In short

Tottenham’s Europa League-to-Champions League momentum, debate over performances vs results, and Thomas Frank’s tactical approach; plus Q&A on Spurs squad needs and player roles (including Palhinha/Bentoncúr “cement mixer” jokes) and Bardi’s top 5 cheeses.

Guests

Bardi and the host “Barley” (no other named guests). Both are Spurs-focused football commentators/fans discussing matches, transfers, and tactics.

Key claims

  • Spurs are winning but not creating enough; supporters are split, but the hosts argue the “we’re playing badly” narrative is overstated because the team is bedding in a new system and principles.
  • Frank is adapting game-by-game rather than dogmatically playing one way; this is framed as necessary due to Spurs’ lack of squad depth.
  • Pedro Porro is “undroppable” and a standout; Xavi Simons is compared to Modrić in how he may be used (wide now, possibly more central later).
  • Palhinha/Bentancur is criticized: Palhinha is mocked as a “cement mixer,” while Bentancur is said to be conservative/slow and not ideal in the six.

Notable examples

  • Champions League opener vs Villarreal (Spurs won despite low shot creation).
  • Europa League run: beat Bodo in semis; beat Man United in the final.
  • Discussion of Archie Gray’s limited minutes; debate over whether he should be loaned.
  • Transfer talk: Savinho, a left-back/extra center-back, and a striker; mentions Harry Kane’s physical dominance affecting Vuskovic.

In reality, if I'd taken my clubs, I probably would have come back from that family holiday single. It's a brilliant place, stunning beaches, five-star hospitality and some of the best hotels on earth. But for me, just getting out on those courses would have been the icing on the cake. 1:45Hello everybody, welcome back to Rule the Rouge podcast. Welcome back. Bardi, how are you doing, mate? I'm great, mate. It's nice to be back. I was reminiscing the other day on Instagram of the last time I was on here. We were in a very different world. The world looked very different. And yeah, it's great to be back in a cheery mood. I think at that point we were merely fantasizing about the idea of Tottenham winning Europa League, weren't we? We were talking about how it wouldn't be small time to really go all out and celebrate Europa League. But we won it and we went all out. And it wasn't a small time at all.

2:22It was some of the best things I've ever seen happen to this club in my lifetime. Absolute scenes, isn't it? I was trying to, because I was doing one of my sort of engagement farming posts on Twitter the other day about, imagine what the parade will be like when we win the Champions League. And just looking through all the pictures of the parade from the Europa, it's still, I mean, I was there. And I couldn't quite believe it. And even just looking back on the pictures, it still looks, feels, everything about it is surreal, really, isn't it? I think if we won the league, or the Champions League, I don't think we can comprehend how big it would be.

2:59The Europa League, like we beat Bodo in the semifinals and we won against the worst Man United team I've ever seen. But it didn't take away from what an achievement it was. And if somehow we win the Champions League, which is not out of the realms of possibilities the way we seem to defend, then imagine what the high streak would be like that day. I think it would cause some sort of rift in the space-time continuum, mate. I think the very fabric of the universe wouldn't be able to cope with the idea of Tottenham actually winning something massive. But we dare to do as it is. How are you? So obviously one of the byproducts of winning that Europa League was getting into the Champions League, which is very nice.

3:41I'm a massive fan of Champions League football. I enjoy the occasion very much so. we beat Villarreal in our you know our I was going to say debut game of the season but that sort of sounds weird our first Champions League game of the season we've beaten Villarreal a decent team a decent seasoned European outfit yet not many people seem to be that not many but I'd say it's been quite a Marmite fixture I think it's sort of split a lot of people how are you feeling about it? I think the problem is that we're winning games, but we're not looking great. So we score a goal without even taking a shot and we go the whole game with just one shot on target.

4:26So I think people that see football a different way are concerned about what we're not creating. They're concerned about what's not happening. Whereas a large chunk of us are happy just to be winning football matches again and not conceding goals. Last season, we played so badly and lost so many games that this season we can almost play bad, but still win games. And I think it's been overblown how badly we are playing. I think we're doing all right. We're bedding in a lot of players, bedding in a lot of new principles, bedding in a whole new system. And Thomas Frank, in my opinion, has just gone from painted by numbers to start with.

5:03Let's make ourselves solid and see what we can create. So I'm glad you said that because I was going to ask you if you felt like people were overstating quite how bad the performances have been. because I think for large parts of that game against Villarreal, we were playing some pretty decent football, especially in the first half. I feel like we were knocking it about pretty nicely. There were some nice little moments of interplay between some of the players on the pitch. I thought that Spence and Xavi at times connected quite well. It was a bit of a slimy game from Spence overall, but I think they connected quite well.

5:37It just feels like a team that's finding its feet. it's they're learning how to play a new system they're learning how to I guess fit to the ideals of a new manager new coaching setup and also there's a number of new faces in and amongst that team um but I don't I'm not really buying this idea that we're sort of sitting back in kind of you know two banks of two banks of five and not really going for it at all um and I can see to a degree sort of the concern, the slight concern, if you like, that we're perhaps not creating more from in terms of without field possession. But equally, as you say, I mean, we lost, what was it, we finished 17th anyway.

6:30I can't even remember how many games we lost in the league last season. And we conceded pretty much every single game we played i mean i'm quite happy with us at the end of the day we've played five games this season we've won four of them and conceded one goal yeah i don't like if people aren't going to be happy about that i just i kind of i don't quite get it you know this isn't the kind of the start of the nuno era where it was just let's empty midfield and rely on son or a penalty to get us through the match. We're not seeing that. We're seeing a manager who's adapting his team game by game, game by game.

