In short

Tottenham Hotspur’s opening-day 3-0 win over Burnley, with a focus on Richarlison’s standout performance and the team’s overall attacking/defensive balance. The host also discusses what Spurs still lack (a true creative “number 10”/midfield spark) and how new signings could change things.

Guest backgrounds

No guests appear in the transcript. The episode is a solo host show with listener comments/messages read aloud.

Key claims

Richarlison’s form looks “Kane-esque” in all-around impact (hold-up, link play, vision, finishing), including a scissor-kick second goal. Kudus and Richarlison already look like a strong partnership. Spurs controlled Burnley well and deserved the clean sheet, though VAR/penalty decisions and a lack of creative breakthrough were noted. Thomas Frank has drilled the team for structure and marginal gains.

Notable examples

Richarlison’s scissor kick vs Burnley; Johnson’s goal; discussion of missing Kane/Son; mentions of potential arrivals (Eze, Savinho, Kulusevski) and players like Porro, van de Ven, Gray, Bergvall, Sarr, and Vicario.

2:23Johnson again, ole, ole. Johnson again, ole, ole. Johnson again, Johnson. Look, any excuse to sing that? Any excuse for a bit of that? But welcome back. Brand new season. I know I did the PSG game, but still new Premier League season. new look Tottenham Hotspur what a start what a start to everything wow where to begin talking about starts where do I begin on that one let's talk about the fact that Burnley all of last season I know it's a championship but still Burnley all of last season didn't concede I believe it is correct me if I'm wrong didn't concede more than one goal in a game last season in a league game and I was kind of I was slightly slightly concerned about how this one might go I wasn't I wasn't like terrified that we were going to lose or anything like that maybe they might have like snuck it or something like that but there was that slight bit of me that's like you know very very well organized defensive team we're lacking madison we're lacking that kind of creative spark kolesovsky's still out solanke's like half fit richarlison we don't really know how good or not he is so on and so forth right and i was thinking like i could i could see this being quite a quite a difficult fixture for us however wonderful i mean let's let's richarlison I am I will hold my hands up entirely entirely you know if he continues this form if he carries on with it wonderful like because he was he was standout standout brilliant against PSG the other night like standout brilliant and today obviously incredible incredible I mean like don't don't don't don't come for me on this right I'm saying this just in just in terms of the way he was playing I'm not making a comparison between the two of them I'm just saying right I'm just saying in terms of his presence his hold-up play his vision outside of the box his link-up play outside of the box and his finishing today it was Kane-esque that I'm just I'm just saying I'm just saying I'm not I'm not I'm not comparing him to where I am I'm literally doing that I'm not saying he's as good as Harry Kane I'm not saying he's gonna score as many goals as Harry Kane but what I'm saying is in terms of like a three let's see let's call it a 360 proposition right that performance today all over all around it right world class brilliant yes it's only Burnley blah blah blah whatever don't care about that we don't need to drag things down let's let's stick with the with the posse vibes shall we yes I'm 40 years old and I said posse vibes and what Tottenham just won 3-0 don't come for me right yes I'm calling Richarlison Harry Kane yes I'm saying posse vibes right and what are you gonna do write me some nasty comments on the internet impervious mate impervious what a goal that second goal what a goal Charlotte's literally lying there on the sofa and the goal's taking me by surprise so I shout obviously you know I shout what a goal when Richarlison's done his he scored a very he's a very similar one for Brazil in the last World Cup, I want to say.

6:27So it's not, what do you call it? It's not a bicycle kick. It's like a scissor kick, isn't it? When it's a goal like that. And he scored his scissor kick. But it's come out of nowhere because you see those crosses nine out of 10 games, right? You see them kind of just floated in. And just to see him contour himself, smack it in in that fashion. Unbelievable. I believe it took me by surprise, took the whole road by surprise, definitely took my wife by surprise.

