1:46Jack:Hello everybody, welcome back to Rule the Roost podcast. Billy T, no game this weekend. Did you enjoy the respite from Tottenham Hotspur Football Club or was it merely a weekend of you being consumed by the threat of relegation? Every waking, sleeping moment of your existence. World War III is on top of us. Cost of living, all this type of stuff. Tottenham Hotspur, though, they had to do you a favour, didn't they, and just get into this position. The year Arsenal are going to win everything. Stop me, Billy, I'm spiralling.

2:19Billie T:Yeah, mate, I was watching the news for a bit of relief from Tottenham, to be honest, about everything that's going on. the sort of way around that it feels at the moment. But yeah, I'm just, I'm consumed by every waking second, like you say. It's just, it's absolutely horrifying. It's like waking up in a nightmare scenario and just want to get game after game after game out of the way, just to make sure that we try and survive this thing. But it's just absolutely terrifying. It's not a feeling I've ever really felt as a Spurs fan before, like just the absolute horror that something this bad could likely go wrong.

2:51Billie T:And yeah, it just, it's horrible.

2:53Jack:it's horrible yeah i was speaking to to an old mate of mine the other day and he was asking how i was getting on with it all sort of jokes aside and everything and like you say there i've never never been in this position as a spurs fan this is it's never even been a whiff of this and it's i'm sort of lost for words it's really hard to know how i am feeling about it and i've you You know, I saw like our, you know, mutual good friend, Charlie Parrish the other day. He was sort of trying to look for some positives in the potential of getting relegated. You know, he was saying, well, you know, perhaps this is like the hard reset we need.

3:33Jack:And perhaps it will mean that, you know, the greys and the moors and those types will come to the fore. And I sort of, I jumped in a bit like actually saying like, you know, there's nothing good about getting relegated or anything. And he was just like, literally just trying to make myself feel better, mate, you know. And it's kind of, it's sort of where we're at, isn't it? Because I'm seeing a few people being like, oh, should we discuss like, you know, a potential Championship XI for Spurs? It's like, they were doing that on the BBC website earlier. And I was like, I don't want to manifest that yet.

4:08Jack:We can do all that in the summer, right? If the worst happens, we'll do all that then. But right now, we have to, don't we, Bill? like cling on to whatever hope there is that these lot can suddenly you know whatever it is if they all had a big barney wearing their kits and stuff after the after the game the other night which is you know which has been said now we have to hope that maybe maybe that's the the point of which they're suddenly like right we are actually in a relegation battle here and even if i am off in summer even if my dad's going to get me a move to barcelona i don't want this on my cv right that we've just got to cling on to that don't we you'd hope that there'll be some kind of professional

4:50Billie T:pride involved and um i mean worst comes to worst hopefully they'll offer there's some sort of massive financial incentive at this point just because i imagine that the club are going to try absolutely everything to try and keep relegated even if they're just like right we'll give you a million pounds each if you stay up um which will obviously be way worth it in the long run something like that just has to happen I think you know it's a real shame that we're at this position where it seems like our players need more than that like they can't just be going out every weekend I watch a few games every game of football that I watch at the moment is depressing because it's like why can't Tottenham just do this on a very basic level for Wrexham versus Chelsea for example like why can't Tottenham fight with 10 men like this or you know you're watching West Ham and Nottingham Forest they're just miles they're actually fighting for their team so why can't our players just do this uh you know the very base level of just like at least trying to fight but hopefully you know the threat of relegation how embarrassing it would be to be the part of the group of players that took Tottenham down because you know it would be probably like top five probably lower than Leicester winning the league what'd be like top five Premier League stories in history of the Premier League like that's how big it would be

5:59Jack:if Tottenham went down mate I I honestly think it's up there in the league I really I truly do

6:04Billie T:in the history of Premier League. That's how big that we're talking this story would be. And they would go down forever as the people that made that happen. And it's just, if that's not enough to make you want to survive this, then come on. But I don't know about you, Matt. I just saw these, it's like the bloody Stevenage fans singing about Tottenham and Lincoln fans singing about Tottenham. It just feels like, and it does feel like the Leicester season and the fact that every single person in football wants the same thing. And then it was, they wanted Leicester to win the league and now they want Tottenham to go down.

6:31Billie T:It just feels like everyone is maybe surprised consciously conspiring against us to go down it just feels like it's like crystal palace for example they had no business playing like that against us where did that come from they've been pretty abject recently they just come out of europe you know they're just coming off the back of a european game the manager hates them they hate the manager and suddenly they pull up this mental performance where they go and beat us 3-1 um and everything clicks them in in first place you know it's just like first gear it's like i just feel like subconsciously every team that we play now will want to be sent be the ones that help send top now it's like this this story is much bigger than the sort of on an individual level of the player like the story of tottenham

7:07Jack:going down is the all-consuming thing at the moment it's as you say it is just it is just all-consuming and i'll keep having these moments i keep having these moments like you know because there's a tiny baby in the house now and so be woken up in the night you know a couple of times and from that moment it'll be like i'm thinking about spurs this is the second the second i'm up you know wake up in the morning thinking about this and i know people will say go out for a walk go to the gym do this i do all that stuff still and when i'm doing all that stuff i'm thinking about spurs i'm thinking about this situation we find ourselves in you know i mean i get it like i've seen so there's like another wave now i've seen of people being like oh look at how entitled they are look at they think they are immune from a relegation battle and all this type of stuff number one yeah okay i i kind of do feel that i kind of i take pride in the fact that we've never been relegated from the premier league to this point like i i i like that we we've been an ever present um i worry about the you know the financial future of the club like you know we've created this sort of situation for ourselves haven't we like a millstone if you like with the infrastructure that the club has now this isn't let's put it this way this isn't a club that's in any way shape or form expected to get relegated right i would imagine with the overheads that we now have you know it's it's almost it's almost unthinkable that we would go down and there's all these sort of various different nightmare scenarios about having to sell the stadium or i i don't know Again, we can get to these when they come around.

