In short

Reaction to Tottenham’s 1-1 behind-closed-doors friendly vs Getafe, emphasizing “minutes in the legs,” early fitness/rustiness, and what it suggests for the upcoming season and transfer window.

Guest backgrounds

No guests are interviewed in this episode; it’s a solo host show with listener questions read from chat.

Key claims

Sandro Tonali was “cut above” and disproves doubts about his passing; J.P. van Hecke looks like a calm, Romero-like center-back upgrade; Andy Robertson’s delivery is standout quality even in pre-season; Spurs still need more attacking signings. The host expects a midfield trio of Tonali-Fernandez-Gallagher. He supports selling Bergvall for ~£50-60m. He’s concerned about Mikey Moore’s readiness versus bringing in established forwards.

Notable examples

Tonali’s class and link-up glimpses with Matias Fernandez; van Hecke’s composed defending and physicality; Robertson’s “obscene” delivery; Mikey Moore looking less ready than Luca Williams Barnett in similar games.

2:41Jack:Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello. An inconsequential pre-season friendly behind closed doors, you say. 70 minutes long, you say. Here he is, though. Here he is. as I said in the last one, minutes in the legs for the players, minutes in the larynx for me. 70 minutes. What's all that about? You know? 70 minutes twice in a row, isn't it? What are we doing? What are we playing at here? I'm saying 70 minutes twice in a row because who is it playing now? The youth team playing now after this one? Under 21s, isn't it? Even though it's under 21s, I think it's like largely a... I don't know. Lily White Rose.

3:36Jack:Follow Lily White Rose on TikTok. And he said some stuff about who's going to be playing this afternoon. Includes Matias Fernandez as well, which is good. Is this working? Number one. That's what I want to double check.

3:59Jack:i just can't see if it's all going look maybe it may not be i'm still sort of working out the teething problems with um obs obs software but uh one of the main things i don't know right is um how to get the I don't know how to get the like the chat running when I'm on OBS this should be like a way to just have the the thing go look anyway minutes in the legs Spurs you know we looked alright didn't we it was an alright game like I thought we sort of knocked the ball about pretty nicely it got a bit got a bit tasty in places, which, as I understand it, is kind of par for the course of Getafe. Don't really know a lot about them.

4:58Jack:I just know that they sort of are, them and their gaffer are known for playing sort of anti-football, the low block stuff that Spurs probably, you know, never usually do that well against, do they, historically speaking? And Deserby has maybe wanted to, you know, get a bit of, get some minutes in the legs on that one um i keep talking about minutes in the legs and minutes and things look this is rusty right look it's all rusty and i'm gonna need to like come up to speed with all of this type of thing because it's it's difficult it's difficult um what have i really liked thus far today i really let's start saying straight up front right, right, right from the very beginning, I will say.

5:53Sandra Tonali, what a wonderful player.

5:57Jack:Cut above, really. An absolute cut above. I think like any of the early kind of worries about his price tag and all this type of stuff, look, forget that stuff. Forget how much he's worth. Forget how much, do you know what I mean? Forget the type of player you think we could have gotten for a similar amount of money, blah, blah, blah. We spent it. He's here. And he looks absolutely quality. I think it's Billy T or somebody has dug out an old tweet when it was basically Man City and Arsenal vying for the signature of Sandro Tonali. And it's, what's his name, the Italian one? Here we go. He sort of says, as like an add-on to this, Spurs are also monitoring the situation and all of the comments are the whole kind of like you know the row of soldiers and there's a clown and there's all that type of stuff like what Spurs doing here you could you don't play in this like ballpark all that type of stuff right so they're all acknowledging that Tenali's quality at this point and it seems almost farcical that Spurs would consider themselves a suitor or a suitable a suitable suitor for him and there's isn't it funny how that's all suddenly changed how the narrative all suddenly changed to actually he's not that good actually he's a bit of a waste of money all that type of stuff um so don't let that noise influence you just watch games like today yeah i know it's only a pre-season game but still the class shines through and i think like the funny thing is like he's one of those players that like i was told like all summer long basically oh he can't pass he's used he's not a very good footballer he just kind of like runs around a bit nonsense and i mean i kind of knew that was not true anyway because as i say i've i've watched him sort of longingly at newcastle as well for a few years so i just didn't really buy that player valuations are always you know a bit wild and you go through these phases where it's all a bit mental but now it seems like there's lots of players getting bought for around the 100 mil mark if not above so it shows you that the market is is trending that way isn't it um just in respect that once upon a time top end players were 50 60 mil and now they're 120 mil it's just just what happens it's football inflation so this 100 mil we've signed for tonight is still a lot of money don't get me wrong but I still probably put this as as a few years ago Spurs making a 70 65 70 mil signing that feels about right when I sort of view it through that lens I think I mean I don't even need to view I don't even need to qualify what lens I view it through I think he's brilliant watching it today I just I look at him and I think he's a I think he's a cut above i do i think he's i think he's a a really really good player and i'm look you know hopefully we are just being overly cautious with matthews fernandez um because the little glimpse we got of the two of them together i think it was the first pre-season wasn't it the first behind closed doors ones when fernandez scored that lovely goal um i can't remember who it was against now I genuinely can't even remember.

