In short
Birthday anxiety and “true gray” (emotional/mental in-between states); premenstrual mood; facial aging vs looking sad; skincare and facial tension; wellness routines; migraines and possible spontaneous healing; wellness/beauty tech and supplements; plus a prayer about leaving “unlit tangles.”
Guests
None. Hosts are Kate Berlant and Jacqueline Novak (POOG podcast).
Key claims
Birthdays can trigger a “spell” of anxiety that lifts once the day passes; “aging” messaging misses the point—people fear looking sad/gargoyle-like, not just old; thicker moisturizers and facialist microcurrent/relaxation help dryness and tension; releasing scalp/occipital tension may improve facial tension; migraines have stopped recently without new meds, possibly linked to emotional shifts, magnesium/supplement stacks, and lifestyle changes; “no social media for a month” is part of recovery.
Notable examples
Assembling a catio screen door; spider catching a moth/butterfly; considering botox; trying a fascia blaster; watching The Americans (Noah Emmerich, Felicity/“Russell and Reese”); Clarissa Pinkola Estés “Prayer to See.”

0:08Kate Berlant:Two uncamable intellects.
0:09Jacqueline Novak:This is our hobby. This is our hell. This is our naked desire for free products. This is POOG. Today's topic, loosely speaking. True gray. Confetti.
0:19Kate Berlant:Know your bitch.
0:23Jacqueline Novak:hello happy birthday to you happy birthday to you happy birthday dear jacklyn That's an easy song. Happy birthday to you. Thank you. We're getting margaritas.
0:46Kate Berlant:We're going to have chips and guap. We're going to sit and we'll laugh. Being with friends. And many more. Imagine to be fully premenstrual. Me too. On one's birthday. No, I have landed. Okay. Or you've landed. But when you go, wow, I survived my own birthday while getting through the day while it's pretty incredible.
1:13Jacqueline Novak:I'm going to drop any day. And I, this morning I was on a walk with my partner and I said, I was like, you know, it's interesting. I'm feeling really angry.
1:20Kate Berlant:Oh, wait, look, toilet in the shot. That's just too much, right?
1:23Jacqueline Novak:Wait, I don't see it. Oh, yeah. Hold on. While you go close the door, I'll tell the listener, my spider caught something huge. I'm looking over. My spider caught. again i was out when she actually caught it but it looks it's definitely a like a butterfly which is devastating a winged maybe a moth or maybe a small butterfly whipped into the cocoon and i just googled what do spiders do with their prey and apparently they drag they'll capture and drag it back to secure home base i honestly i'm not sure i realized they left the web they leave the web i kind of thought they just lay in wait she's been hanging out in the center but i just walk out here and i go holy shit it's the biggest thing she's caught so far wow anyway back to your birthday i did this is called know your bitch because i did not pressure you i texted jack for her birthday and i said hey but any you want to get together you want to get dinner and jacklyn was like thank you for i forgot what you said you're like because you're like i called
2:28Kate Berlant:off till now because like a week and a half ago you're talking about and I was like I'm not you know it's just the fundamental my fundamental thing is like I'm unprepared for like three hours from now so it's like I'm constantly outrunning the future whereas you are put at ease by planning it yeah and your mood lifts by having plans in the future yeah um it's like it's like almost anyway anyway but but so i was like thankful that i didn't have to kind of suffer birthday anxiety all week in the form of hey you got any plans yet it was like oh no i'm not thinking about it during it's almost like get through the birthday itself now the spell is gone then i can think about i was like maybe next week i'll put i'll put together an event imagine right days later some people do that point is most people do that I mean it's fine if you don't no but I mean it's fine if you don't it's not like I've asked anyway know your bitch and I go thank you for you know not bringing it upon me and then you know so it was so great I think I've said this before but but last year at like midnight I was like Chris and I were on the phone with you know our friend Paul who I always talk about on here and and um the one who said the YSLs were an A-minus and we didn't have to be that bad upset when we didn't get the Ferragamos even though we ran back.
3:48Kate Berlant:Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So we were on Paul and he was like, yeah, he was like, he was like, maybe now you have 365 days to relax, like until the next one kind of, you know, and it's like, you know, oh, I'm still working on my birthday post because last year when I was in London in a raging, you know, mood. And I mean, it's just, it's a modern, you know, I don't even want to say the word modern. It's a spell, as Carolyn Mace would say, the insanity of the birthday. It's absolutely deranged. Yeah, right. That we're sensitive about our birthday, that we're sensitive about the birthday. We don't care. We do care.
