In short
Tottenham’s Carabao Cup exit to Newcastle at St James’ Park; what it suggests about Spurs’ squad/project gap; debate over backup goalkeeper Alfie Kinski vs Guglielmo Vicario; criticism of Brennan Johnson’s form/role; broader Spurs recruitment and player sales; Q&A on Harry Kane’s potential return.
Guests
Billie T (host; Spurs-focused podcaster, records from Scotland during half-term; also posts TikToks like Son “tier lists”); “Adam Nathan” is cited as a Twitter voice (not a guest). No other guest is present in the transcript.
Guest backgrounds
Billie T is a long-time Spurs fan and football commentator/podcaster; he references his own social media content and Spurs history knowledge.
Key claims
- Newcastle was the “worst possible” draw; Spurs were semi-rotated and still outplayed, with two “soft goals.”
- Spurs are “further behind” Newcastle; Newcastle’s midfield and squad quality (Marech/Tonali/Gordon/Livramento/Lange) are ahead, reflecting years into Eddie Howe’s project.
- Kinski is data-good with feet but lacks basics: poor crosses/positioning; flapped at the second goal; likely limited to a few FA Cup games.
- Brennan Johnson is misprofiled (not a true right winger; more striker/10/box-crasher); output has been poor; Spurs should be more ruthless selling expensive underperformers.
- Xavi Simons is still adapting; Spurs’ attacking system and injuries limit his impact.
Notable examples
- Kinski’s chipped pass leading to an attack (only standout), then two goals blamed on him (especially second).
- Johnson’s missed chances/“spooned” delivery for a goal kick; comparison to Kudus improving the same positions.
- Harry Kane: host predicts ~75% chance of renewing at Bayern; cites his scoring/assists run and Champions League prospects.

1:47The giant German heads the second for Newcastle. And the Gallagher 10. Hello, everyone. Welcome back to Rule the Roost podcast. Billy T, how are you, mate? Let's not talk about football. How are you, first and foremost? You doing all right, mate? I'm very good, my friend. I'm very good. It's half term. I'm in a different country. I'm in Scotland. As I record this, I had an eight-hour drive yesterday to Scotland. unfortunately timed it so that i got there at the same time as the game which was uh a terrible timing in hindsight but yeah very good just trying to ignore all that and focus on being in a nice new country for half term what are you up to you seeing like you're doing the highlands or anything like that ah i think we're just gonna do we're gonna go to aberdeen at the weekend gonna go see the sights of glasgow today so yeah buzzing and more importantly mate how are you i'm all right it's it's an adjustment if uh if my babbling post-match podcast last night didn't kind of you know attest to it is an adjustment period but i'm loving it i'm enjoying it you know have you tried um have you tried her on mic yet she's got a well she's got a patron maybe for the she was she was in the background actually last night um on on the good patron series that's it yeah exactly the uh the the lack of sleep tapes um but no very good i think what is it people sound like i'm feeling very blessed there you go so you know that's that's all good let's talk about football let's do that no actually no one other thing i want to ask you actually quickly up front i've uh you've you've kept this a bit quiet mate but i'm gonna i'm gonna chuck you in the deep end now you've started doing like tiktoks haven't you i have mate what's going on there tell us what it is yeah i just i started doing a couple of um i think it was about it was one of the school holidays shock horror in the school holidays of course it was about i think it was the the may summer holiday uh last year and started doing a few tiktoks um just chat absolute rubbish on there really that's about it i'm liking the ones i'm liking the ones you've done so far there's some real like thought there's real planning going into i like the son the son tier list that you did um how many played for spurs 42 which is crazy right 45 of all of our players in history have got son in their name somewhere um and now that this tottenham have literally releasing the name of every single player and then there's endless material there somewhere where is it just same it's the same as it billion score t people can follow you on i think it's billy t 1882 and i try i don't i don't tweet about it because i'm trying to like i'm experimenting trying to like grow it um organically if that makes sense i'm trying not to be like oh go and follow me on tiktok i try to like um well this is post on there and see what happens this is like what i think they call this like blow over this this type of like this this is this is semi-organic traffic so yeah yeah exactly that's fine i'm trying not to like i'm trying not every time i do a tiktok to be like oh go and watch this on tiktok i'm trying to like see if it actually has its own merit which is i'm like everyone else i'm just um absolutely obsessed with a tiktok album at the moment i'm sure everyone is it's absolutely locked in just constantly scrolling on there i see you always surf that who's that who's that bloke that he'd like just yeah he's always abroad and he's always currently in brazil as well for anyone who's different ladies yeah if you don't know how i mean to go on just go on tiktok and search journeyboy82 he's an absolute i don't know how you would describe him like a degenerate uh i think degenerate's a good one yeah degenerate druggy basically who just travels the world samples lots of different um he's currently in brazil so yeah really really good content i mean i don't want to be libelous but i would i would largely suggest somebody i'm not saying of him but somebody with a comparable lifestyle is highly likely to be involved in some serious level crime oh mate he um he literally is and he um what he does he gets really smashed really late at night posts videos about his crime and then deletes them in the morning so yeah oh yeah he's trust me he is well involved in the crime scene it's a bit different to when i have a few best takes about a goalkeeper a top of reserve goalkeeper and think i'll delete that in the morning so i can't be bothered for the blowback you know yeah and last month he um he went super viral because he was at like a really moody house but i got stabbed in the neck so and then he got stabbed in the neck and tick tocked it live so there you go is that in brazil no it was in england yeah there you go um spurs went out the carabao cup last night i'm uh i don't look as i said last night i don't ever like to see tottenham out of a cup competition i want to see us win as much as we can but equally I'm not going to pretend like I'm devastated.
6:25I don't think we got the squad to juggle the amount of competitions that we're in. I'd like to see us try and win the FA Cup. I'd like to see us go deep in the Champions League. I know whatever mentality and stuff. Like I say, I don't think the squad's in that place yet. And I actually think we played all right last night. I actually think we're all right. To me, it was just a case that, unfortunately, the better team won. How did you take it? Yeah, pretty much. That's pretty much how I would summarize it as well. So I think for me, as soon as we got that draw, I thought it's over. Do you know what I mean?
6:57That's just horrific. It's almost the worst possible draw you can get because the bigger teams than that, Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal, are all going to rotate more than that. If you looked at the team that Arsenal and Liverpool put up, for example, they're heavily, heavily rotating. Newcastle, obviously the holders, and they want to win this again. And I knew that they wouldn't rotate as much. I know they still did some rotation. plus with the fact that it's just a horrific run for us to go to. We have a terrible record there plus just the fact that they're a really horrible team to play against away.
7:28As soon as they got that draw I thought it's pretty much the worst possible draw. I think we did alright. We probably let down by two really soft goals. I know we'll probably talk about it a bit more but I thought Kinski was really poor for both goals actually and it's actually funny because there were times when we were actually opening them up a little bit and creating chances But for me, that was over as soon as we got the draw against Newcastle away. It's just a horrific round for us in general. There's so much bad memories there, isn't there? Particularly over the last five, six years or whatever.
7:59It's just a horrible place to go. Look, I'm not trying to be a doomer about this. I'm just trying to be quite realistic about it. Do you think, as much as we've obviously got our sights set on wanting to catch up with Arsenal, wanting to catch up with Liverpool, City and the like, Like, do you, I couldn't help but look at last night and the fact that we were pretty routinely dispatched by Newcastle, I would say, and we both, we were both fielding sort of semi-rotated teams, right? Do you think we're a bit further behind, quite a bit further behind Newcastle than we'd probably like to admit or say to sort of loudly in terms of squad, in terms of project, all that type of thing?
8:46I think so. And I think you can sort of attribute that to the fact that there's a good number of their players that would instantly improve R11 by quite a considerable way. So their midfield, for example, is just leagues better than ours at the moment. It's a joke, isn't it? It's a joke. Marech and Tonali would be two of our very best players. And they've got Gordon, Vltamada and Lange. They've got a great set of backs. But I guess what they're sort of, they're years deep into the Eddie Howe project. And obviously they have, you know, limitless owners, but who can't quite spend. But they still do.
9:17They spend as much as they possibly can while sticking to PSR. But they do have unlimited pockets. So I guess they're a lot further down into the project. So there's no reason why they would be. I guess for Tottenham fans, it's difficult to swallow because we just, in our heads, we're a bigger team than Newcastle. And, you know, we have always had more chance to break into that top four than them. But I think the fact is they've got a really good manager and a really good project. And they've got a squad full of really good players. Anthony Gordon and Walter Marder, I think, are brilliant. And Tonali, I think, is an absolutely outstanding player as well.
