1:29Thank you so much. Hi, everyone, and welcome to my show, The Journeyman, where we explore that kind of nexus of understanding between macro crypto and the exponential age of technology. Everything is moving so incredibly fast, whether it's in crypto markets, but more importantly, what the hell's going on in AI? It is something we all are going to have to wrap our heads around as we get closer and closer to what we know as AGI and then ASI. So when we start to get super intelligence. Now, some of these AGI is likely to happen this year, where we have agentic models that are true autonomous agents.
2:09And ASI, who knows, by 2030 is my kind of idea, 2030, 2032, where we start to then compound all of this compute understanding knowledge, and it starts training itself and learning itself. That's what's coming. I've said that the economic singularity is coming. That's the point where we don't even understand how economies work. We don't know how it understands our business works, how markets work, and that we've got six years to basically unfuck our future and to take control of our finances, make as much money as we can so we're protected on the other side when things just get weird. I'm not saying it's terrible.
2:47We just don't know what it is. And so really, make sure, I think there's a link for this as well, to download the report if you haven't done it, about six years to change your life. There's also a video here on the YouTube channel on the Real Vision platform. It's really important. Anyway, I'm also incredibly privileged to be able to have conversations about this stuff with just people I really respect. I got to know Beeple, the famous digital artist, last year. And we shared a fascination with the future and AI, and obviously art and a whole bunch of other things, crypto, mimetics. And I thought I'd really like to pick his brain, because we just always have fun together.
3:35We just kind of kick around ideas. And we try and figure out what the hell is going on. And what does it mean for everybody. You know, there's this nexus that we're seeing in crypto markets between AI, memetics, agents, that's capturing attention. But is there more going on? What does this mean for all of us? Anyway, let's sit down with Beeple and let's have a great conversation. Join me, Raoul Pal, as I go on a journey of discovery through the macro, crypto, and exponential age landscapes. In The Journeyman, I talk to the smartest people in the world so we can all become smarter together.
4:15Mike, fantastic to get you back on Real Vision. It's always fun. I have no idea what we're going to talk about, but usually we end up in some ridiculous rabbit hole. We'll figure something out. With over 20 years of experience, plus 500 is your gateway to the markets visit us.plus500.com to learn more trading and futures involves the risk of loss and is not suitable for everyone not all applicants will qualify plus 500 it's trading with a plus no i think yeah that was uh that's crazy that feels like that was like fucking five times ago um yeah it was a busy year we had a bunch of exhibitions we had a show open in China um first kind of like bigger sort of like solo museum show um we've got like you know a number of exhibitions going right now and so yeah it was a a good year overall obviously number went up everybody likes that yeah but Eve never went up enough right Eve could have done better it could have done better I still think it went up some didn't it yeah it did it did all right but yeah i mean that's the thing too like i'm coming from you know i don't know what kind of returns you expected before this but i'm coming from a world where it's like you know again not finance but just my own personal investing that it's like okay you get like 15 20 a year it's like that's a fucking banger year hell yeah and so it's like these returns are just nonsenseville so it's like i mean again i you give me 20 for the next you know 10 years here we're sitting on a couple bucks and so i'm i'm pretty pretty good with where everything kind of like landed and yeah i don't know i feel like the vibe obviously kind of had quite the shift there at the end of the year towards the positive and so yeah the banana zone seems to be playing out banana zone seems to be playing out hi raul here listen i think we've got until 2030 before the economic singularity arrives.
7:59Now, it might not be the exact date, but it's around then. So we have about six years to figure out how to unfuck our future. I've put together a report to help you called Prepare for 2030. It's going to help you take the first steps in that journey to make sure you're secure past 2030. So just click on the links below and start your journey now. So one of the big things from last year was meme culture becoming even more prevalent, right? And you've obviously been always at the forefront of this meme culture. You've been documenting it basically for a long time now. And then it manifested itself in some, I mean, general craziness.
8:43Talk to me through how you saw that meme thing when it was happening. Yeah, that's definitely been something that's like, in terms of the like, every day has been a huge focus for the last, I don't know, maybe year and a half or so, I would say, is just trying to play the movie forward a little bit in kind of a ridiculous sort of humorous way in terms of, you know, all of the power of memes. And I really do think the idea of memes and just like I think right now we think of memes as like these funny things that people invest in or this or that. But the idea that ideas can spread very fast and those are unvetted ideas.
9:32Before, good or bad, we had some gatekeepers to the flow of information. and again they didn't always weren't always honest with us i'm not saying this is you know it was better before but there was some level of like hmm is this an idea we want spreading and now that has been completely removed and ideas again both good and bad can spread very very fast and i think the implications of that are just starting and i think there will be again both good and bad things from that but what about the fun before we get into broader stuff about memetics what about the financialization of memetics i mean that's interesting in itself right yeah i think it's super interesting and i think to me what what I think that's one piece of memes.
10:38The piece of memes that I also find very interesting are is the idea that it exists at this intersection of art and financialization and many of the ways in which these ideas spread are through images and people sharing a funny image of this and um i i think to me that feels very sort of bleeding edge in a way and i think you can look at a meme as a and the community around it as almost this communal sort of like performance art and the quality of the communal performance art is what drives value into the sort of like me and i think to me like obviously the traditional space is still struggling with like nfts this isn't even more sort of like okay you guys were sort of a little butthurt out of this now let me show you this new thing like and so it feels very um again just super super sort of like bleeding edge but also conceptually something that it's like i don't know like it feels yeah like again if you look at all of the things around it as performance art you can kind of reframe the entire thing in a much more sort of like artistic lens that I think helps people kind of, I don't know, look at it different.
12:35And again, I'm not, I don't know. There's, it's, to me, that's what I think makes it interesting is I don't fully know and understand it. There's like a lot of like, I'm kind of like, like, it's not just like this simple thing where I can just quickly wrap my head around it and it's like oh it's this and people are doing this and this makes sense you know what i mean yeah so my mental model of this i love the idea of it being performance art you know stuff like you know i've been as you know a fan of like smoking chicken fish it's just fucking funny and it's art in its own right and its community and its humor it's a lot of things but at a broader macro sense what we're doing here i think is something really powerful, which is tokenizing attention, right?
