear your pajamas all day you can watch ipads up until 12 and then you can watch tv you can play in the garden you can do puzzles just do nothing if you want to do nothing we're not going anywhere doing anything and um they got quite into it enjoyed it and then the third day i had those errands to run and i had to get my hair cut and we went out in the morning we had to go somewhere and i said you can bring your ipads for this for this little we had to go to my office to speak to some builders and i said bring your ipads if you want yeah they brought them they're on there for like an hour while we were talking to the builders come back i said put your ipads on charge because we're going out in the afternoon and i was getting my haircuts i was i don't mind having an ipad because you don't want to just sit in the hairdressers staring how's that holiday went to the builders went for a haircut with dad but that's what we used to do well exactly and that's what i've got stuff to do errands that i used to get taken on yeah i can't just bake the fucking cake every day looking like some sort of god dad so i mean I've literally never baked a cake with them ever.
27:08Nevermind every day.
27:12So I said, then I said, um, charge your iPads. Maybe don't have iPads while we're at home now for a couple of hours. Cause you'll need them later. Charge them. One did, one didn't. Right. So one's, then we'd leave the house. One's on 9%. The other one's on like 85, but the other one's now really gloating. So we get in the car, my phone's dying as well. And they said, can you charge? I'm trying to charge your iPad in the car for the five minute journey to the hairdresser. You don't get good charge in a car. You just don't get good charging. Also, I need it for my phone. So anyway, I'm charging their iPads.
27:40So then we get to the hairdressers. My phone's on like 3%, right? Yeah. Well, maybe actually about 15%. Theirs got like 20%. We're in the hairdressers. Anyway. Surely the hairdressers have got a plug. Well, yeah, but my phone's now going down like a percent every like 30 seconds. And I look at it, they're both hotspotting me. so i'm on 10 and running two ipads internet off this phone right and then i'm like girls look you could do this but because i've been charging your ipad in the car my phone's dying you can your hot spot's gonna go yeah you know but i didn't really want to plug in because i thought like they've got to learn that if they want something like you've got to charge it and then and then and it was so funny one of them went fine daddy i'll just go mummies Lou was eight miles away.
28:30I was like, yeah, go on then. Has the hairdresser got Wi-Fi? Yeah, the hairdresser does have Wi-Fi, and I probably could have logged them onto it, but it was just, I felt like... What's your feeling? I'm pretty, I'm going to say it, I'm pretty balls out. I don't care about this kind of stuff. They're hairdressers. Mine does my eyebrows, but it's never done balls. They always go, do you want me to do your eyebrows? I'm like, well, if you're asking, it's yes. No hairdressers have ever gone, do you want me to use your eyebrows if they're fine? There's probably some dirty old long one on there. Do you want me to shave your ear lobes?
29:04There's always a lobe for me. Oh, I've never had that. I've got downy fluff on my lobes. Because your lobes and nose, I think, when you get to right ear, that's going to be a big challenge for you because you're one of those people that it does start sprouting. You're a big, strong, hairy boy from the South. I tell you, Rob, I don't think I did because it's since I've been to London. So have I told you I'm on statins for my high cholesterol? no i didn't know that you're on that well you eat well don't you well exactly so i had high cholesterol on one test and six months later i still had high cholesterol and i was like look i've literally everything that you're told to do to keep your cholesterol down i do i am i am the worst case scenario i've got a boring life and high cholesterol so what do you what is what not brings up what diet brings on high cholesterol is that meat red meat so fatty stuff you know fatty stuff crap like that alcohol no exercise all the things that you know i'm pretty i'll tell you what doesn't bring on high cholesterol all brand and the front cover of runner's world a yogurt on a cup on a book on a laptop being consumed at 11 30 is not a cholesterol boy no but you are you have got it yeah so i've just got unlucky with high cholesterol rob Yeah.