9:47He was brilliant yesterday too. I agree with you. I do think Howe's good. But I also, like you say, when I look through their squad, I can't help but feel he might be something of a bottleneck in a way. Because I do look at them and I think, I don't really see why they shouldn't be troubling Arsenal right now. I think they're really good. I think they've got some really, really good players. And the point I sort of wanted to make is, if anybody thinks I'm kind of trying to be negative by comparing us and Newcastle right now, is that it actually made me quite hopeful for this Frank project and the direction that Spurs are heading in.
10:30Just in a respect, I do think we went up there and we went toe-to-toe with them. We gave them a game. I think we faded in that second half. But like you say, we did actually put together some pretty decent passages of play and gave a good account of ourselves, which I don't think we have done for the past few years up at St. James' Park, like you say. You know, it's not been... It's been smashed down, isn't it? It's been horrible, hasn't it? You know? Whereas last night, I think we did all right. And, yeah, we both rotated. that um i just like i you know i just want to mention it again for no real reason but that watermada is he's such a good player like he's he's so brilliant um it's kind of frustrating in a way do you remember and this might be a little bit before your time but do you remember luca tony back in the day i do from uh from all the world cups yeah and that's that's that's as far as my knowledge goes yeah just i also remember him on fifa actually yeah yeah just like gangly presence who's like really strong and the ball is just like stuck to, like it's magnetic there's a couple of times where he turned us inside out as well they call him the three metre Messi don't they I quite like that, that's decent but yeah I thought it was a decent performance, we did alright we do have to talk about Kinski Vicario Leo has obviously, you know, he's had his critics, myself being one of them this season.
12:02Past few games, he's definitely shushed a few of us. He's been very, very good, but there has been this sort of clamouring for Kinski. Let's see what he can do. He's really good with the ball at his feet. Some talk about his attitude or aptitudes, perhaps not really impressing people behind the scenes. But regardless of that, you know, the League Cup is an opportunity for players like him. And I was happy to see that Frank did give him a chance. Because it must have been quite a big call when Vicario is in the sort of form that he has been in to take him out and to put Kinski in. But I think it was a fair and right decision.
12:45He wasn't very impressive, though, was he, really, if we're being honest. And I know it's harsh. He doesn't get to play that often. but for me it was quite a few Adam Nathan said it on Twitter I saw Adam Nathan say that he uh he's really good with his feet but he just doesn't seem to make saves which is pretty crucial for a goalkeeper you know I mean are we are we sort of you know is this a rash judgment do you think Bill or do you think it's right I have a few sort of like you know red flags over him right no I think that's definitely right I think there was a there was a moment in the first half right at the very beginning when he was really under pressure and he absolutely pinged this chipped pass into the midfield and we started an attack from it.
13:25I thought, oh, that is so incredibly useful for a goalkeeper to be able to do that. But that's really kind of the only thing that he can do. And when he's so poor from crosses, but maybe that is an age thing. He is really, really young for a goalkeeper. He's 22, isn't he? But when you're playing particularly against a team like Newcastle, particularly against a really physical team of really brutish footballers like Newcastle have, you're going to get come undone. I think it's a really difficult situation to be in because he's probably going to play a couple of FA Cup games and that's it this season now.
13:58He obviously won't play in any of the Champions League or Premier League games. So this was his real big chance to make it more of a conversation between him and Vicario because it has started a conversation with Vicario at the beginning of the season. I think that conversation is probably now finished for the rest of the season at least after this and the fact that Vicario has been a bit better lately. It's just a really unfortunate opportunity as a second-choice goalkeeper when you're playing for Tottenham. Because for now, not in the Europa League, we're in the Champions League. He's probably going to have three games more this season at the most.
14:30So I think I'd be really disappointed that one of his big chances, he had a really poor game in terms of the two goals. But I think when you do see his kicking, his kicking is such a useful attribute, but it's just not quite good enough. It's not quite as a strength enough when you can't do the basics of, you know, coming for a cross and catching it and stuff like that. He was really bad for the second goal, I thought. Yeah, terrible. Coming out, not really committing properly, flapping at it. And I know Walter Marder's great. We've just been talking about him and he's always going to be a real danger in those sort of areas.
15:03But a keeper, even a young keeper who's kind of finding his feet should be doing better than that. You know, he's still a professional. You know, he's still a professional. it's paid a hearty salary. He's not that big either, is he? He doesn't fill the goal that much. And that's such an important thing. You don't really see many small goalkeepers. You've got your Pickford and stuff like that. But Pickford's an outstanding presence in the box still, even though he's got his... It makes you appreciate how good Lloris was when he was at his peak, doesn't it, really? Yeah, it really does. It really does.
15:36And Vicario is a massive guy as well, isn't he? He's just got that presence about him. Kinski doesn't really have either of those things, so it's a bit of a struggle. I don't think this is the end of him or anything like that because he's still an outstanding young goalkeeper it's just I mean it's probably a little bit harsh in hindsight chucking him in the Newcastle away isn't it it's probably the worst possible fixture that you can play as a young goalkeeper but at the same time if he has any sort of ambition of usurping Vicario then you can't make mistakes like that second goal I think the first one is probably harsh to blame him but probably could have done a bit better but the second one was definitely on him I think I think we definitely got to get another keeper in though as well somebody else that's going to be more competition for them I almost feel like Kinski needs to go out on loan I just I don't know if he's of the quality there where he is you know and I would let's put let's put it this way if if Vicaria picks up an injury this season I wouldn't feel uh overly confident having having Kinski in goal and I don't I don't think that's really we saw it last season didn't we as well when he did come in when Vicario was injured it was a bit of a struggle wasn't it so you can say what you like I mean I didn't even realise Newcastle had signed Ramsdale me neither I actually did not have a clue that he was there yeah I know he made that one brilliant save there against Sardin and that's the kind of difference isn't it yeah and I mean because that's the thing isn't it like Pope's Pope's a really good goalkeeper and then you've got Ramsdale who is probably you know I hate to say it probably of a fairly comparable quality to somebody like Pope of a fairly comparable quality to somebody maybe even like Vicario.
17:14You know, it's two good options that they've got. So... Kinski is like your classic, your absolutely classic data-driven signing, isn't he? Like he's... So what they've essentially done is gone, right, we know Apostol Koglu at the time is our manager. He likes to play out from the back. Let's go and find, look at the data and find someone who's absolutely outstanding at playing from the back. Obviously, the problem when you do that is you sort of negate the other factors as well. and he is incredible with his feet, don't get me wrong. He's exceptional with chipping past over the top and that would be really useful even in a Frank team.
17:45Thomas Frank plays up from the back as well, so it would be great, but unfortunately you can't, as I always think with the whole data thing, the eye test is just as important these days and you can't, I don't think he passes the eye test as a goalkeeper at the moment. there was a little bit of chat on uh on blue sky last night mate um and i you know i don't really have a dog in this well i do have a dog in this fight i i i think it's an incorrect opinion but i'll i'll put it to you um there was a bit of talk on blue sky last night that uh spurs maybe look a bit more cohesive as an attacking unit without mohammed kudus in there and i believe the theory that was put forward is that because Kudis is so good the tendency with us is to just give the ball to him and hope that he does something with it as opposed to all the players around him or all the players that make up that kind of attacking quartet if you like or having to try really hard I mean I don't agree I honestly I don't agree but is there anything in that for you at all?
18:58No, I don't agree with that either. I think that's incorrect as well. I just think when you've got a player who is so unbelievably useful in attacking, it's a bit like the kind of argument that at the beginning of the Postacoglu season when we were like, oh yeah, we're scoring more goals without Kane now. We're a better attacking side without Kane. And then that kind of argument quickly shows itself as being absolute nonsense, doesn't it? When you have a player that is, I'm not saying obviously Kudis is as good as Harry Kane. Of course he's not. but when you have a player that good, you have to find ways of making the system fit them.
19:29I don't buy that at all. I've kind of found that if... I'm sure we'll probably go on to talk about Brennan Johnson in a bit more detail in a minute. Just dive in, mate. Do it now, honestly. If that was Kudus and they're getting into the position that Johnson was in, I don't think we'd have been 2-0 down. I think we'd have easily got two or three more goals out of that. I think Brennan Johnson is good at being in the right place at the right time, but his output is was quite poor yesterday again. I think he's got unlucky once, I think. It actually might have been Palinja, I think, in looking back to it.