7:10We're still learning a lot about his players. We're seeing new partnerships forged on the right. I think the right-hand side of us is really promising. Poro and Kuda seem to be working on something that could be quite nice. The left-hand side is brand new with Spence and Xavi. The forward line is different. Machado's barely played last season. and he's getting minutes now. There's partnerships building across the team and it's going to take time. We're not, as you said, we're not parking the bus. This isn't like Jack Santini's first few games where we just park the bus every time. We're adjusting and winning games, but we're not playing bad.

7:46It's just that we're not playing this free-flowing, attacking football that people seem to be obsessed with right now. But if you look across the Premier League, no one's really doing that apart from Bournemouth. And I wouldn't even call theirs free-flowing, attacking football. that's just like high-powered, run as fast as you can football. City, Arsenal, we seem to be following their template at the moment, which is a sensible way to go at the start. If Thomas Frank, he's renowned for having a slow start. His start, I think, at Bromby, his start at Brentford, everyone was worried about his first 10 games.

8:17And so far, his first 10 games have been pretty successful. I mean, I don't want to reduce his talents to this sort of single thing or Bournemouth's play to one player. But as you say there, I mean, the other outlier with Bournemouth is that they have one of the most physically and technically sound wingers in the game in Antoine Semenyo, who just seems to be able to take on entire teams of his own. You know, he's kind of got that almost like Gareth Bale thing where when he gets up to speed, nobody's laying a finger on him. So there's always going to be outliers with this stuff. and I think right now I'd be interested in your take on on Xavi Simmons because for me it's it's feeling pretty much identical to what happened with Luka Modric when we first signed him we brought him into the team banged him out wide and then realized actually we probably need him centrally and I I kind of hold faith in the idea that Frank seems to be somebody that's learning with each game as it goes.

9:14And he's been quite open about that. Because Xavi Simmonds, I think, has been, you know, I think he's been meaningful in lots of what he's done out on the left. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel like he was a bit wasted out there. I would quite like to see him play through the middle, see more of that creative spark through the middle. And, you know, be that we stick Tell or Mwani out on the left-hand side, I don't know. but I mean what do you reckon to him have you been impressed by start so far Tuesday night was the first time I've ever seen him in the flesh and he is small he is small so I get the kind of Modric comparison that he was pushed out wide to protect him I think right now I think right now Saar and Bergrao and then either Paulinho or Benton give us the stability that Frank wants and to get shabby minutes is that left hand side because Whereas I don't think the other option is Odebe or moving tail out there.

10:19Or Johnson, who doesn't really do anything in build-up. So I get giving him minutes there. I would like to see him move further inside. I think that will happen in time. He had a good shot against Villarreal. He got an assist from a corner against West Ham. But he hasn't set the world on fire. But those nice touches. And you can see he's a genuinely classy player. Pedro Porro has also been quietly one of our players of the season. I think he feels like he's pretty undroppable right now. Spence did. I think he's been fantastic as well, Spence. I'm not just diving on one sort of questionable performance, but my thinking is more, did that performance come as a result of Spence perhaps being a bit overplayed right now?

11:03and would you like to see a doggy sort of integrated back in on the left-hand side? Because I mean, I think quite a few people have forgotten quite how brilliant Destiny a doggy is and perhaps he hasn't shown that for a while because he's been half fit really. But, you know, I like the balance of Porro and a doggy. I still think it's a nice problem to have whether you, you know, what you do with a player like Jed Spence. but equally I would quite like to see a doggy get some more meaningful minutes at the moment I think he's been a victim of Ange's final season and injuries that have impacted him our whole defence looked terrible last year there was people who were quite willing to let Romero go this summer because of how he played last year I was one of them there was a few of us who were going yeah maybe he is too rash maybe he is too wild and he can't play and then this season I think Loki's been probably our best player.

12:01He's been incredible. So I think Udogi's suffered from that. And the fact that Spence has come in and played nicely, I think ultimately Udogi's ability to go on the overlap will suit Frank a bit better. And I just don't think, I think he doesn't want to rush him back because he has suffered with injuries. I think Spence has been overplayed, maybe. He's started every game. He's started nearly every game, I think. He's also featured for England. Maybe he does need a little bit of rotating out for a while but Poro has been unbelievable and everybody goes on about Paulina's and I'm on a podcast with two individuals who are obsessed with Paulina's passing but I think you can get away with Paulina's passing if you've got players like Poro and Romero behind him for who could create from deeper areas.

12:49I mean I was definitely leading the not leading the charge but as definitely part of the rabble rousers saying, that's it, Ben Romero, get Vuscovic in. And I mean, Vuscovic is obviously a very, very talented and exciting young player, but I don't know if you've seen the highlights of him. I think it was placed on a Hamburg, isn't it? He got manhandled, didn't he? By Harry Kane. Yeah, he got properly brutalised. And I mean, that's a baptism of fire, isn't it? Playing against Harry Kane, but still like, it was abundantly clear that the lad has a bit of way to go. I think it's more just in terms of, I think, is he still literally a child?

13:36I think he's about 17, isn't he? Getting done by Harry Kane, there are loads of centre-backs who are more mature and older and better than Voskovic who have been handled by Harry Kane. It happens. It's a baptism of fire. So hopefully he'll learn something from that. Because I guess he's so big that all the age groups he's played through, he's just battered those other children. And even he's gone to Belgium and he's just battered these old Belgian players. And now he's turned up and Harry Kane is just like, yeah, it's different levels, isn't it? I mean, Kane is a, I don't want to turn this into a Harry Kane pod.

