In short
Q&A-style Tottenham Hotspur discussion after winning the Europa League, focusing on Thomas Frank’s appointment, transfer strategy, expectations for next season, and fan attachment to rumored signings; plus lighter chat about kebabs, TV, and films.
Guests/backgrounds
Two hosts—Phil and another Spurs fan (the main speaker). They reference friends/askers (e.g., “Charlie Parrish,” “Sergio Shoreshot,” “Tom Foynes,” “Jack Cowling,” “William Gardner,” “Seamus,” “Neumann THFC,” “Peter Drury”) but no additional on-air guests are clearly present.
Key claims
Frank is a good fit because he can adapt and avoid extreme tactics; Spurs excuses about needing time to assess the squad are partly valid but also a familiar pattern. The club’s real constraint may be cash/“perfect opportunities,” not just football philosophy. Fans get too attached to targets like Eze, which breeds disappointment.
Notable examples
Eze linked to Arsenal; debate over buying Eze vs Madison; Champions League squad/homegrown rules; Spurs’ 2016-17 “great team to win nothing” (86 points, eight draws); kebab preferences (chicken shawarma, garlic/chili sauce, lemon/red cabbage).

17hello everybody welcome i don't know why i've said it in that voice to be honest um hello everyone i i've wondered i've been wondering actually why i've been hemorrhaging listeners this year and i I kind of have blamed angiopostocoglu in part and our form, but I think maybe me starting off the podcast in a sort of Timmy Mallet-esque fashion probably isn't helping, is it, Phil? I'm still here, mate. Don't you worry about that. Yeah, of course you are. Of course you are. Just me and you listening to it after you've recorded it. Don't forget my mum as well. Oh, yeah, of course. just you you sat there in your next unbranded Nike hoodie yeah a PSA for everyone who just missed out on the what was it called the final the Europa League final jacket that everyone saw and everyone can we call it a shell suit yeah probably it's probably a tag isn't it that's what I'm telling myself everyone saw them walking out and that was like oh, great, Nike, you're going to release it, and it just disappeared.
25And then suddenly, apparently today, it went on sale. You and I both missed it, and I was scrabbling around for it because not that I was, like, overly bothered about it, but, you know, when you miss out on something, it suddenly means you absolutely have to have it. That's kind of what I was. I think the kids call that FOMO, mate. Yeah, I was definitely FOMOing there. And I quickly Googled it and found it on Next for 90 quid. I was like, oh, nice one, actually. yeah I've done my usual thing and like found a loophole and everything feels better when you have a loophole right it's like we're buying Call of Duty and Sainsbury's for 25 quid um just feels better and then yeah on our little whatsapp group with dear Charlie Parrish he um coyly pointed out that you you asked why why is it on next and I was just like don't don't question it I've bought it I bought it on Klarna as well just for a laugh because it was 90 quid and it was 10 % off if you do it that way so I was like win win win and he succinctly pointed out that the reason it's 90 quid is because I didn't have any Spurs branded on it so long story short my credit rating is going to take a little bit of a hit and I've got no Spurs jacket I just like the thought you're walking around in like because it's quite it's quite a Larry Shell suit you know I mean without the context of it being a Spurs one I like the thought of you just like wandering around the ends in that Phil um yeah do you I just thought actually how long do you think before I wouldn't have noticed or I would have noticed it didn't have the cockerel on it or the Spurs branding it would have arrived wouldn't it it would have just been the fast show unlucky owl oh I don't know mate I don't know I reckon I would have put it on and been like because the whole conversation i was more distracted that it was i was having to kind of upgrade from a medium to a large which arguably i probably should have done about 10 years ago anyway if you see me in a t-shirt um but yeah a large jacket i would have been oh no the fit's actually all right it's supposed to be baggy that's fine yeah nice one and then gone out with it walked around because when you look at it you look at it once in a mirror and then you put it on you don't necessarily look down at it do you so yeah i could have been going on for for donkey's years without with an unbranded Larry Nike shell suit jacket without any Spurs emblems on it.
47But yeah, there we go. It might be one of those things where you go up Spurs and you see people be like, I think he got it on DHgate. Yeah, yeah. People shouting out next across the road at me. I mean, me being like, yeah, what? Next what? What have I done? Yeah. Well, yeah, that was quite funny. I'm glad you've seen the funny side of parting with 90 of your hard-earned pounds there, Phil. Yeah, yeah. Well, I've already cancelled the order, so we're all right. We're back to me not having a Spurs jacket. So I've just reverted to my state of an hour ago. How many of these things, just whilst we're on this, how many of these things do you reckon now just get picked up by scalpers?
33I just straight away bought it, slapped on eBay in two weeks' time when it's all sold out. Most things, right? That's the thing. I mean, I didn't even realise that was coming out. As much as I was like, oh, that's great. I've sort of been out of the loop a bit on Spurs. I've sort of had not necessarily a conscious kind of, yeah, not paying attention to it all. But I think just, as I say, winning the Europa League has just kind of changed things for me this summer. and I just haven't been sort of pouring over things. So, you know, maybe this was, there was a big lead in for this that everyone knew it was going to come out.
