In short

Post-match reaction to Tottenham Hotspur’s 0-0 draw with Everton at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, focusing on Spurs’ inability to score despite controlling games, plus broader concerns about squad building, injuries, and Roberto De Zerbi’s system.

Guest backgrounds

No guests are present; it’s a solo host episode (Ted Trunk / “Rule the Roost” style).

Key claims

Spurs dominated midfield and were defensively solid, but created few “guilt-edged” chances. The host argues Spurs lack a true creative “killer” midfielder/number 10 and that injuries (James Maddison, Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski) and fitness issues (e.g., Kudus, Archie Gray’s role) are stalling chances. He criticizes not replacing Jed Spence adequately and questions Solanke’s “killer instinct.” He worries Spurs are unprepared for the post-Covid Premier League and that neglect under Daniel Levy has “caught up.”

Notable examples

Brennan Johnson skied over; Kinski flap leading to Dewsbury-Hall failing to capitalize; Everton’s key moments were limited; Spurs’ possession without finishing is compared to prior matches. Next: Liverpool on Tuesday.

1:26Let's go.

1:57Jack:Hello everyone, welcome back to Rule the Ridge podcast. It's been a while, it feels like it's been ages since I've done one of these, like properly, like now, so bear with me, do you know what I mean? If I'm a bit rusty, bear with me, have a bit of grace, have a bit of patience with me, alright? Like we're affording Tottenham Hotspur Football Club right now. How have you all been? I've been a bit poorly, and then I've been catching buses I did do my little uh I did do a thing I recorded a sort of selfie video after the forest game um I felt a bit awkward I felt a bit awkward walking through the streets doing it do you know I mean holding it up and doing the how are you a youtuber type thing do you know I mean like it's a bit it's a bit melty in it like look you know no disrespect to anyone that sort of likes doing that type of thing but I didn't feel overly comfortable doing it but I I gave it my best shot.

2:54Jack:But here we are. Tottenham, again, failed to score a goal. They said on the commentary that is the first goalless draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. I'm guessing by that they mean in the Premier League, but maybe not. I don't know.

3:19Jack:It's a funny one. It's a funny one. and let me let me let me sort of quantify this right there's there's a conflict going on for me right now in my head where and don't turn it off don't say i'm moaning don't do you know i mean i'm getting a lot of that lately i'm getting a lot of you made a point that i didn't agree with so i turned it off like come on is that is that is that where we're at now is that the state of things in 2026 the like the most minor nuanced disagreement on a position it means turn it off don't turn it off just don't listen just leave it strip give me the give me the watch time all right give me that give me that at least there's a struggle there's a tussle going on in my head right now right on one side i can watch a game like that today as i did against forest and that was a bit different because i was there i was at the away ground there's there's a sort of I don't know I was lost in it I was in an old box stadium I've always wanted to go to the city ground I was sort of you know happy I'd just done my little like bus challenge thing right and so I watched the game last week and I was kind of like this is all right we've done all right away from home we're playing against a team that hates us most teams in the Premier League do but Forest in particular the whole Maranakis thing they don't really like us it's a leery ground and we we played well there and equally i kind of look at today and i think we controlled the game pretty much there's a spell in the sort of what should we say from about 65 to about 75 minutes when everton were on top they haven't much the lion's share of the possession but they didn't do an awful lot that was too meaningful uh i think that the main opportunity that stands out for me is the one that Brennan Johnson skied over the bar, which was a well-worked opportunity for them.

5:18Jack:And Johnson probably should have scored or at least got it on target. But other than that, there's that little sort of flap from Kinski a bit earlier on that Dewsbury Hall didn't really manage to capitalize upon. But for the most part, Spurs were very comfortable. I can look at that as a team that is still a work in progress. these players are trying to sort of learn how one another play um they're trying to sort of learn Deserby's system and that is going to take some time but again there were encouraging signs from today I think Spurs look composed in a lot of what they were doing I think defensively they were very solid um I think we controlled but I would say dominated the midfield for the most part again we just had trouble creating those guilt-edged opportunities now that now that's my rational very you know that very one side of me the other side is when the hell are we going to score another goal you know like the other side of me is why the hell did we sell jed spence not replace him and are playing archie gray as a right back i love archie gray you know that you You know, I've spoken about Archie Gray a lot on here before.

6:36Jack:I've spoken about my fondness for Archie Gray, right? He is not a right back in this type of system. Maybe in any type of system, I don't know. But definitely not in the way that Roberto Dezerbi wants us to play. The overlap, the partnership with Savio was just not working. Savio was getting frustrated. It's no good for Gray and it's no good for us. It's absolutely not. to me it's borderline inexcusable that we would let look i'm not getting hung up on jed spence jed spence had a great opportunity to go to intermelan he didn't want to play second fiddle to udoggi robertson and pedro porro so what fourth fiddle right he had a good opportunity to go to intermelan fine i can get over that what i can't get over is spurs not prioritizing adequate backup for that position.

