In short

England’s World Cup semi-final heartbreak vs Argentina, why England “surrendered” the match, and what it means for the manager/selection debate (Tuchel). Then the hosts pivot to Spurs: whether to keep Christian Romero and Jed Spence, and how to value Lucas Bergvall at £50m.

Guests

“Baker” (co-host). No other guest identities are clearly specified in the transcript beyond Baker.

Key claims

England felt like a “last chance” for a golden generation; Spain looked dominant despite an “underwhelming” tournament; England’s squad choices left them “limited” and unable to press/drive, with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka not at full capacity. Tuchel is criticized for selection/substitutions and for being unable to change the game. Romero is world-class but inconsistent/defensive concentration lapses; Spence’s stock is high after a good tournament, making a sale plausible.

Notable examples

England repeatedly peppered crosses vs Argentina but couldn’t break through; Konza substitution triggered “we’re stuffed” talk; Messi being challenged by Spence; Romero/Argentina defensive lapses around a goal; Spurs links to Pedro Porro (new contract) and potential bids for Bergvall (Forest £38m offer, Spurs want £50m).

1:50Jack:Hello everybody, welcome back to Rule the Roost podcast. I'm not doing any of those World Cup shenanigans now no, no, no, no, no nobody needs to hear any of that do they, Baker? nobody wants any of that you know, Carnival de Perret at the top and everything you're not going to do a third place reaction as well on the weekend? I don't even want to watch it do you? you know? no I was just saying before I go on holiday Saturday morning and I was like oh, am I going to be able to get there in time for the third and I was like I don't care I don't care if I'm there in time for it or not why do they still insist on doing this it's so unfair and it's so miserable to two teams that haven't made the final it's so unfair that every single time there is a tournament at some point you have that question don't you a friend of are they are they are they still doing a third fourth playoff like like because everyone wants it to end but we have to check whether they are doing it or not um and then it always turns out yes they are haven't they given it like a different name like the bronze something oh yeah the bronze game or something I don't know the bronze game nobody wants it the players don't want it the fans don't want it absolutely nobody wants it only weirdos want it perverts does Kobe Mano want it do you think Kobe Mano wants it get himself some minutes maybe maybe well Kane probably it counts towards Golden Boot actually doesn't it third place player does count towards Golden Boot yeah yeah there you go Kane wants it then doesn't he big stat padding H wants it don't they big stat padding H yeah Baker are you just on the game because I would say I don't often you know I don't often feel that gutted about I do support England and I do get quite excited by it but for example losing the Euros final against Italy or also the Euros final against Spain it sucked and then I was like okay fine you know it wasn't anywhere close to Spurs losing a Champions League final for example or spurs even losing like an fa cup for semi-final or something like that this world cup though i i do feel quite gutted i i really do feel quite gutted and that that's sort of tinged with a sense of like it feels like the last chance maybe for quite some time pickford's getting on a bit kane's getting on a bit bellingham is great so and we got anderson as well who's great but you know it's like who's going to be the next big striker i don't think they've really announced themselves yet i don't know it just it it feels like again another bit of a semi-golden generation sort of not quite managing to do it and it brings up these conversations about what's wrong with the english mentality at this stage in competitions blah blah blah blah blah you know Yeah, it feels a waste.

4:39It feels, from a time perspective, is, do you remember the League Cup final when we sacked Mourinho? Yeah. Before it. And there was part of me, I remember when we sat Mourinho, me thinking to myself, to be honest with you, I'm okay with it. Because I was so, so out of love with him by that point that I was like, I almost don't want him to have the glory of we won it under him, under that type of football. that's how I felt at the time and then like about a year later I was like well that was stupid because it was an incredible opportunity and I should have been like I should have just been an all-in in it because actually once you had that trophy once you had that just no one can throw it at you you've done it you've got it you know I think we always look for that perfection of how we how we end up doing stuff so which is why it's like and we saw obviously the the and season for us of of us winning the Europa is it definitely was not a perfect season but you didn't really care.

5:36You didn't really care. You just wanted that. We got that trophy. We got, you know, all the dopamine hit of it afterwards, every single piece of media you saw that I think, you know, is when you come to this, you were like, I know this was just an incredible opportunity. I mean, we were chatting during the Spain-France game and I don't think he was probably fully expected us to beat France. Sorry, beat France or Spain, like in terms of what we're seeing from them. But once you're there in the final, it's an opportunity. and yesterday yeah well i guess it feels so sore this morning and and sore last night was it was an opportunity and it feels like it feels like we completely surrendered it in the in the manner

6:15Jack:in which it happened i mean argentina they've come back now in in several games they've shown this mentality if you like um i think it's always hard to know isn't it it's hard to know how proper football man you want to go about this stuff i'm always teetering on that line because there's a part of me that thinks about mentality thinks about the never say die attitude of the argentinian squad for example to keep pulling themselves over the line in this way for what it's worth i do i think they're going to get totally dismantled by spain in the final um but regardless of that i do yeah because because and this is where my proper football man isms end because i think that kind of stuff only can drag you so far it can only take you so far but when you come against a team that And, you know, Spain against France, Spain looked like they had 20 men on the pitch.

7:03Jack:They're so technically brilliant. The way in which they narrow space for the opposition, the way in which they press, the way in which they provide options for one another when they're on the ball is just, it's astonishing to me. And they've pretty much walked to the final. It's been quite an underwhelming journey for them. And I think I've completely not paid attention to them. And I think, to be honest, I think the wider conversation around the World Cup has not really paid attention to Spain at all. which is kind of wild considering they're reigning European champions. And I think their managers lost like one game in about 35, 36 international games.