30:21So if I look. Nothing's going your way, is it? No, it's just not. You'll get gout soon for no reason other than just it's you. But he's like, they did a test. They were like, look, you haven't got any calcified cholesterol. So you're in a really, you've had no problem with it. You're getting tested for it. Every time I speak to you, you're getting tested for something. This was the last test. This was, this is a related thing. This is all related to that. You're having a crisis about your health. You've been getting NICO scanned. You're getting statined. but should I be going more to the doctors?
30:52Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Well, you don't know. You shouldn't be. But now this is all related to that last one. Got you. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So he's like, you're totally fine in terms of calcified cholesterol, which is what the problem is, is when it calcifies around your heart or whatever. I don't know. But you want to get it down and there's nothing you can do. You're doing everything. Do these things. Man, my cholesterol has gone down. he just couldn't believe how fast it had gone down Rob he was like so are you bragging well no but this is where it comes to he said actually he said before this I was looking at your statistics and you are a I can't remember the phrase he used but he was basically like you're a super responder to medicines
31:45that first responder but super so you you get extreme um response to medicines so if you take something does that thing is the same with like caffeine and alcohol then that's what i said to him that's the first thing i said to him and he said yeah there's every chance the same thing that's doing the medicines is because your liver isn't breaking these things down quickly enough you are getting extra response to the average yes you will get a bigger hit off caffeine but your statins will kick in much harder oh okay so finally at the age of 43 i've caught to the bottom of it all why i'm so affected by everything because like when you used to drink it would you were drinking a sort of like i don't think we can take the whole drinking and put it on no but what i say is though You would be more affected by alcohol more quickly.
32:43Yes, totally. Which would then lead to bad decision-making with more alcohol. Well, I don't think it was just that. No, but I don't think it's going to help. If you're battered after three pints, you're not going to go, maybe I shouldn't have the fourth. Because psychologically, you go, I've only had four beers. Yes. Although I think really, I'll be honest, once I'd had one sip, there was no way I was stopping. But what about sugar, though? How does sugar affect you? I'm not too bad for the old sugar highs and lows. Actually, I don't... No, I'm all right. I could have a lake of pudding and then go to bed.
33:22I tell you what we had in France the first time I've ever read it, Floating Island. Oh, we had two floating islands, didn't we? I don't know if you've even heard of it before, have you? No, I'd never have heard of a floating island, but I liked it. Big Tom Davis educated us on floating islands. It was meringue and custard. Yeah, so good. The first one was better than the second one. The second one, I'll be honest, the first one was really good. And then the second one, we were in a restaurant, and we asked if he had a floating island. He hadn't heard of it. And then he was like, oh, yeah, yeah, I'd do that bit.
33:55And then he got it out of a Tupperware under the bar. Yeah, that's not how I like. You know, I'm new to floating islands, but that's not how I like to operate with the creme anglo. Does anywhere in the UK do floating islands? Could you write in and let us know, please? Also, I went full French. I had snails and I had a steak hache. Yeah, do you know what? You're quite the Europhile when it comes to... Oh, I'm a full European, me. Yeah, you really are. You are a man, you know, you could have... You cut me, I bleed blue and gold stars. You do, exactly, yeah. Not in Edinburgh, but... I'm painting roundabouts, but they're blue with little specks of gold.
34:33Yeah, exactly, exactly. I do love Europe and I'm I'm I hate I hated Brexit and I hated the fact that we put a big divide between Europe because I think having access to that many cultures that many places so effortlessly and that you can just move there and live there and work there and what I really got the benefit of that when I was young traveling around Europe and it was amazing for me and it really opened up my world from coming from southeast London and I'm always gutted when i get to the thing to the passport thing and we've got a bigger queue and i think do you know what we fucking deserve it yeah yeah so no i'm a big old euro dude do you like euro disney love euro disney um it's not been called that for 20 years no i don't gamble i'm not a gambling guy you look forward to euro 2028 yeah more euro things eurovision no don't like that but it isn't anymore is it australia in it yeah well yeah well i mean i've been doing other things i've got my phone oh my 10 year old got her ears pierced josh oh this is good this is exciting so tell me all about this so she wanted her ears pierced and we were like she hadn't asked for ages and then we were thinking going oh she'd always really wanted it done and then like it's the summer holiday so it's a good time to do it because they need to be in for a bit before they can be removed and also you need to put like anti Is there rules on it at the school?