4:27Kate Berlant:It's like, what? And I think it's just that it's one of the most profound beaten into you, you know, from the time you're three, someone grabbing you and saying it's your birthday it's your birthday tomorrow's your birthday today's your birthday you're the birthday next week's your birthday what are you gonna do for your birthday
4:43Jacqueline Novak:okay how's your birthday happy birthday when you say your birthday and your birthday was about three
4:48Kate Berlant:and a half weeks ago you're like happy birthday oh yeah this is what happened by the way okay i was on a zoom and the camera's so wide and chris snuck in while i was on a meeting and i he thinks he's off camera and so i'm just acknowledging and they were like they like screamed there's like a man in
5:02Jacqueline Novak:the background that's so funny to be clear to the listener there's a mirror propped up so you can see well behind Jacqueline anyway the spell of the birthday but last year I posted from London
5:11Kate Berlant:a birthday post raging emotion I was like I'm screaming like the c-word out of a cab just like arbitrarily high emotion yeah yeah point is I owe them a birthday post this year I was very chill I was like nothing whatever just I just want to flow through my day I assembled a catio screen door for boo I just you know I just chilled and then I don't know it whatever anyway but I'll see
5:34Jacqueline Novak:you tonight but but go on go on sorry I was gonna say it's weird that you have there have to claim you're either a birthday princess mine's my birthday or you have to be I don't care
5:43Kate Berlant:no right right the reality somewhere in the middle we can't tolerate those in-betweens can we and yet no we can't that's where we live the gray and yet the gray or the kind of kind of flickering black and white black and white black and white flickering to produce a kind of experience of gray right yeah yeah you know is it true gray or is it it's hard to say or is that a wild toggling have you seen have you seen there's a you know it's one of these illusions that the brain produces okay saw this on instagram once a video where i'm trying to remember how they do this but it's like they rapidly show pictures of faces okay and the faces are normal but and then they have a dot like over to the side or they're upside down i forgot there's something kind of and they're just like focus on the green dot you know in the corner okay and the faces flash i hate that kind of shit and they go it scares me yeah and then it's a thing the brain does for i forget why maybe it has something to do with peripheral danger i don't know but it distorts the faces in a way where you it looks like no that they put pictures of monsters there they switched it out from oh my god no i want to see that actually now cover the now cover you know watch it again and cover the green dot and it is regular it's really cool i actually would like to see that i do like those things put it in the newsletter a big good thing drop in the newsletter wasn't there a thing i sent you
7:10Jacqueline Novak:that was like confetti like if you hold one you close one eye and then you put it close to your phone it looked like snow or something i don't know i yeah that one didn't work for me i couldn't figure out what's happening it weirdly worked but i uh i yeah i texted you because i go maybe it's time for me to try a little botox oh yeah maybe it's time but jumi my you know the facialist that i'm so blessed to to see on occasion when i was grumpy talking about pre-master like everyone looks like shit yeah totally no totally i was just like everyone looks like shit like jumi song who's a genius here in los angeles who a japanese gorgeous microcurrent facial and jimmy who i really trust with my life trust with her with my life yeah beautiful so beautiful so calm she's like no yeah and which i was like so relieved because i've gone to other people who are like we could do this and we could do that you know and i leave scared right she's literally like take a bath relax she's what were you saying 11s or something yeah or just kind of like oh and all of that stuff i but a week i have to say something a week of dryness you and i were together on an incredible trip that we'll be exploring i took a vanicream moisturizer which i'm sorry wasn't rich enough it was too thin and you're you're in the sun you're in the pool you know it's drying even if you're i mean you're and you're in such a hot climate you think oh i don't
8:31Kate Berlant:need a thick moisturizer yes you do desert climate kind of yeah and then like and then a week later
8:36Jacqueline Novak:you're sobbing and like you know crying it just ages you instantly and i really feel the dryness being away from my, I'm sorry, my Dew Skin Instant Angel moisturizer. I really -
8:48Kate Berlant:Well, Instant Angel is very, you know, the emollient, right?
8:52Jacqueline Novak:Yeah.
8:54Kate Berlant:I don't even know if that's what I mean, but I think it is. You know, that's that, you know, thick. And you do that atop, you let, I don't know, an essence or that thin gel - An essence and then the instant.
9:04Jacqueline Novak:And then lock with the instant. Land the instant. I feel like I'm already, my skin is better from just moisturizing for a few days. Exactly. I have to figure out this line, this marionette line, this here. Well, this is all tension. So let's play a game. It's tension.
9:18Kate Berlant:Oh, my God. It's tension. By the way, let's play a game, okay? Or you're not going to want to stick your fingers in your mouth probably. Not right now. But, all right, try this one. I'll do a buckle. Oh, my gosh. On the outside and feel it. You can feel the muscular tension. I know. No, I know it is. Grab it even down here, okay, right where you're talking. And then, yeah, you feel all around. You go. Well, by the way. I'm actually surprised there isn't more heat application around muscle to the face. You know, okay, guys. Well, Jimmy goes into your mouth. Melt it.
9:48Jacqueline Novak:Yeah, yeah. You know what I got? A fascia blaster. I knew you'd be excited. $10. Are you serious? And for the skull. Because I saw a whole thing.
9:55Kate Berlant:Yeah, a headache.
9:56Jacqueline Novak:The scalp tension. Yes, yes. Oh.
9:59Kate Berlant:It's pulling on the face. So you release the scalp. You got it. You release the soul. Well, what's her name? And you release her. So what's her name? Beauty Anastasia. Anastasia. who I really like want to like just do one of her classes I just like I don't think she's rules because I don't know I have to know she talked about her well I hope he acknowledged her because she actually like went and did real study no he loves her like okay good she went and did real study with this guy like this like yeah okay and okay so this this is not a great the great angle okay so this is like this is like I told you it's all angles back getting okay i know but i just want to be clear if this should not looks like she's getting birthday head right now this should not be in any video okay okay okay so so anyway but she does the whole um what do they always say there's a there's like an interesting word for it they're like um oh aponeurosis because it just sounds like ridiculous but anyway anyway like yeah like You release that whole thing, man.
