In short
Pitchside debate on the World Cup knockout stage so far, focusing on England’s group performance, likely Round of 16 matchups, other Round of 32 results, and a “team of the tournament so far” fantasy XI.
Guests
Tommy G (host/regular, “Ali G” style banter) and co-hosts Reeve and Theo (plus “Will” and “DJ” referenced in discussion). No formal playing backgrounds given; they’re football fans/commentators.
Key claims
England topped the group with 7/9 points and two clean sheets; fans are too pessimistic. Tuchel is praised for having a plan and being “bought in” to manage crunch time. Main concern is breaking teams down if they score first (e.g., Mexico). Saka’s fitness is questioned; Rashford is preferred as an impact sub. England should beat Congo comfortably; Mexico/Ecuador are the tougher “one-goal-up and sit back” risk.
Notable examples
Germany eliminated by Paraguay on penalties; Canada beat South Africa 1-0 with Alphonso Davies impact; Morocco’s penalty-shootout prowess; Messi’s tournament haul and free kick debate; France and Mbappe discussed as potential all-time World Cup great. Team-of-tournament picks include Vazinha/Vizinha, Daniel Munoz, Borges, Kubasi, Van Hecke, Robinson, Bruno Guimarães, Bellingham, Messi, Dembele, Mbappe, and Haaland.

08Good to see you, mate. How have you been? Great shirt. Great shirt. How have you been? Yeah, pretty good. Just maxing, relaxing, ain't too taxing. You know what I mean? You look really good today. It's come with new catchphrases. I like it. It's like we've unlocked a new version of Tom. It's Ali G. Ali G. From Ali G. I'll just copy everything from that. Sorry, I'm trying to get this fucking thing off because Stanley's having a go with me. Right. Okay, now we can talk. Oh, no more labels, no free brand deals. What do you want to know? Well, I want to know this, Tommy G, all right? Not only are the group stages over, all right?
40Guess what started? The knockout. But before we get on to that, I want to know, Tom, what has your thoughts on England being in the group stages? Have you been impressed by it? Do you think Job done seven out of nine points, a goal again for Harry Kane, I think is a pretty good job, unlike Reeves' opinion. What's your opinion, Tom? Yeah, I mean, obviously, we briefly discussed this yesterday, but I'm just no I mean privately we're the private chat we're the private Skype I think I'm completely fine I'm happy I'm still pretty I still think we're going to do what I thought semi-finals win it I want to address some of the fans back home commenting loads of shit on the last England review pod we're like yeah go Reeve yeah yeah and complain and agree and I don't understand how that's the the common opinion to be really pessimistic when we just top the group two clean sheets I think the general opinion can be people can be frustrated in the performances but obviously you still win the game what do they actually expect by the way because bear in mind we haven't actually won the World Cup in 60 years you have to understand with the English fans and again I don't know if it's true with every national fan base it's very different to club fan bases where people are like they'll defend their club till the hilt with England there's a lot of people who have a lot of like preset agendas for example a lot of people don't like Tuchel being the manager I don't think any national manager should be foreign, that's just my opinion that's by the by however, I'd rather be rung and England win it whereas other people would rather be like, see told you if England would have won each game 4-0 right, some people would have said, well we haven't had a competitive game, how are we going to prepare for Brazil so no matter what England would have done people would have found a way to be negative or slate it, the bottom line is they've done the job, they've topped the group and we've seen other teams who haven't topped the group, like Portugal and that, have now got a really tough tie, we've got one of the easiest ties on paper, because obviously we saw what happened with Germany yesterday, but I just think, relax man, judge them, judge them when it gets to the crunch time, which it's starting to get to, which is why Tuchel has been bought in, judge them then because at the minute they've done what they've had to do I also back England far, far more against a better side, by the way, because we looked way better against Croatia because Ghana and Panama sat back and that's where we struggled a little bit more.
03But if we come up against a better opponent, they're probably going to give it a little bit more large to us. We do have to go through two non-better opponents to get to the better opponent. There's a reverse issue of that, though. When you play a better opponent and they go 1-0 up, they can just sit back and we'll never score. Or even if we play against Mexico, they can easily score 1-0 up against us. And that's when the issue comes up, Paul. That's the concern. can we break them down from being behind? Because we haven't displayed being able to break teams down very well, really. Also, do you trust England not to not concede three or four against France?
38Don't worry about France. They're on the other side of the bracket, don't worry. Don't worry about France, Brent. I just think, yeah, we're fine. We're fine. We're fine. We're fucking fine. Our two best players are playing well. We're fine. I do think the wingers worry me. massively because of this system relies on them playing well as well, which I don't know. Saka's not fit, is he? He probably shouldn't have gone, if we're being really honest. And this is coming from someone who, you know what I think of Saka for England. I think he's been one of our best players for years. But he can't. He just looks a shell of himself, doesn't he?
13Like he's not explosive. Who's even the alternative, though? He's going to have to be Mandweke, isn't he? No, but like say he didn't go, who would have taken his place? Rio? Yeah. Oh, shit. Yeah, yeah. That is actually a harley looking back at it. obviously one of the big criticism is that Harry Kane, he's got three goals, which is brilliant, but we're not giving him enough service. There's not enough creativity. Have we gone, why haven't we taken something like Rio, who would have just been perfect coming off the bench and being like... Oh no, but then Will, I'm getting so bored of this chat of, oh, he should have gone, he shouldn't have gone.
