Key Takeaways
- Cultural Connection: Players like Xavi Simons engaging with fan culture can positively influence their reception among supporters.
- Leadership Challenges: Romero's outspokenness raises questions about leadership and player-manager relationships, with some arguing that he should keep frustrations private.
- Club Direction: The lack of clear communication and direction from the club's leadership, particularly during Johan Lange's press conference, contributes to an atmosphere of uncertainty and frustration among fans and players alike.
- Protest Strategies: The effectiveness of protest actions, such as walkouts, can be variable and require thoughtful execution to achieve their intended impact.

Like those frozen cavemen they find. Which makes you wonder, what would a caveman think of Jägermeister? Well, if you served it warm, he'd probably throw it in your face, say, Oonga Boonga, and storm off. And nobody wants that. So drink it cold or not at all. Jägermeister. Damn, that's cold. Drink responsibly. Jägermeister liqueur, 35 % alcohol by volume. Imported by Masked Jägermeister, U.S., White Plains, New York. This is Ayo Akemwellere from the Athletic FC podcast.

1:19Billie T:yes the immediate feeling gives you is nice but of course there's no point in signing players
1:26Jack:have not helped us in the short term, in the middle term, or even in the long term. Hello, everyone. Welcome back to Rule the Roots podcast. Billy T, I mean, look, thank you very much for joining me, mate. I'm surprised you've got time for the little people now that you're rubbing shoulders with Xavi Siemens and the like. What happened there? Tell everybody the story. Oh, mate, well, you know when he was sort of posing in some old retro Tottenham shirts in December,
1:55Xavi Simons:and I jokingly did this tweet saying, these are five things that Chad used to do next if he was going to be a proper Tottenham. And one of them was like, do the walk from Seven Sisters down the high road, go to Banana Bar. And one of them I put was, just listen to Chas and Dave. And then he's posted on his Instagram, it's like a little reel, where he's Googling who are Chas and Dave, which I love.
2:19Jack:I do love it. Can I say now, I love him. I really do.
2:25Xavi Simons:Oh, mate, what a player. What a player. And do you know what? I'm such a, you know, I think we all are deep down, so easily pleased that just a Tottenham, someone, you know, from another country, coming from a big league, trying to, you know, assimilate into the culture just by, like, he was wearing a retro Spurs shirt, you know, trying to Google who Chas and Dave, all that stuff plays to me like a, I am, that gets me so much, like, I'm in, I'm all in. Anyone who's trying to actually do stuff like that, just so easy to win the fans over, isn't it like that?
2:53Jack:Well, that's it. I mean, people will say it's cynical and it's this and that, but it's like he doesn't have to do that stuff. Harry Kane didn't even do that stuff, and he was our greatest ever player.
3:04Xavi Simons:Kola Mawani is not searching for Chaz and Dave songs on Spotify, is he?
3:07Jack:He definitely isn't. I do love the idea, though, of like a 20-something Dutch lad Googling Chaz and Dave coming across like Margate and Gertrude.
3:18Xavi Simons:On the face of it, it could be like a rap duo, couldn't it? like chas and dave you know like pete and baz you know the drill yeah yeah those two old boys right yeah yeah when you're googling if you have no knowledge at all of chas and dave and you listen i can't imagine what a 22 year old uh you know dutch guy thinks of chas and dave but that is proper this is tottenham as you can get right i've got to say though like they've got this there's
3:44Jack:there's a few like proper tongue twisters and stuff and like there's there's a real like mastery to a lot of chas and dave's old tunes do you know i mean i know like i know they're sort of like a bit of a meme in the spurs fan base but they're actually incredible like they're really pretty what am i i've got to say what what i was gutting things is i went to best of all in like 2010 i think it was 2010 2011 and chas and dave were playing and i was intoxicated shall we say when i was there and i sort of thought i was like oh yeah chas and dave were playing on this stage so we went over to watch the night i didn't really know any of their tunes at the time other than the spurs ones and i sort of i hung around at the back for a bit and sort of nodded my head to say i'd seen chas and dave but now now like i really really like a lot of their tunes and i was like i'm so gutted that i was actually there i could have watched them and appreciated them but i just
4:37Xavi Simons:didn't uh you know gives me a little chance to drop my all-time favorite music fact as well which is uh and speaking of you know relevance to someone like javi simmons so obviously in the Eminem song my name is that samples um a song that's used in better course all um I can't remember the name of the original sample but you know the guitar it's like I got that by yeah well that is either Chaz or Dave playing guitar on that song um I can't remember which which one but that guitar that you can hear is Chaz or Dave and that means Eminem sampled Chaz or Dave and Chavi Simmons would have heard Chaz or Dave via Eminem it's it's absolute equality
5:11Jack:isn't it because i think there's i think there's an interview i'm pretty sure i'm pretty sure it's dave um and i'm pretty sure there was a there was an interview of him once when he was saying like you know my boy told me dad you're in this uh your your tune's getting used by this like american rapper who's massive and he was like i don't know like as long as i get some royalties from it i
5:31Xavi Simons:don't really care but there you go chavi would have definitely heard that before so yeah man it's a banger as well actually to be fair but just going back to him like he was just i think you know it's like i always you know i was talking about this of some uh fans of other clubs at the moment something like verts for example like the the intention of every other fan base to sort of knock someone that signs like that and then obviously you've got like the 007 thing which people use nowadays um travis scored got an assist on a debut so that didn't happen but you know people he's always on that hate essential for example but now i saw like arsehole fans tweeting after that Man City game being like, wow, he's actually really good to be fair.
6:06Xavi Simons:I think the whole Bundesliga thing, you know, him and Verts are both sort of peaking at the same time. But I think everyone is waking up to the fact that obviously this guy is just really, really good.