8:51Jack:I do think one of the major things that people just overlook is as well is that Newcastle went down, right? Newcastle went down. That was crap. Villa went down. I'm sure that was also crap for them. You weren't going down when Birmingham were winning the league or when Sunderland were winning the league, you know? It's the fact it's got to be juxtaposed with that. It's got to be juxtaposed with them being as good as they are and the fact that, like, we will never live this down. never ever ever will we live this down there's there's nothing you can ever say to any of them ever again that will it just it goes with us to the grave doesn't it and that's that's how like

9:29Billie T:that's how huge this is isn't it oh yeah without a doubt and it's just the fact that those two things are playing out simultaneously is enough to send you know anyone most conscious and normal fan over the over the mental edge and it's just you know the fact that we've had to sort of sort We've lived with that for the last few years of their general success and them being good. And then they haven't managed to get over the line. And the year that they finally will get over the line, we might go down. It's just absolutely unbelievable. And I think the experience this season as a Spurs fan, it's been so unbelievably bad.

10:02Billie T:Just losing game after game, watching your rivals do this, this, and this. Losing most of our identity on an existential level, it's been awful as well. We don't even have, and I keep making this point now, But we don't have a single Tottenham player in the Tottenham XI anymore. We're even in the squad. There's no one. You know, we lost our talisman captain in Son. We lost Kane the year before that and two years before that. And, you know, our identity has just been stripped before our very eyes. And we're essentially living out like a nightmare scenario. When I was a kid, I used to, I don't know if you used to do the same.

10:31Billie T:I used to sometimes think that maybe like football was like all scripted and it was like a TV show. And I was imagining like if that is actually true. This is like the worst possible nightmare scenario of that, isn't it? It's like you're living the worst, you know, the worst percentile of simulation that you could possibly live in through. As a Tottenham fan right now, it could literally not get any worse than what we're experiencing.

10:51Jack:Because I think there's just so many, look, we've all had the conversations about, we've all had the conversations about the way in which the club has been, should we say, neglected in a footballing sense. One of the things I guess that, you know, I don't think many people outside of Spurs are choosing to highlight, and we probably aren't emphasizing enough because we are angry at Enoch, we are angry at the players, is that all of this stuff has come to a head. And also we've just had this unprecedented, large-scale injury crisis at the club where it's basically all of our best players have been picked off one by...

11:27Jack:It's almost like if you put it into the hands of a committee of Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham, whoever else wants to be some sort of tin pot rival of ours to say, what players would you remove from this Tottenham team to make sure they go down? Those are basically all the players that have been injured, isn't it, as well? And it's sort of, to me, it just, I don't know. I want to, the thing is, Bill, there's a quarter of the season left. I want to believe. I'm not accepting that we're going to get relegated yet. And I think that's the sort of energy we just have to try, like rage against the dying of the light, right?

12:02Jack:That's what we have to do. We have to try and pick ourselves up. Anfield away. If we get a point at Anfield, bang. You know, if we get a point at Anfield, then we got a break ahead of the Forest game. Is it? I think it's a break ahead of the Forest. Yeah, yeah.

12:17Billie T:Oh, no, sorry. It's a break after the Forest game. A break after the Forest game.

12:20Jack:Either way, full focus on the Forest game. You know, bin the trumpet. I don't want to see a T-fire. I just want raw, organic noise. I just want the Spurs fans, we have to believe. We have to. It's on us now, isn't it? It is on us now to drag them over the line, surely, because nobody's coming to our rescue.

12:37Billie T:And I know behind the scenes at the moment, we're speaking to a few people, we're trying to get together for that Forest game in particular, which is probably, you know, in the grand scheme of things, one of the biggest games in our entire history. We're going to try and Everton it, basically. I don't know if you remember the videos a few years ago of Everton being, you know, absolutely insane support during their relegation battle. And I saw a few of their fans being like, they showed the picture of the empty Tottenham Stadium. and they were like, well, this is what we did when we were in a relegation, but you need to do this.

13:05Billie T:And then a few other Everton fans would be like, well, that's a bit disingenuous because, you know, at this point in the season, our stadium is half empty when we were losing every game. I saw that, I saw that. But I know that a few Spurs fans are getting together. We're going to try and get something together on the high road for that Nottingham Forest game to try and greet the team bus with like flares and atmosphere and proper noise. And because I just think at this point at the moment as a fan base, like we have to stand up and be counted. And it's a shame that, you know, we're the ones that are going to be tested because we've been tested all season.

13:34Billie T:It's not our responsibility anymore. Nothing happens now as our responsibility. But at the same time, it would just be good to know that we've done all that we could to make this team know that this is actually really, really important because I think the connectivity between the fans and players at the moment is at an all-time low, which probably doesn't help the situation that we're in. But at the same time, I was at the Palace game on Thursday and the fans are really trying to get behind the team. It's the players that are letting us down over and over and over again at the moment. and you know your captain doing that against you know your captain doing that when you're 1-0 up you've finally got something to cling on to the first time we've gone ahead in a game in about 8 games I think it is then your captain does that and it's no wonder the fans you know suddenly the joy comes out of the atmosphere we've seen it all so many times but I know there's going to be a massive rallying call behind that Nightingham Forest game which is an absolutely monumental game for a high school

14:22Jack:it's both him both him and Romero him and Romero are just

14:27Billie T:I mean, that Romero red card, we've lost every single game since, including the one that got sent off him. We've lost all five. It could not have gone any worse, could it? It couldn't have been any more catastrophic, that red card.

14:36Jack:I mean, the thing is, I still think it was harsh. I still am in the camp that it was a harsh red card. But either way, he's got form. Either way, it was rash. We just, you expect better from these players. You know, this is two players out of the so-called leadership group. It's bonkers.

