In short
Tottenham’s relegation battle, fan support/protests, and who could realistically save them in the final seven games; debate over manager choice and club ownership decisions.
Guests
Big Jon Bass (co-host/guest). Background: Tottenham fan and football podcaster; discusses fan actions, media narratives, and squad mentality. (No other guest is named in the transcript.)
Key claims
- Even a win vs Nottingham Forest wouldn’t have made Spurs “safe”; it’s a relegation-battle mindset until mathematically secure.
- Fans’ “together always” support (including flares/bus turnout) was demanded by players; criticism that it “pressured” players is rejected.
- Spurs’ players lack mentality for pressure; they panic and make basic errors (example: ball-watching on Forest’s second goal, “Matassar”).
- Manager bounce hasn’t arrived; Tudor hasn’t fixed it, and further ownership/CEO decisions are questioned.
Notable examples
- Nicky Butt’s claim that fan displays should be for cup finals, not league games.
- Dejan Kulusevski’s injury update and “coded” international-break comments.
- Discussion of possible managers: Mason, Harry Redknapp archetype, and links to “Addi/Adolf Hütter” (rejected as a bad fit).

0:58Jack:Ugh.
1:19Jack:Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Rule The Roost podcast. A day later than usual. I do apologize. You can blame Charlotte having her cornea. Is it cornea or cornea, John? I'll accept either. Either's fine. You take either? Yeah, I'm not a pedant when it comes to the eyes. As long as no one's doing anything to my... I'll say cornea. As long as no one's doing anything to my cornea, I'm fine. Cornea sounds a bit like, I don't know, some sort of cream or something you get in Cornwall, isn't it? Yeah, or like a region of Italy. Oh, it's in the Cornea region, actually. It's really lovely, fantastic, why, why?
1:51Jack:Delightful, delightful. Yeah, we had a lovely summer there. um mate well you know you're feeling a bit more jubilant because i listened to big john bass show on on wednesday and you know you were kind of in that place of like i was hoping i'd be over like the forest thing by now but i'm kind of not and i'm i'm still just kind of licking my wounds a bit i think that's how i've been feeling for for a lot of the week and then before we started talking uh well at least recording we were chatting about the fact you know what forget it we got to go again like even as i've seen in my post match even if we'd have won we'd have still had to have gone again we wouldn't have been safe had we been forest same rules apply right we just got to kind of dust ourselves off now and get on with it don't we yeah this is it like it's i think it's completely acceptable that people felt absolutely gutted after that game like i felt as low as i felt and it has taken me a little bit longer than normal normally i'm like as soon as the game's over I have about an hour where I'm really wallowing and then the next day maybe if it's a real bad one and then I'm straight back into just like positivity but it's definitely taken me longer and it's definitely felt worse but my mind state has also shifted which it really is just about it's the situation that we're in we have to accept it right and once you accept okay this is a relegation battle then it isn't just like every game is a cup final mentality if we in this one it's all over which is where i've been if every single game i've almost been going well if we lose this one that's it and there's like nine games to go and i appreciate that with every loss and there's less games that you can't keep that theory going on forever but to your point that you made after you know your post-match um pod was basically like even if we'd have won that it also wouldn't have been over in a positive sense right it wouldn't have meant oh we're safe And so I think we need to kind of just really sort of take each game as it comes.
3:44And until it's mathematically impossible for us to stay up, then we need to, we just need to kind of stick with it. Right. And that's why I've been a big advocate for this idea of whatever people thought about the sort of fan action before the game. We've got to keep going with this idea. right this sort of together always concept of like you know working as a fan base working together with the players despite what's going on if you just immediately drop that then it wasn't true was it right and if we really believe in what we're saying and we're really believing in this idea of like right we're going to come together when it counts this is when it matters right you can't just do it once and then and kind of go well the players didn't do their bit so it's all over now we've we've got to just do our bit until the very very end because otherwise i will feel like that is that is unsatisfactory and i've had people say it to me this week like oh that was embarrassing like you guys out in the street with flares i'm like no no it's not it's it's the opposite of embarrassing right it's it's actually like to me it's like a big sense of pride of like most clubs couldn't do that for a cup final most clubs wouldn't be able to do this ever at any point and we we've really seen like what it's like to be able to put together
5:03Jack:i'll just say just Greek Arsenal fans are storming out on the 85th minute or so their cup final the other day do you know what i mean and well it doesn't need to always be a comparison to them but just to your point it's the fact we've rallied the fact we're we're looking at them winning what they're going to win probably this season i mean hope imagine imagine if they fucked it from here but still that's one for another day we've got the context of them doing what they're doing what we're doing this season and still there's what 10 at least 10 000 people show up for that bus turning up the other day um i've got to say i don't know if you've seen so in one of the most inexplicable football podcasts there is in the space nicky butt paul skulls and Paddy McGuinness have a have a podcast and uh Nicky Butt on that I just saw the clip going around on on Twitter and it rattled me mate he basically blamed the fans for Forrest he said that he said that showing up for the bus was too much he said that it put too much pressure on the players he said you can take that if it's a cup final because you have a general sense of nerves there and it's it's a good distraction but for a league game you could you can't be treated fans can't be treated in league games like that that's that's what you do for a cup final it rattled me mate but it's it's it's there if we're devil's advocating it is there anything in that whatsoever i don't even know why i'm giving it space and time but you know it's it's always worth you know being a centrist dad about this type of stuff sometimes isn't it oh mate always you know we know where we sit so we just just have to wear it yeah look i look there is some truth to it In the sense that the players, we know that they are quite mentally fragile and we know that they can't handle pressure.
6:42And when it's a more ferocious atmosphere, that is an element of pressure. So that little grain of truth is accurate. However, the only reason that this happened and the reason that we did this is that's what the players have asked for. They have all season been crying like little babies. Why aren't you with us? Where's the support? But, you know, granted, they've been on the receiving end of some boos and some quite nasty stuff, actually, if I'm honest, especially like the Vicario, that was a bit like personal aspects. So they've also got some legitimate gripes about getting booed. But I thought we agreed as a fan base, as a club, as a set of players, draw the line under the sand.
