In short
Spurs’ early Thomas Frank era—reaction to the Bournemouth loss, debates over Brennan Johnson and squad use, and excitement about Xavi Simons’ signing; plus a deadline-day-style discussion of what Spurs still need and how squad registration rules affect transfers.
Guests
Ian (hosts Podden and Podsper; lives in Maryland, US; Spurs fan; describes himself as a vibes-focused supporter) and Ted Trunk (Rule the Roost host; Spurs pod host; discusses transfer/season outlook and fan psychology).
Key claims
Bournemouth was a “bad day,” not a crisis; Semenyo should’ve had a second yellow/penalty appeal, and Frank “got it wrong” tactically. Johnson’s value is mainly as a space-finding impact scorer; his “price tag problem” fuels criticism. Spurs’ priority is a cohesive multi-year plan, not week-to-week panic. Simons is expected to add creativity/drive, potentially drawing defenders and creating space for Son/Johnson/Kudus/Cuaduce.
Notable examples
Etihad win vs Man City; Spurs’ 17th-place finish last season; Europa League trophy and Son’s legacy; Simons’ reported “Barca captain” progression; Simons’ number 7 shirt; discussion of Premier League list A/B registration complexity.

Just like that at Lowe's. I get so many headaches every month. It could be chronic migraine, 15 or more headache days a month, each lasting four hours or more. Botox, on a botulinum toxin A, prevents headaches in adults with chronic migraine. It's not for those who have 14 or fewer headache days a month. Prescription Botox is injected by your doctor.
1:56Effects of Botox may spread hours to weeks after injection, causing serious symptoms. Allerge your doctor right away as difficulty swallowing, speaking, breathing, eye problems, or muscle weakness can be signs of a life-threatening condition. Patients with these conditions before injection are at highest risk. Side effects may include allergic reactions, neck and injection site pain, fatigue, and headache. Allergic reactions can include rash, welts, asthma symptoms, and dizziness. Don't receive Botox if there's a skin infection. Tell your doctor your medical history, muscle or nerve conditions, including ALS Lou Gehrig's disease, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, and medications, including botulinum toxins, as these may increase the risk of serious side effects.

2:40Jack:Sinesi, looking for Ever Nilsson, took it well, took it beautifully! What a stunning start for the Cherries!
2:57Jack:Hello everybody, welcome back to Rule the Ridge podcast. And I'm delighted to say, welcome for the first time to the podcast. It's Ian, Ian of Podden and Podsper. How are you doing, mate? I'm very good. I'm in a chipper mood. We're European champions. It's a beautiful sunny day here in Maryland, where I live in the US. And I suppose I've just spent a lot of money on a big signing. what's not to be happy about exactly there is plenty to be happy about and that's the energy that's the energy i want for this one because let's dive straight into bournemouth um do we have to actually no no no we're not going to dive straight into bournemouth i want to talk first of all um podden and podspur so if if anybody's not aware if you haven't listened to podden and podspot before ian has started a spurs pod about spurs pods and considering in your in your last pod well i think it was the second to last pod um you'd actually managed to find out there's 103 spurs podcasts it's gone up a couple now i think it's 107 literally in the time between recording and then it's gone up four we're like some sort of like organism just just replicating constantly you know it's um bizarre well i did i did want to say mate um i noticed like so the episode i'm talking about it was one called uh the basically the favorite what's everybody's favorite spurs podcast and uh you didn't mention roll the roost once mate um so i'm just saying you know i'm just saying in my defense you got your own episode like episode three that's true that's true and you uh you had a you had a deep a deep dive into Ted Trunk lore as well which was uh yeah quite interesting quite interesting but we'll talk about we'll talk about Pond and Podsper a bit more later but if you if you are listening to this and you haven't heard Pond and Podsper do check it out because it's actually a really it's a really novel take on things because I think you started it as a sort of joke and then you were like hang on people seem to be quite keen on the idea of this So why not?
5:03Yeah, I hung a joke out there on Blue Sky where I spend all of my time doom scrolling and dwelling. And a bunch of people said, yeah, this sounds like a good idea, yourself included. I think that was what gave me the push over the line. I'm like, oh, OK, if podcasters aren't going to be angry about this, which I was thinking they would be, maybe there's something to this.
5:23Jack:We're all egotists, rampant egotists. So if there's anybody talking about a podcaster, then, you know, they're delighted. So we're the ones talking about everything else all the time, aren't we? Finally, someone has noticed me. I've put my voice out into the ether and people have heard me. We're both chipper moods. That's good. No grand inquest. Look, my post-match pod, basically my hottest take on the whole thing is Bournemouth just did a number on us. I think, do you think that's fair? I think that some days you have a bad day at the office and that's all it is we had a good day at the office against City we had a bad day against Bournemouth let's just move on like there were things that went against us I think Semenyo should have been sent off you could make a case for a penalty before that but the ref did call a foul he did see it and he decided not to give him a second yellow and I think that changes the game in our favour but Frank just got it wrong and that happens who cares were you surprised to see that midfield notably polinia starting in the game against i was i thought you might have given bareval a go to be honest um but it shouldn't have been that bad i can see it from like uh trying to win those duels perspective and we should have we should have been a little bit better a little bit smarter a little bit more canny than we were on the day but it just the the pieces didn't fall into place i think you could also make an argument for starting odabair with that midfield but instead of johnson odabair was he was he was really good when he came on i thought it's funny it seems to be he's one of those players that's really split opinion i'm seeing kind of uh i see quite a few people kick off about odabair and i reckon the majority of it stems back to his price tag.
7:18Jack:The fact we paid quite a bit for him, 30 odd million pounds, I think it was. And we see this being equated to other deals. Well, you know, we managed to get Xavi Simmons for 50 million. So why is Odebe? But the complexities, what I found quite revealing talking to like Paul O 'Keefe, for example, is that football business is a complex one, right? It's not quite straightforward as I guess we've had it fed to us by championship or football manager, FIFA, the like, that kind of thing. This idea of gamified transfers, this is how it happens. There's a lot that goes into this stuff, right? There's a lot behind the scenes of this.
