In short

Reaction to Tottenham’s 1-2 loss to Chelsea in a pre-season friendly (played in Australia). Host is furious about Kevin Danso’s sending off, calling it pointless for a non-violent pre-season challenge, and argues the referee should have used a yellow instead. Despite the loss, the host claims beating Chelsea “rattles them,” and highlights the hypocrisy of “meaningless” pre-season results being celebrated.

Guest backgrounds

No guests are mentioned; it’s a solo host episode.

Key claims

Sending off served no purpose; pre-season should prioritize “minutes in the legs,” not strict punishment. Tottenham still benefits from the rivalry narrative. Spurs need a new striker/goal scorer; Dominic Solanke lacks “killer instinct” and fitness reliability.

Notable examples

Richarlison scoring late; Solanke’s alertness in the box; Cody Gakpo linked by Paul O’Keefe; Matisse Tel’s movement and potential; Sandro Tonali’s crisp play; Andy Robertson’s early promise; Guglielmo Vicario’s improved shot-stopping; Archie Gray and Rio Kourou Martin/“Ty Hall” youth mentions.

0:34Thanks for the support, and now on with the show. I recently got back from a holiday in Bilek in Turkey. It was brilliant, but I did spend it looking longingly at the golf courses in the area. 2:34Excuse me, boss.

2:41it's a uh it's a game that um

2:48it shouldn't be played as a pre-season fixture sorry maybe that's a bit of an old-fashioned

2:53Jack:view i know there's a lot of fans around the other side of the world that want to see tottenham playing big games like that but the thing i would say the thing i would say to that is the very thing that has drawn you to this game, to the game that we all love. That today is the very antithesis of it. Trying to package, and look, it's kind of what the Premier League is in general, right? But there's still something there left of the needle, but trying to package and, you know, export big fiery games, like Tottenham against Arsenal, we saw in pre-season last year or the year before, Tottenham against Chelsea this year.

3:35You know, it's just, it's not quite right. With that said, with that said,

3:46never, I've never, I've never, do you know what? It's one of those things, right? We lose today. It's just a pre-season game, isn't it?

3:54Jack:Just a pre-season, who cares? Just a pre-season game. Let Chelsea have their fun, you know? They cheated. We've already heard that they cheated. We heard the way that they, you know, they signed Eden Hazard. I think there's a new, I don't want to say anything libelous, but I've seen some stuff lately coming up about the way in which they signed Eden Hazard, you know, obviously to the detriment of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club as well when they did that. Let them have their fun. You know, they won, whatever. But in this reality, in this beautiful, glorious reality, pombo pombo crops up 91st minute and you saw you saw you saw Roberto De Zerbi he was happy he was happy you know it's one of those things isn't it it's one of those beautiful beautiful hypocrisies in football the pre-season fixture meaning nothing and the pre-season fixture being a source of mirth.

4:52And today we get to enjoy it. We get to enjoy it, especially against them, especially against that horrible, rotten, rancid, scummy football club. I will always delight in beating them. Do you know what? I'll tell you one thing.

5:11Jack:I'll tell you why I find it particularly brilliant, why I particularly like it. It's because it rattles them. It rattles them. And the whole sort of the wave already on Twitter that you can see of that. Oh, well, oh, well, who cares? That's what Tottenham do. Tottenham win when it doesn't matter. You know, it's rattled them. You know, it's rattled them. And that is, you know, that's the real quiz. That's the real quiz.

5:40I want to, I want to complain, right? Who can I write? Who can I write a letter of complaint to, please?

5:46Jack:P.O. Box. give me the P.O. box and the relevant authority that I need to write my strongly worded letter of complaint to about the referee. What's going on there? I get it, right? I get it if we're playing in a Champions League final and Kevin Danso does what he does. I said a final because I was thinking one step ahead. I was thinking I was going to say Kevin Danso and I was talking about a Champions League final. And so I said a final, a fino. I'm thinking phyllo, aren't I? Nice phyllo pastry. What's it? The Greek thing, spanktopia, or whatever you call it. You know, the nice feta, spinach, phyllo pastry.