7:22We're all going to be together. We're going to come and sing. We're going to support you more than ever. Like, let's just work on this objective together. For then, and the players aren't saying this, obviously this is nicky butt's interpretation but him saying well that's put pressure on the players i don't care that's what they asked for that's what they wanted like were they not expecting this because from my understanding it's been made very clear to like all parties this is what we're going to do so this shouldn't have come as a surprise and as a shock and like i said it's what they've been asking for from us and we've like as a fan base we've delivered that also it's super rich just like forget the players and nicky button the media at large you know how many games have you watched this season whether the sort of the team like the commentary team have been banging this drum well this is a magnificent stadium but the fans they really need to get behind the thing and sometimes it will be like a protest day where something's happened in the transfer window or not as the case may be and the booing is a result of completely unrelated to the football but they haven't factored that into the context or it's related to something that's been said by one of the owners or whatever it might be that's completely unrelated to the football we then go four nil down or whatever we are and obviously that's when it's going to spill over the context just seems to get lost that it's just other Spurs fans don't really fancy it they're not really they're not really a passionate fan base so we go all right then we'll show you what a fan base we are how amazing we are as a fan base and what we can do and then suddenly that's a big problem as well it gets to a point where it's like well what what do you want us to do like how how will we you tell us media nikki bart etc how we're supposed to support what are we supposed to do because when we do nothing or do negative things that's having a negative impact when we over support which i didn't think was a real thing that's also an issue so i'm just getting more and more lost with what we're supposed to do then to satisfy these people you know like all that sort of all together always
9:17Jack:stuff i think it's great i think it's great having the fans and the players have this sort of show of unity and everything i've got to say though like if we go down last day of the season against everton it's going to be open season isn't it it's going to be i can see i could i could actually see somebody like starting on vicario's mum in a pub or something after you know they're always hanging around in the pubs like oh they're so great they come and watch their millionaire son play football right so what no i'm just i'm not i'm not calling out of a guy that's fair so everyone seems to like him what's so good about him you know yeah i wouldn't want to mess with her mate she's from the cornea region of italy so she'll have you know me and foot soldiers all over the shop um no but on that one like on a more serious note i i would be lying and i don't like to lie john But I would be lying if I would say I wasn't at all.
10:10Jack:Just had a little light inkling of rattlage about all the sort of international posts, the international break posts, players all looking very happy, smiley. Xavi Seaman saying, so grateful to be in this environment or something I think he said, you know, where you're a bit like, you know, Dejan Kulaseski. Let me just get Dejan Kulaseski's quote as well. So he was spotted the other day, like limping he linked up with the sweden team he's obviously he's obviously the national team captain he he linked up with him and he was hobbling about the place and i think some of the swedish media were a bit worried about him and i think alistair gold has said since no he's he had a follow-up little procedure done on the knee but it's actually coming along quite nicely and he said i understand that people are worried about me but it was for the wrong reasons i'm really positive i had a small procedure um and we found the problem everything should be solved it's slowly and surely a comeback i can see the light i feel better i have a positive feeling with two important matches and a world cup in two to three months that is how the book and chapter will end that's what i'm convinced of now now i know what you're gonna say i know you're gonna say he's on international duty he's probably been asked by the swedish press about sweden why isn't he talking about tottenham mate why isn't he talking about tottenham the team that have been looking after him for the past year and a half, nurturing him through injury, paying him a king's ransom of a salary.
11:40Jack:So he lives a life that most of us can only ever dream of. Why do they treat us with such contempt? Or, or, and this is, this is definitely, this could be true. Am I just overthinking it because we don't have any football and I'm sad that Tottenham are not doing very well? No, I mean, look, when he puts that message together or those comments together, it's just like a few extra words right he doesn't even need to change anything right he goes you know I've got these two games and this world cup and of course doing my very best to the end of the season for Spurs that's all he has to say it's one extra line and it's that like whether there's malice behind it or stupidity or what that sort of sums things up for me it's like there's either an element of spite from the players like coded messages and oh it's nice to be in a nice environment for a change kind of tone it's either that or like they just don't care and they're just like okay great this is quite nice to just be away from all this either way we we are hurt in here and you you could make our lives much easier no i'm not saying they have to rock up their you know tears in their eyes with an i love spurs t-shirt you know it'd be nice but it'd be lovely man you know it would give me a whole new perspective on a lot of these players but I am I do find yeah I do find it a bit galling like the sort of glee in which they're like glad to be away from this now on a personal level there probably is a little bit of glee to be away from it and it is nice to be in a change of environment they've probably got mates and they're looking for all of that is is fair enough but it's just very simple things that I think that they they just don't understand and what I what I'm trying to put it down to is it's not even the millionaire footballer thing it's actually just their age right i honestly do think that like when i was 20 i didn't take accountability for anything i had like terrible attitude to a lot of things and i could argue for hours and hours and hours why i was right even though i was definitely wrong right because you're just pig-headed now you put that into someone who their whole life has been told you're right you're brilliant you're the best you're amazing no one tells them no no one says like you should actually you know maybe you should include spurs in that comment because they might be upset he's like nah because i'm on sweden duty like it doesn't make any sense even though inside he might be thinking okay he's probably right but i don't want to change it now because i've said you know i'm on sweden duty so it's fine it's it's just like an immaturity level that i think that just on a sort of human level i can kind of i can kind of understand it it doesn't make it easier or any nicer for us to like perceive that stuff and on a more yadar note the most shocking thing is the fits the drip some of the outfits these lads are wearing are absolutely rascal now in my day when like you know footballers would be like going on international duty remember there's that famous picture i think it must have been like man united and they're all wearing sort of boot cut jeans white trainers right that was as like edgy as it got and that was basically just like the more expensive version of what most geezers on a saturday night were wearing down oceana it's like they've gone to another level of just like i'm gonna wear the most obnoxious shite um just to prove that i've got loads of money and i'm in really good shape it's like oh look at me i'm really fit oh just do one just go there and it's just like a lovely just a lovely outfit why have you got to wear like i mean the french squad i don't know if you've seen this is a little bit off topic jack but the french squad eka tk's outfit if you haven't had a chance to look at it looks like you know the old asylum jackets with like the long sleeves that they wrap around your but fucking ridiculous.