44They're there now. They're there now, aren't they? He's got, there's method to his madness, whether you agree with it or not. Yes, I'd have taken Trent, but I also wouldn't have probably set up England the way he's going to set them up. That's why he's one of the best managers in the world. I'm not a top-class manager. He's got a plan in place. And until it fails, let's just back it and trust it. And then when it fails, I'll slate him and call him a charlatan. I did say this pre-tournament. There was loads of huge decisions with the squad, but at least that means he believes in something. It's not just conforming to whatever the public opinion is.
21We wouldn't do that anyway. I don't think he'd do that. We've topped the group after the Croatia game. everyone's opinion on Tuchel after the Croatia game was oh my god he's done it we back in this is why he picked the players that he did everyone was in agreement to it it just felt a little bit like we regressed a bit really got our Hawks up that first game not going to lie it's the style of the game of course those games have always been boring when we play teams like that because teams are going to set up against us like that but in fairness we found a way like the Ghana game in the end we were lucky because I think they should have had a penalty but in the end on the basis of it the facts are if Kane scores a chance which 99 times out of 100 he does we win that 1-0 everyone goes fucking tough but we got it done we found a way against Panama because we have got those players who can win us games which you'll see against Congo they'll find a way England will win that game I think pretty comfortably they'll find a way I think going forward obviously we've got the superstars in Birmingham are you not a little bit concerned defensively especially with the injuries now Not really No more concern Than I was at the start Was there not Some areas Of the Panama game Where they You just thought Have they got in behind That easily Obviously had that Offside goal Yeah but again Will Do you think Do you really think Mark Gay Is going to be absolutely At the top of his game Up for it Against Panama Or do you think Maybe when he plays Brazil He's going to be right Absolutely They are human They are going to have The difference in games Is going to affect them And how they're up for it And whether they're switched on they know they can play that Panama game at 60 % and win they know that so naturally they are going to have a different mindset against these better teams and again that's why Tuchel is there to manage that and make sure they are on it against the better teams I just think even more positively sorry Tom I was going to say even though defensively yeah we have a couple injuries now let's face it a lot of these players are like just like genuinely unbelievable in the Premier League so I think we're going to be alright and then also we didn't even play if Declan Rice We didn't even play with Declan Rice.
22That doesn't mean much because Germany went out to a Paraguay team. Germany are terrible. Come on, man. There's a penalty shoe out. Anything can happen on that. Germany and the... That's the exact same worry that I was at. There's 120 minutes of football before that. They played 120 minutes of football to get to a penalty shoe out. Do you think England are better than Germany? Way better. No, but the argument you made about the players, you can make up on Germany players. We did rotate a little bit. We didn't have Declan Rice. We had Jude Bellingham filling in the eight. It was phenomenal. you bring Jude back into the 10 Rice in midfield would probably short it up a little bit more no no I understand but your argument we will short it up even more Theo listen but your argument you made about realistically you look at these players in their domestic leagues and they're unbelievable you can say that about most players in the German squad so it's like it's not really by the way I back us to go through five but I'm saying that argument doesn't quite other than Kimmich and maybe Rudiger I don't think that Germany have got a player Germany haven't got a player who gets in our team well yeah I mean I do agree with that there's some course course over Bellingham well I would personally take them but it's not like they're miles off they're still like player for player better than yeah the point in lose making is obviously better teams on paper can be beaten by worse teams in this tournament yeah that's half of the last yeah no shit yeah of course yeah but you're saying you're saying there's not do you think that do you think that do you honestly think England could lose tomorrow I know but the round of 16 I don't I don't think there's a 1 % chance we don't beat Congo I think it's I think it's when you're looking at who's it Mexico probably yeah yeah I think that's the game where they could go one goal up and just sit back and defend they're not good enough get a bit Mexico aren't good enough the only thing we have an issue against Mexico is their home support and playing in Mexico and just trying to break them down but I'm telling you England will beat them I'm more worried about Ecuador Mexico haven't lost a World Cup game at the Azteca in like 36 years or something we haven't changed that brother they probably haven't played I mean it can't be 36 years because that's not every four years I think the stat is they've only lost two in 80 competitive games at the Azteca yeah look no one's saying that's going to be an easy game but it may not even be Mexico so I think people need to just relax on that for the minute but even so if we're worried about Mexico or Ecuador we might as well pack up and go home anyway because we're never going to win anything let's quickly mention how we do think obviously a couple of injuries a few people look tired how do you think Tommy T's going to line up against Congo it almost picks itself a little bit doesn't it Gordon back in for me I said it before when Rashford came on and scored a goal the mistake is to think oh let's just start him then and we saw he was pretty shit I know Gordon's been shit but at least if you do with that Rashford was awful Well, let's say he didn't have the same impact he's shown off the bench when he's coming against tired defence.
20Yeah, because he was playing against stretched or position with spacing behind. That's kind of like what Rashford feeds on. But when you start him, you lose that impact sub because Gordon isn't the same kind of... He's not a clinical finisher, so if you bring him on late, you lose that impact sub compared to Rashford. I prefer Rashford off the bench. But against Congo, I don't know. That's what I mean. we're going to have way more of the ball in that game if Conwell sit back again and defend and we can't get behind them you'd much rather Rashford was coming on with half an hour to go than Gordon yeah but the game plan isn't the same for that game yeah but then also Rashford's more likely to create half a yard and bang it in from 25 yards when you can't break them down he has got that magic in him where Gordon hasn't so I think realistically you play Rashford don't you just try and get an early goal I think so I think so but but then again obviously their wing backs do bomb on don't they Congo so maybe you do want but then do we really want to go into the game thinking oh I want my winger to track back and be defensive like we shouldn't be thinking about that we should be thinking I wouldn't even I wouldn't even be playing Royce and Anderson in this game together because I think that's too defensive for this game I'd be playing Bellingham in the 8 but I don't think he'll do that but I don't know I think either I think they'll win comfortably personally I'm not too worried do you think we'll see Harry Kane dropping deep Like the Croatia game?
