In short

The episode is a wide-ranging football discussion mixing England’s World Cup performance with Tottenham transfer talk. Topic: England’s tournament expectations, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane’s roles, and Tottenham’s evolving recruitment under Roberto De Zerbi, plus debate over Daniel Levy’s departure.

Guests/backgrounds

Connor Mummery and Jack (co-host). They speak as Tottenham supporters and analyze tactics, squad selection, and transfers.

Key claims

England’s excitement is lower when expectations are already high; last night’s England performance was their best in years, with Bellingham framed as a “top 10” big-game midfielder. Kane is praised for becoming an “all-action” forward who drops deep to create space and supply runners. Tottenham’s recruitment is described as “ahead of the curve,” prioritizing utility and ball-progressing defenders rather than only deep-lying passers.

Notable examples

Bellingham’s goal; Kane’s two goals and slide tackle-to-cross; Jed Spence’s rapid World Cup cameo; Vuskovic (Croatia) criticized as looking exposed/slow at 19; Van Hecke’s £50m deal defended; Daniel Levy criticized for “pants pulled down” transfer negotiations; Sandro Tonali linked as a desired Modric-type profile.

2:03Jack:Hello everyone. Welcome back to Rule the Roots podcast. Connor Mummery. Is it coming home, mate? Is Jules Romay still gleaming? 60 years of hurt. It's hard to argue against, isn't it, after that? after that, Ansi and everyone else look a bit shite, to be honest. Yeah, you know, I definitely, like, get into the swing of things. I'm somebody that, like, coming up to this World Cup, I've been, like, not that arsed. Maybe two days before the World Cup starts, I'm gagging for it. You know, like, I love it. I love being, you know, in the throes of a World Cup, matches, highlights all over the shop. um and you know i would say that like coming up into this one i haven't been that excited about england i've just sort of had this like sort of feeling that like they're actually quite i think the point i want to try and make is that like i think a lot of the excitement often comes um with football in general when you sort of hope your team does really well when you think we're quite good and we might actually do quite well but it feels like i don't know from the fans and definitely from the players there's a sort of level of like i would say look and i know i'm sure any scottish irish or welsh listeners um will not agree with this but probably not after this um but i feel like there's there's a level of like healthy expectation with this england group that they should actually do quite well so in a certain way it seems almost less exciting until we get to I guess the business end of the tournament do you know what I'm saying yeah well it's completely shifted from early Southgate hasn't it where you know that was so enjoyable because we didn't have any expectations after Hodgson and 2016 and then getting to the semis of that World Cup in 2018 um which I know you enjoyed I've seen pictures of it Jack um I was working yeah yeah it looked like get you had a fertilizer in your hand um yeah so going into a tournament with expectations is is very different and it's felt like that the last couple of years i would say euro 2024 didn't quite have that same feeling going into it as 2018 and then obviously following on from that uh euros in in 2021 going into it with an expectation of actually doing something is it's obviously a very different feeling.

4:29I was with you sort of with the feelings similar to that before it started, but I think they looked like properly, properly bang up for it last night. I think it was the best England performance I've seen for probably a few years, probably since Germany in that 2020 Euros. And yeah, just sort of being able to sort of flex the squad and then bring in those substitutions on in the second half, which all, you know, all played well when they came on. um rogers sacker rashford yeah that seeing that sort of does make you appreciate quite how good the squad is even though there's obviously been a lot of debate about uh the players left at home do you think we maybe like as a country or at least as a football

5:12Jack:premier primarily premier league watching kind of football populace maybe don't actually appreciate quite how good jude bellingham is but yeah jude bellingham is because we're not exposed to him unless you go looking for it unless you watch like unless you're one of those weirdos that actually watches la liga for fun or the bundesliga previously it's sometimes i don't know i just i i guess i'm guilt i just sometimes forget that like we have probably one of the best players in the world playing for us in that position because he's he just he's ludicrous every time i i don't know if you saw i don't know if you've been watching any of the rest is football i i don't really listened to the pod but i've been enjoying the netflix world cup show um and they were having like a debate on there as to whether you play morgan rogers or jude bellingham and i was thinking what you're on about like morgan rogers is a good player he's a good player very very good player i hate the idea of arsenal getting him but i mean jude bellingham's like is it overstated he's like i don't know top 15 top 20 maybe top 10 in the world like no no like He was obviously brilliant last night and he's just a big game player, which is something you obviously need in a World Cup.

6:21Yeah, the debate going into it all was about him or Rodgers and it was genuinely quite split sort of leading up to the World Cup, which sort of leans into what you were saying about I'm not entirely sure people know quite how good he is if they only see him every couple of years. But I mean, you'd like to think that debate ended last night. I mean, Thomas Ducal said it was a hard decision, but he's going to say that. yeah after this tournament I would say it's going to be it's going to sound as ludicrous as dropping Kane or dropping sorry Declan Rice or someone like that he's obviously going to be one of the first names on the team probably for a long time

