In short

Tottenham Hotspur’s FA Cup exit after losing 1-2 to Aston Villa, with frustration aimed at manager Thomas Frank, Spurs’ playing style (especially first-half negativity), player mentality, and club decision-making/ownership priorities. The host argues the club’s “back the manager” approach isn’t working and questions who would replace Frank if sacked.

Guest backgrounds

No guests are present; it’s a solo host reaction episode.

Key claims

Spurs are “out of another competition” and have become accustomed to losing; Frank is tactically ineffective and emotionally “gnarky” in press conferences; players appear to down tools and ignore the plan, with a brief improvement when they “go off script.” The host disputes narratives that Ange Postecoglou was unfairly targeted, saying Frank is also heavily questioned by the press. The board prioritizes optics/ego and financial gate receipts over fan engagement.

Notable examples

Xavi Simons (called “Xavi Siemens”) showing more creativity when not following the script; Mathys Tell praised for mentality; Micky van de Ven criticized for attitude after an on-field/fan incident; Aston Villa’s Unai Emery praised as a top coach; Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Arteta’s ambitious recruitment used as comparisons.

1:35So, yeah, well, Spurs, Spurs are out of another, another competition. Spurs are out of the FA Cup. Me as a man of 40 years old, I don't really remember Spurs winning, winning an FA Cup. a trophy that was synonymous with the club for a long time. Many, many years, wasn't it? It was the Spurs, the Cup Kings. It was our trophy. It was something we won the most times in the country for a record we held for a really long time. Make your pardon. And now we're out of it again. dumped out by Aston Villa, who, yeah, are really good. Really, really good. I didn't do one of these directly after the game because, honestly, I just couldn't face it.

2:35I wanted to enjoy my Saturday evening. I'd had a lovely day. I'd gone for a nice long walk in the sort of countryside. side and got back, went to the pub, watched the game and just thought, I can't be bothered. I don't want to do it. I don't want to sit there on my Saturday evening and complain about this. So I do it on my Sunday morning. No, I just didn't want to do it last night. I didn't want to do it. I'd had a couple of pints. Oh, you're hard. and I knew I was just going to sort of probably get all foaming at the mouth.

3:17But then I sort of – I genuinely, I look at this and I think like, is that the effect that this is having on everything? Won't somebody think of the podcasters? But what I'm saying is at the very sort of thinnest slice of all of this, right, something that I'm dedicated to doing this, and I think, you know, people have seen that over the past few years. I love doing this. I love doing the sort of the post-match reactions. I love talking to people. I find it just fun. I find it, I don't know, whatever, gratifying. And just that little mechanism to be like, yeah, I really want to do that. I really want to engage on Spurs.

3:59It's gone. And I'm seeing like so many people talking about this now. I think Windy actually has put out quite an impassioned, and dare I say foul-mouthed rant on Twitter about it. And I think it sums up what a lot of people are feeling, though. He said, what the F are our hierarchy waiting for? The decision makers are a bunch of corporate suits who can't see that this is switching people off in droves. Some young people won't come back to Spurs after this. Hopefully it will show up in their effing engagement measures, KPIs or whatever, soon.

4:39And this is it, isn't it, though? It's kind of the front end of all of this is Thomas Frank. You look at that Villa game yesterday. Once again, we had a first half against the Saito. Yes, Villa are a very good team. Villa are very dynamic. Villa are very settled. They're playing well, and they're implementing what it is at Unai Emery, who is a top coach, who is a top coach. I think people sort of forgot that because he says good evening, and the Arsenal fans didn't really take to him, and whatever. I think Arsenal were in kind of disarray at that point. You know, the squad wasn't that settled.

5:12I think much like we have right now, the people making decisions at the top of the club weren't really aligned. There wasn't really much strategic vision there at Arsenal. It was quite a bit of chaos, right? Not chaos like we're seeing here, but still, relatively speaking, they were sort of quite chaotic. So I think when Villa brought in Unai Emery, I'm pretty sure we've been linked with him at points down the years. and after Arsenal, I and lots of people, I think, probably would have been like, oh, no, no, no, no, stay away from that one, disaster, disaster. And then you sort of step back and reflect, you're like, this is a guy that's won a lot over his career, is a really dynamic, progressive coach who just happens to say good evening in a foreign accent.

5:57You know, like, that's a bit disingenuous. I know, like, the Arsenal tenure wasn't particularly great. It wasn't a great reflection on him, But I think Arsenal were a toxic mess at that point. And you couldn't just pin it all on him. And I think that is definitely worthwhile remembering with Thomas Frank right now. Look, whatever Thomas Frank goes on to do, who knows? You know, I don't really care. Right now, I don't feel like he is suited to take on the task that is Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. Maybe if he was stepping into a situation that was a lot more settled, a better squad more players that say suited whatever this thing is that he wants to do maybe it'll be a bit better maybe it would be and maybe he'll get that after we've sacked him and he steps into who knows where i don't know you know it's not for us to west ham or i don't know wherever it's not for us to speculate where he goes next and maybe he will look good and maybe it'll be another opportunity to mug spurs off and say that we were you know that it wasn't right but whatever whatever is happening right now Thomas Frank is just not the guy because like I say to come back to where I started yes we know Villa are very good but it's again it's another first half of stunting play it's another first half of camping in your own half of showing little kind of invention going forwards, of showing no real intent in the game other than to stop the opposition team scoring.

7:35And it just doesn't work. It just doesn't work. And the thing with Frank now is that he's getting so, like, gnarky about it. You know, and fine, you know, he's a human being at the end of the day. Right? You know, he is going to show emotion because every single press conference. one thing I do want I've got to say one thing I do want to say there's this narrative emerging on Twitter right now of people saying they're kind of like they're kind of trying to make out that there's like a thing against Ange because he was an Aussie so it's like why is it that every press conference Ange had to face scrutiny about what it was that he was doing Frank's getting that as well I'm sorry like it's a complete it's a complete nonsense to think that the the press here are somehow like pampering Frank's reputation or something or not.

