In short

Pitchside’s World Cup review episode is about England’s quarter-final qualification after a 3-1 win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, despite a late red card. The hosts celebrate the “mentality monsters” performance: Mexico dominated possession, but England soaked up pressure and cleared their lines repeatedly. Key claims include: Jordan Pickford’s “mammoth” saves (including claiming crosses in the last 10 minutes), Jude Bellingham’s heroics (scoring the opener), and Anthony Gordon’s impact (winning a penalty and creating the second goal). Harry Kane is praised for scoring the penalty and for tournament form, with stats noted (Kane reaching six goals; first player since 1966 to score a penalty and concede one in the same game).

Notable examples

Raul Jimenez’s chances, the red-card sequence, and England’s low-possession, low-block survival. Guests aren’t present; it’s a host-only panel (names mentioned: Reeve, Lewis, and others).

1:01Hell yeah! aren't we guys? Because we're about to head to the pub to watch England take on Mexico at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. You're not nervous? Nope. Yeah, this is before the game happened, boys. Yeah, this is blind optimism. We're recording this ahead of tonight's match which has been delayed an hour. It's not blind optimism. So 45 minutes to go. It's pure confidence. It's our idea is to go and say, do you know what? I'm sorry. It's to go, do you know what? We're going to lay our balls on the table right here and we're... Ow. That's broke your new watch. New watch. And we're going to see the score, and this will go on the start of the video no matter what.

1:36So if we do lose, we'll look very silly. Well, England about to win 2-0, boys. Are you nervous, Reeve? Is that why? I'm nervous, yeah. I think we could be out tonight. No one... What do you mean? Yeah, it's a knockout game. Yeah, obviously we're all nervous, but we're trying... You just said you weren't. Everyone's nervous, but we're just trying to, like... I'm not nervous. ...compensate that by being overly cocky and confident. I'm actually not nervous, by the way. The English way. It's not... It's rainy, which is English weather. It's not that hot. They'll shoot a load of bollocks anyways. The fireworks didn't make any noise last night because they had little poof, poof, poof ones.

2:06Poof, poof fireworks. Yeah. So I think we're all right. We booked 15 hotels, so they didn't know where they were going. Yeah, but you did see that they sprayed their buses with foam, though. Yeah. By the way. Oh, we're going to lose. I know, obviously, we're about to go watch the game, but surely, you know, it's like, oh, I wonder if the players are nervous. Surely they'd be gassed by this. They'd be bang up for this. That's what Harry Kane said. The players are the ones in control of the game. Yeah. That's why I'm nervous. Score prediction, then. I will go England win in extra time. 2-1. 1-1 going into extra time.

2:36England, Nick will win in extra time. Yeah, I actually just think England win 2-1 full stop. Okay. Look at me in the eyes. I will promise on my body, my spirit, that we will win 2-0 light work at the Azteca. Well, boys, it's time to head to the pub and watch England win.

2:57Yeah! England! Bye-bye! So there we have it. Altitude this. Atmosphere that. England win. Altitude. Altitude.

3:16Arise, Sir Jude. Anthony Gordon. And Pickford today. Immense. Absolutely immense. Up the pit side. I can't beat Dan Byrne when he come on. I feel like I've played the game. My head is pounding. Best stadium I've ever been to. Best atmosphere I've ever experienced. The Mexicans have been great. But we're better than the Mexicans. We're better than the Mexicans. The only downside was I had to fucking experience it with him. No, I'm actually getting angry now. What a performance And the lads It's coming home We beat the Norwegians And then I actually think We may end up playing the Colombians And then Spain, France, whichever in the final Into them fuckers All the best England England Jude Bellingham Harry Kane Dan Byrne Jordan Pickford Jordan Henderson DJ Ed Spence John Stones Lads can I just tell you right now John Stones We don't need to go on Everyone Can I just say That was simply The best game of football I've ever seen in my life Also forgetting Anthony Gordon That's a bit rude Yeah I think you are right there Lewis I think that may be The greatest game of football I've ever watched In my entire life Maybe Most iconic football match Of all time Definitely top two Experiences of my life Yeah I'm actually so jealous Of all the boys That went to watch that I am on a bit of an adrenaline dump now, guys, because we've just got back from the pub and spent the last four minutes booking flights to Miami against the bloody Norwegians, mate.

5:06I'm going to Miami. And me with the Galdem. POV is... POV is Ashley Young with the Galdem. Yeah, honestly, right. We were in a very... We were in a very heavy... Actually, you know, this is how intense it was for me. I really couldn't, like, stand it. I actually stopped drinking at halftime. I was like, I can't like... Well, you spent the last five minutes the actual game facing either my chest or his chest. Yeah, I was grabbing my air, pulling my neck. I'm a quite fidgety, nervous person. I've noticed when you get nervous, you become very Debbie Downer about the team and what's happening. I wasn't Debbie Downer.

5:40I just said, I don't think we can hold on. Oh, we're not going to do it. We're not going to do it. By the way, that's not Debbie Downer. We were really struggling to defend with 11 men. I'm not one to defend momentum charts, but the one for the game is crazy. It's like topped out Mexico the entire thing. I think my concerns with Valid seems like we actually registered, this is a fact, the most clearances in a World Cup game since 1990. Is that true? Yeah. I like that one a lot. And also we recorded our lowest possession since 1960. And do you know what? Couldn't fucking care. Because that is one of the biggest performances I've ever seen an England team do.