9:24Jack:But the two of them together looked great. And I know we're all a bit squeaky bum about our attacking options. And when you look at today, I think people are justified in being a bit squeaky bum. I don't think it's head spinning, unjustified meltdown, all that type of thing. I think Spurs need some more attacking options. They do.

9:55Jack:but one of the other big things we really needed was a whole new midfield we needed we got walked we got walked through game after game after game last year i don't i don't think people are going to be walking through us now i think the most likely trio touch wood and all that type of stuff you know people aren't getting injured and things but i think the most likely trio we're going to see this season a lot is tonali fernandez gallagher probably all right that's just that's just kind of my gut feel on it um i'm not trying to put like you know bad juju or anything like that on madison or kolosovsky i just i have my thoughts i have my thoughts on those two and probably their long-term viability um how much they can be relied upon see also destiny as uh as deserve he says i quite like it i quite like it when he talks about him like that um because we've said like the dodgy the doggy all these different things he's just wandered in and he's like an actual italian man it's good in it it's nice it's lovely lovely lovely language italian lovely very similar to spanish very very similar i think they're mutual what is it mutually intelligible is not mutually legible is it that something like that i think it's kind of like you know if you asked an italian to sit and examine spanish they're not going to be able to do it but if you are if you get a group of italians and spanish together at a bar they have a few drinks they'll probably be able to pick up on one another's conversations to a certain degree kind of interesting isn't it kind of interesting um it's a very nice language italian very romantic very nice flow to it i don't know that's a bit of a trope but it is nice um the other thing about tonali that i really like whilst i'm on this tonali flex is that uh this episode is brought to you by google chrome you think you know a browser but gemini and chrome that's new it can help you with practically anything on the web like restoring a vintage motorcycle from a 50 page restoration block or finally break down that long article you've had open for weeks Gemini and Chrome is here for it.

13:22Jack:He's a hard bastard. And I like that. I liked him just pushing those two Getafe players around, like right in the closing stages of this game, just muscling them both off the ball. Fair on the amber side of a fair challenge, but still out-muscled two of their players. And then one of them hacked him, didn't they? And that's what sort of kicked off all the handbags, I guess you'd call it, probably, wouldn't you, in pre-season. But I like that. I like that he's got that. I like that he's got that like little kind of kick about him. Jack Gallagher, who I had on the pod, big Italian football man, said that, you know, Tonali is exactly the sort of player that we've lacked in a North London derby for a few years, basically since sort of Kane has gone.

14:14Jack:he's going to be one of those lads that like really really is up for a game of that sort of magnitude a fiery kind of local derby all that sort of thing he's going to be he's going to be bang up for it um and i'm bang up for that i'm bang up for a bit of that jampo van hecker jp jp what a player what a player a little bit of fault a little bit of fault for the goal it's a bit clumsy for their goal but we'll let him off we'll let him off um just lovely a lovely lovely player a lovely footballer again i keep i keep kind of saying it like one of my hot takes ahead of this season is that jpvh is going to go on and just be considered an incredible piece of business and maybe like one of the best sort of center backs in the Premier League I think he's definitely going to be probably our best centre-back it's going to completely completely make the whole pants pulled down thing look ridiculous and I am stealing their gag but as as Ricky and Flav said on the fighting cock usually all the best stuff happens when your pants get pulled down so you know just saying just saying but yeah just very calm very composed he who shall not be named almost christian romero so

15:47Jack:there's similarities there there's a lot of similarities there i feel like there's going to be a a fairly seamless transition fingers crossed from romero to van hecker but i just kind of feel like van hecker will hopefully or hopefully kind of have his head a bit more screwed on them romero because look you know as much as i feel and as much as i've always i've said on here down the years i feel that kind of romero's reputation does him no favors and people kind of jump to conclusions based off the back of whatever you know he um he still doesn't help himself does he doesn't help himself at all times and uh you know we'll see we'll see um