20:02I haven't really studied the game. It was a pretty dismal game. I haven't gone back and watched it. I actually do think it was Palinja that put a really good cross in for Richarlison. He didn't get on the end of it. But I think if you swap Kudas for Johnson there, having a quality player like Kudas is just going to bring so much more fruit than I don't buy into that fact at all. I thought Brendan Johnson, again, has really struggled the last couple of games that he's played. I think it's interesting He's been horrible Horrible Yeah he's been He has There was that one where I think Xavi was running with the ball He put it on a plate for Johnson On the right Right hand of the box With Charleston's in the box I think maybe a couple of players In there He just like spoons it out For a goal kick Doesn't he It's just like The quality of Johnson Is really lacking at the moment I think And to say that we look better About Kudus I think is a crazy shout To be honest Do you think Johnson is the type of player That Look Emotional side Very grateful to him for Bilbao, all that type of stuff.
20:56But if we've been sort of hard-faced about it, is he somebody that's on the chopping block for you in terms of we don't need... I think what I'm hoping that the Lewis family do from this point is they back up a bit of their big talk. And that big talk isn't always just about signing good players. It's not just go out and get Anton Semenya or Wharton or somebody like that, right? part of it as well is realizing that, you know what? We've, we've, we've given a fair crack of the whip to somebody like Brennan Johnson or to Richarlison. Let's just get them out the door now because it's, it's, it's, it's not quite working.
21:38They're not of the required level. Let's move them on. The world's biggest soccer tournament has arrived and you can trade the entire tournament on Calci on Calci. And we're live on match day as Doug reaches for a buffalo wing. He's got it. Oh, and he's gone for a can of Pepsi, too. What a finish. There's no doubt about it. It just tastes better. Match days deserve Pepsi. Without a doubt, mate, I think that's got to be done this summer. And it's a shame, you know, he will go down to, you know, folklore as being for that moment and that season where he scored lots of goals. I think the biggest problem of Johnson is he's been massively misprofiled by two managers in a row now.
23:37I think Ange just about got away with it by playing on the right wing. Because a lot of Ange ball was obviously him arriving at the back post when the left hand side crosses and he scored loads of goals that way. now he's sort of carried this right wing thing onto the next manager where he's actually playing more as a traditional winger he's not a winger at all this guy this guy is not a winger he's a striker or like a box crasher or like a I think he even played at number 10 for Forrest at times this guy is definitely not a right winger and we persist on playing there so I do kind of have a bit of sympathy for him because he does have some you know when he's running through on goal or when he's arriving at the back post he's a brilliant player he's definitely not a right winger that's going to take on a man and cross it I'm not sure how he's been badly misprofiled now under Frank as well.
24:17It's like he cannot play there. It's just a real shame. But I do think, you know, if you look at Tottenham historically over the last 10, 15 years when we've had good players or they've made a slight wane of form, like for example, Ben Tunker, you could attribute to this, who I do think has been good. Just players like that who we've never really got rid of at the top of their game. We always wait until either they go out on loan a couple of times and they end up going on a free. You know, we end up, I think, you know, Obviously, Giovanni, La Celso and Dombello are massive examples of this. We just can't sell them.
24:50We always end up going them on loan and then they end up terminating their contracts. I think you have to be ruthless at the very top level. I think teams like Man City are probably the best example of it because Pep just gets rid of players as soon as they have any kind of inkling of not being involved. He gets rid of them straight away. So I hope we do go down that route a bit more because he's a very expensive player. He's 50 million, Johnson. and my only question would be who's going to buy him at the moment? Who would buy Brendan? I can't imagine him lining up for another team, so it'd be interesting to see, but I do think the Lewis family and our recruitment going forward have to be more ruthless because it's somewhere that we've really struggled over the last few years.
25:28We just need to get into one of those little barely legal or ethically sound agreements like Chelsea seem to have struck up with Manchester United and teams like that where they just all sort of move each other's dross around among one another, don't they? And our problem, and obviously it's great from the moral perspective as being a fan of the conscience, I know that we are, is we don't sell to Saudi. We just don't do it. None of our players ever go to Saudi. We don't cash in on that kind of Saudi money. So, yeah, we're kind of stuck in this. I don't even know why that is the case because I don't think it's for any moral reasons in terms of the ownership.
26:09I don't think they have a problem. that are selling to Saudi. We just don't, we never get those Saudi deals come through for us. You see, we got, we got heavily linked to Mason Greenwood this week. don't even, yeah, that's just, that would, in some ways, I would welcome it because that would be my point to say goodbye Tottenham. I don't need to do this anymore. I mean, this is, this is, I wouldn't, that'd be my end point. Like, let's go on, see you later. And I've always wanted that point. It'd get turned into a culture or wouldn't it? Like, you know, you've been a snowflake and all that type of thing.
26:40But I think if you reflect on that earnestly and without the want to – it's horrific. It's something that couldn't happen. It would warrant in real life protests. Yeah, definitely. It's just sad that what that probably is, I don't think Tottenham are interested. No, apparently not. What I think that probably is, is the agent putting it out there to people just to begin the story of him coming back to England next summer. probably won't be us but that's the it's like the seed dropping the seed and of him coming back to England next summer just seeing how it goes down do you know what I mean you're probably thinking Tottenham fans you know a club like West Ham for example will probably take him with open arms it's just yeah but this is I'm thinking who I mean who genuinely would like who would take him like other than who like Sevilla but no not Sevilla who am I thinking of Villarreal yeah they're bastards FC aren't they yeah and Marseille as well you know he's obviously already there so yeah it doesn't really count but um they're the two the two um avengers um yeah i don't know in england who would take him i think um someone like i don't want to tire all their fans with the same brush but i bet someone like leeds would love it wouldn't they like they they would be like soft southerners you have a problem with that kind of thing but we'll take him yeah i mean it's it's mad isn't it and people are always going to say yeah but he's quality he's just he's that it's like yeah but you know just i even saw the tapes you know if you hear I can't unhear or unsee that stuff that was shared.
28:11I even saw, this is how horrible it is, in the comments to that story, and they're probably like 15-year-old Spurs fans of like a footballer as a picture, but he was going, Tom was going, yeah, but there's been no videos. There's only audio of this kind of thing. You know, it's easy to talk to that kind of, it's just like horrific. Already people are sort of making peace with it. It's just, it's not a world I want to ever be a part of, to be honest. No, and you know, people, also the clapback will always be like, what about rehabilitation don't people deserve a second chance like well rehabilitation comes after a bit of contrition and i've seen nothing nothing to that effect no public contrition no you know attempt to sort of say yes i was in the wrong this is a well i mean this is this is murky ground we don't need to get into this but apparently like you know apparently the club of literally literally circle to all the journalists this week absolutely not interested we're not we're not going there, don't worry, this is a complete fabrication.
29:06So it's not something that we... I doubt any of the big six in inverted commas will go anywhere near it just because of the PR. I'm almost certain that this is plighting the seed for him to return to the Premier League next year almost. Without a doubt, this is what's going to happen. Probably it won't be a big six team, it'll be someone will do it and then that'll be, you know, he'll score a few goals and it'll be forgotten about and that's just the way the world works, unfortunately. Look, this is the thing, look, whatever, even if it's not, even if it's not coming from an ethical place but if it's not coming from a place where they actually care like you say just on a pr basis it's an absolute it would be an absolute nightmare for for anybody for anybody in the top six big brand deals sponsorship deals all of that you know yeah nobody wants to be associated with that you can't have your club especially in any club with like a decent women's team um i mean it shouldn't that shouldn't even matter that's the thing but But, you know, it's what it is.
30:03We're going nowhere near him, so good. Before I do some questions, let's also ask you about your thoughts on Xavi Siemens, mate. Because it seems like a lot of people come into sort of like, you know, big judgments or conclusions as to where he's at or what he's going to be capable of. But to me, it's still just a player that's finding his feet right and still looks all right while he's doing it. I'm not going to lie. I probably would have said I expected a little bit more from him, but maybe that's just me being a greedy pig. Yeah, I feel exactly the same. I think I actually thought that while there was a couple of moments last night where he gave the ball away, I thought he was starting to get on the ball a lot more the whole game.
30:50He's always trying to make things happen, which I think is useful. I just think it's exactly as you say it is. It's a new player going to a new league. It's going to take a long time. And he's a young player as well. It's not like we've signed a 28-year-old person in their prime. He's 22 years old. So we've got time on our side. And I think the biggest problem, the biggest factor in all of it is we're just not a very good attacking side at the moment in general. You can't just rely on it. Because the system is not systeming in terms of attacking play at the moment, what's he supposed to do? Who's he going to pass?
