In short
Tottenham’s early-season transformation under Thomas Frank, highlighted by a 2-0 win at Manchester City (Etihad) and debate over transfer-window frustrations, especially missing out on players like Eze.
Guest backgrounds
Two Spurs fans/hosts discuss tactics and transfers. One focuses on match analysis and player roles; the other emphasizes squad-building, club management, and transfer dealings.
Key claims
Frank has “raised the floor” of the team—Spurs look controlled, hard-working, and flexible versus big sides. The captain’s joking tweet frames Spurs as on track for 114 points, 95 goals, and zero conceded. Palhinha’s arrival is portrayed as a midfield enforcer that improves others (Bissouma/Porro/Papet Matassar mentioned). Papet Matassar is described as an “eye test” player who covers ground, recycles possession, breaks attacks, and is effectively undroppable. The hosts argue Spurs’ transfer process feels slow and bottlenecked, with frustration toward Daniel Levy/club decision-making.
Notable examples
Palhinha’s goal and dominant midfield role; Papet Matassar’s constant presence; Jed Spence’s aggressive “bring me your winger” attitude; Kudus and his “City-level” solidity; Eze’s Arsenal-leaning comments; Romano/Ornstein links to Arsenal (Hincapie/Hinsapi).

2:10Jack:The two managers shake hands and this really was Tottenham's day at the Etihad.
2:14Phil:They won 4-0 here last season. They've won 2-0 here today and their fans have been singing we're top of the league and that's exactly where they find themselves after two matches.
2:24Jack:Hello everybody, welcome back to Rule the Roach podcast. Welcome back Phil. And I want to put to you just from the very top, is Thomas Frank the best manager in world football right now?
2:38Phil:All the evidence suggests yes, to be honest, given the turnaround from what we saw last season for someone else who was also in some quarters the best manager in the world. But it's quite strange to watch, isn't it? Because it's just everything seems to be working really well. And I'm sure people point out the nuanced tactical things that I'm missing, but it just seems like we're not in any trouble at all. right? That's got to be down to Frank and his lads.
3:08Jack:The Spurs captain tweeted, Spurs are currently on track to achieve 114 league points, score 95 goals and concede zero goals. Thomas Frank's Tottenham Hotspur. I mean, obviously, obviously he's having a little joke about that, but it's really quite astonishing um i know on a certain level i think probably psychologically we go into manchester city games knowing that we can win which is which is ridiculous but if we can do that as a fan base then i would imagine that the players can do that whereas in reverse you know we go into games against arsenal chelsea and liverpool and generally think well we're not going to get anything from this you know what happens so there's got to be something in that but if we take away all of the intangibles and the speculative dna laced nonsense looking at that game in isolation it's another game once again where thomas frank has been flexible he's adjusted to the opposition we've seen polinia come back into the sides to to break things up to allow the papa matassar and a bent anchor notably i would say the freedom to be relinquish from some defensive duties shall we say to play their game a bit more um and importantly break up everything that Manchester City were doing do you do you remember do you remember a game against a big side where we I mean I personally felt like you would like you were touching on that I felt completely comfortable in that game and I honestly didn't feel like at any point other than just an intrusive thought around the 80th minute where i thought about psg i didn't really feel like we were going to mess this one up at all i didn't feel it against psg either to be fair and psg are you know perhaps different kettle of fish but do you remember feeling this comfortable in the game of this magnitude
5:11Phil:not in the slightest no and even when we've kind of beaten them in the past it's often felt like It's just chaos that has gone our way, right? But this wasn't that. This was completely controlled. And as you say, it was almost like I was watching a pre-season game. And I was like, well, yeah, I kind of expected us to kind of beat these lot. It was a very sort of passive watch from my point of view, which no matter what point of the season, no matter against who, who do's or otherwise, it shouldn't really be that ever, should it? but it was and you know more of that please am I right yeah are you um where were you at with
5:50Jack:Palina because you know all the discourse prior to it was can't pass is a lump so on and so forth I think many of us were quietly quite comfortable and happy at the idea of Spurs having more of a midfield enforcer in there especially after the ease with which teams seem to cut through us last season be that systemic or be that a personnel issue yeah yeah he was unbelievable wasn't he
6:16Phil:yeah he was and I suppose he wasn't unbelievable in the sense that that's kind of what you get him for right I think there's some just because he's kind of fallen out of favor with a changing manager at Bayern doesn't mean he wasn't one of the best in that position certainly in the Premier League if not kind of European football right he had that higher status so for us to kind of be linked with him we've and and then to get him it's a master stroke really and I can't really yeah fine you know he might not be Rodri but then literally only one player is Rodri so to have him it and you know it's not necessarily about what he does but it's about what he can help the others around him do as you say Benzincol and Papamata Sarr we saw on uh Saturday how much improved they are with a player like that around them so it's more it's more about that as a as a unit right and yeah he's just he's been fantastic from from the off and like frank says he's not even properly fit yet so more to come man are you enjoying the uh the culture war that's growing
7:17Jack:out the back of palinia now obviously because you know there was quite a few quite a few people went a bit early didn't they saying that he was a a pointless signing that he was a basically making out like he was some sort of clogger weren't they but uh i'm now seeing a lot of like screenshotted tweets and it can never just we can't just enjoy it can we we can't just be happy that we're winning games it always it always has to come back to look someone said something at one point let's screenshot it and boast it you know it's just a twitter though isn't it it's just like
7:46Phil:a a ruthless war of attrition about being right and proving others wrong right even when it's kind of you know it doesn't really matter it's just so that's that but again i mean i'm fully on the side of I can't believe that there was any sort of question marks above around him anyway certainly not on loan like come on it's a win win he even regardless of how he turned out but yeah I was kind of confident that he was going to be really good for us and really useful it's quite mad to think that people have over intellectualised let's say sometimes football is quite simple you just need someone to tackle and break up play and that makes your team and your midfield better someone that can just add a bit of
8:32Jack:shit in it
8:32Phil:yeah yeah yeah people still kind of taking pot shots after he put in a brilliant performance and got a goal oh yeah well I would have liked him to pass forward a few more times I don't think there's any grounds for that is there I don't think we're talking about the same sport here or the same experience so but yeah for me absolutely delighted with him.
9:00Jack:I love that he got a goal just simply by just goreching the ball into the back of the net. Do you know what I mean?
9:07Phil:Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was a nice finish, but yeah, yeah. He loved it as well, didn't he? He loved to see that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Good lad.
