In short
Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League final “greatest night,” covering the week leading up to the match, the trophy parade, and the emotional/mental factors behind winning after a 17-year European trophy drought.
Guests
Rob Daly and Ben Haines, both long-time Spurs media staff (Rob as a commentator; Ben in Spurs TV/social/content roles).
Guest backgrounds
They describe traveling with Spurs staff, doing match-day commentary/interview prep, and working closely with club leadership and players during major events.
Key claims
Spurs’ preparation and messaging were built around winning, not “making up the numbers.” Ange Postecoglou’s “win something in my second season” prophecy and his emotional connection with the squad helped belief. Christian Romero’s leadership and competitive “captain” role helped shift mentality toward winning.
Notable examples
Ben’s “we’re going to win” moments in the hotel lobby and at the fan park; the charter flight with legends (including Graham Roberts, Sandro, and AJ Tracy); Spurs walking through the stadium with editorial staff; the final’s key moments (Mickey van de Ven clearance off the line, the goal, and a late save) and Rob’s famous line “Timo time… boost gumps.”

1:57hello everybody welcome back to rule the roost podcast it's an international break and as i was saying to windy the other day it's let's put the tape on and let's just enjoy ourselves you know we don't need to dive into the minutiae of expected goals and big chances created so let's Let's hit everyone in the warm and fuzzies, shall we? Mr Rob Daly and Ben Haynes. How are you doing, Eds? Good. Very good, Jack. Glad we could do this at last. And, yeah, nice to have. I've just had a bit of time off for the international break, normally doing a couple of games, but at a week away. So feeling refreshed and ready to talk.
2:35Tottenham Hotspur. Such a wind-up merchant as well. You invited Windy onto your pod and then went, let's not talk about expected goals or any of that stuff. Just literally sticking it to him after 20 seconds. What a jerk. Unbelievable. He's stepping into the bandit down here, mate. You're on my patch, yeah. You're telling that nonsense around there. 4-4-F in two. Proper football here. Proper football. I actually got Wendy talking about hoofing the ball into the box. Come on. I love it. That's what you get on Roller Roost, mate. That's what you get. Brilliant. Brilliant. Ben, it's not been a, like, I think, you know, you're talking about people gloating there.
3:17Rob, you know, talking about going on holiday and enjoying himself football-free. It's not been football-free for you, has it, this international break? No, I did a little bit of Women's Champions League. That was very, very exciting. Yeah, that was wicked, man. I've had a good couple of months doing lots of different things, but that was pretty cool. I was doing my first Champions League game, which was Juventus against Benfica in Turin which was like a wild experience that whole thing of I mean we'll get onto this later on obviously but with like the whole thing of flying to a game like it's one thing I mean it's always fun whenever you do it when you do it as a fan you know you get that feeling of like you know you're only there for 24 hours in and out football is at the heart of everything you do but you try and get a bit of food you try and go somewhere for a few beers and stuff it's just the most exciting thing and then getting to be the one shouting out the stuff before the game is really really good fun so um that is wicked and then I got a couple of days in Spain afterwards and I thought like basically when I'm sure that I know you know this all too well Jack but Rob's exactly the same as me when your life is so incredibly dictated by the football calendar you start to do this thing where you look at the international breaks.
4:35It's like this little oasis on the horizon where you're like, okay, there's no football there. And if I can just fold in this bit of work here and if I can just shut down this thing over here, there's a window of opportunity where I can get like three days or four days where maybe you can kind of like switch off for a second. So I arranged to go away with a couple of my mates to Spain. and we went to this place called Mercia, which is like gorgeous. Old like Roman town, isn't it? Stunning. What's it got? Like aqueducts, doesn't it? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Very nice. Is it an aqueduct? Is that what you call it?
5:17I don't know. I think so. Let's go with it. They had the worst thunderstorms and torrential rain that they've had for nearly 10 years. There was flash flooding. there was like red weather warnings had to shut down all of the restaurants so we just sat really tragically in a hotel bar for three days but it was great fun, like really really good fun That's nice isn't it Yeah Got back home, got off the plane and it was like stunning blue skies I got in and the missus was like God it's been lovely here, I'm like enough enough I don't want to hear it Let's say, you know I was talking about like warm and fuzzies I think the best the best place to start because there's a lot there's a lot to be talking about with like Thomas Frank and everything I'm sure people will be very keen to hear what it's like working with him but I couldn't start a pod like off of you two without first talking about like the Europa League final the trophy parade all of that because you know you've you've both been working at Spurs for quite some time now um you've seen a few highs You've seen a few lows, but nothing quite on that level.
6:30You know, Spurs breaking our 17-year trophy drought. Sonny, the legendary captain, finally getting something over the line, that Hollywood ending. How was it being, like, a part of that? Because you were, look, you are both. I know you're both modest guys, but you're a big part of the identity of Spurs now. you are, and you were firmly a part of everything that took place. How was it? I can imagine it was one of those things that I know people will always say, when you work in football, it's not quite the same as following it as a fan. But I would imagine that was one of those situations where it was just as euphoric.
7:12Maybe on a different level, but just, no, I'm not going to sell it for you. Please tell us. No, it was, wasn't it, Rob? It was extraordinary, yeah. It was a crazy five days. And I would include Brighton going right through to that game. It was an amazing experience. I mean, if we're going to go chronologically through it, it probably should start with Ben because Ben was there on the Monday. I didn't fly to the Wednesday actual day of the game on the day of the game. So maybe best to get started with Ben. A little bit of a story here before we properly get stuck in. but basically when we got it's always best i think with these things always best to kind of just have a little chat with the people at the club and just say listen we're going to do a podcast and we're like going to be talking about these things and just make sure everyone says like yeah happy for you to go and and do that and when i did that the other day i remembered that basically in the wake of like that once the once the kind of week had been sort of over and was done and had a tiny bit a downtime i basically recorded a podcast to myself of everything that had happened over the course of that seven days just because i was like i don't want to forget any of this let's play it and so get comfortable here comes three hours but i just basically i went on a walk for like an hour and a bit and i just recorded everything that i could possibly think of and when we got the all-clear to do this i listened to it back and like honestly there were so many things that i'd already forgotten just little things that i already kind of like somehow to escape my memory and like you often hear um you always hear i think you've said it a few times yet actually when we're doing byob stuff is that like when you watch videos back of things that you remember it starts to like alter your your memory of that thing so i wanted to try and make sure i had the most kind a pure form of this and one of the first things that is absolutely amazing so we got there on the Monday we get on this we get on uh it's the first time ever I've flown on a chartered flight so flew with all the staff which is amazing um and we got there and got settled in the hotel and then you have to go and get your accreditations and do all the the bits and pieces and at this point it's just total optimism you know that that feeling that we all had like you don't it doesn't even enter into your mind there's a possibility that you might lose the game because at that point it's just oh we're in a final this is so exciting and at some point you'll have to pivot to the idea that we've got to play a football game soon i think you said it on one of your pods as well jack it was like i actually haven't confronted the idea of that horrible hell of the fact that you'll have to stomach 90 minutes of that against a side like man united that have always turned up in finals and make remember what was it 2018 2019 semi-final in 2018 yeah and you and i we didn't we we both we we had a ticket to wembley and we were both sat there and there was just something almost intangible wasn't there in the air about the way that the fans were were like holding themselves the way the players were pre-match all of it we both sort of looked at each other and we were just like we're gonna lose this aren't we like man united just yeah what is it and i think we maybe heard a few United fans on the walk up to Wembley Way just being very like they just looked so relaxed they were like we're not losing this to Spurs weren't they saying it's all the stuff that like Neville and Carragher and all that lot were saying in the in the lead up to this which obviously prompted Flav's now infamous just you wait yeah yeah which I love because it did feel different this time around but that month that Monday was like incredible like traveling with basically you're given the club polo for the final there was a specific club polo shirt that you wear you travel with like 60 of you on this charter flight and that in itself is like a once in a lifetime thing you know like just getting onto the getting onto the plane and then going down to the stadium straight away to go and get your accreditation but seeing all the branding being put up and um even even then you're just like aware that it's massive that there was all A lot of people said the difference was for Spurs, they were going to win the Europa League.