7:38Jack:But regardless, I think he's pretty much won all the rest of them other than the draw that they had against Camembert. It's got its 50th cap in the weekend, hasn't lost a game. It's just, it's astonishing. But again, though, like with England, they just, they did seem to go in. I don't know I don't I don't know how much I want to indulge this because I do feel like they went in on themselves but then I also feel like they've just played at the Azteca in excruciating heat and humidity and degrees above sea level and everything and then the game that they've just played in Miami is one of the hottest games of the tournament the game against Norway must have absolutely sat them and drained them they've also traveled and I know this is sounds all very copian but I think this stuff does matter.

8:27Jack:They've travelled a considerable amount more than the Argentinian squad have had to. So I do think these things all factor in. With that said, with that said, it's another big game, isn't it, where England just, they were there. We were like, we were in touching distance. They were within touching distance and then just sat in their box. Sat in their box and decided to give Leo Messi one of, if we're not going to start the whole conversation, but one of the greatest footballers of all time. The amount of time and space that we did constantly, peppering crosses into the ball time after time after time.

9:01Jack:It just, it's astounding. It's absolutely astounding. I still can't quite fathom it. I think that's why I'm so frustrated by it. Where do you stand on the Tuchel thing? So I trace it back to the squad announcement. I think that's you have to start with there and as soon as that squad announcement came out there was some really obvious stuff that everyone went why has he done that then like why is he taking Henderson like there was a straight off like why are you doing that like take Wharton over Henderson I think everybody there's not a person alive that wouldn't say that that was that's what you do that's what everyone would do and then we have then Liveramento gets injured and you have an opportunity to the one really obvious thing, we haven't got enough fullbacks, you bring Trent.

9:52No, I bring Chalibur. And you're like, okay, so we are now limited in certain areas because of what you've done. And then he takes Kobi Mainu and decides, I don't know if he saw what he actually said yesterday, but he was basically saying, you can't plan tense games, can't do it. I've seen him train, can't plan tense situations. I don't know how they would recreate tense situations in training to be able to know how you can operate under 10 situations, but that's what he went with. So he's limited himself in certain areas and then he becomes incredibly then reliant on certain individuals. And from the very, very first game, it was really, really apparent that Declan Rice is not the Declan Rice he's been at Arsenal all season.

10:36And I know there's like sort of sins of illness and stuff, but it doesn't matter whether the illness was there or not. Like he's knackered.

10:42Jack:he was half a player for most of the tournament he's half the player like he just can't do what what he can do and so if you've got him and then you've also got Saka who's also not able to play and these things would have been apparent to an extent would have been apparent you know you've left out Cole Palmer you've left out Foden yeah well if you knew there was anything that was an issue potentially around Saka then I think one of those two guys as somebody who knows that bigger stage suddenly becomes a lot like all of us would would take those two over say Madueki but we kind of knew why Madueki was going because we were like okay if you need him for 20 minutes and you need somebody to be a really direct runner then the likes of Madueki and Rashford are really useful.

11:27Imagine buying your kid a toy only to find the batteries aren't

12:35Jack:This summer, serve up the cookout classics. Craft mayo and dressing. Toss green salads with delicious ranch dressing or zesty Italian. Serve smooth, craveably creamy potato salads with mayo. We all know it's not a cookout without craft. But if you know the fitness isn't right, which they should know, and they knew he was struggling, and they should know. It's not like Sacco magically got injured in mid-June. He's had these problems all season. they'd know sports science wise where where Declan Rice was at there should have been adjustments made but it's not this video of Saka at like the training camp looks like he can barely even walk barely even walk I'm not I'm not saying this to like you know to play into limp memes and all that I'm being brutally serious it looks like he's even struggling to move around at a normal pace like I've on a certain level I feel for the guy you know Arsenal and all that crap aside like Arteta is probably limited his career.

13:35This is what it takes to beat Man City, like effectively, and get to a Champions League final in the same season. Like, look at what we did trying to get, you know, is to a Europa and how bad it cost us on that. To do what they've done, it will have some, there will be some blowback off it, you know, and England should have seen that, you know, Tuchel should have seen that coming. So when you start at that point and go, okay, you then bring into, when he then had the opportunity to make changes or the game starts turning against them, he hasn't got it. He hasn't, even if Jordan Henderson hadn't broke his arm, I just don't see a world where if we were struggling for run, for ability to drive and run with the ball, that he would have ever had the balls to say, Declan Rice, you come off at halftime because you're just not on here.

14:26And Jordan Henderson, you come off at the second half against Argentina and play against Enzo Fernandez. So therefore what you do is you then overuse Rice, but in terms of overusing him, you just end up dropping and dropping and dropping because he's not able to drive us out. So he's created, you know, I think there's some people that have said, well, we were already dropping with all substitutions. We were, but it's because of the squad makeup that was chosen by Tuchel, so you can also blame him for that. If we had Wharton, I would have trusted Wharton and said, look, Rice isn't right. Play Wharton.

14:59he will push forward with tempo on a front foot. That's the most astounding one.

15:04Jack:I'm not going to revise history. I can see why a Foden, a Grealish, I mean, Grealish is a bit out of the conversation because I think he's injured anyway. Foden, Palmer, I could see it. I could just about see why you're not taking that maverick player. And I think even to call Foden a maverick player is probably not fair. He's played in it. He's at least fit towards the end of the season. And he was there. It was just a case of minutes he played. Palmer, I understand a bit more because he clearly had been carrying stuff all season. He's had groin issues all season. So I kind of get you have them at the time.

15:42But you can't let Palmer have the summer off, but also then take Saka who just can't even run. So there's that root cause bit is that we were set up with limited options. So then when it's like, well, actually, we couldn't get out, we didn't have the energy, he didn't have much choice. If you think about it, what else would I have done yesterday? Well, in the previous game, he had to throw Rhys James into centre midfield to try and get some drive out of midfield. But because he started Rhys James, because of course he has to start Rhys James, because he's got no other right backs, because he also didn't bring Trent Alexander-Arnold, who all of us would have brought.