11:02Kate Berlant:I got it. I got it. I got it. I got it. The$10 fascial thing.
11:07Jacqueline Novak:I'll show it. We'll drop it in the newsletter. It feels fucking good. It feels so good. Just rolling it and putting it on the, what's it called? The occipital? Yeah.
11:17Kate Berlant:Jinx. Feels so good. I wonder if it's occipital because it is Occidental College. I think it is like ox. I don't know. Anyway. I'm so excited. I'm hanging from my own clavicles right now. Look. Oh, yeah. But I want to – oh, you know what? Guess what? Get away. I'll sit up, okay? Blow jump's over now. Okay. I'll sit. You can go.
11:41Jacqueline Novak:Yeah, yeah, yeah. She came.
11:43Kate Berlant:Okay. Yeah. So, you know what I want to do in Los Angeles? What? Silks. Aerial silks. I want to hang from silks, okay?
11:54Jacqueline Novak:I know I'll love it. You know what I'm talking about? Sorry, do. Doing yoga hanging in a film? No, no, I did. Well, you see, I don't love that. That's very you. I did happen to do a wall yoga class with Jacqueline. Yes. Where she was hanging upside down from the straps. I was really impressed. It's not, it's just for whatever reason, I kind of like it. It scares me. I have a trust issue with the wall. I feel like it's going to pop out. I know that it won't, but. I saw you trusting the wall. I was trusting the wall, yeah.
12:20Kate Berlant:Wow, she's really going for it.
12:21Jacqueline Novak:Yeah, I was trusting. I mean, you got to trust the wall just as you trust the floor, right? You know what I was having? and again this is against I know you don't like this but I just now I have this fantasy I was like
12:32Kate Berlant:can't imagine what I don't like it's coming my way
12:35Jacqueline Novak:well I got excited knowing me knowing some stuff we've been doing lately what do you think I'd push you to do in the next few days maybe hike? yep

13:51Kate Berlant:No, I just want to make a note later to remind you to talk about her facial expression. I saw Kate make recently. And it went like this. Out of context, out of context, Kate. Oh yeah. Out of context, Kate.
14:01Jacqueline Novak:Okay.
14:02Kate Berlant:Okay.
14:05Jacqueline Novak:But will you remember to tell the story dinner tonight?
14:08Kate Berlant:I am actually. I've already been planning it. I've already been planning it.
14:11Jacqueline Novak:Dinner tonight. I'm already aware. I get the email.
14:16Kate Berlant:6 a.m. You're like, you're like dinner. You're so, you know,
14:21Jacqueline Novak:I talked to Jacqueline at 8 50 this morning. 6 p.m. Question mark. Because I woke up getting so excited for dinner. Yeah, you're like, margaritas.
14:31Kate Berlant:There is nothing quite like the moment when the margaritas arrive. Yeah. So, no, but I was going to go to a birthday showing of Insidious, but I got too freaking tired. And, yeah, I don't know if, I mean, Insidious is, you know, I love the Insidious franchise. I've been singing its praises. Never seen it.
14:51Jacqueline Novak:I do think I've been very scared, but I do think we should see other mommy in theaters.
14:56Kate Berlant:Definitely. Considering I screamed, folks. I repeat, I screamed and my whole body jumped during the trailer.
15:05Jacqueline Novak:For other mommy, which we saw.
15:08Kate Berlant:This is what I'm trying to say. This is why horror matters. Well, I was thinking of you.
15:13Jacqueline Novak:I'll tell you what matters. The television show, The Americans, which I've heard about for years. Have you watched it?
15:18Kate Berlant:How dare you?
15:19Jacqueline Novak:How dare you? Okay. Okay, okay, okay. Okay. I am the Americans. Okay, okay. I love it. I love it. So, Stan Beeman. I would be, I'm only on episode three. Played by Noah Emmerich. I'm only on episode three. He's probably not Stan Beeman.
15:30Kate Berlant:He's the neighbor. Anyway. Okay. Oh, he's fabulous. I mean, I think he's from Biggest Truman Show. I go, you tell me you love Felicity, okay? You say she's our greatest actress. Well, hello. Welcome to the Americans. Okay. Russell to me. And I said - Russell and Reese.
15:44Jacqueline Novak:Russell and Reese. I said last night. I said last night. Unmatched. Her voice is - Okay. Her voice is in my blood. Yeah.
15:51Kate Berlant:I hear her talk on a somatic level.
15:54Jacqueline Novak:I change. Felicity, I was exactly of age. Yeah. Phenomenal show. Phenomenal performance. She is one of the most beautiful women that's ever existed. I happened to be at the New York, at Lincoln Center. You saw her live? Seeing Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent, perform at the Philharmonic. Beautiful show. Yes. And rushing through the lobby. Who walks towards me? Carrie. And I, she is a big one for me.
16:17Kate Berlant:You don't mean, do you mean, wait, wait. did you talk to her?
