In short

Tottenham’s 5-0 League Cup win over Charlton, standout performances and transfer/culture talk, then a Newcastle United preview (including likely lineups and midfield/forward selection).

Guest backgrounds

Oliver and Rosa are Spurs-focused podcasters/hosts of Rule the Roost. They discuss Spurs squad decisions, tactics, and transfers from a fan perspective.

Key claims

  • Fernandez was the best player, praised for quick passing and “spraying” the ball across the pitch.
  • Mikey Moore’s goal/strike and directness show promise, though he’s playing out of position.
  • Savio’s debut goal suggests he’s a confident dribbler who can “go for it.”
  • Tottenham’s new striker options (Marmoush and likely Solanke/Tell/Savio roles) signal a shift away from “soft” culture toward stricter standards.
  • Langer/Deservey quotes are interpreted as a culture reset: players must speak clearly, follow rules, and not expect surprises.

Notable examples

  • Moore’s “lovely strike” and dribbling moments.
  • A late corner goal conceded despite a 5-0 lead.
  • Newcastle losses of Tonali, Bruno, and Anthony Gordon; Spurs haven’t beaten Newcastle since 2023.
  • Likely midfield debate: Tonali + Fernandes + third spot (Gallagher vs Bensicourt).

1:43Rosa:Hello and welcome to Rule The Roost podcast. I'm Oliver. I'm Rosa. And before we begin, I think we should address the elephant in the room. More accurately, the elephant not in the room. A little to trunk joke for you there. As some of you may be aware, Jack is undergoing a period of convalescence after suffering a terrible bout of tonsillitis. Now, let's be crystal clear, this is not some Radio 1 situation where a poor soul is being made to stand in for Scott Mills. Jack will be back soon has Matt's suit or not and we wish him well as I'm sure you all do yeah yeah

2:23Oly:we are the gentle Ben and big Kevin Danso not not the first alternative nor the second but two players who did score goals each on Wednesday night so there you go hopefully not a massive disappointment let's begin on Wednesday night shall we

2:40Rosa:shall

2:41Oly:after our humiliating defeat at Brentford on the opening day of the season. We came back to win our opening game of the League Cup campaign against Charlton at home. We scored goals, five of them. Five, that's a hatful. That's literally a hatful. That's as many goals as you can get in a hat. A welcome result, regardless of the opposition. How do you feel about it?

3:08Rosa:Relief, I think. It's one of those where if you don't win, it is abject humiliation and we are sick of that.

3:16Oly:We've had enough.

3:19Rosa:So to score the goals, I was a bit worried at first actually when we started because it was a bit, it's a bit...

3:25Oly:Somewhat laboured, I would say.

3:27Rosa:And then the goals weren't, the first goal and the second goal, they were a bit out of nothing. It wasn't really carving them apart but after that, it all seemed to settle down.

3:37Oly:Yeah, we carved them apart, they fell apart. It was really nice and I think it's also to be sniffed at because traditionally we have struggled against opposition. They've started, obviously they're in the league below us, the league that we are not now in. Thank you so much, all the football gods, for that. But they've started really well. And as I said, we have traditionally laboured somewhat against that kind of opposition. It was a few years ago, wasn't it?

4:03Rosa:When Spence had to step up.

4:06Oly:Spence and Brennan. Yeah.

4:09Rosa:Heroes.

4:09Oly:Yeah. R.I.P. Sorry, lads. We've got new heroes now. who would you say is a hero of the hour well i think the best player on the night was fernandez

4:18Rosa:yeah i think it's just like one of these players that we've been missing for so long and that is someone who can pass the ball um what concept i know well it's it's the thing we're trying out um this ability just to keep moving quickly keep hold of it but also just spray it out across the pitch there was one pass i think in the first half where i know the past you're talking about i think everybody does i think it was it was some more i don't i can't remember whether or not it led to the goal but it just seemed like it was going to be cut out by about two or three of their players but just landed perfectly at his feet ping i was just like

4:57Oly:i haven't seen that in years it feels like in a very very very long time now do you feel like his So it's£80 million,£80 million Great Bridge pounds for him. Does that now feel like a bargain based on his early showing?

5:17Rosa:Yes. Good question.

5:22We're living in an environment where all transfers are stupid, though, aren't they?

5:27Oly:It's a ridiculous amount of money. It's never going to be a bargain.

5:30Rosa:Brendan Johnson was£50 million.

5:33Oly:A bargain based on the fact that his goal won a cup?

5:38Rosa:Sure. Sure, but still he would just... Still, it's a nonsense.

5:44Oly:Yes, in that world, it looks really good value.

5:49Rosa:Yeah, and he just seems to slot straight in. I think he's the sort of player we've been crying out for, especially with Maddison seemingly never fit. Even if you take into account the other attacking midfielders, even Xavi, Kulu, they're not the sort of players that can play those passes. They can do other things, but to play just those sweeping passes, I mean, probably thinking back to Eriksen, really, the last sort of player that was capable of dictating the play in that way and just having that whole range of passing in the field.

6:27Oly:But do you know what, though? This proves the point that we were making to our oldest daughter earlier, where she said, I miss Harry Kane. Why did he leave? She's asked us loads of times and it feels like the answer doesn't really satisfy her. And our answer was just like, because we had a good team and it just got progressively worse. And that kind of sums it all up really, doesn't it?

6:48Rosa:Yeah.

6:49Oly:If it's been that long since we had a player of that quality, that's why it left us. That's the kind of trouble we've been in.

6:56Rosa:We're not doing Withering on the Vine anymore. We're not. We're not. It's a new era. It's a new era. We're bursting with juice. It's spring. in autumn. Yeah.

