In short
Pilot Plus recap/review of The Morning Show season 4 (mostly episodes 1–9), set two years after the UBA/NBN merger. The studio faces Olympics and a presidential election, financial insecurity, and internal power struggles. The episode also discusses the show’s topical storylines (manosphere/influencers, AI, LA fires) and argues the season has become more melodramatic and clunky, with weaker construction and overextended supporting plots.
Guests (podcast hosts)
Kay, James, and Boyd (co-hosts). They debate character arcs and writing quality; Kay has seen 9/10 episodes, James and Boyd similarly.
Key claims
Alex’s Olympic deal is jeopardized by a political misstep; Stella becomes CEO; Jennifer Anderson’s character gains a board seat but may have to make room for someone returning. Reese Witherspoon is confirmed present (not yet on-screen in episode 1). Standouts include Karen Pittman (Mia) and Greta Lee (Estella). Criticisms target Jeremy Irons’ clunky, cliche professor/parent role, Billy Crudup’s “busy work,” and Corey’s sidelined LA film subplot.
Notable examples
Manosphere talk/influencer storyline; AI and LA fires; car chase in episode 1; Jeremy Irons’ awkward scenes with Jennifer; Corey’s Hollywood film satire moment with a list of top female stars.

You remember that my close personal friend Jennifer Anderson sent me many, many months before Boyd was allowed to see it. But look, look, it's not a competition that I would win. It's not a competition and Boyd has now seen it. So, without further ado, let's ask Kay to tell us all about it. Why are you so mean to him? Okay, so this, as James says, is the fourth season, which, have you seen it in its entirety? No, they have made all but the finale available, so I've seen nine of the ten episodes.
0:43Kay Ribeiro:Do you know why? They know you'd be unbearable. Yeah, I think that is it. I've got access to the finale. Lies. Lies. Have you? Lies. I can tell he's lying. So bloody childish. Can you though? It's a little bit of you. You're not sure. There's a little part of me that bothers me. You're not 100 % sure. Could they have? might they have did they give him the finale I will say I do not enjoy this new Apple thing where they give you all the episodes but the last one it's quite upsetting they did that with something really foundation yes very important they haven't done it with slow horses no they didn't they gave us all the slow horses they trust us with that did they do it with smoke I can't remember they might have done it I watched it after you guys I don't think so no I think we had the finale of smoke anyway anyway anyway we've seen all but the last one Kay tell us about it Yes, I've only seen the first episode because I am, you know, like to just...
1:33Slow my horse. Yeah, I've been watching slow horses. That's what's been taking up my time. Anyways, this is two years on after the merger of UBA and NBN. And they're facing a big year because they have both the Olympics and they have the presidential election. So it's all going on, a lot rides in it. You know, they are facing financial insecurity as they always are. Corey and Bradley no longer on the scene. the black sheep, you know, they've gone. So we see that Corey is in LA making, oh my God, I love Corey, by the way. He's one of my favorite characters.
2:05Kay Ribeiro:Corey making a budget version of the studio, but yes. Yeah, and he is stressed out, classic Corey, because the LA fires, well, they're on the horizon, but actually it's a writer's strike and so he's dealing with all that. As always, this morning, very topical. And Bradley is languishing in West Virginia where she's teaching and she clearly is bored out of her brains. But you can't keep a good reporter down, So let's just say, you know, she might not be in West Virginia for long. Meanwhile, back in the studio, Alex is, she's helming the main show, isn't she? With the lady's name, I can't remember now, her co-anchor.
2:39They're preparing for the Olympic coverage. So they've got this massive lucrative deal for the Olympics, which Alex scuppers or potentially scuppers because of a, shall we say, a political misstep. A real big clanger, a doozy. and she's in big trouble because, like I said, it jeopardises everything and there's a lot riding on this deal. Stella freaks out, who's now CEO. Board president Celine, also played by Marianne Cotillard. Now, was she in last series? I can't remember.
3:07Kay Ribeiro:No, I love it when they do this. She's someone who's been there all along because she's head of the board except we've never heard of or seen her before. She's just fallen out of the sky, but sure, why not? Yeah, she's a new face on the scene. Mia, however, is not and she's also stressing out about this whole operation. James has just blinded us with some lights that have gone on. He said, let there be lights, and there was. That's it. Anyway, it's back on. I mean, it was always, you know, good. This still remains high quality. I really just love the fact that they deal with the issues of the day.
3:39So in this first episode, I mean, they don't do it subtly, but they deal with the Manosphere in this first episode. We've got AI and the LA fires, as mentioned. So they are, you know, shooting with live ammo, as always. and I particularly like the fact that they are exploring, once again, the power dynamics. So it's interesting that Alex now has, Jennifer Anderson's character, now has a place at the table, the board table, which she's fought so hard for. But the dilemma is going to be, will she potentially make room for someone to come back?
4:10Kay Ribeiro:I think it's fairly safe to say that, yes, Reese Witherspoon is very much in this series. She's in this series, but is she back? Yes, she's back. She's in the trailer. She's on the poster. she's back in the series but is she back on the sofa to be fair it's 25 minutes before she arrives in the opening episode I can time it oh okay but yeah it's not a spoiler put it that way it would be a major spoiler if she wasn't in it that would be yeah that would be that would be terrible likewise if Corey wasn't in it personally for me so yeah it's as addictive and compelling as ever is it though I think so yeah I don't think it is really yes why I've enjoyed it enormously but I think this I think they're following the kind of Star Trek lore at the moment where good season, bad season, good season, bad season, a little bit.
4:54Kay Ribeiro:Or you could just look at it a little bit in the way that it's just the laws of diminishing returns because this, for me, is a show that began as something not serious. It's always been a little bit silly, but obviously the first season, which was very Me Too and it was about sexual abuse within the entertainment industry, was quite pointed. And I think it dealt with some weighty themes and it dealt with them sometimes in quite weighty ways. And it's got progressively closer to And Just Like That with every season that's gone past. Oh, no, James. And then last season, they literally fired Reese Witherspoon into space, which I think was arguably the silliest it's ever been.
5:26Kay Ribeiro:Yeah, I mean... This season, though, it's... I mean, it's a soap opera, isn't it? It really is. It's just wall-to-wall melodrama. Yes, and I think that is the key. And I think comparing it to And Just Like That is a crime. I think for a lot of people, this might end up being a hate watch. It isn't for me. I genuinely do enjoy it. But I do think this season is the silliest and also, I think, the least well-constructed. Okay, well, you've seen how many you've seen it all but the finale okay fine I'm basing my review on it which is fair yeah because it's all promise where you are it's all promise unfortunately the promises I don't personally think get delivered I think some of the storylines are we I think Julianna Margulies it's a shame she's not back I really liked her character there's some good new people in here Aaron Pierre is in it as Celine's partner he's basically a sex object he's so objectified yeah it really is he's just there to have his pecs out all the time it's extraordinary about bloody time yeah you know you've got who else Jeremy Irons turns up as Jennifer Allison's father.