7:31Jack:That's the first kind of thing I'm quite frustrated about. Another thing I'm quite frustrated about from today, right, is we know James Madison's getting on a bit. We know James Madison's had a succession of serious and significant injuries, right? We know that Xavi Seamans is going to be out for the best part of this season, perhaps the majority of this season. right there was some optimistic talk that he was going to be back maybe after christmas or something and as far as i'm aware roberto deserve he pretty much stamped that out and was like end of february at the earliest i think correct me if i'm wrong i'm sure you will but i'm pretty sure he said in one of his presses it will be end of february at the very earliest and that's that's a player coming back to training right that's a player coming back to even being in contention to be sat on the bench we're not talking about a player who is going to be completely match fit and ready to go chances are that's going to be next season right we also have Dejan Kulusevsky who I don't I hate to speculate but I guess I'm going to do that who the longer this goes on right the longer this goes on I just I cannot escape the thing and I'll be I will be delighted if I'm proven otherwise, right?

8:58Jack:I cannot escape the feeling, is finished as a player. He's been out for so long. We get these vague assurances that he's kind of in training. He's maybe going to be back at this point. You know, like, he wasn't even on the bench today. De Zerbe said he hasn't even been training with the team this week. It's just, it's a situation that you can't you can't allow to go on in this fashion so the point again i'm making is to not prioritize that creative number 10 that creative presence within our midfield right fernandez is kind of that and deserve he's spoken about him maybe being a number 10 or whatever you know fernandez to me looks and feels like pretty much like a classic number eight right he feels like the type of player that has has some creative pedigree can knock the ball about can be you know strong in the tackle and press and harry and do all that type of stuff but he doesn't seem to have that magic killer final ball right and that's that's not criticism of Fernandes it's just not the type of player that he is Tonali for all the talk that there's been about Tonali when we signed him about the fact he can't pass about the fact he can't create actually whipped in a couple of really really promising balls today was perhaps our most creative outlet um there in the midfield but I'm not going to sit here and say he's a true creator we don't have somebody in that mold deserve he continues to say like say fernandez can play in that number 10 role can he you know he says kudis can play in that number 10 role again a question can he and i really like kudis i think he's a wonderful player and i say the same thing of when people say kudis can maybe double up as a striker as well i ask kudis i don't really think so.

11:09Jack:Kudus is a very talented winger for me. I think he's a very talented player, but again, a player that's clearly not fully fit either. So Spurs have spent a lot of money this summer. And I think like myself and many of us got quite excited about that. We kind of thought this is going to signal Spurs perhaps being a serious outfit. Before the season even kicks off, soccer fans are already making predictions. Who wins the league? Who qualifies for Europe and who's lifting the trophy at season's end? On Calci, America's number one prediction market platform, you're trading against peers in a live market, meaning there's no house.

12:12Jack:But then again, it's kind of like, actually, is that money spent more like money that's going to turn us, and this is a point I'm stolen from Dan Kilpatrick, who sat in the chair, in the rule of the roost chair and covered while I was sick. Is the money spent actually really more about turning Tottenham into a half-decent Premier League team again? a team that fingers crossed won't be finishing 17th again is it going to take another wave of investment on top of that to make Spurs a very top team again but I'm not right now if I'm brutally honest I'm not lamenting Tottenham not being a top team anymore I've kind of you know I've shuffled my expectations if you like right now I want to see Tottenham win some games I want I want to see Tottenham score some goals.

13:06I want to see Tottenham not look like a load of strangers again.

13:11Jack:I don't want to go into every single game thinking, what team are going to show up today? How are we going to play today? I just want to have a more solid understanding of who we are, what we're about and what we're capable of. Because right now, if I'm brutally honest, I still kind of look at us and think, are we actually good or are we going to be in trouble again and that's kind of look you know i was sort of i was going on about i had james more on the pod the other day and i was going on about like the madrick transfer on there and that has seemingly wound a few people up but i will quantify my position on that again um because i feel like it needs to be said again there's only so often we can say that particular move or that kind of potentially silly or contentious thing that spurs have done doesn't really matter it's not that deep and then see spurs go on and have abject performances abject games again you know

14:21Jack:was that was was getting that mudrick deal across the line that important was even signing and die that important really because i again like there's this misconception that like i'm annoyed about mudrick and all this type of thing because of and die really when we were linked with him i wasn't that bothered either i didn't really see it as something that we needed to be doing i saw some of these other positions i've mentioned already as something that are more pressing for spurs fullback cover more creative outlets in the midfield perhaps a lump up top you know could we have had an 11th hour kind of bid for somebody like mateta who i've criticized a lot in the past but when you look at kind of football you look at the premier league right now you kind I think well is he that sort of an you know perhaps this is a bit disrespectful to him but that blunt instrument that maybe we need but look you know see this is kind of this is tipping too much the other way because at the same time I still I stand by the point I was making at the top in that I do continue to see an improvement in what it is that Spurs are doing I do continue to see that spurs have some type of idea i guess that we have players who are of enough quality to control games quite convincingly i think i think the forest game and i think the everton game today we were quite clearly the team in control for the most part and on all teams all teams are susceptible right like you can't control a game for 90 minutes there's always going to be opportunities that the opposition create you know they manage to hit you on the counter or sneak something through the cracks if you like and that happened a couple of times overton i guess the main the main sort of worry is and this was i think it was about genuinely i think it was like 56 minutes into the game, right?