31:19We have poor strikers. We have poor wingers other than Kudus. What's he going to do? I think when you get some of our uninjured players back, our injured players back in the side, that's when we'll start to see the fruits of him. I bet he would love to be playing alongside people like Kulishevsky and Solanke and Matt. If we could get away with him and him and Madison team together, I think that's when we'll see the better of him. Even Kohler Mouane, who's sort of been mixed and starting to come into a good a little bit at the moment. He's the sort of player that they have these moments, don't they, between them where he lays the ball into Kohler Mouane.
31:52Mouane does a one-touch layoff to someone else. That's the kind of player that he will thrive around. I just think the two biggest factors for me are, one, the injuries to the other attacking players, and two, our attacking system is just not quite where it is at the moment because we've obviously favoured defence. Where are you? I guess you'd have to play him out on the left if Madison's back, right? Madison has to play centrally, doesn't he, really? Yeah, I think so. And then if you could sort of get Kuliski in that mix as well, in the home games, imagine having those two on the pitch at the same time.
Read the full transcript
32:20That would just be something that I do hope we get to see at least once. But I do think, and I think we'll get a question on this in a bit, I'm a massive James Madison fan. I think this, how long it's taken Xavi to be sort of anywhere near influential in the games, and how, I wouldn't say disappointing, but how he's not set the golden light yet, makes you realise how good James Madison is, doesn't it? If we had Madison in this run of games, it would be a different story. It's just the way he keeps the ball moving, doesn't he? the way he gets it going forward. And I know I've been sort of critical of him.
32:56I think it's more, the side that I probably, if I reflect on it, the side that I'm sort of critical of Madison about is I want to see more of the big moments from him. I want to see more of the big game winning, match winning moments from him. But as a result of that, it probably means I've undervalued a lot of the actual like hard work that he does, a lot of the grunt work, a lot of the ugly stuff that he does to keep the team sort of ticking nicely. I've probably just been a bit basic about him. you know and I think um a lot of people said when Thomas Frank joined like you know Madison Thomas Frank's all about work rate and is Madison you know does he have that but I think he does to be honest I think you know it's just he's so good at like just taking the ball and beating two men and then passing a little through ball into like Solanke or something like that you know I know people um are really I know it's a big culture we seem to talk about every time that I come on this podcast there's still a massive cultural going on between postagoglu and frank it seems to be never leaving us at the moment there's lots of people that are post um it's just a classic thing going around on twitter at the moment i'll remember the first 10 games of angiball and like compilations of and when you watch those compilations of the first 10 games like madison was absolutely unbelievable like some of the stuff that he was doing i was watching the um the palace game i would beat them two nil away um i think it was the 10th game in the in the 10 game you know in the 10 game era and Maddison was unbelievable in that game it's just yeah I really hope that he comes back to some kind of form anywhere near what he was like it looks like we might get Kudasiewski back first but Frank doesn't really talk about either of them at the moment though does he in terms of returning no well his big thing is on grass isn't it that's what Frank always goes on about about a player being on grass Kudasiewski's just like disappeared off the face of the earth hasn't he like there's no he's not even mentioned in anything he's not on any social media like Madison is always in the social media videos at least I don't know what's happening I'm not saying anything's wrong or anything like that he puts lots of stuff on his own he was punching a punch bag is he just miles away from football or something that's crazy looking back that when we said that was literally the words it was just a knock isn't it and he should be back for the next game and he's going to end up being out for about 10 months by the looks of things yeah it's quite mad isn't it It's quite mad.
35:15Yeah, I don't know. Like, Solanke is another one I worry about as well because… I'm really worried about Solanke, to be honest. The updates on Solanke were always just so like, yeah, you know, he's having a crack. He's having a go at getting fit. Anyway, moving swiftly on, isn't it? You know, it's always that type of vibe, isn't it? It's kind of like they're trying to cover up the fact that they should have done the surgery earlier, do you know what I mean? They're trying to say, oh, he's not that far away. but really he said that at the beginning of the season they said he's going to take an injection to play through the pain which obviously never works and they end up taking the surgery anyway and now it's always like oh yeah well he's training on his own at the moment but he's been training on his own for months now it's just like I'll be yeah I'm really worried about that player to be honest.
35:59Well they do know are they all like just running around you know like old school plimps cells are they just training in plimps cells on concrete well we've got questions about this actually coming up so let's not let's not dive into Tottenham's injury woes too much or at least our physios um yeah let's do some of the questions i've found this first question really tough bill um so i'll be interested to see what you say um ali jameson on instagram says outside of the obvious choices so no janella sharing them etc etc who from the spurs 90s era would small improve this team? That is a good question, isn't it?
36:44I think you have to... I think you have to... The way that we need to improve our team is in attacking, right? So you've got to go for an attacking player. And like, we weren't obviously... In the 90s, we didn't have like the Berbatov-Keens or the list of good strikers in the 2000s. I'd maybe go for someone like... Maybe someone like Les Ferdinand. we just need a striker that's exactly who I was thinking of honestly we just need a striker who can bang in a few goals you know what I mean that's what we need just solid no-nonsense bread-and-butter footballer wasn't it Selez yeah an absolute you know a bit like an old-school a bit like Walter Marder kind of thing just a header up yeah the Selez bullet header you know how he'd like crouch he'd sort of squat wouldn't he and just bang back in the net like he was strong as well Les Ferdinand strong the only other one I can think of and be Nick Barmbi as well, who just a kind of number 10.
37:39We kind of have a litany of those in Kudusovsky, Madison, Xavi. But, you know, he was a bit before his time, Nick Barmbi. Wasn't he a brilliant player? I was in central, like, on my way back from work, I was in central London a few weeks ago. And I was walking down the pavement and suited and booted coming the other way towards me, I saw Les Ferdinand. He was literally there walking towards me. and uh i was just staring you know like you do because i'm like yeah i'm like this is this is a bloke i grew up watching i always i always really quite like les fernand as well and he's just there walking towards me i'm staring at him and then he's obviously quite conscious of the fact he can see that i'm like looking at him and i sort of like put my hand up like a little wave as in to show like yeah i'm friendly and he was still sort of looking at me i just said all right les as i walked past you and he was like all right mate that's the side i didn't i really didn't handle that very well at all did i yeah you never know it's really difficult to judge that kind of situation but i think if you look at our in the 90s like we had such poor strikers i didn't we like i remember when i first that was when i was in jürgen obviously obviously you've klinsman yeah that's what teddy's showing them as well to be fair bill yeah it's like the chris armstrongs and the stephanie evansons when i was a bit after the klinsman and i was even a bit after sharing him when I started watching sharing him's at Man United so it's like I grew up with like Stefan Everson and Chris Armstrong as my strikers you know what I I always quite liked Chris Armstrong I always felt like everyone was a bit harsh on him but um I was really young though do you know what I mean and you just can't have players that you like don't you when you're a kid he was like my first example of like obviously in the age before social media I just kind of sensed even I must have been so young at the time I just he was my first example of like a player that kind of divides Spurs fans.
39:28You could just tell him in the stadium that half the people hated him and stuff. I even remember that as a kid. Obviously, we've got loads of them now, and it's magnified on social media. People like Brendan Johnson, who we just spoke about, the cultural players. But even in the stands at Tottenham, you can always kind of tell that half the people don't even rate him. Sergai Rebroff was like the original Lamella. He was Lamella before Lamella. He was such a Marmite player. I remember being absolutely buzzed with the sign as well. Yeah, exactly. I was so desperate for him to work. Because I just remember it was like, it was Rebroff and Shevchenko.
40:03Yeah, basically the next best name to Shevchenko was how I sold it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then there was always, there was all this like talk, team talk, would always be going on about the fact that we were going to try and get Shevchenko as well. Like, do us a favour, not a chance. When you look back, when you reflect on that, you think, not a chance where Spurs going to sign Andrei Shevchenko who at that time was widely accepted as being the best player in world football I remember that one I also remember when we had Glenn Hodler's manager being linked to Eto 'o as well Yes and he mentioned it didn't he Eto 'o he said because he I think he nutmegged I think he was playing for Mallorca at the time I think that's who he was playing for when we were linked to him and he nutmegged Sol Campbell in the Champions League and he actually said after the game He said, that one was for Tottenham.