6:20Kay Ribeiro:I have issues with Jeremy. Oh, really? As well you should be. He's a massive tool and you get into a little bit of her childhood and background, but it is so clumsily done. It just clangs like an anvil falling on your head. There's no subtlety, there's no kind of deftness to it. It really is. And there are a lot of bits like this. Corey, now, Corey. Don't come for Corey. I'm sorry. Billy Crudup, who was at one point the best thing in this show. He's just outlived his usefulness. Put him out to pasture. Put a bullet in his head. I'm sorry. That character needs to go. James, take it back. They've got nothing to do with him.
6:55Kay Ribeiro:They're inventing things for him to do. And at this point, it's just like, it's some of the scenes here. I'm just like, I cannot believe I'm watching this busy work. There's a scene. I think it's in episode one where Billy Crudup is talking to Will Arnett. Will Arnett's character who pops up intermittently as a big Hollywood kind of agent, I think he is. and he's chattering away Billy Crudup in his way and Will Arnett just suddenly turns to him and says can you just shut the fuck up and I thought this speaks for everyone watching except Kate who weirdly holds a candle for this insufferable twat of a character I'm not being funny I've got form for it I know I hate you I know fair enough dealing with you two yeah I met a listener last night actually the Sky Arts Awards who listens to both this podcast and the, as we call it, main podcast.
7:51And she's called Jess, I believe. And she said she particularly feels sorry for you having to put up with us. That's fair. Thank you. What's her name? Jess.
7:58Kay Ribeiro:We think, is that a Jess or Tess? We're not entirely sure. Right. Jess, Tess. Can I say thank you very much? And I'm forming a support group and you can come along. Anyway, that's in brackets. But he is insufferable, a pretty good character. And I hate to agree with James. I really do you know I hate to agree with him but he's right because he's been shuffled off he's shuffled off to Hollywood making some stupidly titled film which would never happen and it's totally sub-studio because I'm sorry we've seen the studio now we know how to make a satire on Hollywood is that what he's doing? so from the first episode you don't know right?
8:35he's just I don't think he was given the context yeah that's what he's doing and he starples out of the film and he has to try it there's a funny moment where he's got a list of all the top, you know, Julia Roberts and all the top females. That's a good one, yeah. Right. But there's just no reason to have him in the show anymore. And it's weird because loads of shows, you know, lose supporting characters in the middle of their run. Anything that goes on for three, four, five seasons. You just saw characters go by the wayside and you think... And his story was kind of resolved at the end of the previous season.
9:05I mean, he was disgraced. He's been cancelled. He should have been cancelled by the show, but he's not. He's still out there being an annoying twat with nothing to do apart from trying to make this fucking film that we don't care about. Anyway, it's totally misguided that he's studying the show. And that's one of... And I keep hating to agree with James, but he's right as well. So how many episodes have you seen? I've seen the same number as James. Okay, and do you share the opinion that this has gone off the board? 100%. Oh, no. And I kept watching it. So it is kind of addictive. It's enjoyable.
9:37It is.
9:38Kay Ribeiro:But we've both watched nine hours of it. Right. Because the milieu is intrinsic, particularly for me, I love this stuff. Like Broadcast News, I'm sure I said this when we reviewed it, it is one of my favourite films. It's a gem. But the whole, you know, depicting the world of American TV itself with these huge stars, incredible car, is intrinsically my thing. And so I'm bound to like it. But it has become so soapy, to use that word, in a pejorative, but in the sense that it's not, actually, you know, there's more depth to an episode of EastEnders or Corey probably than half of this half of this series and it's so clunky the Jeremy Irons character is awful it's such a cliche and he looks down on his daughter because she's a mainstream you know American celebrity news anchor and he's a big journalist professor it's fucking cliche I think he's a law professor he's a law professor whatever and he's also by the way I feel like that's something James would do maybe he's got a terrible accent he's got a terrible accent it's like awful terrible accents tick Don't be.
10:43Don't want to leave. No, we got an email about that saying they were going to cancel their subscription if you kept on doing it. Wow, well, we'll get to that. Was it from Donald Gleeson? Yeah, it was from him. Yeah, fair enough. The family. The scenes between him and Jennifer Fass are excruciating. They're so clichéd. It's just awful. And is he throughout? Intermittently. The thing is, there are so many storylines in this that main characters will disappear for ever since. I was going to say that. This is my main complaint about it. In the glory days, when this show started, it was about these two and their complex interrelationships and their egos and their competing egos and they kind of bring them back together in a really forced way after what happened at the end of the previous season and their tete-a-tetes now are so...
11:29Wait a minute, wait a minute is it forced? Yeah, believe me she's on a saviour mission remember the scene in the opening episode where the FBI guy because she had this deal because of what she did with her brother etc she basically did all this stuff that was breaking the law so this FBI guy goes to visit her by the way have you seen the Paul Thomas Anderson film I've seen it tonight watch out for him that actor did you hear that you've watched it before him I know I've seen it twice that actor is brilliant in the PTF look out for him anyway and listeners anyway he goes to see her and basically he says if you see stuff that happens when you're back doing your job you've got to let us know the FBI know it's so like that wouldn't happen it's ridiculous I agree with it absolutely ridiculous.
12:13And then she does, of course, go back and she has a really awkward and badly written scene with Jennifer. It's just somehow this propulsively fun show when it starts. Remember how incredible the opening was of the first season with Steve Carell's character? It's now, it tries to be propulsive at the beginning of the season, does it, with the whole Olympic person, which is the very first sequence as far as I can remember. The Iranian athlete. Right. But it just doesn't quite hang together anymore. And you're right. And that was the point you made about, it was all about the core two, the two characters, these brilliant actresses playing really interesting characters in there.
12:48But now, they're trying to make all the supporting characters as important as those two.
12:53Kay Ribeiro:And they're just not. They're not as interesting. I'm sorry. I give so few fucks about Yanko's engagement, I can't even begin to tell you. They spent so much time on that. And you can imagine, they've all sat there going, well, we're on the fourth season now. We can't still be about Jennifer Anderson and Rita Witherspoon. We have to have all these other people. Aaron Pierre's characters, you know, all of these other people who say he's just suddenly arriving to do stuff. It's like, they're not interested. It's a real disappointment. Would you like it to end? Oh, they've just renewed it, haven't they?
