In short
A post-match reaction to Newcastle United 2-0 Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, with Spurs fans discussing why they’re out, what it says about squad depth, and broader project gaps between the clubs.
Guest backgrounds
No guests are named in the transcript; it’s a solo host-style episode with mentions of “Billy T” for a future pod.
Key claims
Spurs “lost fair and square” to the better side; Newcastle are “far ahead” in their project under Eddie Howe; Spurs lack quality for true rotation due to injuries and fatigue; Spurs’ transfer strategy has been inconsistent (blaming Daniel Levy in part), and new ownership hope is framed as “slamming against a tree” (renewed optimism).
Notable examples
Richarlison’s missed chance and frustration; Jed Spence’s first-half attacking work; Antonin Kinski starting over Vicario; Kevin Danso’s defensive impact; Pedro Porro’s decent performance; Newcastle’s Nick Walter Marder and Alexander Isak are praised as top-level targets Spurs would want.

1:46Why Newcastle United playing status quo at the end of matches? That's a new one, isn't it? I know Arsenal have done that in the past. They've got their Saka and Emma Smith-Rowe song. I didn't know Newcastle did that as well apparently they do Spurs are out of the caribou if you can hear a noise in the background I'm feeding a tiny human being as well it's my shift and get you a man that can do both feeding a small human being whilst creating an informative and amusing, hopefully, podcast about the fortunes, the thrills and spills of the Tottenham Hotspur experience. We're out of the Carabao Cup.
2:48Bit disappointing, obviously. Want to see Spurs in as many cup competitions as possible. I'm not livid. I've got to be honest we're in the Champions League so for a couple of reasons I'm not livid for a couple of reasons bigger picture I don't think we've got the squads to juggle all these competitions I know whatever weak mentality blah blah blah blah blah I would have loved to have seen us win the win the Carabao Cup I'd love to have seen us compete in it I want to see Spurs win as much as I can as I've said I'm a pig absolute pig for trophies after the Europa last season. So I was hoping we could do something there.
3:34But look, I don't think we got the squad to juggle loads of competitions. Look at the amount of injuries we've already got. The cumulative fatigue that will stack up on the few players that we do have left, the more competitions that we're in. You know, not ideal. I know we played a bit of a rotated side tonight, but we haven't got enough quality to do a proper rotation, do we? So that's one thing. And I'm also just not that annoyed because it was one of those games when Newcastle were just good value for their win, weren't they? I don't really want to... I'm not going to come across as too bitter and...
4:25or whatever, about a result where Spurs just lost. We lost to the better team on the day. That is what happens, generally speaking. I know this might come as a shock to many of you listening to this. And I know I am something of a pathfinder, a truth-sayer, if you like, when it comes to football and football discourse. but teams, your team in particular, especially if you're a Spurs fan, hardy har har, doesn't always win. Sometimes the opposition team will win and Newcastle are quite a good team, really. Playing away at St James' Park, you know, not an ideal fixture, is it, really? I think many of us rolled our eyes when that one got drawn out the hat.
5:18It's not been a happy hunting ground for us for the past few years. and I thought we gave a fairly decent account of ourselves. I thought there were some nice little passages of play here and there, mainly in the first half. I think we faded a bit in the second half, but there were a few nice little moves. I think Richarlison was probably, he did frustrate me a bit with some of his moaning, but I think he was quite unlucky. I think he was quite unlucky. There's the opportunity, obviously, that was flashed across the front of goal. which he didn't get on the end of. And, you know, I can imagine people are not too happy with him about, but it was a difficult one, wasn't it?
6:07It's what it is, isn't it? Like, I think one of my more controversial takes, and I was saying this to the lads on WhatsApp.