38Yeah, that's what he does, isn't it? He does it. That's what he does. You know, he's going to... Not against Panama. He was. First off, he was doing it a lot and he was pissing me off because he kept giving the ball away. Kept trying to spray it 40 yards. But obviously, then he scored second off. It was the Ghana one where he didn't. Yeah, because he went back to it in Paris. Just keep behind because we had so much of the ball. Too busy, Alfredo. Moving to the back four then. Obviously, it's going to look a little different because both Quants and Rhys James are out so we can't set up with the preferred back four.
05Is Quants definitely out? Do we know? Apparently. Yeah, allegedly. Three injuries to the defence, man. So, what are we thinking, DJ Eld or Esri Concert right back? I'd like DJ Eld. I think DJ Eld. I'd like DJ Eld. I don't actually think DJ Eld's really done much wrong since... I'd play Spence, but I think he'll play Concert right back, I do. He doesn't tend... I feel like he doesn't like Spence at right back. I feel like he sees him as a left back, weirdly. Interesting. I don't know why though because he is naturally a right back isn't he? Yeah he is yeah What gives you that impression? All in the build up games he tends to play him on the left I know he come off the bench against Croatia on the right but Is that because James was just like such a solid selection like you're the right back and it's he so you wouldn't be expecting to play him But that's what I mean even that even with his squad it was Spence was his back up left back whereas Livermento was his back up right back do you know what I mean?
03And then he's brought Chalabria personally when Livermento got injured I'd have kept Spence as the right back and then called up a left back but he didn't he called up another right back so I feel like he sees Spence as the left back I don't know but I think it doesn't matter who plays against Congo we should be fine Yeah, right guys? Absolutely There were a number of obviously round of 32 games that has happened so far We've had Mexico not Mexico we've had South Africa lose to Canada in a last minute winner absolute scenes for Canada there. Home Nation winning. Thoughts on that game? Boring. Pretty boring game, but the goal was taken well at the end.
43I thought Alphonso Davies changed it as soon as he came on. You could just see he was just a different level to every player on the pitch. It felt like he was like... When he came on, yeah, everything was just him, right? It felt like it was this FIFA Pro Club player that has just come on and everyone's passing the ball. Everyone's trying to make everything go through him. Has he been injured? Is that what he's not been... I was going to say. He's not being full of fitness, has he? But no, he changed it. Yeah, that's a real positive for Canada going forward. They've got no chance. They fucking do, man.
14They've got Morocco. They've got no chance. Hey, look, home support does wonders, bro. Morocco are scary, by the way. Morocco are a good team. Really good team. They almost got knocked out. But that game's in Houston, though. What? The Morocco-Canada game's in Houston. How's that? It's not even home support because Canada didn't win their group. because they didn't win their group is that why because the USA and Mexico are guaranteed to play in the knockout well I think it's the rest of the games if they win until a certain point yeah Mexico the last game at the Azteca will be this Sunday then there's no more games in Mexico or Canada the rest are all in America that seems like bullshit yeah one of the nations only last until a certain point that's what I mean it's the most like fraudulent three way fucking hosting ever it's just basically America Brazil got through against Japan just about just about because I thought Japan arguably looked the better side during that game as soon as they went 1-0 up you said oh I've done it again I predicted the dark horses to go through and then they lost oh look guys tend to be going to win guys are you going to post that one you've had some terrible you thought Scotland were going to beat Brazil that is crazy my boy that's so bad do you know what he's doing he's just throwing shit at the wall he's throwing shit at the wall Scotland to beat Brazil is crazy but I didn't say Japan were going through at 1-0 also.
33Tom, I will say my dark horses went further than fucking Tom's turkey. My dark horses were Belgian by the way. Oh. And I called Germany to be the flops of the tournament. You've gone quiet Theo. You said Brazil were going to be flops. Theo's Brazil flopping. I didn't say Brazil, you said Brazil. You agreed with me. I still think Brazil will go out pretty early. No, you agreed with me and they're going out to Japan. Tom, question, question, because obviously Brazil, Japan are on all the side of the bracket. We had a little, debate whilst watching the footy yesterday which one of those teams would you have preferred to have faced out of who sorry you broke up brazil brazil japan uh i mean i think they're pretty similar but that's not see he hasn't even said an answer uh i'm saying i was saying it doesn't really matter who we'd get at that you said japan no i'm saying if what no no no i said if japan won the game four nil then obviously they're the better team than brazil no no no as they were one nil up you were like well see they're obviously the better team you did say that you were and you said japan i didn't say that you did say that i think brazil i think brazil would suit the way we play better but then they're still brazil and they've got players who can really hurt you so realistically you'd probably rather play japan but yeah i think i'm not worried about either one of them to be honest brazil are they are getting better as the tournament is going on though bruno g that midfield is too immobile man What do you mean taking off Casemiro for Fabinho?
02I'd expect us to run them over and they're fullbacks Jesus Yeah They are not that is not a good Brazil team but they have got firepower up front which always and they've got good subs who can come on but I wouldn't be worried about Brazil They've got a world class manager as well haven't they? Yeah this is what I said at half time I was like yeah you just forget that Ancelotti's managing them Did you see him singing the Brazilian national anthem? Yeah I did actually Yeah He's learnt himself the lyrics Yeah he's learnt himself a bit of budget, I guess. I kind of rate that, you know. Moving with you after that, Germany, Paragry, what a...