16:35Jack:I sat there with Charlotte watching it and she was just like, I just don't see where we get a goal from. I don't see where a goal comes from. And I was like, yeah, I agree. If Everton score now, if Everton even score now in like the 55th, 56th minute, they will win the game. I'm fairly confident of that. and that's that's that's quite a worrying place to be in it's quite worrying and this this i guess this is kind of like the feeling that i'm having this is the kind of the the negative side of my feeling towards this spurs thing right now is that i don't have much confidence in them and i don't think they have an awful lot of confidence in themselves and it just it's bothersome that this has continued even though there's been wholesale changes at the at the club right again it just kind of raises those questions like what is it like behind the scenes there you know what is it like behind the scenes there how how does this how does this keep happening how is this like snowballing still into this season um and i think i do have some like i do have some bigger and more wobble-headed takes about all of this type of thing but they're not really founded in like firm reality that it's perhaps my head getting away with me a bit and so I don't really want to sort of share them here right now straight after a game because I don't want them to be misinterpreted by people and also I'm just not sure I want to like put that out into the ether right now but as a top line as a very top line I just have a nagging concern that the neglect that was done to the first team under the stewardship of Daniel Levy for many years has really caught up with us now and perhaps you know to a certain degree there's irrevocable damage that has been done but I'm going on I'm going on too much now I just feel like the main sort of theme of it is I think we've gone through a significant period of change in the Premier League I think a lot of the old narratives a lot of the accepted truths of the Premier League about the sort of hierarchical nature of it who exists where within that hierarchy and everything post-Covid has changed before our very eyes and we're kind of there now we're kind of there in the new world and i don't think spurs are being fully prepared for that i don't think spurs are being properly prepared for that um i think we maybe coasted on our name for a bit too long um coasted on kane and son for far too long and i just worry it's caught up with is a bit and i sort of said i'm not going to go into this stuff and i realize i kind of am right now but i'm not i'm not saying this chest out right now this is more just something that's swimming around in the back of my head somewhere and i could i could probably go on more and deeper and it could be even more wobble-headed than this but i'm not that's where i'm going to sort of draw the line but it's just because i don't want to be cryptic about it i don't want to be like oh I've got these sort of feelings but I'm not I'm not going to talk about it's like the old Facebook statuses do you remember that like for anyone sort of my sort of age sort of dustier millennials right there would always be sort of people would either change like their MSN name or like they do a Facebook status that would be like it would be like your name is Jack is and you'd be like just do you know what I mean and people would say underneath you okay what's up don't want to talk about it you know it's that it's that comes from that sort of place doesn't it i've got these big feelings about spurs but i'm not going to talk about it it's the chris tarrant check knit um yeah you know but i've given you sort of a taster of it and uh you know it's just it's kind of a bit of a worry but there were things to like about today Savio is I think improving um I think he's very good already I think yeah I think he's very exciting I think he causes problems for the opposition um I think if we did have like a Mateta or somebody in the middle getting on the end of some of the stuff that he's doing then you know we'd perhaps be sitting here sort of talking about even more profoundly about the the impact that savio has had on the team since he's come here um i think tonali despite i think he kind of you know it's weird i think he kind of bottled it against newcastle if i'm honest i sort of felt like he was unfit and i think that's sort of true but i also think he just i don't know i just think he kind of bottled it against newcastle a bit maybe it was a weird sort of feeling playing against his old team i think he does have a level of like affection for newcastle and stuff i don't think you know maybe there's a level of guilt about leaving them or something i don't know but maybe he just had a weird sort of conflicted feeling when during that game but i don't think he was very good in that match um but from that point forest i think he was great i think today he was really really solid um i thought fernandez was okay today um i'm not gonna say i was disappointed in him but i i would maybe say i think he's capable of a lot more than he showed today but he was still he was still pretty good um mamouche was largely ineffective i thought um bit of a quiet game for him solanke He, you know, I just, I think my main issue with Solanke really is that I just don't think he's very good, really, like ultimately.