7:10Oly:Long story short, we like him a lot. We do have a couple of other things to talk about, but I feel like we should talk about Mikey Moore. Don't you? Because even though that actually wasn't his first goal for Spurs, as the commentators kept saying, it was really nice.

7:27Rosa:It was a lovely strike. I think people have been a bit cool on him. maybe that's been a bit unfair first of all he's playing out of position secondly he's a child he gets everyone on the bus still and it was a hell of a strike and I think there were moments where he managed to dribble past players which was really nice he obviously doesn't have blistering pace so I don't think he's ever going to go around the outside especially playing out on the right but obviously he's taken his goal really well I think he's a really tidy player he keeps hold of the ball when he picks his right pass he picks it well there are obviously a few moments I think in the first half when he should have cut it back to Bergvale when he's just fired across the box but that's just that's experience

8:19Oly:and decision making we talk about this all the time and it's just fun to have someone who's trying things and being direct and just and one of our own that's really nice it's just we're not going to undervalue that are we

8:30Rosa:No, there's more to come from him. Players take time. Sometimes they're ready from the out.

8:39Oly:More to come from him at Tottenham or are you sending him out? Are you shipping him out?

8:44Rosa:I think, you know, now I'm sure we'll come on to like Kudis is back in training. Allegedly. I believe it when I see it. There's videos. There's literally videos. There's literally videos. You can see it.

8:57Oly:Hey, I flop.

9:01Rosa:I think probably he will go out on loan may just stick around till the January transfer window but he needs to be playing football

9:11Oly:he does

Read the full transcript

9:12Rosa:because if that decision making is going to improve then he has to be playing football he can't just have that all on the pitch

9:18Oly:practice makes perfect now let's move on to one of the players who sort of means he needs to go out on loan which is we fight we've got we've got Savio and he made his debut on what 70 odd minutes something like that yeah to great excitement great applause um and then he got his first goal how did it make you feel really excited i'm been one of the people that's been maybe a bit indifferent about him yeah you've been a real

9:51Rosa:grouch actually yeah sorry um but i'm really i think i'm ready to love again yeah to give you a thrill he did it's more just the case of we've got good dribblers in the team not many but a few you know you look at someone like tell yeah um we have players who can dribble but then you there was just like something bit extra wasn't there just the the kind of elasticity in which he could

10:17Oly:move i just think the confidence as well just to know that he can do it and just go for it and not be kind of phased by the occasion at all. He's like, I'm here, I'm ready. And also obviously, you know, again, the opposition and all of that, but still.

10:35Rosa:It's a great start, though. It's a great start. And it's a great finish. You know, he's hit it early. He's beaten two men. He's had a go and he's gone in. And, you know, Ben Davies robbed him.

10:46Oly:Here for him. Basically, I couldn't lose either way. That's like another goal for our debutante or another goal for my lovely GB. so

10:55Rosa:everyone else is disappointed

10:56Oly:everyone else is disappointed sorry I don't care about the rest of you I just care about myself don't my children all going great guns 5-0 can't remember the last time we scored that many goals no

11:11Rosa:doesn't matter

11:12Oly:doesn't matter then obviously we conceded was this from I've already forgotten was it from a corner

11:20Rosa:it is from a corner late on now Some big farmland.

11:25Oly:Yeah. Does this speak to... Is this something we have to be worried about? Always. Still? Always. Okay, fine. Are you one of those people who has looked at our new look defence and gone, none of these guys can properly head a ball?

11:42Rosa:No.

11:42Oly:Okay, good.

11:43Rosa:But I'm sure.

11:45Oly:Maybe you did. We did also have Kevin Danso on the pitch, who is like the best head of the ball in the Premier League.

11:53Rosa:I mean, it was late on. We're 5-0 up. People are probably going to go, I'm going to get my head on everything. Yeah.

11:59Oly:We got a new cast for the weekend. Yeah.

12:00Rosa:No one wants to get another. You know, we've taken a few bangs in the match already. Yeah. So I had half a tub of Vaseline on his face. And I think someone else took a whack as well, probably. Can't remember who. Before the season even kicks off, soccer fans are already making predictions. Who wins the league? Who qualifies for Europe and who's lifting the trophy at season's end? On Calci, America's number one prediction market platform. You're trading against peers in a live market, meaning there's no house. And as the probability changes, you can buy in and out of your position. 12:37Rosa:K-A-L-S-H-I, Calci. Trade the beautiful game. 18 plus only restrictions and eligibility requirements apply. Event contract trading involves risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Prices, values, and available markets may differ from those mentioned. For more information, see calsheet.com slash regulatory. Anyway, it doesn't really matter. Rada, it was just one of those, ugh.

12:57Oly:It's just annoying because 5-0 is lovely and 5-1 is a bit... I'm not going to turn my nose up at it.

13:05Rosa:I think that's where we are. We are certainly in the carpet user's cab at the moment. Let's have a few more of those before we start getting started. Exactly, exactly.

13:13Oly:Okay, fine. And we don't care if there are people out there who are worried about it. Send your complaints elsewhere.

13:20Rosa:The good thing about it is obviously we're rewarded with this great performance with a trip to Anfield.

13:26Oly:Oh, yeah.

13:28Rosa:You know, a famously happy hunting ground for us. We'd always get screwed in the cups. I feel like...

13:37Oly:Yeah, I can't think of the last time we had like a generous...

13:40Rosa:I mean, Charlton was like the first one. And it's just...

13:43Oly:That's it. We get one. We get one every season. And that's it. That's it. It's your lot. We do know, like, one person who thinks we're going to turn up to Anfieldersmashing, but he is, you know, he's probably suffering from jet lag at that moment. It's not even Jack, who's, like, probably high as a kite right now. Even he doesn't think we're going to do it. I feel we're going to do it. Oh, it's you.