6:23Absolutely. like mentality monsters everywhere across the pitch including the manager balls it has to be said big fucking balls inside the lion's den yeah but we are the three lions so you know it's never going to be easy is that the biggest snatch and grab of all time I can't say snatch and grab when we score three goals it felt like it though I'll just say I think it's absolutely crazy like at the moment that sending off happened like for us to actually have withstood that for that long and to the very end like they missed by just a yard with the clearance for John Storans they had the countless corners like I genuinely still can't believe we've managed to get through that and like hold firm like yeah it's kind of it's kind of a a non-England way of ending the game because as soon as the red card happened everyone in the pub well amongst the the group of us what are you doing oh you've got food yeah someone's oh sorry distracted me from my train of thought there no um I was getting like flashbacks of Rooney and Beckham yeah yeah literally all I was thinking about was Iceland Iceland and just all the all the sad moments that I've came up with Like, even when Harry Kane's over...

7:24No, but I mean specifically for the red card. It was like, it's going to happen all over again here. Sorry, guys. But we ended up going up the other end, Anthony Gordon, with a brilliant bit of work to win a penalty. Can I say, like, he's going to come good. Like, that is Anthony Gordon. He was phenomenal the whole game. He doesn't do that every game, fair enough. But, like, that is, he was directed, so aggressive. And the energy provided. Like, even the second goal, like, he tackled, won his battle to win the ball, passed it across, and we got a goal from it. Like, he's so unstoppable when he's like that.

7:52Let's actually go through the game then. We all know that that was the most insane game of football ever. First half, what impressed you? What didn't impress you? Game plan. Everything I asked for from Tommy's teammate we set up to do, we took this thing out of the Azteca, off the rip. Honestly, I think Gahin, Conso played like five, six, seven passes just out of sheer boredom to just try and keep the crowd at bay. The first quarter, obviously because we're calling it quarters now, I think we couldn't have played that much better in terms of how we knew Mexico were going to come out of it Mexico had the chances though Raul Jimenez is an example Jordan Pickford Jordan Pickford with an absolute mammoth performance yeah Pickford is what we want from him we said on the last single poll we need Pickford to do what he does and that game he's made up for any grievances we might have had in the previous games he's absolutely saved us three goals there weren't question marks about Pickford going into this game but he definitely hasn't been to the same level as we've seen him in previous tournaments.

8:56But my word, was that performance something of a true leader? Will came up with a really good point and do you know what? I'll back it. Do you want to say it? I feel like you should take credit for saying it. I was seeing, before the game, we were seeing, people were like, are these players going to be scared? Yeah, that environment is conducive to a certain right. I get overwhelmed by it. Some players will embrace it and I said, John Pickford, Drew Bellingham, are two of those players they're the kind of characters that love that kind of but I actually think that sort of resonated throughout the whole side that's against the world yeah yeah yeah it was kind of a squad wide thing but Pickford especially yeah like every single chance he had down I saw a comment before and it said Bellingham like won the game for us but Pickford dragged us over the line yeah that last 20 he came out and claimed absolutely everything he was absolutely he did not miss he did not miss every single cross in the last 10 minutes he was there punching the hell out of that and even when he wasn't big Dan Byrne was.

9:51Yes. Let's go back to the first half. Okay, okay. We'll get Dan Byrne. I will get on to that though. There's a lot to talk about because that was one of the most eventful games so far in the tournament. Yeah, I think we have to start from the beginning because we're going to get lost. Mexico in the first half, would you say they were definitely the better side? Yeah. They were the better side for the entire game. I think the first 15-20 was pretty even and then that 15 minutes it dominated and then the two goals just took the push. Up until what happened in the first half, I thought it was not cagey, but it was like everyone was just testing each other out.

10:19That's perfect. That's what we wanted. We didn't want this explosive Mexico team that come straight at you, get a goal early and then you're up against it the other way. And then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, was that our first attack? It felt like our first attack. Do you know what it was as well? Do you know what it was? It was Declan Rice just like saying, fuck this. And he got the ball and just carried it like 40 yards. That's why he's great at that. There's so much sideways passing and stuff. We didn't mention him at the start. Shout out to him. He basically just ran his socks off again.

10:46We have to mention it. everyone was unbelievable weren't they but Bakaio Saka the cross Jude Bellingham do you know what unmarked at the far post he lost his runner the Mexican player just decided to like oh I'm going to go back post I don't know if it was Gordon and just left Bellingham by himself because Kane ran across the front he just gave up someone already had Kane but the defender who had Bellingham just ran off to the left wing once again cometh the man cometh the hour Jude Bellingham puts us 1-0 up he's a fucking He is a fucking absolute hero. I'm going to get him tattooed on my forehead.