14:55Billie T:And it by all accounts are best players.

14:57Jack:two of our very best players they they probably are and that's you know labeled a suck i think yeah i mean let's let's let's talk about let's talk about igor tudor i'm sort of you know i was it's a difficult one because we can sort of segue this into your conversation with henry winter if anyone hasn't seen it billy was on last run spurs with ricky sacks they spoke to henry winter and it was you know an hour and a half two hour long chat but really involved long form deep dive into everything that's going on at Spurs and it was really good because Henry Henry sort of provided first name terms sort of provided a kind of temperature check at times I feel that at some points he was like well from the outside with my experience I feel x y and z but the worrying thing is that more often than not, he was pretty much aligned with all of our big fears.

15:53Jack:From the outside, he felt that we didn't have any leaders. From the outside, he felt that, you know, the players had been let down but still weren't doing to the best of their ability. And he also said that he felt that Igor Tudor was out of his depth. It feels farcical, doesn't it, to be, what, two games into his tenure and you're already saying, I've seen enough. I want him gone. But, you know, from where I'm sat, Bill, he was supposed to have come in to be a firefighter. He was supposed to be somebody that understood the brief. Spurs are in serious trouble. Spurs are missing a number of key players.

16:30Jack:What you need to do is maximize what you have. You stick players in their best positions. You scale it all back. Go back to basics. If that means hoofing it up the pitch and hoping that Dominic Solanghi or Richarlison and could get on the end of it, that's what you do. Instead, it feels like we've got a tinker man in charge who's going against everything that he said he was going to do. When he was in the press conference, he was saying, this isn't about trying to implement a style. This isn't about, you know, trying to show X, Y, and Z. This is about people, you know, maximizing what we have.

17:06Jack:And it feels like he's doing everything but that. It feels like he's a guy that doesn't understand the Premier League. And I know that's an easy thing to say, but I don't see how you can look at Spurs in contrast to the rest of the Premier League. I don't see how you can look at this Tottenham team, how they've performed since January and suggest that we should be playing the sort of formations, the sort of teams that he's been sticking out there. It genuinely does make me yearn and I scoffed and I laughed at the suggestion a few months ago of somebody like Harry Redknapp coming in. We've made memes about somebody like Sean Dyche coming in.

17:42Jack:mate I would I would take him in a heartbeat right now and that's genuine like I'm desperate and I get it but this is where we're at I mean for me the prime candidate really is Ryan Mason get Ryan Mason in give it to him to the end of season he knows the club he adores the club he loves the club he knows exactly what we need he knows that squad just give it Mace we can go down in a blaze of glory, if you like, but at least it will be Tottenham-themed glory. I've got no confidence in Igor Tudor at all, and it feels like it's becoming a bit of a circus, him coming out, digging us out in press conferences and stuff already.

18:23Jack:I keep asking the question, what are you doing here, buddy? What are you doing here? I don't get it, right? Yeah, and I think if you look at it as a sort of a year,

18:33Billie T:if you imagine his so he was in charge of one of those 12 games and uh obviously he's lost the first three of them it's like someone else being like really bad at their job and he you know from january to april it's like a quarter of his game's gone already and there's been no improvement at all it's if anything it's got worse there's baffling decisions in terms of player you know like the crystal palace game putting poro right center back and archie gray right back and when it really comes down to it i know we could have a massive conversation about archie gray who's been I'm one of the very few players to come out of this with any kind of glory.

19:02Billie T:But he's not a right back. Definitely not a right back.

20:23Billie T:My real worry is how much do these people even really care? because Igor Trudor, he sends Tottenham down. He can just say, well, I was there for 12 games. There's nowhere near enough time for me to turn everything around. We know Tottenham's a basket case. He moves on, doesn't even think about it, gets his payday, moves on. Probably is pretty much unscathed because it was a 12-game period. Players are the same. Again, I keep coming back to that point. There's not a single Tottenham player in the XI at the moment or on the bench other than the academy players who don't get a look in anyway. There's not a Tottenham coach.

20:50Billie T:Matt Wells is gone. There's not a single Tottenham person on the board. So how much do these people really even care about the future of our club. At least if you put someone like Ryan Mason in, at least then you've got at least a base level of, well, actually the club means everything to them. So that they at least care on that point of view. I think half of it, you know, we've got two loanies in our 11. Now, Paulinho, to be fair, it's not like he's given up on the club or anything like that. But at the same time, there must be a subconscious in the back of a sub being like, well, I'm not going to be here next season anyway if they get relegated.

21:16Billie T:And he does on a conscious level look like that. He, you know, almost explicitly with his body language says he doesn't care about if he's going to be here or not. I was like I'm really really worried in fact by the fact that there's no one Tottenham anymore in this Tottenham squad so that's why I think a manager coming in it's got to be someone like Mason. I see Redknapp has just been announced for I'm a Celebrity. I'll probably rule that one out and he's got Cheltenham hasn't he as well but you know Foe or someone like that I've seen these videos doing around I'm sure you have as well Matt Wells who's you know doing a really good job in America and like he's doing a bit of an Ange tribute act isn't he I saw he said when you know the first time he saw Ange do a speech the next day went out and bought a diary and started writing him all down and obviously that's his sort he you know he's comes from a Tottenham family I'm just really worried and you know I think it's already if we keep Igor Trudeau I think we're down just don't think it's going to work they don't you know these babies that we have they don't need someone to tell them that they're rubbish and they're terrible they need someone to put their arm around and say well guys you need you know you're fantastic and that's a sad reality in itself but that's just the way it is you know going hard on them is not going to work it's not worked and he's not got any reaction from the squad and it's already I think proven himself to be you know he's not going to be the one that saves us so I would just I have to get rid of him and I have to get someone who actually cares about the club as a minimum Bill um I sort of touched on