13:21Kay Ribeiro:They have renewed it. I mean, I kind of like, I think they just need... Oh, I'll watch more. Yeah, they just need to work out what made it brilliant in the first place. Strip it back. It was so good to start with and they just need to remember that and just refocus it, I think. It's savable. It's salvageable. It's salvageable. It's a Star Trek thing. It's an odds and evens thing. odd season's good even season's bad that's basically what it is I don't watch these Star Trek shows but if you say so it's definitely a Star Trek thing but I think that's coincidence isn't it that you know they're not deliberately the creators of the show have gone let's have a done season guys we're on a shit season now it's done season let's all come up with these characters we don't care about but it is I'm really and I really wanted to love it and I kept watching it like because I just wanted to get to the point where it's going to be really dramatic maybe the finale the finales usually are great actually they are usually very good no matter what You guys hated the COVID season.
14:11I liked that season. Yeah, that was weak. It was bonkers. That was more fun than this season, really. Yeah, it was. Because it was so mad. And quite focused. It was quite focused for all his madness. Yeah, because he was just living in that Italian... I loved that.
14:24Kay Ribeiro:The car cracker. Oh, not the car cracker. No, but I loved it when he was living in that house. It was absolutely mad. Wasn't it that Italian woman coming over? Yeah, yeah. It was very, very strange. But the thing is, there are good parts. Like Justin Marks, not Justin Marks. he's the showrunner of Shogun Jon Hamm as Paul Marx Jon Hamm is back he's not used a lot but I like him when he's in it yeah Hammo's back and I enjoyed that yeah his characters are always interesting even though actually you've seen a million billionaire million billionaire characters a bajillion but he's I think he's an interesting one he's on a bit of a redemption arc and then you've got Boyd Holbrook and this is not on the nose at all Bro Hartman and Bro is a kind of Manosphere talk show influencer in the same vein as Joe Rogan and that's a very again a very very unsubtle storyline that takes place.
15:09Kay Ribeiro:I think, of all of this, I think the standouts for me in this season have probably been Karen Pittman, who plays Mia, the producer. Oh, she's always good. She's really good in this. And then Greta Lee, Estella, who's really, really great in this. Yeah, she's good. And all her stuff in it is really fun as well. But the stuff that you're supposed to care about, especially the Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon stuff, I think that's the weakest stuff. Also, Reese Witherspoon's character, I don't know who she is anymore. Like, she began this as this kind of, you know, neophyte reporter, firebrand, you know, on the streets, sort of friendly to the right person from kind of like a...
15:44Kay Ribeiro:I think it meant friendly to the right. I was like, she was never friendly to the right. But the whole point is she was played to a right-wing audience. That's why they brought her on. And now I don't know who she is. I don't know what her character is anymore. Like, it seems that she's become incredibly kind of watered down at this point because they don't really know what to do with her. And so I kind of, I found that quite disappointing. But yeah, like Boyd said, it's not good, but I enjoyed it. of it hasn't she so she's herself you know as the character she's had the personality kicked out of us but her yeah her dialogue is not great have they had to change writers do we know I think same showrunner but from a writing point of view I haven't looked at the individual I'm sure there's a kind of show American show where there's a writer's room and they all you can imagine them all sitting there going we have to come up with the storyline for Corey's character you know and them going just get rid justice for Corey but I haven't yeah I do take your point that perhaps he is now surplus requirement I just love him as a character you know what's the big problem with it I could go on about this all night and I won't but the problem with his character is his bonkers kind of over the topness because you know when he's being the boss of Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston it works because he's running around as a manic kind of head of the but when he's just out there in LA making a film it's just a different vibe and he's still got that energy it feels weird but those people exist where they lose power yet they don't realise they have and they're still trying to be and operate how they used to but also there's a subplot involving Lindsay Duncan's character who's like his his mother his mother Martha Martha your mother's Martha too another excellent Batman we met her in a mad scene in season 3 but there's a whole thing and I'm like I don't know why I'm watching this or why I'm supposed to care please move on and I just yeah but look It's not a good season.
17:32Kay Ribeiro:It's not even at this point. It's a mess is what it is. But there is something about this where it is quite watchable and part of that is the setting. Part of that is just it's got great people in there and it's got lovely production values. But it's very watchable. I watched nine hours. I've got no regrets whatsoever. I'll definitely watch more of it. The production values is true but even the... I feel that the original first couple of seasons were much more cinematic than this one. It almost feels the way it's shot now. It feels very rote and kind of, you know, they haven't really put enough imaginational energy into the way it's made now.
18:02There is a car chase in the first episode. There is a car chase. Yeah, I'd say that opening is fun. Yeah, that's a good... But then it... That's the problem with that, actually. It's got quite a frenetic opening, cinematic opening with the car chase and everything. Then it really settles down into quite a blandingly filmed... It can't all be car chases, boys. No, I know, but it used to... I feel like it used to have more creativity. Okay, listen, you've given it a good kick and we know what you both feel. Yeah, I feel like it's too much of a kicking than I really intended, but once I got going...
18:26You're still not holding back, though. No. I would say, for the record, that it is not as bad as... And just like that. But you're right. But I know what James means, though. It's an interesting comparison, yeah. There's a Venn diagram, and let's just say there's some overlap. Yeah, there is some overlap, yeah. I think some people will hate watch it, yeah. I mean, you know, but it is... And yeah, it is fun enough to be... Yeah, it's addictive. Like, there was no question that I wasn't going to carry on watching this. Never even crossed my mind, and I can't wait to see the finale. That has to be taken into account.
18:59So they've still done a good job of making it incredibly compelling. They just care about the ratings. They don't care how many people are watching because they, inverted commas, hate watching it, you know? I don't think they even do care about the ratings because Apple TV Plus doesn't give a shit about ratings. Oh, yeah, of course. Yeah, so even then. Five's already been greenlit, so fuck it.
19:14Kay Ribeiro:Yeah, exactly. Fuck it, says Kay. But yes, newsrooms are great, but I'd say just watch the newsroom. Anyway, anyway, the morning show, which is on Apple TV Plus, I'm going to say now? Yes, today, 17th of September, as we speak. It has been unleashed as we speak. Can I just say, actually, someone got in touch with me last night on social media to say they're so delighted that we recommended the Newsreader because they're loving it. Another good newsroom show. Yeah, love a good newsroom. It is time now for the Postbag. Ladies and gentlemen, it's Miss Kay versus the Postbag.
20:02Okay, we've got a bumper postbag. I've been like, I've upturned the postbag and everything's come out from the corners. So we start with a message from Gary, who says...
20:11Kay Ribeiro:Hi, Gary. Hi, Gaz. Probably hates being called Gaz. Gaz. Gaz. El Gazarino. I always get over-familiar. Sorry, Gary. He says, hi. Sorry, can never remember how to contact the show properly. properly it's in it's in the description you made me put it there okay wait we've got a few messages about that oh god uh just wanting to oh god this is getting stuck in my throat just wanted to agree with james i like him already my email actually autocorrected that sentence first time about the pit i travel from brisbane to portland then to london via chicago with united who also have the full series i finished it with 10 minutes to spare coming into heathrow and is absolutely excellent but Jesus it's gory.
