In short
Post-match reaction to Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 win at Leeds United (Elland Road), keeping Spurs unbeaten in seven. The host argues the result should be celebrated despite online “misery” takes, and pushes back on overreliance on xG narratives. He also discusses Spurs tactics/personnel and player performances, plus a few broader football commentary points.
Guests
None. It’s a solo host episode (no named co-hosts or interview guests).
Key claims
Leeds’ xG discussion is overstated; Spurs’ win matters more than predictive stats. Spurs aren’t playing “murder ball” as some critics claim, and success can be sustained. Thomas Frank’s comments about “football manager” vs “real life” are referenced.
Notable examples
Vicario’s saves but shaky kicking/awareness; Pedro Porro a “6/10” quiet game; Romero and Van de Ven strong; Archie Gray’s influence after coming on; Mathys Tell scoring; Richarlison and Brennan Johnson limited time.

0:29I recently got back from a holiday in Bilek in Turkey. It was brilliant, but I did spend it looking longingly at the golf courses in the area. In reality, if I'd taken my clubs, I probably would have come back from that family holiday single. It's a brilliant place, stunning beaches, five-star hospitality in some of the best hotels on earth. But for me, just getting out on those courses would have been the icing on the cake. Search Turkey on TripAdvisor now to book your ultimate golf holiday in the Turkish Riviera. Are all batteries the same? That's like asking if all soccer players are the same.
1:08Take Messi, the most decorated player ever. Is there any other player who has achieved that? No, just him. Now take Duracell. Is there any other battery with power boost ingredients inside? No, just Duracell. Remember, goats only trust goats because they're built different. and Messi only trusts Duracell.
1:37Right, here we are. Not immediately after the game, as I often advertise. It's one of my little... What was it? I was going to say KPIs. USPs, isn't it? I do my little thing on the whistle. Aren't I great?
1:59I've been decorating today, painting, putting up panelling, all that type of stuff. So I did have the game on in the background, but I was covered in paint and then I was knackered and I was also talking to various members of my family who were around helping doing it as well. So I couldn't jump on and do a podcast. It's also, I was decorating the room that I literally do the podcast in. so hence why this is a bit later than usual and also hence why I'm not doing I'm not doing it as a YouTube stream this time just a good old-fashioned good old-fashioned me and you having a chin wag and you know what right I do actually kind of like doing this you know I do these this isn't I promise you this isn't just uh this isn't just a uh a cheap plug but on the Patreon I do a preview which is more like this more like the old school kind of post match where there's no pressure of YouTube comments there do you know what I mean?
3:04I see them flickering away in the background people mugging me off or asking questions or saying things here there's no right to reply it's all just me, me, me me sat here blabbering on about Tottenham Hotspur against Leeds United today, which, look, I'm staggered, honestly, I'm staggered that it's been seen as anything less than an outstanding victory. Ellen Rhodes, a notoriously fiery place to go for anybody. Leeds United, obviously, having been in very good form at their home stadium for quite some time. Hadn't lost since last September.
3:59Until little old Tottenham Hotspur came to town and reversed Dr. Tottenham them, didn't we? Uno reversi on the Dr. Tottenham. I'm very happy with that. Undefeated in, what is it, seven games now? and you go online and it's all bloody but look at our xg it's not as good as leads is when i think leads is xg was blown this is the thing right people uh i'm not going to dive too much into this honestly because i don't know what i'm talking about so i'm just reacting to something i'm talking about i'm i'm doing the thing right this is why the internet is so bad this is probably why everything is so bad in society now is because we all just react to things without fully taking the time to appreciate or understand the various different nuances and the context and the sometimes technical like foundation or whatever behind certain things we just say i don't like that don't like the sound of that don't agree with this don't agree with that that looks wrong to me
5:27and so what I've heard and what I will take on board is that Leeds had a good XG because basically before they scored their goal they had two or three shots like right within the box in front of the goalkeeper right because Vecario is a pizza-wristed fraud i i do not i did i stuttered over saying that then and i'm like that that's it's pushing my luck a bit yeah that is obviously xenophobic right but i think it's i think that's punching sideways isn't it i think that's a kind of you know punching sideways thing um
6:18xg blah blah blah look i mean look we won i'm sorry let's not invent can we just we stop inventing other things to be miserable about i beg i beg right we're actually doing we've we've lost one game this season. We're third in the Premier League, right? But then we're currently sort of going toe-to-toe with Arsenal and Liverpool.
