In short

Tottenham’s pre-season and early-season worries under Thomas Frank—especially squad depth, lack of attacking “plan B,” injuries to James Maddison and long-term absence for Dejan Kulusevski, and the club’s transfer approach. They also discuss the Harry Kane interview/“exclusive” posted on Spurs’ channels after Kane’s move to Bayern, and what it means for Spurs’ relationship with its former captain.

Guest backgrounds

The episode is hosted by two Spurs-focused podcasters, Jack and Phil (Rule the Roost). They speak as long-time supporters analyzing transfers, tactics, and squad management.

Key claims

Spurs spend but not on “glitzy” marquee transfers; wage spend and conservative recruitment limit star power. The Morgan Gibbs-White deal failing is framed as evidence of weak contingency planning. Pre-season attacking output looks insufficient (Bayern game used as a warning sign, though they stress it’s still pre-season). Youth players are loaned out rather than integrated, leaving gaps.

Notable examples

Madison likely out for most of the season; Kulusevski also injured; Sonny and Kane/Son era ended. Links/targets mentioned include Eza (Eze), Nico Paz, and McCarty; Bayern and PSG are upcoming key matches.

2:17They say, Some pass. Kane takes it down and does what he does. It's a celebration against his former club. Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Rule the Roost podcast. Welcome back for a new season. I mean, I say a new season. I spoke to you maybe a week or so ago on this, Phil, but for the sake of the magic of podcasting, it's a new season. Hello, Phil. How are you doing? Yeah, all right. It is a new season, isn't it? And we're all filled with such positivity and encouragement, aren't we? Going into it again, Jack, as always. It's always like wipe the slate clean and learn from my mistakes and go and do something good.

3:02I do want to say up front, right, I actually am on a certain level filled with quite a lot of optimism about this season. And actually, I'm really looking for it. We've spoken about this before, Phil. I can't remember if it's on the pod or off it, but we've definitely spoken before about that gets to this point in summer where you've been crying out for the season to end at the tail end of it. But you get to a point in summer where you're like, I want the football. I almost, I need the football back. I need that kind of structure that it provides to my life. I want it back, you know, and I'm there.

3:36Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I mean, it is how I kind of live my life or sort of track my life around, certainly week to week. I'm like, what was I doing Wednesday? oh hang on so I must have been at home and I watched the game oh yeah so it's Thursday I did this and that just gives me a bit of like a tentpole to kind of work from right in my brain but without it it's just I don't know what's going on just kind of floating down the river it's just all zoom meetings and work deadlines isn't it that's what it is yeah yeah um but I am looking forward to the season being back I am looking forward to seeing Thomas Frank working with this group of young players but equally also you know I'm getting to the point of the summer where there is a creeping level of concern about I would say our squad depth especially now with the injury to James Madison um like where are you at at the moment mate because I don't even just from our conversations I don't get the feeling that you're in the kind of it's all a catastrophe Daniel Levy's done it again this is dreadful but I think we're all of a similar persuasion aren't we where we're like we could probably I think what's turned my head a little bit is the lack of a plan b quite clearly a lack of a plan b for the Morgan Gibbs White deal not working out yeah yeah and that's just it for me I mean you know and I think partly the fact that we suddenly felt like we were doing things differently wasn't it with like the kudos Morgan Gibbs White and then the Adam Warren stuff We all kind of got wrapped up in that a bit.

5:06And, you know, the Morgan Gibbs-White thing aside, the Adam Morton thing was just a weird rumour that popped up, but we all kind of got carried away with it. And then we've had to sort of climb down from that, you know, from our own expectations. But you are right. I mean, the fact that this has gone on now, the fact that we thought we had Morgan Gibbs-White signed, which was great, and then that's clearly not happening. And quite soon after it, maybe within the first week of that not going ahead, it did feel like, oh, actually, this feels like it's probably not going to happen, right? the fact that we haven't pulled the trigger on our apparent second choice target makes Morgan Gibbs-White just feel like another opportunistic one rather than part of this big sort of strategy, you know what I mean?

5:49And that's what kind of has sort of bugged me a bit over the last few weeks, as you say, and, you know, compounded by the fact that Madison's now out for the majority of the season, probably. And then we watched the Bayern Munich game, which, you know, you take a bit of it with a pinch of salt, right? It is still pre-season. We know not to get kind of too wrapped up in what pre-season looks like, especially against a team like Bayern Munich. But that being said, there is still kind of concerns about our attacking quadrant or third of the pitch, right? We just don't seem to have much there. So it's just, yeah, that just hangs over things a bit.

6:21And I think part of it is, you know, a lot of us have kind of reflected, not to kind of jump around too much here, but a lot of us have reflected on the fact that Sonny's gone and he was here for 10 years. That's a long time, you know, in our lives. you know the fact that you know we reflected this like what 25 of my life pretty much and yours that he was there and when you put it into that you're like wow that's a long time and I think that that age element comes into it where again you're kind of going into a season where we haven't really sort of pulled the trigger we haven't really got much of a plan it seems you know we haven't kind of made the season are we just kind of repeating the same sort of mistakes that was my kind of point at the start of being sort of tongue-in-cheek but there is something in it as well right um that being said you know again everything that sort of happens in pre-season football wise you do have to sort of as I say take with a pinch of salt and the fact that we've got Burnley at home as our first game is very very helpful for us I think I am still disappointed that we haven't seen this kind of or seemingly haven't seen this um Super Cup game that comes first obviously on Wednesday has a massive opportunity to us to kind of put a marker down after the success of the Europa League we haven't kind of got our squad in shape and now it just seems like we're going to wait until the end of the season like we usually do to again kind of do some deals as opposed to just kind of pushing the envelope a little bit so that's where I am with it again I'm I'm not sort of um massively um cat or cat or cat or catastrophizing got there in the end about this but again it is just a bit annoying isn't it when you just think can we just kind of can we kind of just get rid of this kind of weight around our necks a bit and just kind of go for it a little bit not I don't mean go for it in terms of you know pulling together a squad that's going to win the Champions League and the Premier League within one window, but also just, you know, just kind of let's, we've won something now.

