In short

Reaction to Tottenham’s 3-0 away win at Everton, with debate over whether Spurs’ conservative style under manager Thomas Frank is “boring” but effective, plus discussion of squad selection and upcoming matches (League Cup and Newcastle; Chelsea/Arsenal title context).

Guest backgrounds

No named guests appear in the transcript; it’s a solo host reaction with audience comments.

Key claims

Spurs were clinical and got a clean sheet, including set-piece goals; second half was “atrocious”/low intensity after taking the lead. The host argues the style may be what’s required for Premier League success (citing Arsenal’s solidity). Frank is praised for maximizing available players, but criticized for the Bentancur-Polina double pivot and for not starting Pedro Porro/Pat Matassar more.

Notable examples

Vicario’s saves; Mickey van de Ven scoring twice; Koulis/“Kala Moani” nuisance effect; Xavi Simons’ knock affecting intensity; upcoming Newcastle away and potential Chelsea/Arsenal yardstick games.

47Come on, you Spurs. Come on, Tottingham Hotspur. Up the Spurs. 3-0. first team to win at the Hill Dickie Bum Stadium first team to what is that I think it might be in the Premier League I can't remember can't remember if it's in the Premier League or in all competitions whatever we won there no one else has first team to score a set piece against Everton and 3-0 another clean sheet it's funny I was talking about this in the in the pre-match I was actually quite staggered by by how well we're doing in the league I haven't really been paying attention to the league table at all you know what's the point of this time in the season and then suddenly I was like goal difference is good amount of points is good all of it points to good there's little things on there there's little things where you think like that Villa game you win that who was it what was the other rotten game we had this was it Bournemouth do we have but I think we had Bournemouth didn't we at home and that was horrible as well you win those two top of the table so yeah you know

12we're we're doing all right I do have to say and I'm not saying this to be neggy or anything like we've won 3-0 and that's great and that is my my overriding feeling about this match about this evening fantastic scenes and that is really you know like do you know i mean we can't be you can't be so desensitized to football that a 3-0 away win is not good it is kind of mad how we are smashing teams up away from home and we're terrible at the tottenham hospital stadium and i I speak no word of a lie. You know, I haven't been getting a lot of sleep and stuff lately, so to be fair. But halfway through this game, I suddenly realised, oh, we're actually, we're playing at Everton, not at our ground.

00They do look sort of remarkably similar from the, you know, the television, the broadcast view, right? Remarkably similar grounds. And so it also makes me think, look, if we can go, if we win 3-0 there, why can't we win more games at our gaff? What's going on there? thing is there was a lot of like there was a lot of doom saying ahead of this one a lot of people were saying yeah i'm not feeling too not feeling too optimistic about this one just to say i told you so i was saying before in the pre-match preview on patreon patreon.com slash rtrpod i was saying that the the thing about this one is with everton is they are us we are cut from the same cloth so all bets are off really you know we come into this one and everyone would think yeah Everton are doing well Jack Grealish is really good Spurs just lost to Villa the you know they grinded out a draw away at Monaco in the back of my head I'm like but this is Everton like all the things that we worry about that we do you know Dr.

06Tottenham and all that type of stuff Everton do as well Dr Everton that's it let's call him that Dr Everton

16because you know I get it I get why there was some trepidation going into this one Everton are alright and stuff at the moment but equally we could I know I know the past few weeks I know the past couple of weeks I've been sort of complaining I got called out for like being a doomer on the on the last pod i did with dan low and i don't know if that wasn't the intention at all the intention is supposed to be to like start conversations that are representative of those that i see happening online so you know a large part of you can't we can't pretend that a large part of the conversation is not is thomas frank good or bad i think i've sort of made my point pretty clear on this one in that i tend to like what it is he's doing, what he's shown so far, and also that he needs to have a bit of time.

13I've also sort of made the point, and I think this is something that a lot of people are actually starting to say now. I've seen a lot of people saying this during the game. Is this a Tottenham issue? Is this a Frank issue? Or is this just football now? Is this what it takes to be a more successful side in the Premier League? is playing a pretty conservative style of football. I think we can say that. The second half of this game was atrocious, wasn't it? From both teams, to be fair. But we had a two-goal lead and we were more than happy, more than content, not really bust a gut trying to score anymore.