14:13It doesn't take me much to get going on him. but he's actually a monster of a player. I hadn't really fully, like physically, I mean, I hadn't really appreciated it fully when he played for us. And I think he's actually gotten more stacked since he's been playing in the Bundesliga for some reason. I don't know if he's been told he needs to sort of change his sort of body physiology as he gets older or something. I'm not sure, but he's an absolute unit. And he gave Chelsea a horrible time last night as well, which is always good to see.

14:47So are you, I mean, how are you feeling generally about Frank? Do you mean, do you have concerns that going into the weekend, do you have concerns about the way we're playing? Or are you still just kind of like, this is all right? Because I think it's Brighton, isn't it, this weekend? I should have done my research. As good as in the head of the pod. But I mean, we're playing away at least. We don't seem to do too well at home. But playing away, Brighton will be quite an interesting test. I mean, they're sort of up-down at the moment. They haven't had the best start to the season, but we still know they're a team that's full of a decent amount of technical players.

15:27They play, or at least aspire to play, a pretty progressive style of football. How can you see us going into this one? Do you have worries about how we will line up, what Frank will do? Because I guess I will get to you talking, but one of the things that seems to be leveled at Frank constantly is that he is still setting us up as if we were Brentford, right? That we're kind of going to be on the back foot, that we are not there to create our own chances. We're there simply to stop the opposition from creating chances and then capitalizing on those breaks that we create. Do you think that's an unfair characterization, I guess?

16:05I feel pretty good. There's no secret that I hated our previous manager. I couldn't stand him and he he broke me when we went three nil down to Arsenal at home in um in the season that they nearly won the league and so I've been I've been desperate for him to go I've been desperate for somebody to come in with a with a with a plan of how to play football and perhaps Thomas Frank wouldn't have been the guy that I chose but I I fully respect what he's doing I really like what he's doing and the fact that he's gone to his tried and tested methods to start with is the right thing to do. Spurs, we were so fragile, man.

16:44We were so fragile, so easy to counter, so easy to break down that our defence lost all kind of confidence and we lost confidence in our team. It would just get to the point where you just didn't care anymore or you just expected to lose matches. And I don't think that's a bad place for Spurs to be. And I don't think I've ever been there as a Spurs fan where you just turn up and expect to lose, even And for all the kind of banter years and all the nonsense in the 90s, I still expected Spurs to do something. So the fact that Thomas Frank has immediately changed that is good. Going to Brighton, I think we will probably adapt.

17:19We will play differently. And I think we'll probably beat them because I just think he's got that ability to change up and match and manage other teams. Of course, I would like Spurs to go in and just not be bothered about how the opposition plays. but there are only certain clubs there's only a few clubs in the world that can just do that and those are clubs that have been set up to do that over a number of period of years have a manager in place who's been there and put the philosophy in and got his own players so the fact that Spurs are changing to beat different opponents is fine with me and I'm okay with that it's a method to win matches that I'm fine with Let's do some questions, Barley.

18:04I'll tell you what, actually, just quickly, what do you reckon success looks like? For you personally, what's a successful season for Spurs this year? I'm just interested to hear everyone's thoughts on that because it seems like nobody really has a yardstick for Tottenham right now, given we came 17th in the league last year but won a European trophy, right? Yeah, that's the weird thing of last season. The fact that we won a trophy skewed everybody's expectation. Now all of a sudden not winning a trophy will be seen as not be have a successful season but i think top five finish top four finish would be a real success and it's not to say that we can't win we can't win a trophy we can't win the fa cup or the league cup i think perhaps champions league would need to get very lucky but a trophy would be nice but i think top five is a is a successful year andreas thou loftager uh spurs therapy says could we actually name benton co as our new cement mixer i've noticed he's constantly waving and pointing when others around him have the ball rather than move into spaces and offer himself proper cement sometimes in that six palinia gets about like a busy bee i'm really down on benton co at the moment i i find people talk about there's a drop-off between Paulina's passing and Benton Kaur's.

19:27I think Paulina's the better player. I would rather have him in the six. I think he covers the ground better, he tackles better, and his passing is on a par with Benton Kaur, who I find really conservative and really slow. I just don't like him in the six at all. I don't think he's got the legs anymore. His kneecap fell off a couple of times. I don't think he's got the ability to play as an eight role, and especially when there's Bergvau and Saar already there. So I think phasing out Bentico would be the best thing that could happen to Spurs. I think he plays all right next to Pelinia, but I was staggered when he didn't get taken off the pitch the other night.

20:04He was absolutely blowing after about 50 minutes and then was just pretty much completely ineffective for the second half. Saar, I don't think it was Saar's best game by a long stretch of the imagination, but Sarr at least will always, always give you some drive, an engine in that midfield. Some explosivity, some shoot-ins, a physical... Make himself available all the time, constantly, in both attacking and defensive positions. And I, yeah, because I was going to ask you if you were having the shouts of Pelini being basically the new cement mixer. No. So, like we're talking about Frank's negative style, but I think the Paulini criticism is massively overstated as well.

20:54I'm on a podcast with two people who are concerned about, especially one of them are concerned about Paulini's progressive passing. Last season, I was desperate for us to sign Johnny Cardozo just because I've never seen him play. Just the concept of having a number six who could tackle and prevent a counter-attack was something I really, really wanted. So the fact that we've got one now, who's the best tackling centre midfielder in football, is great. Of course, he's not Caicedo in terms of passing and shooting. He's not Locatelli in terms of what he can do. But the fact that he can tackle and run around, actually run around, not just point like the other guy, is really, really important to me.

