In short
Tottenham Hotspur’s recent performances, focusing on (1) Randall Kolo Muani’s broken jaw injury and (2) whether Richarlison should be moved on, plus (3) calls for more Dane Scarlett minutes and (4) criticism of Thomas Frank’s coaching/structure.
Guests
Ollie and “Oliver Lister” (referenced via tweets). Both are Spurs-focused fans/pundit voices, discussing match incidents, tactics, and player roles.
Key claims
- Kolo Muani’s injury (broken jaw) likely rules him out 2 months; his touch and calmness showed Spurs “turning a corner.”
- Richarlison has become ineffective for long stretches, lacks team-player attitude (sulking/crying), and celebrates as if he’s done everything; a goal doesn’t erase “dross.”
- Premier League football needs more than “passengers” who only contribute via late goals.
- Dane Scarlett should get meaningful minutes because fans want energy and because he’s shown promise (e.g., winning a penalty vs FC Copenhagen).
- Thomas Frank’s tactics are overly cautious/overcomplicated: indecision on set pieces, slow build-up, no clear plan to attack through the middle.
Notable examples
- Spurs vs Manchester United: Richarlison’s late goal/celebration; Xavi Simons’ early attacking run with little support.
- FC Copenhagen: Scarlett cameo impact; Kolo Muani glimpses; penalty won quickly after coming on.
- Set-piece/free-kick example: Romero then Van de Ven then Vicario sequence leading to losing possession.

2:42It's just another thing, isn't it? I mean, probably the most infuriating thing is he's the only centre forward we've got who can actually control a football and isn't made of right angles. So, yeah, it's just another one, isn't it? You're just kind of used to it by now. You're just, who's next?
3:05Jack:Well, it's irritating in the respect that Frank spent a lot of the time pre-game talking about the fact that Randall Colomani was needing to get up to speed he was needing to find that sharpness it's the sort of sharpness that will only come with more game time he's not ready to play the full 90 minutes yet blah blah blah blah blah and it suddenly it felt like Copenhagen he was turning a corner I personally feel like he continued that into the Manchester United game some people you know I voiced my displeasure at him being taken off at half time yeah obviously at the time I didn't realize he had a broken jaw so you know I hold my hands up Mr.
3:45Frank I apologize um don't apologize to him but you know I still felt like he
3:53Jack:was a positive contributor to to that game at least I felt like he he seemed to be in sync with a player like Xavi Simmons who we will get on to um but I feel like he is he's definitely a player of a certain quality and although he may not hit the ground running it there are glimpses of it I feel like in the way he moves as you say with his touch in the sort of things he's willing to try and do we saw like that that goal against against Copenhagen cool head under pressure he sort of just seemed to know what to do and the fact that now we've started to see this we've started to see him turn a bit of a corner and he's out is just, is really frustrating, mate.
4:36And it just,
4:37Jack:it just begs the question, when are we, when are we going to get a break? When are, I mean, well, he's, he's literally had a break, but I was getting there before you did. I could, I could see, I could see your face lighting up then at that point. But it is annoying, isn't it? And look, this, this conversation will naturally bleed into Richarlison. How do you feel about him now seemingly leading the light? for the foreseeable future? Terrible. I'm sick of him. I'm sick of the sight of him. I think as a collective fan base, we've all had a lot of patience and at times quite a lot of affection for Richarlison.
5:19But my opinion on him is I've done a 180 and I can't stand him. Not only is he...
5:27Jack:You didn't like his shirt off? histrionics, did you? No, it really pissed me off. Because it's just like he seems to be like he seems so kind of wrapped up in himself. I don't think he's much of a team player. I understand he's talked about struggles that he's had with his mental health and all that. That's fine. But I just feel like that doesn't give you a reason to be like a crybaby on the pitch every five minutes. And he just goes, he just looks like he's sulking half the time and things aren't going his way. And then like, you know, he contributes something in a team game, which let's be honest, that goal, I haven't, I've been too annoyed to even watch it back.
6:18So I don't know if like, Odabé's shot was going in regardless of whether he took a touch on it.
6:24Jack:Hard to say, hard to say, I think. Hard to say, okay. Anyway, it's not like, even with that, he was abject. He was appalling, that game. Just utterly dreadful. And he has been for a long time. And he walks around moping all the time. And then he basically gets hit by a ball and acts like he's won the European Cup. And taking his shirt off and just going over the top. I was like, you should be going over to Odomair, who's basically helped turn that game around. And instead you're lying on the floor, overcome and overroar. It's just like, I just, I just, it's, it's just, it's all about him, not the team.
7:12And I just don't think he's a team player. And not only is he even a team player, he's also a bad player. And those two things combined just mean I've completely lost all patience with him. and I just spent I was there on Saturday and I spent most of my time just like screaming blue murder at him because it was just everything he did was just pathetic and annoying and then he does that
7:35Jack:I'll read your Heat at the Moment tweet back to you at Oliver Lister not the biggest issue but Richarlison celebrating like that when he sneak thieved a goal doesn't scream team player he should be rushing to Oliver I'm sick of his me, me, me attitude as I am his dog shit performances. Get rid immediately. And I just want to pick up on the get rid element of this because I posited in one of my many pub philosophical moments on Twitter, on the platform known now as X, that the problem with Richarlison is that he is, despite all the conversation we're having here, a player who is still of a certain quality he has enough qualities and he has enough experience whereby he will always be a tempting option for any manager to play and I likened it to Pierre-Emil Hojbjerg before him who I see as a similarly frustrating player in so much as they're both they're both kind of annoying in the respect that they're both players who are on the cusp of actually being quite good players but the things that they do that stop them from being really good players are really really irritating um and i feel like like my my sort of the the point i've gotten to river charlison is that i've seen everything i'm going to see from him i've seen the five six games a season he has where he actually suddenly looks like a really good player and you're like, maybe we should give him more of a chance.