8:00Jack:I don't know if you saw Paul, he tweaked first name terms now, but Paul O 'Keefe did tweet out that the Xavi-Simmons deal is worth upwards of£100 million or something. Everyone's kicking off being like, no, it's not. You only paid 50 million euros for him. But he's got a contract that lasts for, is it a five-year contract we've got him on? Five plus two, I think. Yeah. So, I mean, the fact that people are unwilling to kind of see the entirety of a package. He's supposedly on about 200 grand a week. It's quite something. but look, I've sort of moved away from Odeber, who I thought was actually really bright when he came on.
8:45Jack:How do you solve a problem like Brennan Johnson, though, Ian? Because every time he's on the pitch, he scores pretty much. Pretty much. Or if you get him at least in the right position, he scores goals. He is one of the most ruthlessly effective players I think I've ever seen when he's given space in front of goal. However, outside of the box, in the build-up, is it harsh to say he doesn't really offer much at all? I thought he was good in places yesterday. It's just that final ball. He hasn't quite got that X factor to just put it in exactly the right spot on somebody's foot or to have that creativity or confidence to get it through.
9:32He's another guy who suffers from this price tag problem, which all comes down to in my perspective if I can roll this back a moment it's like complaining about the cost of Mars bars well back when I was a kid it used to cost 50p you know like well it doesn't anymore it doesn't matter it is what it is on the field uh but I like Brennan I think he seems like a nice guy I like you see him behind the scenes in the dressing room for the Madison documentary it seems like a lovely little chaos goblin I like him a lot and he scores goals and that's like my favorite thing in football when he doesn't score goals I just have to remember all the times he did.
10:05And I think that maybe in certain games, Frank needs to recognize when he starts and when he needs to come off the bench to be an impact sub. Because that's what he was great at. One of his amazing skills is being able to read the pace of a game pretty quickly. Like you see other players take a couple of minutes to get into it. Johnson comes on and just clicks. Like you saw that last season, coming off the bench and scoring some, I think, important goals last year too. So, or last season. so I don't know how you fix him but I think you and I can enjoy him and just you know let Frank worry about fixing him that's not a good answer
10:42Jack:but it's on the money though because ultimately he's scored a cup final winning goal for Spurs you know and I definitely dug him out quite a bit last season but since that point he's just kind of elevated to a place in my soul almost where I'm like he's fine like i'm i've got no beef with brennan johnson to be honest and if that makes me part of the problem then i'll kind of happily be there because i think he does he does offer something to the team it's just as you say it's about the way in which we we utilize him um and we were at the the other thing from this is that i was touching on post-game
11:33Jack:that's our third Premier League game under Thomas Frank we have no right to hit the ground running and we won away at the Etihad lest we forget but we have no claim on a title race this year we have no claim on even finishing in the top 4 this year we did win a cup final last year but we also finished 17th in the league. I think the main thing for me that I want from this season is to see some sort of cohesive plan, to see a team that is galvanized, that is clearly bought into what the manager is doing, and the promise of there being a kind of a roadmap to this project, if you like, that we can look three, four years down the line and see Thomas Frank still in charge and see us up there battling with whoever is at the top, if it's still Liverpool up there or if it's probably inevitably City who are hovering around the top.
12:37Jack:That's where my head is at now. I'm not sort of looking at this and looking at every single game. That's the unfun bit. When you actually turn into a good side, remember those Pete Pochettino years when every single fixture was a nervous, awful, angsty affair. We're not there. We're completely liberated from that right now. Let's just enjoy seeing this group of young players finding their fee, not only as professionals, but also within this system, under this new manager. I mean, am I part of the problem, Ian? I think there's an argument to classify all of Spurs fans as like a new psychiatric category.
13:24You know, we're all suffering this constant anxiety about no matter whether we're really good or really average. Or when we win cup finals, we can't allow ourselves to like enjoy things. It feels like weeks after winning the Europa League, I heard people running it down, saying that it was lucky, saying that we didn't, you know, we didn't play. I mean, who cares? That's not how life works. why have we got to do this to ourselves why have we got to spend our time and precious minutes on this wasteland of an earth at the moment you know trying to worry about top of the multiple we could just like enjoy the things that we do have um but that's just me i tend to look at things between like not necessarily week to week so much but more of a longer time frame so like where were we when thomas frank took over well okay cup aside we were 17th in League.
14:16We were a bit of a shambles. We didn't know what was happening. Our squad was needing work. Since then, we were inches away from winning a cup final against Paris Saint-Germain. We are now fourth in the table, fifth in the table, I think, in the Premier League after three games, which is decent. We beat Manchester City, who admittedly just lost today. Vibes are generally good. I think some people feel a release of the Posta Coglu left, for better or for worse, things are good. They're not as good as they could be. They're not perfect. We're not shellacking anybody. But I think there are things to enjoy apart from yesterday.
14:56But generally speaking, I think we're on an upward trend, and that feels nice for the time being. I mean, wasn't yesterday the first time since probably Bayern Munich that we've gone behind in a game that was somewhat competitive, right? We've always gone ahead under Frank. yeah
15:16Jack:Newcastle what was Newcastle? I don't know, I don't know what's pre-season I don't waste my time on it but I'll pull up the Bayern game when I need it to make an argument yeah of course but you can prove anything with facts can't you right? I can't remember what Newcastle was actually but no I know what you're saying. And I'm just... The thing is for me, maybe this is an age thing, right? I appreciate that I am 40 years old. And I was half that age when I'd seen Tottenham win something last. So I've almost gone another lifetime from the point that I was at. And the last time I saw Spurs win something, to win something.