16:48Jack:people don't like it people don't like it when i um when I do this one but I have said already and I'll say again

17:03Jack:I get why we're I get why we're open to offers for Bergvau I think he was fine today I think he was all right but I think he just I don't know he got run past a couple of times I think he was partly at fault for the goal which you know it's got sort of probably 50 50 between him and van hecker so you know but i do think like you know his sort of challenge leading up to the goal was just kind of a bit him and he is a young player and he has got a lot of promise but when we're talking about getting 50 60 mil for him from forest take the money take the money and move on move on um that's kind of my feelings on that one matthys tell is so funny man like the the sort of the i don't know if it's the dimensions of it i don't know what it is the home pitch though is just absolute kryptonite to matthys tell absolute kryptonite a real kind of nothing he no not nothing he had he had a couple of nice little bursts down the wing and i think he got a tasty ish ball into the box on a couple of occasions that nobody managed to get on the end of but for the most part a whole lot of nothing really um which is kind of a shame and it's not i'm not rowing back on anything i've said in this pre-season about him i'm still a big fan i think he's very talented i think he's going to go on and prove a lot of people wrong this uh this season but it also does just show you that like you know he's still got work to do he's got work to do um if he wants to you know perhaps become the player that he could um Mikey Moore again look it's a it's a 70 minute pre-season friendly and stuff but if I'm if I'm brutally brutally honest we've sat and watched Luca Williams Barnett in similar kind of games right in similar occasions and the majority of people i would say like genuinely like 95 at least percent of people have all been like that kid's quality let's hope he gets some minutes this year he looks like he's ready for some first team football whereas looking at mikey moore today

19:40Jack:I was just kind of like, yeah, I see why we want to get him another loan deal. I see why we want him to get a bit more experience before we consider him fully a part of the first team, part of the first team squad. That's not me saying he's useless. That's not me saying he's terrible. I think he's very, he looks like a talented young player from other moments we've seen of him in the past and everything. I'm talking about right now, right here at this. I think, just ask yourself this. Would you be happy if anybody right now getting kind of angry or whatever, doesn't really like what I'm saying, would you be happy if Mikey Moore was one of our attacking options this year over bringing in Savinho, for example?

20:36Jack:because i i don't think he's there i don't i don't think he's there and there is definitely the argument to be had that the pathway needs to be there for these players and the only way they really truly will become that player is if they start getting minutes harry kane is an example but harry kane was something of a freak right but i get it like around that topic i kind of get the point um but i still just feel in the long run i don't i don't i don't want to see like mikey moore finished at tottenham i don't i don't want to see it if he gets well i think fc coln uh i think that deal's fallen through um i don't know if it has fallen through permanently or if it was just for this afternoon because De Zerby wanted to play Mikey Moore in this game.

21:31Jack:Not 100 % sure. Not 100 % sure exactly what's happened there. But if we do get him another loan out to the Bundesliga or something like that, you know, regular first, with all due respect to the SPL, it's a massive step up going to the Bundesliga. if you're getting guaranteed sort of first team minutes in the Bundesliga which is you know one of the one of the best leagues on the face of the planet then that's you know that's good I think that's good that's a that's a you know that's a more viable kind of gauge as to where more is that in relation to if he should be starting at Tottenham or not um so yeah that's that's kind of my my piece on that one And Andy Robertson is another player who is funny.

22:25Jack:Like, I guess just because of his age and I guess because of the overwhelmingly sort of negative takes I saw from a lot of Spurs Twitter. At the time of signing Andy Robertson, I was never I was, you know, I was never negative about Robertson. I was I was always up for it. And I saw it as like a decent piece of business. yeah we bring in somebody like Robertson and he'll be all right but my focus was always on he'll be good for the the dressing room his experience will be good I doubt he'll play an awful lot but he's the sort of character you want to have around he's the sort of person that you need to have in the mix just bringing standards up or whatever right I think the thing that's kind of struck me and again the big caveat is it is only pre-season um and all that type of thing but i do think the thing that's really stood out for me is like oh he is actually quality you know he's still he's still a really good player his delivery is obscene um he's i mean his delivery is the best thing i've seen at spurs in a in a long time i mean to be there probably since Perisic who had an amazing delivery but it's easy to forget that Perisic even really played for Tottenham isn't it which is kind of wild but he did um but yeah like Robertson I just think is yeah I think he's going to prove a lot of people quite wrong this year I think he you know I think he's I think he's going to be our first choice and I think he's going to be really good um and it's actually sort of shaping up to you know it looks like it's actually a free transfer you know free transfer for a guy in his early 30s still and i get that like in that position of the pitch and what he's going to be asked to do by the zabi will require a you know will have a huge physical toll upon whoever's in that type of position um and that might start to catch up with Robertson I do kind of get that but right now anyway I'm looking at this and thinking we don't have European football we've got a Premier League season ahead of us and cup competitions for as long as we you know are competent in them I think he's going to be able to handle that touch wood again touch wood um but I really yeah I like him I like him um Archie Gray again like we're all going to say right back's not his best position and all that type of thing, but he's a really, really talented young player.