20:52It absolutely has to come to the UK somehow. It's great to see Dr Carter from ER all grown up and I hope James got to see the whole lot on his way back. Love the pod. Gary.
21:02Kay Ribeiro:Well there's a whole thing going on about the pit at the moment. Have you seen this? No. The lawsuit that's happening? What? So they're being sued by Michael Crichton's estate because apparently apparently heavily it is alleged that this began life as an ER reboot. And it was going to be Dr. Carter returning. And it was going to be like a 12-hour shift in real time, like 24, which becomes a 14-hour shift. So it's 14 episodes. And it was all going to be around Dr. Carter. Apparently, that is what they are alleging. She then apparently demanded, I say she, it's the person who's kind of in charge of the Michael Crichton estate.
21:36Kay Ribeiro:I don't know if she's his daughter, granddaughter, I'm not sure. But she apparently demanded creative control and many millions of dollars. Yeah. To which they responded, get fucked, we'll call it the bit and do something else. And that is the situation. Now, I don't know whether it did start life as an ER thing, though having read the quotes in the article, it certainly, from what Noah Wiley said, it does seem like he said that it was going to be a collaboration. So it certainly feels like there were conversations about that before they pivoted to the pit. So now it's going to court as to whether or not they just re-skinned it.
22:07Kay Ribeiro:And is that a problem? Because my whole thing is, if they're suing the pit, why aren't you suing Grey's Anatomy? Why aren't you suing about 15 of Dick Wolf's shows? Because you can't own everything. single show that's in a hospital. And yes, of course, even if it started as one thing. No, but if there's a character that came from a show... Well, no, so the character's been completely changed. You still know a Wiley in it. Yeah, but that was the original, they're saying that's the original... They're poigness. Yeah. But surely you can just do that. Like, if as long as you change the characters and the setting and everything, I guess it doesn't really matter.
22:36Kay Ribeiro:I guess we'll find out, depending on how the corkhead goes. There's going to be a rival podcast that starts up that's called Poo Lock, and it'll have different characters on it, and it'll be like, yeah, they're going to talk about shit TV. And then see if it bothers me. Yeah, I see what you're saying. But yeah, good point. Well, listen, that is interesting. But what I want to know is, is that going to affect us bloody getting in the UK? Because that's the only thing I care about. Yeah, I mean, it's coming. The second season will be out soon. It'll be like Peacemaker. The second season will turn up.
Read the full transcript
23:01Kay Ribeiro:And Hacks happened with Hacks as well, didn't it? Where the second season is knocking on the door before you even get to see the first one. That raised Boyd's hackles, if you were a call. It's HBO Max shows. Surely you've got a friend over there. Get your Rolodex out. Friend where? Big shout out to HBO. Oh, right. If anyone from HBO is listening to this, and I happen to know they are, then please could you let us know when and where we might expect to see The Pit here in the UK so that those people on this podcast who are less fortunate than myself and have not been able to watch The Pit can see it.
23:31Please get in touch at pilotTV at empiremagazine.com.
23:34Kay Ribeiro:Please write in. It's a really, really good show. It's really, really, because it's naturally propulsive. Really, really, really good. Well, because literally it's almost like a 14-hour episode of television or a film, if you like. Because one episode, and then the next one just picks up where the last one ends. It keeps on coming on. It's great. It won big time at the Emmys. It did. We'll talk about that on the main podcast on Monday. It's not getting to the Emmys chat now, but yes. It'll make it really delayed. To be fair, I think it's safe to say there were no surprises at the Emmys, really?
24:07Kay Ribeiro:I think the bear just completely tanking. Now you're getting into it. You've just discussed it on Monday. Now you've literally... He stopped Boyd and his tracks. It was literally a pit stop. And then you made a provocative statement saying there were no surprises. I think there were one or two surprises. There were no surprises and you have to wait until Monday to hear more about it. Listen, I'm moving on. I'm moving on to Graham. Hi, Graham. Who says... Big grey. Oh, I love this. I like the way James is suddenly saying hello to the listeners. Yes, before he's just totally zoned up. But he's really connected today.
24:35I like this. Well, you're going to love it even more because this is about you as well. Hooray! Dear Kate, I know that at 71 I'm probably not the target audience for your show. Absolutely not, Graham. You are. Everyone. I thought you were going to say, absolutely not. Our target audience is very rude. No, he is. Everyone's right, yeah. Of course. From nine to 99. No, from younger... Don't you remember my... Seven to... My favourite, our youngest listener, Atticus, and his mum, Rachel. Don't you remember? She wrote in a few weeks ago. Look, they're looking at me blankly.
25:01Kay Ribeiro:No, no, it's the baby. Seven-week-year-old Atticus. She's probably eight weeks now. Big fan, loves The Expanse. Anyway, Graham says, I'm probably not the target audience for your show, but I'm a loyal fan and subscribe to Pilot Plus anyway. having recently cracked this new fangled email thingy I thought I'd write with a few points I want to get off my chest oh god yeah one anyone who has purchased a 4k TV and has not switched off motion smoothing should have it confiscated agreed two Boyd US comedies are generally unfunny like curb your enthusiasm so stop mentioning them week in week out I mean what can you say to that I'm sorry he mentioned Steve Martin as well so he's going for only fans I'm with him I'm with him so far only murders three lift the embargo and James talking about the West Wing absolutely not oh god who is this James Loving insane person it's another one of my burner accounts he says Boyd is right about smoke and James is spot on about Peacemaker oh okay thank you very much you occasionally say that you don't review second and third series of shows but we seem to get the likes of Only Murders and Doctor Who on constant loop no no just to address that we definitely do review multiple seasons of shows but we like new shows will generally take priority there's a weird formula we look at what's available in the week we sort of divide it by the embargo so that's the stuff that we can't cover and then it's like we'll try and prioritise very pilot and or new shows and then when there's fuck all else we'll do something on Channel 5 Isn't that fascinating?
26:23That's the kind of stuff you get on Pilot Plus right there the inner workings Binging is the only way an old fart like me can keep up with storylines weekly episodes make life far too difficult and then he goes you are lovely people delivering podcasts that are fun and interesting so keep it up I'll stop there because I really need to go for a pee old man, prostate what can I tell you
26:41Kay Ribeiro:too much information yours Graham P.S. oh my god I love this bit I was at the is it the Lowry last year was at the hotel the venue for the Empire Film Podcast Live and had the pleasure of meeting the team Helen kindly signed my copy of her brilliant book Women vs. Hollywood and if that wasn't enough James offered to take a picture of us and in doing so gifted me an up the nose selfie see a Tash what a guy right now I've copied and pasted these in right James Right, and finally, and then he said, finally, when are you coming up north? So this is the lovely picture of Graham, 71, with the lovely Helen O 'Hara.