9:16Jack:My toxic Tottenham trait is not the need to laugh at other Spurs fans who have said he might be good or he might be bad or whatever. Mine is more like, what if he's so good that Bayern don't want to let us buy him at the end of the thing? I'm already there. Do you know what I mean? I'm like, I know we've got an option to buy. Does that mean we can definitely buy him? Or can they still turn it down?
9:41Phil:Asking Grok in your dark moments. What does contracts mean in football?
9:47Jack:I think Grok will tell us, Paulinho left Tottenham for Barcelona. um let's let's papi matasar i don't need any excuse mate you know i don't need any excuse why is he so good like what what's what do you see him doing that is like because i just watch him i'm like he's everywhere he's breaking up play he's dropping deep to receive the ball from our defense he's carrying it forwards he's always around the box waiting to sweep up any loose balls that come out from any failed attacks or anything like that he's on the edge of the box like Like trying to keep things ticking if we get a corner or something like that, if we're knocking it about.
10:27Jack:He's just everywhere. And he seems to be just influential in pretty much everything that he does. Can there still be any doubt as to whether or not this kid, and he is a kid, is truly destined to being a top talent for us?
10:44Phil:Well, yeah. I mean, talking about sort of ruthless war of attrition about being proved right. I believe I said when we did a pod when Frank just was announced about which players we think would benefit massively or that we'd like to see or be interested to see rather in his system. And I pointed out Papamatasar because he's always had the attributes, right? And I kind of made the point that it just, whether maturity was the right phrase, but I think taking on sort of a more senior responsibility within the team. And it seems like that's what he's done, right? he's the one kind of pointing them out to players like Johnson or whomever you should have played me and you should have done that not like a massive amount like a Roy Keane levels or anything but I've definitely seen a change in his kind of um I wouldn't say attitude necessary but again he's just kind of taking more responsibility again he's always had that sort of high energy I think he just needed a proper coach to come in and kind of you know um deploy him in the right way and that's just what we're seeing and I'm so glad for it because again like like you I've always thought he's had such a massive massive high ceiling and now's the sort of time you need to see it in age I know he's still young but you know you do as a young player you still need to put a marker down younger and younger really in the way football is right and he's doing that now and he's right rightfully getting the attention and the plauders.
12:06Jack:Do you think he's one of those players that and I do wonder this because he's kind of one of those players that's just solidly brilliant and everything he does and what i'll say here is i think that whatever we talk about the 115 charges and the way in which their money is generated and where it comes from fine but one of the things i will say about manchester city is despite their endless riches what they're quite good at doing is not often going for they got a bit burnt by robinio and that was a different ownership model anyway back then but they don't really go for the big superstar thing Harland sure they brought him in but that was an opportunity that presented itself because of his contract and everything like that coming to an end what they tend to do is just buy pretty kind of solid decent players that aren't flashy that aren't somebody that kind of have a have a an incredible match of the day highlights real a lot of the time anyway who are just really really solid good footballers and I kind of feel like Papi Matassar because obviously he's playing for Spurs at the moment and he's sort of been in and out of the side to this point is somebody that suffers from I mean it's to our benefit because if people underestimate him it's great but he suffers from the fact that he's not out there kind of banging in worldies constantly all that sort of thing he's just a player that sort of does everything within his wheelhouse really really well and what he does within his wheelhouse is a lot of the time just quite should we say boring things do you know what i mean just being everywhere being somebody that can that is available keeping the ball moving recycling possession all that type of thing breaking up opposition attacks he's often not somebody that's doing like a that we're even seeing from like water at the moment for example who can like dink lovely kind of 30 yard cross field passes through a defense to to an attacker he's not doing that type of thing but I think it often tends to I don't I seldom ever see Papsar for example appear on like a TNT or whatever other aggregators graphics talking about exciting young players within the league whereas he's still what 21 22 years old he might be a little bit older than that now it might be about 23 actually but still I don't really hear much chat around him um do you think that is because of who he is as a player do you think it's just so far you know maybe he hasn't shown that much to the to say to people outside of Spurs if you get what I'm getting at yeah yeah
14:43Phil:I think it's one of those things where he probably doesn't stand out at the top of any like stats list, right? Because that's just not really the sort of player or function he has. He's very much an eye test player. And I don't mean that because his stats are bad or anything like that. I just mean that when you're watching a game and you're like, it's one of those players you come away with thinking, Richie got the goals, whatever. But Pat Matasol was everywhere. And you see it when you're there. And you see it as a supporter of the team he plays for more than anyone else. You just might not kind of notice it otherwise.
15:18Phil:I think it's a bit of that. But yeah, great. To our benefit, you're talking about Polinia and his release clause. Like, what's Pat Matassar's contract? I think he's probably going to be due another one soon, right? He's probably only got three years left or something.
15:32Jack:Did we not give him a new one last season? I can't remember. I've blocked a lot of that out. Yeah. I'm pretty sure we gave him a fairly decent one not long ago. But I agree with you, if he continues in this sort of vein of form, then he's surely kind of on the up. I mean, is there anything more you would want to see from him to see him truly kind of... I mean, would you say right now he is undroppable? Or do you think if we do sign whoever, a Bilal Alkanus or something, that's sar out the team?
16:06Phil:I think it'd be hard to, wouldn't it? Yeah, but again, I suppose the thing with Frank and what he's already shown in his short period here is his adaptability and the fact he'll use different setups, different players for different challenges. So that's the only kind of reason where you think, oh, maybe a player that's been playing well wouldn't feature. But then, you know, that being said, what scenario in whatever game you're playing, you know, it might be an early League Cup game or something, fine. but in a Premier League or like the Champions League when would it not be good to have him playing you know it would be someone else it'd be probably Bentecourt who might drop out rather than him right it's just because he covers so much ground he does so much in that sense that yeah I'd be surprised if he's not the first name on the team sheet certainly in the midfield
16:57Jack:Another first name on the team sheet Jed Spence who have you seen how much he's rattled opposition fans with his I think he says something like bring me bring me your winger or something like that he said um I mean what a player he is right
17:13Phil:yeah definitely and again I mean that that's the sort of thing where certain players um can come a cropper with that sort of thing but I just feel like the way he is that's what gets him going that's that's that belief right I don't want any kind of um winger no matter who they are to be able to go past me and I have that belief in myself that they're not going to so he just reinforces that reinforces that right so yeah again I don't have a problem with it if another player was doing that for another team it'd probably rattle me but you know again I can sort of being closer to it than others well I'm not not being closer to Jed Spence but him him playing for my team I can see why it benefits him to kind of speak that way and you know someone might go through him or go past him or whatever but that's that's not really the point is it it's about just reinforcing and keeping that
17:59Jack:belief going he ain't scared of anyone is he that's all he shouldn't be that's the thing you
18:04Phil:shouldn't be and that goes back to your point about we go to Man City and we'll be like oh we'll probably win here regardless of who it is but then we seem to be timid at um you know the Emirates or Stamford Bridge it we need more Jed Spence you know to counteract that right he's going to go to these places and be like well I don't care who I'm playing against or where I'm playing against we want more of that we want that attitude to spread throughout our team more so So yeah, keep doing it, mate. I think we definitely need more options.