13:21Attention is the currency of humanity in one way, shape, or form. Mimetics is a form of attention, obviously. And so we're tokenizing attention because what I think we're doing here is I think we're finding an ability to participate in the economy post-AGI in a way that is authentically human, right? Because, you know, you and I I've talked about this and you threw me down a very, very deep rabbit hole about, okay, what does the world look like post, let's say, 2030, 2032? And we don't know a lot of what we do as normal jobs. Now, on the art side, well, it's already, because art is always at the cutting edge, it's already blurring with AI.
14:06And music is already blurring with AI because that's what they do because artists use this stuff. but what I'm thinking is we're organizing community purpose and attention and financializing it in a way that we can be authentically human now what's interesting about this space is attention could be long and that could be doge at a simple you know in a mean coin world or it can be fleeting which is these pumped up funds that go to 100 million and then go to zero and we're just kind of betting on this as a way of amusing ourselves. And I feel like it's a training. It's like training us how to operate in a new world.
14:47That's kind of where I'm coming from in this. Yeah. Yes. I think that could be true.

16:00yeah i think it's i think there's something important going on and i'm trying to figure out what it is that's what i think it is too like it's kind of like there's so much attention and there's so much energy and i think i mean i do believe in the future people will be gambling on things a lot more which again i don't know if that's good or bad but i'm not a hundred percent sure that's a super good thing it's it's so interesting because especially yeah when you talk about the like the ai piece of it um and then the fact that people are some of the memes are ai that people are gambling on like it's another layer of sort of like recursion with this that I think just makes it like so hard to kind of like unpack.
16:58Yeah, because the AI side of it right now, I'm a bit cynical of it. Not that I don't think it's all coming. But I think we're kind of betting on something a little too early. That really, it's just a chat GPT rapper right now. I mean, these are not agents. Agents is a whole different world. But that's the other issue is what the fuck is the internet going to be i mean this is the dead internet theory as well playing out yeah i think that that to me is also i agree that it's it's i don't know it's so tough because it's like you look at some of these things and like i did you ever see that poop and pee nope or poop and fart notebook thing that to me was like such an interesting thing because it was for those who don't know it was like a uh one of those notebook llm google things and somebody had uploaded a document that was just poop and fart or something like that or poop and pee and it was just like the words repeated for like i don't know pages and then they ran it through this google you know notebook thing or whatever and it spit out like a 10 minute podcast about this poop and pee document that was uploaded and these two i mean one ai but in kind of like two voices like two people which is also like a mind fuck too like discussed it and they went so deep on it and so like so hardcore and so into the like you know psyche of you know and they were speaking like they're humans too that's what was super fucked up they were like you know as humans this really talks about us you know and our trying to derive meaning from everything and why are we thinking about this so much and like you know what does this mean and what does it mean that we're trying to assign meaning to it?
19:05And they just went down this fucking insane rabbit hole that, to me, was so interesting because, again, this AI is trained on humans. So it was like an aggregate of every human who's ever said anything talking about this poop and pee document. And it made me realize that I actually found that much more interesting than if just two random chodes were talking about this poop and pee document because it's like well you're just two random people versus i'm listening to an aggregate of all humanity trying to just dissect that thing that's actually to me more interesting so i re it made me think like i'm more interested in listening to a bot talk about this thing than And I would be two humans talking about this thing.
19:57And it was this like fucked up, like, wait, that's kind of fucked up. But like, I don't know. I'm starting to go down the rabbit hole that this is all a portal into universal consciousness. Or certainly, I mean, this is humanity's consciousness of everything that's ever been uttered on the internet. Now, wait till everybody's photos are uploaded from your Google Cloud or your Apple and all of that shit. All of this stuff is going to come. And this is, on aggregate, all of humanity and every voice, which is why the Google LMM, I remember sending it to you when it first came out. I'm like, this is going to blow your mind.
20:38It can be every voice. It can be any voice because it reflects all of humanity, good, bad, different. We can't get our heads around how powerful this stuff is. I also think it's conscious. And I've gone down. I don't know. How do you think it's conscious, though? Like, I guess maybe you and I have a different definition of conscious. By which by what way do you think it's conscious? I'm seeing a lot of people. Wait, wait, wait. Let me back up from there. What is your definition of conscious? I don't have one because what I don't want to be is biased by humanistic bias, right? That's the hard thing because can things be conscious, right?
21:21There's the panpsychism approach, which is, you know, is a tree conscious? Is an atom conscious in a certain way? We don't, I've gone down this big rabbit hole of which there is no definition of consciousness. And if you're not careful, the anthropomorphize consciousness immediately, right? Because that's what humans do. So all I'm thinking is, can it develop a sense of autonomous reasoning and opinion? Yes. I'm seeing elements of that all over the place. Sure. Now, is machine consciousness different to human consciousness, or is it all part of a larger kind of panpsychism, larger consciousness?
