In short

Reaction to Tottenham’s 0-0 draw vs Nottingham Forest, emphasizing “more positives than negatives” after two early-season defeats.

Key claims

Spurs created opportunities and contained Forest; the main issue was finishing/“whisker away” chances. Spurs controlled the game flow more than in a prior frustrating home match (vs Newcastle), but lacked “creative spark” and premium chances to win.

Notable examples

Rodrigo Bentancur “monster” performance (defensive work, clearances, getting into the box); Connor Gallagher strong both offensively/defensively; Sandro Tonali particularly good (harrying Forest midfield). Critiques: Marcos “Tell” end product/sloppy corners; Mudryk largely ineffective; Savio dangerous but sometimes forced/too many touches; Spurs lost control after a “doggy” substitution (Djed Spence/likely a player off—described as losing control when he came off).

2:21You know, I feel a lot more positive about that than a lot of people around me do right now.

2:36In the context of two defeats to start a season, coming away to a pretty hostile grounds, I'll take it.

2:52Jack:I would have been gutted if we'd lost that. I'll put it that way. And they scored.

3:00Jack:Let's get through.

3:09Didn't look very happy. And they scored. I was behaving anyway.

3:23Jack:If you are listening to this, it might not be the cleanest execution as usual. I was at the game, I'm walking out of it now.

3:39It's obviously surrounded by a lot of people.

4:03Jack:that's it so it's surrounded by a lot of people um video goes everywhere now so if you uh want to have a look do um i didn't think that was that bad uh

4:21Jack:i i think there's a lot a lot to take from that that was mostly positive um

4:33Jack:We created opportunities, we contained Forest well.

4:42Jack:There's the clear and obvious sort of issue, which is finishing chances. Whiskey the other way, Mammush has scored that. From where I sat at the time, I was like, he has to get that on target. But when you actually look at the replay, I mean he does, but when you look at the replay, it's so close. Such a whisker away. So I do kind of feel for him.

5:20But aside for that, he's got massive, massive presence up top.

5:26Jack:And De Zerbe alluded to that pre-match, didn't he? he uh he was saying that something about is it like a type of beast or something up front and my moosh is not that type of beast whatever you know something like that you can feel it you can feel that there's no focal point really you wonder if my moosh should be playing off the wing supporting a Solanke or a Richarlison but obviously not a Richarlison anymore

6:09Jack:but shout out to Rodrigo Bentenka first and foremost absolutely monster monster performance today. He was everywhere. Defensively, getting the ball moving, breaking up play, getting into the box, making clearances. I thought he was pretty unbelievable if I'm honest with you.

6:41Connor Gallagher, I know he's not very popular amongst a lot of people, but I thought he was very very good today um both you know offensively and defensively did many of the things i think benson kerr did just perhaps not with as much finesse but he was he was tricky i think on the

7:03Jack:ball um didn't give that forest midfield any sort of time to do anything really

7:15so yeah

7:22really good performance I thought from Gallagher in all truth

7:27Jack:Sandro Tonali I thought was particularly good especially in the first half and periods of the second half.

7:37Real sort of like fight, really getting involved and making his

7:44Jack:presence felt. Again harrying that Forrest midfield, not giving him any time to breathe, no space. I thought overall like midfield was a really really composed really good performance for the most part do they potentially lack that little creative spark yeah potentially it's much just talk about marmouche not really being much of a presence there weren't many many opportunities created for him so you know you can kind of feel for him in not why. Before the season even kicks off, soccer fans are already making predictions. Who wins the league? Who qualifies for Europe? And who's lifting the trophy at season's end?

10:08Oh, yeah.

10:14got a load of buses to the ground by the way if you weren't aware just chucking that in at this point um it was nice to actually be at the ground and have quite a lot of people there

10:29Jack:receive the whole sort of journey and idea in really good uh really good faith a lot of people seem to really enjoy you know i kind of i did that thinking it's going to be quite a niche quite a funny idea for people that like the pod especially like patrons and stuff this seems to have captured the imagination i haven't fully absorbed everything do you mean i've sort of been in the moment with it a bit in the moment man to not overly absorbing every single thing that people are saying to me appreciate all the support anybody that has reached out and says stuff to me it's just it's actually been quite a lot humble brag a surprising amount um i've been surprised by how many people have actually sort of liked the idea and seen where it's come from in terms of like just a bit of a like silly idea that's a bit of fun i think a few years ago all this sort of thing got a bit nasty all got a bit vitriolic didn't it you know if you were doing that sort of thing you were a melt and everyone should pile in on you and everything like that but I think I don't know maybe there's a changing tide where people just want things to be a bit more fun um so that was good I've done a whole video of that so I did a whole thread on it but obviously I've done a whole video on it as well which I will be editing over the next few days the next week or so so I'll go out on my youtube um it should be good really enjoyed it um really fun um

12:27what's one of the more negative points this one tell a lot of people aren't happy with tell

12:43Jack:I thought he was he tried his end product was just lacking so often it was sloppy his corner deliveries were not very good really

13:06Jack:again there's a sort of issue with him

13:12of when he releases the ball

13:17Jack:using the ball in the best possible way which he didn't do very often really not giving up on him but I do think he should have come off a bit earlier and I was surprised that Savio came off before Tell came off.

