In short
Reaction to Tottenham’s 1-2 home loss to Aston Villa, arguing Spurs lacked attacking “cutting edge,” were too cautious/“meek,” and criticizing goalkeeper Vicario and Spurs’ midfield setup.
Guest backgrounds
No guests are named in the provided transcript; it’s a solo host reaction plus listener comments.
Key claims
- Vicario is “under fire”: host says his positioning/footing cost Tottenham, and argues he isn’t good enough for a top team (compared to Ramsdale).
- Spurs’ midfield pivot (Bentancur + Palhinha) is too neutral/cautious, producing mostly short sideways passes and failing to create danger.
- Spurs lacked invention and attacking rhythm; chances weren’t converted and forward play felt ineffective.
- Villa’s goals were enabled by Spurs’ defensive/pressing issues, though the host retracts full blame for the second goal as a “beautiful” Buendía finish.
Notable examples
- First goal: Rodgers shot “in the middle of the goal” that a top keeper should deal with.
- Second goal: Buendía’s venomous corner/near-post finish.
- Substitution criticism: host was “raging” when Xavi Simons was taken off.

1:08I recently got back from a holiday in Bilek in Turkey. It was brilliant, but I did spend it looking longingly at the golf courses in the area. In reality, if I'd taken my clubs, I probably would have come back from that family holiday single. It's a brilliant place, stunning beaches, five-star hospitality in some of the best hotels on earth. But for me, just getting out on those courses would have been the icing on the cake. 1:46Right, well, yeah, not a great afternoon for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. Not a great afternoon at all. and I'm gonna say it you know I'm gonna say it because I'm gonna say what I see not a great afternoon for Thomas Frank um yeah not a great afternoon at all for him just in my opinion you know I think it has been good so far and yeah you know I've sort of I've rallied against a lot of the kind of the I don't know what I've sort of felt is a bit like knee jerky some of the reactions to what frank's been doing so far but i think let me just try and get this sorted out a bit try and get this microphone position sorted um that just wasn't very good that wasn't very good at all um for anyone that didn't listen to the preview this uh this time last week, actually, one minute past four o 'clock, Charlotte was giving birth, we've had our little girl, so her first match, her first game on this earth as a Tottenham Hotspur fan has seen Spurs lose at home to Aston Villa in a pretty meek and pretty disappointing fashion, so I'm sorry, my darling, this is the life that you don't choose, but it's thrust upon you.
3:23As I'm sure it was the same for all of us. Look, how do we get into this one? Let me say, first of all, I dug out Vacario for both of the goals. In real time, with the second, first goal I still stand by, I think his positioning was off, his footing was all off. And I know Rodgers' shot had a bit of a dip on it, but it was basically in the middle of the goal. A proper keeper should be dealing with that, should have dealt with that Morgan Rodgers shot. And I did also say the same of the Buendia shot. I was like, proper keeper would be dealing with that. Then Sky showed it from another angle. And it's a beautiful goal.
4:11It's a lovely finish. So I apologize there, Guillermo. You probably couldn't have done much better than that. I normally say Guillermo, but I've heard some people say Guillermo. So maybe it is that. You just kind of think, don't you know, when you're talking in foreign, you want to put an accent on it. Guillermo, you know, that's how, you know, I would sort of think you would be saying it. Apparently not. I don't know. I'm not going to spend an entire podcast digging out Vicario, but I do think my line on it now is that, quite simply, if we want to be a top team, if we want to be one of the very best teams, he isn't good enough.
4:59He is our Ramsdale. He's not good enough. If we want to progress, we need to get a new goalkeeper. Sammy Mockbell has come out this week and said that there's a lot of question marks over Kinski behind the scenes at Tottenham. I think there was some questioning. I think the word that was used was that people feel like he's regressed since he's been at Spurs. There's some talk about his attitude and application due to a lack of opportunities and everything, which is disappointing. You know, it's disappointing. You know, you would want a player to know that coming into the Premier League, especially as a young player with an established goalkeeper ahead of you in the pecking order, there's going to be a fight there.
5:43You're not going to walk into the team. And I mean, to be fair, if Vicario, if I was a good goalkeeper and Vicario was starting ahead of me, then I might be quite annoyed as well. But the point is more, I don't know enough about Kinski to know whether or not he is good enough. And he's looked decent in the bits that we've seen, but I think it's fair to say we haven't seen enough to make that judgment. And if people at the club don't feel Kinski is good enough to step into Vicario's shoes, then buy somebody else. I don't think we should be waiting to see if Kinski is ready to replace Vicario or not.