14:05Rosa:I think we're going to do it.

14:06Oly:We're not going to do it. It doesn't matter. It's not happening yet. there's plenty of time for loads of other things to go wrong and also right let's stick with right things that are right because we got one of our guys and then in an incredible turn up for the books we got the other one as well no one saw this coming no one did are you being sarcastic yes i didn't you didn't see it coming no i was like there's well i don't think we would get either of them i've got serious ptsd from last summer so the fact that we got not one but two um i think this

14:44Rosa:is the one i i wanted more yes i think most people feel that way oh i'm not special snowflake no um not in this respect um every regard i think because because of all the stuff you where people will be like dunking on Savio. His poor numbers, relatively speaking.

15:07Oly:What, because he's scored like two goals?

15:09Rosa:Yeah, where are you? You don't have to drive, too. But I think Marmouch is a bit harder to pin down on that because, you know, he's been effectively the understudy to the best striker in the world by Harry Kane. And so no one's really expecting him to play that much.

15:28Oly:Yeah.

15:30Rosa:And it seems like whenever he has been playing, he's done all right. He's got a decent number of goals and he's just a quality player. If he were the player that we'd signed straight off the back of that Frankfurt season, people would be doing jumping.

15:51Oly:Well, it wasn't just one Frankfurt season, was it? Was it two? He did great numbers. Obviously, I think the last one was amazing. but I think he'd been, he held great numbers anyway. I think people would be, well, because he was like, he was such a big deal when he arrived. So I think obviously we'd all be buzzing and it's just, like you're always going to be, like if you move on from City because you didn't make it there, you're always going to, it's always going to look like slightly tarnished, like you couldn't cut it at the top, top, top level. But at the same time, the context of it, with him being behind Harland just makes that all irrelevant, doesn't it?

16:31Rosa:And also he's just maybe not like a pep robot. Same with Savio, really. Maybe these are players that... The era of the pep bot is over. Exactly.

16:39Oly:Yeah. We're not like the home for sad lost boys anymore. We're the home for...

16:45Rosa:This isn't Gus Poirier.

16:46Oly:Rebellious pep bots.

16:47Rosa:Yeah.

16:48Oly:Yeah, I like it.

16:49Rosa:The renegades.

16:50Oly:Yes, yes. I like this very much. I cannot wait to see him

16:57Rosa:I don't even mean I guess it's just like there's so many kind of moving pieces now because we've got

17:04Oly:yeah these pieces are going out our two strikers see ya well are they no I mean obviously but it's kind of like

17:12Rosa:Langer's words have come true you know he said players are coming back what he meant was in six months time or longer players are coming back and so now we've got like options so it's like is he going to play in the 10? probably not is he going to play out front? yes do you think? over Solanke?

17:35Oly:yes

17:35Rosa:please tomorrow?

17:38Oly:maybe not maybe not immediately maybe not like from minute one or whatever but like hopefully from just like minute 60 and that's it that's it

17:48Rosa:yeah never see Solanke again

17:50Oly:like that would be my preference off to comic-con with you yeah just have a good time you've got like you know you he's he definitely hasn't seen all the anime yet so it was fine he can amuse

18:00Rosa:himself yeah i mean the good thing about him is it i know one of these things that people get slated about is like versatility especially in the forward lines but i think especially but also

18:11Oly:because as tottenham fans we've had that line and that lie sold to us loads we just need a versatile forward and they've always been like

18:20Rosa:actually what they've given me as a shit forward yeah basically he's versatile, he can't play anywhere

18:28Oly:but he seems like the real deal

18:31Rosa:yeah and you know he's a player that can make goals and score them and we've not had any players because if we get any of those things you know, Charles was our top scorer last year I think we need to remember that I think we do just like made entirely of right angles all those goals were flukes I'm sure if you're playing tomorrow Richarlison good luck

18:56Oly:you won't be, it's fine I think we see what the pecking order has become, sorry Pombo but I think

19:04Rosa:no manager is going to go yeah I'm kind of, unless they're Conte be kind of indifferent about him but Bobby does seem pretty excited about this one.

19:14Oly:So what did he say exactly?

19:16Rosa:It was something like he's He sees football like a coach. And I don't think he means like a bus.

19:23Oly:Let's hope not. We'll just kind of move very slowly. We've got some of those already.

19:27Rosa:Cheap.

19:30Oly:Okay. So he's intelligent. Do you feel like this is a sort of slight indictment of the rest of our squad?

19:38Rosa:I mean, yes.

19:40Oly:I really like this guy. He knows what football's about.

19:43Rosa:Thank God we've got one. The other side sees it like a Kieran.

19:50so um yeah i mean i'm guessing you know he's not said that about savvy obviously savvy's

19:56Rosa:talked you know talked about being like a very special player but this is obviously a player that he sees as being able to because of his like tactical awareness like do many roles and do them well yeah you know i think because he can fill in you know across the front of i think he sees him as predominantly through the middle. So either behind like Solanke or playing as the nine. And obviously they're quite different profile players as well.

20:26Oly:Yeah.

20:27Rosa:So even if, you know, we are going to be playing Solanke, you know, he's going to be more of a back to goal. But, you know, he does have some qualities.

20:34Oly:He does have some qualities. And he was all right, actually. He was fine. I was incredibly angered by his ridiculous celebration because I just think...

20:43Rosa:He pulled out of it.

20:44Oly:He did. He nearly did. He nearly did. Too late. Too late. But he wanted to do it. He was like, I'm going to do my annoying arrow thing. And then he did things slightly better. He unstiefed it. Yeah. But he did not loose it.