23:15Jack:But to sort of quantify that further, I guess, he just doesn't seem to have that real sort of killer instinct, I don't think. like I think his positioning's pretty whack a lot of the time like he's just kind of he's never really there he's never really making himself available he's not really much of a nuisance it's just a bit of a weird one I just I thought I just find it quite strange of him really because I do think he's a talented player I just it just doesn't seem to just doesn't seem to work for him at Spurs um I just don't I just don't I don't really get it um Robertson was all right I think he I think he was okay um as somebody that like you know like I know a lot of people were quite disappointed with the Robertson deal um I was somebody that sort of saw it as like yeah that's quite good i think you know i'm quite happy with him i do definitely feel

24:22Jack:we're yeah we're not we're not as good without a doggy um i think a doggy now is overall a superior player i think robertson's delivery is still brilliant

24:38Jack:but you can see he's getting on a bit you know like you can and i think we all sort of knew that um i don't i don't think i think he was good i think he was fine today by all means but i just think we always look more dangerous when when a doggy plays and it's just a shame that a player who is as young as a doggy just can't cannot stay fit he just can't stay fit um um yeah it's a crying shame it really is because he's such a talent but again he's just one of those players that like in my back of my head i'm just like it just can't you just can't rely upon him you just can't um and look you know if that winds people up look fair enough but i'm just saying the way i feel about it you know and it's a shame because i just he's he's a he's just a wonderful wonderful player um but he's half a player for top of them you know if that so that's always gonna be a problem for us you know having sort of players that are in and out of the team and that's you know that's a that's a fair sort of wedge of our squad isn't it really players who are in and out not always available it's just it's hard to keep that continuity it's hard to really you know and i'm sort of saying at the top that we need a bit more time to gel everybody needs a bit more time to blah blah blah blah blah you know you're just kind of like well it's hard to do that when you don't have a team you don't have a squad that is always available and always capable of playing um yeah but you know i don't i don't want to sound too downbeat about this i don't um we got liverpool in what tuesday i think it's liverpool game is on tuesday i kind of feel like we might nick something there um again like i said i was talking to James about this in the pod on Thursday we were both sort of saying like you know Liverpool will they be prioritizing the League Cup their squad isn't quite as deep as it used to be if Spurs take it seriously you know we might be able to go and nick something up at Anfield so you know that's that's that's you know something um we're gonna need to be able to score a goal you know that that's that's also something right um but i do sort of

27:25i do feel like that will come i just kind of the thing i don't want to have happen

27:31Jack:what i want spurs to do right i want us to score a goal by just creating a goal properly you know i mean i want us to score in any way but what i'm saying is in an ideal world i want us to score a boring goal where a midfielder where you know we play out from the back kinski offloads to a defender a defender passes it through to the midfield they carry it forwards get it out to the wing winger whips it into the box and slanky or marmouche gets on the end of it tucks it home and spurs have built a goal we made a goal happen i think probably one of the one of the sort of in a in a strange way i'm sort of saying this look any goal is good and any goal matters right but there's that part of me that's like imagine if today we'd managed to score a goal because van der ven had done one of his runs or something like that we'd scored a goal and got the points and yeah you know three points would be great and i wouldn't be sort of you know wagging my fist into the air about that type of thing right but there would also be that bit of me that's like well we got off the hook there you know we haven't we haven't really addressed any of our problems we haven't like made a goal happen what we've done there is get lucky um and maybe that's what we need maybe that's just what we need to sort of break our duck if you like but i'd rather we sort of just broke it by like i say just scoring a pretty textbook boring team goal versus something speculative from an individual because i feel like the team needs that sense of right that's how you do it that's how you do it knock the ball about get in a mixer get on the end of it um because right now we just we don't even look like we're capable of doing that and it's funny to be that in control of a game like we were today really to have i'd say over the course of the 90 minutes the lion's share possession and not really do anything with it everton are everton are a decent side right forrest just went and won at villa today forrest are a decent side as well everton are a decent side and we've made both of those sides look kind of average right so that that speaks well for tottenham but we're not doing that really important part which is scoring goals and as long as you don't score goals you're always going to be susceptible you're always going to end up dropping points losing games because somebody gets a scrappy goal in response right and that's the sort that's kind of what happened with newcastle to a degree they got their first goal heads dropped and then they got another one um Brentford was just they outplayed us Brentford were really good um they were sort of miles ahead of us in their team's journey and everything like that but we don't need to revisit that really um I'm just sort of trying to make the point that like you know Spurs I do think are all right but you can only be so all right when it looks like the art of scoring goals is kind of a million miles away it's just really strange to be saying that it's really strange to be sat here after a summer of spending whatever it was 350 million pounds or something and just looking like we're so incapable of scoring goals it's kind of strange

31:12Jack:um let's see what some let's see what people have got to say pirate dread roberts says are we in trouble lads starting to feel like we're in trouble we're so devoid of ideas in the final third i i'll reserve judgment on that for now pirate um it is difficult it's difficult to say isn't it it's difficult to really know if we're in like trouble does trouble mean like last year i'd like to think not but you know who really knows um

32:01yeah

32:04Jack:this you know let's not rush or anything right now you know um oh here we go patrick longson says we're not in trouble we've got good defense we're clearly hard to beat just a total lack of confidence going forwards we're forcing everything there's no connection bereft of ideas the set piece threat has gone since last season i mean the set piece threat has gone because we don't have any players who are good in the air quite frankly you know that's it we're a pretty small team um we're a team that is capable of playing the ball about across the ground but yeah we're not we're not winning many aerial duels like our biggest lad mickey van de ven ain't winning aerial duels um van hecker doesn't even really um so you know it's kind of important right benedict fox says i'm not sure where the goals come from it's so unnatural once i reach the business end yeah i think like you know mamouche once he maybe gets up to speed a bit will hopefully sort of start bagging a few um we know solanke is capable of bagging a few It just, it kind of makes this whole, it makes the whole Richarlison situation quite bizarre, doesn't it?