8:08Let's build on it. Let's show some intent. I just don't think that's really kind of coming through, right? It's one of these things, isn't it? And I'm not saying this as a criticism of anybody that does get very well. Look, who am I? I'm not acting like I'm on some of this holier-than-thou pedestal, but it doesn't wind me up that basically summer after summer after summer, we don't do the thing that we're all crying out for, which is the big exciting signings. We generally tend to make fairly conservative smart. They're not small. They're not insignificant signings. And I think it's disingenuous to suggest that Levy doesn't spend money, that Spurs don't.

8:50We're one of the Premier League's highest spenders. but the flip side of that is that those those facts those that balance sheet can be very easily contorted to fit a certain narrative which is you're all getting kind of wound up about nothing we do spend money and there's there's there's sort of like there's two half truths that exist within this aren't there the truth is our Spurs do spend money but we don't spend money in the same way that the other top clubs that we apparently aspire to be rivals with do quite simply and that's more often than not in wage spend we know that um you know Arsenal are always very glib I always see Arsenal fans being very glib about we don't spend loads of money look at us we're uh you know we we operate so well but their wage spend is always ridiculous it's always massive um and another point you know another thing i was actually thinking about the other day is uh when you consider kind of bale modric kane son among many other players i sort of look at us and i also think they haven't really like saka is kind of the closest thing they've had to a superstar player in quite some time probably since thierry henry they haven't they're they're their floor is often like higher than ours i would say but they seldom really have actually any star play no i'm kind of i'm on i'm on a bit of a tangent here i don't need to really talk about arsenal and stuff but the the point is more with spurs that we do spend money we don't go in for those sort of glitzy big money transfers that i think we all want and there's a lot of talk about the stadium being a game changer again I don't know if Levy ever called it a game changing thing I'd like I this seems to be the thing that we always talk about the game changing stadium and I don't I don't know where what the the etymology of that expression is if you like I don't know where that's originally come from I'm just sort of getting to a point in my most roundabout rambling way as I can here that is it an us problem now like because every single summer we get wound up about Daniel Levy not buying a Jokeres, not buying a Declan Rice, not buying a Sesco, not buying a Cunha and an Mbwemo, even though we apparently were in for Mbwemo as well.

11:23Not doing that a thing that Liverpool do on occasion. Yeah, I know they've not spent for a few years, but it was only a few years ago they brought in Van Dijk and Alisson and now they're kind of doing that cycle again. They refresh, they go hard, they go for the big targets. whereas we are as people reflect on in quite uh you know in quite a nostalgic and it'll be all right fashion well it's just like it was when we started under pochettino again it's like but so we just kind of have to accept that we've regressed a decade do we and the answer to that is yes we probably do because that is the way levy operates that's the way enic operate that's the way the club operates and change for Tottenham and all these people you like they they they fight against that they fight for the club to operate differently and more power to them like mobilize have your say do what you got to do you know but also I can't walk around season after season after season just being angry about Enoch and just being angry about Levy I'm sort of arriving at this point where I'm like that's just what they do and I don't like it and I'm not saying there's no problem with it and I'm not criticizing anybody that does have a problem with it but I'm equally just getting to a point where I'm like I can't be annoyed about this every single year do you know what I mean yeah and again sort of back to my point about um you know the sunny 10 year quarter of our lifetime sort of thing and I don't mean this in a kind of derogatory way to people as you say getting wound up because again we've got wound up in the past and still can be prone to it is it uh for want of a better word maturity thing and i say maturity not necessarily in a oh you know we're kind of rising above this it's just you see it so much and as you say you just arrive at a point where you're like um i cannot in my life at this age in this kind of you know my with the things that i've got going on in my life at the moment can i can i really expend that sort of energy on it and I think that that is part of it I think certainly for me right that I just think that you kind of get to the point where as you say yeah it is frustrating but isn't that just kind of what the model is and yeah you know that doesn't mean you have to kind of like it and accept it but you say it does just feel like that's that's kind of how we operate now you know you can say this about it's hard to use Man City as any kind of comparator but I'm going to Man City weren't a big club before they started spending loads of money right and right where that money came from is you you know, well-documented and the 115 or however many charges it is kind of hanging over them, maybe kind of scuppers it all.

14:03But you become big by acting big is my point, right? And we don't, we haven't kind of done that. After the Sun and the Kane era and all that, and the Pochettino times, we've contracted rather than sort of expanded, haven't we? And I think that's the sort of frustrating part because you're again, oh, okay, so fine. Yeah, this is where we are with Pochettino. I was like, well, I personally, I've done that. I've done that cycle. And maybe it is again, and maybe it is, you're just kind of growing out of it, for want of a better phrase. I mean, let's talk about Madison and what it means for the season.

14:37Then we can talk about Madison and the bigger picture sort of after that. Obviously, he's basically going to be out for the season. I think we know that. Kulusevsky is out for a considerable amount of time. So in my mind, sort of bearing in mind everything we've just spoken about, I think there's a difference between hoping for Spurs to buy big players in order for us to be competing at the very top of the table straight away under Frank. Levy said he wants to win the Premier League. He wants to win the Champions League. Why aren't we going for that now? And I think there's a real case here to be made of like, no, we actually just to be a functioning team, to not be in maybe a similar kind of trouble as we were last season, domestically at least, we actually, I really think it's quite pressing that we do go out for an Eza or somebody like that because like you say, you can't draw too much from that Bayern game.

15:42It is a pre-season friendly. Had we beaten Bayern 4-0 in Munich, we'd be excited, we'd be quite buoyant, but I think it would also be tempered with a it's just a pre-season friendly let's not get carried away so we do have to apply that logic the other way around we can't just say we lost 4-0 the sky is falling at the same time there were some learnings from that game and I think there's been some learnings across our pre-season games in that we struggle to create goals as we did at times last season when Madison or Kulusevsky or both were missing from the team. And that, that isn't going to go away this season.