18:34Jack:We need more squad depth. I think we need more quality. I think we can sort of say that. We definitely need a creative player with Maddison being out, Kulisevsky being out for an indeterminate period of time. I mean, would we even call Kulisevsky a true creator, creative player? I don't know. He's still a bit of a conundrum, isn't he? but the start to the season so far I don't think it's just copium I don't think it's just getting a bit too overexcited it's sort of reaffirming for me that we actually do have quite a good team we actually got quite a good squad not squad per se but maybe like a good at least a strong start in XI and they were definitely underperforming last season at least in the Premier League so um can can you forgive me for like i know it's for i get as a stuff morgan gibbs why the stuff we'll talk about today that's kind of flip-flapping with with spurs and our transfer dealings and our protracted transfer dealings but in terms of like not wanting to just be perpetually frustrated about transfer windows and who spurs are or aren't signing we should say I'm actually feeling quite positive and pretty optimistic about what this squad might be capable of I'm like drastically revising in my own head what we might be capable of because there was me thinking if we well if we don't add maybe two or three more players we'd probably be lucky to get into the top eight but now I'm looking at this thinking actually maybe we could be and the crucial thing is if we don't get any big injuries we don't get any big injuries I kind of can see has been capable of finishing in the top six.
20:17Jack:Do you know what I'm getting at?
20:19Phil:Yeah, yeah. I know exactly what you mean. And I think, I feel like we've been in this position before though, where we started the season quite well, probably quite a few times over the last few years, right? Where we've been like, oh, could we and all that? But you know, two games in, not conceding a goal, having scored five goals. That's really good stuff, obviously. The question still will always be, okay, you think about it, if this carries on for another few more games, maybe conceded a goal or whatever, but we're up there. And then Gary Neville gets asked the question, are Tottenham a contender, which invariably will be asked so he can say no.
20:53Phil:The reason for no will be the lack of depth. Because you say we've got a good squad. I think we've got a good 13, maybe 14 sort of players. When below that, that's when we kind of struggle and we need a full squad, right? We need more depth to be able to kind of see off the challenges that are going to be ahead. It's not necessary about player profile in terms of a 10. Yes, we obviously do need that because we haven't come up against a proper low block good team. Burnley sort of tried it but just didn't really have the wherewithal to withstand it. So that's when we'll need or we'll see the need for a proper sort of incisive 10, right?
21:39Phil:But I know what you mean. I mean, it does suddenly kind of put things into perspective a little bit, that there's different ways to play. But yeah, I mean, I'm still kind of, if I'm going to get properly excited about that, we're going to do something special and do something big. We do need some more sort of experience as well and sort of a bit of quality more to be able to kind of change the game or kind of rest players. You know, that's a big one. That's a big mistake that we didn't make last season. We weren't able to rest players because we didn't have that depth. we were scared to use that depth so i think it is more about those kind of things hey chicago class it up with crocs you know back to school is coming in fast so why wait to find your new fave footwear step into a local croc store and step into your new look try it style it make it yours because the right pair doesn't just show up it shows off first day fits handled Walk out ready for whatever's next.

23:39Jack:There's just, I'm just struck by this sense. And maybe this is a bit of an eye testy thing or whatever. Eye testy.
23:51Jack:My face is up here, mate.
23:57Jack:It's just, I'm struck by this sense where I'm watching this and I just feel like it's really really solid it's like and I was hoping it would be like this and I hope that this isn't just some kind of like confirmation bias on my part that I'm playing into here but it feels like the early days of Pochettino again it feels like all of a sudden because I when I think about I think about Mourinho right and we did have a we had a great run at the start under Jose Mourinho but it still all kind of felt a bit built on sand didn't it again see or so obviously Nuno Espirito Santo is what it is Antonio Conte we had a lovely run towards the end of a season we finished in the top four you know got one over Arsenal and had a good laugh about it but again it still always felt a bit like wow this is nice we played really well this week if only we can keep it at that level then that'll be really grand what it feels like we've got straight away as we had with Pochettino when he came in what Frank has done immediately is just raise the floor of the team it just I can't I can't recall seeing a Tottenham team work this hard and fight for one another as much as these lot are doing right now and it doesn't feel what i will say is and i know this sounds like a quite a wild thing to say of winning two nil away at the etihad but it doesn't even feel like we're being that flashy it just feels like we're just playing in a really solid quite like we're just doing the basic things really well again and again like I say I haven't seen that since Pochettino the point I'm driving at mate is that like it just feels we were having a conversation weren't we with our good friend Charlie off air um how we were saying that like even Romero feels like a new player now within this team within this system within this new I guess generation of spurs that we have and again you can liken that back to we don't think of like an avb janvertongan as being the janvertonga that played under pochettino and became one of our greatest ever defenders probably in many respects like was just a true club icon at least if we're not going to say legend a true club icon it sort of feels like players like romero are going into that arc a bit and and dare i say the uncomfortable truth behind all of this is as a lot of people said is when lorise when kane when son are gone that's truly when we will start to feel like a new team and i just i just wonder if like as much as i want to praise thomas frank and i want to sort of acknowledge the fact that he does seem to have like galvanized a certain spirit within this team rejuvenated a few of these players richarlison a notable example of that bentan kerr we're looking at you know romero We were just talking about him just then, right?
27:11Jack:What I also want to kind of think about is the fact that with those big players gone, those big personalities, again, Lloris Kane, Sonny now, it's an era where maybe a lot of these players are aware of the fact that it's time for us to step up now and be the guys at this club. I definitely feel that energy from Pedro Porro as well. He's always been a forthright, conscientious, kind of up for it player, but it feels definitely now like Poro is taking it upon himself to be one of the main figureheads at this club. I mean, there's quite a lot of stuff, a lot of different tangents there that I'm kind of touching onto, mate.
27:50Jack:But do you sort of follow my thread? Do you get where I'm coming from?
27:55Phil:Yeah, yeah. And I think that it is, as you say, it's the point of you join Tottenham and you're playing with Kane and you're playing with Sonny. It's their club. They then go. Now it's your club. and you know someone like Romero who was sort of you know question marks whether he'll stay or not signed a long-term contract he's now here it's now his club and I think that that that just you know um ingratiates yourself to the to the fans certainly but also the club to you suddenly you feel responsible and again this maybe can point to what we're just saying about Pat Matassar now he's the kind of guy who's been here a long time and he's the one who's like well actually I'm not just the kind of a young player who's kind of in and out of the team or kind of a a spare part.