11:21I'm going to. You should do. I'm going to do it. I'm taking the leap. I did think though just to go obviously we're going to talk about people properly and critique them properly. I thought Saka was quite sloppy apart from their assist. Really? Yeah. He looks shattered. Who, sorry? Saka. Yeah. Having said that Saka has become just the third England player on record since 1966 with three assists in a single World Cup tournament with Beckham and Harry Kane. Bear in mind he's doing that not playing 90 minutes either. That's what I mean. Which is, this is, but Saka, we all know how classy he is, right?

11:53Of course. Even when he's not fully fit, he's still producing moments for us. And he's, ultimately he's helping us win the game, which is all that we can ask for. He changed the game, but you could just see it like, in the first like 30 minutes, you can see just a lack of attention to detail with touches, like, but then when it mattered. When he went for the ball, you know, on the stretch, he just like, Saka, a full fitness Saka would, would have been able to win. he pulled it out of the bag let's talk about somebody who has pulled out the bag Anthony Gordon yeah well the second goal can I just say he had a good game he is so unstoppable when he's like that and do you know what it was do you know why he was so good today because he had a few moments where he just beat that full back so easily and like for the rest of the game he just has that confidence where he's like I know I have his number he doesn't have to do anything he knows he beats him for base every time yeah and once he builds a bit of confidence he's so brutal he actually was albeit the third goal was completely orchestrated by him winning the penalty the second goal he does incredibly to get that even to Kane originally it was to Kane wasn't it or was it to Bellingham he managed to get into the back yeah how many seconds was it 98 seconds yes was it 98 seconds less than that less than two minutes less than two minutes those two minutes are up there with the best of my life I was at the bar ordering a drink misery compile and then we scored I went to turn around and celebrate with his all I grabbed someone and started jumping I thought it was you it was just some random guy he was fucking livid was he bold?

13:23no he wasn't in bold I didn't even see any I just grabbed the first human who was there he wasn't too happy we did have a bit of back and forth with a lot of Mexican fans in the pub that we were at guys with their horns quite a good jib and jive yeah wasn't it yeah it was that second goal talk to me about that second goal Reeve what do you think of it? Gordon outstanding to even create that originally I mean he's off balance so even flick it onto Bellingham Bellingham out wide to Kane they're basically going to carry us through this tournament and I have no fucking shame in saying that they are absolutely unbelievable if France have the the likes of Mbappe doing it for them why can't we I like to think that they've like probably mess each other it's on us lad really it's on us you do realise how how much they're hard carrying the entire team because they've start doing each other's celebrations it's literally like come on mate me and you let's do it despite having like despite having a lot of other big name players a lot of big players do you think they all know Bellingham and Kane a bit like Argentina based around Messi 100 % cemented themselves as the superstars of the team Jude is literally even in interviews like the interviews are going like oh okay Jude you're obviously Mr England now blah blah blah and he's like yeah I can't be cool I can't because he's still trying to play the humble gimmick but in that team he knows he's the fucking man doesn't he and that's in a team of players that have just won the Premier League Champions League everyone's given the ball to them everyone's prerogatives as soon as they Elliot Anderson picks up the ball it's give it to Bellingham and by the way and that's how we should be it's crazy looking back how we were debating on the show like do you go Bellingham or Morgan Rodgers no we no we well I didn't want to out him like that there was a debate before the tournament of that being the case definitely yeah I was on 50-50 I didn't mind either he's just such a powerful runner as well everything about his game is so enjoyable There was a moment where He managed to battle off a defender And he chopped it onto his right And then he somehow There was another third man come And he scooped it And you were like How's his brain processed that so far?

15:21Yeah, it's like He's just moving in slow motion He leads from the front The running he does The doggies he does as well He does the hard yards Which is He doesn't have to But he is Are we just Ignoring the block he made For it? Yeah Basically just Into the first half Oh my god I could fucking do things to him When he did that He's doing it at both ends My God. He doesn't even need to. Well, we obviously thought we were going in at halftime 2-0. Can I ask you a really quick question? Sorry, based on Browestain and Drew Bellingham. Where does he rank amongst all-time England greats at the moment?

15:52I think it's a bit early. It is a bit early, but he's... He's quickly getting up there, though. Look, he has so much time left with us especially if he wins the World Cup and he... Remember, he's still... How old is he? You say if he wins the World Cup? When he wins the World Cup. No, no, but I'm saying if he... Well, if he wins the World Cup, then the entire team... The entire team. They're all getting knighted. Greatest English player in all time. He's just turned 23. He's still 23 years old. God, I fucking know. He could become the most captain English player of all time. Probably will be. Yeah.

16:23At the rate he's doing it. Because who gets in the head of him, really? I'm honestly just grateful that we have a player like Bellingham. Because we have great players, but he is someone who will just take... He has a bit of nastiness in him, you know what I mean? And I think everyone needs a player like that who takes a game by a scruff of the neck. He plays in the Bernabeu every week where they fucking hate their own players. And he joined a such young age big fee. He enjoys that kind of environment. Now, obviously, we were 2-0 up. I think we all thought we're going to go into halftime, 2-0 up.