33:38Jack:It, yeah, I don't know.

33:51Jack:Bilagi says it's not looking good, Brev.

33:56Jack:Ares 7000X says please just score a goal. Hu Giustino says was Mamouche injured? I don't know.

34:11Jack:Jack Underhill also says thought we looked really good in the first 30 minutes, then just lost a bit of drive. we look solid defensively but we've got to start scoring and stop overplaying yeah pretorian dwarf says hi jack here we go here we go this is what we like let's spice up this saturday evening um hi jack we're going down i remember ramos's two points from eight games and this is the same as that no red nap to save us this time though

34:44Jack:maybe a certain argentinian who's been talking about us again don't know just saying saying no look i get in trouble don't know when i when i talk about that as well so i'm not gonna do it i talk about what i want on my podcast all right um aiden one way aiden 100x says salut jack pour moi i feel that i've been watching spurs not be able to take a shot against a low block for the last 10 years any manager any team yeah i mean that's that's kind of part of it i do think savio is going to be pretty key to unlocking that type of thing fingers crossed um so yeah let's just let's wait and see you know on that one we'll see um jack underhill also says i'm happy bentonco is now identifying as sergio busquets yeah he he's just been incredible hasn't he definitely like player of the season thus far for spurs pretty low bar on that but yeah you know he's been um he's been pretty pretty yeah pretty good um james reed says technical floor has risen no doubt honestly though this feels like villas boas spurs it yeah yeah i know what you're saying like um who is it that said a praetorian dwarf about ramos i kind of agree with james it feels quite avb-ish uh and back then obviously we had gareth bale i sort of i lamented last year the lack of star player like truly truly star player spurs have is that is that still a problem will Savio be that guy fingers crossed he will be um but yeah I do we have a bail do we have a cane do we have a son a Berbatov a Robbie Keane a Ginola a Sheringham a Klinsman a Van der Vaart you know i don't think we do and that's it's always kind of a problem right spurs have usually always had one of those players i still think you know i'm thinking about basically about football but i kind of still feel like that is something um it's kind of why yeah the mudrick thing sort of irritates me i know mikey moore is a while off and i've said that on here i do think a lone move is probably best for him overall but then there's also that part of me that feels like you know maybe maybe he just needs to be here maybe we need somebody like him instead of mudrick getting some minutes right um

37:37Jack:um so getting some minutes where he can you know play a bit and be maybe that Tottenham presence we saw the goal he scored against was it it was Charlton when it we scored the screamer um we see he's kind of capable of that I don't know am I revising history maybe a bit but I also don't really care because honestly if it's a crap shot if I'm asked do I want Mikey Moore or do I want Mudrick I want Mikey Moore he's Tottenham he's from the academy do we have anyone that's really Tottenham in this team you know I don't I don't think so and I do think that's important, right?

38:40Dunno.

38:49Jack:And Kurn Nairan says, point on the board, we're massive. Jesus Chris Tucker says, there's a Will Lanxier hole up top. Who knows, mate? Do you know what I mean? patrick longson says commentary and coverage today was utterly biased everyone piling on spurs alan gunner again relishing it yeah you know i'm sort of i'm not saying this is a slight on you patrick i'm just talking about it in general like i'm kind of tired of constantly sort of talking about this talking about like this media agenda against tottenham and everything but you know It's boring, isn't it? It is boring.

39:32Jack:Ben S says, cheers, Jack. Always enjoy these post-match pods. Thank you, mate. Thanks for scratching some analysis out of these donuts. Is it analysis? I guess it's, let's call it emotional analysis, shall we? Perhaps not the most insightful tactical breakdown, but, you know, king of the eye test. barstool preacher as a uh as chas and dave said coined that phrase didn't they um who is the priest says i really think once mamouche and kudos get minutes we're going to be a handful you can see the progression with the eyes this team will gel yeah i don't i don't disagree with that kind of to the point i've been making right um matthew sipola says you're right we've played better um we need to go though we're in a slump no reason to feel this way but i feel like once the first goal dash win happens we may go on a run i don't know um grasping at straws maybe feels like mod tap who i don't know doesn't seem to particularly like me but seems to comment on stuff a bit so you know just for some balance i will say says encouraging lol nothing encouraging about having that much possession and doing nothing with it uh i mean i don't think that's strictly true because we've stopped the opposition from scoring once again that's an improvement we didn't lose today oh that's an improvement on newcastle right um i do think it's encouraging because you can look at that and say once we add goals into the mix then we're a pretty solid team so you know i don't know you're you're allowed to have your own perspective on that but i'm just responding to you sort of you know chiming in in quite snarky fashion mod tap that's all um