11:36For United, they were going to get the backdoor into the Champions League. And that, for me, just was so tangible from the very first moment. For all of us, for the staff, for the players, for the fans, everyone, it just felt like this is our chance to win something and to get rid of that horrible thing that everyone had been launching at us. So from moment one when you arrived, slightly different feeling, but total optimism. Can you just take us into that a bit, Ben? How does that sort of manifest? Is it like the players? Were we now? Were the players now just being the ones like, we're winning this?
12:10Yeah, so let me get the actual moment. I had two moments over the course of the sort of like week where I was just like, we are absolutely going to win this. And the first one was, I was stood in the hotel lobby. We were waiting for the players to arrive, just kind of like being there for when they arrived so it wasn't just in what they weren't just arriving into a hotel hotel brand and everything but it's like me and a couple of the other video people spurs tv and social people and there was just this like stealiness where i was just like oh wow we're gonna win we're actually gonna win like you just felt it they came into the hotel i don't even remember but they were wearing like the limited edition tracksuit things they looked the absolute shit and they got through the door and they just were walking 10 feet tall and for whatever people wanted to say about angie i think if you ask any one of those players he is an absolute master at delivering a team talk and like just the way that he handled the kind of like crescendo of energy at the right time for that final players just they arrived into the hotel and i just got this sort of tingle down the back of my spine as they walked in they just were like that there was like there was absolutely nothing that was going to stop them winning on the night it was it was amazing so that was a that was a massive moment and then the other thing I'd say is that like the club did absolutely everything exquisitely from the fact that Rob and Clive were commentating in the stands in like a part of it they had all of us there from the Monday to make sure that everything was ready to go like it was it was done in a way that you know people so often talked in the past about the idea that that other clubs might do things like with a view to winning or whatever and it had been a criticism that oh spurs don't want to win enough there is not a single part of that experience for me that suggested anything other than like we were going out there to win which is just incredible anyway I've been speaking for ages.
14:17That was like the first two days. It was very much a case of like, go and do all the preview-based stuff and like soak it up. And then you did a charter flight as well, right? It was like with the legends. With the legends, yeah. Left from Southend. There were Spurs fans on it as well who had got tickets for that flight, but went over with, so it was like, I was obviously mainly with Clive, but there was like Graham Roberts, there was Sandro, who's just been so funny. He's amazing energy-wise. What a bloke, man. Did he whip his guitar out? He didn't on the flight. He did get on the mic and start singing on the little intercom thing.
15:03Graham Roberts basically went up and did stand-up. Then Clive went up and did this kind of keep your head straight, lads. We've got a good shot. Quite a straight thing. and then sandra just got grabbed it and started singing and then um and aj tracy was on that flight as well like it was it was it was really surreal this is this is a fever dream it was a real surreal thing and then we landed and we went and and you were saying i was texting ben like where are you at and you were at the fan park and i was like okay i think we're we're gonna go we the legends me and then aj tracy weirdly then got a minibus to the to the fan park um and it was you're talking about the players mentality and the managers mentality and the club's mentality when we got to the fan park well the place was just it was going off obviously like everyone was having the best time and the energy from the fans there was it was this was the day you know it felt really different like it wasn't this kind of hopeful you know maybe just imagine the possibility of winning it was this was the time now like enough mucking about with losing big games and recent finals and everything, this is the one.
16:17I don't know if that would be a shared experience of other people who were there, but it was a really euphoric place to be. And then when I saw, obviously I saw you, Ben, as soon as I got there, and was kind of taking it all in, what the vibe was like. We didn't need to stay there, but just stay there for a couple of hours just to try and just sort of watch everyone. And then Sandra did get on stage, didn't he, with James. and did some Spurs stuff, which was absolutely lovely. But no, it was euphoric. And that was kind of, weirdly, I went, OK, so everyone believes this is the day now. And then got to the ground.
16:56I'm going to fast forward in here for some bits. We might get through, Ben, anyway. But when I saw all the Man United banners up saying, like, all the trophies they'd won and this is what we do, kind of energy, I then started to think, oh, United can win. I did the exact thing that Jamie Carragher was talking about. I was like, oh, yeah, they do just win all this stuff all the time. But no, yeah. I thought, genuinely, I thought that was going to go to, not today, boys, not today. I was like, even Clive. Clive's kind of up and down with whoever he's in a really optimistic mood, isn't he, Ben? He's brilliant.
17:39but it can change in the space of five minutes. Sometimes he'll just be like, we're going to win this today and then it'll be like, not sure about this one and it'll be like League One team in the League Cup kind of thing. I can't remember his kind of vibe. I've got to say, that is years of spurs, is it? Because that's exactly what my dad is like. Like, exactly. Yeah. But he can change on a six as well. Like, sort of like tap Rob on the shoulder like really hard and be like, we're beating these lot. Yeah. And Rob will be like, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's Man City, 35 unbeaten. like yeah exactly this lot two minutes two minutes in we have a shot on target from distance we're beating these lot today we're doing these and then and then two minutes later they'll have a chance he's just i'll tell you what we're all over the place
18:28but what was great uh jack like we i mean i don't know if we're getting too into the weeds here with like the day and everything for people but no please do it's great um when we got to the fan park i was like um i was like we were we were just watching all the singing we were like on a little um we had an office well the club had an office didn't they ben that was next to the stage so you could stand two levels up and watch everything and then i tried to go down to the bottom floor of that building like a little demountable building and try and do some work and it was like trying to do like your homework at a rave like it was it was just like i can't focus i would say trying to do your homework at a rave on Christmas Eve?
19:10It was just ridiculous. I was like, I can't do this, Ben. We had a big bowl of crisps, but that wasn't settling me down. I just couldn't. What flavour? That's important. It was really solid. It was like a real massive bowl of them. Both of us were just nervous eating. Both of us yamming these crisps. It was kind of like legends walking past us like, are they okay? Yeah, like Aussie, I do those or just like take one. And then I was like, this is stimulation overload. Because you're kind of like with me, a few hours before a game, you want to like know how you're going to start the game. You kind of know the kind of places you want to get to in the game.