16:20Jacqueline Novak:no oh no walks towards you on the way to the bathroom so they're just like in the crowd yeah yeah yeah no she comes up to me she goes I'm a hag no but she is so it happens folks listen here's a term I hate aging gracefully right yeah because fuck off right yeah fuck off go to hell actually I have a lot to say about that but listen okay okay because I've seen some but she is so beautiful and she's someone I don't know what's going on she looks like herself yeah she looks like yes, this is, this is nature. She looks like a piece of nature, like a beautiful piece of nature. Which is what women, which is what we all should strive for.
17:00Jacqueline Novak:But you know, it's like, she's undergoing the natural process of life. I'm sure she's getting the best fucking facials and whatever the fuck shit you can get on this, on God's green earth. But I just feel excited when people, and I do think everyone should read the Gia Tolentino wrote a fabulous piece on, um, like instagram face and kind of plastic surgery and all this and she's you know i love her um i
17:23Kate Berlant:haven't read that but of course i've read stuff it's like you know it's like when you get to the like uh the secondary media before it's like i'm on like in like sub stack and it's like referencing the thing i haven't even gotten to the oh of course it's like referencing trick mirror yeah yeah but it's like no i'm not saying you're referencing it i i'm just saying i'm saying the article i know what you're saying oh so so of course but you know i saw something recently
17:49Jacqueline Novak:and there were two things there were two things where you know because this is like very me right
17:54Kate Berlant:you know how sometimes i'm very very protective of like like i really and i just i have to follow my own soul right like i don't like always to like say the name even if it's like a celebrity right
18:04Jacqueline Novak:wait what do you mean though well i'm about to tell just i'm about to acknowledge like something
18:08Kate Berlant:I saw in the news or whatever okay sure and like or or something I saw like a celebrity say and I just don't want to be talking about them on the podcast I want to talk about what they said okay
18:18Jacqueline Novak:so if you know you know and if you know you know all right yeah I saw someone you know doing a
18:24Kate Berlant:come clean you know talk talk you know as is the trend now right everyone talks about this is what I do yeah and you know they and now and they it's like you know the new thing seems to be get your facelift and get your personal assay out there right it's or whatever get the facelift and do the do the and say you know i never thought i'd do it right it's it's almost right there's this whole kind of so you know who you're talking about yeah keep going i'm not but there's so many at this point that i'm actually like yeah it's borderline no no it's good no it's trying to throw you off the set you have to do the press release about the thing here here's here's it's not an objection.
19:03Kate Berlant:I just want to acknowledge that, you know, you go, I'm a feminist. I want to raise my children to believe blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And then it comes the butt. Right. And then you go, here's the good stuff. Right. What's coming after the butt. Right. What is the, and it's, it's not, you know, and I hear this from other people. Okay. Two. It's not that I look old and I don't like that I look old. It's that I look sad.
19:28Jacqueline Novak:Tired. No, no, more sad.
19:30Kate Berlant:Okay. Like, So they're like saying like, you know, it's just that like, I look like, you know, when my face is, and it's kind of like to me like, yeah, that's what looking old looks like. Yeah, it pulls your face down. It's not because it's fundamentally like, it's like, you know what it is exactly, here's the metaphor I'm looking for. Okay. It's like in the jerk, like, like Steve Martin. It's like, it's like when he's, I'm not upset we lost the money. It's all the stuff or whatever. I'm doing a lot. Yeah. yeah but where you're saying the same it's the same thing right yes it's like it's that's yeah that's why people don't like it if if looking old meant turn you know it's not about looking old it's about looking sad if looking old meant suddenly your face turned into someone else's face okay a gorgeous other person's face you know like you're not like i'm not myself anymore right it's like yeah anyway it's just so it's kind of this it's god ricky lake has a good work
20:28Jacqueline Novak:are you poking around or no no no my look my arms are well what's interesting i'm just reflecting imagine she did she did my arms are crossed because a new thing she did a big here's my plastic surgeon and here's what i did and she takes fatty 15 i remember or was it 13 um and i remember sorry but oh my god this is just i was like i wish you could see i'm gonna stop talking about it guys but my spider is wildly spinning what has to be a moth or a small butterfly like this wrapping it up into a wrapping it up into this cocoon it's just the force with which it's like speed bag oh my god oh my god it's unbelievable yeah it's like by the way i'm
21:04Kate Berlant:thinking of going to boxing i'll go with you i wonder if i could shoot it from here by the way three days three days back on the stimulant aerial silks and boxing are on the table suddenly oh my god i'm getting footage i'm getting footage it's kind of grainy oh my god but it'll give you
21:18Jacqueline Novak:an idea trigger warning for the arachnophobes okay before we um yeah okay I do think you'll be excited to see it. Oh my God. Look at her go. Yes, bitch. Go, go.
21:30Kate Berlant:Whoa. Imagine you found out the spider wasn't my hand. Okay. Aren't they all girls? No, no. I mean, the web girls are. The web girls I think are.
21:40Jacqueline Novak:Yeah.

26:00Jacqueline Novak:Electrolytes are key. Salt is life. Element is salt, but it's also delicious, addictively so. Lemonade, probably my favorite flavor. Watermelon, raspberry. I don't want to brag, that I was hung over today. And guess what? I actually hear it in my voice, the gravel. I did a pink lemonade element. It was fabulous. Now they're doing Element Lemonade Ice Tea.
