In short

Tottenham’s relegation battle and the fallout from Arsenal winning the league; Chelsea vs Spurs at Stamford Bridge, including a disputed VAR penalty; Spurs’ attacking quality and Kolo Muani as a “worst ever” signing; Q&A on what changes are needed (Johan Lange and Vinay Venkateshan) and how fans should handle the final-day match vs Everton.

Guest backgrounds

Two hosts, Billy and Matt, both long-time Spurs supporters discussing matches, VAR, recruitment, and club management.

Key claims

VAR refereeing is incompetent and has worsened; Spurs’ front three lacks quality (Richarlison not fully fit; Matisse Tell not ready to start every week; Kolo Muani is far below required level); Spurs’ season failure is driven by board/ownership recruitment and direction, not only Lange; fans have prioritized supporting the team despite protests being harder.

Notable examples

Stamford Bridge penalty dispute involving Van de Ven/Kucurella; Spurs’ XG comparison (Tottenham 1.72 vs Chelsea 0.63); Muani’s limited output (1–2 PL goals, none impactful); comparisons to smarter scouting (Brighton/Bournemouth players like Rayan/Krupic).

1:54Jack:Hello everybody, welcome back to Rule The Routes podcast. Billy, mate, what have we done to deserve this? what have we done well do you know i mean there's bad timelines and there's bad timelines i mean the one we're on is uh it's pretty pretty disgusting isn't it yeah it's just like i mean it must be up there with the worst possible experience as a football fan what we're experiencing right now obviously um choose to choose there in particular was horrific like the worst it's almost like if you pitched it when you were growing up as a spurs fan that'd be the worst possible doomsday scenario isn't it like Arsenal winning the league your rivals sending you down to the last day of survival and then you know a couple of days later you get reminded of Bilbao you lose a European championship um obviously Aston Villa take it off you and then yeah this has been an absolutely horrendous couple of days hasn't it football there was that moment wasn't there watching the Chelsea game where like you say we're 2-0 down to Chelsea and you're sat there thinking about all the permutations as to what that'll mean for the final day and everything and then there's just a big massive banner on the on the screen saying Arsenal champions and you're just like like you say you're like what the fucking hell is this like what what what is going on yeah if you if you're a Norwich fan or something yeah what are you scared about oh Ipswich might get promoted and we don't boo-hoo do you know I mean like you say like I maybe other than Everton, I think it's us and Everton, ironically enough, that have this in common, that our rivalry is so acutely painful.

3:32I mean, we've had like the, I was obviously too young to remember it, but, or to, you know, the classic of them winning the league at White Hart Lane. But I think them winning the league and us essentially almost being relegated is worse, right? Like, it's just, like you just, and especially because over the, at least over the last 10, 15 years, it's an impossible scenario. There's no way Tottenham could ever be in a relegation battle. But we're living it. We're living the nightmare now. We're actually living... One of my least favourite phrases in football is, you couldn't write it, because normally when people play that, it's the first thing someone would write.

4:07If someone scores a corner at the last minute against their ex-club, that's the first thing you would write. The commentator's always like, you couldn't write it, could you? But you could. That's exactly what you would write.

4:17Jack:but this is like proper fletcherism isn't it yeah this is like you would if you're writing a nightmare about tottenham this would be it we're living the nightmare it's like the stephen king version of tottenham well let's go into the let's go into stanford bridge first and foremost um can i just say one thing though just on that quickly and i know this is massively small time i know this is probably 90 copium winning the league doesn't quite feel as bad as i feared it would like just because of how awful we are but that's my overriding my main mental bandwidth is taken up by being terrified about tottenham being relegated and it's kind of in a slight way distracted from you know i've been fearing arson win the league five six last you know seasons consecutively and now that it's actually here it didn't really like it's not really like ruined my life as much as the tottenham scenario if that makes sense how do you how did you know deal with well I mean that's usually it's usually the way isn't it I mean I have seen Arsenal win the league at premier uh yeah in front of my very eyes so it's you know it's kind of and I think the funny thing is though back then even though they were winning the league at White Hart Lane it didn't feel as pronounced because social media didn't exist yeah and I think I have done a lot of like soul searching into this um and I agree with you I don't think it felt quite as bad because you sort of when you take a step back you realize that the majority of what you don't actually like is just annoying people being more annoying on social media do you know what i mean and as soon as you kind of just realize that that doesn't really matter um then it is what it is and you know i'm never i'm never gonna do the you gotta hand it to isis thing i'm not but I guess I sort of am is that the only thing in terms of the self-reflection right I'm sat here thinking really right we're looking at a club that has whatever we think about them has made and I keep saying this but has made winning stuff their priority right who are we honestly who are we to sit here with our concerts and our F1 track and all that type of stuff and sit here and get all bitter and twisted about another club that that outside of them being our like most despised rivals and you know the the sort of things that we do dislike them for i'm just talking about on the top level right it's just it's kind of pathetic we should be first and foremost demanding more we'll get onto this but we should be demanding more from our owners from the people that run our club because and like i said we will get into this but this season has shown quite what a shambles it is it really has thrust into the most painful thing for me the most painful thing about arsenal winning the league is they've done it with their pochettino equivalent they've done it with yeah that team that that sort of team that went from being like the mason towns and all that sort of thing when you think about like you know the smith rose and all that sort of thing right that came up and ganduzzi and all that lot that came and went sort of thing right they've they've transitioned to this point where they've actually been successful because their board have backed Arteta and they've made him the figurehead of the club and they've believed in him in a way that we never did with Pochettino.

