In short
Pilot Plus discusses Apple TV+ mystery drama Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, a “camboy” premise that turns into a Rear Window–style crime investigation. The episode focuses on the show’s central hook: a woman watches what she believes is a crime during a cam session, but others don’t believe her. Guests also debate the misleading title and the stress/tension created by intertwining the mystery with custody/career pressures, plus general thoughts on streaming release schedules.
Guest backgrounds
Steph is a long-time cam-boys/OnlyFans fan and claims first-hand familiarity; she’s a former cam boy herself. Boyd and James host the discussion. They mention cast/creator context from an Apple TV+ panel.
Key claims
Don’t read spoilers; watch episodes 1–2 together (dropped together). The show is more mystery than explicit cam content. Casting highlights include Tatiana Maslany, Dolly de Leon (detective), and Brandon Flynn (cam boy).
Notable examples
Maslany’s character (divorcee, mother, fact-checker/sub-editor) witnesses the alleged crime on cam; the detective’s “solve this murder” exchange in episode 2; Brandon Flynn’s role described as mostly “in his pants.”

Transcript
Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:07Welcome to Pilot Plus, your extended guide to every show that matters. And we are committed to your enjoyment of this podcast, which is why we chose a show this week called Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, which is what I like to think a promise that this podcast brings you each and every week. But in this case, in a more explicitly sexual way, because this is the new show from David J. Rosen. It's directed by David Gordon Green. It stars Tatiana Tiana Maslany, Jake Johnson, Charlie Hall, lots of other people. But the crux of this particular show is Camboys. And so who better to tell us about it than Steph, who I'm sure has lots of first-hand experience in this area.
42Steph, tell us all about Camboys, what they do, why it's important, and why you love it so much. Yes, James. As you know, having been a former a cam boy yourself um i'm a long time fan of cam boys yeah so this is crazy this show and i have to admit like i'm going to sound like a real old lady but i didn't actually i know about only fans and i know i know about the porn but i didn't know that this was actually a thing that you could pay to talk to somebody and then allow them to pleasure themselves and you in turn over the internet which is going to sound like I'm like grandma internet I totally get that okay but I didn't actually know that that was a thing okay oh oh Steph sweet summer child I know but I know like you're on OnlyFans you can like tip people and then they do special things and you can like direct message them and then get them to do crazy things for you and all that kind of shit but I didn't know like there was this whole world of people out there just like normal people who just you know not the people on OnlyFans aren't normal but you can just pay to like have like virtual dates with and stuff like that so this whole thing opens opens on Tatiana's character having having this date and I was like initially I thought this was just her boyfriend so I was very taken aback when I realized it wasn't her boyfriend and she was pleasuring herself in the last six minutes she had of the runtime next to her fridge whilst he was also doing the same so I was like oh I don't know if this is for me Margot's Got Money Troubles was quite the thing so I was like oh I'm not sure but then what it descends into I mean I we really cannot give away any spoilers because what you think this is if you haven't read anything about it it absolutely isn't um and I would I would say be like me and don't read anything about it beforehand and just be unendingly surprised by what happens.
42So Tatiana's character, for all intents and purposes, fact checker and a sub, what we would call. It's not exactly quite clear what her job is. We should say, just to clarify, a sub-editor rather than a sub in the sexual sense. I mentioned that only because of the topicality of this particular show. Very good. She may also be a sub in that sense, but that's not addressed in this episode. No. So she is a mother of one. She's a divorcee. She's moved into a new apartment. she's a little bit lonely so obviously she's turned to this particular person who is a I would say her favorite um cam boy um and I really don't want to give anything away so they have a little they have a bit of relationship and it's all set against the backdrop of what was clearly a terrible divorce and she's trying to have a really good relationship with her young daughter which is very interesting dynamic and she's got an ex-husband who's a massive shit um but it becomes clear that there's obviously reasons why and she has to navigate her way through something that happens which i absolutely think we can't give away i think you're right yeah okay so what i would say about this is my god what yeah i'm just gonna repeat myself again what you think this is it isn't and then I was just so shocked and by the end of it I was like I have got to find out what happens I've got to keep watching this um because it's so the shocks are so shocking and she is absolutely brilliant in this role and it's almost like you are you're being taken along the ride with her every time she discovers something you're like like you you're like It's almost like a choose-your-own-adventure book, isn't it?
25You're like, oh my God, I'm with her. She has got no idea this is happening. Oh my God, no, this can't be. Oh no. And yeah, I absolutely loved it. I'm all in on this. I think the title is wrong. So you're saying they didn't actually guarantee maximum pleasure, that was your... It's misleading in the way I think they could have had. I don't know. I don't know whether I'm... I think I wouldn't... This is not something, unless we're reviewing it, I would have looked at the artwork, looked at the title and thought, yeah, I'm going to give it a go. But it would be a shame if you don't, because it's really fantastic.
59I think the thing we can probably give away is that while on the cam with said young man, young man of the night, she witnesses what she believes to be a crime. I think we can say that, that there is a thing there. Well, yeah, that's the log line for the show. So the log line is so she witnesses something on the cam and people don't believe her that has happened. Yeah. Yeah, it's in all the press releases. this and all that that that is literally the central premise of the whole thing okay fine yes have you seen i would say is that um it's crucial to watch episode two oh is it because yeah because the thing that we're not we're being vague about that she witnesses then there's then a kind of massive cut to something else right and do like oh okay what's happening here which is it's like a bold move it's almost in the realm of smoke in fact in the yeah there's like there's a whole there's a whole kind of it takes a whole different turn suddenly in episode two which i thought was brilliant they're dropping the first two all at once we should say so they're dropping the first two on the first night and i think for good reason yeah yes that's why yeah the final scene of the first episode is an absolute shocker which ends with with a i has to be said an absolute tier one cliffhanger like it's quite extraordinary i mean i'm impressed with you stuff actually well to be fair i think for you it was logistics and time but but it is one of these things where i could not not watch the second episode of the first one this is how i felt but i literally watched it 10 minutes ago so i was like oh my god no and it picks up in such an interesting completely you know kind of rug pull way that you don't know what's going on um in the second The second episode.