6:31Lovely.

6:32Jack:Lovely job. I'm getting distracted now. You can tell it's lunchtime. What the hell is it going on about? So, Kevin Danso brings down the geezer. It's a pre-season friendly ref. is a pre-season friendly, right? Go have a word, say, I'm going to let you off. Look, we all know that's a red card. Calm it down, son. Slap on the wrist, slap on the bottom. Get on with the game. Give him a yellow and just give him a look. No more nonsense, right? Get out, get some minutes in your legs. Have fun. That's what a referee does, right? Especially in a pre-season game, right? I get it. I get that the referee's obligation is to the game.

7:13Jack:it's to the rules of the game right so i do kind of understand that to a degree however right if the obligation is to the game then also there's an obligation to the spirit of said game the spirit of the occasion this being a pre-season game that has been you know it's two top premier league English clubs two big rivals that have gone across the other side of the world a lot of fans have paid a lot of money to watch that game I've heard there's there's protests and all that type of stuff the Sydney FC game apparently the tickets for this you know these these games out there in Sydney have been extortionate so fans have paid a lot of money for that right you've also got two clubs, two squads of players that have flown all the way across the world want to get a few minutes in their legs want to just go through the motions ahead of a new season to send a player off in a pre-season game for a non-violent challenge I could understand it if he's gone in and elbowed him with malice he's gone in high on his leg or something with malice but with all of these pre-season games there's always been an air of like wwe about it right there's an air of scripting about it just get over yourself a bit clean shirt you know it's very very um actually no uh by the by the letter of the law that's uh that's a sending off So, mate, you're not lying.

8:57It serves no purpose. It serves no purpose to send him off there at all. But I tell a lie. The purpose it serves, I guess, is that Tottenham now get to say, against all odds, against all odds, we beat Chelsea. We beat horrible, smelly, stinking Chelsea.

9:22in a, what's going on there?

9:25Jack:In a, you know, otherwise meaningless pre-season friendly. That's lovely. It's lovely. It's very nice to beat them. I am happy about that. That is good. What are some thoughts? What are some takeaways from today's epic, epic clash, Epic Antipodean standoff between Tottenham and Chelsea.

9:57Jack:We defo need a new number nine, don't we? We need another goal scorer. We need another option. Richarlison's come up at the end there, got the goal. Well done, lads. Dominic Solanke has been injured. You would imagine going through the gears. But the problem with Dominic Solanke for me, and it's not just for me because it's something that I see a lot of people saying it's something that I agree with it's something I thought independently all right like I'm not I'm not just sitting there looking what are other people saying about stuff I'm gonna say I agree with that one I do I mean I have autonomy all right you know coming at me like that saying that like I'm some sort of a simp can't think for myself do you know I mean like um but I see a lot of other people say that uh that Dominic Solanke is a good player he's a fine footballer and he is you know um the penalty at Frankfurt en route to his winning the Europa League lovely the little kind of scorpion kick thing that he did who was that against I can't remember who that was it was against Arsenal who was it against it was a nice goal so he did that you know he did a he he did a good goal and he's scored a penalty against frankfurt so you know he's he's a good player and he's shown at bournemouth he can be very very good he struggles with fitness a lot um but i think the main thing he struggles with and we saw it today again i know it's a pre-season but it's something we've seen pretty much throughout his career at spurs is he just doesn't seem to be that alert in the box it's kind of strange it's kind of strange for somebody that is billed as a goal scorer really to seemingly have so little killer instinct about him and today was just kind of one of those like it was one of those sort of reminders i don't know if you ever get like i'm trying to think of like a a suitable sort of example um to compare this to like the pre-season friendly thing I can't really think on the spot I'm not expressions I'm not sharp I'm not switched on enough to do the sort of stuff that he does thinking of things on the spot but look

12:27Jack:today is not the be all and end all Solanke is a good player right Solanke is a good player I do think he'll work quite well in this De Zerbi system however I think if we want to go if we want to advance we want to go on a level I mean I don't mean go on from being a 17th place team I think you know what I mean go back to being the sort of team that pushes for the kind of leapfrogs Villa again right