11But to my mind, it just sort of appeared. And yeah, dear Charlie Parrish had already bought one when I flagged it on the WhatsApp group. So yeah, maybe I was behind on it. But yeah, to your point, yeah, most things, right? It's just all bots. It's all just, it's bots selling it to other bots. Dead internet theory, mate. It's miserable, mate. it's on everything now that you see it and i've got time to go adam curtis about it i mean he doesn't even talk in his documentary anymore but uh the uh when you look at pretty much any tweet like for a while we were moaning about the fact oh it's just you know it's bots because you'll see like a pornographic image or a link to some kind of shop at the bottom of a tweet or a tweet from a famous person.
00But it's almost like any tweet now that has any sort of traction on it, you actually see bots, and they're quite clearly bots, just conversing with one another. Anyway, this is for another podcast. But it's bizarre, isn't it? It's a very strange one. How are you... You were sort of saying you've taken a break from Spurs, but in a way, and I mean, it is the literal holiday. Spurs have kind of taken a break from Spurs at the moment. Are you just enjoying this kind of moment of calm right now? Yeah, I think so. And again, it's not necessarily a conscious thing. I've just, it's just a, I'm just less stressed about the idea of Spurs achieving anything, you know, because we just have achieved something is my point.
44You know, I've kind of gone up a level and I've plateaued into this calmer place. So yeah, I think that's in part, but again, yeah. I mean, you know, there's nothing sort of coming out. the Ezza stuff is annoying because I've really kind of liked him since he was at QPR and you know the fact that we would have been linked with him and now suddenly he's of course going to Arsenal that's a bit of a bummer but it hasn't I can't say it's like bothered me you know what I mean and it's just yeah so I'm in sort of a quite a calm calm place we'll see see if that continues after this podcast not that you'll rhyme me up or anything but just talking about it might unearthed some problems.
27Have Arsenal signed him yet? Has that actually happened? Or is it one of those things that we sort of wound ourselves up about because some ITK said, oh, Arsenal quite like him as well? I don't think they've actually signed him or anything. No, I just think that they've kind of gone, their name's in the hat or in the ring for him. And all the noises seem to point to him being he wants Arsenal because obviously he was at Arsenal and they released him when he was like 14 or 15. And it really hit him hard. So, I mean, I would have said you go to their rivals and prove them wrong. But who am I to say, right?
00But yeah, so it just seems like suddenly things have fallen into place where it looks like that's just going to happen. That's my reading on it anyway. Yeah, it's not that I don't trust my own intuition because it's generally impeccable. It's served me. It's served me so well throughout the majority of my life. and uh but with Ezra it's one of these where I can't really tell if I'm just kind of really excited by the idea of him and think he's really class and hence have this like confirmation bias every time I watch him play because it seems to be quite quite a few people it's weird he seems to be a weirdly Marmite player which I just I guess what I'm trying to say is I find it quite hard to wrap my head around that because I find when I watch him he just looks like a just a remarkable player like I've said in the past on Twitter something about like oh you know we we fumbled it a bit in my opinion going for Madison instead of Eza people are negative fans like you why are digging out Madison he's a good player it's like I kind of don't mean that and I do get the context because I probably do dig out Madison a bit but I in that instance I meant it more just in that I think Eza is just, I think he's like leagues above, but that doesn't seem to be an opinion that's like widely shared.
24No, I think the anxiety of that comes around the fact that a player like Eza, as in his position, isn't seen as a priority this window. So if we've only got a certain amount of money to spend, we should be buying a six, right? I think that's the kind of, that's the opinion. to my mind you buy the best players that you can play in those positions regardless if we've got Madison and Kuliszewski who can play there as well I think I mean from my perspective I see Eza as a gem that is somehow gettable you know it's it's somehow achievable for us to get this player and he's choosing to go somewhere else which you know I don't think there's a hell of a lot we can do about it I don't think we fumbled it necessarily in a way I just think it's just not you know and he he prefers another team um so that that's that that's frustrating again he's i just see he's he's it's weird that you know he stayed last summer at palace right i think even steve parish the palace chairman said that he was surprised no one came into him came in for him because he's got such a gettable release clause you know at least they went under the sort of same release clause went to buy and everyone's understandable that parish was like But yeah, there was no interest in Ezza, which is surprising.
40So yeah, felt gettable. But I think it's down to the player choosing elsewhere by the sounds of it.
51Because I don't want to dive too much into Frank and his vision of the squad and why that might influence who we are signing. Because we have a good question on that. And this is going to be primarily a kind of Q &A-y type pod. but I just wanted to get from you your your take because I haven't spoken to you really since uh on here anyway about Thomas Frank about his appointment um you you you pumped about it you all right about it how are you feeling I think and I don't mean this necessarily as like a negative I'm not pumped about it and I think that's actually exactly what we need if you know what I mean I I think it makes a lot of sense, sensible.
31He's a good coach. He can adapt. And I think that's what we sorely miss. People say that Ange coming in was great because he was the opposite of Conte and Mourinho. To me, it was just another extreme, but in the opposite direction. We don't need extremes. I don't think football is about extremes anymore. I think that as we've seen with City, everyone's kind of remarked on this about how football has become this kind of, certainly in the Premier League, everyone is quite similar it's very competitive everyone's sort of trying to play the same way because of how the influence that Pep City has had on everyone um so there's no there's no kind of room for these these these extreme kind of approaches anymore what you do need is a is a manager that can um unlock each team and play differently so I think we're actually moving into a different era and it's strange for Spurs and again this is this might age terribly but it seems like or it's possible that we're moving into an era where actually the name of the game is that you have to adapt and we've got a manager who's perfect at that so in that sense yeah it's it's a it's a really encouraging appointment for me there's a question here from Sergio Shoreshot at Andrew Lucas 44 who says do you give a shit that Frank is manager or Or do you just spend all day singing Johnson again?