35Oh. Yeah. Absolutely. Yeah. So it's really, as a whole event, the first two episodes are fantastic. I think I compare it to like... Should be watched together. Oh. Should be watched together. Yeah. Absolutely. It's all right. You can watch them tonight. You know, when you... I mean, when you're not watching Man City losing Bournemouth to give Arsenal the league, you can watch it later. But I thought it was... I really... I was surprised at the extent to which I loved it because I did go to... I may have mentioned it before on this podcast, but I went to the Apple Slate launch event in Santa Monica, California.
09Oh, did you? In my car. That must have been really nice. Yeah, there was a presentation about this. There was a panel featuring the creator, David J. Rosen, and Tatiana Maslany, and it was very interesting. But I was thinking, oh, and they talked a lot about the Canboy phenomenon and how this is now, you know, there's like two or three shows currently like Euphoria is doing the OnlyFans thing and another one I've forgotten already. Oh, the one we reviewed a couple of weeks ago on Apple TV. Margot's Got Money Troubles. Margot's Got Money Troubles, as you mentioned just now, exactly. And this is like a slight variation, the Cam Boy specifics.
48As you say, Steph, you know, it's almost like they become your friend and like a kind of virtual date, even though you're paying for it. And then you can have a sexual moment if you want. It's all up for grabs, put it that way. But that, I was expecting it to be about that, really, that phenomenon. So did I. But it isn't. But it isn't. And in a way, it's like Rear Window, isn't it? It's like a modern version of Rear Window when famously Jimmy Stewart thinks he sees a crime committed on the other side of the tenement block. And so that's the point of it. It's the mystery at the heart of it that is so compelling and gripping.
26And at the same time, you've got Tatiana Mazzani, who's always great, but she is fantastic in this role. Because it's quite a stretch in a way to think that, well, for me anyway, it's quite a stretch to think that a bright, smart, clever, experienced woman of the world would fall for a young, hot guy on the internet. I don't know. I think it needs a bit of work from the actor to make that completely believable. But she pulls it off fantastically well. she did sell it quite well i know that on paper you're right like because she's like what 40 and he's he's i guess what like 23 like and and you've got to think there's someone who looks like tatiana mazlani let's be honest is going to but equally like you talk about she explains how traumatic her divorce has been what she's going through how much she's been hurt and you know how her husband who she apparently was very close with kind of changed and turned out to be an absolute shit so I think it's like it's that sense of safety isn't it like that she can control the terms and it's very much about self-protection I think it's totally believable that that plot I think it's totally believable that she was like she's time poor other things were important she doesn't have she doesn't want anything complicated she like you say James she wants something that's completely under control I think that's that thread is like that completely believable to me oh yeah as a 40 year old curly haired woman yes who's just discovered can boys and your weekend plans obviously already sorted now that you've discovered they exist but that's fine I think Leanne B.
54George could be a lucrative cowboy by the way oh my god I just want to say right I'm just going to say this that's my husband it does drive me mad that whenever they've got some kind of you know female lead and she's she's slightly off kilter she's gone slightly off kilter she's always got curly hair I could name literally like she's always got curly hair like as a curly hair person. It's just like, they always, it's like, right, what can we do to immediately signal that her life is in free fall and she's slightly off kilter? Don't give her a perm straight away. I'm just saying, as a side point.
32I thought what you were going to say was something else, which I found, my one criticism of this show, which I generally loved, I thought, I think it's really good, I'm going to absolutely finish it, you know, within the next couple of days, if it's all on Yeah, me too. The Apple portal. My one critique would be she's the fact checker in this some kind of media news operation. It's all a bit vague as to what exactly it is. Yeah. Whether it's a newspaper or an online thing. But she's the fact checker of all of these stories. And her co-fact checker colleagues, by the way, are funny. They are really funny double-act.
04Her sidekicks. The boss is a Devil Wears Prada-style, Anna Wintour-style British monster. Why are they always British? Why are these women at the head of these things who are completely over-the-top fascist dictators within a work environment? Why are they always British women? Anyway, so I thought that was a bit much. So Tara Summers plays this woman. She's great. She's funny, but she's quite over-the-top. But the masterstroke for me is Dolly de Leon. Is that how you pronounce her name? As the detective. Yeah. Who is from The Triangle of Sadness. Have you seen Triangle of Sadness, the film? She is brilliant in that film.
45She plays an absolute key role, particularly in the second half of Triangle of Sadness. Oh, I won't spoil it. Anyway, about to spoil the film there. People haven't seen it. Not content with spoiling every TV show. No, that's true. Anyway. He's killed before and he'll kill again. Yeah, she is such an off-kilter version of the detective role. I thought that was brilliant. There's one bit in episode two where her colleague wants to, She says, well, should we go for a drink or a coffee or something? She says, no. And he goes, no, come on, you know, stop being a sponsor. She goes, well, I would quite like to solve this murder.