16:15Jack:Because Nico Riley was in centre midfield yesterday, wasn't he, for a while? So it's all like the squad make-up. We know that as Tottenham fans. We've seen the limitations of if you haven't got the right guys in the squad, then the football massively suffers. He put us into that position where then actually we felt like sitting ducks. And then he contributed it with the substitutions he made. And just, you could see. Now, if you went on Twitter at all last night or anything like that, or if you were in a social space or in your WhatsApp chats, wherever you were, as soon as that Konza substitution was made, there wasn't a chat alive, there wasn't somewhere alive where there wasn't a, we're stuffed.

16:54We were 1-0 up in the semi-final with one quarter of the game to go because we work in quarters now. And every single person wasn't looking forward to winning the semi-final. Every single person was, we're fucked. And you knew that as soon as they scored, you were like, well, the best we can now hope for is penalties. Because we've dismantled any cohesion of a team to such an extent. We've played such a risk-free reward game that there is now only risk. And the best chance we have is penalties. So that's why I have no sympathy in anyone who wants to take apart Tuchel over what was done. He was making it about himself with the substitutes he made.

17:32He would have claimed the full glory. He would have been, you know, we've all said it. We've all used the term that team got Mourinho'd over the time like that. And I feel like it was Tuchel trying to be that they got Tuchel'd, you know, and bring it about him. So guess what is this in terms of the abuse? my concern is it becomes resentment really quickly and then you're like you only get a tournament you only get these opportunities so few times it's just a massive setback if that

18:01Jack:happens happens again would you bin him yeah i don't i just don't think you should have any i don't i don't think in international football you need i just don't think you should have any carryover it's i think it's untenable now i think that there's already whether or not you want to blame Gabriel Clark or not there's that touchiness as is evident between certain figures in the camp and Tuchel as well already I think Kane I think Kane had a little dagger for Tuchel last night as well in some of the stuff he was saying post-match we might be we might be joining the dots but if a lot of this felt a bit tacit it felt like some kind of tacit acceptance that they didn't agree with the decisions made by the manager just to just to raise this on the other side of things, Michael Cox of The Athletic has made the point that Tuchel was naturally responding to what the England players were doing.

18:47Jack:He noted that they were all blowing, they were naturally all essentially just sitting back, not really being expansive, not really running forwards anymore and Tuchel needed to respond to what he was seeing on the pitch in front of him, which I think is a fairly kind reading of the situation. You can't waste squad spots. If you ask somebody in three months' time to name the squad, they'll either not put Livermento in it or they'll forget that Chalaba was called up to replace Livermento because you're like, was he? You know, Mainu, no minutes. Like, yes, we are going to, we had a really hard, tough, long season.

19:26There was the previous game where he took two Arsenal guys off to bring two Arsenal guys on. I'm like, oh, well, it's just people that have played loads of minutes and other guys have played loads of minutes. I mean, Eze and Madowiecki have not played, oh well, Eze and Saka wasn't there on for Madowiecki and Rice but you're like, We've got a huge number of people that have played really long seasons. You needed to make the most of their squad. And once you started excluding Pia, once you kept Henderson, Henderson and Mainou, two midfielders, played five minutes between them in the tournament. It's bizarre.

19:56It's not right. And what I would like to see from it, this is my idea. I was never a big Gareth Southgate fan, but I don't know if you've seen the quote, but back in March, Tuchel, this is the bit that I feel makes it the most untenable, was Tuchel talked about Gareth's team and said that they were more afraid to drop out of the tournament than having the excitement and hunger to win it. And I'm like, what would I do? I'd get Gareth in his chain mail, full on, sword out, meet him off the airport. Did you? That Battle of the Bastards style, like pulling the... That's how I'd want him to be put out of the job.

20:32Get Gareth to come and say, he'd do it, I reckon. If nothing else, he'd put the waistcoat on one more time.

20:36Jack:Do you think the FA will be asking Pep if he really fancies the Italy job? You know, because he's been linked there, hasn't he? Do you think they'll be saying, go on, go on, Pep. You got a good, you like Oasis, don't you? You know, you get on with Noel. Do you want to? It's funny. The Tuchel bit felt very similar to a point of trying to be smart, trying to be cooler. It sort of smacks me a little bit of the times of how I felt with Langer for us. But yeah. I mean, England throughout this tournament were very Tottenham under Thomas Frank. I really felt that. Like, maybe we've got that, I don't know, that sort of PTSD from us.

21:17Yeah, maybe the reason why I want Southgate to get up and show him on a sword and meet him off the plane is because of Thomas Frank. Maybe really what we're really saying here is my issues are Thomas Frank.

21:27Jack:Thomas's. No more Thomas's. Down with Thomas's. Down with Thomas's. None of them. like get rid of him

21:38it was

21:39Jack:I've got to say there was that there was that one little moment I did enjoy on a certain you know caveman level seeing Lionel Messi get pushed around a bit but that little that kind of little moment when Spence half kind of challenged him and flicked the ball Messi managed to bring it under control and he had Kane come in and try and just basically take him out he just rode the tackle rode the tackle again from I think it was from Anderson he rode a tackle And you just kind of, if you look at me and think, he might be small, but he is fucking hard as well. You know, he's so skillful. He's hard.

22:12And it's just, it reminded me, you know, of when Barcelona played us at Wembley and he just had a messy performance against Tottenham.

22:20Jack:And you just kind of think, I can't even really be that angry about this. He's just, all of the things that people say about him being an alien and a freak and stuff. You're like, it's all true. It's all true. And I think also the whole Messi-Ronaldo, them against one another thing, as they get older, it just seems almost more looted. Like Ronaldo, don't get me wrong, an incredible goal scorer and an amazing athlete. But the fact there's this comparison between him and Messi just seems bonkers to me. It seems absolutely balmy. It's just not the same. It's not the same. Just an utter freak. Utter freak, yeah.