8:27If you actually watch the press conferences and don't just invent stuff, every single press conference, he is being asked questions. Why are, why is the football so negative? Why aren't the players seemingly responding to what it is that you're doing? Why are the fans not enjoying your football? Like what is the vision going forward? Like he is under a lot of scrutiny from the press. So I'm not really having, and look, But let's be real. A lot of people who are diehard Ange Postacoglu fans that aren't really Tottenham Hotspur fans invent whatever they want to, invent whatever story they want to.

8:59It was a mess under him as well, right? It was a mess under him as well, as it is a mess under Thomas Frank. But this is what I'm saying. These people, the managers, are the figurehead. They're the front of a much bigger problem at Tottenham Hotspur, which is what Windy is alluding to. They're the suits, the people in charge. But let's go back to the game. Let's go back to what it is that Thomas Frank was doing first and foremost yesterday. Nothing. It felt like we suddenly had a spell in that second half where genuinely it felt to me watching it. It felt to me like the players were just like, sack this.

9:39Like, I'm not interested in what he's saying on the bed. There was a moment you see when he's getting the tactics board out and he's talking with Kevin Danso saying, do this, do this. And I think Danso says to him something like, are you sure about that? Like, are you sure? And you just sort of like, this is what it is. Like, I don't think they're having him. I really don't think they are. We're not having him. I don't know what the club, what Vinay Venkatesham thinks is going to happen here. I don't know why he's sort of got into his head. Well, I do know why he's got into his head because Arteta's doing really well at Arsenal.

10:11So he's got this idea in his head that all you need to do is give a manager a bit of time. And you'll turn into a league contending team. Let's just ignore the fact that Arsenal have gone out and been ambitious and signed players like Declan Reisom. And that, look, I hate to say it, Arteta might be a good coach. You know, that might be a thing. Might be a thing we have to accept, you know, that it's not just simply a case that he's been given a bit of time. And look, I know what people are going to say as well. There's a sort of, there's a bit of a false narrative there. Arteta got to manage through COVID.

10:46He got through a really, really horrible period during his sort of Arsenal tenure where he didn't have the scrutiny of fans in the stadium booing him, blah, blah, blah, blah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're not talking about them, though, anyway. We're talking about Spurs. The one period we had of good play yesterday was when it, as I say, seemed like they were going off script. You had Xavi Seamans playing in a sort of free roll. Yeah, right, he was anchored centrally, but he was still in a kind of free roll, cutting through the lines, playing balls through, weaving past players, you know, being more direct.

11:22Mathis Tell, honestly, man, I don't care what... I get plenty of comments when I sort of stick up for Mathis Tell, people saying that, like, he's crap. And he isn't, man. Like, he's quality. He's a good young... Yeah, he's not perfect. He's not perfect. But I think what shines through for me from Mathis Tell is he is one of, I think, honestly, I think he's one of the few players in this squad that is confident, who believes in himself. And I actually think has a level of self-respect that he doesn't let things get as bad as they do. Because as much as we can blame a lot of this on the manager, I think the manager does deserve a lot of the blame for the fortunes of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club right now.

12:08At least in the, as I say, in the direct, what happens on pitch frame of things, right? I think a lot of these players are too used to losing, are too happy to down tools. I don't care what people say, man. I still reflect on, he's a very talented player. I think Mickey Van der Ven's actions are disgraceful. I think Pedro Porro, always getting into one with fans now. Always, because he was up there in the front. Just get over it, lads. I'm sorry, get over it. I'm not having the world fair enough. No, it's nonsense, man. It's absolute nonsense that they're going up to fans, offering them out and stuff.

12:49It's stupid. I thought Van der Ven was awful yesterday as well, to be honest with you. To give him the captaincy after he's just had a Barney with the fans, I think is a bizarre decision from Thomas Frank, if I'm honest. Like, you can maybe twist it to say that he's tried to sort of say to him, look, let's build a bridge again. You're going to represent the club. You're going to be sort of, you know, whatever, blah, blah, blah. I just, I think it's validating piss-ball behaviour, if I'm honest. A lot of people can say what they want, but then, you know, or if someone says something to you, but then it's not two blokes down the pub.

13:27Like, it's a professional, like, sportsman doing his job. Yeah, right. Some morons shouted your crap or something. That is literally part of the job. Oh, you're excusing abuse. Come on, man. Like, come on. You know, like, I just, you know, there's just a core of like players here that I think aren't focused, aren't really dedicated, aren't really bothered. I think Micky van der Ven personally is the sort of player that knows he's good enough to get a move to somebody, maybe somebody like Real Madrid come the end of the season. And fair enough to him, right? If that's what he feels. But I just don't, I don't, I think it's poor and it doesn't surprise me that Spurs are in the sort of mess that they're in now.

14:17because on us, if we're not giving players like Mickey van der Ven, who, whatever I want to complain about him, he's a brilliant player. He's a fantastic player. I don't think he's quite as good as a lot of people make out, like defensively speaking. I think his physicality gets him out of quite a lot of trouble a lot of the time. I do, and I'm not revising history. I've always said that about Mickey van der Ven. But whatever it is, he is freakish as an athlete and that will take him a long way. But it's a damning indictment on the club that we can't sell more of a vision to more of these players that can inspire them a bit more, that can make them feel like they want to, you know, try and achieve something here.

15:02And, you know, it's been said here in the comments before, maybe winning that Europa League was for them the pinnacle. Maybe a lot of them thought, well, I'm not going to do much. Someone like Mickey van der Ven, right? the fact he's straight into an interview of Gary Neville this year. Maybe in his head is, that's as good as it gets at Tottenham. I've won the Europa League, I've done that, onto my next adventure. And, you know, maybe that's a bitter pill for us to swallow right now. Maybe we are back to being that sort of club again, the club that was having Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane, Teddy Sheringham, Michael Carrick, all these sorts of players poached from us.