21:36And as I said, you can make do of his lack of progressive pass, if that's what you call it, by putting people next to him who can pass a ball. 25:21But I did see somebody say that apparently when Frank came in, he demanded to know whether or not Hojbjerg was just on loan or whether we still owned him or not, because he wanted to integrate him. And I was like, I don't want to fall out too soon with you, lad. But, you know, I didn't like that. You sure you're not just reading bankrupt's tweets that he was doing that all summer? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

25:46Big Al Spurs, this is a good one. Big Al Spurs at Big L Spurs on Blue Sky says, during Andrew's reign, Bardi said he wanted a, quote, Swiss Army knife manager who adapted to the circumstances rather than being overly wedded to one way of playing. I'm surprised they've never revisited this on the Extra Inch and therefore wondered if Bardi feels like Frank fulfills this brief. Well, the Extra Inch not reviewing something when I've been correct. It happens all the time. I was going to say, isn't that the MO? Yeah, we have a correction section at the start of every pod, but we never put in all Wendy's and Nathan's wrong takes.

26:29Otherwise, we'd just end up doing podcasts on those. But I'm going to sound proper football man here, but it really annoys me. It really annoys me when people say, ah, this player can't do that. Just like, fuck off, mate. Like, he can't beat his man or he can't pass progressively. I'm like, he's a professional footballer. He could pass progressively if you give him the options to pass progressively. I'm not saying he's going to like outside the boot, bend one around the corner. But if you give Paulina, if Paulina wins a tackle, looks up and he's got a player available to him, he'll pass him the ball in a progressive position.

27:09So it really annoys me, like the specialization of people looking at football. A quarterback can only do this, a running back can only do this, or a blocker can only do that. I don't think that's true in football. I think footballers can do way more, especially at the elite level. And I'm really happy that we have a manager who's able to adapt and just not stuck to playing his way of football. Poster Coglu, he came from Celtic, came to Spurs, 10 amazing games, and he just got wrapped up in his own mythology. technology making jokes and talking about just copying pep and he needed to adapt quickly to change to the circumstances that were happening around him and he didn't and i think frank will and already has and that's what i wanted i wanted a manager who could adapt to whoever we're playing because there's there's so many different teams out there and we need to be able to move with move with the punches and everything else yeah this this sort of dogmatic approach seems to be phasing out I mean some people probably object to me saying that Pep is a kind of system man that's pretty dogmatic but it I mean it remains to be seen we could be sat here at the end of the season Manchester City have won the league again but it does feel like the shine the aura is coming off even him a bit right now um and you can afford to be you can afford to be like Pep if you if you've got Haaland and then you've got 500 million pounds to spend on individuals who you don't need to play immediately so Cherki, Aitnori who's injured but you know he can he can rest those players like he did with Grealish he bought Grealish for 100 million and then said you know what you're going to sit on the bench for one year until you fully understand what we're doing Spurs we buy a 50 million player like Xabi and he's got to start immediately because we can't we don't have the squad depth to do it.

28:59Pep and Arteta can get away with just having one approach because they've spent billions on their team. We can't do that. We need to be able to roll and change. It's quite mad looking at how, just sort of remembering how good Jack Grealish is at football really, when he's not being forced to play in a system. I know it's sort of been held up as like this gotcha for Pep, but he got some good times out of Jack Grealish as well. And I dare say that Everton aren't going to do anything this season. So, you know, they can enjoy it. They can enjoy it. It's good to see Jack Grealish enjoying his football again.

29:34But, I mean, to a degree, I'm not really that sort of wedded to the idea of Jack Grealish's success. But it's just, you know, I do quite like his type of player. We've always said he could be a Tottenham player, if you like. But I don't know. It's just quite interesting. It's quite interesting to see how people talk about Pep ruining players and stuff because they have to be sacrificed to his beliefs, if you like. It's just funny to see this lad come out and actually remind everybody that he is this incredible free-roaming flair player in the final third of a match, which is kind of perfect for a club like Everton, isn't it?

30:11That's all got similar ideals to Spurs. I mean, we could see that with Savinho. Savinho was this kind of flair winger that did amazing things in Spain, gone to City and he looks a bit kind of basic. And we're being linked with him. And he's one of those that I think if he comes to Spurs, we just unlock him and just give him that freedom to not always check back. I think he will. I think we'll be back in for him in January, to be honest. I think that one's not dead. and it's quite heartening as well knowing that him and Xavi Simmons have a good relationship as well and have played together pretty effectively previously as well so you know watch this space Carl Anthony Townsendjoyer at Tony Forever says what do you think the plan with Archie is and is the current coaching staff stunting his development with the current usage I think Archie Gray is a conundrum I can't get a read on him.

Read the full transcript

31:14I know people say he could be a fullback. I think he's a talented lad, but I just don't know where he fits in our game right now. And I think he's probably being stunted because he's not getting minutes. I think the wise thing would have been to loan him out, but then we would have lost another kind of English player. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. He's a terrible centre-back. But I think he offers something in midfield, but not over what Sartre offers or what Berggrout offers at the moment. I mean, what would you say? Is he a number eight? Is that kind of... Because you couldn't have him as a six, I don't think, really, not in the Premier League.

31:53And I don't think that's just about his age and about his physicality right now. I just don't feel like he looks like that type of player. No, he's not like a deep building. He can't build the play from deep as a six and he can't get around and tackle like Paulina does in a six role. So he ends up kind of getting pushed into the eight role, which is just like you can run around a bit. You can get up and down the pitch and can pass a bit. So he plays an eight. I think he's a little bit lost in terms of positioning right now. It's funny though, because when I watch him play, when he does play for Spurs, you can still see, even if it's just in flickers from time to time, that there is a lot of talent there.