40:54And so we were all like, yes, yes, we're going to get Samuel Eto 'o. And then obviously he went to Barcelona and became one of the greatest struggles of all time. Yeah, I just remember that. I remember being on a holiday and having, you know, when you get like the day old paper, I remember looking at the back and had something about Glenn Hoddle talking about Samuel Eto 'o and just dreaming of that. But yeah, obviously it never materializes in the end. I'm just trying to find out if that was for Tottenham quite that I didn't. I didn't just imagine that. I don't know. Maybe I did. But what a player he was, man.
41:29Like, he's sort of, he's one of those players that, you know, because the last, basically the last decade at least of football has been so dominated by Messi and Ronaldo. I feel like there's so many players that, like, people just sort of forget about. And you also sort of forget, like, when I was a kid, I guess, because there was nobody who was as outstanding as those two, there was just a plethora of like really, really good players. You know, when I think of, when you just sort of scroll through, you think about like Nedved, Klaiver, Batistuta, you know, these sort of names that were just like such good players.
42:08And everything has just been Messi and Ronaldo in the period since. But yeah, I feel like players like, you know, Samieto, people don't really sort of acknowledge as being like quite as good as they were because everything got warped, didn't it? We've never mentioned Klinsman earlier. We haven't had it since then, have we? We haven't signed. It's been, what, this new 30 years. We haven't signed that level of player since Klinsman. No. The closest thing is Bale on loan. Yeah, exactly. He'd already established himself at Tottenham, so it doesn't really count. But we haven't signed a player of that level, which is mad, really, when you think we're the 8th richest football club, we're a mainstay of the Champions League.
42:45We've never had that Klinsman level signing, like Chef Jen Corretto would have been back in those days. And like, you know, I remember the fabled Aguero transfer that never actually happened. And then obviously the Hazard one. We've never made that class sign. And I've always been, I've always been chasing. Hey, it's Bill from the Bill Simmons podcast. FIFA World Cup 26 fans, listen up. MK Sport says, do you think it's genuinely possible for Kane to make a return to Spurs next season?
45:12my heart says yes my head says no way i i think i mean did you see the goal that he scored yesterday for example like he's just he's playing at an absolutely insane level at the moment i i i think there's an i think there's a good 75 chance now that he renews at bear munich um maybe there's a 25 chance that the lewis family just think right fuck it let's just really really assign ourselves to this and give him 500 grand a week and whatever he wants, but I really think he's going to stay at Bayern Munich, mate. I just really think that. There was a time maybe a couple of months ago at the beginning of this season when I thought maybe it could happen, but he just seems to be, this season in particular, he seems to be playing his best.
45:53I think he's got 25 golden assists already this season. I tweeted earlier and he's literally scoring every single game for Bayern Munich. I think they've got a really good chance of winning the Champions League with him so I don't think I think he'll renew that almost certainly what do you reckon I just don't I don't see why look you're at one of the whatever people want to say about like you know farmers league and stuff you're still at one of the biggest clubs in the history of the game at Bayern Munich and you are gonna go down as one of their greatest modern day players if you stay on the current trajectory that you're on with them you know if you win a champions league with them if you keep on breaking goal-scoring records with them, you can truly be immortalized.
46:38And yeah, football is so in the moment, like the banter accounts, the aggregators, all that type of stuff. You and I, we take the piss out of different leagues and farmers' leagues and all that type of stuff. But once the dust has settled on somebody's career, if you reflect back on being a Champions League winner, being a record holder with a club like Bayern Munich, if he has another five, six years there, if he gets just under a decade playing for a club like that, leading the line for them, it's legendary. And that's playing for a club like them, you are closer to winning. And he will always, you know what Kane's like, he's a humble guy and he'll always go on about like, oh, it's not about me.
47:19It's not about the individual on his bollocks. We all know that's bollocks for him. And we all know he's got his sights set on winning a Ballon d 'Or one day, doing the improbable, actually making all those memes that we made of him in the early days of Tottenham a reality. If he has a season like he's got this year and if he wins the Champions League, it's a travesty if he doesn't win the Ballon d 'Or because he is quite simply the best player in the world right now. I really don't think that's in question. He's obscene. We could be looking at him winning the Champions League for Bayern Munich and winning the World Cup with England.
47:54You don't know that. that is what could happen for him. And I just think it would be madness to him. I don't think he'll come back to Spurs because we're not in a place that's going to, he's got a few years left. He wants to win as much as he can. Spurs are not in that place right now. You know, and I don't think, I think I would like to think he doesn't go Arsenal. You know, I'd like to think he wouldn't do that. Yeah. That would be a real killer. At the same time, you, you could, you could sort of imagine at the end of the season. Please don't. I know. fucking this, you know, he's obviously a busted flush, Giocares.
48:28Oh, mate. I'm sure he would never. It's honestly, it's something I've had nightmares about, you know, like. I'm sure that would never happen, surely, but. I mean, I mean, any club would, like, he's the best stroke in the world. You can see the creative already, mate. You can see it already. The pictures of him in the kit at the trophy parade when he was, all that stuff. Do you know what I mean? You can see it. That would be the, when we talk about the Mason Greenwood joining Tottenham as being, an exit point for Tottenham. That would be another exit point as well for football in general. See, Kane goes Arsenal, Spurs get Mason Greenwood in, that's it, it's done.
49:03Yeah, that'll be it. I'm glad that'll be a good point. I'm going to follow cricket. No, darts as well, actually. Darts and cricket, done. Yeah, that'll be it. But yeah, I just, I also don't think, a lot of people talk about the record, the Alan Shearer record. I don't think he's that bothered about it, to be honest. I think he just wants to win Champions League's and like Ballon d 'Or. Like he's, at this moment in time, I'm sure he's favourite to win the Ballon d 'Or. so I mean it would be nice to have the Alan Shear record but then I'm sure he's probably looking at Erling Haaland and thinking well if Haaland stays in the Premier League for another decade he's going to smash that record so yeah exactly it's not a bit I think he'd much rather have two Champions League of Bayern which you know Bayern they've just beaten the record haven't they they've won the first 14 games of the season which yeah it's mad it's mad scored like 55 goals and conceded about 10 or something this is about this is about Musialo as well he's just got an injury so So I think they will be in at least semi-final Champions League.
49:58Really good chance to win it. I mean, Elise is looking world, world class as well. They've got Diaz, they've got Musiala. Companies, actually, he is a decent manager, let's be real. Can you build, I'm just going to set this scene for you. Can you imagine Champions League final, Arsenal against Bayern Munich? And it's Harry Kane leading the line for Bayern. Harry Kane in a record-breaking season, Ballon d 'Or within his sights. Yeah, I mean, the way the world's got it. Yeah, it surely is. I hope it doesn't get that far because it would not. Yeah, of course. But, you know, they're going to be there or thereabouts, unfortunately, aren't they?
50:37It's going to be out of them, probably those two and PSG to win it. So, yeah. But let's hope they get knocked out before them somehow. Remove the nightmare scenario of it being Arsenal. Is it Timpott? Because, you know, I've sort of said it, I'd be happy. But is it a bit Timpott? for us to claim it as a bit of a win. I mean, I'd be overjoyed. I know people always say, I don't care about any player when they leave the club. I love Harry Kane. I'm going to love Harry Kane. And if I saw him lift the Champions League trophy, I'd be absolutely buzzing for the lad. Do you know what I mean? I would be as well, mate.
51:08I really, really would. And I think the more I've reflected on it in the last couple of years, you've realised that we massively failed him. He didn't fail us. We failed him. I think that becomes more apparent since we moved into the new stadium and everything's gone a bit to shit and we've steadily declined. We actually had this player playing for us and we didn't utilise it at all. We had literally the best of our product of all time. We didn't even win a Carling Cup, let alone a Champions League or league. It's just, it's absolutely insane. I think, I know we've done loads of big picture stuff on Levy recently, obviously he's gone, but that for me will be the biggest failing of Levy's levacy is that Harry Kane left our club without winning the trophy.
51:50it's like you know it's all the memes when you see somebody like laughing and then it turns into like crying that's just me watching all these sort of harry kane highlight reels coming out of bayern munich that i this is what it should have been for us like we should have built this level of team around him like yeah we nearly did as well but we just oh it's just really like for example like the players at that bayern munich have got they're not like massively out of reach like we could have had a world where we had alice harry kane and luis diaz up front and look how look what it's doing like it's pulverising world football like did you see his goal when he like almost recreated the Bundesliga logo when the ball comes over the top he puts his foot out touches it and then just heads it into the goal it's unbelievable have you seen the one it's one from yesterday his one from yesterday was insane as well but he gets it on the turn and actually smashes it oh it's just the power he generates I mean we're going to be talking about Harry Kane for 15-20 minutes but it's just it's ludicrous isn't it it's ludicrous it's a bit like the one that he scored against Arsenal, you know, in the COVID game where he just...