16:22You know, we clearly, I mean, we've signed, we gave Devine a new contract, but sent him immediately out on loan. He's in his twenties now. What's going on there, whether we're just giving him a new contract, because we think he'll have some sell on value. We clearly don't fancy him as a player that is capable of stepping in and making an impact for us. see also with Donnelly. And I'm not saying this as a criticism to the players. It takes a lot to step up and be a big player in the Premier League. But it just makes me question, like, what are we doing then? Are we going to sit here and wait for James Madison to get fit again, to wait for Kulisevsky to get fit again?

17:02That's a large part of the season to just risk, really. And I don't think we should feel like we're – mate, we don't have Kane and Son anymore, you know? We don't have players like that that can drag us out of a tight spot, as both of them have done in the past. We need a team that functions now. And I'm sure there are other examples we've been linked with, the young McCarty from Manchester City, a number 10. We've been linked with a couple of different little number 10s, the Cuomo player, Nico Paz, is it, I think, is somebody else we've been linked to. being linked to Leicester's number 10. But to me, it's kind of like, I don't know, with Sonny, the selfish side of me is Sonny's gone.

17:52I want something to give me a lift. I would quite like Ezza because I think he would solve a lot of problems for us and he could be the guy for us. But I do, I mean, do you share similar concerns about the state of the team, the squad at the moment? Yeah, yeah. And as I say, we've just come off this kind of period, this era, should we say, whether it's the Kane or the Sun era, we don't really have the kind of fear factor player, do we? That's what's quite concerning. I mean, you're right, you've got Kudus and a couple of other decent players in there. And I will say on that as well, Berval has looked really rusty this pre-season.

18:28So there's no reason to think that when we start proper, he's much improved and kind of gives us that bit more sort of attacking prowess, right? So again, you have to kind of take pre-season for what it is. But yeah, there's just so many sort of unknowns. And the fact that we can't seem to kind of, we haven't been great attacking wise. We are just kind of now, we've now lost Madison. And, you know, I hate to say it, but another injury at this kind of stage of his career, he's going to lose a year. What is he, 27? I don't want to write him off completely, but it's not a good time to get a massive injury like that in a player's career, is it?

19:05So whether we're kind of waiting for him to come back and he comes back and he's not the player, then, you know, again, we've just wasted a year. and I don't want to again it feels bad because it feels like I'm kind of writing off Madison just because he's got injured but the fact remains suddenly we're without any sort of attacking cut through yeah I don't really kind of want to wait until Kuliseski comes back again because he's coming off a bad injury and a weird injury as well another one Solanke just got a knock or got a twinge of a knee might be back soon might be back soon and then it just goes a bit quiet and we know what that means because that's what happened a lot last season wasn't it we just oh it's actually worse than we thought and we're not really doing anything you know however the morgan gibbs white deal the 60 mils that say was structured we were obviously there ready to spend it whether we spread it over five years or whatever that's kind of beside the point we've now got another 20 mil off la for sun where's where's there's there's 80 mil sitting there ready to be spent isn't there i don't know i'm not an accountant but you just think can we not help ourselves out why do we have to kind of go into it tying one hand behind the back right that's that's kind of how I how I see it and you know I want to be excited about Thomas Frank and I am but I want him to be given the best tools to be able to succeed rather than this kind of you know as I said trying to do it with the hand up tied behind his back it's just it just yeah it's just it's just not the best way of going about things isn't it I think we end up signing And then it's El Canoos from Leicester.

20:36That's what it feels like. He's relatively cheap compared to others. I think his numbers look all right. Whether or not that's the kind of, you know, again, we're signing a player from a team that's got relegated, whether he's good or not. Does that raise off floor? I don't know, Jack. Do you see we're only 100-1 to get relegated, which isn't much, I don't think, is it? That's for a team that's finished 17th, right? which is probably about right without much money going on. I just can't just say upfront, I don't think we'll get relegated. I'm not saying that. No, I think we're in a kind of a Super League style structure where actually it's probably just going to be the three teams that come up are going to go back down for the next five years, pretty much with one or two others.

21:27I think that's kind of where we are now. I feel like that's the kind of the massive, you know, going on a bit of a tangent, but I think that's the kind of the change in how football is. And I think that's where it's seen the most stark, the difference between the Premier League and the Championship, that that's just going to be what's going to happen quite a lot. But yeah, it's just, again, it's just reflective of the fact that we, you know, we just haven't, we haven't done enough. Again, whatever the reasons are, we just haven't done it. I think what we do, what we do know about Enick on the kind of like the, the relegation or whatever note is I think if things do, look hairy come December transfer window January transfer window I should say sorry but if things look hairy come December we will spend money in a January transfer window to get ourselves out of that spot I think I think we know that about Enoch even if we're not forthcoming doing it this summer um you know there's still a few weeks to go that's the thing there are still a few weeks to go and it sounds like it sounds like we do have a legitimate interest in Eza but it feels like his heart is set on Arsenal for the time being from everything that whoever is saying about it

22:46we just yeah I think he's got a 20 something mil release clause doesn't he that's why I think again it's a deal isn't it we can do a sort of a deal Before the season even kicks off, soccer fans are already making predictions. So, you know, it's good on that level. and maybe that's what we're going for. I just, I can't help but feel that we might just need a bit of a lift as a club, especially with Sonny going. Did you see he had his debut already in LA? Yeah, I did. I only saw a very sort of brief clip of it, but, you know, he won the penalty and seemed to be rapid, which is more of a reflection, obviously, on the MLS, but good for him, mate.

25:15Good for him. did you see did you watch any of the press conference him getting unveiled again bits and pieces of it but i felt a bit i felt like it all became a bit too much for me to sort of take in you know i was just getting over the fact that i saw the three videos he put out one for you know the broad one one for the fans and one for his teammates i was like this is i can't really kind of cope with this to be honest i need to take a bit of a step back so i didn't kind of um dip too much into it in a kind of sense. I saw bits and bobs. I saw the woman saying to him that, you know, you're going to help us win the World Cup, which I think has probably been taken the wrong way a bit.