9:10Jack:Because that's just always, always underpinned by 20 plus games of sheer dross and performances like that at the weekend where, you know, I was digging him out during the game. And then obviously when he scored, there's naturally a bit of a, ah, maybe you need to learn to shut up. And it's like, I don't think him scoring a goal, which we know he is capable of doing, really invalidates the fact that he's been largely ineffective perspective for an entire game of football um and i just a game of football this will be going off every time he plays lately and i i don't i'm not so certain anymore that football is in a place you know we have these conversations about brennan johnson and if richarlison is going to be another one of these players that falls into this place of well he doesn't do anything for a game but he scores and that's the important thing i i just i don't really feel like that's the gotcha that people think it is anymore i don't think i don't think the way football is now especially the premier league i don't think there is there's room for passengers anymore i don't think you can have a player that you know does nothing all game and then just scores again scores a goal towards the end because invariably speaking it's under it's it's undermining the entire team's performance and you know had we won that manchester united had we won that game against man united we'd all be buzzing it would be great but i think we would also all be sat here saying we probably got a bit lucky we probably nabbed that one i think a draw was a fair reflection of the match both teams are not very good in my opinion at least they are then probably not where they want to be let's let's put it that if we're going to put it more favorably and you would argue that had we a better player up front even maybe dominic solanke up front spurs could have actually you may be taking advantage of what was a fairly poor Manchester United team, as opposed to having to rely on sneaking a goal right at the end, like you say, that might have gone in anyway.
11:09Jack:Odeberg might have scored it. I do think you're being, I'm just saying, I do think you're being a little uncharitable towards Richarlison and that finish. I think it was, whether it was going in or not, it was a deft touch, I would say. It hit him. and you know when I saw because I was in the ground and I was like we were quite we were at that end and he ran over towards us I was like why is he taking his shirt off because I honestly didn't see it and then I thought oh my god he scored and my first thought was it's going to get ruled out for offside he's going to come back from an offside position and the goal won't stand and he'll have ruined it so it was kind of like even then when I'm here to be celebrating I was really I don't think I am being uncharitable personally so so but yeah it's just the thing is it's like you know going back to what you're saying about oh he does nothing but scores like you can't have a team of people who just do nothing but such you know and his inability to to largely the basics like win a header actually means we as a team struggle more because we lose the ball.
12:25We've got enough problems keeping hold of it as it is. Win a fucking header. Make a pass. Don't run into a blind alley. Everything he does, it just seems like he hasn't got a clue. And you are right. He is obviously a talented player to be where he is. We wouldn't have bought him in the first place if he had no ability. But when he chooses to use that ability, kind of seems to kind of you just never know when it's coming and he doesn't really seem to do anything else when he's when he's in one of his funks and I do I know it seems like I'm like getting into body language experts and all of that but it's just like I do just look at him and he just looks like he's like sulking half the time just going around the pitch feeling sorry for himself and I think if that's the attitude he's bringing then everyone around is just going to bring everyone else down and you're not going to perform well if all you're doing and going oh this isn't fair just thinking life's too difficult for him just had enough
13:34Jack:so the question now is is it time for Dane Scarlett well he can't be any worse could he I mean just give him a go I refuse to believe it could be to be honest just give him a chance and if he is then at least we'll have found out but I mean Dave Scarlett's probably going to have to play some minutes anyway soon because he'll probably be playing against PSG because Richarlison is going to be needed now because of Mouane being out Tell obviously can't play so yeah I think we'll be seeing more of Scarlett quite soon I mean the thing about Tell is I'm not convinced Tell's an out-and-out number nine at least not in the Premier League I mean his goal his goal was beautiful lovely instinctive in the moment more of that please Mathis like and I kind of feel that with Tell because the sort of the initial clamouring for him has died down a bit a lot of the conversation around him has died down a bit there's a lot less pressure on him there's a lot less expectation so I'm hoping to see a bit more of that from him because I think he's a talented I quite like Mathis Tell you can obviously see it there I think in a different team team where say he's a sort of in a different team where he was running through on goal rather than playing with his back to goal I think he could be like a number nine you know like a kind of Ollie Watkins sort you know who's not really going to like win your headers and hold the ball up I was going to say so shite so shite he's shitting sports Arsenal but you know that sort of player playing on the shoulder I think he could be like an effective striker like that but in this long ball dirge that we have to put up with it's not going to work for him but like you said you saw it at the weekend it was a really lovely touch you know engineers the space like and then hits first time shot and it's a really smooth movement you know two players around him gets a shot away scores you know and it's a great that's what you want to see from him and that's obviously what he can do but you know what we're asking of our strikers is what he can't do really he's not got the build for it he's just not that sort of player you know we wouldn't ask Brendan Johnson to you know play with his back to goal and try and win headers against six foot four centre-halves and you know we shouldn't be asking Mattis Tell either the thing with Scarlett back to him is that sometimes I feel like managers right they I know they've got a job to do and I know there's all that crap about they're on the training ground and fans don't know anything and blah blah blah but football is an emotional game right and there is obviously there's a sense of like there's like a what should we say like a physical momentum a technical momentum the way the football team is playing and there's also sort of there is a sense of emotional momentum that does bleed through from the stands and i think when somebody like frank when you have vicario as well i'm not going to i'm not going to use language as charged as calling out the fans but tacitly doing so and i think i think that is a fair characterization of the situation you know it's it's what three four press conferences in a row now where frank has mentioned needing energy from the stands and stuff i think what a lot of managers and i think maybe let's just talk about frank in general now i think one of the things that he really needs to sort of just get a handle on for me anyway because i i still quite like him i'm not frank out or anything like that um i still quite like him as a bloke but i think if you want that energy from the fans you need to give them a bit back And right now, whether or not you don't feel like he is 100 % ready or not to lead the line for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, the fans clearly want to see Dane Scarlett.
