In short

Immediate reaction to Tottenham Hotspur’s 0-1 home loss to Chelsea, focusing on Spurs’ poor defending, toothless attack, and especially their ongoing dreadful home form versus Chelsea.

Guest backgrounds

No guests are present in the transcript; it’s a solo host reaction.

Key claims

Spurs lacked defensive solidity and any attacking patterns, repeatedly played the ball backwards, and created virtually nothing despite Chelsea not being “head and shoulders above.” The host argues the “Chelsea always beats us” excuse is tired, and criticizes Thomas Frank’s approach and Spurs’ lack of ambition. They also question squad quality and depth, citing injuries and the weakness of backups.

Notable examples

Chelsea’s profligacy despite domination; Spurs’ reduced threat even when players like Richarlison and Romero came on; individual critiques of Jed Spence, Van de Ven, and Ben Tanker; praise for Vicario’s shot-stopping and Caicedo’s impact.

1:46uh I just don't really know how I'm supposed to talk about that after um well after that obviously I'm not doing a stream again I'm with child with child it just makes it a bit difficult you know this at least when I'm just recording like this the magic the magic of the audio format is I can just have a little pause tend to her if need be and then carry on recording again and you wouldn't know I mean is anyone going to listen to this anyway after that match is anyone eager to hear anything about Tottenham Hotspur Football Club after that meek pitiful performance and it was wasn't it you know it was this is obviously a podcast that's recorded in the moment it's recorded straight after a game so some of the things I say here aren't always something that I'll echo when I've had a couple of days to sit on it stew on it come up with a more perhaps you know reason take on things but that was pathetic I've seen us lose to Chelsea plenty of times down the years a painful amount of times I think before before this game they said we've only beaten Chelsea eight times or something in the Premier League era which is disgusting it's a miserable fixture I hate playing against them I hate everything that that club stands for and the the frustrating thing is they're not even that good at the moment you know they're not I look at that team I know they've spent a lot of money and stuff but there's a lot of dross in that team there's a lot of players in that team that I could just see playing for us I could see playing for Spurs I don't really think they're a team that should be just routinely coming to coming to our stadium and turning us over um especially not in that fashion i mean that that was shocking that's all i can say i've i've i would say i've got no words through it but that doesn't make for a very good podcast in the wake of a football match it wasn't very good at all um we didn't defend very well that's kind of supposed to be the cornerstone of this thomas Frank project we didn't defend very well and going forwards just toothless absolutely no clue whatsoever I mean I can blame individuals I can say that the quality the technical quality on an individual basis is lacking but equally in terms of our system whatever it is that we're being drilled to do there's just nothing really going on there's nothing really going on at all I haven't seen any patterns of play or the hint of an idea right now other than trying to get crosses into the box you know there's no there's no rhythm to what we're doing there's no real tempo to it it's terrible it's you know it's like it's like running through treacle isn't it it's you know other sort of poorly appropriated metaphors that we can throw in here that was really really bad that was really really bad and now is not the time to have I can't remember who it was I spoke to um who said on the pod I think it was Dan Lowe actually who said that right now every game feels like a referendum you know in terms of like the the public opinion sways so rapidly, doesn't it?

5:47And I don't know, I'm seeing a variety of opinions, an overwhelmingly negative amount of discussion around Thomas Frank, if I'm brutally honest. I mean, I can only tell you how I'm feeling. and what I would say is I feel like I think I've said this already on here but I feel like I have just such little patience now the idea of like projects the idea of you know we've got a road map of five years and stuff it just doesn't it doesn't wash for me if I'm brutally honest with you get players in make the team better you know I'm not when let me caveat this when I say this right when I say I don't have patience I'm not saying Spurs should bring in a new manager and we should be winning the Premier League that year but what I don't have patience for is Spurs just looking like they've got no clue whatsoever you know like I want to see from fairly early on that it looks like we're actually trying to do something that is more than just stopping the opposition from scoring goals and hoping that we can nick one um which pretty much just seems to be seems to be what we're doing but there are question marks over the over the quality in the squad I think that's you know that's definitely the case um I think people just have to choose people have to choose where they want to draw the line on this type of stuff.