41:40Jack:um and a year says whenever archie gray starts we do nothing i literally hate the sight of him he's only a pro football because of his family you know i think that's kind of unfair i do think he's a good player i just think you know we're asking him to do stuff that he's perhaps not that well suited to um i don't think the club are doing particularly right by him um we're not doing right by him by not signing adequate backup for pedro porro and as such he is kind of thrown into this position again so yeah you know i feel for that lad to be honest um who is a priest says decky will never play top flight football again it's kind of feels that way i hate feeling that way but you know I can't I can't lie to myself um that's just how I feel am I there in the physio room and am I there on the training pitch no so this is probably just you know doom mongering but what I would say is this is very bizarre I don't I honestly don't think I've ever seen a situation like this in my lifetime um definitely not as Spurs like even Ledley King managed minutes right and that was a pretty unique and fairly freakish if you like set of circumstances around ledley king and his you know his knee and everything like that right dejan kosevsky has not played for well over a season now and just seems to show no signs meaningful signs really of coming back despite the fact we always hear yeah he's getting better and he'll kind of post something which is usually you know like a a bible quote or something which will be about trying times and you know whatever i'm not i'm not saying that in any sneering fashion i'm simply saying you know it's clearly a very difficult time for him personally and whatever um but i just you know i don't see any evidence that we're going to have a player that's going to be able to come back and be anything close to the player that he once was for us which was you know i think well on his way to being a genuine superstar um i really do you know anybody that's listened to this podcast for you know any amount of time will know how highly i used to speak of dajan kulisewski and what i kind of feel about him um so i don't say this of any sense of glee or anything like that i say it in a pretty you know downbeat fashion that i feel like he's kind of done which is you know it's a shame um matthew sibler also says i'm still wondering why fernandez is taking five extra touches instead of shooting when he has a chance there was that there was that one opportunity wasn't no one he got the ball was it savio i think knocked the ball straight in front of him in the box and he kind of did that strange thing where he like rolled the ball forwards under his foot and it just gave branthwaite that time to readjust his position and block the subsequent shot um but you know hey that's maybe like a confidence thing or or whatever right you know we'll see noah willett says vinay and langer should have been sacked last year they've spent this much money for a manager whose football might not even work anymore and could quit at any time we're missing so many profiles

45:18i would love to be able to argue with that noah but right now anyway in the mire of all this it

45:26Jack:feels difficult to that's what i'd say in response to that isla lily white says we are slowly but surely improving we just need to get that cutting edge i do however believe we looked very good at times today and let's not forget that we didn't have destiny or pedro poro up the spurs keep the faithful i like that i like that isla lily white i hope you're doing well mate um yeah

46:00Jack:patrick longson also says it would be interesting to see how this team measures up against the side that thinks they're better than us. Everton, Forrest and Newcastle have all sat back and played murder ball. Yep, that is a point. I mean, we've got Liverpool on Tuesday. Be interesting to see what happens there, wouldn't it? Who is it then? It's Villa, isn't it? So yeah, the murder ball is strong in them as well, I would imagine right now while they're kind of unsettled and struggling.

46:34Jack:um jm-112vv says i don't want to see solanke in a spurs shirt ever again i'm sorry to break it to you jm-112vv you're going to um billiam dahl says we'd have bitten your hand off for two straight clean sheets in recent years the offense looks a little disjointed with the new bodies and they're definitely in their own heads but i'm less concerned overall yeah i think that's uh i think that's fine jan m747 says leaving the stadium now pissed off reality sets in you're right jack

Read the full transcript

47:21ricochet pig says deeper which i'm guessing was more about my my sort of uh

47:28Jack:my thing i was waffling on about earlier

47:34Jack:james reed says your point about not seeing us get a goal whenever the opposition scores is an excellent one and it's extremely worrying whole city already feel borderline uncatchable it's that bad don't don't say that james don't say that um but yeah that's still that is the sort that is the thing that worries me um yeah zng v2 says so we never looked like scoring why on earth did we let will lank should go also regarding mikey moore i know he's young but he's not 12 for god's sake fair fair point well made kugo oh here we go here we go here's a spicy one kugo8760 says tonali could go down as the worst transfer in our history he can only play the way he's facing he genuinely offers nothing over benton car on current form meanwhile roberto is playing finance in the 10 baffled i personally feel this is what i'll say i personally feel that the resurgence of Rodrigo Benton Kerr is largely down to his own endeavor and everything don't get me wrong and his own ability but also having Sandro Tonali alongside him who can do a lot of the dirty work I think Sandro Tonali does that really well I feel that like in an optic sense spending 100 million on a you know a competitive midfielder isn't that exciting you know you kind of i think we still kind of think oh 100 million that's like what you know psg got mbappe for or whatever shouldn't can't we get one of those sort of players um but i do you know as i sort of said at the time i number one i do kind of think 100 mil is the new 60 mil right now uh and that kind of feels about right um i quite like tonali do you mean i like tonight he's not tearing up any trees i agree um but maybe he's never going to be the type of player that does that maybe he's gonna be one of those sort of understated players that's really very good um even if it's sometimes hard to see exactly what he's doing i don't know um zng v2 sort of adds on to the back of that tonali looks slow and overweight um which yeah maybe