35:58So they can have them at school, but they've got to be taken out, I think, for PE. But you can't take them out straight after getting them done. They need to be in for a set amount of time. So because we'd been on our summer holiday where we're going swimming a lot, when we came back, it was like, oh, hang on, we've got quite a few weeks here. Can I be honest? If you've got a stud in your ear, what situation in PE is that going to really impact? unless she's i get it if she's got a big dangly circle circle earring well i think maybe if like you're doing netball or stuff like that your arms going around there if it would just normally go past an ear it wouldn't scratch but if there's a bit of metal there yeah i mean come on anyway so but they've got to be in for like a few weeks before they can be removed so that it doesn't heal back over so if it was a good time to do it i thought 10's quite a nice age because she's at the station now where she wants to be a bit older there's kids in her class that have phones that message all the time there's some kids doing other things or dressing in a way or having that i sort of feel like oh that's a bit too grown up i don't want them to i don't want her to be on tiktok and all that whereas getting your ears pierced for her well they're only gonna have to be removed in a year as well these kids what do you mean well when that was from tiktok yeah yeah that's what i'm saying so it's a way for her to be really grown up and feel a bit older up but actually it's quite low impact and stuff and then the only difficulty was the eight-year-old one in hers done but and we were like no you've got to wait till you're 10 yeah just because it's unfair on the older one and i and i think that happens a lot with younger siblings get to do stuff earlier than the older ones did but i think no it's good to hold firm because you feel like you're being mean on the eight-year-old but actually you're being mean on the 10-year-old by letting the eight-year-old go ahead so i think um 10's quite a nice age between year five and you're six and um she loves them they look beautiful as well they're really like sort of you know she's so happy and proud of them yeah and how painful because my daughter so she's eight so this has been a long-term thing that when she's nine her best friend and her from london have got the same birthday and rose is going to take her up to london and they're both going to go and get their ears pierced on the night when they turn nine oh that's nice yeah so it well the apparently Lou said using the needle is better because it's a bit cleaner than a stud gun thing but the stud gun thing is less painful and quicker because it's basically bang and it's done Lou sent me a video because I couldn't go unfortunately but Lou sent me a video of her getting it done and she was like just stony faced and just was like yep fine it's fine and I was like oh she smashed it and then when it was both done Lou went to her you're okay you're okay and she did that you saw her bottom lip go and yeah because it was the relief i think and like stuff but no she it's been fine since we've been cleaning them out and stuff well lou's been doing that to be fair and um yeah she's great but they're like silver with little sparkly looks a bit diamondy so it's sparkly but we probably would have had it done earlier but she didn't really bring it up it was only she brought it up before it's a good time to do it so when's your when's your daughter's birthday though because we'll is it she might have to Wait, it's the summer.
39:04Autumn. So that's the problem. It depends on the school. Yeah, I don't know what the rule is. We'll have to look into it. Maybe we should have to do it at Christmas holidays. Yeah, I mean, look how long it takes. How long? The other thing with it is. Oh, it pretty needs to stay for six to eight weeks. Oh. Yeah. So that's why we didn't. We'll have to have a look into that. We'll have to have a look into that. The shop, you've got a book. The shop at the first week of the summer holidays was rammed for this very reason. Yeah. because you've got to give them the six weeks where it's a heel. Yeah, rush out.
39:36Or I reckon, why don't you just do a surprise? Why don't you do it at the start of some holidays in the month before their birthday? Because their birthday is this autumn. Oh, right, so you need to go. Well, let's wrap up here. You drive up to London. Get her, mate. That's what I thought was next year. So I've just given you another thing to think about now. Yeah. You've just, I've just dashed your daughter's birthday dream. No, but it's good to know. It's good to know. So she went to have her cast off actually, Rob. I will tell you this. So this was just before I was leaving. Cause I had to, I had my suitcases with me.