22:33Jack:your conversation with uh you know Henry Winter that you and Ricky had how did that come about and what sort of you know what sort of things I you know I do encourage anybody to go and listen to to the to the actual recording of this and you know I don't want to completely nick all of Ricky's content but what what were some of the more interesting parts that you thought from that conversation that you know people should go and listen to the full long

22:59Billie T:form one for so firstly Henry's always been like a real big supporter of um Change for Tottenham he's DM'd us a couple of times and he's always reported on it and always so I've had I've had a couple of times where he's asked me to do like a voice note or something for for his talk sport show so I kind of knew him a little bit I don't I've never met him or anything like that but he does he engages with changes a lot so i've always sort of known him from there and then ricky obviously everyone knows ricky you know last one on spurs gets journalists on um we've done a couple together uh before we've we've done um jay from the athletic we've done uh martin lipton together we've done a couple of other ones too um and you know we just we've just basically started doing these journalist shows together and then obviously he messaged me the other day saying we've got henry winter which obviously is you know no disrespect to any other journalist or anything but he's like the big dog isn't he you know he's got over a million twitter followers for god's sake this guy is you know a massive massive journalist and so it's a bit daunting going into it and and thinking that you know but what i would say straight away his handle on the tottenham situation was unbelievable like he just knew everything about it already like he wasn't you know he's he has no business or you know he's spent um before the interview he said he was watching other episodes of last one on spurs to get like a flavor of you know what's going on he watched Ricky on Sky Sports News and you know kept bringing it up and how important and powerful that was he has a real interest in fan view ship and he always kept saying things about how how important the fans are in this situation and that the board need to listen to fans so one of the big things I really admire from him is he was really sort of you know because he has let's be honest he's a he's an absolutely huge gargantuan figure in himself he doesn't need to be spending time sort of you know sympathizing with fans and things as many other journalists and many other people in football don't but he has a real handle on the sort of the genuine concerns of Tottenham fans and you know supports them as well so that was really good he had obviously he's got really he's just started a podcast about board level it's called like the boardroom with Gareth Southgate's media companies he also has a really good handle on what's going on above the board obviously interesting thing is he knows Vinay as well on a personal level like they used to do they've done like events together and stuff when Vinay was head of water stress at Arsenal.

25:11Billie T:Henry Winty used to host those with Vinay and they used to, you know, so he knows him but I thought he was very fair on Vinay. He wasn't like, I thought because he knew him on a personal level he would hold back criticism but he didn't do that at all. He was very sort of honest and open about how badly it's gone and how he thinks that maybe he's a number two rather than number one. So we had a real good insight into like the boardroom into, you know, the fan voice and the thing that he kept saying which is the thing which we've all said is just there is such a lack of leaders at Tottenham at every level not just the playing staff the manager the board you know and that i think is the reason why we're in the situation that we're in it's a really really good chat because he has really good insight into it but i think sometimes it's refreshing as a fan base when you know all of this stuff that we've been saying you know me and you know i listen to every week i listen to your podcast saying the same thing where someone like henry winter comes from an outside of you and basically repeats the stuff that we're all saying which i think is a good thing right it's like a good sounding board if someone so well respected and such an outsider um comes in and agrees with all the things that we've been saying you know all season it only shows that reveals that the situation that we're in is the truth like where is the truth what we're what we've been

26:17Jack:relaying yeah and that's sort of well it's not sort of it's it's completely validating isn't it because it was just because for so long and i know i've sort of moaned about this quite a few times on the podcast lately but for the past at least you know couple of seasons I mean it was it was only it was only a few weeks ago that we were still being called silly and entitled for wanting Thomas Frank to go you know it's it's it's absolute it's just it's just madness and I think the more and more people are starting to wake up to the fact that Spurs fans don't care about a big shiny stadium we shouldn't have to be quiet about the fact is we've got you know great partnerships with the nfl or an on-site brewery or all these types of things you know that we're showing up in the deloitte leagues tables and all this type of stuff all that we want is a football team that we believe in and a football team that feels like it's been lovingly assembled and is being assembled and managed with some purpose that's what we want that's what you And this is almost like the main realization that came to me throughout all of this, throughout this sort of soul-searching.

27:32Jack:When have I been the happiest? I know, Harry Redknapp, Riccio Pochettino, you know? And for a short while, Ange Postacoglu, but that all got kind of lost to something else and it's another conversation entirely, I feel. But those three in particular, it wasn't that we were winning the league. It wasn't that we were really winning anything under all those guys. But what we did see was finally a team that truly embodied everything that the club says it is. Everything that the club has always said it is. Everything that the fans know that the club should be. To dare is to do. A team that goes out there, wears the shirt with pride, attacks every single match from minute one, isn't scared of anybody that could beat anybody on its day.

28:19Jack:those those are the you know martin yole is the first manager of my lifetime really when i suddenly truly believed on our day we could have anybody we could be anybody that finally spurs weren't just a load of empty platitudes we weren't just a load of dusty black and white photos from the 60s um or you know an era of heroes in the 80s that were around before i was born or could remember right it was suddenly now spurs were here we were present now and we were standing up and being counted that's what i care about like that's what i care about i don't i don't i don't care about pints that fill up from the bottom or artisan burgers in the ground and all that type of stuff i don't care about light shows you know i don't care about you know nike kits or this or that yeah these these trappings are all lovely they're all nice but what i want first is a football team that i believe in and a football team that i feel that cares about us as much as we care about it and we just haven't had that all that we've had is that loyalty and that passion that we have for this club just leached out of us it's just completely like you know it's just it's been vampiric the the the the people at the top of the club the way they have treated it the way they have treated fandom and it does it like it does make me understand like danny kelly was was leading the charge on this from view from the lane the other day being like as painful as he will find it he will find it hilarious to these owners if we get relegated and now i don't share that as vehemently because the pain for me would override any feeling of satisfaction i have that it affects