6:15Jack:The other thing is as well, right? You know, like Hayter Central and all that sort of thing. It's only actually players who are good that they put in the crosshairs. Do you know what I mean? We're not seeing Mouane on there, you know, which is... Yeah, if you make it to that side,
6:26Xavi Simons:it means you've got to be doing something right before to do that. but I think one of the things like the I mean this is I didn't really intend to talk about
6:36Jack:Xavi Seumanns this much but I think it's it's fun too because he's one of the bright lights in this season at the moment um the thing that I sort of found I find with him as I found with Modric is because they are they appear to be small because they're basically because they're short people sort of ignore the fact that they're both kind of units like like javi seaman doesn't actually i don't think he and i always see people say he gets pushed about i don't i don't see it myself i think he's he's a bit of a shithouse you know he gets stuck in like you say he's he's hard he does but we we need somebody with a bit of that about him right now and yeah i love him i love i'm I'm so happy to see him coming into football because we have seen, and don't get me wrong, I've been critical of him.
7:26Jack:I'm not saying, you know, I've had this vision and he's been great, but we've all seen glimpses of what he's capable of. I think the frustration I felt sometimes is that he's not showing us more of that, but have always accepted he is still adapting. He is still adjusting. And it feels like, I mean, we say it sort of quietly, don't we, but it does feel like he's turning a bit of a corner now, doesn't it?
7:49Xavi Simons:Yeah. and he's just one of those players, the classic and Madison is obviously, he's like the heir to Madison in many ways, positionally and this but he just gets it players, he just gets it but he does just get it, you know just the way he goes over to the crowd when we've won or something like that and obviously his posts on social media, which does make a difference in this day and age he just gets it, he seems to actually be interested in what makes Tottenham Tottenham and for me that's huge for him and let's be real, Xavi Simmons We are so lacklustre of star quality these days. I mean, if you're used to having one of Kane or Son in the team, Xavi Simmonds could conceivably be like our, I know we spoke about this in summer, I think, on this very podcast, but the franchise player in inverted commas, he could definitely be that.
8:35Jack:I feel like we've got a fork in the road now, Bill. This is like one of those pick-your-own-destiny books that everyone used to have when they were a kid. The Langer interview or the Christian Romero social media post? because i think they can both segue into one another yeah where are you feeling the energy
8:51Xavi Simons:first what should we go into first um should we do romero just because as we are behind the curtain as we are recording this thomas frank is literally doing a press conference right now um and i've got some quotes if you if you want me to share them oh please do please do he's just said so he's just said um and it's funny so i was speaking to friend of the show seb and friend of the show adam before this and we were he was we were doing like this predict what frank's going the same thing and i said he would say exactly this i knew this was coming um he says i can confirm that we have dealt with everything internally which i think you know if anyone that watches standardized he says i think if you want to know what he meant you have to ask him that's the right way to answer that question he's very passionate person leaves everything on the pitch he wants to win every time it's something we have dealt with and deal with internally there is a way of doing things he has been very good at doing things i would this is my message the beauty of written text is you can read it into it and the only person who knows what it meant was Kuti I think it shows that Kuti is extremely passionate so no surprises really they've not really nothing much from it which I guess we kind of expected from Frank right yeah I mean it's one of those things I think what can they do like what can they actually do to him
10:00Jack:we are short of players he is the club captain like we we desperately need him really it's not that he is the club captain he is one of our best players by a considerable distance he's one of the few players that's actually really going that extra mile on the pitch or at least has been to this point he's bailed us out of trouble several times this season already um you know if he's going to have a bit of a rant about things i would imagine probably the club have decided i can imagine they thought internally this isn't right we can't really have this but on a non-emotional level if they sort of shelve their own egos they probably think everybody knows christian's a hot-headed character everybody knows he fires off like this we need him right now we can deal with this properly in the summer um but i mean like what what do you i mean what do you personally feel about him just to sort of to let's say put another angle on this i was on last word and spurs last night um and adam osper on there was essentially making the case that as much as he didn't disagree with anything that christian romero was saying for the club captain to be saying that is not good is unacceptable doesn't set a good example to his teammates doesn't set a good example to the younger players in the squad so on and so forth um i i i didn't sort disagree with that i don't disagree with that fundamentally but i guess my lack of caring about that right now supersedes that how how do you feel about the whole thing yeah that's exactly how i
11:42Xavi Simons:feel as well i think you know the most important thing about all this is the things that he's saying is true like that that's the biggest thing i don't really care if it's coming from the captain or whoever you know this stuff needs to be called out because if you watch you know or if you listen to, you know, no one at the club, Thomas Frank's not going to be in a press conference and call it out, you know, saying that January was not acceptable, as some other managers might. I'm not saying that, you know, a manager should do that, but some might. And Thomas Frank would obviously not do that because that's not his personality.
12:11Xavi Simons:You know, I think we have to do all we can to anyone that is involved in the club to call out this, what has been an absolute, you know, another disgrace or transfer window that's obviously left Thomas Frank ultimately short probably in the long run. And I think, yeah, the other thing about that is I think if you take you know what happened after that he posted it and all the players you know coming out and liking the posts and stuff I don't think he was speaking on behalf of himself I think he's obviously this is a conversation that has come from the players as well so and I think that probably is the job of the captain sometimes you know to speak on behalf of your teammates it wasn't like it was an unpopular decision from the rest of the players because they all backed him afterwards so you know I understand that it's not ideal for your captain to be making public comments but it's not ideal for your you know your director of football and your owners to leave you know your manager with 12 outfield players after january either and that has got to always
12:59Jack:remain the biggest issue don't you feel that because i also feel like the guy literally only signed a contract this summer right he he signed a new long-term contract he knows how tottenham operate right as much as say certain promises may have been made to him i can't imagine this will come as a huge surprise to him perhaps and i don't know how many people have considered this other than me obviously because i am a genius perhaps he is just simply using his power as one of the most important members of the squad right now to say if you don't change your ways i'm out it puts pressure on them to actually make sure oh, this is a big summer to keep players like him happy, to keep players like him engaged.