15:14So yeah, I'm just, I'm too old to be commenting on basically like these young lads attitude.
15:19Jack:But this is definitely the whole sort of fashion parade. God, look at that. Look at how fucking comedy they do. Fashion parade. The fashion parade though, that these lads, this is something quite new. Do you know what I mean? Like there was, in our day, there was David Beckham, you know, and he sort of stood alone as a bit of a, a bit of a twat. do you know what I mean now it's a sea of twat like it's but they haven't got they haven't got the talent this is the problem right it's like if you think about all the players from the 90s era like the absolute ballers they were just absolute Debenhams MS like outfits like CNA classics their mums were buying their shirts for them still do you know what I mean yeah you'll look nice in that one you know whereas and you're right it's like Bex would just like I don't know wear a sarong and the whole world would have a meltdown because they're like what is happening like football's absolutely gone and now it's like that would just blend in as just a normal outfit but they haven't got the star quality to back it up like it just I don't know this is very very much old man chat but I do think it's sort of symptomatic of uh to bring it back to Spurs I do think it sort of highlights the mentality issue that our squad has got and I know there's been a few people I think Harry Brooks was talking about it this week and he was basically saying like our players they don't have the like mentality of players in squads where most seasons they're trying to finish above the relegation zone and so when they have bad results and you know bad moments in a season they kind of not accept it but they kind of understand okay this is just part of it but we just need to get x amount of points to get us in this position and it might not come for four five six games don't panic we'll get one and that'll be the one that gets us out of it Whereas our players are in this like free fall of just like every game is so big and is such a panic and they are going, right, what we need is the fans to like get involved.
17:09We do this big show to them that we're like involved and then suddenly like, oh my God, that's even more pressure and they can't cope with that either. And I do think there's this like sort of cognitive dissonance between where we are in the league, right? And every individual, if you ask them, like, do you think you are a player of a quality that should be in a relegation battle? they would say no but yet they are the players who are collectively in a relegation battle and they can't see that it's like no you you individually have to perform better and as a team you guys need to perform better it's only really on you because at this point if you if you are genuinely feeling as a player that you are just like streaks above this level in the league it's not really even about the manager if i'm honest right like this idea i think we get obsessed with like tactics and like how things are done and it's got to be like the minutiae of every detail is the manager's responsibility but fundamentally if the ball's getting played out wide and a runner is coming into midfield and you're just ball watching as you run into the box like Matassar on the second goal against Forrest that's on you mate the manager can't do anything about that for you just look over your shoulder or run with your body open so you can see both the ball and the man that's just basic errors and I'm not picking on Sok because I actually like him a lot but it's sort of you know i love him he he really frustrated me as well but that was but that's a particularly bad game from him didn't it it did and that's just like a sort of again i don't want to pick him out but it's just a good example of the kind of thing that i'm talking about where it's like it's just that is basic and there's no doesn't matter if pep guadiola or sir alex ferguson is in charge of that team they should know to not ball watch like that is basic so like they all need to take a good look at themselves and think about what they're doing and that's like across across the team whether you bond over streaming binge worthy

Do you see Flav saying, I'm pretty sure it's in that same pod you're saying Harry Brooks is on. Flav saying that Pep Guardiola could even come into this team and we wouldn't do anything. We had a question here from Joe Lewis Smells, who says, if we had our pick of any manager in the world, is there anyone who could get us out of this mess in seven games?
21:07Jack:Or is it all on the players? Because I think this is an interesting question purely because do you think you need a different type of manager for a situation such as this or do you think we should be and let me link this to what's going on in the real world right now because there's some talk i think we're basically look this pod by the time we get this out mate might be out of might be out of date like sounds like ego tudor is going to get sacked any minute um i think the club are trying to be somewhat respectful given his sort of personal situation a lot of the talk is that they're trying to get Deserby in.
21:44Jack:They're trying to get him to take on this challenge, become our permanent manager now. Get us out of the mess and then take us into next season. Casey Keller was, for whatever that's worth, but Casey Keller was saying yesterday he thinks if Spurs made a proper, concrete offer to Maurizio Pochettino, he would ditch the World Cup and he'd come back to Spurs because it's where his heart lies. I can't help but lie, I think there's a little bit of me that kind of agrees with that as well. If they literally had down in a contract, we want you, here's a five-year contract, here's a guarantee of£150 million to spend in summer, you have complete overseer with the squad, you appoint the director of football, you are the man.
22:27Jack:I think he'd ditch a World Cup and come back to Tottenham for that. But the point is, back to the original point, is that what we want right now, John, or do we literally want, and I'm being deadly serious when I say this, Do we want a Daishi or somebody to come in who has been in this situation, who has been in the mud, who knows what it takes to fight your way out of this? For the seven games, for the seven games. Yeah, yeah. So I think there's been a lot of back and forth on this. I was hoping that when Tudor came in, that that would give us the manager bounce and that he wouldn't be the right person long term, but he would give us what we needed, which was just enough to get us out of this situation.
23:05And then we go to some and we move on. and as it sort of drifted and drifted and drifted and we haven't had that manager balance like we just haven't had it um it does sort of worry me that okay well this is as i said before this is clearly the players as well like they are underperforming across the board and that they they need to take a good look at themselves and raise their level but there is also like the aspect of okay fine let's just accept that's the case why aren't why are the managers we've had not able to get this reaction out of them. What is it about them? Because Thomas Frank is almost like the geography teacher that nobody respected, and so they just messed around.