25:55I don't think she, I mean, again, I might be kind of giving them the benefit of the doubt over there, but I think that, I don't know, the way she said it, it was a bit like, it just raises football here and it helped. I don't know. Maybe I'm being too kind. I think you're being kind, mate. I do. I mean, she basically said, like, you know, remember we got the World Cup coming up this year and we want to win that. So just saying no pressure, but we'll support you to do what you can do. And I was just like, oh, dear. Oh, dear. Yeah, she's gone off script, hasn't she? Not a good look. But again, like I had people, you remember when Beckham went to LA Galaxy, right?

26:34It was huge news across. It kind of punctuated even people who didn't care about football. when I had conversations, certainly one particular conversation I remember with someone who was like, now that he's going to America, does that mean he can't play for England anymore? And I was like, no. But, you know, but again, we just assume that everyone sort of understands that I say intricacies, to my mind it's not, but, you know, it's maybe just not a common understanding that that's just not how it works, mate. It's weird, isn't it? it's funny like the that era of superstar that that level of fame just kind of pre-internet um obviously Beckham's tenure as did Liam Gallagher's and Oasis's tenure went on into the internet age but the fact that like when we were growing up basically every television channel radio newspaper magazine anything you opened would have something about like David Beckham or the Gallaghers in there, right?

27:38Do you know what I mean? Just that level of fame was something else. And that's what, again, this is tangential, but I just don't know if we'll sort of experience that level of fame again. But I do think the closest thing to that in the modern era is somebody like Sonny, who is just, he's just quite massive, isn't he? He's obviously in Asia, he's huge, but he's just, he is quite clearly a superstar. he's massive and going to the States is pretty big isn't it yeah yeah definitely and you know I think there's a huge like Korean

28:14what's the word I'm looking for community in LA so you know and I think that's really good for them and I'm not saying that's the reason they signed him I think again he's a good player for that level in his own right but but yeah yeah but yeah but what about Spurs what about Spurs and all of this where we oh god did you I'm going to find it now because I've got to say you know how I was saying I was all above everything at the top one thing I'm not above is the decision yesterday for the club to basically publish a like a they've put it Harry Kane exclusive on Polinia, Tell and Son. So I think the club decided it would be a good idea in a summer like this where we have lost Sonny and we've not been kind of forthright in the transfer market.

29:15I mean, I think they tried to, Morgan Gibbs-White, but still look how that ended up. Everyone's a bit tetchy and they decided to publish and I don't think it's been kind of uh wobble-headed to say a very misguided and frankly quite strange interview with harry kane um on the official website so basically kane's quotes in this are talking about sonny he's saying like you know huge congratulations to him go he'll go down as a spurs legend really pleased for him blah blah blah blah all that type of stuff um he said like pelini is great and Mathis Tell is good and, you know, he doesn't want to put too much pressure on him.

29:57And then they ended it by saying, finally a word on Harry himself and his new life out in Germany. Life is good, he smiled. It's been a great experience so far. I'm enjoying my time here. The family are enjoying it. So, yeah, looking forward to the season ahead. Obviously, this is a journey that started at Tottenham from when I was 11 and has taken me to where I am now. I'm appreciative of everyone who's been involved in that journey and thankful to the Spurs fans they've been a part of it it's like do you not like did nobody stop to like read this I'd like I don't know I might I might be too sensitive here mate but this is this is this is bizarre isn't it yeah yeah and I've got some thoughts on kind of how this has come about especially kind of the exclusive element of it right in theory every time a journalist goes to a press conference and asks and or Thomas Frank or Sonny or whoever, a question that they've, one of their two questions they get to ask, they answer it.

30:57That's an exclusive, right? Even though everyone was in the room to kind of hear it. Where did this exclusive come from? Was this, they managed to catch him in the mix zone after the game? Because that's the only time I've seen him speaking. You know, he's spoken to a few outlets. There's that clip of him where he mentioned Sonny and he talks about watching Spurs always, as it were. Is that just that? because calling that as an exclusive, I don't know, it just, as you say, it feels really a strange thing to do. Like it's kind of trying to sort of pull the wool over her eyes. He didn't come and sit down and be like, oh, Spurs are in town.

31:33Yeah, yeah, of course, I'll have a chat. It'd be great to catch up. It'd be great to speak to the Spurs fans and reflect on Sonny, you know, as a sit-down interview. I haven't seen that. I've just seen some exclusive quotes, which, yeah, again, it just doesn't put us in a very good light, does it? Does it annoy you on a level at all, or are you just sort of over it all with Kane and that? I have to say, it doesn't annoy me. I'm just a bit like, that's a bit weird thing to do, isn't it? Again, I can sort of see past it, and I'll be like, oh, great. Yeah, he's reflected on Sonny. and I don't think he really, I didn't need him to, to be honest.

32:14I didn't feel the need of like, Harry, why hasn't Harry said something? You know, I kind of know why he hasn't said anything up until that point. He's very sort of enthralled by the buying thing and whether that's right or wrong, whatever, fine. I'm focusing on Sonny. That's kind of my thoughts about it at the moment. Don't really need him to kind of come out and say something, especially when it's like, thanks Spurs for being a stepping stone. Look at me now. And then that being posted on our official channels, mate. if talk sport has said that to him i'd be like oh cheers harry cheers for putting us that but i would have understood it more right as as a story for them to kind of put that on we're still part of it we're still part of your story we're a few rungs down on it i don't know it's just not to sort of blow it out of proportion but again it's just not a very good look for us is it it's winding you up more we're talking about it i hadn't thought about it until you mentioned it i saw it yesterday and I read it and I was like that's weird and I read it as you know professionally in some regard I read through it and I was like oh that's weird and then you start talking about it start riling me up like you always do I was fine if I didn't do this podcast I'd be so relaxed about Spurs I'm always like oh what are we going to talk about today and then as soon as it kicks off oh bloody Daniel Lee you got me again I'm like do you remember like at the end of Fantasia the night on Bald Mountain all those like little demons like dancing around and all that type stuff it's me it's one of them do you know i mean just like how can i how can i how can i get at phil today i know i need content yeah i need to get in rather i don't want someone to be i want the clicks i need to be above it all i'm the one that starts this by being i am so above all this but here's a really inflammatory yeah phil mate do you want to uh do you want to jump on yeah I'm gobshite to fill the void of it.