7:02Just amazing. I mean, his first goal was brilliant as well, really well taken goal. But that second one, just that bit of magic, that bit of magic is nice. It's nice to have that, you know, to know that we've got that. Because that's what football's about. It's nice to have good moves and well taken goals. and like Johnson's goal. Johnson's goal was lovely. Again, ole ole, right? Lovely goal, lovely finish, run through cleanly, slotted it past the keeper, beautiful. But do you know what else? Football's quite exciting, isn't it? And when somebody like smacks one from 35 yards or someone contorts their whole body in that fashion and slaps a scissor kick into the back of the net, it's exciting it's exciting to like shout and celebrate a goal like that and not think is that was he a bit offside was you know

8:01can we say as well I've said in the description to this obviously we've lost Kane and Son and that was something I was very conscious about I mean Kane went a couple of years ago now I know but What I'm talking about is their partnership. I'll tell you how I got into this. Because I was reflecting on Nottingham Forest and Maranakis and all that stuff. All that mess of that. And there's that vengeful, nasty bit of me that's like, I hope we batter them this season. I really hope we get one over Forest this season. And then in the back of my head, I was like, but we don't have Kane and Son anymore.

8:39We don't have top-tier players like that anymore. How are we going to be battering teams? How are we going to be confidently going into matches thinking, we'll have these today? We could. We could for a while when we had Kane and Son, right? And you all know that. Everyone knows that. But seeing the way that Kudis... If Richarlison can stay fit, right him and kudos already look like they're on the same like on the same plane like maybe existentially but at least in a footballing sense they just some footballers just get each other right they just they just it's it is like an almost like weird psychic kind of thing i'm talking way back when i was a kid like you had sort of anderton sharingham were always a thing Keenan Berbatov obviously Kane and Sonny and now like this Kudus Richarnason they just seem to get each other straight away Kudus

9:4950 50, 55 mil or so we got him from West Ham before is looking like an absolute steal like what a player what a player and I hold my hands up I absolutely wasn't that bothered when we signed him um I wasn't you know I wasn't annoyed I wasn't like oh why have we spent all this money on this fella but I was kind of like yeah cool nice one you know he's he's been good for West Ham for a bit I've been a little bit sort of you know worried about his form sort of tailing off a bit uh at times at least for West Ham last year but still yeah whatever you know we'll uh we'll we'll stay kind of like positive about this but the guy is he's so much better so much better than I thought he was and obviously you know a lot of this depends on him maintaining this form and whatever but for now again I'm not going to catastrophize about what might happen what I'm going to do right now is focus on the last few games I've seen him play for Tottenham the last two competitive I mean do we call the Super Cup competitive I think it's a competitive game isn't it we can call it competitive game so the last two competitive fixtures he's played for Tottenham Hotspur he's been standout unbelievable got standing ovation as he came off the pitch today and rightly so what a wonderful player what a wonderful piece of business and 50 whatever it Ismil feels like an absolute snip, feels like an absolute bargain for a player of his quality because he just quite simply seems to be one of those players that has the lot.

11:36He, incredible pace, incredible strength, physicality, his just technical appreciation of football, his vision his just manipulation of space seeing kind of two steps ahead he just looks brilliant he looks like an just a wonderful wonderful player um and i thought like for the first 10 minutes first 10 minutes of the super cup final i was like he's trying a bit hard just tone it down a bit and uh some people like it's just what he's like it's just kind of that's kind of his thing so just go with it fine um and really that was only was only a few minutes anyway because for the most part of the super cup final he was absolutely phenomenal and today was just just wonderful absolutely wonderful um what i will say so i will say so as look i've given you 10 minutes there 10 minutes there of buoyant jubilant celebration i think the lads have done brilliantly i think the lads i think the lads have been great i think thomas frank in what a month couple of months or so has already got us looking well drilled has got us looking solid wonderful to get a clean sheet today absolutely delighted with that um i think we got a little bit lucky a couple of times um Burnley got through us a couple of times and had they a bit more quality they probably could have punished us I think we were incredibly lucky with the penalty decision I'm surprised VAR didn't give it them because Pedro Porro was not very smart in the way that he just sort of bundled the Burnley player over in the box no need to whatsoever I saw it in the replay and thought penalty straight away but didn't get didn't get given so the cartel strikes again um it's uh it's yeah it's uh it was wonderful the the the thing I did want to say is like as brilliant as we looked and everything I would say there was there was a period towards the end of the first half and maybe the very start of the second half um and I think this will be a recurrent theme until it is addressed and hopefully Eza will be coming in to sort it but I just think we we quite clearly lack that that that little kind of creative spark that number 10 or whoever in the uh in the midfield right that's that's the one thing and the player like the players performed valiantly brilliantly without it like like absolutely fantastically um but then we do need to take that one step back and i'm not saying it's only burnley but we are going to have far greater challenges this season ahead of us um there are going to be some very good teams that we're coming up against and there are going to be times when we are going to find it hard to get that breakthrough we can't always rely on like moments of brilliance like Richarlison has shown us today.