16:48We're going to win this game. The game's done. Hey, we started looking at flights from Miami there. I was singing going to Miami. And four minutes later, Quinonez, great finish. Once again, he produces the muscle for Mexico there. Well, that was his fault for the tournament, wasn't it? Yeah, he's a baller, absolutely a baller. What are your thoughts after that 2-1? Lewis, I'll come to you in this one. Because you instantly thought, oh, it's done. We're going to lose. This is the thing, right? so like my issue is a little bit like I feel like we lose our composure quite quickly when the momentum's against us but it's very harsh of me to sit here on a couch when I was drinking pints and criticise them for losing a bit of composure when you're playing at the Azteca against Mexico it's like but there was a really weird statement given that there was no momentum ever for us in the game no no no it was against us the entire not necessarily momentum but like it all of a sudden felt like we were really up against it and that goal went in and from then on to the end of the half we were scrambling everywhere but like it's frustrating but also it's bound to happen that's why the atmosphere is hard so we made it through it but I thought we were going to go in 2-2 honestly they had some big chances we did Jimenez one the same from Pickford by the way what the fuck is Jimenez doing I told you he's better than Jokre that guy pulled off like an unbelievable performance yeah this is a different Jimenez this is Mexico Jimenez what was he doing some of his headers he was on the turn from like 50 yards out putting in top bins also he's so pang it's Jimenez at altitude mate different gravy Ah, he floats easier.

18:11Yeah. Halftime, two and up against Mexico at the Azteca. Very nervy, genuinely. Yeah. Well, going into the second half, knowing that you only got a one goal lead. Just didn't know what England we were going to see in the second half. Well, we came out strong, though. Yeah, we did. I thought, once again, I don't know what Tommy's doing at these halftime team talks, but we came out with... Really good. Looking sharper, looking better, looking more composed. Yeah. It looked absolutely brilliant. And then, obviously... obviously that's one thing we were better i say i say we were quite sloppy in bits today but in terms of soaking up the pressure of the azteca i feel like we did a way better job than i thought we would do for the game i was really impressed how we came out second half i thought that was like like because they were honest as well but like we were creating some really good chances and i felt so comfortable up until the 54th minute yes the worst moment of my life points is that is that is that fair to send him off oh it's 100 % red i will say though It's absolutely nailed on record.

19:08It's a rash tackle, but he's quite unfortunate because when he slides in, his butt is... He was still high, though. His foot was still high. It was high, but his leg bounced on top of the ball and lifted his studs back up. But he was already high. Yeah, but his feet shouldn't be that high, man. I agree, but if he hit on the foot, you never know. You might get away because he'd touch a little bit of the ball, but it's because it bounces back up. It hits the center of the leg, and he was fucked. Studs up that high. What were your initial thoughts? Two one up. Red card. Do you know, ironically, I thought he actually wasn't terrible.

19:36like he's been chucked it right back once again probably not fully fit I thought he actually dealt with the threat of Canones quite well how can you blame him as well like he's coming up against like their best player in such a huge game honestly I can't imagine like the mental strength these players must have to be able to fucking deal with yeah mentality monsters mate every single England player today you were incredible we get Rick Carded he brings on John Stones who had an absolute stellar performance so composed he won every head every tackle You can tell he's proper played international football from a while.

20:08Proper player. But the momentum was definitely with Mexico when we went down to 10 men. And then all of a sudden, Anthony Gordon. I love him. Puts on the burners. Come back. Takes it past them. Am I right in remembering that Kane originally flicks it on somehow? It was a bit of a deflection kind of thing, but he was there though. That's what Gordon does best. He did it all game. He knows how to win a foul. He's one of the most foul players in the Premier League because he knows how to do it. And every single, he's basically screaming before he even got hit. He knows what he's doing. Harry Kane steps up.

20:42He's in the past. In the past, he's missed against France. He got lucky against Croatia, you could say, with the second penalty. Denmark as well. Do you remember when he followed it up? Exactly. So there has been sort of question marks over Kane when it comes to the biggest moments in past, which I think is fair to say. Different Harry now, isn't it? But when it comes down to it, he produced exactly what we needed because this is his tournament. He's now gone up to six goals. am I right? He's behind Yeah he's on six Mbappe, Messi and the trio Normal stutter None of this he did that one No but he did actually say that the stutter was for a reason right?

21:15Because he knows that that keeper tends to come off his line I just think when Harry Kane is that good you should never overthink that He's now joint with Gerd Muller fifth on the all-time World Cup goal scores 14 and 16 That is insane Yeah Harry Kane fifth all-time World Cup goal scorer Some good records He's going to be level with Ronaldo when he scores against Norway Jus Fontaine six matches 13 goals do you know what I mean so Hurricane scores 3-1 up we were all looking at each other like oh my god get on Skyscanner once more welcome to Miami yeah we kind of jump in the gun a little early because it's quite fun to do it though yeah it was definitely influenced by the other half of the pub that we were in yeah they were Vuvuzelas and also the Mexican players were winding me the fuck up like they're rolling about I don't know who the fallback is I'm going to find his name Is that not what you're booking?

22:05Yeah. What is the whole, like, anyone in this tournament that's been asking for someone else to get a year usually gets booked? Doesn't happen anymore. Quick side note, I actually thought the referee had a really good performance. I did as well. And I thought he actually controlled the game because a game of that magnitude of the amount of players that were moaning, especially towards the end of the game, he could have easily lost it and it all could have descended into chaos. But he kept it under control as much as he could. And I think he made all the big decisions he actually got correct. I was going to say, I don't think he got any huge decision wrong.