6:19I didn't know if I was going to talk about it on here because, you know, whatever. It's one of those things, isn't it? You don't want to sort of like kick the hornet's nest and stuff. But I think what tonight brought into focus for me is that Newcastle are just quite far ahead of us right now. Obviously much further ahead in terms of their project. You know, they've been playing under Howe and the guy that looks like an underpants model. I always forget what his name is. The smiley guy that always, you know, photo bombs every opportunity he can get. Irritating dude on the sidelines. When I say underpants model, it's like, you know, old like 90, anyone that was sort of around at that point, the old 90s catalogs, like Littlewood's catalog and Argos catalog and stuff.
7:15You'd always have a very like generic set of different models and stuff. and he sort of has that vibe about him British home stores BHS there's a throwback I mean that didn't really exist for that long even while I was alive but here we are talking about old things remember that thing Snickers used to be called marathon bars oh Starburst used to be called Opal Throats oh isn't that interesting things change it's so like it's so tedious that stuff but I get sucked into it as much as everybody else does but it's one of those it's just it's one of those things isn't it where whenever you hear that stuff from you hear stuff from people who are a bit older than you telling you about things you didn't so the marathon example I don't ever remember a snickers being called a marathon but like people tell you that stuff and it's just like yeah cool nice one and yet you expect it to be really interesting when you pass that torch down to another generation oh you know Manchester United used to be really really I always say this now and it's so bizarre like anyone in their 20s now any work colleagues or anything that I've got are in their 20s just don't remember Man United being a really good side and so when I'm saying like yeah well it's you know it was quite big for us to win the Europa League because I remember Man United being really good and they're like yeah but they haven't been good for like a long time anyway you know that's a footballing example I'm just talking more about it's Tony Tony Soprano said it didn't he Tony Soprano said it remember when is the lowest form of conversation and it is in it it is to a degree isn't it we've seen uh Inside Out or Inside Out 2 I should say more pertinently they have a good little riff on that Inside Out is a brilliant film if you're sceptical about it if you don't like children's films as people say you've been disingenuous for a start everybody knows Pixar makes films that are going to appeal to a broad spectrum of people but the Inside Out films are very good, very poignant it's something that you can reflect on with your own kids and you can reflect on them with your own self as you grow and age and all that type of stuff why am I talking about inside out inside out too I'm supposed to be talking about Newcastle Spurs lost all right Spurs lost um the point I wanted to make is Newcastle are just a bit further along than us really you know they're further along in their journey they have a bigger squad they have a better squads I think they've got more technically sound players I think the majority of their players are big brutes big physical bruising imposing players I think there's a lot of overlap really with Newcastle squad and Arsenal's I think Arsenal Arteta would love to have quite a few of Newcastle's players to be honest they definitely make a home for them and we're just not quite there I'm pretty sure that's what Thomas Frank wants to build that's the type of squad and that's the type of probably football he wants us to be playing I've sort of said before on pods and things that I find Newcastle's football quite hard to quite hard to pin down really what it is that they do what it is that they're about
11:01and I think for me I reckon there probably are similarities between us and Newcastle the football Frank wants us to play and the football that Howe and the underpants model has them playing
11:16that's how I got into nostalgia stuff I was talking about catalogs and what yeah right I remember now I think there's similarities there but Newcastle just have you know they've been building towards that end for a longer time we've had different managers wanting to play different types of football we've had a disjointed approach to transfers because of let's blame Daniel Levy let's let's do that right we can speculate all we want about all the other reasons why whether or not Enoch are gonna change tack or they say they're going to let's for now take that on face value all right our approach to transfers has been poor it's been lacking because of daniel levy let's blame him um and what with our new ownership well it's not a new ownership though is it i'm falling for it i'm a simp absolutely just i've just walked into it i'm like okay okay yeah new owners nice like they haven't been the same people have been in charge the past 20 years.