13:47It's a reminder to them that if they don't buck their ideas up,
13:52Jack:he will go because he will have looked at Harry Kane and Son for the past few years and thought, I ain't having that happen to me. You know?
14:00Xavi Simons:Yeah, I think so, exactly. And, you know, whatever you label it, Chris Romero, and I know there seems to be a sort of, you know, the majority of fans back him as a player and stuff, but he does draw a bit of stick as well. Sometimes people label that he's not defensively good enough or he has lapses in concentration or he's playing for himself and stuff like that. But this guy is a winner. He is such, obviously in everything that he does, a winner. He's won massively on international level. Every single Argentinian player that you see in an interview comes out and says that Cristian Romero is the best player that they play with.
14:36He's so...
14:37Jack:Didn't Leo Messi literally say he's the best defender he's ever played with?
14:40Xavi Simons:And Martinez said he's the best defender in the world as well, specifically over Gabriel and stuff. He obviously transmits this winning energy, and I think he's frustrated by the fact that the club don't do the same thing because obviously we've seen loads and loads of times since he signed, under Nuno, weirdly, by the way, the club have not done everything they can to try and win. And at the end of the day, he's fundamentally a winner. So this guy's won World Cups. He's won two massive international trophies. He captained and won player of the year, a Europa League final, won the best player at the competition.
15:12Xavi Simons:It was unbelievable on that day as well. This guy is a born winner, and I can imagine his frustrations are more of the fact that Tottenham don't always seem to be put winning first, and that's a problem that many of the fans have.
15:24Jack:I will say, anybody that's listened to this for any length of time will know, I've moaned about Christian Romero a lot in the past. I've been frustrated with him, perhaps prioritising Argentina over Tottenham, the lengthy injury layouts, the rashness in his play at times, even though I do feel that is somewhat overstated. But I will say this past season, I've completely fallen in love with the bloke. Like I think he has been, I just think when the chips have been down, which they have been down this season, he has been one of the few that has stood up and has, you know, been prepared to be counted or however, I don't know how the expression goes, but whatever it is, he stood up, he's put his head above the parapet and he's fought for the shirt.
16:09Jack:He's fought for the fans. And I can't fault that. We always sit here and we always say players aren't loyal anymore. Players don't care about fan bases. Players don't care about clubs. This guy does. He does care. And I think he's demonstrated that plenty of times this season. I'm saying all that, Billy, because I am going to shift to a more uncomfortable part of the conversation, which is whether we agree with him or not, all this type of stuff, are we arriving at a point where there is potentially just too much noise around Christian Romero? So either it's from the Instagram posts or it's the reputation that he has where he basically picks up yellow cards because Gary Neville likes to highlight his behavior on television all the time.
17:03Jack:And I think that does have an impact on referees and their decision making. basically is are we at a point where there's just there's there's too much noise around christian romero that maybe if somebody does want to buy him we should say farewell take the money and try and get somebody else in i'm not saying that's what i feel i'm just kind of floating the question that i am seeing out there in the ether i think there's there's two different
17:30Xavi Simons:responses to that one the one that you just mentioned there's how we feel as fans and how the club will feel so i think as a fan of the club like no one wants to lose christian romero because um yeah i know some people say well we play better we've done so i don't know but christian romero is such a high quality defender i think he's one of those players if he left you'd immediately see the kind of impact it would have also on the dressing room as well like it's just bad optics isn't it to lose your best your captain one of your best players a player that is obviously massively popular with the fam uh with the other players and stuff and you know their captain a winner someone like that leaving tottenham is bad optics uh in terms of you know other players even joining as well um so i don't think the fans would agree with that but what i do think is that i think the club will see that and i think they'll try to entertain bids for him this summer i think there's just two you know the last thing they want to be doing is having the captain come out all the time and call this is not the first time he's done it it's like the fourth or fifth time isn't it he's done it um you know the last thing they're going to be doing at the moment when they're trying to steady the ship and doing a terrible job at it.
18:29Xavi Simons:Let's just add that in as well. You know, in the six months under this new sort of regime, I can't imagine the amount of disharmony and people that are, you know, the director of football's gone, the captain's about to go, the manager could go any minute. It's been a massively tumultuous start. I think the last thing they'll need is the captain coming out all the time and challenging them. I think he's obviously unhappy behind the scenes. And I think what you have to look at as well is this, the journalist that posted that Romero is going in summer is Gaston Edel. Augustin Edel is essentially Romero's mouthpiece.
18:59Xavi Simons:He's the one that does all...

19:01Jack:They're like best mates, aren't they, to a degree, aren't they? At least in a professional sense.
19:05Xavi Simons:Yeah, he's the one that posted that Romero would rather use the Argentinian doctors than Tottenham. He's the one that posted about Romero's injury and contract. This is essentially coming straight from Romero himself. So I think the club will just be like... We can't keep being called out publicly. It's just making a mess of every single thing, optics-wise. We'll take a bid from Atletico or Real Madrid or whoever it is. and Christy Romero is probably behind the scenes saying, I need to go this time, I want to go, and I'm going to keep doing this until you let me go. I think he's possibly trying to make it untenable, which I think some people will criticise and say, well, you should put the good of the club first.