14:57And I do think there are times like when we have seen,

15:02Jack:I remarked on this after the Super Cup, and I sort of feel like the same today. I feel like Kudus and Richarlison are constantly creating pockets of space. They're constantly pulling opposition defences or midfield players, holding players, whatever, out of position, creating those pockets of space that I feel like James Madison would be exploiting or if we get him, Ezra can exploit. So this isn't a negative. This isn't saying we've done anything wrong because we quite simply don't have a player of that profile in the squad right now. But you can see that it's missing, is what I would say. However, despite that, we've played brilliantly today.

15:44Absolutely brilliantly. We played fantastically in the Super Cup. Do you know what I tell you? It's so annoying. it's so annoying how that Super Cup game got treated yeah I know we shipped two goals at the end but we shipped two goals to the best team in world football and one of them I mean both of their goals were just sensational goals I think it would be harsh to call either of those really a fault on Tottenham's part like they were both brilliant goals but for the most part we outplayed the best team in Europe but of course it all got wrapped up in like Spursy and all this type of thing Jamie O 'Hara, Jamie O 'Hara going on Sky Sports afterwards, talking about our mentality and all this.

16:28Give over, mate. Like, do you know what I mean? So I don't think the PSG game was anything to do with that. And I don't think there was anything today that would suggest the mentality was anything other than let's go and attack and let's go and win. Frank clearly sent us out to attack. Frank sent us to score as many goals as we could to keep testing that Burnley back line. The Burnley back line. The bloody Burnley back line. To see if that championship splendour can carry over into the Premier League. And it can't. It can't. So wonderful. Wonderful Tottenham. Wonderful performance. when I look at that so I mean take it as a positive like if you when you look at the foundation that we already have here if and when we add Eza, Savinho, Savinho, Savinho, no some people call him Savi, Savinho, Savinho and Eza into this side that's looking pretty dangerous.

19:50Jack:Wow. T-Pace has said Richie on his day. I'll take that. Yeah, that's good. John Benfield. Hello, mate. What a win. Solid, hardworking, organised quality from Richie and Kudus. Had a slightly weaker midfield, but it worked out exactly what we needed in these games. Freddie Nelson says, If we can get Savio on the left and Kudus on the right, then wow, up the spurs, all in capitals. Yes, Freddie, mate. Brian Park said, you could almost say Richie is like a new signing.

20:31You could indeed say that, Brian. And I know people don't like it when people use that expression, but it's kind of true, isn't it? It's kind of true. We saw a wonderful, wonderful player in Richarlison at Everton over many years. And he's never managed to quite translate that form into his Tottenham Hotspur career. However, however, long may this continue. I'm absolutely here for the Richarlison redemption arc. John W says, cracking sweatshirt, Jack. Thank you, John. For anybody listening to this, I'm wearing like the navy blue Tottenham Hotspur. It's got Tottenham Hotspur written in a sort of a serif font.

21:16It's almost like Times New Roman, not far off.

21:20Jack:with like the white and blue striped collar and cuffs, which, yeah, I think was released for a very short time on the club site last year. And I gobbled it up like a pig as soon as I saw it. Like the Spursy, like the white Spursy T-shirt as well. Gobbled it up like a little pig. It's just sometimes, you know, you see those bits of merch. They're only going to release that the once, inexplicably. I don't know why. I guess it's to maybe make them more coveted probably um but every now and again I've got just got to gobble them up um Benedict Fox Richie and Kudus will get all the all the applause but Sarman was everywhere involved in everything and mate he is I just it's gonna be a huge huge huge season for him I think I think Frank has seen him I think we can all say this can't we right Frank has obviously seen him and straight away thought, baller, I want him.

22:19I want him to form a really big and important part of this team. So yeah, very, very, very here for that. Very here for that with Saar because I love him. I think he's a wonderful player. It was Billy T said the other day on Twitter, remember when Saar on his debut dropped to clinic at AC Milan away and then Conte just dropped him from the team entirely. And it was so bizarre. It was such a weird thing to do. Because I remember that scene, this kid come in to make his, not just his Champions League debut, I'm pretty sure it was his Tottenham debut, wasn't it? And he was absolutely phenomenal in the San Siro.