19:49And I was just like, where can I go, Ben? So we just left and went to the kind of staff hotel, didn't we? And did some work there for an hour and then walked San Mamez from there. One of my favourite moments that, I know that's really tragic, but it's one of my favourite moments of the whole week. It was just having this little calm before the storm where basically Rob went through every single bit of like commentary prep. And then I went through every single bit of interview prep. Oh, yeah. This is the thing we did. This was good, actually, Jack. Because like you are kind of hyper aware for the stuff me and Ben were doing on the day.
20:23None of it was live. But you're aware it's all like time capsule stuff. You know, it's like when people go back to watch the Europa League, they're going to drink it all in and all that stuff and watch all the content. like everyone was just all over the content for like three days when they like um content pigs but me and ben were like i was like i don't know if i said it he said let's go through every player and go what is their story if tottenham win like we literally went that's so sick didn't we ben and we went through like um brennan say brennan's arc of the season right the start the social media thing coming around to being the top scorer that's it this even before he'd scored you know like you kind of know for Sonny it's just at last right the legend gets his trophy there are some easy ones for like Kuti or Mickey it might be a season of injury misery right you can't so every single player we had the context of what that kind of meant and it was good for me should that player score so like with Brennan when Brennan I said something about him being top scorer because I kind of just had in my head this kind of redemption not redemption that'd be really the wrong word for it because he didn't do anything wrong at the start of last season and then hopefully it helped Ben when we did that going into each interview kind of knowing the top line of that player for what that meant to them right Ben that was kind of what we did yeah I mean ultimately I think that's the that's the key thing is you're so so aware that for I guess for Rob it's like that this line is going to live forever whatever the lines are going to be the lines that are synonymous because i think one thing i will say i think as spurs fans we're we kind of i've used this analogy before on here i think but we we the way that we see it is a lot like um parents telling off other kids at the park like you can shout at your own kids but you're not allowed to shout at my kid and that's very much how we see that's very much how we see commentary on our team it's like you can say nice things about us but once you start saying sort of like little gnarky things Spurs fans are like nah I'm not having this and so the one thing you do want to do is make sure like because you know how much it means to the Spurs fan base is like you need to nail every beat of those things so we literally like Rob said we sort of went from top to bottom and was like right narratives what are the narratives and also I'm always hyper aware of being in those moments that really like it's about these it's about these young guys that are basically having if they win they're having maybe a once in a lifetime experience hopefully not hopefully now it's one of those things that they experience loads of times but on the pitch after the game or as the ball goes in there's only that they're only going to have that that experience once and i think also afterwards i know we've gone to the parade and stuff but you realize that because of the length of time that had been since we last won a european trophy that is once in a generation you know because if Spurs win another European trophy it will be incredible but this was the one that broke the run this was the one that kind of got Spurs over the line and meant that finally the sort of monkey was off your off your back at that point um but that that little session was invaluable because it meant that by the time that it came to post-match we just sort of knew what everyone's key thing was like what is what is their moment what and what was their moment along the journey as well because all of them had a little moment on the Europa League run as well whether that be the young lads against Elfsborg or whether it be Madison who was at the game and then misses out and Lucas Beraval as well who was amazing and and and you just sort of wanted to I just think it was good for like just sort of calming the nerves a bit and then I've I've got some really great pictures, actually, of everyone walking together to the stadium.
24:14Do you remember that, Rob? We kind of walked with all of the editorial guys, and for some of them, they've been there for 25 years, and they've seen Spurs win just the League Cup in that time. And so you're walking with this group of people that felt like they're carrying the weight of the world on them as well because they've done 18 semifinals, maybe in seven finals or something crazy like that. So they're all carrying all of that into it as well. So then we kind of got to the stadium. And did you go up? Did you go straight up to your commentary bit at that point? Yeah, I was just so nervous that stuff wasn't going to work.
24:46I was just absolutely, I was like, nothing can mess with me today. Like, do you mean like technology? Technology, yeah, not my brain. Like, I mean, I was just like, I've got to go and make sure this is going back to Stockley Park where the audio is going back to. I just had to check everything was working fine. And once everything was, and I saw loads of familiar faces, you end up with those things just bumping into a myriad of people you know. And then it kind of, yeah. And then by the time the game comes around, you do feel kind of ready. Ready to... You feel pumped. Really, why are you so pumped, yeah.
25:24I know this is sort of verging into I'm not a performing monkey territory, Rob, but can you just, just between friends, can you just give us the line if we step into the multiverse where Timo Werner scores the 89th winner in the Europa League final for Tottenham against Manchester United what's the line mate it's Timo time guys boost gumps boost gumps on the back of my neck oh mate when he said boost gumps oh no believe it yeah well I mean Timo's it's funny because obviously Timo's like even I think we kind of had our Who else was on the bench? Was Mikey on the bench? You had to think, Jesus Christ, what if Mikey Moore came on and scored the winner?
26:07Not impossible. If you're chasing the game and suddenly that's your attacking options that you're bringing on. Yeah, it was wild. Was it Tildesley, remember the name Wayne Rooney? Yes. You remember that one? Yeah, Tildesley, yeah. That was, isn't it? Yeah, yeah. You could do something with that. Well, a line. Yeah, I mean, the thing was, there was a lot of variables that night, wasn't there? And it was like, so it could have gone absolutely all sorts of different directions. Thankfully, from our point of view, it actually turned out to be probably the least dramatic. You kind of had the key ingredients there, right?
26:41You get the clearance off the line from Mickey. You've got the goal. You've got a couple of... The big save at the end, I feel like. It wasn't like an amazing, amazing save, but it was a really good save. Like 96-minute bullet header, you know. Full stretch. Yeah, they felt like the three kind of big ones. And actually, when you watch it back, you know that chance for Ahmad Diallo in the first half? He was close, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He was so close to scoring the first goal in the final. 28:58You kind of felt, and Ben just pointed his fingers in the outside. I think you know what you're going to say, actually. Oh, you just reminded me of something. You know who's saying defensively? We'd been working on this documentary for months, basically going on the assumption, listen, Spurs are getting to the final, winning it. Because of the way that the draw kind of came out and the way that things were going to progress, like, A, we were confident, there was a couple of us working on this doc, we were confident that Spurs were going to go far because looking at it, people had Spurs down as the favourites, I think, at the beginning of the season, didn't they, Rob?
29:36Spurs favourites at the beginning? Yeah, yeah, they were. They were. I think Tottenham were bookies favourites at the start. Yeah. So we're like, well, look, we'll start on this journey making this documentary about it. And then once it got after the semi-final, we sat down with Matt Wells to talk about... You basically were almost recording ahead of time, being like, look, how's the final going to play out? What's going to happen? What are the things that we're looking out for? And Matt Wells basically described to us the first 45 seconds of the game. he was like these are the things that will happen within the first 45 seconds of the game xyz one two three and if this happens like we can be confident if you watch the first minute of that game you'll see what that was about the way that spurs are going to apply pressure yeah yeah yeah and it was unbelievable because he was like a piece of tracing paper like literally the move I can't remember I think it was United who had kick off and the way that Spurs sort of pushed them into a certain area and then United launched the ball long and then Spurs went back into left-sided centre-back and then Euro pumped it yeah Euro I think so yeah and it was unbelievable which we then spoke to Matt about on the Sunday didn't we after the Brian game and we were like that first minute it was literally the thing you said yeah crazy just incredible but one One quick thing here, sorry, I know we've done like 25 minutes just on like pre-match, but there was a moment just before the game, and I don't know how many people would have seen this, but it was like, you don't keep Ange Postacoglu waiting.
