In short
The hosts trade travel-and-wellness “survival hacks” while in Toronto, then pivot into home-life logistics (storage unit panic, selling/keeping furniture) and personal-care experiments (portable hot water, masks, deodorant, humidifiers). They also discuss food choices, hotel amenities, and comfort routines.

Key claims
There’s always a way to solve problems (including refilling meds quickly via the Maple telehealth app). Hotel cleanliness myths about Nespresso machines are exaggerated. Glycolic-acid deodorant can replace expensive deodorant and reduce odor without fragrance. Storage units are often a waste if you can sell items instead.
Notable examples
Maple app Lexapro refill in a hotel lobby; requesting Nespresso/hot water makers at hotels; Manuka honey mask (Activist brand) used as cleanser or 20–30 min mask; AquaTru humidifier maintenance; considering (then canceling) a $220/month storage unit; buying Sabai fold-out guest chairs; trying glycolic acid underarms; ordering vegan food (Soy Boys) and watching Bridget Jones’s Diary/Jerry Maguire.

0:02Jacqueline Novak:I'm Jacqueline Novak.
0:03Kate Berlant:And this is POOG, an ongoing conversation about wellness between two obsessive friends, two untameable intellects.
0:09Jacqueline Novak:This is our hobby. This is our hell. This is our naked desire for free products. This is POOG.
0:15Kate Berlant:Today's topic, loosely speaking, big brass bistro, Java dogs, sage sweat.
0:25Jacqueline Novak:okay so hi hello hello hello i did my 10 000 snaps i am in an airbnb in toronto okay i'm looking at what i think is lake ontario well oh interesting well what's amazing about jacqueline jacqueline i went to go see the odyssey and then the next day no no and then jacqueline was departing the next day for a week of tour which is about four cities
0:46Kate Berlant:it's only three cities but several nights in toronto three cities but this is jacqueline
0:50Jacqueline Novak:novak everyone has to understand this is jacqueline novak it's the night before or we leave the odyssey and it's like oh sure we'll get mexican food talk about it she's like i'm leaving in the morning you know i haven't booked any of my hotels i'm like yeah it's unbelievable i was texting you i was like with love i was like wouldn't it be helpful to book the hotels right
1:07Kate Berlant:ahead of arriving in the cities yeah and i was like amazing i just feel like the people need to I was like, yes, but also, I mean, I've, I've done it in the past where I do it. I, you know, you know what it, it's that in the past, like a couple of years ago, touring, you know, I laid it all out. I was really organized, but it was so involved in this other way that the decision making that's forced when it's just time and options are being reduced is helpful. So, you know, but I still like, I still, um, I'm just like, all right, I got to get to the airport. That's first. I wake up in the morning.
1:46Kate Berlant:I cancel one flight and decide because I decide I'm going to take another flight instead. You know, that's, you know, standard for me. I decided to fly port direct instead of like two stops and Delta with all my whatever.
1:57Jacqueline Novak:Jesus. Yeah.
1:58Kate Berlant:Two stops. No, sorry. I'm sorry. One stop. Two legs. Two legs. So. One stop.
2:05Jacqueline Novak:Shame on you. Two stops. Two stops. Fuck me. Yeah.
2:10Kate Berlant:Fuck me away. um fuck me out of town so i'm just imagining someone boom boom okay every thrust but it's
2:18Jacqueline Novak:it's it's kicking you away oh they're instead of fucking out of town yeah yeah um but but anyway
2:27Kate Berlant:so so then then it's like okay i'm at the airport i got on the thing i forgot this is it i got nothing i told you i go like not really packing i'm just wearing what i'm wearing i get clothes there which falls apart as well yeah by the way i don't get clothes there i'm gonna try so i'm gonna stop you there why do you have to get clothes no time to pack opted to go to the odyssey with you can't sit and think about really packing and yeah it's just too much so i'm just like you know all right basically bring like an empty suitcase with underwear and socks yeah and then i go meds computers technically nothing else that's essential right i bring my new pill case only when i'm here and i'm you know do i realize there's pills missing like the case isn't full like like i filled it you know like at the beginning of the month right yeah certain certain pill like the lexapro basically was running out it ran out oh my god i didn't fill it to its completion oh no so i brought my big meds organizer and it's half full I download an app called Maple, this like Canadian doctor thing.
3:36Kate Berlant:I do a text messaging session with a doctor through the app. To get Lexapro. To get Lexapro. I have to show them the bottle. I do the standing in the lobby of my hotel. It's just like, whatever, do it. Go get the Lexapro the next day at the local pharmacy. Amazing. Okay. That is a big part of what I have to offer, which is knowing that there's a way. because I live according to there being a way.
4:03Jacqueline Novak:You've helped me many times saying there's a way. Or you've comforted me many times saying there's always a way.
4:09Kate Berlant:It's like, yeah, there really is. And you just fucking figure it out. And it's like, and there's often a service. There's also often a service. And like, yeah, I had to pay$69 for the appointment with the doctor. And it's like, fine.
4:23Jacqueline Novak:Oh, you'll pay.
4:24Kate Berlant:Pay. It's like, I don't know. So I just, I don't freak out about it. And then I went through the whole process. I come back. Okay. I fill in. I get like 10 days of the escitalopram. Right. And then I take another look and I go, oh, my God, one of the other meds is running out on Sunday.
4:41Jacqueline Novak:Oh, Jesus.
4:42Kate Berlant:I did the entire thing. I'm going to have to do that. I'm going to have to do the thing again now with another med that I could have done in the one shot.
4:47Jacqueline Novak:Yeah.