28:36Phil:I'm the guy. Same with Jed Spence. I've now made it. I'm now going to lock in this position and I'm going to be this person. And, you know, again, going back to kind of what you were saying at the start of that, the idea that we are winning, I know we've won two games, fine, but this is what we're talking about. We've done it with solidity, right? We haven't done it with, remember under Ange when it was all chaos and, you know, we probably could have lost most of those first 10 games that we played, but we managed to kind of pull something out of the bag. It was never really controlled. We're winning through control, and it's not that we're relying on what if Kane's ankle goes, what if Sonny has an off day.
29:18Phil:It's just kind of working as a unit. And again, you know, that can still change with the different personnel coming in and out. But that's what's really encouraging, isn't it? We've got solidity for the first time in ages. And, you know, it's the rebuild. that we've been laying the foundations for a few seasons, right? And now that's kind of the concrete set a bit, right? And the foundations are properly taking shape. That's what it feels like. Yeah, it remains to be seen what we do for the rest of the window. Still do think we need to kind of do something, partly because we've just been embarrassed a little bit publicly.
29:56Again, we'll get onto this in a minute,
29:58Phil:but winning games is the best tonic for anything. Those sorts of things don't really matter when you start winning games. But yeah, I still think we need to add to it in short.
30:11Jack:Do you think a lot of this, again though, do you think there's an air of over-intellectualising this stuff? when if we were to Occam's Razor it, we've added Jaupelinha, who is somebody that can disrupt, can enforce. And we've added Mohamed Koudous, who, as John said the other day, Lily White Rose, feels like, and he does, I thought this was a bang on observation. He feels like a Manchester City level player. He feels like the type of player that you see City by. That's just kind of slipped through the net because I certainly wasn't. I mean, were you expecting Kudus to be quite as, I mean, superb as he has been?
31:02Phil:No, because I've seen bits and pieces of him. Again, I've never watched West Ham and I've only seen them against us, really, from what I remember. So you get a sense of a player and you think, oh, he's this really mercurial kind of skillful player who can bang them in and go past the man. What I didn't realise is how, again, it's that word again, how solid he is. So not only is he the guy who can go around someone, He's someone who can play up the line and stick to, and he'll just muscle his way through as well. So again, half of one of those players or the Mercurial side, that's who we usually get.
31:31Phil:Someone who's like, oh, good, but can drift in and out of the game. Man City gets the players who are both solid and Mercurial. So yeah, it's a great point from John that, yeah, he's way more brilliant than I kind of thought he was. He's put in a really good defensive shift as well, isn't he? Yeah, that's what I mean. He just seems to have that kind of, again, that sort of responsibility and that kind of, he's a proper player, isn't he? I don't mean proper, you know, football man play, but he's just, he's got everything.
32:03Jack:Proper player him.
32:04Phil:Yeah. He's stuck in, people bounce off him, but it's true, isn't it? He just, he just has that. He just has that.
32:13Jack:reminds me now i'm my brain's in the proper place of do you remember that tweet that went massive when that guy was like i was just using my phone at the urinal and the old boy next to me said put your phone away and have a have a proper piss
32:29Phil:a proper proper piss it doesn't make sense if you heard that but then you that it really does make sense in a way ironically i think he's i think that old geezer was talking about mindfulness right yeah exactly i don't think he realized i don't think he realized he he was talking about
32:49Jack:mindfulness when he said that but he was it's zen be present just have a moment clear your brain
32:55Phil:yeah clear your brain brain and your bladder
33:03Jack:um we will like for anybody that's like sitting there waiting for me to be a bit more like bloody daniel levy we can we can do a bit of that i mean like i say i i'm in a stage in my life where like i've been doing podcasts for over a decade now and a large part of those podcasts is me saying bloody Enoch why don't you buy some players you know I don't know if I've got the energy again maybe I'm part of the problem but let's talk about Ezza because they've unveiled him they had a big kind of continental type unveiling didn't they bringing him out onto the pitch ahead of their game with Leeds he's come out and said quite a lot of stuff you know there's been talk about phone calls that sort of thing you know um to basically calling up arteta personally and begging for arsenal to sign him because he didn't want to go to spurs basically he said this thing today like you know about essentially about him getting released from arsenal and that his mum prayed for him every day and she said it would always come true that he'd be back for arsenal that type of thing right so i'm not here to like scoff at that or make fun of that i think on a human level that's good for the guy and whatever fair play to him i will i have to say though and you know maybe this does make me part of the problem and everything but like i don't want a lad i don't want a fella at our club who i know people will say players don't they're not supporters in the same way but but there are obviously a few and this lad obviously loves Arsenal and is in love with Arsenal, right?
34:50Jack:It softens the blow for me massively knowing that he is this much of a rank gooner. Do you know what I mean? He's not going to give 100 % for the shirt every game, is he? Because there'll be a bit of him in the back of his head that thinks I don't even like Tottenham anyway. And I know that sounds ridiculous, but I genuinely think that's a bit true. Do you know what I mean?
35:10Phil:Yeah, well, if it's all come out like that he's... And all right, you could say she's a bit of PR and he would have said the opposite if he joined Spurs and whatever. But yeah, I know what you mean. What it is, it's just about coping with the kind of, as I said before, the embarrassment of it is right. And I think that's fine. As Thomas Frank said, he was like, I don't want players who don't want to play for this shirt. And that's probably much as underlined the point as you can make it, right? All that stuff about, oh, you know, I left Arsenal when I was this and, you know, what did he say? it was meant to be.
35:43Phil:I bore off with all that, lads. I can't really be bothered with all that sort of stuff. You've gone to Arsenal, fine. You've got your deal. I don't really blame him in this. He loves Arsenal, whatever. He wants to go, fine. I don't really blame Parrish or Palace with this. I have to say, by the end of last week, I was absolutely raging, mate. Daniel Levy. yeah more that's more so than i usually am i have to say and it's not like i'm a massive like you know levy apologist or anything like that but something just went in me that i've i have to say i've always loved ezra since he was at qpr you know i mean we linked with him then and all that sort of thing i've always really sort of enjoyed watching him and joining him as a player um i did sort of feel that maybe that was that one was slipping away you just know when it's kind of gets protracted like that you just feel like something's probably not not not as people say is um I was just I just thought I was I was just so sort of disappointed in what how the club was being run again I think it just really brought it all into sort of focus for me and again you know it's not so much really that he went to Arsenal I'm sure that doesn't you know help in the grand scheme of things in my overall sort of annoyance because I thought he was going to Arsenal anyway and then it dropped off then and suddenly we're back in for him um I just I was just really kind of um furious with daniel levy that he hadn't managed to get this one over the line frankly spent so long on it as well it's not so much that you didn't get it done you pull you know this has all been talked about and it all really feels like it's a bit of water under the bridge in terms of the the the immediacy of things now um and i don't feel as kind of angry about it as i did but it was just what it what it really did it really just poked that bruise about whether we are actually serious or not.