15:41Luka Modric, Gareth Bale. you know maybe we're back in that place that that might be something we have to swallow for a few years right fine you know but that's what happens there is a food chain in football but again I just I don't I don't think that it needs to be as bad and as toxic as it is right now um sort of lost my chain of thought a bit I'm a bit all over the place because I just feel like I feel quite emotional I do feel quite emotional I love the FA Cup I did have a probably quite a naive feeling going into this one that the FA Cup might represent something of a sanctuary for the players, for Frank, for the club.

16:20That yes, Villa are really good, but maybe their sights would be set on the Premier League.

16:28Maybe, you know, this just might be as the Europa League was for Ange Postacoglu last year. Maybe this will be the sort of the little thing that we can, the little light in our season, if you like. right? The little thing that we can enjoy.

16:44And I would love to see as I like, I do love the FA Cup, might be a bit gamony and all that sort of stuff, but I do kind of buy into the, I'm just about old enough. What I will say about the FA Cup is I'm just about old enough to still really remember the FA Cup being something of an event, if you get what I mean, like not quite the same as it was in like Midas Day sort of thing, but still growing up 90s to sort of like the early to mid part of the noughties when the Champions League like really amped up, when the sort of drama of the Champions League really, really started to build up and the top four became the big focus in the Premier League and everything.

17:21Up until that point, the FA Cup was still seen as like something quite big and I would say like as a kid funnily enough like I just I always used to imagine like so say if I was having like a hard time or if I was like not particularly happy or something I remember this quite vividly being like a kid seven eight nine years old or something I would just try and imagine Spurs winning an FA Cup I know that sounds so bobbins but that was one of those things I always used to think about is I'd be so I'd love to see Spurs win an FA Cup and I felt that ever since they have won one in my lifetime but honestly as I say I don't remember it you know I was four five years old when they did um like I say I think I've got like a vague memory of my dad being happy about it but memory plays tricks on you do you know I mean like you can invent memories and stuff I don't know yeah I don't remember it I don't remember the emotional beats of Spurs winning an FA Cup let's say that and I really would like to see us have done it but we haven't.

18:24We've bowed out again in pretty meek fashion. The players, yeah, I mean, the sort of, yeah, I've got back to my train of thought. The point I was trying to make is that I do think too many of these players are too settled in losing. I think too many of them, like I say, look, Mickey van der Ven got my ire because like I say, I think there's a part of him that's just like, this isn't going to be my problem for much longer, you know? And I think when you've got that little kind of, when you've got that little, I think, like, I don't know, professional pride, I don't think it will get you a long way at a big club.

19:04Eden Hazard was a brilliant player for Chelsea. But in Chelsea's fallow seasons, in their off seasons, you can look back, people will eulogise about Eden Hazard and all this sort of thing. Eden Hazard had ranked seasons for Chelsea. When Chelsea were not doing very well, he didn't pull through. He would always down tools. And Hazard was always brilliant when Chelsea were brilliant, but would not be that arsed. He was never somebody who was going to fight through brick walls, run through brick walls, whatever, for them. But was still a magnificent player, right? Hazard then goes to Real Madrid and proves that if you don't have a certain mentality, you're not going to go far.

19:48He literally ended up being one of Real Madrid's worst ever high-profile signings ever. And I'm not saying that's definitely the type of thing that happens to Mickey van der Ven, but I do think this stuff matters, right? Harry Kane has year after year after year performed to such an elite level with some of the most boggy Tottenham teams I've ever seen. Disgusting. Spurs finished probably way... I think the mental thing I will say is I always appreciated how good Harry Kane was. in the years that followed, I just think it should show just how Spurs are without him. It should show the level he was at.

20:36That him and Son, to be fair, can't forget Sonny, that the level that those two would produce to just consistently drag us to probably unearned positions is quite mad. But that's what a top mentality will do for you. And I think so few of these players have it. I do think, though, I do think Mathis Tell is one of those players that has a great mentality. I think he's a very confident footballer. Yes, I don't think he's perfect. I think he makes mistakes. I think he's raw. He's what, 19 years old? Do you know what I mean? Is he? He might be 20. Let me just double check that now because I'm just interested for my own.

21:1620 years old. he's 20 years old he's raw he doesn't always get it right but I do think he's a player that cares I think he genuinely cares I think he cares about I think he's got a level of professional pride I think he's got confidence I think he wants to win I think he wants to do well for Tottenham I think it would be an absolute travesty if we let him go out on loan this year because this manager deems that something that we should be doing he's to me he's one of the few bright sparks in all of this that we do right now. Two seconds. Your little one grew three inches overnight. Adorable. Also, expensive.

They say you should learn something new every day, like how you should only drink Jägermeister at zero degrees Fahrenheit, ice cold, like those frozen cavemen they find, which makes you wonder, what would a caveman think of Jägermeister?

22:33Well, if you served it warm, he'd probably throw it in your face, say, Oonga Boonga, and storm off, and nobody wants that. So drink it cold or not at all. Jägermeister, damn, that's cold. Drink responsibly, The Jägermeister Liqueur, 35 % alcohol by volume. Imported by Masked Jägermeister, U.S., White Plains, New York. This is your fix. I am your host, Stassi Schroeder. Welcome to Tell Me Lies, the official podcast. What's the most unhinged thing of season three? Steven, because he's so evil. I do think he is misunderstood. You see everyone face consequences. It's intoxicating. The writers just know how to trick you.

23:11There's always a twist in this show. Tell Me Lies, the official podcast January 6th, and stream the new season of Tell Me Lies January 13th on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. You had Shavi Siemens, who I think, again, is quite raw. I think we've spent a premium on him. But again, I think you can see that there's just, I think there's, I'm not going to pretend. I do think his career to date has been somewhat disappointing, should we say, his Tottenham career. He's not been quite at the level I was hoping he would be when we signed him. When we signed him, I was thinking game-changing, game-changing signing.

23:56Whatever Frank does, whatever the manager does. For example, my point is going back to Harry Kane, you plonk him in any team in world football. Doesn't matter how the manager plays, doesn't matter what the fans are, this, that, or the other. You plonk Harry Kane into any team in world football, he's going to perform. He's going to be unbelievable for you. I probably need to stop comparing people to Harry Kane because he is genuinely one of the greatest footballers of all time. I feel quite confident in saying that. But Xavi Siemens, I thought at least, was going to be one of those players that, you know, you sort of chuck into this Spurs team, and we were going to see straight away, wow, you know, this is the difference he makes.