36I don't know. Do it, do it, do it, do it. Do it, Reeve, come on, do it. The people want to see it. We can play the tune in the middle of the video, mate. Paragry did such a fucking job on them. They played well, man. Yeah, they did. That centre-off blocked everything. Yeah. People played well. Yeah. By the way, the penalty shootout, Jesus, Jesus, that was very un-German. Although this German squad is just like, they're full of bluffers, aren't they? Other than Kimmich and Neuer, they're just full of Havertz, Volta Mardes. You don't deserve to be in that team. Do you want to know a really, really good stat about the penalty shootout?
15It's just one that's not on the screen. No, let me see my stat first. That's the first time they've ever lost one in a World Cup, isn't it? I've got a better stat. Shit, Tom just said my stat. Fuck. Yeah, I've got a better stat for you than that, lads. Okay. so Germany have missed or had a penalty saved four times in the history of the World Cup three of them happened yesterday when was the other one the other one was 1982 semi-finals Stilic did you know a bottle about them also it's the only ever time they've ever missed no I'm saying like this current German team see how mental that is that's mental I'm actually really disappointed to see them go out this early since Germany won it in 2014 knocked out in the group stages twice are now in the round of 32 so there's not won a World Cup knockout game since they won the World Cup.
00Good. Yeah, that's not good. Bloody hell. Fuck them. Doing better than Italy though. Auf Wiedersehen, lads. What does that mean? Dubai. Oh, ciao, ciao. Motherfucker. Ich spiele Fussball. How far do you think Paragraph are going to go, boys? Have they got like a... They've got France next. They've got France next. They might have Sweden. Do the job. They've got France next. Sweden might beat France. Let's not forget that. Do you have a bet on it? No. Oh, do you know what? It might happen. So the same logic you're applying to France is kind of what you're not rushing with England. I'm just having a fucking laugh, to be honest, mate.
37Do you know what? Sorry, no, no, no, fair enough. This German result's quite annoying for us then, because Germany might have had at least a 2 % chance about France. No, mate, the Germans, they're so bad. No, but they have a 2 % chance about France. Goretzka, by the way. How he's a footballer. and the one fan he's got he hates exactly that's why he's living he's living rent free he's just angry Goretzka's so bad every time he gets on the ball he's constantly looking for his name to be shouted must be the worst another team that got through Morocco made some absolutely great penalty shootouts I know we're not an amazing standard of penalties for some of them what I was going to say is like honestly like you can see how nervous they are of the pure amount of missed targets never mind missed penalties like the amount of missed targets from professional footballers imagine the fucking anxiety Do you think it's got anything to do with the fact that obviously it's still the first knockout round so going out in the round of 16 just sounds better than going out in the round of 32 and I know it sounds a bit weird what I'm saying here if you go out in the round of 32 you think we've made it quite alright we've got lost or go out in the round of 16 What are you saying here?
45Going out in the round of 16 which is normally the first knockout is better Yeah, we know. Even though technically it's actually, it's not because it's the first knockout round still. What are you on about? So it's more nerve-wracking because people missing penalties is so much worse. Lad, you just said, so essentially, basically going out in round of 16 is better than going out in the round of 32. Yeah, in previous tournaments. There's never been a round of 32? There's never been a round of 32. They're both still the first knockout round. No, but now there's more games. Okay, you don't understand what I'm saying.
18No, we do, but your point is essentially it's better to go out in a later round. No, it's the same round. It's the same round compared to the other ones. No, it's not. It's an extra game. It's not past tournaments. But it's the same round. It's still the first knockout round. No, it's not. No, it's different because there's less teams. No, the round of 16 this year isn't the first knockout round. Yeah, in previous tournaments it was. But what's that got to do with missing penalties? I guess maybe players are even more nervous because even though it's the first knockout round it sounds worse. That's not fair, Paul.
47It's the last thing they're thinking about. They'd have the same amount of nerves at any stage, man. It's a penalty shootout It's a fair point. No, because think about it. If the Germans went out in the round of 16, yeah, it's bad. But it's not as bad as the round of 32. Yeah, but they won't fucking care. It's bad either way. Yeah. Jonathan Tarr should not be skying a penalty like that regardless of when that is. They were in a penalty shootout against Paraguay. It was already bad. That could have been a semi-final. That's still really embarrassing. By the way, sorry. Paraguay almost tried to give it back to them.
16Oh no So fucking close They've got it on their third attempt though Yeah Only because Tar missed By the way that's got to be one of the worst penalties ever But it's still going Under the circumstances It's still going Yeah ECD up last minute winner Do you think the Dutch sort of switched off Equaliser It felt like a winner didn't it Do you think the Dutch sort of felt like it was job done And they switched off or do you think it was just a phenomenal cross It was a good cross it was a really good crowd where was Van Dijk and he took it well mate played French youth for six years and can we keep bringing Morocco he was under 19 euros didn't he this is what Morocco have made a name for themselves they're just never out of it they keep grafting they wear teams down they've got some good players though yeah they have by the way before that that Bouhadi I love that Bouhadi before that that Van de Ven tackle as Morocco were going through was fucking unbelievable that attack's insane so good kind of horny better than Marrero Own goal in the penalty shootout?