4:48Kate Berlant:Yeah. I'm like, wow. But, you know, don't pay twice. Right. It's like it's the same shit. You've done it. You just handle the shit. so I've moved I am dying to tell you about the hotel so I end up on hotel tonight gets desperate something's going on in Toronto this week okay I'm like is it the world cup like I'm really confused it was a huge issue couldn't find anything end up at this hotel I can't decide how I feel about the hotel which is interesting having exited I've spent three nights there right yeah because when you and I've decided I'm gonna have to do full travel logs and I know that the podcast contain many of these things but like so when i come back to toronto it's not like oh i stayed there and i can't quite remember if i liked it or not right right i know the bistro okay the bistro okay it's like a hotel with like a big brass bistro you know what i mean you know you know like that vibe right there's windows like on the street level like you know surely they want people going it closes before nine oh no a bistro closed before nine like a big porterhouse steak
5:53Jacqueline Novak:at 5 p.m.
5:55Kate Berlant:Yeah it's bizarre so there was that um I asked for like checkout like hey can I get you know they call you at 1102 like hey sorry can I get like an extra hour they're like it'll be$20 I'm like fine you know that's right I guess I'll be giving you$20 just a little much yeah and then I'm trying to think if I had any other complaints but I have a question was good about hotels really
6:19Jacqueline Novak:quick so speaking of hotels and travel i just purchased something that um i was influenced by dr stolberg on instagram this um obviously for chicken so it's not for you what 24 karat gold these are uh powdered bone broths it says 24k bone broth collagen savory veggie blend and i'm into these ingredients i'll have to say we've got the chicken bone broth we've gotten everyone knows i'm a big i'm really into brodo brodo or pouches like this is a nice travel thing it's powder yeah and you know i'm looking at i'm looking at ingredients with apple cider vinegar onion um nutritional yeast red miso celery pumpkin kale spinach sweet potato carrot you know it's like flavor yeah um so hot water maker at the hotel so i frequently will ask for them to
7:08Kate Berlant:bring me a hot water maker if there isn't one yeah there often is there always is it's almost
7:12Jacqueline Novak:never they don't have it because i do tea but yeah so then i'm like so i'm radiating the black plastic melting the black plastic but then also my question is there's a lot of fear mongering around them being disgusting and gross where are you with that people are like pissing in them or whatever yeah people like people wash their underwear and that i'm like what are you talking
7:29Kate Berlant:about they wash traditionally they it's in the coffee machine that they wash their underwear so how so what is this myth so how are you boiling how do you wash your underwear in espresso so i think you stuff the underwear where you would stuff the filter with the coffee and then hot water
7:44Jacqueline Novak:is pushed through that underwear and then imagine the drink this is an invention of the internet i
7:50Kate Berlant:swear to god no one because flight attendants is an old flight attendant trick okay well first of
7:55Jacqueline Novak:all it's not real i refuse to believe this has ever been done maybe it's been done you know in the history of humanity 70 times yeah but this is not something that's done by the way if you did that your indoor would be steeped in coffee everyone knows the machine like it just it doesn't make sense to me like i just don't buy it i don't buy it i know i'd love to go deeper on this i just don't think people do that i feel no fear about it exactly no no and people love to go oh the nespresso i go i live and die by the in-room nespresso machine we know this and even high-end hotels now high high-end hotels nine orchard the bowery a lot of these hotels you have to request the Nespresso they have it but you got to request that shit yeah it's it's um so odd I'm going to Ojai this weekend staying at my beloved El Roblar they don't have them in there yeah and I haven't even requested yet I got a request in fact I got to put in that request now yeah I gotta call way
8:51Kate Berlant:ahead of time the ones that are resisting and I'm just trying to think why you know what I mean why
8:56Jacqueline Novak:are they resisting um I think you know what it also is I think a lot of people there are many people who I guess don't need coffee in that way I don't know I guess I look at my own friend group I go yeah a couple of us big java dogs need it first thing but a lot of people I think they're like oh I'll walk to the place and get a coffee or oh I don't know like I like doing that and I
9:18Kate Berlant:also like ordering in like all to me it usually becomes sort of the backup because I'll go you
9:25Jacqueline Novak:know I like going down for coffee or I like yeah but it but it becomes but it's more like oh I got
9:31Kate Berlant:the show soon i'm getting the shower like i've taken a nap let's say in the room daytime nap try to catch up and i go i'm gonna take a shower and i hit this you know that's when i load up the nespresso and it just like comforts me what are you looking up so i'm gonna send this to you in
9:45Jacqueline Novak:the chat i'm sorry but i googled i couldn't resist curious oh travel portable electric stainless steel hot water heater um yeah and it says right here 272.99 usd currently on sale for 144 because I'm looking at this and I'm going damn bitch you know what's interesting I should mention

10:07Kate Berlant:I forgot because this is relevant I could pop my pussy so you know broth is huge for me Brodo back in the day my theater run I lived on Brodo it rocked okay whatever people know I'm doing plant based now so what does that mean for me I still love a broth and brodo i want to say brodo has a vegan broth oh i i forgot about that they do i just i saw it they do a shiitake oh for me the whole but you know right i was in it for the not to be this bitch that's why i forgot no right that's why i forgot about brodo because i can get my vegan broth elsewhere but i recently purchased i want to try to find it these packets with these different and they're kind of like healing you know there's different spices and mushrooms and but they're they're plant-based but they're like you know the packet and you pour the hot water in and it's delicious and i just went through them really fast i gotta figure out where they where they are i'll find them and i'll i'll share them in the newsletter um but so i i don't think you
11:16Jacqueline Novak:need that cake i'm not doing it might be fun but i don't think you need it the fuck am i doing i'm already over packing and stuffing i'm gonna be like oh i need my portable absolutely not it's not happening you know you could clean the water heater if you're worried about cleanliness boil some water in it there it is right exactly no the kettle it really is you feel liberated when you can because i make a nice tea at the end of the night okay pivot hard pivot to a product that i just bought this was really sold to me i had a really great facial at amez amez it's a great woman andrea drea gray facials she and you know what i love about her too she said she goes vanicream vanicream cleanser vanicream facial moisturizer cool name these are cheap items vintage she also pumped up dew skin and dr loretta she approves great but she recommended this she goes this mask is amazing and it's a manuka honey activist brand mask and you know why you'll like this Jaclyn for travel.
