In short
Tottenham’s 3-0 season-opening win over Burnley, Richarlison’s two-goal performance (including an overhead/bicycle-style scissor kick), early impressions of new manager Thomas Frank, and transfer talk around Eberechi Eze and Savinho.
Guest backgrounds
Lara (Spurs fan; discusses being “voice of doom” joke, emotional summer after Ange Postecoglou’s departure, and being at the match). Ted Trunk (host; Spurs fan; focuses on tactics, squad-building, and transfer strategy).
Key claims
Thomas Frank is adaptable and brings “marginal gains” (fast starts, set-piece quirks like long throws), and Spurs already look well-drilled/organized. Richarlison’s fitness is the main question, but his link-up with new signing Mohammed Kudus looks immediate (“telepathy”). Gray and the “boy band midfield” (Gray, Bergvall, Saar) helped control Burnley. Spurs’ transfer approach frustrates them—Eze likely requires paying the full asking price.
Notable examples
Richarlison’s overhead kick; a “perfect team goal” where Frank says everyone (including Vicario) touched the ball; Gray recycling possession; Pap Sarr’s box-to-box impact; Eze’s release clause reportedly expired and Palace still holding firm; Savinho fee rumors (City want north of €70m).

2:16Kudis. Oh, beautiful drop on the shoulder from Kudis. And what a magnificent goal! that is sensational from Richarlison
2:30hello everybody welcome back to a jubilant rule the roof podcast and welcome back Lara and it's it's actually we've sort of had a bit of a running joke haven't we that I I tend to bring you in when times are hard and that's not intentional I'm the voice of doom but still start of the season 3-0 win let's let's let's you were there how are you feeling about it yeah good actually it's I think it's been a bit of a summer in it like obviously we had the great night that was Bilbao and then all the kind of fallout from that with and general Thomas Frank coming in and all that kind of thing it's been it's been a lot of emotional ups and downs I think over the summer and I've been my head's been in a lot of different places about where I am with it but to be honest with you I am quite I'm quite excited about Thomas Frank I was you know obviously I was gutted about Ange I was definitely one of those that had the emotional outpouring after he went and you know we should have been given another chance or that but I do I do feel quite strongly that if if we were going to replace him I'm actually now thinking Thomas Frank is a is a really good bet because I think he just has that I think he just has a good balance of what Ange had in terms of the inspirational good management he's obviously a good talker, can come out with a good soundbite like his operation one the other day which I love but there's a bit more of that the risk of sounding a bit Brexit, the old tactical pragmatism isn't there and I think for me the sort of takeaway definitely from this weekend coming off the back of the Super Cup last week was that we are going to see not just one way of playing.
4:20And I think what I feel like more positive, actually, about this game, because, you know, you can throw out a bit of the, you know, it's only Burnley and all of that. But I think, you know, having seen us put in a really solid performance against what is, let's be honest, probably the best team in the world right now, and then go and do a really solid job against Burnley, which is one of your, you know, those are the banana skin ones for us, aren't they? it's that you know really you should be turning up and beating them 3-0 and we did so yeah feeling that was a very waffly intro but yes feeling very lost but look but I mean you're in the right place for waffle that's the thing so yeah I mean like Burnley that's the team that I keep oh I've said this the other day and I'm pretty sure it's true only conceded one goal in terms of like they didn't conceive more than one goal per game last season.
5:13So I know it's in the championship, but what we can take from that is that they are still well-drilled, well-organised outfit. I know he's not everyone's cup of tea, and I think it tends to be more when he's linked to being a Spurs manager. People have more opposition to him. But Scott Parker's clearly a fairly talented coach. He sets them up quite well. I thought they actually played all right against us, to be fair to them. but like you say I think getting a 3-0 win to start the season at home in front of you in front of your own fans is doesn't really matter who it's against does it and as we saw sort of last year it was kind of open season for Spurs defeats you know yeah it's nice to just be kind of breaking that habit a bit it's nice to see I mean I don't say I hopefully don't say this too soon but it's nice to see that a lot of those players who were you know who formed that team we haven't had a wholesale amount of changes this summer haven't kind of got that rot in them aren't going to continue losing games in that fashion um and on Frank I was interested for me because you've mentioned him there you're you're sort of you're actually quite encouraged by him as coach as am I you know I wasn't I wasn't bowled over when we were first linked with him and when we first signed him i wasn't against it but i was also like yeah it's what it is but a lot of people are sort of um i would say a lot more of the naysayers anyway sight that he's got like a lack of aura that he's you know not much of a presence and i think yeah this is it i don't know if i buy that do you no i don't i think you know he's he's quite good in press conferences i certainly wouldn't say he's a like no besides i think that's a i think that's a bit of a strange one to give him yeah you know again he's not he's not an ang but that was i always say that was angie's superpower angie's superpower was the way he could you know get up and make one of those speeches and no i think i i wouldn't say i wouldn't put someone's frank in that category at all i think a lot of it honestly i think a lot of it comes from when we were i come i think it was maybe the Hong Kong game against Arsenal he was like wearing some of the club's training kit and I think the tracksuit was quite ill-fitting on him it was like a man of a certain age wearing a Nike tracksuit is kind of, I think that's right it's like his Ed Miliband eating the bacon sandwich moment there's a reference for the kids but 3-0 and I don't think we can get through this game without talking about Richarlison's obviously two goals, both assisted by Kudus, one of them being that incredible bicycle kick, scissor kick.