7:30Is it Frank's fault? Is it a system problem? You know, is one being negative when one says that? And if it's not that, then it's an individual problem because something is not working, right? I know it's early days and I know all that type of stuff, right? But I don't think it just being early days into a managerial tenure means that the club, the team, should just be playing out and out poorly you know like that game to oh bless you down bless you that today was just awful it was just poor there was there was really nothing to it we weren't we weren't in any way shape or form ambitious we weren't in any way shape or form looking like we were going to score against Chelsea at any point at any point whatsoever the amount of times we'd get the ball in midfield and it looked like maybe you know with a with a few brave passes or a bit more invention there with a few more say rehearsed moves available to us we could have done something other than just pass the ball backwards but I genuinely lost count of the amount of times that Spurs just played the ball backwards I think Vicario would have played it backwards if he if he could have done you know it was I don't know mum I know I'm I know I am moaning today but that was that was awful that was awful I hate Chelsea I hate this game and I know I know the sort of the the get out of jail free card for Spurs is well it's Chelsea they spend loads of money on players it's Chelsea they win the Champions League blah blah blah blah blah it's Chelsea they do this to us haven't you seen this before this is just what happens in this game but why why should that be the case because as I say you know I don't I don't look at this Chelsea side and think god you know they've got so many players in that side that would drastically improve us I really don't feel that way I feel that in in as I said at the top I feel in many respects they are they're largely comparable to us I think Casado is a remarkable footballer he showed that he was when he was at Brighton and I know he kind of became like the the banter figure when he say you know didn't hit the ground running immediately when he went to Chelsea after they spent all that money on him but he's definitely looking every bit the worthwhile investment now he's yeah one of the one of the best players in that position in probably in the world, really, if we're to take it to those levels.

10:19But other than him, Esteval is a great player. João Pedro, a good player, really good player, to be fair.

10:31But other than that, I don't look at Chelsea and think they are head and shoulders above us. I don't look at this Chelsea team and think they should have been able to hold us at arm's length like they did today we barely bothered them at all um they were they were massively profligate in front of goal their biggest worry from today should have been them not managing to capitalize on the domination they had in this game what should what should be sparking concern for them even though they're all there acting like they've won the league because you've won a you know one of the easiest to win at stadiums in the Premier League whatever still they've beaten us away from home all that type of thing right they should be really asking questions of themselves why they didn't win today 3-4-0 because they should have done they absolutely dominated as they had more than enough opportunities that they carved out over the course of the game I don't you know I'd be I'd be concerned if I were them as to why they haven't managed to do much better with that um with that type of performance with that level of performance that they they had um it's just really frustrating it's really frustrating and i know you know it's all going to be where do we go from here what do tottenham do from now i mean what tottenham do from now is probably just have a season much like we've had to this point where we have a game like today where we look absolutely terrible and then there's every chance we beat Manchester United next week you know and we look good again and we're asking ourselves how is it that we're capable of doing this and when we play so badly on other days the world's biggest soccer tournament has arrived and you can trade the entire tournament on Calci on Calci you can trade every match from the opening stage all the way to the final on Calci you're trading against peers in a live market meaning there's no house and as the probability changes you can buy in and out of your position for a For a limited time, download the CalShe app and use code CUP26 to get$10 when you trade 10.

Chronic migraine is 15 or more headache days a month, each lasting four hours or more. Botox, onabotulinum toxin A, prevents headaches in adults with chronic migraine before they start. It's not for those with 14 or fewer headache days a month. It prevents on average 8 to 9 headache days a month versus 6 to 7 for placebo. Prescription Botox is injected by your doctor. Effects of Botox may spread hours to weeks after injection causing serious symptoms.

Patients with these conditions before injection are at highest risk. Side effects may include allergic reactions, neck and injection site pain, fatigue, and headache. Allergic reactions can include rash, welts, asthma symptoms, and dizziness. Don't receive Botox if there's a skin infection. It looked like we're turning a corner and all that type of thing. And then we have the game against Newcastle, which is fair enough. We rotated the side a bit. St James' Park away is difficult. Newcastle are a very good side, really. But has that rocked our confidence? Has that led to Spurs putting in the sort of performance that they did today?