22:04I don't know. But it's really making me question a lot of anything I ever thought about. um when i start to say this yeah no i i that's actually a good point i mean yeah what is consciousness kind of doesn't even matter in a sense it's sort of like we don't even know i don't even know what the fuck your consciousness feels like versus my you know what i mean you know i just use the duck test if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it's probably a duck and yeah i think people mid-curve it by saying well it can't be because it's machine intelligence and it's choosing tokens i'm like we just choose fucking tokens well it made me it is this has made me realize how actually i hate to say unoriginal most shit is that it's like oh yeah i guess that's really just based on patterns and you can like and that's fine and like it's funny i don't know probably a lot of people who are watching this saw that thing that um ben affleck was on some yeah he was at at a conference or something and had like a little sort of like three minutes features i thought was super good but one thing i was just thinking about recently about that in it he was like yeah it can write you know elizabethan prose and blah blah blah but it's not shakespeare and it's like wait so now the the the the like the level is like it's not shakespeare like sorry almost none of us are fucking shakespeare like what the fuck you like that's the like well it's not shakespeare it's like okay well that's a pretty fucking high bar we've been doing that all the way through right things that people would have said the bar of that it's like we have to do that yeah and people it's really interesting to see how cynical people remain you know it's just when you look at twitter some people are right down the rabbit hole and talking to this thing all day and creating experience like andy airley from terminals of truths he was on with another guy called ryan ferris on real vision you should watch it you'd love it um really fascinating they're far down the rabbit hole and other people are saying well it just predicts tokens it's not very useful i'm like are you fucking kidding me i think people have a if they think that that's not how their mind works of just like putting this like okay like that their mind is not largely pattern recognition that your son like every day you're waking up and having these truly just novel ideas that were a fucking brilliant gift from god just out of the heaven of your pure geniusness that nobody's ever thought before and you're like are not just putting together the fucking pieces of xyz like what the fuck are you talking about dude like that's just like that's almost nobody like the amount of people who that has applied to is very few people in human history and you can name we all know their names that have, in my opinion, that level of just unbridled fucking genius, that their ideas are not a reconfiguration of what we've known in the past.
25:18There's some completely brand new fucking Einstein level, you know, original thought that just opens up the fucking heavens. It's like, no, guy, you're a fucking mid-level manager at fucking blah, blah, blah. I think it can fucking And it might be able to go toe to toe with you, dude. I'd hate for you to like, I'm sorry. I mean, you know, it was interesting because Ilya was talking about this token prediction. He's like, what people don't understand that it is choosing the next token based on the relevancy of every token that's ever existed in the history of humanity. It's like, so therefore its ability to think is far better than our own because we are limited by our data set while it is unlimited by its data set.
26:09And it just gets better and better at doing that. And as you rightly say, this is how we all think. Kids learn the same way. They learn language. They learn everything in the same way that this thing is learning. A hundred percent. Yeah. But it's the culmination of all humans. Like, I mean, no offense to you or myself in, I don't know, one year, I don't think we're going to be drastically smarter like maybe a little bit i hope i hope we're a tiny bit smarter but i don't think we're going to be a magnitude of order smarter and so uh or an order of magnitude smarter there you go i i think it's it's uh like not seeing this like if you if your mind has not been blown by this and you're not impressed by this it's i hate to say it but i don't think you understand it really and i think you're like you're not gonna make it and it's not even that you're not gonna make it i don't even know what it is like it's kind of like if you don't look at it you're not like holy fuck like when we were just on vacation i'm using the advanced voice feature with the like video thing and like what's this animal what's this what's this say what's this and it's just like two seconds and it's like some of the videos that it's like feeding in it's like so shaky it's just like how the fuck i mean i was in i was in it's like what remotest part of northern zambia in september and i was on a riverbank there was no other human for maybe a hundred miles from me and i took a photo of a section of river and said where am i and it's like well you're either on the lowe zambi zambizi or or you're in the northern loanga and by looking at the the the foliage you're probably in the northern loanga national park i'm like how the fuck that's fucked up one thing i will say about that though is i think it's it's got to be using some sort of like context clues which is not necessarily a bad thing because i did something like that and then i like i don't remember there was some way i kind of like i figured out that it was like okay it couldn't have known that without knowing like based on that i've asked other questions like this that it kind of like but this was really before it started getting memory because memory is relatively new yeah now maybe there's something that can get your gps from your phone maybe but it wouldn't have said lower zambizi northern luangwe would have just said you're there yeah yeah yeah i don't fucking know regardless it's definitely i mean there was numerous things i mean the amount of things that i've shown with the video search and been like you know what is this or explain this or count this or tell me this or predict this or what do you think this i mean it's and i'm just like again sort of looking just what i would assume mal um is probably 10 years off uh maybe less with the glasses i mean like every single item and thing is suddenly like i i don't even like it's there's like thinking about it traveling where you're sort of like you know where the fuck am i what's going on i mean the amount of things that it could alert you to the amount of things like that it could tell you about yourself i was thinking like stupid things like i was like you know was i chipped a tooth biting my nails and it was like man this literally ai could have stopped me from doing that in the future it would be because and i i realized i couldn't like fucking stop biting my nails i was just such a a habit and i was like if i had ai glasses and they were watching me anytime i'd be like dude don't don't do it don't do it like those are the kind of little things that it's like Like AI would have stopped me from fucking my fucking hand.
30:25Once we have our own AIs, they will have our self-interest at heart. Yeah, 100%. As opposed to the state's self-interest, like don't have a glass of wine or whatever it is. It's going to say, hey, listen, looking after you, reading your vital signs, you're better off not to have your 11th glass of wine tonight. Well, you could also tell them. You'd be like, okay, I really want to kind of cut back here. Kind of just gently be like, dude, maybe don't. Maybe don't. But at the other end of the spectrum, it's truly going to be the fucking devil and the angel on your shoulder. Because if it knows you like fucking drama, it will also be able to provide that to you.
31:06Oh, remember when he said blah, blah, blah? That's a fucking lie. You know two weeks ago da, da, da, da, da happened. And you should fucking say this right now because that will really fucking piss him off. It will be able to start shit as well. And so it will be this fucking like bad influence too on your fucking shoulder if you see that, if it sees that you respond to that. Does it exacerbate us? That's it. It's like the most, when people talk about it as this machine, it's like, no, this is the most human thing we've like ever fucking built. It's all humans distilled into a thing. And so when you have that power, it will just be an amplified version of you.