55Olé, olé. I mean, I don't think the two have to be linked, but I will say, you know, I often leave you voice notes in this fashion, Phil. My sort of faux operatic voice that I do. You can't feel about it, mate. You could be the next go compare, man. He spurs, isn't he? So I do when I'm making my coffee in the morning, I am sort of walking around Johnson again I do sing that I'm sure my neighbours are sick of it as well it's catchy isn't it it was driving me mad actually I was singing it so much I couldn't get it out of my head like in the week or 10 days after the final it just kept sort of rattling around you know you find it funny for a bit and you're like oh yeah that was good then it starts becoming like a problem but yeah to the point to the question sorry go on No, I was just going to say, because I have this, I get into these loops where I genuinely will like just sing.
57It can even just be like two or three words of a song. And I just sing it out loud over and over again as an almost like reflex to the point where I have to start like saying, shut up out loud to myself. To stop myself from doing it. To start. I sit there punching myself in the face. Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up. yeah I mean I remember the first time it ever happened to be sort of I don't know what this actually says about me but it was Michael Jackson's Bad so when that came out or when I first heard that as like a seven year old or an eight year old or something and it just got stuck in my head to the point where I was like almost in tears which I don't know if that's apocryphal about Michael Jackson or whatever but I just remember that being quite a telling like moment in my life I was like I couldn't get that I couldn't get that I couldn't stop seeing it as a kid.
51Rocking back and forth in my bunk bed. Can't sleep, Jacko will eat me. Am I bad? Does he think I'm bad? But yeah, do we care that Frank's manager? No, as you say, you sort of answered it before. It's all right. Johnson, ole, ole. I mean, banger. I've even sort of the thing is I even like here's some real state of me type insight into it I even sometimes make little noises around it and stuff like as an intermission which I'm not going to do here but uh that's I don't know no yeah yeah yeah sign up patreon.com slash rprpos and you can hear me to hear jack's inane noises face myself one it's patron is sort of it's like it's only fans for podcasters, isn't it?
43That's literally what it is. It's like, it's only fans for basically hairy middle-aged men for the most part. Yeah. So there you go. Maybe there's a revenue stream there, mate. I was just going to say, that's not me saying I get my knackers out on Patreon or anything like that. I don't, you know, don't do any of that. Let's move swiftly on from that. Okay, let's do a serious one then. Here's Tom Foynes bringing the mood down um it's a good question like him he says does the idea that frank needs to assess the squad before any transfer decisions are made sort of fly in the face of the apparent strategy that should apply regardless of the manager it just feels like usual excuses and we're barely in july what do you make of that yeah it's a good point because that's exactly what we've been told This is why you have this structure.
40I mean, is it surprising that Spurs are doing it badly? No, because that's what we do. As you say, any signings that we make should be based on how we want to play and knowing who the coach is and the coach can coach them, whoever we kind of provide them with. Certainly at this stage, it's not like suddenly you should be throwing out the whole squad of players that we've amassed because a new manager comes in and can't cope or can't use them. So with that in mind, we should have signed Kudus already, for instance. But yeah, I take the point. It does sort of fly in the face, doesn't it? And it is, yeah, I mean, we've come to expect it with Spurs, isn't it?
24That there's always a kind of an excuse. We get sold the thing. We get told literally this time, I want to win the league. I want to win the Champions League. Then it's like, oh, but all these reasons, these obstacles that we've thrown up ourselves mean we can't do anything. I mean, not to be a Levy apologist or anything like that, but to be fair to him, all he did say was like, I'd like to win the Premier League in the Champions League. He didn't actually intimate that he was going to try that hard to actually win it. He just said he'd quite like to. So, you know, he's gotten his get-out-of-jail-free card on that one already, but he built it in.
03And then Vinay was there kind of, I don't know, kissing his feet after that was a weird that was a weird interview wasn't it it was it was yeah two of those kind of alpha business types because i quite like the quiet subtext of levy constantly trying to assert the fact he was actually the boss and vinai constantly referencing the fact that they were now partners you know it was just it's a nice little game of kind of passive aggressive tennis i felt between the two of them yeah i mean in regards to that like relatively speaking compared to what we've heard from Daniel Levy before I thought it was a positive thing that they kind of did that yes there were bits in that way you're it was toe curling at points right the red wine bit was like come on mate but I think that you know if that's the kind of the the the acorn from what the the mighty oak grows in terms of better communications from the club then fine you know that's kind of how I viewed it again because I'm just not getting necessarily that caught up in all the kind of anguish of it all at the moment I am back to Foynz's sort of question I think one of the other things I would flag mate is that I feel like sometimes a lot of this stuff is sold and you've sort of touched on this already anyway to be fair but a lot of this stuff this idea we are building this strategy we have this kind of really uh almost binary thing in place where it's like plug and play almost like it's like the computer it's like a computer's motherboard and we have all these different components that plug in but it's kind of working on the assumption that like the club is this static base like like a motherboard is i need to sort of stop with this computer analogy but the point i'm trying to make is like we don't have a specific way of doing things we kind of have a way that we want to try and do things which is buying young exciting players that can play a certain brand of football, shall we say a modern brand of football, right?