7:35Jack:And as I've said on here many, many times, the fact that the people, Daniel Levy, Enoch, didn't realise or didn't care about what a precious and what a rare thing we had with that 16-17, let's just call them that core of players just shows you that they just then they're either not in it or they're not capable of taking Spurs to the next level because it's a it that can be a once in a lifetime thing that we had there yeah you know um and then the kicker is they've done it with the same amount of points that we got on that season as well and like maybe won the league about 86 points um which is what we got that season and um i think the most the obviously i'm not doing that thing where i say i don't care about arsel in the league so of course i do but the most i think you're right the most frustrating thing about all of it is that could have been us like what they've done is something which we could have done if we had ambitious owners like they haven't been financially doped to an extent where like you know by a petro state or anything like that they've just invested heavily um in the football team um and they've earned more money from being successful and finishing in the top four top two for like five years in a row and we could have done that like we could have done that like the size of a club are comparable the ambitions of the club are not comparable unfortunately the only thing i would say on that is and it's not really to pick you up on it it's more just a lot of what i've seen them saying i've seen a lot of teary your troops is and this and that talking about how they're sort of making out like it's little old arsenal oh god yeah i've seen you know gone against all the odds and all this type of thing exactly 1.5 bells stan kronky's worth like tens of billions like come on lads like and and that's the way you got to do it right if you if you want to if you want to win stuff now that's simply that's what you've got to do improve their squad in every transfer window which is how you do it sadly so i'm not really judging them on that level i just i really am loathe to like accept in any way shape or form the fact that they're this like anyway a sort of fairy tale any anyway and i have to say when they when they tweeted the Arsenal are Premier League champions.

9:41I saw that.

9:42Jack:I saw that. The Arsenal. Just that. Yeah. That is enough to show how I'm able to be that. Keir Starmer did it as well. Yeah. Did you see Keir Starmer tweeted the Arsenal as well? The same word does it all about their club, doesn't it? That one word just does it all. Just that. Do you know what the thing is, though? It's permeating everything. Like every work call, like literally yesterday, I was having work calls with just random people in various different sectors and whatever who would just say, yeah, you'd be like, how are you? And they'd be like, a very delighted Arsenal fan today. And you're like, I really don't care, mate.

10:16Jack:And they don't know I'm a Spurs fan or anything like that. This is just like a person I'm having a work call with. I teach online now. And yesterday, I've been teaching this class since January every day. Yesterday, one of the kids wears an Arsenal shirt. First time that's ever happened. God's sake. Expelled. Expelled, that's it. Not appropriate. Jeff Shreves came out as an Arsenal fan, didn't he? I've been waiting for this mode for 22 years and they're just coming out of woodwork everywhere I just Stamford Bridge was not very good I mean it wasn't bad bad but it felt like you know we couldn't really really sort of lay a glove on a Chelsea side that weren't particularly good I didn't look at the side and think like God why aren't they trying harder I just looked at the side and thought yeah they're not very good are they and that's kind of that's kind of where we're at um obviously what's sort of taken the uh a lot of the the headlines out the back of the match is the penalty that wasn't given um i mean in on this instance i'm not really buying so much the conspiracy thing only in so much as and i wonder how much of like var's misgivings can be explained by this i feel like the referee has kind of gotten himself in a pickle and var haven't wanted to mug him off i feel like he's he's blown up there giving him a yellow card and not thought to give him a penalty and so everyone now is sort of retrofitting okay well actually the ball was in this phase of play and i've even seen people say the ball needs to have left a certain radius from the player and all this type of thing it seemed the line seems to be that the infraction began so kukurella started fouling van der ven because we've seen the screenshot right of the ball being in play but the the talk is that the foul begun before the ball was kicked whatever it is right whatever it is whatever sort of thing we can dial down into this is all part of the problem like the The fact that we are having these conversations now is part of the problem.