40:12Last Wednesday. Last Wednesday. Oh, you got your suitcase at the cast removal at the hospital. No, well, she wouldn't let me. So we drove to the hospital. I had to leave my suitcases in the car. Yeah. Um, yeah. Anyway. So we cast removal. that's the very similar thing very scary yeah very um she just has to sit there while they kind of cut it yeah they're kind of but they put it on your skin and show you it doesn't cut don't they yeah yeah but you still think your arm's gonna get cut off yeah yeah well also actually the bit she didn't like she's very stoic she would like just go through it but the bit she didn't like was when it opened up because I think it suddenly felt like her arm, which had been safe and encased, was suddenly out.
41:04Do you know what I mean? And they're a bit more feeble, the arm, after they've not been, you know. Unfortunately, she then had to go for an x-ray, and then they were like, you need two more weeks. Fucking brutal. Oh, my God. Well, she's not got your super responder gene, has she? She's not got my super responder gene, has she? No, I'd say that Rose has not been having an affair with Wolverine. So she, but she's in a smaller cast now, like a kind of just not above the elbow, just an arm cast. Oh, that's much better. And she can swim in it and it's much better. But yeah, what a... What a come down.

41:43What a come down. What a bloody come down. What a saga.
41:51Okay, time for a special part of the show called What Happens on Tour, brought to you by Monza. We've spent many years as comedians, Rob. We have been on tour or going to and from gigs with many comedians, including each other. Yes. That includes sharing cars, sharing hotels, sharing dressing rooms, sharing the bills in restaurants, getting on with people and learning how to split your life. And petrol costs. Petrol costs. Fuel costs was a big one. Of course. Now, how did you find it? I found working out how much everyone owed for petrol, very stressful. Yeah, I was overly polite and would always come out shortchanged.
42:30Yeah, and I'd get very frustrated with people that swerved it. I'm not going to name names. No. And I still think of him and go, you tight, tight. And if you saw him today, you'd still ask for that£10. It wasn't even my£10, it was someone else's£10. Yeah. Do you know, originally I did a lot of tour support. I did Stephen Merchant, I did Alan Carr. And they paid for everything because you're the support. and now I try and do the same because you're doing, you're paying it back, Rob. Yeah, you've got to pay their dinner. Exactly. Exactly, Rob. That's how it works. You can't be on tour with someone and then you go for a curry after and then they go, we're splitting this 50-50 with a support.
43:06No, exactly. Have you ever done that? No, I haven't, no. And I wouldn't do that. Do you know, I once went for a curry with an act after a gig and he fell asleep. During the food? During the food. Sometimes in these situations, Rob, you just want to be able to say, just Monzo me. Yes. Oh, just Monzo me. Because with the Monzo app, Rob, you can split, share, divide, settle. You can do all of those things, even with people that don't have the Monzo app. Yeah, I know. And if it's just one thing, like dinner, you can split it and you know who's paid what. But if you're on the road for longer, you can have an ongoing total.
43:39Exactly, Rob. The same with like a group holiday. If you're going to have another couple. Yeah. You know, it doesn't mean I'll get this one, you get that one. Just do it. Monzo me. Sort it all out on the app. And then everyone knows what they've paid and you're not having a row at the end going, oh, we paid for the drinks that night and they didn't pay for drinks. They didn't get around it. Exactly, Monzo me, mate. Monzo me. Monzo me. You can split the cost easily or edit the amount and it sorts all the payments and reminders automatically, Rob. Yeah, and after a long day on the road, you don't want to start doing maths and calculations.
44:07Exactly. Leave it to the Monzo app. Tell you what I can't help with, though. What? People falling asleep in a curry. No app can help with that. Monzo, download your new favourite bank. To apply for a Monzo current account, you must be 16 plus. UK resident T's and C's apply.
44:47No artificial dyes.