05Inverted wingers and fluid positions and all that type of thing. But really, we are maybe looking into that a bit too much. And I'm not just trying to give Enik kind of a get out of jail free card because I agree. My point is, again, it's sort of to the point you've already made is that we are kind of sold a thing. We are told this is what we have now in place. when the reality is probably a bit more chaotic than that. Because I think if we even ignore the fact of any sort of signings or anything like that we aren't making right now, whether or not they fit in with this supposed strategy or vision of what the club should be or the playing staff should be, I'm not even entirely sure that Thomas Frank, as an individual, fits in with that type of thing.
55If we're talking about it being a seamless transition from Postacoglu to Frank. I don't know if it is. I don't look at Frank and think he plays the Tottenham way. And that might be my ignorance in part as to how Thomas Frank's teams play when they're a dominant force. As I've heard, his championship, Brentford, were sublime, were absolutely brilliant, were likened to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. but still um i just i just i i sort of think to form this question i i honestly think that it's probably not so much about that that's probably an excuse we're sort of saying oh no frank needs a bit of time to assess it so on and so forth there's probably some truth in that my my my sort of bigger gut feeling is really that we as we've kind of heard we are quite cash poor we don't have a lot of money to spend and thus we are waiting for the absolute perfect opportunities to arise for us before we spend any money i think that i personally think that's kind of more what it is right i don't know yeah and i think actually ali goal was on the i think it was the lab podcast i was listening to yesterday he made a good point um which i think is probably lost in all of this and probably is more of a factor than we realise about the homegrown rules for the Champions League squads that were in quite a mess in that regard.
31So it might be a part of it that, you know, Frank needs to have a look at Donnelly, needs to have a look at those young players coming back on loan to be able to make a decision as to where do we need to strengthen to be able to fill a squad up for the Champions League. I mean, you know, I don't think it's necessarily part of the plan or was part of the plan but you could kind of see the champions league qualification as actually came as at a bit of a wrong time in that regard because again i'm not saying that we planned that we had plans in place to kind of you know stay in the europa league for a bit and and then work up to it but it certainly caused us a problem squad wise right that we need to kind of um that we need to kind of fix which is just providing another barrier as to why we're going out and actually making some early moves in the market.
23Jack Cowling at Jack Cowlin 800-800-51, let's say that. What would you set as the micro and macro targets for Frank both next year and until the end of his first contract? It's really difficult, isn't it? And this is kind of a broader point about predictions preseason, right? You hear it, right? You hear like when Arsenal were like blowing the league and then they have this like coping mechanism where it's like in March or in April, you're saying if they told us at the start of the season, we'd be doing X, we'd have bitten your hand off for it. When the reality is they were top and they blew eight points or whatever.
14so it's quite hard to set any sort of targets in that regard without kind of seeing a bit more about what we are going to look like I mean you know that being said I do think Thomas Frank has a bit of a easy one I don't see it that he has to come in and win a trophy next season otherwise people are going to be like oh you're not as good as Posta Koglu he just needs to be not terrible in the league and that's really kind of helpful to him that the expectations there are so low in regards to our kind of league form and you know the reasons for that are one thing but still the fact is that we finished 17th and we got beaten so many times so I think you know it's fair to say that a again a top half finish is is is is definitely a massive improvement but then you kind of say well this squad shouldn't be finishing lower than eighth anyway right so um yeah so so mike so so early yeah top you need to finish in the european places i think i think that needs to be um a target it is quite hard to say isn't it what what is kind of like what his successful initial contract will look like um
34I mean, again, it has to be winning a trophy, right? In that time, if it's deemed to be a success. Because we're suddenly we're in this kind of post-trophy glow. I was going to say, people aren't going to like it. But I'm just, I don't know if this is exactly my opinion on the matter. But I think it's either win a couple of trophies, win a trophy or two, you know, like a League Cup and maybe an FA Cup or something like that. another Europa League or just get us back consistently finishing in the top four. And I know people hate that, but I'm simply saying that if we're finishing in the top four consistently, it's probably a sign that the club and the team are playing pretty well, especially in the strength of the Premier League is now.
20Personally, I agree with you. Personally speaking, I'd like to see us continue to win stuff, really. Yeah, and I think maybe actually it's less about positions, isn't it? Without ignoring the fact that we need to finish higher up the league than we did. Let's say actually his progress could be if Lukas Bergvold turns into an absolute, you know, one of the star players of the Premier League or certainly star young players of the Premier League. I think that's probably more of a helpful kind of barometer for his success if he's able to come in. And that leads to the idea that we're building a structure that we're starting off with young players and we want to see them develop.
56Players like Berth, Valgray, and we talked about it separately, Pape Matassar, that these players suddenly look like actually really, really good players, as opposed to just like young players that we like. Um, what's your, I'll go big, I'll go big at the top because I kind of look at the squad, the place that's in right now. And I think there's a, there's a hell of a lot of promise there. Like I'm, I'm actually quite excited by the future of many of these players. You know, I mean, I've spoken at length on here about Pat Matassar, for example, as a player who I really like. and there was a Anthony friend of the show shared a shared a compilation with me the other day of Papsar and he's got such talent he obviously like you say he needs to find that consistency he needs to he needs to find a level of maturity I think to his game there was quite a there was quite revealing little moment and I like how more and more little moments from the from the final come to light as the weeks draw on but there was one little moment in the guard of honor when And Papsar was kind of like messing around as Manchester United were walking through and everyone was applauding them.