21:02Oly:Rightly so. You're not allowed to fulsomely celebrate when you've barely scored any goals. It was a good finish though. It was. Give him credit. It was conditioning. it was a good shot and it was good positioning this is what you want from your strikers we just literally haven't seen it I'm gonna stop dragging Zalanki because I just really I have so much more material but I'll save it anyway look yeah we're excited we're excited to see big Omar and I also like it when you can bring like an entire nation into your football club so welcome Egypt yeah you will all have to stop supporting Liverpool now but I can start them right let's talk um looking ahead deserve these press conference and the culture shift transfer satisfaction we're quite happy with the window he he seems quite happy with the window deserve me yeah why don't you tell us what he said i will it has exceeded his expectations but he has hinted at needing one more player in one specific position.

22:12Oly:After a Thursday dinner with the owner, do you think it's Gatpo?

22:17Rosa:I think that's the one we all... Do you think that's the one he wants? I think it's the one we all want. Do you? I want him. I think he's a good player.

22:26Oly:No, I agree.

22:27Rosa:He scored a good goal at the weekend. That's enough for me.

22:29Oly:He did score a good goal at the weekend. He also missed a number of chances.

22:34Rosa:yeah well again having chances imagine imagine chances but you know i think he's one of these players it's not really for a number of reasons yeah liverpool have had a very good team and he's been there quite a few years now i want to say like four years but yeah about that something like that and he's kind of started i think he's better through the middle um which i think is probably where the Zerbie would want to play him so that might be one of the things that kind of attracts him to us obviously City are kind of supposedly sniffing around now which is a bit worrying but you never know how serious they are whether that's just uh that just sounds like agent

23:16Oly:talk to like kind of yeah to make us go oh I mean because everybody knows we're just going to spend silly money now so it's a bit like we spent silly money I don't care I don't care yeah I can't get too angry about it.

23:28Rosa:I love being in the cartel. It's amazing.

23:33Oly:So, do you think that is what we need, though? Do you think that's the position that we need?

23:40Rosa:I mean, this position that I've always said we're banged on about was right wing. Yeah. Because I just think we've been like that. And I think if Savio is going to be starting there, which, yeah, based on the Charlton game, it seems so

23:58Oly:then that's fine and we've got him and then we've got Kudus who allegedly is coming back so that's okay right? I think so

24:08Rosa:obviously it's Gatko I could fill in though I think obviously if Gatko is going to come in and play for the centre that does mean Richarlison I imagine Richarlison will be off yeah

24:19Oly:that's fine

24:21Rosa:and then we're going to have a short season so we don't need a huge squad. So Gakpo would be the one. There's not really been any other names that I can call them.

24:33Oly:It's just Raphael Liao, isn't there? Yeah. Is he going to Villa?

24:38Rosa:Don't know. Don't know, but I mean, he's always looked good to me. I know he's a bit erratic. There's obviously something, isn't there?

24:46Oly:Yeah, exactly. There's obviously a reason that we're not going for this player who is available at essentially reasonable price.

24:53Rosa:Yeah, cup price. Villa are buying him. they've got no

24:55Oly:yeah anyway good luck Villa yeah poor boys yeah you are out of the cartel um right the other thing that I deserve he went big on this week was um his attitude laying down the law um we have been instructed by Jack to read these quotes verbatim so I'm going to obey him um as I don't with any other men in my life um but for you Jack I will deserve you said i've been very clear with players i've told players if you speak clearly from the beginning you can't expect surprise to stay here they have to feel happy and proud it's a long and emotional spirit wait what did he say it's like an emotional season because we are building a new project with new players we need the right spirit first of all then the right qualities and the organization of the play and then he also said if you want to leave and you've not found an offer it's your problem not mine i give respect i kiss you i hug you and you have to stay calm inside of the dressing room not speak too much because the rules have been clear from the beginning and the end it's not my problem um i really love this um like finally yeah i mean i would say pretty much from the moment he arrived the way he talks about what he wants and about the club.

26:24Oly:I can't think. After everything that happened at the beginning, after that, I can't think of a thing that he said that hasn't kind of spoken like directly to the fan base and what we have been like dying for.

26:40Rosa:It's almost like it's really easy. It's almost like it's really easy. We've been making such a pig's ear of it for so long. Yeah. But I mean, he's right. and this is someone's needed to say this but I never needed to say this but I also needed to act upon it and we have you know the culture at the club in many ways has been just so soft you know we've heard talk about the away dressing room everyone saying that we've gone in and smashed it up now and

27:10Oly:I've seen pictures but it still looks nice but it's just kind of stuff around it just looks really it just looks quite simple it's massive but it looks quite simple

27:17Rosa:But all the kind of massage tables and TVs and, you know.

27:21Oly:Yeah, yeah. Kind of Wi-Fi hotspots.

27:23Rosa:So you should be just like scrambling the Wi-Fi, all of that.

27:27Oly:What's the password? You can't have it.

27:29Rosa:But it kind of speaks to a wider culture problem is that we've just been too nice. And we've been too nice to away teams, too nice to some of the bums.

27:39Oly:Basically, nice to the away teams, nice to the away fans, nice to everyone who goes to hotspot away and just like absolute shit heels to the fans yeah

27:50Rosa:essentially yeah yeah so we needed someone just to come and say what the fucking hell have you been doing this is a nightmare what do you mean like you've had players just kind of dictating stuff for too long yeah and just been like poor standards being allowed to i don't but the thing

28:08Oly:is i do you know what i don't even think they have been dictating stuff i think they've just been do whatever they like.

28:14Rosa:But they've come into a culture where that's been permitted. Completely. And everyone's been out of it.

28:18Oly:Maybe they're in charge, are they? It's just like, do what you like.