23:00I remember, God, many, many, many years ago going to Barcelona to watch them play. And that was one of the things with your eyes that I couldn't grasp was how he managed to stay up whilst getting absolutely battered at all opportunities and just the amount he would ride. It's just phenomenal strength.

23:23Jack:Let's talk about Spurs. Look, World Cup's over. Forget about it. Spurs are winning the league. How much did you enjoy, on a transition from England to Spurs, how much did you enjoy that Jed Spence tackle? The Ledley King-esque darting back. Brilliant. The noise. The noise I made. Brilliant. Like, brilliant. And just what a performance in large from him. I saw a more uncomfortable take that, I'm not sure who it was, so apologies if you listen to this and I'm not crediting you, but I saw on Twitter somebody essentially making the point that for all the great things that spencer's doing throughout this game throughout the entirety of the second half argentina targeted him and that's where all of their opportunities were coming from from spencer's side which again is probably a bit unfair but maybe there's something in that um but i i don't i don't really want to i don't really want to sort of look at this in in a negative way i mean what i really want to look at there's this so there's two two talking points me that are Spurs-centric out the back of this game.

24:25Jack:And it's kind of the same point, just appropriated to two different players. One is Christian Romero, love him or hate him, very, very annoying man, very selfish man, clearly, very preoccupied with Argentina and himself and what it is that he wants. However, as we saw in the Europa League final, as we saw last night playing for Argentina, he is a cut above. He just is. And I like, people like to deny it, I feel but he's I think he's a very very good player and a player that I would imagine that Roberto De Zerbe if he's galvanized and if he wants to stay at Spurs and if he wants to play for De Zerbe and feels enticed by the manager enticed by the project enticed by the business that Spurs have done this season don't we want to hold on to Christian Romero and I see also Jed Spence a versatile player who right might not be exactly within the type of mold of fallback that roberto deservey likes however is versatile is tenacious has clearly showed that with a bit of love with a bit of support can be a shining light in a team he was one of i'm gonna say it mate he was one of england's better players at this tournament overall i feel really especially in the knockout stages anyway so i guess with both of those how do you feel because they are two players that you would say are probably on the chopping block as narrative would dictate right now who go on first romero yeah go on let's let's do that big horrible bastard that's exactly how I feel to be honest with you is is is the thing the thing I think is watching Romero you will only ever you can't help but especially when he's your bastard like enjoy some of the ridiculous skill that that man has is is the footwork as he sort of got himself out of trouble um last night you're like well that's just what he does like he is an unbelievable footballer he's world-class in terms of the talent he has but and i and i repeatedly say but i still don't think he's the guy that i want to go into battle for me because like every single game they turn off at some point they turn off that defense they just didn't keep cleans at all that's one of the reasons why we expect against bane to win on the weekend is because they just the concentration is just not there you know you think about the the even the goal that we scored last night and you're like just help me if I'm trying to picture it where was Romero during that goal like what where was he because I don't know where he was but I know he wasn't I know he wasn't blocking the cross and I know he wasn't challenging Gordon and just so many moments like that happen but I feel like we get blinded because he's such an absurd talent in terms of his progressive passes the way he carries the ball um how cool it is sometimes when he does just dismiss people so easily in terms of taking the ball off them and marching up the field.

27:17He's cool. Like he's the sort of guy that if I was playing far other side, like he'd just be the king of the world and stuff like that. But when he plays for Argentina, you just know how much it means for him. And even with that, they're still conceding. So if we only get 80, 90 % Christian Romero, which is I think the best you can ever hope for. I think we've got it long enough now to know that the best we're ever going to get, again, it comes back to that. There's just that level of resentment. There's just that little bit that he's so intrinsically associated with the last two seasons. You know, the media, I mean, obviously he's decided to try and, he's trying to fight back, isn't he, against what Gary Neville said about him.

28:01But I thought what Gary Neville said was completely fair. He literally said about him and Lissandro that they are incredible. He said they're the best, worst partnership, which is exactly how I feel about. Both those guys, they do unbelievable things. And then they do things that you're like, this is just basic. And if the money's right, I take it. Would I be really upset to sell him for 40 million or something like that? Because I'm looking at it and saying, look, Inter are the guys that are looking at coming for him. I don't see Inter coming in with 60, 70 million, do you? Not really, probably not.

28:36Jack:Unless it's some sort of structured deal or whatever, who knows, you know. It does make me want to vomit the idea of selling him for 40 million quid. but I do think it's He's only 27, isn't he? He's young. Yeah, I don't think he's that. I think he might have been 26. But I just think we're past it. I think it's tainted. Yeah, and I think it's not just from Spurs either, right? The circus around Romero. As annoying as he is and as frustrating as he is, I do think he gets unfairly reffed as well in the Premier League. 30:04Jack:I do. I stand by that. Like, he doesn't help himself. It's not saying that. yeah i still acknowledge that he doesn't help himself he's 28 now actually he's 28 now is he there we go old man get rid get rid um yeah i i think as well part a very useful part of the context here as well i've seen it reported by i think the athletic have gone with this at certain points um i can't remember who else i've seen a couple but the antics at the end of last season going to argentina essentially having to be pulled back for the final game of the season by all accounts did not go down very well with the squad whatsoever like he's not a very popular guy at tottenham anymore i think across the board so yeah that kind of makes it untenable as well i i can fully see that you know i don't know about you but i can't get enough of pre-season content so so just even just watching like the first training video and just seeing the guys around and stuff like that it feels like it was like a nice place it feels like did you see deserve in that intense kind of hip thrusting weight exercise he was doing.