8:05What are we going with? Scissor kick, is it? I don't know. I used to always call it bicycle kick, but I'd say overhead kick. Yeah, exactly. It's coverall, isn't it? But yeah, I'm a bit of a sucker for an overhead kick. I'm not going to lie. I love an overhead kick. And I think that's probably the best one I've ever seen one of our players score in terms of trying to think because like another... Defoe against Man U. Do you remember that? I think I want to say that it was our... It was the season we qualified for the Champions League when we had the yellow bits on the kit. And we had that amazing run at the start of the season where I think we won the first three or four games.
8:42And then we had United and Defoe scored a bicycle. I think we won about two nil up early doors. Defoe scored a bicycle kick and then they came back and beat us and stopped them. That sounds about right. That's probably why that's been wiped from my brain. has probably gone in the bin with the other ones where we've cropped up against them. But yeah, that goal, that was, yeah. I was saying, I haven't got one of those brains, like my husband had one of those brains where he can remember goals like play by play. Like you'll be watching Premier League years and he's like, oh yeah, that's that goal where this happens and that happens.
9:18My brain just doesn't work like that. It doesn't remember in that level of detail. but there's some goals that's really sticking in your mind and you can still see them, and that's going to be one of them. I said, that one's going to go in the goals I can picture in my head kind of list, because it was, yeah. It felt like it came out of nowhere as well, but then I'm not sure it did, because Frank was saying afterwards, wasn't he, it was like the perfect team goal, everyone touched the ball. Yeah, have you seen that? Have you seen the video of everyone touching the ball? I've not seen it. Spurs released it.
9:51where it's showing it, but I know he mentioned that his analysis team had told him that everyone, including Vicario, had touched the ball. Yeah. Unbelievable. Frank Ball. Frank Ball in action. Yeah. I mean, it's obviously an encouraging start for Richarlison. He was pretty incredible in the Super Cup final, I thought, as well. Yeah, agreed. How important do you think it is that he stays fit? Because, I mean, and this is no real disrespect to Solanke, but while Richarlison is playing like this, you know I'd like to see that continue right yeah and that's what you want then really you want competition for those places you don't want someone who's necessarily always like a a banker to start and you know their positions never under threat I suppose it's a bit weird because we had Harry Kane for so long and obviously that he is a bit of a unicorn in that sense whereas you know you've got Harry Kane in your team and he's playing um but it's you know we're not we're not in that position now really you want to have a bit more of that sort of healthy competition and I think there would have been had Richarlison not been injured so much really but I'm with you I've always liked Richarlison I've never had a problem with him as a player I've always thought he's got potential to do really good things for us it's just been the injury record it really it really has been and then you forget that when he sort of first when we first bought him we kept playing him as a bloody winner didn't we so he's never really I don't feel he's ever really had a good long stretch actually in his preferred position.
11:26He's had a few where, actually, he's had a few where he's gone on real fire runs, hasn't he? I can't remember whether that was last season or the season before, but he had a little spell, didn't he, where he was absolutely on fire and then he got injured. So it will come down to the fitness. It will come down to the fitness. So whether this operation he had last season is the kind of thing that's going to solve this, solve these problems that he's been having. But yeah, if he can stay fit at the moment, he starts for me. He's got one of the best goals to games ratio in the Premier League, doesn't he?
12:01Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me. I haven't seen that stuff, but no. It's kind of one of those misnomers though, isn't it? Because it's largely because he's so injured all the time. But it does at least show that when he is playing, he's often contributing, contributing um which is which is exactly what we want and like you say because I mean I've I've probably like dug him out on here but it's it's not so much that I've ever not rated him as a player yeah I've just always felt like it's just he's you can't rely on a player that can't stay fit consistently in that way so it almost just seemed to me like look if we can get some money for him let's take it and you know let's go again let's roll the dice again but it seems to be from like frank i think frank said after the game he wasn't even entertaining the idea of selling richardison he was like a must must keep player um because he'd obviously seen what he can do at everton before i think we'd always seen that we'd always seen him sort of you know keep everton in the premier league essentially sort of drag him to survival be that real clutch player for them if you like the main man for them um and i mean the thing i guess i really have always appreciated about him that i do like about him is just is that personality he seems to like yeah he gives his all for it doesn't he he does seem to give his all every time he's on the pitch and he has been quite stubborn and he as well with the where they've had saudia offers come in he clearly wants to say and fight for his place and yeah like i said there's not a so there's not that many of those kind of players out there really so um it's always nice to have someone who you feel like is is fighting for their place in the team I've yeah I can't can't fault his attitude really and you can see how much it means to him you can see devastated every time he gets injured um but yeah same as you my my view was I don't know I've said it before if you know if somebody came in for him we should take the money but really that's like I said it's just down it's just down to injury and the fact that because of the way we operate as a club, because we don't build a big squad, you've got less, there's less of that, you know, in a city or, you know, Chelsea, wherever, if you're happy to spend however many billions on a big bloated squad, then you can sort of carry that.
14:20Whereas I felt like we don't have the sort of leeway to carry somebody in such a crucial position who isn't going to be available for half the season. So I think, you know, fair enough. If Frank's seen something in him that he likes and if they really think they can keep him fit, I don't know whether we've got a new medical team or what has happened there. Hope so, but we'll see. If he can stay fit, I've got, yeah, I would keep him all day long. So I feel like everything I will say about this season comes with the caveat, if they can stay fit. Yeah, exactly that. And that's kind of the issue we face, isn't it?
15:05I suppose because we have done for a couple of years. Touching on the point you made there about us not building huge squads. We always know we're walking that tightrope. And I'm sure there's plenty of teams that would say that. And that's just the nature of top-level football. But I think the drop-off from our first team to the backups is not quite there yet. I mean the thing I would say about Richarlison as much as sort of praising his attitude and everything like that technically speaking I mean obviously the goal to pull off a goal like that is sensational we've seen him do it for Brazil before so we know he's got that in his locker but I was sort of saying in the post-match and you know I think like people can think oh you know post-match just a bit giddy a bit excited but I sort of simmered on it a bit more and I still think like that performance was kind of like a cane light and I just say that in the respect of like he wasn't just like a number nine sat up front.