17Yeah. For Bruggen? I'll be honest, I've only watched the highlights, I haven't seen the penalty shootout. It looks like he kicks his heel back into it. Yeah. It's crazy. He does it to himself. He actually just backheels it in. He's a fucking useless person. I don't know why. What was he thinking? It was an accident. I reckon he thought in his head, like, it was going towards the goal, and he just automatically flinched. Boone's got quite a good record as a keeper in penalty shootout. Bono. It's Bono. Beautiful though. It was some poor penalties. Mate, by the way Who's one to just slap away? Somerville Somerville Mate, that's such a gamble From Bowne there It's because He's gone so early By the way All Somerville's got to do Is do a little stutter Look up and just pass it From the corner It's that easy Mate, every other guy Stutters and look up If Somerville did that It's a goal Yeah, but like He doesn't change his routine He's not going to change His entire run up routine He went Bonu.
15Did he see it? Bonu. Yeah, but he did. He made it look... He did a kepper. He mocked him. He mocked him. He literally just fucking slapped it away. It's a nod. It's a nod. Get out. Right now. It's the end of you and I... And then Saibori, the Rida Vise top goal scorer, putting the Dutch team out. It's pretty funny, isn't it? Fuck them. Yeah. Pretty ironic, eh? Morocco now. We've got Canada. So could we see Morocco in another semi-final? I'll double-check who the quarters are, but do you think they could go all the way? Their quarters will be France. Do you think that could be a little... They could beat France.
50Did you just say that Sabari is the top goal scorer that Edovisi did last year? He's Dutch golden boot, didn't he? No, Ueda was the Japanese striker. Oh, well they said it on commentary. He's got 10 more. Get your knowledge up, bro. Get your knowledge up. What did they say on commentary? Sabari is Moroccan, bro. He's good, by the way. Hasn't he moved somewhere? he's at PSV no no I swear someone's signed him the other day or is it a rumour 55 mil I saw on Twitter so it must be right Revo oh maybe he got player of the season then he's a good player maybe he got Troy Parrott got more I like him Troy Parrott was on 16 by the way last year that's a fucking beast mode attack oh player of the year sorry a really easy player of the year sorry man that's okay shout out to the commentary though yeah yeah shout out to the commentary so looking at this we've got the rest of the fixes up there is there any of that straight you is That's a potential banana skin Any that you really stand out for Today's is good Exciting for Ivory Coast Norway They're your dark horses aren't they Well they were my readjusted dark horses After I said Scotland would be my surprise package Jesus I had to pick a different one I'm looking forward to France, Sweden I'm convinced Croatia will knock Portugal out Belgium, Senegal is another good one That's kind of like I think that's a bit of a coin toss no?
08Yeah but I mean Belgium Hamid, New Zealand at the end. Was it New Zealand at the end? I mean, I think Senegal beat Belgium though. Senegal beat Belgium. Yeah, that's a toss-up that game. And then Salah playing the Socceroos. That's an easy game. Do you think Argentina get through against Cape Verde? Possibly. Yeah, Argentina's run is so fucking easy. They're in the fight. They're going to the semi. We're going to play them in the semi so if we get there. By the end of the game, Borzini might have more followers than the whole of Argentina. Yeah, you know he's got more followers than McElroy. Why is that a comparison though?
45I don't know, he's just one of the players that he listed off He's got more followers then Patrick Mahomes mate, champion of the world I must admit they're looking at it, I can't see many upsets Even like Bosnia won't have enough again Tom, this is football bro, this is soccer We looked at that and said, oh look, Paraguay Germany, no upset there Boom Upset Someone's going to get thrown into the water And guess what's going to be it? one of the games nice we touched on Argentina there Lionel Messi six goals his tournament already are we counting the sixth one yeah he scored a goal mate no bro it doesn't count sorry that keeper that Jordan keeper we're not going to let him off that first of all the Lo Celso goal what are you doing that's a wall for a reason second the Messi one fuck me do you fancy him I think you're being harsh on the Lo Celso one oh shut up mate did you see Messi's free kick Yeah, the Messi one was terrible.
41I think the La Salle's on. You've been a bit harsh. I'm not being harsh at all. I don't think he'd have saved that even if he didn't stand. What do you mean? He's got to stand still and he saves it. I don't think so. He'd have seen it too late. Honestly, it's a really... He wouldn't have seen it because the Argentinian players were in the wall and the way he hit it... Blood, are you for real? You've got to remember, though, that Peter Schmeichel has been talking about the difficulty of the ball. How powerful the ball is. Yeah. Extra speed on the ball this season. Yeah, yeah, yeah. To be fair, though, that let's say someone was so powerful he could have not saved it nice good ad lib uh to be fair at least ronaldo's back though guys yeah he's so back okay he's he's he's shit hot the good you're off right do you know what's crazy right messi's doing all this at the age that like when ronaldo's that age people use him in his age as an excuse for ronaldo messi's only like a messi's just destroying like ronaldo's he's probably scored more goals in this tournament alone by the end of than Ronaldo has in any World Cup.
39Do you know Gabriel Martinelli has more knockout goals in the World Cup than Ronaldo? Is it one? One. Damn. Harry Kane's now got more World Cup goals than Ronaldo. Yeah, was he on eight? Harry Kane's fucking good, mate. Harry Kane's got 11 and 14. I think Ronaldo's got like 10 and 20-odd. Is he on double digits? I thought he was on... Kane? No, no, no, Ronaldo. Ronaldo's on 10. Is he? We got a good one. We got a good one. I'm intrigued to know your opinion on this, Tom. so off camera last couple of days we've sort of been having the discussion about Kili Kili Mbappe right yeah if France go on to win the World Cup it's likely that Mbappe will probably finish with the golden boot become the all time World Cup top goal scorer three finals two World Cups all time top goal scorer is the could he become the greatest World Cup player of all time yeah yeah definitely oh fair we had a bit long of a result you've just explained all the reasons why I can't really add to that like I mean yeah three World Cups yeah I mean of course and Maradona but I mean Pelé played in a time when there was like eight teams and it's like I don't know he also only played like a minute and also when all said is and done like Mbappe's still got more tournaments to come like it'll probably be a bit out of the question yeah I think I think he finishes his career with three World Cups yeah the moment as he fucking should with our French team it's bullshit it's actually bullshit well they play Rabiot it's not like they're this undestructible team.