33:58It's, yeah, I just, the thing is, because like you say, I'm not wound up about Kane anymore. I found it sort of, like you say, I found it a bit weird that he hadn't really said anything publicly to Sonny, but equally, you know, he's a professional, he's an adult, he probably speaks to him in his own time. It is what it is. Like my life doesn't hinge on whether or not Harry Kane says something. In saying that, it did make me pathetically happy on a certain level that he actually did sort of publicly put out a kind of gushing statement about Son because, you know, I'm a simp at the end of the day.

34:36Yeah, and the fact that he did it after the game that we played just shows how kind of, I wouldn't say maybe not nervous is the right word, but I think he's very sort of aware of not upsetting Bayern because I think they're that sort of club, aren't they? it feels like that they're very much no you can't you have to drive a volkswagen you can't drive anything else or whatever it is they're the center of the universe aren't they yeah you've got to toe the line at every opportunity you've got to wear these leder hose and you've got to do this beer thing you you're you're a buy and play and nothing else is relevant to you and you know again i haven't seen it source i haven't seen michael alice talk about palace but then i wouldn't see that right so i just think that um that that's that's what it's about really you know and he He spoke about it when people shoved microphones into his face in the mix zone.

35:25Do you lament at all the sort of... Well, let's say I don't lament whatever you're going to say, but I'm going to, aren't I? Once you put it to me, I hadn't thought, whatever it is, I didn't lament it. No, but after you say it, I'm going to have lamented it. But anyway, carry on. Just them, their partnership, that it does have this kind of bittersweet thing to it that like Kane because an element to it from Kane I think we kind of don't like to give him on that human level is that he probably is quite sad in a certain way that he didn't win anything at Spurs that he jumped ship that he's gone to Bayern and he's got to make the best of it now because it's where he is and he's got a good chance to add more silverware and all that type of thing but do we sort of maybe not give him enough of a pass to think there probably is quite a sad bit of him that's like, that's kind of annoying because Son is being held up as this legend and I'm the one that gets kind of pelters even from Spurs fans now.

36:28Do you know what I'm saying? I don't, yeah. I think, put it this way, I think that's a very Harry Kane thing to have happened. Yeah, it really is, isn't it? Just no matter kind of what he does, he just never quite seems to land, does he? Frank Brines, isn't he? Yeah, he's like, yes, I've done the Bundesliga and everyone's like, mate, that's Tim Potts. Of course you're going to win it. You should have won it the year before, but you didn't obviously, you know, Leverkusen and all that. But yeah, I think it's just more about, it's very in keeping with Harry Kane's kind of career decisions, shall we say.

37:02You know, he should never have signed that mad contract that Levy got him to sign, you know, what was it, the six years gentleman's agreement thing, which ended up meaning he stayed here longer than he should have done. I'm glad he did. Don't get me wrong, because it was great for us. But from his point of view, I just feel like he just doesn't quite make the right decisions. It doesn't quite work out for him in those kind of moments. Again, the penalty against France when he just lamps it over the bar for no reason. Those sorts of things. So, yeah, I think that's just more in keeping with Harry Kane as an entity more than anything else.

37:35Whether he's sad about it, I don't know. I mean, probably I do think that he's just that type of competitor where he just doesn't let anything like that get into his brain. do you um do you have concerns at all about we sort of touched on it at the top but not so much about like the the the squad in a yeah let's break it down and look at our depth sense do you just have a do you have any concerns about our lack of star power now i mean i'll let's say our biggest star now is christian romero and being real he's you know number one defenders are boring aren't they nobody really thinks defenders are like stars even when liverpool would go on about virgil van dijk everyone's like not bothered do you know i mean it's defender nobody really cares you love a different you love having a great defender but it's not the same as having like a star incredible attacking player is it like it just just quite simply doesn't get off your seat does it it's obviously great to have but it's not what you go to football to watch or some people might but you know it's not the it's it's not the enthralling exciting thing and that's that's kind of where the big question mark is, you know, there are players that could do it.

38:43You know, Odebeir could step up, who I think needs to, to be honest. I know that he had injuries and stuff last season, but I think that probably if you're playing for us in that position now and the manager seems to be putting a lot of faith in you, then, you know, that there's a bit of a, okay, now's your time to step up, mate. Is it fair to say as well, like 30 mil isn't insignificant either, is it, to spend on a player? Not for us, no. given how we spend money, as you say, we don't necessarily spend it in the right way. But if we are spending it on you, then you're not here just to be a kind of a bit part player.