24:33I don't think he has been quite that. I think a lot of that is on the manager. I think a lot of that is the way in which Frank wants to play him, sticks him out on the left, or he seems so loathe to put him through the middle where he is quite clearly his most effective. But again, he's always positive, especially when he's not playing to the script, as we saw yesterday. he's positive he's looking forwards he's trying to make things happen we need a bit more of that energy um i guess the biggest piece to all of this and this is something that we i will continue to talk about and talk about and talk about maybe forever who knows who knows if we're ever going to be sold but here we are sat halfway through january again i was talking to paul o 'keefe at the tail end of the week about it.

25:33You can understand, you know, we've identified Antoine Semenyo early on in the window. And you can understand him going to Manchester City over us. You know, we sort of showed our intent early. And then City, Liverpool, I think even Arsenal were sort of interested in him. And as soon as those names start coming into the conversation, chances are Spurs aren't going to get them. Fine, fair enough. You just have to, you know, you have to take that sometimes. That's the food chain in football. That's what happens. But where are the alternatives? You know? Apparently interested in Savinho, maybe interested in Mamouche, maybe Aklouche from Monaco again.

26:23But where's the action? What are we doing? What's going on? You know? We were promised that, like, this was different. This is an ownership model now that wants to do things differently, doesn't want to act like Daniel Levy, wants to bring success to Tottenham on the pitch. But we just see us doing the same old thing, don't we? We see us acting in the same old way. Other than, I guess, ironically, sticking by a manager. It's sort of become the meme now, hasn't it, that Daniel Levy would have sacked Thomas Frank by now. He might have done. He probably would have done. It's quite frustrating, isn't it, that the one thing they want to do different is stand by a manager and that manager happens to be Thomas Frank.

27:10Are they going to back him? You know, are they listening to the sort of concerns that a lot of people are sharing about what it is to back a manager that you don't really believe in? All that type of thing. I don't know.

27:27we um yeah we will have to see it i don't know man

27:37it just feels like this same conversation over and over and over again and i think it's part of it part of it is wanting to acknowledge i think there's there's a certain ego thing doing this where you want to make sure you've covered all bases because you know you put anything out on the internet people are only going to be too happy to say you said this but you didn't say that bit you know the old sort of the the meme about the internet's the only place where you can say i like waffles and people will say why don't you like toast it's it's you know it's that type of thing so i think there is this sort of like self-preservation this sort of ego about it to say, no, no, I have considered that part.

28:24Don't worry. Don't worry. I have just considered that if we sack Thomas Frank right now, that's not going to be the be-all and end-all. There's still going to be problems here, you know? But it feels like at least as fans, you have the slightest bit more control to get a manager sacked if you don't like him, you know? and you're not going to make a board sell up, are you? You're not going to say, we don't like you doing this. We don't, like we're actually, you know, the supporters trust. I'm not digging them out, I'm just saying, but they took their statement to the board to raise a few concerns and all that type of thing.

29:08And it's good of them to do that. That's their sort of function. They are supposed to be the sort of the voice of the fan base and all that type of thing. So good on them for being proactive and doing that. a lot of people would disagree but you know I you know I think fair enough people speaking up to institutions and all that type of thing fine but you know ultimately the people the higher-ups in the club are going to be like right nice one they've given us this manifesto of things they want great but it's my club I own it yeah I'm talking about in terms of a material possession I own it I do what I want I'm not going to be told by this trust that you know just give them a statement oh yeah we considered everything that you're thinking about and whatever you know you're not you're not really going to shift the the you know shift the dial push the needle push the envelope whatever it is with a board just with strong words it's got to take action hasn't it It's got to take the stadium being empty bit by bit, bit by bit.

30:15The stadium seems like it is, you know, less full. I keep getting emails all the time now being like, General Sale now, you can bring up to four people. Like, I think it was Man City and Newcastle. You can bring up to four guests on General Sale. That genuinely, that was pretty much unheard of for the past decade, really. Like it's been genuinely really hard to get Spurs tickets a lot of the time. Now, not so much. The difficulty in getting Spurs tickets now is just seeing if you've got enough disposable income to spend on that useless rabble. Because it ain't cheap, is it? Are they going to do that?

30:57Are they going to address that? Probably not. yeah i'm sure the the basic like economics are everything is everything is guaranteed by a say a secured income which is gate receipts isn't it which you know they're not going to suddenly halve unless unless literally the stadium starts being more than half empty on a regular basis i guess then they're going to need to do something but that's the only way that will happen but back to the original point half a stadium yesterday was singing you're getting sacked in the morning to thomas frank and that was villa fans and spurs fans singing that to him you know i really unless a board is particularly negligent i don't think they can let that continue and as i say he's getting gnarky in press conferences he's saying you know he's thinking the other day, I'd like to see half of these fans or you journalists manage a club like Tottenham Hotspur.

31:57What? Do you know what I mean? Like, it's your job fella. You know, do I have to rabbit the millions of pounds line again? Millionaire. Like, that's your job. And you'll pay a handsome sum to do it. What? oh, bloke in pub or on social media, whatever it is he said, fans in the pubs or on the social media or something, all blurs into one with him. But all right, great. So your job's difficult. Well done, you know? I don't know. To me, it's just a redundant and irritating thing to say. So it already gets people's backs up. He spoke about like my, you know, my intelligence level is above average.

32:48I know this, you know, making out like it's his crossed bear that like you know he's so smart that you know he sees things in a way that other people don't see things but it's funny that he's not smart enough to see that you know when say your fortunes aren't that good at the club you know when things aren't going that well maybe not always talking about like how poor the squad is or talking about like calling out the fans all the time all that type of thing you know maybe that maybe that's not the best idea you know Do your vast banks of intelligence stretch to that pretty simple computation?