28:20Rosa:The direction of football is Langer.

28:25Oly:It's simply impossible to respect.

28:26Rosa:He gets locked in his car every day.

28:28Oly:Yeah. He's still looking for his password. Yeah.

28:31Rosa:The man can't operate a lanyard. He's not going to come down on these players like a ton of bricks. No. They step out of line. So Deservey's had to come in and start smashing people about.

28:42Oly:Do you think he is speaking about like specific players?

28:48Rosa:Yes.

28:48Oly:And who do you think they are?

28:49Rosa:That's quite tricky now because I think the obvious culprits have gone. So unless he's talking kind of on a, on a kind of like in the, in the Royal sense of you like about kind of what's gone on and what's happened now is quite tricky to pin down. And you start going, is it some of the good guys? Is it some of the, you know, Because we seem to have got rid of like, not dickheads, because I think not all of them have been dickheads. But like, obviously there's been players that wanted to leave.

29:18Oly:Yeah. But now it becomes a trick.

29:22Rosa:I guess the only one that really stands out, and it pains me to say, is Saar.

29:27Oly:Yeah.

29:28Rosa:Which obviously he's mentioned, you know, in his comments today, that Saar, you know, What did he say about Saar? Well, he said basically, we'll see what happens as a good guy, but you see what happens in the last few days. So, Well, you know, it's pretty obvious that Sars, you know, time is up at the club. And, you know, I hope he's leaving on a good note because obviously he's been a big part of, you know, what little joy we've had in the last few years.

29:54Oly:Yeah, when I think of like the good feelings that I've had over the last couple of years, he's like in there.

30:00Rosa:Yeah.

30:00Oly:In and around.

30:01Rosa:You know, he has a nice vibe about him, doesn't he?

30:03Oly:That's the thing. He just seems like a good lad.

30:05Rosa:He does. He's one of the good, but maybe that's part of the problem. Or been part of the problem. But, you know, regardless, it's just like, I hope he's not kicking off a stink and, you know, and he's just getting his head down. But other than that, who really else would there be? I struggle to think.

30:23Oly:Because obviously there was the whole drama with Bergvau and that seems to have calmed down.

30:29Rosa:Do you think he's just publicly humiliated Bergvau? Wow. Like, you know, it's a bit...

30:36Oly:I mean, not on purpose, but maybe he just thought...

30:39Rosa:Unconsciously. Let's just see, like, you say you're good enough.

30:44Oly:You say you want to play. Here you go. Oh, you're not very good.

30:48Rosa:I know this is a bit...

30:50Oly:Are you both our hater now?

30:51Rosa:No, I don't know. Maybe. Maybe. Working on it. But you can't have him and Van Hecker on the same team.

30:57Oly:Yeah, yeah. Because you can't tell them apart. You cannot tell them apart.

31:00Rosa:And it's confusing. And I think having two people that blonde on the same team creates some sort of cosmic juju. and they repel one another and make each other worse. You've got to take one out for the other to thrive.

31:16Oly:And to be honest, after Saturday it wasn't clear which one that was going to be.

31:20Rosa:But I think we know. I think that proves the point.

31:23Oly:Yeah, because also, speaking, now this is when fans of the men's team understand the struggles of the women's team where it's just, even with Spurs women who are not that bad, there are still so many blonde ponytails all over the place and you have to work really hard and to be honest I'll do it for the women but I just can't be bothered of the men actually to be fair to him Connor Gallagher has realised that this is an issue and he's got rid of whatever was going on

31:54Rosa:Did you not give us the tips?

31:57Oly:Well I just, I don't, you know, as you know I'm not like invested in whatever Connor Gallagher is so I don't really care what my thoughts are interesting yeah he's british therefore i do not care um but yeah i was like i noted his hair situation and maybe that was why so actually he's on one thing good thank you for that connor yeah um should we talk about newcastle then basically we love to zerby we love his no

32:28Rosa:nonsense i'm liking it actually i want to see where how far he can take it yeah not too far because obviously it might become a problem.

32:34Oly:Well, this is the thing, because at this moment, it's all great, we're all on board, we're all like, we love you Italy and whatever. And it is a bit like good Conte vibes from the very beginning.

32:47Rosa:Are you doing kind of, are they all like Dormillo and Pizza Hut?

32:52Oly:No, they all like wine and opera and getting very stroppy.

32:58Rosa:Okay.

32:59Oly:It's a national stereotype, but it's more sophisticated. I just

33:05Rosa:I you know I like it we needed to do it yeah let's just let's just hope he doesn't like get into like a pattern like this is really working every time I like coat someone off yeah

33:16Oly:like everyone loves it

33:17Rosa:and then like eventually you're running out of people we're like no

33:20Oly:but also at some point he's going to come up against like a player that everyone's like please I do it to that guy yeah do you know what I mean like imagine if he like fell out of Archie I'd be it was quite sad wasn't it I don't know why I'm imagining bad things actually There's just enough real bad shit that happens I don't need to go there

33:38Rosa:Your Archie Grey fanfic can wait for another day

33:40Oly:You make it sound so creepy Sorry Wholesome Wholesome Archie Grey fanfic Right, let's look ahead To the weekend We've got one of our absolute favourite teams ever Coming back to play us Again, as they always do now we haven't beaten Newcastle since 2023 okay but December 2023 which is so close to being 2024 it's 27 to least 28 yeah it's been wretched it's been really bad

34:24Rosa:I think we've only drawn once in that time as well

34:27Oly:that was a superb draw in a wretched season, I'm not allowed to talk about Chris Romero anymore because we've had many arguments in our household about him. But I am going to mention him because that was one of my favourite moments.

34:45Rosa:The worst overhead kick ever.