16:10Jack:So for me, and it being a major thing as well, a significant thing, a Europa League, UEFA Cup, seeing that bus parade, seeing over a quarter of a million people lining the streets of Tottenham, which was something I've like fan ficked for so long. And it was every single bit as glorious as I could have ever imagined it was, seeing that happen. Seeing Sonny lift it. Like, right now, I'm just, I'm all right with Spurs. You know, I'm all right with Spurs. The fact that we have, for example, Arsenal fans who are still so rattled by our existence. the amount of them that jumped out when when we lost yesterday against Bournemouth like we just absolutely went free in their heads and and the the fact that they care that much about us at least just validates the fact that we're doing something right the fact that you know they they're now all debating frantically debating how good or not Xavi Simmons is versus you know Eberetti Eze is just like a couple of years ago, we weren't even on your radar anymore.
17:29Jack:You weren't bothered about us. And since we went and won the Europa League, which clearly has rattled that fan base to the core, it shows you that we are on the up. And I just think we need to hold on to that spirit. We need to remember we have genuinely just won a major trophy. We have just spent big money on one of Europe's most exciting young talents. And he genuinely is. I was blown away, and we will talk about him more, but I was blown away by that signing. I really was, because he was one of those players I was like, well, he's going to end up at Manchester City or Liverpool or whoever in the next few years kind of thing.
18:09Jack:But the fact he's here at Spurs, I don't think we need to. And I keep using this expression, but I don't think we need to have this inquest into us losing our third Premier League game of the season against Bournemouth. It's quite simply what it is. Iriola has a very well-coached, very well-organised set-up at Bournemouth. He has some very talented players there. They're not Bournemouth of yesteryear. This is a Bournemouth team that's been assembled by a billionaire owner again. That's kind of part of the context that people want to neglect. They have a very good squad of players. Semenyu is genuinely one of the best players in the Premier League like they're not a two-bob outfit as Frank said at the start of his tenure we are going to lose games like this is going to happen and in a way it's quite nice to sort of groove out like get the kinks out now before we get to our usual 10th game against Chelsea when they actually go and decide to piss on the party for us you know i think i think i'm preaching to the converted here right yeah i'm easy you know i'm a fan of the show so i'm just happy to be here i think you have to remember that the premier league general standard has has elevated i think there was an analysis if you looked at the top 200 players like by transfer value or football rating or i forget what it was and their distribution amongst the top six and the rest of the premier league and they're much more evenly distributed amongst all teams now.
19:40So you have better players like Antoine Semenyo on Bournemouth that maybe weren't there 20 years ago when we were celebrating a Carling Cup final, right? The distribution and money has changed in such a way that we just have to get used to days like today, which aren't necessarily like anything to worry about and are much more just normal variants. Like some days you're going to turn up and you're going to get slapped. And I think that's kind of, maybe we needed it too. we were very cock of the walk and I'd love to win every game but maybe we did just need to have be brought back down a peg and to stop some comparisons with Andrew's first 10 games I think
20:19Jack:always look on the bright side of course I mean I was fully like looking at our next four or five fixtures after City thinking we're winning all of these oh my god we're gonna win like six seven games in a row we're gonna be top of the table we're gonna Lester it and now I'm just kind of like no maybe just like maybe let's just kind of brick by brick get back there um and see kind of how this goes look i mean don't put your face through the mirror it just it's just you know it's fine it's just pumping the gas a little bit on this you know spurs uh spurs straight drain it's fine well exactly because i mean like the the reality is what did you think we were going to win the league this year because i hate to break it to you but like both arsenal and Liverpool, who were the two best teams in the league last year, have spent fortunes again this summer.
21:07Jack:It's not our time, lads. Our place in the queue is back a bit right now, but I do think we are in the queue, so let's just look ahead.
21:24Jack:Xavi Simmons, let's do it, because I don't really want to single out players, how they played yesterday and it is what it is. But I think everybody was largely okay to be honest and that's fine. But I think that even in the games where we had played well so against both Burnley and Manchester City I think pretty much unanimously the comment going around was we've done well but we clearly need some creativity in this side. We need a bit of a spark. and Javi Simmons seems to be that spark and a half, doesn't he? How delighted were you by the... I mean, are you delighted by the transfer? I guess that's the first question.
22:10He's a funny one to try to understand, because in isolation, yes, but with everything else that happened on the journey to Javi Simmons, like maybe we failed upwards from Morgan Gibbs-White, from Everett, but God, why couldn't this have happened two months ago? you know i think like that's in the pit of my stomach is is why why couldn't we get this done but he seems like a player um i don't know too much about him because very often those champions games or european league games or whatever he's playing in uh midweek here in the u.s where i live so i don't tune in and see them so he's been kind of this compilation guy for me for a while this person who shows up in fifa and i think about signing him you know but he looks like a baby so I skip over it.
22:55His highlight reel is impressive, and it looks like just what we need, another player to drive the ball forward to commit guys. And I think I'm really excited by having another star in the team. I think a lot of people misunderstand the impact that Sonny has or had last season. He was still productive, still a good player. But I think his star power and ability to draw people to him to create space or really complement what Caduce is doing and maybe give him some space to work. Like yesterday we saw against Bournemouth, he had people on him. And I'm hoping that having Simmons in that team to either find him in spaces where other players on our team can't is going to be a positive, or the fact that he can just draw and create space for Caduce or Johnson or somebody else to be more effective.
23:46That's exciting. I heard in your interview with Kish from Lady White Lab, he described him as an Instagram player. And as I'm an old man, I'm also 40. I had no idea what that means. Is this because he was a young star? I don't I didn't quite get that.

You know how every now and again you'll see Twitter will be like this lad in the Leicester Academy looking at this amazing goal he scored? Or this other young Argentinian player, is he the next Messi kind of thing? So I think Sherry Simmons has always been one of those type of players where he's literally just had his rise documented. I was interested, I did find it interesting as well. I don't think it was when I spoke to Kish, but when he did Flav's pod, the lab afterwards as well, he mentioned that Xavi Simmonds has actually been like the Barca captain at most stages along his progression up through La Masia, through the different age groups, which I actually think shone through in his interviews.