13The Spurs players were. Papsar was kind of messing around and Sonny gave him a bollocking. Do you know what I mean? It's kind of in that moment where you're like, yeah, just come on. I know he's excited. I know he's a young player, but still, you know, there are moments like that as we're talking about maturity, where somebody's probably showing their lack of maturity. And I know, I know so much is given to us. Don't walk over the bad. Show respect. class clapping hands emojis and stuff but probably in moments like that I think it's probably just the right thing for uh for a gracious victor to at least kind of clap his you know his his defeated foe but that's sort of that's that's that's tangential I mean like my sort of the main point I want to make is that like to me I think Frank has the tools at his disposal to really make Tottenham a really formidable outfit.
03I do think we can, you know, and I'm not saying that's definitely going to happen, but I think the potential is there for Spurs to be a truly brilliant side. Now, hopefully we can have a similar kind of trajectory as we had under Maurizio Pochettino. And by that, I mean a core of very talented young players and some of them might not make it all the way as you've seen at Arsenal down the road as well. They've had a sort of similar thing where they start off with this core of young, talented players, and then a few of those sink and some swing kind of thing. And then we'll add a few more players.
38We'll add a few more talented players down the seasons. And what I think we will arrive at is that point again, where if we want to be a serious outfit and by serious, I mean, I genuinely mean actually winning the premier league or actually winning the champions league, which is pretty much the only stones left unturned for Tottenham Hotspur. Now, if we want to do that, if we want to take the step to be that type of team, that is, we all know, we all know the, we all know what this means. It means that the board have to, they have to spend big money on whoever the top talent is in whatever position we need at that point in time and maybe maybe we'll do that at that point two three years down the line but I am hopeful at least anyway that Thomas Frank and this group of players right now can go on a journey where we become very good where we become very competitive again and to to give Vange Postacoglu is flowers, as it were.
42I think the fact that we did win the Europa League before he left, regardless of the league form, which I've dug him out about a lot, I do think the gift he gave us of winning a Europa League at the very end will have massively projected us upwards. I think the confidence and the self-belief that that will have given this group of young players It's basically what we didn't get. You know, when that Pochettino, that young team, lost that League Cup final against Chelsea, this is the inverse of that. This is us winning it. And hopefully that can take us on another level. But, you know, I don't really think I've answered kind of the micro-macro question.
28On a micro level, let's get us back in the top eight, at least. On a macro level, let's get us a team that... Let's have him get us to a place where, like I say, we are a couple of 70 plus million pound signing short of maybe winning the Premier League. That's, that's, that to me is a measure of success. I think.
52Let's, here's one to you, I'll let you get a word in edgeways now, Phil. William Gardner, good lad friend of the show at William Gardner says, imagine you've had seven pints over a long Saturday evening. it's taxi time but wait your head is asking for something a kebab my question is what is your kebab of choice salad and sauce options detailed and do you eat it there or do you go home with it um i don't eat it there because i don't want to get involved in any trouble you know me in terms of kebab of choice i'm really partial to a shawarma but i would say i would say hit and miss but rarely do they hit i'm just going to say it now chicken shawarma's in the uk are in a shambles right something needs to change um i i used to be known for a chips and meat which is real sort of disgraceful behavior um back in the day um which is one of those things which started out as a joke you know you hear people ordering it you're like well state of that and then you order it for a laugh and then you're like actually this is pretty bang on um but um i don't really like sheesh if i'm going for a kebab because i feel like that's just uh usually usually poor if you're gonna go it go for it mate donna innit garlic and chili sauce as well not not playing around is that is Is it, I know what you're saying about like the shawarma in the UK because, and I think, I mean, I'm sure people will shout at me here, but like gyros and shawarma to me are very similar, right?
39It's a load of chicken thighs up on a spit and they're kind of shaved, right? So you're getting those little shaved bits of crispy meat. And I agree because I generally don't touch that in the UK. But when I'm in like Greece, Cyprus or whatever, all day long, all day long I will eat because it stays kind of succulent and nice and yeah and you need that caramelization don't you I mean so often you open up your your chicken shawarma and it's just that like pale no mate that that milk toast insipid kind of it's not even gone on that side of the grill for a while don't don't need that I mean to be honest the last time I had a shawarma I couldn't go too far from a toilet for about two weeks.
21And that was only a few months ago. So yeah, it's a painful subject for me. I probably haven't had a donog kebab in, honestly speaking, two decades. I haven't had a donog. And I don't particularly dislike them, but I love a chicken sheesh. i love a chicken cheese i do i love a chicken cheese um healthy i see i don't know it's probably probably i guess it probably is but is it still healthy after you've had it slathered in like garlic and chili and stuff um seven pints yeah well yeah exactly but no i like that i like it with lettuce and not not an awful lot of kebab houses do this but you know it's a mark of a very very good kebab house when they've got the like red cabbage as well so i love a bit of lettuce red cabbage squeeze a lemon on it um and squeeze a lemon yeah have you never you know had that mate yeah yeah just is it are you shaming my kebab i'm not squeezing squeezing lemons after seven pints mate is it a bit too artisan a bit yeah i just feel like if we went for a kebab and we have done I just feel like I would be always trying to shame everyone else in here doing this I'll have it on a plate and I'll eat it in here Can I have a little knife and fork please while you're shoveling rashes of donor meat into your face with your hands all sourced around your mouth and everything You're just going to sit at the bus stop aren't you?