45:18How's Rose getting on? Do we dare ask about driving? Yes, she's got her test booked in. No more. She's doing her lessons. It's still... Someone needs to sort out this test situation. I know it's not... Yeah, it's mental. You can't get a test. National priority. But it's literally almost five years since COVID. And they've still got a backlog. There's still this insane backlog. then so so it's just like i was talking to someone when i was driving um talking to someone the other day and they he was he has to go on every monday at 6 a.m or whatever time it is it's like glastonbury tickets to try and get a cancellation and there's just thousands of kids now it's mental but it's not the first one's not the problem it's if you fail which i did and which a lot of people oh yeah which is good for a lot of people because you're you become a better driver but i probably failed and then did it again in six weeks do you know what i mean yeah i mean you've got to pay for all those lessons again to keep it in your head but otherwise it's like you fail all right see you in nine months and then you've got another chance it's like mental no that yeah i will does rose want to announce the date and then all the parent health listeners can go to the test center and sort of clap her in no i don't think so no does that won't help okay just just throwing it out there yeah yeah because most people i'd say fail their first test so you're looking at another nine months do you know what i mean i didn't but i only did automatic and i still think just do automatic there's no point learning gears to do it in gears now is clinically insane mental is i don't unless you want to drive like classic old cars or that you're into cars but if you just want to like get a run around most cars now are automatic there's loads of second-hand cars automatic when you go abroad there's this fallacy that when you go abroad manuals no there's loads of automatics abroad for higher cars it's not i mean it's only five years until the car's driving its fucking self anyway would you have to do a driving test to be in a car that drove itself probably yeah because you'd have to be able to take over wouldn't you you can't shove a kid in a in a computerized car and say take it to liverpool it then then Oh, I've got two things here.
47:40One, we're going away to that Europa. We're going on a little road trip later in the summer holidays. You love Europe. To Europa Park. I mean, the Euro guy. Absolutely Euro guy. What were you spending? Euros? It's weird, you know. I don't know if I'd like Britain to have the Euro. Now, let's dig into that. Yeah. No, I know what you mean. I know what you mean. I like being part of the European Union and Europe, but I like having a country's identity. But I do think when you go to France, you really know it's France, whether it's Euro or not. They've got a strong identity. Yeah. They don't care.
48:13I love it. Which country has the strongest identity in Europe? I'd say France is fighting hard. So we're sat in a pub and 10 different nationalities come in. Which one's the most obvious? And is this accent or speak it? Because that's too much giveaway. But you're looking at them. No, I think it's more you are putting 10 different pubs in European cities, which is most obvious that you're... Oh, right. So as soon as you open eyes, it's obvious where you are. Yeah. Right, okay. Without reading. I'd say... I'd say it's probably France, those little bistros. If you're in a beer hall. Yeah. Like those, that's well...
48:55And then the little bistros, the French ones. I'd say the ones where it's difficult are your Scandinavians and your Dutch. But when a Dutch bloke walks in, you don't realise that you know a Dutch bloke until you see a Dutch bloke. They're big shoulders, big long boys wrecking themselves. Yeah, do you know what? Everyone's got their own identity. We've come to the end of this. Everyone's got their own identity, except perhaps kind of Belgium and Luxembourg and those lot. No, those... Do you know what? Those lot, you can only ever say those lot about Belgium and Luxembourg. Anyway, we're going away and we're going with another couple and they're two kids.
49:30Everyone really gets on. Then my eldest started a... Keys and a bar. No. I message group with all the adults and all the kids. Oh, here we go. It's my first group chat with my kids. Because we've got one with my kids and Lou. Me and Lou and the kids. And I message group. So my daughter will I message us from the iPad. Yes, so they've got iPads and then we've got phones, obviously. so it's the first group where i'm in with other people and my kids and it's great you find it funny because my daughter will i message us my son's not to that level yet of um of of tech um so my daughter will occasionally message me when i'm away she's just got no pleasantries about it do you know what i mean quite direct well yeah because all the she just doesn't understand the the years we've spent working out the grammar of texting and how it kind of works and all that kind of stuff.
50:28That's not, she doesn't know that obviously. So it's just. Don't come back. Stuff like that. Just die. Yeah. Yeah. Hi. Oh, you'll just be chatting normally. And she'll just write, got to go now. And that's the end. Do you know what I mean? I like that. Yeah. Go on. It's good. It's good. It's, it's, it's simple. So what's your iMessage group like? It's great. A lot of banter. I'm taking a lot of flack because we're talking about roller coasters. We keep putting up photos of me looking scared on roller coasters. They're enjoying that. The other dad's saying, who's going to eat snails? Some of them say no, because we're going through France and Germany.