6:46You can, you can suggest that this isn't sustainable, but how many years did people say that Son Hyun Min overperforming his XG wasn't sustainable? His entire career, you know? There's absolutely nothing to say that Thomas Frank and his band of tricky lily whites won't be up in the business end of the season. Wait, hang on. Business end of the table come the end of the season. Absolutely nothing to suggest that, right? You can use your data that tells you the story to a degree of something that has passed, but it's not a predictive model, is it?
7:32so just shut up enjoy tottenham winning games like there's so much to be miserable about there's so much to be miserable about in this life that your football team winning games is something that you should be inventing some sort of umbrage against it's just it's wild to me i don't get it you know i don't get it there was a good comment put to me uh on spotify after the pod i did with john bass this week which well i was on just thursday's pod with john bass if you've not heard it yeah have a listen it's good listen it's always a good listen with john bass it's very very easy to talk to i very much enjoy talking to john bass and on there we were just basically discussing the fact that That's, I can't even remember where I was going with this.
8:27I've just started something there and I've forgotten where I was going. That's abysmal, isn't it? That's what you're thinking. He's not even 10 minutes into this and he's already tied himself in knots. He doesn't know what he's talking about. He's trying to go on about XG for a bit and that's, you know, been hackneyed to say the least. and now he's doing a plug of his John Bass pods, and can't even remember why he brought him up in the first place. No, I remember. I remember. It's back to me. So the comment was,
9:10what you're not taking on board, to me, is that Frank is playing the same sort of football that Arteta plays at Arsenal. so even if it is successful, it's always going to be horrible to watch, because Arsenal are horrible to watch, despite how good they are,
9:36I mean, I know what the MO of the club is, and all that type of thing, don't wait for the opposition to die of boredom and stuff, but I do, I've got to say, not many people were complaining, when we low-blocked our way to the Europa League last season under Ange Bosco. For all of Ange's caution to the wind, swashbuckling football, you're a liar. You're an absolute liar and a fraud if you don't acknowledge the fact that, you know, we won that Europa League in not a particularly pretty fashion. And we all still enjoyed it, didn't we? if Arsenal win the Premier League this year which is looking uncomfortably more likely disgusting but if they go and win it this year I doubt they'll really care that other people are saying well I wouldn't want to win it that way and if we go and win the Premier League from this point which you know we might we might highly unlikely but we might it's still possible I think we'd all get on board with that wouldn't we but look on a more real one I personally feel like I still just feel like it's overstated I feel like this this idea of us playing this massively negative murder ball type football I'm not really buying it I'm not really buying it I'm not I think when we continue to add more talented players into the attacking third if we get like a if we get a demon of a striker let's get Harry Kane back if we add like a Savino or somebody out to that left hand side then I think we're going to be cooking I think we're going to be

13:13Terms and conditions apply. tomorrow morning is knocking stock your fridge now how about a creamy mocha frappuccino drink or a sweet vanilla smooth caramel maybe or white chocolate mocha whichever you choose delicious coffee awaits find starbucks frappuccino drinks wherever you buy your groceries man with kudos is an exceptional player xavi siemens today in the number 10 looking way more influential looking every bit the sort of player that we wanted him to be a few again like moans and groans moans and groans about the Rabona that he tried you know stop just looking for things to be like miserable about it's great it's fun that he's trying it that's what football's supposed to be it's supposed to be fun and he had a really good performance for the most part