6:21I think, I just think Vicario is not good enough. And we've seen, you know, we've seen some sort of constructive uses of stats and things to say that no, Vecario is really good and everybody needs to be more patient with him or people need to realize that actually he is brilliant he's not like he just isn't and eye test will tell you that every time and I know it's one of those eye test versus stats type arguments I think we've all settled on now the fact that they do go hand in hand you don't have to be in either camp or anything like that you know it isn't like a contentious political issue or something like that we're just talking about football um and i think you can you can you can see the validity of stats and the perspective they offer a game in the aftermath of it they can make they can help you make informed decisions as to what players should play where but also you know i think we all know there's a certain eye tests and i don't want to say intangible because it is a tangible thing you can just get a flavor for how a player fits into a team, the effect that they have on the team overall.
7:30And I just think every time I watch Vicario, I don't think he breeds confidence in the players around him. I don't think he seems particularly confident himself. He's always in two minds as to whether to come out and claim a ball from a set piece or something like that. He always seems to be in two minds to come out and take a ball from the feet of a sort of onrushing attacker and stuff like that. And I do think, look, today as well, I do want to say, especially, I mean, for both of the goals, for both of the goals, it's not all on him. The second goal, like I say, I will retract that because I think it is a beautiful shot from Buendia and it's gone right into the corner.
8:09He's hit it with some venom. It's good. You know, I'm probably being a bit hasty and looking to blame Vicaria. First goal, I do think he could have done better with. But the team around him, like the defence, could have done better to close down those opportunities, to close down the attacks. So it's not all on him. I'm not saying this is solely on him. If we had a different goalkeeper, we would have won that or we wouldn't have lost at least today. I don't think that's the case and that's not the point I'm trying to make. But the point I am trying to make is again, and this is the prism I'm trying to view things from because hopefully this is what Spurs are aspiring to be.
8:45We want to get as good as we were under Pochettino and then go one step further. And if we want to be that, if we want to be our top team, you know, top, top, terrific team, then I don't think he's good enough. And I don't think that's a particularly controversial opinion. But this isn't all on him today. I think I would say this is the first game I reckon I've watched. And I've actually probably been kind of annoyed with Dash questions Thomas Frank's intentions behind this one um I don't know like and I know people will say armchair experts we're not there with them in training you know week in week out all that type of thing and I could I completely take all of that stuff on board but you know many of us have all watched football for decades or at least just we say a large percentage of our lives many of us played it when we were younger some of us still play now I definitely don't but some people still player now to vary in different levels and things like that so i think this this whole idea and you know many of us read about football we're totally immersed in football all the time we talk about it all the time you know um in in a more complex level than i do on this podcast and i don't i don't pretend to be some kind of authority on you know scholarly the scholarly side of football or anything like that but it's not to say i don't seek out and listen to kind of material or you know take a more kind of in-depth perspective into football as and where i can as and where i can get it and the point i'm trying to make is that like this whole idea that the fans can't have a say on anything i think is is redundant i don't think it's fair i don't think it's true and i think we have seen as a fan base as a football supporting people
10:45that the Polinia and Bentanka double pivot just does not work and I don't the thing is I don't want to I don't want to be in this place because I like I understand there's a level of hypocrisy here because I've been fighting at least for the for the sense of like believing in Frank believing in what he's doing getting behind the project and so I am I am trying to like not let things bother me but when you see the team sheet come out and you see it's Polina and Bentancur again you can't help but groan a bit you know you can't help but feel like why are we going into another game like this especially a home game in, I think it's fair to say, a fairly, not negative, but I would say a neutral fashion.
11:35And I think that to me is, because I've seen it sort of said that they represent a sort of a negative side of football, a negative way of playing. I don't quite buy that. I don't quite believe that. But I think it is a very neutral approach. I think it's a very cautious approach to football matches. and I think I've been you know very upfront and very kind of I am a firm believer that Frank is trying to implement a greater sense of defensive solidity in Spurs in what we do in the way that we play that's the foundation that he's trying to build and I think that's that's fine and that's great you know we have shipped goals for fun um in the past few seasons and he wants to avoid that and I know and I'm totally on board with that and I think that's fine but I also don't think that means that you need to be entirely cautious of the opposition at all times and and that to me is like Bentancur and Polina that's what that represents you know it's almost like a double anchoring in that midfield really for me you know it's it's Polina in there and then you've got Bergvau maybe Bergvau and Xavi Simmons ahead of that and that to me is a is a more positive that's a more front-footed midfield you know if you want to be say slightly more cautious than that you put Sarr in because Sarr gives as much defensively as he does offensively he's up and down the pitch and he's always doing something for me bentanker is just he kind of sits doesn't he he sits in that midfield and kish lily white lab shared something during the game he shared like bentanker's pass map as it was um unfolding during the game and we're just looking at short sideways passes constantly all from that position like anchored in the middle of that midfield and again this might this might be ignoring the fact that Aston Villa do tend to have a pretty kind of combative intense high press midfield themselves they like to win that midfield battle that's one of the things that Emery really gets them doing he has a real fight in his players he really kind of gets them pressing hard and you know I don't think they are you know miles more expansive than than Spurs are but I think they definitely approach games with the bit between their teeth a bit more Spurs I think in some ways we're quite reflective of Frank's personality a bit more reserved a bit more respectful of the opposition and I think what I want to feel from Spurs right now is a bit more bite I want to feel a bit more bite I want to feel a bit more like we want to be a problem for the opposition right I want to feel more like we are there to make ourselves heard we are there to go at them and to implement something on them we are there to create problems for the opposition not just kind of break down whatever it is the opposition do and then try and pick holes in what it is that they're doing you know if I was if I if I was asked like what is, what is Frank's kind of style?