37:39Phil:And, you know, the Morgan Gibbs white one, you can make excuses as to why that happened. You can do that for Ezza as well. Both of them, not a good look. And that is where I was kind of getting to, you know, Daniel Levy's been sort of front and centre to a lot of stuff this pre-season and since the end of last season, more so than he probably ever has done. He's not been on the TV every day or anything, but there's still been a lot of, we've heard a lot from him. And then for us to that to then sort of conflict with how we've actually gone about our business or not, as the case may be, it just completely sort of tore up any sort of shred of belief I have in him to kind of carry us forward.
38:22Phil:And we seem to be going forward, you know, just in spite of him. It just seems like now it's time for him to properly move out of the way. Right. Right.
38:29Jack:Well, because so few things are kept quiet in football anymore, right? And this is a point that I'm seeing kind of echoed around through various different parts of the football media right now is that Romano and Ornstein and the like are ruining football, if you like. I don't really agree with that. It's just they're just a natural, they're just a product of the environment, right and uh the fact that nothing does say secret in football anymore means that we can't you can't be messing around you can't be having these protracted you know barely even worked at the best of times before the internet morphed into what it is today where it's pretty much 24 7 information beaming into our subconscious I just I don't I don't I don't think you can sit about and have the entirety of the football press watching your every move as you try to eke out another deal for let's be honest one of Palace's greatest ever players like I think Palace were pretty upfront they they stated early doors and what's an example of that is giving him a 68 million pound release clause that's the sort of amount of money that they want for him right that's stated it wasn't a secret that arsenal all right we didn't know exactly maybe the timings august the 10th is when they pretty much agreed and signed sealed and delivered all but this deal with eza but we all knew we weren't blind to the fact that arsenal had been talking to him pretty much all summer said he was one of their top targets and would likely bring him in if they got a couple of faces out of the club um yeah talk about Martinelli or a trossard or somebody like that needing to go before they brought Ezer in and then obviously it stood to reason didn't it as soon as Havertz was ruled out for what the season or whatever it is that he's got and does he have an ACL as well or
40:29Phil:something I can't remember I don't know I've heard conflicting reports about that but yeah
40:32Jack:at that point yeah a significant injury at least anyway it was it's the reason that they'll be like all right well we'll get Ezzer in now but again like you say it's there is a lot of copium to be had with this situation like I say the fact he's a he's a he's a died in the world Arsenal fan he is one of those players that slipped through the net seemingly that isn't just a professional doing a job he seemingly was motivated by this this personal mantra this personal kind of mission to get back to arstel one day um so again on a on a on a very human level fair play to the lad like whatever i know the the old drill tweet of you do not have to hand it to isis under any circumstances like you you get what i'm getting at right but But the fact that it's egg on our faces is frustrating.
41:32Jack:The fact that just this morning, just this morning, Fabrizio Romano has said that Spurs are working hard on a deal to get Hincape, Hinsapi, or however you pronounce it, over the line from Bayer Leverkusen. And Ornstein's just come in, just literally as we start, I don't know if you've seen it, mate, just literally side recording this, basically saying that he's off to Arsenal as well now. which is kind of, I mean, when does their spending stop, by the way? Like, how are they able to continue to do this with PSR? I mean, I don't really want to get into that. I don't want to know. But they are spending a lot of money.
42:07Jack:It's another one they've nabbed from us. I'll be honest, I'm not that arsed about this. Whatever, I'm sure he's very good. He plays at Bayer Leverkusen. But right now, I'm not really kind of losing my arse thinking, we need another left back or left centre back, whatever it is that he is quite happy with dan so happy with spence being there a dog he's coming back he's fantastic i want to see us i would be i would be frustrated if we had another 60 70 million whatever it is to drop on a player and what we did drop that money on was a defender before the window closes as opposed to getting somebody else up top who can chip in a bit who can chip in with extra goals extra assists add that kind of creative element to this team because we shouldn't be in this position.
42:52Jack:And we do find ourselves in this position staring, staring down the end of August now, staring towards the transfer window, slamming shut, as people say. It's never just kind of pulled gently to a close, is it? It's slammed shut. But here we are again. Here we are again, scrabbling around. Are we going to get this lad from Leicester? Are we going to get this lad from monaco um are are we going to get in tyler dibbling or something like that like why why is it that we're in this position again i understand i understand it the morgan gibbs white thing didn't go the way we wanted it to the eza deal who at the start of the window we were hearing we apparently didn't even want anyway um but still eza that didn't go the way we wanted it to why are we still in a place where no matter who these committees are whether it's langer whether whether it's Venkateshin, whether it's Levy, whether it's whoever, Paratici, that's sorting out deals.
43:49Jack:Like whoever it is that's sorting these things out, why is it always that we find ourselves in this same position where, great, we lost out on Ezi, that's a shame, let's bring in the next guy. The next guy on the list who we've already done some exploratory kind of conversations into his club with and we can bring in. Why does it always feel like it's so frantic with us, like we're scrabbling around in the mud? Do you know what I mean?

45:10Phil:Watch terms and more at AppleCard.com. this episode is brought to you by google chrome you think you know a browser but gemini and chrome that's new it can help you with practically anything on the web like restoring a vintage motorcycle from a 50-page restoration block or finally break down that long article you've had open for weeks gemini and chrome is here for it ready to make anything online make sense there's no place like chrome check responses set up required compatibility and availability varies 18 plus yeah i do know what you mean and i think the answer is like in any business when things slow down it's about bottlenecks right so yeah lango and paratichi and vinay van kateshen can do these you know exploratory work they can have the committees you can identify the players you can get all the kind of things in a rope for the deal to then be agreed but if they all go through one person who then spends a week pouring over every minutiae of every deal just for his own kink let's be honest that's what it is well that's what it's looking like at this point which is why we just waste time it's one thing to lose the players right and I think it was was it James Moore's tweet about um Morgan Gibbs White didn't happen then and then you know James Madison then gets injured and then Havert's injured one day later they sign Ezza that's the problem it's not necessarily about the you know Langer's fault or whoever whoever it's just we seem to move so slowly now just for balance there might be something else on here that we're actually two Spurs tinted glasses to see is that there is a pecking order to this as well right we want the players that are going to be good enough to get to take one of the spots of the teams above us, right?