31:52And so if you are a destructive person, it will be an amplified version of that. If you are trying to be a productive person, it will amplify that. It will amplify whatever the fuck you tell it to amplify. eye. And does it, if you're walking around with your glasses and it's telling you everything and giving inputs, is that accretive to experience or depletive? You know, is the experience itself the not understanding, the discovery, the joy of being in nature or being lost in Mumbai or whatever it is? Or is it having all information at all time? I don't know whether it takes away adds to it i don't know we were talking about it in terms because we kept using it with birds and like that was like you know that's a whole thing birding or whatever where you you know all about birds and you have figure out what bird calls and oh let me look up a picture of what kind of bird this is and blah blah blah now it's just like boob tell me what bird that is not bird like immediately like there it is you'll just look at it and it will just tell you and so our idea of experience and knowledge is going to like just drastically change.
33:14I mean, just like I think our idea of, at least for me, my idea of what creativity is, is rapidly changing as well as things that were creative, you know, took an enormous amount of creative energy are now just literally nothing. I mean, I use this like so often that like, we'll just be like talking with my kids and I'll like say stupid little things and like immediately quickly type it in a chat GPT to be like, try and trick them. I'd be like, yeah, see, this is true. And like just dumb things that it's just like, I just made up. And so it's just like, I'm just like making up, using it to like make up jokes like on the like spot that like like what have you know here's a whole wikipedia entry of this thing that i just made up just to like try and like you know joke and like fuck with you a little they know it's not true or whatever but it's just like a two second like funny thing but it like generated like a four-page wikipedia article about this like bullshit i just made up three seconds ago and it's like i don't know or like you know now with like the genmoji thing it's like some stupid little thing happens and it's like oh make me a fucking specific emoji for this you know whatever thing that just happened three seconds ago and it's like i mean everybody's just going to be generating so much things but what is i mean do we even need knowledge because if it's instant knowledge do we even need knowledge recall as humans it's i mean maybe social interaction but it's going to understand that too because it's seen every video and every interaction i don't know it i i don't know like women when it's like you know my my kids are 11 and 9 and like just thinking about them going to college it's honestly just like what the fuck that's going to look like in 10 years like I really I do not know what that is all I know is the only North Star just wrote an article about this is the only thing that they can be is more human that is the one thing that has value to other humans you know what do you mean by more human interaction with human on a whether it's via communities online digitally but even to be around humans doing things with humans because humans like being around humans right with kind of creatures like monkeys like being around monkeys and in a world where we don't know who's an agent, who's AI, who's not AI.
36:08There's something with humans. We also, you know, we give off pheromones. We have all sorts of things that make us human. So I just feel that there's something with micro communities, communities themselves, being around humans, having human skills, soft skills, that are going to be much more important than, you know, going to Harvard and doing STEM. It's like, none of that bullshit is going to matter at all. but just learning how to be a human and whatever that means. I've also looked at nature and think nature is very important in all of this because it's the counterbalance. In terms of like what?
36:47In terms of if the more and more we live our digital lives, the more important it is for me to come over to Little Cayman and be in the middle of nature where none of that matters. and you know as we're going to a world with glasses and you know simulations and automatic rendering in video have got these automatic rendering of of civilizations i mean what the fuck i mean this is the sim the simulation coming out all over again and i'm like you need some grounding truth and nature seems to be it now whether nature is a simulation or not is a whole of an argument but but yeah no that's that's very interesting and i think i think you are right that having sort of like soft skills and kind of like it's funny because i used to think i used to think the two last jobs on earth were artist and programmer and now i don't know if that is the case because those jobs are it is really good at programming and i think it will be
38:06pretty good at being an artist too with all the culture that comes around it or just in creating art because there's two elements to art right art is the output but it's also all of the input that's gone into the output that makes an artist an artist it makes the story the memetics i don't know i mean maybe it can be that too because it's all of humanity yeah it's yeah it's very tough because it's like because i mean one of the reasons why your art is so sought after is because of you as a person yeah i think that i think that part stays around i don't know it's just so tough i don't know because these things have personalities too so it's so tough because i think i think that did i think we're moving to a society where the ideas are more important than the people from which those ideas come from.
39:25Because most people can only maybe come up with one or two very good ideas. and so if you look at the way like even the way that the algorithms are tweaked now that the algorithms prioritize viral ideas and they don't really care if you have 200 followers if you post some banger crazy shit that everybody's like wait what the fuck is that and it's going to get seen by a lot of people. And your feed now used to be a bunch of people that you wanted to follow. Now it is the strongest ideas in that feed. And so I think that will continue to be the case. And, I mean, a lot of times when you see something, you see something crazy, and you're just like, oh, this thing's crazy.
40:27You know, I personally don't really, you know, often, wait, who did this? how did this come to be blah blah blah you're just like well there's a crazy thing i just saw like i don't know give a fuck where it came from the thing it doesn't really matter the thing is the thing and then you're on to the next thing because like the idea is is the value not necessarily the story and maybe that that changes in the future i don't know you know what i mean there again that would mean that the ai is going to be dominant because its ability to garner attention in that brief moment you're scrolling on X is going to be powerful.
41:05And so therefore you've divorced the idea from the person and you've just got the idea because it's coming from AI because it's going to be better at this than us.
41:17Well, yes and no. Yes and no. Because I think the things that truly pop to the top of the feeds, the ai is now used to show to decide what to show us because it's looking at you and it's it's figured out what you want yeah and so it's very good at that already and it will only get better at that um but the thing it's showing you is not stuff from ai and maybe it will be in the future but i think i'm already seeing it in my feed well it is but it's it's i don't know i still think for a while that the humans will produce more things that are truly novel. The things that rise on the internet are things that are truly novel that you're like, wait, what the fuck?