29:58Billie T:the board but i do see where people are coming from right yeah 100 and um you know i i kind of I've also feeling this the whole thing of like relegation to these players it'll be it'll be a thing on their CV but let's not forget we signed Madison from a relegated team and then you just move on the world moves on you sign in you join another team you know you say ha he got me from a relegated team a bit lower probably a bit lower price than I would have gone for and the world moves on it wouldn't move on for fans though fans would have to bear the brunt of it you know going to every championship stadium next season and being the big you know the big story being the one team that they want to beat being the joke of all chance you know Arsenal imagine would chant about it in every Premier League game next season so what other teams that we don't even have any sort of affinity to it would just be and it's fans that would bear the brunt of it the most more than anyone the owners again you know they were just they palm eventually in the world you know they meant this I read that you know even if we go down you know our friend of the show Connor sort of figured out that even if we went down our revenue would be in line with about 6th or 7th in the country still.

31:04Billie T:We'd probably have more revenue than Aston Villa next season, even if we went down. So, you know, we're talking about 100 million, 200 million loss to a billion now, something like that. It's fans that would really bear the brunt of this. And that's the thing which upsets me the most, just because, you know, players will move. We already see it now, aren't we? Sunkia, his link, we're going to move to Newcastle. Xavi Simmonds has a tweet today saying he might move on in summer. Van de Ven go into Barcelona. These people will move on. But fans, we can't move on. you know we're the ones that have to deal with this um which is why i think we have to do absolutely everything to get it out you to get out of it and i just hope that something needs to change massively in the next nine games because if it doesn't when i watched that crystal palace game on thursday and you know i've said this said this to one of our other mutual friends seb as well from the athletic it felt like watching tottenham die in front of my very eyes like it just felt like terminal it felt like this is this is it this is the lowest it's the lowest point i've experience as a fan that that crystal panels game because it felt like actually that everyone including the players just accepted actually we're getting relegated now this is it but losing to crystal palace you know you are so at home you can accept losing just because they're miles better than us full and away we normally lose there at the moment i'd have liked to have seen a bit more spirit but crystal palace at home to lose 3-1 when your life is dependent on it it just feels terminal unless something massive changes it feels terminal and i really thought i thought you know we went 1-0 up I think like all we need is just one win to just really get us back into this out of this ridiculous mindset we've lost 11 Premier League games or no win in 11 Premier League games we haven't won in 2022 we just need one win or even if it's a point at Anfield like you said before that might do it but you know at the moment it just feels like the way if nothing changes at the moment we're genuinely going to be relegated as a football club which is just an

32:45Jack:absolutely insane thing to say the Palace game you know you know me I love a pop culture mashup by Tottenham Hotspur, but the Palace game for me was one of those. You remember watching Game of Thrones back in the day when they chopped off Ned Stark's head, but you kind of knew it was going that way. Yeah, he was going to get executed, and you're like, it's Sean Bean, man. This is Boromir. He's like the star of the show. He's the guy on all the promotional materials and everything. They're not going to chop Sean Bean's head off. It's not going to happen. And then he gets led up to the block, and you know Arya's there watching from the crowd and you're all like okay how are they going to get him out of this then and then you just see his head get chopped off and they hold it up aloft and you've got that sinking realization of like oh shit they just did that they've just they've just killed him and that's it that's gone that's what the palace the palace game was because we built it up for so long we built up well at least for the past few days leading up into it and it feels like a long time right at the moment there was all the talk about this is this is must win anything less than a draw anything anything less than a win as well exactly when that red card happened i just knew in the back of my head i was like i can't describe when the red card came out it was like we've already lost you know i mean and

34:06Billie T:that and that's what the players were like as well though that's but then again i watched rex and versus chelsea they get a red card at 2-2 or whatever it was and they you know they go on to fight and they almost get back into a game like why why can't we do that why is there this Why do we have no resilience? It's almost like at the moment the players are looking for any kind of excuse to lose football matches. Like the Romero red card again, you know, as soon as that red card came, you knew we were going to lose that game to Man United. It's just, you know, a dodgy decision or something like that versus Arsenal.

34:33Billie T:You know, we get a goal ruled out, which we should have had, and then suddenly we'll capitulate and lose 4-1. They seem to be always just looking for something. It's like the mindset is so unbelievably wrong. It's like they're looking for something which is going to trigger just giving up. And at the moment, there's just no fighters there other than a 19-year-old English kid called Archie Gray, who's the only person that really seems to actually want to drag us out the mud. People like Richarlison and Tello, I also think are going above and beyond. But Archie Gray in particular, if we had 11 Archie Grays, we'd be absolutely fine.

35:03We wouldn't be anywhere near where we are. It's just a shame we can't transpose that mindset onto all of our players

35:10Billie T:because most of them are just happy to accept losing at any excuse. i think some you know people will sort of you know think this stuff's all a bit gammon and all