18She says, if you were more interested in solving murders as well, maybe you'd be better at your job. I just think it's really well cast. It's really well done. I really enjoyed it much more than I thought I was going to. I don't know why I didn't think I was going to enjoy it particularly. But maybe you were right about the title. I think the title is eye-catching, isn't it? I think, you know, you say to people, maximum pleasure guarantee, that is an eye-catching title. so but it implies something implies that it's going to be more about that element of the story yeah yeah i think when we're living in a world where the titles are like you know we talk a lot about like things like gone generic titles yeah yeah and yeah and i suppose we're now i i expect it to kind of no it's no it's the thing is it's probably clever it's just that i think we are so saturated with titles that what the title is that's what happens someone is going to be gone do you know what i'm saying so this this actually probably is more clever than i'm giving it credit for um it look but it seems like it's something else and then actually it's a delightful surprise so yeah yeah it's a whole mystery thing i i yes you're right the title is misleading and arguably off-putting but i'd rather that than another sort of one word generic title that i can't remember like i've never forgotten the title of this show and that in and of itself means it's doing something right um yeah it's not no it's not what i expected either i you know i i thought it would be a kind of an only fancy typey exploration thing but it is it's a whole mystery that unfolds the thing that i found about the show more than anything is it is super humanly stressful for i found it incredibly stressful in a way that i really didn't expect like at the end of the first episode i really i knew i was going to go straight into the the next one but i needed to take a break and have a cup of tea because it's really like anxiety inducing and part of that it's not even so much the mystery and they've done it quite cleverly because you get her embroiled with this cam guy and there's a mystery but they're obviously thinking right we need stakes it needs to be it needs to be life or death for her like it needs to be more than oh she's you know there's a thing going on is it real is it a scam is it pretend like what you need a way for it to be something that really affects her life and so they introduce this this quite i guess unusual element whereby she's the mother and she has limited access to her daughter and is in the middle of a messy custody battle and because it's a very well-worn trope where the deadbeat dad like maybe gets like one day every now and then and the mother's always like kind of glaring at it oh you're a deadbeat you can't see her she's staying up you know but this is like that sort of gender adverted version where she doesn't really get to see her daughter uh and so she's desperately trying to be on best behavior to prevent her husband from taking her daughter away from her and obviously getting embroiled with a cam boy not necessarily uh great in that regard so yeah i i thought that all of that stuff was really stressful because you're really invested in how will the sort of unspooling of this mystery impact essentially the foundations of her whole life right and her relationship with her daughter who's incredibly cute and they're really sweet together uh and so that that makes you so invested in her well-being and in her side of it that it's really really stressful i think in in the first the first kind of um sort of 20 minutes you're rooting for her you oh yeah you really you're like oh god please and i think that's what you're saying it is really stressful you're like oh please no and she has to be so passive in her interactions with her ex-husband and you're and that's the i found that really stressful because you're like you you she cannot shout at him she needs to keep him on side she needs to play so nice and in the background she's got this awful situation going on that she knows is just she has absolutely no control over and so everything in her life is completely out of control went from a situation where she was so in control she could pay for the time she was spending with someone and now it's just completely blown up but yeah I think you're totally right but the writing is so clever in that you you're rooting for her so immediately that you're yeah you've obviously I know what you're like James so you've been taken along with it and you're like oh my god oh my god oh my god did you watch it on your phone after the first episode no i didn't i carried on watching it on the massive tv which is what i think i found it so stressful but it is really good and there's an excellent piece of casting that we're actually not going to get into because it comes in a little bit later on but there's another very good bit of casting in this uh which is a fun appearance from someone shout out as well to brandon flynn for playing the cam boy whose entire role in the show is pretty much in his pants so that's true that's true you know he he i was about to say he pulls it off well but that would have been a poor choice of words he does pull it off well and on that note maximum pleasure guaranteed uh which i think we all rather enjoyed and lands the first two episodes of which land on apple tv when boydy they're all there the first two episodes are there now they arrived there now the first that's right because it was embargo from last week you are quite correct so yes first two episodes are up now and then it is dropping weekly excellent right we were going to have a bit of a spoiler chat for Halfman, but then it occurred to me that it's literally still ongoing.
17We've got two weeks left until the finale airs, and we're not going to put out a spoiler before then, so you will have to wait for that. Instead, we are going to tee up the post bag.
32Triage. It's the post bag. Okay, let's see what we got in here. So we had a message from Phil, from good old HK Phil. And HK Phil had some comments about, yes, Boyd, Gary. Specifically, he was listening to our recommendation of Gary, the bonus secret episode of The Bear. And he said that apart from being what he says, what an incredible sincerity of performances from the two leads and acting masterclass. Then it occurred to me, says Phil, I had been to Gary, Indiana for a bet once while working in New York. I accepted the challenge of leaving Manhattan 5 p.m. Friday, driving to Vegas, and then being in the office for 9 a.m.
10Monday, having been allowed to drive back. This took me and my friend 40, I guess, hours of constant driving. Gary was en route, and he has a picture of him in Gary. But, and this is the coincidence, wait for it, because you're just thinking, why is HK Phil telling us about his random road trip? It turns out that he was in Gary, wait for it, 20 years to the day before Gary dropped. Oh my God. And he's actually provided photographic proof of himself holding a copy of the Chicago Tribune from that date in Gary. So yeah, he went to Gary. So, you know, who knows? Maybe that was it. Maybe John Bernthal, Ebermoss Backrep, they dropped it on that day knowing that it would resonate with HK Phil.