47:00Phil:That's got to be your kind of aim in the transfer window, right? If that's the case, then those other teams are going to want to buy those players as well. And we just simply don't have the draw. I mean, you know, in theory, we've got the same draw as Arsenal in many ways, right? Premier League, London, Champions League. So we don't have the same luster as Arsenal. We know that. We know for whatever reason that their sports brand PR our wing of their company does them a lot of good if their football doesn't, we just leave it too late. And again, we fall foul. We can work in science as much as possible because we want so-and-so player.
47:43Phil:Ezra's a great example of this. But the player wants to go to a, quote, bigger team or his preferred team, who will probably give him more money as well, by the way. Let's not ignore that. so we do all this kind of hard graft in the background and then his agent's like oh by the way Arsenal or hit all the player himself Spurs have agreed this do you want to just slightly up it and he'll come to you instead yeah fine good what does that mean you know how do we change that should we stop going for these massive targets I'm talking around in corners now you know I'm sort of thinking out loud here but should we just not go for these kind of big players that we know are going to have challenged to get them or um stick at it and hopefully one of them comes off i don't know i don't really know the answer to that i still that all being said and i'm going to contradict myself again i can't take i can't track my contradictions here but regardless of all that that deal for ezra was there to be done i still believe that we just dragged our heels and let ourselves kind of swoop in that it was there to be done when that when that um release clause was in play, but we wait until after it expired.
48:52Jack:I mean, there's a very good example of what you were talking about prior to just the other bit at the end there, is this Nico Paz that we seem to have put a lot of time and attention into trying to sign from Cuomo, the young sort of Argentinian number 10. I mean, he looks an unbelievable player. He looks wonderful. The sort of player you drop into this Spurs team and think, God, we mean business if we sign him. um and there's there's essentially the discussion seemed to be that we ended up meeting como's 60 million pound so 70 million euro valuation of him last night and he's just basically said no because real madrid have got an option to buy me they want me to just play here for another season so i'm getting competitive it's essentially like it's essentially like a loan for real madrid I'm pretty sure he came through Madrid's academy anyway.
49:44Jack:Como bought him as a youngster with a first refusal for Madrid to buy him back. And I'm pretty sure Madrid just said to Como, yeah, we'll meet that. We'll meet the valuation next summer. Just let him carry on playing for you for now. It's one of these things, in some ways, I do feel for the club. At the end of the day, the thing is, I am a Spurs fan. I love this club. I don't want to add to the voices of people that are being like, we're useless, we're rubbish, why can't we do anything right? I love the fact that we are identifying players like Nico Paz and thinking, we want a player like that.
50:28Jack:We want somebody that's brilliant. Arsenal haven't gone after him, Liverpool haven't, so on and so forth. Maybe we can be the ones that get in there. And so I do feel bad for the club. And it makes me quite sad that we are getting mugged off as much as we are this summer, that things like that are happening. But on the flip side of that,
50:51Jack:isn't that Peretici's job? I'm sure he's been the one that's been overseeing this type of deal, right? Surely Peretici just speaks to somebody close to Nico Paz and says, look, if we meet this valuation, is the lad likely to come to us? Does he fancy it? Does he fancy the Premier League? And then they'll say, no, I think he's going to hold on for Madrid, to be honest with you. Then so we're not wasting like clearly a good couple of weeks again, chasing after this lad who, once we actually agree to cough up and pay up for, doesn't want to come to us.
51:26Phil:Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you do wonder with this stuff about how much of this is actually true. Like the kind of, if you look at like the, you know, going back to your point about Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano, about how they kind of report things. It's all just a variation on the theme, right? There's a kernel of truth in it. Spurs have approached so-and-so. Deal's not done. Maybe we walked away at that point. You know, that's the thing. I don't think that's necessarily true, especially if Ornstein's kind of reporting it. He's usually good at kind of fact-checking everything and double-sourcing things, whereas Romano probably doesn't need to do that.
52:01Phil:He's not held to the same sort of journalistic standards. But yeah, with this Nico Paz thing, it as you say it should be pretty simple to be like we like him how much would it cost that much okay yeah we could offer that and then we're as you say approach the player now he don't want it and Real Madrid would probably be like well you're not we've got first option on him no one's signed him but us that's it done why is there no new name in the kind of um frame again it's just it it's how much of it is true how much of it is just regurgitated shit we don't know right but But yeah, it's just my point is Madison's been injured for how long?
52:39Phil:Morgan Gibbs-White fell through how long ago? And the Morgan Gibbs-White thing was done bar the kind of rubber stamping of it. But why have we not managed to kind of approach anyone else or get anything done since then? It's just the time. Again, if Ezzer comes in, then it feels a hell of a lot better. And it's like, okay, fine. You know, we worked out the deal that needed to be done. It was done. We might have paid over for him because he had a release clause. but we matched it and got it done. But we don't. But we don't. And, you know, let's be real. It started off well. We get to around Christmas, injuries start falling through or we get to November or something and we're like, we need to sign players on the 1st of January to make up for the mistakes that we made in the summer.
53:23Phil:Because how many times, Jack, have we said that? Probably every season, right? Certainly since like... And then we say, why weren't these deals done in November
53:31Jack:ready to go in the 1st of January, you know?
53:33Phil:So that's what, that's going back to my first point about being so furious about missing out on Eza because it's just, again, it's just repetitive and becoming tedious and you question your own life choices as to why you're getting so sort of embroiled in it when it's just the same patterns repeating itself. But yeah, so that's where we are. Do you think Savino happens?
54:00Jack:What's your gut feeling?