16:05No he's not he really isn't. He was dropping back he was offering so much. Yeah exactly he was offering so much he was linking up play he was dragging defenders all over the shop and his partnership with Kudus is a joy already right? They seem to have a little they seem to have clicked very quickly those two don't they and yeah like we were still saying on your post-match when you find those players that kind of get each other. Sometimes it's like, you know, it just takes them up a level. There's certain players that were just never the same without the other one. And, you know, if you've found your other half in terms of that, you know, partnership, maybe that's for Charleston and Kudis.
16:46I don't know. Obviously, we're basing it off one game, so it might be a massive knee jerk. It was, they looked good in the PSG game as well. So, yeah. He's, I mean, he's looking like a steal at 55 million, apparently. But it's actually quite mad, isn't it? He could end up being one of our best signings in years, I think. If he can say that. Well, yeah, again, again. But, I mean, the main thing for me is that, like, I really, honestly, I really, I just didn't appreciate quite how good he is. No, me neither. I'll be honest, I haven't paid attention to it. my main memory of him was him scoring against us last season and getting sent off so i was like i know he's good i know he's got a bit about him but i didn't really know much more other than that but he's looked sensational so far and he's actually the sort of player we need with that's what we've been missing isn't it that sort of dynamic get up the pitch take someone on and then deliver a really good cross at the end of it did you see his almost like it was sort of like a a rebana in a way it It was like a cross-legged touch to bring the ball down.
17:54Yeah. I picked up on Twitter afterwards. Yeah. He's got a thing about that, hasn't he? I don't know whether it was after the game. Again, I saw a video on social media where he was basically saying, I like to try and entertain. I think he has got a bit about him where he doesn't want to just play football. I actually quite like to. And yeah, we always love a bit of that, I suppose, don't we? That's what. Welcome to Tottenham Hotspur. I'm to Tottenham if you will. Yeah. if you want time to appreciate that come to top then I think we've been a little bit starved of that haven't we really over the last few seasons I'm just really delighted that we've got a sort of a bums off seats player again who when he gets the ball and you can see him driving at the opposition it's suddenly exciting again and you know he's got the ability to make something happen with whatever space or opportunity that he's creating himself um and seeing that him and richarlison already like we say have that telepathy to a degree is i don't know it's exciting it's suddenly um because the thing is as you said at the top you you don't want to sort of caveat everything with just like well it was only against burnley i think like you do have to you obviously have to temper your expectations slightly and you have to realise of course we're going to have much sterner tests than Burnley this season and for the way Emirates, all that type of thing are, we know what those games have in store for us but I think seeing it's the fact that Kudis and Richarlison linked up so well against PSG for example.
19:34Yeah, exactly I think that's the thing for me that sort of caveats the, I think if we hadn't had that game, if we hadn't won the Europa League and we hadn't been in the Super Cup final or we'd just come off the back of pre-season friendlies, I'd probably be a bit more like, yeah, but it was just barely... I think it's like seeing those two games back-to-back against such different teams of, you know, literal, like, Champions League winners versus a team that's just got promoted to the Premier League. And, yeah, it's the fact that we didn't approach them in the same way either. So there's clearly a plan there, which...
20:13has sort of felt like it's been lacking for a little while. Well, were you, I mean, were you at all surprised to see him switch up the formation, Frank, for this or that? Or is this, because this is what goes to the territory with him, isn't it, right? Yeah, I think, because again, like, I'll be honest, I've never paid, I've never paid huge attention to Thomas Frank beyond knowing that he was the Brentford manager and that, you know, Brentford have performed fairly decently against us a few times. I have done since we hired him, you saw him. do all the retro setting you learn all the stuff about yeah then i've sort of started to obviously listen to a lot of podcasts of people talking about him and and you know red stuff things like that and i think the thing that is very clear about this he doesn't just have one way of playing and it's that he's very adaptable to what very adaptable to what aim what he has to work with and be who he's playing and i think the other positive about getting frank in is obviously an existing premier league manager he knows the other teams we're going to be playing this is not like he's coming from a completely different league and you know obviously he's playing with a different squad now but it's the same opponents you know they're not this is not a brand new sort of proposition to him it's just now he's got different kind of tools to tackle that with um and i think it's the piece about like the marginal gains as well that keeps coming up yeah it's a real thing about what are the small cases things like that dance so long throw i was like you know just oh we've just we've just never done stuff like that have we really we've never So never really sort of, yeah, we've never done the long throw.
21:45It's just like a quirk you see other teams do, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah, that's quite cool. And also the insanely fast start that we made to that game. Yeah. Like it was kickoff, we went straight up the other end. And then immediately, I remembered last season, oh God, yeah, Brentford scored against us, didn't they, in about 10 seconds. So again, it's those little things like clearly that's another one of his sort of marginal, you know, let's capture my surprise is go for a really fast start. It's all those sort of small, you know, stuff if you go on like the management courses and they talk about, you know, Formula 100 teams and things like that, isn't it?