12:25Jack:And once again, highlights really the incompetence of Premier League refereeing, that they have allowed corners and set pieces in general to get to such a place where we have these conversations. Why have they not been stronger sooner on this? It's been so clear. You know, let's go back to the Arsenal-West Ham game, you know? Yeah, fine. It's a foul on Rhea, right? but we're talking about kind of a number of infractions in the box happening at the same time. Yeah. Pool days call for cookouts and lots of laundry. Deepop, where taste recognizes taste. And it's just, if you remember at the beginning of the season, talking in summer here, they did say they're going to be stronger on stamping out fouls in the box.

14:31That was a directive this season in view of Arsenal last season, who seemed to have got worse this season at doing it. But it's just not happened. It's not happened. Every single one is like some ridiculous melee. You have to wait like four minutes for the ball to come in, which is awful as a fan because you know the actual amount of game time that we actually get in the Premier League now is just diminishing, diminishing, diminishing. You get all these stupid melees that the referee blows up, goes and talks to someone, same thing happens again, they don't leave each other. It's just got into such a horrific situation that you know I'm not even that bothered by the actual event because you know if we're being honest as fans he probably did most of that foul did occur while the ball was out of play that's just a fact.

15:11Like the ball might have been coming to play as these van der Benz almost on the floor but the referee messed it up by blowing the whistle for it like when the ball was in the middle of the air not at the beginning so it's another absolute cock up and just the annoying thing for me is exactly what you were just talking about there it's just analyzing these referee decisions in minutiae detail it's just so boring isn't it like it's just but it's every single game that we do this now like it's just become part of the products of the Premier League has become discussing VAR which is just awful in every single way but it's and i was i've you know i've been speaking to spurs fans about this as well it does feel like at times we're being targeted this season but then i almost feel like if you watch every single premier league game something like this happens i think that the ineptitude outweighs like the the moral corruption i mean it's just they're just

15:58Jack:absolutely useless as an organization i mean don't we can have tens of thousands of hours of dialogue about VAR and probably already have across all the different podcasts but as it comes as a sort of surprise to you really because it has to me uh that it has that it's well just that it's permeated in the way that it has that it's not just something where oh there's a questionable decision that let's go to VAR and take a look at it it's the fact that VAR is constantly scrutinizing every single kick of the game which is yeah and what i don't understand is um it's got a lot worse in as time has gone on whereas you think like if we go back to like the pochettino era when var was first introduced he had like the sterling thing in the champions league it was in the champions league then it came into the league that season it wasn't it wasn't this bad at the beginning like it just wasn't like it was i know a few people were like oh look at the you know I think a lot of people's gripes back then were like the lines drawn for the offside and stuff like that.

16:59It takes ages. I don't remember this ridiculous level of ineptitude back then. It seems to have got worse. I think it's just English refereeing.

17:06Jack:I think, look, VAR is still not perfect in the Champions League, right? But I tend to feel like it's better. I think the same would be with the World Cup as well. I don't think they'll have these conversations in the World Cup in general because it's just better. It's just annoying. I mean, look, regardless of that, I mean, let's not turn everything into, again, another thing that's completely out of our hands. And I think the worst, to be honest, the worst one was the Dilap one, right? That was, that was, that's just, wow. Yeah. I mean, and Jed Spencer's sort of comment, well, I mean, commented via emojis on that one.

17:38Jack:And I think he's got form for it as well, Dilap. But it's bizarre. Yeah, he did that in the past. But like, outside of that, you know, we're sort of, we're looking at a game where Chelsea got, basically, you know, a fraction of the XG that we did. You know, 1.72 of Tottenham to 0.63 for Chelsea, right? I mean, again, it's a sort of a statistical difference that highlights essentially the absolute lack of quality that Spurs have up front. I think Richarlison is half fit, if I'm honest. Like, I know he's inconsistent at the best of times. But he's done, isn't he? Yeah, but I don't think he's fully fit at all.

18:14Jack:What are we supposed to do about this, mate? Like what we're supposed to do in the final day of the season, because it just, it looks like we just, I don't know, we just get to a point and we just run out of ideas. We've got nothing to do because it's not helped by the fact we have nobody, we have no true creator behind what is a misfiring frontliner either, right? And I think it's very, very clear that De Zerbi is squeezing every last drop out of these players. It's like the improvement that we've seen under him. There's no doubt in my mind that if he was our manager, even as far back as Igor Tudor, and obviously if you go back before where Thomas Frank should have been sat, we'd be nowhere near the situation.