33:26You know? I know it sounds churlish, but I think it's a pretty apt point, isn't it? If you're going to sit up and self-aggrandize and go on about how clever you are, then maybe stop acting like such a bloody idiot doing the job. Like, you know? And again, I know people will say it's a mistake in this and that. and people have gotten, you know, people are, you know, whatever, overblowing it and stuff. But when you're a guy that self-aggrandises and talks about his attention to detail, when you're walking out on the picture of an Arsenal Cup, it just says the complete opposite thing. We can pretend that optics mean nothing.

34:07And I know people hate the word optics. It's used in politics all the time and whatever, like social politics and all that type of stuff. but it means something of course just because we give something a name now in the like the 2020s doesn't mean that it's some new fandangled woke concept it's just giving a name to something that's always existed you know people going on about people going on about ed milliband what 15 years ago for eating a bacon sandwich in a weird way pulling a weird face for doing it people like that's that's just not a prime minister there's something that just clicks in people's heads that is like, it's not a prime minister, you know?

34:46Jeremy Corbyn with his tweed suit and his top button undone and all that type of thing. There's a large percentage of people in this country that will say, that's just not a prime minister. You know, David Cameron said to him, didn't he, don't rip your top button and sing the national anthem and all that sort of nonsense, right? You know, but to a lot of people, it's just, these things are optics, aren't they? And the optics of Thomas Frank are a man that just seems so out of tune with the club that he is managing, who can sit there and whiffle on about being intelligent, can whiffle on about his attention to detail, but through his actions shows the complete opposite on such a consistent basis.

35:25There's a lot of talk now that we want to get rid of him, get him out, get him gone. Again, I feel, yeah, that is... On an emotional level, I want to see that. on a more, say, like practical, rational, objective plane, I guess. I feel that that's probably the right decision. The nagging concern throughout all of this for me is who steps in? Who steps in now? Ryan Mason's just had a horror of a half season with West Brom. He's gone. You'd imagine he'd be pretty high up the list for people that they would get in on an interim basis.

36:07I guess he at least understands the ethos of the club and all that sort of thing a bit more. But, you know, is that enough? Is that enough for us? Like, is that the sort of thing that we want? I don't know. Is... I mean, I don't even want to... Honestly, and I know a lot of you say it, but Harry Redknapp just... Come on, man. Blake's been out of the game for a decade. like you know he's coming to the press now being like i do it for free and come on man you know

36:43i just i don't think it's the right thing robbie keen is somebody that people have spoken about a lot you know it's quite a step up isn't it quite a step up unless unless you've got robbie keenan as the vibes man and then you have somebody alongside does cochran stay on i don't know Is Cochran part of the problem? I don't know. Who knows? He's very, very highly thought of throughout the game. Does Cochran step in if Thomas Frank gets sacked? You know?

37:16He's a very, very highly regarded coach. A lot of people are sort of digging him out because he's our attacking coach and we're not seeing much in the way of attacking patterns and all that type of thing. um i don't know you know i don't know enough who steps in who comes in who takes over maricio pochettino in the summer maybe paul o 'keefe doesn't seem as uh i mean he you know he on a personal level doesn't feel like it would be the right idea to go back but he also reckons that there's with levy gone there's not enough people at the club who uh who would want pochettino back So, you know, maybe that.

38:00I don't know. Who comes in? Does Julian Nagelsmann want to manage Spurs? I'm not so sure. I don't know right now.

38:14Big Y says, I'm a bit shocked he's still here, if I'm honest. Ryan Mason is crap, but he would at least let us play. Yeah. Like I say, you know, he does know the club. He knows the standards that are expected and all that type of thing. It's just whether or not he is able to, I guess, inspire a group of players who seem to be pretty short on confidence, pretty low on love for the club, pretty low on a sense of clear direction for the club or anything like that. I just, I personally don't know if Mason is the guy that can step into this situation right now and expect to get much. Hacker CPS says, why did we play so much better second half?

39:02Really don't understand what happened there. Because I honestly think, I genuinely think that they just sort of ignored Frank a bit. Honestly, you know, that seems to me to be like the Occam's razor behind all this, that he just... Yeah, you know, I don't know.

39:24Matt W says sometimes Zaga sometimes cider he says does I not drink oh he drinks Simon Rush hello mate says morning Jack sorry state of affairs that an improved 20 minutes is what we're being asked to cling on to that's it isn't it Danny Kelly was talking about this on view from the lane the other day I think it was Elias Burt they had on there one of the new lads in the sort of in the in the roster. Is that what you call it? I don't know, whatever. Roster feels like one of those words that I say and people are like, that's the American word for it. Like sometimes on here, I will say field, how they did on the field of play or something like that.

40:04People say, it's the pitch. It's the pitch. All right. Do you know what I mean?

40:12Elias Burke was sort of saying, you know, it's a, of the Bournemouth game, the opening stages of the first half were quite good for Spurs. So there's some bit of hope. And Danny Kelly was, you know, kind of like, oh, is that where we're at now? You know, is that kind of what we're clinging on to? Decent spell in the first half. Good Lord. But that is what it feels like, doesn't it? I think it was a friend of the show, Quizmaster Foynes, on Twitter who said, you know, I'm sick of seeing Spurs. Basically, I'm just going to sort of, you know, he basically said, I'm sick of Spurs being crap. I'm sick of us just playing well for 20 minutes and then just sort of sacking off a game.

41:00He says, I can't, you know, in the past five years, I can't really remember many performances at all where we've actually just been really good for the whole game. And that's pretty true, isn't it? I don't think that's a massively objectionable thing to say.

41:19Andrew Elliott says, when you've lost Windy, it's all over. That's it, isn't it? Referring to Windy's statement of earlier. Forget the away fans, right? It's Windy. Windy, he's the man that can bring down mountains at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. Ryan Andrew says, I'm stuck between desperately wanting Frank gone and knowing that we won't hire anyone we actually want for the long term. But can we afford to stick with Frank to the summer? I'm unsure now. Exactly that, exactly that.

41:57I think, you know, really, I think head and heart say we can't stick with Frank. I don't think we can stick with this.