02I'm going to sit at a table Do I I think it's Do I take it home first or not? I would say I play that one by ear I would say because sometimes you know when you're properly properly either hungry or as he's stating they're like the seven pints zone you're kind of spinning and you've got like stomach acid and all that and you're like I just need I just need something in me um all matron but uh yeah yeah I mean I've got yeah I mean bringing it home feels like a bit that you're tainting your house, right? Bringing it over the threshold. It's like inviting a vampire in. But yeah, I'm not going to eat it.
45I won't eat it there at the counter where they're like staring at me. I'll eat it within like, you know, 20 yards of the place. When we were in Crystal Palace, where did we eat those? I can't remember. I remember getting them. That was the last time I remember you and I getting one, which I think was a shawarma. Did we just eat outside? Was that when we went to that like ropey pub by the train station? Yeah. Yeah. I think we just ate them on a wall or something, didn't we? Yeah, that sounds about right. That's a happy medium. Yeah, on a wall. Then what are we doing now? Sitting on a wall squeezing a lemon all over the place in the dark.
22What's this geezer doing? I hope that's answered your question, William. Chili and garlic as well. And especially, you know, I don't mind the Costco big squeezy bottles of chili, but I really do. Again, I like a kebab house. that has like a little like homemade, almost like that watery chili sauce that they get out on a little ladle, but it's always a lot more spicy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I like that. I like that a lot.

50We've got a good question here on Blue Sky from Seamus at bobbleleagepro.bluesky.social. Do people get too attached to players that Spurs get linked to? Various Spurs podcasts, I feel that's a bit of side eye here, have been talking about Eze for over a year now. Is this just another way to set ourselves up for disappointment? What do you think? Do people get too attached to players? Yeah, maybe. Because until, you know, I mean, you spend a lot long enough kind of like, you know, paying attention to ITKs and all that sort of stuff and combing forums and Twitter for news. there's only so so long you can do that without realizing that there's actually no point to it because until they're holding the shirt you know the old edges it's it's all kind of pie in the sky so so yeah maybe I mean you know that as a point I don't know if that kind of um it seems like we were caught in him for a long time so you know I think that's a bit different there's a disappointment that you haven't got a good player but it's also like it doesn't breed confidence that the club know what they're doing if they're caught in a player for so long and they end up going to Arsenal, right?
03That's a bit embarrassing. So I think that there's an element of that in it. So yeah, I mean, being too attached to players, I can't remember the last time that we felt let down that we didn't sign someone, to my mind. Well, was that young, what was he called? I can't remember his name now. The young striker playing in like Norway, who we were really, really heavily linked to, and then it didn't happen. And then he ended up going to like, Ghent or somebody like that yeah yeah yeah yeah what was that lad's name the fact we can't even remember his name is yeah telling isn't it because everyone's like can't believe we missed out on him fuck's sake yeah he's going to be generational do you know what I mean he was tat wasn't he yeah I mean I think you've got I think you got a really bad injury maybe as well yeah um but yeah no I I do I do kind of I do kind of see the point because I think it's it's less about the player isn't it and it's more just being attracted to something new that's it isn't it it's like the new thing that people really want.
02That's what they're losing their minds over. But who knows? Who knows? Mickey Giff asks, was our 2016 team the greatest team to win nothing? I would say just off the bat, to my mind, absolutely. I can't think of a team that was as good as that Pochettino-era team to have literally won nothing. Can you? Yeah, to win nothing, definitely. You know, there's other teams that have been kind of good and never managed to win the Champions League or their respective leagues. But yeah, how many points did we get in that season? I mean, you often say it was 86 points. 86 points, yeah. Yeah, I mean, that's proof, right?
49The fact that we won nothing, we didn't even squeak by a, we didn't even have a season where we were in all three cup competitions or in two cup competitions and running down the league towards the end. We only ended up with a league cup as a consolation prize. We didn't even have that. So yeah, I think that's what sets that team apart from others that you could point that at. We only lost, as well, 2016-17, we lost less games than Chelsea who won it. We lost the least amount of games in the Premier League. It's just the draws that killed us, man. Eight draws. Eight draws. So annoying. So, so annoying that season.
32I really thought we were going to do it as well, man. You know, whatever. Can't keep going on about it. Here's a good one. At Newman THFC asks, do you think Deky is being overlooked by the Spurs fan base? it seems like he's being forgotten in a lot of the squad audits dash how will frank use the squad discussions i i kind of feel that actually person i see what you're saying um yeah i mean i think he's certainly been overlooked in talk about who takes over the captain's armband if sunny goes so i think he's got all the all the attributes to be a good captain. That's a shout. So there's that. I mean, I suppose the question over him is that he, you know, there's that question over whether he's an attacking midfielder or if he's a winger, you know, that might be going against him in that regard.
29But yeah, and he didn't have a very good sort of season last season for various reasons, who did. But yeah, I think definitely he's got, he can be a player that if we unlocked properly. And again, he's separate from players like Saar and Burville, you know, much younger, obviously, but he has that maturity, doesn't he? He has that kind of win-win mentality when he speaks. He always has something sort of very sort of profound and encouraging to say and, you know, speaks really plainly. That's why I think he stands out as a captain potential. Got a really good question here from Peter Drury, but I don't think we'll do it today.