6:58Jack:22 years old do you know what I mean I think that's another thing people forget how young he is to step into the cauldron of Real Madrid as well and again kind of command his place as one of their better players he can do a bit of everything as well like he was properly again stuck in yesterday like the amount of tackles he was flying into and one where it was sort of on the on the wing for that Kane chance at the far post um they didn't quite go in but sort of a great slide tackle to win the ball then put a sort of cross on a sixpence for Kane uh yeah it's just one of those all action all action midfielders and like you say Morgan Rodgers obviously a great player but it's a very different mold and I'm not sure it's entirely what Tuchel wants from someone someone who plays where where Bellingham's playing in that midfield it's interesting and to make this i guess to make this just a little less in england centric um because i appreciate like not everyone listening to this cares the thing about bellingham is there's you know there's been a lot of conversations about tonali about the type of players that spurs are linked to the type of profile of players that people want to see spurs sign it all tends to come down to this idea of like a deep lying progressive passer you know it's the conversation sort of shift right spurs don't have any progressive passes well you know what about james madison what about chevy siemens oh no no not those ones we want more like deep alone we want adam whartons or whatever but you kind of you look at like this england team right and i had a good conversation with baker about this the other day as well you look at this england team you look at kind of a lot of the noise that surrounded tuchel's decision making with the squad that he did choose but again i kind of look at this and i and i do sort of reference or what baker was saying about like deservey ball about the way in which football is moving and i think part of like what excites me a bit about this england team is it it feels like it's ahead of the curve it feels like tuchel has created one of those teams that is essentially all action on the sides all utility through the center um which look you know a lot of people at least the idea of that doesn't sound that appetizing doesn't sound that appealing where's greelish where's foden where's cole palmer where's that kind of spark in the center of the park but when you kind of realize that it is more like you say these sort of all action utility players you've got bellenham in there you've got anderson you've got rice who are probably well who are the three best that england can do for that all action role and you wouldn't you wouldn't sit there and say any of them is christian ericsson or kevin de bruyne in terms of being a sort of progressive passer or anything like that even though they can all do that type of thing um it's just it's just interesting it's interesting seeing this the way in which football is kind of evolving right now in front of us um and as such maybe we need to start to update our own opinions as to how things are supposed to look and how teams are supposed to click and work right does that seem fair yeah i mean i i can't really remember and it may not be a good example because tottenham have been shipped quite a while but um a passer in that mould that everyone's sort of craving.

10:02Like you said, deep-lying passer. I can't think who the last of those would have been. I mean, obviously we've had players like Christian Eriksen, but that wasn't necessarily his role at all. James Madison. Yeah, I think that's been the reason for quite a lot of the... which is bizarre that there has been backlash to being linked with Sandro Tonali, but I think a lot of people want us to prioritise having a passer in there. And I just think if you are Tottenham in 2026 on the back of two 17th place finishes, and a player, an elite player like Sandro Etanali comes along. Just because you have a few players in a similar mould, obviously not on his level, doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't, you know, just jump on something like that.

10:41And it doesn't mean that we then, you know, won't sign someone in that mould, a passer, that people want. But yeah, I just can't quite get my head around people who would be adverse to a signing like that for Tottenham. It makes me kind of wonder what people would be saying about

10:58Jack:a young Luka Modric where he's playing for Spurs now because yeah it's one of the finest midfielders the game's ever seen and you could make a case that a young Luka Modric would actually be the perfect antidote for not the antidote but the perfect sort of fit for that direction now that we keep talking about the one that football might be going in but Luka Modric is one of those players you feel like you could put him into any system and he'd just he'd flourish did look like time was catching up with him a bit last night to be fair yeah you know it's we've seen it with Ronaldo obviously not with Messi yet but let's see when Messi gets a game against with all due respect a sort of tier one nation let's see how he does then but he looked pretty good the other night somebody else who looked pretty good last night unless you're listening to Diddy Harmon on RTE last night was Harry Kane just miss him Con oh yeah I just miss him mate I miss that that header for his second the big Utschel you know just yeah he looks don't you think he looks he looks so lean right now he looks like he sort of changed his body makeup he was he was always he's never been a lump but he was always a bit of a tank wouldn't he a bit of a sort of physically imposing centre forward he looks a lot quicker and more agile doesn't he even than the year didn't I know he wasn't fit in Euro 2024 but he definitely does look a lot more agile and he gets about the pitch a lot better you know obviously that was very much an all-action performance from him you know we know he likes to drop into midfield, you know, helping out the defence and spraying passes and doing everything that he was as well, on top of scoring two goals.

12:33Yeah, it's all right, mate.

12:34Jack:We've got Dominic Solanke. That's true. Look, you know, I've got to say, like, for all this kind of me trying to, like, dip my toe into the tactical waters, there's a little bit of me that feels like Dominic Solanke might actually thrive under De Zerbi Ball if he can keep fit. I do like him. I was just, yeah, just doing comparison. You were just, you were just being, you were flippant, weren't you? I wouldn't be surprised if we don't bring in a striker. It just doesn't seem to be on our radar at the minute, does it, in terms of seeing players we're linked to in the positions. A sort of number nine doesn't really seem to be something we're actively looking at.

13:11We might well be, but everything we seem to be linked with at the minute is obviously we've brought in defenders, we've brought in looking to bring in centre mids, wingers. So it might be that Dominic Zalanc he does get a go. So the main issue with him has been fitness, hasn't it? So it might be completely irrelevant if he's out for six months again, which is frustrating because I thought there were definitely glimpses and periods in his first season where you could see how much he could help the team when he was fit. I think he didn't look particularly fit at all when he came back in January this year.

13:44But if we can keep him fit and get him to some of the levels he showed in, you know, Andrew's second season, his first season. He could definitely be a player. Ten World Cup goals

13:57Jack:for Harry Kane now. That, you know, that puts him in similar esteem to Thomas Muller, who played an additional World Cup. Harry Kane's played in three World Cups, ten goals. So, you know, same as Thomas Muller, same as Gabriel Batistuta, same as Gary Lineker. He's overtaken the likes of Roberto Baggio, David Villa, Carl Heinz Rummiger, Christian Vieri, like some great players. Obviously, Lionel Messi, Mirosav Klossa at the top on 16. Look, I mean, Kane, for what everyone wants to say about him, he needs to turn up in the knockout stages. Again, if you go through history, Lionel Messi, two goals in World Cup knockout stages, one goal for Harry Kane, zero of goals for Cristiano Ronaldo in World Cup knockout stages.