12:24Jacqueline Novak:It's like in this gorgeous kind of big kind of toothpaste tube. Yes. And look at this. Apply to clean damp skin. You can leave it on for 20, 30 minutes, or you can use it as a cleanser with a small amount massaging. So classic.
12:37Kate Berlant:And it's so much. So it's like, it's kind of like, you know, back in the day, um, you know, cold cream kind of vibe, right? It was like, yeah, you can cleanse with this, you know, you can eat in a pinch,
12:48Jacqueline Novak:you know or you can layer it on um cold cream i love it looks huge though what i know cold cream is so satisfying i mean this is my hand yeah the size of my hand what does it say on it though for airline oh we're so fucking good we're 2.7 ounces i'm gonna try this tonight okay i'm excited and guess what i paid out of pocket for a fucking canopy humidifier which is hysterical because yeah we were drowning in canopy for years so i couldn't get enough they were arriving at the doorstep giving them away yeah i reached i go i know you have been so generous to us over the years i really need one because i had one deep in my garage like we did i think put them in one of
13:28Kate Berlant:our gift guides i was looking certainly and i did the thing which you're not supposed to do i was
13:33Jacqueline Novak:basically running water all over the thing they're not supposed to run water all of all over because i couldn't bring myself to look up instructions i just was like i gotta throw this away like it's
13:42Kate Berlant:been years and it's caked and i am going to i don't have the energy so will i or not but i'd really like aqua true to send the glass one because i love my aqua true i want the glass one it's time i deserve an upgrade you do you do i had someone i had i had a straight guy come up to me
14:01Jacqueline Novak:in some city where was i and he's like talking about pook and he goes i listen you know and i was like great and he's like so i think i might get an aqua true oh my god and did you say you were unable to maintain it no i said they're great i go there is a little bit of maintenance
14:17Kate Berlant:but the real key though is if you use it regularly it's like you're good it doesn't collect grossness it's like yeah it's almost like only if you let it sit there empty or something but when when chris was away last week i was like god damn like you got to keep filling this thing up like and i i did sort of give up and i go i told him he was laughing because i go okay well Well, I've decided that the Aqua True is too labor intensive while you're away. I understand. He's filling that thing up all the time. And it's like, I hear him doing it. I remember. And it just seems like, because we, I guess we drink kind of a lot of water and, you know, we drink it from that.
14:54Kate Berlant:And maybe it's time, they have a under the counter, I think.
14:58Jacqueline Novak:Honey, I mean, I have an under the counter and.
15:00Kate Berlant:Yeah.
15:01Jacqueline Novak:Yeah. You've been living under the counter for a long time. I've been living under the counter for two years now.
15:05Kate Berlant:Always. Or is there a, you switch it on and off. Separate.
15:08Jacqueline Novak:There's a separate.
15:09Kate Berlant:So you can have a dirty water for cleaning your dishes or something. Exactly.
15:13Jacqueline Novak:So a new thing that I've, my new life that I've started is, and I know you don't deal with this, but I'm taking a break from gel manicures for real. And I want to shout out Solis. You'll see this on Instagram being advertised, this like nail system. But my cuticles, what they also make, they make these nice bare tones. But this like a pen with a, like a moisturizer oil pen. you can have it in your purse to keep your cuticles moisturized because remember when I was obsessed with mother hands having mother hands yeah beautiful Kate so look at that you have no
15:47Kate Berlant:cuticles you always act like you have the the weak cuticles I have to say something yeah they were professionally done yesterday yeah yeah but it's not a gel and she used Solis it's weird I had a dream I was talking to someone about gel manicures like last couple nights for no reason really i don't know i'm interested by the way have you been catching all this like planetary talk where they're like the five planets are aligned really no this morning i woke up in a rage there
16:14Jacqueline Novak:was a lot of talk about i didn't wake up in a rage but i became rageful and i'll tell you why because i for the last 12 hours i was convinced i was going to buy a storage unit i went to a storage facility when he pulls up the thing i look at it an airless hot box seven by ten $220 a month and I'm going in the area 10 minutes from the house and they go you guys help organize with movers people to move they go no we don't do that you just show up to your box I just want to say the headline is I'm storing the love seat at my parents house I'm giving the old mattress to a friend and we're going to be okay
16:53Kate Berlant:is the love seat like incredible
16:55Jacqueline Novak:yeah that's the thing there's a love seat that a friend gave me because they didn't need it anymore and I really love it. And then guess what I'm making room for, Jacqueline? Sabai. Our new Sabai chairs. The thing that they have generously gifted us, which I really need, I have a small office, which can double as an emergency guest room. But there hasn't been, we've been doing, you know, if a guest comes, it's a futon, it's tough. They have a chair that can fold out into a double, like a XL twin.
17:25Kate Berlant:Twin XL, yeah. A long boy.
17:28Jacqueline Novak:Yeah, which is a lot better. And they have it in the,
17:30Kate Berlant:they have it in different size. I mean, they also have the couch version, the pullout. And then I opted for the cactus leather, the cactus leather, elevate eco. Let's see. And I'm going to put it in my, in my office that we all know and love. Okay. With my Navy walls, I'm just leaning into the whole dark, you know, like, like the Navy walls and like almost leathery brown couch but it's you know it's vegan leather right in all right let me see if I can find it they've got some nice chairs too these aren't cheap I and so I I sort of got really pumped and sent them an email that unnecessarily it was just from the heart obviously as you know Kate when they reached out to us I was like yeah I'm blown away by your brand because one non-toxic okay so I'm looking at this well that's huge let's let's let's take a second with that non-toxic Now, they're even...