22:20Like they do, it's a marginal gains, it's incremental. Because by the time you get to a certain level, you're so good that it is like, you know, it's matters of milliseconds, isn't it? And I quite like how he clearly has that sort of, what are the little things that we can do? so I'm interested to see what other little things he comes up with throughout the season really on a side note one of my old jobs we uh we had a um a visitor from I won't say who it is in case somebody knows who the person is but we had a visitor from his career was for a British institution kind of like closely linked to the military where it was all about precision and teamwork and all this type of thing and yeah since retired and was coming in to give kind of talks to you know middle management types about how to build better teams and all this type of stuff and he literally it was it was so brentish he genuinely had like a little um cd player like boom box with him and got one of our people like he he he sort of walked out of the door of the office and asked him to like play it and he played like an entrance music which was Robbie Williams's let me entertain you I'm not I'm not even joking like it was it was so surreal and I honest to god I thought we were like for a second I was like is this some like Anton Deck hidden camera show or something yeah like is is this is is our company somehow taking the piss here out of us but they weren't and it was uh yeah it was everything that you'd imagine it was from that note.

25:55salt lake city branch terms and more at applecard.com back to thomas frank i did like the thing i just thought about that is because i did have that slight raised eyebrow when i saw polinia not starting i thought oh hello okay so he's going with the uh as people called it the boy band midfield of of of gray bergville and sar but i thought there was actually a nice balance to that I thought they they we definitely had a moment towards the end of the first half where it felt like Burnley were getting on top a bit and I was in the back of my mind I was like this is why we need Polina this is why we need this this foothold this control over the game but they weathered the storm and they will be all the better for that the fact that that trust has been placed in them and i guess what we need to sort of accept is we have a long season and frank said this himself yeah we're going to be playing about 60 games this season yeah and what we need to ensure is that everybody who is going to play a part is sharp knows what they're doing and is feels a part of what it is that we're doing um so i'm not you know today it's worked out for us uh 3-0, we've beaten Burnley.
27:13We've had the boy, Banredfield, and they've played well. I mean, Gray's been getting a lot of flack over the summer and everything, but I still maintain it. You forget how young he is because he had to play some blooming games for us last season. I still think he's really talented. I see so much in him that is, as you say, he's young. So, of course, he's going to need to get up to speed with things. But what I do see of him is his control, the way he strokes the ball about. is lovely. He kept the ball moving all game against Burnley at all times. He was picking it up, receiving it, and then knocking it straight out to Bourgville or to Saar, who were then, I think they call it recycling possession, don't they?
27:55I just thought Gray was doing it superbly. He's another one who hasn't played in his favoured position, has he? So although he's played a lot of games for us, he hasn't played a lot of games for us in midfield. No. So, you know, again, it's different skill set, isn't it? So, yeah. I just thought our press and our structure just looked really disciplined, looked really good. I'm just shocked by how well drilled we already look under Frank is my main takeaway from it, right? Yeah, we look very organised, very organised. And I don't even think we played that brilliantly at the weekend, which, again, is fine.
28:36first game of the season yeah everyone's a bit rusty you don't you know we're expecting us to come out like prime barcelona um and at the end of the day you've just got to do the job haven't you but i don't think we really have to get into you know third or fourth gear really in that game um but it still felt comfortable so it was yeah i don't i don't feel like we played badly i don't feel like we played brilliantly but it just felt like a it just felt like a good solid job that we did and like you say organized I didn't I wasn't feeling worried at any point during that game where normally I would although I was getting a bit at 1-0 our puzzle the usual we need a second we need a second just because we always had a couple of little opportunities we always need a second and then it came and what a second goal it was and then that was that they had a couple of opportunities didn't they that was the thing and that's when it started to I say there's squeaky bum time a bit but they we weathered the storm and kept on with it um i can't seemingly get through a podcast nowadays without like lavishing praise upon pap sarr who looks like a player frank has identified right straight away almost as clearly this is one of my guys Yeah, this is one of my guys.
29:59And he's absolutely thriving at the moment, isn't he? Yeah, I love Saw. I love Saw. I think he's a great player. Actually, how old is he? 21, 22, I think. I was thinking that at the weekend. I was looking, I thought that whole team is young. 22, yeah. Yeah, yeah. He's probably one of the more senior players, really, really, out of that kind of midfield as well. But yeah, he just seems to get better and better. And like I say, you think how old he actually is. His ceiling could be very harny. Yeah, I mean, he's everywhere, isn't he? He's all over the picture at all times. Because he was sort of, you know, I think in a rudimentary line-up graphic, it showed that he was playing as like a number 10.
30:54But again, I think we know like not just in Frank's system, in modern football now, players' positions are less static than they maybe once were, aren't they? They kind of float all over the pitch to a degree. So that is kind of, we know that's kind of Sars, what is it, like his function? He does operate in that box-to-box fashion. Yeah, he does. He sort of appears everywhere, doesn't he? But doesn't he and a half? Do you know what I mean? He does it just, he's everywhere all the time. I was just trying to dig out Lily White Rose. Basically shared, where was it? So, Papsar, 22 years of age, 106 Spurs appearances, nine goals, eight assists, 24 caps for Senegal and a Europa League winner.