52:50Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah. He absolutely levers it off the crossbar and in from about two yards out. You know, I know we're sort of resentful of like company and stuff for saying this type of thing, but he actually is improving as well while he's at Bayern. He's really sort of taken that step up and just... I don't know, man. He's ridiculous. He's a ridiculous, ridiculous player. He is. At the same time, it is really frustrating to hear them come out every week and be like, oh, now he's defending and set pieces in fit. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that stuff's nonsense. I don't know. Yeah, he's been doing that for years, mate.
53:20He's learning to play as a number 10. No, no, he's not at all. Shut up. Company came out and said, didn't he, that he's now a more of an all-round player. So he's not. He is a better player, but without a doubt. But he's not learned anything. He's the same Harry Kane that he's always been. I'm pretty sure he's skinned you a few times, Danny, as Vincent, as well, mate. So do you know what I mean? We've had one from Porus Bastani on Spotify, actually, who said, do you think at present Colin Moani and Dane Scarlett are our two actual out and outs for number nine and should be rotated instead of Richarlison and Tell until Dom is back in the frame?
54:00And I sort of, I wanted to touch on this, mate. Dane Scarlett didn't get a look in last night at all. Do you think it's just time to move the lad on for the sake of his own career? I think so, mate. I think so, because if he's not going to play against, who did we have? Doncaster before this. It might have came on at the end, actually. But, you know, if he's not going to get meaningful minutes, he's not going to get a look in, is he? I think he shouldn't be here. He should be on loan without a doubt. And I think it's a shame because when he came through, when he was like 16 and he was like breaking scoring records, we have, and it's kind of the same with quite a few of our academy prospects.
54:37We have like this, and I think because we've been treated, and I don't want to keep talking about Harry Kane the whole podcast, but because we got treated to Harry Kane and knowing what is possible for an academy project if they're literally one of the best of all time. Someone like Dane Scarlett, we had visions of him doing something similar, at least being a regular first-team player, but I think he's way off the level. I don't agree with that question. I don't think it should be him and someone else because he's never shown it at a Premier League level. You can say what you want about Richarlison, but he's got a pretty good to okay record of scoring in the Premier League.
55:09Dane Scarlett has never had that and is never likely to have that, unfortunately. I think in January he should be sold permanently. And there's a sort of the horrible business-like sense of the academy that that's what it's there for, right? It's like to churn out a two, three, four, five million pound player every few years that pays for it for the rest of it. That's essentially what it is, like a product line of five to six million pound players, which unfortunately it is, rather than the dream factory of having an endless supply of Harry Canes. I think unfortunately he will be one of the people people that we probably sell for like 5 million um which probably pays for the academy for a good few years and then you know rather than having harry kane on the end of it it's a shame isn't it because i always feel like i've seen sort of real glimmers flashes of promises smashed it for england at like every level didn't he like he was scoring like six goals in england and 16 17 games and stuff but he just you know he's had enough sort of lower championship league one loans and stuff and never really made an impression any of those and again i know like you say that the the comparison is always going to be well Kane didn't either but I think that is somewhat overstated as well I think Kane actually probably did a bit better on his loan spells than people sort of make out it doesn't really work for the story as well and I think it's an interesting conversation because we're in the middle of it now so we always have these like the the flags of our academy that we're really hoping make it to the next big thing obviously Dane Scarlett was one the one after that is Mikey Moore and then the one after that is now Luca Williams Barnett and again Mikey Moore has kind of gone a bit backwards hasn't he because um the Rangers loan hasn't particularly worked out very well and I you know he seems to get a lot of you know um already a lot of fans have turned on him Tottenham fans I mean lots of Rangers fans already have of course but um we just don't seem to be able to have it in us to to do to set a pathway that's correct do we at the moment like you know since Kane like we you know those three players I've got have massive massive uh reputations and like all of them smashed it all the represented levels of England, but we don't seem to know what to do with them.
57:11I don't know what's going to happen to Mikey Moore next. I hope whatever happens to Luca Williams-Bartnett, you can pray that he makes it as good as everyone says he's going to be, but we don't really quite seem to know how to deal with it at the moment. FPL Sonny says, in honour of our trip to St. James' Park, what's your favourite thing to get from Greg's? um so my easy well i've got two answers to that depending on what time of year that you go because i think the festive bake is absolutely an unbelievable achievement in uh british baking history take take me through what's in this festive bake you speak of to be honest i don't actually have a clue what's actually inside it i'm not gonna lie i think that's part of the mystery you don't know you're just getting random random christmas yeah it's getting a sort of number of christmasy type objects i think it's like turkey um and it's basically like a steak bake just with turkey i think is essentially what it is but there's a bit of christmas magic in there somewhere which gives it a little bit it's got like the spices nutmeg and that type of stuff yeah i'm always a sausage bean and cheese guy though that's my absolute favorite um sausage bean and cheese melt from greg's one of my favorite things i always get that in a sausage roll and um happy days i'm not really not really a big fan of the steak bakes mate what about you I feel a bit left out, mate.
58:29I don't, I'm one of these, I'm not doing it to be trendy. I don't eat gluten. So I, yeah, I often feel a bit left out, but you know what, when it comes to like this sort of stuff, I've never, I've never, honestly, I've never been the biggest pastry fan. And I know people, people don't believe that. People don't believe it. But what I do like from that sort of thing, I'm a bit of a gammon, really. I would just like a bit of a Yadar big, like cheese and pickle baguette or something like that. Cheese and pickle is one of my all time favorites. Do you know what I mean? It's just wallop. It's proper da sandwich, that, for me.
59:01And that's the sort of thing I'd go for. I didn't realize it was a local thing. So I live in Northwest London, and there's loads of them. I thought it was like a common thing. But have you ever had a Wenzel's, mate? Yeah. My mate always calls it the Tory Greggs, but I don't know. Which I think maybe it's like a slightly upmarket version of Greggs. They do like pretzel sausage rolls, don't they, type things? Yeah. Wenzel's is absolutely banging. and they do an amazing chicken and bacon sandwich. But you can't, speaking of cheese and pickle, you can't go into many places and get a cheese and pickle sandwich these days, can you?
59:33You essentially have to go to one of those really posh farm shops to get it. They don't sell it in like a market. Cheese and pickle is a dying art. These days, mate, if you say you want a cheese and pickle sandwich, you know what I mean? I reckon that is probably my goat sandwich. You see, with cheese and, I'm really simple, simple flavored. Either like ham and cheese or cheese and pickle. if reform starts saying they're going to get cheese and pickle back on the menu yeah then they got my vote do you know i mean a random random um side side tangent on this i'm sure you probably haven't because you've obviously you've got a new baby we tried the fucking new mcdonald's menu man is this the stuff i haven't but i've seen the advert they've stolen bits from the menu across the world it's unreal absolutely unbelievable maple is from canada it's absolutely brilliant and they got like all this um all this woke stuff like uh sour chips and sour sour cream fries and stuff but yeah it's really good really good stuff they need to uh do you know what they need to do mate if they're importing from around the world they need to get beers in mcdonald's like they've got let's go be with a spania as well in spain do they do they have that yeah but nice nice crispy little like pilsners and stuff don't they in uh yeah i just i don't think we i don't think it would go down well in england there would it would just be people would be on like 15 just go down mcdonald's for a drink wouldn't you yeah you get like a big mac and 15 pints or something large large chips and 10 pints please um mu and oink um also asked about dane scarlet just to give you a shout out but we've spoken about dane already it's a day and scarlet isn't it it's really sad i would love i'd love for him to have made it it's just i don't think it's gonna happen um callum bradker says to stop all football teams going for draws any scoreline that's nil nil after 90 minutes go straight to penalties even league games discuss i mean as i'm just going to position myself in front of this green tiled wall callum um before i start talking about this idea of yours no not for me yeah my um my friend dan who um does the dr tottenham podcast with obviously two americans um he coins stuff like that um utter yank nonsense to me is utter yank nonsense um obviously jokingly because we do have two americans on the podcast so it's okay i mean i i dare say this this this is one of those things right this is one of the things where i i i actually get it like you you will often see sort of american fans um it's like figo or someone who came out and said football games need to be much shorter because no one's got an attempt was it like i can't remember who came out someone like someone said someone came out and said they need to make like 15 minute half snuggles no one's got an attention span but that's where everything's headed though isn't it like everything's going to be like um you know like 50 and i saw um i saw you and phil talking i was talking about my girlfriend last night as well you know that netflix thing where they're making they're dumbing down scripts in case people watch you are watching whilst watching on their phone um the second screen thing of netflix shows it's just like that's the way everything's going like football is going to be like 10 minutes followed by 10 minutes and then a penalty shoot at the end mate it's mad though isn't it it's mad like i feel like um it was a perfectly enjoyable dumb sort of popcorn film but you know that one with um sydney sweeney and what's his name the geezer that's in everything right now glenn powell anyone yeah i was watching that and i was thinking the way this script has been written i'm like like i'm not like i say i like crap films i like popcorn films i watch all types of movies but when i was watching this i was like is this film actually written for idiots but then it made sense to me i was like well yeah because they're writing it because people can look at their phones and then look back now netflix are literally telling their script writers to do that aren't they to be like man that's depressing someone walk into a room be like oh i'm in this room because i'm doing this like you have to like someone can look up at any point when watching it and know exactly what's going on it's really depressing all you can hope is it leads to like a rejuvenated indie scene um that we're going to see better but more sort of indie films and football might be a bit like that as well like you might get like um people are liking non-league aren't they a lot more nowadays so you might get people like having like um illegal games where they're still allowed extra time and stuff like that i mean it's quite interesting because you do see people saying like you know it's it's mad that you can go to like a a premier league game.