34:47Oly:The slowest. But it's great. I can still catch it. Yeah. But at the same time, it's great because he gets fouled and then he gets up and somehow from there...

34:58Rosa:How's he wormed his way into this? Great.

35:04Oly:I love you, Christian Romero. I miss you. Enjoy your life. Back to Newcastle.

35:11Rosa:The Tenali Derby.

35:12Oly:The Tenali Derby. Do we expect this emotional reunion to be a positive or negative factor in his performance?

35:24Rosa:Hopefully positive. My only fear is it's coming a bit early. yeah I'd have liked him to go his feet under the table a bit more what I do want because I don't know if Joe Linton is playing but I want him to hunt him down and decapitate him that'd be really good that'd be really that's fine just get that before the match get that done that's some good

35:43Oly:gory fanfic

35:44Rosa:yeah and just then we can carry on and start the game yeah okay just do it move on I think we should be winning this I think we should be winning a couple right we should Based on what exactly? Okay. We're back.

36:05For what?

36:06Rosa:We're so back. They've had like their entire team ripped apart. All their best players. All their best players.

36:15Oly:They've lost Tenali, Bruno, Anthony Gordon. Who else? Is that it?

36:22Rosa:Gordon, Tenali. Yeah, names all of those. Did you always do this? Which I'm so excited. who else some others I'm sure some others obviously Eddie Howe's left so they've got this new manager in so it's all kind of in flux with them

36:41Oly:they looked they looked alright at the weekend

36:44Rosa:they didn't look great

36:45Oly:I thought Liverpool would like a steamroller them and obviously it's at St. Joseph's Park and that's a whole different vibe

36:50Rosa:and it was like you know the whole Kevin Keegan thing oh that's true all emotional stuff first game of the season doesn't count Everyone knows that.

36:58Oly:Very true. It's not even like the season hasn't actually started.

37:01Rosa:It hasn't started yet.

37:02Oly:Oh, yeah, this is your thing. Actually, the season starts on Saturday.

37:06Rosa:It starts this Saturday. Yeah. There's been a scheduling error. Yeah. Actually, it starts Saturday at 5.30, so make sure you tune in. I like to think that Tonali is just, it's just not a point to prove, just to be, but in a way, just be like, look where I am now. Huh? Tottenham are so much prettier than you

37:30Oly:we are so much prettier but counterpoint does it ever really work out like that for us I don't want to be like a drag do you know what I mean but I'm not like expecting do you remember when like Brennan went back when we played Forest and he got like like a bottle thrown at him and he had to go off

37:57Rosa:that guy

38:03yeah but

38:04Rosa:that's Brendan Johnson it's Brendan Johnson best man in the world

38:07Oly:but why were they so angry anyway we don't need to talk about we've already mentioned him loads for some reason I just I don't know do you think I can't imagine he's going to get he's not going to get emotional they're going to be big mad yeah

38:24Rosa:did you see that comment someone made

38:26Oly:oh it's a blessing in disguise

38:27Rosa:oh no someone called him oh there's Luke Edwards but he's nuts

38:30Oly:yeah it's really weird

38:31Rosa:he's an absolute lunatic I was like

38:32Oly:that's like when everyone went you know it's fine that Kane's gone because like he doesn't press and he wouldn't suit Andrew's style

38:40Rosa:oh no it was a Newcastle fan that called him a little goth

38:43Oly:oh I love that no he called him a fake goth fake emo goth fake goth something like that that's really good I love that feel

38:50Rosa:I hope it comes out in eyeliner

38:51Oly:But also, like, of all the things to call Tonali, that just seemed weird.

38:55Rosa:Yeah.

38:56Oly:Yeah. I mean, look, I could, obviously, like, just on a very basic level, if I was a Newcastle fan, I'd be really upset.

39:05Rosa:Yeah.

39:06Oly:And also the fact that he signed for them and played for, like, five minutes and was immediately banned for a year. And during which time I presume they paid his wages. I think he... Oh, did they not?

39:18Rosa:No, I think he took a moratorium on it or something.

39:20Oly:Oh, okay.

39:21Rosa:So I think he was quite decent.

39:22Oly:Then they waited. And so how long has he really played for them? Exactly.

39:27Rosa:They can't be bitter, can they?

39:28Oly:Well, no, but they literally can be. Like I would be livid if it was me. I don't care because it's not me.

39:34Rosa:We've given them loads of money for him.

39:36Oly:We have, yeah.

39:37Rosa:So it's only fair that we get to enjoy him.

39:40Oly:Yeah.

39:40Rosa:But coming to the game, I just think, I don't know, I've just gone mad. I think it was just like, I just look at our options now and just think, especially if you've got, Kudus back. Who knows what state he's going to be in?

39:54Oly:He hasn't played the 1st of January.

39:57Rosa:If you've got Bentancur, Tonali and Fernandes in midfield, I just think... And he's got to be Bentancur, by the way.

40:05Oly:Yes. Okay, so this is an interesting point because in his lovely running order for us, Jack said, assuming Tonali and Fernandes start, yes, of course, who takes the third midfield spot? is it Conor Gallagher or Rodrigo Bensicourt and I love the way we've just binned off Birdfell immediately yeah I mean

40:25Rosa:the joke's over

40:26Oly:it's done for now

40:28Rosa:I feel he's not a player that should start in games he needs to learn a lot yeah you know fine but I think what Bensicourt brings is A he's he's not settling into the club for one we need someone that kind of isn't like oh my god you know I'm trying to impress stuff he's already kind of battle hardened even if I think he's been there too long but he knows the team he knows that position he's got tons of experience he's a calm head he's just going to do the simple things well he can pick the ball up from defence

41:03Oly:he can do all of those things yes

41:06Rosa:but also he's got better players around him just think of some of the other Berks he's been passing to the last few years it's been awful

41:15Oly:it's been a bad situation all round yeah I'd you would definitely okay well I think I think I do agree because I think at this point I don't I'm a bit sort of over the whole kind of like runners I think the only thing yeah I think the only on quality I want people who are like I want players don't have to run who don't have to run because they're really good on the ball yeah they have like proper technical ability and the ball is not going to like some of these players like they have to run because the ball bounces

41:47Rosa:off them yeah they gotta go chase it yeah yeah i mean gallagher is basically a labrador he is a labrador and i don't care about dogs no fine that's gonna go down well i'm sure sorry guys i don't care basically yeah um um but the only thing i would say in gallagher's favor in terms of starting is Fernandes' fitness.