23:02But yeah, whatever. We don't need to toil over yesterday because today is bright, right? We've got plenty to reap. Plenty to reap today and it's wonderful. Matty C says

23:17Jack:add Ezzer and Savino and a returning Kulisevsky to the equation and we could be in for a decent little season what are you saying Matty? what are you saying? we're saying the lot? is that where you're going? we're going with the lot I think you know we want to be want to be let's be conservative about this at least maybe the double I'll take the double wouldn't you?

23:43Joe August says Charlotte if he starts getting negative go into the room and slap I'm not getting negative we just won 3-0 what are you going on about Joe? what are you trying to do you home wrecker? right trying to medal I see what you're doing mate I see you I see you

24:01Jack:Dan Davenport says I think we should go get Donnarumma who is surplus to requirements at PSG he's already gone to Man City mate hasn't he? I'm pretty certain I'm pretty sure it's just uh they've got to sort out the formalities but it's done isn't it um Dan also says did you know Luis Enrique was interviewed for Spurs he said coach well I knew we were interested in him but he said didn't he the other day ahead of the uh Super Cup that we had interviewed him and funnily enough you know what I was like genuinely I was like disgusted at the shows you what I know do you know what I mean but I was disgusted at the idea of us bringing Luis Enrique in as Spurs manager I was like no don't want him here no not not interested in it boring archaic football La Masia nah don't want all that mate don't want all that Barca stuff here and he's probably you know he's up there with like the greatest managers in the game now isn't he like it's it's pretty unbelievable but would he have done that at Spurs would he have done that at Spurs at the time who knows maybe he'll come to us one day he felt like he was being very kind to us after that Super Cup wasn't he, very nice the way he was speaking about the club and about our performance and everything so I think he's keeping his he's keeping his options open on that one we're a we're a bigger club than PSG I'll say that, we are a bigger club than PSG so yeah I'll go with that Michael Anderson says missed Polina for most of that Archie looks nowhere near it so far I don't know if I agree with that I'm not so sure I agree with that like in terms of like yes I think Polina gives us something definitely

26:01the control we had against PSG and that's a team that's considered the reason why I don't want to be I don't want to be playing down the result today but I think people get what I mean when I compare Burnley and PSG and say it's two very different propositions right

26:20Jack:and I think the level of control we had against a team which contained the quality that PSG had was quite remarkable. And Pelinha, I know there are a few who don't like him, who are using some stats to show that he didn't actually have a very good game. I would say that anybody that was really watching that in an eye test sense or just watching it as anybody who really kind of gets football will see the impact that Pelinha had in that game.

26:57but I think you know if he's somebody if he's a player that's either struggles to maintain fitness consistently or just needs to get back up to match sharpness match fitness because he didn't play an awful lot for Bayern Munich last year I'm quite alright with Grae and Bergvau coming in for games like today because we kept a clean sheet didn't we and we played pretty well. The thing is, once we get like an Eza or somebody like that, I'd imagine that Eza would be taking

27:35Jack:Saar's role today in the number 10 position. And then you're going to have, you're going to choose from Bergwold, Saar and Gray for the midfield. You kind of feel like, what's his name? Frank. I think he actually, well, he tried to sign Gray at Brentford and he put him on ahead of Bergvold in the Super Cup. I feel like he really, really rates Gray. And I'm not saying he doesn't rate Bergvold, but I think he really, I know like Danes and Swedish actually have a bit of beef, don't they? So, you know, maybe it's wrapped up in that. But I feel like he really likes Gray. And I think Gray's a tidy prospect.

28:20I'm not saying you're doing this, but I have seen quite a lot of grey hate the past few weeks. And I'm not really buying it. I'm not really on board with the sense that people just want him to be good because he's English and all this type of thing. I don't really buy that. I think he's a talented young player. And yeah, he's not at the level of somebody like Pelinia. But at the same time, I think it was a good performance from him today. An overall good performance from the lads, as they say, don't they? And really, really nice.

29:04Jack:Dougie Joyce official says, beat Burnley at home and Spurs are back. Oh, right. Okay. So he's a right. He said a load of other stuff after that. so we'll hide him on that one. Deuces Wild says, get in Jack. Wondering if maybe we could see Solanke and Richarlison go up top together. Kudos as the right eight in a 5-3-2 against City. I'm probably the wrong person to ask about this, mate. I think that's one more for you extra inch, lads. I would say, just in terms of my gut instinct, the way they play, I don't, I'm not so sure Richie and Solanke would play that well together. I don't know. I don't get the feeling that they would mesh that well.