39:16We need you to kind of step up. I'm not going to slag him off. I'm just saying that there's room here for him to kind of players like him that have come in. Same with Bervar. I know he's kind of quite young, but there's voids now that we're going to need someone to fill and it's incumbent on them to do it. It's funny, you know, Odeber though, to be fair to him he's younger than divine is he yeah which is kind of kind of wild right like yeah but again like it seems like our the whole thing about our um youth setup and training pitches and all that is is a sort of a money laundering thing isn't it in the sense of it's a psr thing we we can attract these players get them out get them playing sell them for a couple of mil and if we sell a few of them for a few mil over the course of five years and that's really sort of helpful for our sort of coffers and it doesn't really cost us anything and it you know it just feels like that's where we are with him with the fact that we haven't really had any any youth players sort of come through you know Ajayi for instance that was a great moment last season one of my favorite moments him scoring just goes and all right yeah developmental that's fine but we just don't seem to have that here's a youth player coming through I know I know it feels kind of like glib to say well we just had Kane and stuff but isn't that the point of why we've got this supposedly great youth setup is for them to sort of come through and actually make a dent on the first team as opposed to just all of them always being kind of um loaned out again as you say divine is a great example as you think well surely now maybe you're going to get a look in and oh no no you're off again where did he go stoke was it no uh i don't know that was dorinton Devine has gone to I want to say like Doronton went sorry say that again mate Doronton went back to Aberdeen didn't he Phillips and Donnelly went to Stoke right sorry Donnelly I always Doronton's a defender isn't he Donnelly's the number 10 that was at Leighton Orient but Alfie Devine's gone Preston North End right so Vustovic sounds like he's going to like um Germany right like HSV or someone like that so that's that's that sounds like a pretty good move for him fine um yeah where did Jan go as well he's gone somewhere as well hasn't he Portsmouth did he go to Portsmouth that's right um it just I don't know because Lancashire's gone hasn't he as well Moore's gone like I just mean and this is I don't know it's just a kind of like it's a nagging sort of fear I have mate that like it's great to have all these young players out getting minutes and stuff but aren't we are we actually going to need some of them probably at some point right league cup games dead rubber European games I don't know you know yeah one thing you can reflect on the kind of um the pre-season right is that suddenly we did look quite leggy and obviously we've just done this tour to like um you know hong kong korea and stuff come back but we look a bit leggy against bayern and then you're like well again that's because we don't have the depth and yeah right these players need development and stuff but again as you say are we not just leaving ourselves a little bit short can we not is there not room for some of these players you know if we're signing loads of players then it makes more sense but we're not doing either or so it just feels like a bit of a strange again like i said before We just seem to be, unfortunately, repeating the same mistakes, right?

42:52We've got the Champions League, mate, as well. That's not messing about. You don't want to win the Europa League and be like, right, Spurs have kind of gone up a level here because we've got our European trophy, our recent European trophy. We're now changing the perception of us. We go into the Champions League half-cooked and get battered. Again, it's just detrimental, isn't it? well we have still got the thing is like the thing that i don't want to forget and i don't want people to sort of reflect on this and be like oh what a what a kind of negative podcast because i am still despite all this sort of thinking it's only a couple of months ago that i was seeing tottenham at a trophy parade lifting a europa league like they still got credit in the bank with me in terms of like the emotional bank at least i'm still happy about the idea of thomas frank and i am still excited about the idea of like sir and sar and bergval playing alongside polinia for example um seeing them like have less defense especially bergval seeing him have less defensive responsibilities he was saying the other day he can play number 10 i'm i mean i'm not so sure about that personally but maybe you know he's a young player still i'm interested to see what can happen like like you say with the development of a player like odaba with players like tell um seeing how he utilizes somebody like johnson maybe he can maybe he can solve the johnson conundrum because we're always quick to sort of judge brennan johnson but he scores a lot of goals he scored one of the most noteworthy goals in our recent history he was our top scorer last season he's clearly got talent maybe he just hasn't been utilized effectively can frank kind of solve that So there's plenty to be positive about on face value.

44:43And I do think one of the things I do try to sort of maintain to kind of keep a level of positivity and to not sort of default back into like, you know, this is terrible, is that I do think a lot of the terrible parts of this season upcoming are what ifs. you know that's the way i kind of look at it as in well what if we get some major injuries we're going to be in trouble and what if x y or z happens then we're not going to be in a good what if solanke doesn't score goals or whatever i like this there might some people might be sort of feeling there's a level of copium to that but i do think there's plenty to be optimistic about and look look we're playing in in this week mate we're playing in the uefa super cup you know that's it's pretty it's pretty mad and i know like it would have been nicer as we sort of said to treat this as treat this with the reverence that it may be deserved and to be going into this kind of with boundless enthusiasm about it but i still wouldn't put it past us to to spring a surprise against PSG.

45:56I mean, I know it's not overly likely, but we still could, you know?

You know, I think one of the things going into it, you heard that PSG are only kind of returning, like have only just returned for preseason a week before the Super Cup final, which you think, OK, that's good for us, right?

47:47And another thing, you know, you think about, well, we're a little bit tired against Bayern and we get thumped. that might just be a bit of like, well, we're just going to keep our powder dry because we've got a massive game in a few days. So again, it's hindsight, isn't it? That buying game and the kind of concerns we've got about it could be answered by a really good performance, whether we win or not against PSG. I'm like, okay, fine. You know, again, it just gives us a bit more information. I just would have liked us to see, you know, it might be pie in the sky thinking, but I just would have liked us to see us kind of, yeah, giving us the best chance possible to kind of go into that game and uh it's not even necessarily about embarrassing ourselves i don't really sort of care about that because if we lost and we lost like four nil or whatever then it's kind of what people expect to happen we're what aren't the first thing psg would have done that to whether it had been back a week or not but i just would have liked us to see a bit of a change in kind of tact i think that's where i am overall i'm just you know i'm really looking forward to how kind of uh thomas frank um sets us out and kind of gets the best out of some of our really good young players that's that's kind of where I'm defaulting to what uh what are your thoughts on the way we kind of played against Bayern at times because I think there's there's if we look at the second half against Arsenal I don't think we were overly defensive against Newcastle to be honest but second half against Arsenal and say for parts of the Bayern game there has been some criticism drawn that Thomas Frank has kind of defaulted to being Mourinho-esque, if you like.

49:19Do you just see this as, this was part of the course with Thomas Frank? Yeah, we did know there was a level of pragmatism to him. And I guess this is a twofold question that if we, say, manage to beat PSG by playing that kind of way, are you all right with that? yeah I mean I don't I've never really kind of prescribed to this idea of like this is the Tottenham way or you know the West Ham way of playing or the Newcastle way of playing I don't really buy into that yes you you want to be exciting at times but it's just not really how football works as we've seen the last two seasons certainly last season it's football isn't just about playing that one way into hell with it you know oh I'd rather lose 4-3 than to win 1-0 No, I'd rather win games, mate.