14:10I think he's still honestly I still think he's kind of just getting to adapting to the speed of the Premier League getting to grips with it all and it was probably the right decision to bring him off when when Frank did bring him off
14:31but it felt like he was you know much more influential over the game it felt like things were starting to starting to click a bit in that final third and i just i quite simply just i don't buy that it's like some sort of you know sit back and counter type job i thought i just thought we played well we won the game i don't this is madness this is madness to me I feel like I'm sort of sitting here after every game being like oh you know why is everyone miserable we won again maybe I shouldn't maybe I should just rise above all that you know maybe I shouldn't address maybe I shouldn't address what the masses are saying what is it a lion a lion doesn't concern himself with the opinions of sheep right it's very smart it's very smart thing isn't it maybe i'll go and stick that on a meme somewhere i'll stick that on a meme i'll stick that on i'll find i'll find a picture of a lion and i'll find the one that i like and it will be 300 pixels by 300 pixels and with my canva free trial i'll stretch that 300 by 300 lion picture across a 1920 by 1080 canvas but I won't scale it in uniform fashion I will scale it to the oblong of the 1920 by 1080 canvas so not only will I have a picture that that is you know vastly underneath the required pixel threshold hold for the image to retain any sort of quality I'm going to distort the image as well but it's going to be that line that I like now I'm going to type over the top of it a line doesn't concern himself with the opinions of sheep and I'll put like a sheep emoji on it as well and then what I'm going to do with that is when I see anything contentious in my local area or in geopolitics or anything like that, what I'll do is I'll respond with something inflammatory and then when somebody gives me a kind of well-constructed, well-reasoned retort to my sort of point, I'm just going to respond with that image.
17:19I think that would be quite a good thing to do, actually. I think I'm onto something with that. I think that would be pretty smart. just you wait just i'll probably i might cook something up i might cook up a meme for daylight savings time and stuff is going to be kicking in soon when it comes to putting the clocks back i have to think of a something something smart i can do there for putting the clocks back it'll come to me in time it will come to me we've won again Tottenham Hotspur have won again Thomas Frank what's his thing he said something about let's look at this I want to see what this quote is he said something about it not being football manager Thomas Frank football manager quote
18:25seriously
18:47I can't be asked that I think this was from the embargoed part yeah it's the embargoed part of the pre-match press conference that was just a part of them talking about Archie Gray I believe Archie Gray and all his family and stuff at the game today
19:15but he said football manager is not real life it's human beings
19:24I don't really know what he was going on with that I'd imagine it was something to do with people telling him that he had to play a certain way or do a certain thing
19:42look
19:46we can continue to go over all this sort of thing can't we rabbit the same talking points every week we're building a foundation we need to build an attack on top of it the personnel will get better right I think all of those things are true I think winning away at Ellen Road winning away in the Premier League nowadays is pretty difficult. It's full of some very, very good teams, the Premier League, if you weren't aware.