26:28Kate Berlant:Lemonade Ice Tea delivers Element's science-backed electrolyte formulation, plus naturally occurring caffeine, 50 milligrams, L-theanine, and polyphenols for a powerful blend of antioxidants. What are we talking about? Well, it's a formula they've designed to support a healthy lifestyle without hammering those adrenals or just destroying sleep.
26:52Jacqueline Novak:Unbelievable. Caffeine being added to Element. I stopped in my tracks. Kate, you realize that caffeine doesn't actually give you energy, right? I love caffeine, but as you know, you've got to be careful with the way you're ingesting caffeine.
27:07Kate Berlant:No, it just blocks the receptors that make you feel tired. That's a painful truth and one that, well, I guess Element is interested in helping us navigate. The combination of the hydration with the electrolytes and Element with the caffeine stabilizes you.
27:24Jacqueline Novak:And it can fit into your day in an easy way versus your usual ways that you go about getting coffee or procuring caffeine.
27:33Kate Berlant:Look, I drink element because it all started with all the sweating and noticing that I felt better when I had an electrolyte drink during a deep workout or a sauna session.
27:44Jacqueline Novak:Isolated caffeine, the kind that's in a lot of energy drinks, hits harder and drops faster because there is just nothing there to smooth the curve. Tea, however, works differently. The caffeine comes bundled with L-theanine and polyphenols. And the way that it exists like that naturally in the world is the point. That's what gives you a noticeably steadier feeling. There's less of a spike and less of a drop.
28:10Kate Berlant:Element Lemonade Iced Tea uses a full black tea extract. No, not isolated caffeine. Plus a meaningful dose of electrolytes free of sugar, artificial flavors, or other dodgy ingredients.
28:22Jacqueline Novak:It's built on the same formula as Element's core drink mix, sodium, potassium, and magnesium at levels shown to support optimal hydration. Trusted by Stanford neuroscientists, functional nutritionists, and professional athletes across the NFL, NBA, NHL, and CrossFit.
28:37Kate Berlant:Get a free eight-count sample pack of Element's most popular drink mix flavors with any purchase of element.com slash poog. Find your favorite flavor or share with a friend, and they have a no-questions-asked refund policy. Try Element and see how you feel. If for any reason you're not satisfied, well, Element's customer service team will take care of you.
29:01Jacqueline Novak:So I'm just back on the same point from before.
29:03Kate Berlant:I'm just thinking, but it's like, it's like, it's not that I have a problem with, with, with looking old. I just don't want to look like a gargoyle.
29:09Jacqueline Novak:Yeah. You know, you know, it's like, yeah, it's like, that's what it is.
29:13Kate Berlant:I just don't want, you know, it's just, but beauty, like, you know. Vivian Westwood. It's exhausting when you're about to state what couldn't be more of a cliche, right? But these cliches, you have to unpack, you have to go deeper, okay, and ask yourself what, because they mean different. Okay, here we go. Here's what I'm trying to say. The disconnect we have. Okay, I've got it. It might take a few sentences, all right, to find my way. Because then I lost it. All right. So if someone says like age is beautiful. Okay. Like an aging face is beautiful. Right. I think like we need to see the beauty.
29:55Kate Berlant:Okay. And the aging face. All that. Right. Smile lines are beautiful. All this. There's a condescension and there's a, oh, we're upsetting the thing. We all know it looks bad. And that's why we're saying actually there's beauty in it. Okay. Shit. Okay. Yeah. that's not it okay that's like um that that ain't it okay that that's not what we need that's annoying all right what about actually perceiving literal beauty like going no that's beautiful I don't mean that's beautiful because it's hideous and hideousness has meaning you see what I'm saying there's a big difference there's like like just to take it out of the realm of of women and whatever consider my cat blossom you know also known as snoozer back in the day snook you know when she was 23 right and looked elderly unbelievable she the beauty okay the beat the flat out beauty it was literally its own beauty it was not a yes like a hashtag brave you know
31:02Jacqueline Novak:what i mean like oh i felt just seeing my my 95 year old aunt like beauty it's a specific
31:10Kate Berlant:it's a specific type of beauty yeah and it's beauty nonetheless and like you know it just it's not the you know tiara on the you know you know the isn't she gorgeous yeah and it's it's not it's like you know i'm actually saying it's beautiful
31:28Jacqueline Novak:It's not post-chimp attack. You're reducing to one pointer finger and one tooth, and they put a tiara on you and go, isn't she? Oh, she looks beautiful.
31:39Kate Berlant:That's rude.
31:40Jacqueline Novak:That's, yeah.
31:42Kate Berlant:That's, there's so much, there's something like that happening recently where I felt that. I felt much like the tooth and the index finger, you know, and by the way, higher dose blanket, I come in so I wake up early in the morning and I decide I'm gonna do the stack okay of the p.m.f. Matt right these are some of our biggest you're gonna lay on the p.m.f. and then and then and then lay the blanket on top of me you did it because they actually show that on the thing I did it last night and then I sort of fell asleep like that and then like stumbled to bed but then I think I must have kicked it on really late to the 12 hour so the p.m.f.