18:25Kate Berlant:Julio Torres did a line with them. Taking it in a gorgeous collection. I think we could design something, but we'll get to that.
18:32Jacqueline Novak:I tried to squeeze it. I was getting greedy. I go, I want a coffee table too. I know. I know. I think we're, you know, I think we have a future with them.
18:41Kate Berlant:So I actually pulled something from the Elevate Natural collection, which is shop our range of non-toxic seating made entirely with natural materials. Okay? That's incredible. So from frame to filling, every layer. Wow. Wow. Whatever, right? So we're seeing it, the fabrics, the B Corps, okay, et cetera, et cetera. Let's just see here. I just want to find it for you. So new Elevate Natural, I mean, I spent a lot of time, and yeah, I went cactus leather. I was like, fuck it. You know what I mean? What am I afraid of? And I got like the 86-inch, and I'll send it to you. You can increase, you know, it can grow with you if you decide to add sections later, blah, blah, blah.
19:24Jacqueline Novak:Yeah. But then they also have the full slip cover and slip cover is not even the right word because it's the true cover.
19:31Kate Berlant:It's the same as when you buy a cover from them. That's nice. Buy a new cover.
19:35Jacqueline Novak:That's really nice. So I'm like, let's see here.
19:39Kate Berlant:Isn't there something tasty about that chocolate vegan cactus leather? Are you seeing it?
19:44Jacqueline Novak:Gorgeous, gorgeous. Damn, they're sending you that. That's amazing. I know. That is amazing. um wait i have to break in with a life-changing update this is a life-changing update we've all talked about heard about suffered over the question of natural deodorant if you're like me okay the deodorant i have hemorrhaged hundreds over the years i've purchased oh here's this 50 dollar little deodorant roller oil thing nope it's safe to say i've tried them all oh here's and then i've gone you know what fuck it i'm going full dove aerosol ruin your life and why not then i smell like what this horrible fragrance yeah i smell like i saw on the evil portal of instagram which i have to take i have to do a full month off it's been a month it's been a while but every now and then something happens on instagram where you go this is why oh god it's good so it's got fed to me some random girl talking about glycolic acid in a spray.
20:51Jacqueline Novak:I went down a glycolic acid path a few years ago.
20:55Kate Berlant:On what?
20:55Jacqueline Novak:Are we spraying? No, not spray, just glycolic acid as certain skincare things that it can do that like no
21:02Kate Berlant:other acid can do.
21:04Jacqueline Novak:People say use it for like dark spots on skin or I guess in grown hairs. She said, I use glycolic acid. Did I do a couple drops of essential oil? I haven't done that yet. has deodorant you guys i need everyone to sit down so there's glycolic acid in the deodorant no sweet is what you're saying no honey honey i bought glycolic acid and that is your deodorant for twenty dollars and that's your deodorant i decanted a quarter of it less than a quarter of it into a little glass spray bottle you guys i think no i'm new now i think everything's changed it is i had a day like i was like woke up was running out the door didn't have time to take a shower ends up going on a walk running errands like dirty day okay it's a dirty day and then i go i go on another walk end of the day sniff sniff and i'm free as a bird i'm free and clear i mean i'm not kidding that's big like i'm gonna look that up no it's and this is no of these this is no essential oil but i'm like i saw a thing that was like don't put it on broken skin if you just shaved or whatever but i mean i'm already fearing what if i plateau i go what if this is just the beginning and then you know just looking at this effective alternative this could be let's
22:26Kate Berlant:see has anyone tried glycolic acid as underarms people say they put on a cotton pad but i just
22:33Jacqueline Novak:like i like spraying it and obviously needless to say you're not dealing with white cast and you're not dealing with fucking fragrance yeah i think what i got i got the ordinary i bought it
22:44Kate Berlant:it was i'm sorry it was i think i was gonna ask if that's what you got it yeah um that's compelling
22:50Jacqueline Novak:kate i must say no no you guys you you don't understand i'm i and i'm going well do i have fun and add an essential oil why no fragrance is ideal just nothing emanating from i mean this is this is amazing today's another day it's hot yeah i walked like i took a long walk i'm good
23:12Kate Berlant:i should try this on the road because when you the sweat you sweat on stage like like oh yeah and traveling like you're on an airplane like that kind of stress sweat performance performance sweat insane it's like stage sweat is a whole different game stage sweat and and you know i think like zoom call sweat sometimes like you're like pitching something on zoom you get off you're like damn
23:40Kate Berlant:um i'm just questioning looking at the time actually look done i'm kind of ripped there yeah you look it's kind of crazy like a really nice illusion what is that bicep that's the bicep i'm just looking at what i'm gonna i'm thinking about what i'm gonna order in because here we are
23:55Jacqueline Novak:you know once again at night well folks i had california chicken cafe had a gorgeous wrap yeah i might have to order in from soy boys you ask what's that i guess it's a chain around here it's vegan obviously of course and it's completely nut free facility oh congratulations that must
24:15Kate Berlant:feel good and then i also walked by a place called what was it called nut bar yeah the opposite yeah Um, but soy boy, I, I'm, I'm, I'm interested in my delivery game has been a little off. Um, but you know, it's tough out there on the road. Oh, learning. You learn, you learn and you, you know, like I've, I had a thought today of, so I moved out of the hotel for my last night here to an Airbnb in this area called the beaches by the beach of this lake. Like, and it's one of the most magnificent neighborhoods. Okay, I took video of the neighborhood, not even myself in it. Like the kind of worthless type of thing.