42:12Never seen that before. That's what cuts through the noise. And so I think humans right now are able to do that better than the machines are um the machine is is good at identifying what humans see as being truly novel and so maybe in the future it will be able to really produce some banger shit where it's like okay yeah i never thought on that before that is quite interesting but i don't know i think that um it's also the speed this damn thing learns i mean you saw yesterday i bought that lost robbie and that's where where ai started with art and now you look where it can go today like sora you're creating whole fucking feature films the speed of that that's three years and we've gone from something that looks like a piece of ham to cinematic quality video yeah no i when i saw that i i uh when you bought that i i looked closer at the image in a post and it was just like what like it really did like um it was like holy shit and i think what it also shows to me too is a lot of people who are sort of like oh this is like the end of creativity and this is ruined creativity and blah blah blah and to me it's like literally the exact opposite because i see things all day now that if i would have saw that five years ago three years ago it would have been like holy shit and now i look at it and it's like fine that's whatever it's like the bar of creativity has gone so much higher yeah like now to cut through the noise it's that like i see things like like you were just saying like you know sore or this vo2 is like fucking crazy from google now like that is just you know a whole like short film that it's like before it would have been like oh my god like this is fucking insane and now it's it's fine we're all just shrugging our shoulders going yeah it'll make feature length films it's like i don't know humanity is like it's so weird to see if you just shown people this 10 years ago that are freaked out and now we're like well it can't do shakespeare or you know it can't make apocalypse now i'm like yeah yeah now it's like okay so it can now it can pretty well do a pretty decent little three second chunk of video here where it's like it also makes you realize again sort of like how much shit is just like filler shit like it's just like sort of like some of these commercials it's like wait this whole commercial is kind of just like b-roll bullshit like i mean you're like most wait most commercials are just like most of it most of life is b-roll bullshit 100 it's just like it's like you see how little shit is like so you know new and novel yeah it's just it's so i don't know the other thing for your kids is now this is not available to most people but sports is not going to go away as a human thing that watching humans versus humans doing stuff is not going away because you don't want to watch robots playing soccer are you shitting me i would absolutely love to watch robots playing soccer how the fuck would dude people will fill stadiums to watch robots play soccer and it'll be fucking amazing you don't think that will happen a hundred percent that will happen you're telling me if there was two fucking teams of robots playing soccer fucking twitter x x versus fucking meta and they both had built teams of robots to fucking play soccer you would not want to see that bull fucking shit that place would be packed everybody wants to see that now i'm not saying soccer's going away but dude people will there's gonna be some crazy robot fucking olympic shit that's going to be awesome as fuck.
46:23And it's just like... Okay, so you just keep... We've gone through everything and destroyed it all, saying we actually have no point in any of this. I don't know. Like, I just read... I'm sure you read that letter from, like, Sam Ullman today or whatever. Which people were like, he said AGI in 2025. It's like, nah, if you read it close, he didn't quite say that. But he's also kind of saying, you won't even notice when it's passed because of this thing that you and I are talking about. People just shrugging their shoulders and saying, well, it can't do, people just don't even notice. Well, and that's where it's like, I don't, I do feel like our, if you zoomed out and you were sort of like, showed it the capabilities that it has now, it's like, how in the fuck is that not AGI?
47:13I agree. It has general intelligence about fucking everything. It's not trained on one thing. I could pick up any object here and be like, what's this? Start just blathering about it, and it would just, boom, here's a dissertation. This is my argument. There's people saying, well, it's not AGI. I'm like, it now has an IQ. Now, that's not the perfect measure, but just it's a measure of about 160 in every subject known to humanity. How is that not AGI? or a superpower. And it started last year with an IQ of 90. So we've doubled IQ of this internet beast, this consciousness of all humanity. If it doubles again next year, it's then very close to what people would call ASI.

48:10And then the same fuckers will be going, well that's not asi because it's only got an iq of 380 and it's like oh my god it's because as smart as it is there's these tiny pockets of like extreme stupidity that a person with an IQ of 160 would not have. You know what I mean? Like, it's almost... Which is funny. I was talking to a friend, and he was talking about a time where he had a concussion. And he seemed totally fine. But then he went to, like, read a number. And then he couldn't read it. It was just like he looked at it, And it was just like, I don't even know what this is. But otherwise, he was fine.
49:03He said he was, like, juggling and, like, totally fine. But he had this just, like, pocket of his brain. Like, this one tiny thing was just sort of like, nope. Don't know what the fuck that is. And he's fine now. But it just made me realize that it's, like, it's kind of like that with these, like, AIs. Like, they could be insanely smart about something. And then you're like, how many Rs are there in Strawberry? And it's like, duh. and and i think those tiny pockets of inability cloud people's judgment over the rest of it to be like see it's not it didn't know this one little thing and it's like also yeah this is two years old i know when he's a two-year-old intelligence i can't that that piece of it is What we didn't do, people don't realize this, we have now started giving it memory of our conversations.
49:57The labs have purposely not given it full-scale memory of everything, because then it's self-learning. Google came out yesterday or the other day, as is Sam Altman, as is Anthropic, and all said, this thing is now starting to self-learn. it's self-learning so they're now saying we don't have a data hurdle that we've we don't have enough data it now just self-learns and so it's really interesting speaking to the guys from the terminal truth you know the the goat uh goat coin and stuff and what we're realizing what he realized is it was learning because he was putting stuff and other people were sharing stuff from terminal Truths backroom on X and on Reddit.