31:08Jack:I did not see Deservey's hip thrust. It might have been like a Russian kettlebell on his back type. But he was just in the zone. He was fully in the zone. I didn't see Deservey do that. I was too busy. I was really like counting. I was actually like counting. Who's there? Who's there trying to get my list of if they were to play? If they were to play tomorrow, what would the team be? Like that type of stuff. And you're like, oh, shit, we need Ash Phillips to play. Fernandez. Fernandez excites me as well. he just it's just a unit he's a unit and he looks up for it like really up for it i just i don't i don't see a place back from romero i really don't so i i think it's that i fully see a place for spence i just question whether spence sees a place for him because i i think spence is very like a gadget man in terms of like you use him in real specific utilization um i think we've seen at this tournament as a as a left back i do like i wonder if if i wonder if there are frailties at right back which actually gets get hidden at times at left back and that's why i think i probably like him more at left back um but you know if you're going to play a right-sided left back then it it changes the shape you've you're building the so much of your team around that guy in the way that you're then going to have to play to build up to defend kind of makes training harder is there also the slightly kind of uncomfortable truth that has been floated that with him having a good tournament it actually means his stock is fairly high and now is the best time to capitalize yeah when we when we did the old sell buy no no buy it was just just it was just sell it's who can we sell with this this squad who are we getting rid of i said i i kind of fully expected that this would create a big bid for him and i think it would be i think from his point of view a big bid comes in that he looks like he's going to start 30 odd games i think he's going to want to take it and i still feel at that position it is very very interesting because actually he's very good we couldn't i just don't think we could replace him with a player of a similar quality as an understand understudy to pedro porro because they'd be looking at pedro porro who's had just the most incredible world cup and has just signed a brand new contract and everybody who comes in is just going to be like well i'm only coming in as an understudy um that's a tough that's a tough gig he's a tough gig to replace i think you just don't want to sell him you just watch it yeah exactly exactly I want to keep him for the vibes and I like him.

33:44Jack:I think he's a misunderstood character. You know, I think he's unfairly maligned to be honest. And it's... He's won the hearts of a nation, I think, over the course of this workout. He'll play absolutely plenty. Like, he'll play... Like, if Poirot has been any time out, then he's nailed on the best right back. He'll play cup games anyway at right back. But then you look at left back situation, you think, well, your doggy is permanently injured and probably not young. And maybe he just is the starting left back anyway. So I'd have no doubts that he plays 25 to 30 games for us across the competitions.

34:22Now, whether he starts that many, maybe not, but he's, again, an incredible option to bring off the bench because of his pace. That's how England have used him to really good credit. This tournament is bloody useful. We've really seen how useful that pace is off the bench.

34:38Jack:Pedro Porro, you have mentioned him. Player of the tournament in his position, probably. I'd say he's going to make team of the tournament, you would imagine. For a player that, you know, I guess can be frustrating. I'm not going to pretend otherwise. At times, at times. I do think it felt like anyway, everybody had a bit of a collective moment at some point last season when they were like, he is actually really good. He's really, really good. and when he signed his new contract, it felt pretty massive at the time. Now it feels enormous. Now, because I'm looking at Pedro Porro and I'm thinking those sort of links that we had a little bit with Barcelona, with, I think it was, I can't remember if it was Barcelona or Real, one of them, and Manchester City as well, I think we're talking about maybe trying to get him back.

35:26Jack:I mean, after this World Cup, I think you can feasibly say that's an£80 million player now in this market. They're the only teams that would get him. We're going to be shopping around for Romero. We're going to be looking at how can we get the most money at Spence if we were looking at that situation. For Porro, it really is just going to be a game of if somebody was to come in for him, the only way in which anyone was potentially... Like if a Barcelona or Madrid come in for him with huge money and he wants to go, then it's going to become a problem for us. But this is important context, just to throw back to the Romero point as well.

36:03Jack:This is important context, isn't it, Baker? Because I think all too easily say nace, so people who are, say, staunch Romero defenders that will say you're an idiot if you want to get rid of him, will often sort of say there's an air of jingoism about it or there's an air of people not kind of appreciating his temperament or something like that. But the fact, to your point, that a player with his ability really just isn't actually fancied by a Real or a Barca, that means something. That shows you that it validates a lot of the feelings of caution that we have that surround Christian Romero. I can't really get my words out properly.

36:45Jack:I can't find the correct phrase. I think that's the same in all of them. Even, you know, do Buscovich next if you want. It's kind of time and stuff like that, but it's a similar game, isn't it? I think we all, last season we were all like, oh, well, Buscovich will never play for us. he'll go to Bayern Munich. Guess what? He didn't go to Bayern Munich. He went to a club that chanced their arm on many young talents knowing that there's relatively low downside in that if it doesn't work out they'll resell. But potentially there's a huge upside that you end up with£100 million player. And we got a 20 % sell-on.

37:18And we got a 20 % sell-on. With Poirot, yeah, look, he's been unbelievable. And that can't, that can't be good in Spence's head, can it? Because I don't think Spence, like, I think Spence, if he was transferring somewhere, do you think he would transfer somewhere to go be their starting left back or do you think he would transfer somewhere that was only going to go be their starting right back? I still think he'd want to go somewhere to be their starting right back and therefore he must look at Porro having a new contract, being one of the players of the tournament and think, if the offer's right, my stock is high, this is the time for me to go.

37:54I struggle to get in the way of it as much as I don't want it to happen.

37:58Jack:I know what you mean. I know what you mean. I mean, I think the first offer we saw from Everton was 20-something mil, which I think is derisory. Yeah, that's just nonsense. No, you're looking off the top of my head, 35 plus. You know, that's kind of, I think that's sort of the ballpark. Minimum. Minimum, because we would buy some kid who we have no idea whether they'll work out any good or not for 15 to 20. I mean, what was Sousa? Sousa was 18, wasn't he? Million? Yeah, you're buying a guy who's just going to be nowhere near ready. Thirteen, okay,£13 million of Sousa, to be fair. Who did I see us linked with?