08I think it'll be one for, you could literally, this could be some summer content this is so he's asked he said premier league era name spurs is name the greatest spurs player for every squad number but i reckon that's i think that can be a good long form discussion a good pod on its own so maybe i'll do that as a separate pod piece because i think that's actually really good i really quite fancy the idea of sinking my teeth into that um neumann also asked let's do this let's do this actually um he said a culture question any good tv shows you've watched recently i'm sorry i'm sorry to be like i'm sorry to be you know your uncle that was recommending stuff to you i've just finished season three of squad game squid squad game you are the uncle yeah squid game and it's just one of the goats it is i'm sorry it's it's it's unbelievable i think there's a lot of like people kind of going a bit too deep on oh why did this happen like this and why did that happen like i understand the first series set the bar incredibly incredibly high but i think they've managed to continue season two and three I mean it's kind of it's basically a second season wasn't it split into two parts yeah yeah yeah but really very well I think I just think it's brilliant um have you finished it yet uh yeah finished it yesterday actually um yeah I agree it's just it is a sort of a cultural phenomenon isn't it and I think it's one of those things that because it becomes ubiquitous with like Netflix or TV or everyone's watching it and and that that you can then sort of have people sort of turn against it because some view it is a bit like hack you know the concept but if you take in i think you know as you say this splitting the last two seasons into two um i don't think really necessarily did it any favors thematically because and you know that when was the first season it was years ago i think a lot of the nuance was missed because of how kind of drawn out it has been in that regard um and i think the stress of it i think it is such a unique show in that regard you know the stress of end of what was it the the second season let's call it when they were going when they had to go in the doors you know that that that game when they had to like fit was it four people in the room at once that was just so so stressful and i don't think any other tv show gives you that um that that sort of thing um yeah so all good um what else have i've been watching um do you know what i'll give a little shout out to disney plus's iron heart which is one of these marvel shows which um you know a few years ago the mcu was in this kind of phase of like just churning out stuff and you know i think it definitely damaged the quality and the overall kind of perception of what the mcu is i think this iron heart show that the character appeared in black panther 2 um and then sort of they create this series and it's been on ice for two years which is never a good sign right so you think oh what are they why why are they holding back on this obviously in the context of like the mcu where everything has to kind of feed into each other there you think oh if they're kind of if they can shelve it for two years it's basically unimportant so you this comes out and you know then that kind of like drops expectations down and it's six episodes they released it in two three episode blocks um just really good stuff mate i'm not gonna say it's like amazing and it's like must watch stuff but it's one of these things as well that got like massively review bond on rotten tomatoes even before it had been released which you know everyone knows the reasons behind that um and so for it to just come out and it just be like a good kind of well-written solid show i mean again it's not going to necessarily pick up trees but I really enjoyed it really enjoyed it and um I think it's worth because of the kind of hate stuff like that that gets I definitely think it's worth worth acknowledging um I don't think I've seen anything else actually what else is what else is movies I don't think I've really watched any anything new coming out you've seen that yeah I watched F1 and I've got I've got zero interest in Formula One or motorsport at all and I thought it was great I thought it was really good let me let me cover it when I said great like it's a great cinema experience it's kind of yeah you go you go to the cinema on a Friday night with a big thing of popcorn and a massive drink you can sit down and it's exhilarating it's got a pretty paint by numbers story it's an underdog sort of story you know where it's going you know the beats but it does it really well it's what you'd expect from like a sort of you know brookheimer film it's it's it's really good and again it just it's one of those that it really really makes the case for more live action and less kind of cgi reliant filmmaking at times um and that's not like it that's not like a dig at like marvel stuff because i i understand why that needs to be probably somewhat different just given the nature of it but the the sort of I'd read it a lot and seen a lot around F1 about the kind of the painstaking process they'd they'd the journey they'd been on to create that film and so I felt it I felt it deserving of my participation in the cinema shall we say um and I wasn't disappointed I thought it I thought it was it was really good fun really really enjoyable film um i am really sort of on on the marvel thing because they you know they have sort of announced now that that phase five is done haven't they of marvel um and when you do i saw like a like a post essentially of all the different kind of covers of the phase five stuff and it was it was mostly it was mostly a war crime wasn't it really when you when you kind to look at it a few sort of decent bits here and there but I've got to say I do have to say and I'm not I'm not like a Marvel aficionado or anything like that I'm I'm really looking forward to Fantastic Four I think it looks really I think it looks really good like I'm I actually think it could be really decent don't you yeah yeah absolutely I think that it's um it's one of those things where people talk about sort of like the death of the MCU and it's it's over but I think that as i said i think that's a lot to do with the fact that they they made sort of creative decisions um because they had disney plus so they needed loads of content so they just greenlit everything and then when you scale it back you think well hang on a minute the fantastic four aren't aren't there yet and that's coming out the x-men aren't there yet those are massive properties and massive interests for that sort of thing so so yeah we'll see and i don't think those these things without kind of um turning my nose up at it i don't think they're that difficult to get right either right i know that's easy to say but i think that you can that there's a reason these characters like the fantastic four what they've been around since like 1960 what two or something there's a reason that there's a reason there's longevity there so just don't necessarily stray too far from that i mean i know that the fantastic four movies from the early 2000s were much derided and rightly so but again i think that they just weren't necessarily reflective what the characters were so yeah and again like as you say about f1 there's room for that i don't i don't really get the kind of snobbery about this sort of stuff you know when people say about you know these kind of you know i think martin scorsese said it right about the mcu in particular how it's not it's not cinema it's a roller coaster ride or you know and then everyone kind of as they looks down their nose at it ask cinema owners if they want the mcu to keep going i think unanimously they say yes because otherwise cinemas would be closing mate it's the same sort of point we arrived at like when ben and i were talking about it on byob is that like you can yes you can you can scoff you can turn your nose up at like somebody like taylor swift for example putting out her tour as a movie right but the fact remains is that it's stuff like that that is keeping cinemas alive like it really is and not everything has to be for you this is the thing right not not everything has to be for everybody right like people are allowed to enjoy different things and i and this is the thing like you you you know i'm not like the biggest marvel fan but i'm definitely not somebody that gets so sniffy about it because some of my favorite movies like growing up as a kid i loved it i loved the old burton batman films i love love the sam rammy Spider-Man movies.