31:14Basically, if he's coming to do an interview with you, that is the time that that interview is taking place. Ange Postacoglu is kind of like Gandalf, he arrives exactly when he means to, and you will do the interview at that point, like that's when it happens. and he had basically come out to do his interview with TNT and I just think they weren't ready at that time because they were in a commercial break. So he had to go and stand in the corner of the pitch in front of the Spurs fans and just wait there for like five minutes, which just is like not a thing. But the fans just went crazy. Like Spurs fans just went absolutely bananas and it was like electric.
31:51And he just sort of stood there and aura farmed a bit, but it really got people going and people were just raucous. It was unbelievable. It was so, it was quite overwhelming, the excitement of it. And this is sort of like still 45 minutes before kickoff. And you're just like, Jesus, how are we going to sustain this level of support for the entire game? Like, genuinely speaking, do you think, just I guess from, you know, being on the other side of the curtain a bit, it's like, do you feel like Anja's words that I always win something in my second season? do you think that did actually have an effect?
32:28Do you think that partly did or no pun intended spur things on a bit? Yeah, I do he is very good at messaging it's clear and the affection for him from the players upon his departure was evident he had made a really strong emotional connection with that group and he put it on the line didn't he? I mean, he did with that lion and pulled it off. But I do think it did something. It probably did have a factor somewhere, Jack, in them believing they could do it. It got more prophetic as the year went on, didn't it, as well? Yeah. It started as a lion and then it sort of became, it almost became a bit of a kind of, what would you call it, a prophecy sort of thing by the end in real time it was something that we used to beat him with when the team was losing games in the league it was like but the reality was well they're still in the Europa League and they probably are the best team you know I was looking at Athletic Club actually thinking oh and then United go Tonkham in Bilbao and I was like oh wow this is really I couldn't quite believe it that was such a freak result wasn't it crazy first half how the way that went for United you know not you know no pop of them you know credit to them but when it was united in the final I did fancy Spurs to win it full stop you know I just thought they've had the better of them in all three games easily you know wobble in the 4-3 but that aside yeah backed them what was going through your head Ben because I you know I do recall your real kind of like calm before the storm yeah I think you had a few kind of quite stoic posts on like maybe the morning of the final or i want to say maybe the morning before when you arrived about him jack yeah probably always always you get in there and you make this about you yeah yeah they're taking that photo i believe going up the steps to the pitch um what's going through your head at that point was that the um was that when we were doing sort of a walk through the stadium potentially yeah yeah so i did a little walk walk and talk thing through the stadium and that was um it was kind of like as they were laying out the tifo and that was really cool because that was then like oh wow we're doing it i mean because we obviously don't want to go over too much of uh the champions league final but you'd had that moment before where you turn up and you're just so delighted to be there where Spurs fans had turned up to Madrid and were just like can you believe this we're here whereas this time it was a little bit more like okay we've got to go and win that really felt like you can't turn up to this one this is not a make up the numbers sort of job this is a turn up and get the job done kind of feeling and it was You know my affection for Mauricio Pochettino, Ben, but weirdly I thought that was such a bizarre misstep from him.
35:40Too emotional. The whole handling of that Champions League final, I think he was a bit lost in the moment as opposed to the bigger bit. I can't speak on behalf of a football manager, but just from the outside, it just felt, you know, getting the whole team out on the pitch, all of it. It was very Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup final. Will it? I think that's to come back to that point that I sort of said earlier on, you know, the whole we're turning up to win thing. If you look at, I think if you go back to the Champions League final, everyone will have made, I wasn't working for the club at times.
36:14I have no idea about the planning or anything, but everyone will have made, everyone would have had, as always, the best intentions, right? Everyone would have gone out to go and win that game. But it definitely felt like that was learned from this time around. Definitely felt like a lot of the people that were there at that time had been like, had almost seen that experience and been like, no, you go out. I think the players literally arrived the day before the game. You know, they didn't go out early. I think Spurs might have gone out early to Madrid. Whereas if I'm right, Rob, I think Jurgen Klopp learned from the year before.
36:48Yeah, when Spurs, forgive me, people will correct us 100%, but Spurs were actually out in Madrid for quite a while. A week. a week and I thought did the players not go Monday? Did they for Bilbao? Yeah maybe sorry maybe the players travelled on Monday yeah Monday Monday night so they had the night there trained on the pitch the day before and then straight into the game so it wasn't enough time for it to it didn't really feel like they were dwelling or it's a balance isn't it it's like how do you manage the treat this as a normal game do your thing with the the obvious magnitude of it and trying to steer into that and use it as a as a motivator to win without over-awing your players or making things too grandiose or I don't know it's a tricky balance I mean maybe the fact that it was midweek and that Spurs played on the Friday kind of helped that it kind of concertina you concertina you into just only having three days to think about It was no secret.
37:52You looked at the team selection for the Villa game and you kind of knew where everyone's head was at. I didn't know if... I forget the game before. Was it the Palace game? I forget the exact time. It was the Palace-Villa Cup final. I think it was because Deky got injured in the Palace game, didn't he? Kulosevsky got injured in the Palace game. But kind of the group that we're going to play in the final were obviously being kind of really carefully managed. And again, another balancing thing for me going into that final was, you know Mickey Van der Ven and Romero were barely playing right other than the European games it was like oh are they going to be like rusty by the time it comes to the final did Mickey play 45 against Palace did he literally play him for 45 minutes let me google it maybe 60 minutes like I think there was something like that where he might have played played for an hour and then come off and I mean when you actually think about that in the context of a Premier League season.
38:50It's so wild, isn't it? That you have these two world-class centre-backs and you're just like, she can't risk you. You're just too good. That's right, yeah. Because that season felt that way as well, didn't it? It just felt like every time a player stepped on the pitch, it's like, we don't know what's happening. We're just rolling the dice here and maybe they're going to get injured, maybe not. You know? Matty Wells said it was like something out of Final Destination. but that's such a great it's such a great line because he was like you just get to a you get to a point where people were coming in with injuries so it'd be like some i'm sort of just making this line up it was someone like someone like trip over their cat and they'd come in and they'd be out for like two months it was just like it was just absolutely bananas and you do sometimes just get that and sometimes that that sort of stuff can just happen because some of the injuries at the end were just like freak incidents yeah i mean kulezewski actually playing in that game, the Palace game, him and Poro were the only...
39:49Mickey didn't play in that game. I kind of had a similar memory to you, but it was Davison Danso. I swear he had something wrong. But Kuliszewski, I feel like, and Poro were the first team players who played in the game. And then Kuliszewski gets injured with just a crunching tackle. What can you do? It's not a muscle thing. And obviously that's been a really bad injury for him. Crazy. But yeah. Was it Petr Cech that dropped the bottle of aftershave on his foot? That was Canizares, wasn't it? Was it? I think it was Canizares. So good. Yeah, amazing. I love an embarrassing injury. They're the best.