15:03What is it that Frank is doing at Spurs right now? I would say that he is just being, he's being respectful and he's looking to, you know, seize opportunities as and when they arise in, in, in the flow of a match. So what we're doing is we're looking for, we're looking for an opposition team to either, you know, make a mistake or for us to break up what it is that they're doing and hit him on the, hit him on the back foot. And the problem is though, when you're playing with Benton, Kurt and Palinja, you're never going to play that expensively. You're not going to move the ball quickly enough and you're not going to get the ball to somebody like Xavi Siemens, who I think, again, I do think individually, he probably needs to focus and take, some of this on himself.
15:58I don't think we got the ball to him quickly enough today. I don't think we looked to utilize him. I don't think we were kind of looking for him in dangerous positions or trying to play risky passes to him when he was making sort of little runs and stuff. But equally,
16:17and I want to be conscious here because I'm talking about a player who is young, who is very promising, who is adapting to a new league. all those kind of caveats that I give to a lot of young players but it's still a player that came for a lot of money and I know he didn't decide that but he's also paid a lot of money who is comes with a considerable kind of weight of expectation behind him should we say that I just think he needs to be doing a bit more I think I think he needs to be I think he needs to be a bit braver in a few of his actions um I think he needs to make himself a bit more available maybe whether that's you know dropping back whether that's I mean I think he does so I think he does drop back as I was sort of as I say that I'm like well I did see several times today when I do think he was tracking back I do think he was trying to win the ball um I mean it was he was the one that was trying to win the ball off of Rodgers when Rodgers went and you know smacked one in from however far away so it's probably a bit harsh to lay that one at him um but I just I don't want to say he's hiding but what's like a softer way of saying that he hides a little bit um I just want to see a bit more from him but again like I say I don't I don't think it's all on him I don't think I don't think it's really on him that much at all um like I say that that midfield pivot just doesn't really do anybody any favors and I think we try to cheat it a bit we try to cheat it a bit by getting the ball out to Kudus and getting the ball out to Odderbeer because Kudus especially we know can make things happen from not a lot I mean there were several like beautifully whipped balls into the box from him today um his ball retention is brilliant I've seen a few people complaining online about him not being able to take on his man and all that type of stuff I don't buy that to be honest I think he was really top draw um for most of the game and I know he's sort of a bit of a Marmite player but I think Odeber was decent today I think Odeber played a good game um I think he looked positive in many of his actions.
18:41And I was encouraged, shall I say, by a lot of what Odebeir was doing. I don't see him as a problem as such.
18:55But for like, I would say for like my tentative kind of criticisms of Javi Siemens, I was raging when Frank took him off. I just I didn't get it I didn't get it for a second I didn't understand it why why take him off why not you know see see what he can do when you're putting a more sort of positive midfield on behind him if you're trying to if you're trying to sort of seize the game towards the end there right and you bring it on say if you take if you're taking off Polini and Bentenka and you put on Saar and Bergvall right why not see what Xavi Simons can do with those two but taking him off just felt it felt very negative and you know you know what like on them on the fighting cox patreon preview ricky and flav were talking about frank and his kind of demeanor in press conferences and they were saying it in quite a light-hearted but still exploratory fashion and i did actually sort of agree with what they were saying in so much as even just when he's talking like it feels like he's he's being too respectful of the opposition and you know you don't want to manage to be coming out slanging off opposition managers and you know being rude or anything like that but I do think and you know maybe this is just what he's like as a person but Frank does seem to spend a lot of his time always going on about like how great an opposition manager is or how great an opposition player is and stuff which is which is fair but the point i'm trying to make is that does this kind of mentality bleed into what we're doing a bit where it's just this kind of this the aura right now feels a respectful one it feels like one where like i said we don't want to be a problem for the opposition teams we'll sit and sort of bitch about michael arteta and we say that you know he's an awful i mean he is he is an awful human being you can tell he's an awful man but he gives little respect to anybody right his arsenal team are nasty like they are nasty and i don't think the type of football that they are playing is miles apart from what we're doing right now but they definitely have more of an edge on things and yeah i know i know they're years on into their they're years on into their project and they've got you know they've spent loads of money and all this type of stuff i i understand that i'm not trying to make a direct comparison in so much as saying also the better than us like i'm just saying more that the attitude that they take into games is to be prickly is to be nasty is to win the football match is to be as horrible to the opposition and get in their heads as best you can pep guardiola breeds that sort of mentality in all of his manchester city teams nasty nasty teams you know and not a lot is often made of that but they are nasty teams and we sort of give them a pass because they stop Arsenal for stop Arsenal or Liverpool winning the league a lot but they are usually quite nasty teams you know we saw that a lot when we when we were playing them in like the Champions League and stuff remember like Fernandinho like how how just horrible he was in that midfield for them and just how you know Gundogan could be like you know he's he's a very smart very reserved character but he could be like a dirty player on the pitch and stuff be a real sort of menace to the opposition.