38:37Jack:It's Nico Williams. Nico Williams. Yeah. Oh, mate, when I saw the bomber of potential Nico Williams, everyone did the same, didn't we? We all did the same. Yes, at last. We are a big club. it's just the Roy Hodgson it's the excitement and then the oh yeah it's exciting we all did the same thing we all got really excited hey I do like Nico Williams he's you know from the other as I was told when I bemoaned it apparently he's actually very very good he's excellent he's really excellent and he's versatile really a lot closer in profile to Pedro Porro than Spence's. Really a lot closer in that, can do that playmate, playmate can come off the wing, likes a shot.

39:30He is definitely something where if we were able to buy him and sell Spence and make a profit, I'd probably go with it.

39:39Jack:Vescovic, are you sad about him going? Or are you just, I think we've spoken about it before. I'm more sad about the narrative, right? I'm sad about the, it was very exciting when we signed him when he was 14, 15, and people were already saying, this kid is going to be one of the best players in world football in 10 years' time. I think for me, I start to, I'm just talking about on a personal level and maybe, yeah, it is an emotional lashing out. But when you start to get too much of this, his agent wants this, his agent says he should be doing that, his agent should be doing this. And again, I think it's the Athletic that said that when De Zerbi came in last year, his perspective was, this is a fucking child.

40:14Jack:I'm not being told what's what by a teenager. you know he's not he's years off of being ready for me and that's yeah so that's the stance on it and as we said last time if you're talking four years down the line he'd be 23 24 at that point anyway which is kind of normal for a center back in the premier league um yeah but look whatever if he goes on and does well at brighton and they sell him for 100 mil great we got 20 % sell on clause and it is what it is you know you can't you can't win them all can you ultimately no no no If we're comfortable selling Romero, then we shouldn't really be batting much.

40:50I think a round of a screech thing is disappointing, but take the money. And it's just no guarantee, is it? They spend good money, like Ruto's there. They spend 46 million euros to get him out of Leeds when he was a championship. So they spend those monies and they don't always become the starters. They're continually putting those types of things in. Gruder, 30 million euros. I was just looking. Obviously, you know, other guys like Cadioglu, they bought Cadioglu at 30 million. Then they bought the Kuiper to also then replace Cadioglu for 20 million. And then Cadioglu got his place back last season.

41:33They try their arm with a lot of these ones. They've been trying to replace their forwards for a long time. A Welbeck just keeps getting the place. They bought two great guys. They bought Zimaster. He was like 25 million euros. And then they bought, is it Kostoulis? They bought at the start of last season. Most of these guys are like 19, 20, and they buy them with a view of, we will do stuff, we might loan them, it might work out, we might not. They bought Coppola, I think, at the start of last season. They've sold him already today, I think. They do these 20, 30 million euros. So 50 million is a lot.

42:05Don't get me wrong, it's a lot for them. But no guarantee. If it is, we'll get some benefit.

42:10Jack:I sort of throw back to the point that Flav's been making on the Fighting Cop quite a lot. in short is we finished 17th twice in a row we're not a crush we we can't we can't we can't we can't look at this player in five years time being great for spurs we need to be good now we need to be yeah like i i not just we need to be i want us to be good i'm sick of watching spurs be abject i'm sick of hoping that players will come good i'm sick of getting to big games and seeing more experienced players on other teams outsmart players like a Vuscovic, a Bergwald, a Gray. And again, it's no disrespect to those.

42:47Jack:They are young players. They're developing young players that Spurs have not managed or handled properly. The situation with Vuscovic to me is not a failing from Tottenham. It's that the player does not want to be on the roadmap that Spurs have outlined for him. He doesn't want to be a part of that. He wants to play football now. Spurs don't want him to play football now thus this is the best this is the best for all parties we don't need noise we don't need an agent mouthing off all the time we don't need a player that's unhappy running down a contract or whatever we've gotten good money for him we've gotten good money for a kid and we have a massive sell-on fee if he goes on to be amazing so i just it's gonna be a big club we're gonna have to make big decisions and some of them are just not going to be that It's a real positive that we are having to make decisions like this.

43:37For a long time, for most of last season, it was just, can we get a fucking team on the pitch? Now we're having to make decisions about these are guys that we would have been incredibly grateful to have on the pitch that we're now happy to say, actually. It's been months where we were like, God, if only we could get that Buscovich out of his loan and we could play him and do that stuff. I wish Bergvau was fit and Romero was just available. And now we're moving on potentially without any of those guys.

44:04Jack:Well, then on the big, uncomfortable, difficult chats, it's been reported today that Spurs have turned down £38 million from Nottingham Forest for Lucas Bergvall. They want£50 million for him. Again, it sort of feels quite like, it feels a bit like the Vizcovic discussion, doesn't it? Look, we've just signed two central midfielders, both club record fees at the point at which they were signed. Bergvau probably ain't going to get that much time, is he? He's going to be relegated to getting cup appearances, substitute appearances. He's a player that wants to play. If we get£50 million for him, I'm kind of all right with that.

44:41Jack:And look, do you want to know my hottest take on this as well, mate? I'll tell you my hottest, hottest take, based on eye test and proper football man intuition, I just get the gut feeling his ceiling isn't as high as people think it is. That's what I'm going to say on Bergvau. Yeah. you kind of want to be excited about him don't you like like i feel like i'm over optimistic with with players especially young players when they when they play is is because i'm i'm dreaming in the next cane i'm dreaming of bail you know and and and what we saw of that boy becoming a man and just putting us on his back um i think you can't help but be that way but again with bergfau if you ask me what's his best position i can't get there where do i see him be ending up for us i don't know do i see him starting very often no therefore if we can get 50 million quid from it like like we realistically if we get 50 million and you bring in savinho at a similar-ish price do the deal do the deal um because i know where that guy's gonna play and i know we're short on wingers we are still short you know obviously we've seen odabair kudis and kudaseski all in the training videos, but they're very quick to point out that they're doing rehabilitation.