54:04Phil:my gut feeling is that there's a deal to be done there I don't really kind of buy the oh there's a higher up at Man City who's putting a block on it I mean I don't know about that that does that doesn't sit really spring true it seems like Man City are trying to kind of get Rodrigo or get someone else in right then then they can sell him I don't really buy any of this kind of other stuff and you know why wouldn't they sell him for top whack they only just signed him a year ago and he's a really good player so if it was another team I'd probably say yeah I can see that one going through like last few days of the window if not on the final day with us and how we've kind of approached things recently in our inability to get things over the line I don't know I mean it is kind of ironic just as a side point here that for once you know we've always been like we don't have any money to spend or the money we do have we spend really badly or whatever I do think there's something in the fact that we've got this massive kind of influx of cash sitting there that we're trying to spend and we can't spend it now because again Daniel Levy is so bad at spending money he'll spend it if he can he'll spend it on the wrong players or he just won't be able to get deals over the line and that's again adding to the frustration that even when we've got this windfall again it's rumored or whatever but let's just go down this thought track we still can't get it done jack and then you're just like daniel step out of the way mate you're the problem i'm afraid
55:31Jack:now but you won't really and this is a we all of these conversations they always end up back at this same place of how do we get rid of daniel levy do we protest do we you know appeal and to the whoever it is what they call the tavistock group who own e-nick like can they get rid of Levy can because it does I don't know it does feel like it's there's not even a variation on the theme it's literally the same theme every single transfer window the same thing happens every single time and we get told that there will be some other appointment made that Levy how many times have we been told Levy's stepping away from football operations like how many times
56:14Phil:have we heard that down the years you know he's moving he's moving further away from it but he's still in the most important position with it all like what what like for example right other than
56:25Jack:that hideously cringy video of them talking about red wine what is Venkateshan actually doing at the club do you know what I mean like and I appreciate we're sat here we don't see the inner workings of the club and all this type of thing but for a guy who is supposedly brilliant at bringing the club and the fan base closer together so on and so forth surely the first sort of order of business for him would be greater visibility, greater visibility as to what the hierarchy are doing, greater visibility as to how the club is operating, what are our hopes and dreams for the season? Like, Arsenal, we hear all the time, we want to win the big stuff.
57:04Jack:What do we hear from Spurs? Nothing. It's all left to the manager. It's all left to the manager. For Thomas Frank to come out and have his words picked apart, because what's he supposed to do? Yeah, he said at the start of the season, we're going to try our best, but we are going to lose games and people need to be prepared for that and obviously what gets jumped on thomas frank has no faith in tottenham thomas frank says they will lose games all that type of stuff and you know the proof is in the pudding so far isn't it he's he's kind of doing his talking on the pitch and that's grand and i really like that about him but why is it still as a club operationally speaking we seem to just it's just shrouded in such secrecy everything is just and and just seems to make no sense seems to make no like who is buying what who is doing what we've got this loose idea that Langer uses data to identify players that we we might want to sign but then what we got Fabio Peratici strolling around with white earphones talking into them at matches and wherever else and then you got Vinay Venkatesh from what just having a glass of wine with Daniel Levy every match day like what what are they all doing who is involved in what It just doesn't make sense, mate.
58:18Jack:It doesn't make sense to me.
58:19Phil:Also, again, let's revert to our favourite cynical thing, Occam's Razor, right? Occam's Razor suggests that Daniel Levy has just done, or it's just happened. The same thing that always happens is the big sell to someone, Finca Teshin in this sense, come in, you can do this. Yeah, you'll have responsibility to this. Day one or a week later, it's not what you signed up for. And it's just the same. It's all a bit of bluster. It's all a bit of, you know, talk it up. But actually, at the end of the day, Daniel Levy says what happens and no one else is going to tell him any different. That seems to be what's happened again.
58:57Phil:I do think that in terms of him kind of stepping aside, I do think there's probably a, again, big if this money is sitting there waiting to be spent to push us on. If he doesn't manage to do it, then I think there'll be questions asked. And it won't be anything to do with fan frustrations. It'll be, well, hang on a minute. We've put this fund in here. what's happened with it why haven't you kind of pushed on like we wanted you to oh but but he wanted to go to arsenal's like step aside fella so i think that's that's the kind of thing that i could see happening um on another note i said what happens otherwise would you get james madison mate with his new youtube channel get him get him up there get him to sit in on what's happening some behind the scenes stuff with a gopro you see i um i tweeted him the other day
59:43Jack:yeah because he shared that he was starting his new youtube channel i said uh we come on my podcast talk about it james you know it might get you some might get you some uh new viewers you know um a few people picked up on it as well which was quite nice i got the old uh thanks for lending me your lamborghini jack um you're a really good guy all that stuff which is quite funny look the thing is i know i've gotten quite animated there and I've sort of wound myself up a bit talking about Tottenham's transfer dealings and all that type of thing. But I'm actually still, regardless of all that, I still feel pretty good about Spurs.
1:00:21Jack:I feel pretty good about us. I feel pretty good about having, you know, funnily enough, having just won away at the Etihad in a really solid, convincing fashion. I'm looking ahead to the season thinking, we could be really good here. We could be really good. We might. do you want my hot knee jerk we're doing quite well at the moment new manager bounce we just won a couple of games on the trot take go on always I think we're going to go deep in the Champions League that's what I'm going to say
1:00:55Phil:oh a nice little Tommy Frank masterclass focusing on how all these slow teams play I think we're going to go deep imagine if we won it
1:01:07Jack:do you know what I tell you what it'd be good like because Arsenal are looking all right aren't they but imagine if they won the if they won the Premier League but then what a couple of weeks later we went and won the Champions League it would just be yeah that I quite like that I quite like that on a real one they cannot be like did you see them all doing the Jokera celebration into the camera, all those grown men. No, I didn't watch him.
1:01:37Phil:I just saw a clip of it on Match of Day 2 today. I was just watching the Palace game and the United game today. But I just looked up and saw that. And I was like, I'm not watching that. Also, they always slap up the newly promoted teams. It's not an indicator of anything for me. And he still watched the Corbens.
1:01:58Jack:Did you see all those fellas celebrating, though? Have you seen even just the screenshot of it? No, no, no. they put the camera in a sort of that corner of the crowd you know where they yeah and we're talking like men our age if not older mate or doing gioco as a celebration into the camera and i just think there's just something there's something so weird about that football club there's something so weird about them and what they are like wherever wherever you are in the country wherever you are in the country you can be walking through like a provincial shopping center provincial shopping center anywhere and uh you can see just an arsehole shirt do you mean a grown man in an arsehole shirt just pottering about i just grown men not even on the match day jack no just grown men what is it what is it about them i don't like because it's not really
1:02:52Phil:a football club is it it's that's the thing it's it's a it's a it's a brand right it's it's that it's more and the football is they don't really understand most of them don't really understand the football side of things it's all just a bit of i saw even like one of the spurs like one of the tottenham support groups i think it was in america being like you not all sort of say you
1:03:16Jack:know they're americanized and always talking no we think they're really weird as well mate like you know yeah yeah it's not americanized no they had this um so that and they attached like a photo of it to i guess it was like in a local library or something like that but it was like a you know community kind of cork board and pinned to it was this um this like a notice basically saying and it said like red army but after the e in brackets was an a so read army and it was like for any gooners who want to join like our book club come and you're just like you know yeah
1:03:56Phil:yeah yeah you're so weird you're so weird that perfectly uh illustrates the point i was just gonna make and i didn't know you're gonna say i'd never heard of that before but as as we're talking i was thinking what's the best way i can sort of metaphor i can use to describe this it's like you know at school right everyone has their team and there's that kid who doesn't really like football and sort of you know he's friends with people but he's just can't can't really sort of get in his parents just didn't let him watch it or whatever he's just not whatever and then an England tournament comes around and he's like right now's my chance and then you try and talk to him about it and he just doesn't really get it bless him, tries to but just doesn't really have the kind of the grit or the kind of again the depth of knowledge and the being and he's just sort of been like let's do an England reading club we're not into reading mate we're not into reading, we're kicking football through windows, that's what we like doing it's just that
1:04:55Jack:yeah well it's the sort that like we'd all be talking about like i mean the problem with england is right you know if kane comes off yeah you got watkins you got this but like you know we don't have any real threat and you'd be like yeah you know what what we really need to do is we need to think about signing mbappe or something like that yeah you know i mean and you just be like oh mate yeah i'm sort of just giving them a look wouldn't they as in like mate yeah
1:05:15Phil:and it's not yeah not really it's just people aren't really like chastising them for it they're just like, oh, all right, you're trying. We're not going to embarrass you, but you just don't get it, mate.