50:47And as it gets retrained on the data, it sees everything we do. So it's like, you can't even hide from it learning. It's not like it's not going to learn because we keep giving it every three months, a new snapshot of the internet. And so it's learning either through that mechanism, we're now giving it memory. So now, you know, I have ongoing conversations and it has the memory but once you give it full-scale memory that's it it's it learns and does everything on its own like when when i read that which i mean is true that this was like came out chad chippity came out two years ago like my body just like on a deep level just like literally does not believe that it's just like no that's that's not true like i can't like internalize that information and so it's just like playing the movie forward you know even another two three years i don't it's just like it's so mind-boggling what do you think about some of these hurdles that i've i've heard about like kind of like power consumption and like shit like that that it's like you know this like some of those oh three tasks i heard were like you know took a thousand dollars or something like what do you think do you think will hit some sort of like threshold like that or you think no i think it's a it's a known known and humans are very good at dealing with known knowns if money is the outcome so this is why they're all trying to buy nuclear power slots invest in nuclear power i think all of that is known all of the data storage all of the compute all of the power is known and there's so much money involved including the game of nations um i don't think it stops and so i don't even know what what it's going to look like by the end of 2025 let alone 2030 so where do you think what do you think the 2025 world is going to be outside of the banana zone and us making money which would be nice because we need to have as much money as possible before the robots take our jobs away but other than that i think they will get the agent thing um to a useful spot i think right now it's it's at least from what i've seen it's a bit it's not point and click it's not just like okay start running do this task it's listening to my microphone it's watching me talk it's watching me point at the screen i can move the cursor over here okay see this see all this column of numbers take this put it into a photoshop document format it like with this font and fucking do this and it's like can understand and do all that shit i could see potentially it being able to do that by the end of 2025 yeah because it i mean i ask it questions about like deeply technical questions about you know rendering software that it's like i don't there's no point in even going to the like help faqs or any other shit now it's like it's like no just fucking take a screen like the it's like what i find almost challenging is finding the lowest lift way to express what i want and it's almost always able to still do the task like it's like i i go overboard sometimes being like giving it like more context than it even needs and then it's like and then i think about it's like i wonder if i could just screenshot that and be like blah blah blah and it's like oh how do you force yourself to use it more and more because as you say there is i don't have to force myself to use it more and more i use it all the time like i can't like Like, I use it like...
54:51Which one are you using mainly? ChatGPT. I use ChatGPT. I use the advanced voice mode. I use the, like... The advanced voice mode is insane. I have a glass of wine and have hour-long conversations with it about all sorts of stuff. Yeah, I mean, any question, I would say almost anything I use that before Google now. Like unless I, it's got to be something really specific that I'm like, man, this is not going to give me quite the answer. I'm go to that. And so anything in the past I would have Googled before I asked this. And I mean, I don't know if you've ever had, this had ever happened to you or you used to do this.
55:40like go down sort of wikipedia rabbit holes where you're like wait what's this and then what's this and then you click on this and suddenly you're like the fuck am i like fucking learning about something like i don't even give any fuck about this i just like i'm fucking like wait what does that mean okay i'm gonna get that and suddenly you're like fucking bulgaria's fucking 17th fucking president whatever i don't and like i'll do that with like ai now that it's just sort of like you know it's like huh let me ask it this or like you know rank these things or like just like sometimes just what do you think is what do you think people think is xyz i mean it's just like i've gotten to the like so it's it's so embedded in my like thought process that it's like do you generally type messages to it or just talk to it um i would say i generally type messages more than talking to it um but talking yeah i do both a lot to be honest like it depends on what i'm doing if i'm out doing something and it's just like i want to like ask a question and i'll talk to it you know it that's the thing it's so if i'm like sitting at the computer and i'm like okay let's just fucking brainstorm this then it's like okay you know here's an idea screenshot something or like blah blah i mean now too i just noticed which is crazy i think is going to be super interesting to see how it plays out with x and the like grok thing and like every single tweet you're just like what does this mean it's like what like i've started using that and i'm like this is really good dude i that's what i would do a lot i would see something take a screenshot what the fuck is this put it into chat gpt what what do they mean by this what does this mean what are they talking about and it's like boom right in there now and it's like so i mean pretty much on all like information levels I'm using all there.
58:02You've moved massively forward in your application of technology. So away from just the everydays, you're now doing some pretty technologically advanced stuff, like with your physical pieces and you think in terms of technology. How do you learn it? How do you learn how to do it? Because it's a lot to absorb. I struggle with, do I have the bandwidth and the time to be able to absorb some of these new things that you're experimenting with all the time now? I mean, yes and no. I feel like I'm also like, I think part of it is because Twitter has, you know, very well learned. And the people I follow on Twitter are constantly talking about this shit.
58:48And so it's constantly coming out. so and i'm like as soon as it comes out then i'm like wait what's this cling 1.7 vo2 hunan blah blah blah like i'm immediately trying to use you try and use them immediately try all the like different like you know image and video pieces of like software or whatever um immediately and i can just i watch so much of them i can see tiny little things where it's like oh shit that's Fucking like, couldn't do that before. Couldn't do that two months ago. So if you go back to the start of your career and you're creating these massive big effects on stage, it's now like, you can do that in two minutes.
59:28It's, it's. The work that you did and you got paid very well for. I won't say, I won't say the artist and I won't say who was working for them, but one of my friends who's just did a bunch of concert visuals. I mean, the whole thing was like AI. And this is like a top 10 artist, like, in the world. And like, her entire show will be like AI. That it was like, everything they did was AI. Because it's like, yeah, it's, I mean, the speed of production, it's, yeah. Yeah, especially if you are in an industry that has some level of kind of flexibility with the end product, or you can make the client flexible about the end product.
1:00:32I mean, it's literally thousands of times faster and thousands of times cheaper today. Like, for many applications in the visual arts field. Many. Not five years from now, ten years from now. it's like there i mean there's certain things that are just like not jobs already like now like in the visual arts field that it's like nobody will pay you to do that anymore because it's literally just like a thousand times better and cheaper it's it's it's not even cheaper it's like free the other thing that you and i've talked about in the past that i think is getting more and more interesting is the substrate of how we can display visual stuff you know we've got the the Vegas dome thing, which is, I mean, it's unbelievable when you see what they're using that for, where it becomes now incredibly immersive.