14:53has you know is frank's tinkering if you like getting in the way of things a bit you know it's it's a it was a hugely rotated lineup again today that got derailed early doors didn't it because of the sort of strange injury that happened to Bergvau I'm not not really sure if it was just a I'm guessing it was just a precautionary thing a sort of head injury ball hitting him in the head and all that type of thing um has that derailed him a bit you know xavi siemens comes on didn't look at all ready really um you know it's a difficult one with him it's a difficult one with him um i'm not really quick to jump on the sort of you know he's not very good thing i i still tend to quite like him I would just expect I mean I say this I say the same thing about him every single week I think just as we sort of noticed you know as we are noticing now Casado is a prime example of this arrived at Chelsea big price tag and he's now justifying it but at first you know looked like a bit of a waste of money Enzo as well Enzo Fernandes another player came for big money looked like a bit of a waste of money and is now a good player you know he's a good player a big part of that Chelsea team it's just what happens so you know Xavi Siemens we don't need to be we don't need to be sat here saying oh he's terrible he's a waste of money what was the point of that because you know we simply we don't know just yet do we we don't know I would like to see more from him you know and I think that's maybe just the sort of the basic football fan in me that wants to see the big money signing hit the ground running and become one of our star players become the face of the club the franchise player all that type of thing but if we have to be a bit more patient we have to be a bit more patient i just really and i'm yeah i'm being brutally honest i say i'm really struggling with that right now i'm really struggling with the having to be patient side of things when it comes to Spurs because I feel like we've been patient for a long long time now you know even when we were really really good under Pochettino there was an air of patience in terms of well we'll see where this goes but we're not really going to spend money because we're opening up the stadium and all this type of thing and it feels under the entire time we've had Enoch in charge Daniel Levy Enoch whoever you want to call it you know we've been patient we've been patient we've been We've waited for managers to go through their cycles.

17:33We've waited for players to settle in. We've waited. We've waited. Mañana, mañana. It'll come good, right? I'm just getting a bit tired of it now. I am getting a bit tired of it. I want Spurs to just look like they've got a bit more of a clue. Look a bit more solid. Turn the tide on a few of these fixtures. Why is it that Chelsea come here and just win? if I'm look if I'm being completely harsh about it and I'm going to be honest I'm not just saying this for effect it's the way I felt I recoiled a bit the way Frank was talking about this fixture pre-game it had the distinct whiff of competition winner kind of chat about it big game under the lights against Chelsea big rivals we look forward to these type of games I don't know it just sparks the wrong note for the players are all excited about this a big game against Chelsea big club I don't want them to be excited about it I don't want them to be relishing this like a like a day at the fun fair you know I mean it's not fireworks night this is this is supposed to be you know us having one of our most hated loathed rivals at our ground we should be chomping at the bit to go into him yeah we're ready for him we're going to give him hell that's what we want to do you know not this we're looking forward to it it's exciting it's a big day out for us all and that was just that was just my overriding feeling from his pre-match presser um you know he is as people often say he's very respectful of the opposition and all that type of thing how much of a bearing does that have who knows you know I don't know it might just be who he is as a person and right now when Spurs are sort of stuttering we're looking for things and I know we're sat third in the table and whatever but this this home form is appalling the home form is appalling we've been playing badly at home for I think was it three wins in the last year now the last calendar year at home which is just quite frankly astonishing

19:54something's got to change you know it has to who knows how it does who knows if it does but something has to change and performances like today outside of that so take the home form away take away whatever you know our kind of stop start ness to this season that game in isolation was it was disgusting it was a disgusting performance um i think a lot of those players really should be ashamed of themselves there wasn't an awful lot of fight there i think they just looked totally overwhelmed it looked like they didn't really have any any answers for the questions that Chelsea were asking if we're going into football cliches territory right and it's just it's just frustrating it's just really frustrating it's really frustrating to be in this place isn't it um but there you know there we have it that's kind of it's where we're at it's what we're doing we're still in this place where we're asking ourselves how good or not are we