50:14Jack:mike hiff 18 90 1889 says no goals no fun reminds me you saying that no goals no fun this doesn't mean anything to any of you but reminds me of uh when me and my mates we went to the pub once this is in our 20s and uh it was like yeah it's old sort of old school kind of proper pub sort of thing and uh my mate went to the bar asked for a pint and the sort of old woman behind the bar said don't do pints no gas and then he asked he was like oh uh can i have a i don't know like a coke or something he said no gas so me and my mates have always said no gas to each other for years that happened probably 20 years ago there you go um no goals no fun no pints no gas that means nothing to any of you does it um bingai says slanky is poo capote says i am jack santini um bingai says slanky is worse than richie to tell you the truth what are we doing here who is the priest says troy parrot and will langshire banging goals in for fun you know the club is poisoned yeah that is kind of is kind of difficult watching that isn't it play out uh alongside our current sort of issues but you know um vin fuego says roberta deserve he is currently simmering conte level boiling point rapidly approaching i mean i really hope not right um but yeah i think we all we all kind of knew right we all kind of knew that this was going to be the big risk with roberto deserby and we kind of pushed that to the back of our minds rob low 7839 says jack with the greatest respect you're being way too kind to solanke his performance today was an absolute disgrace no fight no guts no physical presence disgusting um was i nice to him i kind of said he was just completely ineffective that he doesn't have a killer instinct i don't really rate him i mean maybe that is nice you know i don't know trying to sort of adopt that thing aren't i that like you know they're still human beings and all that type of thing right i was thinking about that the other day um somebody said and it triggered me i do you know i don't usually look you know you put your head above the parapet people say stuff right and that kind of comes with the territory i think there's a level to it but still you know i can sit on here and blah blah blah blah blah for however long somebody is well within their rights to say i think you're talking crap mate so i kind of get that but i did a pod while i had all my throat stuff right and i shouldn't have done to be fair i was drugged up i was recovering from you know an operation i did this pod and i just it became clear like within minutes of recording it that i wasn't in the best place to do it and somebody just commented on the back end of it just being like he just said like that was like pulling teeth switched it off don't bother anymore or something i don't know he said something like that i just said to him like you know you didn't need to say that did you and i hate i hate doing like an earnest bite on something letting somebody know they've gotten to me but it did get to me maybe i was just a bit sensitive because i've been feeling poorly right but then i kind of thought well who am I to say that you know I sit here and I'm like this player does that that player does this blah blah blah blah blah you know it's all just kind of part of it I think it is a bit different I think it is I do still think it's a bit different it's different number one because somebody said it to me right obviously um but also no I don't know they get paid loads of money don't they um bin guy says we keep buying scraps and rejects and injury prone some other clubs all the time what the heck are we doing then we promote failures with fake happy clap youtubers so many of them lately am i one of them i still sort of think of myself as a podcaster versus is a you a youtuber um maybe i am you know i've done the bus thing i've got a video of that coming that i just need to get some time to edit together it's gonna be quite an undertaking but you know so maybe i am a youtuber i did used to my animations of course didn't i so you know i did that before i uh before i uh podcasted um noah willett says how have we gone from 16-17 Premier League champions to this.

55:41Yeah. Good question.

55:46Jack:Good question. Mike McSnee says, we're only three points off 11th. Okay. Decent context, I guess. Peter Turner says, first 25 minutes. Thought this is good, but soon wore thin, wafer thin mentality throughout the squad. I can't believe we're going into a season with one right back, Tell and Solanke.

56:22Jack:T-Mac KO1 says, I think it will continue this way until January. Yeah, but then what are we going to do in January? Do you know what I mean? Sign some other clogger. Andrew Elliott says, we looked all right. Everton had 10 in their box. In open play at one point, Kudus Solanke, Savio, all getting up to speed, just need a bit of patience. Zeriz and One says, Will Lanxha and Troy Parrott should be our forwards. Well, they're not, are they, mate? So, do you know what I mean? Get over it. You lost, Snowflake.

56:59Jack:HW Pat says, Tottenham is feeling like a giant waste of time at the moment. So much time and energy going into them and absolutely nothing back.