27:17And then, and we'll have to put this on our socials, this gives me so much pleasure. Look at this picture of James looking supremely happy with himself. Oh, my God.
27:25Kay Ribeiro:Look at that. That is James' smug face writ large. I remember the Lowry, okay, yes, now I remember. Now I remember. I'd completely forgotten the name of the place. A little bit, yeah, I didn't want to beg any attention during that podcast. Yeah. Well, anyway, so thank you for taking that picture for Graham. And Graham, thank you for listening. And now that you've set the bar, I mean, my mission is to find out our oldest listener. So our current bid is 71. No, no, our current bid is one week away from 88 because my mum listens to this podcast. We can't count friends and family. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
27:57Because T's and C's. We've got an independent adjudicator, me. So if you are... Fine. Other than James's mum, if you are older than 71, please get in touch and let us know. Maybe that'll be my new ommeter that I don't actually do.
28:10Kay Ribeiro:Kay will bring you cake. If you're our oldest listener, she will come to your house and bring you cake. Yeah, I mean, to be fair, if you're 71 plus listening to the podcast, in fact, your mum deserves cake. Thank you. I'll pass that on. Craig asks, right, just listening to the Empire podcast and during a conjuring discussion, James says, Boydie, I'll let you off the hook. My question to Boyd is, did you wake up to hear your name spoken by James or had you already dropped into a deep sleep? thanks and come on your spurs Craig James I did initially what happens is I initially listen to it late at night and fall asleep to it and then I wake up in the morning but I do always listen in the end to the actual thing as well mostly certainly this time when James was banging on about Downton Abbey and how stupid I was to give it four stars and all this kind of stuff and as I said to him I kept explaining the Roger Ebert rule about how to review films to justify my four star review anyway I've never been mentioned so much ever in a podcast as to the amount of mentions he had for me in the Empire podcast.
29:07By hook or by crook, you will be on that bloody podcast, even if it is James mentioning you multiple times. I don't think Chris will have him on. But anyway, it was fun. It was, thankfully, because, and I only got, of course, James made it quite clear that the only reason I got to do those interviews with the Downton B. was because he was on a flyer. Oh, you swine, James. Coming back from wherever the fuck he was with his latest grotesque freebie junket thing that he was on about roller coasters in LA or something. So, yeah, even then I was humiliated. It was like a substitute for James. Craig says, wait.
29:34I don't care. He sent a follow-up message. He said, wait, and then Boyd is interviewing the Downton cast on the Empire podcast. The multiverse collides. Obviously, we have two Jameses, like two Reed Richards. It means nothing to me. Will we get two K's soon? I don't know. Let me tell you, because you don't listen, you don't know this stuff, but the last breath of the Empire podcast is literally Chris Hewitt going, don't listen to the pilot podcast. Yeah. Every week? No, no, just this one. Yeah. That's what we're dealing with. Yeah, yeah. Psychological warfare. Fortunately, No one listens long enough to hear it, so it's fine.
30:06Kay Ribeiro:Whoa, Sean's fired. You may be right. Hey, look, we got the Alien Earth spoiler special, so I say we're one up. Listen, I've got a message about that, so let me skip straight to that in that professional way. Right, so, Barb. Oh, my God, we've got a listener called Barbara, but she calls herself Barb, which I'm delighted about. Hashtag justice for Barb. And she says, I hope this gets through. Thanks for getting the Alien Earth spoiler special on the pilot feed where it belongs. More power to you, I think. One suggestion. since no one seems keen on pinning the email address on their socials too many of them to keep track of anyway how about making it a standard part of the show notes that can't be too difficult can it so many potential iterations Pilot TV Podcast Empire.com I could go on yes it's a dead horse but still love the pod and hey you're on YouTube which I prefer to watch at least at the start see your lovely faces and stylish attire I finally get the thing with Boyd and Supreme if only Empire could do the same all the chatter about Amon's wardrobe and I never get to see it.
31:04Barb from Maryland, USA.
31:07Kay Ribeiro:No, none of it. You occasionally get clips. Okay. But trying to wrestle the three-hour record that is the Empire podcast into an edited video would be, I think Chris would die. I think you just do a selfie then every week. Barb continues and says, she's been there from the very first Pilot TV podcast and she's an early subscriber to, yes, I gave up my Empire spoiler special subscription when I couldn't just by keeping both Empire and Pilot. I'm adding it by the way to the Pilot Plus show notes and speak wow exciting Bob he's listened Bob's got some power because he doesn't listen to anyone but now he is so yeah James is zoned out I'm just watching him I don't know why I'm watching him add that no he's he is actually doing what was asked of him to be fair yes listen this is me typing okay while you're typing someone dropping the F-bomb now hi James and the Pilot's genetic dynasty Good.
32:03Kay Ribeiro:Foundation reference, love it. I loved this latest series of Foundation. It had the clearest through line in terms of plot and character, but for the love of Selden, can you please explain the ending to me? Now, he goes on to mention some stuff, which I don't know if they're going to be spoilers. They will be spoilers. I can't because this isn't a spoiler for Foundation. I am going to really try and put one together, a spoiler special for Foundation. There are a number of logistical barriers to that, but I will do my absolute best. I believe the thing he's referring to, and I'm going to keep this incredibly oblique for people who haven't watched it is there is a deliberately opaque bit of storytelling where they don't explain what happened during a certain period and then they don't really explain why it then...
32:43Kay Ribeiro:Basically, a scene stops, another scene happens, and when you pick back up with those characters, something has happened and you don't know what, and you don't know why those characters now left that place. That would irritate the hell out of me. I must admit, at the time, I was furious about it because I'm like, we didn't even know the show would get renewed at that point. It has since been renewed. Relax. And I was just like, that was... It was unnecessarily obtuse, and I didn't love it. So I thought it was a great finale but that particular bit I thought was unnecessary. That is probably what Stuart is referring to.
33:08He also says, P.S. I'm a Plus subscriber and love the pod. In fact, I've never known such love, winky face.
33:14Kay Ribeiro:Wow. So thanks, Stuart. I think that was aimed at the OnlyFans. That's not really the Pilot Plus. And for that, you'll be rewarded with a Foundation Spoiler special at some point in the future. At some point in the future, yes. Right. Simon says, Hi. Just after listening to Pilot Plus and the listener who wrote in about listing top ten top 10 shows of the month at the end of every month. Can you imagine? Can you imagine? Wait, no, Simon's got a suggestion. He says, my suggestion would be why not just recap all the shows that you gave the TV show of the week accolade for that month, which would be four TV shows over the course of the month.
33:47Then you could all collectively agree on a fifth bonus show to watch or just rotate. For example, Kay picks the fifth show one month and James, etc. There is your top five for a month with minimum effort. He says, with a, you know, smiling... James' faces!