1:03:56Like, I don't know if you, sorry, it caused quite a stir this week. So like the sort of the footy scrum account posted a hot dog from Fulham. Did you see it? And it was like literally half of it was burnt and the other half was raw pretty much. And it just looked ridiculous. And it was like seven 99 in a stale bit of like baguette or whatever. And people are saying like, the mad thing is you go to like non-league football and they've generally got like craft beers, artisan food, all this type of stuff, like real community vibe about it, that the experience is in many ways so much better than going to Premier League football.
1:04:33The unfortunate thing is the football just really is terrible a lot of the time, you know? Yeah, I've just, I've literally just found as well, FIFA are like, there's rumours that they're trialling 60-minute matches and stuff like that. It's going to be absolutely ridiculous, isn't it? Absolutely. Get that out of my face. Get out of my face with that nonsense. It's that bold infant. Sorry, I don't need to be pejorative about it. It's that, I apologize to my, you know, bald listeners, but that Infantino, he is. Remember when Seb Blatter went and everyone was celebrating, and then this thing, this thing crawled out of Satan's anus and took charge of FIFA.
1:05:15It's. Yeah, mate. That's one organization which has never been, could do with being a little bit more woke-ified. Definitely. Danny, I'm with you. Danny Rojas says, snap of the finger and they are fully fit again. Would you rather have Solanke, Madison or Kulisevsky? Good question. I did. And this is one I spoke about earlier when I said, but I know we're going to talk about it later because I did think about this in mind. My answer would, without doubt, be James Madison. I know some people will say Kulisevsky. I don't think, I think it's out of them two, right? I think Solanke, although we do need a striker, I just really miss those two playing for Tottenham, both of them, Kulisevsky and Maddison.
1:05:58I remember thinking about this time last year when we played Man City and we beat them 4-0. They were both insane. I think Frank will love both of them. I think Kulisevsky, I think they've got a good chance of answering Kulisevsky as well. But I really, really miss James Maddison. I just miss having someone who can thread a ball through, cross a ball and score at the same time, like all in the same game. It's just badly lacking creativity, aren't they? yeah I do I love Kulisovsky I think he's one of my favorite Tottenham players but I find it hard to look past James Madison right now for all of the reasons that you stay and just for what it is that this team needs right now I'm quite desperately because I love Kulisovsky is unbelievable he will be a massive player but he's really good at stuff like we're already kind of doing a little bit like Kudis is kind he's really good at like dribbling taking a man on being strong and obviously he can score an assist which is great but I feel like we're missing the spark at the moment I mean that's what I'm missing and Madison's slightly better than that I what I would love to see somehow is if we could have a like just have them all playing together like Madison, Kulisewski, Kudus and I think it's really a testament to Thomas Frank and something which gets forgotten about a lot um and then in the way that it's already becoming really popularized about Thomas Frank but again you know people have mentioned Ange and people have mentioned Thomas Frank out crazy stuff like that already um but just having not having those three players is mad for any manager, isn't it?
1:07:17Like they would make, all three of them would make such a big difference to this team. And like, he hasn't had any of them for any Premier League games yet. And we're still, you know, third of the team. Isn't it? Like it is quite mental when it's laid out for you like that. Solanke, Madison and Kulusevsky. They are three players that improve almost any team in the Premier League. If you include Son as well, who we haven't replaced, let's not forget. It's 82 goal and assists last season between the four of them. Just gone from the team like that. So, you know, I think we're doing, absolutely fine without, you know, doing a fine to be in the position that we're in without them.
1:07:51You know, that's 82 goals taken from the front line. 82 goals and assists, sorry. Any manager would struggle with that. And, you know, the fact that we're still doing fine in the league, the fact that we're still, you know, creating chances against teams like Newcastle, I think we're going to be fine long term. zelda at zelda thfc says do you think we could fix the atmosphere in the stadium by moving richarlison into a permanent mascots role and sending him into the stands with a drum and then uh she says in brackets yes i have to um preface this question by saying she's literally sat opposite me right now and i'm using her laptop to answer it so i would definitely under Duras say yes she's a big fan of Richarlison as we all are but I think what we're maybe slightly hinting at there is that maybe his values lie off the pitch rather than on it currently because what did you think of him last night mate I think he was getting a lot of criticism last night but do you think this is like the final straw for Richarlison you know like the thing about him is when he's good he's absolutely quality like he's absolutely insane he was like he was like a cane light do you know i mean he was doing good work outside the box he was in not like i was gonna say nonsense a nuisance in the box he's doing the lot but he just he can't maintain that consistency but he does seem like a good bloke that's the thing so i think this sort of this mascot this mascot segue for him actually I think Zelda's on something there.
1:09:24Yeah, and I feel like when we talk about people like Mason Greenwood earlier, for example, Rich Arlington is one of the best characters in football. The more that you learn about him and the more that you see what he's about. And I think he's got this reputation between other fans of being like this shithouse that wins fouls and dives around. But actually, his social conscience is brilliant. He does so much stuff in Brazil. he was the only footballer the only Brazilian like known footballer to be against that that right wing Brazilian guy Bolsonaro sort of his name is and you know I think I love the guy I just wish nothing but happiness for him I think what might be a good end for him is just to go back to Everton like that's clearly his home like to go back there it's just best for all parties right if he can somehow make that happen If anyone's not seen the sort of stuff that Zelda works on like the sort of the custom Spurs closing stuff that she makes give her a follow on twitter because it's really awesome is she was she working on the moment bill um well her um i heard about this stuff the dress that she made has got um not stolen this it's got misplaced or at worst stolen at best misplaced so we're going to try and take two on the cards i think so i'm very generous person has given the bedsheets again so could be a reincarnation of that of that and on the cards what happened what happened with the the theft essentially we don't particularly know but it was the bag it was in has gone even from Glasgow airport or Glasgow bus somewhere in the Glasgow region could be even in the Heathrow region if you see anyone wearing a tailored Tottenham dress they are likely a criminal so upheld them I reckon the way to solve this bill is for you to go marching around Glasgow now and just offering people out That might be how I spend the next two days.