22:33which in context of how difficult it is to do in that stadium is fair for the play when Kane gave away the penalty obviously when they scored he got it right yeah it is a penalty we've seen them give it all season yeah I'd be fuming with that I will say as much as those fucking Mexican players are pissing me off don't you I love a game where it's got a bit of bite in it that's game of the tournament that was Cape Verde man I don't really know which to decide but from a personal perspective I think that's game of the tournament good little fact that could be an omen. Harry Kane, tonight, became the first player to score a penalty and concede a penalty in the same game since 1966.

23:13Whoa! I think that's a good one. Also, I've got a good one for you. Yeah. I don't know if you told me this earlier. I think I did. Maybe I didn't. Jude Bellingham, no, the TV told me. Jude Bellingham is the first player to score a brace in a World Cup at the Azteca since who? Diego Maradona. 1986. Hey, and who won that year? what oh the team yeah nice got you so you're saying Drew Bennett is going to win it I will say when they when they got the penalty and we scored that it's an interesting question I was so fucking upset because like I just got my hope right back up imagine it as like everyone and then straight away you realise 35 minutes of holding on long way to go after that pen you know if we do go on to win it guys I'm coming around to the idea again I'm starting to be a fan of the idea I think that was I think that was the kind of performance that a champion would have people that win the World Cup could potentially produce.

24:05And also the Harry Kane interview. That's the kind of thing that you look back on. Him losing his voice is the funniest thing. Oh my God. Sog the Mickey Mouse. I don't know. And then Jordan Henson in the background just breaking his arm. Jordan Henson. The most chaotic ending. Snapped his arm in half. I will say though if we go on to win it who do you think wins the golden ball out of Bellingham or Kane? At the moment it's got to be Bellingham. I'll give it Bellingham. Kane will win golden boot and Bellingham with golden ball. Yeah. Benningham deserves it yeah aside that on Jordan Pickford most World Cup appearances for an English player joint with Peter Shelton now so he's going to break it against Norway I was saying to you 17 yeah 38 I was saying to you in the pub like he Jordan Pickford in a place like the Azteca is you when you're in that situation you want a fucking mad bastard like like he's a fucking psychopath when you went to get your tackle bill but say it again oh did you yeah yeah yeah well you that's the kind of personality you need in that I was saying yeah you want an absolute psychopath who's like thriving off it and he's not afraid he lives for those sports that's why he's class he was shit housing when they were going wide as well yeah I love that though he's not shying down at all he's still being his fucking same self he'll be at the rave tonight he's slick back Pickford though isn't he like you did he say in an interview like why do you only do that in games and he's like that's my game face yeah that's my game face we've got a side track we look right there 3-2 3-2 once again Tommy T is not afraid to make subs and And every sub he's made so far in this tournament, I think, has been spot on.

25:34Brilliant substitution. Dan Byrne was brilliant when he came on. Ballsy. Ben was brilliant when he came on. Very ballsy subs, man. Absolutely. I can't fault a single English player tonight. Subs were brilliant. The way Dan Byrne came on. And why you win Jack Ball, mate? Phenomenal. It was Pickford coming up for everything. Byrne. DJ Ed's been putting his heart on the line. John Stones. Everyone defended for their lives. It was 5-4-0, wasn't it? It was incredible. Absolutely incredible. And Jude Bellingham did not stop running that entire game. No, he's brilliant. He was doing... He was out on his feet at the end, wasn't he?

26:08He's the fittest bloke. He's the fittest bloke of all time. In both ways. Yeah. I will say, though, it's such a hard watch to be like, guys... It was awful. Clearing it over and over and over and over and over again. And the thing is, it's awful for us. I can't imagine being a player on the pitch and see it known. you are 35 minutes of relentless Mexicans running at you it's like fuck me you'll be so switched on mate but I think defensively ironically all of my qualms of you know being bad at the back maybe we just go into a low block every game should we yeah let's just go the irony of me saying England can't break down a low block and then becoming the best low block of the tournament so far is so funny I was going to ask you that actually there's a start on the screen there England just had 33 % possession.

26:55Now, I know we had went down to 10 men, but even in the first half... Finish that sentence. I know, yeah. Their lowest in a FIFA World Cup match on record since 1966. What's happened in that year? Obviously, the stars are lining. But what I was going to ask was were you a little bit surprised and disappointed that we didn't maybe get as much possession and get a hold on the game? Do you think that... No, because I think at the start we actually were on the ball quite a lot. Me going back to the whole taking this thing out of the Azteca again. I think the first 20 minutes, we executed the initial phase of how to break ourselves into that game perfectly.

27:33But then after that, it was just a bit... Actually, to be fair, it was after the first goal. It just became chaos football. It was mental. It was like some sort of anime football. I'm not going to sit and be like, I'm surprised that Mexico dominated possession at home as Tech with their homes. That atmosphere sounded nuts. You saw how Harry Kane couldn't even speak. They could probably barely hear each other on the football field. I said communication for that game would have been impossible. I'd like to see all of us, anyone else play possession football whilst you have 90 minutes of the fucking hard on in your shorts.