40:25Wasn't there someone that opened, it was a goalkeeper that opened the door with their foot and it was a glass door and they put their foot through it? Yeah, who was that? I can't remember the time I had. I'll Google that in a second. But just like, that's kind of where we got to really. so I mean to have managed to have got to that point where that 11 was out on the pitch and everyone was kind of like you feel dreadful don't you for players like Madders who really I think if he plays in that final he wins player of the tournament he was Spurs the best player in Europe he was the best player and he relished it he really loved it the big the big sort of under the lights can he turn it on and win a game or affect a game I think it was it was one of those things as well and I've definitely been very very guilty of this is digging out players like so said like a christian romero for example because i've often come at it from the mouth-breathing fan perspective of like well you know look he's supposed to be one of our best players but he doesn't look like he's very committed and blah blah blah blah blah but when you're watching something like that a showpiece final against manchester united and seeing him grow seeing his like presence on the pitch Argentina captain now, but not at the time, still a World Cup winner with Argentina.
41:47There was that bit in me that suddenly, it suddenly like clicked in my head though, where I was like, these are like, these are the players that actually win you stuff like this. You know, like he and he was, he just totally embodied that. And it just, it's made total sense to me that he's like captain, you know, that he is now like the rock, the guy in charge that he's, I don't know, he's really like, he's really relishing that this season. You can tell, right? And it's, but everybody needed that. Everybody needed that cup win because look, you know, we've had these conversations about Spursy or about ownership or about who should have won this or what managers have done.
42:32I think we can also say though, Spurs have probably just been a bit unlucky. like I the 17 years thing was used as like this stick to beat Spurs with Spursy they bottle everything they don't win anything blah blah blah blah and my point is of course we can always sort of you know look inward and take some of the responsibility for that and look at ways in which we can improve but I do also feel like Spurs had been unlucky I really feel that way and what was just the relief of that game really was we believe we can win it we are gonna win it and we just did it you know like it's like that's how that feels that that's how that feels now let's have some more and I don't I don't mean that in like the the the greedy way as in like oh I have to have this to now get that rush again it's more just like let's just do this now because It feels like this is the corner we've turned as a club.
43:33And it feels like that's the mentality, at least from the outside, that has shifted in so many of the players and just the club itself after that final. I even think Romero is a big part of that. I mean, you know, the way he played that final was extraordinary. I mean, he was obviously, him and Harry Maguire were just at each other's throats the whole game. But when Romero is in that pocket, that zone of like competitive, controlled, horrible to play against, like absolutely horrible to play against, winning every tackle. And I imagine, I think his, I don't know, the way Mickey Van der Ven's carrying himself and the way he's doing his interviews and stuff like that, I think Romero's kind of infected him a bit with that in a really good way, that Van der Ven is getting that kind of like, what, like near elite, like elite footballer winning mentality kind of thing um so what was the you know because there was a lot of people talking about before before the final christian mamera was like not just on the pitch he was like marshalling the players off the pitch as in like get in get your heads into this now we're going into a final right well the big the big one was directly before kickoff.
44:52He marched, he was obviously captain on the night. He marched the team to do the huddle in front of the Spurs fans in the middle of Man United's half. So Man United set up in their positions and then he walked everyone out, sort of led the team, him walking out in front and all 10 of the others walking behind him into the centre of Man United's half to do the team huddle there. And I was just like, whoa, what a massive, massive flex that is massive chopper energy yeah that's what it is like energy just riding into the and and the thing was is that on the night i mean fair play to harry mcguire he really gave as good as he got but it just romero was on a level that was just far superior i mean i've seen people talk a little bit about um sergio ramos like this this kind of being a similar thing i can't remember who said it so i'm forgive me i'm plagiarizing here but um sergio ramos had this at Real Madrid.
45:48When he first arrived at Real Madrid, he was seen as this huge talent and he had a lot to offer. He had supposedly had bad, I mean, did have a bad disciplinary record and stuff and people were sort of saying, well, what's it going to take for him to kind of go on to this next level? And they said that, like, there's a couple of trophy wins that just saw him shift from being a prospect to being a guy that just knew how to do it and started carrying himself like a guy that knew how to get over the line. I think you're seeing that with Romero now. He looks, he already looked like a world class centre back but now he looks like a guy that is just so assured in terms of being like a leader of a group as well he very much carries himself like the captain it's really quite cool I feel like he's going to lead his country to a second World Cup as well I sort of feel like they're going to do it again you know and that's only good for Spurs that's just you know good for you as well claim you're an RG for the day yeah the plastic I'll dust it off I'll dust the old shirt off I'll start calling it the Malvinus again that kid wearing the plastic bag that he's got from the offy and then drawing a number 10 on the back the little blue and white plastic bag messy dash Maradona that's it
47:10we've run out of time so let's move on to the oh no come on I can't do this what's the time limit yeah yeah we're good okay all right all right no no no yeah we are actually yeah so all the uh including all the stuff i was talking about at the beginning about my my toilet habits um habits is the wrong word it was i had a bad kebab once let's leave it there Exactly. Past time. Yeah.
47:41That final whistle goes, obviously on a professional level, you're like, yes, I'm going to get to work on some really awesome stuff in the coming, in the coming weeks. But just on that level, like just, I don't know, just, just sum that up, lads, sum that up, being there, being in the heart of it all. How was that? Well, you go first. I mean, you've got one of the greatest commentary lines of Spurs history. And I mean, what's beautiful for you is that you get the goal kick, right? Yeah, perfect. Did that give you just a moment? Yeah, I just actually changed things up. I kind of knew where I wanted to go like this, definitely thinking like, oh, at last, energy, right?
48:25That there was going to be something around that. Like, it's not like you're scripted in that moment, but you kind of know the kind of areas you want to go. and I thought the referee's going to blow his whistle here I can like ask what appears to be a rhetorical question and then answer it on the other side of the whistle so I was like can I time this I saw him lifting up his whistle and I was like has it happened and then I could hit the whistle and then get the the thing about um it has happened like that was in the moment and then obviously Clive does his thing the thing that everyone comes up to me and says that's the the thing that kind of makes them tear up is when Clive goes, we've done it, Rob.
49:07We've done it, Rob. We've done it, Rob. We've done it. It was just so pure. It was so from the heart. It was unbelievable. Like he just really did. So mean. Because you can hear his throat going. You can hear it. Well, there's a bit. I'm kind of surprised it hasn't ended up on social media in some way. But as we're waiting for the trophy lift, because you can watch the whole thing still back on Spurs play. Like maybe people didn't trawl back through all that stuff, like the players congratulating each other before the medals but there's a bit where you know you kind of fill in the time and I said to Clive because his his son was in the stands everyone knows his family history with Tottenham um his grandson was there and I was just like look what's this mean to you Clive like you've got your son your grandson here and it's happened at last and he just goes like he just he gets his words out but he's you know choking up and starting to tear up and he just gets it out and it's just this unbelievably beautiful moment really like Clive is kind of when we're working together Clive is that voice really and he just really you know you could see how much it meant to him and I as I've told a million people like when we were trying to leave the stadium because we were told the second the trophy lift happens you have to leave you run and get your minibus because your flight's leaving so they did the trophy lift and we everyone was having a party ben was about to get on it with a team or whatever you know what i mean and me and clive were running out of the bowl and uh ran down to the bottom and i was like right where's the meeting point and he was like i don't know i thought you knew where it was i was like oh i was like oh my god we're gonna miss this flight and so then um i was like okay okay let's but we had no signal you know he got no signal and clive said he had no signal but every single member of the allen family i could see was getting whatsapps through to him like um and then uh i told this story the other day um a thing for the athletic but and then in the there was no spurs fans outside because everyone was still inside and then it was like aj i saw aj tracy who i had not spoken to once in the day but when i saw him i was so happy i just went aj and he looked at me like who on earth are you but i knew that if he was there the he was near the minibus so i was like oh okay right so i'm not going to miss this flight because at that point we already knew that we were doing the parade like me and clive were told if there's a thing the parade's friday you're going to host it blah blah blah so heaven forbid you miss that flight and then you're suddenly in the world of trying to get on some like how'd you get back i mean what the hell do you do there's no seats on any of those tottenham planes back home so uh yeah just a massive relief i've never been so happy to see a rapper in my life you could have you could have joined jack pitbrook on his tugboat or whatever it was crazy crazy adventure amazing stuff unbelievable and ben you uh i mean your interview with you sonny you know final whistle comes and you're talking to him about how he's basically going to be, he's the hero that was promised, that he's made history at the club.