18:52I know that Nathan posted a graph showing the difference in XG between this season and the improvement under De Serbi has been massive.

19:02Jack:Did you see the post-match? Did you see his post-match presser? I did. It was quite interesting. and it was the first time really, considering he's been so sort of like big brotherly with them and quite kind to them, this was the first time when he was really like, it's on these players, they've got to do better. They have to play with some pride. They have to think about the club and the heritage of the club. Exactly, dignity. So, you know, it kind of suggests that he is trying to get as much as he can out of them, but probably still wasn't entirely happy with the showing at Stamford Bridge, was he?

19:38Jack:But it's funny. it's a it's a hard one mate I really don't know how I feel about a lot of the players out the back of that game because I I thought they were okay I thought it just like you say it looked like a core of players that were stretched to their very limit and it's not it's not like an effort thing is it like they're trying they're just not it's a quality thing that the quality is especially in the front three um who if we break it down individually Mattis Tal is a young player who's quite clearly not ready to start Premier League games week in, week out, because there's either some kind of mistake or lots of endeavour, lots of trying to do stuff, but then at the very crucial moments, he'll either, you know, as we saw against Chelsea, gets the ball in the box, put a cross in, goes straight to the keeper, gets a header, misses it, a couple of bad decisions, but he's definitely trying to make things happen, and sometimes he does, like he scored in the previous game, got an assist versus Arsene Villa, but what ideally you want there is a pretty class winger that you can bring Matis Tell on for and they can rotate.

20:38At the moment, we have to play Tell every single minute of every game. Richarlison, his body is done and there's no Solanke to rotate him with. 60 minutes versus Leeds, after that he was done. Chelsea, you can just tell he's not fit, but again, he can make things happen, score. Kolo Mawani is nowhere near the level that we need, nowhere near the commitment. I think he's the only probably player in the team that you can also question their commitment as well as their efforts. I think in general, they're trying to make things happen. But the quality in that front three is just nowhere near good enough to get you out of this, you know, to win Premier League games consistently.

21:13And credit to De Zerbi for at least creating a system where they're getting chance after chance and making chances because that's an improvement on what we saw under Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor. They're actually, the system is working, you know, because we did have almost two XG against Chelsea away, which is, you know, by far one of our best games this season in terms of XG. But there's just a massive quality issue there. and that front three is just not good enough and you have to you know that's not our front three that's not our you know it's just again we've been absolutely blighted by injuries this season and then you know if you look at the last four or five games obviously the improvement has definitely been there played really well against Aston Villa played quite well against Leeds and for Chelsea we were okay at parts like we didn't you know we could have easily got back into that game and taken a draw from it and we started quite well as well but it's just such a typical thing at the story of Sanford Bridge isn't it where we go there thinking that we should be able to get a result here and we just don't it's just like a curse almost and I looked at that Chelsea team and it's just compared to some of the Chelsea teams we've faced lately it's just that that is an awful Chelsea team really compared to what it has been in the past but again you know it's the same story isn't it we go there and lose I guess also the problem is right I think

22:25Jack:this is part of the thing I've been thinking out the back of it are they awful compared to us though probably not which is the which is the kicker right that's the that's the context that is still in a European place in an FA Cup final yeah they're worse seasons Enzo Fernandes and Caicedo's like midfield partnership you know it's one of those things isn't it yeah it's frustrating but I mean Rando Colomawani just on that worst signing we've ever made is he up there at least it's got to be up there I mean at least we didn't do any significant financial outlay into it because it's only a loan but But just in terms of sheer disappointment or just sheer poor quality, I mean, considering we signed him as a striker on the last day of the transfer window, what's he called?

23:11One Premier League goal versus Arsenal or two Premier League goals. He got a couple in the Champions League and it's just been woeful, hasn't it? And then there was a slight uptick when De Zerbe joined and just really, it must be up there, especially if we get really good.

23:27Jack:This is one of those things, isn't it? Again, it just highlights, doesn't it? When you think about the majority of significant business Spurs have done in the past however long, right? And let's chuck Kolomwani into this because I think there is a – I can't remember if it's an option to buy or not with him. I think there probably is. Is there not? Well, you know, there's been some talk anyway that we would explore that if he'd done well. So, you know, you're probably looking at 30, 40 mil or so for him. You look at the other deals that we do or the players that we target, Eza, Semenyo, Richarlison, Solanke.