07He's their talking shit player to make us feel like we have a chance. Do you think, because obviously one of the biggest criticisms, a lot of the French fans didn't like him because they felt he was too negative. Do you think he's just released the handbrake a little bit this tournament? Who? Who did he? I'd hold your horses on that until they play a better team. I think he may go back to being quite pragmatic, but I don't know. Do you not think that the level... Sorry, Rief, go ahead. I was going to say, it's quite easy to release the handbrake when you've got that attack though isn't it yeah as long as you yeah especially when you've got Arabio and Tumene who are happy to just sit and protect I suppose yeah that front three you can just let Elisa you only need Elisa and Mbappe really that's enough yeah then you're throwing Dembele and Dewey in there and then you're like oh and then Bob Kohler as well oh and then Cherokee as well oh stop it it's just unfair isn't it so they are the team to beat then France yeah absolutely they're the team you expect another France-Argentine to final nope guess what bro it'll be a France-England final I'm still going to back Spain.
10Are they impressed you? They look a bit like Nath. They're professional. They're getting it done. They haven't conceded a goal. They're not doing that bad. Teams who tend to win the World Cup tend to get better. I won't be worried about the Spanish. That'll be their semi-final, right? That's their half of the bracket. Yeah, I think the winners are that winning. Austria, no mugs though, mate. Well, they are. I'm telling you they are. They're mugs. No. Whoa. I said it. You mugs. You know what, Tom? I think Austria beats Spain. Do you want to bet on that? I'll bet 20 euros. $20 on it. Why does everyone keep betting in euros?
49I don't know why. You want to have 20? Okay, I'll have Spain. You'll have Austria. Who goes through? Yeah,$20, man. 20 quid. Dollars. Okay. We're dollars now. We've not caught up since. Scotland got knocked out yeah over to you I mean it's just like I treat them as I treat San Marino it's cute it's like well done you've had a party you've gone out there well done but just keep the plane running because you are fucking useless and you don't belong here it's the easiest World Cup of all time to qualify and you still can't qualify even though you had a team can I ask Reeve yeah go on how upset are you bro not particularly obviously I'm I'm an England fan so why would I That's not what you said the other day.
34Well, let's not lie to the audience. You said you'd rather Scotland win it than England. If you consider the fact that they, what, scored their 1-0 win against Haiti, you were ranked 86 in the world. So you're actually pretending like you don't have any Scottish in you at the moment. Because the other day, mate, you were literally going Scotland, this, Scotland, that, I'm a quarter Scotland, this and that. And then all of a sudden, they're out of the tournament. You got all quiet. Can you look down the lens and address John McGinn? They were pathetic, though, weren't they? They actually were pathetic.
59Honestly, it fizzled out the comp. Like, shite, mate. yeah you don't deserve to go through if you can't you can't get more than three points and he resigns a month after signing your contract yeah four year contract he's thrown he's thrown his dummy out of the pram that's why I think I think he's fed up with I think he feels disrespected because he's like well I've the last three tournaments they've qualified for is that right or the last two or whichever and I mean really in fairness to him with that team what more could he have done I suppose but But yeah, I think he's had enough. Because his interviews as well, he was so like moody, wasn't he?
39Like he just didn't want to do them and stuff. I think he feels disrespected that people are saying he should have done more. And I think he's just gone, fuck you. All right. Well, on more of a positive note, lads, it's time to do our team of the tournament so far. Looking forward to hearing these. Yeah. Looking forward to hearing these for the first time. Looking forward to hearing these for the first time. That's right, guys. Are we preferencing team of the group stages? I think it's a better title now to say team of the tournament. Team of the tournament so far man. If you want to include just a group stage by all means do that.
10I have done that because I did that. But actually mine wouldn't really change I would say. I haven't changed mine just because we've already sent them off for the graphics. One of my players is now no longer in the tournament. It doesn't matter. They could still be in the team of the tournament. He played some games in it you know what I mean. Who would like to go first then, Reeve? I think you should go first. And let's do Deja Vu. Okay, Deja Vu. Why would it be Deja Vu? Just because of weird memory association with something that might have happened. Are you ready for my team in the tournament so far?
Read the full transcript
39Yes! In goal, it's the man with almost 18 million followers. Vizinha. What the hell? Yeah. That's a good pick. Yeah, and he got a brand deal as well, did you see? Nah. You haven't seen it? I'm saying I'm glad he's getting that money though. Mate, he got that bread, bro. Mate, he's going to be making some pee. Yeah, yeah, you keep getting brand deals. Hope you've got good management. If you don't, contact me. I'll be a manager. Oh, God. At right back, I've got Daniel Munoz. Yeah, Char Munoz. He's actually been classed. Yeah, he has been very good. He's been very good. At centre-backs, I've got Borges.