32:36He's clearly a really talented player. And I just sort of wonder, you know, like the Alex Scott lad that ended up going to Bournemouth. It is Bournemouth, isn't it? Yeah, he went to Bournemouth. Spurs fan was sort of heavily linked to Spurs for a long time. Who's having the time of his life now? Looks like, you know, one of England's kind of exciting young players that will maybe get a move to a bigger club in the next few years. And you sort of can't help but wonder if that was probably the trajectory that Gray should have gone on. He was very close to making that move to Brentford under Thomas Frank.

33:10I think we came in and nicked him. I don't know, you feel for the lad to a degree. But I haven't given up hope on him. Like you say, it's hard to really know where he fits in because I felt like at times for a long time last season that him and Bergval, Berrival were sort of neck and neck. I thought there were pros and cons to both of them, but I don't know. I mean, I don't know what protein shakes Bergvall's been having this summer because he's come back a different player. He's come back like physically a beast and just, I don't know, just seems to be so much more switched on to the pace of everything.

33:56I mean, it's two man-in-the-match performances in a row now for the lad. And you do forget he's 90. I don't know if you saw, did you see Polini's interview where he was after the Villarreal game. He didn't know. He was sort of saying he didn't even know that Beauvoir was only like 18, 19. He was saying he couldn't believe it. And they were all sort of pissing themselves at him because he was saying that. But he was like, yeah, this kid plays with like, you know, the maturity and he's brilliant. He's still got stuff to learn, but hopefully I can teach him stuff. And I think that's, you know, that's one of those things I think is kind of, I think overlooked at times when, when you bring a player like Pelinia into it, you know, we've, we've all sort of spoken at length at times about, you know, Ledley King talking about Nudorin Neybet being alongside him and learning from him.

34:49And, you know, we saw Leicester City having Cambiasso in there, you know, in, in the season before they went and won the Premier League and the positive impact he had a lot on a lot of the players around him and stuff. You know, I think with players like Bergvall, players like Grave and Stil Saar, they will have something to learn from a player like Pelina, I reckon. That's just really weird you said that. Are you in our Discord? Because I said those exact words today. Like King learnt loads from Neybet. And I also remember when Davids came in, we learnt a lot from Davids. But throughout football history, there's been individuals who've learnt.

35:27Like Pirlo was a number 10 and then he played alongside Baggio and Guardiola at Brescia and he adapted his game and become one of the greatest deep line playmakers in the world. So I really think there is something to gain from buying these kind of slightly older individuals and playing them alongside the youngsters. In terms of development, I think Gray, I really liked his enthusiasm to play centre-back, right-back, left-back last season. but I'm always concerned when that happens to individuals that they they keep getting pushed into roles which don't suit them and then unless they unless they finally kind of settle on a role and decide that's what they're going to do it happened a little bit with Dier as well he was midfield center back pushed around the team and we didn't know kind of where to put him right back even sometimes so it's good that they're flexible but I would like Gray to pick a place pick a position and you know what you mentioned bournemouth he would be great at bournemouth i think you could just see that working for him eric dyer i remember he's like his whipped crosses they're almost beckham-esque at times dyer when he played out on the right which was uh yeah sight it was a sight to see i mean i also remember newcastle lobbing the ball over him at home once at right back and it was just like then he tried to turn and chase back It was like, okay, yeah.

36:46That's a problem. He's quite a good career, Eric Dye, to be honest. He's played Spurs at the top level, played loads of Champions League football, loads of international football, won the title at Bayern. Now he's playing in Monaco. It's quite a nice life, that, really, to be honest. Grew up in Portugal, speaks a foreign language, really nice guy, scored a free kick for England at a European tournament. that he's had low-key, he's had a great career. I used to take the mick out of him, but, you know, fair play, he's had a great career. I listened to him on, what's his name, the cycling goalkeeper, Ben Foster.

37:26Ben Foster. Yeah, he did, I don't know if you heard it, he did a podcast with Eric Dyer. Dull as dishwater, I wouldn't recommend it if I'm honest with you. There's, you know, an hour and a half of my life, I'm not getting back. TG Tom Sublime says the Lewis family want to back Thomas Franklin D. Spurs of Elk. I see what you've done there. They've handed him the keys to a war chest of 220 million euros and told him to buy at least three players to strengthen the squad of 16. Where on the pitch do you spend the money? this is that i always get these like sometimes i sit there and nathan would just list players i've never heard of and like i see this when nathan when nathan posts his graphics when he's like well i've identified exactly what we need for this now we'll just nod along like yeah yeah good good shout nathan pulls out names of um egyptian players or north african players i've never heard of i'm like who um so i'm not gonna name players but apart from savinho let's sign let's sign let's fix the left wing so let's sign savinho so that's about seven email yeah yeah i i think i would like a fourth center back someone to cover um to cover romero van der ven i i love kevin danso i love i really i've grown so fond of him he's such a nice guy um so a fourth center back so we don't ever have to play Dragoosin or Ben Davies there.

39:01Do you reckon he is going to? I think he's going to like Dragoosin though. Yeah, probably. Yeah. There will be moments where he'll just like sit deep, insert Dragoosin, defend the penalty area. Yeah, and we'll be like, no! Again, Frank, please. I've tried to defend you to all the people, sort of digging you out after four or five games and now you're doing this to me. Dragoosin. It is quite amazing how us as Spurs fans, we've always turned up our noses at the long throw. And now all of a sudden we're like, oh, here it comes. Get in, go on, get on. Come on, Bergwahl. Launch it. Because Bergwahl took one long throw right in front of me against Villarreal.