28:02Oh, Nico Raleigh was good too. Huh? We've got to mention him. We haven't mentioned him, have we? Yeah, everyone's good. And just a little nod. To anyone down on Dan fucking Byrne. That's why he's came. That has proven his worth. Everyone's questioning, why is fucking Dan Byrne there? That's why. He's a big fucking head. He's so big, by the way, that he jumped up for a header and he was still taller than Jordan Pickford, with full outstretched arms. I've heard he might even be taller than Garibardo's son. Does that make Dan Byrne the tallest person in the world? In that ground? What did you make of the Rice and Henderson's performance?

28:37Rice and Anderson in the middle. Well, if you want to talk about Henderson, isn't he the first footballer? Is he the only player ever? The only ever footballer to get a yellow card and stretch it off without even coming. None of the last performance from the guy. Rice and Anderson in the middle, what do we think? I think they got a little bit overrun compared to previous games. But again, they were so elite in doing their jobs. I actually thought, sorry, I actually thought they, not non-existent, but I didn't really notice them during the game. That's what I mean. Like it was so much so it was defence and attack that I felt like Anderson and Rice sort of just got skipped a lot of the time.

29:14Yeah, there was no real midfield battle. No, I don't know whether it's a positive thing that we didn't notice them or a negative. I don't know, but they ran their socks off and that's all you can ask for. I think it was a bit of a negative. I also think that they were getting pulled into so many different directions that they were never really in their position. And then Reyes also made the first goal happen as well. Of course. But it was so end-to-end they didn't get a chance to really get on the ball. Yeah, it's so much intensity for a game like that. As a midfielder, it's difficult to put a grasp on it, isn't it?

29:38Absolutely. Absolutely. But look, England got the job done. Yes. We got over the line in one of the greatest World Cup games I think I've ever seen. Certainly in my memory, that's the best England performance I've seen. I can't even imagine what the boys were like at the game. Honestly, it's absolutely phenomenal. Guys, we have booked off flights and Airbnb for Miami. Welcome to Miami. By the way, some stats. Just to highlight how impressive a victory this potentially is. Before tonight, Mexico had never lost a World Cup match at the Azteca. Winning eight, drawn two, winning the last six in a row.

30:12In competitive matches, they'd won 70 out of 89, losing only twice. and this was the first time Mexico conceded three goals in a match at the Azteca since August 1999. They conceded more goals today than all of their previous 10 World Cup matches at the stadium combined. But they hadn't conceded a goal this tournament and we put three past them. Yeah, man, they're a hard team. They're a really good team. Also, the top 10, they're 10th in the rankings. The big criticism, yeah, the big criticism of England. Is it 14th on the screen? The 14th. We're 10 behind. No, they are 10 ahead. They're 14. I just looked on FIFA there.

30:45There's a discrepancy of 10 then. that must be pretty good. But we've beat Croatia and Mexico, both top 15 ranked countries and that was our criticism before that we couldn't get the high ranked countries. No, honestly, that's the most impressive performance I've ever seen in England play. For me, just on thinking, for me moving forward, look, I don't care about, oh, can we play better? Can we have more percent? Yeah, of course. It's tournament football now. The main thing I'm happy about is like seeing, like, no matter what, like, just the absolute grit in the team because I think no matter, you can have, like, worse levels but if you've got a bit of grit about you, you can fucking do everything.

31:15We still don't win the World Cup, by the way. No. I'm not sure about that, buddy. But after performances like that, I think we will. I'm just trying to think you are crazy. Guys, we're not going to discuss the Norah game, because we're going to do that later on this week. What we are going to discuss is other games that have happened. Notably, Argentina-Cate Verde. Well, that's got another argument for best game of the tournament. It's certainly got an argument for goal of the tournament. That Lopez Cabral goal, mate. What a fool. Also, Vazinho with another fantastic game. Yeah, he's on 50 million followers now.

31:4750? Might be. He actually might be. Messi, once again, scored his seventh goal. Yeah, he's on 20 for his life. By the way, the touch and finish there is fucking unbelievable. And he missed a one-on-one later on as well. I genuinely, how on a heart, thought Cape Verde were going to do it, you know. They came back once. Then they came back the second time. The third thought, okay, this might be too much. But they have gone back heroes of their nation. This is why we need to take a little bit of slack on our own team. Because say Argentina just scrape off Cape Verde and you'd still fancy them to win anything.

32:23I know we've not been great in other games, but it's a hard tournament, isn't it? It's a lot harder than you think. Are you now less scared of an Argentina? Just to go back there. I beat you then, haven't I? I know because USA play tomorrow, don't they? I have England. I said USA go further than Mexico. Yeah, I said Mexico went further. but I did say it depends on who has the easiest draw and USA has, what do they have? Belgium. Donald fucking Trump making phone calls and cheating. Quick word on that. It's an absolute disgrace. FIFA are absolutely embarrassing. You're fucking in the pocket of a president.