34:02Kay Ribeiro:We kind of have to do it now because he's had Simon Says. Okay, so James is... That's a verbal agreement from James that he's going to take on that responsibility. So, Simon, thank you for giving him that extra homework. There is a flaw in that plan because sometimes... Because the show of the week is basically one of the shows we've reviewed and we don't always necessarily review the show of the week because sometimes it might be an embargo or it might be, you know, a third or fourth series and we've dealt with that issue and we prioritise brand new shows. So, yeah, it's a flawed plan. I like it in theory, but in practice...
34:35Simon, we've heard you and we're ignoring you. I'm sorry. We're ignoring. We've, you know... No, we're ignoring the suggestion. We've taken it on board. We processed it. Boyd's shot it. Yeah, we rejected. We've listened. We rejected. We rejected. Sorry, Simon. We've found the flaws in the plan. Now for Callum, who says, Hi to the lovely Kay, plus TV's, don't ask me where my football team finishes, Boyd. He'll know what that means. and 2025's Forbes Influence of the Year, James.
35:02Kay Ribeiro:Wow. How is that going, by the way? Well, I'm taking a small hiatus at the moment, on account of I haven't done anything post-worthy. But I'll see if I can come up with something. How's the tickety-tock going? Tickety-tock. Do you know what? I have a video that I put up on Instagram, which was my Halloween Horror Nights compilation of all different houses, and I cut it to this ridiculous song, which I heard while I was out there, which just goes boom, boom, boom, and I cut the video to that. And I want to put it up on TikTok, but I can't. Why? Because it's licensed music. And Instagram will allow a minute and a half of it and TikTok will only allow 60 seconds.
35:37Kay Ribeiro:And I can't quite work out how to essentially make it shorter. So I'm struggling with that. Or the video or the audio. The video. The video. So I'm going to have to recut it as a shorter version to the song, but I'm struggling with it a bit. Instantly regretting asking you about that. So at some point, I will put it up on the top. But it will go up. Okay, so you've got the Foundation Spoiler Special to look forward to and also this TikTok. Yeah. But thank you to those few of you who have been following me on TikTok. I think I doubled the amount of people who followed me since last week, which is nice.
36:02You are set to be the Forbes influencer. Maybe over 100 now. What you need to put on TikTok is the full performance of your karaoke. That would. I would potentially download the app to watch it. No one needs to see that. Okay. So Cal says, with Dexter Resurrection wrapping up its second attempt at a reboot, I'd love to know your thoughts, and if we could sneak a spoiler special. Sorry if it's more work. as a long time Dexter fan who started watching with season one when I was 11 and now I'm 30 after the latest season I realise it's probably one of the longest running shows I've seen reboots and spin-offs included I believe the season is its strongest and will definitely have a space on Pilot TV's batshit-o-meter Defo Below Smoke I think Resurrection rewards people's patience with the show and its last two lines are evidence of that it's been extremely well written with the right amount of fan service without it being distracting and so many twists and turns that you're not sure how it's going to end.
36:56And yes, for the first time in ages, it fucking nails its season finale with 40 minutes of gripping tension. Did you all carry on watching or did you give up after... No. Boyd? Sorry. I'm just being honest. Or did you give up after the previous instalments and are there any shows that you've been watching for nearly 20 years? I think this will end up being my show of the year for pure enjoyment and meeting every expectation I and so many others had. All jokes aside, I love the pod I mean did he say he didn't jokes aside I love the pod well it sounds like a joke yeah and you all kept me and my fiance laughing during my summer trip to Mission Texas including at altitude to spend time with my fiance before she visited visited here at the end of the summer I've included a photo and then he's put you never walk alone cow what a handsome couple oh so he's a Liverpool fan okay that's fine that was the thing about football no no no that's fine I wonder if they watch the pits on the flight oh yeah everyone else is detailing that no you haven't oh yeah no I haven't but I really do you know I really enjoyed what I did see and I watched a couple of more episodes after we reviewed it did we review it I can't remember yeah we did we liked it I think certainly much better than the the originally recommissioned then cancelled oh when he wakes up in hospitals yeah yeah got it yeah it was good so I did really enjoy the whole thing of what I saw and I will catch up with it at some point soon especially people have been very complimentary
38:19Kay Ribeiro:well then we should do as someone who has seen every episode of Next Resurrection yes I finished it and we'll be talking about it on Monday's podcast that's what we've been watching I don't know why you're talking about until then smug face you should do a two man spoiler special I would like to do a spoiler special on that so you need to now watch all the rest of the episodes so we can talk about it I've already got like five more interviews to do next week okay fine so if you can watch it for next week's Pilot Plus that'd be good this is going to be an Arthur Fowler and Pete Beale special instead of a Dot and Ethel that's going to be your equivalent when you two...
38:50I mean, I don't really understand
38:51Kay Ribeiro:what those words mean, but I don't know. No, fine. Mike. Mike has written in. Hi, Mike. I was doing that thing that James did. I just wanted to say, I know this is technically a film, but it's so made for TV... Here we go. So this is, sorry, I should say, it's about the Thursday Mudder Club. Oh, yeah. I know it's technically a film, but it's so made for TV and probably not going to get much of a mention on either side of the fence of film or TV, so I'd like to offer some thoughts. I'm usually not asked with cosy crime but sometimes something is put together in such a way that it makes it hard not to soften and just make you feel well a bit better i love a good crime series and there have been some hard-hitting shows over the last few years but sometimes when presented with such a great cast and a cup of tea and a chance to take the load off for a couple of hours this just hits the spot even ben kingsley's speech at the end made me fill up a bit and i can't stand him in most things even brosnan made me chuckle and that's something i thought he was incapable of just the right amount of tension or lack of and a great rainy Wednesday afternoon watch.
39:51I'm currently caring for my mum full-time. She's 92 and has Parkinson's and I'll be honest if I have to sit through another Vera... This brought a smile to her face and mine so I'm grateful for that. Thank you for you three for always delivering a great pod and making my week that bit better and thanks for taking the time to read this. Long-term listener, Mike.
40:11Kay Ribeiro:I've not seen Thursday Night at a Club because I was away on one of my jollies when Empire reviewed it. I have heard not good things generally. Yeah, I didn't like it, but I haven't read the book. No, have I. I've read the book. I paid to go to see it at the cinema. Oh, yeah, you paid, yeah, misguidedly. Yes, and I was disappointed and I was a bit annoyed that I'd paid to see it at the cinema to watch. When it was going to be on Netflix the next day for free. Yeah, I know, because I was such a fan of the book. I thought, my friend and I were like, come on, let's go, and I'm going to admit, we went to the Everyman, so it wasn't cheap.