50:58Who's going to try currywurst? That kind of stuff. But it's good. Good stuff. Yeah. And the spelling's all over the place, which I find so endearing and cute. And that's just me. Oh, here we go. Someone kill me now. I don't mind it. I don't mind it. Do you know what I mean? You've got to put away the easy chances. It's a horrible, easy... You've got to convert the penalty, Rob. You've got to do the tappings and do the worldies. The long ranges will come. Yeah, exactly. How many long ranges have there been in this podcast? I'd say the backdrop falling down, halfway line. That's a halfway line kind of shot.
51:38By the way, we've absolutely flown on Instagram this week. Oh, we are a couple of influencers, us guys, don't we? Can I ask a question? Of course Your cat called Graham or something Alan, Fred and George Alan, Fred and George How are you going to feel when Alan dies? Sad, because he's a cute little cat And go, oh that was a shame He was nice, and probably chat to Lou for 20 minutes about it Until she's alright Then sort him out Then crack on I could lie If you want No I won't be happy I won't be happy I'll be upset but I'm not going to I'm not going to have to book a day off work no fine Alan goes missing yeah so when we got back and Fluffball was missing for 12 hours I was in a dark place how dark a place would you be if Alan isn't there when you and little Lou get back from holiday?
52:46I'm more concerned and worried about how upset the children will be. And I will proactively hunt him down, try and find him, see what's going on. Right? No, but shake like, you know, I'll be out there with a dreamies, giving him a shake, saying the name and all that. I'm not just in the house going, well, if you don't come, you don't come. However, now with the dogs, we've got two dogs. Yeah. One really good, Fred, just follows you around on a walk. Will chase a few animals, always comes back. Like, George, there's something not right with George. He ain't got eyes that feel like there's any humanity in there.
53:18Right, yeah. He's totally off the wall. He feels almost like an AI dog. Like, he don't really like being petted. He just sort of wanders about. And then if he sees animals, he just goes for it. We go for walks. He will just bolt sometimes. And I don't know what to do anymore. And I'm at the point now where if he goes, he goes. I try and call him back. I don't take him off a lead anywhere dangerous now because he can't be trusted. But if he does something mental, now I'm a bit like, look, all I can do is offer him a good life, a treat, and a lead. And if he don't want it, he don't want it. I can't, you know, do you know what I mean?
53:52And that's because I lost him the other day and he turned up at the house two miles away. Did I tell you this? No. I was in a walk with them. They saw some deer. They run off, right? Now, the deer roam everywhere, so it's very hard to know what walk they're going to be on. So now I'm much more vigilant. Anyway, he chased a deer. The problem is when they chase a squirrel or a fox, normally the hole or tree they go up, a dog can't get through or up. But with a deer, a dog can always fit through the gap a deer's got through. Yeah. If they're going for a hedge or whatever. Anyway, he went. So I spent, I had Fred with me, 20 minutes in this like field woodland that would fenced off essentially.
54:28It's like a walking path. Couldn't find him anywhere. Eventually took Fred home, put him in the back door. And I was going to, and I quickly like put him in. and I was going to go back out to find him. As I go out to find him back on the walk, because I've got to go two miles back to where it all was, I hear him in the front garden. I've got no idea how he got back. It wasn't even a walk we normally do. They go, oh, they're used to the walk. It ain't the walk. So I don't know what happened, but he's back. And I'm just like, look, he knows what's going on. He's a countryside dog. Let him get on with it.
55:00Yeah. So you're pretty laissez-faire, really, with your emotions and dogs. You have to be, because there's nothing. I'm trying my best here. And if he wants to fuck off, he's going to fuck off. He's a dog. You know what I mean? What more can I do? No, fair enough. And also, you can't keep him on a leash forever. I'd rather him be off a leash with a little bit of jeopardy and he enjoys being out and running. You can't have a whip and not let it run. You can't have a whip. And I've done all the same training I did with the first one whose recall's perfect, comes back. If I go on a walk, he just sits behind me.