42:09there was some i can't remember what it i mean it might have been indy carlier actually now i say this but i'm pretty sure i saw somebody today say that one of the points of consternation for uh getting rid of frank is a him and his backroom staff basically in total it will cost us like 20 mil to get rid of thomas frank

42:31it's quite mad isn't it i do find it quite mad that in their line of work right like if you you can you can as like as as an individual you can get made redundant right for any job because something reshows it's happened to me you know it's happened to me a couple of times in my in my career i work around sort of like media adjacent digital media stuff right and in the media industry it's always okay right well money's running a bit thin at the moment so we'll just sweep off a few bits of the workforce or something and then we'll get them back later on different contracts or that type of thing right but they will basically just tell you you know one month yeah sos mate um you're gonna get made redundant so if you've you know if you've worked here for a year and a bit you don't really get owed anything you get whatever about a month's salary or something and i think you maybe get another month's salary for every year you've worked over two years three years or something like that so an average ordinary person will get a pittance really when you've when you've basically had your life torn up mortgage to pay various other bills to pay, mouths to feed, all that type of stuff.

43:52They can just say, nap, there you go. There's£3 ,000. Have fun. Good luck. Pat on the back. Thanks for the work kind of thing, right? But if you're a Premier League manager and you're abject at your job, and he is, I'm sorry, he's abject. He's terrible. He's failed on all fronts. I was sort of simping for him at the start because my whole thing was, well, he's going to raise the floor at least. He's going to take us to, you know, get us back to being a sort of top eight team and all that. He's just completely failed. We're playing this anti-negative hideous football and it's not even successful.

44:35It's not even working. I'm going all high pitched again.

44:43You know, and he's going to get millions of pounds for that. oh, you know, you know, and I've said something like this on here before, and people said it's never, people should be duly compensated. Oh, come off it, man. Like, yes, they should be, but, you know, like, whatever.

45:07People's takes on the internet are wild, aren't they? Have you just realised that?

45:16Big Y says, all it takes is one of the promoted teams next season to be somewhat competent, and next year could be it. I mean, we've got Richarlison's out now, innit? Like, Richarlison's done his hammy. I don't know how bad a thing that is. Did somebody else get injured yesterday? I'm not sure. Yeah, add Richarlison. I mean, I guess Solanke. Solanke is back in the mix. That was a moment, wasn't it? Like, seeing Solanke on the side of the pitch coming on. Hang on, what's going on here? Interesting.

45:51Bingei says, football is simple and English is all about passion, desire, show effing heart. What the F are we doing, FFS? Yeah. He follows it up by saying, what the F are we doing, seriously? yeah, it's a fair point to ask because it is wild. And yes, things change. Football's cyclical. I get all that. You cannot deny, though, that it is a pretty painful, painful and stark comparison to make that when Spurs were in a Champions League final, Aston Villa, we're in the championship.

47:48And how things have changed in that time, haven't they? Villa have spent loads of money, though. Villa have been ambitious. They've spent loads of money. They brought in a really good manager. And they've spent loads of money. They have. Can't get around it. I'm not saying that as a judgment. They've been ambitious. They've done. they've realized what they need to do in order to establish themselves as a top team again. And they've done that. Whereas Spurs have coasted on the talents of Son Heung-min and Harry Kane and a few others, but mostly those two. They've coasted on that, coasted on their ability and have not bothered to, you know, really replace them or anything like that.

48:29So, you know, it's...

48:38I'm just saying this, I just say the same stuff all the time, you know, I just find out, I'm just like, just get someone new in, you know, not me, I don't mean new instead of me, I'm saying, get someone new in charge, let's breathe a bit of life into this whole thing, you know, Roy Porteous says, the moment where you realise the success, Russian kids comparisons to the Lewis children has hit a bit too true. Stuck at sea, wondering whether the anchor can get them home. Yeah. Does feel that way, doesn't it? Definitely feels that way. The Tottenham says, unfortunately, the season is pretty much done now.

49:19As a season ticket holder, it's going to be hard to get up for the games remaining. Five months. I don't know how you do it. Honestly, I don't know how you do it. I'm always like I'm always a bit of a rabble rouser and I shouldn't be because it feels a bit unfair but I'm always saying to like my friends receiving tickets you know what do you think about that are you going to do it are you going to stay on are you going to stay on and they say yeah ooh I'm more loyal than you are ooh well done don't know how you do it honestly don't know how you do it Beat Plate says morning Jack I know it's a low bar but at least the energy in the second half gave me something to invest in.

50:00Should be a minimum requirement at home matches. Yeah, it should be. Like, as it's been mentioned, beat plate. It's a fair point, but it is quite sad that we're reduced to that, isn't it now? A spell in the second half where it feels like the players weren't really sticking to the manager's script. And then the manager went and substituted a load of them. Changed it all around. Oh, God. He's just unbearable. Simon Rush also says, we just need to look at what's happening to West Ham as a cautionary tale. Big, shiny stadium, cash coming in, but a series of bad appointments and bad signings, and you're in trouble.

50:37Yep. Isla Lilywhite, oh God, is this true? A worse win rate than Juan de Ramos. Trying to change a culture none of us want changing, and a clear lack of respect for him from most of the players. There's nothing left to play for. Please sack him. just for vibes if nothing else I genuinely take an academy coach for the rest of the season yeah like I think you are bang on there I love Lily White mate like you know it is that and it is I don't know I think the mask slips with him a bit with that sort of the self aggrandisement of well the great unwashed want this swashbuckling football but I know what's best I know what's best is not closing down attackers outside the box.

51:29And quite an interesting thing, Jay Harris on, you know, I'll probably be owning them royalty soon, but Jay Harris on view from the lane, who used to be Brentford's correspondent as well, was talking about the fact that that was a thing that happened at Brentford for a fair bit, conceding goals from long shots. And it led to a lot of people questioning Rare as a goalkeeper.

51:55I still think, you know, I still think Vicario is a bit suspect, to be honest. But, yeah, you know, what is it? Why does Thomas Frank not like attackers being closed down outside the box? That doesn't feel very solid defensively, does it? Does it, Thomas? I don't know. Is Grease B said, the players have had enough after the first half. We looked so much better when the players did their own thing. Yeah, agree.