32:17Kate Berlant:Matt was was on all night on
32:19Jacqueline Novak:very low heat which is fine yeah I come in booze laying on it okay in the morning and it's like
32:25Kate Berlant:the sweetest thing because it's like you know he found it right like he's using he found it he recognized what was up yeah and then i turned on the ions for him because he was he was only
32:35Jacqueline Novak:you know the ions why would you turn off ions why would you not have ions on it's the the only thing
32:41Kate Berlant:that runs automatically for 12 hours or three hours or one is the heat setting so i couldn't i had it on the night before it that shuts off quicker i would have had ions on for him and he was welcome to turn them on himself by the way i've been training him with my clicker oh you've seen it right so now i get him to click here treat here so now i hold the clicker and he taps my no yeah my pa i thought i think i sent it to you you're in the mid system stuff because i didn't get the reaction oh yeah i didn't understand what was going on no yeah yeah
33:09Jacqueline Novak:that's why you know you know i gotta video it more uh look i'm completely turned around in a full trunk recording turn stretch yeah what if we this is just just for fun okay hold on on imagine if we recorded in a full seated stretch all right so take this one of these
33:30Kate Berlant:half the episode is you know up yeah around and then look heaven hello hi would the people feel it and then and then for the second half of the app i'm over here
33:44Jacqueline Novak:around i think they might feel it glance don't you love the you know what i'm talking about
33:49Kate Berlant:yoga seated and you're twisted folks okay yeah and you're you're looking and you're in this noble twist looking off i always think that's one of the most beautiful it feels good it really it
34:00Jacqueline Novak:feels like a swan yeah it feels like you're really presenting yourself i don't feel like a swan when i'm doing that i feel like sorry okay wait i need to turn off imagining someone thinking that not to brag but i need to turn off my ac because it's freezing cold one second you mean because i live
34:15Kate Berlant:without AC?
34:17Jacqueline Novak:Let me find something I wanted to share this week, a reading.
34:22Kate Berlant:I'll read a little prayer I found in a book right now. Oh no, it's, it's multiple pages. Well, this is what I'll do. I'll separate it out over a few weeks. Prayer to see, prayer to see. Okay. I opened Untie the Strong Woman again. And I saw what was the beginning of this prayer. I was like, Oh, a little prayer I could read for Kate. So she could, you know, and then I turn the page and see it's longer, but we're not going to read the whole thing. I'm going to read four short lines this week and everyone's going to digest them. Okay. And everyone's going to, you know, and then, and then it'll expand it, you know, week after week.
35:01Kate Berlant:Okay. So you're ready. Yep. Okay. Okay. Prayer to See. And this is coming from Clarissa Pincola Estes, best-selling author of Women Around the Wolves. All right. May we ever leave the unlit tangle we've gotten ourselves into. Again. The one complete with blinders, not of our making, or shutters we've studiously hand-hammered over time. Oof. One more.
35:32Jacqueline Novak:A little confused, but continue.
35:34Kate Berlant:Well, I could check the, well, because this is, sorry, because I could check the, just imagine them going, I'm clocking the Celsius on top of the stimulus, Jacqueline. You might want to pull back a little bit. I'm just excited. All right.
35:53Kate Berlant:Because there's, what's coming next is the may we instead, and then it's the length of much longer. You know what I'm saying? But I actually think this is cool. if we start with the negative and reflect on it for a week. See what I'm saying? So like, may we ever leave the unlit tangle we've gotten ourselves into again. Okay. I like that. Okay. The one complete with blinders, not of our making, or shutters we've studiously hand-hammered over time. Okay. Okay. So that to me means both blinders. I could be reading it because it's or, not nor, but I think it's saying the blinders other people put on us or ideas or whatever.
36:31Kate Berlant:or the shutters that we've hand hammered studiously. So I think it's those that are, you know, our responsibility and those that aren't or whatever. So we'll sit with that this week, folks.
36:43Jacqueline Novak:Sit with it. Sit, sit, sit with it. I'm trying a new Spindrift flavor. Not my favorite. Cosmopolitan. They were out of Punch. Island Punch. We've got cranberry, orange, and lime. To think you've never had, in all these years, my dad fix you a Cosmo. but your dad does cosmos yes he's been doing it for like 15 20 years i love this point i know and
37:08Kate Berlant:and he makes a good one okay and it it rocks you know he's stuck to it you know and and people request it that's really fun and i knew you would love it i knew you'd love that
37:22Jacqueline Novak:well so really quickly the americans there's actually not what you want to say just that last night it was really fun because i think we were on the third episode of the first season i would consider a re-watch simultaneously to you it's heaven we're ready it's been years for us okay yeah totally and then i did a thing where i i really we were in a moment i paused it and i said i just want to say this is a great show and i pressed play it was like i had to just i had to go they don't make them like this anymore there's a level it is the right recent russell the writing
37:55Kate Berlant:And then knowing, of course, that they were falling in love adds a certain dimension, a certain subtext.
38:05Jacqueline Novak:Because they were right at that time. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know what season they got together, but they got together.
38:13Kate Berlant:And then we used to see actor Noah Emmerich sometimes on the Upper West Side. Okay. When Chris and I lived there walking around the neighborhood where we were neighborhood eccentrics. concentrics because all, you know, all, all day long we're walking around and we look like, you know, sort of like slobs. And so anyway, the point is we felt like we were known, you know, Chris had long hair. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Um, and, and occasionally don't want to blow up where he lived. Okay. You know, six years ago, but, and he might not have even lived there, but Upper West Side, you see Nora Emmerich and you go, God damn, I'm glad to be a New Yorker.