17:46Jack:Like, this seems to be an overwhelming... I just did a rando tweet saying, it's time, with a picture of Dane Scarlett when he was a kid with Gareth Bale. And it's absolutely banged on Twitter. like it's one of those annoying things where when i actually think about a joke two likes and when i just put out something like when i'm sat on the sofa watching frankenstein on netflix on the weekend that that tends to do all right but but what that says to me is that people just people people want to feel something for this team a bit i think that that's kind of one of the things that that's characterizes frank stuff yeah the results are doing all right we can we can look at this kind of on a spreadsheet basis and say, well, we finished 17th last year.
18:26Jack:We're actually doing okay. We're unbeaten in the Champions League. We're still within touch and distance of like, you know, the top five in the Premier League. We're actually doing okay, considering the injuries and everything that's happening. But still, I think we can all say that people aren't buzzing to watch Spurs this season. People aren't really looking forward to sort of what it is that Thomas Frank's doing. If anything, people are already pretty bored of the football that he's putting on display. So if you want that energy from the stands, if you want that energy from the fans, there's a really easy win to be had here.
19:01Jack:And that is give the academy lad more minutes because he showed against FC Copenhagen the other day. He won a penalty within seconds, a couple of minutes of coming onto the pitch with a really nicely sort of slalom little run into the box. that okay the opposition needs to be considered i understand that but again like i say just give the kids some minutes and the the thing is i guarantee you that if i i personally think fans are fair enough to say that if he is given meaningful minutes and we do get a greater sample size of him playing in the premier league against grown men like you say these six foot two center backs that are big burly fellas you harry maguire types right if you do see more and more of him playing against him and you realise actually he's not up to it, fans will get back in their box.
19:52Jack:Fans will extend him the courtesy, I think, as a manager to say, all right, fair enough. That's why he hasn't been playing him. But right now, when you're having to sit there and watch a player like Richarlison doing what he's doing, it almost feels, and again, I know this is quite dramatic language, it feels almost inexcusable, you know? Do you get what I'm saying? I do. and you know you touched on a lot of things around the atmosphere oh yeah just quickly on it because they obviously they've obviously got a bee in their bonnet about this because it keeps on coming up they're not like calling out the fans like outright but there's always a reference to it oh you know whether it's about just giving a bit back or you know with the fans behind us and all that and you know what the crowd was good on Saturday and And obviously it wasn't jumping because everyone there was having to watch it.
20:48You know, they gave nothing back. So if they're not going to give anything back in terms of like basics, such as like passing to another player on the same team, maybe, you know, bringing on someone like Dane Scarlett could at least kind of give a bit of enthusiasm. When the ball comes to him, you know, there might be a bit of anticipation. or expectation or excitement just to see what this kid who's been around the first team for a few years but not really given a decent crack at things might actually do something. And you might get, you know, from that, you know, like you said, a reaction from the crowd.
21:30But we're not seeing that. And you have to wonder, is like, how bad does Richarlison have to be in order for, you know, from what we've seen so far pretty promising cameos here and there from Scarlett, admittedly there's a very small sample size but he's done alright whenever he's played he's not looked terrible but he's never really given an opportunity in a proper game he could have played against Newcastle there are Premier League games where he could have come on but it's all just he doesn't seem to be in the thinking and it was really, I get the feeling with him coming on about Copenhagen, it was more a case of Frank wanting to keep players fresh rather than try and see if Scarlett could do something.
22:22So, I think it could contribute to the atmosphere and they give money about it, so why not do it?
22:30Jack:Let's dive into this because, you know, you were, in no uncertain terms, quite unhappy with Thomas Frank after that game. I mean, how long has this been brewing for you?
24:36Jack:And where are you at now? Because, you know, a couple of days since the games, games past that emotional sort of acuity. Is that, can we say that an acute point of emotion? It's acute. Yeah, let's just go with it. Let's say that, let's say that. It's not clever, don't you? The English language is malleable, you know, let's just go with that. look basically you said Frank out after the game I'm going to hold you to account you wanted him gone how long have you felt that way why do you feel that way do you still feel that way were you just being a big bag of emotions after a football match I mean
25:09yes and no I think like Frank out there is nothing the home performances this season have been abysmal and I mean abysmal.