50:07That's always kind of been my position. But yeah, with that idea of Frank being overly pragmatic or Mourinho-like, the other angle to that is what would he have thought needed the most attention in pre-season given the state of what we were in last season? It's how we defend. So you can, again, it depends how it pans out, But the reason why we've been playing that way could be because that's what he's wanted us to focus on in pre-season. You know, you can score goals. We've got attacking players and that just kind of comes more naturally. But we've got to embed some defensive principles. And all right, you know, we're getting like beaten 4-0 by Bayern.

50:49But those first two, the goal that they scored and then the penalty was offside and not a penalty. So I know they missed it or Kane missed it. But, you know, so I just, I think maybe you kind of view, you have to view kind of pre-season as a way of working on the things that you need to work on. Again, I know that kind of doesn't really make sense when you get beat 4-0, but those last two goals were a bit strange ones to concede as well. And that raises other questions about Vicario or whatever. But I do think that the reason we've played that way in all these games is because he's been, we need to work on our defensive shape and that's going to be our focus.

51:25so i mean psg they have it is worth considering the fact that they've played in the club world cup they've only they returned back to pre-season training this week um they actually returned to training on the 6th of august and by all accounts they will not be playing any friendlies even behind closed doors or anything ahead of the ahead of the super cup does that in any way give us even the most meagre of not advantages. I'm not going to go out and say we have an advantage over PSG, but does it at least give us a big, any type of positive going into this game, do you think? In theory, it should do, right?

52:10Because it's about match sharpness. That's the thing that, that's why you get minutes in your players' legs because it's all about being sharp. So in that sense, we should be sharper than them. Whether us are our sharpest and then at their dullest means that we're going to have to stop them because they are razor sharp at most times, even if not at the worst of times, that they can still cut teams apart regardless. So yeah, again, it's certainly a positive. I definitely prefer it this way around than they've had a good rest and then been building up to this as a big thing. We might be able to catch them cold, obviously, is the thing, but a cold PSG is still hugely dangerous.

52:48yeah I mean they are they're ridiculous aren't they but then I don't know I got slapped up by Chelsea who I still just I cannot rate Chelsea I just cannot get my head around them being a decent team people are saying they're one of the favourites of the Premier League this year I'm like how do they do it how do they keep doing this all the time it's not right it's not right and it's not fair as uh you know as the song once said um

53:24i don't know i just i've got do you know what the thing is i know and i know this is silly and i know there's not really much to this but i i just i kind of have a bit of a feeling that us as the underdogs, Frank's approach, PSG maybe not viewing this as higher priority, a fixture as maybe we are. I don't know. I just, there's something that I feel with this group of young players who won the Europa League, who got that over the line, who might have more of a point to prove in a certain way. And I really, that's kind of what I'm clinging to from Spurs' perspective. I just kind of feel like, as we did with the Europa League, I feel like we might want it a bit more, this game.

54:17And I don't know. I just, I'm not, I think number one, I think primarily, I'm just excited to see Spurs contest this type of fixture. And I'm just, I don't know. I just, my gut feeling towards this game is a positive one because I know PSG are great. I know Luis Enrique is great. But there's still something about them where I'm like, you aren't quite, I don't think you're as big as you think you are yet, you know, because it's taken you long enough to get to this point. And you fumbled it with Mbappe, Messi, Neymar. Do you know what I mean? They've gone through various different cycles of Galacticos and this, And I know that's kind of what Enrique's sought to root out and everything.

55:10But there's still something about PSG. Like you say, the Chelsea game, where they got slapped up by Chelsea, there's something about them that I just don't quite buy yet. In the same way that you don't, like you've just said, they're with Chelsea. Do you get what I'm saying? Yeah, I do. Again, if they'd won the Club World Cup, then that changes things, isn't it? If they kind of blazed through that like everyone sort of expected them to. but the fact that they didn't just raises question marks isn't it a bit that they're they're dangerous but they can also be got at right whether we have the tools to get at them is kind of goes back to our conversation before about our lack of seemingly lack of uh attacking bite but um but yeah i do know what you mean i'm not nervous about it at all really i'm kind of going into that thinking like you it would it does feel like something that we're just gonna do as well right you know and all that being said about kind of getting us into the best position But still, I just could see it happening.

56:07It would be really quite good if we did as well. I would feel it would be pretty awesome. I can imagine our first game of the Premier League season, we might even put the Europa League and the Super Cup out on the pitch. And seeing the players kind of walk past that would be quite massive, wouldn't it? That's what this club needs. it needs those it needs those tangible reminders of this is who you actually are you're not lads it's tottenham you're this that's what it is you just need to really write you write your own history in that regard right and i just think that helps massively and i think that you know as i say this is why i just want us to kind of be able to sort of take in this really seriously rather than just seeing it as a bonus i just i think it's really important in the terms of like if we won it that's that's huge for our kind of how people see us it's massive that the europa league was but this on top of that i just think is massive if we lost it doesn't matter which is another another thing but i just feel like it's an opportunity to cement some things but it but it actually genuinely kind of doesn't matter though you know if we do lose it and i know that's that's such a cop-out isn't it but it really kind of doesn't matter no because there's nothing really at stake at stake other than the kind of the kudus of it right not the muhammad kudos of it but the it the fact that we would be able to sing with champions of europe and we're going to do that anyway so again it doesn't really even kind of change that but it's i just think it's something you can use as a as a manager someone like someone like frank or someone you know director of football they can use that as a kind of we're actually proper we're not tin pop we're not this joke that people keep keep making about us we're not the europa league wasn't a fluke against a terrible Man United side.

57:51We are building and working to something. And these are the tangible evidence to that. So, yeah, I think it's – I'm going to enjoy it. I don't think I'm going to be particularly stressed about it, as I say. No, no, no. I think the thing that – I don't want us to get humiliated. Do you imagine we lose bloody 7-0 or something? And that's not ideal. Do you know what I mean? That's kind of what's at stake in it. It's like, let's keep it to 2-0 if we can, Tottenham, if we are going to lose. Let's have that level of jeopardy to the fixture. But like you say, for the main part, it's something where it's all, it's kind of no lose.