25:12Jack:He really is. I just think a lot of what he does is very composed. I think he's very crisp. I think he's very neat in a lot of his passing, in his overall play. I think his tackles today were particularly well-timed at the best of times. I think, you know, just talking about like the Deserby thing, does he maybe have the dynamic physicality that you would want from a player who can play down the wings, bombard? If you look at somebody like Pedro Porro, in contrast to Archie Gray, then, you know, that's kind of where it falls down. But if we're still thinking about developing Archie Gray to be a midfielder one day, you know, I think we're in more than capable hands.

26:03Jack:Richarlison sort of non-existent there's a few whispers going around that Solanke is just injured more injured than people think so you know this comes down to what we have all known before this game and after this game that we need more players we need more attacking players you would imagine that we will fingers crossed get a couple more over the line before the end of the window you would expect Savino to get done and then maybe there'll be a surprise one maybe there'll be a surprise one there's lots of like Madrid type ITKs coming out talking about Endrick and all that type of thing yeah maybe maybe Endrick on a loan or something with an option to buy I don't know I don't know you know let's not let's not give too much oxygen to all that type of stuff which could probably just be agent talk you know beg your pardon um let's read some of these questions this episode is brought to you by google chrome you think you know a browser but gemini and chrome that's new it can help you with practically anything on the web like restoring a vintage motorcycle from a 50 page restoration block or finally break down that long article you've had

27:55We'll be right back. or on Lowe's.com, right from the Lowe's Pro Desk. Build quotes faster and source the materials you need to keep your jobs moving. Just like that at Lowe's. 28:25Jack:Hacker CPS, hello. Welcome back for the new season. says quick send the team some alcohol it's good medicine that's what deserve he said to me took them all out on the took them all out on the lash and uh yeah i think he enjoyed it bilagi here he is hello bilagi hello mate christopher hall says um when's the chat about this shambles of a pre-season going to start what are you angry about chris what's going on mate You're not happy about the result or you're unhappy about the type of games we're playing and the manner of them. You've got to elaborate on that, mate. You've got to elaborate on that.

29:06Jack:Jack Underhill says, really liking what Van Hecker and Tonali are bringing, although at the risk of sounding spoilt. Sign two or three forwards this week, please. I don't think it's spoilt. I think it's fair enough. I think it's a fair enough thing to say. Yeah, we'll see. um jack underhill also said i like the links to mika tazzi is that how we pronounce it am i doing a am i doing a yada there mikao mikao tazzi let's say that um he'd be a great forward for our hopefully new wingers to play off yeah lots of people have been posting like the pie charts and stuff of this lad um i just simply made the point off the back of the pie chart that was posted which was basically this lad picks up the ball in good positions.

29:53Jack:He's a decent enough finisher. What is he bad at? Kind of heading, doing other stuff outside the box or what have you. And I was just sort of like, I wonder if Soldado would look a bit like this if, you know, if these sort of pie chart things existed back then. He doesn't look anything like Soldado. Are you just saying that? Is this some anti-La Liga thing? and just fucking, you know, Twitter is just so miserable nowadays. You can't arbitrarily compare two players anymore, right, in a slightly abrasive fashion and not get pushed back anymore. Like, what's all that about, right? What's all that about?

30:42Jack:you know i should be i should be free right to go out and say whatever i want and not have anybody question it and that's my human right okay alan leslie says what a bunch of dirty gits they were they were a bit kevin hawthorne says good morning from lakeland florida good morning kevin how is uh How are tricks in Lakeland, Florida? Whereabouts is that? Whereabouts on the peninsula? Is it called a peninsula? I don't know.

31:23Jack:I went to Destin in Florida once. Enjoyed it. Really nice. Nice place.