14:49Jack:So quite honestly, we always said it ourselves, one of the greatest footballers to have ever played, not just Tottenham players, not just England players, just one of the greatest footballers of all time. We'd all seen it with our own eyes. Nobody wanted to listen to us. Thus, how galling did you find it to see a panel of people talking about how Harry Kane has switched up his game from just being an out and out number nine at Tottenham to this like evolved all action player at Bayern Munich. Vincent Kompany had a vision for what he could be. I mean, it's just, it's unbearable in it, mate, seeing that sort of thing.

15:27Jack:It really is. Imagine buying your kid a toy only to find the batteries aren't included or buying furniture, but missing the tools to build it. Frustrating, right? Like, he's also England's record scorer in knockouts in tournament football, including Euros. so I think the opinion of him would be very different if and you know his performance in the two Euros finals we've got to haven't been great but neither of England's but if you know if you look at the you know the 2020 final when it did go to a penalty shootout and he scored his penalty he did it but if if others did their bit would that make Harry Kane a better play necessarily no it wouldn't yeah I couldn't believe that last night I mean he's been doing that for the best part of a decade now to be honest outside of his first couple of seasons obviously nowhere near as much as he's doing now after yet he didn't you know showcase his passing ability as much as he's done the last few years you know it's been a very very much a regular thing since since since Mourinho was in charge really we saw glimpses of it before um but it's been a good five years now that that's been such a big part of his game um dropping deeper and sort of showcasing his passing getting stuck in helping out on the defence so to see that I mean there's a reason him and Son broke the record together for partnership in the Premier League to see now Vince and company being given the credit for sort of transforming Harry Kane into this all action player that he is now is yeah it's ludicrous if he was called Canino you know he'd get there he'd get there and I think maybe maybe more people are seeing it now because you know he's a team who are you know who often go quite far into the Champions League but he's just playing in a much better team now than he has done for you know maybe the best part of a decade so he's obviously going to look better in that when he's got better players around him and the things he the things he does are going to be more noticeable when they come off I can sort of see why a lot of people might be properly sort of clocking quite how good he is for for the first time now but um yeah I think we've known for quite a while Are you like, when you watch it down the pub con and you're, you know, you maybe had two or three beverages.

19:07Jack:And you hear somebody shout from behind like, get in the box when Kane drops back. Do you feel that need to not even address them, just sit there with your beer and just sort of shout into the thing. It's what he does. Do you know what I mean? That conversation still goes on, doesn't it? Why is he dropping back? Because he's fucking quality. He's the best passer in the team, that's why. As he was at Tottenham. Yeah. and as he is at Bayern Munich. It's not, you know, and when you've got the sort of the forwards that we did last night and when you look at players like Saka and Rashford coming on, Saka not so much nowadays really doesn't quite have that burst of pace that he used to have since his injuries.

19:46But when you're looking at players like Maduaki Gordon and Rashford, you need Kane to be, to be one, dropping back to create a bit of space for them and someone to find, find the runs that they're making because nobody else is capable of doing it on that level.

20:02Jack:I'd love it if we got Rashford. I know we've sort of been tenuously linked, but can you imagine that? It's a proper franchise player for Spurs in respect to he's got that huge image. I think it would give everything a lift, but just as a player, I think he's just quite... He's incredible, yeah. I mean, obviously he's got a 40 mil release clause, so that's not the issue. It's just the wages, isn't it? Because he's on 300 grand a week, which I doubt he'd cut to join Tottenham at the minute. maybe that's part of our new structure and part of our you know and part of us changing under the Lewis's getting in a play like that it'd be incredible and 40 million is ridiculous fee for someone of his quality it sounds like he must stay in the Premier League he's not going to go to Liverpool or City they're not allowed to activate his release clause he's got the link with Villa I guess yeah that's the thing but are they going to be able to could I mean Man United want him gone permanently there's you know there's some talk that Carrick might sort of give him pre-season and see how it goes but it feels like Rashford's done it Man United Villa would give it a go but again can have they got the capacity to sort of pay that 300 grand a week Barcelona obviously spent money on Gordon who plays the exact same position spent a lot of money on him so I suppose he is running out of options somewhere Arsenal have been linked as well which would be frustrating but you know if they're going for Morgan Rodgers you could see that as well you could see that yeah yeah you could see it yeah I wouldn't like that because I do like Rashford and I'd like to continue liking Rashford.

21:29Yeah, it would be incredible. But I don't know, I just can't see us. I know we're paying Conor a lot of money, over 200 grand a week, I think. And we've obviously offered players like Robertson and Sinesi big money to come to us on a free. Obviously, they would have had chances to go elsewhere, probably to teams that finished above us in the league. So I think we are changing in that mould in terms of the wages, but I just feel 300 grand a week for Rashford might be a bit of a push for us