22:20And I just don't feel like we are that at the moment. And I know it's a bit accidental, Mourinho, but I think we are just a bit too nice right now. And I can speculate on whether or not that comes from Frank, whether that kind of comes from the top. But I do like, you know, I don't know. I don't know. I just, I just feel, yeah, I feel like we're a bit too nice. I feel like we're a bit too nice, a bit too respectful. And today, yeah, we just, you know, we suffered from a lack of invention, I feel massively so. And we also just, we're just quite meek. We're quite meek in a lot of what we do. And I don't feel like there's, I want to see, I do want to see more invention.
23:17I want to see more guile when we're attacking games. I want to see more of an idea of what it is that we're doing, more of an idea of what our game plan is past stopping the opposition team scoring. And I'm by no means saying like, get rid of Thomas Frank, or I'm by no means saying that I don't think there's any value in anything that he's doing, because I do think there is. I've got a lot of admiration for what he's done so far at Spurs, but I want to see a bit more from this. I definitely, you know, I want to see a lot more from this, from whoever's in charge, from our home form, because it's been drastically abysmal for ages now.
24:01I don't know what is going on with this stadium, with this ground, but, you know, it's horrible. And you also, like, you don't know how much of this is opposition teams come here and think we can get a result there Spurs are terrible at home and I never really it's so funny to sort of feel that way because Spurs like you know for most of my life have always been the team that like especially when I was growing up we were always all right at home we could usually give anyone a game at home on our day but we were just a right off away from home we were that we were that team we were a mid-table team win a larger amount than we lost of our home games and then lost or drew most of our away games.
24:44It was very, very rare, like in the 90s, noughties, that Spurs would, you'd feel confident at least that Spurs were winning an away match. But you could generally feel confident that we put on a good show at home. And it's completely the opposite right now. I actually look forward to away games a lot more than I do home games because it's just something about the ground or whatever. We just haven't adapted well to it yet. and I think you can probably say in the time since we've moved to the ground it's been the landscape at Spurs has been rather chaotic things have been shifting a lot we've gone through various different managers we've not really had a sort of settled team we've not seen a settled group past the Pochettino era we've not had like a group of lads again that we sort of pin our hopes on and we're getting there like there's definitely some faces in this team now where we're like these are our these are our boys these are our lads we're close to it but we're not quite there yet um so maybe when that's a bit more settled maybe when the team is a bit more settled and i do think the the thing that underpins a lot of this that i've got to say as well is there's definitely a personnel issue there as well right like we are missing some pretty key players um some pretty massive players from the side and we probably still need to do some more transfer business this squad is still a work in progress so for everything that I have sort of said there about Frank and the way we're playing I don't take it as in like the circumstances right now are perfect for a team to be kind of you know smashing up the Premier League and competing with Liverpool Arsenal and City for the top honours but I just think it is fair enough to say that I would like to see a bit more from Spurs.

And Messi only trusts Duracell. so there's quite a few congratulations from people here which I do appreciate very much thank you very much Matt in Oz Louis F thank you very much um Alan Claudius Fitzpatrick says congrats and also says I get sick of constantly losing at home and it always feels like we limp over the line in a home loss yeah yeah and I think that's yeah I think that's that sort of sums it up Alan because after this game you know final whistle goes and I just it's like the Roy Hodgson slumping his head on the sideline do you know I mean like it's the it's the granddad in the chair after a Sunday roast and a couple of scotches sat by the radiator in his chair and you just kind of you know your head just goes that's another loss at home I'm not like the point is I'm not raging about I'm not there like seething and like smashing the gaff up I'm just sort of like we've lost again at home this isn't good this is really annoying Gage Reynolds says hard to keep making excuses for the attack doesn't help that we got a pylon in goal yeah I agree I think it is it is hard to keep making excuses to the attack like I say I think there is a there is a personnel issue there but as I've sort of been saying i would like to see spurs be a lot more front-footed
29:57um zeros and ones says starting odber and tell is arrogant um needed more experience against villa that's probably quite a fair point actually um odber i don't mind i do actually really like tell but yeah i agree with you i think yeah starting tell against the side like villa who Yeah, you know, I think maybe we've been a bit kind of, you know, thrown by their start to the season, which has been by no means good. But they've actually been, you know, coming into this game, I was looking at their form for the preview pod. And they've actually been in really good form for, you know, the past month or so now, barring the sort of international break, last month of football that has been available to them.