54We did it, obviously, because we brought our best midfielder onto the pitch and he scored for us.

03but you know you might not like what it is that Frank's doing and I'm not in love with it I'm not gonna lie like I'm not gonna lie I'm not in love with it but at the same time I like Tottenham winning games I do I do like Tottenham winning games and I'm not really buying I think I think there's a I think there's a huge amount of hypocrisy with a lot of the more puritanical people on this point who really let's be honest gladly shelved those convictions when Ange played a football that was reminiscent to this to win us the Europa League you know I haven't seen one coherent retort to that point and I've made that several times over the course of this season you know um but is that that's not a dig at ang like if anything at the time i was saying that's the smart thing for ang to do that frankfurt game that frankfurt game was maybe maybe the best game that we've seen from from ang postacoglu when he was in charge no it's not it's not the best game to be fair it's not um but it was in that should we say in that in the death spiral of the postacoglu era that was one of his better managed games winning away at frankfurt was unbelievable but we played a style of football that was remarkably similar to this

34it just seems to be that this is this is the way that you got to you know you got great look at look arsenal like let's actually look at arsenal you know they are they're gonna they're gonna walk the premier i mean well we are breathing down their next that's all i'm saying like you know liverpool have let us down city are seemingly letting us down maybe it's up to uh thomas franken i mean wouldn't i wouldn't be able to handle that imagine getting to the business end of the premier league if we were if we were in a whisker within a whisker of it and they were still up there um but i think look i'm not even trying to like prepare myself for it and all that type of thing I think they've walked the Premier League this year I think I honestly I know there's a long way to go and all that I think they've already got it sewn up to be honest um nobody is close to being as solid as they are nobody is close to seemingly having as much of a plan as they do you know it's just it's they've they've they've built a team they've spent a lot of money they've stuck by Arteta and also as is always required in you know in seasons like this they're getting they're just getting that slice of luck that you need in so much as Liverpool are having a bad season thus far anyway and City are you know stuttering

59and I just I don't know I can't I can't see Arsenal slipping up but are they going to be complaining come the end of the season if they win that if they win the champions league as well which please please look i can you know i've seen them i've seen them win i've seen them win the double i've seen them win the premier league all right it's not going to be it's not going to be pleasant but i can take it all right then winning the champions league though no thank you no no thank you right let's not be having that but if they do if they win a imagine imagine imagine a stench of them winning a treble and if they do win that treble not a single one of them is going to be complaining about the fact that they didn't play their class null class null on the carpet football are they they are they are stoked with money they are absolutely stinking out the premier league this year but they are head and shoulders is the best team in it.

03Right now, we're sat third in the Premier League. We've actually scored more goals than Arsenal this season. Scored more goals than, hang on. So us, us, City and Chelsea, yeah, us, City and Chelsea are the leading scorers in the Premier League. Us and City, yeah. Got the best goal difference. No, sorry. No, I stand corrected. Arsenal have the best goal difference. Yeah, Arsenal do. Damn. Damn. They won the goal difference. It's just what it takes though. Is this what it takes to be successful in the Premier League? At the moment, maybe it is. And if that is the case, then we probably have to concede.

56I mean, look, I say we probably have to concede. I'm saying this like, you know,

03I'm gutted about this or something. I quite like Thomas Frank. I quite like him. Yeah, I do find the football a bit boring at the moment at times, but I quite like him. I like him as a bloke. I think his chat is pretty decent. And I also still stand by the point that we don't have Madison. We don't have Kulisevsky. We lost Sonny in the summer. Imagine if we bring in a Semenyo or someone like that. I think we'll be, I think we'll be miles better in an attacking sense. I mean, we already started to look a bit better today while Kala Moani was, Kala Moani was like, and Phil said this to me on WhatsApp, he was like, he was like oddly effective despite not really doing anything.

47And I think that was quite a fair thing to say. He sort of, he stayed forwards. He was running into space. He was looking to get on the end of things. And he just seemed to be like a menace. That was my take on him anyway. I felt like he was a bit of a nuisance and he gave, he was always giving sort of Everton's defence something to think about, which is not something you've really been able to say for Richarlison for the past few games. I think that intensity in the final third did start to tail off a bit after Xavi Seamans picked up that knock, like he was playing pretty well up until that point and then picked up a knock and yeah, I think his performance level really did dip after that.