31:4422 years old, you know? It's not bad, is it? It's not bad at all. And I think sometimes we just, I get it. It's kind of, this is what modern football does. The coverage, the podcasts, everyone, right? We build up this culture, this climate where it's immediate. Players have to satisfy this function or this need or this desire in us as fans or as a football-consuming public for this immediacy, for this to be a success. Now, we've signed this player. We've signed this young player, be it Archie Gray, be it Papsar, to perform this function for us because that's what we've been told the scout reports and all this from people who follow their previous clubs or people who report on their league be it the french league or wherever or the championship will say this is the type of player he is if given room to grow this is what he can do here's some statistical charts and whatever you know stat maps and all that type of thing that will show this player is good in all these different things but we always tend to remove that human element from it don't we um we never have that patience and i get it like i'm i'm just as guilty of that as anybody else we never have that patience to be like this is somebody coming into not only like a new situation in a in a footballing sense but moving to a new city moving to a new town making new connections with two new teammates all this type of thing we just need to give these lads a moment to breathe and i think we don't give enough credit to the fact that for the past basically since Pochettino the club's been a mess it's been all over the place all mess it's not like they're coming into it's not like those players have come into a sort of top tier settled team with you know these sort of experienced heads who've been there done that you know it's almost been a bit of a I mean last season so many of them were just it literally like chucked in at the deep end and it's like sink or swim lads basically like it's a it's a different proposition and again you've got it's one thing doing that so even in a championship team but we're asking what is supposedly a sort of top six premier league team and yeah if you have set records didn't we last season all over the shop for youngest lineups and things like that because we would yeah it was basically a team of kids who had to sort of it felt a little bit like work out as they went along and in some ways it's going to have you know that's incredible experience for them and they probably are more mature than other players their age as part of that but you can't forget they do they still need to do that learning from kind of more experienced players as well so yeah it's um which is where we still need to still need to bolster the squad a little bit i think just so you're not as reliant on those because they have to be they have to be given time to fail as well like you know because they are so young they've got to be given the opportunity to kind of make mistakes and things like that and And I think probably too much responsibility has probably been put on some of them.
35:01I think Sar's probably one of the ones who possibly is more capable of handling that. And just because he is a little bit older and is just quite mature as a player, I think, really. But I think, yeah, we've just got to be a bit careful. Just a bit careful with some of the kids, I think, with how we jump on them. But again, it's that in other sort of top six teams, those players wouldn't be getting exposed, I suppose, to that scrutiny in the same way because they just wouldn't be spending as much time on the pitch. No. And I mean, this is a good moment to talk about transfers and everything because I think as brilliant as we were against PSG and obviously as brilliant as we were against Burnley, I think for example with the Kudus and Richarlison partnership the I couldn't help but think especially against PSG if only we had that one other like star and if we had if we had if we even had Sonny against PSG I would have backed him to kind of nip into some of the pockets of space that were being created and Ezra is obviously the the name on everybody's lips at the moment how are you i mean where are you at with that right now because obviously he's so he had a 68 million pound or euro i can't remember release clause last uh that's lasted for the past few years that actually expired last week um we didn't want to meet that valuation by all accounts we're still trying palace we're apparently holding firm for that as you'd imagine and I think the I would imagine that the release cause now expiring plays into Tottenham's favor because they can sit there and say well look nobody paid that amount of money for him yeah however we can offer x amount for him but he did play against Chelsea yesterday um which I think was a a surprise and a bit of a disappointment to a lot of Spurs fans myself included he was out of the squad and then yeah exactly that um glasner said yeah because i don't know if you'd seen at stanford bridge he gave the palace fans a wave and he went over tapping the badge and all that type of thing obviously we saw morgan gibbs white during that in pre-season so we know that doesn't always mean anything yeah you don't know what that means that might be a i'm saying lads or that might be a i thought the same about romero at the end of last season when he was when he did the little walk around after the last game i thought that is quite that's clearly a goodbye i thought he's he's off and and hey he's still here and he's our captain now so yeah you just don't know do you we all have to read we all try and read into these things don't we but i mean glasner said i don't think it's a goodbye wave he's like he's continued to emphasize just from his post-match comments that like you know he's a professional, he's ready to remain involved, doesn't matter about the speculation surrounding him which is a good thing in a way yeah it definitely is that's the sort of player you want you don't want to you know, because the Iizak stuff needs a better taste doesn't it, when you see what Iizak's doing to Newcastle, it's not particularly pleasant, we've been on the receiving end of that before exactly, but then you have players like Luka Modric who didn't get his move to Chelsea but very much just got on with it.
38:34There wasn't any sort of histrionics from him or, you know, that's actually, that's, let's see where he ended up. He did all right to me. Exactly. Yeah, that's the attitude I would want to see. So, yeah, I don't, I would try not to sort of overreact one way or the other to that one. I just think, we just won't, we won't know until he is or isn't holding a shirt, will we? Well, they're saying, I mean, they're saying he's, you know, he's going to be playing on Thursday. But is there a part of you that, I mean, do you believe that this is, can this be like, do you think this is like a negotiating tactic by Palace?
39:11Is it them just saying, look, pay up or he's going to keep playing for us? Honestly, I've got no idea. I just can't, I can't figure out our transport business ever and how these things work. I mean, at the end of the day, he's their best player. So of course they're going to keep playing him. You know, I mean, to me, it suggests it's not a it's certainly not a done deal anyway because otherwise you wouldn't be seeing him in the squad you just i don't think you just wouldn't be so clearly there's still it means there's still questions there as to whether this is or isn't going to happen whether that means it it will or it won't i don't think it tells us one way or the other but it clearly shows that nothing's agreed yet i mean parish is we know he is a chairman that you know he's he is something of a personality he sticks up for the club you know he's a palace he's one of those sort of chairman that's apparently a palace fan and all that type of stuff as well um so i'm starting to get that little just a little creeping fear and i said it on twitter and people like no no not a chance palace need the money they're broke all this type of stuff but i still have that little feeling where they got booted out of the Europa League oh wait yeah Europa League that's what it is because it's Conference League isn't it so they got booted out of the Europa League they're kind of feeling a bit hard done by yeah Parrish can probably take some of the blame for that as well for them you know for not doing the paperwork the due diligence and everything there's just that part of me that wonders if he's going to have that wolf of Wall Street I'm not leaving moment where he's like actually Maranac has stood up to this lot I'm going to stand up to this lot as well they can pay us the 68 70 million that we want or we'll hold on to him and they've got form for this man they did this with Zaha for like Frizen Tiger you know we were linked with Zaha Arsenal were Chelsea were City were for years and years and years and I'm pretty sure they at all points said he's going to be he's going to cost you 60, 70 million pounds, pay up or do one.