52:25the tottenham also says a damning indictment that aston villa a team that was championship when potts was here yep has now come up to our ground and dictated around two-thirds of a game we're playing in moments not a system that's banging hacker cps says he thinks tell looked leggy overworked maybe is greasby also says tell is one of the only players who has the mentality to try and pull out of this. I agree. I genuinely agree. I know I said that in the first place, but I agree unsurprisingly. Roy Portia says, it's absolutely astounding there's not even a whiff of him being under any pressure out of the press.

53:10It does feel that way, doesn't it? I do wonder if that's going to change. I'm seeing a few like, it's all very, what I will say is it's all very like trust me bro stuff at the moment, but I am seeing a few odd tweets here and there from some of the like loosely aligned ITK type accounts being like, I hope what I'm hearing is true. I've seen a few of those. So yeah, we'll see.

53:38Bingot says, have you seen Van Der Ven's face after the match interview? His spirit is gone from this club. Thanks to the board and Frank's BS. Yeah. Look, yeah, I do, you know, it's half of one, six a dozen of another, isn't it? Wait, hang on. Six of one, half a dozen of another. I've said a thing wrong. I've said a thing wrong on the internet. Bloody hell.

54:12I think with end of end, I think there's got to be a level of, like, personal accountability there as well. just saying like you know um and i do i do i do i do i do buy into the theory that he maybe just feels a bit checked out now we won the europa league and can't really be asked for the fight of spurs anymore fine but you know i think yeah i look thomas frank the boards definitely don't help um do i think that mickey van derven maybe has ideas above his station just a little bit as well yes I do I do I think he's going to be staggered when the white hankies start getting flown at the burner bow and think oh god I would go back to having a couple of knuckle draggers shouting your crap from the sidelines you know Mashiner Joe says Porro acts that way because he knows security guards are there and no fans are going to actually punch him um he wouldn't do that stuff in certain other countries like where i'm from it's all an act

55:27so i'm not sure entirely where you're from mashing a joe but in the uk we call that the hold me back hold me back mentality you'll often see that like in town centers up and down the up and down the country i mean nobody goes out anymore do they nobody can be bothered but back in the day when people used to go out to pubs and clubs and all that type of thing getting a bit of you know aggro someone bumped into me at the bar you're a knob you're a wanker and they sort of shout at each other and then one of them will be there like with all his mates being like let me get at you let me get at you knowing that his mates are going to stop him and you know hold me back that type of thing whatever um it does feel a little bit like that i do feel like poro's quite aggy though i feel like you know i feel like if somebody came up to him in the street you know say he's gone for a nice gales cappuccino or something like that in one of the swankier parts of town right and somebody came up to you you you were no good i feel like poro would still switch i'm not gonna lie still feel like he'd give you a slap you know if he's with his family and stuff but you know he's an athlete he's a pretty dench lad you know he's don't think he's gonna mess about um but i know what you're saying i get what you're saying james nicholson said i completely agree with the supporters trust stating how fast standards have fallen we could do with being rubbish if we had a young and exciting team where you could see signs of progress yeah agree

57:03big why says for what it's worth i thought xavi was amazing yesterday yep yeah i Like, you know, let's give him that. Let's say he was amazing. I don't need to split hairs over that. I thought he was very good. So, yeah, fine. Stel Morrison, hello, mate, says, we're playing and getting beaten by a team who were relegated in recent memory and were on the floor before Emery came in. Now they're in the title race and showing us up. The difference, the manager. Yeah, the manager is a big part of it. They have spent a lot of money. I'm just saying they've spent a lot of money and they've been ambitious with their spending as well.

57:42And they've spent to a clear plan. Look at the sort of signings that they have. A lot of their players are very direct, very physical, very technically sound players. When I watch Villa, they remind me of us a few years back. Bastards all over the pitch that can play football. They knock it about so nicely. they play direct exciting impactful football and then they've actually inspired I think they've done what we did a few years ago as well by taking certain other players up a level or two I think Matty Cash has gone from being a bit of a you know an all right decent I know we hate him because of their sort of history with him and stuff like that but he's gone from being like an all right player to actually really good I think playing like levels above himself because he's playing within a clear settled system with a clear strategy which is attack be direct be up in people's faces yeah so a lot of that comes from the manager i know what you mean but they've spent a lot of money as well master nejo says hazard is the worst signing in real madrid's history he's up there isn't he i don't you know i don't have a full rundown and tony casano that was another big flop back in the day wasn't it big like italian striker highly lauded and then just did absolutely nothing at madrid i think that was you know whatever um

59:13uh so there's somebody like so we'll see how much this uh this means but somebody called Vindaloo with an Arsenal badge as their advocate. I'm just reading this out merely for fun, for anybody else to enjoy. It says, I work in stocks, Forex commodities market. And what I'm seeing this morning is that you've got bigger problems ahead. And it isn't the managers or the team. If the governing body executes, you'll have a new meltdown to deal with and then your owners will never sell. there we go I'm sure we'll see more about that in due course if that happens to be the case Vindaloo if you care to elaborate any more that would be interesting but I'll take you on the on an actual yes you have an Arsenal Avi yes it is Sunday morning and for some reason you're watching a live stream of a Tottenham fan talking about our FA Cup fixture against Daston Villa fine you know that's all right but if this happens to be the case I would be interesting to uh to know what it is any more specifics you can give us about what this uh big issue ahead is um Hacker CPS says I'm afraid of what Frank does to Voscovic to be quite honest I mean I've just you just gotta hope that Voscovic is just elite enough that it doesn't really matter right I don't know