23:41Tudor is like the hard-ass PE teacher who makes you train outside in the snow. I think we need to try the cool media teacher who's actually just really sound, and he just lets you watch Sopranos when it's raining outside, because that makes you feel good. And you go, do you know what? I actually am going to work hard for this guy, because I don't want to lose all these privileges of just having a laugh and being with my mates and it's actually going pretty well that's the only thing i can think of that is an alternative to this because they clearly haven't reacted to a disciplinarian because that's what eagle tudor is really it's the old-fashioned italian style run harder work harder suffer we're going to suffer through games the conte marcello lippy kind of you know philosophy on football that hasn't worked clearly right it just doesn't it hasn't so the next thing is to try either a relegation specialist and most of those like the Allardyce Deitch type it's very like we're going to sit in and defend and we're going to scrap and try and do things the problem is is that I think that spurs being in the situation actually makes that more difficult because we don't have like box defenders who are just like lumps who can just sit and defend their box because our composition of our squad already is a mess but it's certainly not set up to be like this sort of solid defensive unit we've got fullbacks who are basically wingbacks we've got really danso is the only like proper defender like a defender's defender who can actually do it all head it mark people tackle people he's like he's great right but he's he should be the third choice center back our two center backs aren't typical defenders, if you like, right?
25:24Like Romero is a fantastic footballer, but I wouldn't say he's a fantastic centre-back. In a modern game, that works because you need them to be fantastic footballers. But if you're in a relegation battle, you just need a solid defender, which is why like Murillo and the other geezer at the back, Forrest, just like monsters because their objective was just sit in and head stuff away. And they looked incredible at doing that. Van der Ven's not good in the air. Neither is Romero. Neither of them are good in the air. So you can't sit in because they'll just pepper balls in the box and then what you're going to do so for me it's like i don't think the deich alla deich type opt option really works for us in our circumstances because of the way that we're set up so i think if you're going to take a punt on changing things you're going to have to go for a vibes based arm around the shoulder we're going to do the opposite we're going to score loads of goals we're going to concede a few but we're going to we're going to score loads of goals that's what we're aiming for that's what we're going to do we're going to set ourselves up to give it a go and score loads of goals.
26:21And that's why I've been using his name, but it's just like emblematic of like the type of person. It's like the Harry Redknapp School of Football. That's what we need. We need someone who's just like, don't worry about like stressing yourself out about this stuff. We're just going to bomb up the pitch and give it a go and press high and win the ball back and give it to our attacking players and get more of those attacking players on the pitch together and instilling a bit of confidence. So like, let's say the Harry Redknapp archetype manager, it's just a figurehead. you can still bring in like younger coaches a mason or like a defoe or whoever around that person but this idea that like because harry redknapp is like 80 million years old that the players therefore won't respect him they don't respect anyone they didn't respect thomas frank and thomas frank was like a contemporary essentially data driven did well they would have played against his team they didn't give a shit about him they didn't respect him eagle tudor played for Juventus in the best era of Juventus.
27:16He was like a solid, respected player who's a massive hard bloke.
27:19Jack:Did he win a Champions League with him? Well, I mean, he definitely won a few Scudettos for sure. I feel like he was around that era where it was way harder to win stuff, but maybe he was in that team that won it. But they don't respect him and he's a massive hard bloke as well and they just seemingly don't care about that. So this idea of like, oh, well, when Harry Redknaut was a manager, who cares? do you think they know who Addy Hutter is? They don't know and they don't care. What they will care about though is a manager comes in and goes do you want to have some fun? Lads, it's been pretty miserable hasn't it for the last year?
27:51Would you like to have some fun and play some attacking football? There isn't a single footballer on earth who doesn't prefer attacking football to defensive football. So if you give them this license to go look, we've got basically whatever we've got seven games left to save this season. Why don't we do it having a bit of fun? Why don't we do it with a bit of pride? Why don't we go out swinging? in why don't we like attacks and score some goals let's go let's do it and have fun with less pressure on us to like make this this big thing i feel like that's more suited to these group of players mentality i'm not saying it's right or that it's perfect but given where we are and given what we know and what we've seen so far this is the only thing we haven't really tried and so to me if you're gonna make a change that's the route i would go and try to see if that has an impact and if it doesn't then there's nothing you could do with these players right
28:38Jack:I mean, if he gets us out of it, then fine. I'll eat my words and all that type of stuff. But I haven't even been able to really bring myself to talk to you about the Adolf Hutter stuff, Addy Hutter. Because it just seems like one of those things, doesn't it? Where you're like, what are you thinking? Because for everything you're saying, I agree with you. I mean, for me, really, the only viable candidate now is Mason. And it's who you build around Mason. because I think he knows the club. He loves the club. He knows most of these players. He's available. He likes to play attacking football. To me, it has to be him.
29:18Jack:And yeah, if you have a Harry Redknapp as a sort of a glorified cheerleader, if you like, imparting some advice. Exactly. Being the face of it all. Look, I know I continue to say this stuff, but I truly mean it. I truly mean it. The second Harry Redknapp walks in the door here, the Sky Sports, this and that. The narrative around Spurs is flipped. It's no longer Gary Neville saying, let's send Tottenham down. It's going to be good for the league. It's good old Harry. Can he save Tottenham? And that stuff, you know, that stuff matters. I'm sorry, it does. Like it really, really does because right now they are desperate for us to go down.
29:58Jack:Everybody is desperate for us to go. Did you hear that Fletch thing? The BBC. I was so rattled, mate. I was so rattled. That media thing, mate, is such a good point. And I think that's the bit that people miss, right? It's like, yes, there's an element of the players and how they see it and who they respect. And as I've said before, I don't think they respect anyone. But if you put Mason in that room with them, you put Defoe in that room, people that they do know and respect, Redknapp can become the face of the media, essentially, right? He can kind of leave the details to those guys, but he can create this like feeling and emotion and it'll give a good connection with the fans but i do think the media points are really interesting one because rednap is like a beloved figure in like british culture almost certainly in football culture right and if you think about i've heard you talk about it before the sort of the var aspect of gary never always been an arty boy all that stuff right and that they they get impacted by this right which they absolutely do like it's an it's a either overt or unconscious bias based on what they're hearing and what they're seeing and how people talk about it.