10Also, just to put in, is he proving that he can play in a back four then? And he's not just a wing-back? Because that was, I think everyone was saying, oh, will he get to the top club because he's only playing wing-back at Palace? Tell you something, if I'm Arsenal, I'm knocking on that door, mate. it could be one of them tournaments like we've discussed who's a player he's going to be he could get a move off the back actually Liverpool that Liverpool should go for him what Daniel Munoz yeah what to replace Englishman Connor Bradley Englishman Connor Bradley yeah my centre halves I've gone Borges Kit Verdi and Freeman I've been impressed by him I know he's been playing at like sort of right back centre back but it's like a 3-5 back 5-3 so he's a centre half left back I've got Anthony Robinson skip over the fact He's been playing right back He's a centre half though He's not really been a right back They have been playing Dest like right wing back No he's been playing Right wing man They've been playing A back four He's more right wing Nah yeah Theo is right It's been a bit like He's been very on The right hand side But he has technically Been centre half That's felt so wrong Here in that Theo's right Technically He's done it on a technicality Of a legend Who recommended you That felt weird Left back Anthony Robinson Okay I've got a midfield three of Bruno Gomera he's a latest Arsenal player yeah I can't I cannot wait for him to sign for Arsenal by the way it'll be the best day of my life he's going to have a great season at Newcastle no he's not yeah you're cooked mate you're so fucked you're so fucked to leave the show yeah genuinely if that does happen if oh Tom he's leaving how can Lewis ever talk about Newcastle ever again no honestly in the hypothetical world where Bruno G leaves right no go to Arsenal for Arsenal yeah even further yeah to Arsenal I honestly I struggle to imagine that world because I actually it brings me so much pain and frustration and anger it also means you can just never talk about transfers again at Newcastle because you know I wouldn't want to yeah no I'd agree I wouldn't want to but also on the flip side I'm still standing firm that he's definitely going to stay and it'll be the second season in a row that I'm right keep doubling down buddy 100 quid bet with you I've got 100 quid bet with Freezy Can I just say something Luke He's not going to go What happens if he Unfollows you By the way If he does stay You need to fucking Apologise to me Second in a row I've called it He's going to stay He's going to stay Amongst all the downfall Of our team At the moment Amongst everyone leaving I maintain He is the one Who definitely will stay You said he wouldn't even Go Real Madrid He's going to go Arsenal He will stay I promise you He will Luke just imagine this right Arsenal play Newcastle The next season Bruno G in the red He scores A last minute winner against Newcastle and just fucking celebrates on your face.
53He shushes the crowd. Shushes the crowd. And he pulls out a fedora. And turns to the camera and goes, no. Got a midfielder, yeah, Bruno G, Bellingham and Lionel Messi. Who would have thought that free midfielder? Not me. And then a front three are Vinicius Jun... Vinicius. Good player. him. He's actually playing really well to him. He's had a lot of shit this season but he's playing really well. Up front is Mbappe and on the right I've got Dembele. He scored in every group stage game didn't he? That's the Bruno G. So he had a good group stage. He had a very good game. That's why he's in my team mate.
38Nice. Alright then Lou. Hey there Will. I have got in goal I've got Vazenia. What? I never was seeing that coming. I've gone with a back three of centre-backs. Okay. Nice. Van Hecke, Kibassi. Wait, did you see him last night? Yeah, well. He literally just came straight out of Braveheart. His blonde hair turned his ginger hair, didn't he? He literally had a ginger fringe because of blood. Yeah, that's what he's about, man. Van Hecke, right in there. He's been class. Kibassi and then little Rogue One from DR Congo holding down Homelander himself in the biggest game of their nation's history, Chancel and Bemba.
16I'm confused because I thought it's easy to hold him down now. Yeah, but Chancellor Mbembe's level is not anywhere near one of the best players of all time, Theo. No, but you said that was his level. Yeah, you said it was his level. It is his level. So you've now gone against yourself. Well, there's other actual good players in that Portugal team. He had a really good game there. A stoppable force, but it's a moveable object. Why Sabati over Laporte, who I would say has probably been better? I just like Sabati more. Way more. I don't know. I think that's just like a player. And it's tip for tat, isn't it?
44Yeah, there's not much in it. really yeah I just like Kavassi more then in midfield right we got we got like a diamond four but you've also got three at the back of you yeah just literally all out of town we're going for the big penis what Bruno G we're going to make him sit alright nice then we're going to have Johan Mazambi from Switzerland game changer for them he'll be starred every game for the rest of the tournament now because he's fucking beast mode how many games has he started so far? He started one but came up off the bench and made a great impact. He's been great. He scored two for the huge goals.
24He's a great pick. He's picking all the... He's a great pick about your own pick. He is actually a great pick. You guys going for all these fucking... Do you know what? This is called ball knowledge. Get used to it, bitches. Bellingham and Messi and then up front I have Dembele Mbappe and Vinny Jr. Damn, same from free. That formation is crazy. By the way, we're going to sign that Switzerland player as well. Is that what you've got in your team in the tournament? I've done my research, lads. You said you're linked with Balogun now as well. We laughed at you and we said, oh, imagine Floyd Balogun going to Newcastle now.
58We were in for Demetra for a solid two days. I mean, he's had a good time. Yeah, we were in for him for two days and then we realised, oh, he costs money. Wait, which one? The one at Leeds or the one he's playing for Germany? Germany, yeah. We ain't getting him though because he costs money. yeah mine's kind of similar to Fias I suppose in goal I've got Volzinha right back I've got Daniel Munoz I've gone with centre back partnership of Kubasi just like Lu and then Van Dijk RIP man out of the tourney shame and then left back Cucurella midfield three is Bruner G Messi and Bellingham go on I just don't I know Spain haven't conceded right but are you just not a bit like yeah I haven't put any Spanish players in well He didn't score, score.