27:06Jack:I was quite shocked for a 22-year-old guy. He spoke with like masses of maturity, you know? Like he seemed really kind of like, and maybe this is just my own ignorance, my own sort of, you know, I don't know, low standards I set for young people. I don't know. Like it's just, it's, he just, he seems like a really sort of switched on guy, really focused um i do feel like he is keen on the spurs project i do feel like he he fancies i don't just think it's this kind of oh well chelsea wouldn't sign me so might as well go to spurs like from from what i understand like you know he's had extensive conversations with thomas frank about how he how he will be utilized in the team how he sees his relationships forming with other players on the pitch within the squad, so on and so forth.
27:59Jack:So I just think there's a lot to take from a young player who obviously has a star factor, like you say. There is a star value to him, and that's demonstrated from the amount of fans of other fan bases who are either trying to play down the deal, if they're Arsenal fans pretty much, or a lot of Liverpool fans. A lot of Liverpool and Manchester United fans are saying, Spurs have got a good one there. Spurs have done good business there. But the pessimist in my brain says, are they setting us up for a fall?
28:39They're getting ready to be like,
28:41Jack:they thought they were going to be something. Yeah. I can't enjoy anything. This comes back to the Spurs fan thing. But were you at all? did it get you a little bit seeing him get the number 7 shirt not because it's him but I just mean because of who has vacated said shirt I don't think letting that sit unused for a period of time does anybody any favours because if Xavi doesn't get it this season somebody gets it next season or the season after and then you've got to live up to it you know it's been sat unused it's been protected this way we've just accepted this is like a functional component of the team it's going to the player who already wears it.

29:24Like, that number has mystique from it being worn by Sonny. Aaron Lennon, right? It was before Sonny? Yeah. I don't mind. I love the number. I think the number seven has a huge cultural impact in football, largely thanks to, sadly, Manchester United players. Like David Beckham, right? Eric Cantona. I'm happy that it's getting used, and I'm happy that he has the confidence to take it. 22-year-old coming in and saying, I'm the man, I'm going to be taking this on. I like to see it.
29:57Jack:I think what dawned on me, obviously the impact of Son Heung-min on Tottenham Hotspur, his legacy here isn't something that's new to me. But it's just quite funny in my lifetime to have a player that was so significant for us. A captain of the team that's won a European and trophy in the circumstances that we did the fact that we are we are talking to like our new superstar signing about the fact he is taking that shirt on and the fact that you know Javi Simmons is like knows full well who Son Hyun Min is like we've had these moments in the past dare I say even like a couple of seasons ago when we brought in Van Der Ven and we were asking him questions about Van Der Vaart he was sort of a bit like you know yeah, great, awesome.
30:50Names are kind of similar, that's it.
30:51Jack:Yeah, exactly, we're both much. There's quite a few of us, you know? But do you know what I mean? It felt like we were kind of trying to force something, but Sonny is one of those players that is, not only his significance to the club, but his significance in football at large dictates that it's like it's a noteworthy point of discussion, right? That you are taking this legendary player's shirt. But can you fill his boots? And, you know, like you say, for a young lad to sort of back himself, to step into that. And like I say, I don't think it came across in like an arrogant kind of way. He feels like a young guy who, you know, like Hish was saying, you know, this is a guy who is prepared to work hard.
31:38Jack:He wants to rise to the top and he's not just going to sit on PSG's bench. He doesn't want to do that. He wants to be playing football. He wants to be up there in the mix, showing people what he can do. And what excites me is that I think the circumstances that present themselves here at Tottenham mean that a player can... Look at the careers. Like, we talk about us being this sort of two-Bob Spurs-y club and, you know, we always kind of... People make fun of us about losing our best players and stuff, But look where we lose our blessed players too. We lose them to Real Madrid, Bayern Munich. You know, like this is, we've had some incredible players here.
32:24Jack:Like it's a great opportunity. We're just such a uniquely sort of positioned club in that, yes, there's pressure. Yes, there's expectation here. But for the most part, we want to love the players that we sign. We're not sat there like Manchester United fans who, for the most part, are scrutinising these players. can you take us back to the promised land can you take us back to the ferguson era if not get out and we're going to hate you sort of thing as far as it's back to the brennan johnson problem that we want to love him we don't want to we don't want to jettison him we want to fix him we want him to be productive in the team we want him to be able to uh absorb all of the love we need to need to throw at him for that goal in you know san san memes or whatever i'm butchering pronunciations there amazing stuff um i think that coming back to sunny as a shirt holder and legend of the club reminds me of what ang was telling the players before the europa league final which was you know you are going to be the only people up on this wall in color pictures holding a trophy talking about i think it was at the stadium or at the training ground it was somewhere and i think that's obviously in the mind of javi simmons coming in that he has this actual tangible real life person that he's seen since he was a child who's he's must have been watching because sonny is a global superstar that he what you know won the the push goes award i that must be a huge motivating factor for him to go on and be like a proud owner of that shirt i'm excited to see what he can do i'm just interested to uh on sonny what's the because you are in the states obviously what's what's the the wider sort of cut through culturally been like from from the signing of of of sons by lafc are you seeing it be something that's spoke yeah for example in the workplace it's like oh ian you're the you're the soccer guy who's this guy is he good like has it has it made wider wider sort of news out there i'm in the privileged position to have been surrounded myself entirely with Spurs fans.
34:36So for me, it's just been an excitement about when he might next come to the East Coast from LA for us to be able to go and watch a game. Who would he be? What would be the nearest team? So we're just outside Washington, DC. So DC United would be the game. If we could get that, that would be pretty good. But Philadelphia would also work, I think, for my supporters club that I run. That would be exciting to go and watch him and maybe harass LAFC to see if we can get some face time with him. Anyway, I'm dreaming. It's what we do. It's been huge. It's been to see soccer players in the newspapers in something more than a curiosity or a niche pursuit has been pretty exciting.
35:20I have a lot of friends who are Korean by birth or through family, and so many of them were brought to our club by Sonny but have now stuck around and have fallen in love with us for what we are. He really is an amazing, amazing person. I wish I had something more important to say, but yeah, all my workplaces are surrounded by people who couldn't give two shits about football.