21:59Jack:sort of I have that little worry that Gallagher is going to be that new Ndombele for us just that player that's there on massive wages that we're never going to shift from this point because let's see what he does under Deserbe he might be able to utilise him but he does just feel like he feels like that rash decision that was made in January to try and save things without probably giving it enough thought which is after December but also on last night you know well done Jez Spence World Cup debut nearly nearly nearly got in there didn't he nearly got in there that was a great run to set that up as well he is rapid I think it was I think it was Billy T saying I don't ever I don't think I've ever really made that link that Jez Spence is that rapid to be honest yeah he is I don't think we've seen it much have we maybe that's you know the way we've been playing with the handbrake on quite a lot this season obviously but we've definitely not seen anything like we saw last night when he came on it was only 10 minutes but I thought he'd have really good and really dangerous and you can see why why Tuchel took him he's one of those that you know a lot was made of the squad when it came out and a lot of people were baffled to see Jed Spence in there um obviously with you know players like Lewis Hall um Maguire being left out Jed Spence sort of stuck out and people were sort of hammering that a bit but to have someone like that with that pace who can play both sides and he is you know one side of it is when you're chasing the game using his pace to sort of try and break the lines and burst forward and one of it he's a really good defensive fullback on both sides so he was never going to start in this world cup but for someone to bring on in the last 10 minutes who can play the other side I think it makes a lot of sense um but I thought he looked really good last night yeah he did and I don't know it's one of those things it's like to me it didn't really make sense that again there's sort of the the consternation over him getting picked for an England team like he's you've got a very limited squads that you can choose from he's supremely versatile he's like he's well versed and experienced in playing both right and left back for tottenham he is that modern kind of fullback wing back in terms of he can maraud up either wing he can deliver he's tenacious he's not scared of a big event like it made total sense that despite having and i've criticized him this year i think he's had a fairly so-so season but tottenham have in general um i think i think he's a very good player and it's going to be it's going to be interesting to see what happens with De Zerbi um I'm just sort of talking just sort of thinking about like some of the players we've been linked with and everything like that maybe hints at the fact that Spence isn't isn't fully in his plans but we'll see we'll cross that bridge when we come to it and there's nothing really concrete to suggest that he wouldn't want to play him um somebody that is not in Roberto De Zerbi's plans at least for three or four years is Ljkovišković, who started for Croatia last night.

24:50Jack:The 19-year-old sensation. Obviously, he's been subject to a 35 mil bid from Brighton this week or last week. There's a lot of excitement about this lad, and obviously he's got a unit around him that wants to see his career progress very, very quickly. I'm going to go out on a limb though Con and say like I kind of see where De Serbi's coming from I felt like he looked I felt like the game passed him by last night if I'm being honest with you I'm not denying that the lad's got a lot of talent said Stafford Bloor talk about spoke about it a lot on View from the Lane this week saying that one of Vuscovic's big strengths is that like he's dedicated to improvement the Vuscovic that started the Bundesliga last season is not the one that ended it he was in a much better place He was, you know, working on areas of his game that people were first highlighting.

25:46Jack:But, you know, when you're playing against players, like we say, Kane, Bellingham, you know, even the likes of sort of like Gordon and Maduweke. Like these are top draw Champions League season footballers, right? And I just thought Voskovic looked a bit all over the shop, mate. I think he showed his age quite a bit, right? And he was also playing in a three as well. So there's more protection there, really. So to be exposed in a two in the Premier League, which it looks like we're going to play, is a massive jump from playing for Hamburg. No offence to Hamburg. Is there any Hamburg listeners? Seb Stafford-Bloor.

26:25So, yeah, he's not quick, is he? So I think, was it the Bellingham goal? You saw him, and he's not going to get much quicker, is he? if he's 19 now this is sort of as quick as he's going to get the thing is you don't see many teenage center halves playing regularly in the premier league starting for a club i know we finished 17th twice starting for a club with ambitions of sort of challenging again for the european places it's very rare that you see a sort of teenage center half um as a starter in the premier league at that level a bit baffled as to why he sort of thinks he should be starting or i think a lot of this is the people around him to be honest by the sounds of it i'm not i'm not I'm not going to go at Vuscovic as a person at all.

27:05I think a lot of it is representatives. But, you know, when you look at the players, we've got obviously Boynton Van Hecker, we've got Sanessi, we've got Van Der Ven, a player like Danso. I can't see how, even when he signed, and obviously he was only 17 when he signed, did he think he'd be starting in the Premier League at 19? Like, it's just quite a strange one. And I can't see why he'd be so adverse to another year on loan. because, again, he's 19. To, like, I don't know. I just, I think a lot of this is probably his representatives, his cachet is obviously huge at the moment. I think they might, if he goes on a loan again and he struggles, who's going to be sort of bidding 35, 40 million for him if he's, you know, if he doesn't, if he doesn't kick on as people expect him to, there's obviously loads of potential there.

27:55So I think they're just keen to cash in when they can and get their payday his representatives that is I mean it's either that he goes on loan again and it might not go well or he stays at Tottenham and doesn't play I don't think we're going to be getting these offers in in a year's time so I think a lot of it is his representatives while his cachet is as it is trying to get trying to get the payday