52:18How are you keeping it together in that point? Because it looks like, you know, I know you quite well, Ben, and you're a consummate professional, but I'm like, he's going to go. He's going to go. I can see. And I'm looking at Sonny as well. I'm like, he's going to go as well. They're both going to go. That was wobbly. That was by the end. Because it was when, yeah, I can't remember what the line was, but he just said something. and I was just like, and I went to start my next question. I was like, I'm just sort of... This episode is brought to you by Google Chrome. You think you know a browser, but Gemini and Chrome? That's new. It can help you with practically anything on the web, like restoring a vintage motorcycle from a 50-page restoration block, or finally break down that long article you've had open for weeks.
54:22Gemini and Chrome is here for it. Ready to make anything online make sense? There's no place like Chrome. Check responses set up required compatibility and availability varies 18+. I couldn't get out the next bit I was about to say but it's a lovely the most important thing I think in those interviews is and I know this probably sounds sort of like faux humble but I really, you know, I really believe this it's so crucial that really all you are doing there is providing a platform for this person who's having the most monumental experience to say the things that they want to say, to get the thing across that they mean and to get the thing across that they feel at that time.
55:08And actually all you're trying to do is just, like, those should be the most straightforward interviews in the world, but there are a million ways that you can balls them up, I think. Like, you should just do the simple stuff and let these guys that have had this experience tell everyone what it's like to be on the pitch at that moment and not make it about you and not make it about anything that you're feeling make it just all about them and let them share it with the crowd actually the hardest thing to do is to like get through it quickly enough so that you don't feel like you're impinging on their time yeah because they've actually they're giving you five minutes and that experience after the after the the full-time whistle you get maybe 20 minutes then running around going crazy and celebrating and then do the trophy lift maybe yeah 20 minutes to half an hour and then after the trophy lift you probably have like an hour on the pitch so you're saying like one twelfth of that experience that they have to enjoy the biggest success they've had in their career you're asking for the for them to kind of give you that focus time it's like a big it's a big deal so but i think what i think though in in defense of like the job is that because you feel like you're interrupting the party right yeah you know like yeah yeah um but that is a time capture for them of how they felt like you can see the like physical reactions out there but to lock in the words of how they felt in that moment i'm sure for all of those players in their latter years you know they'll be 60 years old or something and they'll watch those things back um and not just be thinking oh didn't Ben Haynes kind of get jacked between like Feb and May but wasn't but wasn't that's what I was like that was how I spoke that was how I felt like it was a really and I think you've even had that on the bus a bit Ben like I forget which player said to you you spoke and they were like do you mind actually if I don't do something right now I forget who it was and then later they came up to you and went I'm up for it now like yeah it was Madders it was matters right so he was obviously in a trickier spot maybe it was like he was still having the best time obviously but um being injured and everything but you know it's good for them and maybe matters having this a little bit with his youtube channel and stuff like that like locking in this all these memories and stuff you know it's important that they've got that little something of how they felt in that moment because they you know every player gets interviewed by every channel but you basically did it close to ben yeah we interviewed every well and yeah that That was the thing.
57:42I think the Brendan Johnson was the one that I was probably, I think looking back, the one that I was most proud of because it's really hard to get people to give you nuggets of information they haven't already said. You know, the chances are they're going to... On that night, this is one of the things I put in this sort of voice note to myself. On that night, Spurs Media facilitated 97 interviews, not including club interviews. so outside of just our stuff they did 97 other interviews on the on the on the night so for them to say something that they haven't said in the other 97 is like the gold and brennan johnson talking about the idea of like family and togetherness and how they shared their back stories with each other and kind of told each other what it meant to be part of that team a few days before this is what i mean about and just being a bit of a master of kind of like understanding how to drag something out of a group of people that was like that was a master stroke you know for players to share vulnerabilities with each other is that was that was really quite smart and that was amazing i mean that was just absolutely incredible and then i know we've been chatting for ages here but i will say this is like that going to that after party with the players is possibly that i my wedding was like obviously i'm like gotta say as number one, but like that after party was possibly the greatest night I've had of my, it was unbelievable.
59:15I mean, mate, did you ever, you surely had that moment where you were like, I'm on the beers with Spurs players after we've just won a European trophy against Man United. I'm doing shots, I think, Jack. Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Like, I was really sort of, I was almost a little bit glad that some of those videos kind of came out that were not supposed to come out that people just sort of like people who were just there on the night put those videos because it meant that people like it means that everyone knows that party like happened I'm so glad that people got to see that these these guys just let their hair down and just were like oh my god we've done this incredible thing and the singing was unbelievable every single player just singing tottenham songs like just singing as if they were in the south stand you know just in the bar after the game just singing away and having the best time and like um which is like using the tables as drums for when the spurs and like absolutely hammering these tables like just yeah it's brilliant and everyone stayed out until silly o 'clock and just wanted to keep it going and eventually got to a point where we're just like, right.
1:00:30No, there's work to do. There was work to do. The hotel moved us on. I mean, I walked back. I think I walked back. There's a group of us that walked back to the hotel at 6am. I'm just imagining you staggering around Bilbao with Madders and Cootie Romero looking for kebabs. You know that's my vibe. That wimpy's going to be open in 30 minutes. there's got to be food somewhere i don't really fancy breakfast but if we can find something like a chicken burger i'll take anything i'll take it's funny though like because we were getting the flight back in the flight back i was on it's just like a normal sized plane just full of spurs fans basically in the legends in my head i was like this is gonna be a party plane this is gonna be a quite mad flight and then everyone got back to this quiet i forget the name of the airport like bill bal vittorio ben the one that's like quite far away there's like the main one the top Tottenham's one was like the one the Tottenham delegate was like far away.
1:01:27Everyone was so emotionally drained. They had nothing left. I spoke to a Spurs mate, Sioram Bilbao, who said after the final, it was like, I haven't got anything left. I've just got to go to bed. Because it was such, you know, the whole thing, the whole day. Obviously, people have been on it probably for like 15 hours. But like, it was just like this big emotional thing. Ben's holding up a video of himself at this party now. as ever. It's just a Europa League trophy bouncing about. It's just nonsense. Like it's an inflatable champagne bottle. It's just nonsense. Yeah. Absolute nonsense. Crazy.