35:47Jack:I mean, that's kind of powerful. Same as NFL over here, right? Like it's growing in the UK, but it's still something of a niche sport, really. which I have no interest in the NFL, for example. It doesn't register for me at all. But I appreciate that it is a very popular kind of spot. But I wouldn't be able to tell you. Honestly, I wouldn't be able to tell you anything about it. I wouldn't be able to say who the best player is, who the best team is, nothing. It just doesn't register to me. I try. I can't get into it. I just can't do it. I don't know what it is. I love football too much. Well, yeah, I had that fleeting thought.
36:36Jack:When we have the NFL pitch and all that type of stuff at Spurs, I was like, maybe now's the time to get into it. We'll end up with a UK franchise at some point, and they'll be based at the Spurs ground, and maybe I should try and get into it. I've watched a couple of explainer videos and stuff, and I was just like, you know. I don't even like rugby like I'm not gonna you know I don't know why I'm gonna have interest in like you know this sort of rugby adjacent game which I'm sorry Americans I'm sorry to any Americans this thing but you know it's a different stadium experience too I went to see a Baltimore Ravens game with my brother-in-law probably five years ago and it's just such a weird experience compared to being at White Hart Lane where there's an ebb and flow with the game versus this very contrived, controlled and you see this in baseball stadia too there's a very controlled crowd reaction, like definitely silent while your team has got the ball but just a horrendous wall of droning noise to put the other team off when they're attacking it's odd, anyway I'm gonna, yeah, I probably shouldn't be as if you are a new American listener, if you have followed in here I'm not going to be gunning NFL every week and I'm not going to be comparing it to rugby.
37:55I appreciate there's a strong American sporting culture
37:59Jack:and I'm not one of those British people here to turn my nose up at that. I'm just saying it's quite simply not for me. They're all terrible. Stop. They're not a patch on the brain. There you go. You're going to be driven into the sea, Ian. Yeah, come fight me. It's deadline day today, mate. It's deadline day. And, you know, I would be more worried about things moving quickly. Did we not support Tottenham Hotspur Football Club? But unless something has changed in the time since we've recorded this, thus far it looks like we are still looking at, as rumour has it, our centre-back and our left winger.
38:42Jack:Do you see those as priority positions for Spurs? Do you see us signing more players as a priority? please discuss our window oh our window we've done some good business that's how getting Paul in urine was a godsend and as John Bass said on the fighting card it's one in the eye of the laptop hurts
39:08I would like to see another centre midfielder I know we're linked with Kobi Maynou which would be terrific but I can't see that happening unless we get somebody out the door and I would like to see another left winger in but I'm confused about our squad composition because we brought Tell in you know who ostensibly plays on the left a little bit of centre forward, we've got Odebe who seems to play on the left, we've got Johnson who we're playing on the left and we're now looking at potentially if the planets align Savinho so why did we sign Tell if we're now going to go after another left winger what message does that send to a player that we put big investment into but you know I like shiny new toys so if you can bring me a superstar left winger I'll bite your hand off and be happy about it I would like to see a center midfielder and I was confused by the Okanji rumors from Man City like the center back rumors because you look at us and you say well we've got Davies and we've got Takai God I hope it's Takai you know we've got Romero we've got Van de Ven and Dragershin's coming back in a couple months surely we can make it through and where do they go?
40:26our Premier League registration is a mess from my understanding which is limited because I'm stupid but from what I hear from smarter people than I these players haven't got anywhere to go in the squad so I don't know
40:39Jack:I really want to be able to understand So Billy Mac, Mac-Coyes on Blue Sky, was trying to get through my thick skull how the homegrown, club-trained... So what is it? So you've got... Is club-trained association trained, isn't it? Something like that? Or is that homegrown? Is that the same thing? This is blind leading the blind. I have no idea. so he said the number of hours I spend watching Tottenham Hotspur a week you think I'd understand things a bit more than I feel good or bad watching the team but that's where I'm at I'm 40 years old I know what I'm all about just I just enjoy what I enjoy and and let somebody else tell me what to think about more important stuff so what look Billy Mack said to me like so don't worry about the Premier League rules will be fine there.
41:38Jack:For the Champions League, you have to have 25 slots for list A players and unlimited list B. List B are under 21 and have been at the club for more than two years. The only really relevant one we have is Moore, but obviously he's now on loan at Rangers. But players like Ajay would have been as well. Our issue is list A. list A divides into three different pillars non-association trained, association trained and club trained you get 17 non-association trained slots and 4 association trained slots and 4 club trained slots any players over the 4 association trained slots take away from the 17 non-association trained slots so basically so for Spurs we have loads of association trained players Madison, Brendan Johnson, Spence, Davis so we're over that club trained players are those who have been at Spurs for three years before the age of 21 so our weird spot is that like for example Bergvall and Gray count against that that essentially 21 player total but next season they would be club trained And I just, I don't get it, mate.
43:01It's like explaining magic to dogs, you know, when you see those videos of things disappearing. As you were explaining it, it was going into my brain and it just was not doing anything. It wasn't even bouncing off the walls of my skull. I'm sorry. I'm sorry to your listeners too.
43:17Jack:I think about how often I do think, you know, the old clip that does the rounds that's been sort of memefied now of, is it Richard? It's David Attenborough, isn't it? David Attenborough, I always get the two of them mixed up, Richard and David, sorry. Same difference. David Attenborough watching the orangutan sawing the piece of wood, and it's like, you know, my boss watching me doing DIY. Just go like, this is me. Whenever I try and talk about tactics, whenever I get rattled by somebody commenting on YouTube being like, you need to make more of an effort to talk about tactics. I'm like, all right, I'll read some FB ref, and I'll pay more attention to what Windy and Nathan are saying, and I'll try and do some of that.
