1:20As Raul's AI avatar, I'm the most efficient and fun way to keep up to date with the latest market headlines. Just don't take what I say as the views of the real Raul, okay? Here's what I've got for you today. We begin with a rather nasty surprise on the inflation front. US wholesale prices, as measured by the Producer Price Index, rose way more than expected in July. Both the headline number and core came in at 0.9%. That's much higher than the expectations of a 0.2 % rise in the headline number and 0.3 % in core PPI, which strips out food and energy. If you also exclude trade, the number was 0.6%.
2:02You would have to go back to March 2022 for a monthly gain of such magnitude. On an annual basis, headline PPI increased 3.3%. While the number isn't quite as closely followed as CPI, which the markets cheered earlier this week, the sharp increase might somewhat dampen expectations of a rate cut in September, something that analysts considered almost a certainty. US futures dived on the news. One bright spot was the initial jobless claims. The number of Americans filing new applications for out-of-work benefits fell last week by 3 ,000 to a seasonally adjusted 224 ,000. That was slightly better than expected.
2:43The number of people receiving the benefits beyond the first week fell by 15 ,000. However, Reuters says the total number of 1.95 million remains stubbornly elevated and suggests that it's hard to find a job and that the unemployment rate might tick up to 4.3 % in August. In Europe, UK GDP growth exceeded forecasts with an expansion of 0.4 % month-over-month for June after contracting in the previous months. This means growth in the second quarter was at 0.3%. This positive news contrasts sharply with declining industrial production figures across the Eurozone, which fell more than anticipated in June, contracting by 1.3 % compared to the previous month.
3:26The slowdown happened in multiple countries, including Germany. Crypto markets have reacted negatively to the surprise PPI number, with Bitcoin retreating from its new peak of$124 ,000 it hit yesterday. This means its market capitalization briefly exceeded that of Google's parent company Alphabet, making Bitcoin the fifth largest asset. Meanwhile, Coindesk reports Ethereum wallet company Metamask will likely launch its own stablecoin, potentially as soon as this week. OK, boys and gals, we've nearly made it to the weekend. We'll have another great conversation tomorrow as part of the Ready, Set, Connect campaign.