24:03Jack:It's all again, isn't it? It's the household names, isn't it? It's the lack of imagination. It's a total risk aversion, isn't it? Spurs have penned themselves into this place where they're like, we must maintain fifth place and above and we're going to aim to do that by signing players that seem like they're best of the rest. But it's just frustrating to not go that one step further. Like we used to. This is the thing. We used to do that. You know, Sonny, Berbatov, you know, players like this that were smart acquisitions that were well-scouted players. And Luka Modric. And if you look at the teams that do that now, they both have a chance of being in the Champions League, you know, Brighton and Bournemouth.

24:47I mean, imagine if we signed Kruppi or Rayan instead of Kola Mawani. two absolutely brilliant Bournemouth players Brighton and Bournemouth both have a chance to be in the Champions League on the last day of the season like that sort of creative scouting that you're talking about there just is miles away from what we do I mean Rayan was available in January, he's now in the Brazil World Cup squad, I think he scored four in four Premier League games in a row didn't he? Kruppi has scored against Man City, Arsenal and Man United this season, like he's a 19 year old striker like some of the players at Brighton have got like it's just, we're nowhere near it like we're just as you say and we're not even buying the best of the rest we're buying the sort of the average of the rest aren't we like the best of the rest is when you go and do what man united did and you sign emblema and cunha and then you get third like we're just getting the sort of teams that are you know targeting players as you mentioned you know like colin mohani was sort of average at ditto right a duvet obviously psg was a massive flop at psg and and then and Tottenham thought that's our guy.

25:47Jack:Yeah. Well, we're going into this massive game against Everton, which I can't even fully process, to be honest, Matt. I can't believe that we're here on the final day of the season. One point to survive. Pitina are a very competent side. Can we talk about change for Tottenham? Sure. You know, I understand the sentiment is to get behind the team for the 90 minutes and then whatever happens, give the ownership hell. is that is that right yeah definitely that is the intention which obviously is not an ideal situation going into the last game of the season um but i think one thing is really really clear and it's been very clear for a long time now is that this season tottenham fans have prioritized getting behind the team in a way that should never ever be forgotten i think if you listen to that away end at chelsea where the two no down listen to the away end at astonville i listen to the home stadium and you know in the recent run and in particular fans have really really stepped up and i really hope that people aren't taking it for granted in fact it was only really james madison against chelsea that has been the one to come out and say it explicitly we could have at least had a bit more from the club i think in that tottenham fans have massively massively stepped up in this run and i think it's been unbelievable it's been sort of sort of you know and again that really should not be taken for granted because it's not normal you know the away ends went well everyone takes the piss as well but look at the look at the forest turnout look at that you know as much as people want to take the piss about it and we'll say that you know it was misjudged or whatever that's still 30 000 people that have shown up to a team that's on the brink of relegation you know exactly to welcome them in and if you want if you look if you look at the sort of the comparable teams that are in the relegation it's not normal like this you know the west samoyans are not like this tottenham fans have massively stepped up and they prioritized getting behind the team which is exactly what should happen of course and exactly what you would hope that the board would realize that you know this fan base is something special It's not normal to this kind of loyalty and this kind of support.

27:40It's not regular. Please don't take it for granted like they have done before. But that has made it really difficult to protest at this time because obviously that is the main priority, as it should be. And the fact that we're in this situation in the first place is ridiculous enough. But it's made any kind of protest really, really difficult because fans have obviously chosen to prioritise the team, as we all have. The ideal situation would have been if we got a point versus either Chelsea or one against Leeds, we had two scenarios ready to go where we think right relegation battle is over we could all have a big protest against everton unfortunately had everything ready to go post chelsea all the preparation all posters or everything ready to go because we thought we might must be able to nick a point at the bridge or must be able to get you know a win against leeds or whatever and be safe but sadly didn't happen so i had to move to pivot to a second plan which is get behind the team and then protest after the game it's not ideal you know it's difficult to protest after the game because you know in general people leave after the game and stuff like that but at the same time there's just this kind of feeling that we can't let them get away with the season right like this has been absolutely inexcusable i'm not talking about the players i'm not talking about roberto deserve me talking about the board and the ownership here what has happened this season is inexcusable on every single level and they're very lucky that fans have chosen to prioritize the team because there is a world probably a world in like europe italy turkey places like that where they wouldn't be allowed inside the stadium fans would not allow them to be inside the stadium.

29:03If this was like an ultras team or, you know, they're lucky that the fans prioritise getting behind the team rather than making it very, very difficult for the owners. Because there is a world where, you know, they shouldn't really be allowed to step foot in that stadium without being really, really hostile, to be honest, for what they've done to this football club.