20:23Winning away is a good thing. Apparently, and I hope this is true because I said it on Twitter as well, apparently in Frank's start to the season now already in the Premier League, we've already amassed as many points as we did in the entirety of the second half of last season which is pretty wild but again I don't want to sit here every single week and compare what's happening this year to last year last year we won a Europa League and that was great you know
21:02I would like to though just be able to sort of sit after a game and just bask in Spurs having won and just enjoy that, you know and not have to have it be kind of immediately turned into a misery fest I do, like honestly man, on a real one any of you that want to keep turning it into this stuff like, I do really feel like you need to try and find a bit of joy you need to divert things somewhere like you know like if you if you really are forcing like a sort of misery agenda from spurs winning and doing well as a football team i don't know man i just just take a step back for a bit i don't know do what you want ultimately i guess but I just find it a bit bizarre I find it a bit bizarre that it has to be this way for basically everyone
22:08I think the internet's cooked us all to be honest with you I think it's done us I mean you know my entire career is internet based and everything so I shouldn't knock it too much but it does feel like it's cooked us doesn't it
22:33Spurs one good should I talk about the pliers why not let's do it

24:23It was a real sort of the full pantheon of Giuliano Vicario today, I felt. Got a bit of all of it. I do think we should be getting closer to the time where we see Kinski start to be factored into the team though. Pedro Porro
24:55dare I say a bit of a nothingy performance from him today like he wasn't particularly bad wasn't particularly good he just was kind of there and just sort of did his thing
25:11and sometimes that's alright isn't it sometimes it's alright for a player to have one of them a 6 out of 10 should we call it that Christian Romero very good Mickey Van Der Ven very good I think they they kept like they kept like trying to like dink the ball over the top
25:39it's almost like Daniel Farker forgot that we've got I think it is it the is it the he's either the fastest player in world football or he's the fastest player in the Premier League one or the other probably possibly both um
25:57playing in our back line so I mean that's you know that was never really going to be a real concern for us now Destiny a doggy this is one I really wanted to get on to um he is
26:13really looking good isn't he and it's funny is it it's funny what happens when a player is injured for a while and then comes back from injury and has a few games getting back up to speed getting their match fitness back up you suddenly start to be like oh right yeah so the past couple of years where we were all worried about them like you know maybe having been some sort of a false prophet or whatever and thinking that their early promise wasn't going to come to anything sometimes it's worth probably remembering oh yeah but they were uh they were injured and whatever um i don't know why i'm sort of speaking in that sort of third person type thing just just talk normally don't over complicate it you're talking off the cuff as it is it's 10 31 the match was hours ago hours ago nobody's nobody cares about this we're even doing this nobody's gonna listen to this are they oh you didn't record it in time he didn't record it in time i would have listened but oh yeah all the other pods came out so i didn't listen to it oh no i usually listen to i'll walk my dog afterwards but you didn't have it done in time and now what with the game being a day ago a mere day ago it's just completely out of date now because the internet has cooked all of our brains oh wait you just did a bit about that on this podcast maybe you're really smart
28:06testing the dog is really good though no he is really good physically technically all of it class absolutely class um I really do like him. I think... No, I'm not comparing him and Spence. I like the fact that we've got two really talented players who can play in the same position, who we can rotate between. And that's fine, because that's what normal clubs do. And that's what normal clubs aspire to be. Brilliant clubs do, you know? have lots of quality in basically every position on the pitch Rodrigo Bentancur signed his new contract yay an alright performance today didn't really do anything pretty Rodrigo Bentancur-y Jaupelinha I just, you know, he's brilliant isn't he?
29:14isn't he a brilliant player? I don't know
Read the full transcript
29:26again this is sort of this is another one of those like Thomas Frank and the football and how we're doing at the moment isn't it you know Gio Polini has kind of become the figurehead of we don't want this sort of thing at our club because and then projecting all these kind of things onto him without really watching his performances, which have all been good. And the mental thing to me is it does seem to be that the biggest criticism of Jaapolini is he isn't Rodri.
29:59Which, you know, fine. But also feels like a pretty harsh bar. I'm just saying, you know. Feels like that's pretty restrictive. especially of a player that has I would say quite evidently added quite a bit to this team
30:22Miami Kudos he's brilliant isn't he he's just well good it is quite mad to me that you had West Ham fans sort of feeling like celebrating when I don't know if it's maybe it's Copian maybe that's the thing right maybe it was Copium but there was some weren't there there was some like jubilant celebrations that he'd he'd signed for
30:53he'd signed for Spurs they felt like they'd I think the big tweet that was doing the rounds wasn't it that we've had we've pulled Tottenham's pants down there we've pulled their pants down for him 50 million pounds lads that's you know that's not a lot in 2025, is it? I mean, it literally is a lot of money, but you know what I'm saying, in footballing terms.