21:11and right now I honestly think not very good

21:17I honestly think really right now we have a lot of players that just aren't really very good at all and I know people will say that's negative and people will say that that's you know not the way to look at this but that's how I feel about it ultimately I feel Spurs will get better when the quality of player that we have available to us improves i know we have some significant injuries and that isn't something we should just sort of overlook it's definitely a factor to this it's definitely a factor to our stuttering form you know you can't hide away from that but it also suggests that the you know the backups that we have are not good enough we need to find more quality we have to um and that's on enic isn't it that's on viv lewis and and the rest of them who have their kind of big chat about making spurs competitive about you know taking us up a level all that type of thing well let's just see it now um we'll see it come january there will be the excuses made of course as always that no real business gets done in January but where there's a will there's a way as I keep saying um shall I do the players I might as well um but I don't you know I don't have an awful amount of like positive stuff to say about many of them did you know Sam's Club isn't a store it's actually a club with cool finds and like a whole community.

24:01Julio Mevacario, you know, really, really good today again, to be fair to him. You know, he's hopeless with his feet. He doesn't really start attacks for us, and I think that's a problem. But when it comes to shot stopping, when it comes to saves, he's great. He's one of the better keepers in the league for that. and he reduced the deficit today, didn't he? Which was pivotal, so fair play to him. Jed Spence, I've got to say Jed Spence today I thought was absolutely guff. I thought he was terrible. I don't know whether he's getting too high on his own supply, loving the smell of his own farts, all that sort of thing, but not good enough at all.

24:46Didn't look switched on. And Caicedo nabbed the ball from him. And he just gave up. And I didn't really notice it at the time. But when they keep playing the goal back at half-time and now at full-time as well. He's just standing there. Looking exasperated. And not really chasing. Not getting stuck in. Not doing anything to rectify the fact he's kind of been. you know caught out there um really disappointing

25:27I expect more from him you know I expect more from the guy that's sort of putting himself out there you know he's done the big chat and I think you know many of us like it the penitentiary posts and all that type of thing we like that we like a player that backs himself but I just want him to focus again on his game on his fundamentals the things that he does well because it's just I don't think he has been playing very well the past few games and today was definitely one of them

26:01Van de Ven I honestly think was terrible today as well I think Van de Ven was all over the place a real sloppy performance from him in many respects he just didn't really look like he had his head screwed on properly he was often chasing the ball you know like I continue to say I don't think his partnership with Danso you know breeds as much confidence for him as his partnership with Romero does and that's fair enough but I don't think that should be so much just a total reflection on Danso um I think it more just shows you probably quite how good Romero is um I'm sure if Danso played alongside Romero in some way you know he'd be he'd be grand um because I actually think well go on to Danso I actually think Danso's good um I was quite surprised I think he got He got bullied a couple of times by João Pedro, actually, who is at least by sight is a smaller guy than him, smaller frame, but is dogged as a real kind of tenacious attacker.

27:17And he gave Dancer a bit of a horrible game today. There's one moment in particular where he gave him a proper shove. Do you know what I mean? And they nearly scored as a result of it when he nabbed the ball and got in there. so yeah fine from dance you know I don't I don't really think he's sort of you know done anything wrong or you know is at fault for anything I thought you know in terms of like defensive weak links it was definitely van de Ven today who I just yeah don't think was was very very good at all um Pedro Porro bit of a nothingy performance wasn't it from him it was all right wasn't good wasn't bad he just sort of did his thing and that was that Ben Tanker I thought was actively quite poor today

28:12no real invention from him no real guile in that midfield I know he is capable of having a good performance here and there but I continue to say I think overall he feels like a wasted shirt he feels like you know let me say that when I say that I mean that I feel like a top quality player in that position would be transformative for Tottenham right now I think we've got like a good player who can do a job in a really really important position on the field I mean to be honest every position's important isn't it but some more so than others really if we're being honest and central midfield is one of the most important positions on a football pitch, really.