29:20Jack:Do you think it's going to be like that, though, in the Everton game? I don't, to be honest. I don't know. Because we have seen fans go for the directors, but what's it, the Forest game? Yeah, I just don't, I'm not sure that our fan base is like that in general. Maybe if we get relegated, maybe, who knows what will happen if we get relegated. But, you know, they're just very lucky that the fans just are massively getting behind the team at this point and not being angry at the owners, which is, you know, but it just means there's a very, very limited opportunity for those two things to coexist.

29:51So it has to happen after the Everton game, which is not an ideal situation. But at the same time, it just feels like we can't leave it this season without saying something at least.

29:58Jack:I think, look, we'll talk about the bad path in summer if it happens, because I think if Spurs go down, it immeasurably changes the complexity of the conversation for next year. Yeah. But let's assume for now that Spurs stay up. We get our draw or we get a win, heavens forbid. Did you see that sort of thing that was going on yesterday where it's like there are nine possible permutations and only one of them Tottenham get relegated in? which reminds me of Dr. Strange in Endgame being like I've seen 14 billion different permutations and there's only one of them which we win in. But look, if we do stay up, right, big things have to change.

30:40Jack:Something has to change a couple. This is two 17th place finishes in a row we're looking at, right? That doesn't happen by accident. Let's start with like Langer and Venkateschen. As much as it's going to be difficult to find somebody else to fill that in, do you get rid of them both? Do you get rid of one of them? Because it feels like a head needs to roll at least. There needs to be a statement of intent here, doesn't it? It's baseball, but so much more. Go bananas for banana ball with ESPN on Disney+. 31:59Jack:The Eastern Conference Finals continue on ESPN and ABC. New York is fine. Tomorrow morning is knocking. Stock your fridge now. How about a creamy mocha frappuccino drink? Or a sweet vanilla? Smooth caramel, maybe. Or a white chocolate mocha. Whichever you choose, delicious coffee awaits. Find Starbucks Frappuccino drinks wherever you buy your groceries. I think personally both have to go. Just because I think the messaging has to be very, very clear that what's happened this season can't happen again. What I think will happen is probably Langer will go. He's probably going to be the patsy that gets it, which is probably possibly a little bit unfair because, you know, it's not just his fault.

32:40He's obviously massively inept, not capable of running a club of this size, not capable of driving the recruitment, not capable of creating a vision. If you look at that evidence of that, look what happened to us in Villa since he left. Look what's happened to us since he joined. So I think he will go. Vinay Venkateshan I think should go, just because, again, I just think we need to send the message from the very top level that this season is inexcusable on every way. And I think keeping anyone around that was involved in it sort of sends a message that maybe it was acceptable i know what i can foresee a situation where they say well he came in for daniel levy no one was expecting levy to go mid-season there's a difficult role to fill blah blah blah blah and they'll probably keep him but one of them at the very minimum one of them has got to go for me i think both have got to go i just don't i just i also just don't don't think vinay is a fit for this football club like he's just particularly like the arsehole thing was never really gonna wash was it i mean in reality that you can't have someone that closely linked to Arsenal for that many years and then suddenly joined Tottenham and everyone forget about it and it's just this era has been so unbelievably bad and it could be the worst in our history if we go down that I just think we need a clean break from all of it because

33:51Jack:I mean Christopher Manwet is a Q &A so he said if we stay up and keep Johan Langer his relegation next season inevitable but like sort of to your point on that one Bill is that I think that is look you know I'm very angry with Langer and whatever the management of the side to a degree but I think to place it all on his shoulders probably is unfair and it would also let Enoch off the hook if we just saw it that Lang has been sacked great all of our problems are solved because I think that's that's that's far from the case yeah I think they planted the seeds for that already when they said that um back in Eagle Tudor when Eagle Tudor was appointed they said Enoch are not getting involved in the appointment they're leaving it to Lang and Vinay which is to me basically that if it goes wrong we're gonna fire them yeah exactly yeah um luxy at cheson lakani says do you both feel the culture of the club has gone so away from success on the pitch that it is beyond repair i don't think it's beyond repair but it feels like look look at arsenal i know we've spoken about them a lot but people forget sort of the actual doldrums they were in it the tail end of wenger and you know emery and stuff like that right i think with football you You can make bad decision after bad decision after bad decision, but if you make a good decision, then suddenly things change really quickly.