45:59I'm assuming that none of those three are going to Australia. I don't know. We haven't announced the squad, have we? Yeah. No, not yet. We've got the weird game. Is it Tuesday or what? 22nd. What day is 22nd? What day is 22nd? I don't even know where we're at. Wednesday. So we're playing NK Dons on the 22nd, but it's behind closed door.

46:19Jack:Yeah. And then Auckland FC on the 26th. On the 23rd. So they just... You'd assume none of the World Cup players will be there? None of the World Cup players will be there? None of the World Cup players, but even if the guys are going to play, they're not going to want them to go and do a massive long flight having just got kicked around playing MK Dons. So behind closed doors, it's going to be maybe, what, two games of 45 minutes, I imagine, and completely different teams starting and roll off, roll on subs, whatever they need to do for it. We deserve his chance to have a good look at your Lanxiers, your Moors.

46:52Jack:Yeah, we're getting nothing from it. We're getting nothing from it. Even that Bergvau one, as I think about it, I'm like, if it meant that we kept more in the squad by losing Bergvau, I think I'd rather do that, wouldn't you? Yeah, I'm really, really interested to know what happens with this because I've seen some, I think it's maybe Ali Gold that said that Dortmund have been sniffing around maybe like a two-year loan for him or something like that, which I quite like the sound of. I quite like the sound of that. although the flip side of it is to me is a move to Dortmund really probably signals that he'll end up staying there permanently probably you know a long-term loan even maybe a loan of a year feels like would be one of those if he hits the ground running and he's banging it in at Dortmund he's not going to come back to Spurs to fight for a place you know he's going to say I want to stay playing in front of a hundred thousand people every week in front of a yellow wall and bagging loads of goals in the bundesliga either way yeah i to your point yeah i i look at mikey more now even just a year or so ago he looked like a little boy now he's suddenly filled out he's a man like i mean real football man but also weird talking about a very young man as an old man is but on my algorithm it came up uh you know sometimes you get like tattooists and stuff well there's a tattoo artist came up and he was tattooing Mikey Moore and he was giving Mikey, so his Mikey Moore with his shirt off, it's getting worse.

48:25But he's had tattooed his debut on his arm. And I was like, he's so spurs, keep him, keep him, don't loan him out, get him in.

50:02Jack:Go to nocd.com to learn more. It's the best thing though, is it? It's the most exciting thing a kid from the academy. It's why the Harry Kane story was just so good, but it wasn't quite enough. Yeah, it's just the idea that he did it. He did it as his first tattoo. His first tattoo and it's on his arm. The bit that I did think about, I was like, yeah, the thing is, like, it was quite thin. He'll just get a sleeve and just replace it if he needs to, if we fuck him off. But there's just that part of it. I just think I'd love us to keep Lang Sheeran more around. I really would. can you indulge because you said it off air to me and maybe I'm throwing you under the bus a bit mate but you were making just a speculative little comparison between Deserby and how he likes to nurture young strikers what we've seen him do before at Brighton and what maybe maybe we'll see him do with Will Langshaid I mean it's kind of gone badly for Evan Ferguson since mine but he was partly that was injury and just didn't seem the same player, but just as a big lad that can...

51:11And whenever you see, again, little shorts of stuff of just the technique of the way he bangs the ball, you're like, it feels so Kane-esque. It feels so Kane-esque. Again, a young man off of Marisha, off training. Yes, I'm watching that again.

51:26Jack:But his strikes are so clean though, aren't they? Strikes are so clean. We've apparently turned down 15, 20 mil or something from sporting this summer. It's significant. in it? Derf. Such a derf of strikers. Again, on the England front, but I don't know if you saw the tweet or something about by the time the next major tournament is, players, English strikers that will be under 30 by the next tournament that have had five or more games in the Premier League and there's like three of them. It's like Liam DeLapp. It's in Ketia, isn't it? Ketia. I can't remember what the last one was. It's Dane Scarlett.

52:04Dane Scarlett. There you go. Yeah. It's insane.

52:08Jack:It's pretty wild, isn't it? For all the talk about, like, let's get rid of Kane, let's get past the Kane era, that's now starting to envelop a lot of the post-Argentina discourse. Well, who's stepping in? Because Ivan Toney, what was the point of him coming onto the pitch last night? And so on and so forth. Bearing in mind, this is a player that Thomas Frank wanted us to sign as well. Langtier-Moor, I would just find places for young, fully coised, guys keep him in and out keep him about and if that means fine is will langshire one of those that is actually because you know mikey moore's a little millwall rotter isn't he but i'm pretty sure isn't langshire one of those who is proper coys as in was a fan was going there with his uh dad as a kid i don't know that well you need to you need to brush up you need to brush up you can't just watch them once we know if we're keeping them or not you can't just watch them I just watched these boys greased up.

53:06Were they greased up? I think they were greased up.

53:07Jack:They looked slippery. Panning oil. Some sort of solution applied to them. Do you know when they do that, there's always a guy that's just saying, well done for every shot. I'm like, I could do that. It'd be quite a good job, wouldn't it? They'd probably pay you a few pounds, wouldn't it? Is that what Harry Brooks does? Is that what he does? He turns out and they shoot and he just says, good shot, mate. Good shot. Banger. I mean, if he does, he's doing well by it. Boom. I'm completely opposite, but I'm obsessed with, there's a TikTok account. There's Lionfish Extermination Court is the TikTok. I didn't know this.