38:53Jacqueline Novak:Okay.
38:53Kate Berlant:You go, you go, we love the show. Stan Beeman all the way. Okay. You said it? Or whatever. Yeah. I think so. I'm trying to remember. Did we yell out Stan Beeman? What did he do? What did he do? Or not. I can't remember if this ever happened, honestly. Okay. It might have just been, like, now I can't remember if I even saw him. Yeah. Or Chris saw him and it's so hard in my mind.
39:11Jacqueline Novak:That counts in a way.
39:13Kate Berlant:I think we, no, I think we did a, I think we did a, what I like to think of as a New York, you know, it's not, it's not LA where you have to banana, banana. out and back away like wouldn't even know why i'll remember cut to okay terminology of banana out but she's gonna be nominated oh yeah she's not some freak she's emmy nominated yeah yeah um but new york to me this is so important you shouldn't even have to do that in new york because the understanding is we're all new yorkers we're all on our way somewhere right and it's sort of like it should be assumed a new yorker isn't going to bother you and i think for the most part it is yeah so it's like i feel like in new york it's a little more like you give a little nod almost like you know like it's kind of just like love your work you know like it's just an acknowledgement that's the respect i tell the generations okay enough with the gossip okay go to a dinner and see a celebrity next to yourself and don't listen and i mean that's what's yeah guys if you move to New York.
40:20Kate Berlant:You have a chance to have a little self-respect and go, I'm a New Yorker. Yeah. I eat in restaurants with other, with, with people I admire. Okay. And because I'm a New Yorker.
40:32Jacqueline Novak:And freaking Fran Leibowitz sat down next to me. And yeah, I was performing the whole dinner for her and she didn't notice. Yeah. Yes. We shared a banquette bench. She must have caught. Yes, we saved a banquette bench. She must have caught some of the hilariousness. No way. Also because it's so cool it was you know loud and it was of course straining to keep my eyes on my
40:51Kate Berlant:dining partner do you do you remember who you were no with because were you with someone else who would be able to deliver at your level like it was like not like you was with john or something okay but drone wouldn't be drone wouldn't be aggressively performing in the same way that we would yeah totally so you didn't have to compete no i would imagine drone brilliant director he would be able to give you the yeah give you just what you needed to shine um these muscles okay if you get in there it's just it's just oh i had the dream where a massage artist said um god you're tight while working the traps and i was like unusually so you know like
41:34Jacqueline Novak:right right no wait that why i'm i have a question yes do you think this is a huge question i think I know the answer for you. Do you think we eat inside or out? I'm sorry.
41:48Kate Berlant:No, tonight's inside.
41:50Jacqueline Novak:Sorry. I'm saying, do you think it's not a good idea to say out loud? Like for example.
41:58Kate Berlant:Yeah, I do. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Because I have a plan. I want to do it proper. You don't know what I'm talking about though.
42:04Jacqueline Novak:Oh no, no, no. That's not what I'm saying. Oh, no, no, no. I'm saying like, for example, there's something I kind of want to share. it's a good thing but it could be a jinx obviously it's not like news it's just like a thing that's going on could be a jinx but do you believe no health oh you're like oh no no no you don't mean
42:26Kate Berlant:like like my rosacea is gone yeah exactly exactly like do you think and then it's like don't do that because then it comes back no i think that's like that's you know ocd like okay i'm gonna say it i'm gonna say it yeah actually it's funny you say this because two days or yesterday or two days ago i actively said to a friend on a thing it was like i don't want to say because i don't want to jinx it or whatever i'm like no it's not like that it's like if you don't get the job or whatever it is it's because you know it wasn't meant to be like yeah like like you're beyond jinxes like you deserve the game okay anyway sorry my question is like did i experience spontaneous healing
43:05Jacqueline Novak:because I'm just going to say it. I haven't had a migraine in a minute. No new medication. I'm off the injections I was on for reasons I...
43:20Kate Berlant:Wait, imagine if it was due to all the emotional stuff, like that emotions are flying out, so you're crying. Well, that's why I'm wondering. And you're not shut down.
43:30Jacqueline Novak:I'm wondering if there's... I don't feel shut down generally though. I feel that I am expressive, but I'm like, what the fuck?
43:39Kate Berlant:Yeah.
43:40Jacqueline Novak:What the fuck? Because I want to actually want to look at my, I'm someone that gets at least probably two migraines a month. Right. If I get one a month, I feel lucky and I'm pretty diligent about tracking them. Oh my God. Well, it's been months. Yeah. Not months. My last time I had like, I had four in May.