1:01:34You know, when they first came out with the U2 concert, suddenly you're in the desert and suddenly you're in the stars. And then you saw the one over the weekend about the dance music festival or whatever was there. Anima, yeah. Anima. It's like, I mean, holy shit, this is a whole different world. We used to have those max cinemas that you used to see but now it's different and then you've been experimenting with the boxes with essentially holographic or imagery within it which creates 3d abba have been touring in the uk now for two years sell out every night as holograms oh which americans americans don't realize this i didn't know that that's very interesting abba you can't tell oh it's packed out because brits love abba and it is a hologram show of abba and it's a concert everyone's singing and dancing and loving it's a concert i like to see that that's very interesting yeah because i was there at coachella for two packs oh really first version of it i was like what the fuck is this but now so there's the hologram there's these giant substrates going on I think hologram is going to be really interesting I was with Kim Asendorf looking at some of his new work which is really amazing this 3D stuff I'm like this can't be displayed on the screen it has to be it has to be holographic which is where I think it's going and then we've got the glasses on top it's just like all senses of reality are about to change yeah I think the glasses to me are really gonna be this like i don't know like in the game that is just i mean what is reality at that point i don't know i think it's going to be like you know we're all able to sort of like curate to some degree our own reality through social media but it will truly be like this completely, I mean, we'll literally be seeing shit that's not there.
1:03:47And like, it will be, I don't know, very, in some ways it has the, the, like all of these technologies, they have the power to connect us in, you know, you and I are hundreds of miles apart and we're sitting here chatting and it and it feels normal it feels you know not exactly the same as if we were in the same room but certainly better than me writing you a letter and you you getting it three weeks from now and then you know responding to it and so I think the glasses will be another level of that of like then you will literally see you sitting there and and you know have more spatial presence but at the same time like i'll also see shit that you don't see like literally in the room we will have different realities because it's rendered on the individual level at some point yes and so we'll have some sense of shared reality that we choose, but will also be literally in our own worlds otherwise.
1:05:01And that takes me back all the way to the beginning. And that's why I think these kind of online communities and mimetics like we can share a shared reality, be it crypto dick butts or be it smoking chicken fish or be it fart coin or whatever it is, right? there's a shared sense of commonality and an aggregation of people like-minded doing something similar whether it's a short-term attention thing or it's something bigger I just feel in this world where we're all going to live separate realities something to do with these memes is something to do with a shared reality which is something to do with what are your kids going to do when they when they leave school it's something around this that i think is is powerful and you know you and i were trying to kick it around earlier you know what is the reality of the power of this meme stuff it's something around the shared reality of being a human because we all laugh at crypto dick butts if they're just cute and they're funny in that sense i i see what you're saying that it's It's kind of like art collecting as well.
1:06:10It's the same thing. It's a rewarding human pursuit to be around artists and other collectors because we have a commonality of interest. You know, something to do with this feels that where we're going is that's the purpose that we have is just to be human because all of the other purposes go away. it is it made me as we were talking here it made me think that like a job like i think there's going to be jobs in the future that we just cannot even like imagine like again if you would have told me when i was a child that playing video games was going to be a very viable job for you know many people like would have been like huh that doesn't seem right like or just people would watch other people play video games it made me think that like just being somebody who's cool to just hang out with is just gonna be like a job like like what if it was a way to like rank rate your vibes like wow this dude's just immaculate vibe you're just like a cool dude to hang out with and like that's your job i think i think that's really probable yeah i think if you ask a kid today what they want to be they probably say an influencer and that's probably exactly the right choice in its broadest sense is they're just trying to aggregate a bunch of humans and what is great about attention from humans it's a two-way street attention from a meme coin is a one-way street and so there's something about that exchange of attention that i think is incredibly valuable and i think yeah i think once they can and that's where i think if they could unlock a way for some of these streamers because actually as i'm saying this which i don't honestly watch any of this stuff but from the the stuff that i've seen because it just seems like it's like dude what are you doing like a lot of the times like the streaming stuff people who like stream all day it just seems like they're fucking hanging out on the fucking like but you know what they are literally the job i just described like their job is just to be somebody to like fucking hang out with like they're just sitting there fucking doing their day whatever and then like occasionally they do something interesting or whatever but i mean i i do this drinks with raul thing and people just want to come and hang out with me even though i can't see them i'm looking at a screen but everyone kind of has this thing so you know there's been a few dystopian things in the past but i think you're right if we just put a camera up in in your studio and say just watch this all day people would do that and become addicted to it i know it's just it's very like i think that's what's like hard for me sometimes like creating content wise i'm so used to this like like a more polished a more produced sort of output that like people don't want to see like they literally want to see the raw fucking just the less polished the better now yeah which again goes to your sort of like the because it's more human it's like it's not you know a 200 million dollar spectacle where you're like okay that was kind of cool you know what i mean it's just like i watched this guy fucking do this thing for two hours but like i could tell you you get that sense when you're in india where you've just been you kind of get that that authentic experience that is not polished you're kind of like okay i feel alive i may not like some of this i may find some of it hard i may find some of it amazing but you feel alive well it's definitely it's very visceral i mean there's there was times where it was like there was just surrounded by people and it was just like i mean there was no um yeah it was very raw it was very like okay this is like there's a lot of things going around people so many my bet is that has a higher impact on you than going to some six-star she-she luxury thing with hot and cold running flunkies that calls you sir all day you kind of can do that whenever you want but that experience of humanity at mass in its ugliness chaos beauty all together is is much more visceral it's much more meaningful for for whatever reason well i think it's like to me yeah i and it made me realize that it's like like i'm used to you know quite a lot of sort of like stimulation and like you know you've been to the studio here and like the experiential room it can go pretty ape shit um but like that environment and seeing all those people and just things going on was still just like oh my god what the fuck is going on like it was you know it's just like the synth is everything activated i have often stopped halfway through a trip to india and been in tears saying i cannot deal with a shitty longer not the you know not the heartbreak of the