43:56Jack:I'm like, I just know. I'm just the vibes, man. That's what I do. I enjoyed Nathan A. Clark's video yesterday that came out of him with a little tactics board with the markers on it and him explaining like he was to a five-year-old what was happening. Did you feel personally seen? Yes. Especially because I still didn't understand. I'm like, why did Bulldog go in there? Why Ian feel sad? Yeah, I don't get it. but I think we need to sign players. I don't know. Why didn't we sign Carl Walker Peters again? I don't know. Like he probably would have been all right for us again. And he would have been something trained, I guess.

It could be chronic migraine, 15 or more headache days a month, each lasting four hours or more.
45:17Botox, on a botulinum toxin A, prevents headaches in adults with chronic migraine. It's not for those who have 14 or fewer headache days a month. Prescription Botox is injected by your doctor. Effects of Botox may spread hours to weeks after injection, causing serious symptoms.
45:44Allergic reactions can include rash, welts, asthma symptoms, and dizziness. 47:07Jack:It's the sort of thing you do find in shopping centres. It's not in any way, shape or form an authentic restaurant. I did just live in Whitechapel and spent too much time at the Yo Sushi and Westfield shopping centre, so maybe I shouldn't complain. Yeah. Ademaila Luchman is somebody that we are apparently looking at quite a lot, but so are Bayern Munich now. They're apparently sneaking in. I mean, I'm I'm guessing he would probably count as something. I'm going to stop talking about that part. Is he a good player? That's what we should be focusing on. I think he's decent. Just find good players and let everything else fall into place.
47:50Jack:He did really well for Atalanta, didn't they? They won the Europa League a couple of years ago, didn't they? And I think he was pretty good in that. So, you know, let's do it, shall we? So I'm assuming, yeah, let's just sign all of them. I'm assuming Bayern are after him because the Nicholas Jackson deal is falling apart Has that happened now? What's going on with that? Blue Sky is terrible for rumours This is where I get 99 % of my rumours now But I thought so because of Liam DeLapp's injury Chelsea are not willing to part ways with Jackson maybe I don't know Maybe Jackson is the Harry Kane in place for Bayern?
48:27Sorry
48:29Jack:It feels like the only real significant thing that is going to happen is maybe Isak going and you would imagine that he will do but Harvey Elliott is somebody that people are still sniffing around and I wonder if we will be or if we will have now bin that off because we've got a much better version of Harvey Elliott in Xavi Simmons right? Yeah I don't think that's happening. How would you feel about him coming in after the small drama that he had with Kane many moons ago. Yeah, I know. I mean, like, on a certain, like, if I'm being brutally honest, on a pathetic, and I appreciate it's quite pathetic, but on a pathetic level, I wouldn't fancy him.
49:16Jack:I don't get, I don't, I don't think he's got a good aura, mate. I don't get positive vibes from Harvey Elliott, if I'm brutally honest with you. But, I think he is a very talented young player. and I don't know it all depends on how we look I understand that the discussion at the moment is we don't have a starting 11 we have a squad and yeah I get all that but still you do have a best 11 like you do and that that will that will always be the case in football that will that will always be the case you will always have a preferred 11 that you hope is fit and you can take into a cup final or a significant match, right?
50:01Jack:That will always be the case. I guess what I'm toiling with at the moment is where do we see Xavi Simmonds playing? Because from what I understand, they played him out on the left quite a bit in Leipzig, even though he can play as a number 10. And I think he prefers to play as a number 10. Obviously, within most modern footballing systems, players in the final third are required to be quite fluid and to move around and
50:35Jack:be a variety of different outlets. A striker isn't just a striker anymore. Richarlison is dropping back. Harry Kane is dropping back and playing deep and whatever. But I'm just wondering if Xavi Simmonds is somebody that we will move out left, perhaps because we've seen how well Saar has played in a more advanced role within this system and whether or not that means we do still you know keep an eye out for somebody like Harvey Elliott. Kobe Maynard as well is like I think you mentioned him earlier is someone that we have been apparently looking for but I would be very shocked if we ended up with him because he's a Man United fan isn't he?
51:19Jack:I think he wants to stay at United. I think he only wants to go out on loan because Amarim doesn't fancy him um I just don't really know mate and I don't I I couldn't I honestly couldn't tell you exactly what I would want to see Spurs sign this window like I mean a footballer obviously but what type of player I would want us to sign if I'm being brutally honest with you I mean do you feel like there is a glaring hole anywhere within the squad yeah I think a passing player who can play in that sort of six role would be useful in certain games to play free presses rather than trying to go over the top i'm going to delight some of your fans who've been asking for uh or some of your listeners who've been asking for a more tactical analysis or i'm going to piss them off one of the two yeah i think somebody who can play through the lines would be nice uh i do know that xavi simmons played more as like a wide number 10 like james madison likes to do like drifting left.
52:17So I don't know if he's an out-and-out left, like he can play out-and-out as like a left winger like Johnson did yesterday, or if he's more of a number 10 in the middle. Because I think he played a 4-2-2-2. Do those numbers add up to 10? Sure. Yeah, so, you know, who cares?
52:36Maybe that's what we've been missing a trick. We need to be putting out 13 players. Anyway. So yeah, I don't know if there are any glaring holes but that's because I'm a tactical idiot and I just like winning games so we sign all the players I do think a left winger would be helpful like a superstar left winger but that's because I think you should sign superstars whenever you can and by superstar I mean one of those players who's coming in with aura who's coming in and is going to scare the other team is going to be able to win you matches on their own I am mindful that we do have Kulusevsky coming back he can't play on the left but maybe that frees up some rotation options I don't know I would like to see Sarr play as the 8 more than the 10, I think that his creativity that he's shown and bringing players into the game in these first two games was incredibly helpful and he's got an eye for goal but he does look like he would be a fantastic box-to-box number 8 playing alongside Paulina in big games, I think that would be exciting
53:39Jack:I'm really looking forward to seeing Kalisovsky link up with Kudus you know I've got to say I'm sort of it kind of he gets forgotten about a bit Kulisevsky by our own fans as much as by anyone else really but he is such a I don't know he's a ludicrously good player if he can if he can find that form again because there were genuinely points when we've been watching him and I thought Christ he is going to be our franchise player and in a few years time like he's he's unbelievable he's been quite unfortunate of injuries and he's been unfortunate in the respect that we keep going through different managerial appointments styles setups systems um I think he's always tried his hardest to make it work but I just I just wonder if like Frank in particular will will crack that one because I think I think the the biggest thing going against him is I don't think we could honestly say hand on heart we know what Kulisevsky's best position is yet really and maybe he'll find that and develop under Thomas Frank a new clearly defined kind of identity or position in a footballing sense but I'm really looking forward to him coming back and I don't know like I said the thing is mate I just keep defaulting back to we just won a a massive trophy we've actually just signed xavi simmons which is really exciting we've got loads of really exciting young players coming up and i know i i do get that i do get the kind of the consternation that we need to sign more ready-made players and it's something i feel and something i definitely agree with um but i just i feel i just feel like we're on we're on a good path right now I feel like we're on a good path and I just kind of want to see us develop and just grow and keep going down that without too much noise and without too much aggro.