28:18Jack:basically do you think that there's a part of me that feels that we haven't heard the last of like the Brighton thing. I know at this point in time, they've offered 35 mil, Spurs have asked for more. They've said they'll halt their interest at that point, but they're still in the background Tottenham working on a deal potentially for Verbruggen as well. From Brighton, it's been said that De Zerbe really, really wants him. I bet. Well, we got Van Hecke over the line, so, you know, I don't know. If there is a growing relationship there, at least with Brighton, um it might not be the last we've seen of it is all i'll say but you know there has to be either there has to be either a buyback or a massive sell-on i would i would say or alone you know with with an option i think if if it gets to 40 50 mil i wouldn't be surprised if they if they okay it which is kind of yeah for good money you know when we got him for pennies and he hasn't played a game for us and he's still 19 um it would be a shame because obviously there's a lot of excitement around him when we signed and obviously people have been keeping tabs on him this season at Hamburg and getting excited you know I think a lot of people thought up until a month or so ago that he was going to come straight back in and play for play for Spurs regularly I think that's just been a bit of a reality check for him and you can obviously see where deserve is coming from a 19 year old centre-half obviously needs a lot more development a lot of centre-halves don't you know don't necessarily peak at all until they're mid to late 20s it's not a position that you regularly see teenagers or or really young players playing regularly in Premier League well this is it isn't it because you know there is that talk that Deserby says he's three four years off it he's talking about him being 23 at that point do you know what I mean which is still young for a centre-back it's uh it's it it is quite wild and I think to like to your point it's uh Spurs for whatever anyone wants to say about us we're not that too bob in in the in the respect that Like we can't just incubate like a young player, have them playing for his first team and not actually achieve anything.

30:19Jack:Because for as good as everybody says Brighton are, what do they do? What do they actually win? They never bother anybody in any competitions. Great, they're this supposedly well-run club. They identify talent really well. But what they do with that talent is sell it off when it seems to start peaking. So look, I'm not taking away from their talent ID, but the point I'm trying to make is When we look to teams as Spurs fans, when I see a lot of Spurs fans sort of idolize like Brighton and the way they do stuff, what do they actually achieve other than putting money in the bank for Tony Bloom? You know, that's kind of how I feel about it.

30:55Jack:It's not to say it's the end of the road for Brighton, like they're sort of getting incrementally better. But it's just, I don't know, there's an interesting way of looking at things. I just think, again, Tottenham's place in the order of things is quite different. But yeah, we got the here we go for Van Hek. Van Hecker, Van Hek. I seem to hear some sort of difference between the two. I'm, to be honest, I'm buzzing about that, mate. Like, it's not my money. Don't care if he's only got a year left on the contract. We'll get on to Daniel Levy and all that sort of thing. But I'm just talking about more like from fans and not just Spurs fans.

31:28Jack:Other people are sort of making fun of Spurs for spending that amount of money on a player that's got a year left on his contract. Look, we wanted to get in ahead of other people. We saw what happened with Mark Gay. You know, he was another player that we wanted. We didn't pay up. January came. City are like, yeah, go on then, we'll get him. I would wager that if we waited till January to try and get Van Hecker, that's when a Liverpool or a City again comes in and says, actually, you know what? He's one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League. Let's just get him for cheap. We've paid a premium, but for exactly that, like I've just said, one of the best centre-backs in Europe at what he does, which is progressing the ball from the back.

32:06Jack:which is a hallmark of the way in which Roberto De Serbi wants to play. I don't think there's anything to be wound up about here, is there?

32:36Jack:18+.

33:06Jack:York. You thought this was your Run Club era. Turns out it was more of a thinking about Run Club era. The good news? Someone's marathon training is about to start. Sell your workout gear on Depop. Just snap a few photos and we'll take care of the rest. They get their race day fit and you get a payout for trying. Someone on Depop wants what you've got. Start selling now. Depop. Where taste, recognises taste. And I really don't think 50 million is that outrageous at all, to be honest. People have just... The market is the last few years. You're not going to get a top player for much less than that, are you?

33:49Really? 50 mil?

Read the full transcript

33:50Jack:I don't really think the outrage. It's a new 30 mil, isn't it? It really is, yeah. I mean, Liverpool have signed a young centre-half from Rennes, I think. He was joining in this summer, Jeremy Jacquet, for about the same. Man United signed Lenny Jorreau for 60 mil. I just don't really get the outrage at paying 50 million for a player like Van Hecker, who's obviously worked with the manager. The manager really likes him, wants him as part of this project. And we've gone and got him without any fuss, you know, before the transfer window opened. We've obviously got players like Sanessi and Robertson on a three.

34:24So we've still only spent 50 this summer. I think it's quite obvious Christian Romero is going to be off. So I think we'll get a decent whack for him as well. All Tottenham fans have ever wanted. and what we didn't get under Levy was sort of, well, staying with our top targets, just paying what people want us to pay. And we haven't necessarily done that. You know, the reports when we were first linked with Van Hecker was 70 mil, Brighton wanted. They've got 50 for him. So, yeah, I'm excited about it. I think he's a good player. Obviously knows Van de Ven well. So knows the league, knows the league, as they all say.

35:01Jack:He looked top draw the other night against Japan, I thought. Yeah, he's obviously a really good player and he's one of the best passing centre-backs in Europe, which is, as you said, exactly what Roberto Dezerbi wants. Hence, bringing in players like him and Marcos Senesi. It's very clear what we're going for. We've got, like you said, one of the best players in Europe at that, you know, in the middle of June for 50 mil. I don't really get people saying how that's too much when you see what players go for nowadays. Last summer, Newcastle spent, I think, 110 million on Johan Wisser and Alanga. They spent 80 million on Volta Marder.

35:40I'm not picking on Newcastle. It was just an example of his premiums, the transfer fees you have to pay these days to get things over the line.