25:00Kate Berlant:Like bad video of just like houses being like, I never want to forget this place. The charm was unreal. The flowers. It seemed like, you know, Truman Show. It was remarkable. And I was like, I don't know, I can't explain. Oh, and then I was strolling to go to the venue. So I walked through this glorious neighborhood. Then I'm on this little street and because I'm thinking maybe I'll get clothes on the way to the venue. And there's like a street fair unfolding. There's all these bands setting up. OK, food trucks. It almost didn't feel real. And it's just the question is, is it Canada? Has it been Canada the whole time?
25:36Jacqueline Novak:Of course. This is something that we always have to grapple with.
25:39Kate Berlant:Is it Toronto? Is it Vancouver? Their freedom. Now, I mean, just the whole situation of just some of the basics. Like now I started to raise the Vancouver question. I need to learn more. I need to know more, but I like what I see. I know. Between these cities. I like what I see.
25:59Jacqueline Novak:I think it's just really hard. It's really hard. I tried to apply for my Spanish to get a Spanish passport. Yeah. And they really dropped the gate on that. I guess a couple of years ago, I would have been able to get in. Yeah, I bet. But now they go, yeah, yeah, you could get it, but you'd have to live in Spain for one year. Claim residence for one year. I go, well, that's never happening.
26:26Kate Berlant:I don't know. I'd go with you. I'd set up life there for a year.
26:29Jacqueline Novak:I know what you mean. That's what I immediately thought too. I go, what? Totally do it. Also, what if I'm shooting a film?
26:35Kate Berlant:What if I'm making a film and you're acting in it? In Spain. And we say we're going to give that, that we're going to do that for three months. Let's just go for it and say it's a three month project. now you've done three months already right then let's say three months to just travel hang out and enjoy the the place now you're left with six months okay you're right like make a second film but i just mean you plan it out yeah it's like you know our friend steven phil sourced who's been in who's been in i didn't even realize this edinburgh since we went there last year and it's and here we are again it flies life the choices we have burger with cheese okay it double patty is always interesting when it's impossible because it's sort of like like impossible burger it's sort of like what are we doing here like you know what i mean like it's sort of like is the meat that good like the fake meat where you need like a double patty
27:29Jacqueline Novak:yeah i agree i agree it's sort of like i don't like i'm there for the pickles always a homemade
27:35Kate Berlant:black bean burger or whatever the although i i do like an impossible i think i had one
27:39Jacqueline Novak:i think once or twice and i was like this kind of like in the absence of a smash burger yeah
27:45Kate Berlant:does something only trouble with this place so far is that it seems like really difficult to secure ketchup let me just see if this is actually you know it's hard about life there's a few things
27:57Jacqueline Novak:but so today was a today was a huge day for me okay i again was pursuing i was pursuing getting a storage unit. I called the lug, if you're familiar with lug.
28:09Kate Berlant:I was an early adopter of
28:11Jacqueline Novak:lug literally six years ago. Lug saved me last year for something. I go, okay, you know what? I'm like, fuck this. I'm going to get the lug. I'm going to move the love seat to the storage unit. I can't live like this anymore. Okay. I go to the lug app won't load. The lug app won't load. I'm going, is it my wifi? I'm going, I can't live like this. I live in a mountain. I don't have wifi. what's going on. I go to the log website. Won't load. I start whining to my partner. I go,
28:36Kate Berlant:they go, it's the website.
28:38Jacqueline Novak:Look at all the internet's loading. Fine. I go, God, you're right. I go out on a walk and I go, I'm going to walk as I figure this out.
28:44Kate Berlant:Yes.
28:45Jacqueline Novak:Won't load. Won't load. I, without even thinking, I go to contact us. I email them. I go, hi, um, your app and website. There seems to be a system wide. Are you aware that your site is down? I just go, are you worried that your site is down they respond instantly they some form of ai and a real person or something i don't know yeah they they respond almost instantly hi we do not have any news of a website outage or any issue try the following like i'm 104 years old restarting that you know i mean i'm going i know and then i immediately respond i go yes it's not that every other website is working perfectly on my phone it's you then they go they go we're going to send this up the ladder can you send screen grabs i send screen grabs of the app not working i send screen grabs of the website not working they go thank you we're on this and then of course 10 minutes later i'm in it's working fine i respond hi inexplicably it's working now thank you i booked the lug for the thing i then realized no i'm free i'm not going to do the storage unit i'm not i'm paying that it's really expensive i really want to analyze this with you okay because yeah
29:55Kate Berlant:like storage unit yeah because i i believe absolutely yeah don't do it and and i believe and like i really want to like lay into this for a second okay because i'm kind of excited about this as a topic it's like okay okay it's like because i'm fundamentally the thing that has pushed you to this moment i know you've been talking about the storage of the burrow shelves okay that aren't currently in use okay so like the three stuff is coming right i have a garage panic right yeah i mean you have you have a garage like so you think about it and i know you like to tell yourself this story about how small your home is or whatever i have a storage unit i have a garage you have a fucking garage right and it's like to be clear it's small but yeah but it's like
30:35Jacqueline Novak:why pay okay no no to hold on to the shelves that you got no it's great now sell them off it's crazy
30:44Kate Berlant:like now it feels crazy yeah and then and then like you're paying to like keep on ice now i want to this is why i want to get into this love seat this question about this love seat a friend gave it to me okay now now let me just guess before you say anything okay i'm going to try to try to feel this through i'm going chic friend with something you would never have bought for yourself that is a little special in some way and you just love and so it feels like insane to throw it out