41:19And they let him wind down his contract. They kept him in the team because they had that principled stance that that's what he's worth and that's what you're going to pay for him. And I just... In some ways, fair enough, isn't it? Exactly. Yeah, completely fair enough. We do it. We do it to other clubs. This is the thing that drives me nuts about our transfer business is we don't apply the same principles when we're buying players as we do with selling players. It's like two completely different clubs. I don't know why we expect all other clubs to accept ridiculous offers when we're, you know, holding out or still holding on to players that are quite clearly god-awful because we're still living in some fantasy land that we're going to recruit our money on them, which is never going to happen.
42:05But yeah, there is a bit of me that sort of thinks, OK, you know, yeah, fair enough, because you're right, they have been, and then they have been shafted. I think it's awful what they've done to Callis, to be honest i know technically they broke the rules and all that but it is very come it's it's a nonsense it's arbitrary isn't it like you look into it that have no that had no real impact i understand why the rule is there and but that is it's almost malicious compliance i think at this point that exactly that's the perfect term for it that's yeah that's entirely what it is oh that's the role and it's like but it doesn't apply to city or chelsea does it no we just we'll just drag those 114 charges on forever because they can afford better lawyers so it's yeah that whole thing's left to really just leaves a nasty taste I think so I can understand that might have sort of reinvigorated the palace leadership to go no do you know what we've been shafted enough already we're not going to let Daniel Levy shaft us as well I actually think we should probably just pay the money but that's the because because as you say he is their best player and I do also I look at Glasner he's a brilliant he's an undeniably brilliant coach um yeah I mean he will be if I I honestly think if Arteta doesn't do anything this season they'll probably bin him and go for somebody like Glasner I can see that entirely and that worries me um but you look at you look at him you look at players like Wharton, you look at a lot of the quality that they have really in that squad, a young growing quality squad they could be forgiven for thinking actually, you know what, let's go one better than last year, I mean they won the FA Cup so I doubt it's going to go one better but why can't we aim for trying to finish in top 8 top 6 or whatever, keep growing Well they could win the Conference League, West Ham did it West Ham can do it why can't they, again if they hang on to their better players But yeah, I think it's just one of those where there's a bit of me that just thinks, look, if we really want Eze, we're just going to have to pay the money.

45:41I just don't, I think it comes down to how serious we are about it. Like if we really think that this is the guy and he will add to our squad, I think you've, I think you've just got to pay them the money. I just don't think we can be faffing about with the, you know, can we get it down by another five million or whatever. At some point, you just have to, you just have to front up and get it done and that's the that's the thing that continues to frustrate me about about the way we do business because again you think you know maybe we will ultimately end up with as a maybe we won't i don't know but if we do you think well if you if you knew you wanted him and you just got that done a month earlier and you'd got him to bring on in the Super Cup final, that's potentially a different result, isn't it?
46:31And it's that, coming back to those marginal gains, it's those marginal, you know, those are the fine margins that make the difference at the top, top level. And it's, I just, I do, it does just continue to frustrate me how we leave it so late. Because I think we've made two excellent signings this summer, actually, I've got no complaints about the two signings we've made. I think they're both well-picked additions. Well-picked additions, that's a terrible bit of English. Both sort of clearly meet a need within our team. They fill holes. They make the team better. But at the same time, we have lost Hung Winson, who I know was not the Hung Winson of, you know, say four or five years ago.
47:14But he's still, you know, that's 22 goals he scored last season. We've got to replace those. and essentially we've lost Madison for the season. So really, in some ways, although it levels us up, it kind of levels us out. And it's that, you know, we're still in a position where really to push kick on, I know we'll have Kulu come back at some point, but we still need, I think we still need another couple really to firmly say, oh, we've got a stronger squad than we did last season. I think possibly we can achieve more with the squad we have than we did last season. I don't know if we'll win a trade fee obviously that was, when you say achieve it's the Daniel Levy version on forefront it's not actually winning anything but I think you'll see more solid you know we'll have more confidence I think in the way that they will perform sort of consistently across competitions so I think we'll do better with the squad that we have but the squad that we had still wasn't it's that la la land that Mr Levy's living in of competing on four fronts but competing on four fronts somehow magically with a smaller squad than everyone else so we'll see I would be buzzing I mean I would be buzzing if we signed Eze I think you'd be I'd be absolutely thrilled with that even if we didn't do any other business if that was our summer business was Kudas, Polina and Eze yeah I've been pretty happy with that, to be honest.
48:48It's funny, isn't it? Pretty good for a Tottenham window anyway. Well, yeah, but we did Kudus so early on into the window that it's almost like we've sort of forgotten that he was signed this summer as well. And all proven Premier League players as well. That's the thing. That's the difference. When you bring in proven Premier League quality and it instantly kind of elevates the team rather than, you know, we've got a lot of the future stars. I think we've sort of maxed out on that now. We've got that whole pipeline piece in play. I think now it's really where we've got to be making the moves is on the ready now players, which are the ones that we most struggle to get over the line, isn't it?