12:58Jack:we need better than we need better than Slanky I think we need a striker that can get involved um

13:13yeah um I don't know it all sounds so harsh it all sounds so harsh and I don't you know I'm not I'm not meaning

13:21Jack:to be harsh or anything I'm not sitting here trying to be horrible trying to be nasty about like any Spurs players um as I keep saying my whole thing is I want to be I want to be positive this season I want to look forward to it all I want to you know go into this year with like vigor and excitement i don't want this sort of shadow of 270th place finishes hanging over us anymore all that type of thing right i want it to be fun again let's make tottenham fun again all right i'll get that on a cap not a red one though um

15:25Cocktails up here feel just right. Is Cambria amazing? All right. bring a date your team or even your mom book direct at choicehotels.com see you on the roof

15:44and look even even even even if even if slanky

15:51Jack:didn't have you know question marks over his say killer instinct hanging over him there would also be massive question marks over his fitness and his ability to retain fitness his ability to be somebody that we can consistently rely upon um in the team so look there's a lot of today paul o 'keefe dropped the bomber are we allowed to still use bomber like you know it's been a sort of source of um chagrin really hasn't it no not really chagrin just i don't know whatever People have used the word Bomber a lot the last few days and we've been debating the use of it all. Paul O 'Keefe has basically dropped the news that Cody Gakpo is high up on our list of players to bring in.

16:44I'm not going to be as dramatic as to say he's a player that...

16:51Jack:I don't think people are split on it. I kind of get the feeling that the majority of people recognize that Gakpo is a good player. I think just like I'm sort of saying about Solanke right now, I think the discussion generally with him goes to that place where they're like, does he improve us? Is he that good? I personally think he is that good. I think he's a very good player. I really like him. I like the fact that he can play across the front three. I think that's very important for us.

17:35Jack:I think he looks good. Anytime I've sort of watched Liverpool, if it's like an Arsenal hate watch or if it's against us or if it's, you know, whatever, one of those games that's on Super Sunday and you're sat on the sofa after a roast dinner, then I've always sort of thought Gakpo's look decent I've always thought he's looked quite good and I have seen some people sort of make the point that why are we allowing Liverpool to buy Barcola because that's kind of what they'll probably do sell us Gakpo for whatever 60 70 mil something like that and then use that money to us Barcola yeah I can kind of I can kind of see that but you know it's not it's not like i don't know i just i don't think we can stop doing whatever it is we're going to do on account of what somebody else is going to do look liverpool arsenal teams like that as much as i come on here right and i say the 217th place finishes that we've had probably aren't the most accurate reflection of tottenham hotspur stature as a club and what we could achieve if we sort of sorted things out I think I can also sit here and quite easily and comfortably say Arsenal and Liverpool are in a different universe to us right now and hopefully they won't be come the end of this season but right now they're in a different universe you know these are two teams that have just won the Premier League very very recently these are two teams that already have massive gargantuan international fan bases

19:21Jack:so on and so forth right i don't need to tell you what you already know about these two teams so to sort of to to i don't know to hand ring about like signing a liverpool player because it means they might be able to sign somebody that probably wouldn't be interested in coming to Tottenham anyway. And also would probably still be signed by Liverpool, whether or not we buy one of their players. I just, do you know what I mean? Like, just don't, I don't know. Don't, don't concern yourself with all that. Like I see, do you know what I mean? I'm seeing sort of a lot of spurs at the moment, getting all sort of upset and wound up about, um, Vinicius Junior maybe going to us.

20:04what's the point like if he goes if he goes there he goes there do you know i mean they already won the league last year vinicius jr is a fine player he's a good player is he a completely flawless player is he a player that you can sit there comfortably and say he's going to settle in the premier league he's going to completely get along with michael arteta and isn't going to fall foul of Arteta and his sort of strange personality? No. Do you know what I mean? I'm not going to sit here and be like, I don't care if Arsenal.

20:45Jack:Yeah, of course. If they drop 100 plus mil on someone like Vinicius Jr., huge, huge statement signing like that. Of course, it's that bit of me as a Spurs fan that's going to be like, well, that's kind of annoying.