31:04And if Harry Redknapp comes in, I guarantee you we'll get a penalty. We'll get one. Because he will be on the sideline. He'll be with the refs. He'll be in front of the sky cameras. And it will be, oh, good old Harry, backs against the wall. What a hero. Can he do it again? The wheeler dealer's back to save Tottenham. Like, happy-go-lucky Redknapp. All of that stuff does make a difference. It shouldn't, but it does. And it's an intangible thing that I can't prove and I can't demonstrate. He won't get the job, so I won't have to. But I feel like that would make a difference to us. It would just sort of turn...
31:40If you're a believer in sort of energies and dynamics and stuff like that, Harry Redknapp is sort of a force for positivity in the footballing universe. So if you just inject him into this scenario, it would give us something. And I think the issue that we've had is we've basically had sort of neutral people injected or even negative people injected into the situation too many times. And it's just tilted us over. So I would give it a go. My worry is, to your point, that they've looked at the situation, the people in charge of making these decisions, and they've gone, right, yeah, hear what everyone's saying.
32:17Why don't we get this obscure Austrian manager who's managing in France, who's got a name quite similar to someone who probably isn't great for the fan base. I just don't understand the thought process of what we're really doing here and that really is one why we're in this mess and two why it's a real worry about what we do next because I have literally no faith in Vinay Langer and the Lewis family as it stands so that I think is going to be the most interesting thing is like what we actually do next and to a certain extent based on who we've been linked with if he wants to carry on I probably would stick with Tudor at this moment in time because unless it's going to be this sort of fellowship of the redknapp, I don't want to see some of these names I'm seeing because I just don't think that will work.
33:08Jack:Well, this leads us on nicely to Ledbury King's comment that says, Can there be any justifiable reason why Vinay and Langer are still at the club? The thought of them involved in any further decision-making is so depressing and further evidence of gross negligence from Enoch. Get them gone. It's hard to disagree with that, isn't it? I mean, can you see any... I guess the justifiable reason, I would say, on a practical level is you can't bin off two important figures at the top of the club at this point in the season if you don't have a viable alternative because then it is truly rudderless. So I guess you might as well have a captain that's steering you towards an iceberg, then, I don't know.
33:53Jack:should you i mean they're both quite bad aren't they really like yeah i was trying to think of the alternative then i was like i mean the steering towards the iceberg it's quite bad actually isn't it so yeah it's basically like would you rather me fly a plane or autopilot probably autopilot yeah yeah um yeah i certainly think in uh langer's case like we don't we don't need him right now um that being said i actually think he's pretty good uh identifying young talent right so if it was if it was me if i was basically responsible for what happens next so i can hire the ceo i can decide what happens to langer and i can hire the manager i would basically say to langer look whatever happens this season whether we go down stay up we'd like you to stay on at the club but we'd like you to stay on as like head of youth recruitment if you're not willing to accept that and you want to go for you know another director of football job that's fair enough we understand that that's what we're offering to you we keep keep you on the same money but that's what we see as an offer view do you want to accept it yes or no if he says no i'd just fire him immediately right out the door see you later thanks thanks for coming goodbye with vinai i've been fairly like defensive of not of him personally but just of the idea of like as a ceo like your sort of time horizon for the things that you put into play it does take a bit longer right like it does just require more time and you're putting in strategic changes that sometimes you're looking at two or three seasons that being said I do think that he's done enough bad stuff in this short amount of time relatively speaking that he's been here to just justify just firing him and I do kind of feel like at this moment in time there are probably other tasks like for example the sort of liaising with the fans to organize things where you know the CEO needs to be a sort of across those things So just from a purely administrative aspect, I would give him a stay of execution till the last day of the season.
35:49And whatever happens, he is getting fired. And then the policy would be written in like no one with a connection to Arsenal can be in a senior position at the football club. Like they just can't. They can't be in that position. Now, it might be completely unrelated, but I just think it makes no sense. and on some level I do feel like it ties into this idea of like standards at the football club you know that young lad the coach who was like an Arsenal fan like basically bragging mugging us off like oh yeah I'm actually Arsenal but I work for Spurs lol and I don't know their badge touch it's like get out then you're fired like if you're not gonna be here and committed to that you know in any other walk of life right if like a McDonald's employee was like oh I actually like love Burger King so much I've got a Burger King t-shirt on and they were tweeting it they'd be fired they'd be fired for that right and you can't just go around like supporting essentially your main competitors and expect not to that to have an impact on how you approach your job now I'd like to think that he's like professional enough where it doesn't inform his decisions but people are people if I work for Arsenal I know I wouldn't give it 100 % I know I wouldn't because how could I?
37:01Like, it's so ingrained in me to be Spurs that certain things I'd be like, oh, just who cares? It's so true.
37:08Jack:But it really is. Even if I was there as like video editor or something for them, there'd be that bit of me, I'd be like, not that bothered. It's a decent salary, don't really care, you know? Yep. And that's that. And you can say, oh, you're like, well, that's, you know, these are professional people at the top of the game. Professional people at the top of any game do all sorts of mad shit, right? They do all sorts of mad shit. They're not perfect. They're not infallible. Like most of... If you think about most of the sort of famous, successful people, industries and that kind of stuff, they're always up to no good drink driving or like getting done for drugs or fraud or whatever it might be.
37:43They're not perfect. So this idea that they're not just going to be a little bit biased against a football club that's their biggest rival, that's just to me just obvious.