30:45I think they've won like four or five in a row now. and we know they're a decent side they're playing in the champions league last year narrowly missed out on it last year as well yeah didn't really add to the squad i don't think they added to the squad in any significant or meaningful way this summer but they've still got some really tidy players in there really really good players so yeah i mean i think that is a is a fair point um zeros and ones also adds vicario is ian walker with a skin fade um gage reynolds congrats on becoming a dad thank you very much um ando says lots to dislike there but the main issue is the lack of attacking threat odder bear tell xavi richarlison are utterly hopeless so easy to defend against villa were never in danger um i think i utterly hopeless I'm just saying, my gut reaction to reading you say utterly hopeless, that feels a bit harsh to me.
31:52I wouldn't say I have zero hope in those players. I do think there is talent there. I do like them. I just think right now it's not really working, is it? There's no real rhythm to it. We're not getting the ball to Xavi, but equally I don't think he is moving the ball about that inventively or quickly or cute in such in a cute fashion that's what it is isn't it right I think we need to be just a bit sharper a bit crisper in our attack things need to feel like there's a bit more method behind it right other than just kind of getting it out wide and trying to whip across into to who really you know keith anderson maybe one or two half decent performances out there today the rest offered nothing frank's tactics made no difference our entire forward line is terrible um that's shared by ricochet pig who says the front line is so weak um marcy says such a frustrating performance I think we can all agree with that.
32:59Deuces Wild says, set pieces, crosses, and get the ball to Kudus. We're a tough watch at the moment. Maybe that's just the Prem in 2025. And that's, do you know what, that's the sort of crucial point, I think, I am ignoring here, and I was talking to Windy about as well when I had him on the pods a couple of weeks ago, is that Spurs are not free from what is happening in the wider world of football, if you like. We're not immune to the trends in the way that football is played, in the way that teams who are successful effectively win games and exert some sort of dominance. right and Arsenal are the the best example of that right now you know as I keep saying I don't think Arsenal play in a wildly different fashion to Spurs they got a bit more bite about them probably a bit more quality in personnel as well if we're being brutally honest about it but they're doing well City aren't a million miles different you know they they don't play the most sort of pleasing on the eye football never really have you know it's hard to know isn't it's hard to know how much of this is a spurs issue and how much of this is a uh a football issue i keep me saying issue i say it so i say like issue and tisio this is a peek behind the curtain um at home because it annoys charlotte and uh why wouldn't you why wouldn't you want to torment your wife you know um awful man but so i keep nearly saying it's you um is that one of those things like you know if you are speaking proper should we be saying issue you know like in the same way that somebody says you know we normally most of us will say sandwich right s-a-m-w-i-d-g-e sandwich sandwich sandwich sandwich you know that type of thing but you would say that the the proper pronunciation would be sandwich right sandwich issue tissue is that how you're saying it is that Is that the proper way?
35:26I don't know. Wrapped up in this stuff in the UK, if there's, you know, Americans or anyone watching saying, why does it matter? What's the proper way of saying stuff? Language is a versatile beast. It's a fluid invention, you know? Language is there to be shaped, to be moulded, to be creative with. Save me the poetry corner, naff nonsense, right? There's a proper way of saying stuff and we all know there is, all right? the class system tells me the so freddie nelson says our attack bean championship level is a big issue issue we need to start acting like a big club and become cutthroat with the squad we need to improve on vicario tell odaba richarlison johnson and a few more don't disagree with a lot of what you've said there, Freddie.
36:18I do like Telenotter Bear, but yeah, I agree with a lot of that. Adam Michi says, we made five subs and each one offered progressively less than the last bloke. The total lack of quality today across the pitch is deeply concerning. Yeah, yeah, I don't disagree with that at all. Jay Green says, congratulations. Thank you very much, my friends. um alan claudius fitzpatrick gerald martin the fifth also says i think the biggest issue with vicario is that i will uh with vicario is that i will accept he might be upgradable but i think a new number eight a new left winger a new striker and a new backup center back are all much bigger issues issues um don't agree on a number eight left winger no I don't I definitely don't agree on a backup centre-back I don't agree on the new number eight new striker maybe left winger maybe but I do think getting a really good goalkeeper in is is pretty high on my on my uh sort of priority list if I'm I'm brutally honest with you um and Amici does also say Vicario isn't good enough but on days like today it's the forwards that failed us Jask says shame but glad Xavi was finally played as a 10 Kudis's technique made everyone else look average he's the only consistent creative outlet we have is what it is as long as frank learns something well
38:00this is what we can all hope we all hope frank will learn something um and he says that he will and i'm sure that he will but he keeps playing vicario vicario well yeah but he keeps playing bentonco and palina um and it just it doesn't work does it it just doesn't work maybe away at the Emirates right but even then I really want to do that I want to go at him I want I want a nasty nasty little player like Bergvau on the pitch going at him I want Polina there to act as an anchor I want Bergvau to be there because he can carry the ball forwards he's tenacious he can get stuck in as well when he needs to I don't want to see him linking up with with Xavi Siemens getting the ball to him quickly and I want to see Siemens being being braver with the ball being braver in possession and out of possession as well.