39:39And everybody next to him was like, yeah, go on, chuck it. But we spent so long criticising it. So a left winger, a centre-back, and I think another full-back would make me really happy. probably a left back so we can move Spence to be the first reserve on the right hand side or just rotate Porro and Spence and then have Destiny and another that side but I'm not saying names because I don't know other than Sevigno yeah I've got to say like I don't know I'm going to say I think we need another striker mate I think we need yeah you know Richie started the season well and I want to have faith that he can continue in that vein but you know his legs are gone already well you know um yeah i mean dom solanke is he seems to have been hit by the kind of well i mean one thing i will say again nothing really that substantiated but i have heard through the grapevine that apparently bournemouth actually had to manage his kind of training routine pretty carefully um when he was playing for them.

40:52Yeah, there were a few underlying issues there that we seem to have exploded after a season of Angeball. I'm not going to blame Ange Postacoglu for everything. People don't like it. I need to move on. Okay. But Dom Solanke, I actually really, I do rate as a player. I think sometimes he, you know, when he's put in those sort of crucial positions, when he has to score, sometimes he just doesn't seem to just come instinctively to him. I think he has a little tendency to overthink things, but I still appreciate his endeavour. I like what he brings to that centre-forward position. I do think he's a very talented player.

41:31I would like to see us have though just a machine again, a goal-scoring machine, just despite how he came back. Levy's gone now. They fell out. Let's just have Harry back. We're re-entering the era of the lump up front right we just we just sold the best lump there's ever been up front you know which probably undersells harry kane's uh majestic ability a bit but but you know i mean like that that tree trunk that newcastle have just bought he's unbelievable what a player it's like a massive burbatov it was another one i didn't i didn't i watched saw i watched them in the euros and you're under 21s the highlights and it was like, yeah.

42:14But I really like Cesco. I think I'm always kind of drawn towards strikers with a right foot and I really like Cesco. Unfortunately, he's gone to Man United and that's his career ruined. But yeah, I could see that in Italy in the 90s, they had like the season of the big, the seven sisters where they had seven teams who could all win the league. And I kind of, I do fantasize about the same thing happening in the Premier League where you just have seven teams with seven amazing number nines and it becomes like a shootout. Which number nine is going to win the league for you? I don't think Richarlison or Solanke, as much as I like Solanke, has got those numbers in him.

42:52And I don't think Kolo Marani has it either. So I would like to see Spurs sign an amazing number nine. But I think that how much should we get to spend? I think we're going to, I don't think it's a priority right now.

I know he's a bit of a crock as well now, unfortunately, but can we just tap up Juventus for Vlaovic again? He's sort of looking like he's scored some pretty tasty...

44:30I think he scored a couple against Dortmund the other night. At least one of them was a pretty tasty finish off his right foot as well yeah yeah i mean it looks like he's sort of coming back up to speed again a bit he has been in full donkey mode for like two seasons though they hate him they've they've really hated him at uve do they yeah he's well he's been a real since he was amazing a few of tina he was amazing yeah and then he went there and he just looked like a dud but then there's been a lot of turmoil at uve but yeah he looks like it looks like he's coming back into form. I mean, Colin Moani was all right at Juve, actually, wasn't he?

45:04So, I sort of have forgotten that we have kind of signed him, and it seems to be this sort of haziness as to whether or not we've got an option. I've seen contrasting reports on that, so I'll be interested to see him when he gets up to speed a bit, because I have to say, I did think he looked like a bit of a donkey the other night when he was playing for us, but he's not playing any football for quite some time. and that that he was hamstrung by the fact he got booked immediately and ridiculously so as well i felt but you know there's there's something about being in the stadium when a player makes his debut and there's that expectation that as soon as they get it they're going to do something mad yeah or something brilliant and i always remember being there when mido had his debut and he did this he jumped in the air and did this flick and everybody just went wow and that kind of like set the tone for his career at Spurs.

45:57Even though it wasn't that good in the end, that was probably the highlight of it. So when Mouane got the ball, and I think he couldn't see from where I was sat, but it looked like his first touch took it out play for throwing. Everyone around us just kind of went, oh, like, oh no, what have we got? At least we've only got him on loan. Yeah. So there's a, I thought I'd chuck this one in, Barley, because you responded to it. um ricky at ricky tfc says uh if somebody tells you to meet at a specific spot to walk back to seven sisters after a match do you a meet the person that the spot mentioned b start walking away and name spots you've already passed in the hope to meet or c blob off your mate for a line so the line by off got me i've not actually heard that expression but i quite like i need to defend myself so under Ange I would leave at 75 minutes jump on a line bike and I'd be at Tottenham Hale my record on like according to line bike I never put it on Strava was like six minutes it was amazing you're the rival it's great so jump out the stadium dash down the stairs jump on the line bike and go but I said to Ricky in Beaver Town before the game said we're back in the Champions League Ange is gone I'm gonna stay till full time I stayed till full time final whistle went and I I wandered out and I stood by the corner pin and I waited ages.

47:24I waited forever and I messaged him, are you coming? And I thought maybe he'd blobbed off without me. And then as I was waiting there, a friend of mine I hadn't seen in ages turned up with his dad and his uncle. And they're both old. And I thought, okay, I'm going to walk with them because they're walking really slow. And then Ricky can catch me up. But Ricky walks even slower than them. And I didn't get home till midnight anyway. So I'm sorry, Ricky, but fucking hell. You don't need me to hold your hand sometimes, but I do apologise. It's because he goes to those dirty burger vans after the game as well.