28um he was not very happy to be taken off but you know i've seen some people say oh i don't like that attitude i like that i want to see that i want to see players not want to come off i want to see players stay on and fight and fight for the shirt and all that type of thing right you want to see that that's what you want from players um so i do think i'll sort of you know our intensity our the invention that we we were bringing to the game did tail off as soon as siemens took that knock um and color moani clearly you know tired got tired and frank said that frank has said that you know he's not really he said that in a pre-match presser he's not ready for 90 minutes week in week out yet um and he doesn't really want to do that to him i was surprised to see him start today um i really was but you know nice it's good to see it get mixed up a bit um

24Brennan Johnson is just you know he could like Dan Lowe said to me the other day he could do nothing again ever in a Spurs shirt and you'd have a huge level of respect and thanks for him for what he did in Bilbao and for the goals he scored last season and everything like that but you know I don't think he's he's not very effective is he when you sort of see Mahmoud Kudus come in and you can see what he's capable of you do sort of have to demand a bit more from Breden Johnson don't you but you know 3-0 we've won 3-0 we sat third in the table and got a big game big game in the week against Newcastle but it's nice to have this sort of momentum going into it and like I say you know in some ways I'm not that worried about it.

24It is the League Cup, so I'd like to see us make a fist of it. I'd like to see us win the competition. Newcastle is obviously a tough place to go, but we're five points ahead of them this season so far. They've been okay. They've stuttered a bit as well, I think. They've got some good players. They've got some dangerous players, but we play really well away from home. So it's going to be interesting to see how these two styles mesh. You know, Eddie Howe does, I think I would say anyway, look, I'm not a tactical, but I would say on the eye test, I think Newcastle play somewhat more expansively than Tottenham.

05But then I would probably argue that they've got the personnel to be able to do that, whereas Spurs aren't quite there.

15But we've won 3-0. we won 3-0 away from home at Everton I'm happy with that like I'm happy we won away at Leeds another team that hadn't been beaten there for a long time we've now won away at Everton another team that hadn't been beaten at home for a long time you know we can choose to ignore these things or we can accept the fact that even if we don't particularly like it we are an effective side we're an effective outfit frank as he keeps saying in his in his presses and stuff it is his job to maximize the components that he has at his disposal keeps being asked about like the players and is he sad about not having madison available to him and all that type of thing and he's been very respectful to the players he does have at his disposal but you know he is sort of saying um it's my job to to make do to do the best with what I have at my disposal.

11And I think we can probably say he's doing that, can't we? I think the only grey area for me is the Bentancur-Polinha double pivot, right? I think that's the thing that I know people are going to say, what do football fans know this man's in training with him all the time? Yeah, fair, fine. I get that. But I still just don't quite get it, especially because I see Saar look so effective every time he comes onto the pitch, every time he started for us. and uh he was he was asked before the game wasn't he frank about why he's not playing sarr um and he said he's not been injured he said maybe we need to take a precaution or something but he has been impressed with him and he just wants to see what everybody else has got about him i don't know it was a little bit mealy-mouthed i'm gonna say like i i know he's not gonna say well actually in in these couple of games i told him to do this specific thing and he's not doing it he's not taking on the the learnings I'm giving to him so I'm dropping him until I feel like he's a player that's more receptive to to my methods or whatever I'm just speculating like but you know I mean if that's if that's what it is if that's why he is dropping Pat Matassar because Polini and Benz and Kerr are you know they're they're more senior they're taking on board what the manager's saying or something I don't know you know maybe it is something like that but I think it is to the detriment of the team overall I do think it is because I think Pat Matassar was he started this season brilliantly and I think he's a brilliant player um the world's biggest soccer tournament has arrived and you can trade the entire tournament on Kalshi on Kalshi you can trade every match from the opening stage all the way to the final on Kalshi you're trading against peers in a live market meaning there's no house and as the probability changes you can buy in and out of your position for a limited time download the Kalshi app and use code cup 26 to get$10 when you trade 10 K A L S H I Cal sheet.