57:09Jack:92 uh who's this rubbish bearded man says 92 93 premier league spurs went winless under livermore and clements with just two points in four games we eventually recovered to finish eighth i think deserve he will get us higher than eighth coys all right i hope so rubbish bearded man

57:34Jack:louise f09 says top of them have been bad for almost a decade media says top of them have been bad for almost a decade spurs fans oh no the media hates us ffs lads come on louise you know you know it's not the full picture right you know

57:59Jack:zeros and ones also says the decky comparison is carzola liam hennessy says i'll give it to the first 10 games before i start being critical fair enough um

58:14Jack:jm you know numbers and letters says jack i envy your ability to see the silver lining but i can't agree i thought everton were terrible today and that wasn't because we made them look terrible imo i mean where do you draw the line on that mate like you know um i don't you know i don't even think i'm like silver lining it i mean perhaps i am perhaps that's exactly what it is i just like i say i've got this you know i've got this sort of this divide right now in my head as to how i feel about it all

58:47Jack:peter tanner says it's important to address the idea about patients and people expecting too much the club needs to set prices at a level that matches the product they're getting it doesn't you can feel the crowd turning as the game goes on no matter how much people pay be patient you cannot fix that with words it has to show on the pitch and soon this is a huge issue i don't disagree

59:15Jack:um no will it also says anyone see the weird deserve the intel thing at full time no i did not i'm just going to literally type deservey tell into twitter and see what people say okay yeah roberto deservey exchanges angry words with mattis tell following the final whistle yeah he's there on the pitch shouting at him sort of saying yeah he's talking about i guess it's like body position the way in which he's looking the way in which he's facing all very publicly all quite performatively yeah it's a bit i don't know i know a lot of you don't really like tell um but i i don't know how helpful stuff like that is to be honest um that is kind of weird

1:00:11Jack:brian park 6906 says ted trunk is my favorite youtuber thank you very much brian appreciate that mate and you've answered the question i am a youtuber there we go um mr stephen stotch says i know everyone says there aren't any fair players flare players in football anymore um but do we have three that are just not very good tell kudos and savio yeah but does this football allow for flare players i guess is part of the question as well isn't it

1:00:45Jack:who is the priest says how many weeks into the season before jacks gets profane and forgets about the paywall give it give it 10 um and mr stephen stutch says watching the scum game brian brobby is what we need the blokes ability to hold it up and bring others into the game is the best in the division he is very good isn't he i think he's kind of one of those players that like I sort of thought, oh, he's just a bit of a lump actually, but he's actually really good. He's good internationally as well. Tidy player, but an incredibly expensive one, I would imagine now, to be honest. We are firmly back in the era of the big man up top, aren't we?

1:01:30Jack:You know, we're fully back in that. I'll remember Kevin Davis at Bolton one for the one for the old old lot he'd be eating good right now Kevin Davis he'd be he'd be lapping it up um but yeah I think I've kind of you know exhausted exhausted all in any points today to be brutally honest with you we got a point we didn't lose you know i do think despite like what many of you are saying i do think that there is some cause for optimism there but equally equally and i think it i think it is actually an equal balance there's probably cause for pessimism and for some alarm um we deserve you with the nature of you know the squad building all that type of stuff it's strange we're just gonna have to see how this one plays out right now i can see it going either way i can see spurs kicking on and eventually having a fairly good season maybe finishing in maybe finishing eighth and i think i'd be like really happier with that and build on that um

1:02:49Jack:but worryingly equally i can see deservey not being here by january and i i'm not saying i want that to happen i'm just kind of saying that's it kind of feels like that's really where spurs are at right now uh it feels that kind of feels kind of weird it feels kind of weird to you know have your manager shouting at a player on the pitch already what four four games four games into a season i don't know we'll see we'll see um yeah if you haven't if this is your first time if you just found the stream today why not drop me a like why not subscribe if it's your first time listening today please leave me a rating please leave me a review actually i think you can only leave a rating if you've listened to like four or five episodes on spotify so i'll let you off but if you're still listening in four or five episodes of time leave me a rating on spotify please share the podcast wherever you share stuff reddit always seems to be a good source i'm not allowed to go on reddit and share my own stuff you know it gets deleted immediately they've got very you know big rules on our coins um but whenever you see those threads when people say what podcast should i listen to say listen to this melt that's always appreciated uh patreon if you want podcasts ad free go to patreon.com slash rtr pod there'll also be additional podcasts there i do ones like this but to preview games um and i usually do them late at night and sometimes sometimes i've had a little whiskey or something so i can be a bit more loose behind the paywall what won't i say what won't i say um too hot for tv and all that so yeah come and join in and also as i've been saying my bus journey i am getting that edited in the first place you'll see that is on patreon so why not come to patreon i think you can get a free trial as well when you first join so patreon.com slash rtr pods help me keep the lights on please anyway appreciate everybody for uh for checking in today for joining me on the journey that is Tottenham Hotspur Football Club have a lovely remainder of your weekend Rosh Hashanah to anybody celebrating much love come on you Spurs

Jack jumps on to discuss Tottenham vs Everton, the first goalless draw at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Spurs controlled the game for the most part, but still, no goals. Is it the lack of a quality striker? Is it the lack of a creative number 10? Or is it becoming ever more apparent that the ground is built upon a Saxon burial ground and vengeful, disturbed spirits plague our fortunes?