20:59But I'm not that bothered about it. Do you know what I mean? like if it was Mbappe that's one thing right if if they sign Mbappe then I'm sat here thinking

21:11Jack:they are probably going to do the Champions League this year like they're probably going to take that next step and do it signing Vinicius Junior I'm like yeah they're they're going to be the team to beat probably for the Premier League title again um they'll probably go deep in the Champions League but I don't know what am I going on about them I don't need I don't need to talk about this the point comes back to really Spurs are in a good place Spurs are spending money we're spending money on good players I look at look again preseason right Sandro Tonali today scored a nice goal yeah it was it was deflected but it was still you know it's a decent goal he got into the right position he made that opportunity happen fine you know good but aside for that I just thought most of what he was doing he's just one of those players that immediately like exudes a level of class about him um I just think he was very like crisp in most of his play very polished very good just suddenly immediately looked like a a step above most of the players that we've had um kind of really kind of like a younger less injured less ravaged by injuries Rodrigo Bentenka but maybe with a bit more about him maybe with a bit more of that kind of pep to just in to get towards the final thirds to have shots like we saw today that result in goals um so I was very very impressed with him I was very impressed with Van Hecker um I mean as I've said on this pod already Van Hecker is like one of my one of my hot takes around him is that very very quickly very very quickly the discourse around Tottenham having their pants pulled down how much we spent on a player that was going to be a free transfer in a few months time or whatever it's going to disappear and people are going to say van ecker for 50 mil is an incredible bit of business um i think he yeah i just think he looks like a a very a very very good player very very good player um very very very can i say very anymore very very very good player very pleased very happy very tottenham oh but i do i like him archie gray not suited to write back i don't think but again i i don't know i don't know what you're watching or who you're watching if you don't rate Archie Gray, to be honest.

24:15Jack:He's clearly a very, very talented player. Very nice on the ball. Much like I was saying of Tonali, very crisp, very assured in much of his play. There's a level of maturity there for a player that is as young as he is. I echo all of the sentiments. Again, no, I'm not thinking for myself. I'm not making a good case of this, am I? I echo the sentiments of somebody else. I want the validation of doing a podcast, but I lack the conviction to really have my own opinions. I need to offset them by saying somebody else said it first. If you don't agree with it, well, it wasn't me that said it in the first place.

24:57Weasel, it's pathetic, isn't it? It's pathetic.

25:06Jack:Arch Gray's good. other people have said he's going to go on and be one of Tottenham's top players he's going to be a future captain I agree wholeheartedly I really really like him I really really like him do you know who else I really I've gone from very to really do you know who else is really Tottenham really good I really like Matisse Tell I often say Mathis and I've been pulled up on that it's Matisse, Matisse, Matisse-Tel.

25:41I, look,

25:44Jack:Telstans, Telstans, the trough is filling. The trough is filling this season. I'm telling you. Piggies, Piggies going to eat good. Piggies going to eat good.

It could be chronic migraine, 15 or more headache days a month, each lasting four hours or more.

27:12Botox, Autobotulinum Toxin A, prevents headaches in adults with chronic migraine. It's not for those who have 14 or fewer headache days a month. Prescription Botox is injected by your doctor. Effects of Botox may spread hours to weeks after injection, causing serious symptoms. Allerge your doctor right away as difficulty swallowing, speaking, breathing, eye problems, or muscle weakness can be signs of a life-threatening condition. Patients with these conditions before injection are at highest risk. Side effects may include allergic reactions, neck and injection site pain, fatigue, and headache.

27:40Allergic reactions can include rash, welts, asthma symptoms, and dizziness. Don't receive Botox if there's a skin infection. Tell your doctor your medical history, muscle or nerve conditions, including ALS Lou Gehrig's disease, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, and medications, including botulinum toxins, as these may increase the risk of serious side effects. Why wait? Ask your doctor. Visit BotoxChronicMigraine.com or call 1-800-44-BOTOX to learn more.