29:03Just disappointing, I felt anyway. I'm just trying to sort of see if I've got any of his. I mean, you know, his passing was all right, to be fair. You know, it was, at least it was accurate, but the majority, no, 15 passes in his half, 15 passes in the opposition half. So, you know, he's, it's what it is. But I'm sure the majority of it were sideways and, you know, not really very adventurous at all. I just don't really feel like he puts in much of a shift either. I don't really feel like he was being much of a nuisance. um Jao Polinha good performance does what Jao Polinha does good without being exceptional really um so fine Bergvau obviously I can't say anything about him but Xavi Siemens came on um and I do think I think there's probably going to be quite a few uncharitable takes about him but I do think was trying his hardest yeah I do I do think he was giving it a go I think he was moving the ball about quite nicely um we'd just like to see a bit more from him but you know what's he going to do and he hasn't maybe got the support around him pat matassar uh you know i love him you know he's one of my favorite players if not my favorite tottenham player just a sort of nothingy performance from him tonight really one to forget um honestly one of those where really if i was being horrible about it i'd be saying was he playing because he didn't really set the world alight did he I don't think he even set a safety match alight with that performance so I mean that metaphor does that metaphor work he didn't set the world alight he didn't really even set see what I was trying to do there in the in the heat way of the moment was trying to say like look setting the world alight is a big thing but setting like what's the most inoffensive thing to set a light it's a safety match isn't it but safety matches notoriously are actually quite difficult to light um because you have to have that safety surface to do you have safety matches in america i don't know if you do um they're quite weird like just to light a safety match you've got like this strip on the side of the box which specifically lights safety match i'm sure it must be like a chemical reaction or something that happens between the two of them but you don't get that nice smell that you get from lighting a proper like course match you know one of those matches that you can just light against your stubble if you're double hard or you can light you know by striking a match against a wall or something like that what do they have in them is it cordite or something like that i don't know so what i was what i was trying to do there was like say like you know let alone setting the world on fire he didn't set this like little match on fire but I've sort of undone myself there now and what I've done now is instead of talking about the football I've started talking about matches um and probably quite poorly as well sort of talking about them and their chemical compounds the things that make them up and not having a clue as to how any of these type of things work what are you going on about Mamet Kudus yeah fine

32:47am I am I arriving at the point where I sort of feel like I would like to see a little bit more from him maybe I am you know maybe I am I'm just going to leave that one there because it's not a fully it's not a fully fermented thought that one yet right it's just something that's crept into my head if you like it's a chaser off the back of that riveting match talk just that suddenly like oh i've got to talk about mamacudis now how do i feel about him good one of our best players would i like to see a bit more from him yes i would

33:40you know he's a good player I'm sure he's got a lot of ability I think we know that he's got a lot of ability but I just find it quite you know I find it quite depressing that we've got a bloke playing for us again in a really important position and I know we couldn't have foreseen Dominic Solanke having the sort of injury that he's had but at the same time to have only Richarlison as backup or as foil and no other viable options that we've had to take a geezer on loan that if I was to hazard a guess isn't really that bought into Spurs, doesn't really care knows that we're like a Champions League club knows that we're a decent enough club in London so he can stay playing at a certain level for a year or so and see where he ends up until he gets his move to whoever it is he'll get a move to a Villarreal or someone like that who knows and probably do really well for him but I just don't feel like he's that invested in Spurs I'm not really that invested in him I feel like he's going to have one of those Tottenham careers that you know we talk about in a few years time I remember when we had Rando Colomawani for a year yeah he didn't really do anything did he but I still wouldn't be surprised if he has a big moment in him that's the thing I think he's that type of player he might perhaps get a bit of a cult status for a moment be it a North London derby goal or something like that do you know what I mean sort of like how Divock Origi did at Liverpool obviously the goal against us I think he had a few other moments and he had a goal against Barcelona and stuff as well in the lead up to us so I wouldn't be overly surprised if Rando Calamor only has that sort of thing with Spurs