37:52Jack:It's really annoying. I think it was on one of the BBC pods or something the other day, one of the football dailies. They had like... they had like one of those old like premier league journeymen on there um fuck who was it i can't remember who exactly who it was but essentially his point was you know there were definitely there were definitely days as a professional footballer when you just can't be asked when you feel like you can't be asked and he he used the expression you'd mark yourself out of a game you would the way in which and we see this all the time at tottenham you just stay a bit too close to that opposition player you can see the pocket of space that you could run into if you wanted to pick the ball up but you can't be asked like and so the idea that like they all try their hardest every single game and everything just isn't true like in any walk of life your job gets normalized the amount of money you get paid becomes irrelevant because whatever that's where you're at and that's the money you get paid and you don't look none of us none of us sit there really every single day i think you know what i am i am so grateful that i am in this socioeconomic bracket you know that you don't you don't because it's just human nature you've got your you've got what you're given and you do your job and you get on with it but um that's why you know and i think this is why i don't think the clamoring for more youth team involvement the more the clamoring for more players who are have some sort of you know like the adam scott the the bournemouth kid you know why there is a clamoring for players like yeah all right his his stats and everything might not be as good as say somebody else of a similar profile that would cost a similar amount of money that we could get in from the Bundesliga or whatever but like you say you've got that kid there when Spurs are 2-1 down in a North London derby and it's the 88th minute and everyone's knackered who thinks fuck it I want to score against Arsenal I want to do this to Spurs because I've stood on those terraces with my old man and I know what this means to everybody there because it means something to me as well still to do this those things are intangible and they do matter um and that's i guess this is kind of one of the main things that like we were we were all having conversations about a few weeks ago and you're right like when we were talking about the coach and all that type yeah the the the the arsenal fan coach that was immediately ripping the piss out of spurs when he'd gotten a job at tottenham it does it does of course it matters to have people in the building who care about the building you know like it football isn't just a company it's not and this idea this sort of thing that we gaslight ourselves with well it's just a job they're just professionals yeah sure if we choose to view it that way but there's still an academy full of lads there who are all talented who all really live and breathe this football club half of them still support the club you know like let's let's bring a bit of that energy back into play i mean we'll just brush on to daddy chimbonda's question which is uh in a theoretical world where if it was an absolute guarantee that sol campbell coming in as our interim manager would keep us up would you go for it no absolutely not and if that's cutting off my nose to spark my face i couldn't care less dan hicksy dan this is a good one john says how bad does it have to get for there to be serious protests against this ownership as in the same sort of energy that's been in support of the player i'll use his exact words as in the same sort of energy that's been seen in support of those absolute flannels on sunday it's relegation isn't it yeah that that that will and if it isn't that then i don't i don't know what it will take because that yeah it's the sort of undeniable binary failure that you cannot deny right and if you look at incidents across the season in terms of you know the sort of drastic about turn to go from a manager like Ange in terms of his style of football and we were told like we are creating a brand of football at Spurs that doesn't matter who the manager is right we're creating this system so that we can bring these managers in we're going to play you know front foot attacking football so Ange is the current coach that plays that way but we'll bring in other coaches in the future that will also fit the system well then they brought in twice frank who doesn't play in any way the same as as ang and that's had a drastic effect we were told there's this war chest but it was just too late for the summer because we've only just been in charge you've been in charge the whole time you could have given us the war chest you could have given the war chest to daniel levy if you wanted to before you fired him but it was all sort of like oh we've got rid of levy and we're going to have this war chest but sorry there's only like a week or so left of the transfer window now so we'll do it in January.
42:29Fast forward to January, when we really need to spend the money, we don't spend it. We'd buy one player we didn't need, who was available, and we thought, oh yeah, that's good, we'll get him in now because that's a good price. But we didn't need him. We needed other players, very obvious positions that needed strengthening. And not only was it a case of, because I've heard people talk about the Brennan Johnson thing and of like getting a replacement for him, but immediately Kudis was injured. So even if you just wanted to replace Johnson, you also definitely now needed to replace the injuries acute us it's this absolute lack of again it's just if you just look at on a very basic level forget all of the other problematic issues with the way they've treated us but just on like investing in your playing staff they haven't done a good job and i've heard so many like arguments about well actually they do spend money and actually we have spent a lot sure but you've got to overspend right it's not about spending what you can get it's speculating it's overspending that is how if you're like a team that wants to finish fourth and you're currently a team that finishes sixth you don't spend the same amount as you have been spending to finish sixth again you've got to spend a bit more to move up the league we're now in a position where we've been consistently sliding down the league and spending the same if not less and less so it doesn't make sense if you stand still in this league you will get left behind and so i just i can't see a world where we get to the end of the season if we do go down where it should be people in the streets basically exactly like it was for basically for the parade right when we won the Europa it should be like that but like we've had enough of this like you have to get out of this club now and I know people say well you know they won't but I think this should would be the unifying thing where it's like okay can we all just be on the same side here that whether you have some sympathy with them or not that they aren't delivering what they said they were going to deliver and that we just need to be united fan base and I think part of the reason why this has been allowed to sort of slide is because I think there's an obsession with people wanting to point score against each other than to unite and I think it's only been really changed for Tottenham who have approached this topic in a much more inclusive way that it's not trying to say we're right you're wrong no no it needs to be like this they're just saying like we want to see change right and we want to see like the club footballing side be put first everything else that's been in this world has been so divisive and so like oh if you don't agree on all of our talking points you're you're the problem none of us are the problem none of us are the problem so we need to sort of get this out of our head and we saw how powerful we can be as a united fan base when you know we had to come together for that so yeah mate it's it will be that will be the defining reason and it's hopefully it won't come to that and we stay up and people can still see okay well we we were that close from going and that also triggers it because if we do stay up we'll go down next season if nothing changes like that you can pretty much guarantee we'll be in another relegation Zootopia 2 has come home to Disney+.

No, there needs to be pressure on them, whatever happens. Did you see the video of those geezers laughing at the fans in the director's box after the Forest game?
47:54Did anyone find out who they were?