35:21Jack:that type of stuff but you know a lot was made of archie gray and the sort of the the stock he was from if you like coming from you know a family of winners or that type of thing you know and we talk about sort of like club dna you know the player individually probably has their own but i mean they have their own literal dna obviously as a human being but what i'm saying is it like you know a sort of footballing dna built onto that person that there is a certain standard there's a certain level of professional pride you're carrying the gray family name if you like and there are certain standards that you have have to live up to now you know i'm not i'm not trying to have a swipe at any of the other players families or anything and i guess it sort of in a in a in a backhanded way seems i'm doing that i'm simply just trying to illustrate the point that you were making there that there needs to be then like yes like i think the fans we have to play our part but also you know whether you're going next season or not you know if you're going to get a move in summer to newcastle or whoever wants to buy you just have a bit of pride just just show that you can get out of it but you know this is and and you know what this is what sort of this stuff always leads me back to like the media and the betrayal and the portrayal of spurs is i think there is always that just that ready-made excuse for the for the players for people like vinay van kateshan where they can just say well spursy in it you know and it's just it all all personal responsibility all personal culpability gets handed off into this just into the ether into the ether of spursy well it's top them and people just allow that like we're not talking about like the fans we're talking about people outside of the club people allow that sort of thing to to permeate you know we do we you know we've got like the what the most powerful sort of or at least one of most powerful sort of football medias out there which is the overlap and they literally sit around and earnestly talk about you'll have the likes of Roy Keane who caveats everything by saying he's a Spurs fan but still we'll sit there alongside Carragher when he's on or alongside Neville and we'll just make these sweeping broad brush comments about Tottenham all the time of just like well that's what Tottenham are this is what Tottenham do that's what Tottenham are this that's this isn't Tottenham what we're doing right now is not Tottenham this is this is a complete aberration this is this is disgusting this is a board that has totally neglected their duty and yet none of them will say it none of them will call that out none of them will have our back it's simply the fans are entitled this is Spursy this is what Tottenham do but it

37:59Billie T:isn't and it's it's maddening you know and I saw that there's that quote is now that you know the the Cicciolini quote, this is the history of Tottenham. It's not the history of Tottenham. It's the history of Enick. It's why it is. It's the history of Tottenham. Before Enick came over, Tottenham were a massively successful football club. We'd won trophies in every decade. We were known as the cup team. We were known. There's that newspaper print from a couple of years ago where the joke is about Tottenham having too many cups because they win so many. In the 80s or whatever, we were a serial winning team.

38:29Billie T:And this is the history of Enick. It's not the history of Tottenham. and I tried to sort of ask Henry Winter about this. I was like, you know, what is it about Tottenham? It's so fascinating on this sort of, you know, from someone who does a podcast about general football and I thought about it from the overlap. Behind Man United, who do seem to get like the Ratcliffe and the classic, the obviously meme about the overlap that it's always just, you know, talking about the Fergie, isn't it? And you get some ex-Man United player and say, no, what was Alex Ferguson like? But behind that, the next big story is Tottenham.

38:58Billie T:Every, you know, every week they seem to get some kind of Tottenham related thing in there. Obviously, Gareth Bale was on last week and amazing and was listening to that and sort of thinking when he was talking so well about Tottenham and how amazing he chose to go into Tottenham over Man United. I was thinking, Jesus Christ, how have we fallen so far from that where a player like Gareth Bale can choose Tottenham over Man United and then come up, make his come up at Tottenham and become one of the best players of all time to where we are now. And it's not Spurs-y, it's not Tottenham, it's Enoch.

39:26Billie T:That is what it is. This hasn't been in our DNA. name this Spursy thing that's not been around for years and decades and it's been around since Enoch took over because you know they've constantly neglected the football team um and what you're left with is the sort of the biggest club that you can punch down on isn't it like we're you know everyone outside the big six hates us because we're in the big six and they're not and everyone in the big six hates us because we're the lowest level of the big six so we're the sort of we occupy this space where every single football club seems to like you know taking the piss out of us and then you can see it's only going to get worse and worse if we're relegated that'll be even even worse but i did kind of ask henry like why why is there so much fascination into tottenham's boardroom like all of these podcasts and stuff that go up and why is it always levy and enick that are such a big story for the media island i don't know what it is but there's just there's some kind of attractions tottenham on on a media level you know if you ever look at paddy power and stuff like that it's all spec savers and dominoes they're always about tottenham tottenham Tottenham um I'm trying to unpick why that is but really it's just because our the neglect that we suffer from this board just makes us such an easy target you know they the constant neglect and the constant always trying to succeed and never quite making it you know because we'd never quite take the final step because of the you know the board never do it um just makes us an easy target right and I feel like that's why we're always this constant story whether it's on the overlap whether it's on the boardroom whether it's on the you know Simon Jordan is another one who always mentions us I don't know if you saw that the Jason Cundey Jamie O 'Hara thing which is actually to be fair quite funny but you know that's that's

41:02Jack:Is it when he's got that weird mask on?

41:04Billie T:And that's getting like 70 ,000 likes on Twitch like we are we are the story of football like we're the main characters at times it feels like

41:10Jack:Well you know it's not all doom and gloom Diego Simeone says that Atletico Madrid are the underdogs going into our game with them tomorrow night Spring is here And there's a whole new way to chai at Starbucks that's made perfect for you. Choose your sweetness, dial it up, or keep things light. Add a touch of pistachio, a hint of strawberry, or vanilla. Or make it a spring classic with lavender. Because this season, there's endless ways to chai at Starbucks. Kayak gets my flight, hotel, and rental car right. So I can tune out travel advice that's just plain wrong. Bro, Skycoin. Way better than points.

41:52Billie T:Never fly during a Scorpio full moon. Just tell the manager you'll sue.

41:58Jack:Instant room upgrade. Stop taking bad travel advice. Start comparing hundreds of sites with Kayak and get your trip right. Bad advice? You talking to me? Kayak. Got that right. LinkedIn is pretty great at a lot of things, like helping you tap into the latest trends and insights in your field. We cannot stop your co-worker from tapping her pencil. LinkedIn can help you find new jobs that align with your career goals. We cannot help you find the source of that weird smell in the office fridge. And while we can't stop your co-workers from bringing their hobbies into the office, LinkedIn can help you bring your career to the next level.