52That is cray. Oh my God. Isn't it? Isn't it so? Incredible. I think I've been to Gary and Deanna as well. Have you? Oh, here we go. That's it. Were you round up Michael Jackson's house, Boyd? Was that it? Were you in Neverland? Is Neverland in Gary? I know he was born there, but I don't know if Neverland was in Gary. No, it probably isn't. But anyway, yes. Neverland was in California, you absolute doofus. It would have been Neverland 1.0, like the precursor to Neverland, where the Jacksonville guy grew up. Let's just not go down this whole Michael Jackson. I can't think why. No, I did a trip across America when I was a student there, And I'm pretty sure we definitely went through Indiana, and I'm pretty sure we stopped off at Gary.
35Because for me, it's all about Close Encounters of Dirkheim, is a big substrand of it set in Gary, Indiana. So I'm pretty sure I demanded that we stop there. So I think I went to a diner there, is my memory of it. I'll have to check with my friends. But yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what happened. So yeah, Gary, Indiana. What a renaissance. Would that have been, like, Boydie, like 40 years ago to the day before gary's maybe that's it it's everyone went there on the same day oh my god i think it probably was later let's say yes okay yes yes we'll say yes we'll say wow yeah gary's really having a moment isn't it wow yeah right we have a question here from stewart stewart says just to say i have no problem with you talking about things you've watched that aren't out yet i find it good at keeping me aware of which shows are coming up so i don't forget to look out for them and it's much less annoying than going on about people getting annoyed about you talking about it so thanks yeah all right next week yeah wall-to-wall stuff that isn't out yeah we'll talk about okie dokie right we have a logistical question here from daniel who wants to quiz you boyd on release schedules are you ready oh god daniel says hey pilot team sorry for the long email but i need to get this off my chest.
54I've just been watching Rivals season two, and I've heard about the release schedule being three first eps, then a few weekly eps, then a break till it comes back and finishes the season off. Now, I've been an advocate of streamers utilizing the release schedule to tell the story each show's need. Sometimes a show can benefit from a staggered release. Example, Andor. A weekly drop of that show, I think, hurts it. Daredevil Born Again season one, I think, benefited from having two eps dropping at once during that mid-season. However, I do think both seasons of the show may have benefited from a binge drop like Netflix shows do.
28Wonder Man absolutely benefited from it being a binge model, as do a lot of Netflix series like Harlan Coben. So now to Rivals. If I remember correctly, the first season was a binge drop, and I think it was to its success. Is there a reason why season two has not followed this model, and is it going to be to its detriment? Should more streamers utilize the streaming schedule and run times to their benefit? Surely it's a major advantage they have over normal terrestrial television. Am I being crazy? Would love to hear the pilot's thoughts on this. Dan. Two words. World Cup. I do believe that the Disney Plus release schedule for rivals has been affected by the World Cup.
08So the first six episodes, which do go out three in one go, then another three weekly. Then there's the big gap for the World Cup. And then it's back after the World Cup in July. with the final six episodes. So I think it's a bit weird, I have to say, and that's not an official line from Disney. I think there was a press release. I definitely got sent an email where it said it made the point of that, and then there's a break during the World Cup. So that made me think, oh, is this the reason why there's a break? Because it is a bit weird, because it's not like people like a bit of counter-programming during the World Cup, because obviously not everyone's into football, James.
45Accurate. So, yeah, so it's slightly odd for them taking a break, but that seems to be the case. That seems to be the reason why they're doing this. I guess it might dissipate to some extent the publicity or whatever the show gets if it's on during the World Cup, that basically people only obsess about the World Cup. I guess it's one theory about it, but I think it's a bit odd, I have to say. But I interviewed Russell T. Davis for this podcast yesterday about his new show, which starts on Sunday, next Sunday. And he was saying about streaming release schedules and terrestrial release schedules, and do you put it on the iPlayer, and do you put it on ITVX, and do you make it all available in one go?
25He said, no one knows. No one knows what they're doing, is the point he made. It's like, it's all a big, like, we'll try this thing here. Shall we do that? So I think Tiptoe is going out, right, live on Sunday night. It's five episodes. Then it's going, and Monday night. Sunday, Monday for two weeks. And then, oh no, Sunday, Monday for a week. and then Sunday, Monday, Tuesday for the second week. And it's only going on Channel 4 online in the beginning of the middle of the second week. And he's like, try explaining that to the one show. You know, it's quite complicated. Yeah. But because people have no idea what the best release schedule is.
59And even Netflix, which at one point would only ever put everything out in one go to binge. Now they have these quite complicated, I mean, Stranger Things was incredibly complicated. Remember, to the extent you got it wrong, James, famously. I don't know what you're talking about. These release schedules are really complicated. The reasons for them are also sometimes bewildering as well. I think it's a real shame that Half-Man wasn't put out as a bingeable watch on the iPlayer because I think that the show is so propulsive that if you watch it in one go, you have a completely, with everything, I mean, it's a very first base thing to say, but you have a completely different experience.
38And I realise that not everybody has a six-hour stretch to watch something. but I a lot of the shows that we do for this I that I end up really loving are the ones that I simply cannot stop watching and that would have happened to me with um maximum pleasure guaranteed I think so I think I mean I am I I don't know it's really it's really hard I don't understand Boyd when they decide and I know you don't have the answer this isn't when they decide who can make that decision? Oh, it's the higher-ups at the various channels or streamers who make that decision. There are people, you know, controllers of programs and schedulers, you know, they all work together to come up with what they think is the best way forward with scheduling stuff.