47:56Jack:I mean, they're probably just suits. They're probably nothing to do with Tottenham. They'll be guests of something. but again it's just the optics of that type of thing it's just terrible in it it's so i you know i don't if i'm being brutally honest i don't really agree with the whole like screenshot in people's faces and putting it out there because whatever it for all we know it's somebody who's just laughing a bit nervously do you know what i mean and you take a screenshot of that and it looks worse than it is but i'm not gonna lie there weren't there was that little bit of me it was like he needs knocking out him he's knocking out yeah i'm not gonna do it but i hope some other horror it does you know yeah um do you like whiskey jump you know whiskey man i'm not a big boozer but a friend of mine what we usually go away for easter and we do this thing which is like basically we call it an indulge session and someone out of our friendship group it's their turn to do their indulge so it'd be like indulge bass right and then you basically pick a topic that you're really passionate about and you tell everyone about it so he did a whiskey tasting thing so what i found out is i like um smoky peaty like lafoy kind of vibes that's the one i liked the most but i wouldn't say i'm really like i don't really like i wouldn't pick it basically well ron b has asked uh top five whiskeys to accompany a successively depressing tottenham result and then followed by please drink responsibly um nice i do like a scotch like you i do like it i do like a peaty bastard just off the top of my head i would say i like so i got a lovely bottle of the yamakaze like a distiller's reserve got that for my 40th off of brother phil friend of the show um which is a lovely lovely smooth bramelli with a nice little punch to it number very clean very clean drinking crisp lovely stuff the mccallon standard it's a good it's very very high high-end whiskey but a good one very nice not super high end don't get me wrong like it's still quite high street but it's it's a nice one ban little bay that's one of mine is fake look at me coming to life talking about whiskey what an old soak oh ban's little bay again you'll like this one john it's nice okay but smooth it's got a full it's got a heady you can have a good old light you can swill it around in your mouth and it got that good nose feel on it you know like it's it's a lovely one standard as a standard just a talisker 10-year that's a standard high street bottle but lovely one i love a talisker and uh i'll chuck a bourbon into the mix woodford reserve i like i like a bit of bourbon every now and again so it's a nice it's it's it's an almost like scotchy bourbon as well um it's it's still still essentially a bourbon it's still got that rounded carameliness um and It doesn't have the peatiness, obviously, but it's still a nice one.
50:41It's a nice smokier flavor.
50:45Jack:So there we go. Mate, you know what we should do? Maybe not this summer because obviously it's the World Cup, so there will be stuff going on. But you know like when there's like dead time in the football season and it's like, what do we do for content? On my pod, people always take the piss out of me because I'm always like gulping my drinks. And one of my listeners said, we now have an XG for your pod, expected gulps. so we could we could combine this and do some sort of whiskey tasting uh with expected gulps and see you know how what the crossover is like so it's like yeah whiskey see how quite how problematic and yadar our opinions get towards the end of that podcast yeah yeah yeah it never gets released because we get onto politics we better cut that bit out oh yeah well i don't know about that bit john i mean i wouldn't say it on twitter but you know your 20 minute monologue of how much you love Margaret Thatcher.
51:37Probably wasn't great.
51:39Jack:Surprised everyone on that one. I thought you were a bit hard, you mate. Well, you know, whatever. Well, it's all right. Maybe you'll like this one a bit more, John. Blair Dunlop says, top three crisps, then as a follow-up point, top three maize-based snacks as well. So I'm guessing we're having that differentiation between like a potato crisp and a maize-based. Yeah, yeah. My favorite crisp of all time, and I'm not saying it's the best, I'm just saying it's my favourite, is spicy tomato snaps. Absolutely. Gully, the streets know that that is an absolute classic crisp. Do you remember quarterbacks?
52:19Jack:Cheeseburger quarterbacks, beef burger quarterbacks. So yeah, definitely, they're my number one. Second spot, I'm a big fan of salt and vinegar McCoy's. Just to be clear, none of this fancy crisp garbage. like i i do appreciate that on another level you know it's like people are like oh what's your favorite drink and then they'll they'll list out like really high-end stuff but actually what they drink the most is just like what they drink at home it's kind of like that with crisps some vinegar mccoy's um and then it's difficult i really really like and they are not everyone's favorite i'm a big fan of skips just just like them just anything basically salty fishy um i do also big shouts to pickled onion monster munch because that is absolutely grab bag or nothing because they're they're just so good grab grab bag or go home yeah exactly and then maize based i mean doritos sort of cornered the market but there's like there's again there's this like boutique brand which i don't even know the name of them that make like really nice tortillas and this is useless because i don't know i can't remember the name of them but if not then yeah just just doritos uh what's the red one is it the one no i know is it the one it's called like casa nino or something like that isn't it yeah yeah exactly
53:36the jalapeno uh one it's in the beige and green uh coloring that one's amazing and there's like a really spicy one with like orange and blue that is those two the the bag itself has a real premium
53:48Jack:feel it's a real premium finish it's got a taste the difference badge on it and i'm just like oh yeah i don't want to open this because the packaging it's like it's apple packaging for crisps it's like ergonomically designed it's gorgeous i'm not saying you're incorrect but i think no crisp tops when you're in europe somewhere a warm evening t-shirt weather in an old town square glass of wine or something in front of you the little bowl of just like oily these salty crisps that they give you on a complimentary break nothing beats that crisp in my opinion it's a good shout i think the only the only one i would sort of like put up as like potentially competes with that is like your first full day on holiday so you've arrived the day before you've just got showered you've had dinner you've gone to bed you wake up in your hotel you go right let's go down to the pool we go to point you go down to beach yeah yeah we're going to the beach it's like three four o 'clock and you're like should we just go back to the room hour chill for a little bit before we like go out you get back and you've got like hotel crisps which are basically walkers or slash lays just ready salted and you have that with a fanta limon on your balcony you are fucking buzzing in that scenario back in the days where i fag i used to love that in that scenario as well just just a just a strong european cigarette that's like it doesn't doesn't come to the uk market other than in a pub car park right yeah yeah yeah absolutely boss those are the absolute days.