12:23Just listen to yourself. The world's biggest soccer tournament has arrived and you can trade the entire tournament on Kalshi. 13:27It's pathetic. It's pathetic. Any, that's a pathetic thing about human beings. About us. And I'm directing this at you as well. You listening. This isn't just me. I'm self-effacing enough on here, right? But you are just as bad as I am because we all are. We're all fallible, right? We're all fallible. We're pathetic creatures. We have these airs and graces. We dress everything up and we wear these masks that I care about this or I care about that. We're simple beings. We're simple beings. That apple is at the top of the tree. I'm going to keep hitting the tree until the apple falls down and then the apple's in front of me and I'm happy because I'm munching it.
14:12And sometimes the apple's a bit funky, isn't it? Sometimes the apple's fermented and then our brains develop and change and we find ourselves no longer looking at apples in trees. We find ourselves talking into podcasts, talking into laptops at 22.31 on a Wednesday evening as my infant child nestles on my lap. But that's what it is, those fermented apples. it changed those ape brains didn't it changed those ape brains to a degree it opened up the scope of what was possible what was imaginable however however underneath all of that underneath all of those layers that have been built by that by the fungus I got fungus I don't know why I said that like I do know why I said that like so I was gonna say fungi um or fungi apparently it's fungi apparently you're supposed to say fungi I'm just saying alright I laughed I saw a documentary once called Fabulous Fungi and the guy kept pronouncing it fungi and I found it quite funny oh look at the way Americans say that but apparently you are supposed to say fungi not fungi the hell did I get onto that this is so I've not done a stream as well because like I say I'm looking after the ween and and also I'm getting these like weird there's been some weird little power cuts in my area where the power goes out for literally like a second at a time it's happened two or three times this evening already I don't even think it goes out for a second it goes out for like half a second but it's just annoying because if I'm in the middle of a stream then the internet goes the router turns off I have to go load back I mean just I can't be there's too many plates there's too many plates to spin right now um what was it about eight brains and what was it about you and me I can't remember I've lost that chain of thought um but
16:29Newcastle are just a bit better than us I was talking about Enoch wasn't I and their intentions and all that type of thing yeah we're simple beings and I want to believe I want to believe I want the apple at the top of the tree to be Tottenham being a successful and a brilliant team right and so me banging against the tree is this renewed hope that with Levy gone with the Lewis family saying that they are going to change the way that Spurs operate that they are going to be more aggressive in the transfer market all that type of thing that's just all that's all just slamming against a tree in it hoping for that hoping for that uh apple to fall out I know I'm really stretching this metaphor um I was going to adding a beehive at one point I was going to say but you know sometimes a beehive will fall out and but I feel like it's getting a bit tired um the metaphor but yeah I've not done a stream and the point is I was I was also going to add on to this is that when I don't do a stream I don't really have the structure of the comments the the the Q &A side of things that's sort of developed over the past couple of years of me doing this unlike when I first started doing it where it was just me doing more of this type of thing and I think it's often a bit of a system shock for people who have joined the party if you like more recently who are more used to the structure of me having more of a Q &A and all this tough thing what's this rambling nonsense he's going on about but you know what it is what it is get with it get with it
18:20what did I think of Spurs tonight I thought we were generally positive I thought we played pretty well
18:28we just lost to the better team didn't we that's the thing it's going to take some time it's going to take some time for us to catch up with teams like Newcastle who have been, you know, they've been playing well for the past few years. It was, you know, it was just that, that to me was just an uneventful game. That was a fairly uneventful game where it was a decently contested game of football in which the better team won. At the end of the day, the better team won. And that better team was Newcastle United.
19:02that Walter Marder is a hell of a player a hell of a player to be fair to him Flav's been going on about him for a good few years I mean to be honest James Olcott's probably told him about him or something hasn't he I love Flav but when he tries to do the tactics stuff I'm always like who are you kidding mate just stick to doing the funny stuff and the, you know, those bits. Look, I say it about myself, you know. I say it about myself when I try and do those, like, weak attempts at tactical analysis and stuff. But he's, yeah, he's been going on about Nick Walter Marder for quite some time. And he is, he's a wonderful player.
