In short

Tottenham’s summer transfer surge—especially reports Spurs are signing Sandro Tonali and Matthias Fernandes—plus reactions to other midfield spending and the club’s turnaround after narrowly avoiding relegation.

Guest backgrounds

No guests appear in this episode. The host mentions a prior conversation with Alistair Gold (football journalist) but he is not present in this recording.

Key claims

Spurs are “acting like a proper club,” spending heavily and early to secure a full preseason; the host argues overpaying is justified because relegation would be far costlier. He frames the Lewis/Levy era as finally matching stated ambition.

Notable examples

Harry Kane scoring a “worldie” for England; Vuskovic (19) leaving/being sold; comparisons of transfer fees (e.g., “£85m is the new £35m”); references to Dortmund loan logic and Spurs’ past near-misses (Arsenal taking Eze, “Lasagna gate”).

1:15So, what's happening? What's going on?

1:23I've just kind of watched Harry Kane score a worldie. to win it when it looked like England were going out of the World Cup. We got off that.

1:43And then we get told by David Ornstein that Spurs are spending like£100 million on Sandro Tonali. Keep telling me I'm a bit out of practice doing this. I haven't done one of these, obviously, since the end of the season. This is kind of weird, but it felt like a pretty momentous occasion. It felt like, you know, this is the kind of time and space in which I can do one of these if I'm going to do one of these over summer. So hello. Hello, old friends.

2:23I mean, this is pretty wild, isn't it?

2:29it was kind of like a few weeks ago we were told we were after sandra tenali then it kind of got positioned i guess by people that we were then switching our attention to matthias fernandez and people were very happy with that and then there was some tentative talk that we were after both tenali and fernandez and we weren't nobody was going to hear that nobody was going to hear Spurs spending close to£200 million in one transfer window completely rebuilding the midfield considering we have also just spent£50 odd million on JP Van Hecker considering as well that we spent not that much further ago what?

3:26what was it 45 50 mil on conor gallagher now i know people have their opinions on conor gallagher but doesn't take away from the fact that we spent that money we gave him the number eight shirt what is going on what is going on are spurs number one are Spurs massive yes I think we know that we've been massive prior to this anyway but we're especially massive now number two

4:07we're actually acting like a proper club we're actually acting like the club that we've wanted Spurs to act like for a very long time now I know some people will have their opinions on Vuscovich going

4:25I don't love it I don't I don't look I'll say up front I don't love it am I that bothered not really I'm not I'm not gonna I'm not gonna feign rage about it

4:43the kid is supposedly going to be one of the very best players in the world at some point it's kind of a shame to see us lose that but he's 19 years old he wants to play right now i would say from the very small sample size but from a sample size nonetheless watching him against England the other night, which is Premier League standard, right? Let's be real. That's the level. He was awful. He was awful. He was just out of his depth. And he's 19 years old. It's been said that De Zerbe reckons he's three, four years off of being ready to play first team for us, right? But if he doesn't want that, if he's sort of actively out there kicking up a stink he doesn't want to go out on loan because I get all the arguments I send him out to Dortmund let's do this just if he doesn't want it at the end of the day right and if there's value to be had there we signed him for I don't know I thought it was around 20 but somebody said to me in my comments it was like 12 million euros or something when he was about 15 16 years old we've made a massive massive profit on him and I know the fear is always going to be that it's Brighton who are spending that money on him what do they know how much have they calculated they're going to be able to make a profit on him but maybe they're entering maybe they are quite simply just entering their own era of not being a selling club who knows but we've sold him for about 50 mil we've got first option on buying him back and we've got a 20 % sell-on clause

6:30i think it's i think it's i think it's all right you know i think it's all right and i also think ultimately if that's i know it's like a simp thing to keep on like parroting but if it's what does erby wants then the guy kept us up you know and look some people saying we've overpaid on tonali some people saying we've overpaid on fernandez some people saying we've overpaid on Van Hecker. If we'd have gotten relegated, it would have cost us twice as much as those players have cost us. I don't care. I don't care what supporters of other clubs think about Tottenham's business, number one. Because every other window, it's been, lolololololol, Spurs don't act like a proper club.

7:17Lololololol, Spurs don't pay up.