31:33Jack:Chris Hall also says, Fernandez starts in the second game, if you haven't seen. I said that, Chris. I've already said that. I said that he was starting in the second game because I was going on about it being woke, the big two games. To be fair, I might have messed up the stream at this point when I was talking about it. I don't know. I'm trying to learn how to use different software and stuff and I just got bothered. It's what it is. Hacker CPS says, Tonali is the new Modric. We need to get him to love Spurs or he'll snake us eventually. you know i did so i did so i did say there's there's shades of modric there you know and i do agree i agree wholeheartedly um filmworks says how many minutes did they play in the first half it's 35 minutes each half 70 minute game um result from weditekle says who won what's the result and anon nomad said 10 nil getafe there we go um and on nomad says didn't didn't like that um flip my desk and my cat wtf why would you say that about bergval okay all right um and on nomad also says i take more over odderbear

32:50Jack:no i wouldn't like if i'm being asked right now if i'm being asked would i want would I want more over I'd have been no no I wouldn't to be honest with you

33:07Jack:Miguel Nuss just says what happened to the game it finished it was a 70 minute game

33:15Jack:why are people coming in to ask what the result is I don't know what's going on Joe Overhill says there must be another behind closed doors friendly midweek um for this lot concerned about a lack of minutes for them um only having the hoffenheim friendly left yeah maybe i want i don't know no idea to be honest if you might if there are any more games or not um but i do know what you're saying i do know what you're saying maybe yeah it's a little it's a little concerning it's a little concerning like the amount of games that we have had or lack thereof thus far. I do think we're knocking the ball about pretty nicely though.

34:05Jack:I think it's also worthwhile considering that I don't think many of the other Premier League teams have been like, you know, I don't think many of them have had like packed pre-season schedules or anything like that. So I don't think we're alone in that. I don't think we're alone. I think it kind of is what it is. But look, we'll see. We need to make some more signings. That's for certain. It's more minutes in the legs. At the end of the day, I think the point I've made before, and I've highlighted the hypocrisy in all this and everything, but once upon a time, not that long ago either, this sort of game just happens behind closed doors, fairly inconsequentially.

34:52Jack:And we hear afterwards, oh, Spurs drew one all with Getafe in a behind closed doors preseason fixture. That's the type of thing that used to happen, right? And now we, because everyone's so thirsty for content and everyone's looking at different ways to make money, clubs are in stuff. They slap these games on the Spurs player and they charge people to watch it. And, you know, we're sort of sat here. I'm doing a podcast talking about a game that doesn't really mean anything. And the cycle continues, doesn't it? The dopamine hit of online content goes on and on and on. But still, we are here and it is kind of interesting.

35:40Jack:I know I'm being sort of jaded and edgelord about it, but at the end of the day, I still quite like watching it. I liked having Spurs back. I like watching them knock the ball about. I always like watching the new signings kind of doing their thing. Tonali definitely is not disappointing. Van Hecker is not disappointing, as I've been saying. Funnily enough, the actual game later will be properly behind closed doors. I'd be interested to know what the decision-making behind that is. I wonder if it's because it's an under-21s game or something. I don't know. maybe Gaddafi didn't sign off on it or I I don't know I don't I I don't know I'm just pure speculation um but look we'll see Hoffenheim I'm actually going to I'm going to Hoffenheim so I'll try and do something of a stream afterwards but it might not be a stream it might just be that I record something on my phone or whatever and then upload it on the way home it'll being real it'll probably be more something like that um but you know we'll see we'll see what happens um might bump into any of you at the game if you are going if you are you can buy me a hot dog uh but if you don't if you're not going to the game and you don't want to buy me a hot dog i'll tell you what you can do you can you can do me a big favor this year and you can leave me a rating or a review wherever you listen to your podcasts you can like and subscribe on youtube please it'd be lovely lovely just to get those numbers up a bit ahead of the season instagram at the trunk tick tock doesn't help i can't really remember my thing i think it's like something convoluted like tehrunk underscore rtr pod which on retrospect probably needs a bit of work doesn't it but still follow me on those and if you really if you really really feel like it patreon.com slash rtr pod ad free podcasts podcasts extra podcasts and you'll get your hands on any new content that i do this season there fast you'll get it there first first and exclusive and there is i'm not just i'm not just dangling this carrot without any substance behind it in yeah about a month's time ish i'm gonna be doing something pretty fun um so yeah watch the space it's gonna be it's gonna be a video thing as well it's gonna be a video thing that yeah i think will be uh a good laugh i mean i keep saying this people might think it's terrible but i'm gonna enjoy it so we'll see i'm not doing vlogging or anything like that don't worry i'm not going to game and do you mean screaming into my phone or anything like this is this is this is about as far as that sort of stuff will get but if you like