19:53I know he's, like, struggled since going to, since going to Liverpool I dare say he'll come good he is a very very good player he's a very talented footballer Alexander Isaac so I'm not really jumping into these sort of comparisons between the two players who's better have actually Newcastle got a better player in Walter Marder now I don't know I think they're quite different types of players but all I do know is that I would kill for either of them at Tottenham. And that's just a very, you know, it's a very good bit of business, isn't that? To lose your best player, really, in ESAC and immediately replace them with another best player.
20:46That's doing proper business, isn't it? And it's something that Spurs have not done very well for a few years now, quite a few years. look, we've let Sonny fade out. We've lost Harry Kane. You know, we've spent a bit of money. We've brought in Solanke. We've brought in Richarlison. But without trying to like, especially Solanke, I'm not trying to disrespect him, but it's not a statement signing, is it? It's a parity signing. Tottenham Hotspur signing Dominic Solanke is Tottenham Hotspur adding one of the better players in the Premier League that plays for a team below Spurs in the pecking order who probably isn't quite good enough for anybody who's above Spurs.
21:32He's a good squad player, a very good squad player. I think he's a good talent. But he doesn't take Spurs on a level, you know? We've not been very good at making those type of signings for a while, I think. Xavi Siemens is hopefully the start of things you know, more of that please
22:00but you know, it was a it was a mixed showing from him tonight, wasn't it? and it's been a fairly mixed showing from from the very beginning from his, you know from his Spurs career, right? but look
22:16Are all batteries the same? That's like asking if all soccer players are the same. Take Messi, the most decorated player ever. Is there any other player who has achieved that? No, just him. Now take Duracell. Is there any other battery with Power Boost ingredients inside? No, just Duracell. Remember, goats only trust goats because they're built different. And Messi only trusts Duracell. Tomorrow morning is knocking. stock your fridge now how about a creamy mocha frappuccino drink or a sweet vanilla smooth caramel maybe or white chocolate mocha whichever you choose delicious coffee awaits find starbucks frappuccino drinks wherever you buy your groceries we've seen enough positives from him i think i would like to see a bit more but you know he's he's all the things i always say he's a young he's a young player adapting to a new country a new team all that type of stuff um I'll do the players I think this is going to be fairly quick and I think this is going to be a fairly quick pod because you know I don't I don't really want to labour it I think I've sort of made it quite clear that I feel that it was an all right performance Spurs were beaten by the better team and I'm not gonna you know I'm not gonna lose any sleep I was gonna say I'm not gonna lose much sleep about it.
23:42I'm not going to lose any sleep over that one, if I'm just totally honest with you. So, Antonin Kinski, he got the nod over Vicario. Fine, yeah. He's got to play some games, doesn't he? He has to play some games at some point. I think for all the clamouring for him to play, we probably saw tonight why he hasn't been playing much. it's probably quite harsh but he was not very good for Newcastle second he was okay other than that but
24:25it's an interesting one if the Sammy Mockbell what he says is true that he's not been impressing lately then you know I wouldn't be overly surprised Jed Spence I thought I thought he had a really good first half, Jed Spence was one of our more positive players in an attacking sense, really. He kept sort of like breaking, breaking through Newcastle's press. He was transitioning the ball up the pitch. He was always looking to be that link man, playing the overlap. nearly created a couple of really good opportunities for Spurs and nothing really came of it. A good performance, you know. It's sort of become one of those things now, hasn't it, to dig out Jed Spence because we're all sort of remembering just how good Destiny a doggy is.
25:25But I think we can still appreciate and enjoy Jed Spence because he's a really talented and exciting player. so yeah good performance tonight big Kevin Danso yeah he's really good isn't he he's a really good player not as good as Romero but a really good player and I think that's fine you know he's we are gradually improving the squad when we add players like him into the fold when you add a player like Danso into the team who yeah if you're playing two at the back it's van der Ven and Romero isn't it but that feels harsh on Danso and that to me is that's good squad building when you start feeling like it's harsh to leave out certain players that's the place that you want to be in we we need to we need to embrace that level of discomfort um I think there's there's been a propensity with Spurs fans it's not like this has a bearing on like the squad building at all but there's been a propensity with Spurs fans to kind of say oh well we don't need to add another player there because we've already got a couple of really good players in that position but then often the drop off in quality from our preferred 11 if you like to the backup option is is quite vast I want to see I want I want to have more discomfort in the team I want to be more uncomfortable, right?