35:06And I think a good decision will be getting people in that know the football club. I know everyone would have seen the Toby Aldevaro quotes this week, but we need to get people in that actually know Tottenham and what it is and what it means to be Tottenham. And it goes a long way with the fans. It goes a long way with the culture of the club as well. Even just in a small extent, just having people like Sandra involved when De Zerbi came over and stuff like that just makes a big difference because the fans know actually people that know, you know, people that they trust and know what they're talking about.

35:33I think it's very clear that Langer and Vinay just are not that. So it feels like if they're at the head of our footballing success, then it, you know, is irreparable. But all we need to do is get rid of them and then just get a strong director of football. And we're just absolutely crying out for someone that can actually direct the football club. And, you know, anyone that watches, you know, the women's team, the Spurs, like they've turned it around incredibly this season because they've got a strong director of football and they've got a strong manager. And things can change overnight. It happens at Arsenal, you know.

36:06You know, they look at them in the Emery versus what they come to now. You just have to get the right people involved. And at the moment, we have the wrong people. So until that changes, yeah, it does feel like it's irreversible. But reality is in football, you know, look at Man United. They get rid of Ruben Amarin, they hire Carrick, and suddenly they're third in the league. And now they're probably thinking, well, maybe we can go for a title in the next couple of years.

36:25Jack:If people didn't know who you were, Bill, and they just saw a video of this, they might think you were humble bragging about the Spurs women's manager being exceptional there. It's a bit of a doppelganger, mate, I've got to say. Yeah, I know. I'll take it. He's a manager he is. I'll definitely take that. Michael at Dyer Spotless Bo says, an alternate reality football TV series, think Dark Matter, Man in the High Castle, about Tottenham. You travel via a little door under a dirty pub sink. what's it like over there can we have somebody write up the show as a mirror for the as the fa pgmol i mean let's be honest me and uh behind the curtain me and um me and jack talk about this kind of stuff all the time off off air we're always like pitching ideas like this together and it's just like i just think the top we've we spoke about it so long i mean like a tottenham style black mirror type thing it's just we've got to do it one day like there's just but this is like the classic um you know i remember the the thick of it um i remember armando me and she's saying like you can't parody this government anymore because it's too ridiculous like stuff that they wrote in the thick of it now it's just like reality and tottenham feels a bit like that now isn't it you don't need to like a black mirror up tottenham it's just we're living it we're living it right now it's kind of like what's what's happened i don't know if you've watched all of the boys or anything yet but that's sort of you know there was there's the tenuous sort of parallels between like trump and homelander and all that type of thing but by the end of it it just kind of got more and more ridiculous because it felt like you know i mean how can they as you say how can you parody something like sort of trump anymore or anything like that in a in an earnest fashion like vinay would be it's like just a classic sort of black mirror character isn't it comes straight out of arsenal your direct rivals gets takes takes over arsenal win the league and tottenham almost get like that is a black mirror storyline all over it's just like yeah and the fact of being that this was an entire job like it almost has to be at this point that he's like kicking up to like just these random faces on a screen nick butcher some crypto bro who knows nothing about football yeah do you know what i mean like on a yacht somewhere it's in miami or whatever like succession mixed with black mirror army like the lewis family like the lewis children are just i don't know as jack pitbrook always says and he wrote an article about it like we don't even really know who these people are josh king says what's your actual strategy for dealing with this summer if we go down and they complete the double do we all just become those people that say i suppose i support x team but i don't really follow football anymore um spur supporters need a game plan here um well first of all i think we're lucky that it's a world cup year like that'll take a lot of the the conversation immediately will go to the world cup right like it'll just that'll just something that will happen so that's useful um winning the league you know i can at the beginning there's loads you can get around it with enough copium i think if they win the champions league as well i think i think we just have to at this point that's it like football is finished we're done and done if we get relegated i'll win the double of the champions league i think it's probably time to find the new sport for us all it's just there's no there's no real there's no coping with that is there like i think even like you say even england winning a world cup seeing harry kane lift that i'd be like yeah so what so i've lost all interest in england as well you know i used to watch it when harry kane was here but even that is now painful as well just because it's harry kane doing it so there's no real upside for us as a winning one um this would be an interesting one mate dan at hixie dan says apart from bail which retired ex-player would you back to do a better job than color moani do you know do you know what i've been looking at like i've been looking at jermaine defoe doing punditry lately and i mean he was playing into like his 40s and he still is like in proper good nick do you know what i mean like i don't i don't know how close he is to 50 yet probably not that close but he's he still looks unbelievable 40 he's only 43 to be fair but i did see um have you seen this sort of new new way that uh or this new path that andros townsend is sliding into selling like indoor glasses and talking about circadian rhythms and stuff but while he does it he does look in fantastic shape so i reckon andros towns over to a job for us right now i saw him he was like cooking this and yeah i'm not saying this with judgment it's just it's interesting isn't it he was cooking like this um he was basically saying how can you incorporate organs into your children's food because it's so good for them and was like making it was just this like big grotesque bag of like organs and stuff and i get it i know there's conversations to be had about our wastefulness of meat and all that type of thing i'm just saying on a surface level it looks kind of gross yeah that's apparently the same with like the sunglasses as well like apparently that's actually genuinely backed up by science but just it feels like he's not doing it from a pace of science he's just doing it from a pace of like do you know what i mean like crackpot so i'm you know yeah i think the things i think there are like the same of like circadian rhythms and stuff i think there is legitimate truth behind some of the things that he's saying but i'm not sure that's why he's doing it yeah who knows it's sort of it all it It all blurs into one sort of thing now, doesn't it?