29Set up required compatibility and availability varies 18 plus. PG has said the Hill Dickhead Stadium more like. I hope that doesn't get me demonetized. It was worth it though. Isla Lilywhite, I've slated Vicario on here quite a bit recently, but got to give him his flowers again. Outstanding. Hashtag you've seen the Tottenham now, F off home. He was pretty outstanding today. He made a number of very, very good saves. I will give him that I'm sure I'll be I'm sure I'll be pleased to hear um Anon says hello Jack hope fatherhood is treating you well very well thank you sir um not the worst result a star boy yes mate um welcome in pieces says congrats thank you very much mate um also says today was good without being spectacular we're getting there but still some way to go maybe one or two in January if we can get half decent players and another two or three in the summer and we'll be cooking yeah you know that's it just i mean this is the main thing this is one of the main things that arsene have proved as well despite the whatever the method of playing stuff you just got to keep buying players you have to keep you have to keep incrementally improving the squad even if you look at some of the players that we got and you think he's really good we don't need to why are we buying in another whatever position we've got these players.

56If the decision's made that there's an incremental gain to be had, then that's all that matters really, isn't it? If we're getting proper players and everything, right?

09Dehoefv says the architects were the same for Everton and Tottenham's ground. So it doesn't surprise me. It doesn't surprise me at all. Adam Michy says, top scorers in the league with our set-piece clogger ball. just wait for our attacking players to return and we'll definitely be winning 5-0 every week that'd be very nice mate that'd be very nice it doesn't sound too hopeful on Solanke he sort of he kept making he kept making a very clear point before the game to say it's not going to be long for Romero believe it when I see it it's not going to be very long for a doggy as well they're both playing on grass or this type of thing with Solanke it was a bit more like yeah he's progressing so you know it just doesn't it doesn't seem good on Solanke does it at all which is a shame because he's he's he's a very good player but you know it just does it doesn't seem like we have a clear well we don't have a clear timeline not it doesn't seem like we don't have a timeline on when he's going to return um and really what's sort of going on I I think did somebody say his nabductor muscle?

19I don't know, whatever. Delphicronic says, that's the Benton Kerr I remember. He was brilliant tonight. He was pretty good to be fair.

31Welcome in Pieces also says, I've got to point out that eight of our nine injured players could be starters. I think that is a fair point. That is a fair point. YouTube Guy says, Coise, three points, three goals, none conceded. not a great performance but we're sitting third hate to say it but it looks like arsenal are going to walk the league unless we can do the double over them it does look like they're going to walk the league doesn't it mate um also huge congrats on the addition to the family thank you very much mate appreciate it um was johnson says jack's dad spurs a third mickey scored two is Chelsea next weekend so we should probably enjoy this win Coys that'd be nice to do them wouldn't it they just they just lost to Sunderland now that would be do you know what if we if we turn them over if we turn Chelsea over I think that is going to that will win over a number of like borderline Frank's skeptics I think um because I think being the sort of team that can turn up against the likes of Chelsea, the likes of Arsenal is important to Spurs.

44And not many managers have managed to crack that down the years. But if Frank can get a good start against Chelsea, then, you know, that'd be great. Because they're always that yardstick this point of the season, aren't they? Where, I mean, obviously, I think most recently and famously with Ange Postacoglu. But the Chelsea game's always around this time of year. They love nothing more than bursting a bit of a bubble for Tottenham. stopping a bit of our momentum, you know, so we'll see. Darren says, I'm sure you've seen the stat that Arsenal are 17th in the league from open play goals. I don't like where the Premier League is at, but if you can't beat them, join them.

31Stephen King says, hello, Jack, question. what's worse your mechanic sucking air through his teeth before giving an eye-watering quote or Gary Neville doing co-coms and inhaling sharply every time we make a tackle I mean it's we're just lucky that remember every time every time Romero makes a tackle you got from Neville haven't you oh I think he's been a naughty boy there I think he's been a naughty boy there what was the nonsense he was talking about as well saying that the yeah Everton's goal it got denied he was saying oh I think this is a 50-50 one it's actually two of their players two of their players sat in an offside position holding the goalkeeper back obstructing the goalkeeper what's 50-50 about that like what is 50-50 about that if we're talking about it as being 50-50 through the eyes of our, you know, let's be honest, fairly poor and inconsistent standard of officiating in the Premier League, then yeah, I'll take it as that.