25:22Jack:They haven't been that good, mate. But it's just there is nothing there. And it's not... I understand that when we've got injuries and a pretty average forward line. That's all true. And that's not going to help. But when I see things like we're going to go and take a free kick. They're offside. This happened in the match, right? We had... They were offside. so we're going to take a free kick kind of deep in our own half. Romero walks over to the ball, looks to take it. Then he decides, actually, no. Van der Ven, you come and take it. So then Van der Ven walks over to the table. Just bearing in mind, this is just a free kick, like, deep in our half.
26:06They've all dropped back. So we spend a bit of time. And then we, Van der Ven then takes a free kick. And he goes back to Vicario, who then kicks it long and we lose the ball. and it's just like why did it have to go why was there indecision about what's going on and we see it time and again with this team at the moment like we see it with the goal kicks where they're like we'll have three players in the box Kiefer and Van Venn and Romero and it's kind of like oh who's doing what and it reminds me in a way of Conte in that And the way in so much is that everything, I think there is just this kind of like over-complification of things.
26:54And everything is part of a set play almost or part of a routine. And it's almost to the point that people aren't given the license to just actually take a goal kick, take a quick free kick, just play the ball. No, no, it's got to be this. if it's in this certain part of the pitch, it's got to be this person. And the result is everything just slows down so much that by the time we go to take a free kick or a throw in, the opposition is set. So, okay, say for instance then in another situation, we take a free kick or a throw in, and we actually manage to keep hold of the ball more than beyond two passes.
27:40There seems to be no idea about what we're going to do. So yes, we don't have our creative players are short supplies. Xavi's still coming and getting up to speed and our attackers aren't good. But there's no build-up. And I'm talking about kind of players kind of knowing where to pass. It seems like every pass we're making is, oh my God, who can I find? And they just pass to that player. And then they're going, oh my God, who can I find? And so often we just, you just see us and we're just playing towards our own goal. We're trying to keep the ball, but we're moving the wrong way up the pitch.
28:18And so I just don't see any kind of structure or plan about how are we going to try and score goals. And the only semblance of a plan is if we get in a wide position, and this generally seems to happen by chance rather than design, it will be, well, I'm out wide, so I better just try and cross it. It doesn't seem to be towards anyone. It doesn't really seem to be any structure. We never seem to kind of work a wide player into space. There doesn't seem to really build up to kind of get him away from an opponent so that they can then make a specific ball, a specific play to find someone in the box.
28:59It is very much, I'm just going to hit it. And what we see is that we get out wide and then we're just smashing it into defenders because we haven't worked any space and they're basically being marked. and it's all again just like this continued panic around like i've just got to do something and then finally so i know i'm going off on it it's like how many fucking touches do our players need to take before they pass the ball which for me is the biggest indication that they haven't got a clue what they're doing it's like four or five touches pass four or five touches pass usually going backwards and that to me just seems like this team doesn't know what to do and I appreciate they haven't got the best players but not a very good team but there are lesser teams that can have a pattern or an idea about what kind of football they're trying to play and I've just seen nothing and it's just got worse and that's why I'm kind of like it's not that I dislike Frank it's just not working and it's so clearly not going to work it's just Nudo again Do you feel that?
30:02Jack:Do you think it's that pronounced that it's Nuno. By that, are we saying he's a manager that is in principle a decent manager, but he's just not fit for the level that Tottenham Hotspur want to be at?
30:19I think there's part of that. I do believe Frank is a very cautious manager. I don't think he's backed himself to take the step up, to take the kind of psychological leap that I'm not managing Brentford anymore. I am managing Tottenham. I need to be a bit bolder. This is a team that demands more. I don't have the comfort of being able to put in some draft performances because we're Brentford. This is Tottenham. It's a different situation. I feel
30:56perhaps, even if he doesn't show it, because he's quite a composed guy, I like him as a individual. He comes across really well. But I think he's a little overwhelmed by it all. And I feel like his response to that is not panic, it's over caution. And so everything he does is around kind of like not taking risks, where actually that's the thing he needs to be doing. You know, when he first joined, he said like, I might be misquoting it, or I might be misattributing it, but I'm pretty sure it was like, not taking a risk is the biggest risk, or something along those lines. But that's exactly what he's doing.

31:34And it's just kind of like, if he's not learned now, if the reactions and the performances to the home performances, especially, if that's not, if the penny hasn't dropped yet, then he's on borrowed time, regardless of whether I think he should go or not.
31:50Jack:Let's just say, going into that, I would say, look, we've seen, let's just say, if we're saying that he's not learning anything, let's just say, let's just say, Can I say, let's just say any more times? Please do. He's dropped the double pivot of catastrophe, which is Polinia and Bentancur. He seemingly does have taken on board that many people are unhappy with that. You wonder, I always wonder, I always wonder how much this stuff works out, how much, because he says, and another thing he's sort of referenced a few times is he's ignoring pundits. He doesn't listen to social media. He's not involved in social media, blah blah blah blah like you know there's there's bits and pieces like that but i wonder if there are people at the club if somebody even as high up as vin i is just you know when he has a little chat with him says so you know a lot of people aren't particularly happy with you starting those two or not i'm all i'm always i'm just always interested to know with football clubs in general how this stuff works out but let's just say you know maybe he's informed enough and you would hope that he is as a Premier League football manager, regardless of the level that we think he's capable of, that he would see that Polini and Bentenka simply is a dead end for Tottenham attacking any football matches.