42:14Oly:Yeah.

42:15Rosa:Because I think he played the full, did he play the full 90 against Carton?

42:19Oly:Very nearly, if not completely.

42:21Rosa:So, which I was a bit surprised at. Yeah. Because, you know, given that he's been kind of not featured a lot in pre-season, you know, with this kind of tired leg or whatever it is he's got or had.

42:34Oly:Oh, really?

42:35Rosa:I think it's a tired calf which just sounds like, you know, something of vet treats.

42:41Oly:We just have like the weirdest injuries. Like, do you remember when, was it, Kodamorani had his dead leg? I wish he was deader. It's like, he's not our problem anymore. It doesn't matter.

42:51Rosa:It doesn't matter. The scars are still deep. Shit. So, yeah. That would be him only, but other than that, it's got to be, you know.

43:03Oly:Yeah.

43:03Rosa:Those three.

43:04Oly:Maybe he played Fernandes for the whole game just to get his fitness back up.

43:09Rosa:Yeah, but I just, I suppose he wasn't having, you know, after a while, Chalton were pretty much beaten.

43:14Oly:Yeah. I mean, they got tired, didn't they?

43:17Rosa:I think he was the one that took a whack as well, actually, if I remember. Right. I think it comes back. But we'll wait and see. Up top, though, I think that this is... No, no, no.

43:27Oly:Okay, so wait. Okay, do you want to do... So let's quickly do the defence. It's going to be our, like...

43:35Rosa:I think we're getting close to... Dutch Spur. I think we're basically at like first choice there now.

43:42Oly:We are. So the only issue is left back.

43:44Rosa:Yeah, I think it's going to be Roethlis. Do you? Just the doggy's kind of still, he's not started. Did he start? He did start, yeah. He did start. But he didn't.

43:54Oly:He started, but he didn't finish.

43:56Rosa:He did not finish.

43:57Oly:That man cannot play 90 minutes of football. Yeah.

44:01Rosa:I do think they're just kind of being quite sensible with him.

44:04Oly:Yeah.

44:05Rosa:Just making sure that he doesn't burn out because he has just, it's been like three seasons of kind of play 20 minutes collapse. So, you know, so I think on those grounds alone, it would be Robertson. I think, but on those grounds alone, I think Robertson's probably first choice now.

44:25Oly:I suppose the only issue is pace, right? Like Newcastle, what they do have is speed. Yeah, true. I mean, they did like, you know.

44:35Rosa:the ball you can run but you're not the thing is watching them against liverpool like liverpool

44:39Oly:had a lot of the ball but but newcastle like were ruthless with the counter but they are slow now you've seen van dyke pulling a caravan i have indeed it was really unfortunate um but yeah you

44:53Rosa:would hope you would hope that we could cope with that better yeah yeah okay let's let's let's get

44:58Oly:to the business this is what we really really want to talk about yeah so

45:04Rosa:for me

45:05Oly:yeah

45:06Rosa:tell Richarlison Moore

45:11Oly:actually physically changed me not the tell part everything else well I'm not Mikey Moore either but it's yeah we've done that bit we've had that bit of the season Spike

45:25Rosa:tell

45:26Oly:Matisse tell yes

45:28Rosa:Yes, I think that he will start. Yeah. I think he does need a game though. He's not starting the season brilliantly. I think there's a real player there. And I think maybe because he's been playing alongside Moore, who's a rookie, and alongside Richarlison, who's rubbish. Maybe he's felt a bit of the weight of the world on his shoulders. Yeah. And that's kind of hindered his performance. This is my cod psychology.

45:57Oly:Yeah. And I think you are because what you need in a forward line is when everybody contributes, then they all contribute more because it gives them the freedom to try things and the confidence to think, actually, if I make this pass here, there's going to be someone there. Not absolutely like it has to be me that does it. Everything like the responsibility is all mine to make anything happen. Like that's just exhausting.

46:27Rosa:It's exhausting. It kind of probably like narrows your thinking as well. Like you're not going to try and play a one, two with a child.

46:36Oly:I love that I've just brought you on board. Like you're not fully on board my tele-agenda, but I like that you have like committed to coming up with like loads of like experiences.

46:46Rosa:Spurious.

46:51Oly:But they are real. They are not spurious.

46:54Rosa:Okay.

46:55Oly:They are definitely rooted in some sort of fact.

47:00Rosa:There's hard science. Very. Yeah. Okay. Okay, so we'll say tell. Okay, let's. I think it's going to be Solanke.

47:11Oly:I think it is.

47:12Rosa:He's going to start Solanke. You know, I'm happy with him.

47:14Oly:Fine, yeah. And then it's got to be Savio. It is Savio. It's definitely Savio. He's ready. He's like, I'm here, guys.

47:22Rosa:So he'll be up against Lewis Hall. Okay. He's a pretty decent left-back, although he gave away the penalty against Liverpool. But he's pretty good. But it ain't no match.