1:11:17I think it will go down really well for you down there, mate. Up there even. Ollie, at Oliver Lister, he says, Reguillon, currently unattached, was like a whippet to get a Europa winner's medal. What have you taken undeserved credit for? I do have an answer to this, actually. It's that every year I lie to my children that I teach and I tell them that Thorpe Park is owned by my uncle. and every time they go there they tell me that and we do a school trip there um and the funny thing is which they obviously is a testament to my teaching and the children is that it's spelt differently to how i spell it as well which i've never clocked on to so uh it's got an e on the end which i don't have but i i claim that thought park is a family thing that's pretty sick actually where's what's where's where's that come from we'll see what's the not the etymology but what's do you know i mean what's the root of that like um i think it's danish i think it's some kind of like vikingy thing or norway scandinavian thought i think it means town and no i meant more like why do you say it's your oh of course i get it yeah yeah all right i get it i uh that's that's me being very dumb yeah so i i say that every year wrapped up in like is this this is a bit government namey so i wasn't sure if uh yeah i know i didn't i i'll say on a podcast i will never tweet it out loud but i'll say on a podcast for sure but um i i don't know i was thinking that's the only thing i could think about for this question obviously there's a classic um the classic group work at university but um i couldn't really think of anything else what about you uh the fact that you know when people congratulate us on how gorgeous our child is that i had any part to play in that yeah that's a very minimal one so i'll take that one i'll do the simp dad thing i'm doing a lot of that at the moment i've already changed my whatsapp picture to one of me holding a do you know yeah peak simp dad um you've seen this thing and i've i've noticed it um of your lovely child as well it's like this evolution apparently it's like an evolutionary device um you know like the firstborn baby of a family um always comes out looking exactly like the dad yeah and obviously and apparently that's because like you know a million thousands of years ago like when a um a caveman would have a baby with someone and then they just fuck off and if they the baby looked like the dad he would be more inclined to stay around more and then look protect it um so it's like i love how the the women like and do all obviously all the incredible work and do everything and then it just comes out always looking like the dad straight away proper lads it's like an evolutionary tool to keep men around families it's nice isn't it we're the caveman can see that it looks slightly like me i might stick around with this baby um vic neat at vicksper says what on earth is going on with our medical team i am at a absolute loss of this mate i the archie gray one has really frazzled me like what is going on like how are you what's going on in our training sessions like what is happening there because our players aren't getting injured in matches i don't know if you've noticed this um they're not getting injured in games i can't remember i think that james madison is the only person of our lengthy injury list that gets injured in games everyone else getting injured in training like what's going on i don't get but now it's like um it's like what's that is it like Theseus' ship thing where you change all the floorboards or whatever, and is it still the same ship?
1:14:32Triggers Broom. Triggers Broom is another one. This is a new medical team. It's a new manager. It's essentially a new playing squad, and it's still happening. What is going on? I can't explain it. I don't know, but it's... It is massively bad luck, do you reckon? It might be. It might be a case that all teams look at their medical teams and say, why do we always get injured? But it does seem to be season after season that we have a lot of injuries. I mean, maybe the truth is more the fact that we rely on a few players too much because we don't have enough quality in the squad. And that's, again, another sort of women of the Levy era.
1:15:08And I try not to talk about the Ange cultural thing because I find it really boring at the moment. It's just not going away. But it's good. I know it's a lot of the people on the Ange side. It's good fuel for them at the moment. It's like, oh, I thought Ange was a problem. but you know it's it's really weird isn't i don't know what's going on i think just on this as well one thing that really triggered me last night i've got to say from last night as much as i i do think newcastle are good and they played well joe linton had two red cards last night that fucking tackle on kudos what is that it's a leg-breaking it's a leg-breaking challenge amazing still of it isn't it like the picture of it it's like literally it's like a wrestling move Well, I mean, they're obviously all completely memeing it and stuff now as well, other Newcastle fans, which is kind of funny.
1:15:56Yeah, all triggered by Joe Linton again, are you? It's like, no, it makes me kind of, in a horrific way, I understand how Arsenal fans really hate Newcastle fans for this specific reason. And they're just thugs, aren't they? Joe Linton is just a thug. He's not a footballer. No, he does seem to be rare players that just tries to... Carl Henry was like that. I remember Carl Henry at Wolves. there were times when he would just be going out just to literally injure players and you could see that he was doing that and i saw that i saw a spurs fan tweet the picture of um i saw a spurs fan tweet the picture of of the joe linton tackle and then a newcastle fan replying like oh 11 30 the next day and we're still in rent free in your heads oh just fuck off honestly like it's it's obviously horrific challenge stop like playing up like you're some kind of like in people's heads about it you just literally you're just a thuggish team that are brutal all victrola oh this is last one bill victrola dj um on blue sky says billy when are you going to join blue sky i know i've never couldn't can you can you can you sell the case of blue sky because i generally i hate the like um i hate like the big initial period of social media when you don't have you know when you're just building up from the beginning which is why to go full circle on this podcast, which is why with the TikTok, I tried to start it from, I haven't been like on my Twitter, I've been like, oh, go and follow me on TikTok.
1:17:17I've tried to go from the ground up. And that's actually been, it has actually been all right, actually. So maybe I will do it with Blue Sky too. But what is, what's your experience with Blue Sky? Because a lot of the podcasts I listen to, like the film ones, they, they are, you know, they get their questions from Blue Sky and stuff. And like, obviously Twitter has become an assess pit more and more every single day. I I was reading a story about two things. One, that Elon is biased, grok for horrific, unsanitary reasons. And two, that he's trying to influence the New York election with Twitter.
1:17:51It is a horrific platform. So what's your experience with Blue Sky? I mean, there's obviously that stuff. That's big, to be fair. I don't even need more time than that. Yeah, you take that sort of stuff aside. I mean, it's the same sort of way of talking. But it's almost like we were sort of saying of football. it's a bit like non-league versus premier league i found i found that i think conversation tends to be a bit more authentic um i feel like do you know honestly do you know it reminds me of bill is the early days of twitter it reminds me of what it used to be like when how we first got talking yeah exactly when you can go on it and have more of a just a sort of chat about football and disagree with people and it you know there isn't as much of the culture on there there isn't as much of like the banter culture your sort of threads aren't getting sort of dived into by an Arsenal fan or somebody who has this preloaded idea about who you are or whatever I just I think like the level of conversations a bit more considered I think that people are often a bit more friendly on there um but you know nowhere's perfect that's the thing nowhere's perfect there's plenty of opinions and stuff that I see on Blue Sky that are you know kind of the in a footballing sense that are the sort of more accepted thought that i'm like no i don't agree with that at all and i don't feel as comfortable arguing about it because everyone seems to be getting on and i don't want to be like a sort of stick in the mud about it but and i i did see this thing um i saw a news story last week in america this um house or this warehouse sorry got raided and there was a bot farm of 480 million bots of twitter bots um and when you step and think that's probably who you're argument on twitter like what is even like it's just so dystopian isn't it like i'm not even arguing with real humans that explains chris cowlin's popularity though doesn't it yeah i'm not even arguing i shouldn't say that but you know i'm not even arguing with real humans i'm arguing with like some bot farm in america so i'm not even just trying to monetize everything it's just yeah it's a hellscape it is a hellscape but at the same time it's how i know quite a few of my friends it's how i know you it's how i know my girlfriends it's a it's an ego stroke in it at the the end of the day yeah so yeah i have um i've got to say i'm i'm really into tiktok i'm like a an old man on tiktok these days but um i really really like tiktok i was like i just you know i'm like everyone else my um my brain has turned to mush and i don't have any sort of attention for anything so you're gonna do you do any dances or anything for us on that i'm not gonna go that far but i do you know what's really good for us remember with daniel levy somebody found daniel levy's kids or granddaughters tiktok and he was he was literally doing a dance on there wasn't he yeah just why why that's what's brilliant for those like all of our niche um interests like films and everything like once you get that in the algorithm it's just brilliant where do we follow you again give everyone a reminder where to follow you on tiktok bill uh billy t1882 i think it is on there and uh yeah billy t1882 with no underscores and um yeah mostly at the moment chatting about this mental have you seen this this rise in uh invert the wing accounts that is going on at the moment no no take me through it so um i don't know if you've seen like it's classic half-term behavior classic jobless half-term behavior there is essentially a 50 plus accounts of invert the wings that are like pretending to be like his family like there's invert the uncle invert the mom it's got an absolutely out of hand like then there's just a swathe of these accounts that are all and they've all got like thomas frank in a slightly different picture and a slightly different bio there's like in invert the wings delivery honestly it's in the unhinged world that we live in um there's like invert the you know invert the Wings best friend, Invert the Wings nephew.
1:21:31And it's like this swathe of Twitter accounts have been set up with slightly different Thomas Frank pictures. And it's just like, this is a proof that, you know, Tottenham Twitter is just an absolutely unhinged place to be. Bill, I appreciate you, mate. Much love. Much love to you and the new family.

Jack is joined by Billie T in the aftermath of Tottenham’s draw at St James’ Park. There’s a sense of perspective about the result. Spurs were stoic in the face of Newcastle’s quality, but the discussion soon turns to the work still needed in recruitment. The pair chat about Antonín Kinský’s shaky display and whether the calls to replace Vicario were a bit premature, before digging into Xavi Simons’ recent struggles with form.
It’s also a listener Q&A, featuring questions like: which 90s Spurs player would improve this team, what should happen with Dane Scarlett, what’s Billie’s go-to Gregg’s order and could a Harry Kane return ever be on the cards?
Theme is Ghost Cat by Gillen.