33:06Jack:So if we can say that he has learned from that, and I personally feel that the Manchester United game in spells was much more positive than we've seen in previous weeks. FC Copenhagen very much so, but again, And with all due respect, I think they are probably a mid-table championship side in terms of their quality. So we should be battering them. And we did. So fair enough. But I feel like the Manchester United game, there was more expression there. Xavi Siemens was playing more centrally. He was getting involved in stuff. I know people are pointing out the fact that we only scored our two goals after he came off.
33:46Jack:but is that more to do with the fact we had the balance of Wilson Odeberg playing out on the left again, like an actual left-hand sided player playing on the left. Imagine that. So, I mean, where I am, because I do, I do get a lot of what you're saying and I do take a lot of that on board. I just think where I am at with it now is I don't think definitively I can say this is all on Frank or this is all on the players. I do think Frank can be doing a lot of things better. I do think he can be more positive and should be more positive. And as I've sort of said on here plenty of times, I do think there are certain little moments where the mask slips with him, notably in the pre-match presser against Manchester United when he spent, to be fair, he was asked a question about what to expect from Manchester United.
34:39Jack:But his response to that question was essentially, they've got loads of dangerous attackers. we're working on how we're going to close them down how we're going to stop them from doing what they do and then in a sort of awkward moment he kind of caught himself and said oh yeah and uh we're also obviously gonna try and get them on the back foot by pressing a bit and it just it just it wasn't convincing you know this is the whole thing about him being overwhelmed by it isn't it yeah yeah you know because like when when he was at brentford basically any team going to play at Brentford was going to be a bigger team because they're a small club.
35:13They're Kew Gardens FC.
35:16Jack:Nothing wrong with Kew Gardens, mate. Nice place for a bit of coffee and cake. It's lovely. I've got membership.
35:26That sort of response is what you would expect from a manager of Brentford. But it shouldn't even have to be told that you're the top manager now. if he's asked about what to think about Man United you just flip it around and go well you should be asking Man United what they're going to think about us easy, done everyone's happy but instead he gets drawn into like kind of glorifying and like monsterising these players and United are shit let's be honest, United are rubbish I know you saw it was better and yes compared to the Chelsea performance it was compared to the Wolves I mean, the Wolves gave, fuck me.
36:07That was something rotten. It's a terrible, terrible performance. So yes, it was marginally better than that, but let's not kid ourselves into thinking it was good. You know, it just seems like there was one point in the first half, and I think the clip's done the rounds, because my head exploded. Like, Xavi's kind of made this run. He's managed to slip his man, and he's running through towards goal. and there's not a single player trying to keep Xavi's not lightning quick players should be like sprinting to like join him in attack no one comes he's literally just he's looking around and there's like six, seven United players around him so he's got no choice he manages to hold onto the ball despite getting tackled eventually a few of our players decide to jog up and see what's going on and then they just stand there they don't move a muscle They just stood like in a line, not doing anything.
37:06And it's like, again, I'm just going back to my previous point. It's like they don't have a plan of attack. So Xavi finding his feet a bit, I think it's more to do with him kind of adjusting to this pace of the physicality of the league more than it has anything to do with like Frank has like started to realise how we can get him more involved in games. He's decent, isn't he?
37:32Jack:Do you like him, Xavi Simmonds? Pardon? Do you like Xavi Simmonds? He's decent for my money. Yeah, I think he's got real potential. I like the sort of player he is. He's not like a Luka Modric type of player in many respects, but he does that thing that I really like, that Modric is where he's kind of like, without moving the ball, he does this kind of body feign and manages to like... It's the drop of the shoulder, isn't it? Yeah, but it's not quite, it's not a very pronounced one. It's very faint and it just kind of gives him a split second to like kind of wrong foot the opponent and then slip away.
38:11Jack:I do think there are comparisons to be made with Luka Modric there, the way he moves. Very wrong footed. Well, yeah, but it is mostly in his movement, his sort of body shape and things like that. And then obviously, you know, the narrative around his sort of Spurs career leans into that. But I do like him. I think he's definitely a player there. You can see that he's got bags of talent. But if we've got... I just felt like he was getting frustrated at many points during the game. I felt like... It felt to me that many of the players around him just quite simply weren't on the same page as him.
38:48Jack:I mean, Brennan Johnson, look, again, you always have to caveat this with God bless him and all that type of stuff, the Europa League final. But, you know, the lad is, he's, he's, he's championship mate. I'm sorry. Like I really do feel that about him. He's, is that harsh, you know, but I just, but he's not very good. No. And when I look at Xavi Siemens, I do think there's intent there. And I feel that we will see, we will see. look I'm not going to make any bold prediction I'm not going to say we will see this but I am very interested to see the sort of performances and the sort of end product he has when he has when he looks to his right or left and he's got Kulusevsky and Kudus there in front of him when he's got Dominic Solanke right in front of him or you know whoever else we maybe sign if we sign a top draw strike and sit in front of him he's dead that's kind of how it feels a bit doesn't it You know, he's not even on grass.