35:47Jack:Also consider, like you say, Sanessi. Again, when you look at certain statistical models, one of the best players in Europe at doing what he does again. It would have been 40 or 50. Yeah, yeah. Type of those players. That's another 40. So we've got the two of them for 50 mil. 25 mil each. It's nothing. It's peanuts. Yeah. It's peanuts. Not peanuts though, according to Daniel Levy, who, if you're to believe Ben Foster, read a text from Simon Jordan, sort of off air on TalkSport. Simon Jordan looked a bit miffed that Ben Foster had mentioned that Daniel Levy texted Simon Jordan to say god this feels like fucking playground doesn't it he texted him and said this said that um but apparently Daniel Levy has said that Tottenham have had their pants pulled down by Brighton the funny thing is though this has had the complete reverse effect that I think somebody like Daniel Levy was probably expecting in that it's just completely revealed the mindset and the mentality of a bloke that has squandered world-class player after world-class player world-class manager after world-class manager because and hasn't learned anything from it no and just plays absolute bollocks nonsense without a chairman right well you've got to look at the essay last summer what we've done is we've gone in and got it over the line and paid maybe five mil more than we might have wanted to get something over the line i mean you've only got to look at you know like newcastle or that munoz from asasuna who liverpool will just pip them to these things can happen so and that happened a lot to Tottenham Hotspur um so yeah the fact that he hasn't learned seemingly learned anything there was quite a lot of there was a bit of revisionism and I agree with it partly in that people saying basically he wouldn't have let it go on this long with Frank he wouldn't have appointed Igor Tudor that sort of thing so there was a bit of pining for Daniel Levy this season um given how bad things got but yeah you've basically if I mean this could be all bollocks by the way but if this is true um and this actually did happen you can see that he's not changed and he wouldn't have changed if he was still here um and it looks like tottenham have changed the way they operate with these sort of things so it does doesn't it like you genuinely i mean the jury is still out on the lewises on yeah van kateschen on johan langer but if we if we're to sort of shelve everything to this point keep it as like you know context at the back of our minds but look at what tottenham are actually doing now they're doing everything that we've wanted them to do for the last decade it's an early in the transfer window which is alien really and paying up to get top players which we never really did and daniel levy these things dragged on and on and on over you know not much money um and i think yeah it's just completely put it to bed in that was it the right decision to let him go and move on you know you can argue that it wasn't in that there wasn't necessarily a capable replacement um for someone like daniel levy and it is sort of more sort of committee now and you might argue that the footballing expertise isn't quite there but i think it made it quite clear that you know we don't want someone like daniel levy in charge of this sort of thing anymore and it's a good thing that he's gone i like i was glad that he was gone at the time and i i didn't really buy into any of the sort of provisionism around like Tudor and all that type of stuff that you were talking about.

39:09But I think this whole conversation,

39:12Jack:everything that we saw come out yesterday, again, like you say, it could be total nonsense, but if it's not, it's just such a, it's like a wave of relief washing over me. Sounds a bit dodgy. But a wave of relief washing over me to think that he is gone. He is not the person in charge of it. He is not the person that Deserby is banging on the door of his office saying, why haven't you got on me Van Hecke yet? And he's saying, well, because if we push it into after the World Cup, if we push it into the start of the season, we might be able to get him for 40 mil, which is what Daniel Levy did summer after summer after summer.

39:49Jack:How many seasons did we start, Con, without having made the signings that we needed? How many seasons did we start where the team still looked underbaked? It still looked underprepared because we hadn't gotten the players that we needed to get in. We lost Luka Modric and we haggled over Moutinho for an entire summer, the perfect replacement for him. Never got it done. And all that promise that we built fell to pieces. Then Bale ends up going. Do you know what I mean? It's that same sort of yo-yo effect time and time and time again. Never ever building, never striking while the iron was hot. It was, you sort of feel like just from this one flippant line, this ton of had their pants pulled down, just feels like It was all him.

40:35Jack:It was all him. It was all him and this nonsense, like I say, these sort of dick-measuring contests with other chairmen. The line was that you cannot do business until after an international tournament, which we just all sort of told. We're like, yeah, fair enough, it must be hard. Van Hecker played three days ago at the World Cup. Liverpool have just signed this kid from Spain who's in the Spain squad, gone over there, done his medical, and that's done. If anyone had their passport down, it was Levy for Harry Kane, I would say. Yeah. 100 mil for who is arguably the best player in the world i still and you know we gave them 35 40 of that back for matthew's tail um not long after the more you see harry kane season after season the more i think we did get our pants pulled down you see you know players like i don't know they they paid what chelsea paid to get someone like enzo fernandez for for harry kane 100 mil 90 mil i know he had a year left at the time i don't care i don't care i think he had his pants pull down Harry Kane um and I'll never give him well it was just there was always that feeling wasn't there with Levy that yeah it was all well and good like when he was like this upstart when he was like a young chairman buying players like Lennon, Huddleston, all that sort of thing from clubs sort of less down the food chain and Spurs were firmly like a mid-table aspirational European team at that point.

41:53Jack:That's what we needed at the time wasn't it? Yeah exactly but as soon as Spurs did establish themselves at the top table even if we were the one ones that were waiting in waiting in line till all the other big teams ahead of us had taken their best trimmings and stuff if you like from the carcass he never really adapted to life at the top did he do you know i mean playing these sort of petty games like you say with other big with monsters with monster chairman billionaires that run these other clubs that are ruthlessly competitive and everything he just didn't even seem to be able to play nice you know and i and i'm sure don't get me wrong i'm sure Or there is a level of, you know, whatever, anti-Semitism and stuff like that that comes with a lot of the depiction of Daniel Levy.