26But that's the point. But none of them know for sure what the best route is. I think with Half Man, my theme with Half Man is having interviewed him for this podcast, Richard Gad, I think he was saying that he deliberately built in a lot of tension and cliffhangers at the end of each episode and surprises and shocks to make it like a weekly treat of a show. So I think it's almost in the line of duty category whereby to show it all in one go would be slightly to spoil it because then everyone's talking about it at different times. Whereas I think he wanted to make it a weekly event. So I think it's partly down to him that it wasn't put out all in one go.
03I actually support that decision personally. I think a show like that. I don't, you know, so you know Baby Reindeer. Baby Reindeer was Netflix though, wasn't it? It was out on Netflix. Right, so this is, I think, I'm just saying this is just my opinion. I think that Half Man hasn't had nearly as much attention as Baby Reindeer because I think people binged Baby Reindeer because it was on Netflix. And I think if Half Man had been on Netflix and people had been able to binge it, I think it would be being talked about much, much more because it is a completely different experience to binge, to event binge something.
36I think it's not as big a deal for lots of reasons, though, because, you know, there was a lot going on with Baby Reindeer. Exactly. Yeah. It's like one of the most eye-catching premises and, you know, And then obviously the real-life revelations tied up to it. Exactly. Yeah. Exactly. So I think that's an extreme example of a show that was unbelievable. The cut-through was unbelievable, and I don't think anyone expected it, because so many people found the story so captivating because it was true in quotes. Heavy, whatever level of quotes. But equally, another reason why this Half Man hasn't had quite the same punch through is because it's on 10.40 at night on BBC One.
17It's in, you know, which is, so it's on quite late. It's complicated, but I think, I still think it makes sense for it to go out weekly, that show. I think it's good this week. To go back to the original question though, I think honestly, you know, I think sometimes it all comes down to something slightly simpler, which is success. Because let's be honest, even if it weren't for the World Cup, they could have dropped Rivals as a binge watch on week one, and it wouldn't have intersected with the World Cup. It would have been fine. But Rivals season one was such a massive success, they're eking it out for obvious reasons.
46And this is something that I think Netflix were very much against that. They were all about, we are the binge drop model. But equally, they realised the value in a cultural event. And you can drop all the Stranger Things which they've spent a squillion dollars on on one day or you can eke it out over a number of different dates especially and you know they do it with film as well like there's a reason why like the hunger games was it the finale was two films and then breaking dawn you know the final twilight two novels because they're trying to extend it harry potter as well you know it's not because the narrative absolutely needed two films there's literally a bit in the final hunger games film uh well the first half of it where there is a cat chasing a red dot on a wall and i was like this is a fucking metaphor for this film which should never have been two films um i get it where they try and make it into a cultural event they try and draw it out and make it so more and more people get involved in it but like you look at something like adolescence and again dropped all in one go i don't think anyone talked about a tv even half as much as that at any point last year so i don't think i think sometimes like the subject matter or what it is or something that's so special it will cut through regardless of the model that they use that is my thought it's interesting it's an interesting topic though it is but you're right the streaming you know the streaming media means that you can kind of think about a story and think about the best way to tell that story and you do have a number of different options and as you say like if you're doing something on the bbc you can put it out weekly you can whack it all up on the iplayer if you're doing it on channel four you can stick it out a couple here a couple there stick it online a week later do whatever you want it's a fucking mystery yeah yeah yeah right let us see what else we've got okay message here from darren not that one and darren says have loved all contributors but wanting to send some love to Steph who I think is brilliant as she is very often very binary in her opinions but in a way that makes sense and is consistent unlike James thank you Darren uh I do also I do also need Boyd and James to take a long hard look at themselves and their inability to maintain a long-term relationship with a female colleague just saying anyway my question is yeah I know rude.
51Do you have a specific actor that no matter the genre of the work they are in, you will always tune in and love the work without exception? This is not the same as an actor who makes any production better, e.g. Toby Jones but someone whose very presence can make you watch stuff outside your comfort zone and enjoy it. Mine, says Darren, is Steve Carell. Whether The Morning Show, The Office Four Seasons or Rooster, he has made the show for me. Jason Bateman. Is it? 100 % Jason Bateman. I will watch anything with Jason Bateman in. And I think he has incredible range. But as I think I've said before, when we watched DTF, St.
30Louis, he's always Jason Bateman, which I find incredibly comforting. He has a Bateman-esque quality. A Bateman-osity. Yeah. And I will watch absolutely anything. I have two, actually. So can I say another one? And I will also watch anything, anything with Billy Bob Thornton in. That's controversial. I love Billy Bob Thornton why I have a follow up question for you Steph just before we get into your weird Billy Bob Thornton fetish did you watch The Outsider the Stephen King adaptation which stars Jason Bateman do you know what I did not watch that well we've just proved your entire line you proved me completely wrong you sit upon a throne of lies I do hold on I'm going to have to look that up now I really liked it it's an interesting show but all I'm saying is he plays the main character of that Terry Maitland and suffice it to say it's a different take on Jason Bateman.