1:02:03But then, yeah, then we literally straight back for the parade, I think, almost immediately, right? One day and then... Yeah, it was all Czech meetings and calls the next day about the parade and what was going to happen and then it was obviously Friday. So, yeah. Were you two and were the club surprised by how big that ended up being because i i was i'm not gonna lie yeah i think i got there was there was that bit in the back of my head where i was like god is this gonna be one of those things where there's 30 000 people here and it's there's a few sparse smatterings of people and it's all over the internet look at tottenham look how cringes this but to see you know whatever it was 300 000 people lining the streets was it was surreal that that to me being in the in the midst of all that that was honestly something i'd literally dreamed about before being in that exact position seeing a bus go past with a massive shiny and like a significant one you know like a big significant trophy up there i i couldn't believe i wish i wish i was almost less emotional about it at the time so i could have taken it in on a more i don't know what do we say empirical I don't think there's any world in which you could have done It's all just a blur It was actually and I'm sure this is the same for you Rob because Rob's on the balcony on the stadium overlooking the biggest part of the crowd Mate I was literally I was at the ground level I was trying to shout him Jack Proper Partridge I don't know that guy What was so bad was we were on this balcony and I kept hearing like, uh, rah, rah, and I'm thinking it was people shouting for me and I'd look down and they're like, can you get Clive?
1:03:52Can you get Clive? So they wanted Clive. So I stopped looking over the balcony as sheer embarrassment. So whoever was... Can you get Clive? Yeah, it was like, can you get Clive? And then he was throwing down like signed pictures and all this kind of thing. It was amazing. But I just, I was just like, I can't keep sticking my head over that balcony because none of it's for me. It's all, it's all Clive. So you and my friend Jim, I think actually was trying to get him, as well but um yeah so it wasn't like clive be like rob mate there's someone trying to get you down there he's like don't just don't look don't look don't look yeah just just yeah he's just some just some podcast melt don't just don't look exactly i was that the whole thing was just so sorry i mean i got we got there quite early didn't we ben on the day i was just kind of and uh the fact people i was like got out of a i think it was water lane station and came out and I was like, what are these people doing here?
1:04:41It's like 12 o 'clock. It's 12 o 'clock. And it was just like packed by the stage and all that. I was like, oh my God, I think I've misjudged like what's going to happen today. And it was probably good because if we'd known the magnitude of it, Ben, I don't know if we would have been a lot more nervous. Like suddenly, you know, we were doing all this stuff, but we were just kind of in it. It was good actually that we just kind of didn't know what to expect really. Kind of did it. We did another little session as well. Like, do you remember this? but two things from that day is that we had firstly we had another little session in the it was like a little studio um at uh at the training sorry at the stadium so we had a little had a little session there and um we did like i don't know sort of 20 minutes then where we kind of went through everything again for what the different permutations would be and then we actually had 20 minutes at the end of the day whereas everyone had gone home like everyone and it was just Rob and me left and we just kind of sat in this empty stadium where there'd just been like 300 or thousand people passed around it and we were just like mate what like what just happened yeah we just sort of sat there for 20 minutes just kind of like I think we had a beer and we were just like yeah that was just the most crazy the buzz was like pretty mad like because obviously we were on air live for four hours with no scripts not a thing like the thing had been kind of and um it was the craziest yeah it was absolutely mental it was absolutely being at ground level like being in and amongst it or you're just conscious of like there's people all around me and i'm sort of quite penned in here to to even just get like a like a little glimpse at the scale of what was going on is sometimes i just like hold my phone up and take a picture with like a wide setting with like a wide lensing take it down and have a look and just be like right this is this is pretty mad like just seeing people and smoke from flares as far as the eye can see and i i've managed to sort of wriggle my way to be pretty just just to like just past like the club shop so between like the club shop and where the stage had been set up for the trophy presentation i was around there and like i said when i held my phone up either way it's just people as far as you could see it was i did i did have this the thing that you said earlier on jack i definitely had that moment because we at the beginning we got there and there was quite a few people around the stage and then they said like the route is like a mile out so the route is the bus going to be going for a good mile and i thought they're gonna is the street's going to be lined for a mile and i started walking down because i had to be at the bus the players were coming from the training grounds um they're all meeting at the training ground and they'd i think madders had put on a party for them the night before so they had gone straight from this party in bilbao got home and then madders put on a party for everyone the night before and then they had to meet at the training ground i think they had like a light recovery session and then sort of went straight down to the parade and so rob and i had got to stadium i then had to walk the route but it wasn't going seven sisters way it was going the other way sort of into the kind of heart yeah yeah and and that was like it was a long old way we walked the whole way down and by the time we got to the end it was getting quite sparse and i was like i really hope this is not that horrible thing of like we've overcooked this and thought like oh there'll be so many people and actually like there's like a decent amount and sort of you're like oh that was nice and then just while we stood there over the course of we're waiting for about an hour we sort of got there an hour before over the course of this hour it just the people got more and more and more kind of like densely packed in and tightly packed it was it like quite crazy and then the bus started moving and this this kind of like crowd of people that was maybe two or three deep just became sevens eights nines tens and then it was getting to the point where you couldn't actually make out faces anymore because it was just too much for your brain to comprehend it was just too many people for you and the noise just constant noise for you to actually take anything in and I genuinely believe like I think this is the the place that I got to afterwards it's like that's when people talk about the like addiction to winning and knowing how to win and why winners win and stuff like that I always bucked against it but partly just because obviously as a as a Spurs fan you didn't get that feeling I mean like we grew up only experiencing that feeling fleetingly a couple of times i don't remember the fa cup win know about the two league cup wins one of them i was young for the other one was kind of like oh my gosh this is what it's like to win a league cup which is obviously a big deal but it's not like winning the europa league to then have that feeling where you've got 300 000 people en masse feeling this feeling together and these this group of like 25 30 people that are responsible for it getting to feel that adoration of that many people is the most euphoric high that you can possibly think of and the most ridiculous surge of just like happy hormones that you go oh my god of course that's addictive like of course once you've had that you just would never ever want to not have it and you'd like do everything in your power to chase that feeling again and even if it wasn't going to be as high as that you would sure as hell want to get even close to that feeling just to like that that bit when they were all on the balcony and then Sonny lifted the trophy again.
1:10:35You know, when the team first came out and stood on the balcony and lifted the trophy, it was just like, that's the bit. Like, that's the thing you do it for. Like, it's so fleeting. It doesn't last for long. But being there in that moment when that guy that's been in the club for that long then lifts the trophy, it's just like, oh, man. Like, you just, yeah. I'm so desperate to see it again now. I'm so desperate to see them win more stuff. Champions League this year, lads? Yeah. Like any of it, any of it. League Cup, FA Cup, Premier League, Champions League, whatever. I'd love an FA Cup. I'd love an FA Cup.
1:11:13You and I have always said that the FA Cup is just like, that just, it's got something to it and we're synonymous with it. It's a James Bond film on a Saturday afternoon, isn't it? Isn't it just? Isn't it just? It's, you know, it's, oh, go on then. Go on then. Yeah. I know the team just won a cup competition, but I actually feel the team's almost better equipped to win a... It's in a good spot for it. Yeah, I feel like Thomas Frank can be really good in cup, managing cup football, and he is so adaptive. That kind of in-game, one-off match thing that probably, when you do need to mix things up a little bit, treat it a little bit differently.