38:53But Benta and Karen Polina just, you know, I've said, I've made this part. I'm not going to labour it. Darren says, terrible subs and starting Benta, Karen, Polina again. Yep, thank you. To think we could be stuck with those two starting for the next few years is worrying. Robert says, they cut through our midfield like it was melting butter. I think that's the problem as well, isn't it, as well? We sort of put those two, like I say, the neutral option in midfield. didn't stop them getting at us, did it? Bilamdahl said, I'd look closer, but I think Sheve got marked out today because the other two midfielders aren't threats.
39:29Not enough forward thrust without Romero. It's mad how much he contributes to our attacking play, isn't it? Although that is kind of modern football, isn't it? The two DMs and the Doggy-Odeber link up. need to adjust earlier after the equaliser Luis F says the truth is we have a total of one decent proper top level Premier League Champions League starting player in our attack which is Kudis the rest are either bang average or not even that it's absolute bare bones probably a bit harsh on Mickey Van Der Ven let me think who else probably a bit harsh on Polinia I reckon probably a bit harsh on Pedro Porro as well I would say oh hang on wait in our attack yeah fine no fine you're totally fine Luis sorry should have read what you said for um more closely sorry about the drinking noises I'm not that sorry really I keep doing it don't I um Aaron Jay says Frank is average exclamation mark well we're letting in two goals marcy says blessings on your new arrival and the rest of the family um thank you very much yeah previous video was so upsetting but hearing your amazing news put a big smile on my face congratulations thank you very much marcy um boof says crap i'm afraid i wonder if you mean the performance on my podcast i don't know could be either could be either i'll take either on board robert says our summer signings have let us down um bin guy says which one do you prefer ang posta no clue or thomas fraud uh well i like thomas frank um yeah i don't know i can't be arsed
41:40benedict fox says congrats jack love to charlotte may you raise your daughter to never be this passive we need bold babies yes she's already pretty strong-willed right loves a kick maybe maybe that's all babies but again as i say you know i'm viewing this through the prism of my child being a unique and wonderful snowflake who is going to change the world because she's the smartest blah blah blah blah blah you know all that stuff all that new proud dad stuff and on says bentan capelina can't be a thing going forwards ricky072 says frank out frank is clueless
42:28uh spurs t-rex says uh let's have a look spurs t-rex has said quite a lot of things um i'm trying to find the one that i just saw then sorry it's the so the comments what will happen sometimes is they like refresh and it pushes all of the comments down to the bottom so i just have to sort of scroll back up and see where we were at um spurs t-rex says it's the cutting edge up front the chances we had uh would have put those chances away dom is needed it would be nice to have dom solanke back run it um andy p says congratulations to you and charlotte um thank you very much mate i think the issue with the benton ker polinia dynamic is that benton isn't taking control of the game his passing is poor he is not dynamic we need more yeah i think that spot on mate um jan says many congratulations thank you very much jan uduak dan says please can someone tell me what tell was doing on the pitch today then lots of upside down question marks odder bear should have left the pitch before half time um yeah tell tell was quite disappointed there wasn't he it's a shame because pre-match he had you know there were a lot of really nice soundbites coming out of tell um a lot of what he was saying was you know really heartening and i think a lot of us were really really enjoying it and really encouraged by what he was saying um and i think there's a real will for him to succeed at spurs there really is um and so let's hope that he can it's just you know it's it was quite quite a stuttering performance again today wasn't it really
44:24ben matthias says an import an improvement on recent home performances but not good enough probably an indictment on the recent home performances we need more from shavi congratulations on your personal good news thank you very much ben appreciate that mate um um brendan mcgurty says congrats from brazil on the baby thank you very much brendan robert says sand wedge that's probably to my earlier point with a little golf emoji
44:59and then oh okay Anon says Jack if you had to choose between a Champions League final with Arsenal or licking a urinal from the old White Hart lane what's it going to be honestly and I mean this honestly I think I'm taking the urinal there and I know I know that's quite a disgusting thing to discuss on uh on a podcast here but I I really don't think I've said this before i don't think i would be able to mentally cope with a champions league final against arsenal i know that i know that sort of the the promise of beating them would go on forever but i just i don't think i'd be able to do it i don't think i'd be able to cope and as i've said if we did say get to the champions league final against arsenal i i honestly i really think i would i'd turn my phone off and i would go to the cinema and i'd just watch a film i'd watch a film and then get out and see what the final score was and either be delighted or not and i know i know by doing that you are potentially missing one of the greatest highs ever but i just think i think that would be that would be an abysmally tough watch that tottenham against arsen in the championship especially if it was this season this season when they are so much better than us it would just be disgusting