33:00The White House apparently, and this is properly reported, got lawyers outside the White House for it to be legal and got them lawyers to contact FIFA and bullied them into getting a player available for a game against a shit Belgium side. so if it's actually pathetic I will say it's a harsh red to begin with but even so would any other nation get that turn around any other nation get that turn around it's fucking it's ridiculous realistically right it shouldn't be in a red however the way they've gone about it of rescinding it is utterly embarrassing like on that say that happened to Paraguay do they get it turned around of course it's getting his rescinded now it's fucking ridiculous I don't think that'll get rescinded to be honest he might if we are if fucking Starmer steps in he's not even the president prime minister is he no although he did keep the pubs up until 5am today.

33:43Is it Andy Burnham? Andy Bo Burnham. Who's our Prime Minister? We're still Keir Starmer. Oh, it is Starmer still. Yeah, he's not. There's a time before he just stepped down. There's got to be a leadership contest, but it's Andy Burnham. Anyway, we're not a politics podcast. Yeah, we're not a politics channel. Norway beat Brazil. Norway. Wait, you said we weren't going to touch on that. We're not talking about that. No. Here we are. You said we're not talking about that. We're not talking about the Norway game, but... No, we're not going to talk about England-Norway. Oh. He said the Norway game.

34:09Yeah, the Norway game. England-Norweg I talked about that You said we're not going to talk about the Norway game Yeah going forward But we need to talk about Norway-Basill Guys I literally was referring to that Whilst we're talking about England Oh so you're not talking about the future Norway game No Okay we can do that Obviously we can talk about Norway-Basill Norway how impressive are they Are you concerned? Yeah honestly like International Odegaard Sign him up for Arsenal Erling Braut Haaland by the way That second goal is disgusting. So there's a stat there. He's now scored in each of his last 14 competitive international matches for Norway making it 27 goals across this run.

34:49Can we address the elephant in the room as well? Early about Harland. It is Gabriel once again getting absolutely destroyed by Harland. Why have you got to make this about? Why have you got to make this Gabriel Harland thing? Because that's one of the best battles in the Prem and also they just battled it out here. What do you mean? Why are we going to make this about one of the most interesting battles on the pitch. No, you're just trying to bring Arsenal into it. You're what, Marquinhos? Did he really Marquinhos? But Gabriel and Haaland is one of the best battles in the Prem. Yeah. By far. And then Haaland absolutely fucking had his life.

35:20World Cup season, baby. And also, they always go back and forward on social. Why can't you just address the fact that Gabriel got absolutely fucking... Oh, it was amazing today. Yeah, but so was... Brazil just weren't very good today. How would they make this for Arsenal? I'm not making it... By the way, it's why... You don't have to be sensitive. Bruno missed a penalty. He fucked it as well. but it is a very interesting battle. What about Martin Odegaard turning up in a big game? Yeah, we can talk about that in a second. Bruno missed a penalty. You don't have to be sensitive about Gabriel. That's a really good battle but Haaland fucking destroyed him.

35:50It's an interesting topic. I agree. Haaland was brilliant. Okay, we can't criticize Arsenal players. No, we can't. Bruno G did miss a penalty. What's going on with Bruno? We can't talk about that. No, this is your boy. No, because it's fine too. Bruno shouldn't be on pens. I love Bruno. He's had an unbelievable tournament. I'm really sad for him that he missed. But I'm not a fan of stutter penalties at all. But who else takes it? Well, Neymar scored. Well, Neymar scored is. No, but Neymar wasn't on the pitch. He was on the first half. But when he came on, he's now become the... He should have been sent off, by the way.

36:23It's a disgrace. Yeah. But he pushed him in the chest and then carried on. It's because they were knocked out already. Where's he retired from? He's retired. He's only the second ever Brazilian player to score in four World Cups. Yep. First big Pelé. I will say though what a performance by Nieland the keeper yeah saved a penalty made four massive saves kept them in the game leaves himself into a move Berg Berg Berg not Sander Berg the other Berg actually just Berg I'm scared of Norway he was great wasn't he they are genuinely based on what I've seen they are just a they deserve to beat Brazil yeah Brazil were wasteful Hendrick missed that one on one that could have been the game put to bed.

37:06Bruno missed the penalty. I think I'd rather play Brazil over Norway. Is this a real concern for Brazil though going forward because they are no longer the Brazil, right? This is their earliest exit of a tournament since lifting it in 2002 round of 16. But they haven't, am I right in saying they haven't really done much recently? They haven't found a semi-finals. Yeah, like this Brazil team is getting worse. It feels like they're in between eras. Like, they've got a lot of old players in there. They've got a few young lads, but Endrick, like he came on instantly should have scored and didn't Ryan's been alright for them to be fair but I mean you know I think at the start we all said Brazil were going to flop and ultimately they're out already I'm not surprised to be honest I'm not surprised and Norway just they have nothing to lose but yeah this is what I'm saying like Brazil to them aren't this kind of mega team that they should be afraid of and set up differently Norway attacked them they went for the jugular they're scary though They literally outpassed them by what?