55:41Jack:So please carry on doing that, I suppose. And I thought that it would be good for us to talk about now towards the end because I think, look, we're going into an international break. People will want content. People will want to listen to the thoughts of other Spurs fans in these kind of moments when there aren't as many games to talk about. And what better person to talk to about the thoughts of other Spurs fans than you really with Podden and Podspur. Tell us a bit more about Podden and Podspur. Obviously, we spoke about it at the very beginning. It's a pod about Spurs pods. But I guess give us the elevator pitch.
56:23Jack:Tell us where you're at and how it's going so far. Out there, you've got podcasts about Tottenham through a perspective about their, not their financials, but their operations from their tactical analysis. I feel like I come at it from more of a fan perspective and how the fans feel. So game-by-game results, I talk about very little, but I try to talk about how fans feel and what fans are focusing on over long periods of time. I don't know if that's a good explanation of what I'm trying to do, but I'm trying to turn the mirror around on Spurs and look back at ourselves and see what ugly faces revealed.
57:03We're an interesting fan base. There's always something happening. There's always something that we're happy about, elated about. I think there are many more passionate fans than Tottenham fans. And as you said earlier, we have something like 107, 108. Probably by now in the hour that we've been recording, we're up to 110 podcasts. And all of them are saying very different things from very different worldviews. And I very much enjoy listening to different people argue about Tottenham and come together. And I try to synthesize that worldview like a really shitty large language model that you can listen to in a podcast whenever I feel like making a show.
57:45It's been a couple of weeks. I've found this summer overwhelming, if I'm honest. I keep telling myself I'll record it after Eze signs or after Morgan Gibbs White signs and then it doesn't happen and I'm like, oh, what do I do now? Anyway. So yeah, it's a Spurs podcast about Spurs fans and how they talk on podcasts. Broadly speaking, probably internet culture more widely, I think, is something that I'd like to get into. I feel like there's a little bit more meat on that bone. But yeah, we just try to, whether it be do deep dives into shows like I did on Roll the Roost talking about your long and storied history.
58:23It's like talking to Spurs Internet royalty right now. I'll take that, mate.
58:29Jack:My ego thanks you. Yeah, I try my best. I know what's good for me. Or looking at I think I got a lot of really good responses to my pre-Man United Europa League final video where I compared how we were talking about the final to how Man United fans were talking about the final. And from that, you could hear very clearly that we were super interested in winning a trophy, in the glory, and all they talked about was how they deserved it and how the money in the Champions League was all that mattered. So if you want to learn a little bit more about podcasts, maybe find a pod that you've never heard of before and that you enjoy, check out FODNUM.
59:11I do my best, and I'm just a guy, an idiot with a microphone, who listens to dozens of Spurs podcasts every week. to the detriment of my health, my mental health, my family, my work, and everything else for the hundreds of listeners that I get.
59:27Jack:It's the funny thing though, isn't it? Because there are, I listen to loads of them. And I will sort of tap in and out of different ones as well at different points. And I think that what you managed to capture really well is the essence that there are many different voices talking about what is essentially the same thing, the same few talking points. Every single one of those hundred and something Spurs podcasts will be saying what they felt about the Bournemouth game, what they feel about the Xavi Simmons signing, and what they feel about the transfer window. That's pretty much three talking points that will be covered 107 different times in a whole plethora of different ways, all coming at it from different perspectives.
1:00:09Jack:and obviously sometimes you will be more asked than other times to listen to things from a i i don't know and i i can't i can't quite fully like land in my head why some games i want to hear a particular person's take on something that's happening but i definitely know that's something that i have is that the same for you do you get where i'm going very much so because i've been listening so much now i do know after a win who i want to go listen to who I want to go listen to if we lose. And not just from a, I've got to make content perspective, but for my own enjoyment or understanding of the game.
1:00:50And surprisingly so. I think that's what people forget. They listen to one podcast and they say, I don't like podcasts because I don't like this guy. But they're all talking to different audiences who want different things. You know, fans of your show are going to be completely different to fans of another show. and just because you don't like how one person packages and presents their ideas around Spurs doesn't mean that you're not going to find something else out there and it's been enjoyable it's been really enjoyable I hope that people get something out of it I do like coming to your pods after a win like your match day reactions I'll try to look out for that maybe not so much for the losses but that's like a me in content kind of a thing I did listen yesterday So, phew, saves that one.
1:01:42No.
1:01:43Jack:That's a good thing. I mean, I'm just interested to know how you – how do you approach, like, the creation of each episode? Do you think, okay, these are the pods I'm going to listen to this week and that's how I'm going to cover the week in Spurs? Or how do you do it? It depends on the week. but most of the on an average week where I just want to talk about how we are processing and explaining what we see and feel on the pitch I will sit down at my desk put my headphones in and get out a black notebook and start listening to pods and start making notes and usually after one or two podcasts a couple ideas start to bubble up I don't normally go in with something in mind I think once or twice I've gone in saying, okay, I want to listen to how they talk about angiopostococle.