35:45Richarlison came on 60th minute didn't do anything did he did we create anything to allow him to be able to do anything no so let him off the hook look Christian Romero came on. Do you know what actually, when Romero and Richarlison came on at first, I actually thought like we would maybe come back into the game. I thought we'd started to maybe knock the ball about a little more like cleanly. Romero is so important to the way we play in any system really because he is technically a really sound footballer. He's really, really good. uh he's really sound in in possession in his passing in his you know general kind of reading of the game and so i did feel like a boost when he came on and then we made those other changes we brought on destiny brennan and odaba who you know all didn't really do anything i think suddenly again the whole sort of system the whole team was blown wide open we didn't really know what we were doing again and it just petered out there was no like frantic end to the match there was no kind of spurs turning the screw knocking on the door like frantically trying to get an equaliser let alone trying to nab a win or something like that an undeserved disgusting win we would just sort of resign seemingly to Chelsea just beating us and that's really disappointing it's really disappointing for for that to be the case um but that is that's kind of how i feel about that and i appreciate not everyone's going to be really happy with like my take on this game i know people are you know tend to somehow want me to sort of bright side a lot of this stuff but you know i don't feel i don't feel like it's all doom and gloom i don't feel like the frank project is doomed to fail and all that type of thing i just think today was an awful performance I think it was awful from the manager I think it was awful from the players just a general whiffy disgusting one from Spurs and I think the sort of excuse that well it's just what Chelsea do to us is lame to be honest I'm sick of that I'm tired of it and I don't want that to be the case anymore I want Spurs to try and sort of turn their fortunes in this fixture a bit no it's what Pochettino is doing isn't it really for the for the most part anyway made us more competitive against them winning at the bridge all that type of thing I just want a few more players that want it a bit more you know because I think that's what we had you know we there's always going to be comparisons to Pochettino team because they're so brilliant but you know people love doing it after those those first 10 games under Ange people are saying I think we've already got I think this team is already better than the Pochettino it's just nonsense man it's nonsense it was nonsense then and it's it's clearly nonsense now I just want some players that really really want it they really want to change the perception of Spurs they want to show up in games like today games against Chelsea Arsenal game coming up I want to feel that hunger I want to feel that desire from them and I know I know they just do a job they're just footballers they're not fans of the club I know that but tell that to tell that to all the players tell that to Arsenal's players you know who fight for every ball every first ball every second ball Spurs just didn't do anything we were just meek today just lacklustre it's just really it's just really disappointing it's really disappointing it just feels you know just makes me feel a bit you know upset i'm upset anyone that's seen whiplash um it's just how i feel a bit about that one because i know it's early days i know there's going to be you know teething problems and all that type of thing but as i keep saying even within the prism of that that was a particularly poor performance and I'm just annoyed about it sorry I've been a bit ranty today but you know that's that's just it I'm just fed up and I'm going to leave that there because I'm just kind of going in circles a bit thanks to everybody that has tuned in please leave ratings please leave reviews if you listen on Spotify, please just do me that solid of hitting the five stars on Spotify.

40:45I know I'm very thankful to the number of people who listen, but there's a lot more of you listening on the reg than who have just taken that second's effort just to click on the rating. So please do that um if you are listening on itunes or apple podcasts sorry i should say now please leave a rating please leave a review share the pod you know you can do that follow me on instagram ted trunk um twitter obviously i've actually got my twitter back i finally managed to wrestle it back i found a reddit thread that was saying you know they will try to not help you but if you just keep pestering them it's probably a case that on their side they're like okay this is definitely a human being it might be their own type of like bot filtering or something but yeah I emailed them like three four times with the same problem just saying can you help me help me help me somebody hacked my account changed the password and changed the email address on file and so when I was trying to get back in there was the Twitter telling me boy if you don't have the email address we can't help you because it's not your account I was like yeah but this is my this the email address I'm writing to you now from is the one that's been associated with this account since 2009 so you must be able to help anyway eventually they have done they've given it back to me so sorry you're not getting rid of me that easily but follow me on blue sky follow me on twitter all that shit

42:29yeah you know frustrating isn't it oh patreon patreon.com slash rtrpod if you don't like adverts go to patreon and you get every single pod ad free you've also got my pre-match previews on there which are particularly delirious right now recorded one last night a preview of of this Chelsea game and I was literally falling asleep by the end of doing it so you know just into newborn life and all that am I going to keep using that as an excuse yes I will because that's just it isn't it nothing can prepare you for it as people said to me and by golly by golly they were they were right but I'm enjoying it I'm loving it very happy thank you to everybody that sent um well wishes um dms or in public or anything like that it really does mean a lot i really do appreciate it um it's just lovely it's very nice time of life nice being in a in in this little bubble and i feel very you know very happy very lucky very blessed anyway up the spurs it will get better won't it please get better.

A seriously poor performance from Tottenham has seen them slump to yet another defeat to Chelsea. Little in the way of attacking threat, disjointed passages of play and now ropey defending. Thomas Frank's work is cut out for him trying to change a few opinions on his brand of football right now.