42:39Jack:LinkedIn is the network that works for you. it feels like you know i feel i feel sick feeling this way bill but i just want us to throw it i just you know and i know to dare us to do i know the game is about glory i know let's go down in a blaze of glory but i truly feel now more than ever this competition this game as majestic as the champions league is and as much as i love it and who knows when we'll be back in it again to me our premier league survival is far more important than a big showpiece competition like this and and and do you know what as well mate what also what it what it carries with it as well is a sort of a there's like a there's like a dichotomy at play here where on one hand if we go out to the to the to the like the one the metropolitano avenge the scene of the crime liverpool and we somehow win against diego simeone's low block monsters it'll be a glorious night in our history on the other hand i will sit there and i'll look at these players and think how is it that you're capable of doing that and you can't do this in the premier league you self-serving little weasel i'm just kind of thinking there's a thing in the back of my mind

43:48Billie T:which is saying the lights are on i know the world is watching they know all the top clubs are watching tottenham versus atletico now we're going to play we're going to play for that summer move to barcelona that summer move to atletico and that would almost disgust me and it would anger me if we win tomorrow in some ways just because like it genuinely would right how could you do this again this has been happening all season how can you go and beat atletico by all accounts an incredible team you know the sad thing is this should be such an exciting occasion i was saying we've played them all we've played everyone psg barcelona ventus you know madrid ham for the times dortmund we play every year we never play atletico never done it since the 1960

44:23Jack:i think 1966 no i've sort of always wanted to as well yeah and it just feels like we are

44:28Billie T:kind of i mean not anymore but you know there was a time when we were almost like the atletico Madrid of the English Premier League weren't we were like we were the ones that were sort of punching above our weight that's obviously falling off a cliff the amazing thing about Diego Simeone is no matter what happens to Atletico they're always always either third or fourth in the league all going for the title every single season without fail they're basically a much more competent version of us and they do spend a lot of money as well let's not have they're not like underdogs and that's but they spend hundreds of millions of pounds in transfer windows that's why they do it but you know we used to be like that we're not anymore and we've fallen a long way but it would have been like a really fascinating tie.

45:06Billie T:But now it's just like the importance of this match, you know, it couldn't be any less, could it? It just could not be any less. I just imagine, you know, Romero comes back tomorrow and does a hamstring or something like that. What is that going to do for us? So I see the argument that, you know, we need to play into form, so we should go for it. But I just know that these players, I know what's going to happen tomorrow. They're going to play out of their skin just because they're in a Champions League tie, under the lights, you know, the whole world watching, in the Champions League. They're going to play out of their bloody skin and they're going to they might get a result or something like that and then they'll go and get battered by Liverpool it's just the way that it is but that would almost be more painful in some ways the reality is it's not you know I've seen people comparing it to the I said the same a couple of weeks ago I said you know whatever happens we need to play the kids versus Atletico and people said well what happens if we go and beat Fulham and Palace I said yeah if that's if we do that fine we can go into it but we didn't obviously did we but people said you know people said the same in the Europa League run well the Europa League run is completely different because we were favourites to win the Europa League even at this stage in the season when we were 17.

46:02Billie T:There's 0 % chance of us winning the Champions League. It's just not going to happen. So I don't buy into this, oh, what kind of mentality is that? It's not really a loser mentality to be wanting to concentrate on your survival, I think. And it's just delusion. If there's anyone that's sort of thinking, well, maybe we could go and win the Champions League, but we can't. We have to play against people like Barcelona, PSG, in their prime, Barcelona, these kind of teams. So it's just not going to happen. So, yeah, it's such a weird feeling because going into a Champions League time, last 16, but probably the last time I'll be in the Champions League for God knows how long as well.

46:35Billie T:Don't forget that factor of it. Should be really exciting, but it just feels like I just can't wait to get out and get to that Liverpool game, to be honest.

46:42Jack:I guess you sort of touched on it there, Bill, but, you know, the idea of playing into form, do you think, I guess the only thing we can maybe have to concede is as much as we've said about needing to pat these players on the head and tell them they're, you know, the best boy, even if that goes against our very nature and we hate the idea of doing that. I guess we should probably also concede if they were to go out and get a positive result in Madrid, maybe that will G them up, boy them going into a game against Liverpool at Anfield. You know, a similarly tough away fixture. Liverpool themselves are stuttering form-wise.

47:22Jack:Liverpool, you probably could say, can be got at. I don't know if Tottenham are the team right now to get at Liverpool, if you like. But, you know, if we, if, and it is a massive if, but if we got something at Anfield, I mean, it's just, it's monologue. I mean, what am I saying? You know, we never get anything there. But again, you have to try and manifest this, don't you? We just, we have to. We have to, you know, by hook or by crook, pray, whatever, that we can just get something in basically every single game we play. And that's the one thing I will give Tudor that he said, you know, when he was asked, is the Palace game a must-win game?

48:03Jack:He was like, look, that might be a nice conversation to have in the pub, but, you know, his point was basically every single game is must-win. You go into every single football match to win it. You don't just designate one as a must-win game. and I think that's kind of just what we've got to shift our attention to now isn't it because the mad thing is you know at the start of the season you would probably look at our run into the end of the year and think other than Stamford Bridge other than Anfield we've got quite a favorable end of the season now I look at it and think Jesus Christ where are the points coming from but again just got to believe don't we yeah and that's that's it isn't it it's like

48:44Billie T:someone was saying this last week you know when you're in this kind of run of form you look at a game like Brighton at home and think oh my god we you know we could lose that and you know before that would just be absolutely mental wouldn't it and then you know Forrest at home suddenly feels terrifying just because they went and got that result against Man City and they and they nearly beat Liverpool the other day they've been playing really really well it's just we just need some kind of spark and that might you know to be fair it could be a draw at Atletico away or a draw at Anfield or something like that we just need something which gets us out of this absolute but my worry of that is they've had that this season as well and it's not work you know we drew against man city that didn't really kick us on we beat dortmund we beat frankfurt and that's not done it either so i just wonder what it's going to take for these players to get some confidence back and you know i'm just constantly drawn to the manager like it's going to have to be you know get a harry redknapp in and tell them how brilliant they are because they've had results you know frankfurt was a massive result you know we lost the next premier league game man city it It was a massive result, massive performance as well.