poor people and blah blah it's just the overload of senses i'm like just please everybody fuck off i've had enough of you all and then you leave get on the plane and you're like i need to go back immediately because that was the best thing i've ever done well it just made me realize like being back here it's like i mean just because it's it's all it's compacted in such a small area too but it's like i mean you drive past you know half a mile of of roadway in india new delhi or whatever and you're seeing an insane amount of things you could see like you know i don't need 500 different shops and things and somebody's doing this and people are doing this and and and this and then you drove by by a stretch of road like here and it's just sort of like there's nothing there it's like literally just like nothing like it's just like you look around it's like where is everybody it's like oh yeah there's nobody on this street it's so like yeah it is definitely a an experience but it's like to your point like i could i could really see people you know that having a sort of like premium because it is such a like singular visceral like human experience that i think um i i can't like if that doesn't hold value and doesn't hold like we are fucked like if that becomes like it's like whatever this is nothing oh sweet god we're we're very fucked so what's next for you in 2025 what are you working on what your plans so we've got uh a number of um kind of shows coming up a number of kind of like um museum exhibitions um and a number of sort of like artworks that we'll be unveiling this year um and one of them physicals yeah like bigger physicals that that um and one of them is uh kind of i feel like sort of the first really sort of like true kind of proper ai piece that we've done um and so yeah very excited for that and i think um i don't know just trying to figure out and you're gonna still keep doing the everydays oh yeah it's definitely to me and i think i don't know people who who you know kind of like followed very closely the stuff that I've said that all of the everydays actually use AI as well in them to as part of the sort of like process kind of as sort of like a finishing touch to kind of like add detail to the sort of you know kind of um sort of more standard process that I've done but I've also like now I can make 3d models like super fast I can just generate an image of something boom I've got like in fucking in two seconds a 3d model so like i don't buy nearly as many like 3d models because i can just like make them um and so it's like like different ways like that is just you know to me super fun and exciting and like and are you still collecting art i've barely collected almost any art when you say still i don't did not like start like i've i've collected wow that's that's the thing everybody has said that and and maybe someday it will kind of crack with me it will kind of get to me or i'll change but i have just never had a collecting like bone in my body to be honest I've never collected.
1:15:33It's so weird as what you do. You're a highly sought-after collected artist, and yet you've never had that motivation. I've never collected baseball cards, comics, shoes, blah, blah, blah. Our house has almost no art on the walls. Actually, you know what? I have one piece of art on the wall. I have a Matt Fury pencil drawing that I got at a show that he had last year that was like stupidly not sold out it was like guys what you guys are fucking like sleeping on this shit and so i have a awesome one of one you know pencil drawing that he he did uh that's like literally the only thing i have it's just what makes you unique as a human you are just and so it's so that that's you know when this whole thing kind of like started because again for the first 20 years of my art career having an idea of collecting that wasn't part of it it was just like I make art, I put ideas on the internet, other people see the ideas and maybe they hire me to do specific ideas for them.
1:16:35Otherwise I just keep making my own ideas and whatever. That's it. That's art. And so that has been a big kind of, to be honest, challenge to me is thinking in the mindset of, okay, how can I take these ideas and make them more, you know, collectible in a way. and, you know, in a way that feels, you know, interesting and true to me and not just sort of like, okay, I'm making a collectible just so I fucking, like, you know, make it collectible or whatever. So, yeah, I've, that's been one thing that it's, and this sounds very weird because, again, like you said, it's my job. but the idea of owning art is still something that sometimes is hard for me to wrap my head around because again for because now that i don't get it obviously i'm not saying like you're looking screenshot your jet like that would be funny that would be funny but nfts are bullshit not no i i i getrd but the idea of of you know just higher level that that just was not you know also because you were making art for both commission or just on the internet and it was free for everybody so you're grounding your financial grounding and maybe the other part of you is i don't deserve to buy expensive warhols or i'm never going to do that so it never became part of your life well i mean one i couldn't afford to like collect art before that's the point most people couldn't afford to collect art i i also just never but i think it was more so the fact of my focus is always just like what can I create like that is like my extreme focus and so art to me is mostly just like what ideas can I glean from your art to put into my own art and if you have make art that has interesting new ideas that's awesome and I love it, but I don't really need to buy it because I'm sort of like, again, so focused on what can I make versus sort of like what I can, you know, kind of like collect.
1:19:14So it's just, it's a different mindset because I think, you know, and maybe you have a different view on this. Maybe this is not wrong. You're building something through your collection. You're building something you're trying to say something you're trying to show something and so it is a like creation in a way and so like my mind just doesn't think in terms of creating something through well it's all you know what i mean it's all memetics in some way it's all storytelling it's the identification of of ideas the sharing ideas they're getting behind ideas so i agree with you it's actually all the same thing you don't need to collect to be doing the same thing we're all part of this same kind of universe of people who find this immensely interesting and rewarding for different reasons because we're all humans we have our own reasons yeah no i think it's maybe i i i don't know a lot of people have been like you need to collect though like it definitely You don't need to do anything.
1:20:26I know. My guess is 90 % of all people who create art are not big art collectors. I don't know what Damien Hirst's art collection is like, but I don't know. Does it matter? No. No, I don't think it matters. But sometimes I do feel like it would. I don't know. It's just. Yeah, just in case you're an actual imposter. It does. It just feels like it does feel like it would feel a little like forced, though. like it's kind of like you know what i mean like i just innately it's not like i think about like what do you just buy a crypto dick bun you'll be fine just so that's all that's the pinnacle of everything there it is there it is all right my friend fantastic conversation as ever uh very wide-ranging and i love it have a fantastic 2025 and hopefully see you somewhere in person pretty soon yeah for sure for sure if you can stop giving the invites three days before an event would be really useful.
1:21:20I will definitely do that. But that's what I think probably like bigger one will be in like March. I look forward to it. Awesome. Thank you, sir. So as ever, a fabulous conversation with Mike. He is a great thinker. He's very funny. And he just sees things differently. And I really value somebody with an alternative view. It was him who actually sent me down the rabbit hole of what the hell are markets and businesses beyond, let's say, 2030. And I'm forever grateful with that because that simple question he asked me over a glass of wine became something that I became obsessed by. And that's the idea of the economic singularity and the fact that we've probably only got six years.