7:22How can they expect it to be taken seriously when they don't buy players blah blah blah blah blah and now of course now we are acting seriously it's Spurs are overpaying Spurs are desperate all that type of stuff I've just had a good chat if you've not caught it yet I've just dropped well a couple of hours ago I dropped a podcast I released today I had the pleasure of recording with Mr Alistair Gold really really lovely bloke really good chat um he wasn't I wasn't just gonna sit him down and ask him so what's going on with this transfer what's going on with that one have a good chat to him about Spurs about the season that's just been about his career about his thoughts on the way Spurs are portrayed in the wider media blah blah blah blah blah blah we also spoke about Toy Story 5 um so you know get that wherever you get your podcasts but the point that we were sort of riffing around is that there's nothing that Spurs can do that will be a success in the eyes of the opposition so we've just got to stop caring we've got to stop caring and it's time to just strap in and just enjoy it that's what I'm choosing to do you know I'm not I'm not going to sit here and overanalyze every single piece of business we do but do what you know do I see some flaws with signing Andy Robertson for example yeah but do I see loads of positives to it as well also yes

8:51and I think the main thing the main thing really that I want from all of this with Spurs is to just feel like the club actually want to compete we've been saying this for months years this ain't for years we want to feel like football matters to them that they care and look people are well within their rights to be skeptical of the lewises of the luai should i call them the luai as a as a plural people are well within their rights to be skeptical of them right but we've wanted them to show ambition they said in all of their various post mat post season letters and whatever to the to the fans we're gonna start walking the walk wait hang on yeah talk the talk walk the walk whatever it is they're going to idiom the idiom right

10:08and we've all said yeah i believe that when i see it i mean i think we got to start believing it folks do you know what i'm saying like i think we have to start believing it this is unprecedented this is uncharted waters for tottenham this is absolutely unprecedented the closest we've ever gotten to this type of thing was the magnificent seven summer after we sold gareth bale and we spent all the gareth bale money buying in all those players but that wasn't that wasn't a big show of ambition that was spurs buying after they'd sold their best player and you might say this is a delayed reaction to selling Kane if you wanted to be if you wanted to be really mean about it really mean spirited but why why not just enjoy it like I say we we nearly we nearly got relegated the world's biggest soccer tournament has arrived and you can trade the entire tournament on Calci on Calci you can trade every match from the opening stage all the way to the final on Calci you're trading against peers in a live market meaning there's no house and as the probability changes you can buy in and out of your position for a limited time download the calci app and use code cup 26 to get 10 when you trade 10 k-a-l-s-h-i calci trade the beautiful game 18 plus only restrictions and eligibility requirements apply event contract trading involves risk and may not be suitable for all investors prices values and available markets may differ from those mentioned for more information see calci.com regulatory every day in a footballing sense is a blessing now right that that in itself is is joy enough but not only did we stay up we are now making them all regret that they didn't relegate us they should have relegated us when they had the chance they should have done it while they had the chance they didn't did they the silly billies the silly billies

12:22it's it's it's ridiculous not only the thing is right as well right we're spending all this money we're getting it done early look how early we're getting this done it's first of july and we've already done significant business. We talk about a team having a full preseason as well, like we've always asked for. It's very hard to know how to process this other than, like I say, the immediate reaction, which is one of joy, which is one of happiness. And I'm going to choose to continue you to roll with that because I want to enjoy football football supposed to be fun it's supposed to be an escape from everything and look I'm not telling you you have to do this I'm just simply saying this is how I am choosing to roll with this now right give me give me at least five games when we lose the first five games before I start going on about Deserby and how we gave him too much power and everything, right?

13:31But right now, this little bubble is fun and it's joy. It's spending loads of money. We just bought Italy's best player. You know? We bought, like, a future Portuguese star. You know? It's fun. It's fun. It's not my money. edithofus says we are fucking massive ari7000x says awesome lfg all this as well all this after harry kane's goal harry kane man you know i've got to say that's that's the first one and i i'll be honest a good mate of mine texted me and said we might be witnessing harry kane's last international game and i said yeah he is becoming a bit of a lump actually and then within 10 minutes that was revised to him being a glorious lump

14:38but I mean I think that's the thing he's had a couple of moments Germany at Wembley funnily enough Tunisia in 2018

14:50there's a few of them like his first goal for England on his debut and all that sort of stuff but in terms of like like we've seen from Messi like we've seen from Mbappe from Cristiano Ronaldo I don't think Kane's had one of those real moments where he's stepped up as the star player of England and done what he did this evening in a big proper game and yeah I think there's just no denying there's no denying he's the greatest the greatest ever and it makes me happy for him uh it really does he's you know he's as i always say he's given me some of the best memories of my life as a spurs fan i'm never going to begrudge him anything um wonderful fella like great leader great player he deserves it he deserves it all i mean you know i'd love to sit here with any sense of conviction and say England to go on to win the World Cup because they've got Mexico at the Azteca next and you know and also there's France waiting for them somewhere if they do get through or Messi or you know Spain probably people are still forgetting about so you know but he's got that sort of big moment that's some that's the second goal the second goal is one of the best England goals I've ever seen.