26:57That's what I want. I want Spurs to be more uncomfortable. I want to have more of my bum squeaking because I'm worried about that really talented player being sat on the bench and being annoyed. That's what I want, you know? That's what Man City have. That's what Liverpool have. That's what Arsenal have. Can I call the players Arsenal have in defence? Call the defenders. they bought that Hincapie or whatever he's called. He ain't getting a look in at all. He spent about£50 million on him. It's mental. A bit more of that though. Pedro Porro, decent performance tonight, I thought. I bottled it a bit when Dan Lowe was digging him out on the pod the other day.
27:49I've told you before, I've told you on here and I've held my hands up to the fact that I'm a weasel. I thought Poro was good I still think he's been one of our better players this season and I thought he was decent tonight I thought it was a good performance from him so you know let's have it oh I have a hello you alright there
28:17I have a stirring a stirring baby
28:24is she gonna go back to sleep it's good to know that my podcasts can put her to sleep um
28:35and it's also
28:40i don't know i was good i was gonna say something really dark then but yeah i'll say it now because i don't want people to to speculate i was sort of thinking if something ever happened to me she'd have an archive of footage to see of me me on either YouTube or here just blithering on about Tottenham Hotspur what a legacy there was my father he was losing his ass over Tottenham Hotspur losing a football match to Aston Villa um it's quite weird isn't it Stuart Lee it reminds me of Stuart Lee once saying um that the thing about dying is that you ultimately just leave a mess for somebody else to clear up he was reflecting on I think it was when his father passed away he just had loads and loads of old records or something like that I think he was he was keeping as like oh these will be worth something one day or you know somebody can inherit them and you know it's just all worthless crap um so yeah but that's that's what that's what she'll get she'll get a nice digital archive of me waffling on whatever waffling on about spurs um pat matassar love him decent enough performance let's see more of that let's see more of him played i actually quite Do you know what I've got to say?
30:10That's a midfield I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of. Bergvot, Saar. And I'd rather have Pelinha there instead of Ben Tanker. But obviously, what with the defensive woes, if you like, Pelinha was playing in that sort of strange centre-backy defensive role. So remember, we had Ben Tanker in the middle. And I thought they all played all right. I thought it was a decent enough performance. I sort of I realised I glossed over I glossed over Polina there
30:48fine I think everyone was fine around there I I think that midfield did work quite well and I think Spurs were trying to create stuff and we were pretty successful on a on a few occasions I mean you can't recall it was successful if we actually created any goals or scored any goals, but you know what I mean? I think we played all right.
31:11Xavi Siemens, as I've said, I'd like to see a bit more from him. That is what it is. I do think Brennan Johnson was particularly bad this evening, if I'm brutally honest.
31:28I almost feel like he's regressing. if again if I'm if I am if you allow me this space to be even more brutally honest I'm not not overly keen to see him playing for Spurs right now yeah you know
31:52Richarlison not you know all right an okay position led the line all right but did frustrate me quite a bit with a lot of his moaning in the first you know after the whole jed spence tying his laces before newcastle scored their first and everything um just sort of shut up and get on with it a bit i felt like the his teammates were yeah but poro was captain tonight wasn't he i think i could even sense that poro was just trying to get him to shut up and get his head back in the game a bit um so yeah um who came on tell came on yeah not really much to report there Kudis came on was okay Kalamuani was okay as well Spurs are out of the Carabao Cup we're not on our way to Wembley well we might be if we do alright in the FA Cup but for now Spurs are not on their way to Wembley