42:37Jack:You know, when we talk about him being a, you know, a difficult or a penny pincher or all this type of thing, you know, it's like, well, I think a lot of chairmen at this level act in a fairly similar way to how he did in terms of wanting what's best for their club. But it felt like there was just that bit. And I don't know if it was from a place of, I don't know, an inferiority complex or something like that. I'm not going to fully psychoanalyze the fella, but still it just felt like he just sometimes just could not get with the script he just do you know what i mean like we're talking about now with this van hecht deal sometimes if you want the player your manager wants the player you just as a big club so-called big club you just pay the money and you just get it done sure it's not ideal sure we know you don't want to pay 50 odd mil for a player that's only got a year left on his contract but it is what it is you pay it you get it done you get rid of the circus around this shit and you move on as a football club he just seemed either unable or unwilling to do that and you know like we say we sort of i'm going around in circles with him but it's just again the amount of reports what was telling was the amount of reports sort of around the gibbs white and sa deals last summer various chairmen coming out anonymously obviously to the press and basically saying we won't do business with that man anymore which I think was a massive part of why he did get let go.

43:56He was holding us back in that way. And look, Daniel Levy spent$110 million on Solanke and Brennan Johnson. Obviously, Brennan Johnson's a legend forever now and we love him. But was that not having our pants pulled down a bit? 50 mil for Brennan Johnson, 60 mil for Dominic Solanke? He went and paid what those clubs were asking for those players at the time. And again, I don't want to go too much into this in case it is absolute bollocks. I don't know why Simon Jordan would make that up. He seems like a lovely man.

44:28But yeah, it's very, very, very strange.

44:31Jack:Are we going to get our pants pulled down by Newcastle for Sandro tonight? Or are we going to get our pants pulled down by Manchester City, who have entered the Sandro Tonali race? Apparently they're worried about the future of Rodri with Pep Guardiola going. It's funny how as soon as Manchester City have entered the race, a lot more of those third party if you like voices who were all saying what are Tottenham doing spending all that money on Tonali he's not that good suddenly went quiet didn't they very much so yeah that's obviously I get one Newcastle fans would be annoyed at the prospect of a club like Tottenham who's just finished 17th twice coming and picking up one of their best players it was you know the likes of Aston Villa and stuff getting involved which they did for Conor Gallagher as well um in you know basically chucking us in with the likes of chelsea and city you can do what they want and get away with it um which is just total nonsense it's bollocks yeah and it always has been this debate happens seemingly every time we we look to spend some money uh the fact that we can still spend 80 odd million on a player after finishing 17th twice we completely ignore the fact we've been in europe 18 out of the last 21 seasons we've been in europe the last two seasons in terms of revenue obviously we're we're massively eclipse the likes of villa and newcastle we are where we are because you know for most of the 20th century up until you know the new stadium we were very very very careful um we did things the right way we you know the first team to sort break the original top three top four without cheating basically without being state backed um and you know it was basically from that point that quite a lot of resentment grew to to tottenham um as soon as we started you know people seem to think we've got ideas above our station and we should just go back to being mid-table mediocrity which um you know we were for a lot of the 90s uh as soon as yeah Tottenham started sort of biting at the heels of the big clubs a lot of sort of neutrals weirdly sort of turned against us um and you know the likes of Villa and a lot of Newcastle fans not all of them and a lot of this shite is just people on Twitter arguing but the way they act when Tottenham do these things compared to like you say Man City going in for Tonali they'll be like oh yeah obviously that's fine um but when Tottenham try and do it and they can't really seem to understand why they even understand why a player might like to join a club like Tottenham Hotspur from Newcastle um yeah I mean I think he's quality and it's not it's not just like non-Spurs voices saying it's like there's a lot of people I to be fair I don't think I've seen many people actually question his quality most of the reservations have been around his function or Spurs already having players of his type within the squad but to me that's a bit like you know i don't want a steak i've got a packet of beef and onion hula hoops in the cupboard you know it's like it's good to be fair to be fair yeah different different different kind of things to different occasions but you know just this i think number one the sort of the sense that we've already got players of his profile i mean baghdad they're nowhere near as good as him no i mean this is just it i just i'm not i'm not going to pretend and I'm not going to be gaslit into feeling that Sandra Tonali is not top class that every single time I've watched Newcastle be it against us or when they've been playing against Arsenal or something like that that I've literally sat there every time I've watched him and thought I love Tonali I really like him as a player I really wish Tottenham had a player like him and as I've said on here before there's just there is the shade of like a Modric type player about him that I quite like I'm not saying exactly the same but there's something about the the way he just kind of gets into the mix, the way in which he moves the ball around nicely is just, it appeals to me a lot.

48:13Jack:He feels like quite a Tottenham player. It's somebody that I really would like us to sign because I think it's, and it's not just about that on-pitch function, right? It's about the message that it sends. It's about the fact that Spurs are here. We are backing De Zerbe. We are being ambitious. We are ready to spend money. we're ready to essentially become the club that we've built with this stadium with this profile all this sort of thing we're not just going to limp along meekly anymore and just have people make fun of us for staging Beyonce concerts and stuff but not actually trying to win football matches it looks like we're trying to do everything and I just think you know if that's if that's who the manager wants just do it study and play come together on a Windows 11 PC And for a limited time, college students get the best of both worlds.

50:21Zootopia 2. Now available on Disney Plus Rated PG. Yeah, I don't agree with the argument at all that we've got. too many similar players already to spend money on someone like him we might have similar players in terms of profile and things like that but none of them are on his level or anywhere near it to be honest you know two of them are young lads in grey and burgwell who in a few years time might be you know hopefully approaching that level um obviously what perhaps are he looks like he might be off um kind of gallagher but if like i say if an opportunity like this comes and because of you know his relationship with with deserve be a player of that quality seems up up for it despite finishing 17th twice it seems like an opportunity you can't really pass up because we have gray berg valsear and gallagher um you know a couple of who i wouldn't mind seeing the back of this summer and maybe we will um but to pass up the opportunity for someone like that to join our club and like you say it is it isn't just what you can do on the pitch it's the message to basically the rest of the league um of you know what we what we want to be doing and where we want to go in terms of bringing bringing that that level of player in there's been a lot of revision and revisionism from newcastle fans on twitter on him basically saying i shit anyway why would you copy him though in it and basically every one of those tweets you you go back as a lot of spurs fans have done three or four months and they're saying he's the best material in the league and stuff like that so um it would be incredible i don't want to get too excited about it because I wouldn't be surprised at all if he just goes Man City and they slap 100 mil down and that's that.