13:42Mudrick wasn't expecting much from him, it would take some time to get up to speed. He was largely ineffective I thought.

13:52so when we're I guess measuring Tell's performance

14:03Jack:I'd say that he at least offered more than Mudrick did which you know doesn't really say a lot considering that Mudrick has been out for a long time and will take some time to get up to speed

14:21Savio is decent. Really like Savio to be fair.

Read the full transcript

14:29Again, not everything he was doing was like coming off. It wasn't all coming off.

14:44It was often felt a little bit forced. Sometimes he took a few too many touches. Tried to beat his man one too many times. I'm going to avoid any lazy Lucas Moura comparisons but I'm kind of doing that right now aren't I? It's implied.

15:11But what I did like about Savio is that for the most part he was dangerous he got on the ball and I think he caused problems for Forrest, I think he rattled them I think he did stretch play and the more and more he plays the more and more he gets used to this Dezerbi system

15:36the bigger a part of Tottenham's future successes, fingers crossed he will become

15:47but I really liked him

15:54it was it was quite funny before the game obviously

16:01Jack:on one hand there's a part of me thinking that Glasner was trying to was trying to rattle

16:16Jack:deserving um knowing that he can be touchy you know maybe you've seen the stellini brighton thing and saying before the game that you know his tactics are predictable or something to that effect but I've seen a few people say that he's got form for that he's said it with a few other managers in the past and everything like that so you know maybe it's just his schtick his straight talking Austrian I think it is schtick which you know whatever

17:07obviously like he plays

17:12Jack:it would appear a fairly similar type of thing to what Thomas Frank was doing at Brentford and trying to do at Spurs and so I think chances for Forrest in a play that way are going to be at a premium

17:32but they couldn't really take them today.

17:39Jack:I was expecting a bit more from them actually, if I'm honest.

17:48Jack:If I'm honest, I don't know how, I think like with our pressure, we made them fairly uncomfortable. but in terms of like big opportunities there wasn't an awful lot there wasn't an awful lot from us that rattled it was more like the beats of the game emotions in that way that created a sense of panic or unease at times and i think that applies for both teams.

18:24Both teams treated one another with a fair amount of respect I would say. I do feel like Spurs definitely had more of an impetus, more of a drive to perhaps get an early goal, whereas Forest ultimately were trying to pick us off on the break um but i think it was some pretty resolute defending from tottenham to be honest i went in look i'll be honest i went into this one um with a bit of a pre-loaded bias a bit of a pre-loaded opinion that van hecker was not up to much at the moment anyway um that he's disappointed me a bit but i actually thought he was brilliant today i thought he was really calm under pressure i thought he dealt with most things that went his way i thought he read the game really well um

19:34Jack:yeah really impressive i mean mickey van der ven see also a few moments when you know his pace and his sort of athleticism came to the fore for us to help us but for the most part it was a pretty composed performance i think most notably and i'm not really saying this is a criticism of robertson i do feel that like we started to lose a bit of control in the game in the second half. I mean, for a screwing confidence, those birds weren't scoring. For a screwing confidence, they felt like they could snatch it. And that's just how football goes, right? But I do feel like when the doggy came off, we suddenly lost an awful lot of control of the game.

20:34it's a real shame that like a young player in his 20s still can't manage you know an entire 90 minutes consistently

20:49but

20:54it's just kind of the way it seems to be right now

21:00and you know

21:07Robertson's a good player I do rate him I just feel that

21:16the physicality of a doggy

21:21and I think maybe just I don't know his confidence his reading of the game feels just a bit less frantic than Robertson's does. I don't even know if frantic's the word, if that's fair. But that's how it kind of feels.

21:43It feels like a lot of what Robertson's does is rushed. I've got frantic a bit of time. His delivery's great. But.

21:56That control. I don't know. Maybe it's more the tone of the game, where it was going, as opposed to anything that Robertson did individually. It's just something I just noticed at that point.

22:17Kinski, his kicking was good throughout.

22:20Jack:A lot of the people around me were getting very rattled by the playing out from the back. you know people don't love it

22:34makes people feel very uncomfortable I think we all sort of knew that was going to be the case right

22:43that it's a high risk style of football

22:51it's hard to immediately see the upside of it

23:00I'd be a liar if I could tell you I could fully see what the upside to it was but you know

23:14when it works it looks really good that's what I say When you see those few moves, when we knock it about, and it feels like everybody's in the right places, everybody knows what one another is doing.