53:44I'll give you some... Ricky will like this bit if someone who watches this bit. But there's a lionfish are really invasive in America. They're not natural to their invasive, those bits. And there's this guy that goes around spearing lionfish to take them off the coral. That's his job. and every time he gets...

54:03Jack:So do they eat the coral? Yeah, they eat all the fish. They eat all the fish. They're destroying all the fish, these lionfish. So they're invasive. So they have to go around and try and kill all these lionfish. But as he spears each one of them, he goes boom, boom, boom. And it just always reminds me of those guys that are just standing around watching people doing shooting videos, just cheering on every shot. I think there's a more crass line I can take here from people talking in the backgrounds of videos that you can find on the internet as well, which people comment on, but I'm not going to go.

54:32Jack:down that route i'll just leave i'll leave that out to everybody's imagination but there's always my point is there's always a guy off camera that just has to talk sometimes you know in in in all manner of internet videos always you know stop it just let's just watch the p let's watch the people scoring goals just watch that i don't need don't need your like you say boom all that type of thing right lovely good shot great maybe just a gentle gentle ripple of applause like a victorian Bring back the clap. Bring back the gentleman's clap. Like a cricket clap. Yeah, a little ripple. That's what they should do.

55:07Jack:Go and get a few old boys. Sounds nice on a summer's day. Go and get a few old boys on a little bench and get them to sit there and just give a few claps. Maybe a slap of the fly. The little claps, it almost sounds like bacon frying in a pan. You know, just that little sort of ripple, you know? A little crispy ripple. It's just nice, isn't it? We're done, aren't we? We're done. We're done, yeah. We're done. are you losing are you feeling the lack of dopamine from Bombas now Baker as well feels so long give him give him Aston Villa like signing Chau Gomez here we go on that good signing by the way I think I think Chau Gomez for the same price as Tillman's is some good work by them and looks like Polinia is off there too to Villa legendary Chau Polinia Emery's a smart dude mate every time you think that they're going to fall apart.

55:59He finds ways to keep them going. I do.

56:02Jack:I felt... Yeah, no, I can't. Let's not talk about Jao Pelinho. I felt quite sad that, you know, we couldn't find a home for him. Jao Gomez and Jao Pelinho. Double Jao. Filla. Do you know, the thing, I'll just end on this, the thing I did quite enjoy was seeing Manchester United fans being like, we see, we don't need Tenali. We've got Tielemans. He's so much better than Tenali. And I'm just like this, this... Why do people have to compare? But, mate, but this was us. This was us under Levy. That timeline, that exact thing, is us looking at Man United being like, look at all that money they've spent when we've managed to get Tielemans in some backdoor route from Aston Villa.

56:41Jack:It's really annoyed the Villa fans. And then they go and sign other players. You know, Tielemans is only a few months older than James Madison. You're too much younger than James Madison. Yeah. James Madison is not done. I feel like we're about to find out that Madison is not done. I think, and after this tour, I'm really hopeful that we'll be suddenly thinking, fuck it now, we've got James Madison back. Yeah. Inversely, I feel like we're on the brink of finding out that Dejan Kulusevsky is done. A notable omission from any pre-season stuff as well, which is... Yeah, yeah. But look, I don't want to do Munga.

57:16Jack:I'm not a physio. It's just sad. It's sad. Yeah. It's sad. Baker, when's above-average FPL back, Well, it won't be back next week because I'm going on holiday Saturday. But the game of FPL might be back next week. So it will be in full swing within the next couple of weeks. Very much so. Tense preseason. Well, no, you've got to wait. You've got to find out what the prices are. You've got to find out if there's any rule tweaks. So we'll come and do stuff. Give us one ITK bomber. Give us one ITK bomber of, based on last year, an unassuming... Don't give me Captain Harland. I know all that I'm basic enough to know that give me an unassuming FPL gem that somebody should be considering going into this season putting you on the spot here mate there we go Tottenham are going to be underpriced we've been so shied that Tottenham are going to be underpriced this might be a problem we're winning the league mate I'm telling you we're winning the league I'm telling you Paro should be would be in a lot of teams but it's going to be a question of whether he's back or not because of the start of the first game which I think he will be because I think we just so reliant on him.

58:27But yeah, Van Hek. If Van Hek's relatively cheap, we're going to be really interesting for a lot of people, which is very hard for people to stop at because everyone hates us. So they like it when they can't pick us. But when we become the value guys and everybody has to get Tom on their team, they're going to hate it. We will enjoy it.

58:50Jack:So everybody, listen to Above Average FPL when it comes back. Baker, or watch it as well. YouTube watch listen engage on social media platforms above average FPL on everything on everything there we go make it make much love thank you see you soon buddy

Jack is joined by Baker to digest a dramatic few days of international heartbreak and Tottenham Hotspur transfer news. We open the show with a painful autopsy of England's 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, questioning Thomas Tuchel's in-game management and whether he is to blame for the team dropping too deep after Anthony Gordon's opener.

We then switch our focus to Spurs, tackling the massive squad dilemmas facing the club regarding Cristian Romero and Djed Spence. With Luka Vuskovic officially heading to Brighton, did Romero's performance against England prove he is simply too good for the club to even consider selling? And with Spence in such incredible form on the international stage, would letting him leave this summer be a huge mistake? We also marvel at Pedro Porro's unbelievable Team of the Tournament-worthy form for Spain, reflecting on how inspired of a move it was to keep hold of him.

Finally, we look at the breaking news regarding Nottingham Forest's rejected £38m bid for Lucas Bergvall. With Spurs reportedly holding out for closer to £50m, we debate whether the club should rinse Forest for every penny or just keep hold of the talented midfielder. We wrap up by briefly touching on our forward options, highlighting Will Lankshear and Mikey Moore as exciting prospects we are desperate to see feature under Roberto De Zerbi this season.