28:06Jack:As a pal of mine said on WhatsApp up during the game if tell was a player that we'd signed for 70 80 mil this window people would be buzzing with what they've seen thus far from him and i agree i think he's dangerous i just there's something there's something about his movement the quick changes of directions the pretty neat nice ball control that he has he's getting so close so close to just taking it that next step being the guy that can run at a defender skin him skin a second defender make good space for himself and then apply that crew like like clinical finish because that's that's probably just the the the thing that's just been missing from his game a bit during his Tottenham career thus far is just that last little bit of just like really really clinical finishing um

29:19Jack:but i think i think he's great i spoke to flab about it a lot um the other day when i had him on the pods and obviously the the sort of point that we we arrived at on that one was that he's a you know he is a great player he's a really good player he's been an exciting player at Bayern Munich for a good few years and when we were first linked to him he was seen as like such an exciting player that it was the type of deal that people like that's not going to happen Spurs aren't going to get Matis Tell like that's not it's not a thing you know they're not you're not swimming in that pond Tottenham like this is one of Europe's most elite upcoming young oh and they've signed him oh and they've gotten him they've they've got him they've got that one across the line you know so there's plenty there's plenty plenty plenty of time and I think there's going to be plenty of opportunities for him to make his mark at Tottenham I feel like Deserby likes him I feel like Deserby will like that type of player could he play number nine I'm not so sure I'm not so sure in the modern game if you like but maybe he could but I prefer him I prefer I'm coming in from the wing anyway and doing what he does.

30:53Jack:If he can just add more goals to his game with more consistency, maybe every now and again, just kind of concede that you can score ugly goals as well.

31:09Then we might be, you know, we might be on something. I'm a big fan. Big fan of Matty's tale. um Robbo Andy Robertson just looked great again I thought I think it sounds sort of like mad to say

31:28Jack:he's going to be a bit of a revelation for Spurs this year but the sort of the signing of Robertson was one that was treated with like a real kind of level of negativity I guess or at the very least antipathy um what i'm looking for

31:53antipathy people weren't asked people were just like meh you know it's all right i was sort of thinking like apathetic what's the word i'm looking for i don't know

32:08Jack:people are apathetic about the signing and fine you know I kind of get that I was I was probably like I probably wasn't like buzzing about it there's a bit of me I thought yeah there's I see why we've done this and I think there's a lot of positives to the deal but hopefully this isn't the only thing we do all summer and it's turned out not to be the only deal we've done all summer so now I think I can kind of reflect on it and be like I quite like it I think it's quite good and already what I've seen of him in preseason shows that there is talent there it is only preseason and the premier league is a long hard tough league so we'll see how he's getting on come christmas time but i think he's looking like a bit of a revelation already um he's just got a lot he's got a lot of ability he's got a lot of ability a really good player um who else

33:10Jack:can't really think kinski kinski of course some wonderful saves in there um really really nice one of the main things i've always been sort of concerned about with kinski is that i never found his shot stopping to actually be that good it was good today i thought good performance from him made a couple of crucial saves and ultimately you know we've gone on to win the game which is good it's wonderful it's lovely look williams barnett came on again nice do you know i mean it was uh it was you know okay um kyra martin isn't it is that the lad's name yeah Rio Kourou Martin wonderful wonderful run from him into the box just just dinking the ball onto the top of the crossbar I mean what a goal that would have been for like a you know for a young player I think I think they said in the commentary he's like 20-21 so yeah you know nice nice um lovely williams barnett nice ty hall my biggest take on ty hall is that i don't know if anyone else sees it he looks a bit like harry kane like actually like facially he sort of looks like harry kane it's kind of weird um just have a look just have a look just have a look at ty hall see what you think you'll see it it's just sort of just kind of there there's there's it's kind of a thing there about it um anyone else come on anyone else sort of do anything that was particularly impressive no no i don't think so i don't think so um yeah all in all beat chelsea good nice well done Tottenham Hotspur who do we have next is it the okay so we've got Getafe next not until the 8th of August so is that us are we coming back from are we coming back from Australia now or what yeah it's in London