38:06300 %? They got so much order as well. They had like three times. Norway had three times the amount of passes than Brazil did in that game, I'm pretty sure. Which is fucking mental. What does this mean for Ancelotti then and Brazil football moving forward? Because this is one of their worst ever performances. It's the earliest they've been eliminated from the World Cup since 1990. So yeah, what I'm seeing is what next? That contradicts someone's 2002 start. Reeve. what just happened just then well I heard it on commentary today so I don't know so what so what was yours because I was just after lifting it since 2002 well mine is still correct yeah after lifting it since 2002 yeah it can't be the worst exit since 1990 if they won it in 2002 no they weren't exited yeah they won it they won it yeah my stat they're both correct stats my stat was since 2002 this is the earliest they've gone out of a tournament yeah so what I'm saying is what next are they going to stick with Ancelotti I think there'll be a big overhaul because not only will you see a lot of these players I don't think Casemiro will continue I think obviously Neymar's retired Marquinhos is getting on do you know what I mean I think Ancelotti will I can't see him sticking around nah can you see him sticking around well nah he's not going to be unless he's got some crazy contract who knows but nah I think they're going to have to I also feel like he's probably just in the position of thinking that maybe the task is just too great Like, I'm not the guy to revive Brazil back to their glory days.

39:35I just go back to... But with Brazil, though, they... Club management. They have a future in their forwards and midfield. It's their defence, which I'd be worried about. Yeah, for sure. Because it's only really Gabriel. Who are their full-backs? Who are their full-backs? Santos and Danilo. I mean, they haven't really got great quality... Look, famously throughout the years, Brazil have had an amazing... They're in a weaker era at the moment. Like, I can't think of many... Like, they've got a few good prospects, but it's nowhere near, like, what they used to be. It feels strange having a Brazil team with not really any superstars.

40:04Well, Vinicius Jr. is a superstar. Yeah. True. All right, yeah. He had a good tournament. Yeah, and he played all right. And then what was it? France. Yeah, France. They came up, isn't it? Paraguay put up a fight. Mbappé, Jude and Vinny having brilliant tournaments, but yeah, playing together is just too hard for them. They're all right. Yeah, Paraguay were a bit of the naughty side, some would say, would you say? A bit aggressive, were they? They were for war. that's how they that was their game plan and did you see Mbappe's interview after the game which was a lot of people are like yeah we like this side no because it's 4th of July and we were all very drunk so I haven't seen he was basically saying like look they obviously wanted to come and like fight us and they probably thought we were just like trying to do this pretty football around and not go for the battle and he's like nah we gave it fucking back this is it this is why we won so we took the war to them yeah but great but there was only 1-0 they showed a little way of a way of playing against them by the way.

40:59Penalty to get them through. They got it done. Ultimately, they did get it done. What I'm saying is, for anyone coming up against France now, please, because we ideally just want someone to knock them out for us. Morocco now, I've got. Yeah, Morocco. There's a little blueprint there. Morocco as well could be fucking amazing. Morocco are just difficult to beat in general. France did batter them, though. What do you mean? They actually did, Paraguay didn't have a, they didn't look like they were ever going to win or score. Yeah, but that was, Paraguay literally had 24 % possession. But that was the same That was the same as the England DR Congo performance, though, wasn't it?

41:31We were absolutely peppering the keeper, but if you look back, it was closer than first thought. So we've got four of our quarter-finalists confirmed. France, Morocco, play to that. Norway, England. What are your predictions for the next? Portugal, Spain. What are you thinking? Yeah, we're live-streaming that, by the way. If you want to come along and watch that, that'll be at 8 o 'clock. Today, we're streaming that later today. That's Spain. I think Portugal do it, you know. I've got a sneaky suspicion. I'm actually just not really impressed by either team. Yeah, that's what makes me think. I have absolutely no idea what's going to happen.

42:03Spain looked good against Austria, though. Spain conceded a goal yet. Did well against Austria. Has Spain conceded a goal yet? I don't think so. It has to be. I think Spain got it. So the winners of Spain and Portugal play USA or Belgium? Also, I have Portugal in swoop stakes, so I say Portugal. I think USA beat Belgium. I think USA do beat Belgium. Well, they better. A Balogun debacle. Well, we already... the first goal. I'm interested to see whatever this officiating is going to look like. Maybe they should make a fucking phone call to the ref. The other games, obviously, on Tuesday, you've got Argentina, Egypt, Messi versus Sauer.

42:38Yeah, Messi versus Sauer and Haaland versus Kane. That's some good... And Switzerland, Colombia is the other one. Yeah. Colombia go through in that one, in my opinion, and Argentina go through against Egypt, I think. Brilliant. Then we've got a day off on Wednesday, guys. What about you? You guys got Argentina go through and Colombia go through Argentina and South America absolutely and how good of a fixture is that? would it be that's proper it is them isn't it? yeah that's the same half of the bracket yeah it is yeah Argentina versus Colombia would be a feisty game and then we play the winner yeah oh my god hell yeah we're going to win the luck to Colombia I think that's it I think that's it yeah we've done a while there hopefully you guys made it into work at some point today yeah I'm glad it wasn't too rough for you waking up and listening to this guys but yeah England we're very proud of you on to the next one Azteca done and dusted one for the history books in the back pocket bro I'm so grateful dude Benningham mogdall of Mexico let's go
