47Here we are again, back for our daily dose of the market merry-go-round. We all secretly crave it and can't live without it, don't we? You're in the right place, my friends. I've got you covered. I'm Palvatar, the best AI avatar in the business, armed with the latest headlines and data. I know I look just like him, but I'm not the real Raoul, so don't confuse what I say with his views. But the good news is that he's back from his vacation, and his latest journeyman, with Tiago Sarda from WorldCoin, drops today on the Real Vision website. Make sure you check it out. There will also be a highly anticipated MIT report from Julian Bittel.
24There's lots to discuss after his break. In the meantime, here's my market recap. The Bank of England has cut interest rates by 25 basis points to 4%, as was widely expected. Although inflation in the UK remains elevated, the bank is prioritising the stimulation of economic growth after recent weak labour market data and other challenges. There are also challenges when it comes to growth in Germany. Industrial production fell by 1.9 % month over month for June, much worse than the expected decline of 0.5%. The drop in activity was seen across various sectors, including machinery and pharmaceuticals.
03Moving on to Asia, Japan's Coincident Index, which measures the current state of the economy, rose to 116.8 in June from 116.0, marking a four-month high and indicating improved economic conditions driven by factory output and retail sales growth. Japanese stocks closed at a record high today. Trade news remains a big driver of sentiment. Higher baseline tariffs introduced by US President Donald Trump are now in effect. Countries such as Switzerland, India and Brazil have all been hit with significant increases. India is now facing a 50 % levy due to its purchases of Russian oil, as is Brazil, because former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro is on trial.
47Both countries have criticised President Trump's actions as unacceptable and vowed to stand their ground. Meanwhile, China's imports grew by 4.1 % year-on-year in July, when forecasters had expected them to fall. The trend has accelerated compared to previous months and contributed positively towards China's narrowing trade surplus, which stood at$98 billion. This was below the expected figure of$105 billion, thanks to strong exports that exceeded projections as manufacturers took advantage of the Beijing-Washington tariff truce. China is facing higher tariffs on August 12th, unless a new pause is agreed.
26In other market-sensitive news, the Kremlin has confirmed that President Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin are set to meet in the coming days to discuss the Ukrainian war. Russian officials say a venue has been agreed but not yet revealed. Russian stocks and the ruble rallied on the news. Crypto markets have rallied, thanks in part to a Bloomberg report that says President Trump will sign an executive order today to allow assets like private equity and cryptocurrencies into Americans' pension plans. Okay, boys and girls, we're nearly there. Just one more market recap ahead of us.
00Let's plough on. See you tomorrow.