23That's what I'm going to say. You will see his Batemanosity takes a turn in this one. Oh really? I'm just going to say that and leave it there. There's a couple of things he's not so Batemanish in. There's the recent film he was in with Taron Egerton, that one in the airport and the plane and all that. Oh I really like that. Yeah. Yeah, it was good and he wasn't Bateman-like particularly in that. He was quite different. but don't no he was no I I just think his voice is so distinct his voice is yes he can't help but be Jason Bateman I don't know no no what I'm talking about is like the inflections that he uses like he that you know it's a strong point I'm just saying right are you it's it's carry on is the film you're referring to by the way yes I love his podcast his podcast is amazing yeah He's very, very Bateman-esque in terms of his, yeah, the way he speaks on the podcast.
23That's like peak Bateman, isn't it? But I think in contrast, in Carry On, not to be confused with Carry On Up the Khyber, et cetera, he was just different. He can do character. He can do characters who are - No, I'm not saying he can't, but to me, maybe I just see through all that. I'm just saying, like, we have a connection. Okay. Well, watch the outsider and see if your connection persists. why is my Billy Bob Thornton controversial it's just an odd choice yeah I think he's been in I think he can be quite irritating is my take on him okay give me an example of when he's irritating Slingblade which?
02no Slingblade Slingblade Slingblade he's saying he's not irritating Fargo Goliath oh my god he's so good in the first season of Fargo yeah he's so good in Goliath Goliath is Goliath doesn't get talked about enough Goliath is amazing. We reviewed the first season of Goliath, as I recall. You didn't watch the rest. You didn't watch the other seasons of Goliath? No. Well, you should definitely do that. It's amazing. I put it to you that you will find it difficult to find something that Billy Bob Thornton's in that he's not good in. Cue someone writing in with a list of Billy Bob Thornton films they hate.
39Oh, I'm sure they will, without a doubt. I mean, yeah, it's a lot to say. He does so much. He never takes a day off. seemingly. He's in a lot. I was a bit annoyed by him in Bad Santa 2. What? Yeah, I mean, it was no Bad Santa 1, that's true. Well, no, but still. Both Bad Santa 1 and 2, yeah. Bad Santa 1 is a fantastic film. Okay, yeah. Is it a fantastic alternative Christmas film? I mean, it's no L, but... We've already discussed Carry On, which is clearly a definitive Christmas film. Okay, go on, you two, give yours. Go on, hit me with it. Mine's really controversial, but I'm going to say it anyway.
17It's Woody Allen, isn't it? It's Woody Allen, yeah, of course. Of course it is. I was brought up on Woody Allen. I know, forget about the controversies, et cetera, but my whole entire worldview and comedy and sense of humour and appreciation for comedy is kind of down to Woody Allen. So, yeah, it's a true answer. I think it's okay, Boyd. I think it's okay. To you. i'm thinking james is going to cut it out no not at all not at all okay free boyd's massive woody stays in the cart that's not that's not coming out uh i don't know i don't know that so i certainly don't have someone who i will enjoy everything they do absolutely not not at all uh i definitely have people who i'll watch it if they're in it and schwarzenegger was definitely that person to a point uh less so now sadly but uh but there was definitely part where i'd watch anything that Arnold was in.
14I will watch most things that one or all of the Hollywood Chrises are in. I think the Chrises are fairly bankable, you know, be it Evans, Hemsworth, Pine, Pratt, any of the above. I will pretty much watch it if they're in it. I think they're all pretty reliable. I can't believe you've grouped this question to get a really fantastic answer. I'm very jealous. Yeah, the Chrises. Okay. I'm saying if one or all I mean God can you imagine if they were all in it but yeah if one or all of the Chrises are in a film I think it's worth watching that's a bit mad what about TV though if they're in a TV show I'll watch that as well but in terms of like people like a TV actor is there a TV actor that you watch yeah one that you'll watch everything is that your way of pointing out Steph is that your way of pointing out we've given film based answers yes it is yes absolutely is whereas I gave two TV based answers they've done tv shows defending jacob had a chris in it parks and rec i'll give you yeah i'll give you that but i think you need to i think you need to both decide on a tv actor and let's be honest actually we've all we've all chosen men so we probably need to have some women i'll tell you whose tv stuff i really like and i think he's a brilliant um career kind of development for her is nicole kidman nicole kidman has been in a seemingly endless series of wacko thrillers, you know, streaming service thrillers and you know, kind of far-fetched dramas and she's always having a good time in them.
47You know, and I really enjoy her whole embrace of that kind of slightly kitsch, slightly ridiculous genre of, you know, the one she was in with Hugh Graham, what was that called? That was really good and she's just done most of the movie. It was one of those shows with an incredibly generic title, unfortunately. so that's gone I can't remember that at all she's been in loads of things with generic titles but turned out to be incredibly watchable and often down to her being very entertaining I tell you who I'm going to throw in there another Australian Toni Collette she doesn't make anything bad she doesn't make anything bad yeah she's always been watching yeah that's true okay let's move on there's one here called Steph Was Right let's not read that one

30can you just send it to me afterwards that one was from paul but it's kind of cheating because paul again and about four other people and we get this every week and it's always along the same lines uh and there's another one here from kobe uh friend is it about widow's bay yeah it is kobe's okay kobe's quite pointed so we might as well just read some of this uh he has said yes it's brilliant yes thank you kobe we know delightfully hilarious yes all right sometimes probably scary sure one of the most original shows all right whatever i cannot imagine nine better new show all right calm down uh anyway anyway anyway kobe goes on to say not only is it brilliant and boyd and i are wrong although i guess it's just me that's wrong now since boyd has not one of his classic catented reverse ferrets yes he did and i was and it was wonderful and i i applauded you for going back and watching it and get having the correct decision well done you well kobe has said that if any of the following shows are your bag there is a strong chance you'll fall hard for widow's bay so he's saying you'll like widow's bay if you like one or all of parks and recreation yes what we do in the shadows yes jaws yes yes midnight mass yes absolutely anything stephen king yeah yeah twin peaks and wait for it The Chair Company now I mean Kobe for what for is there industrial level cringe in here that I'm not aware of is that the Chair Company legacy oh well then this explains why I don't want to go back to it yeah but Jaws and Midnight Mass is very much a kind of mash up of the and Parks and Rec yeah yeah oh that's a great list where he goes into the sea isn't there to show to show what is it he's trying to prove that this the mist isn't it It's all fine.