19:37But at the same time, I think you could infer
19:41Xavi Simons:that he's been broken promises from his reaction to things, both now and before the training transfer window. He keeps talking about lies and stuff all the time, saying it's a disgrace. And anyone that doesn't think that that post was about the transfer window, So the fact that he posted it literally as the central window closed, I think, you know, you've got to read between the lines. There's definitely a self-awareness to all of this. I think probably the bigger problem, not bigger problem, but one of the big problems that we are going to face when it comes to selling Christian Romero is that Spanish clubs quite simply just don't have that much money anymore. Are they going to have the sort of money that Spurs will want for... How old is Christian Romero now? 26, 27? Maybe a bit older than he is.
22:04Xavi Simons:And he's got a massive new deal as well.
22:05Jack:Exactly. Let's say he's 28 with a massive new deal. He's a valuable player. Like Spurs... Are they going to want to lose Christian Romero for less than less than 60 million pounds so what's that 70 million euros probably not um now Real Madrid we know have got that type of money but are they that interested in him I feel that Real Madrid might be more interested in Mickey van der Ven yeah and that's another domino in all this right if Mickey van der Ven sees Christian Romero going I can't imagine he's going to be particularly happy with that either um it'd be interesting
22:43Xavi Simons:to see it because they did say in the Gustav Ndall tweet it says he has interest from La Liga and other leagues. The only thing I can think of from the other leagues is Saudi. I can't imagine anyone else being able to afford him. It'd be interesting because Saudi would no problem pay 60-70 million for Amero. It'd be interesting to see whether he would do that. I'm not sure because obviously he'll be on absolutely insane money out there. I think that's one to maybe keep an eye on because I think you're right. La Liga of clubs are broke. But at the same time, I think what you were saying before, I think the club will just be at a point now where they'll just be so happy to get rid of all of that.
23:19Xavi Simons:And I think he's going to only get worse as time goes on in terms of picking up a fuss and stuff because we know what he's like. He's very passionate. I think by the time there, they'll just be happy to sort of accept a bid probably lower than, you know, Daniel Levy. If Daniel Levy was here, I can't see Romero going for anything less than£90 million or£100 million. But under the new regime, they might just be happy to say, right, let's just stop all this noise and get rid of him. As you said before, I think that's a key consideration, but the Liga clubs are just broke, aren't they? So it'd be interesting to see what happens.
23:49Jack:Yeah. And I wonder if, you know, if these, you know, the new people in charge might be more pragmatic, like you say, they won't be as, say, stubborn in trying to get a deal done at X amount of value as Levy did. They might weigh it up and say, okay, right, we let Christian Mimera go to Atletico Madrid, but what we are doing there is keeping up goodwill between us and that club. We've taken Conor Gallagher from them. they take Christian Romero from us and then who knows in future if there's another Aguero or something come along maybe we beat the city to the chase on that one I don't know do you know
24:22Xavi Simons:what I mean but and obviously we saw it with Johnson as well didn't we like Daniel Levy is never accepting a 35 million pound bid for Johnson for example like absolutely there's no chance he would be trying to get more than that 50 million pounds that we paid for him so yeah it'd be
24:35Jack:interesting to see what happens let's uh let's do langer mate um what are your overall i mean i won't be saying anything that nobody else has already said it was it was uninspiring i don't really know what we were expecting from it um i mean what your main sort of takeaways from from his piece to camera.
25:02Xavi Simons:Yeah, I mean, I think my main takeaways are the fact that there was nothing really surprising. I think you could have predicted every single thing that he said. You know, in terms of the excuses, I think some of them were a bit weak, saying that, you know, well, no one else is signing any players. But I'd also suggest that no one else has 12 first-team injuries at the moment either, so that doesn't really wash. And then, you know, we've seen this kind of stuff coming out all the time lately with Thomas Frank talking about the Semenya bid and then I see there's a bit um a news article today saying well actually Tottenham put in the highest salary for Semenya it's just all of it and this is why I don't blame Lange personally all of it seems to be sort of puff pieces for the owners because I noticed what what was true in that interview is that he mentioned the owners twice and he said you know there's no doubting their ambitions obviously he's been told to say that you know and I think everything that we do at the moment just seems to be them trying to convince people that they're ambitious and trying to convince people that they're going to do this this and this but without actually doing it and you know tottenham i think we've always been the same the same things about all of these things actions are the things which speak louder than words we're very good at making words and vinaya is very good at doing statements in programs and things saying well this is what we're going to do but where is the evidence for it there's no the evidence doesn't follow so and i think langer in particular you know i know he doesn't particularly strike me as an impressive guy or anything like that but at the end of the day before this january transfer window.
26:22Xavi Simons:He was tasked with signing youth players and Paratachi was supposed to be the director of football. Obviously it's been such a mess and chaos that now Lange has been the one who has to go in front all of it for everyone. So I think again it's the same with Romero and the same with Lange. You have to look at the structures above which are the reasons why these guys are ultimately failing at everything they do because I think the buck stops with the owners and we were promised that this was going to be different. We haven't seen any of it.
26:51Jack:That's pretty much bang on, mate.
26:55Jack:It's hard to have any sort of trust for this regime going forwards, isn't it? I mean, that's the main thing.
27:04Xavi Simons:That's crazy to think that's after six months, right? How bad it's been in their first six months. I don't think anyone would have, even the most cynical people would have predicted. But they've lost their director of football. The captain's coming out, making statements against them. And the manager could go game to game. The players are fighting the foul. It's just been absolute chaos since they turned up here. And Lang is just the next fall guy, I guess.