16:24The moment, the pressure on it, and the actual sort of power finish, all of it. Look, people aren't here for an England talk, but what I'm saying is to see that and then to have the highlights and all the post-game chat finish and then go on Twitter and see Spurs are signed to Nali is serotonin, you know? It's Greaseby says, what have we done? What is£100 million really to a massive club like us? Absolute peanuts. I wasn't even being churlish. I said this on Instagram. Somebody said about Fernandez, you spend£85 million on a flop or something. I just said£85 million is the new£35 million. Kind of is, isn't it?

17:15No?

17:20Ben S says those gillionaire geezers finally gave a little. Aeris 7000X says we had to wait a long time for this. Feels like a dream. Alex Paramore asks what the fuck is going on? Joseph Simpson says I can't even describe the joy I'm having right now. Watching other fans get mad that we're finally spending. They are rattled. They are so rattled. So rattled. Rob Doherty says the Lewis family is putting their money where their mouth was after the season long may it continue keep selling those Matises Jay Tilly says Jackie boy we are fucking massive vibes are immaculate butterflies and zebras England win Kane scores twice we signed to Nali is the pendulum swinging back in our direction I mean is it is this is this the pact that somebody did one of you did one of you make this deal with the devil you know he's sat there saying look you're gonna come close to relegation and Arsenal are gonna win the league and maybe the Champions League but if you agree to that you're gonna go completely mental you're gonna sign loads of players and then you're gonna win the lot did one of you agree to Did one of you make that deal?

18:46Because thank you. Thank you if you did. Thank you for lending us your soul for doing that.

18:58Mr. Stephen Stotch says, I wonder what Levy is thinking right now. He was holding his back massively, it seems. I mean, I don't think there's any doubt about that. He's probably going to be thinking, are they going to Rizdale it? Are they going to Leeds it?

19:16I'm not really going to choose. I'm choosing not to worry about that, to be honest. Something that's been said to me by a few of my mates, but I'm not going to entertain those thoughts. I'm not entertaining it right now. That's what I'm going to say. Jack Howe says, when are we winning the league this season? We did the thing that Leicester did. We stayed up. And we're going to go on and win it, okay? that's not it's not itk but i've got a strong strong sense that that's that's maybe what's going to happen mr d shak says we deserve this after last season's torture we do mate we deserve this after no let's be real we deserve this after going a whole season unbeaten at home at white hart lane getting 86 points and not winning the Premier League.

20:09You know? We deserve this for getting to a Champions League final and having the game be over within 30 seconds. We deserve this for Arsenal taking Eze from under our noses and then he goes and scores a hat-trick against us. We deserve this for the lasagna gate. We deserve this for so many reasons. I don't care about other clubs. don't care about the hardships of our clubs I care about the fact that we are derided by everybody constantly and as I said as I said at the tail end of last season actually last year it didn't make me shrink away it didn't make me want to hide didn't make me want to say oh it's embarrassing to be a Spurs fan I hate this club I hate that they've done this to us i hate that we've been this bad when arsenal are this good maybe felt that at times but actually towards the end of the season i felt so defiantly tottenham i felt so like fuck all of you neville all of them every single one of them i wanted is gone every single one of them had joked about it every single one of them had prayed for our demise

21:32they can all do one spurs are massive we've signed two huge players there's just too much to enjoy right now um and i think we all just need to collect our thoughts on it and you know see what's next there's a lot of talk that the the business isn't done yet so we'll see we'll see what's next but right now let's just bask in this, let's just enjoy it it was only going to be a quick one tonight I want to go and watch the other World Cup game so appreciate everybody for tuning in at such short notice if you want to support the show, patreon.com slash RTR Pods you can jump on there get all pods ad free, you can get extra pods all that type of thing if you are, if you enjoy Rule the Roost normally you can support just join a supporter tier£1.50 a month helps cover some of the costs of running the podcast blah blah blah blah blah anyway much love please like please subscribe leave a rating review whether you're watching or listening much love come on you spurs we are absolutely massive