47:56He loves them. No, it's before the game. He goes to Enjoy Cafe before the game and they serve the straightest sausages you've ever seen. The baked beans are bizarre, the colour of them. That's just not normal tomato colour. He also, Ricky, put a rat emoji on the tweet as well, just so you know. The thing about Ricky is, I love Ricky and I'm sure you love him as well, but he gets an idea in his head and it just becomes the truth and he'll never forget once as a joke i said to him i'll drive you to the stadium just give me some petrol money and it's turned into this thing that i i now require an invoice for petrol every time i give someone a lift for fuck's sake and once i went to the bar and i didn't no one was there so i went to the bar bought a drink came back everybody was there and i just had one pint and it's become that but it doesn't buy rounds so like fuck's sake man sounds like he's got you banged the right so mate yeah but he just makes it he makes it truth uh which is what one of the things i do love about him just propagates propagates yeah he loves it the thing about rick is oh whenever there's anything any hint of any sort of gossip anywhere i'll just have this whatsapp notification I'm like, it's him.

49:09And he loves it. He loves it. Right. Campione Coise at Bakubi Coise says, ask Bardi what he's most looking forward to about Anja's mighty forest. Did you, and I get it. I know people are being a bit sensitive, right? I know the man won us. They won us a European trophy. He won us that. Great. But you can still, is about making fun of people. It's about Schadenfreude. Is that how you say it? So for him to say, it's not going to be a year, it's not going to be weeks, Wednesday is where you'll see Ange ball. And then they drop a two goal lead and lose 3-2 to Swansea. You have to appreciate the humour behind that, surely.

49:58Come on. There's no... We loved Harry Kane and the fact that Harry Kane left Spurs and in his first season after leaving Spurs didn't win anything. Like, of course it's funny. Like, who wanted Harry Kane to go to Bayern and just sweep up in his first season without us? This is what happens in football. Bostokoglu giving it all of that. They go into Forest and if he gets relegated, that's pretty funny. And even like you said, he loves himself so much. Oh, you wait till Wednesday and then they get beat to Swansea. So I don't want anybody to leave our club and do better. I just don't want it to happen because that means that they're achieving more success.

50:36If I could, I would have 19 teams relegated a season. I don't want any other team to do anything of positivity unless it's preventing Arsenal from doing it, you know? Especially not Maranakis' lot as well. Exactly. I don't give a shit. So Forrest won a couple of cups in the 70s. I don't care. Exactly. And if he'd gone to Swindon, if he'd gone to Bournemouth, I would wish them evil as well because I don't want anybody to have success apart from Tottenham. Yeah, that was one of those things. I wasn't having this. I can understand if you don't want to wish ill towards Postacoglu. But some of the people being like, I'll be keeping an eye on Forrest's results.

51:18No one. Come on, man. Like, come on. No. That's a bit arsenal, that. That's a bit soft. Well, because it's also kind of like working on this assumption that we're absolutely, definitely assured to finish above Nottingham Forest. You can kind of do that patting on the head thing if you think they're going to squabble around in the bottom half and do nothing. They spend a lot of money. They've got a lot of good players. Ange won as a European trophy last year. What's to say he's not going to go and win them one? People have said that as well. Oh, I hope he wins them the Europa League. I don't. I don't.

51:54I don't want to see Nottingham Forest win a Europa League. I don't want to have our achievement devalued by them doing it. Exactly. Debasing it. Do you know what I mean? Exactly. Waking their feet over it. Villa. I don't want Villa touching our trophy. In fact, I wish they would scrap the Europa League. I don't want anyone else touching that trophy. I don't want to see anyone. Yeah, I don't want to see it in the hands of everybody else. But Ryan Mason, I get. I hope West Brom get promoted. I hope West Brom do amazing things. But I don't want anybody that leaves Spurs to succeed in life. I don't want him to get run over.

52:28but I'd be quite happy with him never winning another football match. You don't want Villa's smelly hands all over our sandwich, do you? You don't want someone else touching your sandwich. Can you imagine them lot with that trophy driving me around the bench? Disgusting. CM on the Royal Roost Discord says, it was more just a comment to you, buddy, which was, I just want to say that he's done God's work going super early super early on Ange against the Extra Inch Discord community that often came across as pretty pro getting walloped every week to preserve one man's utter tactical inflexibility.

53:12So there you go. I would like to defend Extra Inch Discord to say it was mostly anti-Ange for very early. We had one individual who kept a list of 20 Ange performances to remember when something good happened. And he used to update that daily. I think number one on the list was Tamworth. Like, never forget Tamworth. Going to extra time against Tamworth is what I would say to anybody who feels any kind of passion towards Poster Coglu. I mean, it is actually mad. Like, we very nearly lost that as well. You know, they were just millimetres from beating us in that. I went back and watched the highlights the other day because obviously after the game, I never watched it again.

53:55It was gone. but I thought, let me go and revisit this and it was amazing how close we were to losing that match. I mean, I honestly think, and I really don't mean this as like, you know, hyperbole or whatever. I really think that's the worst performance I've ever seen from Tottenham Hotspur. I think that's worse than the Mourinho getting us knocked out with their gaffer in prison in the conference league. I think that the 90 minutes against Tamworth, I think is genuinely the worst I've ever seen Spurs, ever. It's worse than the losing to 10 men's city when we were a 3-0 up and that was bad. John Mackham.

54:32The John Mackham game, isn't it? It's worse than, it's definitely worse than losing to a manager in prison. Were you there? Yeah. Which was great. I mean, it was a moment in history, wasn't it? But yeah. So is it, I mean, was it a bit of a civil war on there? Or was it all right? Towards the end, it was, I think by January. You've got enough patrons already, Boddy. You don't need to sell it that much, all right? Just give us the juicy stuff. No, no. By January of 2025, it was pretty anti-Ange in there. It was, yeah. I think even Nathan, by early 2025, kind of understood that the writing was on the wall for Posta Coglu.