30But if you're saying like, as a scholar of the game, that that's a 50-50, come on, mate, behave.

44Anon says, no more looking at Arsenal, look at Bournemouth. Go on, go on. Fine. Wes Johnson also says can we big up big Kev what a player he's good he had that what he had that he had one moment where I thought he's got lucky there he was he was it was a bit sort of rash in the box he made a sort of poor pass and then he scrambled to try and win possession back he just about got it it was a bit clumsy on a on another day it would have been a penalty to Everton like if things had just worked out a little bit differently. But other than that, yeah, he does seem pretty talented, doesn't he? And it was, how much was it?

28How much was he? Not a lot, was he? It's like 20 mil or something, wasn't he? He was like a good bit of scout in that big dance.

40William Gardner just says, you've got to imagine the feeling if we beat Arsenal when we meet them, potentially derailing their title charge. And look, mate, if we're sat in this sort of position and we're beating them, then, you know, maybe, maybe we're inserting ourselves into a title charge, right? Wouldn't that be funny? Wouldn't that be funny if Spurs just went and won the league this year? I wouldn't be getting too excited about it, but still.

07Ares says, massive congratulations on your new arrival. Great to get the win today. The football is hard to watch. Fine when we win, not so much when we lose. hope we get to see a bit more assault agreed mate and thank you very much mike says feeling better than after the monaco game not going to moan when we still won 3-0 and that's it isn't it we've won 3-0 away from home in the premier league and one of the other points i was making in the i know i keep referencing myself but whatever one of the other points i was making in the in the in the pre-match pod is that when you do go through the premier league and and I think this becomes increasingly the case with every year that goes by pretty much every game in the premier league is a tough game.

52I don't look at any, really any of the teams in the premier league and think this is going to be easy. Like this is now we'll walk this one. So, you know, three nil, three nil away from home. You got to take it. Avenue. You got to take it. Brian Park said the disallowed girl Gary Neville thought the disallowed girl was 50-50 he absolutely hates us yes mate I you know I agree um Ben Mathias says I love watching this away from home hard to beat resolute professional just need to find a way to be convincing at home 13 points away from home already this season compared to last season 17 it's quite mad isn't it also big kev is a great option for us knows his role and does it well quality signing he's proving to be zeros and one says red inch or orange inch and that's a uh that's a uh if you know you know one that's what i'm going to say on that one

57uh and also welcome if you're not going to make any of your to trunk animations anymore can you at least do some gary neville based ones that voice was spot on i've often thought about that maybe i should span it out into wider football and stuff but then i don't the thing that i enjoyed about doing those like my animations and stuff when i you know when i do them from time to time is i know like tottenham so well i know they're my new shy of the humor and i can be quite niche with it if you're doing like wider sort of scale things about like football in general you've got to be a bit more basic about it don't you and uh you know um i'm anything other than basic you know i'm i'm i'm too uh i'm just i'm just too too uh too too smart there you go that's the word too smart with my humor um to reduce myself to bruno fernandez being a rap banter and all that type of stuff you know it's just it's just how we roll um here at at Ted Trunk Towers.

02Shall we, shall we do the players? I think we should do the players. It's weird. Like, do you know what? I'm buzzing about it. I am actually really happy. We've won 3-0. I have to bear in mind, I am a bit tired, right? I am a bit tired and the sort of the, the wherewithal to, to do these sort of, these post-match things. Look, as well, it's not, no, I'm not, I'm not just going to blame this all on my, on my circumstances. What I am going to say is that just, I just, I try to keep my powder dry a bit. I don't really have a fully formed opinion on all of this stuff. And I think that's the important thing to talk about.