31:19He needed that goal. I think he did. He's been playing brilliantly, consistently for us, but he got quite a few assists now, four or five assists, I think, over the season.
31:37But also, you know, players love scoring goals don't they we love seeing players score goals goals are good name of the game name of the game I mean it's actually football isn't it but it could be called goals do you have a game of goals what sort of there are I'm trying to think now of sports where the cricket and wicket sounds quite similar doesn't it cricket I don't even know what's the etymology of that anyone know what's the sport called cricket is it really obvious
32:25I can't think of why
32:30I'm going to look this up now
32:35what is the
32:44of the word cricket sport.
32:54So, the word cricket originates from either the Old English crick or crike, which means crutch or staff, or the Middle Dutch cricke, stick, which was a common trade connection with the south-east of England. Some experts suggest that the name came from a Middle Dutch hockey term, met de cricke, meaning with the stick chase. Another possibility is a link to the Middle Dutch cricke stall, a low stall for kneeling, which resembled an early two-stump wicket. So it's not that straightforward, is it? And you can say, listening to this, that you've learned something new as well.
33:44Xavi Simons, yeah, I thought it was a good performance today. I've spoken about him at the top. Really like him. I'm liking seeing him further develop at Tottenham Hotspur. He's a very talented player. I am still incredibly encouraged and excited by his presence within our team. Odeberg, yep, he's fine. You know, it's good. We've got somebody sort of playing out in that position. Nice to see a bit more in product for him. But, you know, whatever. Mathis Tell, lovely. Lovely goal. Decent performance, I felt. I think he's clearly a talented player. Get off his back. it's nice to see Thomas Frank got a bit emotional talking about him after the game which was good
34:41did it take a deflection? I think it did take a his shot I think it did take a deflection but it was a good shot though anyway and I'm not going to take it away from that fella Pat Matosal decent when he came on
34:59richarlison meh big dance didn't really have enough time to do anything nor did brennan johnson um so we do have an international break now we have an international break but that mean that doesn't mean the fun is going to stop there will still be pods aplenty pods galore so maybe I'll do some stuff on Patreon I've had a few ideas down the weeks to do some sort of more video-y podcast-y things, evergreen things perhaps patreon.com slash RTR pod but I'll still be here on Mondays and Thursdays like, you know, I don't know what we'll be to talk about but we'll try and find something to talk about anyway won't we um so that'd be good yeah thanks for listening do appreciate it sorry it was a bit late sorry it's a bit manic i'm tired i've been decorating all day right i am human okay you know when you you know when you're all like saying to me don't criticize the players on here they're only human before you go and criticize me as a podcast and just remember I'm only human all right I do get tired sometimes I definitely get tired of the sound of my own voice and I record quite a few podcasts and sometimes I've just got to do stuff like decorating rooms so
36:39I don't really know what I'm on about to be honest with you I wanted to go and watch the smashing machine last night maybe I'll go tomorrow I was going to go last night but I was just too tired I was too tired I had such a busy day at work and I just wanted to all I wanted to do basically was sit in my house and eat and watch stuff on the TV that's good laugh isn't it doing that if you want to listen to more sort of rambling like this so yeah Patreon if you have enjoyed this pod and you do enjoy the pod please consider leaving a rating and a review on your podcast platform of choice leave any comments on Spotify if you use Spotify you can leave comments now it's quite an interesting development but yeah feel free to say stuff on there if you do join Patreon by the way we've got Discord so you can get involved in that
37:46much else to talk about? no I don't think there is
37:52try and cheer up a bit alright Spurs are winning games there's something so miserable about it up the Spurs come on you Spurs

From the publisher
Spurs became the first team to win at Elland road since September 2024 as they left Yorkshire the victors this afternoon. Despite another solid performance full of belief from Frank's men, there remains some skepticism from the fanbase.
Shouldn't we just get on with it and try and enjoy the fact that Spurs aren't losing loads of games at the moment?