46:35um and on says the toilets in that place were a uh were a biohazard they were i'll tell you why they were worse remember the um next to see you got like the bell and hair and then a couple of doors down the big sort of public toilet i think is that still ever open on match days i don't think it is anymore but that that was putrid that was this disgusting it just stunk it stunk of rotten fish every single time i went in there i just thought how how does it smell this bad like that acrid stench of urine vial anyway um that's what this this sort of game does doesn't it that's what this sort of game leads us to talk about oh man united are beating liverpool um that's not good for arsenal not winning the league is it what's going on with them on a slot fraud let's do the players let's do the players quite quickly at the end of this um because i think i've sort of spoken about a lot of players there um vicario actually do you know before i do the players i'm gonna say because i don't do this enough i don't plug it enough and now I've got a mouth to feed I do have a patreon so quite a few of you been complaining lately about adverts about the being adverts in the podcast about the volume of the adverts the volume of the adverts in my opinion I'm just saying I master it it's fine it's just that when you're doing this when you're doing a stream of consciousness and talking and then suddenly I get it it dives in with a whistle blowing and a cheering for a betting advert or something is quite jarring and it feels quite mad you can get ad-free podcasts on patreon for one pound 50 a month patreon.com slash rtr pod you can get every episode of rule the roost ad free if you want to join the inner sanctum which i think is about five or a month you get extra podcasts so pre-match pods there's a bank of kind of content on there that i've released over the summer so there was the stitch in time that i've done last year are we talking about i was talking to various different Spurs fans about.

50:33this summer serve up the cookout classics oscar meyer hot dogs and heinz mustard grill up a dog add classic yellow mustard or loaded chicago style we all know it's not a cookout without oscar meyer and heinz so juliema vicario i've said a lot about him today i'll leave it at that Jed Spence um well there won't be any penitentiary posts today from Jed a decent enough performance from him you know there was nothing about his performance that really stood out for me as particularly like poor or egregious or anything like that so fair enough you know good on him it's good to try and utilize the bounce that he no doubt had out of the international break where he was particularly good and getting a lot of plaudits mickey van der ven i think was quite harshly booked at the start um was decent but i think he often looks like he struggles a bit when he's not alongside romero and i think it does often show and look please don't take this as some big evisceration on mickey van der ven but it does show me that he is quite far behind romero in terms of his quality and just his
51:55his maturity within the game right and that's fine you know that will come to him he is a younger player he is less experienced um but i think it does show and i think his physicality gets him out of trouble quite a bit of the time right um but he's still obviously a wonderful wonderful player i'm just making the point that you can tell he feels more confident when he's alongside Romero but again I don't want that to feel like a slight on Danso because he has stepped in last minute and I think he's done a really good job for the most part a couple of really nice sort of last-ditch challenges they put in and his long throws really do cause problems for the opposition I know it's all a bit Gertrude Wallop football and we sort of turn our noses up at that to a degree
52:42but I think he's a good player. I like dance and at least as a backup option, he's really good. Pedro Porro, a bit of a quieter one from him this week. Not his usual kind of expansive self, but he was, you know, he was all right. Again, I don't really have like an awful lot to criticise him for. Uh, Benton Kerr, yes, he did score a goal, but I think his performance was largely meek. It's just sort of, you know, it's a mealy mouthed indication as to how we're approaching the game. Really when he starts alongside Polinia, I've hammered that point home enough, but it feels like it's something that's shared by pretty much everybody that watches Spurs.
53:30Ciao Polinia, I did think was a bit of a monster today. I've got to say, I do think he was a bit of a monster. I think he did his usual thing really well. I still am on the side of things that I think he is a really talented and worthwhile player to have in the squad. So, you know, no real objections from me about him, about the idea of us signing him permanently or anything like that. I really like him. I really rate him. Wilson Odeba look again he is going to sort of divide people but I think I think I see enough promise from him that I'm happy for us to stick with it he feels like he feels like out of the options that we have number one he feels like the most natural fit on that left hand side and that's what I really like about him and I also just feel that he is direct he is trying to do stuff He had the beating of Matty Cash a couple of times.