58:34You win and it's amazing and you've got something to go alongside the Europa League. If you lose, then fine. You know, it is what it is. It was a game against PSG and we still won the Europa League. On a level though, if you do win the Super Cup, it actually makes it harder for your arsenals and stuff to kind of really spit feathers over us singing champions of Europe. Because if you've won the Super Cup, that is the ultimate champion of Europe, isn't it? Well, yeah. If Chelsea can sing that they're the world champions because they won whatever the hell that tournament was in the summer, then we can do the same if we win the Super Cup.

59:16That's literally what it's for. It's who's the best. Right? And we are the best. We are the best. We are the Tottenham and we are the best. See, that song exists. Yeah, exactly. So we'll forget all the rest, as it were. Yeah, look, plenty to look forward to. we still have a uh we still got the transfer window open it feels like i can't like i can't imagine we won't bring anybody in doesn't you know it depends what the profile is obviously i'm sat here itching over as a constantly but wherever or not that happens i think we are going to need a couple of faces and uh is it can i just like now we're at the end of the pod we can talk about um i mean i think one of the reasons why i'm kind of like cool on top them at the moment is that we're gonna see oasis in edinburgh this week mate so uh i'm actually quite looking forward to that right now do you know what i mean exactly yeah that's that's that's next on the agenda for us um really looking forward to it um gonna be a lovely old time isn't it on the same train going up oh what a dream i've uh i've seen a few people like mates So plenty of my mates have gone to Oasis.

1:00:31And I've seen a few of my friends who I know they support other clubs wearing Man City shirts to Oasis. That's fake, isn't it? I've seen two people do that, two people independently, wear Man City shirts to Oasis. What are you doing? Where do you get it from? One of them's a QPR fan. One of them's an Arsenal fan. It won't surprise you to hear. um i'm not doing that do you know i mean i toyed i toyed like a simp over the idea of buying one of you know they released like an oasis football shirt for the tour like it's like an adidas football shirt but it's got oasis as a sponsor on the front and the badge is like 24 and i thought about getting that and i thought i'm not i'm not spending 90 pounds on that actually do you know i mean i'm not i'm just not doing it so they do them on dh gate so i might actually uh would you would you like not want to be associated with me if i wore a spurs shirt to the to it loud and proud i'd never not want to be associated with you unless you wore a man city shirt then i'd then i'd have to take you aside and have a word with you is it was it but do you think is it a bit yobby is it a bit you know i mean it's no aces concert in it right we're having a few beers bit of you know bugle no we're not doing that the only bugle we'll be doing is listening to it at the uh castle do they actually do that i don't know the bugle the bugle be my ass mate after all the gluttony beer that i'd be drinking all day oh so cannon's going off no he's just had a he couldn't they didn't have they didn't have gluten-free dura dam for him so always the right mess I mean it's going to be all tenants isn't it up there as well that's what we're going to be on yeah you're going to be like one of those cows that just like inflates with gas and someone's going to have to like put one of those like stick a knife in me stomach slowly let it out and then tip you back onto your feet is what it is Tottenham we're going to Oasis Tottenham are going to sign some players and then on the way back we're going to see Tottenham beat PSG and it's all going to be good it's all going to be good because we're the tottenham and we're the best um but yeah if uh if you have heard i don't know i mean i hope it i hope it's clear i did actually get a uh a new microphone i've got a new microphone set up so i'm trying to do you know i mean trying to make the pod a bit bit better marginal gains this season and uh the pod does now have a permanent tune um as provided by the gentleman i'm speaking to today gillen um it's called ghost cat thank you very much for that phil i i very much like it so i hope you uh hope you like your artistic endeavor being misappropriated to being a tottenham podcast opening tune well yeah my pleasure mate And to be honest, people, thousands of people listen to my music a year.

1:03:38Not that I really care about that, to be honest. That's why I just hide it on SoundCloud somewhere. But still, it's something I can point to, isn't it? In my dark moments. So I do have a Patreon as well. Patreon.com slash RTR Pods. And lastly, I have been signed by big money signing this summer by the Sports Social Network. um so what that in reality what that looks like is i might be doing the ad reads every now and again if i'm lucky so uh you know if you don't like that type of thing soz um but uh you know i'm quite happy with that it's quite good so uh thanks for listening thanks for talking to me today phil i mean that was such an awkward sign i was trying to the thing is mate do you know what When I try to do like the serious, here's some housekeeping stuff.

1:04:32That's what they call it, isn't it? Front of house. Front of house, isn't it? Not housekeeping. No, I think it's housekeeping. Is it? Okay. It's housekeeping, yeah. Let's go housekeeping. Fire exits and all that sort of thing. So I'm thinking new microphone. I've signed for a new thing. Got a new theme tune. New podcast style as well as provided by Charlotte. You know, it's lovely having a graphic designer for a wife that I can just say, you know, all that work you've got to do already and all that freelancing and all that other stuff. Can you, can you support me for a minute? Yeah. This really specific thing that when you go above and beyond to provide that for me and I give you a page of amends and stuff, don't get angry with me about that.

1:05:10No, not like that. Like this. Yeah. Like how I imagined it, but can't explain it. Yeah, exactly. So yeah, lots of new things. Wonderful. Great. Spurs. let's just look forwards and not back eh

1:05:31anything else to add Phil? no it's just it's all good isn't it depends how you look at it really that's true never true or word spoken

With the new season fast approaching, we take a hard look at Tottenham’s squad depth and where the concerns really lie. Is there any point still getting angry about the way Daniel Levy and ENIC run the club, or is this simply who they are?

We also talk through Harry Kane’s “exclusive” interview on the Spurs website and why it was such an odd move from the club, even if it didn’t exactly wind us up.

We also look ahead to the UEFA Super Cup final against PSG and why there’s every reason to stay hopeful, even with the odds stacked against us.