27:30Jack:I think the thing is, if I were to be at all sympathetic to them, I would say I can imagine an institution of this size when there's a shake-up at the top. Daniel Levy has gone. they are having to work out who does what again they're having to sort of reshuffle everything work out a strategy blah blah blah that probably does take a bit of time that probably does take more time than us the average bloke on the street can comprehend I get that to a degree however at the same time at the same time when you look at the state of the squad right now be it ravaged by injury or just not really fit for purpose you look at the place that the team is in the league right now you look at the type of conversations we could be having in a couple of months time if results don't go our way and we're finding ourselves in a more precarious position a much more precarious position the lack of urgency to really bring anybody in outside of Semenyo and yeah sure Semenyo was a player of a you know certain stature who was available it meant that the deal was more straightforward it meant it was easier it meant that there was a almost guarantee that he was going to come in and improve the squad immediately I do understand that there's a hesitancy to say be rushed into something in general all those reasons all those different reasons that people say but I think that the sheer baseline of this whole thing is we needed a lift the club needed a lift the squad needed a lift I think probably Thomas Frank needed a lift and many people don't care about that but still even even
29:21Xavi Simons:came out on the Friday didn't he and said you know the squad is now weaker than it was at the beginning of January he came out on the Friday before the deadline that's mad really you know and I just I
29:29Jack:think it's really really strange that you know they managed to get Brennan Johnson out the door which which is whatever we think about him and i i don't think that was the worst piece of business were it not for the fact we haven't replaced the goals that are missing were it not for the fact we haven't replaced a player who okay wasn't the best but was still effective at what he did and was more often than not available he doesn't have a very big injury list or anything like that to his name Brennan Johnson so we've got one less body one less experienced body at that more goals which have been extracted from the team um it's I just I think it's it's hard to make excuses really for the people running the show that aren't capable of seeing that that have perhaps this level of hubris that Spurs aren't going to get caught in an uncomfortable sort of
30:29Xavi Simons:situation in a few weeks time right yeah and I think the real alarm bells for me was at the end of the interview um he said well you know already we're gonna we're looking towards summer and drawing up a list of players they said that at the end of summer as well and obviously that it's not transpired like we were in a very high profile transfer saga for Savinho and then Semenya and none of them got over the line like and I think you know people were saying well at least we you know we're trying with Semenya or Thomas Frank said that as well if your list only comprises of Semenyo and no other players and you're not doing your job as a recruitment guy like Semenyo particularly this not in summer but particularly now was never realistic considering the other teams that were in for him and he's you know probably the best player in the Premier League at the moment or certainly one of them and in form you know it was never a realistic opportunity so if you bid 70 million for Semenyo and then you offer him a massively lucrative contract has been reported by Mockbell yesterday then where has that money gone for any other targets like if you're you know you can't be going into a transfer window a difficult transfer window as it may be with only one left winger target because in summer you said well yeah we know we didn't get the left winger that we wanted but we were already looking towards january and then you know a year later six months later you're saying well we know we didn't get the left winger wanted but we're looking towards summer it's just the same you know it's repeating the same mistakes isn't it really and we've seen you know in summer not signing a left winger not saying you know particularly has to be savini or whatever has let us down because you know our front three the do not score enough goals and they have they've barely been prolific between them until Solanke's come back so you know we are obviously not signing a prolific left-wing scorer has massively hindered us and it's part of the reason that we're in the mess that we're in and they've had two windows to address it now and not done it in either time do you think there's anything to be said and look you
32:13Jack:know I'm not casting aspersions over like any Danish national characteristics or anything and I say that purely because Mark Nesbitt has brought that up before when I've spoken to him about this type of thing but the fact that we have in langer and in frank two fairly dour characters who aren't really very good at selling a dream i don't think neither of them whatever you know i i had my fair share to say about andropos to coglu but one of the things i think most people were united on with him was his ability to tell a story to sell a dream to get people on board with his words now he is exceptional at that and not everybody is going to be an orator on the level of Ange Postacoglu with doing that type of thing but there are still levels to it right and I find that two of the figureheads of the club as I say in Lange and in Frank are these two quite dour individuals these two individuals who as opposed to selling as a dream want to temper our expectations at basically every single turn and i just wonder like it can't only be the fans that find this type of negging to be quite uninspiring right like surely that bleeds down into the club into the squad like like you know we made a joke before this um bill like can you imagine langer and frank sitting christian romero down and telling him off like about his social media posts i mean it's just not going to be a thing is it
33:51Xavi Simons:yeah and um obviously we were talking about you know before the show about the um before the press conference and that predicting that you know lang or frank will probably say they're dealing with internally and that's exactly what's transpired um but you just can't imagine that these guys what's lang i'm going to say to romero do you know i mean it's just like imagining that kind of conversation and how that goes like i just can't you know i'm not you know you know i know everybody every single person is different and some people have different temperaments and stuff and some people are cool calm and collected and things but i just don't don't get the ambition or i don't you know look at the characteristics that you want to see in a manager or a director don't seem to come through from these guys um and i think you know and that's i think probably why Langer was essentially demoted in the first place.
34:38Xavi Simons:You know, speaking to people like Paul O 'Keefe has said that, you know, he was sort of useless in negotiations and things like that, and he sort of got demoted to being like a youth scout, essentially, which is obviously something which he's decent at. And it's just sort of weird that he's sort of been left as the one to spearhead the director of football now that Fabio's gone. And then I did see that Matt Law said, we're going to try and bring someone else in, but at the moment, you know, he was sort of left with the January transfer window and directing our football club. And clearly, you know, he got demoted at Aston Villa he's essentially been demoted at Tottenham you know this guy is not a competent director of football at the end of the day.
35:13Jack:Do you have any feelings on the Levy stuff on you know the sort of Brooklyn Eric the crypto bro trying to buy out Levy's stake and blah blah blah all that sort of stuff?
35:26Xavi Simons:I think you know what I'm just from reading various different things and various different sources it's quite interesting I think what I would say is I think what you can read into it is that obviously the Lewis family's intention was to buy Daniel Levy's shares. I think, you know, there's no secret about that. And that's kind of what they want so that they have 100 % control of the football club. And I think what we're seeing now is I don't think Daniel Levy was ever going to go down quietly and just say, you know, here's my shares. Take them for a price that I believe is low. And you could have them and let's just be done with all this.