29:56Jack:But maybe they would. And, you know, if that's what the manager wants to give a go to, then let's give it a go. I'm not going to sit here and say, no, don't do that because it's not going to work. or definitely do that because I don't, you know, I don't have a basis in, I'm not really, do you know what the thing is? I'm not, I don't have enough like tactical acumen to really be able to sit there and say, let's try and do this to address that problem. So much as, you know, I think we can all sit here and say a certain player might do a certain thing quite well or not very well, but I'm not going to pretend I'm going to be able to like solve something and I don't know my gut feeling is that Solanke and Richarlison wouldn't play that well together but who knows until we've seen it do you know what I mean um Bish Bosh Josh said Bosh says thank god we won we can't lose to Burnley at home um well we can but let's hope that we don't and we didn't so get in um Ross Jay says Richie has never let us down he just needs to stay fit he's probably never let us down I mean I can definitely recall some fairly ineffective Richarlison performances I will say that but yeah I think the large part of it is a lack of momentum a lack of fitness and yeah I was I was I was really excited when we signed him I was really excited when we signed him from Everton because I thought he's a really talented player and the way he sort of ingratiated himself to Everton and I think Spurs and Everton are quite similar clubs in many ways, right?

31:44You know, we always, we've got our sort of bitter rivalry

31:48Jack:with our much more successful and glamorous neighbour.

31:56Jack:You know, the club is sort of centred on, you know, old sort of, fairly old-fashioned values of playing in a certain way and being very like community-based and all that type of thing and so I sort of saw Richarlison as like you know a good fit a good fit for Spurs in many ways and I'm just if he can maintain this now great that's like delightful because otherwise you know we sign as a we sign Savino and had he not been doing what he's doing now we were still really going to be short of a viable striking alternative to Solanke but right now it's not looking that way is it

32:46Jack:T-Pace says I thought Archie played well today needs minutes in the midfield um harry says uh he's a burnley fan here didn't think you looked great thought we were on top for quite a few spells in that game fine you know it's interesting perspective um i i'm not i'm not going to sit here and say we look great because i don't i don't think we look great i think

33:16Jack:I don't think it's quite true Harry to say that you were on top I think you definitely had a fair amount of possession at times but I also don't think you really did anything with it I think we managed to sort of contain you pretty effectively um and that's definitely something Thomas Frank does and I'm fairly certain something that Thomas Frank is really tried to drill into us I look at say I'll pre and I know it's only a pre-season game and all that but I look at our pre-season game against Arsenal where it was really a tale of two halves I don't think Frank was drastically defending in the second half against Arsenal because he was so desperate to hold on to a 1-0 win in the preseason it's obviously nice to beat Arsenal in a pre-season friendly but still I think it was more about showing that we could do that so we could we We could go out in the first half, score a goal against Arsenal.

34:13Jack:Then in the second half, knowing that there was going to be a storm to weather, how we can implement systems that can allow us to deal with that. And I think that's definitely something Frank has focused on with Spurs. I think he's obviously seen last season us shipping goals, kind of losing. And I don't think it's not even a reflection on Tottenham last season or Andrew Bostokoglu or anything like that. It's just what the Premier League is like. Premier League is like fine margins constantly. And he speaks about this all the time. He speaks about kind of like narrowing fine margins, marginal gains.

34:46How can he get extra percentages in everything that he does at Spurs to mean that we push further up the table?

34:54Jack:And I think a big part of that is Spurs learning how to control teams quite well. And I think, honestly, I think we did control Burnley quite well today. and as I was saying sort of at the top of the pod I think whilst we don't have a really creative outlet in the centre of the park at least we don't have that number 10 we don't have an Ezra or somebody yet we are going to struggle to be as maybe

35:25Jack:as what's the word like swashbuckling it's one that people always use isn't it swashbuckling as we may would like to see as going forwards but we still, we made our opportunities count. And look, I think that credit to Burnley, and I'm not even saying in a patronising way, you looked as good as I've seen you in a really long time. You know, very used to obviously seeing kind of like Deich Burnley, which is a bit more agricultural as people say, but Parker definitely has you trying to play football. I think you've got some talented players in there. and you may well have a decent season. You may well stay up.