25:01The football looks good. And Spurs look like they, you know, have a decent amount of control over games. I mean to sort of to Glasner's point about knowing what deserve he does or whatever. He clearly was trying to put pressure on the Spurs defence every time we were kicking it around. Gibbs White was in there trying his best to disrupt.

25:37We've got a hot take on Gibbs White and I'm not saying this as a blanket opinion.

25:44But watching him today, I didn't see a player that was drastically different from Connor Gallagher.

25:53Jack:And I'm not obviously backing up with any data. I'm just simply saying that perceptions shape opinions as much as facts do. And the perception being that Connor Gallagher is more on the sort of Rafa's end of the scale. and Gibbs White is still a competitive midfielder but perhaps somewhat more refined or technical in his kind of output.

26:25But I didn't think the players were vastly different today. I actually think Gibbs White struggled a bit with Tottenham's midfield.

26:37I thought that Schlager player of theirs is decent and I say decent I'm not saying he was incredible you just saw him pick up the ball from deep and he a few times especially in the first half did some real long penetrating runs which could have caused us a few problems. I mean, didn't really, and I guess that's probably

27:15something. To be honest, I don't really remember much of him in the second half.

27:28But yeah, I mean, overall obviously I have no idea what happened with the goal that was disallowed guess it was humble I sort of said on the screen no real idea how accurate or not that was just work out where I'm going

28:03Jack:7b

28:16we were just for the most part just good it was a good composed performance from Tottenham where we controlled the flow of the game really well the Newcastle game was frustrating the other week because I feel like we didn't have as much control as we should have done in a home performance today we felt more like the home team I thought I thought we seemed calmer

28:56and just like it was a bit more in our hands I mean look it's never in your hands fully team can always like hit you on the break or whatever as they demonstrated almost a couple of times

29:15but

29:19for the most part for the most part Spurs were

29:30Jack:the better team I think but just didn't quite have that final bit of quality to create or finish the few chances that they made. So. If you're paying, just wait. Just searching for a drink and get the same thing.

29:58Do you like Oasis? Sorry.

30:05I quite like Oasis.

30:21um

30:21Jack:um sorry i'm just getting a drink and stuff at the station now

30:28cream machine Cheers mate thank you.

30:38This is quite an experience isn't it? Me getting myself some water and a protein shake. My throat is still a bit raw it's quite hard to...

30:53Jack:sorry I was just scanning my uh my water and stuff there it's uh cut the video off um as i was saying like i feel like spurs controlled the game for the most part just didn't create premium opportunities

31:13Jack:and as such we didn't win on another day you know i mean forrest would have gotten that goal and we'll be coming home right now quite gutted that it ended that way

31:29obviously but I feel that for the most part the scoreline is probably a fair enough reflection of the game if we'd have lost that it would have been it would have been really frustrating

31:44Jack:it would have been particularly unfair I mean how much is it fair or not I think the ref had a pretty good performance to be honest Forrest were pretty rough they were trying to sort of you know break a lot of our play they were quite scrappy

32:05Jack:but yeah we were we were generally good I'll be honest okay my Fernandez didn't really have enough time to do anything a few people disappointed he didn't start i'm guessing he was injured that's why you know we didn't start him in this one um as soon as he came on i know he had that one there was one like cross field ball that he played with like the outside of his foot that was just really really delightful um shows you just kind of his ability uh with the ball at its feet how nice it can be anyone else to really call it Kudis was good Kudis was you know he pressured them a lot actually down that right hand side he's just he's just so effective and I think he's he can be somebody for Savio to learn from in terms of you know he can be a flamboyant winger he likes to skim players but I think he also has a better grasp on when is the right time to just play the ball and he nearly did that to like good effect several times Slanky was largely ineffective when he came on I don't think he exploited the space at the top as well as he should have done

33:34maybe I should get on this looks like it is

33:48Let's see.

33:54Is this the 1750? Yes, this one. Yeah, nice.

34:00Jack:This is my train. Don't know how much longer I'll be doing this for, like a melt.

34:15Look, overall good. Spurs come my other point off the back of two losses. We'll take it won't we?

34:23Jack:We'll take it.

34:27Jack:Thanks everybody for watching this. I mean it's a bit different and a bit different from the usual but it's a bit more awkward to do it in this kind of setting. I'm not fully comfortable with it if I'm brutally honest with you. So, who knows? Maybe I'll do more of a sort of full debrief tomorrow or everything. But, yeah, cheers. From the publisher

Jack shares his thoughts on Tottenham’s first point of the season at a hostile City Ground.

The scoreline doesn’t really convey what was a fairly good, tense affair. Plenty of positives for Tottenham to take from that, despite the lack of cutting edge.