36:00Xavi Simons:I think, you know, knowing what we know about Daniel Levy over the last 25 years, his personality and the way that he does things he was never going to go down without a fight and i think what we're seeing now is potentially that fight and um you know a lot of noise and interest and smoke and mirrors and things like that and i think from what it sounds like from reading between the lines their relationship was really messy lewis family and daniel levy and simon jordan suggested that the lewis family suspect foul play and his past and they're auditing that situation to see if that's true so i think this is the beginning of something quite messy and i think it's probably going to get drawn out but what i think it will ultimately lead to is the lewis family buying daniel levy's um you know his his shares eventually i think that's the end game for all this but i don't think daniel levy was ever going to go down without a fight put it that way i mean in terms of like enix position really like i'm just sort of i mean
36:59Jack:the main thing I hope is at the end of the day, really they sell the club. I think if the, if we want to compete, I think we've arrived at a point now where the cup just needs to be sold. From my perspective, it makes sense really. And I, can I just preface this all by saying I have literally no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to this type of thing. And I don't pretend to, I'm just trying to break this down. Yeah. Yeah. In a layman's way that I sort of feel makes sense. and it makes sense to me that tottenham hotspur is a much more attractive proposition to a buyer if enic own all of it if enic just has the whole thing and can sell it to somebody not somebody saying well you get this percentage of it but another percentage is owned by this weird kind of crypto dude who bought a bought a chunk of it that has no controlling option or anything on it it just seems to be a dead investment from anyone else's perspective which
37:58Xavi Simons:is sort of weird and a consortium of people buying 30 of this club where they ultimately won't have any say in anything just doesn't seem right to me it just doesn't seem like why would anyone
38:07Jack:really essentially want to do that so it seems nefarious that's the thing it seems like weird unless unless they would want to then go on and buy the rest of it for me nick yeah but exactly yeah but i saw that simon jordan thing as well and he seemed to suggest that these people are chances that they don't have the money at all for that type of thing yeah yeah and he seems to
38:29Xavi Simons:suggest that they don't even have or what he what he was saying was that daniel levy had told him that he doesn't think that they have the money to even buy the the 30 for 1 billion so you know the the which would then suggest they've got no chance of buying the whole club for three and a half

40:13Jack:It's all just money. like these sort of amount of these amounts that just get chucked about is just it's insane isn't
40:21Xavi Simons:it really yeah and i don't know if you do you ever watch the show industry i i haven't i'll ask you
40:27Jack:about this actually go on but tell me what you're gonna say yeah i mean that is essentially what the
40:31Xavi Simons:whole show is about it's about sort of like the idea of you know all of our structures that we rely on are essentially just people gambling and stuff against you know things that do and don't exists and it's like the whole finance world is essentially just a massive gambling product project for you know people that are in in charge of it and stuff and it industry is an amazing amazing show i absolutely love it and i was gonna say i've seen it called the like spiritual
40:56Jack:succession yeah successor to succession yeah it's very that and it's very it's a bit like
41:02Xavi Simons:succession mixed with skins i would say it's a bit like but most of the time i don't have a clue what they're talking about when they go into the finance specific stuff and it's just like it's all numbers and shorting and doing this and that and i had that well the big short was like
41:15Jack:such a good film but i didn't understand any of it you know succession is really very much like that but the good thing about it is you can still um you can still get it from just how strong the
41:25Xavi Simons:characters are but most of this stuff is just like all imaginary like numbers on projections and things it's like none of it is actually real it's just that world is just so far beyond anything that I particularly comprehend that it's just it's crazy really but that is essentially what's happening you know we've just got these people in rooms that are sort of valuing and devaluing our club and trying to at the end of the day this is our football club that they're doing this with and it'll be interesting to see how it happens but you know if an industry is anything to go by it's a lot of gambling and sort of you know say you know just rich people trying things and failing a lot of them and then trying another thing and until they get their way great that's
42:03Jack:really life-affirming and makes us feel all valuable, doesn't it? It is Thursday, and there's a lot of questions in, Bill, so I'll just start piling into them now. Frazzino on Blue Sky says, After recent performances versus Dortmund, Frankfurt and Manchester City, is there cause enough to believe that the tide could be turning with Thomas Frank? If we get a positive result on Saturday, can we start letting a little optimism into our lives again or do you think he's gone in the summer regardless?
42:41Xavi Simons:Well, firstly, I think the Champions League is like a completely separate entity to the Premier League at the moment and we've seen the fact that, you know, there are brilliant performances and it's great to be fourth in the Champions League, but the disparity seems to be so big between the English clubs and the non-English clubs that it's difficult to take a read on that at the moment and it'll be interesting to see what happens in the next stages. But it's great, really positive that we did that and not discrediting it. It's difficult to see how that translates to the Premier League. But I think the Man City's second half was good.
43:09Xavi Simons:The first half was the same as what we... The first half was possibly our worst first half of the season. So again, I would question whether we can actually play well for a whole game of football, I think is a massive concern. And then if you look at the two previous Premier League games, Burnley and West Ham, you know, dreadful in both of them. So I think what I would hope that we can start doing now, though, is start looking above the table rather than below it. I think now that we're sort of nine, which is essentially 10 because of our goal difference, hopefully, fingers crossed, we can stop thinking about relegation and start looking at above.
43:41Xavi Simons:Because what I would love to do is turn the season around and finish in those Europe places because we're closer to those than we are to relegation. And people are, you know, lots of people are fearing relegation, but not many people are sort of positive about the fact that we could get in Europe if we go on a run. But I'm personally, I don't think this guy is going to be the one to turn us around. I don't think things will turn around. I think we'll probably struggle in the next few league games, certainly against Man United and Arsenal. I know Nucos would have been pretty poor. I'm just not quite seeing enough still.