21Yeah. And that is one of my favourite scenes, actually, because it's a bit Jaws, and it's a bit like half of those other things all at the same time. It's really fun. And it is fun, and it's cringe as well, because he's like literally running to the sea and then has to run her back out again, because he's so distressed. Yeah, that almost sums up the appeal of the show, actually, that sequence. I noticed another show using the, what is the thing called from Jaws when, you know, the close-up? The crash zoom. The crash zoom, yes. there's a lot of crash zoom in a show i watched just recently and i can't remember what it is that's i don't i mean you can take that out hopefully i'll remember no no we'll leave your crash zoom in there boydy uh right let's move on to rachel who has uh used the subject matter my favorite boydism uh and rachel says my favorite boydism has to be the perfectly time steady at any possible moment of innuendo i love the carry on vibes and we've had a bit of that today so yes although it was less innuendo than just flat out sex talk but that's fine uh rachel would also like to mention how much she loved deadlock series two as we didn't get the chance to review it and she says it's absolutely crazy and really amps up the aussie fun and wild characters do you remember deadlock yeah yeah it was pretty good yeah yeah well apparently season season two is a banger interesting uh thank you for that rachel uh tom Tom says, hi team.
44I've been a loyal listener since the beginning. Thanks for the work you do. I'm watching season three of Shrinking at the moment. I wholeheartedly agree with Kate and Steph that it is amazing. Arguably Apple TV's best show. Oh, Tom, and you were doing so well. No, you're right, Tom. Keep going. It's no see. Anyway, anyway, anyway. Tom says, I found myself doing the thing I always do when I enjoy a show. I won't allow myself to watch more than one episode per day. sometimes even two days i can't stand the thought of running out and one having to wait another year or longer or two feeling bereft because i know there isn't going to be another season is this something you have ever done or felt come to think of it i treat your podcast the same way i always make sure to have at least one episode or part of it left because i'd hate to ever run out oh i love this kind of delayed gratification of a an episode yet do you know what do you know what I totally get that and I you know as is you know we obviously Kay and I both love shrinking but you know what Kay and I do and I think that that's the reason we do it is because we've finished season we finished season three of shrinking we both we send each other um basic interviews from people in shrinking like literally every other day to kind of keep the magic alive so like and there's and there's there's absolutely reams and reams of different interviews with all the different shrinking people and all the little clipped up memeable parts.
13So you can get another hit. Just go onto Instagram, put in shrinking and you'll get a load of stuff that will help you through the winter is what I'd say. But you never keep one in the chamber as it were. Yeah, that's different from actually deliberately not watching. Well, I can't now because I've watched them all. No, I can't do it. I have zero self-control. I have absolutely no self-control I desperately need to get to the end of it if something's too stressful I need to get to the end of it and if something is too joyful I need to get to the end of it I can't delay if I've got episodes to watch and I really want to watch I cannot delay it it's very impressive though it is impressive there are people I've spoken to about this where they really love a show I remember someone writing and saying they love the West Wing but they've never seen the final season and the reason why I've never watched it is because they didn't want to live in a world where they'd seen all of the West Wing so they just didn't watch the final season of it so that there'd always be more to watch if they needed it do you know what i mean so then when they're gonna get around to it i don't know i don't know deathbed now yeah it could be it could be i don't i mean i've never i've never had that because i'm like you could always watch it again um yeah just do a re-watch and then the the great thing about re-watches though as well is is you if you live like me you watch things at great speed because you want to get to the end of it and you have to know what happens, then when you do a re-watch, you notice things that you didn't see the first time around.
37So it's like a different level of pleasure. I think the first time you watch something, you're watching it. If you're me, you're kind of watching it because you need to know the answers to certain things. And the next time you watch it, you can relax a little bit and you can enjoy it a little bit more. So I would say that is also an option. Go at speed and then go for the enjoyment second time around. a little yeah a second more detailed watch yeah i've never i've never knowingly held stuff back for that reason because i'm a little bit instant gratification the only thing that i do or and do you know i don't even think i even do that because uh a show that i was watching recently where we'd been given all the episodes except the final two and i was just like i'm not going to do it i'm not going to do it the reason why i'm not going to do it is because they've not given me all of them and the finale doesn't air until i think it's literally october and so i was just like this i I can't because I'll have forgotten everything that's happened, but I couldn't help myself.
27And I did it anyway. And I know I'm going to regret it, but I did it anyway. So I'm the opposite of Tom. No, I know a lot of people who are like, unless they're dropping everything, they're not going to start it because they don't want to start something that they know they can't finish. Do you know what I mean? So if they're like... Yeah, that's quite common, yeah. Yeah, or they'll do that thing where they only buy the subscription, you know, when they know everything's dropped so they can watch it all. Sometimes for financial reasons, but sometimes I think it is that sense because there is a singular pleasure, I think, in binging through an entire show.