47:34Oly:No. I think he's going to be... Well, no, I think that's just going to be so up for it, isn't he? He's like, this is good. This is what I'm here for.

47:41Rosa:I do. You know, kind of part of my fantasy about this game is that he's just going to be like, I'm free.

47:48Oly:Yeah.

47:48Rosa:And I'm going to show the whole world what I've got.

47:52Oly:Yeah. I just really I feel like we need like we really need this don't we we just I feel we need to get back on the cycle of because with Newcastle we either thrash them or we just get these kind of really dispiriting losses that like go on and on for like five games in a row and we need to get back on the cycle that's like the thrashing

48:17Rosa:we need to thrash

48:17Oly:we really do

48:18Rosa:and I think we need it's obviously stop winning home games because

48:24Oly:I think that'd be really good

48:25Rosa:but I think with the Charlton performance obviously the crowd's not going to be wild for that because it you know it's a game that we're expected to win yeah and it's

48:36Oly:it's a game where you can't really win it do you know with the Charlton one because we talked about this didn't we and it felt like it was the sort of game you couldn't win because you are expected to win and so if you lose it's really embarrassing but actually given that we couldn't really win it we really want it do you know what I mean yeah like

48:54Rosa:I think that's really clear

48:56Oly:I actually think it is really clear and I would like confirmation um anyway continue they're not gonna be as up like they're gonna be they weren't as up for it

49:05Rosa:yeah the crowd and I think if we can get a big home performance starting at the first day of the season tomorrow it's been really but but it's you know it doesn't even necessarily have to be a big result like even if it's saying like 2-1 or 2-0 but we play with some verve you know players like Fernandes pinging it all up

49:28Oly:they just show us something

49:30Rosa:Savio just like taking on his man creating chances

49:33Oly:is it going to take you a while before you can say his name like with confidence like is he Savio

49:36Rosa:or is he Savino yeah I'm going to stumble over it until about May yeah easily yeah so but you know I'm hopeful I'll get there I'm hopeful enough practice

49:50Oly:practice makes perfect I think my only, I feel like now I'm really excited about the actual team. I feel like the quality is there. It's just about when it's going to all come together. That's the thing. And how much work they still need to do on the training pitch and on their fitness to get it all, to get all of the moving parts moving together. Yeah.

50:20Rosa:It's going to take time. and I think we're going to have we're going to have some really great games this season just based on the quality of players but I do think there's going to be some bumps in the road and we're going to have some maybe some results that we didn't see coming we'll have to put together two or three really good results and then we'll get we'll stink and we'll lose embarrassingly oh shit, we'll be back to where we were and I think that's just going to be growing pains

50:48Oly:yeah Yeah.

50:51Rosa:And even though it was a pre-season friendly, I think Brentford was part of that.

50:55Oly:Definitely. I mean, we just did that classic thing of just go, oh, what? The season's starting.

51:02Rosa:Ready, yeah, yeah. Shoes on. I mean, most of our players have been bloody fry-ups in the tunnel before us.

51:10Oly:Honestly, I don't know what they were doing. I don't know what they were thinking. Do I want to know? Probably not. Yeah, so this is it. Like now it's like time. I at least want to see. I feel prepared for it not to go very well for a few games. But I feel like I just want to see some movement towards it getting better. Like I don't want to watch that. Like the rubbish that we saw last weekend. Don't give it. Don't serve that up again. We need green shoots. Some different rubbish. Green shoots, break shots. Exactly, exactly. But you think, but you actually think we're going to win this.

51:50Rosa:I think we'll stuff them. The shit. Well. 3-0.

51:54Oly:All right. I like that. Fine. I'm not making a prediction.

51:58Rosa:I'm just going to. But make a prediction. Go on. Go on. Have a bit of fun.

52:04Oly:One all. That is fun, isn't it? Glory, glory. Tottenham Hotspur. Do you have anything else you're like dying to get off your chest? about this club?

52:20Rosa:No, I think I managed to say it all.

52:22Oly:Yeah.

52:24Rosa:Do you?

52:26Oly:Like always, but nothing springs to mind right now. As soon as we turn this off, I'll be like, there's loads of stuff that I forgot to say. I guess I should say, where can people find you, Olly Lester?

52:36Rosa:They can find me producing Hometown Glory.

52:38Oly:How can they find you

52:39Rosa:rising around the city?

52:40Oly:They can find me speaking on Hometown Glory. And hopefully, we will both be invited back to rule the roost. Jack, we love you. We miss you. Get well soon. We love you, Jack. Peace out.

52:55Rosa:Other spares.

With Jack sidelined recovering from throat surgery, Oly and Rosa of Hometown Glory take the reins to dissect a hectic week of Tottenham Hotspur action and transfer business.

We kick off by reviewing the confidence-boosting 5-1 Carabao Cup victory over Charlton. We dish out heavy praise for Matheus Fernandes, ponder Mikey Moore's place after an impressive performance, marvel at Savio's instant goalscoring impact, and ask whether conceding a late goal highlights a lingering aerial vulnerability in the squad.

Next, we look at the arrival of Omar Marmoush from Manchester City. We discuss whether his time stuck behind Erling Haaland has masked his true potential, and analyse De Zerbi's glowing praise for the Egyptian's tactical intelligence.

We then unpack De Zerbi's latest press conference. With the boss hinting at one final signing, we ask if Cody Gakpo is the missing piece. We also read out De Zerbi's ruthless, no-nonsense quotes regarding player departures and squad discipline, debating whether this is exactly the culture shift fans have been begging for.

Finally, we preview the crucial clash against Newcastle United, asking how Sandro Tonali will handle facing his former club and who should fill the third midfield spot alongside him and Fernandes with James Maddison out injured.