1:11:56I think Spurs are in a good spot to do well in A Cup. Obviously a horrible, in a way, League Cup draw. A really, really tough game, Newcastle. But I think Spurs are in a good spot. There's enough ammo there to get them going, Rob. That's the way I'm choosing to look at it. That's it. Let's just go with, look at what they've done to us here before down the years. This is your time to avenge that. I mean, we're only in the last 16 at the moment. But go on then, why not? Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Yeah, it's delicious. Mad, go on, yeah. No, no, I was just going to say, that was like, that little bit after, Rob and I then went and, like, we went and had a little wonder on something that people might not have seen, is that all the players then went and just sort of stood on the pitch with all their families.
1:12:45And Rob and I just kind of like went and chilled. Did you come on the pitch for a bit? After the parade? No, no, no. I was because then we were kind of in but you could see the players were just still so in the zone of like having the best time of their lives like Sonny walked past us didn't he coming back in with Brennan obviously Brennan just kept going back up to the stage didn't he Brennan Johnson just couldn't stop but just how euphoric they were it was like and for Son especially you know it was you know a perfect kind of ending really to his story because had he left and not won something it would have been an absolute travesty it really would if he hadn't won something so So 10 years, got it, captain for it, spot on.
1:13:24Didn't start the game, didn't matter. Didn't matter to him one bit. And as you say, like history, like forever etched. Not that he wouldn't have been anyway, but we can all say like this is a different level. You know, now it's a completely different level. It's, you know, a guy who's like a legend at Spurs, undeniably one of our greatest ever Premier League players. but this is like this is a European trophy winning captain now that's that puts him in a different kind of prestige like for me it's you know it's something else and no less than what he deserves 100 % not a cult hero like a bona fide legend you know he would have always been that guy I mean look we would have always thought of him as a legend but he would have been another player that had that little sort of but there's but there's so much like this there's a lot of nitpicking and consternation as to what a legend is you know and people say why is why is a legend you know why is i'm not gonna start reeling off names of players but why is such and such a legend we should be talking about your blanche flowers your greaves is those sort of things whatever way whatever way you want to class a legend now that's what son is you know and that's that's what that's cemented yeah and unbelievable um lads what have we got coming up anything i saw you uh you uh taking a mickey out of jed spence the other day ben that was a very nice piece of content but it was brilliant and mate honestly i i thought he was gonna slap you at one point i'm not gonna lie so worried with that as well because like jed's got a great sense of humor but also and suffer fools.
1:15:06So when it like, and he was getting more. How long was all the awkward stuff happening for then? Mate, like 10, 15. Jesus Christ. This bit at the beginning when we're trying to like pull it all together. My word, it was just like. You interrupting him, like doing the thing with the sound levels. Was that? Perfect. Perfect. Just, just, just turning the like, do you know what I mean? The tensionometer up a bit. Turn it up to 11. The entire time, my arse cheeks was like. total panic because they're like these guys they're all absolutely lovely we're very lucky they're good really good group but at the same time you're really aware that they're like proper like in terms of their build their like life they're proper alpha you know they're in a group of they're in a group of people that are at the peak of their powers they are the 0.000 not one percent and then you're just there like a couple of oaths being the ones asking the questions you know it's sort of you like i always remember saying this to you before jack when i interviewed mario atoje like you you become totally aware in that moment you're set opposite of man if you chose to could probably kill you if it were the end times do you know i mean if we're back in some sort of like yeah yeah that is you become really aware of the fact that you're quite an inferior sort of physical specimen in comparison to these things.
1:16:30Oh, people like that exist. Okay, well, I guess my apocalypse bunker ideas are pretty much redundant. Yeah, they'll be nice to the geeky lads, right? They might find some use for me. Peeling potatoes or something, I don't know. Forage.
1:16:52Anything else coming out then? Do you know what I mean? On that one? No, but do you know what? we're very lucky the biggest thing i think that the best thing we get to do at the moment is is match days like it's still like i don't know about you rob but i still just absolutely love the home match days are so fun you kind of forget you're working or something at them a little bit because we do just have we've got a great team we just have the best time making the stuff everyone wants to make really great pre-match stuff and do and you know make great stuff for people to watch So, yeah, that's really fun.
1:17:28And then the stuff we do at the training ground is also really, really nice. Like me and Ben just try and get into the weeds as much as we can of how Spurs are playing and stuff like that, which is also like flexing a bit of a different muscle maybe for both of us, trying to do a bit of this tactical stuff and all that. But that's also really fun. So, yeah, we've got some more shows. We've got one this week, haven't we? One this week and one next week. We're going to do a little bit on set pieces this week. Set pieces, yeah. Good fun, because I love the fact that we're now getting into the territory where if Spurs get a throw in, sort of, from about 30 yards out, it's just a vibe, isn't it?
1:18:05Love it. Brilliant. I'm so down. I know that's not champagne super sexy. Like, right, we throw it in and then roll it back to the keeper and start again, play 72 passes, then create a shot on goal. I'm like, no, I love the chaos. Get that ball into the mixer straight away, big Kevin Danso. well mate if you need like voice of the people my day rate is very competitive I'll happily come on to your tactics show and just shout none of this tosh get it in the mixer get it in the mixer knock it down shut up Poindexter get it in the mixer lads it's been an absolute pleasure thank you ever so much for coming on and chatting to me about this to help alleviate some of these international break blues.
1:18:57I hope we haven't waffled too much. I hope that was like actually a half piece of podcast. This is the place for it, mate, if you have noticed that's me not saying that you haven't waffled. Sorry, Jack, to be clear, this is from a man who hosts a podcast that only features himself most of the time. Yeah, exactly. I'll get in the car and go, this dude has been talking about that corner routine for 40 minutes to himself and now he's going on about chips or whatever yeah yeah what was it the other day what was the thing the other day where you sort of like i sent it to you afterwards but you literally you got into a you got into an argument with yourself over something and i just thought because i was talking about the fact that the internet has changed people's minds like altered the way we think about stuff and then i was just basically calling myself like a pretentious twat for going on about it and it was it was it was a good one that one because it felt like because i you know i'd been really tired and i hadn't done it immediately after the game and all this type of stuff so it's come a bit after and it felt like a bit more of one i'd done a few years ago before before i would say it's become a much more polished operation and and it was so good because like there were a number of like newer people i'm guessing newer listeners who were like mate this wasn't like your usual stuff i didn't really like this what are you going on about and a few like the older school like fans all like yes more weird ones yes you know bring back greetings car yeah yeah yeah so yeah but please anyway if that you know please do enjoy my post-match podcast they're great and there's loads of pre-match ones on Patreon as well patreon.com but anyway lads I'm not going to do any more plug-in much love good luck for the rest of the season obviously we were supposed to touch on loads of stuff it just became like a Europa League little thing like four months after we'll get more questions from listeners, I did this too late I'm sorry all will become clear in time but yeah I'll get some more questions, I'll get some more questions from the adoring listeners and I'll put those to you obviously I'll filter out all the awkward ones first, maybe