31:09Jacqueline Novak:no so here's what it is i saw this love seat at a friend's house and i was like god that's nice it's like a um leather kind of worn really beautiful two-seater i mean i didn't ask her but i don't think there's a world where she spent a dollar under 3500 or 4k for it okay and then i was moving blah blah and she was just like hi we don't need this anymore like we have to like offload it would you guys want it and i go yep yep yep sure i do so it's been in my office love it like i look at it it makes me happy it's great but you cannot sleep on it we need to free up space in the office for an overnight guest i'm not letting it go but listen so that was the impetus for the storage space and then i go oh we'll put the old mattress there we'll put this
32:00Kate Berlant:there and why do you need to keep your old mattress well exactly that's what i discovered
32:04Jacqueline Novak:that's what i later discovered i go yeah i'm i'm hemorrhaging 220 a month oh my god this is
32:10Kate Berlant:think about that think about that like it's wild no it's fucking what about cash in hand like what about cash in hand what about marketplace whatever like no no no no no now i'm haunted
32:21Jacqueline Novak:that i was considering it that much and i i mean i physically went alone yesterday alone as you always laugh when i say alone oh yeah i went to the storage space and i'm going there and suddenly i go and i'm asking questions i'm going okay and the deposit whatever and they go yeah and you know first two months are half off and then i'm like okay they've convinced me it's
32:42Kate Berlant:there he's staying oh they just got to get your ass your shit in there and then oops you know oh oops and then there's five years warriors i mean you know about those shows right of course
32:52Jacqueline Novak:of course because people i actually want to watch that tonight yeah so i and by the way they are on me the storage guy calls me this morning yeah he's like it's a business they want and by the way i didn't go public storage i went and they were very nice saf storage like safe they're they're very nice so i didn't thank god you know who it was it was a family friend it was my my mom my mom's best friend who's like an aunt figure was at the house giving me some advice about a yard situation and i explained to her and she goes don't put a mattress in storage and i go i go i have is it has a case on it she goes you don't want to put a mattress in one of those hot gross places what for a year two years and then what you want to like you're gonna why not after a year
33:45Kate Berlant:okay two two two hundred and twenty dollars times let's say 10 months buy a new match no of course
33:50Jacqueline Novak:it's it's like hey well I want to be clear but I want to be clear I'm not folding the tick it wasn't just gonna have a mattress in it was gonna have the loveseat the mattress the shelves some other boxes and they have a thing where they can set packages you know move into a bigger home god willing god willing the subscriber number's up okay well i guess i didn't i didn't know you
34:10Kate Berlant:were like so ready okay to move to a bigger home i'm not ready okay like but like we're not holding on to like the the burrow you know shelves like i would i would go more like you know put those on our marketplace get a little like be in the flow like you can get new you can get show's later flow god you're really opening up you're really opening it up like i can tell there's a almost like a mental block like that you were considering this even at all like no i know i
34:40Jacqueline Novak:know and by the way there's like a chair we got we got this chair not not super expensive but you know 350 i think this kind of nice chair and then we go what are we doing this chair's too big we've got that back there we go oh you know another another day you know the next house
34:58Kate Berlant:yeah how about instead sell it off for 150 on market yeah and go to dinner yeah or like it's just yeah if these are not i mean correct me if i'm wrong but these are not heirloom pieces right
35:11Jacqueline Novak:no these are not vintage like you are actually doing something huge to me right i know oh by
35:17Kate Berlant:the way by the way i don't even want that chair off the vintage thing and you know what like if if it was some vintage thing right guess what go buy a different vintage piece later it's like it's genius they're always a new one facebook marketplace so i've never put anything on there well it's interesting i haven't either i've only purchased i've done offer up i've done offer up too i'm trying to think i've done offer up now i like offer up because it feels more anonymous i'm
35:45Jacqueline Novak:like facebook i'm like huh i know no i know i'm like and come see me perform at large i'm like i'm like yeah you're like it's like i'm welcome to my house you know exactly it's too much so i've i've dealt i've struggled with that um but there are ways like we have friends we know people
36:03Kate Berlant:will throw people will was it that lamp you decided you hated it remind me you didn't decide
36:08Jacqueline Novak:remember you posted like you let the hags vote no that was the lamp that i bought the the rattan
36:14Kate Berlant:lamp the crazy bachelor i was like oh did you sell it off no i still kept it i kept that lamp what no i was wondering what you sold on offer up well i kind of want to bring up the app to
36:25Jacqueline Novak:remind myself i sold some gorgeous chairs on there before i moved um oh my god yes look at this i damn i've sold a couple things on here one thing i just called fabulous chair i sold this wonderful shelving this wonderful oh yeah i'm looking at it now and i'm going i had a good
36:45Kate Berlant:thing but guess what like that's fine like reverse image search that and find it like you're not an antique stealer you know what i'm saying like you're like even like some of the vintage shit you might have or have had is likely out there you know what i mean like i've been done like this like like oh my my selling ply craft you know like yeah like like because here's another piece of it are you ready sold this gorgeous chair oh yeah i like that chair so so um just get ready for this you'll love this this will free you in a different way okay are you still searching sorry i'm here okay so so i remember once looking for an apartment me and my friend erica we were like looking for a place to move in and if you've ever just gone on a search right where one day you you head out and you go to five places or whatever you're just doing the thing right for looking