39:52Jack:It's a huge cover-up. That's the big Thomas Frank test. Or is it like Paul McCartney and all that? We're going to suddenly... Yeah. Spottings of Elvis and Dominic Solanke. No, wait. No, it was Paul McCartney, wasn't it? Paul McCartney is apparently... Is it Paul McCartney who's a clone? Or a body double? Avril Lavigne? There's a really good podcast series about that, actually, about Avril Lavigne's body double. but um i think it's paul mccartney who people say that has a body there's a lot of these sort of conspiracy theories um and you should be wary of them jack well you know that's just that's just what you would say isn't it as one of the sheeple you you sit there in your you know in your in your in your nice little whatever i can't bother to go on about that um Jaupelinha still dividing people, still dividing fans.
40:47Jack:I quite like him still. I do. I think we need a player like him. It could be one of those tires over arguments, hasn't it? We just, we absolutely need a player with his skillset in the side. We do. I just don't, I don't understand how there could be, look, yes, exactly. We need someone who can like stop attacks and make tackles. We've needed someone like that for years. Do we need that person to be playing every game? No, that's it. In certain fixtures, say our next Premier League fixture away at Arsenal, I think we might need someone who can put their foot in the midfield. Just a thought. That's quite a bold call.
41:25Jack:That's quite a bold call. Why am I saying it like that? Bold call. There we go. Yeah, well, you know, I'm not afraid to say what people are. That's undergarbled. Anyway, so yes, in certain games, we really need someone who can go around and kick people up the arse. In other games, we might need someone with a little more finesse, even though actually I think he's not as bad as people make out. I think it's massively overstated, man. I think there's so much confirmation bias at play. And yeah, I get it. Is he our second top scorer as well? I don't know, but... I think he's got four goals. I think he might be our second highest scorer.
42:03Jack:The comparison that's always going to be made, and I see people make it without any shred of like awareness really on Twitter constantly is, well, he's not Caicedo and he's not Rodri. And you're like, well, yeah, but isn't there a reason why those two players are like 150 million pound footballers? But also, only two teams have those players. World would have them. This is it, right? What's the drop down from that? There are other Rodri's going around that we haven't found out about. Well, I mean, the drop down from that is Declan Rice, who was£100 million. I'm not just saying it because of Arsenal, blah, blah, all that sort of thing.
42:41Jack:I don't think he's quite on that level of like a Rodri. You can't have a man with – he's got a granny's haircut as well. And they're not exactly the same type of player, but I would say they fulfil a similar function. But yeah, he is a very good player. I agree with that. But that's still a£100 million player. We're talking about Jao Polini being somebody that we can get for 20-something mil, who at the moment is still only on loan. Is still only on loan and does a job that, as you say, we have needed. I get that he's not maybe like the ideal solution, but when you take him out the side, it was a free-for-all against us last year.
43:21Jack:And we were constantly complaining about the fact that Van de Ven and Romero had nobody screening them. Nobody screening them for midfield. now we have somebody doing that we're complaining about the fact that he's not playing Kevin De Bruyne or Esparse's I think it's it's surely there has to be a an acceptance that there's baby steps here and I get it I'm not I'm not a scout I don't have a a network of people out there that can feed me players are playing in the Bundesliga or whatever that could be doing this job that Rodri or Casado is doing great if those players exist then hopefully Spurs will pick them up But for now, I think one of the things that we really don't need to be kicking off about is the fact that we've got a guy who has come to the Premier League and is doing an all right job, really.
44:10Jack:And I think when we've seen him and Benton Kerr not playing together, I think the Spurs are capable of knocking the ball about quite nicely. I just, I just, I don't, I don't believe it all rests on the fact that we have Jaupelina in the midfield playing sideways passes. No. They say you can tell a lot about a person by the contents of their freezer. So what does a bottle of Jägermeister say? It says you have standards. You don't cut corners. And you like your Jägermeister shots the way they're meant to be enjoyed. Ice cold. As for the frozen taquitos and mystery leftovers, we'll keep that between us.
44:47Jack:Drink it cold or don't drink it at all. Jägermeister. Damn, that's cold. Drink responsibly. Jägermeister liqueur, 35 % alcohol by volume. Yeah, I think I would look more towards the standard of coaching that they're being put through than anything.
46:13We get it, mate.
46:14Jack:You hate Thomas Frank. Obviously, we also have a lot of shit players. That is the truth. We also have a lot of players that are very similar. Our midfield is very much kind of ball-carrying, box-to-box type. The technical standards in our team are through the floor. That's why when Mawani did that brilliant piece of control the other week against Copenhagen, we haven't seen anyone control a ball like that for fucking ages. we was like what the fuck is that speak for yourself speak for yourself I do that down goals every week yeah if you're kidding your arm that's it and a fag on that's it have a pint at half time you know what I mean yeah but do you know what I mean like we were kind of it looked and that's why like players are kudos you know we might never see him again now as soon as the way things go just a knock mate we're bringing these players that have like just a knock yeah but we're bringing these players that have like a degree of like technical competence and we're like whoa like because we haven't seen anything like that you know there are certain players that you know not every player has to be like that like take Sartre I know you're a big fan of Sartre I'm a big fan of Sartre and he has like so many great qualities but he's not uh I wouldn't say he's like the most technically gifted player in our team he's great I love him to bits but I wouldn't say that he's bloody better he's bloody Just keep the positive vibes about Pac-Mata.