51:56Yeah, one to sort of go deeper into, I suppose, if we do get it over the line. But yeah, I think it would be incredible.

52:02Jack:What else do you reckon we need, Con? If we are sort of chucking money about, what do you really want to see Spurs sort of do? Where do you want to see us strengthen? Are there any actual players in particular that you'd like to see us spend money on? I think the defence is in as good a position as it can be at the moment in terms of who we brought in. So I don't think it'd be there. Definitely left wing, massively. I would say, obviously, you know, we do have young players like Helen Odebeer. Obviously, Odebeer's out till January anyway now. But I would like us to sing, obviously, we've spoken about Marcus Rashford, a player of that level or a player basically in their prime.

52:49in that position, you know, for someone like Mati Sel to learn from and, you know, rotate with in certain games, but definitely a top-level left winger. I'm unsure on the keeper. I think, you know, Vicaria... It's a difficult one, isn't it? Vicaria obviously looks like he's going back to Italy, which is fair play. I think that's the right time. With Kinski, after Atletico, he hasn't put a foot wrong at all, really, you would say. I think he was absolutely incredible. I think massive credit for him to basically us still being in the league. I'm not sure if we would be if, you know, last season's incarnation of Vicario was playing all those games.

53:28I think we might have been saved by a hernia. Kinski really didn't put a foot wrong. He looked brilliant. I don't know. It's a tough one. As someone like Bart Verbruggen, I'd rather just keep Kinski. I'm not massive on Verbruggen. I don't think he's great. I think he's a bit flappy.

53:39Jack:He didn't look good against Japan. I'll be honest. I was quite excited about the idea of Verbruggen. And not really excited, but more just again, like, look, if this is who Deserbi wants, just get him for him. But then watching that Japan game, I did think, oh, hang on. Yeah, I'm not messing with him. So, look, it's not... We do have Kinski, so I don't think it's... You know, if we do have a certain amount of money we can spend, I'd rather spend it on a proper starting level left winger and, yeah, a centre mid or two, be that. You know, someone in the mould of Sandra Etanali and then perhaps looking at a pass.

54:16So, you know, we've been linked with someone like Curtis Jones before, who I'd be banged up for, to be honest. I think he's a good player. Definitely takes a lot of those sort of pass and metric boxes that people seem to want. If we can get someone like Tenali and then get someone in that mould in the midfield, then great. And then I think, yeah, keeper is one that I don't think it's necessarily... I think we'd have to probably bring in another number two, like a decent level number two. I'm not sure Brandon Austin's going to be at the required level to be a number two in the Premier League for the entire season so if it is Kinski and we are backing Kinski, I can get on board with that to be honest as long as we bring in a decent number two but yeah, definitely left winger and centre mid for me Connor mate, it's always a pleasure

55:03Jack:is there anything else you want to talk about? World Cup? Tottenham? Football? I think we've done I think we've done alright I think we've done alright oh come on did you watch a game in the pub last night nah working mate working till midnight working till midnight for a lot of this a lot of this thanks America I mean I have been enjoying it but I'd enjoy it a lot more when there's a 5pm game as well as an 8pm game or 9pm game you've got tonight Bosnia-Herzegovina and South Africa in it yeah I mean don't get me wrong I will watch every minute of it but yeah I am definitely enjoying it but the days where there isn't a game until 9pm and obviously that's the only one you can watch really if you do have a job um not slugging off anyone who doesn't have a job crack on um so i the qatar world cup was great in that there were games at 10 1 5 7 in the group stage i absolutely love that so it's not quite the same in that way but yeah i'm enjoying it i'm enjoying it just chucking beer over your own head then last night yeah on the sofa yeah she's out everywhere yeah yeah she's just you see that every it's getting a lot of people are digging out the croydon box park because they did a big beer i mean it looks horrible mate it's a group stage man it's the last minute we're in a semi-final then chuck a pint of stella over my head exactly for the group stage it's about for a retaken penalty as well how much money do these people have yeah no i won't be watching the ones that i'm not work and I will not be watching at Box Park but I will be watching at Pub, yes.

56:35Down the old rubber dub dub.

56:40Jack:Con, much love brother. Thanks for having me, Jeff. Much love.

Jack is joined by Conor Mummery where the lads kick things off by checking in on England’s World Cup campaign, celebrating Harry Kane reaching 10 tournament goals as he puts Croatia to the sword, and reflecting on his legendary status. Attention then turns to young defender Luka Vuskovic’s recent performance, evaluating reports of friction between the youngster and Roberto De Zerbi, who reportedly feels the teenager is still a few years away from first-team readiness.

We celebrate Jan Paul van Hecke officially getting the "Here We Go" confirmation, before breaking down an incredible bit of off-air drama on talkSPORT. With Ben Foster revealing that Daniel Levy texted Simon Jordan claiming Spurs "had their pants pulled down" on the financial terms, we question if this confirms years of suspicion that Levy’s obsession with "winning" negotiation squabbles has held the club back—and whether the hierarchy are finally moving differently.