49:31But he'd be, I mean, he'd instantly be one of our best players as a, you know, like picture on the side of the stadium, all of it, right? Yeah. You know what I mean? And it would be, I just, yeah, a bit of that, bit of that stardust yeah a bit more of that into it which we because that that's that's a that's a tangible thing that's missing now since Sonny's gone since Kane's gone Madison you know even Kulisevsky's you know we don't have a clear idea of when he's coming back how long it will take him to get back up to match fitness when he is back anyway I will say I am actually quite excited about the idea of Kulisevsky playing under Thomas Frank though yeah kind of I feel like Frank might finally with his I guess with his tactical flexibility and his game by game flexibility I think suddenly we might have somebody that can utilize Kulisevsky who we've never really known anyway so I'm like yeah I think he's been that conundrum that nobody's been able to crack But he's been that conundrum, hasn't he?
50:38Nobody's known how to sort of crack. How do you use Kulishevsky? He's so good, but he's a bit of a chameleon. And in some ways, that's a good thing, because again, we need someone who can step into different places as other players begin to kind of drop out with injuries. But yeah, I'm also excited and interested to see what does Kulit look like in a Thomas Frank team. And that's a big boost for us. even when he does come back, you know, we almost forget that we have him at the moment because he's been out so long and you know it's going to be a world till he's back. But actually at some point when he does come back into the team, I think that'll be a big boost for us.
51:18Yeah, come back soon, Julio, I miss you. Well, I mean, because the thing is the Savino rumours as well still are not dying down. Fabrizio Romano his latest thing is essentially that Manchester City want it's been called an unrejectionable fee so apparently Spurs did come in with a 60-70 million euro offer so I guess in the high 50s that is of offer for Savinho seems to be that City want north of 70 mil they want a lot of money for him oh come on City I know exactly we let you have Kyle Walker we all know Guardiola and he yeah he was definitely showing his age wasn't he the other day I felt a little bit there but he got a nice round of applause did Kyle so you know after his comments about us winning the Europa League I think he endeared himself to people again there but I mean on Savino like we know Guardiola as a principal doesn't want players anymore who have who if they indicate any desire to leave whatsoever, that's it.
52:31That's his red line for it. It appears that's the case for Savino. He said he wants minutes. He wants to be playing in the World Cup. He wants regular football. He knows he'll get that at Tottenham. His people have apparently flown out to speak to City, to put pressure on them for this. So in a sort of strange way, you might say that it's potentially more hopeful than even the Ezzer deal. But I do just wonder if, because, I mean, he is, he's a very, very highly rated young player. I do just wonder if City are like, you're not going to get him that easily, Tottenham. Like, we're not going to give you this.
53:12Yeah, well, he's going to long you out until like the last day of the window. Maybe they'll wait until we've played them next weekend. Potentially. That is, I suppose, that is the sort of, again, marginal gains, isn't it? Yeah. maybe it's that maybe it's that hopefully it's that what i can't tell is whether is it are we going is it that we're going for as an answer venio seems to be is it one is this us covering our bases and it's one or the other i don't know well i mean that's that's what logic would dictate isn't it i mean the narrative at the moment is that we're going all out for both of them that the money is there we don't want to shout and scream about the fact we've got money to spend but you'd feel as though we do because we...
53:56That's right. Well, what was it? I mean, we bid£60-70 million to Mark Gay last transfer window, didn't we? I think was it the winter transfer window? Yeah, I'm still sceptical about whether that was ever serious or not. Well, yeah, but you know, apparently we did. Morgan Gibbs-White, there was talk that when it started to go a bit south of Morgan Gibbs-White, we offered Maranakis more than the release clause as well so there's you know there's there seems to be money there to spend still um it'll be quiet about our quiet about our business aren't we under langer it's you don't well aside from these ones seem to be dragging on a bit generally you don't you don't get the sort of long protracted sagas so much under it will probably maybe we get neither of them and some random will pop up from nowhere in like the last week of August.
54:54So we'll be like, what? I didn't know anything about this one. But I don't know. I just, there's a bit of me. You say that. We've been linked with Kubo. So he's a 24 year old Japanese player from Raul Sociedad. So in terms of like, you're saying like the random. Yeah, exactly. so I mean he may the thing is he may well be an exceptional player but as you say to your point I get it all the focus is on Eze and Savino and then we go 30 40 50 mil on somebody from out of the you know from out of nowhere seemingly I don't know I've given up trying to get to understand our our approach to transfers and just sort of wait and see what happens but i just i do i just think it's especially i just wish we just i wish we'd just pay the money and just get it done i think it's quite important that we do personally speaking yeah me too i think we're just i just don't know why which i don't think we're in a position to be treading that line of like oh it would be nice if we hadn't like lads we literally have no number 10 like Richarlison's not going to be able to score a scissor kick every single game, is he?
56:07Exactly, exactly. And you're not going to get many opportunities to sign an Ezza or whatever where you haven't got the rest of the bloody top four trying to sign him as well. So I just feel like this is one of those moments, isn't it, where we do or don't take the opportunity. And I think we're just a bit crap at doing that sometimes. I would like to see us just for once just go, do you know what? We're just going to pay the money and get it done. I've also got that horrible little feeling Arsenal swoop in 11th hour as well and think actually you know what let's have him exactly but we but this is what happens we allow this to happen because we that's where you you know your Williams and that come from is because we just faff about too much sometimes you just need to put the money on the table and get it done so did you see the United Arsenal game yesterday did you see Jokarez I actually didn't no I mean based on that performance alone, there might be a few heads at the top of Arsenal wondering if they maybe need to bolster their attacking option.
57:11So maybe he hasn't. He's still... Yeah. He turned out to be rubbish. I still look forward to his hat-trick in the North London derby. Obviously, yeah. You know what I mean? But it's not looking good. Early indications are not looking good. So that's one bit of light for us. But yeah, I mean, I know what you mean. pay the money, get Eze done, because he's good. He's good. I really like him. And I think he would make us so much better. He would slot into what we have really well. And it would just be, it would be nice for us not to kind of have another one of those years where it's like, we were really good and we would have been so much better had we, somebody that could do this.