47:47I've got nothing but positive vibes about Pac-Mata. Don't worry. But we have a lot of those players. Even Bergbrau, who I think is probably more technical, he's still a bit more up and about, a bit more physical and imposing than someone like Xavi. You can see the difference in their skill set. And so as a result, we have all these players that are good at the wrong thing. So it's not really a little only wonder that we can't pass. So yes, Palli isn't like Yoga Benito in it over to all over the pitch. But neither are any of our other players because they're not that sort of player. And the couple we do have are either their knees are falling off or their jaws are broken or there's only one of them.
48:41and it's just like this is why we're so kind of one of the reasons is that we're so rubbish really we're rubbish and we're boring to watch and I'm sick I'm sick of it Jack
48:54Jack:you sure then who comes in who do you want as manager I don't know I mean I'm not because you know when I was saying pay me millions of pounds a year and I'll go and find out who I need to manage but I go to Iriola I know they lost 4-0 to Villa yesterday but like he's done alright he looks like he knows well you're just saying that because he looks a bit like Pochettino that's what that's why I was saying it be honest that's why I was saying it you know in the first place I was like he looks he looks sort of like a Pez Pochettino doesn't he so let's get him in do you know what I mean he's got he's got one of them names do you know what I mean Spanish-y name yeah go on exactly let's have him in Tony Tafas get him in exactly exactly because I sort of I'd spoken about Oliver Glasner.
49:40Jack:I was like, oh, you know, if we had a chance to get Oliver Glasner, we should take him. And it was pointed out to me that Oliver Glasner plays football really much like Thomas Frank does. It's apparently remarkably similar. I think Glasner's a really good manager. And I think Frank's probably a good manager, but it's like, that's not the sort of manager that's ever going to thrive at Tottenham. And then, you know, unless, you know, Frank just needs to buck his ideas up, and teach them how to pass the ball and just, you know, not rely on set pieces. Actually, like, OK, guys, maybe, you know, we could play through the middle a bit.
50:16Because that was the irritating thing about Saturday, actually. Like, where United were, like, the most open and most vulnerable was through the middle of the park. You know, they've got, you know, playing the wing-backs, three at the back. That leaves Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes basically marshalling the centre of the pitch. Now, they're both good players, but I personally feel a good team might be able to play through that midfield too we did not even try to do that and why not? We should be capable of doing that. Players should be able to pass forward to a player in space but no and then it obviously all breaks down because Charleston fucking falls over and Johnson can't be found because he's hiding and someone's probably dead
51:04Jack:it's uh it's quite funny isn't it though to see manchester united a team that used to win trebles a team that used to you know feel that emboldened enough to call their stadium the theater of dreams which to me has always been a bit naff um now going potty losing their minds because they've managed to nab a uh a 2-2 draw away at little old tottenham little old tottenham who they haven't beaten since 2021. How the mighty have fallen. I didn't say that the other day. I couldn't believe it. Yeah, I think it's been that long. Was it the New York game? I might just be spreading fake news, but I think Cristiano Ronaldo scored the last winner against Spurs.
51:44Jack:That's a nice thought. So, you know, it's a delict shushing us, cupping his ears, all that type of stuff, mate. What are you doing, mate? Bobbitt's player as well. We broke you. We literally broke you as a player. Yeah. you know you would like the most promising young centre back in Europe until that Ajax game and big bad Lucas Moura look where you are now big bad Lucas Moura with all his problematic tweets came and got you didn't he yeah I don't know do you like international breaks Oli are you looking forward to this no actually I'm not I like football I like watching Tottenham I don't even know England are playing Albania and someone I'm not sure cool well that sounds cracking it seems to be every time I watch an England game we're playing against Albania or Slovenia you know yeah is that a gammon thing I don't know I enjoy I mean yeah I mean it's all all over there war torn Europe let's call it that we I like obviously international tournaments because it's like football's on every day and it's good fun but this shit because fuck I just put top of the back on the funny thing is this year and this to me is kind of a sign of where our squad is at, obviously I don't want to see us get any more injuries or anything but every time we used to go into an international break I'd be like please, please don't let Harry Kane get injured, please don't let Sonja Min get injured, I mean to be fair I'm saying this out loud, Mickey Van Der Ven, I'm always terrified of him pinging a hamstring so but I don't know how often he plays or not for Holland is he a mainstay in the Holland team I kind of feel like he's I think he plays left back still in and out of it which is even more concerning yeah it is a bit concerning so other than Mickey van der Ven Christian Romero is already down I don't know how bad his injury is going to be he obviously limped off against he's gone hasn't he's gone on international GE well of course he's always going to do that isn't he but whether or not he plays I don't know but he's a captain yeah but it doesn't mean he's going to play does it I don't know he will of course he's going to play of course he's going to play He probably went down half-time because he thought, yeah, I need to, you know, vamos Malvinas and all that.
54:00Jack:Do you know what I mean? He's, yeah. My point is… We don't have any players that kind of like… Well, exactly. You know, we've got Arsenal straight after this international break. And look, we've got two weeks without Spurs. And it feels like great. We've got two weeks waiting for the worst possible thing to happen. I'm still kind of hopeful we can nab something there. but I'm sort of less hopeful as Tom goes on. At this rate, you're going to be able to field a bloody team. You know, I was on Twitter earlier, Tom Foyne. You? You were on Twitter, were you? Yeah, it's a cool website, actually. And he retweeted the club's tweet about Solanke being injured.