55:16Nathan's quite good at keeping his cards close to his chest, though, isn't he? He can just drop out sort of suggestive things that will say, I'm quite clear. If you're on the same page as me, you will see that I'm quite clearly anti this position. However, he's not like one of us, mate. One of these proper football man chess-beating types that has to blur our kind of blunt takes out. That's the thing. The theory behind everything Nathan says is spot on and really correct. I agree with it, but then sometimes I'm like, no, I don't care. This guy can't pass. He could tackle a lot. and I'm just perfectly happy with someone I could tackle.

55:56Somebody called Chris Lanson Miller at Windy Coy's on Blue Sky has said you need at least one food question. One that came up on our Discord. You lot, you never, you relentless promotion of everything. One that came up on our Discord recently was top five cheeses. And Windy's list is halloumi. halloumi porcelain so plain mozzarella extra mature cheddar brie i mean that is that is a that's a tim sherwood's cheese board right there but i could have named i could i reckon i would have got three of those without without knowing because he's got a funny stomach he can't he can't handle flavor but i thought he would have gone mild cheddar though actually i was surprised he extra mature cheddar i mean cheddars the only good thing about cheddar is the way it melts i think it melts wonderfully but otherwise cheddars the fact that everyone's got it in this fridge kind of sums it up i also i really like mozzarella which is fine but in certain places you know what really annoys me at the moment burrata everybody obviously like you go to a restaurant oh i just get the burrata starter fuck it come on what is it the ones is it because of these, you know, these unrefined English types tucking into Italian cuisine thinking they're classy.

57:22Is that what it is? No, it's just so boring. Like the burrata doesn't actually taste of anything. You've just got to chuck a load of balsamic vinegar on it, a load of olive oil, tomatoes, and it's all right. But you get one between two and you end up chasing each other around the plate for it. So it wouldn't be on my list. If I was stuck somewhere, I'd always take Parmesan cheese. that's just that that's the greatest cheese you get good quality parmesan you can you can have it just take slices off it and eat it um you can't make pasta without it you can kind of substitute in pecorino every now and then but i like um parmesan i like gorgonzola i do like a stilton as well something that packs a bit punch to it stinking a real stinking bastard yeah i mean i love all that you know uh you know parmesan's one of those that the uh you know like the carnivore bros carnivore diet lot who love all um you know they'll just drink milk from a cow's udder kind of thing unpasteurized and all that type of stuff they love parmesan i think there's one of them what's his name he does all stuff with like rfk now and stuff as well in america saladini yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah he he was just yeah he he always talks about how he just carries he'll carry a block of parmesan around with him because it's unpasteurized cheese yeah um and he gets so passionate about it i mean i've never seen a man who looks quite as like unhealthy as he does talk about like the health benefits of just eating meat and unpasteurized dairy all the time there's one on instagram an english guy gingerhead dude who talks about carnival dice and everything he goes oh i'm gonna make a a healthy pizza or a healthy this all he does is just make omelets everything is everything is an omelet with he just shreds chicken oh here we go here's the base he's gonna shred some chicken and put some egg in it and then grate some cheese everything's a fucking omelet that guy you have he's got no joy in his life like you can eat healthy without eating processed and you can have a bit of variety in your diet um but yeah i i kind of and it has like no fruit and he looks terrible like he looks anemic someone someone needs to check his bloods he did a um he did a healthy fish and chips and he made i can't remember how he did the fish how he like got around battering the fish but the chips were like slices of chicken yeah these are the chips that will go with your go with your go with your fish already i don't know and he uses it for breadcrumbs he uses um dried chicken skin that's been blended and that's how he like does his breadcrumbs it's mad these people it's bizarre like again but it's no good the other thing is as well all this sort of the protein obsession you clog your kidneys up as well is it kidneys or your liver one of the two you don't look i think there's like a finite amount a protein that your body can process every single day yeah i'm gonna get all the fitness bros i'm gonna go at me now what would you know you're fat bastard what are you doing talking about diet plans and stuff fair point um sounds like you should um a little a little patreon side hustle to do some do some protein diet plans and sell them i do it should i try it yeah maybe i'll i'll get on that um one year's time you're just ripped and then you're just waiting omelets that's it just omelets and chicken finger crisps um mate it's it's uh it's been a pleasure thanks coming on again body um it's wonderful about you lot and your uh shameless self-promotion but is there anything anything you want to promote at the moment um check out i'm right for the bbc which is a place i've never thought i'd end up so check out my my regular blogs on there and then if you want to if you want to get tactical and you want to hear about stats and stuff like that but you're I want to hear from a real proper football man like myself, then sign up to our Patreon, The Extra Inch.

Jack is joined by Bardi from The Extra Inch to unpack Tottenham’s Champions League win over Villarreal, a result that has split the fanbase. Are Spurs right to prioritise clean sheets, or is the lack of creativity a growing concern?

The pair dig into the Joao Palhinha debate and whether he’s a valuable presence or, as Bardi has been known to call certain midfielders, a “cement mixer.” They also look ahead to Brighton, asking whether Thomas Frank has struck the right balance between pragmatism and progressiveness in his Spurs setup.

Listener questions include whether or not Frank lives up to the “Swiss army knife” manager Bardi once wished for during the Ange era? What’s the long-term plan for Archie Gray? And, most importantly, what are Bardi’s top five cheeses?

All that and more.