44Kukarela? He produced an own goal in the 4-0. He's had three clean sheets. There's no standout left back. They got an own goal? No, I mean, he shot. Why is that your Anthony Robinson pick such a clearer... I think left back's probably the hardest position to point out. I'd be more impressed by the USA than Spain. Really? I'm getting irritated by your love for the USA. Defensively, three clean sheets is a good argument to put the left back of that team in. Yeah, but the USA... They've not really played anyone. Neither have the USA. The USA lost to Turkey. Yeah, but are you not impressed by the USA?
18We've literally all been talking for the last two weeks. No, no, no. You're getting way too pro-USA. I'm not impressed by them. Not much. Even when we talk to fans out and about, you're like, you can go all the way, and I'm sat there looking at you like, what are you on? Will thinks the USA are going to win the World Cup before England, mate. So I'm not having it from you. Yeah, that's crazy, mate. That's not true. I said I think they're going to win the World Cup in the next 30, 40 years. And then you said, I don't think England will, so that basically means that USA going to win before England maybe then yeah we'll see won't we did I say Mimicfield no Bruner G Messi and Jude Bellingham and then a front three of Dembele and Mbappe and Erling Haaland guys Erling Braut Haaland Erling Braut Haaland 4-2 he didn't even play the third I'm surprised two of you have got Dembele I think he's only had one good game what Dembele's been good bro he's been good in one game he was terrible against Senegal like actually so so bad I can't play Harland on the right way you've got three strikers
15I mean I could play I could literally play diamond with Harland and a Bappe up top but we're gonna play the front three it doesn't really matter. No Jonathan David that's crazy. Who's on right wing? Well being Dembele. This is what I'm confused about. So you've basically got two central and then a right winger out there. So where's your left winger? Where's your left winger? You've got three 10s if we're doing that. Yeah but mine actually, mine actually, no no I'm playing them in an 8. Mine's a diamond. It's not a grade formation, but it makes... I could do diamond then. I'd do diamond. Why not?
43Bruno G, Messi, Bellingham, Dembele, Haaland and Mbappe. Why not? Nah, he changed his team. So you've got five central players. What? So you've got... Yeah. Well, it'd be six, wouldn't it? Two strikers are their central too. One, two... You're just picking for... No, I was just curious because the way you listed it, it sounded like Haaland was on the left wing. No, Haaland's in the middle. Okay. Does it matter? No, it doesn't. It does. Tom, what's your team? I've gone. Vazini in goal same as everyone Munoz Upamakano Van Hecker Robinson Nathan Saliba Bellingham Ismail Assar Messi Haaland Mbappe Sar interesting Ismail Assar I think Sar's been excellent in a really tough group yeah they have had a rough start I think he's been their standout player which I probably I kind of didn't expect I know he's old but I always think like Mane's their kind of talisman but I think he's been quite poor but Sar's been even in the Norway game dragged him back into it didn't he?
38I just think he's been I've been really dragged him back into it to still lose but he can't do it on himself can he? superior player match and goal from the last week say that again superior match superior goal superior player is that what you're on about? yeah the superior goal for me would be Isidore yeah it's Isidore their level of power the sheer power on that was insane techniques unreal I'm going to go for the got to be Messi as well yeah superior player Lionel Messi Lionel Messi I'll go goal I'll go for the New Zealand goal Superior player The last week Is Isman Dembele though Isn't it First time Patrick Superior player of the tournament Of the tournament Yeah it's Messi I thought you meant Of the last round of games Yeah I'd go Messi What's your favourite game?
26Game I really liked I'll tell you what Was really good But there just wasn't Colombia-Portugal Was a really good game The 0-0 Yeah Even though it was no-no But I don't know I'm trying to think For me I think it might be Croatia England still I think yeah Bias Yeah I think I'll go with that Morocco Haiti was a good watch Yeah Morocco Haiti was a good Good watch I didn't watch that I watched the other one At the time Who was it Was it France France Norway Yeah Which was a bit of a letdown Netherlands Japan was a good game France Norway was alright In terms of a letdown In terms of Haaland France Norway wasn't even on The same day as that I thought it was They played at the same time Didn't they It was the last game Do you mean Scotland-Brazil?
08Well, yeah, sorry. Yeah, whichever group, the same game. Yeah, Scotland-Brazil. That was the last game of the groups, wasn't it? Yeah. Yeah, yeah. In Premier League news, though, Maresco's been announced at Manchester City here and it's all kicked off at Chelsea because they've said, all right. He was speaking to us in August. Yeah, can I see it? He's been tapping up. He's been cheating on us. And guess what? I need boyfriend Jabby Alonso who's got a bigger willy than Maresca. You've stolen my entire joke from last pod and that's not happening. Wait, which pod? The pod that didn't happen. He literally came in and stole my whole line.
50It's tough to not do that. Oh no, Lewis. Now your comedy career is over. I'm actually trying to make us a comedian as well so it's not funny. You don't do that in the industry. I'm a bodybuilding comedian. I'm going to be the first ever bodybuilding comedian. Yeah. No, it is a bit cringing it from them. It looks like they're just proper not over it. And I think he came out and made his own statement as well. Did you see Morescu's statement? No, what did he say? He's basically saying, sorry, but we've got to want to go Man City. It's all just like, lad, just fuck off. Who actually cares as well?
23We all know what happened. We don't need statements. Also, not only are Arsenal getting Bruno G, boys, we're also getting Alex Scott. Yeah. Hell yeah. Yeah, it's going to be pre-base mode. Anyways, guys, on that breaking news that I've just told you all, make sure you like and subscribe. Make sure you hit the subscribe button because we're trying to hit 400 ,000 subscribers.