49:40Billie T:It did not inspire any kind of form after that. So, I just keep wondering what is going to be the catalyst which turns us around with these players. I'd be very surprised if it's anything related to Igor Trudeau at this stage just because of our value that's gone. But maybe it is just a massive result in the Champions League that might finally get it over the line. I think our biggest problem is, without doubt, the players have got all confidence is gone from the players. They're completely gone. It's gone. which is why I think you know publicly going in on them was a bit bizarre because it's it's the opposite of what they need but I just wonder what it's going to take to get that confidence back

50:16Jack:Bill going into the Forest game obviously there is some planned action from change for Tottenham can you take us into that what that looks like and if anybody wants to get involved what what

50:27Billie T:they can do that where they should go yeah so we're gonna gonna delay announcing at the moment just because we're trying to get a temperature gauge on how the fans feel about it and kind of in two minds at the moment. What is definitely going to be true is that we're going to be promoting a thing before the game to meet the players on the bus. And to be honest, my gut feeling at the moment is that's the most important thing that we can do as a fan base. And if that means we're holding off on protests and the owners until a bit later on in the season, then fine. So we're going to hold off a little bit just because, at the moment anyway, just because I think we have to get behind these players.

51:00Billie T:We have to. It's our massive responsibility as a fan base. So we're going to announce plans for that soon. it's not just a change there's a few people that are coming together to do it we're going to try and greet the team bus on the high road I think about 12.30 on the Sunday the 14th which I think it is or Sunday whatever it is Sunday the 17th whatever it is against Forest and we're going to try and greet the team bus we're going to bring flares we're going to have a drummer there, we're going to do chanting to really show these players that fans are not giving up on this and we hope that will inspire the players.

51:31Billie T:In terms of the ownership obviously we will be protesting the owners at some point this season it just kind of i don't know what you feel at the moment just feels like as a fan base our main priority has got to be supporting the team right now yeah i mean it's

51:42Jack:i think you've nailed it there mate like if if if in the event that we go down or we don't go down either way it's big protest get rid of these owners they've they've shown it now and they're they've run out of rope they've run out of road whatever you want to say that it's it's end time now go go yeah you've you've you've you've you've trodden our club into the mud you have done it again i don't care about a stadium i don't care about a shiny training ground what i care about is tottenham hotspur on the pitch and you've just you've desecrated it completely like and it's you know people people think it's dramatic but you know we're sat here on the verge of relegate we're talking about tottenham hotspur tottenham hotspur on the verge of relegation people will always say you know fans like you with this mentality x y and z no like i think we do have certain standards we might not be real madrid we might not be liverpool but we're still we're still tottenham fucking hotspur and we we don't we don't get relegated we don't do this people compare it

52:44Billie T:to last season as well said well you nearly got relegated last season but we were 13 points of relegation last season at this point and we ended up 18 points above relegation it was never really close like we were 17 it was close in terms of position because we were 17 but the gap between Tottenham and the 18th place team was 18 points by the end of the season right now it's one point it's one point and we are catastrophically losing every single game of footballs you know it's a very different picture this season it's you know it's not it's not just a thing that you know some fans say anymore like catastrophizing it's a very very you know we're seven to four with the bookies to go down it's unheard of like we are you know less than you know if you're a bet if you're a betting person last time we're six to four we're seven to four there's basically 50 50 between us

53:23Jack:it's crazy like it's absolutely crazy um bill you do do your podcast as well when the whistle blows who have you got on this week and where can people listen watch yeah um we're having a little break

53:35Billie T:this week because connor's skiing but uh we'll be back probably next week to just i think um you know this you've you've absolutely thrown him in there i think we'll be back next week just because i don't know about you mate but this this not an unforest game is one that just feels like absolutely monumentally big, doesn't it? And it's also the same day that Arthur playing in the final that day as well. So it could even be one of the best days in history or the worst.

53:59Jack:Feels close to like Champions League final level and I mean that honestly. And that's why I think as a fan base

54:03Billie T:we will be like that. Like we were for the Champions League. You know, I remember obviously I wasn't there but I was in Tottenham for Europa League and Champions League. And you know, when we want to our fan base can really step it up. And I feel like that's what we're going to do for Forrest because I feel like we have to do that.

54:18Jack:And there is just it's more narrative it's them as well you know like another one of these teams has created this kind of yeah this this faux rivalry with us we just yeah we've got we've got oh man just do away with them um Bill it's been an absolute pleasure as always my friends um thank you very much and I guess all that remains to be said is up the spurs

54:43Billie T:up the spurs and let's turn this around and save our football club

Jack welcomes Billie from the When The Whistle Blows podcast back to the show to reflect on the current doom spiralling at Tottenham Hotspur. With board neglect, mounting injuries, and a general feeling that the universe is conspiring against us, we try to find a reason to remain hopeful.

We ask if the fans are now the last bastion keeping the club in the Premier League. The pair explore the heavy emotional toll of constantly rallying behind a team that has let the supporters down so often over the past couple of years, and discuss how we can possibly muster the energy to keep going when times are this tricky.

Billie also touches on a fascinating conversation he recently had with renowned journalist Henry Winter on Last Word on Spurs alongside Ricky Sacks. We discuss how disarming, yet incredibly validating, it was to have somebody with such vast footballing knowledge from outside the Tottenham bubble notice the exact same structural failings that Spurs fans have been screaming about.

Finally, attention turns to the Champions League and the upcoming clash with Atletico Madrid. Despite the sad reality that this could be the last game Spurs play in Europe's elite competition for quite some time, we debate whether the fixture simply feels like an unwelcome distraction from the terrifying and all-consuming threat of domestic relegation.