44:02Kate Berlant:Damn. and then like one in july and i had to take i had like two in june it's not sad that that's me
44:13Jacqueline Novak:feeling cured but it kind of is you should you should see my you should see april you should see but i am just and there's been a couple things i mean my my period's gonna drop any second that'll
44:24Kate Berlant:be the ultimate i hate the phrase drop i find it really disturbing because to me it's just like i was thinking about it like like because it's such our like lingo or that you use so i'm almost tempted to use it um to you but it's like it just really gives me like this feeling of like like a heavy egg like dropping oh god yeah
44:46Kate Berlant:um well you know what i've had covered oh yeah go on can you believe it though spontaneous healing
44:51Jacqueline Novak:like what the fuck and like triggers like i've done a couple things like you know one of the things i can't do because it automatically triggers a migraine is have any alcohol on an empty stomach right so like i've had it happen more one sip of something boom like at dinner
45:04Kate Berlant:before the food arrives right oh i'll have four olives it's like no i can't i'll get a migraine yeah it's happened a couple times i go oh fuck it i'm okay last month my period nothing a couple
45:16Jacqueline Novak:like i don't know i don't know and it's not and what's really interesting is i have not been without stress what have your breakfasts been did you start adding something no wait what about the new magnesium or whatever the powder that supplement the pouch yes hasn't that been like two months not every day though not every day i have not been religious with it she's speaking of the agent natu which i was actually trying to steal from jacqueline natu yeah and i was like hold please because i just ran out of my magnesium yeah totally qualia i want to see what yours is
45:47Kate Berlant:yeah it's a qualia it's a qualia i should send them well we've i've asked i've i've been like reach out to qualia and qualia was like we don't think the audience is um i'm like oh you don't think our audience is interested in supplements like that's funny that's funny like guys at qualia we yearn to hear about you on the podcast how about something like that yeah please send
46:10Jacqueline Novak:i mean they have sent to poog to be to be clear qualia is not sent honey they have sent 100 fucking percent are you thinking of symbiotica i am 100 sure it's qualia we got a we got like the
46:23Kate Berlant:mood pills the focus ones i have them in there okay but we never got magnesium i want to know what kind of magnesium is in here in in qualia are you looking because it's um let's see it's like six kinds that's why i was like mamacita you know what i want to actually it combines 10 here comes a qualia ad by accident but 10 me reading off their website can you imagine 10 magnesium forms 70 plus minerals and trace minerals okay and oh by the way guess what
46:58Jacqueline Novak:i want to start integrating and i'm convinced that this is the stack this is the stack okay the qualia or some kind agent nature some kind of like spectrum magnesium the k2 and the d3
47:11Kate Berlant:all right i i forgot about that for three and a half years i've completely been as you say i sleep the wheel when it comes to k2 and d3 thorn makes a liquid that has both right and i think i own it
47:25Jacqueline Novak:i think i bought it used it once put it in a thing and never looked at it again creatine for brain
47:32Kate Berlant:health yeah we got to um we got to find a way into that people talk about the muscle you know
47:38Jacqueline Novak:that i fell prey to the whole thing see this is what happens so today marks actually i think today's the day marks one month no social media for me wow so it's like a minute with that that's recovery interesting oh but i was saying when i was deep in my when i was really scrolling way too much i got convinced the creatine like i was like creatine gummies like some bitch was like advertising being like shredded with like array creatine gummies and like a little dutiful little capitalist zombie little consumer sheep went running went running to air one you're My hooves clumped into Erwan. And I've got the creatine array gummies in there.
48:24Jacqueline Novak:Really?
48:24Kate Berlant:I guess I might as well eat them. Fresh out of it, straight from Erwan. Actually, where we're going to dinner tonight, not far from Erwan. I know. We wanted to do a wild supermarket sweep in there together.
48:35Jacqueline Novak:Did you watch Supermarket Sweep? Yes. God, that was so sad. I remember the paper towels, the rolls of paper towels.
48:42Kate Berlant:because the whole idea was just that you can get whatever you want right or was it a competition to get the most value get the value right which is oh she's going to a laundry detergent like that's a high value item i can see the guy's face who did that god because times because it's like it's funny that that was the thing because of course it was maybe i'm in a modern mindset where everyone's so desperate that i'm like it was it was to see how long you could feed your family
49:11Jacqueline Novak:Yeah, yeah. You know, like, it was. No, it was just. Yeah, absolutely.
49:17Kate Berlant:But there was something about, like, if it's really just value, then there's an item in there that 100 % is the most value per, right? Where, why didn't everyone just run straight to that one item and, like, load up on it? It would be boring.
49:31Jacqueline Novak:Yeah.
49:31Kate Berlant:So there was something about it that, you know what I mean? Like, there's an answer, right, to that problem, to the supermarket suite problem, right? Like, there's an answer. Someone knows it. Oh, there's an answer. And I bet they're discussing it somewhere on Reddit. I'm just taken with my neighbor's ficus. I love a ficus. It just fills my window, and it's just incredible. You know, she grew it in a single pot, broke through the pot, reached into the earth, and now it reaches to the heavens.
50:02Jacqueline Novak:So generally, I don't care about Halloween. That sounds mean. It's not that I don't care. I'm happy for people, but I don't partake. Like I don't spend. Well, it's interesting.
50:13Kate Berlant:We all remember. Was it last year's episode or no? Or two years ago at this point. How long have we been doing this? Remember my ghoul?
50:21Jacqueline Novak:No, I bought last Halloween season. Oh, the cookies for the neighbor?
50:26Kate Berlant:No, that was Christmas. That's Christmas.
50:27Jacqueline Novak:I'm always going to do that.
50:28Kate Berlant:I'm going to do it this year, but maybe. But those boxes. Remember you were like sending me pictures of the boxes?
50:37Jacqueline Novak:They were huge. Oh, I just got chills. thinking about the texture of the box i bought a halloween costume that arrived