1:05:27Jack:Yeah. Do you think there's anything you have like that, mate? Do you know what I mean? No, I always turn this on myself. I'm like, is this sort of a certain thing that I try and talk about and people are like, shut up, mate. Probably my film stuff.
1:05:42Phil:Most things, I think, because I've always had, I think, a broad knowledge of lots of different things. Yeah. yeah and i've sort of before i felt like i could kind of blunder my way through a conversation about something i didn't know by using kind of you know thought structures or whatever even that i just i just think so often i'll have an opinion on something i've been like i don't actually know what that means i don't know if i've got the dates right i don't know what the names right i just so it's quite across the board i can have a good elevator conversation with people but as soon as we get off on the same floor i'm like oh whenever it comes to like you know money stuff the economy and all this i'll be like bloody tories they did that thing didn't they
1:06:25Jack:with interest rates like well i mean why what did you like inherently dislike about that oh they just they they just want the money for themselves didn't they and their cronies that's what they do and uh do that i mean but it's true i know what i'm saying is true so don't don't try and word spaghetti me. Do you know what I mean? I know that's how it all works. Bloody politicians. That's what they do. I'll tell you what, mate. Let's keep the politics out of this, shall we? Let's just talk about the ball. The ball.
1:06:56Phil:You probably need to keep the arsenal out of it as well, to be honest. I said the arsenal only in the politics sense, but I didn't mean to say I feel bad about... I don't think I've ever said the arsenal other than a
1:07:07Jack:derogatory sense. Selly on the carpet. That's what they'll be talking about their celly on the Jokeres' celly on the carpet. That's what Billy T was saying that their thing is now.
1:07:21Phil:I don't even know what that is, nor do I want to know what that is. I know what it is. I just don't. I wish that little door in my brain hadn't been opened. Thanks. Can you shut it for me?
1:07:30Jack:Well, I'll tell you what I do. I'll tell you what we do want to think about is the fact that Tottenham have got five very winnable games coming up and I back us to win all five. So signings or not, Bournemouth, West Ham, Brighton, Wolves, Leeds, even Villa. That's six games that I fancy us in. So, you know, it's not all doom and gloom. Hopefully, we'll sign a few more players. Hopefully, we'll keep this momentum up. I mean, definitely, hopefully, we'll keep this momentum up. But at the end of the day, we've just won Europa League. We've got Romero as captain. We've got some good players. we've got kudus quality there's still plenty there's still plenty to be cheerful about i think um so you know there's a bit of time to go it is annoying don't get me wrong i'm not above it all it is annoying but it's all right in it phil yeah yeah and again it is that's quite receded into the
1:08:26Phil:background really and i think it's one of those things where the transfer window you do get very sort of um interested in it when it's open obviously we don't spend a hell of a lot of time thinking about it afterwards you just kind of get on with it again like winning winning on on saturday everything else kind of cleared and that that frustration is still there but that's just a long-standing thing with topnum and its ownership and everything which i'm sure everyone has it's quite separate to what how i'm feeling right now you know i'm quite uh enjoying all the content and stuff and that's usually a good sign for me that i'm actually okay with things right rather than i can't bear to watch any of this stuff so yeah again i know we always do this We was kind of screaming to the void for a bit and then be like, well, actually, no, I want to say I'm actually positive.
1:09:10Phil:But again, how can you not be positive with what you've seen? Again, I test, right? It's all look really good. It's all just really look functional and it's only the start. So, yeah, really pleased, Jack. Let's not normalise.
1:09:24Jack:I mean, well, let's, hang on. I need to think of a way to package it. I was going to say let's not normalise winning away at the Etihad. had but I mean let's not normalize the delight of having one away at the end that's what I meant to say isn't it something like that yeah and the fact that everyone was like oh Man City are good
1:09:42Phil:and they did don't get wrong they did look good against what apparently is a terrible wolf side now suddenly I mean not suddenly they've obviously sold a few of their good players one of them to Man City but the fact that everyone was so shocked about this as well you're like well you know we do have this weird thing over them that we just beat them when no one expects us to you know, we don't beat them when they're bad, we beat them when they're good usually so I know we beat them last season but still but yeah again, just all these people being like oh well, no one saw that coming well, most Tottenham fans were quite confident going into that so
1:10:22Jack:Bun Man City Bun Arsenal do on all of you Come on you Spurs, up the Spurs. Thank you very much, Phil. Onwards and upwards. Enjoy the rest of your bank holiday, mate. Thank you, and you too, won't you?
1:10:47Phil:I'm not giving up. I am selling the building.

Jack is joined by Phil in the wake of Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Manchester City to reflect on why things feel so different under Thomas Frank. With the era of Lloris, Kane and Son now firmly in the past, it feels like the stage is set for a new generation of players to become the figureheads of the club.
We dig into the brilliance of Pape Matar Sarr, his outstanding start to the season and why he still isn’t quite being spoken of as one of the very best young midfielders in Europe.
Joao Palhinha’s arrival has brought a new level of steel to Spurs’ midfield, giving freedom to the likes of Sarr and Bentancur to flourish. There’s also chat about the Eberechi Eze deal that never was, whether his allegiance to Arsenal softens the blow, and the continuing frustration around how Spurs operate in the market.
A weekend of positives, but as ever, still plenty to chew over.
The show’s theme is Ghost Cat by Gillen.