1:02:36I've done that once or twice, but usually it's listening to what people are saying instead of trying to editorialize too much. I will end up cherry picking a little bit. And usually those themes that are coming out of later pods and possibly missing because I've already sort of started listening with the intent of scripting something based upon some themes from pods that get stuff out early on a Monday. So that's how I approach it. I have a lot of stuff that ends up on the cutting room floor, essentially, just because it doesn't quite fit, or I forget to include it, or it's just lost in bad handwriting.
1:03:15So that's how I do it. And usually I'm trying to shift now from a weekly review perspective to more of a monthly pulse check with maybe interviews or more focused things in between to give myself more time to build up a narrative as opposed to cherry picking you know something comes out on a monday and then i've got a record by the next what thursday or something like i'm just trying to think about time lunch here when it becomes worthwhile for me to put out a podcast because unlike like for yourself for example you put out a pod and you're kind of out of date by the next game i suffer from the same perspective but i have a lag of two or three days because i've got to listen to all you lovely people put your opinions out there first before i form mine and think about what i want to say so there's there's there's quite a bit of project management involved and that's what i'm going to
1:04:11Jack:pop my cv when i talk about it because i don't want to be too much of like a sniffy pseudo intellectual about it but i think the thing that's quite interesting about the pod in particular is that what sort of started as in a way a bit of a joke um as and i don't mean that as in like a reflection on the work you're doing i mean as in the actual the kind of the the idea behind it um has kind of come into like a an almost like adam curtis-ish look at humans and the way we talk about the way that so many people can talk about the same thing and our own experiences our own lives our own lenses on things shape the way that we can all talk about an objective truth in in a plethora of different ways I don't it's just it is it is very interesting um and do you find that it does it bring you closer to Spurs do you think it brings you does it make you feel closer to Spurs and Spurs fans or does it take does it does it give you a sense of division from them because you're almost I don't know looking at them in a Petri dish oh yes my scientist training coming through I think so because I feel like I'm more connected to fans whose voices I'm not hearing and opinions that I'm not hearing like my group of friends that I have tend to have a bit of an echo chamber as you might expect you know we're all pretty much online fans because we live overseas i have my family my older brother and my dad but if i talk to them about spurs i drive them and myself insane so it's just nobody comes out of those conversations alive so it's nice to hear people who have very very different perspectives on both the world and also spurs and i feel like it's brought me closer to them than anything else a much deeper appreciation like I'll start listening to a podcast and I think I'm not gonna like this guy I don't like how he's presenting this I don't like you know invariably it's a guy too I don't like I don't like how they're talking I don't like this and then if I listen for you know another seven hours then I'll start to think she's got a point there and my opinion will start to change and I'll start to appreciate more of what they're thinking and feeling and their perspectives and their you know lived experience so I've enjoyed that I think it's brought me closer to those types of those fans um yeah it's been it's been a trip i've i've enjoyed it i'm glad i put out a shit post on blue sky not not what six months ago and i uh i i think i got lucky there's something about the idea of it just it's stuck in my brain like i come at i come at life in general from very much like a diy punk perspective you know just make it if you've got an idea for something just make it and see if people love it.
1:07:03And if they don't - I'm with you 100 % on that, mate.
1:07:05Jack:Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, nobody's going to die if you make a podcast about podcasts, hopefully. Or maybe. You never know. That's what COVID was to me, SpursWipe. I was like, I should just do something stupid. It'll cheer people up. This will be fun. I can use the sort of skills I have. I've got a mobile phone that can film all right. I'll just write this thing because I used to really like it when Charlie Brooker used to do the news wipes. I can do a SpursWipe. and yeah I did have that moment before I published it where I was like oh my god is this going to be is this going to be the next thing that other people are like look at this Spurs fan did this cringe thing but people quite liked it and that was nice and it was a really fun thing to work on but I'm 100 % with you mate just dive in if you feel if you if you kind of get that that inspiration that creative thread that comes into you just follow it just just pull on it just tug it you That sounds a bit dodgy, but you know what I'm saying.
1:08:00Jack:Just follow that thread. Do it because, like you say, what's the harm going to be? You too could be sitting in six months' time, chin-scratching, like me and Ian here, discussing Tottenham Hotspur Football Club on a video call. But Ian, mate, it's been an absolute pleasure talking to you today. I really appreciate you making the time to come and talk to me. And if people weren't aware, where can they find you? Where can they find Podden and Podspur? And if there are any other podcasters listening to this who want to talk to you about Podden and Podspur, how can they do that? Oh, well, thank you for having me on.
1:08:47You can find me dwelling and annoying people on bluesky at ian.coys.social. Podman Podspur is only on there because I'm bad at the internet despite how much time I spend on the internet it's at podmanpodspur.bsky.social you can search for Podman Podspur on pretty much all podcasts places now, YouTube, Amazon Spotify, Apple Pocket Casts your local library I don't know where it ends up now you put the RSS feed out there and you just hope it goes to as many ear holes as it can or you can email me at pod and podspur at gmail.com if you want to harass me and fill it full of Arsenal spam or something.
1:09:31Mate, much love. Come on, you Spurs. Yes, come on, you Spurs.

From the publisher
Jack is joined by Iain from Poddenham Podspur to make sense of Tottenham’s first Premier League defeat under new boss Thomas Frank. Did the manager get it wrong? Maybe so, but with Spurs still at the very beginning of this journey and basking in the glow of a European trophy, there’s little reason for panic.
The conversation turns to new arrival Xavi Simons, what makes him such an exciting signing, and how his interviews reveal a mature young player ready to carry on the legacy of Son Heung-min’s number 7 shirt. Jack and Iain also look ahead to transfer deadline day. Who Spurs need, who they’d like to see, and what it all means for the season ahead.
Finally, Iain talks about his own project, Poddenham Podspur – a podcast about Spurs podcasts. What began as a tongue-in-cheek idea has grown into something far more meaningful.
The show's theme is Ghost Cat by Gillen.