55I think I still think like the first two, maybe even the third Spider-Man, definitely the first two, I still probably think of the best comic book movies ever made, personally speaking. I think they're unbelievable. I know people might be getting a bit annoyed if they're tuning in for a Tottenham podcast, but there is one other thing I wanted to ask you about films, mate, while we're on this. I've seen quite a bit of people now, like people are essentially saying the Batman, is like a far superior film than any of Nolan's Batman films. And I sort of said to you, I said to you after we'd watched the Batman, that it felt to me, it felt to me more like a Batman film.
40It felt to me like it was more rooted in the kind of the, the, the mythology and everything like that of Batman. Even if Nolan's films were maybe better as films, if you get what I mean. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, it's quite an interesting debate that it's obviously getting turned into one of these things are dusty millennials or like the Nolan films kind of thing. But I don't even think it's about that. I think it's about a taste, your taste in what you like from like superhero movies in a way. Yeah, I think just on that, I think that that the Batman coming out and the way it was where it was focused more on like, you know, detective rather than him swinging about and beating people up necessarily.
23that doesn't happen without Nolan's more action-based kind of movies, right? So it's a bit weird to kind of say, see, this is how it should be. There's like, if that Batman came out on its own without the proceeding kind of, you know, Nolan verse, as it were, I don't think people are having it, mate. So again, it's context, right? Yeah, it is. Let's go back to Spurs. I did have one. Where was this? It was quite a funny question. it's like it's a mum question but it's not like anything to do with sex or anything like that Nick at IamNickCollings asks would you let the full Spurs squad each blast a ball at your mum if it meant we won the league next season no how far away would she have to be What should we say?
21Should we say penalty spot? Or is that too close even? Edge of the box. Let's say edge of the box. She's standing in the goal and they get to belt one from, from, yeah, edge of the box.
39I don't think so, mate. I don't think so. Not to be all like, you know, protective or anything, but I just feel like imagine standing there after the first one you'd be like what have i done you know i do think yeah it's like pedro poro steps up and like drills on right and you know yeah and all high-fiving each other about how good they got out and then afterwards they'd be all like like faux respectful wouldn't they but like yeah because the thing is as well can you imagine as well if it was one of those balls that like you know when you sometimes see those slow-mo shots of a ball hitting someone in the face in the crowd yeah you see their head like locked back proper whiplash style seeing that happen to your own mum would be i mean is this is it what like would you feel bad even because there's a part of me saying like what if i just if i asked my mum's permission first is that like is that or is that just bad in itself is it bad that i'd even consider it enough to say mum could you do as a solid um is that bad in itself maybe it is it's probably not great is it she gives all those things where she'd be like sure and say she'd do it but if it's important to you i'd do it yeah no come on um yeah because again it's it's one of those things isn't it it's one of those things where you can sort of sit here and be like, yeah, I'd do that.
05But the reality of it, the reality, like you say, of watching, because like you say, they'd be having a right laugh about it. They'd be loving it. Secretly, there'd be that little demon in the back of their head to be like, I want to smack it against her so hard. Yeah, they're so competitive, aren't they? So one does it. And then imagine the rest of the season, And then you watching them, you'd be furious. I don't think so. I just don't think it would work on any level. But winning the league, winning... Yeah, but they wouldn't have won it, would they? It's the genius powers or whoever, right?
45Whoever's kind of done it. So you just... I just don't... All right, maybe I'm overthinking it, but you put yourself in that situation. I just think you'd be like, well, that wasn't worth it because it was an empty victory. well that's it's like it's like when you completed doom with iddqd on right it just never it went the same was it oh right there's a there's a cyber demon and i'm killing him with the pistol but you're not are you like he can't hurt you so what's the point idkfa yeah get the what was the other one id piss pods wasn't it the one where you could walk through walls remember that yeah oh dear um top of motsbury this is uh this is what this is what a summer break sounds like everybody yeah yes it's that meme isn't it of like the guy standing with a stick like do something that's why we're talking about kebabs mcu doom as per usual to be honest but yeah it's fine isn't it we just won a trophy mate
51banger that absolute banger um right yeah let's hope spurs sign somebody soon but if not come on new spurs i guess cheers phil thank you