54:53I think it was the pre-season game he misses it with a minor ankle injury that was July
55:02and like they can't even say if he's going to play this year they're like and so you know I look at the Arsenal game it's like well Mouani's obviously not going to be fit Richarlison he'll just get they'll eat him alive tell they'll eat him alive I don't think there's a part of me where I allow my imagination to run wild I think yeah maybe you know what we could just shithouse it but then there's another part of me
55:33Jack:I do kind of feel that to a degree I'm just saying I do kind of feel like that could be a thing I do also think it could be a thing that we go there and not even have a shot and get turned over 3-0 because I just think whenever we come in contact at the moment with any degree of competency and a little bit of pressure we get we just get fouled out well you know who what's been the one game this season you looked at and thought yeah actually we we were really good I mean the city way stands out but they they were losing to everyone at that point and they were not in a good way they were certainly not playing like they are at the moment and I do kind of feel like City doesn't really count because we do that to them anyway and they were shit at the time I you know we've had some kind away fixtures I know the away form has been good and it's certainly not to be sniffed at but even still you know Everton it wasn't a 3-0 margin of victory obviously it was we didn't play good enough to win 3-0 Leeds was probably the best of the bunch and even that wasn't exactly Leeds was decent Everton was alright it was alright it was alright but we rode our luck a bit because you know and on another day a team does score quite a few goals against us but isn't the Premier League just really hard there I'm in a bad place Jack I was going to say it does feel that way I mean isn't the Premier League just really difficult though couldn't that be argued there's loads of really good teams basically every team is really good Yeah, but I want us to be really good, but we're not really good.
57:20All the other teams are getting really good.
57:22Jack:I say this with Phil all the time, man. It's just like, remember when it was like peak Pochettino and we were just slapping teams left, right and centre. We were going into games against the best teams in the country thinking we can go toe-to-toe with anyone. Anyone is scared of us. I would go into those fixtures, you know, especially the last couple of seasons at the lane and you'd be like, I reckon three, four goals today. Easy. And now we're going to fixtures thinking three, four passes. Like the standards have just completely and it's not it's not all frank. This is a That is Daniel Levy, mate.
58:01Jack:That is Levy. That is the way the club's been run for. It's Levy, but it's yeah. But then, you know, you had that it was a cow that podcast that you had on the other week and he was going through the goals that players have scored and it I tell you what that fucking it really stuck with me because it was like I haven't stopped thinking about it because it was like at best our best player that we've signed is like nine goals a season and we've given the bloke who signed all this lot a bloody promotion and it's like oh my god like it is just like this acceptance of like I don't know if it's just like it'll be fine Everyone's like, because things were good for so long, or, you know, they were fine for so long, that we'll just carry on and it'll all be good.
58:52And we've just, like, stacked, we've spent loads of money on just, like, the biggest load of shit ever. It's like Ratners. And now we have just this squad of, like, maybe not even average players. Like, there were just some very poor players. there are some good ones but there are some really poor ones and like in terms of attack and midfield you could just get rid of the whole all of them and do better well
59:30Jack:good news about the Dortmund tickets going down to category B yeah
59:38yeah
59:38Jack:maybe you know again though you say that but it's like I'm pretty sure the Copenhagen seats were like category C or B. People just don't want to turn up and watch it anymore. Well, it's expensive, mate. It's expensive. Everyone's skinned. It's expensive. Why haven't the club got in the memo? Why have you just been in stagnation for, what, 10 years now? You know, everyone is skinned. Everyone is skinned. But Tottenham aren't. Tottenham are very much not skinned. And they're taking everybody whose money is skinned. They're taking their money and they're making them be miserable by making them watch Boggdon football.
1:00:19And people just think, I just go there whenever I go. We share a season ticket. I just go there. And I'm just angry at it now. I used to go there. I used to be excited. I was at the Wolves game before. And when we equalised, I was just pissed off. I was pissed off because we'd snatched a draw. because we were so bad. We were so bad. We didn't deserve anything. I thought, now you're going to feel like you've earned something. You've not earned anything. You're not going to learn your lesson. And they didn't learn their lesson, and I'm sick of them.
1:00:52Jack:Well, you've certainly not had your Weetabix this morning, have you, Oliver? I'm not even sponsored by them, and I'm giving them a plug, even with their brand. But, well, I hope you've at least found this cathartic. Is there anything else you want to talk about? Anything else you want to moan about? Fucking loads of stuff. I should do some work. Yeah. From the publisher
Jack is joined by Oly to reflect on Tottenham’s weekend performance against Manchester United. They discuss Randal Kolo Muani’s frustrating injury just as he was starting to find form, and ask whether Richarlison’s time at Spurs should finally be up despite his goal.
With fans calling for academy striker Dane Scarlett to be given a real chance, the pair debate whether it’s time to throw him in and see if he’s truly cut out for the Premier League.
The conversation then turns to Thomas Frank. Is he really the right man to lead this project forward, or have we already seen enough to suggest that he quite simply isn't up to it?
Theme is Ghost Cat by Gillen.