54And it's wonderful. And if you can do it, that's great. The Boys I've been watching week by week. Someone's got to. Wow. I really like The Boys. I enjoy it. But we'll talk about that being the main show when it finishes. I haven't had time to watch this new season. Yeah. I know there's one thing you do do that I do, I think, that we have in common, James. Oh, God. What is it? That we might delay gratification for. is I like to have stuff to watch on a plane flight that I've stacked up. So I might hold off watching an entire series so that I can watch it on a flight. I'm sure you do the same, James.
29Oh my God. I have done that. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry, you two. So you're just, what you're saying is you reserve series that no one else can watch so you can then watch them in your first class plane flights to somewhere free. First class, I'm very much in economy. I'm not saying, hold on. I'm not saying I'm doing it to lord it over anyone. I'm just doing it to give myself a maximum pleasure guaranteed flight. Oh, nice. It's so that mid-flight he can lean over to like Jerry Hall and give her a nudge. Jerry Hall. Look what I'm watching. Look what I'm watching on the screen. All the people that would be on Boyd's flight.
02Why Jerry Hall? Because I figured if Boyd sat next to a famous person on a plane, it's almost certainly going to be someone like Jerry Hall. That's just in my head. The only famous person I've ever seen on a flight, and this is true, is Ross Kemp. Really? Yeah. Ross Webb was on a flight back from New York. And it was hilarious. Yeah, he was fun. The very first time that I flew business class, I was sitting next to Patrick Stewart. That is the very first time. Are you actually joking? You must have thought you were in an alternate universe when all of your dreams come true. So it's the very first time because I just moved over from the website to the magazine.
34I was going on a set visit for Joss Whedon's Serenity. And they were flying me Virgin Upper Class. So I was in my little pod. And in my life, I had never been out. I'd never been in premium economy at that point. And I was sitting in this pod, and I was like, oh my God, this is amazing. And then someone was putting their bag in the overhead locker, and they jostled me quite a lot. And I kind of like, I didn't give him a look exactly, although I might have done a little bit. And I looked across and it was Patrick Stewart. And then he just proceeded to sit down in the pod next to me. I'm like, oh my God, it's Captain Picard!
02You must have held yourself back from accosting him. It was extraordinary. It was an extraordinary experience. Oh, so you've flown up a class as well. The mistake you made is, when you fly up a class, And that's what started my whole thing, is you get points, a lot of points for that, and then you have to keep accruing. It has to be said, it took me more years than I really should have before I cottoned on to that, that you can get air miles per day. I never even crossed my mind. Of course, that's how it was done. Oh my God. Well, for all the people like me who are flying EasyJet, then, you know, and not only do they think they have screens.
35I am flying EasyJet to Budapest for the Champions League final. Oh, how good of you. How good of you. That is very good of you, Poydie. Have you charted the whole flight? for just yourself? Is that how it works? No, I'm hoping there's going to be some like star arsenal related people on the flight, but who knows? Oh my God. Okay, well you're flying easy, Jet. You're a true working class hero. Thanks so much. Yes, you are. Am I still working class if I go easy boarding? Or whatever it's called. No, no, you're not. Speedy boarding. No, you're not. Oh my God. Right. Okay. Right. Okay. I will end this by saying that Tom at the end of his message about his, let's be honest, slightly sociopathic watching habits.
15He mentioned that a PS, he had a PS. And his PS was, I do have to agree with the listener who asked if Boyd was responsible for the old postbag intro. The new one also kind of sounds like him, but only when he's either enthusiastic or disagreeing with someone. Let's be honest, it's mostly James. I don't know what the new, what the thing is. That's because you haven't listened to the podcast. No. This is Darren's intro to the postbag. And he did one for Miss K versus the postbag. and then the new triage post bag has its own intro and a little jingle, there's a little song. It does sound a bit like you actually, Boyd.
48What does this person say? It goes, triage. It's the best bag. Yes, that is Darren. That is our editor, Darren. Can I just say, I fully support Tom. I think Tom's viewing choices, just to go back to that, I think that that shows a lot of emotional strength and courage to have something in the bag that you know is going to keep you happy. I'm with you Tom I'm not gonna start I might gonna I might gonna start doing that I wish I had the emotional fortitude to do that but I don't think I do be more Tom is what I say be more Tom we should all be more Tom and what better place to end this particular episode of Pilot Plus as ever thank you so much for subscribing it's very much appreciated and you know keeps us all in employment that post let's talk about the post bag for a second so the old email address pilottv at empiremagazine.com is the one I've been pushing that is one that you can of course still use i have been informed that postbag at pilot tv pod.com should now be working properly apparently with some kind of domain resolution issue don't really know what that means but it should be working but obviously if you get bounce backs then do go back to the old address but otherwise postbag at pilot tv pod.com please just send us your thoughts your feelings your fears your hopes your dreams all of that stuff that would be great we'll be back in your ears on monday when we will be reviewing dear england on the beebs spider noir as well uh which is on prime and the burrows on netflix exciting stuff uh we'll also have joseph fines on the show with jody whittaker talking dear england which i am i am vaguely aware is something to do with football but either way i'm sure it'd be fabulous we look forward to seeing you then pilot out

We’re exploring the wonderful world of cam-boys this week as Tatiana Maslany looks for love (or at least a little relief) online in new Apple TV show Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. Does it live up to the title? Well, that would be telling. Plus we explore everything from piecemeal watching habits (do YOU ever hold episodes back for a rainy day?) to the logic behind irregularly scheduled episode drops (far more interesting than it sounds, honestly).