35You know, it's like, I like what we're doing. I like it when Spurs are winning. I really want Spurs to be a really good side again. Yes, I do find the football quite boring. But am I willing to accept that? Yeah, I think I am. I think I'm a weasel. I think I'm one of those weasels I've been hearing about. that uh you know do i know our history i do but you know at the same time our history is littered with us messing up big opportunities and stuff like that so if we can just be a bit more if we can be a bit more sensible if we can be a bit more lib dem about everything right then you know we can have a nice a nice cream tea at the end of the season can't we i don't know i don't know what that's got to do being lived there i'm not doing politics jokes i'm not like shut up let's do the players and again i'm gonna say now you know i'm about to see the players so there's gonna be an ad break coming up right if you don't like ads sign up for patreon join the supporter tier on patreon one pound 50 a month patreon.com slash rtr pods help keep the lights on support the show if you enjoy it thanks a lot um there's also the inner sanctum tier where you get extra stuff hey it's bill from the bill simmons podcast fifa world cup 26 fans listen up is the official beer sponsor of the fifa world cup 26 michelob ultra is giving away one million dollars worth of fifa world cup 26 tickets and prizes enter now at michelobultra.com slash superior access slash fifa world cup 26 michelobultra fifa world cup 26 superior access no purchase necessary.

24yeah his passing was really good i'm just having a look now um good performance i like him you know did he get an assist? I think he did get an assist from the corner did he? for Mickey's second goal I want to say big Kevin Danso fantastic performance today lovely piece of business wonderful player Mickey van der Ven he's definitely growing into his role as captain two goals two very well taken goals as well Jack Grealish was absolutely rattled by him today

00very good very good Jed Spence alright today got skinned I mean he had a to be fair to him I think he was coming up against Ndi wasn't he who is is a slick baller Ndi like what a player no I would hope no penitentiary post tonight for Jed because that would be that would be inaccurate I would say um so yeah fair enough to him tough player to come against maybe underestimated him a bit don't know Jao Polina decent did his job didn't he Rodrigo Bentancur very very good as well I felt fair play you know I don't really like that midfield pairing but to the point I've been making all podcast if it works then if it ain't broke don't fix it Brennan Johnson was he playing apparently so Mohamed Kudus lovely player lovely player um I don't think it was an you know vintage performance from him but he's just he's a wonderful footballer isn't he lovely corner as well the first uh the first ball he whipped in he obviously didn't get the the assisted you know kind of sort of went off of Ben Tanker or the Everton player I'm not sure um before Van Der Ven headed it in but it was still a lovely lovely corner from Koulis real dangerous one um Xavi Siemens I actually think he was I think he was decent he was a lot more meaningful in a lot of his play today I think that changed a bit after he took that knock but you know good performance nonetheless less from him um good to see him continue to grow into his role and that's what frank said before the game as well you know you got got to give him a break he's he's sort of he's he's still adapting to the league and everything um randall colo moani good really good today you know i couldn't like like like we're saying at the top like you know he was sort of really effective without actually really doing a lot but he was he felt like he was a constant menace um so let's hope for a bit more of that Lucas Bergvall yeah it was okay when he came on he's in a sort of funny place at the moment but again people are sort of making big big calls on him about how good or not he is as a player he's still a kid you know he got chucked in probably way ahead of time he's shown already that he can be brilliant there's going to be you Progress is not always linear, right?

39So we've seen enough from Bergwald to suggest that he's a really talented player and one that we should feel quite lucky to have. So fine. Richarlison, yeah, fine, whatever. Pat Matissar, why isn't he starting games? Give him more time on the pitch because he shows you pretty consistently how good he can be every time he is on the pitch. Mathis Tell, it came on the 93rd minute, didn't he? Wasn't an awful lot to do from that. But yeah, look, all in all, Spurs have won 3-0. We sat third in the table. We can't really complain about that, can we? It's a good performance. I think Everton are actually, I've got to say, I think Everton are a decent side.

30So that makes me sort of happier with that performance. Grealish, you know, somebody I was really dead against Spurs going for this summer because I thought he's not going to be any good. He looks like a lovely player. Ndi's wonderful player. I think they're a decent side, Everton. So I'm pretty happy with that. It's decent, isn't it?

00I've already done the Patreon plug, haven't I? I'm going to do another pod tomorrow, obviously during the day with Phil. So great. I mean, that's Monday. Spurs have climbed to third in the Premier League after a solid, but strangely unexciting win away at whatever Everton's new stadium is called. The first team to score from a set-piece against Everton, as well as being the first team to beat them at their new ground in the Premier League. Thomas Frank's introduction of Kolo Muani from the beginning was a welcome addition, regardless of the Palhinha x Bentancur double pivot. How good are Spurs? Do we know? No.