40:43But yeah, I don't think, it didn't deliver, and for me and it wasn't funny like as funny as I thought it'd be and I don't think it fully captured the dynamic of those four because that's what I love about those books is these individual characters but as a group is their chemistry and I don't know I just felt that was lacking but I'm glad Mike that you got a lot of pleasure out of it he got mixed reviews but a lot of people got some quite I think Golden Gate four stars I seem to remember which was interesting and unusual I didn't like it at all but I do know lots of people who have quite enjoyed it I think Helen quite liked it on Empire well if Helen likes it it must be great but opinions differ certainly but I mean it was number one easily probably still is I haven't checked on the UK Netflix film chart so I'm sure I'm sure there will be more they'll carry on making them because there's how many he's done like three or four books in that series now yeah he's got another one coming out in September that I've just reviewed now for a canadia canadia canadia canadia i do like canadia all hail canadia shut up oh canadia was that the song reading is hard a canadian listener alert um hi everyone a listener from canada here thanks for keeping me up to date with the great and sometimes not so great british shows if you're allowed to run your own show what would be your basic premise and the genre of the show thanks Marcus if you're allowed to run our own show go on yeah mine would be like a romantic comedy drama and be very actually I'm not going to go into too much detail because I'm not writing yeah maybe you'll feature guys maybe you'll be in the world of magazine journalism it's going to be called the podcast yeah like ER suing the pit I might sue you if it's too near the knuckle no it'll be a character called Floyd can't touch me Floyd Bilton yeah Stilton Floyd Stilton.
42:43Kay Ribeiro:Venerable TV critic, Floyd Stilton. Yeah, just a bit too cheesy for my liking. Yes, but that would be it. And it would be all about, you know, the interrelationship, interpersonal relationships. I was thinking the other day that one of my favorite shows of all time is the Larry Sanders show, which was, of course, set in the world of American chat shows. And that world has become even more kind of madly hacks. The last series of hacks touched upon it a lot as well. but British chat shows like a British version well he hasn't he did a spoof of the one show if you like with this time but I'm talking about like a Graham Norton style chat show kind of comedy set comedy that's got potential I would like that because I'm fascinated by that and by the way breaking Graham Norton show news which I'm going to break to you now because it's just it's incredibly exciting that I've just had in my inbox apropos of nothing well apropos of how exciting this news is coming up on the second episode of the new series of Graham Norton show on Friday the 3rd of October on BBC One Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith Cillian Murphy who's in this new film Steve Lewis Capaldi performing our friend friend of the show Donald Gleeson and do not do it and and go on Taylor Swift oh my god look at him are we watching can I just tell you something right when you started that up you could see like internally his eyes were rolling he was like what is he doing this is not the first segment he should save it for the main and now he's delighted now I'm on board but the most exciting thing for that is that our friend Donald Gleeson is going to share the sofa with Taylor fucking Swift he is are you Swifty why are you so excited by this no I'm more excited about Donald I want to see the interaction between Donald Gleeson charming very charming what do you do if he comes on and she goes Donald Gleeson listen I mean she's found to isn't she yeah of course that seems a done what a coup though for Graham Norm that seems a done thing she has been on before I know I know she's been on before but still also James just like you know there's a Channel 4 show I think is it one off but that's not she's not actually in that no she's not in it that's the documentary yes I mean you will know as a diehard swifty I will be reviewing it on this podcast you'll know everything that's in it we could review it on this podcast no we will no we are it's happening have you seen it no no but I'm just not a particular fan no I know but you'll like the part you'll force me to like it like Foundation I'll make you watch that as well it's going to waterboard me with that documentary anyways message from Holly now about Sirens do you remember that yes okay Well, she says, hello all.
45:09Slightly belatedly, I was wondering if any of you have ever finished Sirens on Netflix early this year. I recently binged it over a weekend and really, really liked it. It didn't end up being at all what I expected in the end or what it presented itself as and was all the better for it. and speaking of Netflix binges I just wanted to shout out long story short it's animated and I wasn't naive enough to think you'd actually review it but it being the new show from the creator of BoJack Horseman aka one of the best shows of all time I thought James I thought it warranted a mention on the pod it's a decade spanning comedy about a Jewish family with all the boys it has been very very well received and well reviewed in America carry on well Holly says yeah Yeah, it's a decade-spanning comedy about a Jewish family with all the heart, stupid jokes and pathos you'd expect.
45:57Well worth a watch for any BoJack fans. I really need... I've been wanting to watch this, actually, because BoJack was very good, despite what James is implying. And I really want to see the show, which everyone says is brilliant. Yes. Long story short. Two last ones. Okay. Very quickly. A message from Emma Thompson. Oh, my friend Emma Thompson. Not that Emma Thompson. after I did an even better one. BAFTA Life in Pictures with her a few years ago. Are you friends? Well, I met her. She was absolutely delighted. I interviewed her for an hour and a half at BAFTA, yeah. I considered myself to be friends after that.
46:34And she stayed awake? She seemed fully awake, yeah. Generally. It was just her, so it would have been embarrassing if she could fall asleep. With the freezing to your friends, that was a panel
46:44Kay Ribeiro:of four or five. I want someone to do a one-off television feature-length special about that Q &A with you and Stephen Frears. And it's basically just you trying to keep him awake. We'll call it the sum of all frears. That's good, yeah. BG. Anyway, Emma says, Hello, lovely podders. Firstly, a heartfelt thank you. I've been a pilot listener and subscriber from the very beginning. Two and a half years ago, my family and I moved from Australia to the US and it was quite isolating. Having you guys to listen to each week provided me with such a sense of comfort like having a chat with some friends.
47:18as sad as that may sound Pilot along with the Empire podcast really did get me through some difficult challenges in that period so thank you that's lovely Emma thank you for listening secondly Kay and Boyd talk so highly about the UK's last one laughing I implore you to watch the Australian version given your love of Aussie comedy I think you'll enjoy it I liked it more than the UK version but that might just be a cultural thing big words thanks again Emma
47:42Kay Ribeiro:is it just the same but you know upside down no I was going to say that's beneath you I don't think it is It would be above me, really, wouldn't it? Oh, James. And she says, P.S., so handy to be able to quickly check the pilot Instagram for the email address. And she's done the side eye face. So Emma, that made me go on to check. So I thought, has he taken it off? Like in a perverse move, deleted it from the Instagram? No! And it's there, so I don't know. Well, it's going to be in the show notes of every Pilot Plus going forward. He's listened to Barb. I have listened to Barb. Barb has spoken.
48:15Kay Ribeiro:And I have listened to Barb. so by Barb's decree it's going to be in the show notes Queen Barb brilliant right now the last message the last word goes to Dr. Kate who says dear team I'm a very long term listener from the first episode so there's a lot of first episode listeners out there aren't you happy about that? I am staunch staunch listeners they should all get we should have badges I think this is the new thing I'm proposing Kate's having badges made apparently we'll get like a little badge machine yes you will yeah Actually James will be too busy doing the roundup of the five shows of the month Oh my god Right anyway Long term listener but first time emailer Despite some of my colleagues' concern I'm a fan of TV shows set in a supposedly medieval time period I'm a particular fan of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon They are what us medieval historians secretly wish the medieval period was like I recently decided to do a complete early medieval period rewatch.