1:00:45Mashin Joe is quite interesting says I've said many times that it's a good thing that Vescovich has gone to Germany he would have learned nothing from Frank atmosphere isn't good at Spurs right now do you know what I mean it does feel that way a bit it's really worthwhile listening to have a listen to the lab not like he needs any more promoing but Flav's so Flav's sort of companion pod to the fighting cock the lab where you know it's a bit less you know it's a bit less of the comedy stuff that you get on the fighting cock and it's more flav you know talking about football in a in a more serious fashion really good listening he consistently has really really good guests on there some really informative conversations that they have um and he spoke to the coach harry brooks uh about vuscovic and you know they had a big talk about all the you know the ins and outs of of him as a player as a person all that type of thing it's really really good listen and it's it's a fairly evergreen pod you know it's not anchored to any particular fixture or any time or anything like that it's just a general overview of luka viscovic so it's really worth listening to and i can't remember if they raised on that or if it's just a general point i've heard but i think the noise is coming out of his family right now are they don't want him to come back to Spurs right now not I don't think it's any real I mean that's not what's been said publicly anyway but it doesn't feel like a reflection on Tottenham per se it's more just that he is doing really well in Germany he's really settled there I think his family lived there his brother plays for the club um his brother I think his brother's been banned for drugs or something like that um and he's gonna come back soon and they want to play together and all that type of thing whatever you know um i just think he's settled he's young enough where you know he's gonna you know keep growing in stature and yeah like you say what's the point of forcing it in maybe mickey van der ven forces a move this summer though and he gets sold and then we do have a space you know alongside christian romero for vizcovich to slot in maybe that's what happens you know ricochet pig um says late checking in and maybe already addressed looked like frank was using the reds on the tactics board still need to check but worse than cupgate if the case i think you've been a bit facetious though aren't you sir but you know well uh we'll be on the case let's get the let's get the supporters trust to uh to get back in touch, eh?

1:03:24Ali Jamison said, who's the weird gooner wasting his, wasting his access weekend on a Spurs stream? And then HackCPS has said, Vinay likes to keep his eye on the socials. Got to keep up with the pulse of the fans. Good banter was had by all. I like that. I'm not, that's funny. um oh dear Alex Paramore says I cannot fathom how he's still here it's utter negligence him and Langan need to go now hang on Collinius Cornius says get Capello in bloody hell don't think that's gonna mate if people are not happy with like the murder ball from from Thomas Frank you know you know I don't think that's going to happen, is it?

1:04:18Oh, here's a good one. Simon Rashford said, I remember when Jose was manager, Tom Foynes said of him, he's not 100 % of the problem, but he's 0 % of the solution. That is the case with Thomas Frank. That is banging. That is really, really good. That is really, really good. Another good one from Thomas Foynes back in the day was when we sacked Maurizio Pochettino, he did his own club statement, which was Tottenham Hotspur would like to thank Maurizio Pochettino for turning us into the sort of club that feels emboldened enough to sack Maurizio Pochettino, which again was pretty apt, wasn't it? Joseph G says, second half was the final nail.

1:04:58It's clearly not a problem with the players. The French boys plus Xavi have quality when given freedom. The manager is the problem. I want to find, there was a, where is it? Harry Brooks did a really good tweet around this theme. Where is it? Okay, yeah, here we go. Tell, played for Bayern Munich at 16. France under 21 captain, despite all the generational talent around him. Kala Mawani, played in a World Cup final, scored goals for Juve last season, cost PSG 100 million pounds. Xavi, cost 50 mil plus, starts for Holland, excelled in Bundesliga, Erdivisie, and came through at Barca and PSG. Odeber, constantly performs for France under 21, has performed very high levels in Major League Football before 20 years old.

1:05:50Grey, England under 21 international, 100 plus, I think, first team appearances before 20 years old. Palinia, Portuguese international, bought by Bayern Munich for 30 mil less than two years ago. He goes on. Poros starts for Spain. You know, Man City linked forward with Madrid. Van de Ven starts for Holland linked with Madrid. I could go on and on and on. These are not bad players at all. I think that is some worthwhile perspective. And I think that point that you make there about like the French lads in particular is very good. Because they do seem like a really talented bunch that are just completely stifled.

1:06:25Again, I know like we've told, Odebeer is one that draws a lot of ire. I think there are enough encouraging, exciting signs about him. to show that he is a talented player. His finish yesterday was lovely. I haven't even spoken about that. You know, it's been all misery and talking about Thomas Frank and the board and stuff, but his finish against them was absolutely sublime. It was really great. So, you know, very good. I don't know. Big Wise says, people asking for us to get Red Knapp don't seem to realise how dangerous our situation is right now. We're flirting with two years of relegation form.

1:06:59We cannot afford to be a charity for Red Knapp. I agree entirely with that, mate. I bang on

1:07:07Joseph Bradley says I don't think any manager can save us at this point from the board doesn't really matter who we have bloke from the pub or pep they still have to work with them Spurs feel so corporate since the new stadium yeah

1:07:25Iexer says Villa bought wisely with quality proven talent not young kids that come good in three to five years. Yeah. Maybe they did sign a few of those, but I don't know.

1:07:44It is, you know, I don't know. It's all going around in circles now. People are not happy. Players don't seem happy. Frank doesn't seem happy. Is there going to be a change? Are these cryptic kind of tweets that are surfacing at the moment? Saying I hope the things I'm hearing are true, come true. Are we going to get the flag picture on the corner point? Corner flag, there you go. I don't know. Stay tuned. Watch this space. We will have to see, won't we? But right now, I think we can say things are not good enough. Things are chaotic. There was a bloody riot, brawl, whatever it is, after the game again yesterday.

1:08:28It feels like there is never a dull moment at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. We can never catch a break. It doesn't feel like it's ever going to be quiet right now. And that is not good. That is not healthy. It's not where we want to be. So let's hope something can change. Don't really have much else to say other than enjoy the rest of your weekends. if you like ad-free pods patreon.com slash rtr pods if not fine whatever just support the pod with a like rating review all that type of stuff all appreciated be back in the week with more guests to talk to more interesting conversations come on you spurs i guess is that what we're doing now does that still work

Spurs are out of the FA Cup - a spirited fightback in the second half, likely against the manger's wishes, wasn't enough to see us overcome a Villa side now rapidly overtaking us. What a miserable affair. Time to go?