55:15Jack:Michael Dyer Spotless Bow says, is there a Machiavellian plot to entice some idiots to do a salute and get Sky its evidence to say we deserve relegation? It's the fans' fault. Is it not any more obvious that Vinay and Lange are working against us? Well, as previously discussed, I do think Vinay is some sort of agent of Arsenal. I mean, like Thomas Frank and the Cups, and everyone's like, oh, they were left there. No, Vinay put them there. He knew what he was doing he put the cups in the changing room um i do think there's that there is also something weird about having we've gone from ang frank to now adolf there's sort of like this weird name sort of correlation there someone's up to something on a more serious note though we did have recently a couple of fans get banned didn't we for doing salutes to german fans now now look the thing about that is where again maybe i'm just being too generous to those people i imagine that the reason that they were doing it is they were basically saying you lot are nazis right and going this is you this is your lot right which is very ignorant and clearly misguided isn't it but yeah i don't think yeah do you know i mean i don't necessarily think that they are like do it maybe i'm wrong and if they are they're bang to rights and fair enough and either way just don't do it I think the problem is, is like you don't, you don't get done on the intent, you get done on the action.
56:41Jack:And rightly so, right? They shouldn't, regardless, just to be clear, regardless, nobody should be doing it, right? But to the question, I wonder, like, this idea of like, are they going to do it? Like, yeah, some pissed up twat will do it. Because they'll also think, like we said, right? They'll just go, oh, that'll be funny because of his name, right? and they'll just be a pissed up, ignorant idiot doing it. And the media will run with it. Of course they will. And to a certain extent, rightly so. You can't be doing that in the modern world, in a football stadium or anywhere else. You're going to get banged to rights.
57:16So we'll see.
57:17Jack:Let's end on this one, John. Sorry, I've had loads of questions, actually. Thank you, everybody. I'm sorry we haven't managed to get through all of them. I think we've covered off a lot of the questions that people have asked you know kind of uh as a natural result of our of our conversation um but bat merton basically says what else are you into how are you going to escape escapism from the intended escapism if you will um i'm playing a lot of fifa with spurs and i'm just gonna like i heard you're playing i'm just gonna lower the difficulty to like amateur and just smash everyone like 50 nil uh just to make myself feel better no i i'm yeah i've never played online really like sparingly like flav flav and i did a sort of fifa series um playing together which i think is still on youtube it is quite funny it's called years versus kids and it's basically me and flav as two like old blokes basically playing online against uh teenagers and sometimes getting wound up by the kids but mainly each other that was quite fun but most of the time i play just career mode which is so these days it's quite hard to do on a lot of games just i just want to play on my own i don't want to be online and i get a lot of enjoyment out of that because i can make all the decisions and can just like build a team and a squad in in the way that i want to do it um and spurs are really good because i'm in charge and i'm making all decisions and it's really fun and i'm really enjoying it does it does actually help psychologically take me away from what happens on the pitch because my brain is going well this spurs are really good so you're fine it's usually films for me but obviously with the ween here i'm not really managing to get to watch many films at the moment which is you know difficult times i finally watched i finally watched june i've been meaning to watch it forever really liked it mate it was fantastic which won't be a shock to anyone because, you know, people love it.
59:13The first time I watched it,
59:14Jack:I got too pissed and fell asleep while I was, we went to one of those big, you know, the big Odeon, like, plush one. Yeah, exactly. With the big sort of chairs reclining. You can order food and drink to your seats and all that. Just order a few bottles of wine and just got really pissed watching Dune and literally fell asleep in it. But I watched it again on Prime and it was really good. So, yeah, I really enjoyed it. I like the idea that you're like Mr. Creosote from Monty Python, just sitting in a chair, give me another bottle of wine. Fuck off, I'm full. I'm full. And everyone's trying to watch this film and just ordering loads of shit.
59:53Jack:There's only a waffle. Waffle thing. That's me. I look a bit like him actually, to be fair. John, it's been a pleasure, mate. Always a pleasure. I mentioned it at the top, but if people are enjoying your hot takes and your big opinions, there's a whole lot more of those, isn't there, if you listen to The Big John Bass Show. It's a really original title. It took me a lot of time to think, how am I going to, you know, I really want to think about a witty pun. So I just thought, I don't know, just Big John Bass Show, that'll make total sense. But yeah, it's a Spurs pod, despite not having any Spurs player words in the title.
1:00:25But it is really just a chance for me to just, I guess, monologue really about Spurs. The idea is that it comes out on Wednesdays when you've probably listened to your favorite pods, including rule the roost of course and you want some and you want some you know just something else that's like you can just have on in the background or when you walk in or whatever that's like hopefully a bit sort of calmer because i have got through my initial anxiety and so it's less reactionary and more sort of a chance for me to review what's what's gone on and just kind of talk things through so if you you know if you enjoy listening to me then you'll enjoy listening to me again on that so feel free to subscribe jim much love always a pleasure mate thank you

Jack welcomes Big Jon Bass back to the show to discuss how we desperately need to brush ourselves off and go again after the Forest disaster.
We start by addressing the deeply uncomfortable feelings directed towards the squad this week. Seeing the players post jubilant, smiling social media updates while away on the international break has struck a massive nerve with a fanbase still reeling from a relegation scrap.
The conversation then turns to the people running the club. With the pressure mounting, we analyse the massive decision Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange have on their hands regarding Igor Tudor's future. If they pull the plug on the interim boss, who is actually brave or foolish enough to step into the dugout right now to save us from the drop?
Finally, Jon answers your listener questions. We debate what it will actually take to spark full-scale protests against the owners, ask how Vinai and Lange are still in their jobs given the current mess, and end on a necessary lighter note by getting Jon’s favourite whiskies to help soothe the pain of yet another Tottenham defeat.