57:54Exactly. Exactly. If you really, if you really want to win the Premier League and the Champions League and compete on four fronts these are the kind of deals you have to do. It's in your hands It's all in our own hands Yeah, just get on with it Tottenham, if you're listening. Get on with it Get on with it Did you see, just briefly on the Burnley game as well Did you see, I'm not entirely sure what the new rule is but keepers to stop them time wasting he got booked didn't he so I think the rule is and I didn't know this at the time I hadn't heard anything about this rule so me and my dad were very confused when this happened and then I found out from someone after the game what it actually was it's something to do with if the keeper holds the ball for more than 8 seconds I think it is the opposing team get a corner so basically you can't just stand there in your area holding the ball for ages and the ref was doing a countdown apparently with his fingers doing the one, two, three, every time.
59:04But, tell you what, there was no time wasting in that game after that, was there? I wonder if that will play into... I wonder how much that will change the dynamic of games. It's going to be interesting to see. Yeah, I'm a big fan of that change. Well, mainly I just wanted referees to book goalkeepers for time wasting more, but I'm like, oh, you've got you've actually got another level there that's that's even better than them I think because yeah you get a you know I don't know why it's always Hull City that comes to mind for me whenever I think of time wasting I think it's just a lot of painful games I've sat through against Hull but yeah you imagine like you're a Hull City or whatever and you've gone one nil up against City well you're not going to want to concede a corner are you so suddenly you're not going to have your goalkeeper hanging on to the ball for god knows how long it just sort of i suppose it just keeps that momentum going doesn't it and i'm here for it because i absolutely hate the time wasting obviously don't mind it when we do it after we're winning but it's the ones who turn up and from minute one even asked or did it against us last season
1:00:12yeah it's minute one time wasting i cannot stand but yeah that was a that was a real surprise and I really like that rule change and I might be the only time you ever hear me say that about anything, if rule change Yeah, am I am I like am I completely, am I having like a Mandela effect thing here but I seem to recall Joe Hart when he was playing for Man City having a real bastard game against us once, when he just kept hanging on to the ball and wasn't releasing it I seem to remember like my head fizzing in a game and I'm pretty sure it was Joe Hart I can't remember Ben Foster's the one that always comes to mind for me yes Ben Foster's a big one as well yeah yeah every game when we played Ben Foster it's just oh my god painful it's that run as if he's going to release ball and then stops points a bit and then yeah it is infuriating probably I don't know whether our teams find it as annoying as I do maybe it's partly because of us being Tottenham we're in that weird sort of middle spot aren't we where teams come and time waste against us because we're not you know we're seen as one of the better teams but we're also that that better team that always struggles to break down to play like that so it's like doubly frustrating when um when it's against us but no I thought that I like that as a rule I like it and yeah he did he didn't hang on to the ball again after that so maybe it's one of those where actually you won't see that rule getting implemented too much because people will clock on to the fact oh oh they're actually going to give a corner for that and suddenly it almost like you say it changes the way the game's being played i doubt you're going to see many games where there's like continuous corners being given because the goalkeeper's hung on to the ball but that's kind of the point i guess isn't it happens once and it doesn't happen again no um maybe i mean maybe we will be one of those two just on that point that you were saying about teams that are difficult to break down we did keep a clean sheet so I'm sort of hoping we are going to be one of those teams that's quite difficult to break down if what we hear of Frank is true that he can sometimes resort to murder ball then you know as long as we go out firing as long as we go out pressing the first half nab a goal like we did in Hong Kong against Arsenal first half all over him smash them to pieces and then second half 12-13 men behind the ball fine whatever let's just win I just want to win some games now you know I'm dropping my airs and graces Bill Nick will be turning in his grave and all that but still you know I just want to just win some games Tottenham please you know starved for it we've just got to stabilise at this point haven't we it's that we've just got we just need a little period where we're just not so bipolar with the amazing one minute awful that next we just need a little bit of a feels like we just need a little bit of stability for a while, but we're Tottenham, so we will always, it'll always start to get a bit, a bit of unrest if we're not entertaining.
1:03:21Exactly. That feels like a... But I don't think that is Frank. I think Frank can play, I think he can play entertaining football. I think it's just, again, it's the pragmatism, isn't it? It's that knowing, when's the time to go out and be the swashbuckling, you know, go for it, go for the throats, and when actually, like you're saying, is it time for a little bit of murder ball and that feels like a perfect place to end things Lara so thank you very much again for today 3-0 win that's it not the voice of doom anymore the voice of emphatic victories voice of pragmatic wins and where can people follow you if they're not already following you if you're exceptionally bored on Twitter it's amazingly a nickname that I gave myself when I was younger so how cool is that Lara don't really have a nickname but yeah it's Lars Arini 7 so L-A-A-Z Arini 7 on Twitter or X as it's now called I'm going to call it Twitter forever that's my one Brexit thing where I'm like you know it's always like Opal Fruits and that's always it'll always be Twitter we grew up with our parents calling Snickers marathon bars and stuff.

Jack is joined by Lara to look back on Tottenham’s opening day win over Burnley, where Richarlison lit up Thomas Frank’s debut with two superb goals including an outrageous bicycle kick. Mohammed Kudus was equally impressive, pulling the strings in midfield and combining brilliantly with Richarlison to give Spurs a new attacking edge.
We also dive into the latest twists in the transfer market, from the rollercoaster pursuit of Eberechi Eze with Oliver Glasner insisting he is staying put at Palace, to Spurs’ ambitious chase for Savinho at Manchester City.
Plenty to be optimistic about as the new season begins.