36:11Jack:I'm not saying that for definite, but I thought you looked all right. Alan Leslie says, evening all happy with three points, but we looked a bit rusty at the back. Midfield felt better with Bentancur. Yeah, I thought at times, you're sort of saying there, Alan, the defense looked a bit rusty. I think, I don't want to single players out, but again, I'm doing it. I do feel like Bergvold, surprisingly,

36:47doesn't quite, you know, he's not quite at the level he was at last season. Let's say that.

36:55Jack:And he's a young player. He's learning as he goes. He's probably trying to adapt to a new system, maybe a new role in Frank's system. I just felt at times he was kind of giving the ball away, maybe quite needlessly at times. Romero is definitely also, I think I saw two or three maybe unforced errors from Romero. Misplaced passes, one almost obviously resulting in a goal for Burnley, which would have been less than ideal. But Mickey van der Ven was pretty on it. I thought Porro, it was brilliant. Spence is fantastic. so you know it's great um youtube guy says coyes that second goal from richarlison will be on the shortlist for goal of the season i agree with you mate i think it should be already i was thinking that already it's got to be up there um and charlotte somebody could somebody called charlotte she says Richarlison handshake emoji kudos could this be the start of a great partnership yep I think it already is I think it already is and Richarlison may not be the most consistent but he has the kind of flair goal he has that kind of flair goal in his back pocket he does we've seen a few of those for Everton we've seen it for Brazil the other thing I'll tell you what the other thing about him is he's a beast in the air as well.

38:20Was it Marseille? Who was it? It was somebody in the Champions League.

38:25Jack:And I want to say it was maybe his Spurs debut when he got a couple of headers. And they were both really good headers. One of them was that huge sweeping motion of his body. And he just smacked the ball into the back of the net just by shifting the entirety of his weight behind the ball. Wonderful. Let's hope he can keep it up because he seems like a nice fella. And yeah, I'm here for it. um soul sniper gaming says letting gray in these home games in say 12 out of 18 games will do him the world of good he can only improve remember bergval at the end of last season um so yeah that's i agree mate i agree i don't think there's any harm like we obviously don't want to loan gray out we want him to be around the place so give him minutes give him minutes in games and And let's see him flourish because he was a wonderful...

39:24Jack:I saw a take the other day that said he needs a loan to a championship side to prove that he can cut it at that level. Obviously, many people were pointing out to this person, are you forgetting him absolutely dominating the championship with Leeds, thus encouraging Tottenham to sign him for the amount of money that we did? I think he's a really good player. I think Gray's a really good player I think he's I think he's far honestly I think he's far too under the microscope I think he definitely is Solskjaer Gaming has also said did you forget that Bergvold was injured in the back end of last season I guess I did so you know fair play if that's if that's in response to me saying that he looks a bit rusty I'm not saying Bergvold's a bad player just to make that perfectly clear I'm simply making the point that I feel like in the last couple of games he's looked a bit rusty that's all Mr.

40:19Jack:Richard says Mark Schwarzer was a bit salty on 5 Live comms, not the result he was looking for Is Mark, is he like an Ange Postacoglu thing or is he a Burnley I don't think he had a Burnley affiliation did he Ross J says will the change from a back 3 to a back 4 depending on who we play mean it will take time for defenders to get used to could well do I mean, it's always hard to know, isn't it? Because I always wonder, like, all of us, and I get that it's sort of different, but all of us in all of our respective professions and jobs, right, have to think on our feet, don't we? We have to react to things differently.

41:00Jack:And I'm certain most of these players will have all played in various different systems. So you would hope that changing formations from time to time, I know they drill and they will be practicing a very specific role also within a system it's not as simple as like championship manager slotting players in a position and saying there go out and do what you do um but i would also imagine that many of these players have played in a like multitude of different positions and tried to do different things within their own position at various points in their career so you would imagine it's uh it was all right um for them to do that but i don't know yeah like you say maybe it is let's have a look at the I think it's time to do the players hey Chicago class it up with Crocs you know back to school is coming in fast so why wait to find your new fave footwear step into a local Crocs store and step into your new look try it style it make it yours because the right pair doesn't just show up it shows off first day fits handled Walk out ready for whatever's next.

43:15Jack:Lowe's so uh Guillermo um as he said I've always been saying Giuliamo but Guillermo he said in uh you know they get the players to pronounce their names the Premier League do against the green screen um vicario didn't have an awful lot to do today had that one weird moment where the ball was kind of bobbling but it wasn't it didn't look particularly that dangerous and he elected to kind of punch it over there over the crossbar instead of catching it um he's just he he is a bit erratic isn't he i'm definitely i've definitely got my eyes on him at the moment i would say um So yeah, let's hold that thought on Vicario for the time being.