49:15All six series of Vikings, followed by the complete The Last Kingdom, and then three series of Vikings Valhalla. Wow. Together, they present an almost continuous narrative of several centuries of history of parts of Northwest Europe. Look at James. Loving it.
49:31Kay Ribeiro:Loving it. Imagine my delight to find that I'm also enjoying King and Conqueror. It will fit well onto the end of my rewatch, as many younger versions of the protagonists are also key players in Vikings Valhalla. My question is, can the team think of any other shows not necessarily related, which offers such a comprehensive retelling of an event or period of time? Very best wishes, oh, very good wishes, Dr. Kate. Ooh, but then isn't Dr. Kate a historian? And therefore an expert in this field. I should be asking Dr. Kate, because a lot of these things, I can't tell how historical they are. Like you look at something like A Thousand Blows.
50:07Kay Ribeiro:I mean, there's definitely some historical framework from which Steve Knight has drawn that story, but I don't know that I'd necessarily call it historical. So she's talking about an event or period of time. Like, it's not necessarily, well, obviously, I'm sure she'd like it to be accurate, but is there a period of time that has had that treatment by multiple shows? That's how I'm interpreting it. Well, World War II, presumably, would be the easy answer, wouldn't it? World War I less so because there are fewer World War I type shows have I mangled that let me just read my question is can the team think of any other shows not necessarily related which offers such a comprehensive retelling of an event or period of time yeah I think I am right yeah well specifically she's asking for shows rather than periods but I don't know is the answer to that off the top of my head you're right that Band of Brothers right that's the kind of show that I think she's talking about which was a very incredibly comprehensive look at that period in the Second World War.
51:08In the Pacific.
51:10Kay Ribeiro:And what was the plane one recently? Yeah, the plane one. Oh, Masters of Nuns. That's Masters of the Air. No, Masters of the Air. Master of Nuns was the Aziz Ansari second. Which is very much not about bombers. Yes, yes, yes. Although they may have bombed. Anyway, let's not get into that. But yeah, it's interesting. I don't know. I don't know the answer. I have no answer for you. King and Conquer is a pretty good example of that. They really, having hosted the Q &A and met the writer, etc., they very much used tons of research into what it was actually like. As far as you can tell back in 1066, etc.
51:49So that, but I think she mentioned that, didn't she, in her email. But that struck me as being a really interesting... When I watched the first few episodes of that show, I was like, is it really, that really would have been what it was like? You know, would the women have done what they do in that show? but they were pretty clear I mean obviously there's poetic license but the fundamentals of that show seem to be based on full research
52:11Kay Ribeiro:Well something like Chief of War obviously tells a story that I think most people wouldn't know the formation of the islands of Hawaii and that seems to be very well researched Shogun is obviously what I would go with because that particular period is it Edo period Japan I think that gives you an incredible look at that I remember when I talked to actual Justin Marks not the character from the morning show and Rachel Condo the showrunners of that and I was saying it's like watching a fantasy series because it's so divorced from our understanding of what society is. But it's so well researched as to how it works.
52:40You know what is meticulously researched? Foundation. No. That's in the future,
52:44Kay Ribeiro:you idiot. Yeah, but Psychohistory does not know, is not curved by linear time. Please flip that up. It's in the future, you idiot. Is Downton Abbey because Julian Fellows meticulously does research. Really? Yeah, all the stuff. And in fact, in the film, which we can bang on about because it's a film, it opens with this, I think, actually really good sweeping shot of like Lund Piccadilly Circus in London in 1930. And he was saying how they've absolutely made sure it was accurate and exactly what you would have seen if you were in 1930s London and Soho and then it hones in on a theatre where they're performing Noel Coward's play, etc.
53:23So I love all that. I love the fact that he really does take it really seriously. I think most people do, don't they? A high level of research if it's a period drama. No, some period dramas almost like pride themselves on being slightly like, we're not bothered about accuracy.
53:34Kay Ribeiro:Well, yeah, but also if the historical part of it isn't the most interesting, make it more interesting. I think, you know, for the sake of TV drama, that's fine. Like Peaky Blinders is in it like a rock and roll, you know, pop video version of that period of history and who those people were. And he said, you know, it's deliberately lighter than life. But other stuff that I think is very, like Chernobyl is a really good example of something that's historical and really well put together. Incredibly powerful drama. The Tudors is probably less so. I don't know how historically accurate that was.
54:03Kay Ribeiro:I'm not sure I would tell. Wolf Hall is probably more so than The Tudors, right? Wolf Hall feels... Very, very dark. Yeah, I would say so. Do you remember... There are ghosts in there. That is true. They are ghosts, lest we forget. That wasn't accurate. That was another one of our historians. Do you remember Rome, HBO's Rome? Of course. Which I loved. I barely saw that little basis in fact. but it was a lot of fun and The Great is another one where it's a very stylised interpretation which is Rome but much much better what was the this one Rome the favourite was that favourite was it Marie Antoinette no it wasn't was it it's not no it's not Marie Antoinette that's your you're thinking Catherine the Great is the great the favourite is Queen oh god which Queen is Olivia Colman Olivia Colman in The Favourite plays Queen Anne and yeah but I don't know I know nothing about Queen Anne is Sonshi.
54:56That can't be. I mean, they run right in that show. that's chaos. Yeah.
55:01Kay Ribeiro:And like, what was the one? Yeah. That's true. Yeah. Bridgerton, incredibly accurate. Absolutely spot on. Yeah. Don't come for, do not come for Shonda. Okay. Well, on that note, I think we've butchered history. So, shall we say adieu? Yes, but just a reminder, I'm doing a shout, I'm doing a shout out for, well, we know Atticus is our younger listener, but please do get in touch if you're older than Graham, who is 71. And you can find the email address in the Pilot Plus show notes. Thank you, Bob. James has finally pulled his finger out. I have. That's it for this week's Pilot Plus. Thank you very much for subscribing.
55:39Kay Ribeiro:We do appreciate it, mainly because you are literally the only things that allow us to continue making these podcasts. On Monday's show, frankly, we've got a Slow Horses special. We've got Christopher Chung, Roddy Ho himself is going to be on the show talking to Boyd. And also, the plan is for Ruth Bradley, Emma Flight herself to drop by the studio while we're recording so that might happen as well shows we're going to be talking about obviously Slow Horses we'll be reviewing that The Hack we're reviewing on ITV and Wayward on the Netflix that'll be exciting won't it I think so if the flight isn't delayed yeah oh I see what you did there thank you I see what you did there she wound in but that's the level of humour that you pay£3.49 a month for oh god don't people start asking for refunds see you Monday Pilot Out
56:24You