37:38Jacqueline Novak:for the chair the coffee no an apartment in this case okay oh go to some open house type things whatever you go see some apartments okay wow like i remember just doing this with her in new york
37:48Kate Berlant:and you know there was one place that seemed pretty good or whatever and and the guy started in with like this sense of like you're gonna want to move on this because like there's already basically an offer on it this kind of kind of bullshit right classic yeah i remember like erica's like kind of was like not not so much because of the guy but just like this like we gotta we gotta move on this thing you know what I mean okay and I was like what if we had started our search tomorrow like if last week we had decided you know what let's do our search on Tuesday instead of Monday right yeah that house would no longer have been an option we would have never known that house was an option do you think we wouldn't have found a good place it's like how quickly you you start to feel like that that is it oh i'm like the biggest like you could sell me anything
38:37Jacqueline Novak:i feel like and the urgency like a like guess you have a storage unit i almost go let me give you my card right now because he they're like they're like we have two more units of that size oh my god how dare they and i and i go oh and then i and i almost today on the phone because like he called me and i go hi yes i want the unit i'm trying to find uh i need to find i can't
38:58Kate Berlant:believe this even almost happened thank god jacqueline jacqueline guess what i said to him
39:03Jacqueline Novak:on the phone i go or i didn't say it but i thought it i go is there anything i can do to expedite like is there anything on the phone like me basically being taking my credit card information take it now like for double the price can i can i confirm and then i actually felt kind of bad i call i go i'm actually not going to take it by the way it's completely okay i haven't reserved it it's not like i haven't fucked them at all no it's a customer like see you know it's totally the customer the experience means a lot to me i know i know i know it's like he was a nice guy
39:32Kate Berlant:oh i went to an amazing this place i was telling you dad about recommended by a friend and incredible store and like tried a few things on they didn't work and i left and you know i was just like well thank you you know like i don't know like it's just because you just wanted to
39:50Jacqueline Novak:be right sometimes you're reminding me and i actually said i said to my mom i was like i'm i'm gonna talk about this place on pook because my you know santa monica there are uses just for
40:01Kate Berlant:storage but there are uses for storage facilities that ain't it well exactly sell it off i want to
40:07Jacqueline Novak:quickly shout out carny couture in santa monica gorgeous like an apartment converted to really
40:12Kate Berlant:really nice oh i thought you were i thought you were like pulling up sass or whatever it's called
40:17Jacqueline Novak:no no no no no but but the point is i was freed and it took one person it took it took the woman going looking at me sideways going no kate god i can't believe you almost save a mattress if you
40:30Kate Berlant:hadn't brought it over to me like if you hadn't talked to her and this is one of these things where you move forward without talking to me kate like i could have saved you i know so because i mean also by the way like add but like i'm doing the math i'm going well it's expensive but peace
40:46Jacqueline Novak:of mine you can't put a price on peace of mine see that is so you to say can't put a price on
40:51Kate Berlant:peace of mind when you could you could apply that to literally any purchase that there's peace of mind that you purchased it versus didn't the peace of mind i know i could have not had this
41:00Jacqueline Novak:we have a question when you come back can we please please please please please please go like a fun like like the rose bowl or some kind of like flea market yes to remember the coffee table.
41:11Kate Berlant:The things can come in. Where's the coffee table for your living room?
41:16Jacqueline Novak:The current one's pissing me off. I remember that you were, you know, but I was wondering what the fixation was.
41:24Kate Berlant:Are you sure you want a coffee table?
41:26Jacqueline Novak:What? Yeah.
41:27Kate Berlant:Because here's the thing. Like I essentially years ago, I mean, I was on a years long search for a coffee table and in the end ended up with two round tables that, that I have that actually function more for us. Okay. Because the coffee table is, I might be eating. Okay. In front of the TV, I might be pulling that up in front of
41:47Jacqueline Novak:the TV. It's just so great. Obviously you talk about this, but yeah.
41:50Kate Berlant:But like, but like I pull that up. If it's the coffee table is stationary to me, the only way to eat on a coffee table is on the ground, which I love. I love sitting on the ground from the table eating. That is its own like joy but what are you actually using your coffee table for and it's an important question
42:10Jacqueline Novak:is it for you we're not eating no thank you so the answer is yes so then why why not get an ottoman right just so we have a explore this no but we're also putting things on i'm looking at it right now we've got a couple books you know we've got an ashtray right but as a surface for lovely things it's kind of like i'm just saying you know i i was freed of the tyranny of the idea that i had to have a coffee table and it was like wow so you have an ottoman you and i probably would work an ottoman with a tray with a tray that's the thing that's the thing which is a glorious look so you can pull on ottoman and then it's just some and you can also you're freeing me
42:55Kate Berlant:You could have a coffee table for the glory of, you know, you know, a book and an ashtray and whatever. Like that's totally accessible. I'm not trying to like, like take that away. You know what I mean? Like, but especially, I mean, in smaller homes or certainly in apartments, right? And then this was like a classic thing.