41:27Jack:I would definitely take him on it against Everton on Sunday. Andros. Yeah. On the road. Oh, yeah. Okay, Andros. I think he's still playing. I think he's playing in Thailand. He's also part of the World Cup team as well. I just saw he got announced yesterday. Is he? He's quite a good pundit, actually. Yeah, I don't mind him. I think he's all right. Let's just have a look just quickly. Let's just get it on one last. Okay, let's do this for the last one for the day. James Reid says the biggest questions I have relate to how we find ourselves here and how if we stay up we ensure that this never happens again right now though Sunday is the centre of the Tottenham universe simply put do we have enough quality to get a result against Everton and how high does this fixture rank in the 144 year history of the club I mean it's definitely well up there it must at least I mean you could make a case for it being the most important ever I mean in terms of like it's like how the Southampton thing that happened yesterday and the day before it's like people are saying that's the most like expensive fine in the history of the sport but just because the sheer financials involved if we get relegated versus if we don't there's you could make definitely make a case it's the most important game in our history i know people will say well you know champions league final and games where we won the league games where we won the fa cup and stuff like that are more important in terms of like gravity like this has got to be up there i know we've been relegated before and stuff like that so people will say that you know it's happened already so but if this has got potential to cost like 350 million pounds the club so it's got to be well up there and in terms of that bit of the question we do have enough to get a point against everton like there's no doubt about it it's just the problem with it going into the last day it's just such a lottery right and i'm just i i'm i'm dreading it i'm dreading it every single waking second at the moment because i just i know in my soul i just know that weston i'm going to get an early goal i know that's going to happen and that news is going to reverberate around the stadium and then suddenly i was going to get i can just foresee that happening and everyone's going to have their phone out it'd be like you remember like the classic it's 1-1 at Newcastle but this time actually everyone will you know nowadays people have their phones so people actually know what's going on no everyone's going to be half watching their phone half watching the game it's just going to be a horrendous experience but we definitely have enough to come out of it with a point but it's just it's just ridiculous that our fate of our football club is essentially now like a dice roll because literally anything can happen on the last day of the season billy it's been an absolute pleasure mate thank you very much and uh godspeed It's worrying, isn't it?

43:49The next time we do this, we might be in the championship, which is an absolute mental thing to say. Let's hope not. Let's hope not, my friends.

43:56Jack:Up to Spurs, come on.

44:07Look up!

Jack is joined by Billie T to dissect yet another miserable defeat at Stamford Bridge, kicking things off by trying to make sense of the latest refereeing controversy. With images clearly showing the ball was in play for the penalty that wasn't given, we vent our frustrations at the officials before confronting the harsh reality of our own underlying numbers. Spurs once again displayed a total lack of quality upfront and in the final delivery. This leads into a painful discussion about Randal Kolo Muani, debating whether he will go down as one of our worst ever signings and what his failure says about the utter lack of care in our recent scouting and transfer policy.

Attention then turns to Sunday and the terrifying prospect of the biggest game of our lives against Everton. Knowing we only need a single point to secure survival, we discuss the sheer dread of relying on our rotten home form against a competent side. We examine the recent statement from Change for Tottenham calling for total support for 90 minutes followed by a clear message of discontent towards the owners, before asking whether executives like Johan Lange and Vinai Venkatesham should be sacked immediately if we stay up, or if that would set the rebuild back even further.

Finally, Billie tackles a brilliant and bleak selection of the listener questions we managed to squeeze in. We explore coping strategies for a doomsday summer scenario, debate if the club's culture is genuinely beyond repair, ask whether keeping Johan Lange makes relegation inevitable next season, pitch an alternate reality television show where Tottenham are actually functional, and wonder which retired players could genuinely do a better job leading our line right now.