44:08Jack:Jed Spence, he's just a lovely player, isn't he? He backs himself both defensively and offensively. He's really solid, works really hard, has the technicality and the physicality to be a really, really brilliant player. doesn't stop running um he's very dangerous down the wing i just yeah i'm i'm really delighted that he's seemingly got his spurs career right back on track because he's a great player mickey van der ven good performance today um a couple of last ditch challenges where he kind of caught up with uh burnley's it foster they had up front um caught up with him a couple times lovely jubbly um yeah he's wonderful isn't he christian mamiro for the most part was really good really solid um progressing the ball got caught out a couple of times didn't he um a couple of unforced errors one almost cost us a goal just keep the concentration in check lad keep it going but look a clean sheet i'm not going to be digging out any of this back line really when they've kept a clean sheet.

45:27Jack:Wonderful, let's get more of those. Pedro Porro seems to be, as I said sort of the other day, seems to be really relishing his role as one of the senior members of this team now.

45:45Jack:He's just a really solid professional player. Seems to really actually like Tottenham, dare I say. let's see him continue to grow because it's

46:01Jack:the player we signed from Sporting was unbelievable and he's been very good for Spurs don't get me wrong just sometimes defensively can look a bit whiffy can get caught out a bit but as long as he stays focused as long as he stays fit he played a hell of a lot of games last year and as long as he stays fit we don't run him into the ground then he's a wonder he's one of our better players isn't he there's no way around that Lucas Bergvold for the most part a really good performance like I say a few wayward passes um didn't look quite as sharp as he did at points last season but still what I really like about Bergvold is his tenacity um I like the way he gets into a game I like the way he attacks a game um presses Harry's tries to break up opponents and what they're doing so yeah he's a wonderful talent and as was pointed out to me moments ago was injured at the end of last season so you know fair play if it's taking him a bit of time to get back up to speed fully Archie Gray I thought was largely good today I'll be honest I thought he spread the play about nicely throughout midfield picking up the ball moving recycling possession that's what they say isn't it

47:22beg your pardon

47:24Jack:recycling possession keeping the ball moving keeping it alive don't really remember him getting mugged or anything at any point so he's just a nice player I appreciate his skills

47:43Jack:good lord Pape Mastassar, what a player. Wonderful footballer. Just absolutely everywhere. The amount of times when... Because, you know, he was playing as a sort of number 10, wasn't he? He was playing as like an advanced midfielder at least. But it doesn't seem to matter with him because the amount of times you would look up, you'd see Tottenham bringing the ball out of defence. And then there's just Sarr there, just in front of the defence, providing an option for them, picking the ball up. taking it forwards, linking up play, always looking for like a one-two. That's one of his things he's always doing.

48:23Jack:Little one-twos, looking to exploit space, always manages to get into good positions around the box to pick up loose balls, to either crack one, as we've seen with great success in the past, or keep spreading the ball out, spread the ball out wide to one of the players who can then get the ball back into the box and everything. He does a lot. I just think he's a supremely talented player. Really, really wonderful. I hope we can keep on to him for many years to come because I think he's going to mature into a truly brilliant footballer. Brennan Johnson, lovely, well-taken goal. Johnson again, ole, ole.

49:09Jack:I'm not going to lie. I'm not going to sit here and pretend I didn't think he struggled for large parts of the game but as he does when he is called upon he delivers the goods doesn't he so the guy's a top legend he scored a european cup winning final goal for us he's done enough you know build the statue already kudos i mean i've spoken about him for about 10 minutes at the start of this but again what a signing what a signing unbelievable 50 million quid or whatever and he's astonishing he's got the lot hasn't he um i can't wait to see him get further settled develop his partnerships with players around him if if we get ezzer into the mix as well if we get Savino into the mix as well it could be really really really exciting times but I'm trying not to like we've been here before right we've done this dance before haven't we we've we've seen how this one can end so let's just keep our powder dry on that but at least the idea of Kudus mixing with potential new signings and at least developing the partnerships that he has with the players that we already have is very exciting.

50:32Jack:He really could be the signing of the summer. Just, yeah, supremely, supremely talented player. I'm really shocked. Like, I'm really shocked. I didn't realise he was quite as good as the player that we've seen already so far.