44:14Xavi Simons:I don't blame anyone for being optimistic about it because at the end of the day, we all want to sit there and be optimistic about our football club because no one really likes to come on and do mongering all the time. But I just don't think this guy has it. I really don't. I don't think he'll be here beyond the summer. But it would be lovely if we could go on a little run now. What I do think has happened is I do think we've looked better since we've gone to five at the back. So hopefully that might just allow us to scrape along a run of form. Where are you at with the whole Frank thing at the moment?
44:43Jack:I mean, you know, I agree with you. I don't think he's good enough. My main fear with it, though, mate, is that if he makes, if he lasts till the summer, that they won't get rid of him. Yeah, that really sucks the life out of me, I think. Yeah, my big fear is that it is going to take Spurs being an unmitigated catastrophe and then sacking him mid-way through the season for him to go. Because like I say, I think if he, say if results do pick up, great, that's good for Spurs. And I'm happy about that. But I just, I always think there'll be a limit on what we can achieve with Thomas Frank in charge.
45:20Jack:I think he's shown that already. I know people will say it's too soon to make that decision, but I don't agree with that. I just don't think the guy is up to much. I don't think there's enough of a positive energy that comes from him or what he says, what he wants to achieve.
45:43Jack:And yeah, I mean, my big fear is that like Vinay has just got the bit between his teeth on this one though and feels like he can spawn another Arteta. which you know i just think is is quite mad but yeah i mean i you know i my honestly my gut feeling on this mate is that thomas frank is probably going to be in charge for quite some time i think spurs will probably muddle through this season maybe maybe you know if we don't it goes it goes two ways to me we either end up getting closer and closer to that relegation point and you know really being in trouble or we muddled through enough we finish maybe 11th 12th something like that and the board will say well under those circumstances he did okay next season we have Kulisevsky back next season we have Madison back let's give him a chance with those players blah blah blah blah blah you know and it like you say it will be flat going into next season with him in charge and probably you know not many signings made in summer despite the promises that there will be but yeah maybe I'm just being look saying that is is pretty negative you know and I don't really want to sort of project that out there if Spurs are I don't know if Spurs feel like they are onto something then you know you want to try and back that but it's just quite hard to at the moment isn't it in the mire of it all yeah i think so and um you know if
47:22Xavi Simons:i think that a lot will come down to the sort of how the fans are in the stadiums and you know in the games and stuff if you know we continue to get this absolutely miserable home form i think the winning the draw against man city was great but you know we're still without a win in the premier league in 2026 and if we don't win one of the next three i think you'll be in big trouble because that will go into the end of February and no wins in the Premier League in 2026 will be crazy. Going into March, that will be obviously Man United, Newcastle, Man City. I think he has to try and win that Newcastle game essentially because I can't see us maybe drawing against Man United but I can't see us winning it.
47:58Xavi Simons:And then I can't see us, obviously, we know what's like did happen versus Arsenal. But I think we have to target that Newcastle game as a game to win because if we don't win against Man United and then we lose to Newcastle at home or withdraw with Newcastle, the knives are going to be out. I think there's so many home atmospheres and stuff and so many times being booed and Thomas Frank walking in front of a weigh-in and stuff that they will be able to take. But I definitely, definitely think their intention is for him to be here long-term. But I don't think that is particularly appealing to many fans at this point.
48:32Jack:Joe Scaramanga says, this is on Blue Sky, says, after the window, it's clear that the board have written off the season and Frank's time is coming. But are they too complacent about our relegation chances?
48:46Xavi Simons:Yeah, I think that was an interesting consideration as why they didn't sign anyone in January as well. I think maybe they're just thinking, well, if we are going to get rid of this guy and get someone else in, what's the point of buying him a load of players that are going to suit him? And I think that speaks more to the fact that our, you know, there's no direction in our football club. The director of football is not. because if you watch the the women's director of football interview that came out today and the director of football said there what we're doing is we're looking at players characters and we're trying to buy players that suit our identity and suit our style of play and i didn't mention the manager or anything like that i just said you know we're buying players for our identity and we're buying players for our style of play and that's essentially what a director's football director of football's role is.
49:33Xavi Simons:They are supposed to be dictating what our style of play is. But under this current regime, we've gone from Ange to Frank, who are two completely polar opposite managers and have no sort of cohesion in their style whatsoever. And as a result, we're just sort of... If we now get rid of Frank, are we just going to end up buying loads of players like Palina and Gallagher that a progressive manager might turn their nose up at? So there's no sort of strategy involved in it, which I think is a big, big problem. And maybe they've realised that, and that's why they've not gone for anyone in January. but I think in answer to the question, yes.
50:04I think if they had any genuine fears about being relegated,
50:07Xavi Simons:he would have gone after West Ham. I don't think we are too big to be relegated at the moment. I think if we don't pick up a couple of wins soon, we could get right dragged back down into it, particularly as teams like West Ham and Forest are picking up wins and stuff. So definitely something we have to keep an eye on. I think hopefully we get a win in the next couple of games, we can start looking above, as I said before, but we're definitely not too big to go down, even though they seem to think that we are.