55:31If anyone comes up, I call his name, he comes back. George is a bit like that, but George occasionally, his head will go. He's like Roy Keane. Yeah. Once his head's gone, he's gone. And there's something you can do about it. Okay. Yeah. Well, we'll keep an eye on it. We'll keep an eye on it. Keep an eye on it. It'll be all right. It's just like, yeah, it's just a bit of a loose cannon. But everyone's got these kind of loose cannon dogs, don't they? Yeah. Yeah, exactly. They're harder work than kids because they're just a toddler forever. Well, well, quite. Yeah, exactly. Should we do a small business shout out?
56:00I was about to do a small business shout out there. Yeah. I've got one ready to go if you want I'll do an escape room one I've got it in my pocket and I do apologise to the person who gave it to me in St Albans but I will get to it I'll do the readout, so this is the escape room we went to in West Wycombe which was absolutely brilliant great to do I'd say especially on a rainy it was good to do in the summer but on a rainy winter's day it's perfect to get out hello, I'm an independent escape room in West Wycombe who would love a small business shout out Emily had actually emailed but we hadn't got to it.
56:34Big fan of the podcast and a local to Rob. He emailed and then you showed up. By coincidence. Oh, wow. Yeah. Oh, yeah. That's great. My name is Emily and at 30 years old, I own and run Operation Escape off West Wycombe High Street. We've been open at our new venue for 18 months. Where is West Wycombe, Rob? Is it related to Wycombe? Hi, Wycombe. Nowhere near. Now, it's sort of Bromley. I think it's still, it's Bromley. So it's between Beckenham and Bromley. Okay. so it's not where I live it's near like 20 minutes away there are three escape rooms sorry we've been open 18 months we have three escape rooms that are suitable for a range of ages from families to children's parties or work events there are three escape rooms to choose from whether you want to save cats from the evil jealous Lucifer there you go that's not the wrong to do that couldn't give a fuck no that's not what I said I do care about my animals and if Lucifer was around the corner I'd pick my cat up or you can lift the curse from our enchanted garden.
57:33That's what we did. That's what you did. Or find the antidote for Sherwin Hones in Victorian London. Oh, here we go. Here we go. We have an escape room for you. Have that estate of Arthur Conan Doyle. I'm also currently writing and building a full 80s arcade inspired room. Oh, that's my bag. You're in there. I hope to open later. The escape rooms are suitable for smaller and larger bookings, and we also offer party packages and gift vouchers. you can find out more at operation hyphen escape.co.uk or check out our instagram at operation underscore escape underscore bromley good luck emily good little business she's running there very good how you sexy beasts og listener here and absolutely love the pod especially episodes with just the two of you sorry michael um also really she really hates him and michael chips in also really appreciate how openly you talk about mental health it genuinely sets a great example for men and boys and i'd say i'm gonna add this women and girls rob oh okay yeah yeah i wondered if you might give a small business shout out to my husband he was made redundant about 18 months ago from the finance world and despided to back himself and start his own company get involved in this rob yeah fuck those finance nerds there's a gap in the market for golf clothing that isn't a t-shirt with a terrible pun on it yes so he created 44 the word four as in f-o-u-r then t as in golf t and then four as in golf for a lifestyle golf brand selling t-shirts hoodies and trucker caps for people who want to look good on and off the course crucially it works for your kind of golf rob you know the quick nine holes that turns into four hours three lost balls and a quiet cry in the car before coming back in claiming it was just a quick one is that you well yeah yeah but let's not get bogged down in that i'm actually i'm improving oh it's nice stuff though 44 for f-o-u-r-t-t-e-e-f-o-r-e.co.uk instagram at 44 get 10 off the code parenting how 10 thanks so much keep doing what you're doing it's brilliant vicky thank you vicky thank you very much Vicky and good luck with the business Josh I'll see you next time mate can't wait