50:53Jack:Richarlison, absolutely here for the redemption arc, as we're saying fantastic performance against PSG wonderful performance today I'll reiterate what I said at the top had a bit of everything dropped back linked up play well played well with his back to goal held up the ball superbly I've already said linked up play also was making himself a nuisance making runs pulling defenders all over the place getting into the right position finding space in the box on two different occasions now and displaying the athleticism and the audacity to attempt the sort of shot that he did for his second goal. Wonderful.

51:35Jack:We need more of that. We need players that can make a difference like that. Every team does. Every top team, we talk about marginal gains and all that type of thing. Having players that are just brave enough to try and have the ability to pull off a sort of thing that Richarlison did today is invaluable. And it's the type of thing that maybe there is a metric for it, but I don't think you can really quantify easily at least. it's just an instinct that some players have and if he can stay fit and if he can keep focused and if Frank can keep him feeling loved and feeling a part of this and feeling an important part of this then that's exactly what he could be for Tottenham Jao Polinha came on didn't have an awful lot of time so whatever not much to say there Mathis Tell glad to see him come on after what he faced in the week.

52:34Jack:And I thought the few things that he did do was quite nice. He had a couple of nice little runs down the channel. He's 20 years old, man. He's 20 years old. Like the sort of criticism, you know, and there's so many people as well doing the whole, I don't condone the racism, but, and you're like, mate, just like, just turn that in for a bit. Do you know what I mean? Like nobody needs to really hear your take, your like caveated take on his performance or something he's a 20 he's a 20 year old lad right he's achieved a lot to to just be at this level just give him a bit of break he's clearly talented he is clearly talented right it's fine to be sort of skeptical it's fine to say he needs to show a bit more i get all that but what i'm saying is people just writing him off okay and there's plenty of people doing that plenty of people saying nah he's no he's not he's not got it he's never gonna have it i guess i think that's a bold statement to make um and i cast people's memories back to sonny in his first like season and a bit because plenty of people were saying the same thing about him speaking of son as well the fact that burnley had a player called son today it was proper like you know the ear and right turn around look around when i first heard it i was thinking it just sort of had that moment where you're like wait hang on what's going on there and then And obviously I had to look it up and see they've got a player called that as well.

53:59Jack:Dominic Solanke, again, didn't have an awful lot of time to do it. None of our subs did, really. Dom Solanke, Wilson Odeba, Rodrigo Bentonker. They all had a bit of a runabout, but not an awful lot to report back on that. 3-0 for Spurs. Opening day of the season. That's great. You know, couldn't ask for more. It's lovely. And thank you everybody for joining me again for another season as well. If you're coming back to the stream, welcome back. If you're listening to this and you have been listening over the summer, cheers. What I really would appreciate this year is to get things growing a bit more.

54:42Jack:I've bought a new mic. I've done up the background if you're watching it on YouTube. So putting more effort into this. And all I ask in return is if you can drop the video a like if you're watching it. subscribe put on your notifications all that type of thing and if you are listening to it if you're listening on spotify it's it's the quickest job to just drop it five stars give the pod five stars give it a rating wonderful if you're listening on apple give it the five stars as well and if you're feeling especially generous leave me a leave me a review as well that would be grand much appreciated if you'll listen to even more from the pod do have a patreon patreon.com slash rtr pod where there's extra pods on there and every now and again i drop like little videos and stuff like that i do if anyone remembers me from making my old videos and stuff back in the day i dug one of those out um an old eric lamella video to say goodbye to the goat um as he's retired so you can get little things like that on there people will often ask where are all the old animations on YouTube, come on Patreon and you can have a look, can't you?

55:50Jack:But anyway, if Patreon's not for you, like I say, please just drop this video a like or a rating. Much love. Appreciate it. Pod will be back on Monday. Spurs returned to Premier League action under new manager Thomas Frank in stunning fashion with a 3-0 victory over Burnley. Scott Parker’s side were praised for their defensive solidity in the Championship, but the Premier League is a different story.

Tottenham are now without Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, yet may already have a couple of new heroes in their ranks. Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison combined brilliantly for two impressive goals, including an absolute worldie from the Brazilian, before Brennan Johnson sealed the win with a neat finish.

Join Jack as he breaks down the performance, the standout players and what this opening day statement could mean for Spurs this season.