50:32Jack:Mike on Blue Sky says, sort of in contrast to the point that's just been made above, does the hiring of another Brentford physio suggest that they are actually doubling down on Frank and he will in fact still be our manager at the start of next season? That is an interesting position, isn't it? You know, they gave him Heitinger, who was the assistant that he wanted. They've given him another sort of member of a backroom staff that I'm pretty certain he will have requested they bring in um it does seem like you know a lot of confidence and you know pieces to be giving to a guy that you know is
51:11Xavi Simons:in peril shall we say yeah I think I don't yeah I think that's that's something to read into because I think they've got eight or not I think I read there's eight backroom staff that they fired from Brentford now or something like that in total since Thomas Frank has been here so So they're definitely intending to back him and keep him here. I just suspect that the situation might become untenable if results don't pick up, that it wouldn't really matter in the first place. I think they're trying to appear competent and thinking, well, we've got a long-term plan of this and we're going to stick with it.
51:41Xavi Simons:But if Tottenham finish, say, 16th or 17th or 15th, no European football, no trophy, then you can't keep that manager, I'm afraid. You just can't do it.
51:52Jack:There's a funny one here from... jimsdahl who says what's the best way to communicate to the team that you're unhappy with them as an american who doesn't buy merch or go to games gotta get creative here bill
52:07Xavi Simons:putting you on the spot yeah that is a really interesting one isn't it i think um maybe
52:11Jack:obscenities on instagram posts and stuff my favorite thing is the uh that people that are
52:17Xavi Simons:at spurs official as if that's the the board that's reading it that's definitely the least effective way isn't it when people go fuck you don't know what you're fucking doing and all this stuff too at spurs official it's probably some poor intern that's on the other end of a desk crying yeah that is definitely um that is definitely the best way in an actual sense i'm obviously uh change from tottenham have always you know people have always messaged us to say to do this it's um you know people have always suggested to go after the sponsors and i think if we were genuinely serious about doing, you know, about sort of, you know, globalising action against the board or something, then that's probably the way to go about it.
52:54Xavi Simons:But it's obviously quite difficult to do. I reckon if like Nike got a thousand Spurs fans going, you know, in their mentions about Enoch all the time, then, you know, that's a good way to harm something like that. But what is definitely not the way is atting some poor social media intern on Twitter or Instagram.
53:12Jack:Bill, you've just mentioned change for Tottenham there. So that's a good one for this question from Houston Reveaux, who on Twitter, who says, I'll put it to you basically saying like, would change for Tottenham consider doing the, like the, so say a late walk in, as opposed to the walk out, as we saw that didn't really work in the last time that we tried to do it. Is that something that's been discussed at all at change for Tottenham?
53:43Xavi Simons:Yeah, definitely. definitely has been discussed and it's definitely something which we might look into I think what I've learned from that or what we've learned from that it's best not to try and do things that are sort of reactive to the match in the stadium because loads of people messaged us and said well you were unlucky because if we were 3-0 down loads of people would have walked out but I don't think that's right either because then people are walking out because we're 3-0 down and not because they want to send a message to the owners and the ownership, which is what Change for Tottenham is about.
54:14So I think we've learned that that kind of thing is probably not effective.
54:19Xavi Simons:I think at the end of the day, most people pay in for the stadium, pay in for the tickets. They just want to support the team and certainly wouldn't begrudge that. So we could definitely look at perhaps a late entry into the stadium. And I guess we'll still get some of the same considerations where people want to support the team from the off. And someone else has suggested as well as a sit-in at the end of the match because then the match is finished. But I think our bigger problem is sort of raising the awareness to more people inside the stadium about change to Tottenham and marketing it in a stronger and better way, which is the real issue that we're trying to deal with and the real issue that over the last week we've gone back and trying to think about.
54:56Xavi Simons:I think the fact is, and the biggest problem that we're facing is, inside that stadium there are 65 ,000 people roughly. It seems to be getting less and less by the game, but there are roughly 65 ,000 people in that stadium. And how many of them are actually aware of the things that we talk about on Twitter and online, I think, for a lot of those people inside that stadium they go to tottenham with their family they go home and then that's their tottenham done they're not consuming like twitter and youtube and podcasts talking about the owners and you know for a lot of people they might not be aware of the issues they might not be aware of change for tottenham they might not be aware of the protests um because you know twitter uh you know which is obviously our main sort of source of promotion and and youtube are quite you know and they probably speak to a few thousand people rather than 65 000 so we definitely have to diversify our marketing as well um and we're definitely trying to think of ways well if we've got a loyal couple of hundred people what's the best way of using those inside the stadium that it could be a sitting it could be a late entry um i think the problem with really significant things inside that stadium is you know people that are are against the owners and stuff will be so far spread out about inside the stadium um that it's difficult to send a message because you know if you have a thousand people walking out of the south stand it's not going to touch because there's 17 ,000 other people in there.
56:09Xavi Simons:So we definitely need to go away and think about some changes and some things that we can market better and do better, and that's definitely what we're going to be doing. But I think what is true is after the transfer window,
56:23Xavi Simons:people are rightly angry, and there's a lot of anger and there's a lot of frustration at the moment. So we're going to go away and come back, and then we'll decide how best to facilitate that voice for fans that are our angry and fine ways of doing it in a more powerful way. So yeah, definitely, definitely something we should consider.

Jack welcomes Billie T (When The Whistle Blows) back to the podcast to pile into the post-transfer window anguish at Tottenham.
We start on a lighter note with a story about Billie virtually rubbing shoulders with Xavi Simons, and explore the unlikely connection between the Dutch playmaker and the joys of Chas & Dave.
Conversation quickly turns serious as we discuss Cristian Romero's inflammatory Instagram post. Was he right to air his frustrations, or should the club captain keep the dirty laundry private? We ask if this is the beginning of the end for his time at Spurs and if we would consider selling him in the summer.
We also analyse Johan Lange's interview on the club channels after the window closed, discussing why the Technical Director cuts such an uninspiring figure during a time of crisis.
Finally, Billie answers listener questions, including a chat around Change For Tottenham's attempted 75th-minute walkout protest against Man City, and how the group might change their tactics in the future.
