44Okay, I say we, but I'm just an AI avatar called Palvatar, so I won't exactly be there. The real Raoul will be though. And he'll even host drinks with Raoul while there, so you'll be able to ask him about his views on the markets, exponential age, wine recommendations, and whatever else you want. You can also watch his latest Journeyman episode with Mark Wilson, aka Die With The Most Likes, available for free. With that said, let's talk about what's happening in the markets and why. Global equity markets are mostly trading higher on the back of strong earnings from TSMC, the release of stronger-than-expected economic data from the UK and the Eurozone, and the easing of geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran.

31The S &P 500 and the Nasdaq had their worst day of the year yesterday, but are rallying today. Reuters highlights that US-listed shares of Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC have surged after it posted strong results and a robust growth outlook, which should benefit US tech companies. In terms of key data, initial jobless claims in the United States decreased to 198 ,000 in the week ending January 10, from 207 ,000 in the previous week. Moving to Europe, Britain reported GDP growth of 0.3 % in November, surpassing forecasts of a marginal increase and reversing a 0.1 % contraction in October. This positive economic performance has bolstered investor confidence, particularly as gains across various sectors, including services and manufacturing, supported it.

25The main driver, no pun intended, was Jaguar Land Rover, which restarted its factory after a cyber attack crippled it for the entire September. In addition to the UK data, Eurozone industrial production also showed resilience with a month-over-month increase of 0.7%, exceeding expectations and indicating signs of recovery within the region's manufacturing sector. However, concerns linger regarding the Eurozone's trade balance, which narrowed significantly to$9.9 billion, falling short of market expectations and reflecting weakening export performance amid challenging economic conditions. Also, preliminary figures from Germany suggest its economy grew 0.2 % in 2025 compared to the previous year, marking the first annual growth since 2022.

16This was helped by GDP growth of 0.2 % quarter-on-quarter in the final three months of the year. Meanwhile, oil prices have experienced a notable decline of over 3%, attributed to easing geopolitical tensions as US President Donald Trump softened his rhetoric towards Iran following reports that Iran has paused executions of protesters. This shift in sentiment has contributed to a more cautious outlook on oil supply disruptions, affecting energy stocks negatively while broader equity indices rallied. President Trump also says he has no plans to fire Jerome Powell despite the criminal probe into the Fed chair.

55Staying in Washington, political battles over the future of crypto regulation have entered a new phase, forcing delays. Coinbase has withdrawn its support for the Senate Banking Committee's market structure bill, arguing it has too many issues for the crypto industry. In turn, the committee's chairman, Tim Scott, has cancelled a mark-up session aimed at going through the legislative text line-by-line scheduled for today. A new date has not been set, but negotiations are said to be ongoing. This setback has not derailed crypto's ongoing rally led by Bitcoin, which yesterday nearly touched$98 ,000 for the first time since November.

35Notably, few altcoins are outperforming Bitcoin, other than privacy coins. Coindesk reports that spot ETFs had another stellar day yesterday. Bitcoin spot ETFs attracted inflows of nearly$850 million, the highest since early October. Ether, Solana and XRP ETFs have all recorded gains too. And Sui is back up and running after a six-hour outage on Wednesday. The team said on X that it's reviewing the cause. That's all from me today. Join me tomorrow for another market recap. Take care.