43:14Jacqueline Novak:And I do have a smaller home. It was funny. This is one of those moments in the day where my living room window is open. Full fish bowl. to we have a lot you know love the neighborhood a lot of walkers seeing my neighbors and i'm here podcasting with headphones and it's just like i know i know it's really it's wild it's unbelievable
43:35Kate Berlant:i'm so hungry i'm probably right now but the food's on the way 11 hero dumpling no i haven't decided yet no jack because i decide right now because i'm like am i really good like i mean soy boy would be tasty but i just feel like here's a problem get it now the like tofu vegetables and stuff that i've been ordering they're like drenched in like sauces that are sugary it's really hard to just get a simple let's see you just want like is there like ethiopian around or actually there was an ethiopian let's see i think they're closed um you know what i've been doing what smoking weed oh my god really like like by the way rose delights shout out always
44:25Jacqueline Novak:jar gummies by the way i just asked for them to send me a few because they're so fabulous we're back to the original formula they're properly powdered as we've said we're sorry there was a little mix up they were they're wonderful company they were trying a new blend and they were they
44:36Kate Berlant:were trying the blend to be natural like it was exactly good it was a cornstarch and i just want
44:41Jacqueline Novak:to say that once again if you bought jar gummies and they arrived and they were too gummy they were stuck together reach out they have great customer service they will send you a free pack or they will make it up to you so but the rose delights again i love the one milligram very light summertime it's i mean i just i i just don't smoke weed anymore and again the and the jar the gummies it's not like i'm a daily you know i'm yeah you know but dude i'm such a stoner the last so when
45:10Kate Berlant:are you doing it what are you loving what's like just well so here's what's fun so we took a long
45:15Jacqueline Novak:walk we walked down to a little little weed shop got some you know pesticide free organic little joints i'm talking about a couple hits i am it is i'm literally like i'm like this is i'm and also i haven't having in any years
45:37Kate Berlant:like you're completely forgotten i know i know like yeah the last was my gummy usage i remember
45:43Jacqueline Novak:us smoking weed maybe 15 years ago upstate new york oh yeah smoking weed all right but having a great time and then and then and then a couple times being oh i'm high like the classic yeah i saw a lot of glazer talk about this in a really funny way about like yeah part of being a stoner is like moving through anxiety attacks like being like like feeling the terror and being like yeah and like getting through it like that's kind of like part of it's like managing the anxiety of being high yeah it's like interesting because it happened even the other day i was like uh-oh
46:10Kate Berlant:and then i was of course completely fine we did that's a couple hits of a joint i was like smoke
46:15Jacqueline Novak:weed every day i was like fully like in the summer turned on thomas crown turned on thomas crown affair with pierce brosnan and renee russo for anyone who has not seen that movie i watched that movie a lot in my childhood it must have been on adelphia it was like it was definitely on a lot that movie fucking rules so everyone needs to immediately watch i mean the sequence the sequence like yeah i don't even want to say no no no just it's fabulous um naomi's never seen
46:46Kate Berlant:mrs doubtfire we're thinking about watching that i appreciate that you know you know because it's like i haven't seen that like in many many years and you know i'd be curious i mean i mean you know i watched tootsie the other day it was unbelievable you've seen tootsie right yeah i haven't seen
47:06Jacqueline Novak:tootsie since i was a kid like truly since i was like maybe 11 or 12 tootsie um well also just robin it's the glory of robin yeah and uh it's the glory of sally fielden what did i watch recently and I go oh oh oh I'm sorry guys maybe I said this already I watched on a plane Bridget Jones Diary the original like obviously that is an excellent film and that is I want to I want to speak to anyone right now who is depressed who's having a hard time right now you're feeling low I'm sorry but I really think if you watch Bridget Jones Diary you're gonna feel about her i'm really sorry like yeah it's life affirming yeah it's the performances are great it's fucking funny renee zellweger is so funny and then yeah she rocks forgive me never was asked to be funny again like what else right like let me think about that you know you're not gonna like this i know you haven't seen jerry mcguire are you kidding no i watched it jacqueline oh my god oh my god wait no wait in full wait this is this is this is so if you didn't like it tom cruise is a god to me and you're and you're gonna revisit and i'm gonna i'm gonna teach you i'm not saying wrong you don't like it you're literally wrong like something is amiss you were like confused
48:37Kate Berlant:okay i'm serious i'm not saying there weren't parts that i was and again it has nothing to do with their performances um i mean yeah it would be hard for me to to to it would be hard for me to see it like there are there are things in it that are you know of a time a little bit where
48:56Jacqueline Novak:i'm like of course i'm not talking about like oh these dated i'm talking about like but but i just want to say that god you're wrong when's this time you watch bridget jones diary the ridge
49:05Kate Berlant:i mean you've just you've just insulted your inquire okay it's like it's like hard to move you know what i mean it's like i mean like jerry mcguire is important okay well by the oh i actually
49:20Jacqueline Novak:thought of amazing merch i want to make jerry mcguire but it says bonnie hunt right she's amazing because also i was saying we watch that's her name right it is yeah you know what i'm talking about right sure do okay sorry in your tone i couldn't fully tell yeah no i know she's amazing
49:39Kate Berlant:actress bonnie hunt is in the context of jerry mcguire like i'm just like uh-huh and you know
49:43Jacqueline Novak:she's fucking hilarious and she's amazing in jumanji and she's and then there she's in jim mcguire being smoking a cigarette effortless or a joint a false note in the wall where's i mean i hate when people go where's where's bonnie hunt it's like it's like she's right there yeah she's right fucking there ruling this is amazing 64 years old what was the what was she
50:07Kate Berlant:jerry mcguire is a homage to sunset boulevard deep down deep in the bones to norma desmond yep well it's about approach this another time an homage so like cameron crowe and i'm i don't know if i could like how i fact check this but his films are often like homages to billy wilder films and like like Almost Famous is The Apartment. I don't know if you ever saw that. The Fundamental Triangle of the No, The Apartment. The film that I'm saying it's an homage to also.
50:50Jacqueline Novak:Oh, I never saw The Apartment.
50:51Kate Berlant:The Apartment's great.
50:53Jacqueline Novak:I have an announcement. Bonnie Hunt, and again, forgive me for I've sinned. the bonnie hunt show 330 episodes is everyone hearing this wait the bonnie hunt show oh had a talk show daily syndicated talk 2008 so we were kind of like we were like 2008 that

Are you aware that your site is down? Jacqueline calls in from her Toronto tour stop and the meds are running out, while Kate is podcasting from the neighborhood fishbowl. Eating in front of the TV, coffee tables and cold cream. The hags map out a year in Spain... but has it been Canada the whole time? Always a buyer, never a seller. Jacqueline explains how to wash underwear in a Nespresso machine. The saga of gel manicures and Storage Wars. Kate decants for a dirty day and takes a long walk to a little weed shop. Planetary talk and stage sweat. Jacqueline reacts to an update on Jerry Maguire. You can’t put a price on peace of mind.