54:31He didn't always use the ball that effectively once he has beaten him. And I think that's something that I want to see him develop, right? You want to see that final ball get a bit better. But he had that one opportunity where he cut inside, teed up his right foot, and had a nice shot that, what's his name? Emi Martinez spilled into his box. Probably should have done better with it. wasn't that rasping a shot or anything like that but still you know it was it was it was well made opportunity from from other bear and i think there are flickers a promise with him xavi seaman's quite a quiet game today as i said don't think it all rests on him but i just want to see a bit more i want to see a bit more from him i want to see a bit more from a player that is very exciting and clearly is supremely talented um it is worth remembering that he is adapting to a new country to a new league a new way of playing football all of those types of things so you know we can't just ignore that manik kudos is just he's a lovely player isn't he a couple of really nice whip balls into the box um one that tell really should have done better with but he's our you know he is our most dangerous player at least you know in an attacking sense right now um you can only imagine if you had him and Semenyo down the other side you got Kulusevsky back in there somewhere you got Madison you got Chevy Siemens you know how we make it work I don't know who starts where I don't know but we will have more options in time it won't be long so you know things are looking up on that front um Mathis Tell was yeah he was he was largely disappointing today I think but you know let's just see what he can do Richarlison came on on 60 minutes and I honestly I couldn't tell you a single thing that he did today um and that's just Richarlison it's just it's just a shame he starts the season so promisingly you think oh he's turned over a leaf I sort of said you know there was one of those on Twitter one of those state your unpopular opinion type things or you know the opinion will have you like this and it's a john wick thing with people holding their loads of people holding guns to his head and all that type of thing um but i said that i think he has actually got the quality to be one of the best attackers in the league but he just doesn't have that he doesn't have the focus or the mentality or whatever and I don't really like talking about that, but the way that sort of stuff manifests, at least on the pitch, I would say he just, he just cannot, he cannot keep it consistently.
57:21He can't, you know, and you know, he, he is one of those players that I'm just, I'm tired of the conversations now. Hopefully we can get some money for him moving on, move him on and get somebody else in because it's done for me. Lucas Bergvall didn't have enough time to really do anything. So, you know, I think he looked fairly promising in a few of his actions. Pat Matassar had next to no time at all. Brennan Johnson did all right, got into a good position, blazed the ball way over the bar, so that was disappointing. Randall Kalomuani, I said in quite like, you know, nasty, mean fashion on Twitter, is he actually a professional footballer?
58:09but he uh there's lacking match sharpness and i get that but there's being like not asked as he looks number one but outside of that like his touch is his touch is awful his touch is woeful his positioning looks awful his movement looks awful like he looks he looks really poor he looks really really poor um you know I've genuinely seen better from Dane Scarlett when he's come on for the few opportunities he gets he looks like he's a player that's you know more with it because maybe because there's more drive there or something but I'm not going to write off Kala Mwani now I know he's like half fit and I know he's not really played much or anything but I really like I'm really getting like Carlos Vinicius vibes off of this that this is going to be one of those real like oh remember when we had colomawani for a season when he is playing for whoever you know when he's back at psg or when psg sell him to sunderland or something like that do you know what i mean i just yeah i'm not really yeah i've got a few red flags about him um but yeah all in all a a disappointing game a largely disappointing game a poor performance we'd want to see a bit better wouldn't we coming back from an international break but alas we haven't done um so we go into the champions league midweek thank you to everybody who has congratulated me and charlotte i'm gonna hold up here for anybody watching right now our very good friend charlie sent us a lovely little um tiny little away kit which is really beautiful i want to say a big thank you to a lot of the other coys lot who sent us like two weeks worth of you know cook that company cook that sells like basically like posh ready meals um so a big thank you to to to my coys massive who sent that to us really lovely really heartfelt really touching thank you to everybody who has watch the show listen to the show the show the show get get over yourself the show you sat here talking to yourself the show the pod with rob daly um he absolutely banged me out on that one really good if you're not listening to that listen back to the pod rob daly and ben haynes really enjoyable pod I don't speak on it much so I feel completely emboldened to say it's a brilliant podcast and a brilliant listen because it's mostly those two just giving you the behind the scenes of what was going on around Bilbao and everything really great really enjoyable so go back and have a listen to that please leave ratings please leave reviews like and subscribe as I always say there's many more people watching this than have liked the video please just take two seconds to drop the video a like it allows more people to find it to discover it makes my ego grow makes the show grow um yeah ratings review spotify listeners drop it five stars that's enough from me today come on you spurs up the spurs much love everybody whatever

Tottenham slipped to a 2-1 home defeat against Aston Villa in a flat and frustrating performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Despite a bright start, Spurs quickly lost control and never looked convincing once Villa grew into the game.
Questions are now being asked of Thomas Frank’s reserved tactical approach, with his side once again lacking attacking impetus and creativity in the final third. Further scrutiny also falls on Vicario after another shaky display between the posts. A disjointed showing, a disappointing result and a warning that Spurs still feel some way off finding a rhythm.
